Local people can really decide on planning

A

ROUND of applause to the Peckham residents who led a campaign to get the council to use planning law to carefully manage the redevelopment of the borough.

Michelle Male Shaw actually did receive a standing ovation from a small army of supporters when she delivered an impassioned speech to the council last week on protecting Peckham’s Rye Lane in all its “ramshackle”, “higgledy-piggledy” glory from overdevelopment.

The council has now agreed to use a piece of planning law called Article 4 to keep our high streets healthy – with a variety of shops and services. Southwark previously agreed to use this legislation to curb the amount of betting shops and fast food outlets in the borough, but has now agreed to use it to ensure anyone wanting to change the use of a shop will have to ask the council’s permission.

Although the council is very clear they would not and could not block an application simply because it was from a chain store, it could prevent an influx of one type of shop taking over an area.

So, a round of applause to the council too, who listened to local residents and took their concerns on board. They are the current guardians of Southwark and they have the great responsibility of ensuring the borough and its residents are not harmed by change that is too far and too fast.

Eileen Conn, of Peckham Vision, who have been fighting similar battles to preserve Peckham town centre for ten years, said this victory shows how powerful people power can be. “It shows how dedicated working together by local people who work to become well informed about the planning system and their local area can really have an effect,” she said.

Housing credit

REDIT WHERE credit is due Southwark Council is taking back the power to build their own new homes so they don’t have to pander to big developers.

When council leader Peter John vehemently defended the “good deal” done on the Heygate Estate in this paper two weeks ago, he conceded the council would be better off if it was able to build its own homes instead of bargaining with developers who have shareholders to answer to.

Now it seems they have taken the first step towards sidestepping government imposed borrowing caps and the Right to Buy scheme in one go by establishing Southwark Housing Company Ltd (SHC).

SHC can borrow money on a par with developers and as the new properties would be owned by the company and not directly by the council they will also not be eligible for Right to Buy – where council tenants can purchase their homes at a discount. We will see how long it takes the government to close that particular loophole, but fair play to Southwark for doing something to take back the reins.

THERE’S A buzz about Southwark these days and for once it has nothing to do with a new pop-up bar in Peckham or foodie street market in Borough.

It is actually due to a new bee farming apprenticeship, which has seen a growth in urban honey farms across the borough, from Bermonds-

bee to Rother-hive.

Hannah Reeves, a 22-year-old apprentice on the two-year ‘Bee a Bee Farmer’ scheme, tends to hives in the railway arches near Druid Street. Other apprenticeships have hives near Tanner Street and even at London Bridge.

The apprenticeship was launched to counteract the sting-in-the-tail threatening the future of the industry: the age of most bee farmers.

She told the News: “Bee farmers are

dying out. The average age of a bee farmer in the UK is 66. We get regular emails that start ‘We’re very sad to announce the death of…’ The industry badly needs young people to get involved.”

The Bee Farmer’s Association and Rowse Honey are combing the country for people aged between sixteen and 24 to earn their stripes in an unusual but rewarding industry.

Hannah, who is on placement with the London Honey Company, said:

“I’m really enjoying it. I didn’t fancy an office job, so if you like the natural world and outdoor work, it’s a great profession.

“You do need to be prepared for a lot of hard work, as some of the hives weight up to 30 kilograms. They always say that you’re back goes first as a bee farmer, which is why we especially need more young people involved!”

Hannah laughs when she recalls how her friends reacted to her signing

up at the pollen-technic.

She said: “I think they thought I was slightly mad. It’s not really something you think of as a real job.

But they’ve come around now and find it useful. Whenever there’s a wasp in the room they always give me a call.”

POLICE ARE appealing for witnesses after a Bermondsey teenager was left potentially scarred for life following an incident outside a night club last Saturday night.

Photos showing 19-year-old Jodie Hill’s horrific injuries have gone viral online, with Jodie and her family claiming that she was pushed into railings outside The Venue nightclub in New Cross.

Jodie, who was taking care of her younger sister on her first night out, needed 28 stiches to her face after the incident.

She told the News: “I was in the club and a fight happened on the stairs behind me. The bouncers came over and told me to leave. They brought me outside but I was trying to get in because my little sister Brooke was in there and I wanted to make sure she was okay.”

Another girl at the nightclub discovered her soon after unconscious on the street outside.

She has not left her house since returning from hospital on Sunday morning and has said that she is scared how people will react to her wounds.

Her mother Tracie added: “She’s not a silly girl. She wasn’t really drunk and she didn’t fall down. She works in a bar so she knows how to act. She had actually changed out of her heels and into flats about an hour before.”

The Venue released a statement that said: “In response to the recent posts concerning the young lady injured on Friday night we are taking this matter extremely seriously. The Venue would like to say her injuries were sustained outside the club as a result of her falling after she was ejected from the premises.

“They were NOT inflicted by a member of staff as has been stated and the club CCTV proves this and will be handed over to the police whom we will be cooperating with fully in their

A police spokesperson said that detectives were keeping “an open mind” about the circumstance leading to Jodie’s injury.

He said: “They are keen to hear from anyone who was in the venue or the surrounding vicinity between 23:50hrs on Saturday, 25 July and 03:35hrs on Sunday, 26 July, who may have information as to how the woman may have sustained her injuries. Any information provided will be treated in the strictest of confidence.”

SQUATTERS WHO moved into an historic pub last month when it was earmarked to become a Foxtons estate agent, have been evicted.

Squatters booted out of historic Elephant pub

The Elephant and Castle pub has been occupied for weeks by around twenty people - a mixture of protestors taking a stand against the “gentrification” of the area and European migrants.

Bailiffs entered the pub on Thursday morning armed with a possession order from Lambeth County Court. The police were on hand but were not needed.

The group took over the pub, which dates back to the 1700s, in June but a legal loophole meant the police were unable to remove them from commercial property without a court order.

While the squatters were holed up in the pub, the Walworth Society managed to get the old boozer listed as an asset of community value, which means anyone wishing to convert the Elephant and Castle to retail or residential use will now need council approval.

Earlier this year the owners of the venue had their licence revoked following two violent incidents at the end of January. A late-night brawl on January 29 saw a man stabbed “in the eye with a pen, which remained there until it was removed by staff at hospital,” according to Southwark Council’s licensing committee. Two days later, another “serious assault” occurred at the venue, in which one customer accused another of inappropriately touching his girlfriend and struck him, causing facial injuries.

Resident and member of the Save the Clipper group Steve Cornish said: “The rent-a-mob have been aggressive and got paint all over the outside.”

A spokesperson for developers McCullochs, who are seeking planning permission to convert the boozer into flats, told the News that they would soon be removed. He said: “This is the third time that squatters have occupied the pub. We have removed them twice before and have got a court order to remove them again. We’re just waiting for the bailiffs to get back to us.”

THE LONDON Fire Brigade has urged residents to “cool your coals” after a barbeque clean-up led to a garden shed blaze in Bermondsey last week.

They believe that coals used in the BBQ on July 21 were bagged up and put back in the shed while still hot.

When the ashen-faced owner woke up at around 9am the following morning he saw his shed alight and called the fire brigade.

The fire completely destroyed his shed before travelling along a fence into his neighbour’s garden. The fence, along with his neighbour’s shed, was also partly damaged.

Fire crews from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Deptford and New Cross fire stations brought the fire under control in under an hour.

A LFB spokesperson said: “Fires involving barbecues don’t only come during cooking but long after you’ve polished off the bangers and burgers.

It’s important that you cool your coals and ash before you dispose of them.

Also make sure the barbecue is cool before you try to move it.” * A flat on The Gardens in East Dulwich was also damaged by fire on Saturday afternoon.

Around half of the flat in the converted four-storey building and part of the roof was damaged by the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no one was injured.

Council worker caught in online video rant

Employee facing disciplinary says council leader EXCLUSIVE

A COUNCIL employee is facing disciplinary action after a video emerged online showing her shouting profanities at a member of the public in the street following an accident.

