Help the Kirton family find Clara’s killer

T

O FIND your loved one brutally murdered is something that would haunt you for the rest of your life - but Brian Kirton doesn’t even know who killed his beloved mother. He and his family cannot put the nightmare to rest in any way until they get an answer to that appalling mystery.

Thirty years ago, Brian found his 86year-old mum lying in a pool of her blood. She had singlehandedly raised her children after her husband died from the effects of gas poisoning in 1949, living through two world wars only to be brutally murdered with the broken remnants of a beer bottle.

Last week we reported how police had made a renewed public appeal and offered a £20,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of Clara Kirton’s killer. On the back of that, they have now received two phone calls - but need to hear from anyone who thinks they may have relevant information.

This defenceless old lady was savagely and fatally attacked and her family have never been able to find any kind of peace, which would come from seeing her killer behind bars. Please help them if you know anything about this terrible crime. They deserve an answer and they deserve justice.

Right to prepare for Brexit impact

L

ONDON IS already feeling the first effects of the decision to quit the European Union, and at a local level, the council is right to appoint a Brexit officer who will try to manage the impact of our departure.

Stephen Douglass will look at how leaving the EU could impact on the local economy, as well as the legal status of the borough’s EU nationals. As Council Leader Peter John points out, in areas of industry such as construction, there is the real possibility that construction work forces could be affected, and we cannot walk into this unprepared.

Whatever your opinion about whether we should leave or stay, Brexit will mean huge changes at both a national and local level. We have two years during which we will all have to get to grips with this new reality – let’s not leave it until that period comes to an end before we start planning for life after the EU.

Vicar prepares for skydive to raise money for ‘crumbling’ church columns

A VICAR who’s afraid of heights will tuck in his cassock and jump from a plane in a few weeks’ time, as he bids to raise money for his church.

Rev Andrew Doyle will take part in a skydive at the end of the month in an attempt to raise £50,000 for Holy Trinity Church.

The 54-year-old, who has been a vicar at the Bryan Road church for almost twenty years, said he was not looking forward to the jump.

“I’m not very good with heights, so I’m not looking forward to it,” he said. “But we need to fundraise for our pillars which are crumbling a little bit.

“I think we came across the problem a year ago: we noticed there was some cracking and as we had some work going on in the hall a builder had a look at it and put a drill in to see how deep it goes and the drill just went straight the way through.

“Even though the architect plans show steel girders in the middle there aren’t any.

“We don’t know how many pillars are affected: there are at least three at the moment but it could be all eight.”

Rev Doyle said the church spent all of its savings and money from rentals less than a year ago on other building work, which cost £90,000.

He expects the pillar work to cost anywhere between £50,000 and £100,000.

The current Holy Trinity Church was built in 1959 after the original was destroyed during World War Two.

Rev Doyle said he believed the original church was the first church to be destroyed in at least London – if not beyond – during The Blitz.

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey were heavily bombarded by Luftwaffe planes during the conflict.

The parachute jump will take place at 7.15am on May 27 at GOskydive, Old Sarum Airfield, in Salisbury.

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to the 26-year-old father of four who was fatally stabbed in the centre of Peckham on Friday, April 28.

The victim was named in the media as Bilal Kargbo. He died at the scene after receiving two stab wounds to the arm and chest.

Police made two arrests on May 1.

Mr Kargbo, who lived in Borough, was pronounced dead at 3.51pm after collapsing in Blenheim Grove, a short walk from the phone shop where he worked. He was known as a musician in his birth country Sierra Leone, and recorded music under the name Billz with his partner Mohamed Sheriff.

Mr Sheriff wrote on Facebook: “I will never ever forget April 28, 3:51pm. The day I lost my brother…

“This can’t be true, this can’t be life, that can’t be my brother on the news. We had all these plans to change entertainment together, from the day we met we became brothers, shared the same ideas and believed in the same principles.

“I will keep the memories that we’ve had forever in my heart. You inspired me

to be the best when you were alive and now you have inspired me to turn to Allah fully.”

His family has not yet formally identified Mr Kargbo’s body.

Alim Komora, who had known Mr Kargbo since they attended Walworth Academy together, told the Evening Standard: “There is nothing bad that I can say about him.”

Crowds attended a candle-lit vigil held in Blenheim Grove on April 29. Livesey ward Councillor Michael Situ said: “Saddened me to attend yet another prayer vigil for a victim of knife crime.

We must continue to fight the scourge of knife crime in London.”

Two men were arrested on Monday as part of an investigation by Scotland Yard.

A 22-year-old man was being held in custody on suspicion of murder, and a 28year-old was arrested “on suspicion of assisting an offender”.

A Met Police spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that the 22-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder will remain in custody, as detectives applied to a senior magistrate for permission to hold him for 72 hours after his arrest, while their enquiries continue.

The 28-year-old was released on bail on

Wednesday morning to a date in early June.

On the day of the attack, an eyewitness who did not want to be named, told the News: “I couldn’t see them fighting but I could see bare people crowded around them. Loads of women came out of the salons. A lot of people were shouting.”

Mr Khan of Khan’s Bargains in Rye Lane said: “I didn’t see the actual fight, but I saw men from the car garage next to Bar Story were holding the boy after he was stabbed. He was holding the boy’s chest before the police came. The police came after a few minutes.”

Scotland Yard is continuing to appeal for witnesses. Detective chief inspector Dave Whellams said: "We believe the victim was involved in an altercation with another person prior to being stabbed. The incident drew a large crowd of onlookers and a number of members of the public were filming the incident on their phones.

"I am appealing directly to any witnesses - and in particular any of those people who have recorded footage - to contact police as soon as possible."

The Little Half – a relay event – will take place on the same day, as well as other events over different distances of The Big Half course for participants of all ages and abilities.

And there will also be the Big Half Festival, which will celebrate the capital’s diverse culture with food and music on offer throughout the day in Greenwich Park.

The half marathon aims to attract new people to running and become the first sports event to truly represent London’s diverse population with runners from a variety of socioeconomic groups, faiths, ages, and ethnicities taking part.

All 5,800 general entries for UK and overseas runners were filled within hours of the event announcement on April 28, soon followed by the 1,500 discounted borough entries, reserved for residents in the four host boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Lewisham and Greenwich.

A total of 7,500 places have been reserved for community groups from the four host boroughs who will be able to get entries at just £10 each through their local schools, faith institutions, sports groups and other community groups.

THE COUNCIL has appointed a Brexit officer to look at how leaving the EU would impact the local economy and the legal status of Southwark’s EU nationals.

The role was given to Stephen Douglass, who has been Southwark’s director of communities since 2015, and first joined the council in 1999.

Leader of the council Peter John told the News: “Brexit will impact in many ways on Southwark, and the work of the council, and it’s important we are alive to all emerging issues or opportunities.

“I have asked our director of communities to keep an eye on any developments that might impact on the local economy and the rights of EU nationals working and living in Southwark.

“As ever, our main concern is ensuring local people have every opportunity available to them, and that Southwark remains united despite our departure from the EU.” Cllr John had also recently commented that Brexit could pose a “big threat” to house building and regeneration in the borough.

Speaking

at an Overview and Scrutiny Meeting on April 19, he said it could mean losing 60,000 EU nationals from the capital’s construction work force.

“It makes me worry,” he said, “because there is a reliance on EU labour to provide our housing construction. There’s no evidence that if you remove it we could replace it sufficiently quickly.

“But we have a section of the work force [who are] set to retire in the next five years.

“There could be a perfect storm in a few years, because even if you’ve got the money, you’ve not got the skills, which is just exacerbating an existing threat. Even before Brexit people were thinking ‘what are we going to do when these people retire’?

“I think in terms of Southwark as a borough, the challenges are greater than the opportunities, and it seems like a high price to pay.

“To kick someone out just to give someone local a job, I don’t think that’s how we would like to see our employment problems resolved.

“To be realistic there are real challenges, and that’s beside the social impact of us all having neighbours, friends and colleagues who are EU nationals.”

New half marathon to pass through borough

THE ORGANISERS of the London Marathon will host a new half marathon next year, which will pass through Southwark.

