THE FAMILY of a “cherished and loved” young man who was stabbed to death in Peckham have made a desperate plea for witnesses to help the police.

Ernest Kalawa was found on December 30 with multiple stab wounds, including a slash on his neck, in Haymerle Road.

Paramedics pronounced the 24-year-old dead at the scene after they were called just after 5.30pm...

What will happen in 2017?

S

o what do we have to look forward to in 2017?

In our review of the year we have made much of the nightmare road and rail situation for local and commuters alike (see pages 1011). There is little hope of a let up in the start of the year for rail commuters as strikes continue.

However, Tower Bridge has reopened drivers and do appear to be getting their heads around the double roundabout in Elephant & Castle. Bakerloo Line extension is not expected until 2028 at the earliest, but its announcement in 2016 was great news for residents in the north at least.

As always regeneration will feature heavily in the paper in the next twelve months. The Aylesbury regen has more to come as leaseholders fight compulsory purchase orders. And in Bermondsey the same fight around Millwall could put the club’s future into jeopardy.

The council’s ruling administration and the New Mayor of London have both been elected on a promise of finding a solution to the housing crisis. The News will be keeping an eye on how good the pledge of 11,000 new council homes over 30 years is going.

This is expected to be achieved by 2043, so we have a long way to go, however 1,500 are pledged by 2018, so we have a target to hit this year. The difference between social, council and affordable homes needs to be considered carefully on every development in the borough.

Victories in 2016 should come to fruition this year. Two that come to mind are the return of Fisher Athletic Football club to Rotherhithe after over a decade in exile in Dulwich. They should have a good partner leasing the ground from the council with Millwall Community Scheme, giving a promising future for generations of youngsters in the borough In Peckham the lido will be well underway as they got the money to start the site surveys and then the building work.

A WALWORTH family have gone all out to make their Christmas lights display one of Southwark’s best, and it’s all for the charity that saved their son’s life.

It takes them up to five days working with their neighbours in the flat above to sort out the incredible display, which has snowballed over the years.

It goes back to when Alex Mustafa was diagnosed with leukaemia, aged on four. It rocked his family, who live in Albany Road on the Aylesbury Estate.

After making a recovery, Alex then relapsed with a second bout of the disease when he was twelve. This time his doctors were out of options, as they feared further rounds of chemotherapy would be too damaging for his young body.

That, his dad Gunalty said, was when the Anthony Nolan Trust reached out and offered them a lifeline.

Gunalty, 64, said: “The lights are to raise money for Anthony Nolan.

They got in touch with us, and helped Alex find someone who matched with him for a bonemarrow transplant. That was the only thing that could help him.

“We do these lights because we want to put out an appeal. We want to raise money for Anthony Nolan.

“We don’t collect money from people, but we ask friends to donate to them. And we get a lot of people that come and talk to us about the lights, with children who want to come and have a look, so then we tell them and their parents about the charity.”

Alex, now 21, and working as a teaching assistant at St Paul’s Primary School, said: “I had to miss

one year of school in Year Four, and in Year Eight. It was two years of my education that I lost.

“We think the lights add a bit of cheer to the area. People stop and

take photos with their kids next to the Santa.”

Gunalty added: “We've been doing the lights since he was diagnosed, and it’s grown every year.

“It took us five days this time.

Our neighbours who live above us join in as well.”

Two stabbings in the first days of the New Year

PECKHAM: Two men in their twenties have been stabbed in separate incidents since the start of the New Year.

A 21-year-old was found wounded by paramedics on Monday, January 2 in Peckham High Street, having been called to the scene at about 7pm.

Police have confirmed that the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and abdomen.

And on Tuesday, January 3 a man staggered into Asda in Rye Lane at about 7pm with a slash wound to his arm. Again, the victim’s injuries were not life threatening, though police said he was in a “serious condition” at the time this paper went to press. Both men were taken to south London hospitals following the separate incidents. There have been no arrests.

Clarification

ON DECEMBER 22, 2016 the News printed a story: ‘King’s and Tommy’s both fail to hit A&E waiting list targets’, in which we stated that ‘one patient waited nearly 46 hours to be seen at King’s A&E’.

We would like to clarify that the patient had been seen and assessed, but was waiting for space to become available in another hospital for specialist help.

King’s have made clear that demand for mental health beds unfortunately exceeds capacity in London, and it can take prolonged periods for an appropriate bed to become available. In these instances, patients are assessed, monitored, kept under observation and cared for in the Emergency Department until a bed becomes available. This ensures they are safe and continue to receive specialist care.

Witnesses say Ernest was chased and jumped on by two men

THE FAMILY of a “cherished and loved” young man who was stabbed to death in Peckham have made a desperate plea for witnesses to help the police.

Ernest Kalawa was found on December 30 with multiple stab wounds, including a slash on his neck, in Haymerle Road.

Paramedics pronounced the 24-year-old dead at the scene after they were called just after 5.30pm.

Police taped off a grassy area outside Deerhurst House where Ernest was said to have been chased and jumped on by two attackers.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday, and released on bail until a date in April. A post-mortem held on January 1 confirmed the cause of death was multiple stab wounds.

Ernest’s grieving family made a statement on Tuesday via the Met Police.

The family said: "Ernest's tragic death is a massive loss to the family. Everyone is in shock and struggling to come to terms with the loss of our son, brother, cousin, and friend. At the moment the pain is still very fresh.

"Our family only really want time and space to grieve in private, and ask that the press and media respect our wishes.

Ernest was loved and cherished and we all miss him deeply."

Three young men who spoke to the News as they paid their respects by lighting candles at the huge circle of flowers said: “He was cherished.

“He was a good guy, and very much loved.”

A woman whose flat in Denstone overlooked the spot where Ernest was killed, said she had been walking with her sister there just half an hour before the attack.

“There was a gentleman who lives near here who was walking his two dogs and saw [Ernest] being chased,” the woman said.

“He said he was chased by two boys wearing all black.

“When he saw that the boy they were beating up was still on the floor, he went over.

“They stabbed the boy in the neck. He tried to help the boy, and held him. The police took his DNA.” She added: “I knew the boy, I had seen him hanging around here a few years ago.

No one had the right to take his life.

“I have lived here sixteen years, nothing like this ever happens, you can leave your door open during the day on this estate.”

Detective chief inspector Lee Watling from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "Did you see anything suspicious around 5.30pm last Friday afternoon near Haymerle Road or Frensham Street, Peckham?

"I am extremely keen to hear from anyone who was in the area of this tragic

New Year’s Day arrest over alleged ‘imitation firearm’

A MAN is set to stand trial after being charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence in Bermondsey.

Costel Marius Ghiorghita, aged 33, appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (January 3) charged with possession of an imitation firearm in Jamaica Road.

The defendant, who is of no fixed abode, was arrested at about 1pm on New Year’s Day after specialist

firearm officers were called to reports of gun shots heard in King’s Stairs Gardens.

Ghiorghita appeared before magistrates on Tuesday charged with possession of a Bruni Mod 92 8mm blank firing pistol in Jamaica Road with intent to cause a member of the public to believe that unlawful violence would be used against them.

He was remanded into custody to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Tuesday, January 31. Two other men, aged 25 and 49, were also arrested in connection with the alleged incident and bailed to return in late January.

New Sainsbury’s to open this month

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: The new Sainsbury’s supermarket in New Kent Road will open on January 11, a spokesperson for the company has said.

Based at the ground floor of the Trafalgar Square apartment block on the junction with Elephant Road, the shop will cover 9,000 sq ft and support 92 jobs.

The store had been scheduled to open before Christmas.

Residents urged to recycle trees

SOUTHWARK: Residents are being urged to recycle their Christmas trees as the festive season comes to an end for another year.

Southwark Council is encouraging anyone with a real Christmas tree to remove all decorations, including the pot or stand, before recycling it.

Those who have a food or garden waste collection can have their tree taken away as part of their normal household collection simply by leaving it out by their bin.

Alternatively, both real and fake Christmas trees can be taken to the reuse and recycling centre on Devon Street, off Old Kent Road.

A BERMONDSEY Under 9s football side is on the look-out for fresh talent after waving goodbye to a handful of players who’ve moved onto professional clubs.

Bruin JFC, whose players are mainly in school year 4, are looking for youngsters to compete in their Sunday matches as part of the SELKENT League.

Matches cost £6 per week to take part in but training, which takes place on a Saturday at Southwark Park at 10am, is free. “Obviously, money is a high priority for people so I’ve tried to keep the training free,” said Bruin coach, Peter Farrell, who’s been training the youngsters for three years. The seven-a-side team’s home ground is Shooters Hill but away matches can be anywhere around south east London and Kent.