A Bermondsey filmmaker who was on the receiving end of the abuse has called for the woman to be sacked after she spat at him, called him an evil c**t and insulted his beard while

wearing a high-vis Southwark Council jacket.

Terry, who did not want to give his surname, was walking down Consort Road in Peckham on Sunday afternoon with a friend when they heard a car come to a screeching stop behind them.

They turned to see a woman lying in the road in front of the car and went over to see if she was alright.

The driver also got out to check on the woman who then became “very hostile” and kept saying she was fine, according to Terry.

As the driver got back in his car, the woman started banging on the bonnet and shouting ‘look what you’ve done, look what you’ve done’ at which point the driver left the scene.

When Terry and his friend said she should not be angry because the driver tried to help her, “that’s when

the abuse came,” said Terry speaking to the News.

The video, which Terry shared on online, shows the council employee shouting at the two men and asking what they had done to help her. Terry can be heard saying “I don’t care” to which the woman responds: “Well I don’t care about you. I don’t care about your beard!”

Terry, who is very proud of his facial hair, then declares: “I love my beard!”

The council employee retorts:” Yeah I suppose you do. I suppose you do pray five times a day.”

Terry is not a Muslim but believes the woman was trying to suggest he was as an insult.

“She’s walking around with those thoughts in her head, behaving that way and representing my council.

You shouldn’t even think about speaking bad of someone’s religion.

That’s not acceptable – she should be sacked for that,” he said.

The woman went on to call Terry a “skanky c**t” an “evil sh*t inside” and an “evil c**t” as he says she followed him down the street spitting at him.

Terry decided to send the video to Southwark Council to show them the conduct of one of their members of staff.

“They need to know this - that their employee is behaving in this way,” said Terry, who has since lodged a complaint at the council headquarters in Tooley Street.

Council Leader, Cllr Peter John, said: "I can confirm that the woman in question is a member of council staff. We take the conduct of our staff extremely seriously, and we have already begun disciplinary proceedings.”

Peckham woman gets council to enforce planning law protecting our high streets

AN ARCHITECT received a standing ovation last week as she successfully petitioned the council to enforce planning law to protect Peckham from overdevelopment.

Michelle Male Shaw gave an impassioned deputation to a meeting of Southwark Council’s cabinet on how the unique micro-economy of Peckham needed to be protected from an influx of chain shops and luxury flats which could force out independent traders with skyrocketing rents.

The Highshore Road resident and a supportive crowd of Peckham residents asked the council to use a piece of planning law called Article 4 to ensure permission would need to be sought from the council before anyone could take over a shop and change its use.

Southwark is already using this legislation to curb the amount of betting shops and fast food outlets in the borough and, thanks to Michelle’s campaign, has now agreed to use the same rule to help protect the whole borough’s shopping parades from an overabundance of estate agents and chain stores.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “We understand local concerns and want to promote healthy mixed high streets across the borough, including Rye Lane.

“We will use available planning powers to do this, and we will be making an Article 4 direction to help protect all shopping parades in Southwark.

“This will help prevent the proliferation of payday lenders and fast food shops, and also make sure that estates agents and other similar uses are in the appropriate places. This will mean any

Removing the John McAslan arch, which was commissioned by Southwark Council in 1993, will make room for two five-storey buildings to house new flats, cafes and community spaces.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “The arch has been a part of Peckham for many years and we know that there are a range of views on whether it should be kept or not. After listening to local residents and weighing up the options we have decided to remove the arch so that we can improve the square and have new

cafés, cultural space and some new homes.”

Previously, local defenders of the arch, like Peckham architect, Benedict O’Looney, said it would be a “great tragedy” if it were removed.

“It’s such a generous open space. It seems insane to take away something so rare, unusual and an iconic symbol of Peckham,” he told the News in March.

Cllr Williams pledged that some of the new flats will be council homes (though how many is not clear at this stage) and half of those will be reserved for local residents who are currently living in overcrowded conditions.

Carl Turner Architects will now prepare a planning application for submission.

Police release CCTV showing gang attack on innocent man

POLICE HAVE released sickening footage showing a dozen youths attacking a man in an unprovoked attack in Tower Bridge in May.

The 29-year-old victim, who was returning from a friend’s wedding, had been “minding his own business” on the Southwark side of the bridge when the mob attacked on May 31.

The group are described as being aged between their mid-teens and earlytwenties, from an Asian background and with east London accents. Two of the youths were riding Boris bikes.

The attack began when one of the group punched the victim in the back of the head as he walked by, causing him to fall to the ground. The rest of the gang then viciously kicked and punched him while

he lay defenceless on the pavement.

Luckily, the victim was left with just cuts and bruises after the brutal assault.

A City of London Police spokesperson said: “A group of young men carried out a vicious, cowardly and unprovoked attack on a lone male minding his own business. The victim suffered several blows to the head and body and was lucky to walk away with only cuts and bruises.

“It is paramount that we catch those responsible as the group’s next victim might end up with very serious injuries.

HUNDREDS OF mourners gathered last weekend to give Tommy Blackmore a final send-off.

A special extended funeral service was held at Honor Oak Crematorium after a funeral cortège travelled from his home in Vaughan Street, via Millwall Football Club and the Blue in Bermondsey.

Dozens of colourful floral tributes, many portraying items relating to Tommy’s life such as a football scarf, the Nandos logo and a bottle of ketchup, were transported to the cemetery in a Millwall Football Club bus.

Following the funeral, many mourners held a celebration of Tommy’s life at The Den stadium, where they sang songs including “One Tommy Blackmore” and “Spirit in the Sky.”

Special day to remember Tommy

A SPECIAL day will be held in memory of Tommy Blackmore this Sunday, with all proceeds going towards a community charity fund being set up in the late Bermondsey boy’s name.

The fund will help towards a range of good causes in the area, from sponsorship for youth football teams to general fundraising appeals from local charities.

The event, held at Beckenham Town Football Club, will begin at midday on July 2.

A four-team football tournament will take place, while a bouncy castle and face-painters will entertain the kids. A raffle and auction will also take place, with a signed Millwall Football Club shirt up for grabs.

The event will start at midday and take place at Beckenham Town Football Club in Eden Park Avenue, Kent, BR33JL.

Tommy was a passionate Lions fan, and also played for a number of local clubs, including Stansfeld FC. The team held a minute’s silence before a match that was played on the morning of the funeral.

The 20-year-old Bermondsey boy was laid to rest a month and a half after being killed at an incident near Tower Bridge. He was found “critically injured” in Queen Elizabeth Street by police and rushed to hospital. He couldn’t be saved and died soon after.

A 28-year-old man, Lloyd Smythe of Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, was arrested and charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Central Criminal Court on November 29.

Tommy’s mother Maureen told the News: “We are all so grateful to the hundreds of people who showed their support for the family and love for Tommy at the funeral.

It was a real celebration of his life and the perfect send-off.”

Footballer plans FA Cup tribute

A FEMALE footballer from Bermondsey will pay tribute to Tommy Blackmore when she plays in the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Gilly Flaherty, who was “close friends” with the late Bermondsey boy, will wear a black armband and football boots emblazoned with his initials. His brothers will be treated to VIP treatment at the famous stadium for the game.

The 23-year-old will line up for Chelsea against Notts County exactly a week after attending Tommy’s funeral in Honor Oak. She said: “I met Tommy through his brothers and we became close friends. We met up every Tuesday for a Starbucks and loved to talk about football.

“He always had something to say whenever I bought new boots. We were

both fans of classic all-black football boots, which is what I will be wearing at Wembley. We were also both massive Millwall fans.”

After impressing as a youth player, Gilly was signed by Arsenal. She played for one of the most successful women’s sides of all time, winning eleven trophies during her seven years at the club.

Last year she was signed by Chelsea, who will be aiming to win their first ever Women’s FA Cup this Saturday.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to it. Everyone, whether you’re a boy or a girl, dreams of playing in the FA Cup when they’re a kid. Chelsea reached the final in 2012 but lost, so I’m really hoping we can get our first win.”

