A PENSIONER has pleaded for his late mother’s engagement and wedding rings to be returned, after his home was burgled while he was away on holiday.

Ray Davis, a retired Rotherhithe lorry driver, said he didn’t care about money that was also stolen in the break-in – but that his mother’s rings were sentimental, as well as the mobile phones which contained photos of his partner, who passed away in 2015.

OUTHWARK’S YEAR 11 pupils held up their end of the deal last Thursday, with results showing a fifth year of improving GCSE grades, a week after their older counterparts’ A-level success.

Kingsdale’s Elba Feo achieved a stunning 15 A*s, grade 9s in maths and English and a grade 8 in English literature.

She may have set a national record.

With the bad reputation earned by some young people through crime and bad behaviour, it’s good to be able to give the big picture - our youngsters are bright, ambitious and successful.

Help Cavell’s family help others

S

OME FAMILIES who have faced huge challenges come out the other side stronger, battling for others not to have to go through the same experience.

This week the family of six-year-old Bermondsey boy Cavell Neavin spoke to the News about his brave fight against brain cancer.

Their story, of how Cavell’s symptoms emerged and developed from complaints of a headache at the age of just three, will touch the hearts of many readers.

Young Cavell suffered sight loss because of the illness, his eyes stayed in a fixed downwards position.

But he is now thriving at school and making up for lost time.

His family are now asking businesses and locals to take part in Glow Gold September, a campaign to make the public aware of childhood cancer.

They are also hoping to hold a fundraising event to buy portable DVD players for children who are suffering the same kind of sight problems as Cavell had.

Some people come out of such adversity stronger, and this seems so for Cavell’s family.

Help them raise awareness and money, if you can.

Country’s first ‘milk sommelier’ hosting tasting menu at market

Graham’s The Family Dairy appointed Doug Wood to help milk lovers discover the hidden depths of their favourite ‘house white’.

The sommelier explores the flavours that can be tasted – but are often overlooked – in the everyday tipple, from white chocolate and panna cotta in Organic Whole Milk with Cream at the Top, to the bready notes, vanilla and toasted nut flavours that can be found in Graham’s Gold Smooth.

Bedales of Borough Market will put on five courses of food – from Longhorn beef tartare, to freshlybaked chocolate and almond biscotti – will be paired with a fine selection of fresh Graham’s milk at the tasting event.

A PENSIONER has pleaded for his late mother’s engagement and wedding rings to be returned after his home was burgled while he was on holiday.

Thieves also snatched a fruit bowl full of change worth about £300, a small safe, three mobile phones, a gold chain, a new wallet, and four watches when they broke into Ray Davis’ flat in Rotherhithe.

Bizarrely, they even stole four deodorants from the 69-year-old’s bathroom at his flat on the Westlake estate.

Mr Davis, a retired lorry driver, said he didn’t care about the money stolen – but that his mother’s rings were sentimental, as well as the mobile phones which contained photos of his partner who passed away in 2015.

“It’s not so much the money, it’s the fact there was a platinum diamond ring and a platinum wedding ring which belonged to my mum,” said the pensioner, who has lived on the estate for 21 years.

“I want to get the rings back; they can keep the money and the watches.

“They didn’t even go through the drawers or anything – they just saw

what they wanted and boom, they were out of here.

“I think they are scum bags – and that’s being polite.”

Mr Davis said he returned home at about 6pm on Monday, August 14, to find his bathroom window “hanging out across the balcony ripped right

out”.

The pensioner said he believed it had been the work of two people, as the fruit bowl would have been too

In addition, Camberwell (which is used by officers as a base, rather than a working station) and Kennington could be sold off, along with other buildings used by the police in Southwark.

The front counter at Walworth police station, which had 3.2 crimes reported

heavy for one person to lift through the window.

Mr Davis also said incidents of that nature were becoming “too regular” after a woman in another flat on the estate had her mobility scooter stolen the week before he was burgled.

A police spokesperson said there had been no arrests and that enquiries continued.

“Police were called to an address in Rotherhithe New Road SE16 to reports of a burglary,” said the spokesperson.

“The incident took place overnight between August 13 and 14.

“A window had been forced and items of property stolen, including two rings and other jewellery.”

Rotherhithe nick to be put up for sale in September confirms Mayor Khan ROTHERHITHE

ROTHERHITHE: Plans to demolish an old pub and build flats in its place have been withdrawn.

The proposal for the site of the former Orange Bull, also previously known as the Aardvark, was submitted to the council in July.

The application was recently withdrawn, however Planning & Party Wall Specialists Ltd, which drew up the plans, told the News it was to allow for further design alterations to be made and that the application would be resubmitted. The pub, which now sits empty in Rotherhithe Street, could be knocked down to make way for a fourstorey building containing eight flats with a roof garden, if the plans go ahead.

ROTHERHITHE POLICE station will be put up for sale next month.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has confirmed the station in Lower Road has been vacated and will be openly marketed from September.

The property is among five police buildings to be closed and put up for sale next month, having been earmarked for disposal under the previous mayor, Boris Johnson.

The news came in response to a

THE STORIES of those killed and injured in a WWI Zeppelin bombing raid over what is now Burgess Park are to be unearthed for the first time.

Almost a century ago, on October 19, 1917, a bomb landed in Calmington Road, killing ten people, injuring 24, and demolishing a fish and chip shop, a doctor's surgery, and houses.

Amongst the tales to be told are that of Henry Boyce-Balls and his second wife Nellie Darville, who lived over their grocers shop with their five young children. Only a few of the family survived the bombing.

The Friends of Burgess Park’s ‘Zeppelin 1917’ project will uncover the stories of local heroes and piece together the dramatic raid during a festival of events this year.

Jon Pickup and Andrew Pearson are heading up the project – made possible by a £9,800 Heritage Lottery Fund grant – and are keen for volunteers to come forward to help.

"We'll be visiting the Imperial War Museum and Southwark Heritage Library to look into archive material about the people who lived in the street,” said Mr Pickup.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to do some original research and uncover hidden stories.”

Southwark Council has also appointed artist Sally Hogarth to create an artwork for Burgess Park.

John Whelan will bring together historical research with volunteers to tell the story of the raid through an animated walk.

And Stephen Bourne, a local historian and author, will talk about black servicemen as well as the men and women who stayed at home and played a heroic role in the civil defence.

Stuart Hobley, head of HLF London, said: “The impact of the First World War was far reaching, touching and shaping every corner of the UK and beyond.

“With our small grants programme, we are enabling even more communities like those involved in Zeppelin 1917 to explore the continuing legacy of this conflict and help local young people in particular to broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.”

WHEN THREE-year-old Cavell Neavin began complaining of headaches, his family never could have guessed it would turn out to be brain cancer.

The Bermondsey boy had been happy and healthy until he suddenly started to suffer with pain in his head and sickness around September 2014.

He complained of a stiff neck and couldn’t walk properly but when his family took him to the doctor, he was given antibiotics and sent home to rest.

However, on November 13, 2014, while his young mother Jade Usuanlele was sitting a midwifery exam at college, Cavell was rushed to A&E after his grandparents noticed his condition deteriorating.

A CT scan found fluid on his brain and a biopsy revealed the three-yearold had pineoblastoma – a form of cancer.

“I was sitting an exam and had so many texts and missed calls,” recalled Jade, now 25, who also has a tenmonth-old son.

“I thought maybe he’d had a fall; I never expected it to be something like that.

“My friend got through to me when I was on the bus and told me.

“I got back to my grandparents’ and when I saw my Grandad I knew something was wrong because he doesn’t worry.

“When I got to the hospital Cavell was just lifeless; I was really scared.”

Cavell, now six, had chemotherapy and was in and out of hospital for treatment over the course of the following year.

Doctors told Jade her young son wouldn’t still be here today if he had been taken to hospital just a day later but thankfully, on December 16, 2015, he was given the all clear.

The youngster suffered from some side effects because of the cancer, such as sight loss caused by his eyes being fixed downwards, but he is now thriving at primary school and is determined to make up for lost time.

“He is still trying to catch up at school and with his strength and he has a bit of hearing loss but his sight has

THE COUNCIL has threatened to snub a property developer who hoped to build 1,050 flats, whilst suggesting it will come far short of the council’s affordable housing policy.

Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the proposed transformation of industrial land south of Old Kent Road must offer 35 per cent affordable housing, or it “will not be taken to our planning committee for consideration”. Cllr Williams said the zero tolerance policy would apply to the Old Kent Road masterplan, but did not commit to applying it across the whole borough.

The response came after the News asked the council to comment on the planning application, submitted in July, by Berkeley Homes (South East London) Ltd. And it was made in reference to the council’s newly-announced planning policy: that all new developments in Old Kent Road must abide by the council’s 35 per cent affordable housing policy, regardless of developers’ concerns about profitability.

If approved, the firm’s development would dominate a site bordered by Bianca Road, Latona Road, Haymerle Road, Frensham Street and Malt Street. It would also require demolition of industrial buildings south of Halfords and B&Q; between the Asda car park and Halfords; and north of Bianca Road.

