Alvaro Mendoza Sillerico, 28, of Rye Lane, was found guilty at the Old Bailey on Tuesday of murdering 39-year-old Juan Olmos-Saca.

Sillerico, also known as Uziel Mendez, was sentenced as the News was going to press on Wednesday.

Officers had launched an investigation after being called to a Rye Lane flat shared between Sillerico and Mr Olmos-Saca on January 29 2018.

Police found Mr Olmos-Saca barely conscious in a communal stairway suffering from a stab wound to the chest and he was rushed to a south London hospital.

However, he died as a result of the severe injuries on February 2. A post-mortem gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the heart.

The court heard that Sillerico had spent the evening drinking with friends in Camberwell before returning to the flat, where he was described by other occupants as “agitated.”

Sillerico claimed he had become intoxicated and pushed Mr Olmos-Saca down the stairs.

Sillerico was initially charged with attempted murder on Thursday, 1 February but was charged with murder following Juan’s death.

The other five were released with no further action.

Detective Chief Inspector John Massey, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “This violent death appears to have stemmed from a drunken argument which occurred at the flat where the two men lived. It is tragic that someone can lose their life in such a trivial way.

“Sillerico attacked Juan, leaving him fatally injured. It would appear that he alerted others some time later but provided a number of different, conflicting accounts of his actions that night to the other residents and police.

“I hope that today’s conviction provides some comfort to Juan’s family as they face a future without him.”

Councillors told a foreign government could have carried out a cyberattack

A FOREIGN government cyberattack could have been behind technical problems which saw residents unable to access the Southwark Council website, a council official has claimed.

A series of attempted cyberattacks – called distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks – saw the council’s website down for periods of time during November last year.

Responding to a question about recent technical difficulties on the site, Michael Scorer, the council’s strategic director of housing and modernisation, told councillors that the unsuccessful attacks last year could have come from a foreign state.

He said at an Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting last week: “It [the recent technical difficulties] was indirectly a follow-on from the cyber-attacks.

“If you want to know what the cyberattacks are, they’re called distributed denial of service

attacks. Actually there’s the possibility that it was from foreign governments that were doing it.”

He said that the “sheer volume” of the requests during the “seriously big attack” led council officials to believe the action was deliberate and targeted.

The officer added that it appeared “very deliberate” that they took place over the weekends when traffic to the council website was higher and lower staff levels meant fewer people could respond.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

A review of all the site’s security patches as a result of the unsuccessful attacks then caused some glitches with other parts of the site, Mr Scorer explained.

However, Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing and modernisation, reassured

councillors the attempted attacks did not compromise any of the council’s internal systems as the attacks “didn’t actually get into the [site’s] system.”

Contingency plans have also been put in place to prevent a repeat of the problem, she said.

A BERMONDSEY-BASED dance group are in the mix for a £50,000 prize, after making it to the final nine of BBC One’s prime-time competition, ‘The Greatest Dancer’.

Street dance group Prospects Fraternity will be appearing on the live-shows of the dancing competition on Saturday watched by millions of viewers in a bid to claim the cash prize – and the opportunity to perform on Strictly Come Dancing.

To get this far, the group – who practise at Harris Academy for Girls – had to win over 75 per cent of the audience in an initial audition, before being picked by one of the show’s three ‘dance captains’, who include Cheryl Cole.

If the talented thirteen win the ultimate prize, the money would go towards opening a dance studio in south London, possibly in Bermondsey, says its oldest member, eighteen-year-old Albie Lewington.

“When I wasn’t dancing, I was going down some dark roads”, he said. “The dancing, it’s helped me get out of that mind-set.

“[Setting up a studio] with the prize money, it’d help a lot of people in Southwark and in the community as well.

“Because I live in Southwark I’d be promoting it wherever I am too.”

The group, formed of dancers from all over the country around two years ago, ranges in age from ten to eighteenyears-old and now sees itself as one big family.

“I’m the oldest, so I feel like the older brother,” said Albie. “I feel like I’m responsible for all of them.

“We’ve only been a group for about two years but the bonds we’ve made in

that time, it’s like no other group I’ve been with.”

The dance act are working flat out to seize the top prize, rehearsing a “lot more” than their usual twelve hours to wow the audience, the show’s dance captains and viewers at home.

This is not the first taste of fame for teen street dancer Albie – he has previously appeared on the live shows for Britain’s Got Talent.

Despite the practice, the St James’s Road resident still has nerves about performing live on-air in front of millions of viewers.

The group is part of #MatthewSquad – meaning they are mentored on the show

“There’ll be three live shows throughout February, all with challenges based on themes. The first one is colour.”

MORE POLICE STATIONS TO CLOSE DESPITE CRIME WAVE

OUTRAGE HAS been caused by the announcement that Camberwell and Kennington police stations will close this March despite south London’s continuing violent crime wave.

In a letter dated January 21, the Central South Basic Command unit - the now fully merged Lambeth and Southwark Police - confirmed that both Camberwell and Kennington police stations will officially close on March 31, with their officers’ last working day expected to be March 15.

The dedicated ward officers for Camberwell will move to Peckham Station, with officers from Kennington moving to Brixton.

Shockingly, the hamstrung Camberwell team are now left scrabbling around to find some kind of ad-hoc base, with a caveat that they can’t and won’t pay any costs.

The letter goes on to say: “Where there isn’t a police building on or within close proximity to a DWO’s ward, we will look to work with partners to create additional space/hubs for them, to enable them to spend more time in the communities that they police.”

Speaking to the News on Monday, Chief Inspector Annmarie Cowley said: “We are absolutely acutely aware of the concerns raised by community members.

“Once we received the information we shared it with our partners as a matter of urgency. We are keen to explore any opportunities with the community and the Met’s property services department to

find a suitable place which officers can use in Camberwell as a base, for tea and toilet breaks and storing their personal items.”

Although Camberwell Police Station’s front counter has been closed since 2013, and Kennington’s since last year, officers have held regular community drop-in sessions at the counter on top of their ‘pop-up’ meet-and-greets around the borough.

The Mayor’s office for policing - which conducted a public consultation on the planned closures - says closing front counters means money can be invested into other areas - including online.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “Enforced savings mean that the Mayor has had to make some difficult decisions about how the Met works, but money saved from closing

front counters will be used to protect frontline policing as much as possible and there will continue to be two Dedicated Ward Officers per ward, as per his commitment.”

The SE5 Forum for Camberwell told the News the move would only worsen open drug taking, street drinking and antisocial behaviour, claiming people banned from the area already flout their orders knowing it is unlikely they will get caught.

Resident Amanda Kamin, told the News: “Southwark clearly needs a rethink of priorities and policing should be near the top.”

This view was echoed by Camberwell Green’s safer neighbourhood ward panel chair, Mark Webb, who said he was setting up a petition to ‘Save Our Service’.