Bruin are mainly looking to recruit players who are able to participate in the weekly Sunday matches but youngsters who can only train on a Saturday are also welcome.

Ancient clay used to make art

LONDON BRIDGE: Ancient clay laid below London Bridge Station millions of years ago has been dug up and used as part of an exhibition.

Inspired by the sight of a piling machine digging up earth at the London Bridge Thameslink redevelopment in 2015, Alison Cooke started a project using the clay spoil from what are now the foundations of the new station.

She approached Network Rail who gave her 360 kilograms of earth from 30 metres below the station which until then had lain untouched and unchanged for about 54 million years.

Batches of it were given to seven fellow members of the Associated Clay Workers’ Union (ACWU), who have used the clay to make objects that reference the history of London Bridge, structural elements of the rail network or objects discovered in the area during excavations.

The ceramic works will be on show to the public as part of The London Bridge Clay Project at Southwark Cathedral (The Link) from January 9 to February 5. The exhibition will be open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Hospitals get an extra £500k for Kent pilot scheme

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ Hospitals have had £500,000 to help fill a multi-million pound shortfall of cash to run its ‘Vanguard’ programme with hospitals in Kent.

The News reported in August that Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) piloted a programme which saw doctors treating patients locally in the Dartford and Gravesham areas, to save them coming to London.

It was then revealed in October that GSTT had requested £11.2m from NHS England to fund the Vanguard programme through 2016/17 financial year, but was only promised £2.5m.

Now, an update from GSTT has confirmed it will get £3m from NHS England, the body which funds specialist services across the country.

Sarah Morgan, director of organisational development at GSTT, said: “We are one of the few vanguards to receive more funding for next financial year than the current financial year.

“This is an absolute credit to the hard work of staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Dartford and Gravesham who have shown such enthusiasm for working together in this new partnership in order to improve care for our patients.”

Vascular, cardiology and children’s services will be included as services brought locally to Dartford and Gravesham by GSTT clinicians, as part of the Vanguard programme.

A spokesperson for GSTT previously told the News: “For example… Dartford and Gravesham is working with Evelina London Children’s Hospital – part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ – to bring specialist care closer to home for families.”

Gerard Sammon, deputy chief executive of Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, said: “[the funding] will allow us to continue to work with our partners at Guy’s and St Thomas’ to develop and improve the way we deliver care for patients.

“We are becoming increasingly able to offer sustainable local services supported by a level of clinical expertise not normally available to patients attending smaller hospitals.”

Judge refuses council request for a judicial review on previous government decision

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S bid to evict eight remaining leaseholders from Phase One of the Aylesbury Estate has been knocked back for a second time.

The Honourable Mr Justice Dove has refused the council’s application for a judicial review of the government’s decision to block it from making forced purchases of the leaseholders’ flats.

Making the compulsory purchase order (CPOs) of the eight leaseholders’ flats is vital for the council, as the far west section of the Aylesbury (Bradenham, Chartridge, Arklow and Chiltern) cannot be demolished until it is vacant.

Secretary of state Sajid Javid’s decision in September to block the council’s CPO – as advised by an independent planning inspector – was made on the grounds that leaseholders’ human rights would be “contravened” due to the financial burden it would cause.

In a letter sent to leaseholders on December 19, Judge Dove said the council’s grounds for applying for the judicial review of the CPO rejection were “unarguable” and that permission “must be refused”.

Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Mark Williams, said he was “hugely disappointed” by the judge’s decision.

But he said the council will now pursue an “oral hearing” to reiterate its case for a judicial review.

Should that fail, its last option would be to appeal against the judge’s decision in the High Court.

“This is not a decision we take lightly,” Cllr Williams said. “But our residents need new affordable homes, and the Secretary of State’s decision has huge ramifications for Southwark, and for councils across London that are trying to help tackle the housing crisis.

“On the Aylesbury alone, turning down our CPO means the secretary of state is jeopardising plans for 800 new homes, including hundreds at social rent as well as extra care homes for some of our most vulnerable residents. We can’t sit back and jeopardise this fantastic project, and that is why we have to challenge the decision.”

The most prominent argument Southwark made was that the inspector’s decision “was based on factually incorrect information,” because Mr Javid

had “ignored” updated evidence submitted during the 27-month inquiry.

Speaking after the CPO was rejected, Cllr Williams said: “We’ve put in place a range of options for the leaseholders that will enable them to stay in the area.”

The judge wrote saying he was “unimpressed” with these points. “I am unable to accept that the defendant failed to have regards to the claimant’s change in policy,” the judge said.

He said it was “unclear and unsubstantiated” that the inspector ignored the council’s updated evidence: that leaseholders could enter a sharedequity option in return for their compensation.

Southwark also believed that their updated offer of equity shares in homes nearby would therefore discount the inspector’s belief, that evicting the leaseholders would have caused them “economic, social and environmental dis-benefits”.

But the judge said the council failed to address the “impact on lease holders” because of the relatively low valuations they were being offered for their homes (all were below £300,000) The only alternatives for the leaseholders would be to “use savings” or “contemplate shared ownerships” “shared-equity arrangements”, or force them to leave the area “with the consequent social dislocation”.

The judge added: “The inspector and the defendant were entitled, if not obliged, to take account of the reality of the situation in relation to the economic impact on lease holders and there was no error of law in the defendant’s conclusion.”

He also said it was “intrusive” of the council to force leaseholders to go through “financial assessments” and disclose their savings.

Another of the inspector’s main criticisms of the CPO was that “a number of dwellings” in the proposed new blocks of flats would “fail to meet the council’s adopted standards for sunlight and daylight” – a point which the judge upheld. The judge said “there is no substance in the complaint of procedural unfairness” and that the council was given the chance to address these flaws in their plans for the new estate.

Southwark Council will now have to pay legal costs for making the failed application. The amount has yet to be decided by the court.

Family planning funeral for historian

SOUTHWARK: The late Southwark historian Stephen Humphrey’s family has told the News that funeral arrangements are being made.

Sixty-four-year-old Mr Humphrey was found dead at his home in Otto Street, Kennington on November 30.

A post-mortem concluded that he was killed by a cardiac arrest.

The funeral is being arranged by Stephen’s next of Kin: his nephew David Humphrey and David’s partner Jenny Powell, with Alfred Smith Funeral Directors in Great Suffolk Street, SE1.

A venue and date for the service have yet to be confirmed, but Ms Powell told the News they are hoping to find somewhere that can house up to 1,000 people for a date in January.

Following Mr Humphrey’s death, fellow historian John Beasley from Peckham called him “incredibly humble, knowledgeable and helpful”.

“I have known Stephen for 40 years. I wrote the first tribute to him in the book of condolences at the Local Studies Library,” John told the News.

“He knew more about the history of Southwark than anyone in the universe.

He was a mine of information.”

John added that it was also a “great loss” when Mr Humphrey retired from his job as archivist for the Local Studies Library in 2010.

Mr Humphrey was the author of books including Elephant & Castle: A History; Southwark, Bermondsey & Rotherhithe in Old Photographs; and Bermondsey & Rotherhithe Remembered. He was also president of Rotherhithe & Bermondsey Local History Society.

In 2012 he received the Freedom of the Borough of at the annual Civic Awards held at Southwark Cathedral.

Southwark Council leader Peter John paid tribute, calling him an “esteemed, prolific and influential local historian”.

Burglars hit Bermondsey social club 4 times in less than a year

CROOKS HAVE targeted a community-run social club in Bermondsey for a fourth time in ten months, leaving it in desperate need of added security.

Michael Hannon, chair of St Peter & The Guardian Angels Social Club in Paradise Street, said he was “devastated” when he found the club “smashed up” just days before Christmas.

Now the club – run voluntarily by Michael and his parents since 2001 – is appealing for help to raise £1,000, to pay for added security.

“I want a high-tech alarm, something that will notify emergency services when it goes off,” said Michael, 57.

“They are breaking in and it sets off our alarm, but it only goes off for an hour. Then they go back and take what they want. Our alarm at the moment is thirty years old.

“We have bricked up the windows and put up metal bars, but who knows what they must have used to pull them off the wall.”

The News reported the first break-in at the club in April, when money raised for the British Lung Foundation was taken just hours after a fundraising party. But it appears the venue shared by local friends and families had been plundered three more times. As well as vandalising the building in the latest break-in, the burglars also swiped bottles of alcohol.

bottle for them. It’s a hell of a lot of effort for a few hundred, but it’s the amount of damage they keep doing to the building,” Michael added.

