A look back at 2015, and forward to 2016

A

s we looked ahead to 2015 last year we predicted “momentous events that could change the face of the borough” as the general election loomed on the horizon.

But even we did not foresee the staggering overthrow of Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Simon Hughes in May, who had held a seat here in the north of the borough for 32 years before losing to Labour’s Neil Coyle by 4,489 votes.

With the Lib Dem grandee gone, Southwark is a sea of red, as the borough’s three MPs and council are now all Labour.

The following month, Bermondsey and the wider borough was rocked once again by the loss of Funeral Director Barry Albin-Dyer. A true community stalwart, Barry had shepherded countless local families through the most difficult times in their lives. Thousands lined the streets for his funeral in June to mourn the loss of a father figure for so many, alongside his two dedicated sons, Simon and Jon. Political upheaval is set to continue in 2016 with yet another by-election in Faraday ward due at the end of the month.

Despite a sweeping victory in the local elections in 2013, it has not been smooth sailing for Southwark Labour since then, with three councillors already having stepped down from their posts.

The borough’s regeneration schemes will continue to change the face of the borough as major projects at the Aylesbury and Elephant and Castle continue, and largescale applications start to go in for the next huge challenge, at Canada Water.

The desperate need for council housing, and affordable housing for private renters and home buyers, will undoubtedly continue to be top of the agenda for local residents, as it will be across London something local councils and the new London Mayor will have to address.

As some of the borough’s largest estates are demolished and regenerated, Southwark’s pledge to build 11,000 new council homes over the next 30 years will need to be seen and not just heard.

Leaseholders moved from their excouncil homes as part of these regeneration schemes may have to continue to move out of the borough as prices they are offered for their property are far out-scaled by the price of buying a new one. Aylesbury leaseholders are waiting to hear the outcome of their challenge to the council’s compulsory purchase orders with their homes and an awful lot of money hanging in the balance.

The stand-off between Save Southwark Woods and Southwark Council will come to a head this year as the diggers are due to start excavating graves in the next few months. Meanwhile, Camberwell residents will continue to take their fight to Transport for London to get the Bakerloo line extension running to SE5, which has been ignored by the rail and tube network for years.

Change is going to come in Southwark in 2016 but what shape that will take is still in your hands.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Historian searching for George and Albert pictured in evacuation practice on the eve of World War Two

A HISTORIAN writing a book about World War Two evacuees is searching for two men who, as small children, were the subject of a remarkable photograph taken as Britain was on the cusp of war.

The black and white snap from August 1939 shows a line of young children, with two curly-haired blonde boys at the back wearing matching outfits and bags.

Historian Gillian Mawson is trying to get in touch with the pair, who would now be aged 78, for a book she is writing about evacuees, due to be published by Pen & Sword this year. She has spoken to

hundreds of people who were moved from cities during the war, but is desperately trying to get in touch with the photo’s mystery boys for a Southwark view.

She believes the pair were born in the borough and called George and Albert Davies, earning them a memorable nickname.

She said: “Their nickname was ‘The Coronation Twins’ because they were born on the day that King George 6th was crowned.”

The pair were christened with a nod to the king’s full name: Albert Frederick Arthur George.

“I am a writer and historian with a passionate interest in the life stories of ordinary people,” she added, explaining that the photo was taken “when London school children took

part in an ‘Evacuation Practice’ just a few days before millions of children were actually evacuated.”

Many Southwark children were evacuated when the area was bombarded by the Nazi Luftwaffe during WW2.

From October 7, 1940 to June 6,

1941, well over 1500 bombs dropped on Southwark, along with another 20 parachute mines which were equally devastating.

The Blitz is still having an impact to this day. In March last year, 1200 properties were evacuated when a huge unexploded ordinance was

discovered near Grange Walk, while another WW2 bomb was discovered in Salter Road the following month.

Hospitals braced for new nationwide junior doctors strike Industrial action rescheduled over government’s pay offer

SOUTHWARK HOSPITALS are bracing themselves for widespread disruption after a nationwide junior doctor’s strike was re-scheduled for this month.

The industrial action was originally planned for early December, but was averted at the eleventh hour as the British Medical Association and the government agreed to enter into talks.

Following receipt of the government’s final offer, the BMA has taken the decision to re-schedule the strikes for this month.

On January 12 and 26, junior doctors will be providing emergency care only and on February 10 they will all out strike.

If the strike goes ahead, some scheduled operations and outpatient appointments at Guy’s, St Thomas’s and King’s will need to be postponed to ensure emergency services can

run.

“Senior managers and clinicians in the Trust are working closely with trade union representatives to ensure that the quality and safety of care that we provide to patients is not compromised when junior doctors take part in the planned BMA industrial action,” said a Guy’s and St Thomas’s spokesperson.

A spokesperson from King’s said they were also “working closely with trade union representatives at the Trust to ensure patient safety is not compromised at any time. We fully expect all urgent and emergency services provided by the hospitals we run to continue as normal on January 12.”

The 28,000 junior doctors who voted for the strike nationally are worried a new contract will see them working longer, more unsociable hours for less, and put a stop to safeguards preventing hospitals form forcing staff to work dangerously long shift patterns.

London’s Air Ambulance attended and the dinner lady at English Martyrs’ Roman Catholic Primary School in Walworth was rushed to hospital as a priority.

Mary, 56, spent five days in intensive care while her children sat by her bedside.

“It was horrible,” said Mary’s daughter Nicola Clarke. “She’s stuck in a bed and she can’t do anything.

“She’s been through a lot in the last couple of years, so it’s not nice to see her being knocked down again by this.”

“The doctors said she was very

lucky because she could’ve had a head injury. As severe as it was it could’ve been a lot worse,” added Nicola Nicola and her family are now asking anyone who saw anything that day to tell the police what they know.

“Please come forward,” said Nicola. “The scum bag who did this to her has left her with a punctured lung and multiple breaks which need surgery to fix.

If anyone knows who is responsible or witnessed it happening and can help the police in any way to catch him, please call Southwark police.”

Headteacher at English Martyrs’ Primary, Hyacinth Appah said the whole school was praying for Mary’s swift recovery. “We wish her all the best. Our prayers are for her quick and safe recovery,” she told the News.

On New Year’s Day a 21-yearold man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at a scene of an accident and suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. He has been bailed to a date in February.

Pair stole one rare vehicle worth £45,000 in their crime spree

TWO DARING thieves who used a van to steal £180,000 worth of motorbikes from across London have been put under lock and key this week.

Lufti Guney, eighteen, of the Rennie Estate, Bermondsey, and Paul O'Farrell, 23, of Brideale Close, Peckham, stalked the city’s streets in a stolen van looking for bikes and mopeds to pinch.

When they found one they liked, they used hammers, screwdrivers and crow bars to cut off steering locks, padlocks and chains. They then pushed the bikes into the van and made their getaway.

Between April and June last year the pair stole over twenty vehicles from the well-heeled streets of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster as well as closer to home in Southwark.

One rare motorbike they stole was

worth £45,000 and was one of only 300 ever made in Italy. The MV Augusta 750 was locked up with two security chains which Guney and O’Farrell cut through before police suspect they either broke it up or shipped it abroad.

Half Moon to rise again!

