POLICE ARE investigating a suspected arson attack in Camberwell, after several people were injured when they were forced to throw themselves

out of a second floor window to escape a fire.

The blaze in Northlands Street occurred at around 4.30am and devastated three storeys and the roof of a terraced house. A man in his forties has been arrested.

Trying to keep us warm with an increasingly threadbare blanket

T

HERE ARE always going to be winners and losers in budgets and with the ever decreasing circles that local councils have to tread in terms of central government funding, the winners are likely be few and far between this time around.

Having said that, the Labour council’s budget proposals, set out at Full Council this week, have tried their best to provide a blanket to cover all those needy services, even if it becomes increasingly threadbare as funding cuts tear holes.

Savings of 50% have been achieved in youth services, with only a 10% reduction in front line services - this is an impressive statistic. But of course, 10% is still a large cutback in terms of services offered, and you also have to question how sustainable the increased productivity is - how far can you push departments before they really start to creak under the strain?

The other big debate of the night was over environmental services, and whilst the Lib Dems were instrumental in pushing recycling during their coalition years with the Tories in Southwark, it has to be said that it is the current administration that has overseen a transformation in street cleaning. The days of waking up to streets full of rubbish are now happily consigned to the past, so the proposal - in fact scrapped after the debate - to ditch overnight street cleaning, shows how desperate the beancounters are to make the figures add up. This is not a policy that Labour Southwark would have put forward happily.

Central government insists local authorities still retain handsome reserves and are guilty of shocking inefficiencies and like any large organisation, this may have some truth to it. But at some point in our view a point that has possibly already been passed - the government must accept that cuts will also have a damaging effect on local authorities’ abilities to provide essential services.

And it’s the really needy who will suffer the most.

Camberwell station?

HE NEWS that Camberwelll station may re-open a hundred years after it was closed to the public is fantastic.

Let’s hope that these are serious plans that will come to fruition - as the poor residents of SE5 have been in this position before. Despite desperately needing better transport links, they are constantly overlooked as other areas are always considered a better proposition.

However, if Mayor Boris Johnson and TfL are serious about re-opening the old station, then it should not be done this time in competition with any other area.

Take it with a heavy pinch of salt, but the suggestion is still welcome, all the same.

FORGET THE doomed Bakerloo Line extension – SE5 residents may yet benefit from a transport boost after it was revealed that Transport for London (TfL) is “investigating” reopening the long-closed mainline Camberwell station.

The ghost station, which shut its doors to passengers exactly a century ago and has since been reclaimed by nature, may be included on the Thameslink line.

Located suitably enough on Camberwell Station Road, the station served the mainland ‘City Line’ from Herne Hill to Farringdon Street when it first opened in 1862. The line also served another long-gone station, Borough Road, in Borough, which also closed in the early-20th century.

The proposal to re-open it was revealed during a Mayor’s Question Time exchange between Boris Johnson and Val Shawcross, the London Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark.

In a response to Ms Shawcross’ enquiry about how transport was going to be improved in Camberwell, given TfL’s rejection of the Bakerloo

Line extension through the area, Mr Johnson said he was “working” on plans to re-open the old station.

He said: “TfL is investigating proposals to reopen the disused station with stakeholders, including the London Borough of Southwark. Initial feasibility indicates it would be possible to construct a modern station at this location if timetable changes could be made to accommodate an extra stop.

“TfL will be working with Network Rail and the London Boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth over the next few months to further develop the feasibility of this proposal.”

Ms Shawcross welcomed the news, explaining: “I know that when it was announced that the Old Kent Road routing for a new Bakerloo Line extension was chosen for further study a lot of people in Camberwell, and myself were understandably disappointed. Considering its location so close to central London, the lack of transport infrastructure in Camberwell is well overdue for attention.

“This is a positive indication that TfL do have ambition to finally tackle this problem and I’m very pleased. This kind of project is a fairly long term undertaking but the early signs are very good, so watch this space to see how the plans develop.”

A GUNMAN who was accused of shooting an acquaintance who smoked too much of a joint in a packed Elephant and Castle pub could be free in weeks after his trial fell apart at the Old Bailey.

The prosecution dropped charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm last week after Richard Walsh, who was shot in the Rose and Crown, Rodney Street, in 2012, failed to identify the man accused of opening fire.

Robert Mortby, 28, had handed himself in to police last September after his picture was plastered on billboards in Gibraltar. Prosecutor Zoe Johnson QC said he went “on the run” following the shooting. He became one of ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’ on the UK National Crime Agency list before agreeing to be extradited to the UK. Earlier this week, Mortby was

accused of opening fire on Mr Walsh on July 28 four years ago for smoking too much of a joint they were sharing. The victim was hit twice in the abdomen, where the bullets are still lodged, while another bullet grazed the leg of his friend, Christopher Green.

But Mr Walsh did not see who shot him, and he failed to identify Mortby in court on February 25. Mortby was jailed for 15 months by Judge Richard Marks QC for possession of a firearm and a prohibited weapon, but could be free within weeks due to time he has served on remand.

Mortby had admitted possessing a ‘muzzle-loading flint lock pistol’ and a CS gas canister. Prosecutors today offered no evidence on the outstanding charges.

Mortby, of no fixed address, denied attempted murder and possession of a firearm on 28 July 2012.

He admitted possession of a firearm and a prohibited weapon on 30 July 2012.

Shutdown after live hand grenade found

RIOT POLICE descended on Bermondsey last week when a man armed with a “large knife” barricaded himself inside his home.

After a three hour stand-off, officers forced entry and used a taser to incapacitate the resident in Burbage Close, just off Bricklayers Arms, at around midday on February 26.

A 45-year-old man was arrested following the incident on suspicion of assaulting police and possessing a Class A drug. He was taken to hospital and sectioned under the Mental Health Act, before being bailed without charge until mid-May. Onlookers watching the siege unfold were held back at several roadblocks around Lyly House.

Local resident Jack Townsend said he thought there was "a riot in Bermondsey" when he woke up and saw the huge numbers of armed police

swarming the area.

He told the News: "I looked out the window at around 10am and saw loads of police. I went out to see what was going on and loads arrived just as I did.

It was just crazy, I thought there was a

riot in Bermondsey!"

A police spokesperson had earlier said "a man had barricaded himself into the address". They added that he was believed to be armed with a "large knife."

WALWORTH WAS shut down earlier this week after a live hand grenade was found in a charity shop.

Police locked down the area after the explosive was left as a "donation" at the Walworth Road branch of Sense, a charity raising funds for the deaf and blind.

Walworth Road, Fielding Street, Penrose Street, Albany Road and others roads were closed to traffic during the bomb scare, while crowds of onlookers gathered at police cordons.

THE HERNE Hill birthplace of a Hollywood film star and director has been marked with not one but two commemorative plaques.

The plaques pay tribute to actress Ida Lupino and her comedian father Stanley Lupino, who both lived at the Ardbeg Road home in the 1910s before embarking on a life of stardom.

Ida, who already has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, starred in silver screen hits including The Sea Wolf and High Sierra.

Her father gained a reputation as a music hall entertainer, as well as in musical comedies and acrobatic

displays.

The plaques were installed by theatre charity The Music Hall Guild of Great Britain & America, who along with The Theatre and Film Guild aim to celebrate the lives and careers of music hall, theatre and film stars through commemorative plaques.

Founder Adrian Barry said: “The Lupino family were a celebrated theatrical dynasty of acrobats, eccentric dancers, comedians, actors and pantomimists, who are proud that their origins can be traced back to the 17th century. Their contribution to our collective cultural heritage is huge and we feel it is right to commemorate them in this way.”

A police spokesperson confirmed that they had attended the scene at around 9.30am after a shop owner discovered "suspicious item."

At 10.30am the incident was stood down by police, who removed the item.

Residents threw themselves from second floor window

POLICE ARE investigating an arson attack in Camberwell, after several people were injured when they were forced to throw themselves out of a second floor window to escape a fire.