Chelsea will play Notts County at Wembley Stadium at 1pm this Saturday.

Gilly’s free fitness club at Southwark Park takes place every Tuesday from 7-8pm.

A GROUP of Bermondsey residents claim their lives have been made a “living hell” by the newly-launched Druid Street Market and have urged the council to shut it down.

Arnold Estate residents living opposite the weekly gourmet bazaar have submitted a petition to the council complaining about noise, mess and antisocial behaviour.

Margaret Forrest, who has lived in the estate for 38 years, told the News that the situation was “a joke.”

She said: “It is noisy, dirty and inconvenient for residents. The street is packed with people who just stare at you if you try to drive through, and the mess has to be seen to be believed. There are overflowing bins left on our side of the road and rats everywhere. It’s disgusting.

“The noise is really bad. We work hard during the week and look forward to the weekend but now we don’t want to be here on a Saturday. If it’s sunny and you want to relax in the garden you can’t, because of the noise and the fuss.”

She added that the situation was compounded by the nearby breweries, where many people stayed after the market’s 5pm closing time to drink in the street.

“Something needs to be done. The residents around here have had enough and we want the council and the people

who run the market to start listening to us.

We’ve lived here long enough and put up with enough problems around here and this is the final straw.”

A spokesperson for the market said that she was saddened by the protest, and emphasised its commitment to the Bermondsey community.

She said: “Everyone involved in the market, from the founder to the investors, are local people. We give priority to local producers and are appealing for even more Bermondsey people to get involved. If we could, it would be totally local.

“It is a shame because the aim of the market is to integrate with the community and highlight the people and food of the area.”

Councillor Darren Merrill, cabinet member for environment and the public realm, said: “Druid Street Market, one of the Council’s High Street Challenge funded projects, brings together businesses to boost the local economy for the benefit of residents and employers. While the market has only been opened for a few weeks, we have received complaints which we’re currently reviewing. We hope to work closely with local residents, businesses and the market to ensure the whole community benefits from this venture.”

A SEVENTEEN-year-old YouTube prankster nearly drowned after jumping off Tower Bridge last week as part of an “extremely dangerous” stunt.

Shah Faisal Shinwari, whose account on the video-sharing website

has over 25,000 subscribers, described it as his “stupidest idea ever.”

In front of startled tourists, Shah leapt over the barrier and into the water on July 16, immediately finding himself in trouble.

Wearing a heavy hooded top and shoes, he struggled to swim against the fast-flowing current and

swallowed mouthfuls of water.

After calling for help, he was thrown a life-preserver by an RNLI crew who then pumped his stomach and lungs of the dirty water. After the incident, Shah said: “It originally was a dare from one of my subscribers and I attempted it as I like doing crazy s**t.

This was later very regretted by me and I realized it was the stupidest idea

ever.”

Tony Wafer, Community Safety Manager for RNLI, said that Shah was “extremely lucky” to have escaped largely unharmed. He said: “As a lifesaving organisation that works on the Thames in London, we are extremely disappointed that this young man chose to risk his life in this way. He was extremely lucky that

the outcome wasn’t more serious.

We’re glad that this young man regrets his actions, however we would strongly discourage anyone from doing anything like this.

“Jumping into the Thames from a bridge is extremely dangerous – the shock of cold water makes it very difficult to swim and strong currents can rapidly sweep people away.”

Pensioner who spent years searching for long-lost baby sister’s grave finds dogs using it as a toilet

A PENSIONER who spent years searching for her long lost baby sister’s grave was horrified to find packs of dogs using it as a toilet.

Joy Pearce was adopted as a baby after most of her family died of TB in the 1940s.

The Taylor family lived in Dover Court off the Old Kent Road when baby Shirley died at just sixteen months old in 1943. When Joy’s older sister asked their mother where Shirley was, she simply replied: ‘She’s not coming back Jeanie’.

In the next two years both Joy’s parents died of the infectious disease, leaving Jeanie and Joy orphaned. Jeanie, then ten years old, was sent to live with their grandmother and eleven-month-old Joy was adopted by a Dulwich family and grew up on Lordship Lane.

After meeting a distant aunt at a funeral two years ago, Joy managed to track down where her mother and father were

buried – in unmarked graves in Manor Park cemetery.

Joy was “absolutely thrilled” to find her parents after so long but was mystified as to why baby Shirley was not buried with them.

Since then Joy, 70, has been searching for her sister and recently discovered Shirley was buried in a common grave in Nunhead Cemetery.

“I was quite excited in a way,” said Joy, who went to visit the grave last week.

But when she arrived she was “devastated” to see groups of dogs running around “a complete and utter jungle.”

“I saw at least a dozen dogs running around defecating over the whole place,” said Joy. “It was just appalling, absolutely appalling. It’s just devastating to see.”

Joy was informed by a member of staff in the cemetery office that they had let some of the areas ‘go back to nature’.

Police hunt after man shot

POLICE ARE searching for a gunman after a shooting in Bermondsey in the early hours of Friday morning.

The victim managed to make it to a south London hospital, where the police were called. He was treated for gunshot wounds, which were not life-threatening.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred under the bridge in Rail Sidings Road, just off St James Road, at around 3.45am.

Police have not released any description of the person or people wanted in connection with the shooting, which took place just around the corner from the St James of Bermondsey pub.

CCTV footage from the pub unfortunately only shows police arriving at the scene and does not cover the area where the attack took place.

Detectives from the Met’s Trident and Area Crime Command are investigating.

Enquiries continue. Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Councillor Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “We take any form of littering very seriously and do our best to both educate dog owners and enforce against wrongdoers.

“It’s really important that all park and open space visitors, take care of their surroundings and give some thought to other users,” added Cllr Merrill, who confirmed there will soon be wardens in the cemetery who will able to issue fines to any offending dog owners.

LIVING DONOR TO COMPETE IN GAMES EAST DULWICH

A WOMAN who donated her kidney, her eggs and part of her liver to total strangers, is now preparing to compete in the British Transplant Games.

Sue Gianstefani, of East Dulwich became the second person in the country to donate part of her liver to a stranger earlier this year and is possibly the only person in the UK to have made multiple altruistic organ donations.

Accepting organs from a stranger, or an altruistic living donor, was illegal in the UK until 2006 because of concerns that people could be coerced or offered financial incentives to undertake the surgery.

Now it is possible to donate your organs or parts of your organs to total strangers without ever meeting the recipient.

For years Sue has been battling to raise the profile of living donors and this weekend she is hoping to get them on the winners podium at the British Transplant Games in Newcastle.

The sporting competition was set up in1978 to promote transplantation and get more people on the NHS Organ Donation Register.

This year is the first year living donors have been officially invited to take part, much to Sue’s delight.

“It’s absolutely fantastic! I’m really excited about it,” said Sue, 47, who is competing in a freestyle swimming relay on Saturday.

“Living donors make up 46 percent of all organ donors, yet we are scarcely mentioned alongside deceased organ donation, which I, along with others, am trying to change,” she added.

After training three or four times a week in Crystal Palace pool Sue has got her time down to 47 seconds for 50m.

“I’m just excited to take part but it would be great to bring back a medal,” said Sue. Following surgery to remove one of her liver lobes in December 2013 to save someone else’s life, Sue has focused her energy on encouraging other people to become living donors.

“It’s a really fantastic way of helping people. It completely changes other

people’s lives for minimal risk to your own life,” she said.

“Everybody’s overwhelmed with the world’s problems and we think there’s nothing we can do about it. This is one way we can actually do something positive.”

RESIDENTS OF the Silverlock Estate say they feel like “the forgotten people” due to its unusual location straddling three police wards.

They say this has resulted in a lack of “joined-up” crime-fighting in the area, with incidents not being properly investigated and claim responsibilities are being shirked by the different teams.