The application is split into Phase One and Phase Two. Phase One includes: three buildings at 40-storeys, fifteen-storeys, and six storeys tall, to provide 359 flats; 129 car parking spaces and 563 cycle spaces, with shops, community-use and leisure buildings. Phase Two is to build 691 flats, with ground floor space for retail, services, and food-and-drink businesses, as well as leisure facilities and other non-residential uses.

Old Kent Road exhibition to open

A FREE exhibition hosted by the Livesey Exchange will celebrate the economic life of the Old Kent Road, writes Emma Snaith...

In light of plans for 25,000 new homes in the Old Kent Area Action Plan, the exhibition will ask: what will happen to the 1,000 businesses trading along and near the road?

Photographs, sketches and models will display the variety of businesses along the road, from food wholesalers to vehicle repair shops, artists’ studios, metal workshops and set and prop makers for London’s theatres.

The exhibition will open from 11am-6pm on the weekend of September 16 and 17, at the Livesey Exchange in Bird In Bush Road.

Berkeley’s application said the scheme would deliver “a minimum 20 per cent affordable housing”, based on the firm’s own speculation that providing more would limit its profits. “A viability submission will… demonstrate the reasons why the development, based on today’s costs and values, is unable to support the provision of affordable housing.”

Cllr Williams: “It is vital that the regeneration of the Old Kent Road and the much needed investment into this area delivers benefits for our residents, including genuinely affordable homes for the thousands of families on our waiting list.

Our policy is for 35 per cent affordable homes on each new development. If a proposed scheme does not have that level of affordable housing, like the current Berkeley Homes application in Malt Street, then it will not be taken to our planning committee for consideration.”

A Berkeley spokesperson told the News it did not wish to comment.

Market plans to go plastic-free after fountains installed

BOROUGH: Free drinking water fountains have been installed in Borough Market as part of its drive to become plastic bottle-free.

Three fountains were placed around the market on August 23 as part of its move to phase out all sales of single-use plastic bottles at the market over the next six months.

And plans are already in place to produce Borough Market refillable bottles made from recycled plastic that can be purchased from stalls around the market.

Borough Market’s aim is to become Britain’s biggest food shopping destination that is entirely plasticfree.

All other packaging used by the market’s 114 traders over its 51,272 sq ft site aims to be bio-degradable and compostable, helping Borough Market achieve zero waste to landfill.

Gerri Scott looks to ‘fulfil dream’ of starting up her own business

SOUTHWARK’S HEAD of housing, Gerri Scott, has announced she is leaving the council.

Ms Scott joined the council as director of housing and community service in January 2011. She will leave at the end of the December, after seven years’ service.

She broke the news in an email addressed to the chairs of tenants’ and residents’ associations across the borough. Her message said: “I have decided to completely change my career path and will be leaving the council at the end of December.

“I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made in Southwark, and your support and commitment to providing the very best services for residents has been a huge part of what we have achieved. The next few months will continue to be busy as there are some important tasks to finish, not least putting in place a longterm plan for the residents of the Ledbury estate, and the transition of the Capita contract to the shared IT service with Brent and Lewisham.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working for what I believe is the very best council in London, with fantastic colleagues, councillors, residents and

partners but I have ambitions beyond local government that I would like to fulfil, including a long held dream of setting up my own business. After nearly 30 years in public service, it’s time to get back to my creative roots.

Landlord told to demolish extension

EAST DULWICH: A landlord was forced to demolish a “potentially dangerous” extension that was being used for flats.

Hakan Tunc built the rooms behind his Ash Kebab takeaway business in Forest Hill Road without planning permission.

An investigation by Southwark Council uncovered the issue, and officers visited to find the 20sqm had three separate flats, with a bathroom and kitchenette squeezed inside it.

A statement from the council said “one flat looked like up to three people were living in it”. Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “Making sure we have affordable housing for people in the borough is one of the council’s top priorities, but this does not mean we will turn a blind eye to unauthorised, poor quality and potentially dangerous ‘beds in sheds’ structures.

“Southwark Council will investigate, and if necessary prosecute, any landlords who are found to be renting out these types of properties.”

Wheelchair-bound resident says he doesn’t want to move from Ledbury Estate, despite fears aboute safety of blocks

AN ELDERLY Ledbury Estate resident has vowed to stay in his home, despite facing months of disruption due to fears about the blocks’ safety.

Peter Edwards, an amputee, has for 35 years lived on the third floor of Skenfrith, one of four tower blocks on the estate just off Old Kent Road.

Since the Grenfell tower tragedy, some 200 households in the thirteen-storey blocks have seen each passing week bring new headlines about flaws in the blocks’ safety.

On August 10 it was revealed by structural surveyors Arup that “strengthening works” – which should have been carried following the deadly Ronan Point tower block collapse in 1968 – may never have happened on the Ledbury. The revelations meant that the thirteen-storey blocks could collapse in the event of a gas explosion, and so supplies were cut.

Amid the turmoil, Peter said he would rather stay in the community he knows despite many residents taking up the

council’s offer to be rehoused. The 76year-old, who worked at Spitalfields Market and for the Department of Environment, now has to wash himself by boiling a kettle and filling the sink.

“Lucky I don’t have any children to wash, and I’m in no great rush,” he said.

“It brings back memories, the things my mum and aunt used to do to keep clean.

I’m happy to stay, having been here so long. The worst thing for me is being on the third floor in a wheelchair – if the lift breaks down. Apart from that I’m alright.”

“I suppose I’m being a bit awkward from the council’s point of view because I don’t want to move. I’m holding out that I will be able to move to Harry Lamborn House [sheltered accommodation] because it’s close by and I know people who live there. But it would depend on someone else dropping dead quite frankly. I don’t particularly want to leave this area having been here so long.”

Peter’s flat was chosen by Keep Moat for a refurbishment to make it wheelchair friendly, as part of the firm’s “service to the community” programme. It offered him new furniture built to a lower level,

and turned his bathroom into a wet room.

He added: “I used to have a friend in the off licence [on Old Kent Road] who helped me, but he had to go because his landlord wanted to change the use [of the building]. Then my old neighbour who used to do my shopping moved away. I have a member of staff at Asda who helps me, but other than that I don’t socialise much. So that would be another advantage of moving to Harry Lamborn House. Otherwise I’m a bit up the creek without a paddle with all of this Grenfell stuff.”

Peter also had problems arranging for contractors to have an immersion heater installed, after two no-shows, and later receiving a letter saying he “hadn’t made himself available” for a visit. He will continue to rely on the kettle for his water until three more appointment can be arranged for the heater to be installed.

A Southwark Council spokeswoman said that 25 flats have had immersion heaters installed, and 50 more are “in progress”. Three households have moved from the estate, ten more have received offers and are awaiting viewings. Another eleven have applied and “finished in first position”.

‘Crisis’ meeting call rejected

A ROW has broken out between Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors over whether the upheaval facing Ledbury Estate residents should be debated at an Extraordinary Meeting.

Lib Dem leader councillor Anood Al-Samerai last week requested an Extraordinary Full Council meeting be arranged in September. She said last week that the meeting should be used to hold the council’s Labour leadership to account over the “ongoing crisis” at the blocks.

But mayor Charlie Smith – who has an impartial role in deciding whether to schedule such meetings – has rejected the Lib Dems’ request. He told the News: “I’m suggesting what I thought would be a better alternative. If you had a Full Council meeting, each side would put forward a motion which would be debated, and it would for, and something might be referred over to the cabinet, and then they would probably send it

to the Over view and Scrutiny Committee to look at. My idea is rather than go through all of that process we should go straight to the Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Because they actually have more power to call on local residents and experts to give evidence. That committee can be more forensic. And it would be quicker and easier to arrange, as they have a next meeting on September 11.”

Cllr Al-Samerai on Tuesday told the News: “I think this decision is shocking. A request like this has never been said no to before. This is absolutely just Labour trying to close ranks and stop this being debated.

“I believe this should be put to both committees. The reason we were calling for the Extraordinary Meeting is that this is a very extraordinary situation and I think the residents deserve for every councillor in this borough to hear what they are going through.”

Surveyor’s report due

A REPORT by structural surveyors Arup, expected to give in-depth analysis of potential structural issues with the Ledbury tower blocks, was due for publication on August 30, after this newspaper’s print deadline.

The report was expected to explain the extent of the works

needed on the blocks and residents’ flats.

It will also address the question of whether strengthening works, which should have been applied to all tower blocks to make them able to withstand a gas explosion following the 1968 Ronan Point tower block collapse, were applied to the Ledbury.

Cyclist cleared of killing

A BERMONDSEY cyclist has been cleared of killing a mother-of-two who died after he crashed into her while illegally riding a bike without a front brake.

Former bike courier Charlie Alliston, 20, was cleared of manslaughter, but could still face up to two years in jail after being found guilty of causing bodily harm by wanton and furious riding at the Old Bailey on August 23.

Alliston, then eighteen, of Trothy Road, was travelling at 18mph on a fixedwheel track bike with no front brakes before he crashed into 44-year-old Kim Briggs as she crossed busy Old Street in February last year.

Prosecutors took the unprecedented step of bringing a manslaughter charge due to the unusually grave circumstances of the case.

Following a trial, jurors took more than twelve hours to find Alliston not guilty of manslaughter but convicted him of the lesser offence, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in jail.