The blaze in Northlands Street occurred at around 4.30am and devastated three storeys and the roof of a terraced house. A man in his forties has been arrested.

Five people are being treated in hospital for what police described as “fall-related injuries.” They are believed to have jumped from a second storey window in order to flee the blaze and are described as being in a “serious but stable condition.”

Others injured their hands and feet on broken glass, while another man reportedly shimmied

down a drain pipe to escape the inferno.

A resident of the neighbouring flat, who only wished to be identified as Chris, told the News: “I heard a bang when some of them crashed their way out of the ground floor window. I think others were jumping out the second floor window. The flames were f*****g huge.

“I was evacuated down the street and we watched what was happening. I was watching the fire and a little bit worried about it spreading to my home but it didn’t really cross my mind, I was mostly worried about the people inside.”

The house is now borded up, with extensive smoke damage to the front door and windows.

Dented and broken wheelie bins lie on their sides in the front garden, suggesting they may have been used to break the fall of

people jumping from the building.

A police spokesperson said: “One man, aged in his forties, has been arrested in connection with this incident. This fire is being treated as arson by police.

Enquiries continue.”

The man was bailed without charge, with a return date is yet to be set.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters spent four hours battling the blaze before finally bringing it under control at 8.49am, by which point it had “almost entirely damaged” the ground and second floor and

caused “severe damage” to the first floor and roof.

A spokesperson for the Fire Brigade said: “There were no working smoke alarms in the property. Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together.

“This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.”

A BOROUGH Market trader has been ordered to pay almost £4,000 after breaking European Union rules on labelling fresh food.

Paul Wheeler, director of Paul Wheeler (Fresh Supplies) Ltd, pleaded guilty to eighteen separate labelling offences when he appeared at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on February 17.

Following a fifteen-month investigation, it was found that eighteen fresh food products were being offered to customers without labels detailing the country of origin and, where required, the variety and quality class.

Wheeler was fined £2,100 and also made to pay a further £1,770 in prosecution and investigation costs and

a £40 victim surcharge.

Paul Caldwell, RPA Operations Director said: “Concerted efforts were made by the HMI to work closely with Mr Wheeler and his staff with face-toface meetings, verbal warnings and formal written notices, all aimed at achieving improved compliance from the business.

“HMI relies on face-to-face inspections to provide advice and guidance to retailers such as Mr Wheeler, to help them fully appreciate the value of adopting clear and transparent labelling, to help reassure customers of the quality and origin of the fresh produce they are buying.

“Unfortunately such advice is not always heeded and when all other options have been exhausted we will resort to the use of criminal sanction to bring about a required change in behaviour.”

Fundraising dance as group eye world event ROTHERHITHE

A SPECIAL fundraising dance display will be held in Rotherhithe next week for a group of Irish dancers preparing to strut their stuff at the world championships.

The girls from the Deborah Whelan School will put on a display at Whelans pub in Rotherhithe Old Road on March 5 ahead of their trip to Scotland later that month.

An eight-person team will compete in the Ceili portion of the tournament, being held from February 20 to 27, while an 18-year-old dancer called Amber-Rose Murphy will perform in the solo category.

Head teacher Deborah Whelan told the News: “The whole year has been leading up to this trip. I am over the moon they qualified, it is not easy,

especially for Amber dancing solo.

“It absolutely takes over their lives at the moment. The girls are taking four or five classes a week at the moment, and each takes two hours and four on Saturday. I don’t think people realise how much effort it requires. Some of the younger girls are already training for next year!”

The tournament will be held at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow, which holds a special resonance for Deborah.

She said: “It is where I won my world championship in 2002, so it is definitely a bit special going back with the girls.”

The dancers will put on a display of the dances they will be performing at the world championships, while a raffle will also take place.

The fun starts at 8pm and their will be opportunities to donate to help fund the girls’ transport, accommodation and dresses.

High SE1 air medic callout

THE LONDON Air Ambulance treated more people in SE1 than in almost any other postcode in the capital last year.

The charity tended to 31 people in the area in 2015, bettered only by W1 with 32 and N1 with 38. Southwark as a whole saw 44 people treated.

A PENSIONER recently named Southwark’s Neighbour of the Year has said she feels “terrorised”, after human poo was allegedly pushed through her front door.

Val Fen, 74, of Camberwell, who is also chair of the Elmington Estate’s Tenants’ and Residents’ Association (TRA), said the “disgusting” act happened on February 13.

Val says she was shocked to find someone had “forced a bag of poo through my letter box.”

“I called the police but all they did when they came here was say they were going to ‘take a note of it’.

Tributes pour in for popular Peckham dog walker

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to a Peckham man known as a friendly face to the area’s dog walkers, but who recently died after a battle with cancer.

Gary Clark of Linden Grove in Nunhead died aged 53 on February 15, having spent six weeks at St Christopher’s Hospice.

Lynne Mckeon, a friend of Mr Clark, has told the News he was greatly comforted in his last days by having a framed pictured of his beloved English Bull Terrier, Benson, at his bedside.

Benson, who Lynne says was Mr Clark’s “best friend in the world” sadly died in October, but will go

down in Peckham history for winning the Golden Oldie prize at the 'Peckham Rye Fun Dog Show.

“The bond between Gary and Benson was unbreakable,” Lynn said.

“Gary and Benson were very well known at Peckham Rye Park where they walked together every day.

“I got to know him from walking my Rhodesian Ridgeback, Zampa, and stopping to talk to him every time. Zampa and Benson actually became best buds when they both won prizes at the dog show.

“He was such a kind and caring person and would always help others whenever he could. I took the photo of Benson to the hospice for Gary and it gave him such a lift.

Fifty-three was no age to die.”

Mr Clark was also known to have worked as a builder, but had been training in acupuncture before his disease got the better of him.

Lynne and two of friends of Mr Clark, Rose Faulkner and Jacqui Gleeson, are organising a memorial service to take place on Tuesday, March 8 – which would have been Mr Clark’s 54th birthday.

The service at the All Saints Church in Blenheim Grove will begin at 1.30pm, and the three plan to release 54 balloons into the air as a special tribute.

“Each balloon is going to have a personal, handwritten message from each person who loved Gary, then we will set them free into the sky,” Lynne said.

A CAMPAIGN to erect a memorial plaque to the victims and heroes of a WW1 zeppelin attack in Walworth has reached an early conclusion after a commemorative tablet was discovered hidden in plain sight in Burgess Park.

Last week, the News reported on the campaign by historian Stephen Bourne to mark the October 19, 1917 attack with a memorial, after an original plaque was seemingly lost during the construction of the park.

Southwark Council leader Peter John joined the campaign and issued plans for an “appropriate memorial” to be rededicated to the twelve victims of the bombing and the three Walworth bobbies who risked their lives entering a burning building to prevent the death toll from rising.

However, it has now emerged that a plaque, which replaced the old memorial on the now-lost Calmington Road, already exists in Chumleigh Gardens, not far from where the zeppelin’s “aerial torpedo” actually landed.

Stephen told the News: “Nobody told me it was there, and I actually visited the gardens to look for it on several occasions! I’m delighted to find it though.”

The plaque is now in its second incarnation, after the original was damaged a few years ago during an event in Chumleigh Gardens. For a period, possibly while Stephen was investigating its whereabouts, there was no memorial to the tragedy while a new

one was being constructed.

Stephen said: “It is wonderful to have found the tablet commemorating the victims – although sadly there is still no tribute to the police officers who risked their lives.”

When the bomb fell, Inspector Edward Wright, PC Jesse Christmas and PC Robert Melton, who was actually offduty at home just a few houses down from the blast, raced to the scene. They entered the wreckage, despite flames and a gas leak, and managed to save a number of people who were cowering in the basement.

Using old maps, Stephen tracked down the site of the bombing, located at the old corner of Calmington Road and Albany Street, which is now covered by trees after the area was cleared to make way for Burgess Park after WW2.