The estate is off Rotherhithe New Road and is covered by two policing teams from Southwark and one from Lewisham.

David Eyles, Chair of the Silverlock Estate TRA, said: “The people here feel that they are forgotten. There are people from outside the estate coming here and committing crimes: burglaries, car crime, sexual assault, personal violence, drugs...

“When the police do investigate the residents are made to feel like criminals.

It seems that the thought is because you come from Bermondsey, you’re scum.

That’s not true, we have a fantastic community here with some very welleducated people.”

Mystery still surrounds the events at a party earlier this month, at which residents believe a shooting occurred.

Police and the council, however, believe that an injury was sustained after a gas canister which had been on a barbeque exploded. Gill Davis, the TRA’s vicechair, said that she appreciated the work of the local police officers but felt that they just weren’t able to do enough. She said: “I feel bad for them. Sometimes they try to do a job here but then get called out

Bobbie Milton, secretary for the TRA, added: “The problems come from people who are not from the estate, and often not even from Southwark. But when the police do come it’s hours or days later and too late.”

Local Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector Steve Landers denied that the estate was being ignored by police. He said: “Officers from the Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhoods Team patrol and speak with residents on the estate regularly and the local MP is also appraised regarding operational work and activity carried out in the area. I am in regular contact with the local Safer Neighbourhoods ward panel chair and will speak with him to see whether any of these concerns have been raised with him.”

Violent burglary WALWORTH: A man was stabbed

in a violent burglary on Friday evening.

The victim, reported to be in his 40s was found outside a block of flats on the Rockingham Estate just after 8pm suffering from a stab wound to the shoulder.

The police were called to Rockingham Street to reports of a disturbance and the ambulance service treated the victim at the scene before taking him to a central London hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life threatening. An eighteen-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

LAST YEAR the Southwark Blue Plaque was awarded to F A Albin and Sons Funeral Directors for caring for Southwark’s bereaved for the last two hundred years.

Barry Albin-Dyer said he was “over the moon” to have the historic family firm recognised in his lifetime and it will now form part of his lasting legacy after he sadly passed away in June.

This year there are four nominations fighting it out to win the award to mark Southwark’s rich heritage – a wartime fireman, a golfing prodigy, a solarium and a pioneering women’s welfare project.

George A Roberts was a towering man who hailed from Trinidad and ended up fighting fires in Southwark. He enlisted to fight for the British forces in the First World War and used his towering strength to throw German bombs right back at them (he could manage an impressive distance of 74 yards.)

A NIGERIAN man has been sentenced to serve eight and a half years for a violent rape after which he will be deported.

Olaoluwa Ibrahim, of Relf Road in Peckham, forced his victim into a driveway, pushed her to the floor and raped her in the early hours of June 24 last year.

The victim had been on a night out with friends and had just got off a bus in Maida Vail at around 2.30am when Ibrahim approached her from behind.

He tried to talk to her but when she ignored him and walked away he grabbed her, raped her and stole her mobile phone.

The police were able to trace Ibrahim through tracking the usage of the stolen phone.

Ibrahim originally denied having sex with the victim, but when his DNA was found on her clothing he changed his story and claimed they had had consensual sex.

The traumatised victim, who has since moved to Australia, was allowed to give evidence via video link before Ibrahim was found guilty.

On passing sentence the judge ruled the 38-year-old would be deported back to Nigeria once he has served his prison sentence.

Detective Constable Adam Knott, Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: ""Ibrahim has shown no remorse or honesty from the point of arrest and his deception continued throughout the trial, putting the victim through the trauma of having to recount her ordeal in court.

“I hope it is of some comfort to her to know he will now spend a considerable amount of time in prison before being deported. He is a genuinely dangerous offender and I am pleased he has been removed from public life.

"I would urge anyone who has been the victim of sexual violence to come forward safe in the knowledge that they will be listened to, the case will be thoroughly investigated and we can provide bespoke victim care depending on individual needs.”

During the Second World War he earned a British Empire Medal for his brave services as a section leader at New Cross Fire Station.

Henry Cotton was reportedly banned from the Alleyn’s School cricket team after he wrote a disrespectful letter to the headmaster.

As a result, Cotton and his brother Leslie took up golf instead and joined the Aquarius Golf Club in Honor Oak in 1920. At the young age of seventeen, Henry turned pro and went on to win three Open Championships and was placed in the top Open ten seventeen times.

More than twenty years before the National Health Service was established, Bermondsey was already curing its citizens of TB with the first purpose built solarium in Britain.

In 1926, three houses and gardens in Grange Road were taken over as a Light Treatment Centre, equipped with eight large mercury vapour lamps, two carbon arc lamps, one water-cooled Kromayer lamp and two radiant heat lamps. New cases of

TB fell from 413 in 1922 to 294 in 1927. By 1935 there were 30,000 annual attendances and 30 lamps in use daily, supported by three dedicated nurses.

The Blackfriars Settlement has been helping the community for 126 years but was originally set up as a Women's University Settlement in 1887 by the ladies of Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

Women from London colleges were invited to live at the Settlement rent free in exchange for their work “devising and advancing schemes” to ‘elevate’ the poor women and children of Bermondsey. In 1961 it became Blackfriars Settlement to reflect the work the project did involving men and the wider community.

LOOKING BACK TO THE ‘80s

New book captures the soul of SE15’s recent past

arvis Cocker makes an appearance in a collection of personal photographs documenting the life of a young man in 1980s Peckham, writes Amelia Burr...

Back then Steve Ball was drumming with rock n’ roll band The Psycho Daisies and hanging out at The Grove pub in Camberwell with other budding musicians like the young Pulp star.

When Cocker became a breakway Brit-pop hit in the ‘90s Steve said it was “about time.”

“He’d been in the music industry since 1983. He started when the Psycho Daisies started and he kept going and he finally made it.

“Now he’s on 6 music and we love it - we love him. He’s a national institution. He’s a great guy too, really kind, really considerate,” added Steve.

At the age of eighteen Steve

suddenly had a stroke and was paralysed on his right side, Steve’s photography became his only creative outlet along with painting.

“None of it was planned or staged,” said Steve of the nostalgic collection of photographs which were discovered on Facebook.

His publisher friend Jane, of south London based publisher Jane & Jeremy, insisted on putting his photographic trip down memory lane into a book entitled Peckham Loves Me. Father-of-one Steve, 50, has now lived in the same house in Woods Road for 32 years so is looking forward to the book launch tomorrow night being held at the nearby Multi-Storey car park from 6pm. There have only been 100 copies printed so get there early if you want to beat Steve’s huge family to it.

Southwark Council to set up own housing company

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is setting up its own housing company so it can defy government rules and borrow money to build new homes in the borough.

Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle opened the day of good food, stilt walkers, and live music – including an appearance from Elvis.

The annual event to celebrate the rich diversity of the estate was organised by the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association chair Joan Morris, who said the ‘Pelican’s Got Talent’ contest was a highlight of the day.

“Those young people should be on Britain’s Got Talent,” she said proudly, adding that the event had been a ‘huge success’.

“It was beautiful to see everyone coming together,” she said.

Southwark Housing Company Ltd (SHC) would also allow the council to sidestep the controversial Right to Buy scheme, which lets council tenants buy their properties.

Speaking to the News, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, Cllr Richard Livingstone, said the company limited by shares (with a single £1 share owned by the council) is a necessary and “imaginative” way around restrictive borrowing caps imposed by the government.

This borrowing ceiling is in place to keep the country’s balance sheet looking healthy but means councils are at a disadvantage to developers who can borrow larger amounts based on the rental income they will receive from new builds.

As new properties built by SHC would technically be owned by the company and not the council, they would also not be eligible for council tenants to purchase through the Right to Buy scheme.

“That’s not the reason we’re doing this,” said Cllr Livingstone after local authorities like Southwark came

under attack from housing minister Brandon Lewis for trying to establish such companies.