The former bike courier, wearing a top with "Anti Social" on it, had been on his way to buy food for his girlfriend when he crashed into Mrs Briggs during her lunch break.

Jurors heard Alliston's trendy "fixie" bike was not legal to use on the road without being modified to add a front brake.

He bought the ÂŁ700 Planet X bike second-hand for ÂŁ470 in January last year, telling the vendor he wanted to use it for track cycling.

In a reference to an American bike stunt film-maker, he tweeted: "The time when you first take your brakes off and feeling like you're in a @lucasbrunelle movie."

Crash investigators who studied CCTV of the incident concluded Alliston would have been able to stop and avoid the collision if the bike had been fitted with a front brake.

But giving evidence in his trial, Alliston claimed not to know the bike was illegal on the road and told jurors he was not riding recklessly.

He said: "At all times I would know what I'm doing and completely responsible for my actions. I did not get a kick or enjoyment out of not being

safe."

Mrs Briggs's widower Matthew, from Lewisham, south London, sat in court throughout the trial, during which the CCTV footage of the crash was played several times.

Judge Wendy Joseph QC ordered a presentence report, making clear she was considering jail.

She said: "I have not seen one iota of remorse from Mr Alliston at all at any stage."

She adjourned sentencing until September 18.

As she crossed the capital's Old Street, he twice shouted for her to get out of the way but failed to stop or avoid the headon collision.

He sprang up and continued to shout at his victim as she lay in the road with catastrophic head injuries. Mrs Briggs died in hospital a week later.

Alliston criticised Mrs Briggs and claimed she was responsible for the crash in a string of posts on social media in the days that followed.

In a comment on an online news article, he claimed he had shouted out to her but she "ignored me", looked back at her phone then "stopped dead" in his path.

He wrote: "I feel bad due to the seriousness of her injuries but I can put my hands up and say this is not my fault."

On an internet forum for fixed-wheel bike enthusiasts, he later described how he twice warned her to "get the f*** outta my way".

He wrote: "We collided pretty hard, our heads hit together, hers went into the floor and ricocheted into mine.

"It is a pretty serious incident so I won't bother saying oh she deserved it, it's her fault. Yes it is her fault but no she did not deserve it.

"Hopefully, it is a lesson learned on her behalf, it shouldn't have happened like it did but what more can I say."

A BLOCK of abandoned Victorian toilets in Camberwell looks set to be transformed into an arts and publishing space, after a crowdfunding project received £10,000 of pledges.

The Bower project in Brunswick Park was backed by 240 people after it launched in June.

Joyce Cronin and Louisa Bailey said the brick block in Brunswick Park had been empty “since the 1980s”. But their vision is to make into a pop-up space for theatre and film screenings and artists, as well as a base for their publishing business.

Summer fete to host live bands

BERMONDSEY: The annual Bermondsey Summer Fete will host a line-up of live bands and performers.

A £200,000 scheme has been set up to support single parents looking to get a job.

The Empowering You project has been launched by housing association L&Q and will be delivered in partnership with single parent charity Gingerbread.

Research by Gingerbread has revealed that the majority of single parents not in employment do want to work.

Around 84 per cent of non-working single mothers would like to get a paid job, become self-employed or train.

In addition 31 per cent of single mothers would work more hours with accessible childcare.

The project will offer single parents intensive support sessions on topics which will most benefit them including upskilling and mentoring, as well as developing access to good quality, affordable childcare and building awareness around making informed choices.

The project is being piloted in areas around London where L&Q has properties, with the intention to expand the scheme more widely and among other housing associations.

Firefighters called to ‘chemical smell’

BERMONDSEY: Firefighters were called to reports of a chemical smell at a flat.

Two fire engines and a pair of fire rescue units were called to a property above a shop on Southwark Park Road at about 1.24pm on Tuesday, August 29.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus investigated, but no chemical was discovered.

“We were called to a suspected chemical incident and carried out a sweep of the area,” a fire spokesperson said. “There were no elevated readings and we vented property. One person was assessed by London Ambulance Service but was showing no signs of symptoms. One female and one other male had left the neighbouring flats before the brigade arrived.”

The incident was over by 2.50pm.

HUNDREDS OF pupils found out their GCSE results last week, with provisional figures showing a five year long improvement in Southwark.

This summer’s cohort was the first to sit new, more demanding GCSEs in English literature, English language, and maths.

These three subjects were graded 9-1, rather than A*-G, and were expected to be more difficult than the previous year.

Initial results from half of secondary schools show that 71.8 per cent of Southwark children achieved 9-4 grades in the new English and maths exams.

This is 2.5 percentage points above the 2016 pass rate of 69.8 per cent.

Early indications suggest results for the

English Baccalaureate have improved by 2.1 percentage points. This year, attainment has increased to 37.9 per cent compared to 35.8 per cent in 2016.

Cllr Victoria Mills, cabinet member for children and schools, said: “On behalf of Southwark Council I want to congratulate all the young people who have collected their results today.

“These results are thanks not just to the hard work of the students, but also the commitment and support from parents and teachers. I want to wish them every success for the future.”

Overall in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, passes (grades C/4 and above) dropped 0.6 percentage points to 66.3 per cent this year.

In England, the English literature passrate fell 2.5 percentage points to 72 per cent, but in maths it rose from 61.5 per cent to 68.9 per cent.

Bacon’s on the up

THIS IS the first year pupils were graded from 9 to 1 in English literature, English language, and maths at GCSE level, rather than A*-G.

The first exams for most other new GCSE subjects will take place in 2018 and 2019, with all GCSE subjects graded in this way by 2020.

Between 2017 and 2019, GCSE exam certificates will have a combination of number (9-1) and letter (A*-G) grades.

By 2020, exam certificates will only contain number grades.

The new GCSEs are linear in structure rather than modular, with all exams sat at the end of a two-year course.

They are designed to be more challenging and the new grading scale

has more grades at the higher end to recognise the very highest achievers.

The Department for Education recognises the new grade 4 as a ‘standard pass’, which is the minimum level pupils have to achieve in English literature, English language, and maths.

If they fail to achieve a 4, pupils will have to continue to study these subjects as part of their post-16 education. There is no re-take requirement for other subjects.

In the new system, three number grades – 9, 8, and 7 – correspond to the current top A* and A grades, and grade 6 is slightly higher than a grade B. Grade 9 is the highest grade, set above the current A*.

The old and new GCSE grading scales

do not directly compare, but there are three points where they align: • The bottom of grade 7 is aligned with the bottom of grade A • The bottom of grade 4 is aligned with the bottom of grade C • The bottom of grade 1 is aligned with the bottom of grade G In general, pupils who would have got a C or above in last year’s exams were expected to get a 4 or above this year.

Employers, universities and colleges will continue to set the GCSE grades they require for employment or further study. The DfE is saying to them that if a grade C is their current minimum requirement, then the nearest equivalent is grade 4. A* to G grades will remain valid for future employment or study.

BACON’S COLLEGE, in Rotherhithe, showed significant improvement in this year’s results.

64 per cent of students achieved grade 4 or above in both English and maths – up from 56 per cent last year.

40 per cent of students achieved grade 5 or above in both English and maths – which is the new ‘good pass’ grade awarded for the first time this year.

A number of students achieved grade 9s (the new highest grade) – with six students gaining these hard-won grades in maths and seven in English.

Principal Chris Mallaband said the grades represented a significant improvement for the college and that he was delighted for the students.

John Sama passed his GCSEs with flying colours, despite losing his uncle in a car accident earlier this year.

The sixteen-year-old bravely pushed on with his studies without taking any time off school and came away with eleven GCSEs. “My uncle died in February, three days after my birthday,” said John.

“That made it hard to concentrate for a week or two but I didn’t miss any school.”

The teenager achieved an 8 in both maths and English literature, a 6 in English language, A*s in PE and RE, As in business studies, biology, physics, and history, a B in chemistry, and a C in French.

Simon Canniffe was one of only a handful of students at the school to achieve the top 9 grade in maths.

The student, who

lives in Deptford, also got a 5 in both English exams, an A* in biology, As in business studies, chemistry, physics, history, and Spanish, a B in food technology, and a C in RE. Katie Downing believes she was the only person at Bacon’s College to achieve a 9 in both English literature and English language.

She also left Year 11 with a 5 in maths, A*s in art, graphics, and RE, an A in geography, and Bs in biology, chemistry, physics, and French. “I was really worried about maths because it is not my strong suit but when I opened the envelope it was like I had been hit by a train because I wasn’t expecting to achieve so well,” she said. “The two 9s in English blew me away because when I spoke to one of the staff they told me it was really rare.”

One Elba success at Kingsdale

KINGSDALE FOUNDATION School believes one of its students has set a national record with 18 A*s or better in her GCSEs.

Year 11 student Elba Feo achieved 15A*s, two grade 9s (in maths and English) and a grade 8 in English literature. She also achieved a Distinction* at Level 2.

In addition, Iona Clark, the school’s deputy head prefect, was one of only 2,000 students in the country to achieve three grade 9s, alongside eight A*s, five A grades, and a Distinction*.