Stephen said: “It is incredible to think something so dramatic happened here. It is a shame there is no plaque here but I was told it was placed in Chumleigh Gardens due to the threat of it being vandalised on the main road. The important thing is that we have found the tablet, which is rightly honouring a tragic event.”

A COLLECTION of last remaining Aylesbury Estate residents say they have been dealt a lousy deal by Southwark Council on flats to replace the ones they are being forced out of.

There are eleven Aylesbury lease holders waiting to hear the outcome of their legal challenges against the council’s attempts to make compulsory purchases on their flats.

In the meantime, they have been advised by Southwark Council to “express an interest” in equity shares of flats at the soon-to-be-completed Harvard Gardens block, located in Sedan Way, Walworth.

But two of these lease holders have spotted that the Harvard Gardens flats recommended to them with a price tag of up to £695,000 could be found for around £100,000 less on the open

market.

Speaking to the News, Beverley Robinson and Agnes Kabuto, both Aylesbury lease holders who are part of phases 1B and 1C of the council’s plans to buy up the estate, said they felt dismayed that they “may never be able to own their own homes again”.

“The remaining lease holders here have been offered to show an interest in an equity share of less than 50 per cent on a two-bedroom flat, supposedly valued between £620,000 and 695,000,” said Beverley.

“But we’ve found these same flats being advertised by L&Q from £560,000 on RightMove. Why are being quoted a value that more than what’s on the open market, and basically only offered a chance to own a less-than-half share of these new flats? It’s a joke.

“The council haven’t told us how much we’re going to be given if they successfully make the compulsory purchase orders, but it will never be enough for us to own our own properties again.”

GP Practice slammed by health watchdog BERMONDSEY

A BERMONDSEY GP practice has received a damning report from a health watchdog in which it is slammed as uncaring, unsafe and ineffective.

An inspection by the Care Quality Commission, which was carried out last November, has placed Grange Road Practice in special measures.

“Significant areas of concern” were discovered and the facility, located in the Bermondsey Health Centre, was given an overall rating of “inadequate” – the lowest mark possible.

The report stated: “Patients said they were not always treated with compassion, dignity and respect by staff and did not always feel involved

in their care and decisions about their treatment.”

It added that “basic life support training” had not been undertaken by several staff members.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, said there was “no excuse” for the poor quality of care being provided by the surgery.

He said: “The inspectorate’s investigation paints a devastating picture of the quality of care available at this surgery. Local people deserve better healthcare and need to know their clinic is safe. Currently they don’t have that reassurance and the surgery must improve massively and rapidly. There really is no excuse for substandard care in our part of London and I will be monitoring their progress closely.”

But Agnes, Beverley and their nine colleagues say this could leave them homeless for a month.

“The other problem with this offer on the Harvard Gardens flats is we have so far been told we won’t be able to move in until the end of May. But we could already have been forced out of our flats weeks before then,” Beverley said.

Agnes, 57, said: “I own my property outright. With the deal they are offering us we will only have a share – that’s it.

“We have been asked to ‘express an interest in these flats’ but we have not even been told what value this share is going to be.”

special measures from the NHS and Southwark CCG. If the practice is still ranked as inadequate after the next inspection, due to take place in May, it may face steps including loss of licence and de-registration.

Memorial park located outside Redriff Primary School A ROTHERHITHE park has been named after Tommy Blackmore, the 20-year-old Bermondsey boy who was killed in an unprovoked attack outside a nightclub in June.

His brother Bradley visited the newly-created “Tommy’s Park”, located outside the main entrance Redriff Primary School, where Tommy attended as a pupil, earlier this week with his children.

He told the News: “It is really nice, the kids absolutely loved it. It’s great to have somewhere where they can go and play and we can remember Tommy. It could be here for 20 or 30 years or even longer.

“Tommy was a great uncle to them.

He always did the school runs, he said the kids were his pick-me-up. If he was ever stressed, he would play with them. He said they helped clear his head. It is a shame how much they are missing out now. But they will never forget him and the park will help that.”

The park was created by developers Barratt, who were working with Redriff Primary School, where Tommy is still fondly remembered by staff.

Headmaster Mickey Kelly said: “After Tommy died we wanted to do something to remember him. He was

a fantastic boy: cheeky, irreverent, the funniest fella you will ever meet.

“He kept us on our toes but he was a great kid – extremely playful.

When children are playing in the park I want them to ask who Tommy was. They’ll know that he was a kid, who played just like them.”

Tommy died in June when convicted drug dealer Lloyd Smythe, 29, from the Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, delivered a “boxing jab” to the head outside Mono Lounge nightclub near Tower Bridge on June 12.

Tommy was a “totally innocent victim” in the unprovoked attack, for which Smythe was jailed for manslaughter.

TWO CARS were left damaged following a rush hour smash in Jamaica Road earlier this week.

Luckily no-one was injured in the incident, which saw first responders

hurry to cover leaking fluid from both cars with sand in order to reduce the risk of a fire.

The accident, which occurred at around 7:50am, has caused delays in Jamaica Road, Southwark Park Road and the surrounding area.

Police said no injuries were reported and no arrests made.

THE BOROUGH’S councillors gathered last week to vote on a proposed budget that set out a council tax hike of two per cent and sweeping reductions to services over the next three years.

The full-assembly meeting held on February 24 saw a vote of 46 to 15 in favour of passing the budget, made against a back drop of £47m of cuts being enforced by the government over the next four years.

Fiona Colley, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, was first to speak, as she delivered an outline of the proposed budget before the full assembly.

She said the council would weather the government’s cuts by identifying £37m in efficiency savings while finding £27m in new revenue.

“We cracked down on waste and struck down on people refusing to pay council tax and business rates,” she said.

She added that the ruling Labour party “would reduce the cuts” if they could, and emphasised that they would “spend

every penny as if it were our own”.

But she said that this year the council would “reluctantly” have to raise it by two per cent. This is due to a new demand by central government that all councils in Britain raise their tax by two per cent to pay for adult social care services. The two per cent hike, which has been labelled the “adult social care precept” is expected to raise £1.7m in top of the £80m spent on it last year.

Council tax has been frozen in Southwark since 2008, and she said that the council was charging less than it did 20 years ago.

She told the full assembly she felt “confident” the budget would still protect the council’s most important services and “deliver a fairer future” for Southwark’s residents.

Reduced street cleaning LABOUR AND Liberal Democrat councillors from across the borough clashed last week over proposals to axe spending on environmental services.

The full-assembly meeting in Tooley Street on February 24 set out the council’s budget for 2016-2017, but was set against incoming government cuts of £47m spread over the next four years.

Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance, laid out plans to save £7.1m from environmental services over three years – having spent £69m on the department last year.

A plan to scrap overnight streetcleaning across the borough was among the options in the council’s hand. But a decision was made to keep the service after disputes between the two parties.

Cllr Colley said: “We know how much Southwark residents value our clean streets, and we’ll do all we can to keep standards high.” She also called the amendment to keep overnight cleaning “excellent news”.

to be saved by getting rid of management staff, while £50,000 is expected be made after a “review” of its staff structure.

There will also be reduced opening hours at recycling centres, and reduced hours of late litter collection in the borough’s parks.

Meanwhile the Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson, Rosie Shimell’s speech at the meeting condemned the plans, while pointing out that Southwark had the worst record for fly-tipping of all the innercity boroughs.

She said the environment was one of the “most crucial” things a council can influence, and that residents would realise the council had “got something wrong” if they woke up each morning to find rubbish on their streets.

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Shimell added: “It’s short-sighted to save money this year by cutting cleaning services. The Council will just end up having to find more money in the long-run to clean up the mess from more fly-tipping, more dumping and reduced recycling.”

Youth services get a last-minute reprieve Users of Mint Street Adventure Playground protested last December

YOUTH SERVICES across the borough received a last-minute reprieve last week as Southwark Council “identified” an extra £1m to its proposed budget – although there have been accusations that the funding cut is still too extreme and that those affected are being left in the dark.