“The actions of a handful of councils mean the Right to Buy for some tenants is now under threat – I will not support any council setting up a housing company unless their tenants continue to have the chance of having a Right to Buy,” Mr Lewis said in March.

Although Southwark Council loses hundreds of council homes every year through Right to Buy and predicts the loss of nearly ten thousand homes over the next 30 years, Cllr Livingstone insists the SHC is only being set up to enable the borough to build more new homes.

“There is a challenge around Right to Buy and how it takes away from housing stock, but we’re not doing this to get around that. It’s a way for us to build 11,000 new homes,” he said.

The SHC is being established now but Cllr Livingstone says he does not anticipate it will be needed for a few years yet as Southwark can stay comfortably within the borrowing cap for now.

The council is also taking steps to introduce a licensing scheme for private landlords which seeks to improve living conditions for Southwark’s renters and tackle the borough’s troublesome tenants.

Culture Minister launches Wi-Fi scheme in library NUNHEAD

AFTER NUNHEAD has barely got over the excitement of having its first cash machine, news came this week of Wi-Fi at the library.

Culture Minister Ed Vaizey visited Nunhead Library last week to announce the learning centre’s inclusion in a new BT and Barclays initiative to help more people get online with free community Wi-Fi. In the same week, Southwark Council announced a new library will be built at the heart of the new Aylesbury development.

The new community hub to be built on the old Amersham Site on Thurlow Street will replace the existing East

Street library, which the council says does not have the space to offer a full range of modern services.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark’s cabinet member for business, employment and culture, said: “While other councils are closing libraries, in Southwark we have worked hard to keep investing and keeping them in place as a vital community space.

“Our East Street library has served local people well but it isn’t set up to offer the full range of services that our residents expect and deserve.

“The new Aylesbury library will offer services to all people but with a particular focus on children and young people that, we hope, will help it become a focal point for the community that surrounds it.”

We want to improve council estates

I WANT to allay some of the fears that may have been caused by the irresponsible comments by the Liberal Democrat spokesperson in your article last week on the Savills report on housing investment.

The report was simply written to identify those estates that will need more investment than others over the next few years. It is in no way judging people who live on the estate, but does look at factors beyond just the four walls of a flat or house itself to ask whether there are other issues the council ought to look at whilst investing to make every council home warm, dry and safe and providing quality kitchens and bathrooms.

Take for example the two estates covered in your report: the Acorn Estate and the Silverlock Estate. These are both estates that I know very well, having been their local councillor for the last nine years, so I know that they need more investment than many other estates in Southwark. Every winter, I know that these two estates will be the ones in my ward that have the most problems with their heating systems.

Both estates have had far more of their fair share of problems with anti-social behaviour and crime.

The Savills report identifies issues like this so that we can start a conversation with the tenants and residents on the estate to find the best way to tackle those problems whilst we are investing millions to improve their homes. The report does not seek to decide the future of an estate, although I have also made clear more radical regeneration schemes should only ever be the last resort. We will be working constructively with local residents to get the right solutions that the local community of those estates can support.

The Lib Dems should be welcoming our desire to have those conversations, not condemning them.

Stop machines replacing humans

I’M CONCERNED that shops are replacing people with machines too quickly.

We have a problem with high unemployment in this country and entry-level jobs like cashiers are essential to get people working.

I see the change in Peckham, where Asda has completely replaced manned checkouts with self-checkouts. On Wednesday 22nd July there was only one member of staff for the entire checkout area (of approx. 10 checkouts).

I also see it in London Underground stations which are removing staffed counters and replacing them with ticket machines (Southwark, St John’s Wood…).

Another example is the Post Office which is encouraging self-service and greatly reducing employees at their counters; it’s not just supermarkets.

Having chatted to staff in some of these stores (after waiting to be served at a manned till) I know that their management are under pressure to

increase self-service and to reduce staff.

I believe that we customers have the power to help our fellow human beings by waiting to be served by an employee and asking for one if there are none on the tills. If we keep demand for staffed checkouts up, then management will keep staff.

The alternative is that we use selfservice checkouts and staff have their hours cut. If you request a staffed till you might queue for a minute longer, but I believe it is worth it for more people to have a chance of gaining the benefits that come with being employed.

Tories will soon be fast tracked to extinction

In recent disputes for the first time in many years ASLEF and the RMT took industrial action together.

Many passengers support the industrial action because they recognise train drivers are acting to protect rail travellers and that without resistance workers would be working 24/7 without proper breaks and a work life balance. Check out the long term health problems associated with night working. Reduced cognitive ability and an increased risk of cancer.

Ticket Offices are needed for vulnerable travellers and make women feel safer when using transport.

London has a vibrant tourism business and holiday makers need help to use the tube.

Mr Bacon then refers to the Trade Union Reform Bill announced in the last session of Parliament. This bill introduces ballot thresholds that the Tory Party don’t meet and yet the Tory’s believe they have democratic authority to run the country, slash and burn the welfare state and redistribute wealth from the poor to the rich. Of course Trade Unions want the big participation rates in our ballots, that’s why we want work place ballots and

electronic voting. This exposes the grand hypocrisy of the Tory Government – the last thing they want is mass participation in Trade Union Ballots which is why they refuse to update Thatcher’s anti TU legislation and allow unions to use electronic voting.

Striking is always a position of last resort and usually prompted by the employers failure to listen to workers.

It costs our members their wages, many of whom are on poverty pay and some of whom are set to lose up to £3k per annum as a result of announced changes to working tax credits.

Since 2010 Southwark UNISON has held only two days of strike action.

This country has the lowest rate of industrial action in Europe and the rate has been falling steadily. The Tory’s have had to back off on England Only Voting, they’ve been bloodied by their attempts to repeal Fox Hunting so now they’re going after a different prey.

Thankfully their very small majority means that the Tory Party may be fast tracked to extinction. Here’s hoping.

College is going from strength to strength

IT HAS been no secret that Lewisham Southwark College has been through hard times of late.

We understand that this has also been difficult for our communities, with much being reported in the press.

During these times, the dedication of staff to put learners’ needs at the centre of all they do has not faltered, and the College has enjoyed many student successes.

Efforts from the staff have been recognised by both the FE Commissioner and Ofsted. In an Ofsted visit in July they recognised that improvements have been made in all areas of the College. In a meeting on 23rd July FE Commissioner, David Collins said: “I am delighted by the progress made since the appointment of the new board and senior management team. Both the quality of

provision and the College’s financial position have improved significantly and I am confident that next year will prove to be a particularly successful year for staff and students.” The management team referenced are coming with a passion to get the College back on the road to success with the aim to get back to its former ‘excellent’ status.

We’re in an exciting stage of development, with our Waterloo campus on The Cut developing fast to become a centre of excellence right at the heart of London. The campus will give students the feel of a work environment. Over the coming months we will be opening our doors for you all to visit – details will be on our website.

We continue to expand on excellent employer engagement – in creating and delivering our courses as well as offering work experience and apprenticeships.

We work with over 140 businesses in Southwark alone, and once the Waterloo campus is finished in summer 2016, we will be increasing this number further. We have strong connections and long term relationships with local and national companies in Lewisham and across south east London.

A good example of this is our recently launched ‘The Bridge’, a PreEmployment Construction Academy for students at our Deptford Bridge campus. The Academy has companies such as the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as partners – ensuring that students leave with the skills required to get straight into work.

“We’ve partnered with the College on the Academy due to the high standard of education that students receive.

Students learn-by-doing with a range of highly skilled staff and technicians, and we believe the Academy will create more skilled workers to help build the future London.” said CITB representative Chris Carter-Rowlands.

S A first time expectant mum in King’s College Hospital, back in 2005, I had every intention of breastfeeding my baby.

I knew that in doing so I would be improving my baby’s health and mine, reducing her risk of ear infections and tummy upsets, reducing my risk of breast and ovarian cancer – and it was free!

The reality in the first few weeks after giving birth was somewhat different.