Overall, 76 per cent of the school’s grades for the new English and maths exams were a grade 4 (standard pass) or above, and 60 per cent a 5 (strong pass) or above.

Over one third of all grades were A*/A or equivalent (9-7), and two thirds of all grades were A*-B or equivalent (9-5).

A spokesperson for Kingsdale said Elba’s results meant the school had produced the highest-

achieving students this year at both A-level and GCSE, and the top student in the country at GCSE for at least three years out of the last four.

Elba has lived in Peckham all her life and was head prefect at Kingsdale.

She is looking forward to attending Kingsdale’s sixth form and wants to focus on science in the future.

She said she was so nervous when she picked up her results and her parents were speechless and cried when they heard how she’d done.

STUDENTS AND staff at City of London Academy had much to be proud of after 76 per cent of students achieved at least five A*-C passes, including English and maths.

And excluding English and maths, 86 per cent achieved five A*-C grades.

Executive principal Richard Bannister said: “We are delighted our students have achieved our joint best GCSE exam results, despite the Government this year increasing the academic rigour.

“These excellent results are testament to the dedication and commitment put in by our students and the hard work and inspiration provided by our teaching and support staff teams.”

Mamusu Kamara was over the moon to achieve the top grade 9 in English literature, as well as a grade 7 in maths, 6 in English language, A*s in biology, French, and drama, and As in physics, chemistry, and history.

She said: “I was shocked because in my chemistry exams I cried after the first one, as I honestly thought I would get a D. But I saw the A when I opened my results and then the 9 in English literature.

“I was really surprised and didn’t think I would get it [the grade 9] because all year I was sitting on 7s in literature and 8 in language. Towards the end I started putting in more effort and I don’t think I could have got a 9 if it wasn’t for my English teacher Miss Jones - she was my new teacher this year and she was really motivating.” The sixteen-year-old, who

Harry Daniell was celebrating after passing his exams with a grade 8 in English literature, a 6 in maths and English language, an A in music, and grade Bs in history, science, and additional science.

The sixteen-year-old plans to go on to study music technology, history, and psychology at A-level.

He said: “Before getting my results, I said to myself ‘you can’t be scared of something you have no control over’ – but when I turned up I was bloody terrified. I briefly spoke to my music teacher and she was really happy about the A.” Aimydj Elenda walked away with one of the highest marks for history in the school. literature, 7 in English language, 6 in maths, A grades in history, French, and economics, and Bs in PE, science, and additional science. “I was expecting that I had done well but I had doubts as I wasn’t sure what exact grades I got so walking in here I was like ‘is this really happening, is this real’,” he said. “I’m going to do sixth form and I’m taking economics, history, and French.”

Rasheedat Sanusi walked away from Year 11 with ten GCSEs. The sixteenyear-old, who lives in Woolwich, passed her exams with an 8 in maths and English language, a 7 in English literature, A*s in French and biology, As in history, physics, and chemistry, and B grades in music and sociology.

“I’m elated - I really did not expect those grades because I felt like some of the tests were a lot harder,” she said.

“I plan to study A-levels in French, biology, and maths, because those were the three subjects I really did enjoy doing during GCSE.”

Charter pupils amongst best in borough

PUPILS AT the Charter School, which serves south Camberwell and Dulwich, had among the best results in the borough this year.

Figures showed that 76 per cent of all students in year 11 gained a standard pass or above in both English and Maths (grade 4 to 9) , and that 39 per cent of all grades gained this year were A*/A or 79. They also revealed that 35 per cent of pupils achieved 5A*/A (or 7-9) grades in their GCSEs, up from 28 per cent in 2016 The school gave a special congratulations to Kitty Ollard, who gained fourteen GCSEs, all at A* or grade 9; Amy Hill who gained eleven GCSEs, all at A* or grade 9; and Clara Neather who gained thirteen GCSEs, including nine at A* and two at grade 9 in English and Maths Also among Charter’s top performers were: Joe Amadi, who got seven at A* and two at grade 9 in English and Maths; Eva Blair, who achieved six A* and two at grade 9 in English and Maths; Louis

JAGS’ 93% A*s and As

STUDENTS AT James Allen’s Girls’ School were celebrating after they “knocked it out of the park”.

The Dulwich school’s achieved a pass rate of 93 per cent at A* or A. On average, students achieved seven A*s each, with eighteen girls achieving A* in every subject.

Among the notable successes was the students’ performance in STEM subjects, where over 95 per cent of results in physics, biology, chemistry and maths were an A* or A. English grades were also particularly strong with 96 per cent A* or As, and there was further success in a broad range of foreign languages, including French, Chinese, Japanese and Russian.

Headteacher Sally-Anne Huang said: “We are all so proud of Year 11. They knocked it out of the park and I can’t wait to have them in our sixth form.”

Julia, who achieved eleven A*s, said “I’m going to study A-level courses in biology, chemistry, maths, and English and I'm very excited about the opportunity I’m taking for an Extended Project Qualification, probably biology related and possibly focusing on marine toxins.”

Sophia was also celebrating after

achieving eleven A* grades and credited the teaching staff for the support their support. “They are really encouraging and always available to help you understand things better,” she said.

Haleema achieved ten A*s and drew inspiration from two work experiences she arranged for herself in an east London hospital this summer.

“I got a placement in a psychiatric unit sitting in with consultants, doing ward rounds and so on. I learnt how gently the doctors need to make contact in order to build their relationship, so that their patients will trust them enough to tell them things.

“Mental health is such an important part of your character, it’s losing its stigma now but I think we still need to be more proactive and less reactive in promoting mental health and providing enough services for young people and adults.

“I’m going to continue studying biology, maths, chemistry and Spanish.

“Spanish is where I am really myself.

I’ve always really enjoyed learning languages; perhaps because my first language is Urdu and we speak it at home.”

Students ‘excelling’ at Harris Bermondsey

STUDENTS ARE celebrating at Harris Academy Bermondsey after achieving top grades in their GCSEs. Thirty students at the girls’ school achieved eight or more A/A* or 7-9 grades in their GCSE exams and 63 (40 per cent of all students) achieved five or more A/A* or 7-9 grades.

Sacred Heart celebrates ‘outstanding’ results

SACRED HEART Catholic School welcomed the School Standards Minister as a special guest on results day.

Students at the school were celebrating after 80 per cent achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including a ‘standard pass’ of grade 4 and above in both English and maths.

Meanwhile, 60 per cent of pupils achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C, plus a ‘strong pass’ of grade 5 and above in both English and maths.

Last year Sacred Heart ranked 15th in the whole country for ‘Progress 8’ – the government’s headline progress measure. This year’s provisional Progress 8 measure of 0.85 puts the school on course for more good results when these progress figures are confirmed in November.

Nick Gibb MP congratulated students on their success. “Today, hundreds of thousands of sixteen year olds find out the results of two years or more of hard work and study,” he said.

Headteacher Serge Cefai said: “Sacred Heart has become accustomed to outstanding GCSE results and these remarkable figures are no exception.

“Given the introduction of new qualifications and a new grading system

STUDENTS AT Alleyn’s School were celebrating after following in the footsteps of last week’s sixth formers, with record GCSE results.

Year 11 leavers picked up results that included an impressive rise in the percentage of students achieving more than ten A* grades.

A total of 67 per cent of all grades achieved were at A*, with 92 per cent of all grades at A* or A. Of the grades awarded to the 142 pupils who make up the 2017 cohort, 98 per cent were A*, A or B. A significant 92 pupils achieved all A* and A grades, with 33 individual pupils securing ten or more A* grades.

Globe Academy think the world of their pupils

GLOBE ACADEMY in Elephant and Castle said it was “immensely proud” of its increase in the number of students passing the ‘EBacc’ group of academic subjects most valued by universities and employers.

Deborah Agboola, from Walworth Road, earned two 9s in English Literature and English Language, an 8, four A*s, 2 As, one B and Distinction. Her ambition is to study Civil Engineering at either Oxford or Cambridge.

She said: “I’m feeling happy, content and excited. I motivated myself and had help from all of the teachers.

“They helped me with calming down; they made sure that I wasn’t missing out on anything. I would thank the teachers and myself for working hard.

“I feel like Globe is a very comforting place. Even though I came in year 9, I felt everyone at Globe was a big family. It makes you want to be better and make everyone around you proud.”

Globe’s head girl, Memunat Bakare from Hillingdon Street in Walworth, opened her envelope to find a 9, an 8, a 7, two A*s, three As, two Bs and a Distinction.

“I am very happy, relieved,

thankful and grateful,” Memunat said. “My family is really proud of my results, they are also excited. I just want to eat all day to celebrate.

“I’m so grateful that my hard work paid off. I would like to thank to Ms Sikuade for bringing such positive environment to Maths, giving us support and hope, making us believe that we can get those top grades without doubting us for one minute even though Maths GCSE was so incredibly hard.”

Eduard Bruchner, from Mitcham, spent most of his school life learning

to speak English, but came out the other side with a 9 in English Literature, two 8s, three A*s, two As and two Bs. “I moved here just over three years ago from Romania,” Eduard said.