After passing through the amendment at the eleventh hour, which came about after the council amended the amount of money it expected to receive from business rates, the council declared that Southwark would not lose any of its youth or play sites - although the adventure playground in Burgess Park will be replaced with a new facility funded by a £2m capital investment.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, added that the council had managed to achieve 50% savings with only a 10% reduction in front line services – although employees at youth facilities will now be squeezed in order to increase productivity.

Councillor Victoria Mills said: “I’m proud that despite the huge budget cuts we have endured over several years, Southwark Council has managed to maintain an excellent offer for young people, with a healthy budget.

“By working closely with the voluntary sector to reshape services, rethinking the way we staff our facilities, and maximising our income from the regeneration taking place across the borough, we have made sure that Southwark’s young people will not lose any youth or play sites.”

However, users of some youth services told the News, as far as they were concerned, confusion still remained over each individual site.

Rebekah Bostan, who helped found the original playground at the Mint Street Adventure Playground, said there was still “a lot of uncertainty” over the situation.

She said: “Obviously we’re really grateful the council has decided against across the board cuts and to instead work with the service users. But until we are spoken to we don’t know where we stand. We may have three play workers or two play workers or one. We have a lot of uncertainty still. I would say its cautious optimism at this stage.”

Southwark Lib Dem also qualified their support for the draft proposal.

Councillor James Okosun, the group’s youth spokesperson, said: “Labour’s last-minute change of heart on youth service funding is a welcome step in the right direction. The fight against the cuts by young people, the voluntary sector and Liberal Democrats over the past few months has clearly hit home.

Southwark Youth Council's campaign has been amazing.

“But our youth services are still facing a 50% funding cut even under Labour’s new plans and this is far more than any other council service. This is not fair and that’s why the Liberal Democrats put forward proposals for a more modest 25% funding reduction over three years.”

He added that the cuts would lead to more teenage pregnancies, more sexually transmitted infections and more people becoming involved with gangs.

In response, Cllr Mills said: “While we have managed to put extra money back into youth services by finding efficiencies, the Lib Dems proposed raiding the council’s contingency fund, which is financially risky and incredibly irresponsible. We believe we have found a good compromise which delivers necessary savings while minimising the impact on services. It is disappointing that the Lib Dems voted to block this additional funding for young people.”

PLANS TO redevelop Peckham Rye Station received unanimous approval from Southwark Council’s Planning Committee last night, despite many details remaining undecided.

The decision means the Station’s arcades, which house several independent businesses, will be demolished in favour of an open square at the station’s approach.

The designs, submitted by Landholt and Brown Architects, includes a twostorey extension to the 2-10 Blenheim Grove building. Spaces for a restaurant, office spaces, a takeaway, and public toilets are also in the plans.

Liberal Democrat councillor Adele Morris, a member of the planning committee whose members approved

the plans, said she could sense a great amount of unhappiness from residents.

“In the end we all agreed and gave it a unanimous vote, but residents were unhappy with how the consultation had been carried out,” Cllr Morris said.

“The planning process was supposed to be ‘co-design’ between residents and the council, but it was clear a lot of people felt the ‘co’ element hadn’t been fulfilled.

“There was a lot of dispute over details like whether to have potted trees or planted trees, for example. So clearly there needs to be some fine tuning.

“You’re never going to please everyone, but I really hadn’t expected this level of objection. Certainly there are points about the co-design process that the council needs to review.”

Among the locals to voice their

disappointment with the lack of public consultation was Eileen Conn of Peckham Vision.

She complained that the planning process had been “un-transparent” and that changes to the plans had been made within days of the public consultation ending on February 19.

“There were 96 documents on the council’s website for the public to sift through, with no guidance on how to find key information,” Eileen said.

Among the businesses destined to be kicked out of the arcades are the Chinese and Japanese food bar, Steamer, and the Food Base grocery shop.

Steamer’s manager Qin He, 25, said she had only recently heard about the plans, despite opening ten months ago.

“It was a shock,” she said.

“I worry that after it’s done, the businesses that move in will be

Starbucks and big chains. It’s only fair that local people should have priority.

And it would be impossible for us to start a business o u t s i d e Peckham.”

Food Base manager Shahid Butt, 31, said: “The council hasn’t spoken to us about it since last year, but I told them it would mean we have to relocate and that would kill our business.”

RTA victim named

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: An elderly woman whodied at the roundabout has been named as 86year-old Johanna Hedger.

Ms Hedger was in collision with a lorry on February 5 at the junction between the roundabout and Old Kent Road at midday.

An Air Ambulance landed at the roundabout, but paramedics were unable to save her life and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 53-year-old male driver of the lorry that hit Ms Hedger stopped and got out immediately, and was arrested and released on bail until a date in May. Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle wrote to Transport for London (TFL) shortly after the fatal incident demanding a safety review into the roundabout.

“I‘ve had multiple complaints about the safety of this site from pedestrians and cyclists,” said Mr Coyle, who had received a reply from TFL about the roundabout on the same day Ms Hedger was killed.

Nick Fairholme, director of projects for TFL, said: “Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the pedestrian who tragically died.”

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit continue to investigate and are appealing for information and witnesses to come forward and assist with their enquiries.

POP-UP POP PROTEST TO PROTECT PUB HERNE HILL

A POP-UP musical protest will take place in Herne Hill this weekend as a campaign against the decision to remove live music from the Half Moon Pub gains momentum.

The mini festival has been organised by campaigners who are desperate to keep the beloved venue’s music heritage, which includes live performances by bands including U2 and The Police, alive when it finally re-opens this summer.

The pub has been closed since a waist-high wave of water flooded the area in August 2014, when a faulty Thames Water pipe burst.

Campaigners to re-open the pub were initially pleased when brewers Fullers stepped in to renovate the damaged building, but their decision to convert the stage area into a kitchen and restaurant has been met with disgust by its long-term punters and live music fans.

Freeholders Dulwich Estates have also incurred the wrath of campaigners by pushing to remove the venue’s Asset of Community Status, which would make it easier to carry out the conversion.

Giles Gibson, chair of the Herne Hill Forum, said: “The Half Moon Pub was a long-standing and much-loved music venue which attracted people

from across London. This decision is appalling and a major blow to the local area. Dulwich Estate need to rethink what they are doing to our traders and local businesses.”

the iconic theme tune for smash TV show The Sopranos, will perform at the protest gig, which will also be attended by mayoral candidates Sian Berry and Caroline Pidgeon.

THE THOUSANDS of Southwark-based companies should come together to discuss the forthcoming EU referendum, a leading businessman has said.

Richard Kalmar (pictured), the chair of the borough’s Chamber of Commerce – a forum for businesses big and small from across Southwark – believes a discussion is needed on what consequences a vote to leave the EU could bring.

Mr Kalmar, the managing director of KALMARs residential and commercial estate agents, told the News that the chamber’s board members would like to host a conference on the issue.

“The decision to leave the EU could have a huge number of consequences for local businesses,” said Mr Kalmar, who has lived in the borough for fifteen years, and whose company is based off Tooley Street.

“We are aiming to hold a conference shortly after the mayoral election, mostly likely on May 19 or 26.

“We want to invite representatives of any interested local businesses and we want to have a panel with speakers from both the ‘In’ and

Child protected from genital mutilation

A SOUTHWARK child has been temporarily protected from female genital mutilation (FGM) after a High Court judge supported Southwark Council’s effort to bar her from the leaving the country.

A shocking study released last year revealed that nearly one-in-20 women in the borough are thought to have undergone FGM - the highest percentage in England and Wales. It also estimated that over ten per cent of women in the borough were born to a mother who has undergone the horrific ordeal.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Schools, said: “Southwark Council prioritises the safety of children in our borough above all else, and we will use every power at our disposal to protect children from harm. FGM has no place in Southwark..”

East Street with a Latin flavour A FLAVOUR of Latin America is set to arrive at Walworth’s East Street with the opening of a café with arts and business centres, run by the organisers of Carnaval del Pueblo.

Traders at the market told the News they had heard rumours of a new development, but now the paper can reveal artists’ impressions of how the new “enterprise hub” will look.