The Big Half, created by London Marathon Events Ltd, in partnership with Sported, will take place for the first time on Sunday, March 4, 2018, it was announced last week.

The Big Half 13.1-mile route will begin at Tower Bridge and finish in Greenwich, passing through the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham and Greenwich.

MILLWALL HAS signed a delighted seven-year-old on a two-year contract for its Youth Academy.

Young Kyliane Kasson had already scored two goals in his opening match with Millwall on Saturday, April 22.

He was spotted during try-outs by scouts from Charlton and West Ham who were also eyeing him up. But it was the Deptford lad’s local team who got the lion’s share by signing him first.

Having trained with YFC Vista since he was five-years-old, he has now become the third youngster to john the Millwall FC Academy since it launched in 2013.

Kyliane’s dad Gerrard Kasson told the News he was “so proud and happy” with his little boy.

“It’s taken hard work from everyone, including the family and his coaches at Vista.

“On the day he was spotted, the guys from Millwall came over and said ‘your boy is really good and we want to work with him’.”

Gerrard, who moved to London from France seventeen years ago, said he had always played football as a child, as did his brothers-in-law. He said Kyliane’s mum was very athletic and very good at gymnastics.

The newly-signed lion will now face a trying regime of training on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings, as well as matches on Saturdays and Sundays.

Gerrard added: “he scored two goals in his first match. He’s midfield, but he could play anywhere on the pitch.

At that age they play kids everywhere and he’s very confident.”

The proud dad said it was “too early” for his son to understand the significance of the move, but that he loves getting to play.

“It’s been great to see the results of all the training he’s done with Vista – thanks to all the coaches and

volunteers for your support. Kyliane will always remain a VISTA boy,” he said.

Shane Glasgow, director of Youth and Community Football Development at YFC Vista, said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled for Kyliane on his fantastic achievement which is very much deserved. Kyliane has been with Vista since he began playing at five-years-old and since then he has trained consistently to a remarkably high standard.”

A Millwall spokesman said: "A lot of hard work goes on behind-thescenes to attract some of the best young players from the local area to Millwall.

"In recent years, and especially under Neil Harris, there has been a clear pathway for players making their way through the Academy to the first team. Youngsters know that they will be given opportunities providing they apply themselves in the correct manner at all times.

"That makes Millwall a very attractive club for any young player in our area and it's exciting to see the progression of those continuing to make their way through the ranks."

A “BUSINESS case” for reopening Camberwell’s old railway station, produced by Transport for London, is due to be published in June.

It is the first solid indication that authorities are working together on the long-touted proposals.

A joint effort from politicians and local campaigners has seen an online petition reach nearly 1,000 signatures, calling for the revival of the 101-year-old, fourplatform station that once ran between Herne Hill and Farringdon.

Network Rail in March published a report ‘South East Route: Kent Area Route Study, draft for consultation’, which said: “TfL is now leading a review of the business case for the new station, including an analysis of the expected level of demand.

“Southwark Council are supporting the process by identifying the capacity for additional development in the station’s catchment area (covering both housing and employment) that would improve the viability of the station.

“Network Rail is working with TfL and Southwark council on the business case analysis and associated timetable modelling which is expected to be commissioned once the initial business case has been completed.”

It continues to say that the old station’s platforms were only designed for eightcoach trains, and would need to be extended to cater twelve-coach trains used

today. The petition to reopen the station was started by Sophy Tayler, founder of Priority Action for Camberwell Transport (PACT). Sophy said: “I personally would love to have more transport options here.

I have had traffic accidents and I’m put off cycling, so it would be nice.

“When we saw the Bakerloo Line opportunity a couple of years back, and the potential for a tube station, we wanted to make sure TfL recognised the need in our particular area.

“So it was disappointing that it was chosen to go down the Old Kent Road, where there was more development opportunity. But TfL said they would look at making a business case for reopening Camberwell Station as a consolation.”

Studies with King’s College Hospital, which receives over one million visits per year, and Maudsley Hospital, also showed a need to help staff, patients and visitors get better access.

Compared to the average person in London, visitors to King’s were “more than twice as likely to be disabled” and “nearly three times more likely to be 60 years with associated frailties”. Eighty per cent of survey respondents said their poor experiences of travelling to the hospital “acts as a deterrent” to them visiting.

Kieron Williams, Labour councillor for Camberwell Green, said that TfL “had been very positive” on pushing the case along.

“Camberwell has fantastic bus services but we also have very over-congested roads, and we need to be able to get people into the jobs market in areas south of the borough and in the city centre,” Cllr Williams said.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “Camberwell is poorly served by quick public transport links into central London and beyond, which is why we strongly support the re-opening of Camberwell station. We are working with local residents to make the case to government and Network Rail that this station must be re-opened. This is also backed up by our own work to increase housing and job opportunities in and around the Camberwell area.”

Local MPs Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman have also been banging the drum for Camberwell Station’s return.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman on April 24 asked the government “what plans he has to re-open Camberwell Station on the Thameslink Line”, and was told by junior minister MP Paul Maynard that the government “will support proposals for new stations where these are commercially and operationally viable”.

Matthew Yates, TfL’s Head of Transport Planning and Projects, said: “We are working with Southwark Council and Network Rail to produce a business case looking at reopening the Camberwell Thameslink station. One of the key things we need to assess is future public transport needs and demand to determine if the project should be taken forward. We anticipate the business case will be complete in mid-June.”

Bermondsey girl Maud celebrates 100th!

A BERMONDSEY dressmaker, who lost her husband during the war, has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Maud Smith marked the occasion with loved ones during a party at Bluegrove House care home, in Southwark Park Road, on Tuesday (May 2).

The centenarian has fond memories of growing up in Bermondsey, before she married and moved to East Dulwich.

“I love swimming and I used to swim

in the open air pool in Southwark Park,” she said. “My doctor was Alfred Salter; I remember he always kissed the children goodbye on the forehead.”

Maud has one child, David, and two grandchildren, who all visited her on her birthday. “I only have one son because my husband was killed before my son was one year old,” she said.

“I was only married for three years when my husband, who was a glider pilot, lost his life during the war.”

Maud said her secret to longevity was to “keep yourself clean, eat sensibly, and treat others as you would like to be treated”.

Man appears in court after dog walker attacked

THE MAN accused of stabbing a dog walker in Dulwich Park last week will submit a plea at Inner London Crown Court on May 30.

Jermaine McDonald, 26, of no fixed abode, appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on May 2, having been arrested in connection with the attack on a 31-year-old man on

April 27.

He will face five charges: of GBH, robbery, attempted robbery, threatening behaviour with an offensive weapon in a public place, and of failing to surrender.

Police have said the victim – who received a stab wound in his head – remains in a “critical condition” at a south London hospital.

Police and Air Ambulance were called to the park at about 1:03pm.

Free compost bin giveaway SOUTHWARK: Free compost bins will be given away by Southwarkbased recycling firm Veolia.

Five bins will be given away every day for the week of May 8-14.

MILLWALL FAN Antony Murphy, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a match which left him ‘dead for nine minutes’, has sadly relapsed.

The 40-year-old, originally from Bermondsey but living in Kent, was rushed to hospital and put in a medically induced coma after he had a cardiac arrest at Millwall’s clash with Northampton at the Den on Friday, April 14.

Last week, Antony seemed to be making progress after waking up and opening his eyes, but on Tuesday,

May 2, his friend John Kendall said his eyes were closed again.

“He is out of ICU and there is a possibility he could still be alright but the doctors aren’t holding out for it,” said John, 52.

“His eyes are shut again. He still has the breathing tube in his throat and he hasn’t woken up.

“He has got brain damage and they [the doctors] don’t know how badly but it is bad; they’re just waiting to see if he wakes up.”

John, along with five other friends, have been raising money to help Antony, who is a full-time carer to his father.

Antony’s dad, who has a heart condition, was taken to hospital after hearing the news about his son but John said he had since been moved

to a rehabilitation centre.

The group have already managed to raise almost £6,000 through generous donations.

“Last Saturday we raised £1,928 at the match,” said John.

“Northampton Town coaches, which picks up the fans, raised £250, Northampton raised £200, and their fans gave us another £300-400.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by how much has been donated and it was still coming through last night [Monday].