Breastfeeding was painful to begin with, but I was very lucky to have advice and support from really experienced community-based midwives, who showed me what to do, encouraged me through the painful first weeks, and were on hand whenever I needed advice.

Last week, I presented a petition in Parliament, in support of 4,000 local residents who are concerned about the loss of highly experienced midwives from ‘milk spots’ cafes in Southwark and Lambeth. The milk spots support new mothers who are breastfeeding.

Staffed by specialist midwives, they provide a gold standard for breastfeeding support in the community.

Over the past 10 years they have been a lifeline, supporting thousands of women to give their babies the best start in life.

King’s College Hospital is under intensive financial pressure. From a balanced budget in 2010 the Tory-Lib Dem coalition left the hospital with a deficit of £47m and rising at the general election. The reasons for the deficit include a shortage of nurses and doctors, resulting in King’s having to employ too many agency staff. And this, while the coalition government cut the number of nursing training posts in London. There are more difficult decisions ahead, but in my view it is not an acceptable consequence of the pressures on our NHS that services like the milk spots, which support people to make the best choices for their health, should be threatened.

Spitfire Grill is a musical getting its UK premiere here, and is one of those musicals where just about every word is a lyric, with barely a line of dialogue, so you have to follow every song sung to keep up with the narrative.

The songs are pretty much standard musical fare and they are performed competently here. I did find it just a tad flat with the minimal set and would have liked just a little flickering neon to give a little feel for a rural American diner. Or even a coffee cup.

Steamy stuff ON THE hottest day of the year the Globe was practically steaming. Dominic Dromgoole's final summer season includes Shakespeare’s boisterous and bawdy 'Measure for Measure', writes Susan Hallissey...

What can I say? It was loud, it was fun and it was bamboozling!

Isabella, played quietly by Gale, finally brews up a storm and the uncomfortable scene with Angelo almost assaulting her is nearly lost amongst the hilarity.

No matter, for when Duke Vincentio returns in his dashing yellow hose, he sorts it all out!

Obviously not without a few twists and turns before hand.

This production has given me the chance to use the wonderful word 'rambunctious' so go and enjoy. Is it a comedy, drama or a problem play? With a host of offbeat characters who cares?

Baila Brazil is a musical journey into the heart and soul of the African and urban roots of acclaimed dance company Balé de Rua, which premiered at Sydney Opera House in January 2015. Inspired

by North-American street dance, capoeira and samba, the company’s energetic yet elegant style is born from the everyday lives of many of the company who grew up in the favelas of Uberlândia in Brazil.

Balé de Rua was originally developed as an art project in the poor neighbourhoods of Uberlândia. Since being discovered at the Biennale de la Danse of Lyon in 2002, the company have performed at leading venues across the world, bringing their exuberance and energy to more than 500,000 people in 13 different countries. They have developed free schools in their hometown and every year train more than 300 children from local communities, including all of the dancers in the professional company.

The WW1 hero who could throw a bomb 74 yards Will George A Roberts get your vote for a Southwark Blue Plaque?

A

young soldier who earned the nickname the ‘Coconut Bomber’ in the First World War went on to spend the next war fighting fires in Southwark.

Sergeant George Arthur Roberts is the first contender for this year’s Southwark Blue Plaque award for his contribution to the borough at a time of great change and turmoil.

George was born in 1890 on the Caribbean island of Trinidad and enrolled in the Trinidad Army as a youngster. In those peaceful days there was not much excitement to be had on the tropical island for a young man ready for battle. So when the war began, the enthusiastic young volunteer signed up to the European Service and worked his way to England, where he was placed in the Middlesex Regiment.

After fourteen months of training, George was shipped off to France and the action he had craved back in Trinidad would soon be upon him.

A clipping from the Every Week magazine in 1918 says he did “splendid service” in the Dardanelles and served in many “severe engagements” in those torrid months as he was injured in both the battle of Loos and the Somme.

He earned his nickname as the Coconut Bomber because he could throw bombs like he used to throw coconuts as a child – at least that is what was reported by the Every Week. “…he showed great proficiency as a Battalion Bomber, being able to throw his bomb a distance of 74 yards. This

extraordinary throw was largely the result of his youthful experience in bringing down coconuts from the palms in his native island,” read the article.

He was taken back to visit Trinidad in 1921 and 1935 to help recruit others to the war effort. He is said to have given “vigorous speeches on behalf of his adopted country”, which were so rousing that 250 men signed up immediately.

After the First World War, George settled at 84 Meeting House Lane in Peckham. When he met his first wife, Margaret in 1920, they moved to 40 Bournemouth Road before settling in the Lewis Trust Dwellings in Warner Road, Camberwell and this remained George’s home until he died in January, 1970.

Not a man to shy away from danger, as the Second World War began, George signed up to the National Fire Service.

In 1943 the former electrical engineer was made a section leader and in 1944 he was awarded a British Empire Medal for “general duties at New Cross Fire Station and for his part as a founder and pioneer of the Discussion and Education groups of the Fire Service throughout the Second World War.” These voluntary talking shops were a part of a national move to try and prevent a repetition of a ‘sleepwalk’ to war and a fascist state through open debate.

London firemen like George led the way as 15,000 men and women would

go to meetings at their local station houses every week and hear speakers on any given topic from what to do with Germany after the war, to hobbies and books.

“If what I am doing can assist in some small way to bring about a better understanding and a true fellowship amongst the peoples of the earth, I shall be extremely happy,” George said in a BBC interview for a programme called ‘Calling the West Indies’ recorded in 1947.

In the same interview George was asked if he ever considered returning to his home to Trinidad.

“As much as I hate the cold and fog of winter, fuel cuts, food rationing and the prospect of very difficult times further ahead, I feel I shall be happier here with my family. But I hope to see the West Indies again.

“Memories of the grand reception I had on my two short visits in 1921 and again in 1935 linger on. Cheerio West Indies. I am always with you in spirit, and I hope to visit you soon,” he said.

George and Margaret had two sons.

Cyril was born in 1921 and Victor the following year. Both boys joined up to serve in the Second World War and Cyril’s regiment was captured in France before Dunkirk. He remained a Prisoner of War in Germany’s Stalag 383 until 1944. Victor served with the Royal Artillery.

Local historian, Stephen Bourne, who nominated George Roberts for the Southwark Blue Plaque, has spent years

researching who he calls a “forgotten Camberwell hero.”

“He was a Trinidadian from the old British Empire. Britain would have been his mother country. He came to serve in the First World War, which is commendable, but then remained here and had a family here,” said Stephen, who notes that George also represented the British Legion from the 1920s and was a founder member of the League of Coloured Peoples in 1931.

“He continued with that sense of responsibility to the wider community.

In the Second World War he then becomes a fireman and serves Londoners in very dangerous circumstances,” said Stephen. “He’s always been a forgotten figure but he was connected to all these organisations and received the British Empire Medal so he was clearly

recognised at the time but as time has passed he’s been forgotten.”

George was indeed so noted for his work at the time that he was painted by famous portrait artist, Norman Hepple, which featured in a war time journal.

Sadly the whereabouts of the original painting is now unknown but the vision of a brave man who tried to create a better world lives on.

FEARLESSLY I declared I would be doing The Bermondsey Mile, an internationally known walk that takes in seven of the microbreweries in Bermondsey, on Saturday when they open their doors to the public, writes Michael Holland....

On the morning of my trek, though, my two compatriots dropped out leaving me with not a little trepidation at the thought of going this alone. I mean, who’s going to shovel me up and get me home if it all goes wrong?

First up was a pint of 5% Pale Ale at Fourpure Brewing Co., based in a railway arch at the back of an industrial estate off Rotherhithe New Road. As you turn the corner you can see a happy throng sitting at tables supping away, merrily chatting with their friends or anyone else that may be sitting there. It was a crisp beer with fresh, citrussy notes, so a good start to the day ahead. There is also a stall selling craft hotdogs, which seemed to be going down very well with the clientele. After enjoying that first pint I made tracks for the next stop on the list: Partizan Brewing in Almond Road, behind the Ancient Foresters. As I walked there I could already feel a tipsy tingle from the first Pale Ale. On arrival at this arch I could see that the customers were similar: a nice mix of middle-aged beer enthusiasts doing The Mile, and groups of younger boys and girls enjoying each other’s

company and a refreshing drink, with no particular plans to go anywhere else but the bar they are in.