HOUSING ACTIVISTS staged a demonstration at Southwark Council’s Tooley Street office after two domestic abuse survivors were told they are not ‘vulnerable’ enough to qualify for full homeless duty by the authority.

The protest on Thursday, January 17, was a last ditch attempt from Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL) to stop two women facing eviction from temporary accommodation from being left homeless.

The group has been critical of private housing offers made by the council’s housing team and has called on it to give both women - whose identities are being kept confidential - priority housing due to their circumstances.

Both women have been told they are not deemed to be ‘vulnerable’, and therefore do not qualify for full homeless duty - and permanent accommodation - from the council.

One of the women, whom the group is referring to as ‘L’, has already been evicted from her temporary accommodation and made homeless since the protest.

The council has offered L private accommodation, but HASL says taking it up means she cannot qualify for the council’s housing waiting list and her appeal would be stopped - leaving her in a catch-22. She described herself as being left a 'shell of a person' by the decision.

“Going through this process is not for the faint hearted. It is only through support from others that I have not had a breakdown.

surviving abuse, mental health and recovery from addiction and other issues," she said.

But the council’s housing chief, councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, told the News private accommodation could meet L's ‘immediate needs’.

“I have been in contact with the lady concerned, and am confident that the

council is doing everything we can to support her,” she explained to the News.

“We have been trying to help her move from a temporary hostel which is intended only for emergencies, into a more stable and permanent home, and have identified a number of properties in the private sector for her but she has refused all our offers of assistance.

“We also agreed that she can continue to bid for council housing, but unfortunately like most councils, we

simply don’t have a ready supply of council homes for everyone who would like them.

“Although we are building thousands more, we will always struggle to meet demand.

“We have to prioritise, and in this case we are confident the resident’s immediate needs can be best met in the private sector.”

Elizabeth Wyatt, from HASL, said the two cases highlighted that the council

“Our two members are vulnerable women who have fled domestic violence. As well as suffering abuse, they are both dealing with health issues which affect their daily lives.

PATROLS INCREASED AS ROBBERS TARGET DULWICH SCHOOL BOYS

EXTRA POLICE patrols and more CCTV are being put in place in Dulwich after a spate of robberies targeting school boys.

Officers say the targeted attacks towards children going to and from school spiked towards the end of last year. The News understands children from the area's top private schools have been particularly affected.

More CCTV is being installed in Dulwich to help catch those responsible, and parents can expect to see officers are on patrol during peak times, including at the beginning and end of the school day.

A teenage boy has now been arrested and charged in connection with three incidents, and will be sentenced next month.

Three other robberies are still being

investigated, and officers are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Inspector Owen Pyle told the News: “A seventeen-year-old male has been arrested and charged with two robberies and one attempted robbery committed on Monday, January 21, in the Dulwich Village and Dulwich Wood area.

“He appeared at court on Wednesday, January 23 and pleaded guilty to all three offences.

"He is due to be sentenced on Tuesday, February 12.

“Officers from Central South CID are still investigating several other reports of robbery in the Dulwich Village area.”

Inspector Pyle confirmed officers are working with schools in the area, and Southwark Council, to make sure any similar incidents are being reported.

Videos of the large scale disorder posted on social media throughout Saturday showed large groups of Millwall and Everton fans clashing on Hawkstone Road, near Surrey Quays station.

“The disorder which occurred before, during and after the Millwall v Everton Cup match on Saturday, 26 January was some of the most shocking football violence we have seen for some time,” said DAC Twist. “The abhorrent behaviour lasted a number of hours, involved dozens of people, and resulted in at least one serious injury.

He added that a “highly-skilled team” of investigators were going over the available evidence and that he was confident police would soon know the identity of the hooligans involved.

In a public Facebook post following the widespread disorder, Everton fan Jay Burns, whose face had been slashed during the melee, said he was “absolutely devastated” by the injury.

“I can’t even look at me self in the mirror,” he said, while revealing a picture of the approximately eight inch scar wound caused by the slashing.

Separately, Millwall FC and the FA confirmed they are investigating reports of racist chanting by some Millwall fans during the game, in videos widely circulated on social media.

The club vowed to come down heavily on anyone found to have been behind the racial slurs, saying in a statement: “Anyone identified and guilty of such abuse will be banned from The Den for

“I’m talking £10,000-15,000 of damage that I have to pay for. I’ve been left thousands out of pocket. I’ll have to pay out £1,700 [on the insurance excess],” he said.

“We’ve had two broken windows, we’ve had a lot of woodwork damage, the fence at the front of my pub was demolished, plants were ripped up.

“The road outside was just a sea of glass.”

Meanwhile, rumours that the Surdoc Social Club, on nearby Cope Street, had been rented out to Everton fans for Saturday’s game - leading to a large build-up of away fans near to Millwall supporting pubs - were categorically denied by the establishment.

“It would just be ridiculous that we would have any of those [Everton] fans here on a match day,” said the club’s secretary Lorraine Smith, who was on duty on Saturday evening.

“It’s a rumour put out on social media, but it’s totally untrue. We had police around here on Saturday night asking whether there had been a fight outside, but no.

“We had a few Millwall fans in here [on Saturday] enjoying a drink.”

A DOTING dad is running the London marathon in April to raise awareness of Cystic Fibrosis – which affects his Millwall super-fan son, Finley, aged eight.

Wayne Shoults, 34, who was born and raised in Walworth, will be undertaking the gruelling run in April, on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, which funds research into the condition.

The condition causes the body to produce thick mucus, negatively affecting sufferers’ lungs, digestive system and liver.

Finley was diagnosed with CF at three weeks old, which Wayne and mum Danielle, 34, say was a massive shock to the family.

Wayne said: “It came as quite a shock to us, to myself and my wife, coming to terms with everything.”

Finley’s condition has motivated him to run marathons to fundraise for the CF trust, he says.

“This’ll be my fourth marathon and my third London marathon. Before Finley was born I did nothing, I was pig ignorant [about CF].”

He is hoping to raise £4,000 to match what he has achieved in previous years.

Despite having to take forty tablets a day and doing two daily physio sessions to dislodge mucus from his lungs, little Finley doesn’t let Cystic Fibrosis get in the way of doing what he wants to do.

The Millwall supporter – whose favourite player is Jed Wallace – travels all around the country to see the Lions play, is the captain of his football team, and has even appeared in a TV advert.

“From looking at Finley you wouldn’t know he’s got this condition,” said dad Wayne, who met wife Danielle at high school in Walworth.

He added: “It’s an invisible illness. But it can be quite severe.”

The family, who moved out of the borough to Welling around five years ago, say they feel CF is a “forgotten illness” which doesn’t get the attention or funding it deserves.

Medicines which could help improve lung function for people with CF are not funded by the NHS because they’re too expensive, added Wayne.

The charity Wayne is fundraising for also relies on donations to fund research into a possible cure for the illness. He has so far raised over £1300 for the trust for this latest run.