HERNE HILL residents rejoice! The storied Half Moon Pub, which has been closed since the devastating flood in 2013, is set to finally re-open.

The beloved boozer never recovered after a waist-high wave of water caused by a burst Thames Water pipe devastated the area in the early hours of August 7.

Since then, residents have lobbied for the pub and its musical heritage to be preserved and re-opened, culminating in a petition launched last month that was signed by 6000 people.

The venue is famed for its rich music history, having played host to industry legends ranging from U2 to The Police.

A deal has now been struck between Dulwich Estate, owners of the pub’s freeholding, and brewers Fullers, which should see the watering hole finally reopen its doors this summer.

A spokesperson for Fullers said: “We are delighted to announce that we have acquired the lease for The Half Moon, Herne Hill. In conjunction with The Dulwich Estate, we will be making a substantial investment in the pub to return it to its former glory.

“We aim to be reopening the pub, complete with a small number of hotel bedrooms, in the late summer subject to gaining relevant planning and listed building consents. Our aim is to create a wonderful pub that the local community can be proud of and that will have a place in the daily life of Herne Hill for many years to come.”

Peter Blair, of the Save The Half Moon Pub Herne Hill campaign group, promised to push Fullers to emphasise the pub’s musical heritage. He said: “We will obviously continue to seek to stress the importance both of live music and of working with the local community as Fullers develop their plans.”

School and volunteers help homeless at Christmas

A SCHOOL in Bermondsey opened its doors to give homeless people a roof over their heads this Christmas for the first time.

Volunteers working their last night shift at the Harris Academy in Southwark Park Road celebrated a job well done in the Queen Victoria on Wednesday morning after they had helped run a crisis centre there over the festive season.

Fiona Flynn, an English teacher from Peckham, has been the head chef on the night shift at the pop up homeless shelter for the last three years and said she would

not want to be anywhere else at Christmas.

“Once you get on the night shift you don’t look back. There’s a really great atmosphere in the kitchen and I like feeding people,” she said.

Former banker, James Hayes has been running the night shift at Crisis at Christmas for the last fourteen years and says this first year in Southwark was a success after they gave shelter, food and a listening ear to around 250 newly homeless people a night.

“I’ve met some fantastic people, both guests and volunteers,” said James, who is now the CEO of the Emmaus charity in Lambeth. “Guests are genuinely

grateful and appreciative just for having someone to talk to and someone to listen.

It’s so humbling how grateful people are.”

Mr Alan Dane, Principal of Harris Academy Bermondsey, said: “With a building in the heart of London, working with Crisis gave us the chance to help them do something amazing for homeless people this Christmas.

“Everyone at the Academy wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to help Crisis. Several of our staff came into school to volunteer and our girls worked hard before the holidays to collect thousands of everyday items given by Crisis to the homeless people using their service.”

Police pair praised for saving woman

BERMONDSEY: A husband and wife police duo have been commended after saving the life of a woman trying to jump off Tower Bridge.

SOUTHWARK Council Leader Peter John paid tribute to “the best borough in the best city in the world” after he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honour list.

He was recognised for his role in political services and services to local government, six years after he was elected as leader of the council.

He said: “It is hard to put into words how honoured and humbled I feel to be included in this year’s New Year Honours. I often tell people that Southwark is the best borough in the best city in the world, and I am incredibly proud to serve this great community.”

He told the News he had

actually found out about the OBE a month before it was announced, but was forced to keep schtum until New Year’s Eve, when he celebrated with a glass of bubbly.

He said: “I told a very limited number of people, maybe just half a dozen - the letter from the Cabinet Office emphasised confidentiality. There was also the worry that I would go around boasting and then might not even be on the list, which would be very embarrassing.

“I am really, really delighted, thrilled. It is often said that people like to be acknowledged and recognised and I’m no different. But this is really for the whole of the borough – if I could share it out, I would.”

Michael Pusey, the founder of Peckham BMX Club, was honoured with an MBE for

services to youth sport – although he originally thought the letter was about something very different.

“I actually thought, oh, this is from the Cabinet Office, is it the taxman?” he said.

Michael, known as CK Flash, spent seven years fundraising and getting support for the youth facility, which helps under-privileged kids in Peckham and Brixton get off the streets and put their energy towards something healthy and rewarding.

Adrian Koe, of Downside Fisher Youth Club was awarded an MBE for voluntary services to young people, while Bob Allies and Graham Morrison, founders of Southwark Street-based architecture firm Allies & Morrison, were honoured with OBEs for services to architecture.

The off-duty pair, Dominic and Louise Gallimore, were walking across the bridge while on holiday in June when they spotted the “woman in distress.”

The police officers, who are based in Staffordshire, ran to the woman as she began climbing over a fence on the side of the bridge.

The couple, who have 32 years’ experience as officers between them, managed to pull the woman back from the edge and keep her safe until the emergency services arrived.

PC Dominic Gallimore said: “It’s great to be recognised for essentially doing our job. We were on leave at the time but we’re police officers and that’s how we’re trained to react. You just try to manage situations and it doesn’t matter whether it’s Tower Bridge or Holden Bridge.”

The pair were honoured by the City of London Police, who presented them with framed commendations for their “action, off duty, saving a life on Tower Bridge.”

The brand new facility, built on part of the old leisure centre site, was originally due to open in 2013, but 500 medieval skeletons unearthed on site in October 2012 put the brakes on the £20million development.

With start of construction delayed, the opening of the facility, which will include a 25-metre pool, badminton courts, a gym, a cycle studio and a crèche, was put back to autumn 2014.

In September last year Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, told the News the opening had been delayed further but could not say why for legal reasons.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Cathedrals ward, David Noakes, is now calling for a specific opening date and an account of whether the council has incurred costs because of the delays.

“While I have no doubt the Castle Leisure Centre will be a fantastic facility, the delays in opening and the lack of updates from the council are unacceptable for residents who have been waiting patiently for an extra eighteen months for it to open,” said Cllr Noakes. Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for parks, public health and leisure, said: “Unfortunately, we have been affected by London-wide problems with the construction sector, where shortages of skilled labour and problems with the supply of materials are causing delays to some major construction projects.”

“We will however, be able to recoup the costs of late completion, and we’re confident the brand new Castle Centre will be worth waiting for, in a borough that is committed to building brand new leisure facilities and investing in our current centres despite a difficult financial climate. We’re really sorry for the delay but we look forward to welcoming residents to our brand new centre in 2016, where they will be able to enjoy our universal free swim and gym offer.”

WHILE MOST people in Southwark celebrated Christmas with their families at home, festive volunteers made sure that the borough’s elderly and vulnerable people enjoyed the big day too.

Hundreds of people enjoyed a Christmas dinner with all the

trimmings at the Southwark People Care event in Bacon’s College, Rotherhithe, and the Bermondsey Care for the Elderly event in Guy’s Tower, Borough.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, volunteered at both events on Christmas Day, helping to serve people food and spread some festive cheer.

He said: “It’s something I enjoy

doing. It’s not just for elderly people but for people with mental health problems too. It is for people who would otherwise be at home alone, or for couples who can’t cook for themselves.”

The Bermondsey Care for the Elderly event has been running for 39 years – “longer than I’ve been alive!” as Mr Coyle pointed out – and will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next

year.