“They’re getting in and smashing the place to smithereens. Now we need new plastering and new locks.

“It takes a lot to recover from. I don’t think we would survive another burglary.” Despite the break-in, the club opened as usual on Christmas morning for its older members to enjoy a pint, and hosted celebrations on New Year’s Eve. Police were informed of

THE SPIRIT of Christmas was alive and well in Rotherhithe at the Southwark People Care Association’s annual Christmas party.

The event, on Christmas Day, saw over 300 people, who would

otherwise spend the day alone, transported door-to-door from their homes to Bacon’s College and treated to a traditional Christmas dinner, entertainment, raffle prizes, and gifts.

The volunteer-run charity has been holding the party since before World

Artful Dodger was also the artist behind the mural of Muhammad Ali and pop legend Prince, emblazoned on the side of the GX Gallery in Denmark Hill, Camberwell. The cause of 60-year-old Fisher’s death came after she suffered a cardiac arrest on December 23.

TRAGIC, TEDIOUS and timeconsuming – that was how the roads and railways looked for Southwark residents last year.

The Elephant and Castle roundabout has been long-documented as an accident blackspot but the roundabout removal in December 2015 followed by two fatal collisions shortly afterwards imbibed fresh desperation among safety campaigners – yet TfL insisted their design is A-OK. Tragedy first struck on February 5, when 86-year-old Johanna Hedger was involved in a collision with a lorry on the junction between the roundabout and New Kent Road.

An air ambulance crew fought in vain to save the pensioner’s life but she was pronounced dead at the scene. MP Neil Coyle demanded Transport for London (TfL) review the safety of the roundabout following the incident but barely six weeks had elapsed before blood was spilled at the scene again.

A 20-year-old man, whose name was withheld by family, was killed on March 16 when two motorcycles collided at the junction with Newington Causeway.

He was airlifted to hospital but pronounced dead the same evening.

The second motorcyclist emerged

with only minor injuries and no arrests were made.

TfL maintained that all concerns have been responded to, whereas Mr Coyle voiced doubt to the News.

An inquest into the role of the crossing in the young man’s death will take place in February.

Traffic misery had a deceptive respite mid-year but come October it was back full throttle, with Tower Bridge closing to traffic for three months so that vital refurbishments could be undertaken.

Coinciding with the partial closure of Tooley Street, the closure meant that the already existing gridlock on Jamaica Road went from bad to worse, with one of Britain’s busiest roads screeching to an almost complete halt at times.

Residents, commuters and businesspeople felt the blow. Cabbies from Star Cars near Southwark Park claimed that they were losing money hand over fist, with driver Dennis Burns telling the News “Our wages have gone down since the closure because we can’t get anywhere!”

Just when it couldn’t possibly get any worse – TfL revealed twenty closures to Jamaica Road over 2017, as part of planned resurfacing works.

The latest news proved to be a step too far.

The public and political furore led to TfL cancelling the resurfacing plans

ELEPHANT & CASTLE: FEBRUARY and putting a smile on road users’ faces by installing three, permanent yellow box junctions along Jamaica Road in November.

Meanwhile, rail users had far from a comfortable ride throughout 2016.

While the year may have started well,

for many it descended into a summer of discontent as rail strikes and the introduction of emergency timetables across the Southern Rail network brought pandemonium to commuters.

Staff shortages led train operator,

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) to introduce an emergency timetable across its inner London services in July, leaving commuters from Dulwich, Peckham and Bermondsey stranded with no way to and from work.

NOVEMBER: A Millwall fan who raised £278,000 over seventeen years for the British Legion by selling homemade poppy badges was banned from selling them by the charity.

Sean McCarthy, who won a British Empire Medal for raising £65,000 for the Legion via his poppies last year, was ordered to sell the official badges instead.

BAKERLOO LINE: THE FUTURE

BERMONDSEY: OCTOBER The timetable saw up to 341 services cancelled across the network at times, with services packed out and commuters having to wait for up to an hour for their train home. Some commuters even complained of having to move jobs and house as a

result of the unreliable service.

The end of the year didn’t bring much of an improvement. The “winter of misery”, as dubbed by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, kept Southern commuters standing still on key Christmas dates.

However, there was a light which shone through 2016’s transport gloom – the announcement of a Bakerloo Line extension at Old Kent Road.

TfL plans to build two new stations on the road, with one at the top and one at the bottom and it is expected

that tunnelling will begin by 2022.

A ten-week public consultation, which will outline the plans of TfL bosses, will go out “early September.”

However, as was rather typical of transport issues in Southwark last year, not everyone was left with a

smile on their face.

The Bakerloo extension plans, which will see a total of four new stations, snubbed Camberwell, despite local residents showing overwhelming support for getting the tube in SE5.

WHEN NEIGHBOURS on a Borough estate reported strange smells to police coming from a flat, a truly gruesome murder awaited them - and it was one of their own.

Stefano Brizzi, murdered a policeman during a sex session at his flat off Southwark Street and was last month given a minimum-24-years behind bars.

The 50-year-old Breaking Bad fanatic acted out “satanic” fantasies, inspired by the hit TV series, and his addiction to crystal meth.

The victim, 59-year-old Gordon Semple, had been stationed with police in Westminster, and lived in Kent. He was reported missing on April 1 when the two hooked up after meeting on the dating app Grindr.

PC Semple was reported missing the next day by his partner, sparking a week-long man hunt.

On April 6 police found his dismembered remains in the communal bins of Brizzi’s flat at the Peabody Trust Estate in Southwark Street.

Forensic evidence showed the former Morgan Stanley web developer attempted to eat parts of PC Semple’s remains. A limb was also discovered on the banks of the Thames by a Bermondsey resident.

Nicholas Hilliard – the Recorder of London – said: “No sentence the court can pass can ever equate to the value of a precious human life and no sentence I can pass can begin to undo what

you have done.”

A statement from Mr Semple’s brother, Ronald, was read during the hearing.

“He was a well-thought-of and caring and

generous person and much loved brother,” it said.

“My family were devastated as news of Gordon’s murder was disclosed and still find it difficult to deal with.”

When police visited Brizzi’s flat on April 6, he answered the door dressed only in pink briefs and Aviator sunglasses.

A knife and four black candles were found under the bed when Brizzi’s home was searched, and a PDF of the Satanic Bible was found on his computer.

AUGUST: Sixteen-year-old Leoandro Osemeke, also known as rapper Showkey, was pronounced dead by paramedics in Colegrove Road, where a house party had been taking place on the evening of August 5.

A post-mortem examination found that he had been fatally wounded in his upper body.

A sixteen-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at the Old Bailey on October 26 charged with murder. A trial is set to begin on January 23.

Mr Osemeke was a celebrated recording artist and performer who attended Addey and Stanhope School in New Cross. He was due to receive GCSE results three weeks after his death.

Reginald Ofei-Berko

AUGUST: Reginald Ofei-Berko was found “unresponsive” in Penrose Street, Walworth, on August 25 with injuries to his upper body.

He was a local man, who police suggested had been sleeping rough. His next of kin – his grandmother – was said to be heartbroken by his death.

Reginald was last seen alive when he visited a Walworth Road pawn shop, only a few hours before paramedics found his body.

He died at King’s College Hospital shortly afterwards.

Five men, aged between nineteen and 44, have been charged with murder and are set to appear in court in February.

Police were called at about 9am on November 19 after witnesses rushed to Mr Kakay’s aid. He died later that afternoon in hospital due to a wound to his abdomen.

His brother Osman, who lived nearby in Nutt Street, said he had spoken to Mr Kakay on the phone the previous day, but had no idea he was in the area.

Mr Kakay was originally from Sierra Leone and came to the UK as an asylum seeker. He first looked for work in Birmingham, but recently moved to Bromley.

Detective chief inspector Cliff Lyons from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “It is believed Mohamed’s attacker was around the area of Wilson Road, Camberwell Grove and Camberwell Church Street, and the roads leading off from those main routes, between 9am and 9.30am on November 19.

“I am particularly appealing to anyone who was in the area between these times that may have been recording video footage from bike helmets, dashboard cameras or mobile phones.”

A 36-year-old man was arrested, but police later announced they had eliminated the man from their investigation. Enquiries continue.

Andrew Oteng-Owusu

AUGUST: A small community near Millwall’s Stadium felt the shattering loss of nineteen-yearold Andrew Oteng-Owusu on August 3.

Mr Oteng-Owusu, who seemed to be loved and known by everyone in the Lovelinch Estate, had dreamed of donating one of his kidneys to his ill mum, Tina Ababio.

