Housing situation not ideal, but it is honest

S

OUTHWARK COUNCIL is certainly one of the biggest landlords in the country and so the issues faced by its housing department affect more of the 300,000 residents living in this borough than it would elsewhere.

That is why the man in charge of managing this vast stock of homes, Cllr Richard Livingstone, must be as frank and open as possible about the challenges he faces.

In an exclusive interview with the News this week the cabinet member for housing has been emphatic in dispelling fears that the council would embark on more wholesale demolition of estates. With the two largest estates in the borough, the Aylesbury and Heygate, being demolished and redeveloped, the housing boss has clearly stated that the bulldozers stop here.

Many of the borough’s other large estates are actually undergoing major works to bring them up to scratch.

The cost of managing such a large amount of homes is enormous, especially if you are committed to bringing estates like the Four Squares and Abbeyfield in Bermondsey, as well as Caroline Gardens in Peckham, up to standard.

With land values higher than ever before, the easiest option would be to sell off some of the most valuable land, to pay for those that are costing the council money to keep and improve.

But to do this at a time of the massive shortages in housing in Southwark and the capital as a whole would be disastrous. Cllr Livingstone could not be more frank in his response to this fear, saying there was not an even list of properties earmarked for demolition.

This is despite a report being commissioned by the council to get Savills to look at how much every home is worth. Although it categorised 4,000 homes as having a value of below zero, Cllr Livingstone says overall the council owns enough profitable stock to pay for investment to bring the rest “up to scratch.”

The cost of the report at £98,000 was not cheap, but for the council properly to manage the books on such a large portfolio of homes you have to be armed with all the information. If it results in no more demolitions then it will be money well spent.

The opposition parties are right to question spending on consultants and argued that the money spent on Savills report could have paid for new kitchens and bathrooms, a key manifesto pledge of this Labour administration.

But with budgets running into tens of millions of pounds, the administration will argue that £98,000 might just be proportionate to what is needed to get everything straight. Indeed it was also refreshing to hear the cabinet member admit that the figures to fulfil the kitchen and bathroom pledge had gone askew with the Chancellor’s curb on council housing.

Cllr Livingstone said that the department was not able to foresee George Osborne’s announcement in July that council rents would go down by one percent every year for four years. It has blown a hole in the council’s spending plans, which had been based on an annual one percent rise on top of inflation. In order to recover the £62million, Cllr Livingstone admitted that the council would have to slow down the roll-out of its kitchens and bathrooms pledge to be completed by 2023, rather than 2021.

Not ideal, but even with a two year delay, it would be some achievement to fulfil this pledge, given government cutbacks.

A PECKHAM ‘clippie’ was honoured this week as the first ever female member of staff to get on the buses in London one hundred years ago.

Mrs G Duncan became the first woman bus conductor when she started working the 37 bus route from Peckham to Putney back in November 1915.

As Britain dispatched thousands of bus and tram workers to fight at The Front in the First World War, women stepped in to keep the wheels in motion back home.

In a drive for change, 4.600 women started working for the London Omnibus Company during the Great War, but they

were not a regular sight until World War Two and it wasn’t until 1974 that London employed its first female bus driver.

To mark the moment Mrs Duncan got on board, women bus conductors rode a vintage Routemaster bus around the 37 bus route on Monday morning.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at Transport for London, said: “As the first female bus conductor, Mrs Duncan played a key role in our history and was one of hundreds of women who played such vital roles in serving London throughout the Great War. “Today, women have a central role within our organisation and industry, helping to keep London working and growing both now and in the future.”

Woman ‘punched and thrown off bus in racist attack’

THE POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman wearing a pink headscarf was punched in the head and kicked off a bus backwards in Elephant and Castle in what officers described as a “racist and Islamophobic” attack.

Two women are now sought by the police after the shocking assault on the number 63 bus on Wednesday night last week as it pulled up to the underground station stop in London Road just after 8pm.

Shocked commuters who witnessed the victim, in her forties, fall off the back of the bus, tried to hold the assailants at the scene until the police arrived but they both escaped.

The suspects were heard shouting racist and Islamophobic abuse at the victim before and after the attack, like “This isn’t bloody Africa.”

Bus passenger Antonia Bance, who called an ambulance for the victim, said her fellow “weary commuters” turned into a “crack team” after the attack as they took photos of the suspects, called the police and comforted the victim.

The victim sustained injuries as a result of the attack and was also badly shaken.

She was taken to a central London hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

In the last twelve months there were nearly 500 reported hate crimes in the borough for race or religious reasons, compared to 341 the year before that.

Similar numbers of hate crimes were reported in Lewisham over the same period and around 150 more were reported in Lambeth.

Both suspects in this assault are described as black females aged in their twenties and police are appealing for any witnesses to now come forward.

SOUTHWARK NEEDS more women bobbies on the beat to stop and search the girls who are carrying knives for their boyfriends, according to a former gang member and the family of a murdered teen.

The police acknowledge girls are carrying blades because they know they are less likely to be challenged by male officers who can only do a “superficial examination of outer garments” of female suspects.

More than two thirds of police officers are men in Southwark, so if an officer suspects a girl of carrying a knife and wants to search more than her shoes and pockets, he would need to take her back to the police station

and wait for a WPC (woman police constable) to become available.

Former gang member, Jennifer Blake, who now runs Peckham-based youth charity Safe n’ Sound, said she had been telling the police for years that girls carrying weapons was a serious problem. “They’re not enough WPCs out there to conduct stop and searches, it’s rare to see female PCs out there,” said Jennifer, who said a bigger problem was still the way stop and searches were carried out – sometimes without following correct police procedure.

“They need to be recruiting more female officers and maybe stop and search would be conducted in a more subtle way then anyway,” she added.

Historic Coronet theatre to close in a year

THE HISTORIC Coronet theatre has announced it will close its doors in little over a year after an application to get it grade II listed was refused.

There has been a theatre on the site in Elephant and Castle since 1872, but developers, Delancey, bought the site along with the Shopping Centre in December 2013 and have expressed a preference for ‘redevelopment’, which would mean knocking it down after the Coronet’s lease was due to expire in January.

The Theatres Trust applied for the building, where Charlie Chaplin is said to have performed, to become grade II-listed last year to protect it from demolition.

In June the News reported that Southwark Council and Mayor of

London Boris Johnson wrote to English Heritage to oppose the listing with the latter saying it would be “a significant obstruction to the redevelopment of this key site, and compromise the wider regeneration of Elephant and Castle town centre.”

The news that Historic England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport have decided not to list the building because many of its original Art Deco features have been lost, has come to a blow to campaigners hoping to save it from demolition.

Director of the Coronet, Richard Littman, said “positive negotiations” with their landlord had won them a year’s extension on the lease so he is now focusing on cramming as much in

“We’ve been here for so long, and we will be really sad to go, but with the Elephant and Castle changing so much, so quickly, it’s become clear that the evolving character of the area is no longer right for a venue like ours,” he said.

“Rather than fighting against change, we want to focus on celebrating The Coronet’s incredible history.

believe it is the case. “It's worrying because statics tell us that if you carry a knife, you are far more likely to be the victim of a knife attack.

“In response to this I have asked a very experienced local Police Sergeant if she can identify and link to local women's groups and jointly come up with a plan to identify, protect and advise these girls whenever possible."

London Assembly member, Caroline Pidgeon, who lives in Dulwich, said it was “shocking” if girls feel they can get away with carrying knives because they are less likely to be stopped and searched.

“The MPS need the resources to be able to protect and police communities effectively and to tackle knife crime, one of these key resources is female officers,” she said.

CCTV appeal after bus ticket inspector ‘threatened’

POLICE ARE appealing for information after a ticket inspector was allegedly threatened on a Dulwich bus this summer.

The incident occurred on July 16 on the number 12 bus in Etherow Street.

The 44-year-old male victim was allegedly threatened by the suspect at about 9.40am.

The suspect is described as a black man, aged in his late teens, wearing a hooded Adidas zip-up top. They have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

No tickets left for tonight’s fireworks extravaganza

PEOPLE WISHING to attend today’s Fireworks Night celebration have been advised that the event has sold out and no tickets will be available on the door.

Over 33,000 people attended last year’s event, which saw “scary” overcrowding, leading Southwark Council to designate tonight’s event ticket-only.

Gates open this evening at 5pm, with last entry at 6.30pm. Attendees have been advised to “arrive early to avoid the long queues.”

In 2014 there were dangerous levels of crowding at the £58,000 pyrotechnics show, with one attendee expressing surprise that no one had been hurt.

Timi Samples, 48, feared her wheelchair-bound daughter would be trampled by the impatient crowds as they waited to get in to last year’s event.

She said: “I’m surprised no one was killed or squashed to death. It was really scary. There were people jumping off the concrete slabs on to us and our children. People just got fed up queuing.”

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark Cabinet member for business, employment and culture, said: “Apologies to those who weren’t able to get tickets in time, unfortunately they will not be available on the gate but I hope you will appreciate these capacity restrictions have been put in place on the recommendation of our partners in our safety advisory group to ensure a safe event for everyone. We look forward to seeing those who did get tickets at the park tonight.”

The official borough service is traditionally attended by the First Citizen of the borough, past Mayors, Free Citizens, Honorary Aldermen, Southwark’s three MPs, the Leader of the Council and opposition parties, Southwark’s London Assembly Member, representatives from The Royal British Legion, members of HM Armed Forces, members of the Emergency Services and the Representative Deputy Lieutenant.

An Armistice Service will be held at West Lane War Memorial, SE16 (off Jamaica Road), on Wednesday 11 November 2015. This service will be led by The Arch Bishop of Southwark, the most Rev Peter Smith and local church ministers. Please gather at 10.45am.

Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

On this day, people across the nation pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women.

