VOTERS IN Southwark scalped Labour and the Tories in the European Elections last week as the Liberal Democrat’s unequivocal pro-Remain stance saw them outperform Labour in the borough for the first time since 2002.

With a high voter turnout of 41.3%, Sunday night’s borough-by-borough results showed a surge for the pro-EU Lib Dems and its ‘bollocks to Brexit’ campaign in Southwark, with 27,128 votes cast for its MEP candidates.

Labour came in second with 20,569, followed by the Green Party with 15,286.

The Brexit Party was fourth, with 9,072 votes.

Trailing behind were Change UK – The Independent Group, with 4,908; the Conservatives with 2,853; and UKIP with just 1,158.

The Liberal Democrats led across London and came second in the rest of the country, with 21 per cent of the vote gaining them fifteen seats in total.

But if the share of votes split across all proRemain parties – the Lib Dems, Greens, and Independent Group are added together – this puts Remain on top.

In London, the votes translate as three Liberal Democrat MEPs, two each for the Brexit Party and Labour, and one for the Greens – but none for the Tories.

Southwark may be a majority remain area, with huge support in favour of a ‘People’s vote’, but it also has a significant if politically unrepresented pro-Brexit population.

Reacting to the results, Leave-supporting readers said the results showed how Southwark had grown more ‘middle class’.

Reader Brenda Atkinson criticised the way London was often depicted as entirely proEU, commenting on our Facebook page: “I’m a Londoner born and bred, I voted out in 2016 and I voted Brexit party this time.

“You [Lib Dems] just happen to get the London vote because London is now a city full of immigrants.”

Another reader, Mark Horney, said: “I voted out in 2016 and I voted The Brexit Party on the 23rd of May. As a Londoner born and bred the Lib Dems do not speak for me.”

councillors nor MPs - this weekend’s results are nothing short of a kicking for Labour.

Southwark Liberal Democrat leader, Anood Al-Sameria, described the results as ‘one of the biggest upsets in Southwark’s political history’ and thanked voters for their backing.

“A year ago, Southwark Labour’s leader Peter John boasted they were on the verge of wiping us out entirely,” she said.

“Instead, we gained seats from them in the locals last year, and at this election we beat them by a big margin in Southwark, in London and across the country as a whole.

“Our clear positive message in favour of a Liberal London, a Liberal Britain, in a Liberal Europe clearly resonated and contrasted to their rudderless pro-Brexit policy.

“For us, it’s onwards and very much upwards.”

In the last eight years the Liberal Democrats have struggled to recover their foothold in Southwark since the collapse of their coalition with the Tories and losing their Bermondsey and Old Southwark seat,

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Responding to the results, council leader Peter John called on the leadership to change its view on a second referendum.

Neither he nor Southwark’s three Labour MPs risked career suicide by supporting any pro-Remain parties.

“These election results were disappointing for Labour, both in Southwark and across the country,” he said.

“Labour’s positon was not clear enough, and we lost the votes of many long term Labour supporters as a result.

“I hope that the Labour leadership hears the message sent by the electorate and moves to a Labour Party policy of backing a second referendum and campaigning to remain in the EU.” Helen Hayes said she had always represented her pro-Remain, anti-Brexit constituents by voting against Article 50 and for a second referendum, yet still voted along party lines last week. She said it was “painful to see voters turning to Lib Dems who colluded with the Tories to deliver

austerity, which has had devastating consequence for thousands of my constituents.”

She said both a second referendum and general election were needed: “A general election, will not, as things stand, resolve Brexit, and a second referendum will not change this toxic Tory government.”

After her party’s disastrous results, news Theresa May was standing down saw Camberwell and Peckham’s Labour MP, Harriet Harman, offer a lone voice in offering some praise.

Harman, who has been a vocal campaigner against the online abuse of MPs and a bullying culture towards women in parliament, tweeted to her followers: “She leaves the UK more divided and unequal but when a dedicated public servant leaves, look at achievements and not just failings, especially when they are a woman in what’s still a man’s world.

“I acknowledge the Prime Minister brought in improved, new laws on equal pay, human trafficking and domestic violence.”

A SLICE OF BISCUIT HISTORY

TALENTED SUGAR-CRAFT workers have unveiled a showpiece cake dedicated entirely to the history of Bermondsey’s Peek Frean’s Biscuit Factory – two years after they painstakingly recreated a replica of the Queen’s wedding cake.

Workers at the factory, off Drummond Road, made a six-foot tall cake for thethen Princess Elizabeth’s marriage in 1947.

A full-scale replica of the towering cake was made out of icing sugar by proud factory officials – but it was destroyed by vandals who broke into Rotherhithe’s Pumphouse Museum where it was being stored.

But thanks to the tireless work of the British Guild of Sugarcraft, and volunteers at the Peek Frean museum, another replica was made from scratch and officially unveiled in 2017.

Now, two years on, skilled British Guild of Sugarcraft members have returned to the museum to unveil an intricate showstopper of a cake – with each tier representing a different slice of local Peek Frean history.

Carolyn Harvey, who is chair of the guild’s Region 8, which covers London and the South-East, explained: “We did the base tier for the last cake, and everyone just enjoyed the camaraderie and learning new things while doing the Queen’s cake.

“So therefore it was kind of like, what’s the next thing?

“We’re probably looking at about 55 or 60 people who helped make the cake.”

Tiers of the cake were assembled by member groups of the region, with painstaking attention to details representing the Peek Frean history – even including the now demolished clock tower which stood close to the railway

line.

For example, one tier of the cake represents only things that can be found in the Peek Frean museum, explained one British Guild of Sugarcraft member, Justine, who oversaw the tier.

“The third tier represents things all from the museum,” she told the News, “so everything on there can be found in the museum.”

Another tier, the base tier, takes its inspiration from all of the Biscuit Factory’s distinctive biscuit tins – with designs ranging as far back as 1875, explained another guild member, Jackie.

A further tier is dedicated solely to the numerous sporting clubs and events

associated with the factory, including hockey, marathons and swimming.

The show-cake was first unveiled at an exhibition in Brighton earlier this month, to overwhelmingly positive reception.

“The reception has been amazing,” said Carolyn. “Lots of people stopped by our stand asking how on Earth it was done.”

The show-stopping cake is currently on display at the museum where it will take pride of place alongside the replica of the Queen’s wedding cake.

However, it will also be shown to other Sugarcraft guild members and enthusiasts as it is to be taken to the national exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC later this year.

Prison death of a defendant in Rocky Djelal murder trial

Elephant man on smuggling charge

AN ELEPHANT and Castle man has been charged after allegedly attempting illegally to smuggle four guns and ammunition through the Channel Tunnel into the UK.

Steven Landers, 55, of London Road, was charged with illegal importation of weapons after Border Force officers discovered four Heckler and Koch handguns and 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition in a BMW on May 19 at the Channel Tunnel terminal in Coquelles.

The National Crime Agency said the guns and ammunition were discovered in a bag underneath the carpet floor of the car boot.

Another occupant of the car alongside Mr Landers, Steven Mulroe, 41, of Battersea, was also charged with illegal importation of guns. The pair appeared at Margate Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (May 22) and were remanded in custody to appear at Canterbury Crown Court on June 24.

GREENING UP THE SQUARE

VOLUNTEERS HAVE greened up Herne Hill's Station Square with the help of new planters filled with garden waste collected from homes across London.

Volunteers including eight children from a special needs school in Dulwich, Turney School, set to work making the new planters from recycled scaffolding boards.

They then filled them with compost

donated by Veolia and made from garden waste collected across London at the planting sessions this Monday and last week.

The scheme is part of Freshview, a collaboration between Lambeth Council and Veolia whereby the waste collection company helps local volunteers with community projects aiming to improve their local environment.

The company's senior contract manager, Steve Verrier, said:"Freshview is a great example of the circular economy at work.

"We collect food and garden waste

from households, recycle it into compost and use it to fill planters for community projects.

"The planters are made from scaffold boards that would otherwise have been discarded, so it's great to be involved in projects that preserve and reuse valuable resources."

Lambeth Council's deputy leader, Claire Holland, said she hoped more people would come forward with ideas to improve their area as part of the scheme.

A MAN who had been due to stand trial charged with assisting an offender in the murder of Bermondsey man Rocky Djelal has died in prison.

Jason O’Rourke, 34, passed away while in custody at Belmarsh prison on April 2, the Prison Service told the News last week. “HMP Belmarsh prisoner Jason O’Rourke died in prison on 2 April 2019 and our thoughts are with his family and friends,” said a spokesman for the Prison Service.

“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman confirmed to the paper that it has opened an investigation into the death of Mr O’Rourke, as is standard procedure. However the report will not be published until after an inquest has taken place.

A CONTROVERSIAl new ‘garden tax’ will come into force across Southwark this weekend, despite widespread opposition from angered residents.

From Saturday, June 1, residents of kerbside properties will have to pay a £25 charge to have their garden waste collected by the council, rising to £30 per year after March 31, 2020.

And, although the service will continue to be weekly, the collection days may change to maintain ‘route efficiency’.

The Labour-run council has told residents of all 51,000 properties affected across the borough that the fee is necessary as ‘not everyone who receives it is making use of the garden waste service’ and that ‘it is fairer that only those using the service contribute towards the running of it’.