A 37-storey tower by the Shard

PLANS HAVE been submitted for a new 37-storey tower next to the Shard.

If approved, it would see the demolition of a current 1980s office block on St Thomas Street to make way for the tower.

The proposals, as part of the New City Court development by Great Portland Estates, also include “significant public realm improvements” to provide a new access route to the Borough High Street entrance to London Bridge station, restoration of Grade 2 listed Georgian terraces along St Thomas Street and improvement of the historic Keats House.

The tower will feature a publicly accessible botanical garden on its fifth and sixth floors, and a 250-seat auditorium on its twenty-second and twenty-third floors.

Legal action being explored over council truck fly-tipping on estate PECKHAM

THE COUNCIL is exploring taking legal action against a flytipper who used a council truck to dump reams of rubbish on an estate in the middle of the night.

As the News reported in July last year, shocked residents of Peckham’s Cossall Estate filmed the council

truck dumping garden furniture, a quad bike, DVDs and bags of rubbish.

A spokesperson confirmed to the News last July that it was not on council business at the time.

In footage shared with the paper, the white Mercedes-Benz tipper truck is seen reversing into the estate at around 1.50am before upending reams of junk onto the ground.

One father-of-two, who did not wish to be named, said at the time: “I heard

this rattling noise coming along in the car park and it was this van coming in, and I know they don’t work at that time in the morning, so it started ringing alarm bells.

“I was so shocked because I have two kids and normally take them downstairs to play and it’s got all these things like nails and screws on the floor and my little one is always falling over."

PUPIL WHO LOBBIED FOR ELEPHANT REGEN RE-THINK GETS OXFORD SPOT

AN ARK Globe Academy student who has been offered a place to study geography at Oxford says he wants to ‘open the doorway’ for other British-Bangladeshis and people from minority backgrounds to apply to the prestigious university.

Irfan Choudhury found out this month his interview to study geography at Keble College had been successful.

If all goes well and he achieves one A* and two As in his exams, the Kennington-born bright spark will start studying at the college - which counts Labour politician Ed Balls and excricketer and Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, among its former students – in October.

Irfan described the moment he found out he got in as ‘surreal’, saying: “I didn’t know what to feel; I was nervous, I was happy, mixing pot of emotions. I honestly had not expected to get the offer.

“I called my dad and he couldn’t believe it. He sounded teary over the phone and asked if I was joking with him.”

He set his sights on studying geography after growing up fascinated by maps in flight magazines brought home by his father, who works for an airline company.

He will be the first person in his family to go to Oxbridge and says being from British-Bangladeshi background made his interview at the college ‘quite intimidating’ as most candidates were white.

“It’s very rare that students go to Oxford or Cambridge from my community,” he says. “I’m trying to open the doorway for them to apply to universities like Oxbridge.

“There are a lot of academic people, who don’t think of applying or don’t have the opportunity to apply.

“I want to break that barrier and inspire them to apply.”

Irfan, who hopes to one day work for the United Nations, says his extracurricular work made him stand out.

As the News reported in June last year, Irfan is part of a group of Ark Globe pupils who are lobbying developer Lendlease for a new approach to its regeneration plans in Elephant and Castle. Their campaign went all the way to Washington DC in the USA, with the

This passion comes from personal experience, after his family were forced to move to Wales for eight years after struggling to afford to live in London.

Irfan says south London will always be his home and he will continue to give back whatever happens in future: “There is a sense of insecurity for everyone living in this community, as the redevelopment projects targets the top ten per cent or one per cent income earners.

“Irrespective of where I go, whether that’d be Oxford or another university, I definitely think that my place belongs here and that will not stop me from coming back here and continuing my passion and to fight for what I believe in,” he says.

SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR ASPIRING SPORTS STARS ACROSS SOUTHWARK

ASPIRING ATHLETES and sports stars can now apply for a new sponsorship scheme that will give them free gym membership and funding for competitions and training.

Applications for Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions scheme opened on Monday and will close on Friday, February 22.

Now in its fourth year, the scheme has so far helped more than 800 athletes by giving them access to training facilities, financial support and expert advice.

Calling local people to help those with mental health difficulties

MENTORS SUPPORTING people with mental health difficulties in Southwark are calling for more people to join their peer network.

The Experts by Experience scheme, backed by Southwark Council, gives people living with long-term mental health conditions one-on-one support.

It aims to help people’s wellbeing and recovery by building relationships with others who have had similar experiences and an understanding of mental health issues and care.

Cheryl became a mentor three-and-ahalf years ago, and says she learns from her mentees ‘every single day’.

“In my opinion mentoring helps grow confidence, enabling my clients to do much more than they ever imagined,” she said.

“It helps ease their anxiety which allows them to see more clearly what they need to do for themselves.

“I had one client who couldn’t even fathom leaving the house and is now volunteering at the British Heart Foundation.

“Another client used to shove their mail underneath the carpet to be forgotten about, they now take responsibility, open and respond to their mail in a timely fashion.”

Another mentor, Kaylaa, who joined two years ago, said: “The best part of my job is when my clients come out of their shell, talking laughing and telling me their stories.

“I may encourage my clients to do something daring like going out to the

shop, or cafe and over time the person also starts talking to other people apart from me when we go out.

“Clients feel more connected with the outside world and they feel happier more often. It is potentially a path back into society.”

Testimonies from people supported by the scheme are hugely positive, with one person saying: “I have tried new activities for example I have now joined a drumming class and will continue without my peer support.

“We have seen lots of films at the cinema so I feel more confident on public transport and travelling around.”

Southwark Council’s councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult care, called on people in Southwark to join the project, which offers paid, flexible working hours.

“This is an impressive scheme that is having a real impact on people’s lives,” she said. “The profound affect that this is having on mentees lives cannot be underestimated.

“I would encourage anyone who has been touched by mental health issues to find out more about this scheme and see how your experience could help someone else.”

Do you know a south London woman who deserves a Blue Plaque? There are loads!

The London Assembly is running T a campaign to try and boost HE BLUE Plaque scheme has been running since 1866.

Blue Plaques are awarded from nominations which meet the criteria set

by English Heritage; they must have been dead for 20 years, they should be of significant public standing in a London-wide, national or international context; and they need to have made some important positive contribution to human welfare or happiness which deserves recognition.

It’s a great way to honour someone’s achievements, particularly those who have perhaps been somewhat forgotten after their death. You would think, given that the scheme has been running for over 150 years, there would be hundreds of women honoured with blue plaques across London. A nobrainer.

was a tireless social reformer, Bermondsey’s first female councillor and the first female mayor in London.

Surely, the first female Mayor of London deserves commemoration with a blue plaque in Southwark.

For me, it is shocking that someone like Olive Morris has not yet been honoured with a plaque. Born in Jamaica, she moved to South London when she was 9 years old. Dedicating her life to the struggle of black women and the underprivileged, she founded several organisations including the Black Women’s Mutual Aid, the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent.