The act of observing a two minute silence began in 1919, following the Armistice at 11am on 11 November 1918 at the end of the First World War. In 1921, the year the Royal British Legion was formed,‘Armistice Day’ was formally adopted as the national day of remembrance.The two minute silence is held at 11am on 11 November, when the nation pauses to honour those who gave their lives in conflicts past and present.

SOUTHWARK’S HOUSING boss has declared there will be no more wholesale demolition of estates in the borough after the Aylesbury and the Heygate.

This reassurance came in the same week the News uncovered that the report, which branded 4,000 homes in the borough as being worth less than nothing, cost the council £98,000.

Property Management firm Savills were paid £42,000 to survey over 50,000 properties in the borough and value them both financially and socially.

Those deemed to have a negative value because more money would need to be spent on them than the council would make back in rent and charges over a period of 30 years, were left vulnerable to “disposal” in order to “remove onerous liabilities from Southwark’s balance sheet.”

Speaking to the News this week,

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, reassured concerned residents that the “vast majority” of homes listed as needing a lot of investment will not be knocked down.

“What I want to make clear is that this is very much about improving homes,” he said. “Very large scale redevelopment of estates is not on the table.”

The purpose of the detailed stock survey was instead to tell the council which buildings need different kinds of investment to bring them up to a decent standard and whether the council can afford it or not, according to Cllr Livingstone.

Although 4,000 homes were categorised as having a value of below zero, Cllr Livingstone says overall the council owns enough profitable stock to pay for investment to bring the rest “up to scratch.”

Jobs, repairs and kitchen pledge to be hit

A GOVERNMENT curb on council rents will leave a gaping £62million hole in the borough’s housing budget meaning Southwark’s kitchens and bathrooms pledge will have to go on the back burner and some housing officers will be for the chop.

Chancellor George Osborne’s announcement in July that council rents would go down by one percent every year for four years blew a hole in the council’s spending plans, which had been based on an annual one percent rise on top of inflation.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said the borough could have taken the hit for one year but four years will be “painful.”

In order to recover the £62million, Cllr Livingstone said the council has had to slow down the roll out of its kitchens and bathrooms pledge – to replace kitchens older than twentyyears-old and bathrooms older than 30-years-old– to be completed by 2023, rather than 2021.

Asked if this would go down as a ‘broken promise’, Cllr Livingstone said: “We made a promise about the timescale on the basis of what we knew then about rent. We had no idea the Chancellor of the Exchequer was going to come out of the blue with a rent decrease. We had to tweak things to address that.

We are still delivering kitchens and bathrooms but it’ll just take a bit longer.”

The whole housing department is going to have to go through a “restructure” with an unknown number of housing officers “likely”

to lose their jobs.

The way repairs are responded to is also going to be overhauled with fewer jobs being allocated as emergencies. Cllr Livingstone said some repairs were being incorrectly categorised as ‘urgent’, incurring a hefty callout fee for the council and unnecessary disruptions for the resident.

To residents concerned their repairs will now take longer, Cllr Livingstone said “realistic timescales” will help the council guarantee work will be completed by a set date and hold contractors to account.

The council also launched a DIY programme this year with the aim of helping able-bodied residents to do things like change their own lightbulbs and unblock their toilets instead of calling it in to the council as a repair.

Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, Anood Al-Samerai, said the money spent on the Savills report would have been better invested in much-needed kitchens and bathrooms.

“There are real concerns that the Labour party is spending money on consultants instead of kitchens and that this expensive report is going to be used to justify demolishing local estates because the land they sit on is valuable.”

The Savills ‘Asset Performance Evaluation’ was used as the basis for the council’s draft Housing Asset Management Strategy. The strategy states that one of the aims of the council’s asset management is to “identify stock that is or may become a liability. Such properties may be a drain on resources and best suited for disposal or redevelopment. It is important that we do not bring properties up to decent homes standard if there is a question about their short to medium term future.”

Cllr Livingstone said the wording here did not reflect the council’s position as social landlord with the interests of its residents at heart.

“Perhaps it could have been better phrased because it mentions demolition but we don’t see that as

where we are going with our housing,” reiterated Cllr Livingstone.

The Livesey ward councillor admitted that properties will be considered on a “case by case basis” and that “In a small number of cases it may mean demolition but in the vast majority of cases it certainly won’t.”

Asked if there was a list of properties earmarked for demolition, Cllr Livingstone gave an emphatic, “no”, adding that the council is now taking a “different approach” to its housing stock.

As leaseholders on the Aylesbury continue to fight the council’s wholesale redevelopment of their homes, Cllr Livingstone stands by the council’s decision to demolish and rebuild as “the only option” for the Southwark’s largest estate but says there are “easier solutions” to the borough’s remaining stock.

As evidence of their new approach, Cllr Livingstone sites estates like the Four Squares, Abbeyfield and Caroline Gardens where major works area already underway to bring them up to standard.

Search on to find family of boy scout hero Memorial service planned for WWII teenager who died saving friend

A BERMONDSEY scout group is searching for the family members of a brave seventeen-year-old who was killed rescuing a friend after a bomb hit Trinity Dockhead Church in 1940, as they prepare for a memorial service in his honour.

During the Second World War, over 50,000 Scouts trained to undertake

National War Service jobs, including acting as police messengers, firemen and stretcher bearers, like young Frank James Leopold Davis of Parkers Row. Frank initially survived the blast on December 8, but one of his friends, a fellow messenger, was trapped under the rubble. Fearless Frank rushed back in and managed to save his comrade, but was himself killed in a further explosion.

His bravery was celebrated the

following year when he was awarded the Bronze Cross, the Scout’s version of a VC medal, by president of the County of London Boy Scouts, Sir John Shea.

Following a News history page earlier this year mentioning Frank’s heroism, current Bermondsey scout leader, Bryan Jones, set about organising a memorial service to the brave boy at Nunhead cemetery where he was buried.

A ceremony has been provisionally planned for December 13, the date

Frank was buried 75 years ago. In the meantime, Bryan and the 16th Bermondsey Scout Group, based in Galleywall Road, are keen to track down any members of Frank’s family to invite them to the service.

Bryan has set up a website to gather information about Frank and thanks to contributions from local historians like Stephen Humphries, they now have leads on two of Frank’s sisters-Joyce Gilham, who lived at Abbey Gardens in

Bermondsey and Ivy West, who lived in Bonsfield Road, Lewisham.

Tributes paid to ‘warm and wonderful’ Clare BOROUGH

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to the “thoughtful, warm and wonderful” treasurer of the Nelson Square Gardens Community Association, who passed away last week.

Clare Whittlesea, who spent the last twenty years working for the benefit of her SE1 estate, died of cancer on

October 30.

Her friend and fellow Rowland Hill House resident Liz Justice described her as “a caring person with who never gave up.” She said: “She was the type of person who you could have a good argument with but she wouldn’t take offence. She had an unhappy family life but we were her family - she loved Nelson Square.

“She cared about people and getting things done properly - but always did

that with the paperwork neatly filed, the receipts in order and a quiet determination which was unbeatable.”

Clare, who originally came from East Anglia, was honoured as a Freeman of the Borough of Southwark at the Civic Awards earlier this year, in recognition of her hard work.

The Neighbourhoods Fund 2016-17 is now open

Following a very successful launch of the new fund last year, with nearly 400 applications from groups and organisations with projects across all the Southwark area, the council is hoping to attract even more applications this year.

Residents with an idea for a new project which will make a difference their local community are encouraged to submit an application.

It is advised that applicants review the guidelines and information page carefully before filling out the form and also applying well before the closing date, 12 Noon on 6 January 2016.

The funding is ward based so make sure you know in which ward your event/project will take place.

All these projects have contributed to making Southwark a place to be proud of. People are able to share skills and learn from each other. People from different generations, ethnic backgrounds and experiences have come alongeveryone is welcome. Two of the members have been able to move into paid employment since the group started up. One regular has realised just how good her work is and is going to try selling it at some of the local Christmas markets for the first time this year. We're really grateful for the funding as it has enabled us to try and build something ourselves to benefit our local community and help us feel more part of it.'

“She helped everybody, even when she was in bed dying with cancer she was worrying about other people: texting us to remind us that the clocks were going back or asking about other

residents. She was a fantastic woman and I will never forget her. She will forever be in my thoughts.”

Liz and Cllr Linforth-Hall are planning to build a memorial garden at Nelson Square in Clare’s memory, a nod to her love of gardening and nature.

Liz said: “It would be a way for her memory to live on, it would be a permanent reminder of her life.”

THE CHAIRMAN of the Albert McKenzie Memorial Fund has expressed his disgust after the memorial statue to the Bermondsey war hero was defaced two days after its unveiling.

Paul Keefe, who spent years raising funds for the tribute in Tower Bridge Road, slammed the people responsible for the “terrible” damage.

There are now several tyre marks alongside the base of the statue, suggesting people have been using the statue for bike tricks. Paul said: “It’s terrible isn’t it. It’s a beautiful statue and someone defaced it. Someone said it was done two days after we unveiled it.

“The thing about it is that it can be rubbed off - but I would be really upset it the concrete was scoured.”

He said that despite the damage, the vast majority of people were appreciating the statue as it was intended.

He said: “I’ve seen lots of people standing there looking at it. The other day I saw a man and his son standing by it. The son climbed up and got a closer look, which is what we wanted. We want people to admire it and remember him. It’s an incredible piece of craftsmanship and the reaction has been really positive. I haven’t heard one negative thing about the design.”

The statue was unveiled in front of a crowd of hundreds on October 23. The memorial paid tribute to Albert McKenzie, who became a Bermondsey legend when he received the Victoria Cross for showing extreme bravery during a WW1 raid. He died of influenza just weeks before peace was declared.

The grand Camberwell Central Library on Peckham Road was opened in 1893 by the Prince of Wales, who later became Edward VII, but was razed to the ground by a doodlebug in 1944.