“Teaching style is very different in the UK. “My horizons expanded so much at Globe. There isn’t one job that I can do; there are thousands of jobs, thousands of programmes and everyone can apply for these, but it’s all down to having the right mind set.”

‘Another excellent Notre year’ at Harris Dame Girls East Dulwich delight

HARRIS GIRLS’ Academy East Dulwich had “another excellent year”, with a quarter of grades in English literature at the new 7-9 grade.

And the academy’s Ebacc score (A*C or 4 and above in the core academic subjects) of 40 per cent was significantly above the national average of 23 per cent.

In science, more than half of the girls who took Triple Science (biology, chemistry and physics) achieved an A* or A. Meanwhile, 100 per cent of students who took the Latin received an A* or an A. Among the school’s top students were Bethany Hall, who got a grade 9 in English language and a grade 8 in English literature, with two A*s, four As, one B, and Distinction*.

Paolo Gomes, who speaks English as her second language, obtained six A*s, two As, a grade 8 in English literature and a 9 in maths.

Josh off to Eton!

A GLOBE Academy pupil from Elephant and Castle will soon be starting at the world-renowned Eton College after collecting his GCSE results.

Josh Adeyemi was offered a scholarship worth £70,000 to study at the famous all-boys boarding school in Windsor, attended by the likes of princes William and Harry, and former prime minister David Cameron.

Josh told the News his results: a grade 9 in English Literature, 8 in English Language, a 7 in maths, A*s in Geography and Business Studies, two As in science, and a C in French.

When he was offered the place, he said: “I was ecstatic to say the least.

“Between February 6 and 9 I was there to take three tests and do six interviews. They were all really rigorous. I arrived there and we had an hour to look around, then straightaway we were doing a maths exam.”

The Camberwell student has picked biology, geography, economics and politics to study at A-level.

Josh only found out about the scholarship after reading about last

year’s local Eton scholarship winner, Ahmed Roble, who moved to the allboys private school after completing his GCSEs at Walworth Academy, with four A*s, four As and two Distinction* grades.

“Seeing that Ahmed got into Eton after going to a school like mine made me realise it was possible,” he said.

ST SAVIOUR’S and St Olave’s head teacher, Catherine May, told the News her school had 9s in all three subjects, and more than double the national average number of grade 9s. And its provisional figure for 4+ [or C+] was 85 per cent.

Catherine said: “I’m absolutely thrilled for the girls and the staff because we have all worked really hard. With the changes to the exams and the numbering, these grades have never been awarded in this way before, which made things much more difficult. There was a lot more anxiety and nerves around the country, but I think our girls have outdone themselves.”

Esther Akinyele bagged 9s in English Literature and Maths, an A in English Language, and A*s in all her other subjects.

She said: “I’m very surprised. I was really scared and never expect to do well in exams and I was struggling before.

“I want to do Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths at A-level, and I want to go to university. I called my parents straightaway and they said they were proud of me.”

Sharon Amukamara, from Nunhead, had a 9 in English Literature, 8s in Maths and English Language, and A*s in History, Biology, Physics, Religious Studies, and Chemistry, whilst her lowest mark was only an A in German.

“English was the subject I had the most problems with, so the 9 really shocked

Maths and English Language exams by getting a grade 9 in both. Then she had A*s in History, French, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Religious Studies, and a grade 7 in English Literature.

For A-levels, she picked Maths, Psychology, French and Economics.

Walwor th Academy beat predicted grades

WALWORTH ACADEMY principal Yvonne Powell told the News her school achieved a Progress 8 result of 0.4. This means that on average the school’s pupils beat their predicted grades by nearly half a grade in every subject.

And she confirmed that 60 per cent of all pupils achieved an A*-C or (9-4 for Maths and English) in at least five subjects.

Eight students achieved grade 9 in English and seven students got a 9 in Maths. Twelve students achieved grade 8 in English Literature or Language, and nine students got grade 9 in Maths.

22 per cent of all grades were an A or A* or grade 8 or 9.

Jack Burt, from Southampton Way in Camberwell had 9s in Maths and English Language, and A*s in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Spanish, with an A in History and a 7 in English Literature.

Road chaos in Camberwell

BACK IN 2015 Southwark consulted on a major scheme for Camberwell that included reintroducing the right turn from Denmark Hill into Coldharbour Lane, eliminated all right turns from Camberwell New Road into Denmark Hill, by rerouting buses via Medlar Street, and generally spreading bus stops over a much wider area.

TfL are currently consulting on the Camberwell New Road / Camberwell Church Street element of the 2015 scheme, as detailed in last week’s Southwark News (17/8/17), but this only goes a few metres up Denmark Hill and leaves the buses only right turn from Camberwell New Road into Denmark Hill in place. Tfl’s consultation made it quite clear Southwark were responsible for works to the remainder of Denmark Hill.

As there has been no consultation from Southwark on any proposals to Denmark Hill only undertakings to proceed independently with Orpheus Street and the reintroduction of the Coldharbour Lane right turn I was surprised to see in the Evening Standard on Monday (14 /8/17) that Southwark had approved £2.5 million road works for Camberwell. Research revealed that a scheme for Denmark Hill either side of the Coldharbour Lane junction had been tacked on to their “pocket spaces” proposals that had been extensively consulted on.

Study of the Orpheus Street approved, without public consultation, scheme reveals a potentially disastrous plan.

The left turn is already dangerous (it’s where cyclist Esther Hartsilver died) and is very difficult for buses and large vehicles to turn when buses are parked on their stand immediately round the corner. Where Tfl in Camberwell Church Street are proposing to move the St Giles bus stop west from Vicarage Grove to improve safety for left turning cyclists, Southwark at Orpheus Street propose the complete opposite by installing a bus stop right on the corner, where the crossing is at present. In addition the entrance to Orpheus Street is to be narrowed and receive a raised table while leaving the existing bus stand in place to close to the corner.

While Tfl claim their proposed works will make a 40 per cent improvement in safety, in my opinion of Southwark’s approved changes at Orpheus Street will make it 100 per cent more dangerous for all road users. As a motorist it’s already hazardous to turn left into Orpheus Street with only a few meters left lane run up. With buses parked right up to the corner, and no run up it will be disastrous. While as a pedestrian crossing Orpheus Street at present from the Post office to Butterfly Walk I only have to watch out for illegally right turning vehicles with the existing crossing stopping left turning vehicles, with the crossing gone and unable to see approaching left turning vehicles along with the danger from illegal right turns crossing will be a

nightmare.

Hopefully Southwark will reconsider.

How about naming park Gulliver’s Fields?

REFERING TO the newly named Mayflower Park on the Fisher FC ground at Lagado Mews and Salter Road, Rotherhithe SE16

May I draw your attention to the opening lines (below) of Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift “The author of these Travels, Mr. Lemuel Gulliver, is my ancient and intimate friend . . . About three years ago, Mr. Gulliver growing weary of the concourse of curious people coming to him at his house in Redriff” And to mention that Lagado is here in fictional Balnibarbi, and is namechecked as a mews off Salter Road, SE16.

Must Rotherhithe stretch the fiction so much that our own Mayflower ship which left Redriff near St Mary’s church in 1620 to take the Separatists and Merchant Adventurers to the New World must also deliver Gulliver to Balnibarbi one hundred years later, in 1726.

Whatever the official name, some will nevertheless call the park Gulliver’s Fields in honour of our great (fictional) adventurer who is barely acknowledged here, while the international Mayflower 400 events in 2020 will still be spoilt for choice for Mayflower named and themed locations in Rotherhithe.

Jonathan Swift should be celebrated WHAT’S IN a name?

A label a particular place is suited to receive. Thereby helping people to develop a sense of place through experience and knowledge of a particular area.

A sense of place emerges through knowledge of history, geography and geology of an area, its flora and fauna, the legends of the place and a growing sense of the land and its history after living there for a time.

Why one then may ask did London Borough of Southwark decide to arbitrarily name the new park in the heart of an area with names like Lagado - Mayflower?

Any new, green, sizeable public space is a very welcome addition to SE16.

However, London Borough of Southwark’s failure to seize the unique opportunity to celebrate and promote Gulliver and Jonathan Swift’s connections with Rotherhithe and create a park that would stimulate an interest in education, travel and adventure is something I fear the community will not pardon.

GP services pushed to brink of collapse

WHILST THE announcement by the NHS to launch a new pilot in South East London to recruit more GPs from overseas will provide some much-needed relief for general practice in the short term, it does not go far enough to address the recruitment crisis underpinning general practice.

Overseas doctors make a valuable contribution to the NHS and will undoubtedly alleviate some of the pressure on general practice in the region as staff shortages have left many practices struggling to provide enough appointments and services to the public.

Yet despite repeated promises from the government, the latest figures show only a marginal increase of barely one per cent in the GP workforce in England and many that do work in the NHS are considering quitting the profession as the added stress of working under increasing pressure takes its toll.

To turn around this desperate situation, and both attract doctors trained in the UK as well as from overseas, the government must take urgent steps to reduce the unsafe workload burden carried by GPs and support them throughout their career so as to encourage them to stay before GP services are pushed to the brink of collapse.

VERY PART of the borough has been affected by the increase in moped and motorbike enabled crime in recent months.