Nuala Riddle-Morales, 57, who runs the annual celebration in Burgess Park, said she can’t wait to take the reins of the new East Street development.

“It’s going to be beautiful. East Street is going to be a new destination and I’m delighted to say all the traders in the market have been really supportive as well,” said Nuala, the Carnaval del Pueblo Association’s CEO. The Latin centre will be refurbished from three shop fronts within a group of twelve units called Pilton Place, owned by Peabody housing association.

Peckham’s BMXers set for summer’s Olympic Games

TWO PECKHAM lads looks set to make Britain’s BMXing team for this summer’s Olympic Games, after years of grinding and hard work at Burgess Park.

Nineteen-year-old Quillan Isador and Tre Whyte, 22, are among the four most hotly tipped BMX racers in the country, and are currently training in Manchester.

The boys’ former coach, Michael Pulis MBE, who founded the Peckham BMX Club in 2003, believes they will soon be packing their bags for Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Tre, who went to Peckham Academy and Orpington College, told the News he was “nervous but excited” by the prospect of representing Britain.

“There’s a few races to go, I have three world cups and one world championship to go before I know I’ve made it. But right now I’m number three, so I’m nervous but the Olympics are very much the sole part of my plans for this year,” Tre said.

“I started getting into BMX when I was at school, rather than going to parties, and when I started to train harder I

started seeing progress and started winning.

“I have been living in Manchester now for five years where I practice five days a week. It’s a big commitment.

“I am also going to Brazil in the next few weeks to practice on the Olympic track. I’d say I’m nervous because I was injured for a lot of last season, and missed a few events.

“I’m well placed to make it, but I have less points that I could have.”

Michael, 42, also known as CK Flash in his DJing career, said: “We have six other guys who are on the Olympic programme, but Team GB have always had their eyes on them. And we have two girls at the club who are ranked among the highest in the world.

“Quillan and Tre both started BMXing in 2003 when we first set up the club.

They have been training with us for a long time and are still very much a part of the club”.

Last week the News reported that Michael had received an MBE medal at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

He was given the award for his contribution to south London’s youth services in recognition for his work in running the Peckham BMX Club.

New Care Home

SOUTHWARK’S PLANS for a specialist dementia centre took another step forward this week when the council released more details on the proposed site in Cator Street, Peckham.

Following an assessment it was decided that the new centre would not be suitable for the Resource and Education Centre building, which was due to be refurbished, but would instead be housed in a brand new facility on the same street.

The plans will see the first 42 units ready for new residents in August 2016, with the day centre and a further 38 extra care units due for completion exactly two years later.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion said: “Improving our offer to people with dementia and their families is the core driving force behind our new specialist centre. I am delighted to announce that our newer and more ambitious plans will include a brand new day centre building to replace existing centres at Lordship Lane and Southwark Park Road, as well as 80 vital extra care flats for residents in need of assisted living support.

“We are also looking into the possibilities of other complimentary services that might be able to share the site. All of which I believe will create a better and more responsive caring environment for those in our borough who need it most.”

Police resources for tackling crime a worry

REMAIN concerned about the resources available to Southwark police to tackle local crime.

Knife crime remains problematic and, sadly, I’ve learnt that the police are no closer to convicting the killer of 16 year old Mohammed Dura-Ray, who was murdered so brutally in Walworth last September. The CPS have handled the case badly and let Mo’s mum, Mariama, down. I’ve taken Mariama to meet Ministers and have raised Mo’s death in the Commons – including yesterday directly to the Prime Minister. I hope the Government will roll back on police cuts and ensure our local police force has the resources needed to keep our community safe.

It has been an incredibly busy time. My first question to the Prime Minister was an experience, especially as the Commons is so much busier for PMQs. Last week also saw the Government publish new regulations to deliver an amendment I tabled to the Welfare Bill.

This legislative change will help dying people get extra help from the Department for Work and Pensions and will be implemented from April. It is incredible to think I have helped change the law within a year of entering Parliament despite being in Opposition. I thank everyone in Bermondsey and Old Southwark once again for giving me the opportunity to represent you in the Commons to try and make a difference.

I should also be responding at the Despatch Box for Labour for the first time on Friday. I help cover the Leader of the House (parliamentary business) brief and should speak on a Private Members’ Bill. I hope one day to be able to speak at the Despatch Box for our community from the Government benches for Labour. It would give me far greater chance to make a positive difference.

THANK GAWD for the article by Joey Millar to open up the whole situation about the regeneration

by Renewal, (‘Revealed: Millwall’s regeneration plans, February 25th 2016).

I would just like to know why has the whole thing been conducted in such secrecy? I knew what was going to happen at the end of the day. In the article it states: "Renewal has spent over ten years working with the council" - that's a long time to develop close relationships with people. Pity they didn't see fit to do that with Millwall. Or as it comes to light, other people who stand in their way for the development of the area.

The plain facts are they want to do everything behind "closed doors".

Let's face the truth: I was born and brought up in Peckham during the ‘50s, where you played as a nipper was on bomb sites left over from the second World War. There was no interest from property sharks to develop the land for working people.

But let's get back to reality, Millwall has been under the cosh before and survived and we will again.

‘Intentionally homeless’ for having rent arrears?

WE ARE deeply saddened to hear of the eviction Faysal Abdirahman and his family by Southwark Council (‘Council stands by decision to evict Imam and seven kids, February 25th 2016).

Like many Southwark residents, we are disgusted by Southwark's treatment of vulnerable homeless people and their use of bailiffs and police to terrorise our communities. We know from reports and photos that the police and bailiff presence was well over 50 people that day. We are also concerned that Cllr Livingstone's comments are misleading and insulting when he states that because the family were in rent arrears they are therefore legally

News page 3 'intentionally homeless'. This is an incredibly dangerous and irresponsible statement from him.

The disastrous combination of welfare and housing benefit cuts, low wages, and rising rents means that more and more people are falling into rent arrears and threatened with homelessness. Having rent arrears does not necessarily mean you are 'intentionally homeless' in homelessness law. As the term suggests, for someone to be deemed 'intentionally homeless' there must be a deliberate act or deliberate lack of action that resulted in the person's homelessness. For example, deciding one day not to pay the rent even though you have the money to could be deemed making yourself intentionally homeless - this is very rarely the case. The reality is often that people fall into rent arrears because they simply do not have the money to cover the rent. This does not make you intentionally homeless.

Secondly, Livingstone states that after finding the family 'intentionally homeless', the council had no duty to provide them with housing any longer, however homelessness law states that the council must give a reasonable amount of time for them to find alternative accommodation. As the family have been unable to secure an alternative, clearly, the time given by the council was not reasonable.

Clear your dog’s mess up off footpaths!

I HAVE noticed an increase of dogs being allowed to foul on the pavements and footpaths around the area of Canada Water.

It has to be one of the most disgusting sights to come across and it’s increasing at an alarming rate.

Everywhere you care to walk nearby to Surrey Quays Road, including the open space outside the library, you come across the offensive mess. It is utterly disgusting.

The problem lies with the dog

owners themselves. They should act responsibly and clear their own dog’s mess up. The street cleaners should not be expected to deal with this antisocial problem and it’s more noticeable that the dogs mess now appears to be left where it is until it disappears naturally. Naturally meaning with the help of rain or if you are unfortunate enough to walk through it! Totally disgusting.

Clear message to dog owners in the area - clean your own dog’s mess PLEASE. Thank you.

Canada Water positive

I FEEL that your article “Shock for Rotherhithe residents as £2bn Canada Water plan is unveiled”, 11 February, mistook the views of a small number of Rotherhithe residents for the majority’s.

The same vocal minority followed up with a letter in your paper the following week (“No shared vision at Canada Water”), and I feel that someone now needs to redress the balance.