For decades SE5 bookworms have been served by a temporary facility in a shopfront on Camberwell Church Street but yesterday children from Comber Grove Primary School piled in to the new library on Camberwell Green for the first time.

Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle, cut the ceremonial ribbon revealing a children’s library, computer facilities and a stock of new books and e-books.

Southwark Council faced a wave of public opposition in 2013 when they cleared a community orchard on the site in order to begin construction. Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark’s cabinet member for business, employment and culture said: “It is fantastic to see this brand new library open to the public and to show that despite local authority cuts, to Southwark, libraries remain a valuable part of our communities and we are proud to be able to continue investing in them.”

A BOROUGH mum will take part in a gruelling trek through the Sahara Desert this month as part of a fundraising challenge for a charity in her little boy’s memory.

Lucy Blanchard, whose seven-yearold “miracle” son Harley Jae passed away in February 2013 following a life-long battle with a rare genetic disorder, will be joined in the charity trek by three other Southwark residents.

Lucy, Karina Bidault, Katie Fletcher and Geoff Ho will spend four days trekking through the world’s biggest desert, scaling huge sand dunes and sleeping under the stars in aid of the Harley Jae Trust, which raises money for children with life-limiting diseases.

Lucy, originally from Nottingham,

told the News: “The charity was initially set up as a trust when Harley was still with us, as a way to raise money for equipment and care.

“Now we are officially registered as a charity and are raising money for children with life-limiting diseases.

Eventually we would like to set up a respite centre for children and their families in Harley’s name.”

Harley suffered from pontocerebellar hypoplasia type six, an incredibly rare disorder that is believed to only effect one other living child. He was induced into comas on several occasions during his life, and also suffered from pneumonia and stomach problems.

The disorder affects the brain, leading to slow development, movement problems, and intellectual impairment.

Despite these challenges, Lucy said, brave Harley constantly surprised and inspired people.

Lucy said: “The outlook was very negative, it was a miracle that he lived so long really. He was always surprising doctors, he probably should only have lived for a year or two.

“He was a very special boy. He was aware of who was about him and he was very loving. He touched hearts all over the world – for someone who never took a step or said a word he made a huge impact.”

Lucy and her friends will take part in the challenge from November 19 to November 24. Over £3000 has already been raised, with the group setting themselves a target of £8000.

Tenants told to wait for Guinness

RESIDENTS OF a housing block in Snowsfields have accused the Guinness Partnership housing association of “bullying” them by refusing to recognise the recentlyorganised tenants’ and residents’ association.

The group was set up several weeks ago by Guinness Court residents concerned about the running of their building, but they have been left in limbo ever since, they say.

Bernie O’Rourke, chair of the unofficial group, told the News: “At the moment, they’re saying we cannot have a TRA. I’m not sure where to go or how to do it. We don’t know what’s going on and there are a lot of concerned people.

“We absolutely need it. We have had drug dealers using the block, a fire recently and surveyors wandering around without anyone letting us know about it.

“We’re in the dark and they seem to want to leave us there. This is bullying but we will keep fighting.”

They said: “We work closely with a number of tenant groups across the country, and some choose to become officially registered so they can receive additional support from us.

“We are sorry that, as a result of reviewing our procedures, there has been a delay with us being able to register the TRA at Guinness Court.

We would like to reassure the association that we are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”

An 83-year-old cleaner who has worked at a Bermondsey charity for half a century celebrated her retirement with a special party last week.

Hard-working June Morgan finally hung up her mop on October 28, 50 years since first joining Bede House as a cleaner in 1932.

She has been a constant presence at the charity, which helps local people and organisations, ever since, and was praised as a “tremendous colleague” by Bede director Nick Dunne after the bash.

He told the News: “The party was a brilliant occasion and she was very happy. The smile didn’t leave her face all the way through. There was a lot of love and affection.

“I joined Bede in 2002 and she’s been

a tremendous colleague to have worked with. She is an example to all of us on how to grow old gracefully.”

The party in the Bede Centre, Beaconsfield Road, was attended by 100 people, including three generations of her family, past and present Bede staff and trustees, Southwark Mayor Dora Dixon-Fyle and Jenny Bianco, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Southwark.

June was presented with a Southwark

plaque in recognition of her work with Bede and across the borough.

Before joining the charity, June worked at the Peek Freans Biscuit Factory in Drummond Road.

June said: “It’s been lovely working at Bede and I will keep in touch.

“Today has been really special, really great.”

SOUTHWARK WILL honour the memories of its fallen men and women this weekend at a number of Remembrance Sunday events across the borough.

The official service will take place in Borough High Street at the St Saviour’s War Memorial at 10.30am.

Two minutes of silence, which is due to take place across the country, will be recognised at 11am.

The ceremony will be led by The Rev Canon Gilly Myers, of Southwark Cathedral, and will be attended by Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle, and Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Jenny Bianco, who will represent The Queen.

The borough’s MPs will also lay wreaths on the day, as will Southwark Council Leader Peter John and Southwark Lib Dems leader Councillor Anood Al-Samerai.

Anyone else wishing to lay their own wreath must call 020 7525 7303 or email mayors.office@southwark.gov.uk in advance. The service will be followed by light refreshments at the Slug and Lettuce, which is located by the war memorial.

Other services will also take place across the borough, including one at the recently renovated war memorial in Old Jamaica Road. Wreaths will be laid at 10am at the plaque, which bears the names of 970 Bermondsey men who died fighting for their country during WW1.

Remembrance ceremonies will also take place at the war memorials in West Lane, College Road, Camberwell Green, Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park and Kennington Lane at from 10am onwards.

ROTHERHITHE WORKERS have slammed the worsening traffic problems in the peninsula – and fear that the proposed cycle superhighway will make the situation even worse.

While details will not be confirmed until after a consultation period next spring, it is expected that the route will include Jamaica Road, Lower Road and the roundabout by the Rotherhithe tunnel – a notorious traffic blackspot.

Dave, pictured with a 2013 copy of the News detailing his protest, said: “Two years ago I was complaining and now we’re still in the same position.

The cycle superhighway would cause chaos – it’s already terrible out there and it’s only going to get worse.

“If you drive through central London you can already see the negative effect the super highway has had on London.

Time and time I have oversees visitors in my cab who comment on how bad the traffic is compared to five years back.

“As cab drivers we face a lot of high running costs and stiff competition from big tech companies – the cycle superhighway just puts another nail in

the coffin.”

Simon Dyer, (inset) of FA Albin and Sons funeral directors, which is located overlooking the roundabout in Culling Road, echoed these worries.

He said: “It starts getting bad at 3pm, when the traffic backs up Jamaica Road as far as Abbey Street and up Lower Road as far as the swimming baths.

“For us as a business it’s bad. Getting out is slow and coming back takes ages. We’re a local business and we’ve been here a long time and the traffic is just getting worse and worse. I’ve been here most of my life and I’ve never seen it this bad.”

He urged TfL to “look for ways to reduce the impact” of the cycle superhighway.

‘Save historic Walworth Road’

A spokesperson for TfL said they were “still working with the relevant boroughs to develop proposals” on the route, and would hold a consultation next spring.

Councillor Darren Merrill, Southwark Cabinet member for environment and public realm, said the cycle superhighway “presents an opportunity to address a number of concerns as well as to provide a safer environment for cyclists.”

He added: “Crossing facilities for pedestrians will be significantly improved along the route and bus priority will be maintained. Changes at the Rotherhithe roundabout are also covered by CS4 and this is key to reducing congestion on Jamaica Road and adjacent local streets.”

WALWORTH

NEW PICTURE postcards of Walworth Road show the higgledy-piggledy mile-long stretch of historical buildings, which a community group hopes will earn it a listing as a Conservation Area.

An application has been submitted to Southwark Council to list the road as an “area of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which is desirable to

preserve or enhance.”

The Walworth Society has spent two years gathering sources to prove that the bustling high-street is worth preserving as it has notable surviving examples of early 19th to mid-20th century buildings.

“We’ve been amazed at what rich history there is along the Walworth Road. It shows the development of our high streets,” said Jeremy Leach, chair of the Walworth Society. “The whole story of retail life is told in the Walworth Road.”

If granted, the Conservation Area would mean new developments

would have to conform to certain design criteria and the Walworth Society could apply for funding from the Heritage Lottery to support local shopkeepers to restore their premises.

Peckham Coal Line still on track after smashing fundraising target PECKHAM

Crowdfunding campaign raises £76,000 to turn old rail line into high rise park

A GRASSROOTS campaign to get an urban park running along a disused railway line in Peckham has smashed its fundraising target with a record number of pledges.

The crowdfunding website SpaceHive received 937 individual pledges towards the Peckham Coal Line’s £65,000 target – three hundred more than their highest previous amount.

By the Saturday night deadline, local architect Nick Woodford was relieved to see they had not only met their target, but exceeded it by a whopping £12,000 with a total of £76,000.

“It’s really great,” said Nick, who admitted he was “a bit worried” back in August, when he calculated the project would need more than £1,000 a day to make their target amount.

At the eleventh hour Southwark

Council pledged £10,000 to London’s answer to New York’s High Line, which would run along a 900-metrelong stretch of elevated track from Ricketts sidings by Peckham Rye station to Kirkwood Nature Reserve, coming out behind Queen’s Road station. “In the last few weeks it seemed to pick up. Every time we got a big backer that was great, but by far the biggest number of pledges came from the general public,” said Nick, who got the wheels in motion earlier this year with fellow Peckham architect Clyde Watson.

The nine core members of the Coal Line team are now working with Southwark Council, National Rail, the Greater London Authority and Transport for London to prepare a brief for the feasibility study to look into how the Coal Line could work in practice.

This will go out to tender and a company will be appointed by the new year.

A PLANNING application for a new square outside Peckham Rye station - complete with tropical roof garden - has finally been submitted.