But this rationale has been slammed by homeowners, who say the new fee is simply a stealth tax on wealth to raise funds for the council’s increasingly cash-strapped coffers.

In leafy East Dulwich, homeowners and tenants alike were fuming about the extra cost, arguing not everyone uses libraries, schools, care homes or leisure centres but – regardless – contribute to public services, and that council tax is banded according to property values.

One homeowner queried how the exercise could save cost given the administration involved in chasing payments and removing and replacing different types of bins.

The Liberal Democrat opposition have also argued that rather than paying up, more people will just turn to fly tipping to dispose of their rubbish.

This view was supported by one angry resident in Peckham, Sarah Baldwin, who said: “We pay council tax for a wide variety of services, and our household certainly does not make use of all the services.

“I am perfectly happy to make contributions towards services I don't use because it is good for the community.

“In return, I expect others to

contribute towards the vitally important function of all forms of waste disposal.”

She went on to say that her small garden produces only ‘a few brown

paper sacks of waste a year’, but at least this contributes to the environment and biodiversity.

“Now we are being penalised for that,” she explained.

But as a winning auction prize at the theatre company’s annual fundraising dinner, bidders were given the opportunity to have the statue made into any local figure.

A winning £150 bid was submitted by Jon Dyer, of Bermondsey-based funeral directors FA Albin & Sons to have the statue made-over.

But instead of posing for the papiermâché portrait himself, Mr Dyer nominated the former MP in his place.

Sir Simon, who is chairman of London Bubble, professed himself to be a fan, joking: “What great work - even though a bit embarrassing for me to be a statue."

Michael Breakey, who leads a project affiliated to the theatre and came up with the auction idea, said: "People love a quirky lot at an auction. What could be more quirky than having your portrait painted onto Rotherhithe Man? “We knew that it would be irresistible!"

However, the Rotherhithe Man will soon take on another persona, said the theatre – although it has yet to be a woman.

A STATUE has been unveiled in the likeness of Sir Simon Hughes, the former long-standing Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, after a charity bidding war.

The uncanny statue is the unofficial mascot of the London Bubble Theatre company on Rotherhithe’s Elephant Lane, called the Rotherhithe Man. The Rotherhithe Man was born out of a production of Gilgamesh at the turnof-the-century, and has since donned many guises over the years.

Rape Crisis charity recognised after workload doubled

RAPE CRISIS South London has won a coveted award recognising the importance of its support work - especially given the number of women and girls referred for help has leapt by nearly 50 per cent in just one year.

Based in Croydon, the charity has now expanded its reach to cover Southwark, Greenwich, Bexley and Kingston after it found them to be lacking in existing support for survivors of sexual violence.

On Thursday, May 16, its team's hard work and dedicated support was highlighted as they won one of ten GSK Impact Awards at an annual ceremony, beating 370 other organisations from around the country and netting £30,000 in extra funding.

The awards, run in partnership with The King’s Fund, are designed to recognise the outstanding work of community-based health care charities.

Rape Crisis South London helps women and girls from age five and above who have experienced any form of sexual violence.

In the last year it has seen a huge increase in need, after 43% more

women were referred between July and September 2018 than the year before.

The charity gives counselling and emotional support, and also supports women as they navigate the justice system from reporting crimes to prosecution.

The charity's chief executive, Yvonne Traynor, said: “On behalf of all my staff and our clients, I am deeply honoured to be recognised by GSK and The King’s Fund for the high quality work that we do.

"We strive for excellence to provide the best possible service for survivors who have been through the worst experiences of their lives and it is deeply gratifying to have our standards recognised by these two esteemed organisations.”

A LOCAL boozer has launched a search to pay someone to go on a road-trip and attend events at pubs all summer long.

The Anchor Bankside on Park Street is advertising for an events tester, calling for a local to attend events to help shape their own events programme – and get paid £2,000 for it.

The chosen applicant will have to report back on their road-trip of pub events to the boozer, so they can plan their own entertainments and attractions.

GOOSE GREEN Primary School will launch its new 'Walking Bus' to tackle the toxic air pollution in East Dulwich on next month's Clean Air Day 2019.

Held on June 20, Clean Air Day aims to raise awareness about the dangerous levels of air pollution choking the UK and encourage everyone to take action.

Goose Green, like many primary and nursery schools in London, is on a busy main road and has seen pollution spike during drop-off and pick up times.

Although an engine-idling ban is in place across the borough, one of the school's long-term aims has been to get more kids walking to keep more cars off nearby roads.

To make this easier for parents and safer for children, teachers have come up with the idea of a 'walking bus' - with the added benefit of

upping the kids' exercise count.

Children will walk to school in a stream of pairs with adult volunteers 'driving' and 'conducting' the bus as they travel the same route picking up more kids on the way at designated stops.

The first trial will take place on June 20, one of many events across the country aimed at getting our politicians to take tougher action on the air pollution crisis.

As the News has reported, 44 places in Southwark failed air quality targets in 2017, including the sites of several primary schools.

Progress, however, is being made, and Goose Green Primary and Nursery School has become a leader in the campaign for clean air in Southwark.

A 'green screen' of pollutioncatching ivy placed around the school perimeter has successfully reduced the level of nitrogen dioxide - NO2 - in the playground by half, bringing these readings back within legal EU limits.

‘LETS MAKE SOUTHWARK ESTATES GREAT’

A NEW plan to make Southwark’s estates great places to live has been launched – with a £1 million pot of funding for its pilot sites.

Southwark Council’s ‘Great Estates’ initiative aims to help residents improve their estates and chose how money should be spent on community projects that benefit everyone.

The trial project will involve residents groups working with the council to set up their own estate improvement plan and then putting it into action.

One estate to inspire the project is Sceaux Gardens, in Camberwell, where residents including TRA secretary Liz Sipthorpe have been actively trying to get more people growing their own fruit and vegetables through a gardening project.

Liz says since they created new allotments five years ago, the project has helped teach children where their food comes from, get older people outdoors and enjoying the company of others, and also played a small part in trying to tackle food poverty.

And the added benefit, she says, is that the gardens look lovely too.

“The allotment improves the look of the estate and has had a much bigger impact as it brings pride about that bit of land,” she told the News.

“Children are growing their own vegetables for the first time and their parents can reduce their food bill a little bit.

“There’s joy in producing your own tomatoes, or beans, and it’s positive for your mental health, especially if you’re in a high rise block and don’t have outdoor space.”

Leo Pollak, the council’s cabinet member for social regeneration and new council homes, encouraged any one with ideas to get in touch.

“At the heart of this is a new licence for residents to work with the council to help improve the look and feel of the shared spaces in our estates, and a process for upholding new expectations to make sure our estates are safe clean and cared for.

city and we are calling on residents to come forward with new ideas – big and small – for how to improve the shared spaces in their estates.”

The Great Estates scheme also aims to identify sites for new council homes.

The council says pilot estates will be selected by a steering group of local

representatives and experts, and the plan developed in conjunction with the council will then be put in place towards the end of the year.

MAYFLOWER TOUR SITES APP LAUNCHED

A NEW app has been launched to give free guided tours of sites related to the Mayflower, including Rotherhithe.

The app uses GPS technology to notify users of places of nearby interest, including St Mary’s Churchyard and the Mayflower Pub to allow people to follow in the footsteps of the Mayflower Pilgrims.

Charles Hackett, the chief executive of Mayflower 400, said: “We’ve launched the app in the build-up to the Mayflower 400 anniversary year to help visitors get the best possible experience from visiting the sites that tell the stories of the Pilgrims’ origins.

“The app has been designed to take people on a Mayflower journey, telling the stories behind the places the Pilgrims were from and where and why they travelled.

Police appeal after ‘threatening train passenger referenced Bloody Sunday’ TRANSPORT POLICE have launched an appeal after a man waving a flag reportedly boarded a London Bridge train and threatened a passenger.

British Transport Police said in a statement that they are seeking further information about an incident in which a drunk man began acting aggressively on the train at around 8.30pm on Friday April 12.

The train was headed for Beckenham, in Bromley.

The man was with a woman, said officers, when he reportedly began acting aggressively to passengers while referencing Bloody Sunday.

The name is given to the infamous incident during the Northern Ireland troubles in which the British Army opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in 1972, killing thirteen.

The man is then alleged to have threatened a passenger after being challenged. Officers said they would like to speak to any witnesses, including one passenger who is thought to have recorded it on her phone.

A man, aged 29 from Beckenham, was arrested on suspicion of nuisance behaviour but has been released while officers carry out further enquiries.

TRANSPORT FOR London has been officially rapped for a series of fire safety breaches at London Bridge station.

The London Fire Brigade has served an enforcement notice on a TfL subsidiary for eight breaches of fire safety law, including failures to provide a suitable fire warning system, to maintain emergency evacuation routes and failing to review the fire risk assessment at the station.

The notice was served on April 10, but only recently made public. TfL has until June 5 to comply with the recommendations that the fire service has set out.

A TfL spokesperson said: “Safety is always our top priority, and we work closely with London Fire Brigade to ensure that our stations are safe for our customers and staff.

“We have met with them to discuss the issues that they identified and have taken immediate steps to address all of them.”

A CONTACTLESS donation point to homelessness charities has been unveiled at London Bridge station.