I was not in the least “shocked” at seeing British Land’s masterplan for the area, and I struggle to see how anyone can have been, as it is exactly what has been trailed in a long series of consultations. More to the point, it’s precisely the kind of forward-looking and high-quality development that the area sorely needs, bringing among other benefits: new public spaces, including a new park (which will more than compensate for the trees felled to make way for a new leisure centre); new restaurants and shops; better pedestrian and cycling routes; and lots of new sorely-needed housing. It is, in short, exactly the kind of regeneration I hoped to see come to Rotherhithe when I moved to the area a decade ago.

I am a fan of Andie Byrne’s informative blog about the history of Rotherhithe, so I hope that, rather than leaving the area as she threatens, she instead sticks around to see the regeneration take place. I’m sure that in time she will see what a vast improvement it will bring.

T’S RARE that a month goes by when we don’t see or hear of a health campaign encouraging us to spot and seek advice on symptoms of a range of illnesses.

It can feel overwhelming and some people might feel they are wasting their GP’s time by getting these symptoms checked out – I can assure you, you are not. Knowing and acting on the early warning signs of conditions like cancer, diabetes or mental illness really does result in more people seeking advice and receiving successful treatment.

The results from the 2013 Public Health England ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign for bladder and kidney cancer show that around 18% more people visited their GP when they noticed the most common symptom of blood in their pee. As a result, diagnoses of bladder cancer increased by 8% and for kidney cancer by 22%. It is thought that this early detection may have saved as many as 90 lives.

It is really encouraging to see that, when armed with the right information, people are taking charge of their own health and getting symptoms investigated early. With such strong evidence of the success of this NHS initiative, it’s no surprise that the ‘blood in your pee’ campaign has relaunched this month.

Blood in your urine is the most common symptom of both bladder and kidney cancer. If you notice any blood in your pee, even if it is just once, please tell your doctor straight away. The chances are that it is nothing serious, but these cancers are more treatable if they are found early.

Other symptoms that should not be ignored include pain below the ribs that doesn’t go away, any swelling of your abdomen, needing to pee very often or very suddenly and pain while peeing. There are lots of other causes of these symptoms – most often a simple infection or kidney or bladder stone, which can all be effectively treated. So if you have symptoms like this make sure you see your GP and don’t try and diagnose yourself.

We can all make lifestyle changes that will reduce our risk of cancer. If you’re a smoker, then quitting is the best thing you can do to improve your health. You can also increase your chances of avoiding cancer by eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, limiting your alcohol intake, keeping active and maintaining a healthy weight. Don’t ignore the symptoms and look before you flush when going to the toilet. If you don’t check, you may not notice blood in your pee. If you’re concerned, go and see your GP. A nose for the spectacular

THE CYRANO de Bergerac is everything a man could want to be, and more: poet, scholar, warrior and leader. And yet the one thing he really wants is the one thing he can't have - the beautiful Roxane. For as magnificent as he is, he is not as magnificent as his nose, writes Matt Baker...

Many of you will be familiar with the plot after watching a certain Steve Martin memorably bring the role in to the Eighties in the classic comedy. The version on offer at The Southwark Playhouse is closer to the French original and offers more in the way of depth and substance.

is exceptional as Cyrano de Bergerac, and is wonderfully supported by a superb all female cast. From the start the audience was on board and laughing wildly. The dialogue crackles and the pace is frenetic. We instantly fall for the main characters and become invested in both Cyrano and Roxane, who lead us on a difficult and tragic journey. There were moments of genuine sadness where you feel the audience gasp with grief, and this is a tribute to the cast who steer the performance from hilarious farce to gut wrenching tragedy seamlessly.

IT WAS a giant memento hidden from the public eye, sat unappreciated under Peckham’s noses for more than 50 years, writes Owen Sheppard...

But a small fellowship of architects and historians are now on the cusp of returning the Grade Two-listed 1930s relic back to its regal old self.

Feast your eyes on Peckham Rye Station’s south-wing Old Waiting Room and South Stair – soon to be given a new lease of life.

The Old Waiting Room sits inconspicuously on the Victorian station’s second floor, directly above the ticket hall and first floor passages to the platforms.

It is only accessible via Platform Three, where architect Benedict O’Looney, Benny to his friends, says he catches people peeking through the windows and catching a glimpse of the huge room for the first time. In its day it could be reached by two old stairwells which flank the station’s current day main entrance.

It may be hard to imagine now, with trains passing frequently and many choosing to wait on the

platform, but the grand Old Waiting Room could have housed well over 100 travelers, with 20 or 30 staff.

“They built this huge room as they expected so many people to waiting here,” Benny says.

“It goes back to when two major lines: the London to Dover line and the London to Brighton, both converged on the 150-year-old station’s north and south platforms respectively, marking out Peckham as a vital junction.

“You would also get trains to Crystal Palace, which in its day was of course a huge tourist attraction.”

The Waiting Room and stairwell were both the products of Charles Henry Driver, also the architect of Denmark Hill and Battersea Park, plus a number of the great pumping stations built London’s sewage system.

“It was even used as a ballet hall and for a few events. But in 1961 they decided to demolish the old timber platforms One and Two to the extra island platform, and this room had its windows all bricked up and left to decay,” Benny says.

“So years later in 2013 my friends and I who are very interested in architecture realised there must be a space in here, and we said we had to get in here and see what it’s like.

“Eileen Conn of Peckham Vision helped us set up the Rye Lane and Station Action Group and we started to draw a lot of attention to

Peckham Rye. “I started to learn as much about the architecture as I could and we thought we should do something with this room. After all we should be celebrating these buildings.”

In collaboration with the action group secured a £30,000 grant with the Peckham Programme to get the windows unblocked on the

north side and restore them. They then had a series of holes repaired in the north stairwell.

Meanwhile Network Rail are said to be looking for a lease holder to take up the ground floor, with the hope of it being turned into a restaurant.

“We want to pitch to Network Rail to let this become a public space,” said Benny. “We also would like to arrange for an exhibition on Henry Driver to be held”.

Most significantly of all, Benny says, will be a celebration of Rye Station’s 150th anniversary on August 13.

Winkworth expects an improved housing market in 2016

D

espite the unexpectedly clearcut election outcome in May, the anticipated bounce in the housing market has been late to materialise in 2015, with the sales market being particularly slow in prime central London.

We believe, however, that while concerns around the General Election limited transactions, particularly at the upper end of the market, a large part of the slowdown can be attributed to the stamp duty changes introduced in the latter part of 2014, which saw a significant rise in the tax for properties above £900,000.

Transactions below this threshold have been more buoyant, particularly as interest rates have remained low and mortgage lending has increased.

Moving into 2016 we expect market conditions to be similar, with stamp duty undermining demand for more expensive properties but low mortgage rates and wage inflation adding momentum at the lower end of the market.

Central London Our expectation is that central London will continue to be affected by higher stamp duty, with buyers taking this cost into account when considering what they are prepared to pay per sq. ft. We believe, however, that this added burden will be

progressively absorbed over the course of 2016 - albeit with fewer transactions with the changes having little impact from 2017 onwards.

While this adjustment is taking place, we expect there will be a divide in the behaviour of domestic buyers and international investors. Domestic needs such as upsizing and proximity to schools and work will mean that residents will be forced to accept this cost or move further afield, whereas international property investors may wait until costs are more favourable to them. This is supported by the latest research from our Knightsbridge and Chelsea office, which shows that 81% of recent enquiries have been from domestic buyers.

Further headwinds for international buyers are the strengthening pound, particularly for European buyers, changes to the nondom status and increases in capital gains tax.

Demand for flats under £2 million should see the greatest demand and we foresee the price of these growing by 2% compared to a flat market for both flats and houses above this threshold.

Greater London With the mortgage market remaining competitive and employment figures improving, we envisage that the Greater London property market will see price increases moving into 2016, particularly with a

positive impact from lower stamp duty on properties below £1 million.

We expect price growth of around 6% for flats while house prices, most of which are priced above £1 million, may rise by a more steady 3%.

Country With the election out of the way, we expect that interest will resume in a move to the country to take advantage of the record price gap with London.

The core market below £1 million will be the strongest performer in this market.