The proposal was initially revealed at a community meeting in August, to mixed reviews.

The design, by Landholt and Brown Architects, will open up the front of the historic station by demolishing the arcade, which currently houses TSB bank, Jenny’s café and several small businesses.

The bordering railway arches would be refurbished to create commercial units facing into the new square and two new storeys would be added on top of the building on the corner of Blenheim Grove and Rye Lane for a tropical roof garden.

At the initial unveiling of the plans in August, there was a consensus of support for an open square, harking

back to the station’s original 1800s surroundings, but concerns around the detail of the design.

Barry Jenkins, of Barry’s Café next to the station, worried about the maintenance of the large planters, while Derek Kinrade, of the Peckham Society, said he was “distinctly worried” the new open space was

being filled up with “clutter”.

Mickey Smith, who resurrected the now thriving Bussey Building, said it was a “good plan” but hoped there would be scope for more than the one bar currently proposed in the design to create a safe and lively atmosphere at night.

regeneration and new homes, Mark Williams, said: “This is an exciting step forward for the future of Peckham and opening up the square in front of the station. Local residents have had a direct influence on how the new square will look through the co-design process, and these plans will help create a welcoming gateway to Peckham for many years to come.”

The planning application, reference 15/AP/4337 is now open to public consultation until December 3, with work planned to start in the summer next year if permission is granted. It is estimated that the scheme will take eighteen months to complete.

Pensioner stable

PECKHAM: A pensioner is in a stable condition after a collision with a car on Friday, October 30.

The woman, said to be in her 80s, suffered serious injuries after the collision in Rye Lane shortly before 3.30pm, which reportedly also involved a number 63 bus.

The victim’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. The driver stopped at the scene and was not arrested.

Officers injured

SOUTHWARK: A number of Southwark police officers were hurt when they were allegedly attacked with “scaffolding poles and bricks” at an illegal rave in Lambeth on Halloween night.

The officers are recovering from minor injuries sustained in Vauxhall on November 1, when police attempted to shut down the unlicensed event.

The injured officers were praised by Chief Superintendent Pippa Mills for their “restraint and professionalism” in “challenging circumstances.” In total, fourteen officers received minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Sixteen people have now been arrested, with one person charged with assaulting an officer. Another has been charged for possession of an offensive weapon while the remainder have been bailed.

Police hunt after girl, 11, sexually assaulted on bus

Rape charges

EAST DULWICH: An East Dulwich man has been charged with rape following an alleged incident near the station last week.

Gengiz Guvener, 46, of Grove Vale, was charged on November 3 with three counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault committed against one female victim. The 46-year-old man was also charged with affray.

He was detained by police on October 27 and taken to a central London hospital. He was discharged on November 2 and appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court the following day. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on December 1.

BID wins backing

LONDON BRIDGE: Team London Bridge has received overwhelming support from local businesses and will continue as the area’s designated business improvement district (BID) until at least 2021.

The results of a poll of businesses in the area were announced last week, with 89.1% voting in favour of the BID continuing a new five-year term beginning next April.

Nadia Broccardo, Executive Director of Team London Bridge said: “The team and board have worked hard delivering high quality, impactful projects for the business community over the past ten years.

“In our next term we will continue this good work while expanding our areas of influence to represent our businesses better in areas that matter most to them.”

CCTV released after morning incident on 343 bus

POLICE ARE hunting a man after an eleven-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on a bus in Southwark.

Officers have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place on the 343 bus on Tuesday June 30.

The young victim was sexually assaulted as the bus travelled down Thurlow Street in Walworth at around 8.30am. The suspect is described as a black man, aged mid to late twenties, with short dark hair, wearing a striped collared top.

Two out of hospital after taking legal high Spice PECKHAM

THREE MEN were hospitalised last week after they took a legal high off someone on the street in Peckham.

Police were called to reports of a man fitting in Staffordshire Street at 9.40pm on Thursday night.

When they arrived on scene the victim, believed to be in his twenties, told officers he had taken a drug known as ‘spice’ after being offered it for free.

The London Ambulance Service took the man to a south London hospital. He was later discharged.

Ten minutes later, police were called to Peckham High Street where a second man had similar symptoms. He too is believed to have taken the drug and was also taken to hospital and later discharged himself.

A third man, who was taken to hospital with the same symptoms just before 7pm was in a critical but stable condition. Police would not later comment on his condition.

The police confirmed that no offences were committed and their enquiries had been completed with no arrests.

Improving the way patient information is managed

A NEW process has been put in place in Southwark and Lambeth to allow patient information to be shared electronically and securely between GP practices, hospitals and community services.

The Local Care Record will allow GPs, and staff directly involved in a patient’s care at Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts, to view each other’s records safely and securely. The three hospital

organisations already share information between each other via KHP Online, however the Local Care Record means that this will now be opened up to allow shared information between GP practices, hospitals and community based care.

It is a secure ‘view-only’ clinical information portal and is only for the purposes of direct provision of care or treatment to a patient.

It will allow healthcare professionals to view test results, medication, previous treatment and

any other information which might help improve the care they can provide for people. It will make treatment safer and quicker by allowing them to view relevant information before making any clinical decisions.

Ten GP practices from across Southwark and Lambeth are piloting the new system starting in November, and it will be rolled out from January 2016.

Get prepared and stay well this winter COLD WEATHER does not have to go hand in hand with illness.

That’s the message from Southwark GPs who are calling on local residents to prepare for winter and follow advice on how to stay healthy.

Winter conditions can be seriously bad for our health, especially people aged 65 or over, and those with longterm conditions like asthma and other respiratory illnesses, heart disease and diabetes.

There are some steps we can all take to ward off common illnesses and avoid a trip to hospital.

• Keep yourself warm - heat your home to least 18 degrees C or (65F) if you can. Wear several layers of clothes as they trap warm air better that one bulky layer. Visit www.gov.uk/phe/keep-warm to make sure you are getting the support you are entitled to keep your home energy efficient.

• If you start to feel unwell, even if it’s just a cough or a cold, then get help from your pharmacist quickly before it gets more serious.

• Get your free flu jab as soon as possible if you are eligible for one – don’t forget that you can get this at pharmacies as well as from your GP. • Look out for other people who may need a bit of extra help over winter. People over 65 are the largest group admitted to hospital over winter. You can help by checking on neighbours or relatives to see if their food supplies are stocked up and make sure they have enough of any necessary medication.

Six months into his new role as MP, Neil Coyle talks to the News about knife crime, internet trolls, Jeremy Corbyn and paperwork EXCLUSIVE

SIX MONTHS have passed since Neil Coyle’s General Election victory but it seems that the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP has still not had time to properly catch his breath.

“Whirlwind I think is a good word,” he told the News over a coffee in Machine, the café-cum-bike repair shop across the road from his current office in Tower Bridge Road. “Some of it was a learning curve, some of it is incredibly enjoyable, some of it is absolutely awful.”

The awful side of parliamentary life, he explains, is having to face “a Conservative government that is going to put through a lot of policies that are very damaging” for the borough.

Already, however, he has had one major Westminster success.

He said: “Just this week I’ve had it confirmed that the government are accepting my amendments to the Welfare Bill, which means terminally ill people will get help quicker.

“As a backbencher and an opposition MP, within six months to have got the government to agree to use my amendment, it’s really good, I’m really pleased.”

The Newington resident admitted that the sheer pace of Parliament has taken some getting used to, after receiving 4000 pieces of casework from residents in just six months.

He said: “You’re just thrown in and told, pretty much, to do it yourself. I was handed an iPad, given a locker and told to get on with it.”

Outside of Westminster, the fledgling MP has also kept busy with events in Southwark – perhaps none more so than the tragic killing of sixteen-year-old Mohammed Dura-Rey, who was stabbed to death not far from Mr Coyle’s home.

Last month, Mr Coyle took part in an anti-knife march with the late teen’s grieving family, where he spoke out against gang violence and urged those with information to come forward.

He said: “How can you prepare yourself to talk to the mum or a sister of a sixteen-year-old stabbed to death? Just absolutely horrible. It was probably the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve had to do because there is nothing to prepare you.”

There are other issues that have taken some getting used to, including the great – and sometimes unrealistic – expectations constituents have for their new member of parliament.

He said: “People think you click your fingers and things get done. There are other people who assume that because you’re an MP you have to do exactly what they say.”

“I was away recently and Sarah was on her own. It was after one in the morning and someone was trying to get in the flat, which is unacceptable.

Some criticisms, however, have gone too far. While trolls on Twitter, Mr Coyle explained, can be ignored, people cross the line when they try to intimidate his family and invade his private life.

He said: “I was away recently and Sarah was on her own. It was after one in the morning and someone was trying to get in the flat, which is unacceptable.

It was someone who wanted to have a go at me for something.”

He rejected the suggestion that he may be overstretching himself by carrying on his council work alongside his parliamentary responsibilities – not to

mention his growing family, with he and his wife now expecting their first child. He said: “We’re not taking a council allowance, our loyalty as MPs is to people. There is very little power in the Labour group over us.

“Because I have casework staff I can do more - and I am doing more. As a councillor you don’t have the same stationary ability, for example, so I can print out hundreds of letters in parliament and get them out much quicker than I could as a councillor.

“In that respect I can reach more people, I can do it more often and I can do it faster and I have a team of staff

with me – people who are paid to do this as their single focus. I think it is an advantage almost rather than a disadvantage.”

He said that he would only consider

giving up his council work if his fellow Newington ward councillors, Eleanor Kerslake and Maisie Anderson, thought he wasn’t pulling his weight.

Mr Coyle also refused to dismiss or endorse Jeremy Corbyn – but did say that some of the criticisms directed at Labour’s leftwing leader were harsh.

He said: “There were four candidates in the final ballot. I don’t think any of them would have won us the 2020 election, because of what’s happening in Scotland the Tories gerrymandering with boundary reform.