When tapped, three pounds is donated to a range of homelessness charities. The station is the first rail station the country to get one of the contactless donation points.

The move is a joint venture between TAP London, a non-profit which supports 22 homelessness charities, including Shelter, and Network Rail.

Polly Gilbert, who is the co-founder of TAP London, said that the collaboration would give the public an easy and effective way to help tackle homelessness.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has held its annual cabinet reshuffle without any major changes to its executive team.

Tooley Street’s executive of fulltime councillors largely remains the same, but with a few tweaked job titles. Cllr Richard Livingstone’s reflects a new emphasis on the climate emergency, as declared earlier this year.

Only two members have changed roles. Stephanie Cryan - formerly housing chief – and Kieron Williams – previously responsible for jobs, skills and innovation - have swapped portfolios.

RYE LANE should be open to traffic by Saturday, June 8, after gas engineering work was completed months ahead of schedule.

Gas company SGN said the mains work that led the Peckham road’s closure since the beginning of January had been completed and its team were now reinstating the road.

Pipes in better condition than expected and new techniques all helped speed up the replacement work originally planned until January 2020.

Currently Rye Lane is closed to cars, buses and cyclists between Hanover Park and Sternhall Lane with a diversion via Hanover Park and Consort Road, and temporary traffic lights in place near Copeland Road.

Glorious mud and finds

Michael Holland goes back in time with a veteran mudlarker to when woolly mammoths roamed Rotherhithe

I

SPOTTED Alan Murphy chatting on the Thames foreshore, a place where he spends much of his time and has for the best part of 30 year.

He directed me towards the stairs so I could get down to where he had already found an 18th century penny, a couple of cannonballs and several clay pipes - all before 9am. This is where I would interview one of London’s top Mudlarks.

Alan was born in Bermondsey but moved to Rotherhithe some 20 years ago. As a boy his playground was the empty warehouses and wharves. He fished by Tower Bridge and - to save his pocket money - collected ledgers lost by other anglers when the tide was out. He found dockworkers' hooks, knives and the ubiquitous clay pipes, all of which his dad would display in cabinets, because Murphy Senior also had a penchant for the Thames and its history.

Today Alan is one of the 52 official Full Mudlarks. He explained how you “go on the list” and spend many years recording your finds and regularly reporting to the Museum of London before you are officially

allowed to join the Society of Thames Mudlarks. Mudlarking is not something you could make a living at; for Alan it’s “an out of control hobby.” His wife calls him a hoarder, though he prefers “Thames recycler.” He donates many of his finds to various museums and projects. Some can be seen at Surrey Docks Farm where his hospital ship pottery is on view, while he also has a small exhibition in Sands Films.

“Most of the artefacts in the Museum of London come from mudlarkers,” he says. The hoarding, however, comes from keeping so many of his finds at home. His personal favourite find is an 11th century Viking coin.

“When we last moved my wife said ‘I don’t want the new house smelling like the Thames again’ so I keep a lot of the stuff in my workshop,” he says. The workshop is where Alan cleans and renovates any artefacts that require it, such as old padlocks or coins. It’s where he makes replicas of his original Mesolithic and Neolithic flint axes, using the same method as our Stone Age ancestors.

His knowledge is broad on kings

and queens, the different prehistoric ages and maritime history and he shares this wisdom at talks and foreshore trips for schools. Alan loves a cannonball and excitedly tells of the first hand grenades that were used in close quarters by boarding parties during some of the most famous sea battles.

The mudlarker’s ‘patch’ is anywhere from Vauxhall to the Thames Barrier, both north and south shores. There are strict regulations on how deep you can dig and it’s important to be registered because mudlarks are monitored at all times by the river police and the Port of London Authority, who identify Full Mudlarks by the number on their brightly coloured buckets. The bucket shows they are legally searching; stiff fines are handed out to those without permits.

showed me shipbuilders’ tools, tea caddy locks, and described the mayhem that cannonballs created when they pierced the side of a ship.

He spoke of our primitive forefathers making the weapons to hunt and the tools to butcher animals by the old Chambers Wharf and he showed me groats and ships’ nails and an array of plain and ornate clay pipes. Each exhibition piece, preserved in time

Last year Anna won the Instagram category of Totally Thames’ #ThamesLens competition with her picture of Rotherhithe at high tide.

“I love taking photos,” the former BBC foreign correspondent said. “Part of the pleasure isn’t just being on the river, it’s taking the picture of what I find and then sharing it on Instagram.

The online community is really good.”

Raised in London, Anna spent ten years abroad working in Uganda and Nigeria. “Whenever I thought of London, what I missed was always the river, particularly the south bank,” she said. “I came back to London to have children and when my youngest got to seven, I thought ‘I’m going to do mudlarking seriously.’ So I started going two weeks out of four.”

A mudlarking licence was introduced three years ago. “You used to be able to look with your eyes but not dig. Now

you can’t remove anything from the foreshore,” Anna said.

Anything older than 300 years must be taken to the Museum of London to be recorded. “One great find I had was an early 17th century seal, someone’s personal stamp, with a dove on it,” Anna said. “At the beginning I thought I discovered a fantastic find: a pair of doves on pottery but it’s actually a really common Willow china pattern from Victorian times and you find them absolutely everywhere.”

Things end up in the river for all sorts of reasons. “Landfill has been dumped from outside London. Inside London it was working docks, so you had people building boats, travelling on boats, ferries going back and forth. If it’s a ferry point, there’ll be so many pipes; they were one-use, so then people would throw them into the river,” Anna said.

On the south bank, the Elizabethan theatres would dump Tudor money boxes into the Thames.

“Old dolls are really freaky,” Anna said. “I found a silver coin from the early 1600s bent in an S-shape, which was a love token. And I know someone who found a penny with the word c**t scratched into it. I like anything that connects me with the humanity of people in the past.

“If I see a bit of smashed pottery, that connects me with the Georgians because

I’m really clumsy.”

Mudlarking is quite a solitary experience. “Most prefer to go on their own. At the height of low tide, you only have a 20 minute window. Occasionally I bring a garden trough but basically

I’m too lazy to scrape. People do take metal detectors,” Anna said.

“Each thing you find has its own micro story. The river is a magical place.”

Universal childcare is the missing part of our welfare state A CCESS TO affordable, quality childcare is essential for parents to able to work and it helps children get a good start in their life.

Yet after all the progress on childcare when Labour were last in government, working parents are now finding it harder to get the childcare they need.

Under this Tory government since 2010, the cost of childcare is rising faster than people’s wages. 1,000 Sure Start children’s centres across the country have closed and many more have reduced the services they provide.

And this is hitting hard-working parents in Southwark.

The Government’s scheme of 30 hours free childcare a week for 3 and 4 year olds is not working. Because The Government has failed to ensure that

funding keeps up with the rising costs of providing childcare for nurseries to actually deliver the extra hours of free care the Government has promised parents.

Providers are being asked to deliver more, whilst facing a real term funding cut between now and 2020. The current funding level was set almost 4 years and doesn’t take into account significant operating cost increases in that time, such as business rate rises, rent, increases to the National Minimum Wage and pensions.

This has left parents and child carers subsidising the Government’s new offer. Which is simply not sustainable.

If this funding crisis continues, more childcare centres will close. More parents will be unable to afford a childcare place meaning they will be unable to work and earn for their

family. This hits single parents and those on low incomes disproportionately hard.

I am backing the parent-led Early Years Alliance’s Fair Future Funding campaign and will continue to do all I can in Parliament to demand the Government properly funds universal childcare. All parents with children in primary school must have the certainty that childcare is available from 8am to 6pm.

Universal childcare is the missing part of our welfare state - a product of an old reality decades ago, where women did not get to go out to work, but stayed home to look after children.

We need a universal free childcare system to reflect the reality of parents’ lives today and to liberate parents from the expense and worry of juggling home and work.

HE WEATHER brought surprises during May – in the first two weeks temperatures dropped and a cold, blustery east wind brought heavy rain and hail showers!

June is the traditional start of summer; the Solstice falls on 21st and then days imperceptibly begin to get shorter! (Although not noticeable until August). In the meantime, there will be long summer days to enjoy.

June is usually fine and warm; although thunderstorms often arrive as temperatures begin to rise.

The main tasks in the garden; are keeping weeds under control, watering in dry spells and feeding/mulching plants. Daffodils and other spring bulb foliage will have died away; remaining dried leaves can be cleared.

One destructive pest that makes an appearance at this time of year, on houseplants, window boxes and in the garden, is the vine weevil. This mottled dark brown beetle strolls around waving its antennae and is usually seen on leaves; their larvae do the damage munching away at roots. They are not always noticed until a plant collapses for no apparent reason. Vine weevils are

difficult to control; remove the beetles quickly, they tend to appear at night, hiding skilfully most of the time on the undersides of leaves (nibbling away at leaf edges). Check carefully around plant roots for any signs of larvae in the soil (remove immediately).

Dual crossword NEW GARDEN WASTE CHARGE IS A STEALTH TAX ON WEALTH - AND AT ODD WITH LABOUR PRINCIPLES

A NEW charge for garden waste disposal doesn’t just affect homeowners, but they are right to slam it as a stealth tax on wealth.