“The chief executive of Millwall, Steve Kavanagh, has also been in touch asking how Antony is.”

Over 5,000 people write to council over Peckhamplex

MORE THAN 5,000 people have written to the council on its proposals to redevelop the Peckhamplex cinema and carpark.

The council’s public consultation on its draft New Southwark Plan, which included the controversial proposals, ended on April 28.

Community group Peckham Vision led calls for residents to respond to the consultation using an automated emailing service on its website. The group’s coordinator Eileen Conn has now said over 5,000 people responded via the website alone.

Eileen told the News: “On a shoestring budget a small group of active citizens have enabled over 5,000 to get a voice on a complicated planning policy matter.”

In her own comments, Eileen wrote that more work should be done to explore how the building could continue to be reused in future. She said: “Over the last ten years this building and site have contributed to the development of Peckham as a centre of culture and creativity… The uses and future uses of the existing building have shown that it may be capable of significant long-term use

as a repurposed building.”

Last month, Peckhamplex’s chairman John Reiss said the company would demand an “affordable” new premises in the centre of Peckham if redevelopment went ahead.

The Peckham Levels project to house small businesses in the carpark is due to open in September on a sixyear lease. The council could look to submit a planning application after this period.

Camberwell man posted videos online and had ISIS images on laptop

A 22-year-old man from Camberwell has been banged up with a four-year jail sentence for terrorism offences.

Akeem Samuels was arrested on suspicion of encouraging terrorism on August 18 last year after posting extremist content on social media in breach of Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

The postings included a video of a gloved hand holding a knife and machete making stabbing motions.

During a raid on his home address near Camberwell Green, officers

found a machete and gloves that featured in the online video.

They also seized phones and laptops that contained ISIS images and videos copied and edited by Samuels before he posted them online.

Detectives discovered numerous twitter accounts encouraging and supporting ISIS which were attributed to Samuels. All the postings were subsequently removed and accounts closed down.

On November 9, Samuels was charged with seven offences contrary to the Terrorism Act, and two charges contrary to section

29C Public Order Act 1986, and remanded in custody.

Samuels appeared at the Old Bailey on March 23 via video-link, and pleaded guilty to the nine charges. He was then remanded for sentencing on April 28, when he was jailed for a total of four years.

After the Old Bailey hearing,

THE SON of an elderly grandmother who was brutally murdered at her Borough flat 30 years ago says he still lives in hope of her killer being caught.

Last week, the News reported that the police had received two phone calls after a renewed public appeal and the offer of a £20,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of Clara Kirton’s killer.

Brian Kirton, now 74, discovered his elderly mother’s body when he visited her flat at Victoria Buildings, in Great Suffolk Street, at 8am on Sunday, November 17, 1985.

Mr Kirton, who still lives nearby, had popped round with his mother’s paper and milk when he made the horrific discovery.

The 86-year-old grandmother had a number of wounds to her face and her throat had been slashed.

A post-mortem examination later found she died from inhalation of blood and crush injuries to her face and neck.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Mr Kirton told the News this week.

“I screamed out. They had ransacked

her bedroom, pulled out any cupboards she had in the front room and there she was lying on the floor in the front room.

“There was blood everywhere: on the doors, on the ceiling.

“I went to my sister’s which isn’t too far

away and told her and her husband came.

He put a handkerchief over the phone and phoned the police from my mother’s flat.”

Mrs Kirton was pronounced dead at the scene at 10am.

Despite the fact Mrs Kirton had £700 in her ground-floor flat, the only thing stolen was her red purse which was never found.

There was no sign of forced entry, but Mr Kirton said his mother used to leave a

“My mother was everything to me. My father died from the effects of gas poisoning from World War One in 1949 when I was six, so she was my mother and my dad.

“She was a wonderful woman. She was happy-go-lucky even though she had a lot of illnesses.

“She loved her family get togethers like weddings.”

Revised Canada Water plans to go on show ROTHERHITHE

REVISED PLANS for a new town centre and high street in Canada Water are set to go on show to the public this week.

Developers British Land will share its revised Canada Water Masterplan and ask for feedback at public exhibitions throughout May. Consultation originally began in early 2014 looking solely at the SE16 Printworks site but has since expanded to include a much wider area.

The masterplan is expected to deliver a new town centre with mixed-use developments and a high street connecting Surrey Quays and Canada Water stations.

It covers a 46-acre site incorporating Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, the SE16 Printworks, Surrey Quays Leisure Park, the dock manager’s office and 1 – 14 Dock Offices.

There is expected to be about two million sq ft of office and workspace, up to 3,500 new homes and about one million sq ft of retail, leisure,

entertainment and community space set in a network of streets and spaces connected to the wider area.

Since the previous masterplan consultation in February 2016, Roger Madelin CBE has joined British Land

as head of the development.

The project team has reviewed the masterplan in response to the previous consultation and has considered alternative approaches and developed a deeper understanding of some of the key issues.

The masterplan would be built in several phases over the course of about fifteen years.

Mrs Kirton was born in the area and had 26 grandchildren, three sons and two daughters – although her eldest son had passed away before she died.

She had worked at a printers in Westminster Bridge Road before becoming a cleaner later in life.

She was frail, in the early stages of dementia and suffered diabetes. She was virtually housebound, leaving her flat only twice a week to visit a local community centre.

Mr Kirton said he still thought about what happened every single day.

“Every day without fail it’s on my mind,” said the pensioner, who worked for the Financial Times for 21 years and also worked for The Guardian and Daily Mirror before he retired.

“I open my eyes, it’s there – and I close my eyes and it’s there. I used to have terrible nightmares.

“When people say time heals, it doesn’t.

I just get through it.

“My wife helped me get through it and my best friend. Without them I doubt if I could’ve got through it.

“I live in hope.”

Death of man at East Dulwich home ‘unexplained’ POLICE ARE treating the death of a 41-year-old man, who was found dead at this home in East Dulwich on Friday April 28, as ‘unexplained’.

The Met confirmed that police officers forced entry into the man’s house in Goodrich Road, by the junction with Donkey Alley.

Officers were called at 12:23pm “following concerns for the welfare” of the man, raised by neighbours.

He was found unresponsive and the London Ambulance Service was called. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene at 1:20pm.

Neighbours who spoke to the News described him as “quiet” and private”. One said he “kept himself to himself”.

Formal identification and a postmortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

The death is being treated as unexplained, and the coroner has been notified.

Candidates in June election face questions at meeting

THE FIRST election head-tohead between Simon Hughes and Neil Coyle has framed the battle for Bermondsey and Old Southwark as a two-horse race between Labour and the Lib Dems.

The two took part in a Q&A organised by the Trinity Newington T&RA on April 27, held at the Henry Wood Hall in Trinity Church Square, SE1.

Simon (Lib Dems) and Neil (Labour) were given a couple of minutes to make their opening pitch to the 100 or so before them. Then it was over to the local residents, who fired off questions on everything from safeguarding EU nationals’ rights to congestion troubles linked to the Elephant and Castle junction redesign.

One thing that became clear was that a constituency as varied and diverse as Bermondsey and Old Southwark (BOS) will prove a tougher-than-average case load for any parliamentary hopeful. But both candidates had no shortage of

Herne Hill bakery damaged by fire

HERNE HILL: An artisan bakery in Herne Hill was damaged by a fire in the early hours of Thursday, April 27.

Bel Ore Artisan Bakehouse in Milkwood Road was attended to by four fire engines and 21 firefighters.

Part of the bakery was damaged by fire, the London Fire Brigade has said.

The Brigade was called at 3:35am, and the fire was under control by 4:52am. Fire crews from Brixton and West Norwood fire stations attended.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Warning over electric heaters

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: Firefighters are urging people to be careful using electric heaters after a blaze in a block of flats in Bath Terrace.

Two people escaped the building after a fire alarm went off, and two more people evacuated a neighbouring property. Part of a bedroom in the fiveroomed, second floor flat was damaged by the fire. Smoke damaged the rest of it, leaving it uninhabitable, the Fire Brigade has said. The blaze, on Friday, April 28, was accidental, with the cause thought to have been an electrical heater being covered with bedding. The brigade was called at 7.47pm and the fire was under control by 8.27pm.