Southwark People Care at Christmas, the parent group for Southwark People Care, has been running events for over four decades.

Chair Danny Walters said: “This year’s event was again a great success.

So many isolated Southwark residents were able to get out, meet others and see old friends and have a really good time.”

Campaigners: ‘Speak to us if your loved ones are buried here’

A CAMPAIGN group is asking anyone who has family members buried in Southwark cemeteries to contact them, to make sure they know their relatives’ graves could be excavated as part of plans to create more grave spaces.

Southwark Council estimates if it does nothing, there will be no burial space left in the borough by 2017, so it submitted plans last year to create thousands of new graves in naturally occurring woodland areas within Southwark’s cemeteries and to reuse

existing graves.

But campaign group Save Southwark Woods is concerned few people understand that graves older than 75 years old will be dug up to make room for more burials on top.

“The cemeteries are full and they should be closed and made into nature reserves,” said Blanche Cameron of Save Southwark Woods.

“Family histories shouldn’t be dug up like that. It’s disrespectful to the dead and it means ripping out all the history and heritage of the old graves.

Southwark Council’s plans would turn the Camberwell Cemeteries into NCP Car Parks of burial,” added

Businesses fear ‘anti-gentrification’ protest after graffiti daubed on wall BERMONDSEY

BERMONDSEY STREET businesses fear that they are being targeted by antigentrification campaigners, after protest stickers were posted on shop windows and graffiti daubed on a wall.

Vandals sprayed “CLASS WAR” and “YUPPIES OUT” onto the exterior wall of a block of luxury flats on December 30, with one business owner reporting that stickers supporting ‘F*ck Parade’ had also emerged in the days before.

The group had organised a protest

against the Cereal Killer Café in Brick Lane this autumn, which turned ugly when paint was thrown at the business and windows were broken while terrified customers cowered inside.

A Bermondsey Street business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News that it was feared protestors were set to launch a similar assault on their street.

Before the graffiti appeared, the News contacted F*ck Parade about the stickers and the concerns about a similar march in Bermondsey.

“That's the first we've heard of it.

Plus we don't do marches, we do parties,” they replied, before adding pointedly: “Bermondsey is long overdue a visit as is most of London.”

Since the graffiti emerged, an open letter purporting to be from campaign group Class War to the owners of the Bermondsey Streetbased White Cube gallery has been posted through business letterboxes.

It reads: “We think the White Cube would be an ideal replacement for a winter refuge for the homeless. The Cube is open only from 10-6 daily and not at all on Mondays. This would give ample time to open for the homeless from 8-8 daily...

“If you were to grasp this opportunity to marry art with social responsibility no doubt it would be welcomed worldwide.”

The News contacted the White Cube gallery for comment but did not receive a reply.

‘Burglary’ police find wallet at scene WALWORTH: Suspected burglars are thought to have left a wallet at the scene of a botched raid.

Police had been called on December 29 to a block of flats in Amelia Street, Walworth, after neighbours reported hearing noises in an empty property upstairs.

Officers found nobody in the residence at around 6.15pm. Two people have been arrested and released on bail until March.

Domestic violence video launched SOUTHWARK: Southwark Council has launched a campaign aimed at getting the borough’s residents talking about domestic abuse.

The #OKtotalk campaign coincides with an annual spike in domestic abuse incidents over the Christmas and New Year period.

The council has released an online video, featuring people holding up placards explaining early warning signs, to raise awareness about domestic violence.

THIS YEAR has been a battle from start to finish – with the good people of Southwark taking to the streets in protest.

Three big crusades fought all year long brought thousands of you on to your feet to take a stand over housing, green spaces and transport.

Residents on the Aylesbury and campaigners from far and wide took on the police and Southwark Council to try to save the sprawling estate from demolition. While squatters and police came to blows, leaseholders prepared their case to challenge the council’s decision to compulsory purchase their properties. With a legal decision due in the New Year, the boxers in both corners are just waiting for the bell to ring again.

The council was left stumped when thousands of people objected to their plans to clear naturally occurring woodland spaces in the borough’s cemeteries, to make room for 4,500 new graves.

The Save Southwark Woods campaign group sprang up in response to the plans at the beginning of the year and is still at loggerheads with Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment, who has always maintained that if the council takes no action, burial space in Southwark will run out in 2017.

Frustrated commuters in Camberwell took their chance this year to tell Transport for London that they need an underground line in SE5, as a Bakerloo line extension was put on the table.

As Southwark property becomes hotter and hotter with every year, the borough is struggling to hold on to its boozers. But this year publicans and patrons said they would not go down without a fight.

The historic Elephant & Castle pub was registered as an asset of community value to stop it becoming an estate agent’s office, along with the much-loved Gladstone in Borough and the Thomas A Beckett on the Old Kent Road – thanks to a groundswell of public support to save our boozers.

The fight is still on to stop the Clipper in Rotherhithe being torn down by its developer owners.

Some of you have been helping others to fight their personal battles. When we ran a story in April about a terminally ill Millwall mum who wanted to have a fairy-tale wedding while she still could, News readers raised £20,000 in a week to make her dream come true. When little six-year-old Harvey Brown (pictured below) from Bermondsey needed lifechanging treatment on the NHS, News readers signed the petition in their thousands and the year came to a close with the fantastic news that he will now be getting the drug he needs.

MARCH: Bermondsey residents were left shellshocked when an unexploded, 1000lb WWII bomb was unearthed in a building site in Grange Walk.

Homes, schools and businesses were evacuated. It was taken away to a quarry in Kent and detonated.

AUGUST: The King’s College Hospital Trust circulated a memo to its staff asking where they could make cutbacks, as it was revealed £86million of savings were needed this financial year just to balance the books.

The battle of the boozers - pu IN MANY ways, 2015 was the Year of the Pub – although not necessarily for the right reasons.

There are now 30 boozers every week calling last orders and shutting down for good across Britain, with sticky-carpeted pubs just as susceptible to falling income and predatory developers as swish, silver-countered high street bars.

In Southwark, however, countless proud punters have stood strong this year in defence of their beloved watering holes – and that’s certainly something the News is raising a glass to.

In September, we reported that the Gladstone Arms pub in Borough – a popular live music venue – was under threat of demolition, after developers proposed converting it into a block of flats.

However, thanks to a combined effort by campaign groups Save The Gladstone Arms, The Boroughood and CAMRA, the boozer is now in much safer hands after it was nominated for and received ‘Asset of Community Value’ status. This will make it far harder for any changes to take place without the support of local people.

Walworth residents have also been rallying to save the historic front of the 200-year-old Masons Arms, which may be replaced by modern hostel rooms. Residents held a protest outside the pub in September and are currently

registering their complaints with the council.

The News also covered the fight to save The Clipper pub in Rotherhithe, which is also under threat of demolition

and currently occupied by squatters.

Film actor Eddie Webber is one of over 1000 people who have joined the Save the Clipper campaign group. The actor told the News: “It is a beautiful,

traditional pub and they want to replace it with a horrible, cold building. I’m really angry about this. Time and time again we have seen this happen in Rotherhithe and we need to put a stop

OCTOBER: The family of Tommy Blackmore, a 20-year-old Bermondsey boy killed by a “boxing jab” outside a nightclub in June, called for a change to the justice system after his killer received just five-and-a-half years in jail, of which he will serve just half.