The young lad had been a fortnight away from finding out his A-level results, and where he would be going to university.

It is believed by detectives in Lewisham that Mr Oteng-Owusu was slashed in his right leg, with his attacker’s blade splitting a vital artery. He mustered the strength to walk home, drenched in blood, and collapsed at his mother’s front door.

The teenager, who had recently graduated from St Thomas the Apostle College in Peckham, died at King’s College Hospital twelve hours later on August 4. A 50-year-old man was arrested in September, but was later released without charge.

Mr Oteng-Owusu’s grandmother – also named Tina – told the News: “We are not angry and we have reached a point where you realise that revenge and mourning will not make things better for Tina and will not bring Andrew back. We just hope [the attacker] will be brave, and come forward.”

MARCH: Southwark Council found itself in hot water when a high court judge ruled that for years it had been overcharging its council tenants for water bills Suddenly the authority had to

refund 48,000 past and present tenants between 2001 and 2013 with a total of £28.6m in rebates.

The court found in March that Southwark had acted illegally by charging tenants a higher administration fee than was permitted under the Water Resale Act 2006.

The ruling came following a Royal Courts of Justice dispute between Camberwell resident Kim Jones and the council, where it was found she’d been overcharged 22.1 per cent weekly on her bills since 2006.

Southwark is still in the process of tracking down current and former tenants to issue rebates.

SAMMY THE Spaniel had commuters panting for breath back in October after he fell down the gap between the train and the platform at Elephant and Castle rail station.

Passengers and station staff scrambled to pull Sammy up from the tracks, with professional photographer Damien Riben capturing the dramatic scenes on his phone.

“I was standing on the train when I heard loads of shouting and a high pitched scream.

“There was a girl on the ground. I thought initially she had fallen down, but she was looking through the gap trying to get Sammy.

Damien’s footage shows station staff leaning down to pull Sammy back to safety and into the arms of his relieved owner.

“He wasn’t hurt at all. He didn’t seem bothered,” said Duncan.

JUNE: From the fallout of the Brexit vote on June 23 came a chorus of calls from Labour politicians for leader Jeremy Corbyn to resign, under accusations he had lacked leadership in the remain campaign.

But with the overwhelming support of the party’s membership, Corbyn won again with an increased share of the vote (61.8 per cent). Tensions seem to have cooled within the party since.

New Mayor and assembly member

MAY: The former MP for Tooting won 58.6 per cent of the vote, for Mayor of London with a mandate to freeze travel fares and build thousands of new homes.

He has since rolled out a two-for-one bus fares policy, put dedicated police ward officers on the beat and is pushing ahead with plans for the Bakerloo Line extension. He has shown little interest in a review of the The Bend at Elephant and Castle.

With a new mayor, London also voted in a new set of Assembly members. The seat for Southwark and Lambeth was won by Labour’s Florence Eshalomi, after it was vacated by Val Shawcross (now deputy mayor for transport). Former Southwark councillor Caroline Pidgeon (Lib Dems) continued as an assembly member.

Bosch pulled the blanket off sleeping Noel Dalton as smoke filled his flat, alerting him to the fact that the three-storey building was ablaze.

Upon waking, Noel tried the front door but realised from the scalding temperature there was fire behind it. He made his way back to the bedroom and jumped out of the second-storey window, sustaining a dislocated shoulder as his only injury.

“He saved me, he really did. I want to make that clear. I would be dead if it wasn’t for him,” said Noel.

Cat killer on the prowl FEBRUARY

DULWICH FELL victim to a duo of gruesome cat killings in February, giving rise to fears that the Croydon Cat Killer was committing his “monstrous” acts in the area.

Of the feline casualties, one was a kitten found with his tail cut off and stomach split open and the other had been beheaded and “displayed” in a gruesome manner.

Following these mutilations, it emerged that a further two cats had been killed in a similar style in West Dulwich before Christmas.

The hallmarks of the killings linked them to the Croydon Kat Killer. .

OCTOBER: Two men did the milkround at Riverside Primary School, stealing 800 cartons of just-delivered milk from outside the school gates then making their getaway on pushbikes.

Bishop Climate, who oversees hundreds of churches across the globe, stated that sympathisers had approached him on the street during a recent trip to Africa and that the “wrath of God” was imminent for his critics.

The Inner London Crown Court upheld the church’s appeal against the fine a few weeks later..

A KIND-HEARTED News reader ensured that three-year-old Aimee Kemsley, who’s battled a rare form of Cancer most of her life, got her Christmas wish.

Bermondsey boy Phil Burkett arranged tickets to Peppa Pig World for Aimee and her dad, after reading in the News that a trip there would be her dream come true.

Aimee was diagnosed with soft-tissue cancer Rhabdomyosarcoma on Christmas day in 2014. She is now in remission and is starting to eat and walk normally, having spent an entire year bed-bound in St George’s and Royal Marsden hospitals.

The Kemsley family are still appealing via charity Dreams Come True to pay for John and Aimee’s transport and accommodation costs during ongoing check-ups.

Grief stricken but inspired AUGUST

AFTER THE tragic stillbirth of their daughter, a Dulwich couple took courage from their grief and embarked on a 2,000 mile bicycle ride from Vancouver to San Diego to raise money for stillbirth charity Stillbirth and Neonatal Deaths (SANDs)

The couple raised over £12,000 for the charity, on the journey which took them along the West Coast of the US. Andy cycled, while Michelle rode in a support vehicle alongside him all the way.

The couple were moved to take the journey when they were left devastated by the death of their baby Orla in May. Within days of returning home from hospital, the couple had set up a fundraising page for SANDs. The couple state that they received overwhelming support, with messages of encouragement and love pouring in from all over the world via social media.

“We’ve been touched by the kindness of strangers,” said Michelle.

MILLWALL FC spent most of 2016 with the existential threat of Lewisham Council forcibly buying land it uses for its café, car park and Lions Centre.

Senior councillors are due to meet on January 11 for a re-vote on whether to approve a compulsory purchase order (CPO) of the land, which Millwall leases from Lewisham.

If the CPO is approved, the council intends to sell the land to property developer, Renewal.

Renewal’s plans for the site (pictured above), as well as land it has secured around The Den, include 2,400 homes and redevelopment of South Bermondsey Railway Station But Millwall has been warned by the English Football League (EFL) that losing its Lions Centre could see the club stripped of its Youth Academy Category Two status.

This is because having Category Two status requires clubs to have 24-hour access to a football pitch, which Millwall would lose if it is forced to give up its training ground at the Lions Centre.

Relegation from Category Two would also mean the loss of £300,000 per year in grants from the EFL. Members of the Millwall Supporters Club told the News that nearly half the club’s starting eleven are players that have risen through its Youth Academy, therefore the CPO poses a serious threat to the club’s ability to find new talent.

Aylesbury knock back

Four of the eight Aylesbury leaseholders

AFTER 27 months, the government rejected Southwark Council’s bid to forcibly purchase leaseholders’ flats in Phase One of the Aylesbury Estate, saying it would “contravene their human rights”.

MP Vicky Foxcroft have both voiced their objections to the Labour-run council. A number of Lewisham’s ward councillors have also raised objections.

The government argued that Southwark needed to negotiate with the leaseholders, who would be priced out of the area with the small compensation (below £300,000) the council was offering.

Southwark’s plans to redevelop the entire estate will see 3,500 homes built in its place: 50 per cent of them at ‘affordable’ rates and 37.5 per

cent of the total at ‘social’ rent.

Housing campaigners say this will mean a net loss of nearly 1,000 social-rent homes.

There has been speculation that the government’s decision – to reject the council’s compulsory purchase order – could set a precedent: that all leaseholders be given better deals for their flats, with more done to help them stay in the area.

At the very least, this has proved a costly and timeconsuming setback for the council, which no one had seen coming.

NOVEMBER: The “fantastic educationalist” who touched the lives of thousands of youngsters as a teacher at Surrey Docks Farm passed away.

Daphne Ferrigan, who led community education at the farm between 1983-2003, died of an aortic dissection aged 64.

MARCH: A familiar face in Peckham Rye Park was lost, when daily dog walker Gary Clark passed away of cancer.

Tributes were paid to the Nunhead resident, who was well-known among local dog walkers and thought of as a friendly face. Greatly comforted in his final days by having a framed picture of his beloved English Bull Terrier Benson at his bedside. He died aged 53.

Sam King MBE JUNE: A trailblazer for London’s black community and Southwark’s first black mayor, passed away at St Christopher’s hospice aged 90-years-old.