THE MET Police borough commander of Southwark has spoken to the News, after data released last month showed many types of violent crime were on the rise.

Detective superintendent Simon Messinger firstly addressed new knife and gun-crime figures, which showed incidents of both kinds had increased in the year 2016-17 compared to 2015-16.

Southwark also had the lowest conviction rates for knife-crime of any London borough, with 15.4 per cent of cases ending successfully.

He said “reluctance” of victims to report incidents to police was a barrier to resolving crimes, and that failure to do so could lead to further acts of violence being committed in retaliation. “A suspect one week may

be a victim the next,” he said.

“A considerable amount of work continues to be done to get people to give evidence. This is a far wider issue and there is sustained support in the effort to understand why people feel the need to carry knives and use them. This is a social issue that is not confined to Southwark or even London.

“We will continue to work with the local authority, partner agencies, voluntary sector and the community to address violent crime.

“Naturally, any reactive investigation will be considerably more difficult if the victim and witnesses are unwilling to engage with police… We continue to work in an effort to safeguard victims.”

But he said social media had become an increasingly popular way of giving evidence, and that Facebook Messenger could soon become available. “We want to make sure we are as easy to contact as possible,” he said.

Following “positive feedback” on the Met’s roll out of Twitter accounts given to each area’s dedicated ward officers, the Met is now “looking into” giving control of Facebook Messenger to 101 call centres.

A positive piece of news to come from the Met’s crime data release last month was the reduced number of reported drug offences, which fell by 10.7 per cent while conviction rates rose by 0.1 per cent. And as a subcategory, drug-trafficking fell by nineteen per cent.

This, DS Messinger believed, was down to education with young people, and because a higher proportion of the drug crimes reported were repeatoffences, which therefore warranted custodial sentences. He said the conviction rates could also be down to more new legal-highs legislation giving officers “more powers” to deal with drug offences.

Mr Messinger spoke of how other types of crime had been stemmed by his requests for specialist resources from the Met’s Central Command.

He said “very regular applications” have been made for “corporate assets”, such as Road and Transport Command buses, dogs units, and Territorial Support group (used to break up publicorder incidents such as riots or violent crowds).

“Such resources are highly sought after. On each occasion that Southwark has been provide with pan London assets, there has been a positive impact. The crime type being tackled has reduced for the given period.”

BERMONDSEY STREET Area Partnership will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a birthday event and a ‘then and now’ photo competition.

The voluntary group is asking for people to submit pictures of Bermondsey Street as it was 25 years ago and a picture of a favourite place/building/item of interest as it is today for a photo competition.

Shortlisted photos will appear in an exhibition at the birthday event on June 17 and prizes will be awarded for the best three photos from 25 years ago and the best three from present day. Michael Davis, chair of

BSAP, will head up the panel of judges, and Norman Ackroyd RA, Andrew Logan and Dame Zandra Rhodes will also be among the judges. The event will take place at Bermondsey Village Hall in Leathermarket Gardens on Saturday, June 17. The exhibition will be on

previous year. Of these, 2,122 households spent more than six weeks in temporary accommodation.

On its website Southwark Council admits people may need to stay in temporary accommodation for over a year due to the shortage of social housing.

Councils have a duty to provide housing for those faced with losing their home who are “priority need”, including families, pregnant women, and vulnerable individuals.

People may be placed in temporary accommodation whilst a homelessness application is processed or until more suitable housing becomes available.

Housing may be run by the council or a private landlord and could be a flat, hostel or bed and breakfast.

However, a shortage of affordable housing means Southwark Council is increasingly being forced to use expensive B&Bs to meet demand.

Over £9m of council spending on temporary accommodation last year was on B&Bs. Government guidance states councils should avoid using B&Bs except in an emergency, when people should be moved to more suitable housing as soon as possible.

It stresses B&Bs are unsuitable for families as they often have shared facilities and limited space. By law they should not be placed there for more than six weeks. However, at the end of 2016, 165 families were living in B&Bs provided by Southwark Council for over the sixweek limit.

A shortage of affordable housing is forcing Southwark Council to look further afield to meet demand.

Over 1,000 households were placed in temporary accommodation outside the borough last year.

Most are housed in London however, some were moved as far

away as Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

Elizabeth Wyatt, a member of campaign group Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL), said: “These families have already endured the terrible experience of homelessness, but their nightmare continues with unsuitable temporary accommodation which impacts every aspect of their lives.

“At our last meeting one woman was in tears because of the stresses her family are facing in temporary accommodation in Mitcham. Her children’s long journey to school is negatively impacting on their education and well-being and the mother was struggling to attend her college classes as well.”

HASL said another case involved a family being moved to Croydon, with their young daughter facing a three hour round-trip to school. The girl was unable to attend weekend

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL spent over £10m on temporary accommodation for people threatened with homelessness last year.

The increasing numbers facing homelessness combined with a shortage of affordable housing means the cost of temporary accommodation has been steadily growing.

Council spending on temporary accommodation is now five times more than it was in 2011/12, figures released through a freedom of information request show.

The council placed 3,407 households in temporary accommodation in 2015/16, an increase of eighteen per cent on the

lessons in Spanish, which is spoken by her family, whilst her mother faced a longer and more expensive commute to work.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We’re seeing a real shortage in supply of affordable temporary accommodation and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find any places in Southwark.

“This is why, long term, we hope to reduce then cease to use B&B and private hostels and find more suitable temporary homes just outside the borough.”

She added: “However, we will provide a full support package to reduce disruption to people’s lives and will not be discharging our responsibility – we will be welcoming people back into the borough when we find a suitable permanent home.”

Dad has bike stolen weeks before charity cycle

AN ELEPHANT and Castle dad is asking the public to keep an eye open for his stolen bike which he needs for a sponsored ride.

Peter Baffoe, 33, is due to take on a gruelling 200-mile sponsored bike ride at the end of the month to raise money for a new minibus for South London Mission.

In preparation, he asked his wife Winnie to put his limited edition blue and black Carrera Zelos road bike up for sale on online while he was away for a few days, so that he could buy a mountain bike with the money.

But before the father-of-three returned home to his family in Elephant and Castle, the bike was stolen from his mother’s back garden nearby, and he is now faced with the possibility of not being able to complete the sponsored ride.

“I took a photo of the bike and put it up for sale on April 16,” explained Winnie, 34.

“On April 19 someone contacted me with an offer and asked if they could collect it that day so I accepted the offer but they didn’t confirm at all.” The next

day she was contacted by the online sales site to say this person had cancelled.

“It was only on my husband’s return when we went round to get the bike from my mother in law’s [on April 24] that we realised the bike was gone.

“His brother’s bike was still there and all our children’s bikes were there.

“His bike had been there for six months and there were no issues but as soon as I put it up [online] it was gone.

“[The website] gives a vague description of location when looking at items, and also on Sundays the bike is regularly used along the road outside his mother’s address as our children are given their bike lessons.”

Winnie said her husband had owned the bike for three or four years and that he bought it for £300.

She said Peter had spotted the bike in the SE1 area the day after they realised it was missing and that they were

confident it was still in the area.

“Peter said he will use a tricycle if he has to to do the bike ride,” she added.

Peter’s sponsored bike ride is set to take place from Friday, May 26, to Sunday, May 28.

He is expected to cycle 200 miles from Wesley Chapel, in London, the final resting place of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, to the place of his birth at Epworth Rectory in Linconshire, to raise money for a new minibus.

The South London Mission needs the

use of a minibus for a number of reasons, including weekly foodbank and FareShare collections, taking children and young people on country breaks, and Scout trips.

EAST DULWICH Picturehouse staff went on strike again on Monday as they joined May Day demonstrations in Trafalgar Square.

Staff from East Dulwich were the latest of Picturehouse Cinemas Ltd’s five London branches who have campaigned for the London Living Wage since last year.

The East Dulwich staff, represented by the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (BECTU), also joined a demonstration outside the Picturehouse Central cinema in Shaftsbury Avenue.