By claiming it is only fair that people who use the service pay for it, the Labour-run council is cutting back on its core responsibilities and creating a two-tier public service.

Coming from a party that is currently debating new policy ideas including the four-day week, the move seems incredibly regressive and at odds with both Labour’s traditional principles and its increasing commitment to environmental causes.

The cause, as usual, is austerity, and the constant cuts by the Tory government to local authorities across the borough that leave councils, no matter what their political persuasion, forced to turn to alternative means of generating cash and making savings.

Perhaps, given a decade of cuts, it’s not so much surprising that charges such as this have been put in place, but rather that they’ve managed to stave it off until now.

THE COUNTRY MAY BE DIVIDED OVER BREXIT BUT THE ELECTION TURNOUT DOUBLED IN SOUTHWARK IN SOUTHWARK we are used to seeing voter turnout not much higher than 20 per cent for EU elections, or indeed any election.

2016’s EU referendum may have divided our country, broken the Tories, and left Labour floundering, but if there is one positive, it’s seeing turnout doubling, as more than 40 per cent of residents had their say last week.

Whether you’re a Remainer or voted Leave, last week’s vote was a chance, two years after the referendum, to send a message to government and parliament about the current state of affairs as we move inexorably toward the October 31 deadline.

When turnout is high, there can be upsets and surprises. Southwark may be a Labour stronghold, but as the Liberal Democrats have shown this week, it is far from a one-party borough – and voters will swing if they feel sidelined by the bigger parties.

The Lib Dems have much to celebrate, but claims their vote represents London have been slammed by those who did vote Leave and have supported the Brexit Party.

They may be in a minority, but it’s a sizeable one; more than 9,000 people voted for Farage’s party in Southwark.

There are now two Brexit Party MEPs representing London in the European Parliament, for however long.

Leavers now have more of a voice in Europe than they’ve ever had in their home borough.

Rotherhithe man’s best friend

IN THIS week’s issue, we report how Rotherhithe’s London Bubble theatre has unveiled its latest iteration of the Rotherhithe Man, a papier-mache model which serves as an unofficial mascot.

The Rotherhithe Man is not the most unusual member of the team – listed as among the team on the company’s website are dog May, the company’s ‘Canine Advisor’.

Most bizarrely, May also has an email address for all correspondence with other theatre-loving canines: may@londonbubble.org.uk.

DESPITE A claw-fully disappointing result at the European elections, Southwark Labour at least has one grateful constituent – a distressed kitten rescued by quick-thinking South Bermondsey Cllr Leo Pollak while canvassing.

“The lengths politicians will go to get a vote!” jokes the opposition Liberal Demo-cat councillor, David Noakes.

Rory’s super-fan

IN THE contest for Conservative Party leader – and therefore Prime Minister – Rory Stewart MP has taken to inviting people to come and debate him in Borough Market.

Some Southwark locals and tourists at least took up the potential future PM’s invitation, with varying degrees of enthusiasm.

One, named only as Alistair however, was more enthusiastic than most: he rushed to the market to try to meet the politician, clad in a tshirt saying ‘Rory Stewart for Prime Minister’ hastily written in permanent marker.

He eventually tracked down the politician to Barking, East London.

While warmly received by the MP, others were less kind. “Oh he’s barking, alright,” commented one on the picture.

THE SEARCH is on to trace a Good Samaritan who saved a man's life after he collapsed from meningitis outside Elephant and Castle station.

Twenty-four-year-old Nick Gilbert fell ill outside the busy tube station while on a first date last July.

He had been feeling unwell in the days beforehand, but had put down his aches, pains, and an upset stomach to enjoying the World Cup a bit too much.

While keeling over vomiting with a crippling headache outside the station, he was ignored by passers-by who all assumed he was drunk - except for one

woman who stopped after realising something was seriously wrong.

Although his memory of the encounter is hazy, he says she was blonde, may have been called Ellen, and was from Norway.

Nick, who lives in Brixton, says the kindhearted woman phoned 999 and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived, making sure he didn't lose consciousness.

In hospital, doctors diagnosed him with meningococcal meningitis - a potentially fatal illness - and he was put on intravenous antibiotics.

He describes the illness and his recovery as 'some of the hardest months of my life, where my body and mind were no longer functioning in a way that I was used to' with recurring migraines, problems

concentrating, and fatigue.

Nick is now back to full strength and is even running the London Vitality 10k to raise funds for charity Meningitis Now, raising more than £1,000 so far.

But a year later he has still been unable to thank the mystery Good Samaritan.

“I would love to meet her and say a proper thank you," he said.

"She was the only one who stopped that night and she really might have saved my life.”

THE IMAGE of a man from Peckham, jailed for nearly twenty-four years after smuggling firearms into the UK through the Channel Tunnel, was released this week alongside two of his accomplices after they were also sentenced.

Emmanuel Okubote, aged 27, from Evan Cook Close in Peckham, was found guilty of conspiracy to supply firearms with intent to endanger life, conspiracy to supply class A drugs, and possession ammunition with intent to endanger life in November last year.

He was handed 23-and-a-half-years in prison on November 9, 2018 after a Trident and Border Force investigation found and seized two guns, ammunition, and 990 grams of high purity cocaine from a car in Coquelles, France, heading to Folkestone, on August 12, 2017.

Two men, Michael Mgbedike (22, from Spur Road in Orpington) and Kennedy Udo (aged 28, from Avery Hill Road in Eltham) were arrested at the scene.

The court heard that Okubote and a woman were arrested in the early hours the following day and charged in January 2018, when a loaded gun was found in a bag inside a vehicle in north London.

Okubote’s fingerprint was found on the bag, the court was told.

Detectives said the three men had made several trips to Amsterdam through the Channel Tunnel in July and August 2017, illegally to import drugs and guns.

On Friday, May 17, at Woolwich Crown Court, Udo was sentenced to eight years and six months for drug and firearms offences.

According to the Met, Okubote was established to be ‘the main orchestrator in the conspiracy, using others with little or no previous criminal history to work for him’.

“This demonstrates that law enforcement agencies will relentlessly pursue those who carry, and those who

facilitate the movement of firearms and drugs into and within the UK. “The Metropolitan Police Service, as well as other law enforcement agencies, are committed to making the UK a hostile environment for these criminals to operate.”

FOSTER CARERS in Southwark have shared their experiences as part of a campaign celebrating those who offer a home to young people who can’t live with their families.

Foster Care Fortnight is an annual campaign to show how offering children a home can transform lives and encourage new people to think about becoming foster carers.

Since 1972, Dave has been caring for children, currently for a teenage girl with learning difficulties.

He said: “The best thing about fostering is seeing a child grow in confidence and leave care full of selfesteem and making a go of life.

“To anyone thinking of fostering, I say go for it. Your life will be enriched and you will be helping someone who really needs it.

“Yes, it’s hard at first but you get oodles of training and lots of support.”

Dave considered giving up after his wife passed away in 2012 but the children living with him were adamant about staying with him.

“I’m glad I have been able to finish what my wife and I started,” he said.

The Foster Care Network, who run the campaign, say that carers usually specialise in caring for a particular age group.

Newer recruits Debbie and Paul have fostered since 2015 and are currently caring for a teenager.

“I wanted to become a foster carer and especially a foster carer for Southwark Council because it’s where I live and I think it is important Southwark people foster Southwark children," Debbie explained.

“We found ourselves in a situation where our youngest went away to

university and we were rattling around a three bedroom flat and it’s a joy to have youngsters coming into the home.

"It’s something that we both wish we had done sooner.

Debbie said: “I think there can be a lot of sensationalised stories about caring for older children.

"With teenagers you still have to be there and parent but they also like to have their own time.

“He’s part of our family and other foster children that we’ve had look up to him for advice.

"You only ever hear about the ‘impossible teenagers’ and that’s not the case for everyone.

“You don’t hear about the good things!”

The length of stay for foster children can vary from very short-term to the duration of their childhood.

Stella has cared for over sixty children and this Christmas twenty of them returned to visit her with their partners and children.

“I always say, fostering is not just a young person or a child coming into your home and you providing a roof and a safe environment: it’s about love,” she said.

“If you woke me up in the middle of the night and asked me about the children I’ve cared for, over sixty children, I can tell you each ones date of birth and why they came to me.

“I can tell you that, but ask me what I had for breakfast and I can’t remember!”

Southwark Council cabinet member for children, schools and adult care Jasmine Ali, who is an adoptive mum herself, encouraged anyone with room in their heart and space in their home for a child to get in touch.

She said: “I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all of our fantastic Southwark foster carers who open their homes to children when they need it the most.

"As a proud adoptive mum I know from personal experience the crucial role that foster carers play in the lives of the children in our care.

"The impact that foster carers can have on a young person just cannot be underestimated, providing a safe and loving home for a child who is going through a really difficult time can have a profound effect on a young person for the rest of their lives.

“Fostering is of course not without its challenges but many carers describe it as

STASH WORTH £20K FOUND AT ADDRESS

POLICE HUNT AFTER TEEN IS ‘SLASHED’ ON ESTATE

Officers were called to the Millpond Estate, close to Bermondsey Wall East, at around 13.20pm on May 19 to reports of a man armed with knives.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a nineteen-year-old suffering from a slash injury on his arm.