Family and friends commemorated Jack for his positivity and tenacity. He was put to rest at Honor Oak Crematorium.

JULY: Close friends finally put a much-loved Bermondsey “gentle giant” to rest, two months after his death sparked a campaign to raise money for his funeral.

Meurig Gomer Wyn-Roberts, 53, known as Gomer, was cremated at Honor Oak on July 4 after a service was organised and attended by more than 30 of his friends.

The send-off came following months of uncertainty about what would happen to his body, after he was found dead above the Greyhound pub, Peckham in May, because no one could find his next of kin. Regularly dressing up as Santa for the kids in the Blue Market Square, Gomer did his little bit to be part of a community spirit many claim is disappearing.

DECEMBER: News broke of the sudden passing of the former Borough Archivist Stephen Humphrey.

Born near Elephant and Castle in 1952,he was well known for his extraordinary knowledge of local history, and worked for Southwark Council from January 1978 to June 2010, being awarded the Freedom of the Borough in May 2012.

He wrote eight books on the area, including Elephant and Castle: A History, and Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Remembered.

NOVEMBER: Family and old friends paid loving tributes to Tony Ritchie, the former leader of the council, who was also mayor of the borough from 1989 to 1990.

Mr Ritchie died in hospital on November 9, aged 71.

S PEOPLE go back to work after Christmas, they will be thinking they can’t face another year of Southern Rail travel chaos like the last one.

Throughout 2016 I have been inundated with emails from constituents who are desperately worried about the Southern Rail disruption and the effect this is having on their working & family lives, their childcare arrangements, their finances and safety from overcrowding. One woman told me she’d missed hospital appointments as a result, others tell me they’re constantly worried about how late they will be to pick up their children from school and nursery, or that they miss out on putting their kids to bed on weeknights.

Anyone who lives and works in South London will be well aware that Southern’s problems started well before the recent industrial action. Trains have been cancelled, late or dangerously overcrowded every week for the best part of two years, whether there are strikes scheduled or not.

It is typical that the Government blames the unions, but that won’t get people into work on time. The truth is that ministers are defending a failed franchise for political reasons when they should be sticking up for taxpayers and commuters.

It is bitterly disappointing that so far the Government has refused the proposed settlement to solve the problem and hand the franchise to Transport for London. It makes sense to have Southern Rail as part of London’s integrated transport system. TfL has a proven track record - on rail services that TfL has already taken over, delays are down and customer satisfaction – independently measured – is up. But the Government have put narrow partisanship ahead of commuters’ interests.

The ongoing chaos on Southern Rail services is a disgrace and fails commuters who just want to get into work and home to their families. It is not acceptable for Southern to say they ‘strongly advise people not to travel’ on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in a working week. For many that simply isn’t possible.

Passengers can’t continue to suffer like this.

That’s why I’ve urged the Government to strip Govia Thameslink of the franchise, written to the CEO of Govia about their inability to provide a reliable service, and on 13 July 2016 I spoke in the Govia Thameslink Rail service debate in the House of Commons.

I’ve also asked the Government to meet the unions urgently without any preconditions and before further strike action to explore how Govia Thameslink Rail can settle the dispute with the unions.

I will continue to work closely with my Labour colleagues Helen Hayes MP, Neil Coyle MP, Cllr Peter John and Florence Eshalomi AM to hold the Government to account on the Southern Rail misery and to push for an accelerated transfer of Govia Thameslink Greater London services to Transport for London.

Our elderly should come first

WHILE OUR own old people are in such need, it simply grotesque that we are spending £12 billion a year on foreign aid.

Much of it either squandered on going straight into the pockets of despots and their lackeys.

Remember back in 2013 when ministers gave us a categorical assurance that the elderly would never again have to sell their homes to pay for social care.

This was billed as a ‘universal’ scheme allowing everyone to defer costs until their deaths far from being open to all, the policy will apply only to those with savings of less than £23,200. As for the rest, they will have to pay upfront for their care, spending their life savings and giving up every advantage for which they have sacrificed so much during their working lives.

Inevitably, many will be left with too little to maintain their homes and will be forced to sell up.

Is it best to squander all your money when you’re young and don’t worry, the state will look after you in your old age?

But woe betide those who do the right thing, pay their taxes and national insurance and put something aside for their retirement. They’ll get nothing for their pains but more bills.

If more money is to be raised by increasing council tax to invest in better elderly care the government must stop squandering our cash on vanity projects and foreign aid.

The £1 billion spent on ‘foreign aid consultants’ is £1 billion not spent on training care home assistants to treat their elderly residents with dignity, rather than behaving inhumanly towards them.

There is no getting around the fact that looking after old people, especially the growing ranks of the 90-year-olds, is a very expensive business.

Britain is one of the most charitable nations on earth and will always continue to give both publicly and

privately. But charity should be given on the basis of need, not some arbitrary target.

And our own elderly and vulnerable should be at the very front of the queue.

One of the benchmarks of a civilised society is that it treats its elderly with dignity and guarantees they will be looked after when they can no longer look after themselves.

Actually, I believe we may have the law on our side, as when SLAM closed the A&E , parliament decreed they can only close it , if there is something in place at King’s which is ‘fit for purpose’. As we all know, this never happened.

Get psychiatrists to see sense

THE RECENT report that a mental health patient was in King’s A&E for 46 hours, because of a shortage of a specialist psychiatric unit, though shocking, is not the blame of the King’s A&E staff!

The fact that the once Maudsley A&E is just across the road and is empty, is what is really shocking.

We at Southwark Pensioners Action Group (Spag) know there are psychiatrists who agree with us, but cannot be named as they do not want to lose their jobs! It is the senior ones who hold the purse strings that refuse to see sense!

The A&E unit is empty but obviously needs staffing. We should be working together to make the Government provide funding for the mentally ill!

However, South London & Maudsley (SLAM) need to change some of their tactics. They are happy to say it is difficult because of the stigma that goes with mental health.

We at SPAG believe we should be promoting there is no shame in having a mental health problem. For those who are not aware stigma is the same as shame.

To combat stigma, King’s have a clinic for the elderly called the Betty Alexander. It is excellent.

The first thing you see on entering, is a large sign saying WELCOME. So the first thing I would do if they reopen the Maudsley, it to have a large sign overhead saying WELCOME.

THIS IMAGE is of my great grandmother Elizabeth Catherine Birch who lived at 70 & 72 East Surrey Grove in from 1930 until death in 1952.

I’m not sure if this image is Pre 1940. I just wondered if different architects added extras to the front. I am really trying to find this house.

I looked at the East Surrey Grove houses from the Blitz, but they looked very basic.

I believe the 1940 Bomb just missed 72 and hit 66. Also on the image are these flowers, veg grown under the windows. Are there any other images of buildings/houses of this design?

Any idea where this house is would be great. It seems many streets had different designs around Peckham.

FTER A cold snap at the beginning of December mild conditions arrived, bringing mist and grey skies – very typical for the time of year.

Cold weather usually sets in during January, however in recent years it has remained wet and mild, and so it is difficult to know what to expect.

With the shortest day now passed this is a good time to plan next season’s displays. It is not always possible to position plants in full sun but there are shrubs, annuals and bulbs which tolerate semi-shaded areas.

Shrubs such as Christmas box which produces tiny fragrant flowers at this time of year. Photinia (Red Robin) is an evergreen with glossy bright leaves but in spring new growth is vibrant red; used as a single specimen - or planted in groups it also makes an attractive hedge. Photinia can be pruned in spring or summer to keep it compact.

Spring flowering bulbs such as Star of Bethlehem, Scillia and the Trillium Wood Lily flourish under trees or in spaces between shrubs. Hostas are attractive perennial foliage plants and thrive in moist, shady areas. At this time of year they are dormant, with tightly curled buds on the surface of the soil; in spring these sturdy green tips rise and unfurl into beautiful shaped leaves in a range of colours (depending on the variety). Hostas have bell shaped flowers in summer, but are grown for their foliage - which is also loved by slugs and snails; suitable pest control is always needed. Hostas are available at garden centres from May onwards.

Some of the summer flowering perennials/annuals that tolerate semi shade are Campanula - recognisable by its blue or white bell shaped flowers; also Aquilegia (Columbine) which comes in a range of pastel shades and unusual shaped flowers (Aquilegia caerulea is especially attractive).

Lobelia erinus is happy growing in containers, borders or the rockery. Scented Nicotiana, a cottage garden favourite, can be started off from seed in February (inside); and will also happily grow in containers.