“I’m a lot less doom mongering than someone like Simon Dansin, the Rochester MP who has been very, very critical of Jeremy. And to be honest I think Simon is overstepping the mark.

Whether he agrees with him politically, he would not have treated another leader like this.”

Six months into his time as MP, Neil Coyle is still clearly finding his feet in Westminster. His appetite for change, however, can’t be denied.

When asked what he would put forward if he is chosen from the ballot in the next Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Coyle found it difficult to choose just one issue to focus on, flitting from knife crime, to housing issues, to jobs, to pay and, finally, to morquio, the ultra-rare disease affecting six-year-old Millwall fan Harvey Brown.

“I’m fighting tooth and nail,” Mr Coyle said - and based on his first hectic six months of work, he certainly seemed to mean it.

Liz helps heart health research

A STROKE patient is helping to shape exciting cardiovascular research to improve the quality of care and develop new treatments for diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

When Liz Bestic, 62, suffered a stroke while on holiday in Greece in 2010 there was no clear cause, meaning there was no obvious way of preventing further strokes occurring. It was only when she came to Guy’s and St Thomas’ that the hole in her heart, which can increase the risk of a stroke, was discovered and operated on.

After the hole in her heart was closed, Liz was so grateful that she decided to join the Cardiovascular Patient Advisory Group – a forum for patients to ask questions and to provide feedback on the Trust’s research projects relating to the heart and blood vessels.

Trust tops NHS research league table

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ carries out more research studies than any other NHS trust in London, and is in the top three trusts nationally, according to new figures published in October.

The statistics from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network cover all NHS hospitals across England for 2014-15.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ conducted 459 research studies last year, 9% more than in 2013-14 and the fourth biggest increase in research activity of any NHS trust in England.

Professor Charles Wolfe, Director of Research and Development at Guy's and St Thomas', says: “Our researchers and clinicians – doctors, nurses and other staff – are actively involved in recruiting patients for a wide range of studies ranging from 'first in man' trials to local community projects.

“This research drives innovation, gives rise to better and more costeffective treatments, and improves the quality of patient care in the NHS."

Liz says: “I joined the patient advisory group because I wanted to give something back. I received amazing treatment from Guy’s and St Thomas’ and was keen to do whatever I could to help.”

The patient advisory group ensures that the patient perspective is a key part of research work. Patients review proposals for new studies, advise on how other patients could be recruited to participate in trials, and assist with the design of information materials so that they can be easily understood by patients and the public.

When discussing plans for a new treatment for ventricular tachycardia – a type of very fast heart rhythm that is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death – Liz and the other members of the group agreed that the proposals would be welcomed by patients.

They then worked to ensure that information sheets for patients were written in clear, jargon-free language, and that procedures were designed in a sensitive way that would reassure patients about the treatment they were going to receive.

Liz says: “Being a member of the group is a fascinating experience. I’m pleased that we’ve been able to ask questions from the patient perspective and to influence the design of new research and treatments. It’s great to be playing a part in the Trust’s brilliant cardiovascular work.”

Lucy Clack, cardiovascular research nurse, says: “Patients are central to everything we do, which is why it’s so useful to have patients who are willing to give up their time and get involved in our research.”

Skin cancer patient is an inspiration Cardiovascular research nurse Lucy Clack with Liz Bestic at St Thomas'

A PATIENT with a rare condition that led to him developing skin cancer multiple times is helping medical experts discover why some other patients are not protecting themselves from the sun.

Ben Fowler, 55, has Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic condition that affects the skin’s ability to repair damage from ultraviolet light, and greatly increases the risk of skin cancer.

His experience has inspired doctors from St John’s Institute of Dermatology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and psychologists at King’s College London to discover why some XP patients don’t protect themselves from deadly melanomas.

I can’t place elderly in unsafe care homes

SOUTHWARK NEWS was right to draw attention to the difficult situation that vulnerable residents like Mrs Burke are in, due to the worrying state of residential and nursing care across the country (‘My deaf and blind Mum is being sent to the back of beyond’, Southwark News October 29th, 2015).

I feel for her and her family, and the council is working hard with the private sector companies that run our care homes, and with health colleagues, to drive up standards in Southwark.

However, it would not be fair to Mrs Burke nor to any vulnerable resident, to place them in a care home that is unable to meet their needs.

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend a placement that may be unsafe or substandard, and so for now our only option may be to find good quality care a few miles away in other boroughs.

However, longer term we want to ensure there are excellent care home places for Southwark residents in Southwark, and we are currently working on plans to give our most vulnerable residents comfort and security in later life.

Close Rotherhithe Tunnel to cars?

SO ROTHERHITHE is still full of traffic chaos, Jamaica Road complete chaos, Lower Road complete chaos.

You would think after all these years someone,Transport for London , MPs, councillors would deal with this problem.

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey is at a stand still every morning from 7am and then from 2pm every afternoon there must be a way traffic can be filtered using another newly built crossing to Essex or Kent as this is where most of the

commuters live and travel to I am sure even they would welcome this as well as as the people who live here.

Another option would be to close Rotherhithe Tunnel to cars / vans etc and just have motorcycles/cyclists and pedestrians /emergency services use only it would make Rotherhithe and Bermondsy a little less noisey well apart from all the building work and road closures.

Mayor Boris Johnson has lost the plot I AM not surprised at all to read your front page in last

week’s News (‘Crackpot’ Boris slammed after revealing plans to build underground road tunnel from Canada Water to Clapham).

Over the years, he has been gradually loosing the plot with his ideas getting more outlandish.

Remember the Routemaster? This was part of his election manifesto for his first term. Yes he delivered on that, much to the anger of disabled people but it was only a Routemaster in name only. All the original Routemaster purists who clambered for its reintroduction will have been left disappointed to see it was nothing at all like the original. But yet Boris wasted £millions of your taxpayer money on this and other failed projects like the cable car.

Boris Island Airport in the Thames Estuary and now this an underground road between Canada Water and Clalpham.

What’s next Borris? An underwater colony in the Thames Estuary for the expected increase in the future of the population of London?

TfL 10,000 new homes welcome but we need more I'M DELIGHTED to see that Transport for London (TfL) has announced that it will be making land available for the building of some 10,000 new homes over the next ten years.

We all know that demand for housing is oustripping supply, so announcements to build more homes are welcome. However, 10,000 new homes is just a drop in the ocean and while TfL tells us it will release more land for development over time, we need hundreds of thousands of homes being built now, not over the next decade.

There are stations which could have homes built above them, old

yards which could be better used and unused buildings turned into homes. I urge TfL to work with developers to build more homes as quickly as possible.

Clubs can pay for their own policing

OUR LONDON neighbourhood police teams play a vital role across every part of London.

Police officers and Police Community Support Officers allocated to a specific area makes a huge difference in keeping our communities safe.

Yet there is a huge threat now looming.

Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service, is now pointing out that huge cuts will soon have to be made, leading to thousands of police officers being lost as well as PCSOs. We could be returning to the days of a remote and inaccessible police service more like the 1970s than the 21st century.

Up until now the Met have managed to stave off cuts in neighbourhood policing with the help of selling off many properties, but this money from one-off sales won’t last for long.

Tough decisions are now needed.

For a start the Met should be able to recover the full costs from policing professional football games. It is madness that football teams paying million pounds salaries to their players do not pay the full policing costs generated by their games.

However, we also need to go much further. If the Met is to retain neighbourhood police teams we have to ensure that the Met is properly funded.

Instead of cutting the council tax precept next year the better option might be to just freeze it to help prevent savage cuts to London’s police service Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM , Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on London Assembly

T THE end of October there were some fine days, with the pale and delicate sunlight so typical of autumn.

November usually brings fog and much cooler weather as the sun weakens.

With British Summer time over sunset now occurs in the late afternoon, we lose approximately two minutes of daylight each day until the winter solstice on 22nd December.

Leaf colour has been exceptional this year (due to warm days and cool nights) encouraging leaves to hang on and produce multi colours in vibrant shades.

If there is mild and dry weather during November it will be worth making the time to finish tidying perennials, clearing leaves and preparing the ground for planting. Much of the garden is dormant from November to March except for a few seasonal winter flowering shrubs such as Mahonia, Osmanthus and Viburnum – all have clusters of fragrant blooms which are very welcome in the depths of the winter months.

As this is the time of year to plan and plant - a particularly attractive tree to grow is the Olive. It is evergreen, tolerant of a range of conditions and is especially well suited to growing in containers. The Olive has pale, silvery green foliage with delicate long oval shaped leaves; it will flower if located in a warm spot in the garden or patio. The numerous white flowers are tiny (with a curious smell) and produce powdery yellow pollen. In warm summers the trees produce olives! The Olive tree is a slow grower eventually reaching 32 feet, but it is easy to keep compact and can be pruned to neat shapes.

A new display of plants for the window box will help to brighten the winter days. Always include some herbs, they are attractive, aromatic and edible – Thyme, Garlic chives, Rosemary prostratus and marjoram are hardy, add the seasonal Viola which produces colourful and cheerful little flowers. For the indoor window sill try Basil, Parsley and Dill.

And finally, it is time to start thinking about Christmas gifts for anyone with an interest in gardening. Packets of seeds, plants and books are likely to be welcome. One particular informative book is ‘The Postage Stamp Vegetable Garden: Grow Tons of Organic Vegetables in Tiny Spaces and Containers’ by Karen Newcomb. It has chapters on planning and preparing your space, suggestions for old heirloom varieties of vegetables, how to control pests and diseases. UNION ROYALTY was out in force last, standing together, as one for Neil Gore’s United We Stand, a marvellous play about the Shrewsbury 24 and that despicable event in 1973 when – allegedly – the government conspired to put innocent working men in jail.