Ben Lennon, who works as an usher and table waiter at the East Dulwich cinema, told the News that staff had originally planned to hold separate demonstrations at each of the five branches. But that plan was abandoned because new regulations under the Trade Union Act (2016) require strike to have their own trained “strike supervisors”.

But the 25-year-old from Peckham said the May Day celebration had an “exciting atmosphere”. He added that £600 has was donated to their strike fund.

What to ask when the politicians knock

IN THE run up to the General Election, you are going to get people knocking on your door begging for you to vote for them.

One of the things that they will promise is something called "Affordable housing".

Please please please, ask them what defines "Affordable housing".

I can absolutely guarantee that they won't be able give you an answer.

I have recently seen two adverts for properties in Spa Road. One is for a 1 bedroom flat that is up for sale for just under half a million quid. The other is for a 2 bedroom flat in The Old Town Hall for £840,000.

I would love to know how much Southwark Council sold off the Old Town Hall in Spa Road for.

Affordable housing in Bermondsey for local people?

Well yes. It's affordable if you just happen to be a multimillionaire!

There wasn't this stuck up attitude about swearing, but don't forget pubs were where working class men came back from the docks and let off a bit of steam.

Also before ‘the politically correct brigade’ come along, the pubs had the Public Bar, Saloon Bar and even a Private Bar in some boozers.

Maybe that saying will be eradicated under this system we live

under, the main question is all those people who are taking over a WORKING CLASS area and making it THEIR OWN. They was the Yuppies, now we have the ‘Gentrification of the area’.

Holes in Brexit cheerleaders’ view

TWO LETTERS in last week's Southwark News amply demonstrate the hole that Brexit cheerleaders find themselves in.

Firstly, Will Podmore attempts to avoid the fact that a majority now think that, in hindsight, handing control to zealots intent on sabotaging the British economy isn't such a good idea (The Times You Gov April 27). In London, and Southwark in particular, he's on the wrong side of popular sentiment.

Then there's Walworth stalwart Reg O'Donoghue's regular missives from the brextremist front line.

These are the direct result of conformity to tabloid disinformation campaigns over the last 40 years, so complaining about it now is rather disingenuous.

A better response is to ask yourself who benefits from the bonfire of worker's rights, environmental protection and holding hands with dodgy allies like Trump, Erdogan and, god help us, Le Pen? The answer is, not the likes of us. And why the enforced, divisive patriotism for an offshore, casino economy where schools and the NHS are finally privatised, and inequality is set in stone between generations?

Just take a look at May's dismal

voting record in parliament to see what she really believes in.

The reality that Hard Brexit at Any Cost will steadily lose votes has triggered a cynical U turn from the voter shy prime minister. London and the other major cities voted strongly to remain, and like Scotland and Northern Island, can't be so contemptuously dismissed by a haughty and disturbingly autocratic government.

It's time for those in the remaining Brexitlands of England and Wales to find some backbone, see through the hollow promises of an Empire 2.0. (soon to be advertised on the side of a big red bus) and resist May's attempted 'coronation'.

Open letter to get TRA hall back

WE OPPOSE the tendering out of Thurlow Lodge Community Hall on the Aylesbury Estate.

Thurlow Lodge is a tenants’ and residents’ (TRA) hall located on the ground floor of Wendover block. It was previously run by a management committee of three Aylesbury TRAs and Creation Trust. The management committee decided last year to give up the running of the hall and close it down, handing the keys to the council.

In January, the council tried to lock the hall up and evict homeless charity Divine Rescue which is based at Thurlow Lodge. Divine Rescue and their supporters, including tenants and residents of the Aylesbury Estate occupied the hall and prevented the closure. Wendover Community TRA (WCTRA) was set up to ensure the continued use of the hall as a TRA hall and to protect the interests of the residents Wendover block.

Now the council is refusing to allow WCTRA to manage the hall and is instead going through a tender process to invite other operators.

WCTRA should have the right to manage its own TRA hall. Where there are TRA halls on other estates

in Southwark, the local TRA manages them. It is not right to treat the residents of the Aylesbury Estate less favourably than other residents in the borough, especially when they are facing the destruction of their homes and dispersal of their community.

This is effectively a privatisation of the hall. The tender document does not preclude a private company bidding for the contract, although it is supposed to be run “not for profit”.

The contract does not provide for the TRA to have more than two general meetings in a year in the hall, and the hall will be allowed to be subdivided.

This shows that the council has no real commitment to supporting the TRA to provide events, meetings and activities through their own democratic self-organised structure.

There is also no acknowledgement that Divine Rescue use the main hall and the kitchen to provide lunches for the homeless, or that Divine Rescue holds a business lease for the premises.

Seventeen Southwark TRA reps signed an open letter to the council in January to withdraw the threat of tendering the hall. They received no response. Eleven Southwark community groups wrote to the council in February to express support for WCTRA and said that they were willing to work with WCTRA to ensure the hall is used as a fully functioning TRA hall with all the appropriate community events and activities. Again, they received no response.

We now call on Southwark Council to stop this tender process and immediately transfer Thurlow Lodge from the regeneration department to the housing department where it can be looked after in the same way as every other TRA hall in the borough.

We call on the council to hand the keys to Thurlow Lodge to the tenants and residents of Wendover and support WCTRA in their efforts to manage their own TRA hall on their own estate.

AVING GOOD mental health is about thriving, not just surviving, when life challenges us.

By looking after our mental health, we can build resilience to help us cope with stresses and difficult times.

There are many simple things that everyone can do to improve their mental health. Talking about feelings is important – if it feels awkward at first, try again at another time.

Keep in touch with friends and family; supportive and understanding people around you can help you through. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help, whether lending a hand to do something practical or simply by offering a listening ear.

Being active keeps your mind as well as your body fit. Exercise is believed to generate feel-good chemicals in the brain; it can boost self-esteem, concentration and help you to sleep, look and feel better. Walks in the park, gardening or housework all count as ‘being active’. Try to do about 30 minutes’ exercise at least five days a week.

A diet that’s good for your physical health is also good for your mental health, so eating well can make a difference too.

Alcohol does not help you to solve problems, it creates them and makes things even worse. Seek support if you need to reduce your drinking.

Make time in your life to rest and give yourself ‘me-time;’ also to do something you enjoy. If you are really tired, don’t feel bad about sleeping during the day if that helps, and make changes to your night-time routine and environment if you have trouble sleeping at night.

Above all, accept who you are. It’s much healthier to accept that you’re unique than to wish you were different.

ALL THOSE gripped by the Sunday evening ‘us and them’ drama Downton Abbey will know Michael Fox as Parker, the footman from downstairs who found himself upstairs with Lady Edith Crawley. Next week we can see him in the flesh (though I’m not sure we’ll see as much as her Ladyship…) in Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind at The Southwark Playhouse, writes Michael Holland...

Michael began acting when he was 5 and recalls ‘going up to auditions in London with my mum’, but really decided to pursue it seriously when he was 17.

He enrolled at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and says he had a ‘brilliant time there’, especially enjoying the ‘collaborative and devised theatre strand of the course, built around the work of Lecoq and Michael Chekhov’.

After being in such a ‘precarious’ industry for so long he knows the benefits of having supportive parents, telling me, ‘with a lot of highs and lows it helps to have a family who can bear to hear me go on about it all the time’.

Needless to say, Downton Abbey was definitely one of the highs of his exciting career and this young actor is thankful for the opportunity. But nothing is ever easy; Michael remembers the anxiety when he was after the role: ‘It was tense leading up to it, because I was hearing, ‘you're down to the last three... and then two…', and then once the excitement subsides, I was left with a feeling of, 'Oh God, I hope I don't mess it up!’ Understanding the pitfalls of the business he adds honestly: ‘I was very fortunate to become a part of it, and to work with some legends of the acting game’.

No longer living in the family home in High Wycombe, Michael is now based in Vauxhall, so very handy for the Southwark Playhouse.

He tells me, ‘I live with an old drama school pal. It's great round there, really close to a couple of nice pubs.’

After all the TV and film Mr Fox has done, I wanted to know what brought him back to theatre. ‘I've always loved being on stage because of the immediacy of an audience and the time to delve into text for a couple months, so I'm really happy to be a part of this show. I was buzzing even after the audition.’