She was a principled campaigner and wrote extensively on racial prejudice in local South London papers. She also

ran campaigns helping to rehouse black families in the 70’s. Morris died of cancer in 1979 aged just 27 but her short life had an enormous impact and one that deserves to be honoured with a plaque.

T IS devastating for all loyal and true Millwall fans that such a momentous victory in the FA Cup should be tarnished by violence off the pitch and racist chanting in the stadium.

Rival groups clashed in ugly scenes before the game around Surrey Quays Station. Exactly who did what is being played out on social media, with people forensically studying the footage posted up. The fact is that a minority from both groups - the Met estimate up to 50 people were involved in the worst elements of violence, which the police described as ‘the worst that we’d seen for some time.”

These people in football are a menace to those wanting to take their families to the game.

Millwall unfortunately have a reputation that inevitably attracts hooligans from rival clubs to see it as a badge of honour to pitch up and fight, which is very frightening for those residents in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe who are caught up in it.

Millwall as a football club have spent years combating the problem here and have led the way in tackling discrimination. But like any club, can they ever eradicate it entirely?

They have said they will ban any of the fans identified in the video singing racist chants for life, and given their zero-tolerance approach in the past to this behaviour they certainly will. In 2017 they were named family club of the year, due to the huge amount of community work they have done.

Exactly what a club can do help police events outside the ground is highly debatable.

In a statement this week Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said “the mobility, the geography, a number of factors led to the violence escalating” on Saturday, adding that “how it got to that level will form part of the inquiry.”

In 2019 it should be a given that all of the despicable behaviour witnessed on Saturday has no place in football and it’s massively frustrating that already over-stretched police resources have to be deployed for a football game.

However, there was clearly something that did not go right in preventing this minority thug element from meeting up.

We have asked the police a number of questions, to at least give residents in the area some reassurance that there is little chance of a repeat of these nasty scenes - unfortunately they have not responded. PENSIONER GETSFIFTEEN YEARS FOR MURDERING HIS WIFE

A PENSIONER who murdered his estranged wife in their Herne Hill home was sentenced to fifteen years in jail last Thursday.

David Thomas, 73, was convicted of murdering his wife Sheila Thomas, aged 69, last Tuesday after a two-week trial at the Old Bailey.

The court heard how Thomas insisted Mrs Thomas move out of their family home in Herne Hill’s Casino Avenue in June 2018 after their marriage broke down.

Jurors were told that when she had moved out, Thomas began to make enquiries about finding a gun – and told one relative that he had visited Nunhead cemetery to find a place to dispose of her body.

On the morning of the murder on July 24, Mrs Thomas had arranged to collect some of her belongings from the family home after being told that Mr Thomas would not be there.

However when she arrived, he confronted her, demanding to know where she was living.

He attacked her, inflicting fatal injuries with a knife and a piece of wood, the court heard.

Police were called to the house shortly before midday and found Mr Thomas downstairs, suffering from stab wounds to the stomach, which it later became apparent were selfinflicted.

Paramedics from London’s ambulance and air ambulance services were called but could not save Mrs Thomas’ life.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12.37pm.

Mr Thomas was arrested on

suspicion of murder before being taken to hospital for his self-inflicted wounds.

After being discharged he was remanded in custody and charged with Mrs Thomas’ murder on July 31.

AN APPEAL has been launched after a woman travelling with two small children was reportedly slapped, punched and kicked at London Bridge station.

The incident happened in a passageway leading to the Jubilee Line platforms at 5pm on Wednesday December 12.

The victim suffered bruising in the attack.

Police said they believe the woman pictured in this CCTV image may have information to help them with their investigations.

British Transport Police said an offence happened between London Bridge and Bank at 9.40am on Friday 29 November 2018.

A man is reported to have inappropriately touched a woman. He then left the train at Bank station.

It followed a second report of sexual assault between Oval and Bank stations at 10.02am on Thursday 11 October 2018.

Officers believe the man shown in these CCTV images may have information which could help their investigation.

Run in partnership with Citizens Advice, a team of specialist benefits advisors based at Peckham’s Citizens Advice Bureau has helped more than 1,250 cancer patients and their families receive more than two million pounds worth of benefits they were entitled to.

The scheme has also helped 124 people in poverty receive special grants from the charity to pay for daily essentials such as heating or clothes, with more than £54,000 paid out in total.

Support from welfare advisors is a lifeline for people treated for cancer, helping them navigate paperwork during a tough time.

The team gives free and confidential advice and also helps link them up with colleagues who can help with managing debt, employment or housing problems.

Macmillan’s partnership manager for south east London said: “Cancer doesn’t just affect you physically, it can impact all aspects of your life.

The Council will allow Licence holders to make an application to vary their Licence under sections 41A or 86A (minor variation) of the Licensing Act 2003. This applies only for reduction of licensed hours for sale/supply of alcohol so they do not fall within the operational hours of the Levy (00:00 to 06:00 hours).

IT WAS earlier this season that Peckham Town head coach Mary Phillip was turned away from the coaches and players’ entrance and pointed towards the turnstiles.

She could, perhaps, have pointed to her vast honours list, including Premier League and FA Cup titles with three clubs, the Uefa Cup, or two World Cups with England in a 68-cap career. But that’s not the former defender’s style.

In the end, she didn’t have to break down the door, but in a different way that’s exactly what she is doing in her coaching career.

“They didn’t apologise and when I was doing the warm-up I heard them saying, ‘she knows what she’s doing, doesn’t she?’” Phillip says. “People can either accept me or think I haven’t got a clue what I’m doing. Either way, the guys I’m working with accept it. They are learning and that’s my main focus.”

Phillip is the only female head coach in the 91-club Kent County League. Her team are fourth in the Premier Division, the eleventh tier in the English football structure.

Peckham-born Phillip started a playing career that would yield 22 major trophies at Millwall Lionesses. She joined Fulham and then Arsenal – where she won four consecutive Premier League and FA Cup doubles – and went to two World Cups, as an eighteen-yearold in 1995 and then twelve years later.

Phillip won a domestic treble with the Cottagers and followed that up with two more with the Gunners.

That long career might not have happened were it not for the care and

influence of Jim Hicks, the coach who guided the Lionesses to Phillip’s first domestic double in 1997.

Phillip recalls a game at Everton when she brought her first-born infant son.

“He actually held my child while we were playing,” Phillip says. “He could have taken me off the field but he didn’t.

Forty five minutes he held him and my son cried. We came in at half-time and I said I’d stay off but he said, ‘no, you’re going back out there’.

“He was a big influence in me actually staying in the game. That was a turning point whether I actually stayed playing, or motherhood takes over. That encouragement of people out there who want to help you succeed was beneficial to me.”

Hicks encouraged her coaching career and she took her first badge when she was seventeen, coaching in schools as part of Millwall’s community programme before becoming involved with Peckham Town’s youth sides.