Tom Watson MP, Len McCluskey (UNITE), plus supporters and members of the Shrewsbury 24 Campaign had been bussed in like flying pickets to show their support of this work.

United We Stand has evolved from earlier work written back in 1973 when the first pickets were imprisoned for conspiracy and affray, and has been popping up at strikes, industrial protests and factory gates in one form or another ever since, but this new production has a lot more new music and words, and focuses on Ricky Tomlinson (Jim Royle in BBC sitcom The Royle Family) and Des Warren, the two main players in this government scandal, whose secrets still lie buried beneath red tape and bureaucracy.

Neil Gore also acts in his play along with William Fox, and what performances they give. To put over the message of something both political and criminal they used song, poetry, mimicry, monologues, and impersonations of all the protagonists, from those builders trying to get a decent wage right up to the sentencing judge.

It is a rabble-rousing, rollicking, rollercoaster ride through the background and downfall of good men trying to get themselves and fellow workers a fair wage

Drinks not to be mist, as fog sets in GONG BAR

Curtains of rain billowed across the sky, periodically obscuring the broken peak of the Shard from the street below, writes Joey Millar...

From the window-side tables of Gong, the ultra-hip bar on the 52nd floor, the view was equally frustrating in its inconsistency.

When the weather occasionally cleared it was possible to take in a “who’s who” of the city’s landmarks: City Hall, Tower Bridge, the HMS Belfast, the Walkie Talkie building and the Gherkin all flickered in and out of sight. These moments were fleeting, however,

with the evening’s cityscape mostly consisting of the dull glow of London’s lights through killjoy drizzle.

Luckily, the interior and cocktail menu of the Chinese-infused venue more than makes up for the skyscraper’s occasionally sub-par panoramic.

Anticipation seems to be a big part of the Gong experience. Even getting to the bar from the ground floor is something of an odyssey, involving two sets of lifts and a quick wander across the 32nd floor.

The bar itself, however, is well worth the gruelling ascent.

My friend Bero and I were led to a table by the window where, with not much to look at thanks to the weather, we analysed the menu. I went for Bermondsey Bubbles, a light cocktail made using locallydistilled Bermondsey London Dry Gin, while Bero went for a Mantras.

At £17 a pop, we were hoping for something a little special, and we weren’t disappointed.

“Holy s**t there’s a plant in mine!” said Bero as our drinks arrived. Indeed there was, with what looked like a small herb bush resting atop the ice in his glass. His Mantras

tasted “like a meal – but in a good way”, a ringing endorsement considering we had both skipped dinner. Mine was sadly foliage-free but equally enjoyable nonetheless.

Our second round of drinks also went down well, with an extra level of theatre accompanying Bero’s order of Silk Road.

“Don’t look inside,” said our waitress coyly as she took away our empty glasses and replaced them

with a single wicker basket. We sat there patiently for the best part of ten seconds but eventually our curiosity got the better of us and we took off the lid.

“Oh good lord, it’s just flowers!” said Bero with characteristic excitement. Inside the basket was a small bowl filled with purple petals, a somewhat bizarre discovery that didn’t do much to add to the rapidly declining air of masculinity on our boys’ night out.

The waitress returned soon after and gave us a knowing look despite our feigned excitement when she took off the lid again and poured his drink into the bowl, she knew we had peeked already. Nonetheless, both drinks were deemed successes even though my order of Elizabeth’s Diadem was again lacking florally.

If you thought it wasn’t possible to be jealous over the amount of petals in a drink, you were sadly mistaken.

Following a quick trip to the bar’s bathroom, which surely boasts one of the best views from a urinal in the whole of London, we began our trek back down the skyscraper. Leaving behind the glitz and glamour of Gong and arriving in the rain at ground level was tough, but luckily

we were buoyed by the alcohol – not to mention the excitement that comes with experiencing previously unthinkable levels of cocktail-based vegetation.

New book reveals the Forty Elephants’ code of conduct Still in her early twenties, Alice Diamond of Browning Street, Walworth, became the Queen of the Forty Elephants and with her came a greater propensity for violence.

A tall and formidable woman, Alice was known as a brawler whose numerous bejewelled rings handily doubled up as knuckledusters.

The gang carried out industrialscale thefts from warehouses, the seduction and subsequent blackmail of straying ‘gentlemen’ and carefully planned shoplifting scams at the West end’s finest stores – earning members hundreds of pounds a day.

Newspapers in Britain and America developed a fascination with the Forty Elephants as their

women as “aristocrats of crime”, dressed in their pilfered finery with all the airs and graces of the upper classes needed to put sales assistants at their ease.

He also uses the terms “battlefield tactics” and “military operation” to describe the level of preparation and organisation behind the gang’s activities.

The Forty were broken down into cells of four or five and allocated a patch where they would operate for a time. Members would observe their target clothes and jewellery shops, paying attention to when staff went on breaks and when inexperienced attendants were on duty.

crime sprees spread out of London and into seaside towns and smaller cities. Police urged editors not to give the criminal sorority the oxygen of publicity but despite this warning a Sunday paper called the Reynolds News, planned a series of articles devoted to the dastardly dames.

In preparing his contribution Elephant & Castle Gang associate, Dan Johnston, made revealing notes on the exploits of the band of women he had such close access to.

The series was pulled before publication but Johnston’s records detail the Forty's scams and a code of conduct known as the ‘Hoister's Code’.

This included not drinking the night before a job, not wearing the clothes you had stolen and never helping the police.

Loyalty was of paramount importance as members were frequently arrested and police would try and turn tricksters into lifetime informers. Fictional alibis would be supplied by fellow gang members and money put aside for families when members were sent to prison.

Johnston’s notes described the

and store detectives by acting suspiciously, like taking items close to the doorways as if they might steal them, insisting they just wanted to examine them in the light when challenged. Well-known veteran thieves were also used for this purpose as they would be followed around by security while their lesser-known accomplices were stowing jewels and silks in hidden pockets secreted in their dresses.

This troupe of lawless women from the Elephant and Castle, though frequently arrested, successfully operated for more than twenty years to the endless frustration of the police and West end store detectives. They earned an international reputation for their intelligence, cunning, and bizarrely, their strong work ethic.

IN THE roaring twenties, a girl-gang like no other the world has seen since, lifted themselves out of a life of grim poverty south of the river with their brains, braun and feminine wiles, writes Amelia Burr...

The shoplifting, blackmailing, house-breaking and fast living of the band of women known as the Forty Elephants (because members originated from around the Elephant and Castle) were masterminded by their notorious Queen.

Alice Diamond and her mob of miscreants have become the stuff of myth and legend, but a new book, Alice Diamond and the Forty Elephants, has uncovered police reports, court hearing logs and reporter’s notes on the gang which reveal the extent to which the Forty Elephants operated like a business corporation with a strict code of conduct.

The extensive web of women, which numbered more like seventy in its heyday, approached criminality with a cold professionalism and ruthlessness assumed to be the preserve of their male counterparts - The Elephant & Castle Gang, formed a hundred years earlier.

The women they were related to and married to were often involved in their dirty dealings but rarely reaped the rewards.

It was common for bands of mothers, sisters and daughters socialise with one another for protection and to steal to fund their enjoyment.

Around 1890 this informal activity became organised as the women broke away and formed their own gang and soon earned a surprisingly violent reputation, unafraid wield a hatpin, a razor wrapped in a handkerchief or their bare fists in their robberies and scams.

EX-FISHER ABC amateur Danny Carr started his professional boxing career in style last Friday with a knockout win against Aaron Finn.

The 25-year-old, who will be known as DP Carr in the paid ranks due to a name clash, unleashed a devastating shot that floored Finn in the second round of their four round bout.

The light-welterweight impressed old amateur coach Steve Hiser who was at ringside at the Harrow Leisure Centre, along with a contingent of Carr’s old amateur club team mates.

Hiser said after the contest: “He knocked his man spark out in the second round.

Danny has always been able to punch and now he has got his act together I think he could do very well as a pro.

“He seems to have a job that allows him to train and prepare for fights properly and that is good for him.

“He is also not a teenager and I think that will stand him in good stead too. I was happy for him and it was great to watch him with the other Fisher boys who went along to support him.”

Joyce progress in NABCs DOMINIC JOYCE, from Fisher Boxing Club, picked up a win on Sunday in his first outing in the National Amateur Boxing Championship (NABC).

The sixteen-year-old came through his opening contest against Joe Tindall of St Mary’s Boxing Club.

Club coach Steve Hiser said: “Dominic can beat anybody if he is in the right frame of mind. From the reports I had he boxed really well and it is all the more impressive as he has not been too well of late but he stepped back in the ring and got the win.”

The U18 Basketball England Conference match up saw Rowe finish the game with ten points, six rebounds, six assists and seven steals.

By the contests conclusion every player on the Southwark team got on the score sheet with second year guard Timothy Adetuyole picking up fifteen points and nine rebounds.

Legends associate coach Saheed Maja said: “It was a competitive game, we are glad we came up with the win and we are happy with our record so far.

“We will now be aiming to take the momentum into our next game”.

The next home game for Southwark Legends will be against Brixton Topcats on Saturday November 14.

Tip-off is at 11.30am at the Damilola Taylor Centre on East Surrey Grove in Peckham.

PECKHAM FIGHTER Johnny Garton will return to the ring next month as he prepares for an English title clash in the New Year.

The last time ‘The Pexican’ was in the ring he stopped Martin Welsh in six rounds in a final eliminator bout for the English welterweight crown.

DOCKLANDS U14’S bagged five goals to maintain top spot in their Selkent League table but despite the deluge of goals they only came away with a point.

The visitors started quickly and went in front when a cross from Daniel Diagana led to an own goal.

Harry Watson's great long ball down the field to Diagana led to a second Docklands goal, when Diagana played a great one two with Josh Hyam leaving Niyi to make it

2-0.