An ambulance crew was also dispatched to treat the injured nineteen-year-old, confirmed a London Ambulance spokesman.

The teenager was rushed to hospital where his injuries were deemed “nonlife-threatening or life-changing.”

Armed officers, the Met’s Police Dog unit and a police helicopter launched a hunt for the suspect but he was not found.

Efforts to track him down are still ongoing, the Met told the News in its latest update about the case last week.

No arrests have been made and police investigations continue.

The incident in question took place last Tuesday, May 21, when three men were arrested after a vehicle stop at Camberwell Station Road at around 8.45pm.

All three, who were in their late teens,

Two were later charged and the third was released under investigation. The Met was emphatic in saying no injuries were reported and no shots were fired.

THE MET have launched an investigation to track down a suspect after a nineteen-year-old was ‘slashed’ on a Bermondsey estate earlier this month.

A HUGE stash of cannabis worth twenty grand was nabbed by police at an address in Camberwell earlier this month.

Two men have now been arrested for supply of cannabis and fraud after the search warrant by safer neighbourhood team officers on Monday, May 13.

RUMOURS OF a police shoot out in Camberwell last week fuelled by viral videos on social media have been denied by Southwark’s Met.

Three videos seen by the News and shared widely across platforms such as Facebook and Whatsapp showed police cars and a crowd gathering near the junction of Denmark Hill and Camberwell Church Street.

In an audio commentary, a man who said he had just disembarked from the

35 bus, claimed police had shot a suspect after being fired on from the vehicle.

Another appeared to show a fight and an injured man lying on the ground, but neither could be vertified – and their time, date and location were unclear.

The images led to a flurry of speculation online and numerous calls to

CHERRY GARDEN Primary School celebrated the official opening of its new home in Peckham last week.

Harriet Harman and newly appointed Mayor of Southwark, Sandra Rhule, were at the ceremony alongside parents, teachers and Southwark councillors.

The school is a new, purpose-built special school for up to 85 children with profound and multiple learning difficulties on a larger site than its previous base in Bermondsey. Facilities include a trampoline room, hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, and soft play.

Southwark councillor Jasmine Ali, the cabinet member responsible for children, schools, and adult care, described the new building and its facilities as ‘absolutely breathtaking’.

Head teacher Teresa Neary said the children were already responding well to their new environment. “I was always keen to ensure that the school spaces allowed for the best possible opportunities for great learning to take place and alongside that the teachers had the best opportunities for great teaching,” she explained.

“I also wanted a beautiful environment for both children and staff and the architects shared the same vision in terms of design. It is an incredible building and I still sometimes pinch myself that it’s our building.”

Malcolm (pictured), who was also 17, was fatally attacked following a confrontation with two males, who wanted to fight the group he was standing with after college.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of murder and of possession of an offensive weapon after a trial at the Old Bailey. He will be sentenced on July 5.

Another man, Treynae Campbell, 19, of Sydenham, was acquitted of murder and manslaughter, but pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon.

The court heard how police were called to the stabbing outside the tube station on Friday, November 2, shortly after half-four in the afternoon.

The emergency services found Malcolm suffering from a stab wound.

He was rushed to hospital, but tragically died a short time afterward.

A post-mortem gave the cause of the talented teen’s death as multiple stab wounds. The court heard how he had been stabbed three times – including once in the heart.

During their investigations, police tracked down a hunting knife used in the murder to the 17-year-old who was convicted.

Bermondsey stabbing is false alarm say police

A REPORTED stabbing on Saturday at Bermondsey’s Blue was a false alarm, police have said.

Officers were called to reports of a man stabbed at 18.25pm on Saturday at Southwark Park Road.

However, when police and ambulance arrived, they found that a male aged in his twenties had not been stabbed.

Police said the man “voluntarily went to hospital for an unrelated matter.”

No offences were disclosed.

Reported sightings of London’s Air ambulance were not confirmed by the service, which said it had no log of attending the incident.

However, it is possible that the service may have been flying overhead at the time to refuel at Battersea Heliport, or that it was called and cancelled before arriving on the scene.

eighteen Chinese students visit the school in February.

before steaming.

He was Shakespeare’s first leading man, the original Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth, and a celebrated thespian, the ‘finest tragedian’, and one of the men to create the world-famous Globe Theatre. But Richard Burbage, the greatest actor of Shakespeare’s age, has long since faded from prominence.

Now, residents on the eponymous Burbage Road are hoping to change that, with a new project – Exit: Burbage – commemorating the 400th anniversary of his death and the extraordinary life he led.

Originally a touring actor, his father James settled in London and opened The Theatre in Shoreditch when Richard was eight years old.

Based just beyond the City of London’s northern wall, The Theatre is believed to be the first permanent theatre built in the capital since Roman times, which achieved great success.

James brought up Richard, and his other son Cuthbert, into the family trade and by his early 20s, Richard was already a superstar, after treading the boards throughout his teens.

As shareholders, the family created a new system of theatre ownership whereby the company of actors owned a share in the theatre and its production, the foundation of the industry we know today.

By the 1590s two leading companies had emerged in London’s theatrical world as rivals.

They were The Chamberlain’s Men, later known as the King’s Men, led by James Burbage and his sons at the Theatre, and the Admiral’s men, led by Edward Alleyn and Philip Henslowe at Bankside’s The Rose.

In his long career – which only ended with his death at the age of 52 - Burbage performed as Romeo, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Henry III, Pericles and Shylock, and appeared in a host of Jacobean plays including Sejanus, Knight of Malta and Mad Lover.

Shakespeare is believed to have written his characters with Burbage, a great friend, in mind.

One of Burbage’s most popular turns was as arch-villain Richard III, widely credited with sparking a fashion for the way he strutted with one hand upon his dagger.

One story, written in the diary of John Manningham, a contemporary of both, has it that one female audience member was so enamoured with Burbage’s performance as Richard III she requested him to pay her a night time visit.

Shakespeare, overhearing the proposition, seized the opportunity for himself but was interrupted by a disgruntled Burbage.

After being told Richard III was at the door, Shakespeare is said to have replied that William the Conqueror was before Richard III. But for all their success, The King’s Men also had plenty of misfortune.

themselves – and the future of Shoreditch’s The Theatre – in real difficulty.

The Theatre’s lease was due for expiry in April 1597, but the landlord, Giles Allen, was refusing to renew.

The company gained permission for a

new structure in Blackfriars, but this was overturned due to complaints by wealthy residents worried about the clientele’s raucous behaviour, leaving the Burbage family out of pocket with a theatre they couldn’t use.

A year later Richard’s father James had

died and The Theatre’s future was still in jeopardy after Allen claimed it had reverted to his ownership after the lease was up.

It was left to the young Richard, and his brother Cuthbert, to solve their quandary.

At the end of 1598, they found a novel

solution. The company enlisted help and dismantled the entire structure in Shoreditch, while Allen was away celebrating Christmas, painstakingly carrying it across the Thames.

They rebuilt the theatre on a new site in Southwark’s Southbank. With space for up to 3,000, the new venue became the state-of-the-art The Globe.

Richard and Cuthbert remained majority shareholders of the King’s Men, with other members of the company pitching in, including William Shakespeare, who gained a stake.

Burbage and Shakespeare were colleagues but also great friends. It is said that Shakespeare wrote his parts with Burbage in mind, and that Burbage was the star quality to help draw in the crowds.

The Globe survived outbreaks of plaque, and a fire in 1613 when it was razed after a theatrical canon misfired into the thatch.

It was rebuilt the following year but eventually torn down not long after being closed by the puritans in the 1640s.

Burbage married Winifred Turner at some point in the 1590s and together the couple had eight children, with all but one dying in infancy.

The only child to survive, William, was born in 1616 and named after Shakespeare, but little is known of what became of him.

Burbage died on March 9, 1619, at 52 amid a huge outpouring of grief from the public.

Although London’s theatres recovered in the Restoration era, it wasn’t until 1997 that the Globe stood once again in Southwark.

Although renamed ‘Shakespeare’s Globe’, the theatre owes as much to Burbage as it does to the Bard. But while Shakespeare’s name is world-famous, Burbage has slipped into obscurity.

Burbage Road was built in the 1880s as London began to expand into the hitherto country villages.

Why this particular spot was chosen to honour Burbage is unknown, but it is likely a wry nod to his rivalry with fellow thespian Edward Alleyn, the founder of nearby Dulwich College and Alleyn’s School.

Today’s residents, including Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen, were delighted with a new mural celebrating Burbage on their street.

“As a local I’ve always cherished Dulwich’s association with some of the great actors of the past and there’s none finer than Richard Burbage,” he said.

Man of La Mancha Dream is impossibly dated

H

aving not been staged in London since 1968, the award-winning Man of La Mancha has made its long awaited return to the West End with the English National Opera. The reason for its absence, however, became clearer as the evening progressed with its lead number ‘The Impossible Dream’, becoming somewhat of a self fulfilling prophecy for the production itself, writes Rosie O'Connell.

Framed as a play within a play, Kelsey Grammer portrays the imprisoned author Miguel de Cervantes who, while awaiting his trial by the Spanish Inquisition, performs a play for his fellow inmates, utilising the props and people in his proximity. Cervantes here takes the role of the deluded Alonso Quijano who believes he is the fictional knight errant, Don Quixote. Mistaking windmills for a

giant foe, a rundown inn for a castle and tavern wench and part-time prostitute Aldonza as his ideal Lady, Dulcinea, who he swears his eternal loyalty to, Quixote sets out to find adventures with his manservant Sancho Panza in tow.