In 2018, statistics from the Mayor of London’s Office for Policing and Crime revealed there were 805 knife-crime incidents in twelve months in Southwark, the second highest of any London borough, with Peckham seeing its share of violence.

Phillip’s day job is as a Play Leader, and she devotes almost all of her free time to coaching, developing characters as much as players.

“Grassroots football is the anchor for everyone,” Phillip continues. “Everyone started at grassroots football and no matter how good you are you’re not always going to make it, so it’s important to have a basis of something you enjoy that’s easily accessible.

“At Peckham Town we’ve done that and the kids that don’t think they’re good enough have come along and

whether they make it into the team or not they continue their development.

That’s been the heart and soul of Peckham Town since we started a youth team.

“Having the senior team there means we’ve had some players who have filtered through. It’s been great outreach for them and from there we’ve had some players go further afield and have trials at places like Leeds.

“A lot of the players we coach have the ability to make it as long we they want to keep learning. What we find is that the attitude of youngsters is the biggest downfall for them. They’ve got to be open to criticism, as well as all the praise they get, but some of them close it off and that’s their stumbling block and they fall at that hurdle. As long as we keep them level-headed and they know what’s in front of them then hopefully they’ll move forward and succeed at the end of it.”

Phillip says she prefers to be “direct” with players, and ignores what opponents might think or say based on her gender.

“I focus on my team and what the other team say doesn’t affect me in no way, shape or form,” Phillip stresses.

“My playing career has set me up for it, you’ve got to be able to win and lose.

You’ve got to be able to bounce back when things go wrong for you and I’ve had a playing career like that. The group of guys I’m working with are a fantastic bunch. They accept me for who I am

and what I know, which is the main thing.

“I’d rather be more direct. Obviously you can lose your head at times but I’m not someone that will eff and blind at them. I don’t like that, I didn’t like it myself and wouldn’t want someone doing that to me, therefore I’m not going to do that to someone. I will give you criticism where it is needed and you can either take it or leave it.

“I’m not going to say anything that is going to damage you or affect the way that you’re playing but you’ve got to work with us. We’re not trying to change you from who you are but we’re trying to marry your skill to what we’re looking for here at Peckham Town.

Nine out of ten players achieve that.”

Phillip’s commitment to Peckham Town and her determination to spend as much time as possible with her four kids – two of whom were born when she was a player – is such that she turned down an approach from Millwall Lionesses director of football Pedro Martinez Losa last summer to become head coach of the Women’s Championship club.

Phillip is well-placed to talk about coaching opportunities for minority groups, listening to the debate with interest before Sol Campbell got his break with Macclesfield Town.

Phillip says: “People’s minds are starting to change, people are starting to see that we can all do the same job regardless of the colour of our skin.

“Sol has got a job that enables him to

do that and hopefully people will see what he’s doing and the results he’s getting rather than the colour of his skin.

And not just him but all the coaches out there doing that.”

Phillip’s ex-Arsenal team-mate Alex Scott, meanwhile, has bashed stereotypes making a name for herself as an astute pundit.

“The Women’s Super League is at a professional level and Alex has come from that,” Phillip says. “For people to see her it has opened up doors. To be given that opportunity is fantastic.”

Phillip’s non-compromise on her family time led her to turn down the club she joined when she was twelve, but she is hopeful circumstances will allow for a different decision in the future.

“I’m just going to see what doors open for me. My focus right now is Peckham, I want to see if we can get promotion and push up through the leagues.

“I got a great offer to go and do it for this season, but the timing of it was just all wrong. I’m working during the day and I want to be at home with my kids in the evening. I want them to be able to see me and know me and not just think, ‘who’s this person?’

“To give up that time to coaching, I couldn’t juggle it. Hopefully when things are on a more even keel for me and settle down maybe another opportunity will open up for me and I will be able to take it. I’ve just got to wait and see what happens.”

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter, Ben Henderson, attended a meeting between the club and supporters on Monday night at which the future of Champion Hill was discussed and assurances were given that Hamlet will be at the heart of their landlord’s and Southwark council’s plans.

This Q&A had the intention of clarifying the club’s current situation and plans for the future. The hosts, Tom Cullen and Ben Clasper, shed light on how close the 125-year old institution came to destruction during 2018 but guaranteed the club’s strong hand during the upcoming negotiations with Southwark council and Meadow Partners. However, the future of the Champion Hill ground remains very much uncertain.

Ben began the meeting by confirming previously whispered rumours that the club was teetering on the brink of extinction earlier in the season. In September, it was determined that there was no longterm future for the club unless they returned to Champion Hill. In fact, if the club had not returned to East Dulwich in December, it would have had no chance of recouping the losses that had been incurred.

Even once the club had announced that it would be coming home, the return may not have been realised.

The ground was not signed off to host the Boxing Day game as late as December 22, and on Christmas Eve the willing volunteers’ hopes were dashed again by a total floodlight failure.

However, by the skin of its teeth, and through the grit of its supporters, the club made it through. Dulwich is now forecast to recoup all of its incurred losses by the end of the season.

Furthermore, its debts are entirely

playing in the Football League must be equipped with a grass pitch – so Dulwich will have to undergo some deep introspection regarding their ambitions.

However, the directors were unequivocal that this rumoured deal is not currently on the table. Meadow and Southwark council are yet to speak and the local community have not yet been consulted – all of which needs to happen before any deal can be envisaged let alone agreed upon.

Hence the event later this week during which these matters will be discussed.

Tom laid out the key messages that fans should take away.

“Meadow are looking to put in an application to develop this site – that is a fact. However, what is also a fact is that we will be involved in those conversations, and our input will be valued in those conversations. How those discussions are going to pan out, no one knows yet.

“Those are the key points – everything else is just conjecture. At the moment our plan is to maintain the current stadium as best we can, and to work with Meadow, the council and all other related parties to make sure that everyone gets what they want including the football club. That’s all the detail that we have at the moment.

It’s very early days still.”

The directors’ reassurances were met with positivity from most fans.

Club president Jack Payne gave a rousing final speech, commending the speakers for their transparency.

However, one supporter grumbled that while the club’s intentions are well-directed the proposed route forward is nothing more than a “break-up plan”, although this seemed an isolated opinion. Only time will tell.

AHEAD OF the much-anticipated event this weekend when Meadow Partners will reveal their plans for Dulwich Hamlet’s Champion Hill stadium, two of the club’s directors held a meeting on Monday evening at the Champion Hill bar.

paid or written off – making it “the only debt-free and profitable club in the league”. Among those debts was the monumental £750,000 written off

by Meadow Partners that has been the focus of much attention over the past ten months.

The meeting floor was now opened to the supporters as Tom and Ben fielded their questions with utmost transparency. The question of trust was raised multiple times – specifically how Hamlet can continue to work with a company that many fans feel treated the club poorly.

Some fans even demanded that Meadow’s representatives publicly apologise for their actions.