I asked what attracted him to this play? I was drawn in from the very first stage direction, Shepard uses a full moon, watching ominously over the stage, and I just felt this atmosphere off the page. The scenes are built around familiar relationships between families, but he intertwines these incredibly

poetic moments that creep up on you.

And his character in it? ‘I play Frankie, Jake’s little brother. He is an intuitive man who is loyal to his family. He attempts to salvage what may be left in Jake’s violent wake, but finds himself caught between two conflicting families.’

How are rehearsals going?

‘Rehearsals are going really well so far. I feel lucky to be amongst such a talented bunch. Can't wait to get into the Playhouse and see it all come together.’

And I’ll be right there soaking up some of this moonlit atmosphere.

FIRST PERFORMED in London 1641, James Shirley’ The Cardinal is a study in the devious side of political power and court politics.

The dark, evil Cardinal, who plays favourites and uses those around him as pawns in his games, dominates the King of Navarre’s court, writes Matt Baker…

The plot centres on a recently widowed Duchess who wishes to marry her love and not the Cardinal's nephew. This angers the Cardinal and sets him on a path of terrible revenge. Chaos follows as the Cardinal's plans wreak havoc with those at court and leads to tragic consequences.

From the opening scene when the Cardinal, played by the excellent Stephen Boxer, addresses the audience, there is a great sense of comedy and satire. I was surprised by how funny the piece was given the tragic goings on, but the evening was full of laughs as well as drama.

Indeed, it moves along at a ferocious pace with the plot taking ever darker turns until the final act

provides a splendidly macabre ending. The audience was howling approval at the close and around me were many smiling appreciative faces.

A real gem has come to the Playhouse, and I suggest you get along for a real treat.

erry Scales was just a child when he was evacuated to Devon from his home in Bermondsey at the outbreak of the Second World War, writes Chiara Giordano...

He fell in love with country life, discovered a fondness for painting, and even got his first job.

But when he returned to Southwark as a twelve year old in 1945, he struggled to adjust to post-war London and turned to painting as a way of coping.

“I was evacuated to a town called Seaton, in Devon, during the war,” said the 84-year-old, who was born in Bermondsey but now lives in Greenwich.

“The Devon people were wonderful.

They were very friendly to us and I quickly became friendly with a group of boys, one of whom had a whole family who were fishermen.

“I remember my first job was going out with the fishing boat and I would take one oar and my friend would take the other and we would all row and check whether the lobster pots had caught anything and my pay for that was one big mackerel for supper.

“We had a local cinema and all of us young boys used to go every Saturday morning and a film came on called Fantasia by Walt Disney.

“I was deeply struck by the images in it when the scene came on of Zeus throwing thunderbolts. It was so well done it really set my imagination off and I started trying to paint at that point.

I would’ve been about ten or eleven then.

“Of course they were still child artworks really but it stuck in my mind so when I came back to London I lived in Rotherhithe very close to the river and I found that the river scenes of big ships passing up the Thames also excited me and I started doing drawings of those.”

Terry said he found London was “so different” from the city he had known when he returned after the war.

“It was so strange and aggressive and noisy that I really wanted to go back to Devon,” he said.

“I think it was the lack of green. There were trees in Bermondsey because they had been planted by Dr Salter but in Devon I had a very wild kind of free life.

“I would go out with a bottle of lemonade in the morning and wouldn’t return home until 6pm and all that time I would be in the woods climbing trees – but coming back to London everything was much more organised and that’s what I didn’t like.”

Terry joined St Joseph’s Roman Catholic School in Paradise Street, Rotherhithe, but was soon offered a place at Camberwell School of Art. “A the age of thirteen I was taken on at the art school, which was considered the best school in England for serious art study at the time, and I did very well there,” he said.

Terry was called up for national service at the age of about eighteen or nineteen and was based in the signals section of the RAF at the Isle of Dogs.

When he came out of the RAF at the age of about 20 or 21 he spent some time working at a commercial arts studio on Fleet Street designing posters

“It was interesting but it was badly paid,” said Terry. “My family had all worked on the Thames as stevedores and dockers for hundreds of years and my father said ‘you need to earn some proper money and come into the docks’ so I went into Surrey Docks in 1955. I worked quite hard for five years and earned quite good money on quite dangerous jobs.

“During those five years the dockers had quite a few strikes and during one of those strikes at the end I called into my old art school to see tutors I knew there and one of the heads of department asked if I could teach for the day because a teacher had taken ill.”

Terry taught for the day and ended up signing a contract for a full-time position at the school.

A free exhibition of Terry’s artwork portraying Bermondsey dockers and street scenes will be on display at West Greenwich Library from May 9 to June 10.

So it will take something different for another outfit offering the usual pizza and pasta fare to stand out from the crowd. Enter ‘O Ver, with its unique ingredient – Mediterranean seawater.

Situated on Southwark Street, ‘O Ver inhabits a triangular space on the

corner of Thrale Street.

It offers a mixture of seating, even in its intimate setting, with an imposing wooden table at the entrance, or single bench seats in the pavement-facing window for those wanting a quick pit-stop to gobble the Neapolitan street food.

With a couple of modern pizza ovens and an open kitchen at the back – stocked with huge bottles of seawater – it feels both authentic and classy.

My dinner accomplice and I ordered from both the street food menu while also picking two classic offerings from the mains.

We ordered the house wine – but only due to a review-restriction on sampling anything more expensive – which was a hearty bottle of Roceno Frappato, a Sicilian wine with a deep full-bodied flavour.

The polpettina delicata (veal meatballs) and the frittatina di pasta (deep fried macaroni cheese) came in small portions but left a big impression.

flavour, revealing a pleasant pistachio crunch, and although slightly overcrumbly in texture, it was more than made up for by the artichoke and garlic puree dip.

The frittatina was a slice of pure perfection, its hard exterior giving way to the oozing parmesan cheese and hot minced meat and pea inside.

With one bite, I was transported to a bustling Naples street scene, eating hearty but experimental food that even Nonna would be proud to call her own.

Once you’ve tasted one, you’ll want to stop off for another sample whenever you’re changing tube trains at London Bridge.

For the main event, we tried a pizza and a pasta dish. The pasta alla Silvia, with its tiny bits of Gramigana pasta, diced vegetables and sausage, was certainly tasty.

But where it should have grown in flavour, it felt sparse, with the lack of any sauce meaning its excitement wore thin after a few forkfuls.

The Paloma pizza is where the seawater concept came into its own.

The dough, especially the outer edges, was brilliantly fluffy and moreish. The thin, rolled bacon topping was crisp, the smoked mozzarella was soaked with taste, and the small chiodini mushrooms were a delight as each was demolished with a satisfying single bite.

The pizza felt slightly wet, but it was hard to know whether this was the effect of the seawater or simply that it was a tad undercooked. Still, it was hard not to be won over by this pizza with its understated twist.

For dessert, the tiramisu had sold out so we played a safe hand and tried the Borough Market ice cream, which turned out to be the perfect palate cleanser. Not everything has to come from Mamma’s kitchen after all – or the sea.

For those looking for a quirky take on Italian food, you could do far worse than heading to ‘O Ver for a pizza and plenty of bite-sized street dishes.

Gimmick or not, there is certainly something in the water at this Bankside joint.

DULWICH HAMLET’S season ended in disappointment at the final hurdle in their bid for promotion to the National League South.

Hamlet face another season in the Ryman League Premier Division after losing 2-1 to Bognor Regis Town in Monday’s play-off final.

Despite making a bright start Gavin Rose’s side fell two goals behind and couldn’t rescue the game after Ibrahim Kargbo halved the deficit in the 77th minute.

It was their second successive play-off defeat, as Bognor Regis, who finished the season second, stepped up to the sixth tier of English football.

Ibra Sekajja fired wide in the opening stages before the home side’s Sami ElAbd twice went close with headers.

Hamlet’s Gavin Tomlin then saw his shot saved as Hamlet attempted to take the lead.

Tomlin went close again moments later but Hamlet were behind 21 minutes in when Ollie Pearce set up Jimmy Muitt for a tap-in.