Tommy died after he was attacked in Queen Elizabeth Street on June 13 by Lloyd Smythe, who the Old Bailey heard was “p**sed off” after mistakenly believing the young Tube worker had taken his phone.

Sarah Plaschkes QC told the court: “Tommy didn’t see the defendant approach him and the Crown say in a completely unprovoked attack this defendant punched Tommy once really hard to the head.

“The blow was a boxing jab,

delivered without warning straight into the side of Tommy’s head and neck area. Tommy didn’t see it coming.”

Smythe was himself attacked as he tried to flee the scene and later handed himself in to police. The 29-year-old resident of Tabard Gardens Estate in Borough denied murder, but admitted manslaughter.

THE MOTHER of an unborn child who was killed by his own father said she “lost everything” the moment her baby Joel died.

In December, teaching assistant Kevin Wilson, 22, was found guilty of a horrific attack on his ex-girlfriend Malorie Bantala, when he and a seventeen-yearold accomplice kicked and stamped on her stomach until the baby growing inside her was dead.

She was rushed to King’s College hospital, but her unborn baby boy could not be saved and was stillborn by emergency C-section. Malorie needed life-saving surgery to control bleeding from a major artery.

In her impact statement to the court during Wilson’s trial, the brave Marks and Spencer’s worker told of how she almost died herself after the brutal ambush by two men in motorbike helmets in Talfourd Road, Peckham, on June 15.

A MAN was charged with the murder of schoolboy Mohamed Dura-Ray in November following his murder in September.

Sixteen-year-old ‘Mo’ died of multiple stab wounds in Canterbury Place on the Newington Estate.

Hundreds of his school friends marched in his memory days after the attack from where he lived on the Aylesbury to the scene of the crime.

the News in a heart-felt interview: “The sentencing guidelines in place don’t do enough for different situations. How can someone who was responsible for an unprovoked attack be treated the same as someone who just happened to deliver a fatal blow during a brawl?

“People also can get more lenient sentences for pleading guilty, even when the odds were against them and

they would have no chance of getting away. Obviously what’s happened with Tommy is done now, but this is going to keep happening to other families. Something needs to change.”

He remembered his little brother as a “cheeky chap who always had time for everyone.”

Hundreds of people paid tribute to Tommy during the year, including at a fundraising day for a charity fund set up in his name, a midnight march through Bermondsey and a mass balloon release on what would have been his 21st birthday.

Crash reports Two guilty of ‘had no basis’ teen’s murder

MEDIA REPORTS of gunmen on mopeds chasing down a father-oftwo before his car exploded in a fireball death crash on the Old Kent Road “hindered the police” in their investigation, according to a detective speaking at an inquest in October.

DI Brian Fitzpatrick, of Homicide and Major Crime Command, said there was “no sound basis” for reports of gunshots and possible foul play being involved in the death of Rotherhithe electrician Michael Paxman in the early hours of January 11 this year.

He added that the coverage had been “distressing” to Michael’s family as his death became associated with crime and gangs, which also tends to put witnesses off cooperating with the police. Assistant Coroner, Lorna Tagliavini concluded Michael, 32, had died as a result of a road traffic accident in which he was driving at “excessive speed” and was slightly over the drink drive limit. The post mortem examination reported the cause of death as multiple injuries including burns.

TWO MEN were sentenced to life in prison for the cold-blooded murder of 18-year-old Ben Purdy exactly a year before. Michael Bagnall, 22, and Andrew Bayne, 37, received a minimum of 58 years between them for their part in the love-triangle execution.

The pair had pursued the trainee plumber through Rotherhithe after he had confronted Bagnall over abusive texts he had sent Ben’s girlfriend.

When Ben (pictured) and his friends got lost and ran down a dead end, Bagnall pointed out the victim to his uncle Andrew, who shot a fatal bullet through the Walworth boy’s eye.

After receiving the sentences in court, Bagnall shouted to the judge: “Suck your mum, you p***y-hole.”

He then turned to the press bench and sneered: “Put that in your newspapers, I’m glad he’s dead, mother-f*****s.”

‘Goldilocks’ break-in

THE LAST man living in an otherwise deserted block on the Aylesbury Estate came home to find wet washing strewn all over the flat, a stranger’s toothbrush next to his and his towel, now used, drying on the radiator in October.

Mr Kerrigan called for Southwark Council to tighten security around his block after the ‘Goldilocks’ incident, when his home of 27 years was broken into, with the intruders making themselves right at home.

“It was very weird,” said Mr Kerrigan, “to see a toothbrush there next to mine. They had a bath and used my towel. I was in shock, to be honest with you.”

Man ejaculated on passenger A MAN who ejaculated onto a

woman on a train was jailed for three years and nine months in October.

Peter Fabivi boarded a train at Elephant and Castle on July 8, undid his trousers and started to masturbate in front of a 20-yearold woman.

As he ejaculated on her she pushed past him and ran to the next carriage, where she was helped by another passenger to report the offence.

Fabiyi, of Exmouth Road, Walthamstow, pleaded guilty to the sexual assault on August 19 at Blackfriars Crown Court and was sentenced to 45 months in prison.

Teen injured outside club POLICE APPEALED for

witnesses after a Bermondsey teen was left potentially scarred for life after an alleged incident outside a nightclub.

Photos of 19-year-old Jodie Hill’s horrific injuries went viral online following the incident outside The Venue nightclub in New Cross, where her family claim she was pushed into metal railings.

Jodie, who was taking care of her little sister on her first night out, needed 28 stiches to her face.

She was found unconscious outside the club by another girl, who hailed an ambulance which took her to hospital.

A 35-year-old man and a 38year-old woman were interviewed under caution at a south London police station on July 27.

Southwark’s three MPs, Helen Hayes, Harriet Harman and Neil Coyle

WHILE THE Labour party was licking its wounds after a national electoral defeat in May, the Southwark branch of the party was popping the champagne. They swept all three parliamentary seats in the borough with a combined majority of some 46,435 votes.

Surely their most satisfying Southwark victory was Neil Coyle’s toppling of 32-year Westminster veteran Simon Hughes in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

While his majority was dwarfed by those of his Labour colleagues Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes further south, the 4,489 lead was still a stunning victory – especially considering some exit polls had described the seat as ‘too close to call.’

In the end, however, Simon Hughes’ support collapsed, with Mr Coyle gaining an incredible 9,000 votes on the last Labour candidate.

It has not been smooth running at the

Labour-run Southwark council though, with three councillors stepping down this year. In March Cllr Claire Maugham announced her surprise resignation less than a year after her election, amid claims she was pushed out when her husband wrote a scathing letter to the News about council housing officers.

Council misses Aylesbury sewer date ‘Alcatraz’ JANUARY: Southwark Council were left blushing after their legal challenge of the Thames Water ‘Super Sewer’ was thrown out because they submitted their application a day late.

The council argued that the £4.2billion tunnel would have a “devastating impact” on schools and residents near one of the Bermondsey sewer sites.

The construction could see HGV travelling past Chambers Wharf every fifteen minutes, with work expected to go on 24-hours-a-day for three of the six years. But the late submission meant the council could not use a judicial review to challenge the sewer. The total bill for the failed application was £40,000.