Again, low mortgage rates will play a role in encouraging those in the country to move up the ladder or take their first step onto it. As such we expect price growth of around 5% in the country market in 2016.

London Rentals The private rental sector now represents 30% of the London property market and we expect rentals to continue to grow in importance, with a shortage of supply underpinning prices. We anticipate steady growth of 3-4% in the

price of Greater London rentals, slightly above wage inflation. This will be supported by a reduction in supply as some landlords sell off secondary letting properties and consolidate their portfolios to offset the increased costs from the changes to tax allowances announced in the last Budget, as the buy-to-let sector remains on the government agenda affecting sentiment to invest.

In prime central London, prices will continue to be affected by the decline in demand that has troubled the area for the past two years, as tenants look for better value for money in zone two and beyond. Indeed, Winkworth’s Corporate Services department has noticed a considerable number of searches in these locations rather than the usual request for a prime central London rental. As such, we anticipate that prices will plateau with 0% growth.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Thames Water service pipe repair works to be carried out, intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Belvedere Buildings, between King James Street and Southwark Bridge Road.

The alternative route, Belvedere Buildings (Northbound only section), Webber Street, Great Suffolk Street and Southwark Bridge Road, or as indicated by the traffic signs displayed.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

AN INJURY time penalty ensured Hamlet picked up a vital point against promotion rivals East Thurrock United at Champion Hill on Saturday.

The 2-2 draw will have felt like a win to many Pink and Blue supporters because as the game went into the final minute of normal time Dulwich were two goals down and seemingly going away with nothing.

But Nyren Clunis netted just as

the clock ticked to ninety minutes to throw the home side a lifeline and in the fourth minute of injury time Hamlet got a penalty.

Initially it appeared the referee had missed the handball that pushed Mitchell Nelson’s header onto the bar, but after consulting with the linesman the spot kick was awarded and Thurrock’s Sammy Knott got his marching orders.

Lengthy protests from the visitors

delayed the taking of the spot kick, but Ashley Carew kept his nerve to ensure that the points were ultimately shared.

East Thurrock could have gone top of the Ryman Premier League with a win, and they will wonder how goals from Sam Higgins and Tom Wraight didn’t result in all three points but they are still very much in the title mix.

Hamlet’s disappointing league form in February, just one win in

five games, means they are outsiders for top spot and the sole automatic promotion place.

Instead they will hope that this month sees their poor recent form pick up to enable them to secure at the bare minimum a shot at promotion through the play-offs.

The first of their last eleven league games of the season comes this Saturday when Hamlet travel to mid-table Wingate and Finchley for a 3pm kick off.

A LATE penalty save from Stansfeld stopper James Bradley ensured the Bermondsey side picked up three points on Saturday.

With Stansfeld 3-2 up going into the final minutes Guru Nanak striker Tommy Vine has a chance to level things up and although he sent Bradley the wrong way, but the

THREE SOUTHWARK Legends basketball players hit double figures as the U18 side won its sixth game in a row with a 70-43 victory over visiting Brent Ballers on Saturday.

Fisher have just eight league games left of their season with five of those taking place at Champion Hill, the ground they share with Dulwich Hamlet.

They are due to move back to Rotherhithe, to St Paul’s playing field on Salter Road, during the close season which will end a twelve-year residency, initially moving as Fisher Athletic before reforming as Fisher FC in 2009, in the south of the borough.

The first of those five home league contests takes place this Saturday against Ashford United, a game that gets underway at 3pm.

THREE FISHER ABC boxers are bidding for English Junior ABA crowns after the competition got underway over the weekend.

Paddy Connors, fourteen, boxed at under 44kg and come through his south-east London eliminator to ensure he will fight in the next round of the competition.

Club coach Steve Hiser said: “He boxed well against an opponent who was much taller than him and he impressed everybody with his showing.”

Michael Burke had to box twice to come out of the south east London section, first of all winning on Saturday before coming through, on a unanimous points verdict, against John Dibsdall of Nemesis ABC Hiser added: “The second fight was rather thrown at us at the last minute, but he done really well.

He has all the talent, but boxing is not just about that.

“I would like to see him do more in the gym to make sure he is always at his best when he fights.”

Caroline Dubois, fifteen, who boxes at under 57kg is also entered into the competition but she will not box until the regionals stages of the competition due to the number of entrants in her weight category.

MILLWALL STRETCHED their unbeaten run away from home to six games in all competitions after a 1-1 draw with Doncaster last Saturday.

The Lions went ahead through Steve Morison’s thirteenth goal of the season after just six minutes, but former Millwall midfielder Richard Chaplow equalised eight minutes before the break.

That gave Doncaster, winless in seven before the fixture, the belief to go in search of a winner, and they came close in added time when Jordan Archer had to stretch out a leg to divert Conor Grant’s close-range shot away for a corner.

“It was a good save,” boss Neil Harris admitted. “I thought for all our discipline ad organisation and our work ethic we almost got punished for a slight error of judgement in our positional play.

“But it was a good save and when you want to be a good side you have to rely on one to eleven. I thought we were a reliable outfit on Saturday but then we needed our goalkeeper, and he stepped up.”

Centre-back Byron Webster believes the point at the Keepmoat Stadium against Darren Ferguson’s side could prove to be a valuable one.

“There was a little bit of frustration but I think in the end a point was a fair result,” Webster said. “We’re on a good run so we expect from ourselves to win every game, which is a good thing.

“So there was a little bit of disappointment but looking back it could be a good point for us.

“It’s an old cliché, isn’t it, but you just try to win every game. I’ve never gotten into stats or (how many points) we need.

“We know as players if you win every game you’ll be there. That’s how we’ve set our targets.”

WHETHER OR not Millwall are in a play-off final at the end of May, Jed Wallace will already be on his holidays.

He usually enjoys a quick break in Greece or Spain as soon as the season ends, and for the last two years has spent two weeks in the Dominican Republic in a house owned by his friend’s parents.

It’ll be different this summer as he has plans to catch up with Callum Cobb, a childhood friend currently pursuing sporting and academic goals at the University of Rio Grande in Ohio.

After Tuesday night’s draw with Wigan at The Den failed to cut the gap to the automatic promotion places it is

beginning the look more probable that to reach the Championship Millwall will have to take the play-off route.

With his loan ending on April 9, Wallace will be a Lions supporter if that happens.

“Everyone’s dream is to play at Wembley,” Wallace admits. “I’m hoping Millwall don’t have to but the likelihood is at the moment the playoffs and then hopefully the boys will be going to Wembley.

“Depending on the date I’ll either be in the stand supporting them or I’ll be watching them from a sports bar in Miami with a Corona cheering them on. Hopefully the latter if I’m being honest!”

By that stage Wallace hopes to have been involved again with the Wolves squad. He spoke to George Saville about his experiences on loan at Millwall earlier in the season when a productive spell in Neil Harris’ team did what Wolves boss Kenny Jackett

hoped it would and brought him up to the level required of a Championship midfielder.

Saville scored his first two goals for Wolves last weekend in their 2-1 win over Derby County. Wallace and Saville get on well and live close to one another in Wolverhampton and the image of Saville celebrating is something Wallace wants to emulate.

“I spoke to him after the game and he said he didn’t really know where it came from,” Wallace said. “But I’m delighted for him, he’s a great lad. He only lives five minutes from me “He’s a top fella and was very popular here as well. For me now that’s something that I could see myself doing. Sav came here and did well and then he’s gone back and is making an impact now.

“It’s nice for me to be part of a good team here at the moment. But Wolves is at the forefront of my mind and doing well there.

“I’m not sure about this season but I’d like to be really involved at the start of next season, come back to preseason fit and injury-free and wanting to make an impact there.

“To come here for me was perfect and I feel like I’ve had a really positive effect on the team and I’ve just really enjoyed it.”

The success last weekend of Saville is also something of an endorsement for the work of Harris and his coaching staff. Wallace settled in immediately on and off the pitch, and he speaks about Harris in glowing terms.