The directors acknowledged the unpleasantness of the ordeal with

Meadow, and accepted fans’ anger.

But they stated that they would be taking a pragmatic rather than confrontational approach to their relationship with the property developers from now onwards, in order to secure the best possible future for the club, rather than linger on old grievances.

Ben asserted his absolute trust in Meadow and their good intentions towards the club, even going as far as to state that “there is a genuine sense of affection for this football club” among the property developers. This brought ironic cheers from some supporters, but the messages emanating from Meadow are undoubtedly positive news for anyone associated with Dulwich.

The key issue of the night was Dulwich’s stadium. The club apparently cannot remain in their current ground for long as it is not fit for purpose. The question is, where they will go? Demolishing and rebuilding the current ground is unfeasible for a club with Dulwich’s funding. It has been rumoured that Meadow’s intentions are to redevelop the current Champion Hill site as flats, with the club moving to the adjacent Greendale astro turf pitch.

It has been suggested that, under these plans, a new stand and clubhouse will be built on the current stadium’s West Terrace as a part of the potential deal with the club. An astro turf pitch brings financial benefits, but any club with long-term ambitions of

goalkeeper off his line, but not by a huge distance, and lobbed an exquisite shot over his despairing dive from over 50 yards. It was an incredible finish that was in complete contrast to the opening quarter of the game.

Faversham Strike Force came out for the second half full of belief, and despite the three-goal blast in the first half the Menace appeared strangely bereft of confidence. It was no surprise when a cross from the right was met by Dinu Catalin to reduce the arrears for the visitors.

Cani and Kevin Dance had chances to extend the lead for Town, but it was Faversham who levelled on the hour mark. The ball was pulled back

by Ali Adam, and Catalin was on hand again to slam home into an

unguarded net.

Bryan Hall, Peckham’s chair and founder, said: “It was one of those strange games. We started very, very slowly and went 1-0 down. We came back strong and were on top, and we should have carried this through.

“A 3-3 result isn’t the end of the world, as we always look for a point minimum.”

THE MENACE blew a 3-1 halftime lead as Faversham’s secondhalf strikes forced a draw last weekend.

The first chance of note fell to Nicky Meta in the eighteenth minute, who forced the visiting keeper to parry the ball wide.

But in the 27th minute Alfie Ball mistimed his tackle to concede a penalty. The spot-kick was converted

by Thomas Axford to give the visitors the lead.

MILLWALL LIONESSES manager, Chris Phillips, argued that the 3-2 defeat to Women’s Championship leaders Tottenham Hotspur last weekend showed how far his side has come in a short space of time as only a last-minute winner denied them a point.

The Lionesses lost 8-0 to Spurs earlier in the season, but were moments away from earning a draw at Dartford.

Spurs dominated possession throughout but the Lionesses defended resiliently and limited the visits to very few chances in the opening exchanges.

The deadlock was broken ten minutes before the break when ex-Lioness Megan Wynne whipped in a furious cross that was met by Sarah Wilshire’s side-foot volley that found the back of the net.

The Lionesses responded wel to going behind. In the 44th minute Georgie Giddings cleared the ball from the edge of the eighteen-yard box to send Evie Clarke away on the break. The Millwall striker beat both Spurs centre-backs for pace and slotted home.

Spurs restored their lead through substitute Emma Beckett, before goalkeeper Chloe Sansom stopped them from adding a third when a finger-tip save forced a long-range effort onto the bar late into the second half.

Cheeseman confident of Garcia win – as he looks towards world title

TED CHEESEMAN believes “the world will be my oyster” as he confidently predicted he would claim a European title by beating Sergio Garcia at the O2 Arena this Saturday night.

Bermondsey’s Cheeseman (15-0; nine KO’s) takes on Spaniard Garcia, who is unbeaten in 28 bouts with thirteen KO’s, for the EBU European crown in Greenwich.

Cheeseman, 23, also challenged English super-welterweight rivals Anthony Fowler and Scott Fitzgerald to “step up to the plate” if they want to fight him. The latter pair are scheduled to meet in March.

But first Cheeseman must dispatch Garcia.

“Once you win a European title, there’s only one step up after that,” Cheeseman told Boxing Social. “When you turn pro, your goal is to become a world champion. If I win this fight on February 2, and I’m very confident that I will after studying my opponent’s style, I’m basically in line for a world title shot.

“Garcia is ranked highly with the governing bodies. Once I win this

Southwark Lancers topple league titans Old Gravesendians

SOUTHWARK LANCERS secured a key win in the promotion race in the Shepherd Neame Kent 1 away at third-place Old Gravesendians last Saturday. Old G's had won nine consecutive games in the run-up, and had beaten fourth-place Southwark handily in the previous fixture last October.

An energetic start for Southwark defied the chilly January weather, as they pushed forward before being held up on the line. But they quickly scored two unanswered tries, flanker Mike Wilkinson sneaking one through following a maul, before a concerted drive pressed the ball over for a 12-0 lead.

Old G's slowly found their feet, stringing together some good passes, and eventually driving to the corner for a try. A difficult conversion effort went wide to leave the score 12-5.

While fears of a comeback seemed justified, Southwark had heroically built a 22-5 lead by half-time. First they out-

foxed the Old G's defence to put Jael Guevara over, before another strong drive ended with Matthew EvansYoung going in.

Southwark showed stamina and resilience after the restart, driving to the Old G's line to be denied twice, before securing a fifth try and a 27-5 lead.

They piled on the misery for the hosts, who struggled defensively and left gaps out wide. Southwark got another try through prolific winger Ruairi Hourihane for a near-insurmountable 32-5 lead.

Old G's sent a parting salvo that exhibited offensive play more characteristic of their successful season so far, Southwark allowing them a bonus point after a late rally. But Lancers were able to hold off the assault and add to their own account to clinch a thrilling contest 39-24.

The win leads Lancers into a break this weekend, before they return to Burgess Park to play Gillingham on Feb 9, seeking to close the five-point gap to third place.

THERE WAS another FA Cup match earlier this season when a group of spirited Millwall players brought vaunted Premier League opponents to the brink only to have their hearts broken in injury-time.

On Saturday, George Alexander saw the other side of the beautiful game and it will take something special to top this if he goes on to have a successful Millwall career.

Alexander, the seventeen-year-old son of Gary, was on the bench for the first time for Millwall, and couldn’t have hoped to see more action packed into a match decided by Murray Wallace four minutes into injury-time and that reached such an intense crescendo you almost felt the foundations shaking.

In that youth tie in December the young Lions were in the same minute when Spurs equalised and then went on to win 2-1 in extra-time.

minute with a replay at Goodison Park neither side wanted looming.

The noise around the ground had barely relented in a second half in which substitute Cenk Tosun had put Everton ahead for the second time in the 72nd minute, before Jake Cooper provided the game’s moment of controversy when the ball went in off his arm in the 75th minute.