These crimes are shocking and distressing and the growth in their numbers is rightly a cause of concern for residents in my constituency. It needs an urgent response.

Tackling moped and motorbike enabled crime effectively means reducing the ease with which mopeds in particular can be stolen, identifying stolen mopeds and motorbikes as soon as possible and taking them out of circulation, taking sensible precautions in our day to day lives, as well as giving the police the resources and support that they need to tackle the offenders.

One of the major steps forward in reducing the volume of car crime, was manufacturers beginning to take responsibility for producing vehicles with decent levels of security. Too many mopeds in particular have unacceptably low standards of security, making it far too easy to steal a vehicle which can then be used to commit further crimes.

The government must call time on manufacturers producing shoddy mopeds which take just a few seconds to steal. We also need more secure locking points to help responsible drivers park their mopeds and motorbikes securely.

Since 2010 Southwark has lost more than 200 police officers, as well as high numbers of police community support officers and this has made the job of the day to day policing of the borough much harder. The cuts to our local Safer Neighbourhood Teams have reduced the level of proactive policing. We need more proactive searches to identify stolen mopeds and motorcycles and remove them from our streets.

In Parliament Labour is calling for a review of the law, after police have warned that they are unable to properly pursue members of organised gangs on mopeds because they risk being prosecuted for dangerous driving.

Policing must always be proportionate and carefully judged, but the current approach is allowing criminals to behave with impunity, believing that they can get away with these distressing crimes, and it is time for an urgent review to ensure an effective response.

Southwark Park’s seen a lot of action!

ON JUNE 19, 1869, the gates of Southwark Park swung open for the first time, giving local people a much-needed space to breathe.

As then Southwark MP Austen Layard said when the park was first opened: "We now see the park at its worst. But the time will come, when our children are become men and women, that these trees which have been planted today will have grown to maturity and this park will then be a glory to Southwark."

And indeed, though somewhat harshly, 80 years later a book on South London said that the park banished "into insignificance the vulgarity of the miserable town outside its boundaries."

Today, the park stands 148 years old, and has grown and matured much in the intertwining years. It has seen hardship, heroics, excitement, tragedy and celebration.

The tale of the park starts at its conception. In 1856, Bermondsey residents collected a petition of 250 signatures calling for the building of a local park, but it took eight long years of campaigning before the

Southwark Park Act of 1864 promised a park would be built in the area. And no sooner had it opened its doors than the park was threatened; the Metropolitan Board of Works, which controlled the park, immediately began selling off land in the park for housing, a policy that was only reversed after three years of campaigning by the Southwark Park Protection Committee.

While the park was a place of festivities in those days - over 3,000 people attended a cricket match between Southwark Park Cricket Club and the Metropolitan Police in 1871 - it wasn't long before crime made its appearance.

It started innocently enough. In 1874, the Board of Works received complaints about crowds behaving badly.

Park superintendent Charles Dennis wrote of the affair: "Unfortunately our neighbourhood is a hot bed of foul language, it forms the greater part of the general conversation and is used by the merest of children, often to the delight of the older ones and even their parents."

At least two men were later found guilty of using abusive language in the park, were fined four shillings each and were bound over to the sum of ÂŁ5 to be of good behaviour.

It wasn't long before abusive behaviour became a trifle, though.

The first recorded death in the park was that of an baby boy, found dead in a closet where it had been abandoned after a violent blow to the head.

That unnamed boy may have been the first, but he was far from the last.

Only a year later a man described as "of respectable appearance" shot himself.

And suicides have been far from the only source of unrest. In August of 1911, over 15,000 dockers, lightermen and transport workers gathered to demonstrate, and a nervous government set up a military camp in the park as a precaution.

When, the next year, a young child was killed at Millpond Bridge during clashes with police, several of the transport workers formed their own civilian police force, numbering some 500 men.

But if these tensions have marred the history of the park, then some almost miraculous saves have restored it. In 1914, a gardener received a commendation for saving a boy from drowning, and not one, but three planes crashed in the park in the years between the world wars, none of them fatal.

In one of those crashes, in 1924, a Royal Air Force aeroplane crashed on a small three-corner piece of fenced turned ground called "the triangle", not even a hundred yards from where several youths were playing football. Incredibly, no one was hurt.

This golden age couldn't outlast the Blitz, however. The outbreak of the Second World War saw the southern end of the park closed for military purposes, and trenches and air raid shelters installed in the north.

The park became part of the war effort, used for activities and entertainment that would hopefully spur on locals' morale.

Among the many efforts, a community singing scheme was set up in the park shelters, and the

Bermondsey Holidays at Home Council ran a programme in the park consisting of "running races for men and women, tugs of war between the services, sack races, egg and spoon races, three legged races, and pillow fights for boys."

The park is perhaps more famous for being featured in a piece of Nazi war propaganda showing a German plane flying low over London.

After the war, parts of the park became given over to food production, and it wasn't until 1950 that it began slowly becoming the park we know today.

In 1949, in his book "South London", Harry Williams, no fan of Bermondsey, said this of the park: "Bermondsey, for all its unenviable squalor, is lucky in one particular, its extensive and beautiful park. It is a place of stillness and peace - an almost unbelievable peace. The tall trees give it dignity and a curious impression of size out of all proportion to its true area of sixtythree acres."

And that doesn't sound too far from the park we know today.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works

by Power On Connections, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Burrell Street, between Bear Lane and Chancel Street (b) Meymott Street, between Blackfriars Road and Hatfields (c) Blackfriars Road, between Nicholson Street and Meymott Street

The alternative route for (a & b) as indicated by the signs displayed. (c) Southwark Street, Southwark Bridge Road, Borough Road.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

FISHER CAME out on top in the Battle of Bermondsey on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Stansfeld at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe.

Harry Draper gave the home side lead with a brilliant looping header in the eighth minute.

But the visitors fought their way back into the contest and levelled through Harry Gamble on 27 minutes.

But in front of an attendance of 191 – the sixth biggest across the level in the country – Dean Harrison’s side went back in front five minutes before the break through Ritchie Hamill.

Hamill caused Stansfeld more problems in the second half, and Fisher kept their opponents out to move up to sixteenth place in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division table.

Fisher’s next game is against is against Gravesham Borough. Kick-of is 3pm on Saturday, September 2 at St Paul’s.

In front of a Bank Holiday crowd of 1,866, skipper Beaney struck with just ten minutes left to seal the win for his side.

Tooting had gone ahead in the fifth minute when Den Clements made the most of some hesitant defending to run into the penalty area where he was fouled

by Michael Chambers. Billy Dunn scored from the spot.

However, it was Tooting who took a 5th minute lead when Dan Clements was able to capitalise on hesitant defending

they almost drew level when Beaney found Nyren Clunis at the far post but his cross eluded his team-mates.

Clunis then shot wide before Tooting almost doubled their advantage but Mike Dixon couldn’t reach Clements’ cross.

From the next Dulwich attack, Dumebi Dumaka was brought down on the edge of the penalty area and Beaney fired his shot the wall and inside the near post.

Hamlet were on top now and could have gone ahead a minute later, but Dumaka’s effort hit the post and Muhammadu Faal did the same moments later.

However, in the 80th minute, Clunis pulled a cross back to the edge of the box, and Beaney got their first to drill a low shot into the bottom corner.

Dumaka hit the post again late on but local bragging rights belonged to his side.

That result made amends for Saturday, when Hamlet went 2-0 up away to Leiston before conceding a 93rd-minute equaliser to Joe Jefford. Clunis and Sanchez Ming were on target for the visitors.

Those results leave Hamlet in tenth place in the Isthmian League Premier Division table, but just four points off Billericay in first.

SOUTWARK WILL once again be represented in the Greater London Darts Organisation (GLDO) Super League this season, playing home games at the Spots and Stripes (SE1 0NR).

Played on Monday nights, the 7a-side matches commence at 8.45pm and the season runs much like the football season, ending in May. There are sixteen teams in this season's league, all in one division playing each other home and away.

There are some changes on the squad front, as Lee Evans and Alex Spencer have joined new team Chiswick, Matt Wilson and Craig Searle have moved away and Eikichi Nakanishi has returned to his native Japan.

Joining the team are Sussex County player James Stephenson,

Middlesex's Chris Hogg returns after a spell with Vauxhall, and Dave Lee comes over from the folded Welling team.

Surrey superstar and IDL Champion of Champions Dave Parletti has been retained, along with Ben West, Jamie Loader, Ze Mario Portela, Steve Chambers, Jamie Butler, Dave Sans and Luke Nelson.

Lennie Wise scored the winner in the second half and a solid defensive performance saw them collect three points.

Stansfeld were the side on the front foot from the off and Ryan Hassan saw his effort saved in the fifteenth minute.

Billy Shinners then struck the post with a header, before, after a superb move involving Perry Holland and Harry Gamble the latter slipped the ball past the Lewisham stopper only to see hios effort bounce of the post.

Four minutes after half-time Stansfeld took the lead when a long throw-in from Joe Bannan was only cleared as far as the penalty spot, and Wise took aim and fired into the top corner.

Stansfeld kept up the pressure but were yet again denied by the woodwork, this time Michael McKenna’s free-kick in the 70th minute crashing against the crossbar.