“The manager’s good here, the staff are good, there’s a great group and I’ve really enjoyed it,” Wallace insisted. “The manager is someone I would want to work for in five years’ time if he’s here or somewhere else.

“He’s as honest as the day is long and I think I’m an honest player so it’s a good relationship.”

Lions youth success catching the eye

NEIL Harris isn’t worried about Millwall’s current youth success attracting the attention of the bigger clubs.

Christian Mbulu became the fourteenth player to feature in a firstteam matchday squad this season after coming through the U21s when he was named on the bench against Doncaster last weekend.

Reports last week linked Chelsea with a move for nineteen-year-old Mbulu, though a source close to the

player told the News the centre-back wants to continue his development at Millwall.

And Harris is determined to continue calling up players schooled in the Millwall system.

“We want to use our young players,” The Lions boss said. “You can’t use them all the time. You can’t put players in when they’re not ready and you have to take them out when they have a little dip in form.

“But we’ve seen huge benefits this year of having a younger squad and putting our faith in young players.

“There’s a balance to get right

between senior players and youngsters. I think we’ve got it right the majority of times this year, but there have been times when I’ve got it wrong.

“Let’s not forget what we’re trying to achieve at this club. Yes, we’re trying to get back into the Championship and we’d love it to be this year. But we’ve got a long-term strategy and we want to sustain quality and ambition with our own players.

“We’ve had a lot of young players that have been involved and that’s really important for us.”

Harris said he had no worries about

“We felt it was a good time to introduce him to the first-team fold just to give him a taste of the experience.

“He’s progressed really well but he has a long way to go.

“We look at Christian along with the other first-year pros as our long-term future.

Byron Webster and Ed Upson were teammates at Yeovil when they won automatic promotion

IF THINGS don’t go well for Byron Webster this weekend, he can expect to receive a long-distance phone call.

It’ll be from his younger brother, Jack, who lives in Australia. And he’ll want all the latest news from his big brother from the afternoon’s result against Blackpool.

“After every game we’re on Facetime,” Webster explains. “He’ll be ringing me and asking me, ‘What’s happened there?’, or, ‘Why haven’t you scored?’”

“We’re a close-knit family, we’ve always supported each other.”

Football is ingrained in the family.

Webster’s father, Billy, was once on the books at Huddersfield Town, while another younger brother, 26-year-old Ben, played with York.

Just over a year ago all the curiosity was directed the other way. Jack, 25, was involved in one of the biggest games in the history of Bentleigh Greens, a club based in the Melbourne suburbs and playing in Australia’s second tier, below the A-League.

They had reached the semi-finals of

the FFA Cup, the Australian equivalent of the FA Cup. Their clash with Perth Glory made headlines around the country, and the presence of former Millwall attacker Andy Keogh only added to the fairytale narrative surrounding the fixture in November, 2014.

Webster explains: “My brother was at Scunthorpe with him and he cleaned his boots. They made a big thing about that in Australia, playing against him in a big cup game after cleaning his boots!”

Bentley Greens lost 3-0 but that disappointment didn’t diminish the two younger brothers’ affection for their adopted country. Jack has been there a number of years and Ben is trying to get a visa to extend his stay.

That’ll mean catching up will have to continue online and recently conversations have been more and more about the possibility of Millwall winning promotion.

It’s nothing new for the Webster family, as Byron has experienced it all before with unfancied Yeovil Town who went up through the League One playoffs in 2013.

Ed Upson was a teammate then, and though expectations are arguably slightly higher at Millwall, it was Billy Webster who in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw at Doncaster was pointing out the parallels between his son’s current side and his previous one.

“A lot of it reminds me of here,”

“We know teams might have more possession against us but we’ve got our shape set up to go and counterattack or to go and get the ball and score. Teams then have to try and break us down and they leave spaces open.

“That learning is down to the players and also the management who have thought that maybe we can’t be so reckless and naïve, we have to get the result in whatever way.

“Teams we’ve played against might have had 55 per cent possession against us but we’ve still got the win. The main stat is the one at the top of the page – who has scored the most goals.”

Webster says there is a closeness among the current group of players Lions boss Neil Harris has assembled.

The 28-year-old has plenty in common with Barnsley-born centre-back partner Mark Beevers and Lee Gregory, who grew up in Sheffield.

He explains: “Me and Beevs get on off the pitch as well as on it. In all teams, that spine of the side is important. The central midfielders have an understanding and the strikers, Moro (Steve Morison) and Gregs, have been playing a lot together. They’re scoring a lot of goals so they’ve obviously got an understanding.

“There’s a good group of northern lads but the whole squad are all together and enjoy each other’s company. There’s always a lot of banter flying about which helps in terms of team bonding and working hard for each other on a Saturday.”

That unity has been evident this season, even when results have dipped.

A top-six finish looks a real possibility, but Webster has the added motivation of trying to help the team to automatic promotion, which would free up some time for a family reunion Down Under.

“Every time I’ve wanted to go over football has got in there, or my little girl was born,” Webster says. “If we get to the play-offs it cuts the summer short again and I won’t be able to go over there.

“If we go up automatically we’ll obviously have a bit more time and I’ll be able to travel. But we’ll have to see.”

It would take an entire report to chronicle all the chances Millwall missed. In a brief press conference after the game Neil Harris was asked what his side could have done better and his reply was sharp: “Score.”

There was no more analysis needed. Harris’ side did everything right up until the point someone had to apply a finish, but more than 20 shots came and went and the scoreline remained blank.

The most gilt-edged fell to Steve Morison and Jed Wallace, though Joe Martin planted a header just the wrong side of the post late in the second half when he seemed certain to score.

As much as Millwall were wasteful, Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Wigan goal was magnificent, defying his own well-advanced years and a succession of Millwall players lining up to take pot shots at his goal.

The 66th minute brought a clutch of Millwall’s best chances to break the deadlock in a manic three-second spell. First Jaaskelainen came off his line to block Gregory’s shot and when the ball broke to Morison it seemed like he just had to lift the ball over the goalkeeper. But Morison undercooked it and Jaaskelainen saved again. The ball then squirted away to the right to Wallace but with two Wigan defenders desperately trying to get back on the line the winger blasted his shot over.

It felt so much like one of those nights.

If Jaaskelainen had already excelled himself, his save when he flung himself to his right to block Jimmy Abdou’s shot that appeared to be on its way into the net brought disbelieving gasps from the home crowd.

The stars – and results – had aligned to make this a crucial fixture in the season. Harris said in his programme notes there had been no “must-win” game yet, but in terms of the chances of a top-two finish the stakes are certainly getting higher and the margin for error lowering.

Wigan could have opened up a decisive lead over Millwall with a win, so maybe with that knowledge, and despite the eventual circumstances of this game, Harris will have been satisfied with a point.

It could and should have been so much more, especially given Wigan were down to ten men from the 34th minute, Sam Morsy receiving two yellow cards in the space of six minutes.

Instead, Jaaskelainen was the decisive participant, standing as an unbreakable last line of defence in Caldwell’s team.

It didn’t take long for the nature of the tactical battle to become obvious on Tuesday night. Wigan wanted to play the ball out from the back from Jaaskelainen through their defence,

as they had done in the 2-2 draw between the sides at the DW Stadium in September, but Millwall were wise to it, with Abdou and Ben Thompson pushing up to join Gregory and Morison in closing down space hoping to force the goalkeeper to clear it long. That required discipline and a high work rate and Millwall disrupted their opponents well, funnelling players back to the edge of the box when Wigan did get close to goal. Ryan Colclough and Conor McAleny tried a couple of long-range shots but dragged them well wide.

The front two also worked diligently to deny their opponents time, and Morsy’s red card was a direct consequence of that. The midfielder, who scored against Millwall for Chesterfield before joining Wigan in January, had already been booked for a foul on Wallace. And just six minutes later he evidently panicked after being closed down and then dispossessed

“We will certainly monitor him and welcome him back towards the end of the season. Hopefully he gets a little bit of luck and his recovery is good and he comes back and hits the ground running pre-season.”