THE AYLESBURY Estate in Walworth turned into a battle ground this year, with housing campaigners and some residents fighting to keep one of the largest estates in Europe standing in the face of Southwark Council’s decision to knock it down and replace it with new flats.

In February there was a violent scuffle as police evicted squatters from empty parts of the estate, leading Southwark Council to erect a large barbed fence around parts of the estate.

Chief whip resigned after being convicted of assaulting his wife

A SENIOR Labour councillor resigned after he was convicted in court of assaulting his wife in December. He smashed the glasses off her face and left her with a bloodied lip in the assault, which took place in November.

Walworth councillor, Dan Garfield, hung his head in the dock at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court as his tearful estranged wife, also a Southwark Labour councillor, read out her own victim statement.

As Southwark Labour’s chief whip, responsible for keeping party members in line, Mr Garfield’s departure left the group in turmoil and triggered the third by-election this year in the borough.

The court heard harrowing details of how on the night of November 8 this year Mr Garfield had attempted to slit his wrists, leading to a confrontation between him and his wife. Mr Garfield struck her twice across the face, and also stood on her feet and pulled her hair.

Magistrate Vanessa Baraitser sentenced Mr Garfield to complete a programme of 40 days with the probation service and pay £430 to the

court, including £130 to be refunded to his wife to pay for her broken glasses.

In the light of his conviction and his subsequent resignation, Mr Garfield has been suspended from the Labour Group and is now the subject of an investigation by them to see if he is fit to continue as a party member.

JANUARY: Talk about a cat call! A missing moggy was found safe and well in a Canada Water phone box five miles from its Forest Hill home.

The cat had been missing for ten weeks when he was finally found by a member of the public and taken to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Luckily, he was microchipped and the owners were contacted immediately. Grateful owner Luke Price said: “It was such a relief. We thank everyone at Battersea for looking after him.”

Battersea’s Head of Cattery Lindsey Quinlan: “Only fifteen per cent of cats that arrive here are microchipped. So when a cat like Alfie comes in it makes our job very rewarding.”

AUGUST: Bobbies on the Peckham beat encountered a slippery suspect when they found an abandoned pet snake.

The officers were approached by a member of the public who had had quite a shock when he found the one-and-a-half metre long corn snake in Goldsmith Road.

APRIL: A five-year-old train fanatic became an overnight internet sensation in April, after he proved he had memorised the entire transport map of London.

Sol De Glanville always had a fascination with rail travel, pointing out where he was on the line at every stop on a journey. Since he got a TfL map for Christmas last year, though, he studied it every day until he could tell his stunned parents how to get from any one point to another from memory.

After a video they posted online for Sol’s grandma to see his novel skill went viral on Facebook, TfL offered Sol the chance to sit in the driver’s cab on the Jubilee Line.

JUNE: An Elephant and Castle resident held a dirty protest for one outside Southwark Council HQ after a decade cleaning up faeces and urine from his stairwell.

MAY: A half-naked prankster DJ known as Disco Boy brought the party to Walworth Police Station.

The joker, dressed only in a hat, short shorts and sunglasses, pulled his speakers and disco lights on wheels into the station along with Nathan Brown from YouTube channel Trollstation.

After nearly two minutes of banging-inyour-face tunes, a group of bemused officers appeared and stopped the party.

APRIL: A Walworth war hero was honoured in April as a paving stone bearing his name was laid near his birthplace.

The plaque commemorates 100 years since Walworth-born Lance Sergeant Frank Edward Stubbs earned his Victoria Cross (VC) medal with an act of astounding courage on the beaches of Gallipoli.

On April 25, 1915, Stubbs landed just south of Cape Tekke in Turkey on a narrow stretch of beach hemmed in by steep cliffs.

Showered with Turkish gunfire from above and with three rows of barbed wire to fight through, it was against all odds that Stubbs helped to capture the Turkish positions.

The memorial stone was unveiled by the Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Sunil Chopra at the entrance to Pasley Park near Chapter Road, where Stubbs was born.

From Batman to bobby midwives

JUNE: A carer who was the victim of a vicious attack in June said he was saved by the masked vigilante known as Bromley Batman.

The mystery man, dressed all in black and wearing a bandana mask, intervened when three thugs set upon a 27-year-old man near his home in Bermondsey at around 11.30pm.

Reports of a masked man saving helpless citizens from random attacks had come to light earlier that month, with the secret saviour branded Bromley Batman. In the terrifying attack, three men blocked the stairwell as the victim tried to get up to his flat where he cares for his disabled mother.

The three men hit him in the face before a “a tall bearded man in a bandana mask all in black kicking one of the men to the ground with some sort of Jackie Chan style move,” said the victim. The identity of Bromley Batman remains a mystery to this day.

When doctors told Kelly Barrett, 35, that the only hope for her thirteen-yearold son Alfie was for him to get proton beam therapy in the States, she started fundraising to get her whole family out there before Christmas.

Thanks to thousands of pounds being donated in a matter of weeks, Kelly and her three children are now in America, where Alfie is getting the treatment he needs.

DECEMBER: A 95-year-old Peckham war veteran was awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the French government in December, 70 years after he was dodging bullets day and night to guard the aircraft he serviced.

Maurice Herron was just nineteenyears-old when he joined up. After training at North Wield, from where planes went to fly in the Battle of Britain, the young lad from Queen’s Road, volunteered to go on his first mission overseas.

He would go on to train to be a commando in the desert, service planes at El Alamein when Montgomery was there and take part in the liberation of Italy and Sicily.

MAY: Esther Hartsilver, a 32year-old physiotherapist at King’s College Hospital, was killed when she collided with a lorry as she cycled to work in Denmark Hill in May.

Hundreds of people took part in a protest ‘die-in’ in Camberwell Green junction the following month, where Esther’s sister Sally remembered her as “a free spirit.”

Terilee Sanderson AUGUST: Confusion surrounded the death of a young mother, who was found dead in her bed by her distraught mother.

Terrilee Louise Sanderson was 24 years-old when she went to bed and never woke up, leaving behind her baby son, Oliver. The toxicology report found traces of Cannabis and Ethylone in her system, but the Coroner’s report does not say how these drugs could have led to her death.

THE CLOCKS stopped in Bermondsey in June when it was announced that Barry AlbinDyer had passed away.

The funeral director, who comforted so many through their darkest hour, bravely battled cancer for well over a year before dying peacefully in his bed surrounded by his family on June 6.

In his 30 years at the head of the FA Albin & Sons table, it is impossible to count the thousands of people Barry brought comfort to as the mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers who came through his doors were all treated with the dignity and respect

as if they were his own.

Proudly carrying on the family firm, which has been burying the people of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe for over 200 years, Barry led funerals where the streets were lined with thousands of mourners such as for Damilola Taylor, Walworth-born Private Lee O’Callaghan and Bermondsey’s Jade Goody. In 2010 his dignified work repatriating British troops after they had been killed in battle in Afghanistan was recognised by the Queen, who awarded him an OBE. This was undoubtedly one of Barry’s proudest moments, but he

valued just as highly the memorial service he put on every year and the memorial garden it was held in.

A humble man, Barry never shouted about the good deeds he did, and in his quiet way he helped countless more with a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on and a word of sound advice.