The winter garden is not without colour – bright berries adorn Skimmia, Holly and Cotoneaster. Witch hazel and winter Jasmine are in bloom; so too is Rosemary (months early) and some rose varieties; these two summer flowering shrubs are companions to the leafless trees and seasonal evergreens.

Much Ado About Nothing, though often very funny, has a more sombre tone containing as it does the villainous Don John (Sam Alexander) who conspires to prevent love’s labours being won. Rebecca Collingwood as Hero is a beautiful and touching pawn in this game and the audience breathes a sigh of relief when the marriage finally takes place, although not sure whether Claudio deserves her! More satisfying by half is the union of Beatrice and Benedick whose verbal sparring throughout the play has delighted and thrilled.

There is much comic business attached to the revealing of the villainy of Don John. Though this business was very cleverly staged, Nick Haverson’s Dogberry was overplayed. The character as written is funny enough; his misuse of the language should have been left to speak for itself without the tics and histrionics. Visual comedy also leaked into the main plot when Benedick hides behind the arras and is set up by his companions. Very funny.

But the music! Nigel Hess’s music was delivered by brilliant musicians under the direction of Bob Broad, mostly off and occasionally on stage – during the hilarious Cossack dance for example.

Music is used throughout, as Shakespeare intended to set the scene, heighten the emotions - and at time to mock them – and to underline the action.

And just to delight. Peter McGovern as Moth sang beautifully, as did Harry Waller as Balthazar and the choral delivered by the company in both plays worked very well.

To see two Shakespeare plays in one day could have been a daunting prospect.

The brilliance of these performances insured that the experience was a stimulating and exhilarating experience.

Great War. What hope then of return in a year?

The same set is revealed at the start of the second play, with its library transformed into a field hospital and the women, now dressed as nurses, awaiting a visit from soldiers returning from the war. Simon Higlett’s design is wonderfully flexible being by turns, the warm festive interior of the castle, the steeply gabled roof (complete with smoking chimney), the interior of a chapel decorated for Hero’s wedding and the entrance to the house with its park

and hunting grounds.

The cast, from whom Christopher Luscombe as director asks a great deal, are more than equal to the task of playing two separate roles in succeeding plays.

Edward Bennett as Berowne and Benedick is outstanding with the energy and command he brings to both roles. He is well matched by Lisa Dillon as Rosaline and Beatrice who handles both feisty ladies with consummate ease.

Both actors deliver the witty and biting lines with a lightness and sharpness that is very funny, and in this they are very

well supported by the rest of the cast.

During “Love’s Labour’s Lost”, whilst the courts of Navarre and France pursue their diplomatic and amorous intrigues, the locals, domestic staff and estate workers - and Don Armado, a Spanish traveller, hilariously played by John Hodgkinson - provide a wonderfully chaotic subplot. Steven Pacey brings Holofernes to comic life as the pedantic schoolmaster, Constable Dull (Chris McCalphy) is triumphantly dull and Nick Haverson as Costard is a joy. Vietnam comes to The Blue

There’s a new place to dine in The Blue and one where you can eat very well in the evening, which is something that has not been available in that part of Bermondsey for far too many years, leaving it pretty much a ghost town after dark, writes Michael Holland...

and already they have had returning customers, which is a good sign, and going by what I and Boy Burkett had I would bet that Le Tran will soon be having a packed restaurant on most evenings. Everything is cooked from fresh on the premises, no bought in and microwaved stuff here, and Cindy, the lady in charge, wants to make sure it stays that way.

I began with a Hanoi Beer, a Vietnamese light lager to refresh the palate and wake up the taste buds, while my companion had a Vietnamese Lemonade.

Very soon after my first sip the dishes began arriving. We had two ‘salt and pepper’ dishes - Soft Shell Crab and Squid - and both were delectable. The

batter on the squid was so crisp it balanced out nicely the texture of the seafood inside. They came with a spicy dip that set them off well. There was also a plate of Grilled Pork Dumpling, the pastry and pork was the perfect match, and these also went well with the dip.

Our hosts also brought us a Chicken Salad to try. The dressing of tamarind and fish sauce was exquisitely sweet.

Cindy came and told us about her plans and how she wants to help in the local community, as well as promote good Vietnamese food, something lacking in this part of town - until now.

Another dish landed, this time Vietnamese Spring Rolls. Again the freshly cooked crispiness put these above any Chinese versions of this classic starter. These were accompanied by a fish sauce and chilli dip that was spot on. We knew we were in danger of feasting too much on these excellent first dishes that we would be too overfed for the main event, so we planned to save some to take home and thereby leave room for the following courses.

And follow they did: Vietnamese Rice with Pork was a good dish, the pork marinated nicely before being grilled; Singapore Noodles, an old favourite done very well here; and Deep Fried Sea Bass with Lemon Grass. The fish was cooked beautifully but the stand out part of this for me was the sweet and sour sauce that it came with. Again tamarind gave that special tang when combined with the lemon grass. Oh how I wish I could replicate it at home.

I was ready to lie down for a few hours by now but Brother Burkett had a

determined look in his eyes and I knew he was going to fight his way through the remaining courses.

Dessert was supposed to be just dish one that we would share but Cindy wanted us to try a traditional Mango & Semolina Pudding from Vietnam. This was a rich, sweet, tangy dish of mouthtingling joy. Your teeth might fall out with this but you would not care.

Finally, Banana Fritters with Ice Cream. The fritters were stupendous.

Once more the crispiness of the batter before you reach the soft banana inside raised them above any others I have tried.

My compliments to the chef who doesn’t just cook well but ensures the food he sends out is very well presented; the dishes are as good to look at as they are to eat.

Ignore the bill total, we were given far much more than anyone would normally eat, and we left carrying home more than we had actually eaten in there, but Cindy wanted us to sample some of the highlights of her restaurant so gave us more and more.

Le Tran has already made a mark on me and I’m sure it will be making a mark on The Blue and the rest of Bermondsey before long.

A BUMPER crowd of 1,910 packed into Champion Hill Stadium on New Years’ Eve as Dulwich Hamlet took on Wingate and Finchley.

In the only changes from the victory at Grays Athletic, Gavin Rose gave a start to Charlton loanee Chris Millar and restored Ibra Sekajja to the starting eleven. Danny Carr and Ibrahim Kargbo dropped to the bench.

The atmosphere fell flat after just three minutes, as the visitors took the lead.

A Wingate corner failed to be cleared, which allowed Reece Beckles-Richards to slot the ball

home and open the scoring.

Millar and Dumebi-Dumaka had chances to level almost instantly but failed, however, in the 21st minute, Hamlet were back on terms.

A looping cross that took all the speed off of the ball was sent into the Finchley area and Dumebi-Dumaka, having to generate all the power himself, headed home for his second in consecutive games.

Efforts on goal were traded as both sides looked to move back in front, but right on half-time, the visitors were awarded a penalty, after Matt Drage was adjudged to have brought down Rob Laney.

Preston Edwards, however, was to play the part of hero, as he got down low to save Steve Wales’ spot-kick and keep the scores level.

On the hour mark, Hamlet had a penalty of their own to contend with, after substitute Danny Carr was tripped in the box.

Carr dusted himself down and took the kick, but his weak effort was saved.

Chances were at a premium in the second half otherwise, meaning that both teams had to settle for a draw to close out 2016.

of the first half, but went in at the break just the one goal to the good.

The relegation-threatened visitors attempted to get into the game as the second half begun, but Dulwich continued to pile on the pressure, missing a gilt-edged chance to double the lead through Tomlin.

The second goal did come, however, just past the hour mark.

A Carew free-kick was blocked by the Hendon wall, but the ball fell to Beaney, who thrashed a low shot past Lovelock, sending the majority of the 1,146 fans inside Champion Hill into raptures.

Hendon made life difficult for the home side, though, as hesitant defending allowed Reis Stanislaus the chance to thump a cross-shot past Preston Edwards and in off the far post via a deflection in the 71st minute to halve the deficit.

Hamlet, however, held on for the three points to move up to fourth position in the Ryman Premier League table.

DUMEBI-DUMAKA came back to haunt his old club over Christmas, as Dulwich Hamlet won 2-0 at struggling Grays Athletic.

Dumaka returned from injury to net on his former stomping ground, opening the scoring in the 51st minute, before Nyren Clunis added the gloss late on.

Dulwich were in control and almost took the lead after just three minutes, but nobody could convert Clunis’ cross.

The two goal-scorers combined just before the half hour mark, with Dumaka slotting in, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

that the two sides went in at the break goalless.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to nudge themselves ahead in the second half, however, as just six minutes in, the pressure finally told as Dumaka shrugged off his marker and fired home.