The Den had never been so intense in Neil Harris’ time in charge. Cooper’s goal saw fans in the Barry Kitchener Stand strain over the barrier to the press box to get as close to the away end as possible, however little practical difference those extra inches made.

Maybe it was the violence before the game, the videos of groups of rival fans fighting on Hawkstone Road, the images of Everton supporters gathering outside and goading those inside Whelans pub, that added to the febrile atmosphere at the ground. If the FA Cup is dying there is always the defibrillating jolt that is provided on these Den days.

The elements were there early that

suggested an upset was on: the rain that started teeming down, the water pooling and the muddy white shorts of the home players, the wind swirling in from the open corners.

Some reports said Millwall out-battled Everton, but that was unfair on the visitors and it couldn’t be said they weren’t up for it. They were braced for an onslaught of long balls and set-pieces and for 46 minutes of the first half they responded to it and had a lead given to them by Richarlison, whose shot Jordan Archer let squirm under his body. When replays appeared on the big screen – an unlikely part of the story on this bitter south London evening – the home fans groaned. How Everton fans delighted in it.

But Millwall found the perfect response just before the break. Shaun Williams’ free-kick was headed into the box by Cooper and Lee Gregory expertly looped a header over England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who had hesitated to come for the ball.

increasingly heavy pitch. Millwall’s bench not only contained Alexander but also Jethro Hanson, an eighteen-year midfielder promoted with ten first-team players unavailable.

Marco Silva could call on Theo Walcott and Tosun, the latter producing a low finish inside the far post after being slipped in by Gylfi Sigurdsson.

But the Lions had unsung heroes all over the pitch. The injured Jed Wallace watched the game from the press box and was heard to remark at one point in the first half that “Tunni never lets you down.” Ryan Tunnicliffe epitomised his side’s fight, running himself close to a standstill trying to stop Everton playing through the middle. Gregory did the work of two men up front.

And then there was the quality of setpieces from Williams and Shane Ferguson. Millwall pressed for another equaliser, Mahlon Romeo fouled near the right corner. Ferguson’s in-swinging delivery caused panic, Williams nodded down, the ball bouncing off Kurt Zouma

to Wallace whose shot was saved by Pickford but Cooper was there with a helping hand.

Everton were furious, their boss Marc Silva pointing to replays on the big screen. When Neil Harris realised he turned around and desperately urged the club’s video technicians to desist from showing it. With no video assistant referee (VAR) Michael Oliver conferred with his linesman. The goal stood.

Thoughts turned to a Goodison replay, but the script had a further twist.

Morison cleverly won a free-kick in the 93rd minute and Williams stood over the ball as The Den heaved with anticipation. The delivery found Shaun Hutchinson who nodded the ball on towards the six-yard box. And just as another unassuming full-back, Shaun Cummings, had done against Leicester in 2017, Wallace showed the same composure to take a touch before slotting home and become Millwall’s latest match-winning FA Cup hero.

They FA Cup is dead? Not in these parts.

Trouble flared between groups of fans near Surrey Quays station where an Everton supporter had his face slashed.

Talksport invited on Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh on Monday morning when Joe Amphlett, a producer for the radio station and Millwall fan, suggested the

We had seven, eight players in the penalty area. They all see that it’s handball, so it’s really difficult that the referee cannot see that also.

And then it’s also on the big screen, thousands of people see it there but the referee didn’t see it again.

It was really strange in that moment.

Amphlett put forward a name change: Bermondsey Lions. He said: “I think the problem is the name of the club. It’s synonymous with violence and hooliganism from the past.”

Kavanagh didn’t entertain the idea.

“They won’t be doing that. It’s just not a proportionate response to what has happened here,” Kavanagh said. “We need a bit of proportionality about what has gone on here.

“The vast majority of the fans are

fantastic people, they’re proud of their club and they create an unbelievable atmosphere. They don’t want to cross that line, but there are a few uneducated people who don’t understand.

“And let’s actually separate ‘the club’ and ‘these people’. The club don’t want this. We are disgusted by this, we’re upset about this and we’re not happy.

“The people and good honest fans weren’t doing this, this is a small pocket of people. Let’s remember the other fans.

They deserve credit.

“This is a very, very small minority. The majority of fans were absolutely fantastic on Saturday and created an atmosphere and helped create a result the FA should be proud of for the competition, and yet we’re giving these idiots the oxygen after what they did, and that’s just crazy.”

There were also a number of calls for Millwall to be thrown out of the competition.

‘Giants’ Millwall make short trip to Dons in the fifth round

NEIL HARRIS revealed the message exchanged with his assistant David Livermore seconds after Murray Wallace’s goal against Everton last Saturday.

With The Den in wild ecstasy and players and staff celebrating, Livermore could be seen grabbing Harris and it was immediately decided to bring on Alex Pearce.

The Lions saw out the remaining moments to clinch a fifth consecutive win in the FA Cup against a Premier League side at The Den. “We knew there were 30 seconds left and that they would kick off and get the ball straight into our box,” Harris explained. “Even for that 30 seconds having Pearcey on the pitch was vital, the first thing he does when he comes on is run 30 yards and attacks the ball. What a fellow to be able to bring on.

“That’s not just the reason we brought him into the club, but what you saw in that 30 seconds and in the performance against Hull was the leadership, that quality. That’s why I brought him in.

“The moment he walks on the pitch he’s focussed, he’s talking to people, he’s squeezing the defensive line, he won a header. That’s the importance of the man within our club already.

“He’s been a real joy to work with.”

In Monday’s draw, Millwall were paired with AFC Wimbledon in the fifth round. The Dons produced one of the biggest upsets of this season’s competition when they defeated West Ham 4-2 last Saturday night.

Wimbledon manager Wally Downes started his coaching career at Millwall in the late 1980s. “It’s a different dynamic for both of us in the next round,” Downes said. “All of a sudden now, Millwall are the giants.”

Lions attacker’s versatility can help with international ambitions

AIDEN O’BRIEN knows he must start regularly for Millwall to add to his international caps – because he was personally told so by Mick McCarthy.

New Republic of Ireland boss McCarthy phoned O’Brien after he replaced Martin O’Neill and told the Millwall attacker he wanted players in his squad who are first choices in their club teams.

O’Brien scored on his Ireland debut and won two more caps under O’Neill, before McCarthy took over.

The former Millwall boss is preparing for the 2020 European Championship qualifying double-header against Gibraltar and Georgia in March.

O’Brien, 25, played as a right-sided attacker in a 4-3-3 formation in the 3-2 FA Cup win over Everton, but Ben Marshall will be available against Rotherham on Saturday after being cup-tied last weekend and Jed Wallace could return from a groin injury.

O’Brien has started thirteen league

games this season and come on twelve times, and Millwall added more attacking depth this month with Marshall joining from Norwich.