Grammer works hard and for the most part keeps up with commanding vocals and a strong stage presence that balances the character’s foolish nobility, however, he doesn’t quite possess the powerhouse vocals anticipated for a place in this company. On the other hand, opera star Danielle de Niese captivates as Aldonza/Dulcinea, bringing an infectious energy and poignancy to the role, and along with with stellar vocals, acting and dancing, she is a true triple threat. The main cast is rounded out by Peter Polycarpou as Sancho Panza who makes the most of his intermittent, but amusing appearances, and Nicholas Lyndhurst who is as strong as the

formidable Governor as he is the intoxicated innkeeper.

The book itself comes across as rather dated, so attempts at modernising it end up clunky or simply confusing. Simply having prisoners in hoodies and guards in dark sunglasses is not enough to make a production relevant, and add to that the references to the Spanish Inquisition, it at best feels underexplored and at worst left me wondering where and when we were supposed to be? Nevertheless, my biggest issue was the handling of a scene a little later in the production where Aldonza/Dulcinea is subject to a drawn-out and uncomfortable attack and sexual assault at the hands of a group of muleteers. There seemed to be no purpose served for this scene to be depicted in such a gratuitous, violent manner. A great misstep in my opinion and quite inexcusable for a 2019 revival.

Anna censored in her home

against the odds; a reminder to be your best self. The overall message seems a little lost throughout, and despite the powerful, final reprise of The Impossible Dream, evoking hope and promise of a better future, it seems a little too late, a little too dated and a little too impossible.

PREPARE FOR the unexpected with, Anna, a play created by Ella Hickson, with sound engineers Ben and Max Ringham, that introduces audience members to an innovative and exciting, viewing and listening experience, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Supplied with a headset, and facing a huge glass screen creating a window into a plush apartment in East Berlin, 1968, and audiences will find themselves both separated from actors, the stage and each other. A dinner party provides the central theme for a gathering during a period of great historical social unrest, when trust was constantly under the spotlight. Donning earphones, you realise the glass divide casts the audience into a voyeuristic role, sitting outside, listening in and soaking up events as they unfold, though, happily, without the consequences of arrest.

Splitting the senses allows the audience access to either all or individual cast members moving around the apartment, playing out their respective roles. Characters’ voices are the muffled chatter of the dinner party guest, focusing instead on the play’s protagonist, Anna, played by Phoebe Fox. Fleeing her living room, we panic for her wellbeing as she becomes invisible

to the audience gaze, only to resume contact as her every breath is magnified via the earphones, making the connection between audience and actors intriguing. Should we be there, do they know we are watching them, we wonder, especially when Anna walks towards her apartment window and looks out onto the Berlin vista - we are as invisible as air.

Without giving too much away, due to a request for no spoilers, Anna, raises questions about censorship, society and gender roles. Characters are reminded that their well-paid jobs and fancy homes are down to the state, recalling this period when people died for their beliefs. Afraid and unwilling to rock the boat, we witness characters play the part of people, toeing the line. Tension is provided via Anna and her Socialist views clashing vehemently with the Capitalist straitjacket thrust upon her.

With the lockdown of the mind and mouth, which invariably leads to whispering, we are privy to the murmurs - will it inspire action?

Different, and worth experiencing.

The Adoration and the passion of Ed Those times spent capturing the heart and soul of the city he loves has led to his Silicon Roundabout Old Street Station being selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition an open exhibition that has been going for more than 250 years.

Ed Gray became interested in art through the Tintin books: ‘Hergé drew him so beautifully that I was hooked.’ At art school his love of figurative painters such as Piero Della Francesca, Giotto, Fra Angelico and William Hogarth was frowned upon: ‘I asked for ac-cess to a life model but it proved problematic so I went out with a sketchbook to find my subjects in the street. This was probably a good

relate to.

For his Old Street piece he says, ‘I was trying to capture the energy and buzz of people that I sketched there over two days… Like many parts of London you get a real sense in Old Street of a new London being built on the bones of an older city.’

While there sketching he heard the life story of a blind, elderly Irish man who sat down next to him: ‘For the next two hours he told me the story of his life: emigration from Ire-land, leaving his home and family and making a new life in this city. It was the familiar tale of the London Irish community, but then he pulled out a bundle of 65 year old letters from his late mother back in Ireland and his eyes filled with tears as he squinted at the words he could no longer read and the voice he could no longer hear.’

Of course, that Irish man is in the painting along with the passion of Ed Gray that put him there.

PEOPLE DON’T see Rotherhithe artist Ed Gray watching them go about their London lives but he is there, always there, watching and sketching in markets, and stations, pubs and clubs, stadiums and streets, he is there.

For years he has been there in all weathers, sitting or standing unnoticed, inconspicuous, quickly, anxiously getting someone’s look or walk pencilled in to his sketch book as London rushes by, writes Michael Holland...

lesson for me as I've based my career on this way of working.’

These days his figurative influences are Dale Lewis and Jock McFadyen, but says that his work is connected to all of those tat he has admired and who have made him the artist he is today. He talks about the art of

others with generosity and passion: ‘Jock’s work has a great sense of humanity… Hogarth is a master of narrative…’

Gray’s artworks often have ‘The Adoration of…’ in the title, referencing the biblical paintings of old, but his ‘Adorations’ depict the

adoration found in contemporary life: football, money, music.

The theme for this year’s Royal Academy exhibition is around art that describes the world we live in, which is very apt for Ed Gray because he does just that. He paints a London that everyone can recognise and

erfetta is Italian for Perfect and also the name of the pizzeria in Albion Street. Perfetta Pizzeria is a bold statement to make, but enough to get me and Fiona down to Rotherhithe to check it out.

On entering we were both immediately impressed by the impressive wood-fired pizza oven, a huge affair that attracts the eye for all to see and admire. The oven was open when we arrived so could see the flames licking up just before a freshly made pizza was slid inside and the door closed, sealing in the heat and the roar of the flames.

Now we could hear the sound of music emanating from a TV in the corner.

We sat down and very soon our smiling host brought menus and olives for the table and a salad of mixed leaves, onion, tomato and cucumber. We ordered sparkling water as Perfetta Pizzeria is a BYO establishment and we could see a couple enjoying a bottle of white wine that they had brought on another table.

Our starters consisted of Parmigiana for Fiona, a dish of roasted aubergines, tomato sauce and stringy parmesan cheese that did not want to let go when she tried to fork a mouthful out. It was very big for a starter, the size of half a brick and could have easily been a main course.

I had Alette di Pollo, marinated chicken wings coated in a BBQ sauce with a chilli kick. Again, there were enough to constitute a main course.

While Fiona brought me up to speed on her week of fighting people’s corners and fending off trouble in her pastoral role at a university, I watched the human traffic of SE16 pass by. I could not help noticing how many were coming in to collect pizza, or how busy the moped delivery boy was.

Perfetta was evidently more of a collect and deliver place than sitdown restaurant.

And then it was our turn and we could see why pizza was the main attraction. My dining companion’s Siciliana was a riot of vegetarian colour, the thin base hidden beneath mozzarella, tomato sauce, sun dried tomato, roasted aubergine, roasted courgette and olives, and it made my Il Padrino look rather bland in

comparison, although the spice in the pepperoni ensured there was no blandness in taste for my pizza.

Even though there didn’t seem to be many people coming in to partake of the warm welcome at Perfetta Pizzeria, the Rotherhithe locals were definitely aware of and enjoying - its Italian-based fare in the comfort of their own homes.

And because the first course had filled us up, we took half of our pizzas home to enjoy the same way.

AFTER THE curtain was drawn on his tenth season at the helm of Dulwich Hamlet, Gavin Rose is enjoying a well-earned break. The south Londoner has been the catalyst for Dulwich’s rise up the English football pyramid. He reflected on the latest chapter of his Dulwich career, and his ambitions for the future.

I asked Rose about for his perspective on Dulwich’s 2018-19 season.

“We earned survival in our first season so it was definitely a success,” he said. “I think our finishing position was an accurate reflection of us as a group, which is no disgrace given it was our first year and given the problems we had to contend with off the pitch.”

Rose shed light on the difficulties posed by Dulwich’s eviction from Champion Hill in the spring of 2018. He explained that, aside from the obvious financial problems it caused, moving to Tooting also forced numerous players from Dulwich’s promotion season to leave the club because of Tooting’s inaccessibility.

Looking at things from a monetary perspective, Rose shuddered as he recounted the uncertainty over whether the club would be able to make payments, including to players and staff.

He compared it to the uneasy feeling of having to constantly look over one’s shoulder.

In contrast, he insisted that next season the club will be following a more positive trajectory. However, fans should not expect Billericay Town-esque spending sprees anytime soon.

“Our budget wasn’t a disgrace last year. It was an average budget for the league. So, if we do improve it that’ll only be by a bit. We’re not trying to be the big spenders of the league. We’re trying to be self-sustainable and prudent because we want to build something that can continue over the years, rather than a one-year ‘flash in the pan’.”