At Partizan there is less choice but enough for me to find the 7.8% Triple, a smooth, silent assassin kind of ale that could very well creep up on you.

Partizan is spread over two arches with outside seating as well as inside. An all-weather establishment, as it were.

The next stop is The Kernel Brewery, which was the first to set up shop in the area, thereby rekindling an industry that was once a big employer here. On the way I cut through The Blue for a snack in Dun’s Deli to soak up some of that strong ale, and found myself in a strangely talkative mood. Must be the beer!

The Kernel is The Daddy, and it was here I realised that if I was going to get to the end of my journey I would need to slow down, so I opted for a 2/3 pint of the Sour Raspberry. It was more like a strong, fizzy fruit juice, but I had to have a go as I have sampled all the other Kernel beers before.

The Kernel shuts at 2pm, rather than the 5pm like the others on the agenda, and after August will continue brewing but not open to the public any more. It will be a sad loss to the Bermondsey Mile.

With the sun beating down on me I was feeling the full joys of summer as I made my way to the next pit stop, Brew By Numbers. This is right in the main part of the tour so they have a £3 deposit on glasses to stop people wandering off to the next bar. This was very busy, a hundred-plus people. I tried a 5.5% Golden Ale that had a wonderful aftertaste of bitter hops.

Gorgeous. This is a good place to get some sustenance in one of the many food outlets nearby.

I was seriously slowing down now so found a table where I struck up a conversation with a man from Bedford

who I had noticed at the breweries I had already visited. He was a serious beer drinker and had three different ales in front of him, plus a smile on his face that said it all. I think it might have been here that I also had the 5.8% Saison Classic. Smooth and dangerous is all I can say about that.

I needed a palate cleanser at this stage so stopped off at Jensen’s Gin where I had the most wonderful G&T and got talking to a group of Scandinavians who had put The Mile on their holiday To-Do List. While biding my time over this cool cocktail, a group from Milton Keynes who were doing The Mile for the third time replaced the Scandinavians, and had this time brought their friend from Stourbridge. One of the group said I should call this a ‘Ginterval’! Genius.

Round the corner at The Bottle Shop I think it was here I had ½ pint of 11% Mud Cake Stout. I asked for a sample taste first and the hint of chocolate lured me in. I had to sit down for this one, as I knew the strong stout could be the one to take me out. It was like velvet chocolate and not for the fainthearted.

I noticed that some local residents had put up makeshift ‘No To Druid Street Market’ signs on the railings opposite.

Not very community spirited, I thought. These were just happy, boisterous people out having a good time with no hint of trouble at any of the places I had visited. And it all ends

at 5pm.

By now I realised my scribbled notes were not making sense and were also impossible to read, so I stopped trying to keep a log. In fact, I’m not even sure if I have transcribed my last notes correctly, so I hope the breweries forgive me for any errors.

I had half pints in the Anspach & Hobday & Bullfinch Brewery,

then the Southwark Brewing Co. before making my way to The Marigold in Bermondsey Street and on to The Gregorian in Jamaica Road to catch up with the two lightweights who had let me down earlier.

The Bermondsey Mile is a superb day out, whether you go for each brewery or just settle for one or two on the list. The arches are our heritage and have for too long been no-go places, but these young entrepreneurs have brought beer-making back and by opening up the arches they have put the area on the world map. I met people from Japan, America, China and all over Europe. Even North Londoners.

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-old Ellie Scotney will be gunning for European gold next month after being selected for the EUBC (European Boxing Confederation) Women’s Junior & Youth Championships.

The Lynn fighter will represent the English ABA in Keszthely, Hungary in a tournament that gets underway on August 15.

The teenage boxing sensation, who has picked up English and GB junior boxing crowns this year, will fight in the under 60kg weight category and her trainer thinks she will be gunning for the top of the podium.

Lynn head coach Samm Mullins said: “I have said it before. This girl is something else. People said the ABA’s would be too much for her after a handful of fights, and she won them, and the same was said before the GB competition which she also won. I am confident she will deliver and I would expect her to medal.

Knowing her as I do she will now focus on the job and she will not want to come away with anything less than the gold medal in Hungary.”

He added: “She went up for a trial as she won the ABA and GB crowns this year and it was a case of one of four girls who would go.

“I was told she smashed it and now she has booked her place going to Hungary.

“I have said I think she is the English Katie Taylor and I meant it.

People are now taking notice of her, the GB squad representatives have been asking where she has been hiding.

“I tell them she wasn’t hiding they weren’t looking.

“She just has to focus now and I know she will and I have every confidence she will deliver. She will want the gold medal and I think she can get it too.”

The Lynn fighter is part of twelve women squad, six juniors and six youth boxers, with Scotney being the English youth representative in the 60kg category.

DULWICH GIRL Jess Campbell has helped set one of the best ever team relay times for female squads crossing the English Channel.

Campbell was part of a Spencer Swim Team who crossed the channel in an impressive 11 hours and 33 minutes.

The time could have been quicker but conditions, including tankers, jellyfish and harsh tides, forced the girls to swim 48km, whilst the quickest route to France from Dover is only 32km.

Speaking about her leg of the trip earlier this month the Dulwich resident said: “I really did throw myself into crashing waves, for my third hour.

“I strongly advise against crying and swimming simultaneously, not least to avoid ingesting salt water.

Hamlet and Fisher pre-season losses

BOTH DULWICH Hamlet and Fisher FC fell to defeat at the weekend as they continue their build to the opening day of the season on August 8.

The Pink and Blues travelled to Whyteleafe on Saturday and lost 4-2 in a contest where Gavin Rose gave a number of trialists a run out.

The Fish lost 5-0 to Ryman Premier League side Tonbridge Angels in the Supporters Direct Shield on the same day.

Hamlet now have two pre-season games left, after the cancellation of the Chipstead game on Tuesday night, starting with Beckenham Town tonight before taking on Hayes & Yeading away from home on Saturday.

Fisher only have tonight’s fixture against Hendon before they play their season opener on Saturday week.

The News will catch up with the managers from both teams next week to get their assessment of their pre-season campaigns and their hopes for the new season.

MORE THAN 100 players contested the 2015 Southwark City Tennis Club championships at Burgess Park last Saturday.

A key theme of the tournament was

the transition of the juniors into the adult events.

Six of the eight semi-finalists in the men’s and women’s events were teenagers with the oldest player being 23.

The men’s event was won by one of the UK’s top under eighteen players,

Lamar Bartley, who defeated Abdul Hassan in the final. Bartley is looking to start his professional tennis career and will be competing in Futures events as he seeks to build up an international rating.

A WASHED out contest against Sussex in Kennington last Friday ultimately put paid to Surrey’s hopes of making it to the knockout section of this year’s Natwest t20 blast competition.

Going into this game Surrey still harboured hopes of making it out of the south group and into the last eight of the tournament.

But rain ended that outside chance of moving on and Surrey will look back on their six losses in fourteen games in a case of what might have been.

They can also point to bad luck as they also had three no results, resulting in shared points, including the abandoned game against Sussex at Arundel where Rory Burns and Moises Henriques were involved in a sickening outfield clash that left the latter with a broken jaw.

compile 343 in their 50 overs and Northants were never in the game when Jade Dernbach took two early wickets with only six runs on the scoreboard.

Wickets regularly fell, with the exception of Ben Duckett who scored 56, and the visitors w e r e bowled out in 24 overs having scored just 123.

More woe for Dulwich CC

DULWICH LOST their fourth game on the bounce at the weekend when they fell to defeat against Cheam Cricket Club (CC).