“It’s always been competitive, even before Marshall came in,” O’Brien said. “Me, Fergie [Shane Ferguson], Jed, Fred [Onyedinma], a couple of others, we can all play on the wing and a couple of us up front so there are a few positions we’re fighting for.

“Competition is good but it all comes down to the manager and what team he thinks is best for the right occasion.

“Everyone’s got to train to their best ability, enjoy it and have a smile on their face because we’re in the best job in the world. You have to enjoy it as well as take it seriously.

“I’ve always tried to give it my all on the training pitch and make sure I get what I can out of the sessions for myself. We’ve got one training session a day and it’s two hours, so you need to make sure that you get the information and work on board.

“There’s no one at the training ground that dips or doesn’t try. It’s a good camp in that respect.”

“4-3-3 is a more attacking shape, though we still have to do the defensive side of things first, which we did and I thought we were excellent as a unit against Everton, a top side in the Premier League,” O’Brien continued.

“We cancelled them out so credit to us for that.

“I feel that with 4-3-3 once we do gain the ball back we’re a couple of yards up the pitch compared to 4-4-2.

It’s still the same thing in terms of doing your defensive duties.

“Really it’s Greggs [Lee Gregory] and Lenny [Ryan Leonard], with Greggs staying up occupying the centre-halves and Lenny picking up loose balls and we’re breaking off him and running off him and he’s sliding us through.

“It was a good mix and it worked on the day so credit to the gaffer for

seeing that.”

O’Brien was reminded of his first Millwall appearance, as a seventeenyear-old in a League Cup games against Wolves in 2011, when Jethro Hanson, 18, and George Alexander, 17, were named on the bench last weekend.

O’Brien was asked what words of advice he would have for the pair.

He said: “I would say enjoy it and be ready at all times. I was proud and buzzing for them being on the bench for such a big game, such a big occasion. There were so many fans, it was buzzing and to get the win at the end they must have been thinking, ‘wow, I’m part of this, I can’t wait to be here every week’.

“I remember back in my day when I was younger when I went away to play Wolves. We did lose 5-0 but I came on for fifteen or 20 minutes and it really gave me a buzz, it made me realise how much I wanted it. It gives you that hunger to get more after you’ve had a little taste of it.

“I hope that’s what it’s done for them and they can push on try and get a place in the team in the next couple of years.”

STEVE MORISON believes Millwall should not be held responsible for violence that happens away from The Den – and said the players only focused on the achievement of beating Everton last weekend.

Fans of both clubs clashed near Surrey Quays station before kick-off before a video surfaced after the game showing home fans allegedly engaged in racist chanting inside the stadium.

Morison feels “a minority” can “ruin it for everyone else” as national media coverage of the fourth-round win over the Toffees centred predominantly on events off the pitch.

“It’s the same every time, they want to put a downer on our achievements,” Morison said. “The media want to focus on the negatives. The stuff that happened before the game, the fighting at Surrey Quays, that’s a police matter, that’s nothing to do with a football club.

“If a group of Everton fans decide they’re going to get off at Surrey Quays and not South Bermondsey and have a meet-up with some Millwall fans or whoever that’s their prerogative. The football club can’t help that.

“The stuff in the ground I didn’t even hear it at the time. I didn’t know anything about it until afterwards, so that proves it must have been a minority.

“It’s unfortunate. We’ve had it many times, whether it’s something said that’s not right, people going on the pitch, there’s always a minority that ruin it for everyone else.

“Unfortunately that’s what’s happened. We’ve secured a massive, massive victory for the football club, yet all anyone wants to talk about is what happened outside the ground and the stuff that happened in the terraces.

“It’s disappointing but the players are not focused on that. The football club will do what they need to do and obviously anyone that’s found to be doing any wrong will be dealt with accordingly.

“From the players’ point of view we know how big the result was and we’re not focusing on that other side of it.

AFTER EACH of Millwall’s four FA Cup games against Premier League opposition in 2016-17, they drew their next league fixture 0-0.

Three were at The Den, the away game a 0-0 draw against Charlton a week after beating Bournemouth 30.

Two of them were on Tuesday nights – against Walsall and Chesterfield – following 1-0 wins the previous Saturday against Watford and Leicester.

Steve Morison believes having a full week to prepare for the clash with Rotherham this Saturday could help the side avoid a similar pitfall.

STEVE MORISON knows one way to keep earning new contracts – help Millwall get the results that keep Neil Harris in the job.

Morison made the quip this week after Harris said previously that there would be a place for the captain in the Lions squad as long as he was boss.

Morison is out of contract in the summer and will turn 36 in the first month of next season.

The skipper is determined to earn a new deal, and will almost certainly be awarded one. Morison has been used

seventeen times off the bench in all competitions this season, and he showed again last weekend how valuable his experience is when he won a 93rd-minute free-kick that led to Millwall’s winning goal against Everton in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Harris has emphasised Morison’s value to the side on and off the pitch.

“It’s nice to hear,” Morison said.

“We just have to make sure the manager stays here, don’t we? We have to keep winning games, stay in the Championship and see what happens.

“It will probably be towards the end of the season when we know where we are. When that happens hopefully it’ll mean I’ll still be here next

season.”

This season, Morison saw Tom Elliott establish himself as firstchoice target man alongside Lee Gregory. Since Elliott dislocated his shoulder Harris has used a 4-3-3 formation with Gregory the lone man up front.

Morison said there is one benefit to featuring less this season.

“I feel a bit better because I’m not being worked as hard,” Morison joked. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s frustrating because I want to play as many minutes as I can.

“Apart from the Middlesbrough one when I let the team down [by giving away a penalty], usually I come on and affect the game in a positive way.

“The manager knows I’m here and I’m ready. My mindset is always the same. He’s knows he can call on me when he wants. Whether it’s to start or to come on.

NEIL HARRIS is ready to make some “tough decisions” against Rotherham this weekend.

Millwall produced a heroic display to knock Everton out of the FA Cup last weekend but some of those players are not guaranteed to start as the Lions return to league action.

Harris’ options against the Millers are boosted by the availability of Ben Marshall and Ben Thompson, who were cup-tied last weekend.

Jed Wallace could also return from injury as Millwall aim to pull further clear of the relegation zone.

“What the cup run does is enable the squad to get plenty of opportunities to play. There are some tough decisions,” Harris said.

“The performance at Boro was outstanding and deserving of three points. Then the game against Everton was a performance that made me privileged to be their manager.

“There were some really strong performances and the tough decisions selection-wise continues this week, and what a position for me to be in.

“What I do know now is whatever eleven I go with I’m going to have seven players on the bench that are going to be more than capable of coming in and affecting the team. There will be players on that bench desperate to get on and I can turn around knowing they can make a difference.”

Meanwhile, Millwall were still trying to add a striker to their squad after we went to press. The Lions were close twice to loan deals last weekend, but one club changed the terms and wanted a permanent deal. The other club's progression in the FA Cup scuppered a move.