It was Tomlin again doing his best to get his side back into the game when he fired a free-kick towards goal after half an hour, but Jamie Howell’s side were relieved that the ball went just outside the post.

There was a celebratory mood at Roots Hall, and the Shrimpers’ place in the play-offs was set to be confirmed before they left the pitch.

Millwall had got away with it three times recently when they had failed to win. But not this time. Southend had beaten Bury to finally, on the last day, take advantage of a Millwall slip.

It was all the more frustrating because Millwall seemed to have had all the hard work done at The Memorial Stadium, twice in the first half taking a two-goal lead only to see it obliterated by longrange strikes from Chris Lines and, with just sixteen minutes left, Billy Bodin.

Now they had five minutes. Five minutes after being battered for most of the previous 40.

Lee Gregory had already left the pitch, one of the victims of a bug that a number of Millwall players had picked up in the hours before the game. Jimmy Abdou – who started for the first time since February 11 – was sick at half-time. So was Aiden O’Brien, and Jordan Archer was affected as well. Jed Wallace and Calum Butcher were too unwell to make the squad.

Shaun Hutchinson, on painkillers for a fractured rib and with stitches in for a cut he picked up earlier in the game, stood near the penalty spot as Shane Ferguson stood over a corner. Given Millwall had barely got out of their own half since the half-time break, it was likely it was all going to come down to this.

As the ball arced into the box, Hutchinson made his move, darting forward to leap and seem to hang in the air above two Bristol Rovers defenders.

Somehow he got to the ball first, majestically flicking a looping header beyond Joe Lumley to put his side 4-3 up.

It will be an iconic image in Millwall’s history, Hutchinson, with a black headband, sprinting towards the 1,291 Millwall fans in celebration. Steve Morison has an arm around the defender’s shoulder and the ecstatic expressions of joy on both players’ faces illustrate the emotion of the moment.

Yet that wasn’t even the end of the drama in a contest that was packed with it, the momentum first swinging Millwall’s way, then emphatically back with Bristol Rovers, and sixth place back in the possession of Southend.

There were still five minutes of normal time left and then added time to hold out. That was when experience showed.

First, knowing he was going to be substituted, Ferguson made his way to the other side of the pitch before ambling back when the board went up to indicate Jake Cooper was coming on.

Then Morison took the ball up the left flank, saw a tackle was coming, and immediately went down on contact.

Morison was then booked for kicking the ball away, and another minute was wasted when Tom Lockyer hit the turf, home fans wanted the Lions striker sent off, and both players were spoken to by referee Darren Handley.

minute at that stage and Rovers had one last opportunity to get the ball forward.

Lumley left it, instead moving into Millwall’s box. The free-kick was aimed at him and for a moment it looked like he would reach it. Byron Webster was there, Abdou too as the ball bounced in the area, and finally Archer came off his line to end all the uncertainty.

Moments later Handley blew the final whistle. Millwall’s players, physically and emotionally exhausted, embraced.

Harris sprinted to the away fans and leapt as he punched the air.

It was a barely imaginable scene after Bodin had beaten Archer direct from a free-kick in the 74th minute to make it 33. It was difficult to see how Millwall could recover from such a devastating blow and get the win they needed to make the play-offs.

Few could ever question this side’s heart, though, and Hutchinson symbolised it on Sunday.

So too did Tony Craig, so often the subject of criticism, a lot of it unfair, but who never takes a backward step or

backs down from a fight. He scored for the first time in eighteen months to put Millwall 2-0 up after 25 minutes following Gregory’s opener.

With Millwall protecting a 3-2 lead at the start of the second half Craig produced a stunning piece of defending, stretching out a left leg to flick the ball away from Jermaine Easter, who was ready to apply the finish at the back post.

Craig and his defence had been under incessant pressure in the second half,

playing against a wind that meant Archer’s goal-kicks barely made it past halfway, while Lumley only had to gently lob the ball to see it reach Millwall’s defensive eighteen-yard line.

There were so many fires to put out in that period. Millwall were being overrun down their right, and Harris sent on Fred Onyedinma in the 62nd minute to give Shaun Cummings more protection than a tiring David Worrall could.

Hutchinson heads home 85th-minute winner to send Lions into play-offs

It had all been so different for the first half an hour of the game, until Easter made it 21 to spark his side. Gregory’s second seemed to put Millwall back in control before Lines beat Archer from outside the box.

It was hard to see Millwall holding out the more Rovers cranked up the pressure. Their equaliser, though, came after Handley had penalised Shaun Williams for a foul on Byron Moore when there didn’t appear to be much if any contact. Bodin, Rovers’ best player, curled his free-kick over the wall and into the top corner despite Archer getting two hands to the ball.

Harris turned away and raised his hands to his head in anguish, 46 games and nothing to show at the end of it.

But it wasn’t over, and Hutchinson rose to thrillingly snatch sixth and put Millwall two games away from Wembley.

SCUNTHORPE APPEARED to be racing towards the Championship when they topped the League One table on Boxing Day.

But a nine-game winless league run in February and March saw them slip out of contention for automatic promotion, before they won seven of their last nine to finish third.

News spoke to Scunthorpe Telegraph sports reporter Paul Crute (pictured above) to get an insight into their season and how they see their clash with Millwall.

Veen stepped into the breach on Sunday against Coventry and scored a sublime equaliser.

Will Scunthorpe be worried about any Millwall players in particular?

Lee Gregory, Steven Morison and Aiden O’Brien are the obvious dangers, but Shaun Williams and Shane Ferguson also scored against the Iron in the fixture at The Den in April and have not missed many games this season.

Scunthorpe were nineteen points ahead of Millwall after their 3-0 win over the Lions in December. What caused their form to dip in the early months of the year?

It is hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong during the early months. In some of their matches they were on the wrong end of a few refereeing decisions, and as the winless run went on it obviously affected the players’ confidence.

The 3-2 defeat to Gillingham in March when the Iron were leading 2-0 but gave away three penalties in the last fifteen minutes to lose 3-2 was the hardest defeat to take, along with lastminute losses to Charlton and Oxford.

Q

The Iron have won their last five games. Are they back to the level they were at when they seemed to be on their way to going up automatically?

They seem to be getting back to their best and a return of seven wins from the last nine matches is good considering the run they were on before that.

They still give the odd sloppy goal away but are getting the victories they need.

Their current run is very reminiscent of last season when they won their final six games but just missed out on the playoffs on goal difference.

What weaknesses do you think Alexander will try to exploit in this Millwall side?

Millwall seem to be quite fragile at the back recently, conceding three at Bristol Rovers and against Oxford.

They only have two clean sheets in their last thirteen games in all competitions, so with Scunthorpe’s attacking threat they should be targeting the Millwall goal.

Jed Wallace gets behind the Scunthorpe defence to create another chance for Millwall, who won 3-1 the last time the sides met.

Q

Scunthorpe jumped to third on the last day. Are they happier facing Millwall than Bradford?

I don’t think the Iron minded who they faced, in all honestly.

If you look at the teams in the play-offs you could make a case for all of them getting through to the final.

All the teams are in the top six for a reason and, whomever Scunthorpe faced, it would have provided a stern test of their credentials.

Scunthorpe have the second leg at Glanford Park. Does manager Graham Alexander see that as an advantage?

Alexander has said publicly that he doesn’t see having the second leg at home as an advantage, but fans might

see it differently.

Personally I feel it helps knowing what they have to do, but Alexander says they have to perform in both legs to have a chance of winning regardless of which comes first.

Q

What will Scunthorpe have learned from their 3-1 defeat to Millwall at The Den last month?

They will definitely want to put that result right on Thursday. They will have to be a lot tighter at the back and will then try and break down the Lions defence.

Alexander felt they were on the back foot the minute they gave away a penalty so early on, so he will want to be solid from the start this time.

Q

Who are the players in the Scunthorpe side Millwall will have to stop to have a chance of going through to the final?

Josh Morris is certainly one and although he has not been as prolific scoring-wise as he was earlier in the season, he is still providing plenty of assists (he has fifteen so far this season, as well as 20 goals).

Stephen Dawson provides plenty of energy in midfield, while Murray Wallace in the centre of defence has not missed a minute this season. Goalkeeper Joe Anyon has produced a few worldclass saves since coming in for the injured Luke Daniels.