Without his kind heart and sharp mind this very newspaper would not be here today.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe to remember a great man and a true pillar of this community.

Joyce Carr MBE and her sisterin-law Peggy Oliver passed away when their car collided with another in Cambridgeshire.

Both cars spun off the road and ended up in a field, where Joyce, 75, and Peggy, 83, were declared dead.

Nora Lawrence

OCTOBER: Tributes were paid to Nora Lawrence, a 97-year-old Rotherhithe woman who, rather than “wait to be bombed” during WW2, joined the Air Force to pack parachutes.

Born in Adams Gardens Estate in April 1918, Nora passed away following a short illness. After the war, she worked on the London Underground and a butchers. She found her real passion as a park keeper in Spa Gardens and Southwark Park.

OCTOBER: This year we crept tantalisingly close to hitting our fundraising target for the Evelina Children’s Hospital.

Our own managing director, Chris Mullany climbed Mount Kilimanjaro before getting on his bike to cycle 185 miles from London to Paris in a day.

The double-whammy challenge in October raised another £2,300 in sponsorship.

In the same month, the Ballers Football Academy in Rotherhithe raised over £350 with a coaches vs parents match and Veolia raised £250 for Evelina at their recycling Wonder Day in September - taking our current fundraising total to £92,730.

School and college funding

INCE THE election of the 1997 Labour government, schools in my constituency have seen dramatic improvements in the quality of teaching, their exam results and the future prospects of pupils.

One cornerstone of this was the long term commitment of successive Labour council administrations and Labour governments to providing good levels of funding for both our schools and colleges.

While we have seen great strides in the quality of our local schools, this has not been always been matched by improvements in local colleges.

Between 2010 and 2015 the Lib DemTory coalition government made very large cuts to funding for our local colleges which created significant problems and resulted in a series of mergers, the closure of some college campuses, loss of staff and challenges in attracting and retaining pupils.

High quality further education, provided by our colleges, is vital both to deliver the opportunities our young people need and deserve, and in creating a thriving high skills economy.

I am therefore pleased to see the recent judgement of OFSTED that LeSoCo has been on a path of improvement, but I want every school and college serving my constituents to be either Outstanding or Good.

On top of additional cuts to further education funding the Tory government is proposing to change the way that funding for schools is distributed across the country. Inner London boroughs like Southwark have greater challenges than affluent shire counties like Surrey and have historically been funded accordingly.

The details of the Tory plans have not yet been released, but there are serious concerns that our local schools may lose out in this change.

I will fight as hard as possible to ensure that our schools and colleges have the resources that they need to continue to deliver a great start in life for all of our young people, no matter what their background.

It was a privilege to join Christmas Day volunteers

IT WAS a privilege to join all the volunteers at Southwark People Care and Bermondsey Care for the Elderly on Christmas Day.

To see so many local people give their time to ensure others get a better Christmas is heartening.

Special thanks go to all the organisers and fundraisers for these special events – including Coral Newell - who provided dinners and fun for older people at Guy’s for an astonishing 39th year running!

It was also a pleasure to visit all the volunteers with Crisis at the City of London Academy and St Matthews to see the Robes Project homeless shelter providing food and accommodation for people who’d otherwise be sleeping rough.

Southwark is lucky to have people like Coral and all the volunteers.

Thank you everyone for being so generous with your time and kindness at what can be a very lonely period for those who might otherwise have no one to be with or nowhere to live.

And all the best for 2016 to all News readers.

Get in touch if your family is buried in the borough

VERY FEW people seem to realise what Southwark Council actually plans for the beautiful, historical Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries in Honor Oak and East Dulwich.

Cutting down over 10 acres of inner city woods is actually the tip of the iceberg.

Southwark Council wants to strip out all graves over 75 years old, remove the remains, tombstones and headstones, and sell them off for new burial plots – at both Cemeteries. The history and heritage of hundreds of thousands of Londoners from the 1850s to the Second World War are to be destroyed, replaced with new crammed-in, ugly NCP Car Park burial areas like the new Woodvale and Honor Oak Rec extensions.

Southwark Council’s disregard

for London’s history and heritage is breathtaking.

There are people of note buried here, but also hundreds of thousands who are part of the history of London, including more than 300,000 paupers buried in mass graves from the time of Dickens. If anyone has family or friends buried at the Camberwell Cemeteries, please get in touch.

Save Southwark Woods is creating a list of people with friends or family buried here, to send to the Church of England.

As the Cemeteries are consecrated ground, the Diocese of Southwark still has the final say.

These people believed RIP meant they would rest in peace for ever.

Other better, fairer and less destructive options exist for burial.

We are asking the Church of England to save the graves of the Camberwell Cemeteries.

Sixty per cent of households are car free, really?

Well most of the people down my road own a car, some two. No one has ever asked anyone down here if they own a car, so where does he get this figure from?

And car usage is down by fifteen per cent?

Well that does surprise me considering TfL are issuing up to 600 new private hire licences a week, and cutting down the road space.

Anyone who has recently tried to attempt driving round the Elephant will tell you it’s a nightmare.

Which in turn with all the stationary traffic causes more pollution.

Jamaica Road is not only for Southwark residents, it's for everyone. It is a main road to the suburbs and Kent.

And these protected cycle lanes are mainly used in the rush hours, so for 18 hours a day they are hardly used, but motorists have lost that extra lane so they are actually causing congestion!

Does he actually go out on the roads? I ask myself.

FUNNY, HEART breaking, dazzling, simply everything one could possibly hope for. Funny Girl, currently at the Menier Chocolate Factory is staggeringly good.

It seems harsh to say any more as I am not sure whether there is a single ticket left, although it has already arranged its transfer to the West End. I certainly couldn’t find one when I searched, five minutes after the curtain fell, desperate to have other people experience it.

This Jule Styne musical about the unconventional star of Broadway, Fanny Brice, is exuberant and poignant in equal measure.

The theatre is an intimate space and yet the choreography and staging combine to give a big show feel. It might be slightly disconcerting to be close enough to see the workings of the actresses’ wigs, but well mats Wed & Sat 3pm, no perf Jan 1 (audio described mat perf Jan 9), ends Jan 16, £25, ringside standing tickets £10.

Macbeth Carrie Cracknell and Lucy Guerin direct a radical reworking of

worth it to see the tears in Sheridan Smith’s eyes and be blown away by the power of her voice and gutsy emotion.

From sets to songs, this is near perfection.

Move over Barbara Streisand, there’s a new Fanny in town.

This is a fantastic local theatre which produces great shows.

PART 1 FORM OF STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS II AND III OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981 Power to make general vesting declaration 1.

The London Borough of Southwark (hereinafter called the Acquiring Authority) may acquire any of the land described in the Schedule below by making a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981. This has the effect, subject to paragraph 4 below, of vesting the land in the Acquiring Authority at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below. A declaration may not be made before the end of a period of two months from the first publication of a notice which includes this statement except with the consent in writing of every occupier of the land affected.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2.