But sloppy defending soon saw that lead evaporate before a cracking shot from Jodie Piper from 30 yards out restored the Southwark sides lead.

Docklands started very slowly in the second half and Weigall took advantage to level things up once again.

A penalty award for handball saw the home side take the lead for the first time before they established a two goal advantage after a period of heavy pressure.

But Docklands kept on battling and a foul on Joe Coombes in the box led to a Docklands penalty which Diagana netted.

The Southwark side were unlucky not to equalise when a John Hayley effort hit the post but in the last seconds of the game a cross from Diagana led to Niyi netting a late leveller.

AN INSPIRED display of shot stopping from Guru Nanak keeper Sundeep Hayre almost nabbed his side a point but a solitary Billy Jolley goal was enough to secure the Southwark side victory.

Jolley broke the deadlock five minutes before the half time break when he got on the end of a Billy Shinners pass before slotting home.

Before that Shinners forced Hayre into a top save after Stansfeld initially stumbled out of the blocks in this contest.

In the second half Hayre pulled off four saves that prevented certain goals, giving his side a fighting chance until the final whistle but despite this the Bermondsey outfit held on for three points.

Whilst they lost 5-2 to big spenders Greenwich Borough last Saturday it can’t be ignored that bricks and mortar are now being laid at their new home in St Paul’s Playing Field in the north of Southwark.

The News caught up with club chairman Ben Westmancott at their temporary home of Champion Hill on Saturday, and he gave us an update on plans for the supporters owned club, reformed in 2009 after Fisher Athletic were wound up, in the long and short term:-

Q: Can you give us the latest on the new ground in Rotherhithe?

Ben Westmancott: “As anybody who has walked past can see the building work is progressing nicely and the main building is going up and you can see the outlines of where windows are going to be.

“The latest we know after talking to builders McArdle is they say the work is due to be completed by March next year.

“This is the first time we have been able to pin down the completion date to an actual month, so this is exciting for us.

“Realistically we will move back properly for the beginning of next season. Once the ground facility is ready we will be able to use it in a variety of ways, but realistically next season gives

us time to do the administration and paperwork we need to move ground.

“We have been told March but we have all to be aware that these things do slip sometimes.”

Q: Who will own the new ground and how do Fisher fit into that?

BW: “The ground will be owned by the council. Once we can agree a usage schedule and we have a business plan that stacks up we can talk about what the relationship between the council and Fisher will actually be.

“So at the moment we just need to narrow that down to figures on a paper with signatures on the bottom.

“But there is no doubt in my mind the council want us to be there, and have from the work go, and it has been great to have the council and Fairview [the developers] support so far.

“To my mind once we have gone home, we have gone home for good.”

Q: How will moving home change Fisher FC?

BW: “The change will be wonderful and long awaited. When you are at somebody else’s ground you can’t make money from the bar, tea bar and are very limited on the money you can bring in.

“There is little room to grow. By going back to our ground it opens up possibilities. Ok, the first team will be there every other Saturday but what is going to happen the rest of the time.

“We are very keen to have a life within the community so schools can play there, we will have children’s teams, women’s football, disability football and

“That is the difference. It is not just about a first team with some youth teams playing out in Bromley but it’s the club in a community that people feel part of and it means something to them.

“The club gets a home, it’s not just the first team coming home, the whole club gets a home. We are refining our plans about how that could work and our vision is coming together on this and I am very excited about it.

“Our next aspiration is to have an employed person who can build the club in terms of all this.”

Q: What is it like seeing the new ground thinking about where you were in 2009 when you reformed?

BW: “It’s a little bit emotional. I remember the meeting when the old club had wound up and we wanted to grow again and we had nothing.

“We had no money, no players or ground but we just had a dream. To be able to turn that dream into a reality is quite wonderful and I feel quite privileged to be part of it.

“It’s bloody hard work. I remember talking to Kevin Rye [then working at

Supporters Direct] who was supportive but said that we had to be aware this is a long term project, it’s not a couple of years and it would be sorted.

“I said that would be fine and that was 2009. So it will have taken around seven years to get home but thinking about it that is pretty darn good.

“I having been dreaming about what the first game back will be like and what the atmosphere will be like.

“I have a notion but it won’t be real until I am standing there and the players are coming out onto the ground.

“We are not counting any chickens yet.

There is still a lot of work to do, and in fact the work grows now but it will be worth it.”

O’BRIEN IN LINE FOR LEAGUE AWARD

MILLWALL ATTACKER Aiden O’Brien has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award for October.

The nomination is recognition for the player's superb recent form as his three league goals helped Millwall climb to seventh in the table, two points off the play-off spots.

His two goals at Sheffield United were arguably his most impressive contributions as an under-strength Lions side won 2-1 at Bramall Lane.

O’Brien, who turned 22 on October 4, also netted against Northampton as Millwall progressed to the area quarter-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

O’Brien showed his versatility throughout the month, playing on either flank and up front, and he has become a key player for Millwall in recent months following his return from an injury he suffered in preseason.

The other three players up for the award will be familiar to Millwall fans this season.

Coventry striker Adam Armstrong scored twice at The Den in August as Tony Mowbray’s side crushed the Lions 4-0. Peterborough’s Jon Taylor grabbed a double against Neil Harris’ men in their 5-3 win at London Road on October 3, while Bradford’s centre-back Reece Burke helped nullify the threat of Steve Morison and Lee Gregory last weekend.

Gary Caldwell (Wigan), Phil Parkinson (Bradford), Dean Saunders (Chesterfield) and Mark Robins (Scunthorpe) have been nominated for the manager awards.

The winner will be announced on Friday, November 6.

FORMER DEFENDER Robbie Ryan will be taking part in the Legends Tour on Saturday, November 14 starting at 1.30pm.

Ryan joined Millwall in 1998 and went on to play 256 times for the Lions, appearing in the FA Cup final in 2004. Horne made his debut in 1986 and was part of the Millwall squad that played in the top flight of English football at the end of that decade.

Former Republic of Ireland international Connolly, who joined the club in the summer after a long playing career, isn’t putting a limit on what the youngsters can achieve this season.

“There are a few ways that it can go in a competition,” he said. “One example is the first team when they got to the FA Cup final against Manchester United in 2004. No one anticipated that when they were playing Telford in one of the earlier rounds it was possible.

“You can but dream. I remember

being part of a Southampton team in the Johnstone’s Paint when we played Torquay and it went to penalties, and no one thought then either that we’d end up at Wembley playing in front of 70,000 people.

“It all has to start somewhere. You’re in it to win, or at least to do the best that you can. The lads gave a good account of themselves against Dover.

Sometimes it helps being in the earlier rounds because it settles the nerves and you can find your feet.

“We might be the underdogs if we get to later rounds when we come up against academies that can put out U17 sides, U18 sides. We can’t do that because we just don’t have the numbers. We’ll be up against it then but that’ll be a different kind of learning for the players.”

THE PARTY will take place on Sunday, December 20 from 2pm until 5pm. In attendance there will be players, magicians, face-painters, Father Christmas and a DJ, as well as the Lions Live Radio team.

CARLOS PENS NEW DEAL

Carlos Edwards has had his contract extended until the end of the season. The 37-year-old right-back has been in superb form for Neil Harris’ side in their push up the table.

And his ambitions haven’t been blunted, despite his veteran status.

Edwards said: "They say hard work pays off and the contract extension was something the club and I were working towards for some time.

"The club has kept its promise and now I'm looking to help Millwall back to the Championship.

AFC FYLDE and Millwall meet for the first time this weekend in the first round of the FA Cup. But who are the little club with the big ambitions? We take a look at Saturday’s opponents...

Where are they?

The Lancashire side, whose ground

is less than ten miles east of Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road, are currently top of National League North, the sixth tier of the English football league system.

They play their home games at the 3,180-capacity Kellamergh Park, which they are hoping to leave in 2016-17 to move into a multi-million pound 6,000capacity stadium.

Recent form They defeated Stalybridge Celtic 5-0 last weekend to go a point clear in a league that also contains FC United of Manchester, Boston United and Stockport.

They are the highest scorers in the division with 31 goals in 14 games.

The northern club have already came through three rounds of qualifying to get to the first round proper. The beat Stockport 1-0 in the second qualifying round before hammering Coleshill Town 9-0 and then knocking out Barrow.

NEIL HARRIS will be hoping that Sid Nelson recovers from a foot injury to provide back-up for Byron Webster and Mark Beevers.

Tony Craig’s injury means Webster and Beevers are currently the only two fit senior centre-backs at the club.

Millwall were boosted this week with the news that Carlos Edwards has signed a new deal to take him up to the end of the season, while midfielder George Saville has had his loan from Wolves extended until January.

However, Saville and Shane Ferguson have not been given permission by parent clubs Wolves and Newcastle to play on Saturday.

Shaun Williams came through last weekend unscathed after two games out with a back injury and could be partnered in midfield by Ben Thompson, who is available again after a one-game ban. Ed Upson is expected back in training next week but Jimmy Abdou is still about a month away from a return.

Defender misses his playing days, but enjoying life as a Millwall coach

“Long gone are the days when you could rant and rave at everyone”

The 2015 version of Andy Frampton has toned it down a bit.

The message hasn’t been diluted but the delivery method is more subtle than the one documented by Michael Calvin in his book on Millwall’s 2009-10 season, Family, when Frampton eviscerated winger Martin for pulling out of a tackle against Brighton.

It’s a message that is continuing to be absorbed by this current Millwall team as they develop a resilience that was absent earlier in the season when defensive frailties seemed like they were a long way from being eradicated.

Frampton joined the club part-time during the summer as part of a revamped coaching structure and combined the role with obtaining the first part of his UEFA A licence at St George’s.

Meanwhile his former teammates Neil Harris and Dave Livermore were attempting to find solutions to Millwall’s uncertain early form.