The Southwark side made 219 when batting first but Cheam reached their target with the loss of just four wickets to register a six wicket victory.

Their latest loss comes on the back of a reverse against leaders Walton on Thames, which was preceded by other defeats against Epsom CC and Esher CC on the two previous weekends. This poor run of form means Dulwich now sit at the bottom of Division Two of the Ryman Surrey Championships.

Defender feared for his Lions stay after Yeovil loan

MANY COULD forgive Byron Webster for thinking his Millwall career was over before it really had a chance to take off.

But the defender felt that was the case after being sent out on loan to Yeovil Town last season, the club the 28-yearold signed from just over a year ago.

Having played 14 games before his exit, Webster felt he hadn't done too bad in the early stages of his Den career, besides the 5-1 home demolishing against Middlesborough.

And Webster admits that that particular game wasn't his finest moment, but is pleased to have been given a chance to prove his worth once more this season.

“If I'm honest, I did think it was over.”

Webster told the News.

“I spoke with my wife and my mum and dad and obviously my agent. If I'm honest, it didn't look too promising.

“I had a very bad game against Middlesbrough last season, but apart from that I don't think I did too bad.

“Last year is gone now and I spoke to the manager over the summer and he wanted me to stay, and that’s the end of it really.

“There was no need to convince me. I have a contract here that I signed last year and I've upheld that.

“Every person in life wants to be wanted and the manager told me he wants me to stay.

“I've got a lot to prove to the fans and to the manager, as much as to myself.”

Since returning to pre-season training, Webster has seen changes from when he was at the club under Ian Holloway.

And the defender is pleased with a

more youthful side being assembled and said the core of senior players remaining at the club are mixing well with the academy graduates.

“It's been good, training has been hard,” Webster explained. “We had a little break in Portugal where the work was harder. We came back and had a few games, so I've enjoyed it.

“It's been quite similar to last season, the training and the running is the same everywhere you go it's going to be tough.

“This year, we've had more games so there's been a lot of practice to implement what we do in training into match situations.

“Every start to a season there is always that buzz.

“You've missed the banter, that starts flowing again and there is a lot of younger lads but, there are also a few that have stayed at the club.

“Tony Craig has come in, but the likes of David Forde, Mark Beevers, Lee Martin, Ed Upson, Shaun Williams and Lee Gregory are all here. The core of the team remains.

“With the blend of youth, there's a lot of enthusiasm and energy around the place.”

Webster expects the Lions to make a bid for promotion, but insists the key to such a goal is consistency.

The 28-year-old was promoted to the Championship with Yeovil Town three seasons ago, and knows what to expect in League One. And Webster also knows what to expect from his centre-half partners, and the defender revealed manager Neil Harris constantly swaps pairings in training to make sure players have the best possible understanding of each other.

“It's the same in any league - it’s just consistency,” Webster said.

“When I was at Yeovil we started the season well, we went six games unbeaten and then lost six games but, after that we kicked on.

“It's about staying consistent, it’s the same in the Championship. The number of teams who stay there or there about and get a run of games together, kick on and make the play-offs or even automatic promotion.

“We're fortunate in training that the manager swaps and changes the partners, whether it be up front or in midfield. I've played with Sid Nelson, Beevers and Craig so we're all fighting for the two defensive shirts.

“Consistently playing in the team, whoever it is, helps. Learning to play with other people in training is going to help when it comes to match situations.”

SATURDAY WASN’T the first time Neil Harris and Teddy Sheringham had been involved in a battle together.

The current Lions boss famously overtook former Den striker, and now Stevenage boss Sheringham as Millwall’s all time leading goalscorer when Harris netted against Crewe in an FA Cup third-round tie back in January 2009.

And the current leading Lions goalscorer got the better of Sheringham once again at the Lamex Stadium, as Millwall ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a Mark Beevers headed goal.

After missing the Bromley and Wimbledon draws, Paris Cowan-Hall, Lee Gregory and Lee Martin all returned from injury as they started for the Lions in the win.

Harris’s men dominated the game against Teddy Sheringham’s side from the first whistle to the last.

The Lions had a plethora of chances throughout proceedings, the earliest coming after just two minutes.

Martin picked up the ball inside his own half and forged forward, and with a sublime cross-field pass the winger found Cowan-Hall in space on the right hand side.

The winger, however, was in two minds when he got into the penalty area, and with a baying John Marquis waiting for the pass, Cowan-Hall under hit the squared ball and it was easily gathered by former Lion Chris Day in the Stevenage goal.

Five minutes before half-time, Shaun Williams had the Lions' best chance of the half.

"There's a fine line between being sensible and going over the top. I'm trying to coach that into the boys at the moment.

"I think we certainly dictated the tempo," Harris said. "The players dictated the pattern of play.

"I think we are fortunate and we feel we have a competitive squad with some real quality in it.

"Against Wimbledon we were the much better team against a much different style of play.”

NEIL HARRIS will utilise the loan market if he deems it necessary.

The Millwall manager is still on the hunt to strengthen his side with nine days to go until the start of the new League One season.

Last week the News reported Harris is still earmarking a striker as a position of priority.

Harris hasn't ruled out permanent additions as the search continues for new signings before the big kick-off on August 8.

And the Den boss has said, if needs be, the loan market will be used to bring in additional players.

“I think I’m quite open to either (loans or permanent signings),” Harris said. “I'm not against the loan system whatsoever, I think if used in the right manor, it can be really productive.

“For me, a loan period is either for us to have the opportunity to have a look at somebody, or it’s to bring a player in for a period of time as

someone else is unavailable - both are win-win situations. I'm not opposed to the loan market.

“I like our players, I like what we have, but if we need to bring in one or two to strengthen for a period of time and give us a chance to look at the bigger picture and have a closer look at other players, then that fits as well.

“We need to be patient to a certain degree, I'm not going to waver on my stance that I’ll only sign players I want to sign. I’m not going to take players just for the sake of taking them, it’s wrong.”

Harris added: “The aim is always to get the players in you want by the Shrewsbury game, that’s the main aim.

“If we could have someone in by C.D Tondela, it would be perfect. As I'm finding out, however, football isn't a perfect business.

“If it means adding to the squad after the first game of the season, or after the first few games because of injury, suspension or I feel we may be lacking something, I’ll certainly be willing to do that.

“We’re working everyday being mindful that we’re looking to bring players in from teams who are in similar situations to us and looking to sign players. We’re at that stage now where I need to speak to clubs and managers.

“I know players might want to come but, if they're not being let go by clubs then it becomes difficult.

“There are targets that we like, we know the characters and abilities and what they offer. We’re just now being patient while waiting for other clubs to get in their targets to let us have their players.

“It’s a waiting game, which is frustrating, but I’m fully appreciative of everybody’s situation.”

EDWARDS BACK ON TRACK AFTER MINOR SET-BACK

CARLOS EDWARDS has trained this week after he missed Millwall’s U21 friendly against Kingstonians with a groin injury.

Edwards has been out for the past eight months with a knee injury, and was penciled in to play some part in last Tuesday’s defeat to the non-league side.

And the defender will continue to be given the chance to prove his fitness in a bid to win a new contract.

“Carlos is still with us,” Harris said.

“He's had a niggling groin injury, it was a little set back before Kingstonians.

“He's done every session of preseason and he's ahead of schedule to where we thought he would be. So we planned for him to get half an hour in the Kingstonians game but, he had a tight groin.

“The decision was made not to play him because he's been out injured for eight months, so why take a risk?

“He has been back in training this week with a view to getting minutes next week in a friendly.

“Then he will have an opportunity to prove his fitness to himself, as well as to us, in order to try and earn a contract.

“It’s a case of him proving fitness to himself as well as us, he's been out a long time, with a nasty injury.

“His desire to get back fit has been phenomenal at his age, he still has the same ability he had before his injury.

“Carlos needs to prove to himself, and to me, that he still has the capability and the pace that he had.

“Once he does that, we will see where it goes from there.”