As soon as may be after the Acquiring Authority make a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in any notice. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a further period begins to run. This period, which must be not less than 28 days, will be specified in the declaration. On the first day after the end of this period (“the vesting date”) the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraph 4, vest in the Acquiring Authority together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom the Acquiring Authority could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, ie a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The later expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that the Acquiring Authority may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 3 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than 14 days from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

Every person who, if a general vesting declaration were made in respect of all the land comprised in the order (other than land in respect of which notice to treat has been given), would be entitled to claim compensation in respect of any such land, is invited to give information to the authority making the declaration in the prescribed form with respect to his name and address and the land in question. The relevant prescribed form is set out below.

THE A200 GLA ROAD (CRUCIFIX LANE/DRUID STREET) AND GLA SIDE ROAD (BARNHAM STREET, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2016

1. Transport for London in consultation with the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting and proceeding on certain sections of Crucifix Lane, Druid Street and Barnham Street to enable civil works to be executed.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

(1) entering, exiting or proceeding on Druid Street between Whites Grounds and Barnham Street;

(2) entering, exiting or proceeding on Barnham Street between Crucifix Lane and Tooley Street, local access will be maintained;

(3) entering, exiting or proceeding on Crucifix Lane between Druid Street and Barnham Street.

The Order will be effective between 13th January 2016 and 15th January 2016 every night 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM or until the works has been completed. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibition is in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via A100 Tower Bridge Road, the A2 Great Dover Street and Borough High Street to normal route of travel.

B E R M O N D S E Y HEAVYWEIGHT David Haye has stated he will demolish Aussie Mark de Mori on Saturday week when he makes his long awaited return to the ring.

The 35-year-old ends a three year plus absence from boxing against de Mori at the 02, hoping that 2016 will

eventually lead to a shot at regaining the heavyweight crown he last held in 2011.

Haye said: “‘Haye Day’ is nearly upon us and fans will be treated to a quality undercard before I make my return to the ring and demolish Mark De Mori in the main event.”

The undercard has been rejigged

after the withdrawal of super featherweight Billy Dib, as the Southwark man explained.

“Obviously it’s disappointing that Billy Dib will not be on the bill but injuries are a part of boxing sadly.

AN EIGHT-A-SIDE junior football tournament on the Aylesbury Estate was won by a team from the Missenden block, by Vernon NeveDunn

Players from the different blocks on the Aylesbury Estate came together to compete for the football bragging rights.

In a competition organised by Creation Trust and supported by the Football Foundation the keenly fought tournament took place on the estates solitary pitch.

A spokesman said: “It was dark but the players hardly noticed. It was amazing that they could actually see the ball.

“The final was dramatic, won by the team with players from the Missenden block by nine goals to eight, defeating a strong team from the Taplow block.”

Walworth tennis ace puts on unbeaten show

WALWORTH TENNIS star Joshua Usideme picked up his first grade four tournament win last weekend by putting on an unbeaten show in seven contests.

The Michael Faraday primary school pupil won all his matches to secure the under ten boy’s title at David Lloyd Gidea Park Centre event last Sunday.

After his seven wins, with one match lasting more than two hours, he said: “I played very well. I am so excited I won my first grade four tournament."

At Burgess Park, the home of Usideme’s Southwark City Tennis Club, most of the tournaments were cancelled due to the wet weather last weekend.

But not before Jubril Andu, under eights, Lucas Ebert, under nines and Mukthar Andu, under eighteens, had

home-grown fighters to the bill in what promises to be a thrilling domestic dust-up.

FISHER PLAY their first fixture of the year away against Canterbury City this Saturday as waterlogged conditions meant their game last weekend against Rochester United was postponed.

O’Brien: Everything in place to achieve success

AIDEN O’BRIEN says he knows in his “heart” that Millwall are good enough to gain promotion from League One this season.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Barnsley left the Lions six points off the playoff spots, but they do have a game in hand on sixth-placed Peterborough United.

O’Brien got back in the scoring groove in the 4-0 win over Southend in the last game of 2015,

but Millwall endured a disappointing start to the new year when they missed a number of chances to salvage at least a draw at Oakwell.

However, the 22-year-old attacker still believes everything is in place for Millwall to mount a promotion challenge.

“I know we’re capable as a team, we’re capable of big things in this league,” O’Brien said. “I’m not saying it’s going to be easy and that we’re going to automatically get promoted, because there are a lot of good teams with us like the Coventrys, Sheffields, there’s a lot

Carlos Edwards pulled a hamstring last Saturday against Barnsley and his potential replacement, Shaun Cummings, will have his hamstring strain assessed before the game.

George Saville returned to Wolves after his loan came to an end last weekend.

Shane Ferguson is available for the last game of his scheduled loan, and Millwall are waiting for a response from Newcastle over a potential extension or a permanent deal.

“I’ve scored a lot of goals on the wing this season as well as up front so I can’t really complain. I just want to keep playing and playing and making myself a better player.”

Marquis ‘Wall future in doubt

THE FUTURE of Millwall striker John Marquis is still uncertain but could be decided this month.

Marquis joined Leyton Orient on loan in October and that deal ends after their clash with Exeter this weekend.

Marquis, 23, has made fifteen appearances for the League Two side and has scored one goal.

He has played six times for Millwall this season but found his opportunities limited due to the form of Steve Morison, Aiden O’Brien and Lee Gregory.

Jamie Philpot, 19, is also building up his fitness after injury and he is a player Harris and his backroom staff believe could make an impact this season.

That leaves Marquis in limbo, but it appears that his future with the club he made his debut for as a seventeen-year-old in 2009 is in doubt.

Harris is a big admirer of his former teammate but can’t guarantee he will remain with the Lions.

“Having spoken to (Orient manager) Ian Hendon, he’s been really pleased with John,” Harris said. “He says he’s been great and they’ve really enjoyed having him.

“So we’ll have to see where that one goes.

The reason John went in the first place was because of his desire to play, his desire to be involved every Saturday. And he wasn’t getting that here.

“He’s a young man who works extremely hard all week and has done his time and been patient and waited for an opportunity.

“He’s at an age where he wants to play regular first-team football and I can understand that.

“We’ll have a conversation with John to fight for his spot when he comes back or if he feels that he needs certainty about playing every week then we’ll look at it from there.

“John’s got great character, he’s a great fella and we look forward to catching up.”

TEVE MORISON insists Millwall are not pushing the panic button despite a run of four defeats in their last five league fixtures – and urged his side to take inspiration from the second half of the 2009-10 season.

The Lions are currently tenth in League One, six points behind Peterborough in sixth but with a game in hand.

On January 16, 2010 a 1-1 draw with Southampton, rescued thanks to Liam Trotter’s injury-time goal, left Kenny Jackett’s side four points behind sixthplaced Swindon but with two more games played.

However, a sequence of thirteen wins in their next sixteen fixtures lifted them

to second in the table and though they failed to secure automatic promotion they went on to defeat the Robins in the play-off final.

Morison feels the competition this season is not as fierce as it was then, but warned there are a number of sides capable of putting winning runs together.

Millwall’s current captain said there was no despondency after Saturday’s defeat to Barnsley as attentions turn to securing a first win of 2016 at Oldham this weekend.

“We’ll work on Oldham on Thursday and Friday and carry on as normal,” Morison stressed. “I don’t think you change anything. If you start changing things it might seem like panic stations.

“We lost a game, the world’s not going to end. If we were sitting in the bottom three or four and desperately needing a win then I think there would be cause for concern.