“We think the way to do that is to be competitive but not stupid when it comes to spending money”.

Hamlet fans have rarely doubted Rose throughout his long tenure as boss.

However, the club’s off-field management has in the past been an area of concern. Bearing this in mind, Dulwich fans will be pleased to hear Rose’s endorsement of his boardroom, which was delivered with fierce conviction.

He continued: “Last season I turned down three offers from clubs in the

[National League] and that was down to, one, the loyalty that we had to the club due to the number of years that we’ve spent here; two, the precarious situation that the club was in off the pitch meant that we wanted to provide stability; and three, because the guys on the board are Dulwich Hamlet supporters first and foremost.

“I believe they have the acumen to build a good structure off the pitch.

They’ve shown me that. They have a vision to grow the club over the years to come.

“Their approach is very practical. It makes a lot of sense. They’re not trying to be big shots – we’ve seen a lot of those ships…they usually sink after maybe a year of success.

“Dulwich’s future is going to be built on solid ground. I believe that these guys are going to continue to grow the club off the pitch and I know that they will continue to give me the support to grow the club on the pitch as well.

“I am ambitious and if I felt that the club didn’t want to continue to grow then I’d probably look elsewhere.”

The most immediate job that the board had was organising Dulwich’s preseason fixtures. One fixture that has caught supporters’ eyes is a visit to Merseyside to play Marine AFC, to celebrate the Liverpudlian side’s 125th anniversary.

The club currently plays in the Northern Premier League and has an intriguing history. They notably appeared in the 1932 FAAmateur Cup Final when they were beaten 7-1 by Dulwich Hamlet in front of 22,000 at Upton Park.

ANOTHER POOR batting performance saw Dulwich dismissed for 158, to go down to a ten-wicket defeat in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 2 match at Oxted & Limpsfield last weekend.

Dulwich elected to bat, and skipper Ed Stolle and Alex Leyshon seemed in little trouble while adding 46 in 11.1 overs for the first wicket. Leyshon’s dismissal for 16 was followed three overs later by

The club is also notable for having the longest serving manager in post-war English football. Roly Howard led the side in a remarkable 1,975 matches from 1972 until 2005.

At the more glamorous end of the spectrum, Dulwich will play a match against Crystal Palace and one other Premier League team, though the second side is yet to be confirmed. Rose was eager to acknowledge the good work done by top-division clubs in agreeing to play Hamlet.

“Over the years Crystal Palace has been a great support to our club. We’ve had many pre-season games with them.

They’ve bought a few players from us and given them the opportunity to progress their careers.

“Last season in particular Mr Parish (Crystal Palace chairman, Steve) was really great when Palace gave us a friendly during the season.

“Mr Hodgson (Palace boss, Roy) brought a really strong team down. To me that’s real support. They didn’t have to do that. They risked injuries during a Premiership season.

“They’ve been excellent and they deserve a lot of credit.

“A lot of people are aware that Dulwich Hamlet is a club that helps others where it can. I think it means that people are willing to help us when we need it. It’s great that Palace are coming down. We’ll get a big attendance and our players will get the chance to pit their wits against them again.”

Looking past the summer, Rose shared his ambitions for next season.

Under the former Hamlet midfielder’s guidance, Dulwich have climbed two divisions. Who would bet against them reaching the play-offs next season? After a year during which even the most optimistic Hamlet fans must have felt decidedly blue, the future both on and off the pitch looks increasingly rosy.

BUOYED BY recent success in several competition, Tokei Judo Club sent six of their best competitors to the recent London Open.

Neno Avelov, the senior coach, also attended to provide mat-side guidance and share his experience as both a former Bulgarian international and Bulgarian national coach.

This was a ranking event so a ‘must attend’ for anyone wanting to get into the national team. But there was also a veterans competition (over 30) to guarantee an even bigger turnout.

At the end of the day, there were five medals for the Tokei team with Svetlana Purosova taking two. Sveta won gold in the veterans U57kg and bronze in U57kg group moving her up the ranking table and getting her ever closer to a place in the national squad.

Tola Bishi also won a bronze in the U90kg veterans despite carrying an injury. In the U81kg veterans Tokei actually had two competitors on the podium simultaneously. This was a first for the club. Peter Yeo won a bronze and Jonathan Corcoran came away with a silver medal.

Tokei Judo club train in a purpose-built dojo in Tooley Street on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays with Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ) training on Thursdays and Saturdays. They are a club with a significant proportion of more mature players returning to the sport. New players are always very welcome.

Murtagh, who had previously taken two wickets for 20 runs off his ten overs, gave him valuable support by making 43 not out. Dulwich have taken just one wicket in the last two matches, and can once again rue their failure to take the few chances that came their way.

Dulwich take just one point from this match and slip two places to ninth. They will be looking to perform much better this weekend when they have a difficult home game against leaders Dorking.

Archer axed by new Scotland boss Clarke

JORDAN ARCHER has missed out on Steve Clarke’s first Scotland squad after losing his Millwall place last season.

Clarke, who was appointed this month after the sacking of Alex McLeish, named five uncapped players in his squad for June Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Belgium.

Despite naming four goalkeepers, there is no room for Archer, who has paid the price after a difficult season with the Lions.

Clarke named Livingston stopper Liam Kelly in his 27-man group, along with Scott Bain (Celtic), David Marshall (Hull City) and Jon McLaughlin (Sunderland).

Archer is searching for a new club to join when he officially leaves Millwall on July 1.

Archer is just the latest Millwall player to miss out on an international squad after the Lions narrowly avoided relegation.

MILLWALL ARE sticking to the familiar this summer after announcing a number of pre-season fixtures this week.

Millwall will play National League South side Concord Rangers at Thames Road on Saturday, July 6.

Neil Harris and his Lions squad and backroom team will travel to Portugal for the fifth summer in a row under the Millwall boss. They go to Vilamoura in the Algarve on Friday, July 12 for a sixday training camp that is set to include two behind-closed-doors friendlies. One of them will be against English opponents and the other against a Portuguese side.

Three days after their return they make the short trip to Kent to play the Gillingham.

Millwall last played Southend in 201617, when they lost to them at Roots Hall and beat them at The Den before pipping Phil Brown’s side to sixth place by a point.

The contest against Gillingham is set to have an added edge. Former Rotherham boss Steve Evans was appointed this summer after he was sacked by Peterborough last January.

Evans became involved in a verbal spat with Lee Gregory towards the end of the 2014-15 season, when the Millwall striker said he hoped Rotherham would lose against Reading and then “bottle it” in their last game against Leeds.

The Millers defeated Reading to secure their Championship place and send Millwall down. After their victory over the Royals, Evans boasted: “A Millwall player said we've not got bottle. I've got twelve bottles of pink finest Champagne and we'll be drinking them for about a week.”

He added: “Look forward to League One, son, and keep your trap shut.”

There are friendlier links between Millwall and Southend. Harris is a Shrimpers fan and ended his playing career at Roots Hall.

Midfielder Ryan Leonard and coach Adam Barrett are also ex-Southend players, while current Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh joined from a similar role at the League One club.

Millwall will announce further friendlies ahead of 2019-20, including a home game at The Den the weekend before the start of the Championship on August 2.

Millwall start pre-season training on June 25.

“Ideally to be at home the week before you start is the key one,” Harris said.

“We tried to mix it a little bit this year, different venues, trying to build relationships with clubs. Clubs that can help us as much as we can help them, going there pre-season.”

BOURNEMOUTH ARE an example of what Millwall could achieve, according to manager Neil Harris, who said he feels “rejuvenated” ahead of a busy summer of rebuilding.

Harris admitted “getting stuff off my chest” has “reinvigorated” him as he contemplates restructuring his squad to try to improve on a 21st-place finish last season.

After the Lions’ last home game of 2018-19 against Bristol City, Harris gave a hard-hitting interview when he revealed he felt he had been let down by some members of the squad.

Harris promised a summer of change, and highlighted the support he is getting from chairman John Berylson and the board.

He also praised Lions supporters.

“The fan base have been great since I opened up about the inside troubles and

the financial area that we’re competing in. I think people have realised we’ve expanded our playing group and added quality players, but we’re still a million miles away from the majority of the Championship,” Harris said.

“The chairman of this football club is phenomenally supportive, not just of me but any manager that has gone before me. Trying to defend the ground so that fans have a football stadium to turn up to and watch their team, and also supporting the manager when they’re trying to build a squad. It’s important to us that we try to bridge the gaps.

“Again, profit and sustainability rules dictate what clubs can do. We’re not the biggest of clubs with revenue coming in to enable us to spend the money, but we can work within those budgets and we can keep improving.

“The chairman wants to improve.

We’ve had some really good conversations where we understand that to compete at this level has changed in the last four, five years. We’re not going

Will we get there one day? Hopefully, as we keep progressing.”

The Cherries finished 21st in League Two in 2008-09, after appointing 31year-old Eddie Howe who saved them from dropping out of the Football League. Six years later they won the Championship and have been in the Premier League since 2015.

Harris continued: “Look at someone like Bournemouth, for example, where they’ve come from. There’s always hope you can keep developing the club, but to move forward this summer then we’ve got to come away from thinking of being a bottom-two budget like the

last two years to try and compete.