Nonetheless the 50 came up in the tenth over, and it took the advent of James Bridgland to secure the breakthrough, as he took a wicket in his first over for the fourth time in as many matches for the first team this season.

Wickets for Lodwick and skipper Alex Gledhill reduced Malden to 81-3 after 20.2 overs, but this only brought in Will Sabey, who dominated a stand with Wilson that put on 143 for the fourth wicket in 23 overs.

Sabey made 92 of these off 85 balls before being bowled by Kamran Munawar. Wilson had by now reached 90, and he continued past his century before also falling to Munawar for 116,

off 132 balls. Wilson had been joined

by James Wackett, who lived up to his name by smashing 40 off 22 balls, including three sixes off one Gledhill over, before being stumped off the last ball of the innings.

This was Munawar’s second wicket of the over, and three wickets in his last ten balls had given him figures of 4-60 off nine overs. Dulwich thus claimed their second bowling point as Malden finished on a mammoth 299-7 off their 50 overs.

Ed Stolle and Matt Balch had advanced the Dulwich innings to fourteen after six overs when Michael Cottrell and Sabey each took two wickets in his fourth over. This left them reeling on 17-4, coincidentally

the same score that they had been reduced to in the first meeting between the sides.

A third wicket for Cottrell made it 265. Will Bancroft dug in, and helped Stolle double the score before falling in the fifteenth over with the score on 52, and Stolle himself went five overs later to make it 56-7. He had scored 44 of those runs, off 49 balls, while his first six partners had managed just nine runs between them.

The eighth wicket fell at 67, whereupon Gledhill took part in two partnerships that added 45 for the last two wickets. He played second fiddle to Munawar, whose 21 (off 26 balls) was the second highest score of the innings, in a ninth wicket stand of 22,

and then added 23 for the last wicket with Bridgland.

Cottrell returned to remove the latter for eleven (off twelve balls) and finish with 4-32 off 9.1 overs, while Gledhill remained unbeaten on fourteen.

Dulwich were dismissed in just 32.1 overs for 112.

Dulwich thus gain just two points from a match for the third week running, and have slipped back to ninth place after Bank of England secured their fourth consecutive victory. The final match is away to Old Rutlishians, who are just four points above them in eighth place. Victory for Dulwich would secure another year in Division 2, while defeat would almost certainly lead to relegation.

IF EVER a team came to The Den embodying the predictions of Neil Harris and anyone in his squad who has spoken about catching teams on the hop this season, Norwich City on Saturday were it.

One of the pre-season promotion favourites – and still 6/1 to go up – they began as if they would give Millwall real problems. Josh Murphy and Wes Hoolahan were particularly threatening, and they did carves spaces in and around Millwall’s box for shots.

Maybe it gave them a false sense of superiority, and their defending for the first two Millwall goals certainly gave that impression.

Steve Morison was asked last week if Millwall were playing a bit more football in the attacking part of the pitch this season, but he laughed off those pretensions, pointing out they were still partial to the odd diagonal ball or two despite the more sophisticated division.

Without someone as effective as Morison – who turned 34 on Tuesday – those long passes wouldn’t work as often as they do.

Morison has a knack of making the opponent standing behind him or

next to him seem invisible. When Shaun Williams picked up a loose ball in the 15th minute there was one place he immediately looked, diagonally to the edge of the opponents’ box, where Morison was waiting.

Canaries centre-back Marcel Franke went to challenge, but Morison, despite stooping, was still able to direct his header to Lee Gregory, on his 29th birthday. That was a bad enough piece of defending, but it was inexcusable that Russell Martin didn’t cover Gregory’s run and the striker slipped the ball underneath goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

It was as if Norwich had never looked at videos of how Millwall play, and they deserved their punishment. Except they had, and they still couldn’t deal with it. “I didn't see this result coming before the game, but I did quickly during the game.,” manager Daniel Farke said. “In general our behaviour in defence in the first half was horrible.

The mistakes were poor.”

“We spoke about how Millwall would play with long balls and who should go and win the headers. So it is really annoying these points determined the game, because we were sure we could defend these

situations.”

They were all over the place less than two minutes after the opener as their entire defence except right-back Ivo Pinto got sucked over to the left wing. Gregory won an initial header on the touchline before Wallace played the striker into the box.

Gregory appeared to have messed up the chance by playing the ball behind Aiden O’Brien, but O’Brien adjusted to lay the ball off for George Saville to fire home.

Norwich had started well, and Hoolahan had tested Jordan Archer with a low shot to the corner that the goalkeeper pushed around the post.

The last time he played at The Den, Archer made a horror error in front of watching Scotland assistant coach Mark McGhee to seemingly blow his chance of an international call-up.

But this was a display that justified last week’s decision by Gordon Strachan to include him in his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Two saves in particular stood out, in the first half when Portuguese international striker Nelson Oliveira turned and snapped a low shot that was on its way in before Archer sprung low to his right to divert the ball away from danger. In the second half he judged his angles perfectly to

deny Hoolahan.

At the other end Gunn had already conceded a third before the break.

Again, he could have asked why his defence allowed Wallace to advance without getting a tackle in, and it was a smart finish into the bottom corner by the former Wolves player.

Millwall, though with much less possession than the visitors, had been in control since going ahead.

There was one moment in the first half that typified what away teams can expect this season at The Den. That was when Williams robustly went in for a 50-50 tackle with Harrison Reed and left the on-loan Southampton midfielder limping around the pitch for the next few minutes.

Reed went off in the 59th minute, and so did Martin, with fans in the away end cruelly cheering the latter move.

But as if to emphasise it was a collective failing rather than individual ones, Shaun Hutchinson rose above a shattered defence in the 72nd minute to put a now rampant Millwall 4-0 up from Williams’ corner.

It was Millwall’s first win in the second tier since April 2015, and on this display there should be many more to come this season.

Morison – whose grandmother was born in Wales – won 20 caps between 2010 and 2012 and scored one international goal, after previously playing for England C while in the non-league.

Three of Millwall’s current squad – Jordan Archer with Scotland and Northern Ireland’s Conor McLaughlin and Shane Ferguson – are involved in World Cup qualifiers over this weekend.

The Millwall players not on international duty were given three days off after their 40 win over Norwich City on Saturday.

Morison admitted he envies his teammates who are currently away with their countries.

“You get the chance to play for your country, which is great,” he said. “The lads left behind will get a break, re-charge the batteries and get ready to go again.

“When you get back from an international break it’s pretty hectic.

“I’d love to be part of it. I know you don’t get the rest but you do get a rest in other ways, you have down-time and they look after you just as well if not better than at your club sometimes. You have excellent facilities.

“It would be great to still be involved but my time is done now. I look forward to having a rest. I think you know when your number is up.”

Morison celebrated his 34th birthday on Tuesday and has been planning for a postplaying career for some time.

“It’s all done now, it was a long slog,” Morison said. “I did the B in one year and went straight onto my A and did that in a year. That’s the timeframe that’s set out for the course. Obviously it can take some people longer.

“I’m buzzing to get it done. It’s in the back pocket and if ever I need to use it it’s there. I don’t need to worry about starting it when I finish. I’m happy to have managed to do it while I’m still playing.

“I’m proud of the achievement.”

Morison said the experience opened his mind up to a number of things, including the time of the year a footballer is born potentially affecting their development.

Studies have shown that, statistically, because of age group competition cut-off dates, there are a higher percentage of players in Premier League academies who were born between September and December than there are those born between May and August.

There was one other thing he had never had to worry about before – how to create a CV. “The courses that you go on, especially with the Welsh FA, they open your mind up to all sorts of aspects of the game,” Morison explained.

“There are lots of little things you wouldn’t have thought of. I’d never thought of doing a CV, for example. They

said, ‘Well, how does anyone know what you’ve done without looking into you?’

“That was one of the last things we

did. There are so many little things that they show you, taking you into the analytical side of the game, the physical side of the game from the kids, when they’re born.

“Most players in the football world are born within certain months. It’s crazy, you don’t know all this until you learn it.

“It’s so interesting. People develop at different times. The amount of info they have is amazing. There are loads of people you get to meet and learn from. The experience is very good.

“Now when I have a chat with the gaffer or coaches I have different perspectives.”

GLOVES OFF FOR ‘FANTASTIC’ SID

SID NELSON was given a standing ovation on his Yeovil debut last weekend – after helping the Glovers to a first clean sheet in seventeen games.

Yeovil conceded eight goals at Luton Town on the opening day of this season, and fifteen in total in their first four games.

Nelson signed for Yeovil on loan until January after seeing his firstteam chances limited at Millwall.

Yeovil boss Darren Way put him straight into his side in the centre of defence as goals from Rhys Browne

and Olufela Olomola sealed a 2-0 win over Coventry to move Yeovil up to twelfth in the League Two table.

Nelson was taken off in the 93rd minute, with most of those inside Huish Park rising to applaud his efforts.

Yeovil boss Darren Way was delighted with his new recruit.

“We brought in Sid, who I thought was fantastic, but we really defended well against a good team,” Way told his club’s website.

“I said from day one if we got the balance right between defence and attack, we’d end up winning games and to get a clean sheet plus how we defended as a team was fantastic.”