GARY ALEXANDER is confident his Scunthorpe side can handle the pressure in their playoff semi-final against Millwall.

The Iron won their last five games of the League One season and overtook Fleetwood on the final day to finish third and set up a last-four meeting with the Lions.

Scunthorpe were nineteen points ahead of Millwall after they won 3-0 at Glanford Park in December, but then won just five of their next eighteen league games before a 3-1 loss at The Den in April.

Scunthorpe were in danger of dropping out of the top six before their late-season rally.

Millwall’s form, by contrast, has been patchy since Tottenham Hotspur ended their FA Cup run in the quarterfinals in March.

The Lions were primed to challenge for automatic promotion following their 2-1 win over MK Dons in early March, their seventeenth game unbeaten in all competitions.

But after their defeat to Spurs at White Hart Lane they won just four of their last eleven league games to scrape into the play-offs with their 4-3 win at Bristol Rovers last Sunday.

Millwall have met Scunthorpe four times over two season and won just once.

The Iron pack plenty of firepower, finishing with 80 goals after 46 League One games, second only to champions Sheffield United and

fourteen more than Millwall.

Millwall have more experience of big-game occasions after their FA Cup run this season and their play-off final appearance at Wembley in 2015-16.

But Alexander insists his players will believe they can progress to this season’s decider.

“We’re going into it in good form,” Alexander said. “The players are in a good place mentally but that doesn’t guarantee anything.

“We did exceptionally well except for a six-week period when we couldn’t buy a win.

“But the players showed a great mentality to get ourselves out of that hole and show the form we did when we won seven of the last nine games.

That gives the players great confidence going into these games.

Q

Millwall defeated three Premier League teams this season in the FA Cup, have the experience of playing at White Hart Lane, and last season at Wembley. Does this Iron side have much big-game experience?

In manager Alexander they have a boss who has won at Wembley in a play-off final (with Burnley when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2009) which could prove invaluable.

Paddy Madden scored for Yeovil in a play-off final to take the Glovers up to the Championship in 2013, while David Mirfin was part of the Scunthorpe side that last won in the play-offs in 2009 (against Millwall).

Ivan Toney also helped Barnsley to win in the play-offs last season, so there is plenty of big-game experience there.

Finally, what’s your prediction over two legs?

I think Scunthorpe will nick it over the two legs. I think they will be happy with a draw at The Den where I think it could be 1-1 followed by a 2-1 victory for the Iron at Glanford Park on Sunday.

“The mental side of it is a big thing once you get to these pressure games and looking at the big games we’ve played this season I think the players have handled those occasions really well.”

League One play-off semi-final first-leg preview

MILLWALL WILL hope it is the Scunthorpe side they defeated in April rather than the rampant one that hammered the Lions in December that turns up at The Den on Thursday night.

The odds are against that scenario, though, as Scunthorpe ended the regular League One season on a five-game winning streak.

Their last defeat was against Millwall at the start of April, before they regained the form that seemed set to propel them to automatic promotion to the Championship before they stuttered in the first few months of this year.

Millwall can take some comfort from the fact that Scunthorpe’s last three wins were against the sides that finished in the bottom three positions in League One. It’s difficult to predict what Millwall team will turn up. Their 4-3 win against Brsitol Rovers last Sunday that sealed a play-off spot summed up their form this year: They raced into a 2-0 lead and looked like they were coasting to sixth, before they let in the home side twice before the break and were then pinned back for almost the entire second half

before Shaun Hutchinson got their late, crucial goal.

The defensive stability that brought nine successive clean sheets in January and February seems to have deserted them, despite boss Neil Harris having most of his defensive resources available to him, bar Hutchinson’s regular injury setbacks meaning he has been in and out of the side.

Millwall have kept just one clean sheet in their last ten games and the form of Jordan Archer is also a concern. He hasn’t hit the heights he did last season and there were question marks over him again at The Memorial Stadium last weekend when he got two hands to Billy Bodin’s free-kick but couldn’t keep the ball out as Bristol Rovers made it 3-3 to leave Millwall on the brink.

If all of those affected by the virus that hit the squad last week are fit then Harris has several difficult selection decisions to make.

Calum Butcher will come back into the match-day eighteen if he has recovered from his bug. Jed Wallace, the other

player who wasn’t fit to start last Sunday, could be brought straight back into the team at the expense of David Worrall.

Shane Ferguson took three corners that led to goals against the Pirates, but if he is included it would probably mean leaving out a goal threat in Aiden O’Brien, who has scored fifteen times this season.

Tony Craig will start at left-back and play his 55th game in 2016-17. This will also be his fourth play-off campaign with Millwall and he hopes it will be a repeat of 2010 when Millwall won promotion a year after losing the 2009 League One decider 3-2 to Scunthorpe at Wembley.

“I know what it’s all about,” Craig said.

“It’s a great occasion and if we get a fully fit squad we’ll see where it will take us.”

This will be Millwall’s tenth game in knockout competitions at The Den this season. The Lions have lost just two of their previous nine, and Harris knows the results between the sides this season make it a difficult game to call.

“We had a really strong performance at The Den against them a few weeks ago,

but they had a really good performance against us in December,” he said.

“We’ve shown how good we can be in cup ties this year. I’m delighted to be at The Den on Thursday night.”

Scunthorpe are expected to be without Charlie Goode and Tom Hopper. Matt Crooks, who scored at The Den in April, is injured and has gone back to Glasgow Rangers.

The return leg is at Glanford Park on Sunday and kicks off at 6.30pm.

MILLWALL ARE monitoring Lincoln City’s Sean Raggett as they make plans for their summer transfer moves.

Raggett, a 23-year-old centreback, caught the eye in the Imps’ run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup this season.

Raggett got an 89th-minute winner for the non-league side in their 1-0 victory over Premier League

Burnley at Turf Moor in the fifth round, one of seven goals he scored this season as Lincoln won the National League and were promoted to League Two. Last month, after a newspaper report linked the Lions with a move for Raggett, Lincoln managing director Kevin Cooke insisted the club hadn’t had any approach for the defender.

"I've not heard anything about that, apart from rumours I've seen on social media,” he said.

"I don't know how these things start but I'm not aware of any approach for Sean Raggett."

Millwall boss Neil Harris is a friend of his Lincoln counterpart Danny Cowley, and they have done business before. Tom King spent the second half of last season on loan at Cowley’s Braintree Town.

Millwall don’t know what division they will be in next season and that could affect their pulling power.

Jake Cooper’s loan deal from Reading ends after Millwall’s season is over. He doesn’t seem to have a future under Royals boss Jaap Stam, but Millwall could find it difficult to convince him to drop a division if they don’t go up through the play-offs.

Sid Nelson hasn’t made the impact expected on loan at Newport County, while failure to go up will lead to speculation over the future of Byron Webster, whose family still live in the north of England.

Raggett fits the mould of young, hungry players that Lions boss Neil Harris wants to bring to the club.

Raggett was a youth player at Gillingham before joining Dover, for whom he played over 150 times.

He was called up for an England ‘C’ international in 2015, and joined Lincoln last summer.

Harris has also watched Raggett in action this season.

The Lions sealed sixth spot with five minutes of the League One season remaining at The Memorial Stadium against Bristol Rovers last Sunday when Shaun Hutchinson headed home a late dramatic winner.

Hutchinson was playing despite a cracked rib and needed painkillers to get through the game. He admitted afterwards the injury was causing him discomfort, but Millwall hope he will be fit to start in the centre of defence against the Iron.

Millwall boss Neil Harris could also have to make late decisions over Jed Wallace and Calum Butcher. The pair were worst-hit by the bug that swept through the hotel where Millwall were staying in Bristol last weekend and they were left out of the match-day squad.

Jimmy Abdou was ill at half-time in that 4-3 win over the Pirates, while Aiden O’Brien and Jordan Archer were also affected.

Lee Gregory, who scored two goals last weekend to bring his season’s tally to seventeen, was struggling and had to go off in the second half.

Scunthorpe, meanwhile, could be without a number of first-team players. Matt Crooks is injured and has returned to Glasgow Rangers.