“We’re not talking about competing with Forest and Middlesbrough and Leeds United, it’s not going to happen.

But if we can keep moving forward that’s us in the right direction.

“It’s a really exciting summer for me to be a Millwall manager, [and] to be a fan. A lot of players leaving, a lot of fresh faces coming in. That always brings anticipation. Expectation?

Possibly. But I think we had that last summer and fell flat a little bit during the season.

“I’m promising we’ll be better, so we will be better. I’ve always said let’s be patient with the club, the recruitment guys and the board trying to bring

players in. But let’s also be excited by a lot of quality players we’ve still got in the group, some really good young players we’ve got getting better all the time.

“Some players came from nowhere, really, to perform really well last season.

We just want to add to them.

“I’m rejuvenated in the sense that it was a really tough second half of the season for all of us, staff and players and the fans. I was delighted when I got some stuff off my chest a little bit, but then it’s reinvigorated me to think about who we can bring in next season. The support I’m getting from the board and how we want to be better, I can see the club moving forward next season.”

RYAN TUNNICLIFFE’S Millwall career might not be over yet, manager Neil Harris has hinted.

Tunnicliffe, 26, was one of the players the Lions announced would be released this summer, with the midfielder’s contract expiring at the end of June.

Harris wants to add a central midfielder to the squad this summer, but is wary of overloading that area.

The Lions boss played 4-3-3 at times last season, after being almost exclusively wedded to a 4-4-2 system the previous three campaigns.

Tunnicliffe, Ryan Leonard and Ben Thompson were the preferred firstchoice midfield trio from February, before the latter’s injury.

Harris praised former Manchester United midfielder Tunnicliffe’s contribution as the Lions beat the drop.

He was one of five senior players not retained, along with Jordan Archer, Tom King, Conor McLaughlin and Sid Nelson.

“It doesn’t mean you can’t revisit those players in the summer or in the future.

Just at the moment, where we are, you need honesty with the players, tell them where they’re at,” Harris said.

“Obviously some tough decisions to let some players go.

“Tunni is the obvious one that would have got people thinking, ‘is that the right decision, is it not?’ I can only make judgement not just on what I’ve seen over the last six or seven weeks, but what I’ve seen over the last two years.

“Sometimes it’s just about budgets, Financial Fair Play (FFP), creating space within the group. I’ve been very honest in saying I want to bring another central midfield player into the group.

“We have Shaun [Williams], Ryan and Ben that have great attributes in different aspects. Then you want another player and you can’t have too many players in the same position.

You want competition for places, yes of course you do, but if you play 4-4-

2 in games you don’t want three central midfield players sitting on the bench or not in the squad. It makes it very tough.

“If you’re playing 4-3-3 then you need competition. So getting the right mix of players is key.

“Ryan finished the season really strongly, I had really good conversations with him explaining where we are at the moment. Ryan is going to look what’s available to him as a free agent and we’re going to do the same. If we talk again in four weeks’ time then we talk again in four weeks’ time.

“He’s done great for me, he’s a really good lad, so I certainly wish him all the best.”

Apart from players whose deals are expiring this summer, some under contract will also leave. Tom Elliott and Fred Onyedinma are likely to be two of those, while there is also doubt over Aiden O’Brien’s Millwall future.

Harris added: “There are players that are contracted to us that might need a change of scenery, that I might have told to find pastures new.

“Again, they have to be honest conversations. Players have to be able to knock on my door and say, ‘gaffer, look, this isn’t for me, I don’t want to play for you and I don’t want to play for the club’. Or, ‘I need to move the family down west or up north.’ Then I have to give an honest opinion.

“If I enable the players to do that, then I need to have honest conversations with them, to invite them into my office and say, ‘look son, you’re not for me anymore, you’re not for the football club. You need to move on, you need a different challenge.’

“And we have done that, I’ve done that with various players.

“But the door’s never shut at this football club while I’m in charge, the door’s never shut. Players can prove me wrong.

“But we have had those conversations, and that might become more evident once players start departing.”

SID NELSON is looking for a new club this summer – and his chances of getting one will be boosted as a Wembley play-off final winner.

Nelson, 23, played in the centre of defence for Tranmere against Newport last weekend and helped his side to a clean sheet as Connor Jennings headed home in the 119th minute to seal a second successive promotion for Micky Mellon’s team.

Former Lions captain Nelson, playing against one of his former loan clubs, produced a superb first-half challenge to

prevent Jamile Matt getting through on goal.

Newport were then furious when Matt appeared to be brought down in the box

by Emmanuel Monthe, but referee Ross Joyce didn’t think it was a penalty.

Tranmere were handed an advantage when Newport defender Mark O’Brien was sent off for a second booking in the 89th minute.

Nelson looked like he was struggling with an injury when he went off in the 115th minute, replaced with Adam Buxton.

The game was heading for penalties, before Jennings nodded past Joe Day in front of the 25,217 attendance.

Mellon praised Nelson and his teammates for their defensive display.

“I’ve been here for a long time and I have seen the qualities that we have for a long time,” Mellon said. “Footballing ability, togetherness and fight and to see ourselves through was terrific.

“Many of that team played in the Conference National last year and I’m absolutely delighted for them and there has been a lot of hard, hard work involved to get there.

“I expected it to go to penalties, if I’m honest, both sets of players deserve an amazing amount of credit, but I’m delighted to get over the line and we were made to work very hard for it.

“We have some catching up to do, we went through the leagues so there is still stuff to do. We’re a club that is recovering, but this group of players will fight for it on another level.

“Newport kept fighting, they kept up the pressure with their long throw-ins and set-pieces into the box. They were really big and made it really difficult for us.

“I’ve sat here and lost and it’s really hard, it’s tough to lose here so I’m just delighted to get the result.

“They all have fantastic ability and I’m proud of them all, some of them played in the National League last season and now they will be in League One next season.”

Nelson will be released this summer after five seasons as a professional with Millwall, including five loan spells.

MILLWALL HAVE bids in for a number of players and have met agents “to try to move things along”, boss Neil Harris has revealed.

Harris has highlighted a goalkeeper and striker as the main priority areas, and he also wants to add competition in midfield and in wide attacking positions in the “biggest rebuild” of his time in charge.

The Lions currently have nineteen players with senior league experience contracted beyond this summer, including youngsters George Alexander and Billy Mitchell.

But Tom Elliott and Fred Onyedinma are set to depart in this transfer window,

and Harris hasn’t ruled out other players leaving.

Millwall have offered goalkeeper David Martin a new deal, but he is thought to be close to joining West Ham, his father Alvin’s former club.

Lee Gregory is also leaving, but Harris certainly isn’t panicking.

“We’re not devoid of players, we’re not suddenly down to seven senior fit players. With Murray Wallace, Tom Bradshaw and Ben Thompson back fit for the start of pre-season, that’s a huge bonus for the group,” Harris told the club’s iFollow video platform.

“Yes, the goalkeeping department’s got to be looked at and that’s a priority for us. Centre-forward needs to be looked at, that’s a priority for us. We want to add more attacking output into the wide areas. We want to add to the midfield area and we’ll adjust

accordingly from there if people go out the door.

“We want to add to the group, and trying to add to it as quickly as possible is key, obviously. We want to try to get them in before the market starts to move.

“We have bid for players already and will continue to do so. I’ve met with various players and advisors to try to move things along.

“But you can imagine, where we are as a club, trying to compete with big clubs at this level is tough. You have to try to sell them the dream of coming to Millwall and sell to them that we are a close-knit group and once this place gets going it’s an unbelievable atmosphere.

“Attracting the right players is key, but attracting the right characters is vital.

I took over there were nineteen players left, the majority senior players. We had a big squad at the time so we still had a lot of players left over.

“We didn’t bring huge amounts in but we weren’t under pressure to build it overnight. With this one – we’re not trying to build it overnight to become a top-six side at the start of the season – all we’ve realised after four years is that we’ve got to transform a little bit, let people go and bring new people in.

Fresh ears, as much as anything, to listen to my voice and ideas.

“It is an important summer for us, there is a lot of business to be done and some big personnel to try to bring in in key positions.

“It’s a huge window for us and we have to get it right. Identifying players and their values is key, and we’ve done that early, so we’re in a good position.”

South London rivals tipped to struggle

by Charlton Athletic in the Championship next season – and the south London rivals are two of the bookies’ favourites for the drop.

The Addicks secured their place in the second tier after three seasons in League One when Patrick Bauer scored in the 94th minute to give them a 2-1 win in the play-off decider against Sunderland at Wembley last weekend.

Current odds on Sky Bet, the Championship’s main sponsors, have the Lions and Lee Bowyer’s side 5/2 to go down in 2019-20.

Barnsley, who won automatic promotion from League One last season, are 15/8.

QPR, Reading and Wigan are all tipped for a season of struggle, at 3/1 to be relegated.

Neil Harris’ side are last favourites for the title, at 66/1, and 16/1 to win promotion to the top flight for only the second time in their history.

Luton Town, who won League One under Millwall’s former head of scouting Mick Harford, are 5/1 for the drop.

The Championship title favourites are Fulham, who were relegated after one season in the Premier League, at 7/1, followed

by Leeds (8/1) and West Brom (9/1).

The 2019-20 EFL season is set to begin with a Friday fixture on August 2.