Also in League Two at the weekend, Harry Smith came on in the 78th minute, but couldn’t help Swindon avoid a 3-0 defeat at home to Crawley, who won for the first time in the league under manager Harry Kewell.

James Brown, meanwhile, was on the bench as Carlisle lost 4-1 at Lincoln.

In League One, Jimmy Abdou played 90 minutes in midfield as Kwesi Appiah and Andy Barcham struck in the first half in AFC Wimbledon’s 2-0 win over Doncaster.

In the National League on Saturday, Jamie Philpot came on as a 65thminute substitute as Woking lost 1-0 at Wrexham.

RYAN TUNNICLIFFE says he had to cram pre-season into two weeks – and admitted he would have looked “terrible” had he been thrown into the first-team fray too early.

Tunnicliffe has yet to play 90 minutes since joining from Fulham in the summer, but got more competitive action under his belt in Millwall under23s’ 1-1 league draw with Sheffield Wednesday at The Den on Monday.

Tunnicliffe played in a different system as Development Squad boss Kevin Nugent set his side up with a diamond in midfield.

Kris Twardek put Millwall ahead from the spot after Noah Chesmain had been fouled, before James Murphy levelled before the break.

“I’ve settled in quite well, it’s a good bunch of lads and they make it easy,” Tunnicliffe told the News after the game.

“I was joining in with the sessions and doing a little more afterwards. It was like cramming a six- or seven-week preseason into a two-week block.

“I did all that as well as getting to know the lads along with the individual stuff to get up to speed.

“The gaffer had told me it would be a two-week period before I was ready for games. I had that in mind before I came in the door that I wasn’t going to be

involved immediately and I had to work as hard as possible so that when I was called upon I was ready to go.

“I went to every game to support the lads. I was itching to get going, especially when you see the pre-match warm-up, you wish you were involved.

“It was a tough summer and I knew myself I wasn’t fit enough to play. I would have looked a terrible player if I had been thrown in immediately! That wouldn’t have been the right thing for me.

“It was great to get that first start at Reading and then come on against Norwich in a winning performance and feel The Den’s atmosphere. It was nice to bed in that way.

“I think we weren’t getting the rub of the green in earlier games. But as you saw Saturday when the chances do fall our way we will take them. We beat a very good Norwich side quite comfortably.”

It was put to Tunnicliffe that making his debut against Reading in the EFL

Cup was an ideal way to begin his Lions career as the competition wasn’t a major priority.

“You would think that, wouldn’t you?” he joked. “I’ve played a lot of games so I wasn’t that nervous, but it wasn’t the best game to get involved in in one way, because we know that they keep the ball.

“In another sense it was a good game because I had to do a lot of running and fitness-wise it was very good for me. It was a tough one for my first start, but I felt fine after it.”

It was a different result last Saturday, with Tunnicliffe coming on as Millwall strolled to their first league win this season.

He said: “There are obviously no easy games in the Championship. But we were 3-0 up and I was ready to come on when Hutchie [Shaun Hutchinson] made it four. It ever there was an ideal game to come on in it was that one.

There were fifteen minutes left so it was just about seeing the game out and being professional.

“I pride myself on being able to run around and do the gritty stuff for the team. The fans enjoyed it as well, so it was a good experience.”

Jordan’s Scot new lease of life after international call

JORDAN ARCHER’S call-up

by Scotland boosted his confidence before the meeting with Norwich City last weekend, his boss Neil Harris believes.

Archer is in a senior international squad for the first time as Gordon Strachan’s Tartan Army take on Lithuania and Malta on September 1 and September 4.

Conor McLaughlin and Shane Ferguson are also with Northern Ireland as they face San Marino and Czech Republic.

Archer kept his second clean sheet in a row in the Lions’ 4-0 win over the Canaries.

“I’m always pleased for my players when they get the opportunity to represent their country,” Harris said. “It’s a great achievement.

“I thought Jordan’s performance last Saturday showed a man with added vigour and confidence in his game. He looked about as commanding, composed and authoritative as he has done in his whole time as a Millwall goalkeeper.

“He made some good solid saves and some top saves at key moments.”

SO, IT’S that time again for me to write down what I've been up to since my last column. Where do I start?!

August 12 will go down as one of the proudest days of my life. Following a few months of careful planning, and a couple of small wobbles along the way, it finally all went to plan.

Just two weeks before, I had two phone calls telling me they didn’t really want any fuss but would still come to The Den. I have to say a huge ‘thank you’ to John Berylson and the other directors of our club for inviting the four fans and their guests to be our special VIPs for the first home game of the season. They enjoyed hospitality in the chairman’s room and then went off to the directors’ box to watch the game in the comfy seats.

The day had been planned for weeks.

We were to take them down to the tunnel for about 2:40pm, where they would get to meet the players as they come off from their pre-match warmup, then John and myself would go onto the pitch and bring them all out.

Then they were each to be handed a prize which every Millwall fan would

cherish: a genuine League One play-off final winners’ medal. I must once again say a big ‘thank you’ to Steve Kavanagh for getting four extra medals made for these heroes of ours.

Then it was to be back up to the directors’ box where, at half-time, waiting at each of their tables would be a limited-edition signed shirt in a special box with a place for that medal of theirs.

Also, they all got a 2017-18 season ticket. .

Well, these plans, all carefully made, nearly didn’t go as they were meant to.

On the day itself two of the four decided they really didn’t want to go pitch-side, which was of course absolutely fine. It was their day after all.

All the way up until 2.43pm they weren’t coming onto the pitch but

whatever a few of our players said to the guys must’ve worked. Positioned just at the front of the tunnel I heard Deano Standing call out their names so I signalled to Roy, Grant and then Darren and Gerard, and they all moved forward and came out onto the pitch which caught me off guard, so much so that I missed my cue for the photo and handing them their medals with John.

That day was so emotionally charged and it’s one I will never forget, particularly for the noise you made. It was like nothing I've heard at The Den before and made me so proud to support Millwall.

I think the signings we’ve made over the course of the summer are already proving to be great additions to our team and having them completed before the competitive games began always helps with building team spirit.

Last Saturday, we finally got the result we’ve deserved, and what a great birthday present for Lee Gregory on the day he turned 29. It’s just a shame that the international break has come on the back of a positive and momentumbuilding win.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has said the transfer splurge in the Championship this summer is “ridiculous” – but insists his players will “embrace” the challenge of competing with big-spending sides.

There has been a flurry of transfer activity involving multi-million pound deals in the second tier this week before Thursday night’s transfer deadline.

After the international break, Millwall travel to Wolves on Saturday week for their next game

in the league. Wolves spent a Championship record £15million on Ruben Neves this summer, after breaking their club record a year ago on Ivan Cavaleiro.

Asked this week if he would like to have similar funds, Harris replied: “Everything brings complications whether you’ve got 15 million or 15 pounds. They’re in a position at the moment, same as Norwich and Bristol City in terms of infrastructure, where they have spending ability.

“Grant Hanley has signed for Norwich, what a player he is at this level. Sone Aluko goes to Reading for over £5million, [Nouha] Dicko going to Hull for £3.5millon, it’s absolutely crazy.

“So much will happen at this level between now and Thursday night, it will be ridiculous.”

After last Saturday’s 4-0 thumping of Norwich, Millwall forward Aiden O’Brien said the Lions will fear no side this season, despite being one of the lowest spenders in the division.

Harris agrees with his player.

He said: “Going to Wolves next weekend, does it worry us? No, not a chance. It inspires us and we look forward to it.

“Aiden’s right, we won’t fear it.

We’ll go and give a good account of ourselves and enjoy it. Is there pressure on us to go and perform at Wolves? No. “There is pressure from me on my

players, too right. To put in the same level of performance as they did against Norwich and Bristol and so on. I expect that every game.

“If we get that in every game, we still, as we saw against Forest or Ipswich, won’t always get the reward against massive clubs.

“But it’ll give us the opportunity to compete in every game.

“Does it bother me that Wolves have spent £15million on one player, £8.5 on another? No, good luck to them, they’ve got the ability to be able to do it.

“They’re a club far too long at this level and they probably deserve an opportunity to go to the next one.

“We embrace it and look forward to the challenge.”

Bacic has gone to Portsmouth to link up with former Lions boss Kenny Jackett.

Millwall have replaced him with Paul Tanner, who arrived from Norwich City after spells with topflight English rugby sides Wasps and Gloucester.

“Bobby has been brilliant for the club. I really enjoyed working with him as a player,” Harris said. “He’s a top physio and was a good character around the place. He had great experience within this club and in the profession.

“When I came in as a young manager it was great to work with him.

“It’s no surprise the first thing Kenny did when he got the job was ask to speak to Bobby. Bobby’s family is from down Portsmouth way so it was a great opportunity for him to go down there and work with two of his best friends in Kenny and Joe [Gallen]. We were more than relaxed with it.

“After nine-and-a-half years’ service Bobby had earned the right to make his own decision.

“We’ve brought in an up-andcoming young physio in Paul Tanner.

He comes highly recommended and my first impression is he’ll work well with us and slide straight into the role that Bobby has left.”