Frampton went full-time at the beginning of September and whether it’s a coincidence or not his new role has coincided with a new mean streak in this Millwall side.

Perhaps that characteristic can also partly be traced back to the fury Harris felt with his players after they conceded three set-piece goals in the 3-2 defeat to Barnsley at The Den in August. Harris criticised his players for not taking responsibility but, pointedly, he also highlighted a lack of cynicism in their play when he said Lee Martin should have fouled higher up the pitch before Conor Hourihane flighted a free-kick to Lewin Nyatanga for an injury-time winner.

That vulnerability at set-pieces has been replaced with a hunger to not let anything in the box be won easily by the opposition and it’s easy to imagine that not wanting to be on the wrong end of a rebuke from Frampton is at least one factor in that desire.

“It’s very important that we fight for each other, really,” Frampton said. “I think we can see that out on the pitch every week now.”

The former defender says he can still raise his voice in the dressing room, but he is learning that players need to receive important information in different ways.

He explained: “It is very different on the coaching side, there are a number of other factors and it’s something I’m having to learn very quickly. Not that

I’ve put anyone’s nose out of joint but it’s something I certainly have to work on to get the best out of the players.

When I was a player I could rant and rave. I’m quite vocal before games, even now, but it’s in a different way and you’re just trying to get every ounce of energy out of them for 90 minutes.

“That’s one of the trickiest jobs in football, the manager would say, and Dave. You have to try to get to know the player and what makes them tick, and everyone’s very different. Long gone are the days when you could rant and rave at everyone. Some people do need that, but others need an arm around them and an explanation about what they’re doing.”

He also has a simple answer when asked how the improvement that has seen the side keep four consecutive clean sheets at The Den has come about.

“Work,” he says, adding: “The manager and Dave have been working

tirelessly on trying to tighten us up and both Beevs (Mark Beevers) and TC (Tony Craig), as well as both full-backs, have been terrific and it’s been brilliant to watch. Part of the battle is stopping the ball going in the back of our net and if we can do that we’ve got a chance of winning our games.

“It’s work on the training pitch. We don’t just defend as a four, we defend as an eleven. We get the mental side of the game instilled in them. We’ve got a lot of guys now who are not afraid to speak their minds, and that’s part of the battle.

They’re vocal in what they want and what they want to achieve. Young players look up to that and realise what it takes and the mentality you need to play for the club. It is coming.”

It’s not a surprising answer from someone who spends his Wednesdays ‘off’ working in the family business of property development. He says some

players search for something to replace playing and maybe don’t know what that is, whereas he agrees it suited him when injury ended his playing days at the end of last season to go into coaching. And as if his two jobs aren’t enough to keep him busy, he also has three young kids at home.

He had surgery on his troublesome ankle injury when he finished playing and he hopes it won’t give him any more problems, though he does miss the time off he had during his career compared to now when a work day can start before 7am and not finish until 11pm.

“I loved playing, every minute of my career,” he admits. “It was a disappointing way to go out with the injury and the operation I had to have on my ankle. But to get to 35 as a player, I was very pleased with that and the opportunity came up here I couldn’t turn it down.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to get into coaching as soon as I did.”

Millwall face a tricky FA Cup tie this weekend against a non-league side but one that is upwardly mobile and has a chairman with Football League ambitions.

And Frampton is adamant the same work ethic will be applied to avoid the possibility of a cup upset: “We prepare them as we have done in the games so far this season. Nothing will change.

That’s what we aim to do to make sure they do their jobs to the best of their ability. There are different hurdles around the preparation side of it, but we’ll make do with what we’ve got and there will be no excuses going out on Saturday. We’ll go out to try to get that win and get into the next round.”

And if it doesn’t work out this weekend he still won’t be letting anyone off the hook that easily.

MARK BEEVERS was linked with a move away from Millwall earlier this season but now finds himself the cornerstone of a defence that has conceded just two goals in six games and hasn’t let a goal in at home since September.

He described his future as “up in the air” when he was left out of the squad for the 32 defeat to Barnsley in August but is now a key figure in Millwall’s back four.

Beevers was named NewsAtDen’s Player of the Month for October, as voted on by Millwall fans, after a string of imposing defensive performances as well as goals against Peterborough and Blackpool that brought his tally to four for the season.

Last Saturday’s opponents Bradford were one of those clubs rumoured to be interested in taking the Barnsley-born defender back up north before the transfer window shut, but after talks with Neil Harris he regained his place in a side that improved vastly in September and then climbed eight places to seventh in the League One table in October.

Beevers explained: “It was a bit up in the air and the manager wanted to put it to bed and so did I. I just wanted to try and get in the team. I managed to do that and there has been an upturn in results and here we are in seventh position.

“That’s credit to the boys and credit to the manager. We’ve worked on areas we needed to work on and it’s paid dividends on matchdays. We’ve got the points we needed to get to put us where we are now.

NEIL HARRIS has highlighted numerous times this season his players’ willingness to put their “bodies on the line” and that was in evidence again in the 0-0 draw with Bradford – but the ethic resulted in a real blow for Millwall.

Tony Craig displayed typical bravery to fling himself at James Hanson to block the big striker’s shot, and it was immediately clear he had suffered a serious injury when he failed to get back to his feet with play going on.

“It’s not just me that’s keeping the clean sheets, it’s a team game.

I think that the shape of our team has been spot on in the last two weeks.

“We have two banks of four and as soon as we lose the ball we get in the right positions and have been able to limit other teams to very few chances.

“The chances they have got haven’t gone in whereas at the start of the season we had a bit of bad luck where the opponents would have one or two shots and they’d end up in the back of our net.

Sometimes clubs go through stages like that but hopefully, fingers crossed, we’ve come through that now.”

Despite Millwall’s excellent recent form Beevers re-emphasised the difficulty in trying to gain promotion the season after relegation.

“I think at the start of the season a lot of people would have expected us to be where we are now if not a little higher,” he said.

“This league isn’t as simple as that,

though. You get relegated from the Championship and it’s not as easy as bouncing straight back at the first attempt.

“There are some good teams in this league, some who could compete with sides in the Championship.

“This is a tough league, and we knew that. It’s a battle.”

Devante Cole fell under Craig’s challenge but the award would have been harsh and a draw was just about a fair result.

“I think it was two good teams, two well-organised, two well-drilled teams with size and aggression and set-piece specialists in both sides,” Harris said afterwards. “We knew it was going to be a battle and the week they had helped them and their style of play and I thought my boys stood up to it really well. I thought we got stronger as the game went on but didn’t quite have the quality in the end.”

The Lions manager also paid tribute to goalkeeper Jordan Archer who, while under-worked, let his defenders know they had erred when almost allowing Kyel Reid in to score at the back post in the first half.

“He’s a winner,” Harris said of Archer.

“He doesn’t want the ball to go in his net.

He demands standards and if you feel someone has made a slight error or doesn’t do his job then I want my players to tell each other. As long as they come in and have a beer together or have a cup of tea together I’m happy for them to show signs of their passion on the pitch, as I did.”

Captain set for a spell on the sidelines

MILLWALL CAPTAIN Tony Craig will see a specialist this week when the damage to his injured knee will be further assessed.

Craig sustained the injury in the second half of last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bradford at The Den and it was immediately apparent he was in trouble after he failed to get to his feet following a tackle on James Hanson.

The 30-year-old defender had a scan on Monday and the results confirmed

he had sustained damage to the lateral ligament and hamstring tendon.

The injury is a huge blow for Millwall and boss Neil Harris will hope the defender is not another longterm absentee.

Club physio Bobby Bacic was highlighting the positive this week after many fans had feared the worst.

Bacic said: “He has escaped cruciate ligament damage, but has significantly damaged his lateral ligament and hamstring tendon.

“He is currently in a protective brace and on crutches and will see the surgeon later in the week. This will

allow the swelling and pain to settle so the surgeon can fully evaluate the knee and decide the best course of action.”

It’s not the first time Craig has had to deal with serious injury, but Millwall coach Andy Frampton believes the Lions captain has the character to deal with this latest setback.

Frampton admitted, however, that the former Brentford defender’s leadership in the dressing room will be missed.

The Millwall coach said: “Tony, with the experience he’s got, will be

able to cope pretty well with this disappointment. I spoke to him (Monday). He’s an important piece of the puzzle at our club and we’re fully in support of what he’ll have to go through. We’re going to be here to help him as much as he needs it. With his experience he knows what it’ll take to come back fitter and stronger.

“The main reason for bringing him back was to bring that type of leadership into the group. We have some very good leaders in that group now and they’re going to have to step up and fill the void in the time that Tony is out injured.”

Striker Steve Morison took the captain’s armband when Craig was substituted with a knee injury against Bradford.

But Harris said Morison won’t necessarily continue in the role this weekend against AFC Fylde.

He explained: “Steve was the natural decision at the time but I’ll have to give it some thought. I never named a vicecaptain because I don’t think there is a need to.

“I’ll make a decision towards the weekend as to who will captain the side on Saturday.

“It will depend on team selection as to who takes it on. I think it’ll be a lot clearer who that will be, if Tony is out, against Colchester in the next league game. We’ll have to be patient with Tony and wait to see the news on him.”

Harris and his management team significantly trimmed a bloated squad over the summer and he accepts that leaves Millwall vulnerable when they have to deal with injuries and suspensions.

The Lions have coped with the absences of Ed Upson and Jimmy Abdou, going unbeaten since the pair were injured at Peterborough last month.

Craig’s knee problem now depletes another area of the squad, but Harris is hoping that Sid Nelson will be an option against either Fylde this weekend or Plymouth in the Football League Trophy next Tuesday night.

He said: “We’ve a small squad so we’re always an injury or suspension away from being a bit light. We continuously monitor the centre-back situation. We’re hopeful that Sid will be back in contention for one if not both the cup games.”