The chances kept on coming, most notably from the boot of Danny Carr, but the game wasn’t made safe until the final minute, when Clunis picked up on a loose ball and doubled the lead.

T

he popular Millwall Premier League Kicks programme ended 2016 with a celebration finale with an end of year Futsal tournament at Bells Gardens Community Centre ball court in Peckham.

The life changing community development programme, that takes place for 48 weeks of the year throughout Southwark and Lewisham for young people aged from 8 to 19, is delivered in a variety of different settings such as local ball courts, estates, youth clubs and leisure centres.

Football is the attraction but Millwall also recognise the importance to provide educational workshops, which may have a positive impact in the lives of local young people.

Last weekend provided an opportunity for local young people to showcase their footballing talent in a day packed out with fun and learning through an

organized futsal tournament and educational workshops delivered by inspirational speaker Paul Hannaford who kindly took time out of his weekend to visit Peckham in South London.

Paul Hannaford, an inspirational life speaker who shares his personal journey with up to 10,000 young people a year, delivered hard hitting messages to the groups of young people in attendance. Detailing his early years as a prolific offender, drug addict, and gang member, Paul used images, videos, and physical scars to show his life experiences to all in front of him.

Paul is a real life example of change, reinforcing his message across the country to thousands that a life of crime, drugs, and violence isn’t a positive or productive way to live your life.

He spoke with the group about his experiences that have made him the man he is today, along with his physical memories that

an earlier life of crime had inflicted upon him.

The futsal tournament involved three selected teams from the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme, with two teams coming from Cossall Park and Bells Gardens which are both based in Peckham and the third team coming from Goldsmiths Community Centre Ball Court in Lewisham. Local grassroots side, YFC Vista were also invited as special guests who have a focus on balancing Football and Futsal.

YFC Vista went on to win the tournament displaying all the key fundamentals of futsal, playing a swift passing game throughout the day.

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small-sided football game that is widely played across the world and is officially recognized by both UEFA and FIFA. The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high

pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game. Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development; players such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Kaka, Lionel Messi to name but a few of the South American legends all played and enjoyed Futsal. Futsal has also helped players on the European stage Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Xavi, Fabregas amongst many others have played Futsal to develop their skills.

The day was a huge success in which the young people enjoyed an engaging yet fun afternoon.

Millwall’s Kicks Community Development Officer Gary Otim commented: “The idea behind today was to celebrate another year of community development work in Southwark and Lewisham

through the Premier League Kicks programme. It’s been another great year and we thought with the holidays coming up it would be the perfect time for Paul to come down and to educate some of our young people on the potential dangers of crime and drugs. A massive thank you to Paul for dedicating time in his weekend.”

The Millwall Community Trust will continue to provide a wide range of weekly football sessions across the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham starting in the first week of January 2017, including a new weekly Futsal session every Tuesday evening from 6-7:30pm for 12-15 year olds at the Millwall Lions Centre.

IT WAS probably safe to conclude after about the sixth ball had disappeared over the top of one of the Kingsmeadow stands that this wasn’t going to go down as a classic.

That Shaun Williams, one of the better exponents of neat, technical football, was one of the players guilty of sending an errant punt out into the nearby streets told you all you needed to know about the quality of this game.

AFC Wimbledon’s little packed stadium and tight pitch create that kind of rushed, bustling atmosphere and players seem almost oversized between the white lines. That was even more emphasised in a contest between two sides possessing some physically imposing specimens.

It was like bumper cars most of the time, with a bunch of overexcited kids at the wheels. These two sides came crashing, banging and walloping into the New Year and it is just as well for Millwall they don’t have another league game until they go to the Valley to face Charlton again next week. They’ll have needed time to soothe the bumps and bruises after this one, with the pressure of accumulating every vital league point lifted for a tilt at AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup this weekend.

All the rush-hour sense of hustle and bustle made the two moments of real attacking quality Millwall produced in the first half stand out even more.

Aiden O’Brien’s goal, in the fifth minute, was notable for more than just being the first scored in the EFL in 2017. Neil Harris denied recently there was any interest in his attacker after Fulham were linked with a bid for him.

The fee mentioned was £750,000 but, if Charlton’s Ademola Lookman is worth £10million, then Millwall could be forgiven for collapsing in a fit of laughter if any club approaches them offering that relative pittance.

Typical of the game, the ball came to O’Brien when he was surrounded by a cluster of players 35 yards out. But a few delicate touches and he was free outside the box. There was only one thing on his mind, and the result was spectacular, a vicious, dipping shot that was straight at Shea but the goalkeeper couldn’t get his hand to the ball as it sped past him. It was O’Brien’s eleventh goal of another productive season.

Then there was Steve Morison’s finish to put his side 2-1 up in the 40th minute.

AFC Wimbledon’s defence was caught out by Jordan Archer’s long punt upfield. Paul Robinson got his positioning slightly wrong as he tussled with Lee Gregory, and he headed back towards his own goal. Morison was there and looked up to see Shea coming off his line before delicately lifting the

ball into the net to seemingly put Millwall in command.

That was the second time the Dons had been behind but their manager Neil Ardley has built a tough and resilient side noted for their ability to bounce back from situations that look lost.

They did it in the second leg of the League Two play-off semi-final last season, and more spectacularly against Curzon Ashton in the FA Cup in December when they came back from three goals down with ten minutes left to win 4-3.

Every time Millwall looked like they were getting the upper hand Ardley’s players slapped them back down again.

AFC Wimbledon possess two strikers that are the definitions of handfuls. Lyle Taylor’s movement unsettled Millwall, while his strike partner Tom Elliott’s power was evident, particularly when he collided with Byron Webster at one point in the first half to leave the Lions defender clutching his ribs and needing attention.

The Dons play a similar direct style to Millwall and kept probing, looking for spaces in wide areas with Taylor taking up awkward positions in the inside channels.

They got their first equaliser in the twelfth minute when Dean Parrett’s outswinging corner was met by centre-

back Darius Charles, and Taylor anticipated it to nod past Archer from six yards.

Ben Thompson – making his 50th Millwall appearance – tested Shea before the goalkeeper denied Lee Gregory from close range in the 30th minute. Moments later Morison met O’Brien’s cross from the left but the striker couldn’t direct his header on target. Then it was that familiar sequence that led to Millwall’s second goal, and Morison had his twelfth in 25 games this season.

The Dons again threatened early in the second half as Millwall’s defence enjoyed little respite. Their second equaliser of the afternoon was down to Taylor’s trickery on the right when he teased a couple of Lions defenders before sending a cross to the near post.

Then it was about Elliott’s bravery in getting down low to superbly head the ball home at the near post.

Neil Harris said afterwards he wasn’t happy with referee Nigel Miller’s performance, but Neal Ardley could have had legitimate complaints in the first half after Gregory caught Dons captain Barry Fuller late but got away with a warning from the official.

Miller was happy to let a lot go, which probably contributed to the robust state of the game. Millwall and

their 654 fans felt aggrieved when Robinson barely tried to conceal a clear foul on Webster in the area. In the act of doing it he inadvertently headed the ball towards his own goal and Shea, initially going the wrong way, had to readjust quickly to just about palm the ball off the line.

After a number of incidents involving Robinson, Lions captain Tony Craig sought out the official to point out the home side’s apparent indiscretions, but Miller still let go the obvious grappling in the penalty area at set-pieces.

If Shea impressed with that save Archer bettered it when he got down low to keep out Jake Reeves’ drive from inside the box after being unsighted. Towards the end there were a flurry of attacks and counter-attacks from both sides, but no one could match the quality of the earlier finishes.

Harris will be pleased with Millwall’s battling start to the year, but even with Shaun Hutchinson fit and finally looking like an important acquisition, there must still be concern that the side hasn’t kept a clean sheet away from home all season.

It would be timely to end that run against their south London rivals next Wednesday.

IT’S PROBABLY not the glamour tie Millwall fans had hoped for, but Lions boss Neil Harris is eyeing up an upset when Premier League AFC Bournemouth visit The Den in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

It may be the first time since Harris became Millwall manager that his side have been pitted against a side from the top tier, but Millwall and the Cherries are familiar with each other given they last met during the 2014-15 season when the Lions were relegated and Eddie Howe led his club to promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

The brilliance of the job Howe has done is highlighted by the fact that four of the back five that started in a 2-0 win at Millwall in December 2014 – Artur Boruc, Charlie Daniels, Steve Cook and Simon Francis – are regulars in their defence this season.

Howe could make changes to his first-choice league side. Harris said that though it will be hard to predict their line-up, his Millwall players will be prepared to counter Bournemouth’s fluid style.