“But we’re in a nice position in the

league and the year we got promoted we only started around now. I remember us going on a run then and we looked unstoppable.

“And the league then was a lot better than it is now. If there hadn’t been Leeds, Norwich or Southampton in the division that year we would have gone up automatically. We went on one heck of a run and if you look at the teams in and around us they’re probably thinking the same thing – that it’s possible to go on a little run.”

Millwall are expected to be active in this month’s transfer window, with the acquisition of an attacker a priority for Neil Harris, and Morison believes that could positively impact their season.

“The gaffer has said there are going to be players going out and players coming in, so you hope you’re not one of those going out,” he joked.

“A couple of signings can freshen the place up and they can make or break your season, can’t they? We’ll see what

happens. I’m sure that the gaffer has got some things in mind so we’ll wait and see.”

Millwall had a busy first half of the season with their prolonged involvement in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and several postponements cramping their fixture schedule, but Morison is refusing to use that as an excuse for the dip in results since the beginning of December.

He explained: “At the end of the day you live right, you do everything right and live football. If you’re tired because you’re not living right then you need to look at yourself in the mirror.

“I feel alright, personally. We have got a small squad but a couple of signings, and the right kind of signings, can bring us a long way.”

“It’s a long old season, there are still twenty-odd games left. There are a lot of points to play for and a long way to go so we’ll keep cracking on.”

MILLWALL CLUB captain Tony Craig is out of his knee brace and back doing physical exercise as he embarks on the next stage of his recovery from a serious knee injury.

Craig hasn’t played since he sustained ligament and tendon damage against Bradford in October and he had surgery in midNovember.

Neil Harris confirmed this week that Craig will be assessed again at the end of January and he is still hopeful that the defender will be available in the latter part of the season.

The Millwall boss also praised Craig’s powers of recovery.

“Tony’s doing really well,” Harris said. “He’s got a big date at the end of the month.

“He’s got a trip back to see the surgeon to see how he’s healing.

And if he’s healing as we hope he is

and expect him to be then he’s doing really well and we’ll be looking for him to play before the end of the season.

“If it hasn’t taken its natural course by then, then it’s going to be difficult for him to play again this season.

“But, in terms of recovery and healing, he’s been really good, really impressive.

“He’s not doing anything outside, he’s gym-based and he’s swimming.”

THE DRAB backdrop was an appropriate one as Millwall lost their first game of 2016, and their second against Barnsley this season.

The rain came steadily down from a prematurely darkening sky over Oakwell on Saturday afternoon as Neil Harris’ side experienced an unwanted sense of déjà vu.

This was the sixth time in the last nine games that Millwall had fallen behind and they haven’t rescued a win or even a draw from any of them.

Barnsley probably just about deserved to hang on in the end after goals from Sam Winnall in the first half and Adam Hammill after the break had them 2-1 up in the closing stages.

Not for the first time this season Lions captain Steve Morison will have wondered how on earth he didn’t more significantly add to his goal tally. He saw two headers cleared off the line in the second half before hitting the crossbar in added time and watching as Alfie Mawson – a target for Millwall last summer – cleared Lee Gregory’s followup off the line.

“It’s a frustrating result,” Morison said.

“But all we can do is get ready and go again, we can’t dwell on it and we can’t change it.

“It was one of those games – you do everything right, get the ball on target but they died for the cause, didn’t they?

Clearing the ball off the line and then again after I hit the bar at the end.

“You just think it’s in as soon as it leaves your head, but we conceded two goals we could have done better with. We’ve worked very hard to try and get back on terms and we did, that but then we give another soft goal away six minutes later.

“We threw everything at them but it just wasn’t enough on the day. It’s frustrating but we can’t change it now.”

Lee Johnson’s side started much more urgently against the visitors, swarming all over Millwall in midfield and then breaking rapidly to put the back four under severe pressure.

The Lions only had themselves to blame with their carelessness in possession. At one point in the first half Ed Upson gave the ball away and when Hammill sent a cross to the back post Millwall were lucky the referee’s whistle sounded for Marley Watkins’ push on Mark Beevers a moment before winger Lloyd Isgrove nodded past David Forde.

Barnsley were already a goal up by then, Millwall failing to anticipate an exchange of passes after a short corner before Hammill’s cross was headed home by an unmarked Winnall.

Forde produced a couple of excellent saves to prevent Barnsley from doubling their lead after the break, turning Hammill’s free-kick away for a corner and then stretching out a right boot to block Winnall’s close-range shot.

It wouldn’t be the last time those two would haunt their opponents.

Millwall equalised against the run of play in the 61st minute when Morison reacted quickest in the box to prod home after Joe Martin’s shot had come back off the post.

But Barnsley scored what proved to be the winner when Winnall’s superb backheel sent Hammill racing towards Millwall’s box and he evaded a couple of

weak tackles to shoot past Forde.

The result leaves Millwall in danger of slipping away from contention for a playoff place, while automatic promotion looks like it is well out of reach with Burton and Gillingham showing few signs that they are going to suffer dips in form.

Millwall are now 16 points off second place and face Oldham next Saturday before the first leg of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area final against Oxford the following Thursday.

Failure to win that rescheduled fixture at Boundary Park will surely mean a potential JPT decider at Wembley will be a consolation prize rather than a dress rehearsal for a play-off final in May. But Morison insists heads will not drop after a fifth defeat in seven games.

“We just keep going,” he said. “We’ll keep doing what we’ve been doing. There hasn’t been much in the games, it’s just that we’ve been getting punished for little errors.

MILLWALL’S JANUARY transfer activity could be conditioned by the future of Shane Ferguson and whether he extends his loan deal or signs permanently from Newcastle United.

The winger’s current temporary deal is due to conclude after next Saturday’s League One fixture at Oldham, and Neil Harris wants to hold on to the Northern Ireland international until at least the end of the season.

Alfie could be loan shark

ALFIE PAVEY could leave Millwall on loan this week – with the National League a likely destination for the striker.

Pavey has made six substitute appearances for the Lions this season but has yet to make a competitive start for the first team since his move from Maidstone United in 2013.

He has been an important player for the U21s this campaign in their march to the quarter-finals of the U21 Premier League Cup. The striker was on loan at Barnet in 2014-15 where he made three substitute appearances.

There was some interest in Pavey before the loan transfer window shut on November 25 last year, but Neil Harris decided that, with John Marquis already at Leyton Orient, he would continue to develop the young centre-forward at the club.

Harris has taken a number of calls recently from National League sides expressing an interest in Pavey, and, with the Lions boss targeting the signing of an attacker this month, the 20-year-old will be on the move.

Pavey would welcome the experience and said recently: “I had a loan move last season to Barnet. It was too good of a chance to turn down at the time. They were top of the league and doing well and when I went there it was more for the experience of being around the dressing, what it’s like trying to win three points.

“Those players are playing for their families, those three points really mean something to them.

“Experience-wise I learned a lot from it. I didn’t really get a lot of game time and I came back and carried on playing with the U21s.

“It’s all about waiting. It’s up to the manager to see what he wants to do.

“As much as I want to be out on that pitch, it depends on how the game is going. At the moment I’m not stressing, I’m relaxed and enjoying myself.”