Harris has named the same team for the last four games as his side claimed three wins and a draw. He has the option of freshening his side up by introducing the likes of Mahlon Romeo, Shane Ferguson or David Worrall as Millwall aim to knock Premier League opposition out of the FA Cup for the first time since they defeated Aston Villa in the fourth round in 2013.

beating. If we play well and get our tactics right, even if it’s a Premier League team in Bournemouth, we have a chance.

“You have to play to the best of your ability and never give up, whether you’re in the lead or losing.

You’ve got to concentrate and give it all you can. That’s all you can ask for.

“You don’t want to give them too much respect where you might back off a bit just because they are a Premier League team. It doesn’t matter to me that they are.

“Every game in itself is another game to get a ‘W’ in the column.

When you win you move on to the next one.”

Cummings has started the last four

league games after overcoming a knee injury that required surgery.

He made his first league start in eleven months in the win over Charlton before Christmas, but he didn’t put an extra pressure on himself before the south London derby.

“It was fine. For our fans and their fans it was a local derby so it was a big game,” he said.

“But for me it was just another game, I had to go out there and perform and help the team to get the victory.

“I feel fine, I’ve been looking after myself and getting my recovery right so I’m able to play in the next game and next game after that.

“There are two halves in the

season and games come thick and fast after Christmas. We’ve got to build on results and keep some consistency going.

“There are 46 games in a season and everyone is going to play a part.

Whenever someone does come in they’ve got to fill the position and do the best they can to get a result in that particular game.

“We’re in an okay position at the moment and the second half of seasons are usually good for us.

Hopefully we can produce like we did last year and get a top-six finish at least.

“Competition is good for everyone, it keeps the level up. You want to do your best to stay in the team.”

MILLWALL WINGER Paris Cowan-Hall continued his superb form on loan at Wycombe Wanderers with the winner in the Chairboys’ 2-1 victory over Newport County on Monday.

Cowan-Hall scored a brilliant 40-yard chip in the 80th minute to complete a comeback against League Two’s bottom side, a result that leaves Wycombe just five points off the automatic play-off spots.

Also in League Two, David Forde kept his tenth clean sheet of the season as Portsmouth beat Luton 1-0 at Fratton Park.

“The Christmas period was really important, everyone knew that, with a lot of games in quick succession.

“Thankfully we’ve got a fully fit squad now which is very important. This season we’ve had injuries here and there to big players but everyone’s fit at the moment at an important part of the season.

“It’s giving the gaffer some difficult decisions to make at the moment.

“With injuries the defence was changing every game, a player comes in and gets injured and has to go out. But as a professional you have to deal with that.

“We work with each other day-in, dayout, so it isn’t that difficult to form new partnerships. We’ve got a great bunch of lads here, everyone’s got each other’s

back and comes in here each day with a smile on their face.”

Millwall have won three and drawn one of their last four games to move from fourteenth place in the league table to ninth, just two points off the play-offs.

That run started with the win over Charlton before Christmas, a result Craig savoured.

He said: “It was a big win, it meant a lot to me and I think people could see that from the celebrations. At the end of the day, though, it was just another game. We enjoyed it that night and moved on to the next game, which was Swindon and another good result on Boxing Day. “Charlton is a great game, a derby against your local rivals that as a kid you want to be involved in and as a professional you want to play in. The atmosphere was absolutely brilliant that night, before kick-off with the music playing, it made the hairs on the back of

your neck stand up.”

Craig also feels the sacrifices made over the festive period paid off in the results they have got recently.

“We were fortunate that I could enjoy some quality time with my daughter on Christmas Day,” Craig said. “That was really nice. It’s one where you enjoy opening the presents but at the back of your mind you’re thinking about the game the next day.

“I had to go out and do some stuff on my own, do a run and stretch and get myself ready for the game. The older you get you’ve got to do these things, you have to keep yourself mobile.

Everyone did it, we had to take heartrate monitors and all the boys did it.

Everyone wants to stay in and enjoy the day but we’re professionals and we know what’s at stake.

“We have to sacrifice a little bit of time on that day but it was all well worth it after the result on Boxing Day.”

“I was unsighted and it took a few deflections as well but I was lucky I was in the right area and got a hand to it,” he said. “It was a reflex save. The boys dug in well and I was happy to contribute.

“We knew it was going to be that type of game, physical and a lot of long balls, that’s the way Wimbledon are. We prepared all week and we stood up to the test.

“The Christmas period is always a tough one with games coming thick and fast within a few days. If you’d offered us ten points out of twelve at the start of it we’d have taken it. We were lucky to have three home games and the fans behind us.

“But even at a small ground (at

Kingsmeadow) the away fans helped us towards the end. The boys have done well to get ten points in these games.

“Both seasons we’ve started slow and we’re on similar points to what we were on at the same stage last season.

“We’ve got a few players back from injury like (Shaun) Hutchinson so hopefully we can kick on.

“The boys were very disappointed in the dressing room after the game and that shows the form we’re in. We led twice and gave away two quite sloppy goals.

“But to come and get a draw and get ten points, we’re not too downhearted.”

Archer wasn’t surprised by O’Brien’s goal, even if strikes like that don’t always come off for the attacker. “In training he does it quite a bit and sometimes they go

into row Z. But it was nice to see it come off the underside of the crossbar, it’s something he’s capable of.”

Millwall have a break from league action as they welcome AFC Bournemouth to The Den this weekend in the third round of the FA Cup, but Archer insisted the real goal is to get promotion at the end of this season.

“The boys are all looking forward to it, a Premier League team in the FA Cup,” he said.

“But our main focus is to get back into the Championship. This is a one-off game and we can go and enjoy it.

Bournemouth will be the favourites but we’re not just going to lie down and let them get the win.

“We’re going to compete all game and everyone’s looking forward to it.”

Archer: Cup a nice distraction - but promotion the priority

MILLWALL GOALKEEPER Jordan Archer said the squad was disappointed with a 2-2 draw at AFC Wimbledon last Monday, but believes that shows the expectations they now have.

The Lions won three successive games at The Den over Christmas and Aiden O’Brien’s stunning long-range strike gave them the perfect start at Kingsmeadow.

The Dons equalised before Steve Morison put the away side ahead five minutes before the break, but Neal Ardley’s side battled back again to level in the second half.

MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Jed Wallace joining the club.

The Lions boss is interested in bringing Wolves’ Wallace back for a second spell at Millwall, and contact has been made with his

representatives.

Wolves are thought to be open to allowing Wallace to leave, but given Millwall already have David Worrall and Fred Onyedinma, Harris will have to convince the board on the acquisition of another winger.

“It’s important that we try to get the right players,” he said. “With a fully fit squad we are as competitive as anyone in the division, that’s for sure.

“Joe (Martin) and Sid (Nelson) missed the bench for the last few

games and it was hard for them.

But if I can improve my squad and the starting XI then I will do.

“People have had opportunities to impress but have dropped down places, and you need a little bit of impetus.

“If it happens in the next few days then fantastic, if we have to wait two weeks then we have to wait.

Sometimes you can plan and plan, but you have to wait for a player’s availability and that changes all the time because of injuries,

suspensions and opportunities at other clubs.

“Jed’s not our player. If he was available it’s fair to say we would be extremely interested.

“What I can say is Jed had a wonderful six or seven weeks with us and contributed fantastically well to team performances, and he really enjoyed being here.

“He’s a top player and if he’s not going to be able to get out on loan I’m sure he’ll be able to force his way back into the Wolves side.”

The Lions face the Cherries at The Den on Saturday for a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The two club’s fortunes crossed in 2014-15 as Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe led the club into the Premier League for the first time in their history, while Millwall were relegated to League One. Bournemouth were in the third tier as recently as 2012-13 and Howe still has several of the players that finished second to win promotion that season, including Simon Francis, Steve Cook, Charlie Daniels, Harry Arter and Marc Pugh.

Craig believes that League One experience could be important for their opponents at the weekend, but vowed the Lions would be “getting in their faces” as they try to cause an upset.

“Quite a few of their players have played League One football and they’ve gone up through the Championship and into the Premier League,” Craig said. “They’ve got lots of experience under their belts. Eddie Howe has managed in this league as well.

“What Bournemouth have done to go up through the leagues with the budget they’ve had is absolutely fantastic and just shows that what any club can be capable of.

“It also shows what a good manager Eddie Howe is and the quality of the group of players he’s got.

“But we won’t change for any side, we play at a high intensity and get around the pitch. We’ll be getting in their faces.”
