SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is ranked 20th out of 123 local authorities in England for the ethnic diversity of its councillors, a new report shows.

The statistics, compiled by Operation Black Vote, show Southwark has eighteen councillors from black and ethnic minority (BAME) backgrounds, from a total of 63 – around 29 per cent, despite the fact Southwark’s total BAME population is 45.7 per cent.

Southwark is trailing behind top performers Brent, Newham and Hounslow, where more than two thirds of councillors are from black and ethnic minority backgrounds, in line with their population.

However, Southwark is above both Lambeth – with just fifteen BAME councillors out of 62; Greenwich, which has only thirteen from an overall total of 51; and Lewisham, coming in 39th.

The report’s authors say the report is a ‘wake-up call’ and recommends all parties put a plan in place to balance what it describes as a democratic deficit.

In Southwark, Labour councillor Evelyn Akoto, originally from Kennington, told the News she was trying to find the next generation of leaders from BAME backgrounds.

She decided to stand for local election when she was living on the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth. Despite its large black and ethnic minority population, the area’s three local councillors were all white.

“I didn’t see diversity there, but realised that rather than complaining about it, it was up to me to put myself forward,” she says, ultimately encouraged by the fact other black women had also become councillors.

A MAN in his fifties has died after being ‘found unresponsive in the swimming pool’ at Rotherhithe’s Seven Islands leisure centre on Tuesday evening.

The emergency services rushed to the leisure centre on Lower Road shortly after six in the evening on Tuesday where they found the unresponsive man.

Cllr Akoto secured the support of her colleagues and was elected in 2014 to represent her Old Kent Road ward and become a full-time cabinet member, with responsibility for community safety and public health.

“I get people who talk to me who do not want to talk to anyone else, people can relate to me because I’m from their community and have lived in Southwark all my life.

“There is a lack of role models for young people from BAME backgrounds. They don’t see themselves in politics and in the judicial system, so they think it’s not for them.

“We have to change that and the answer is mentorship.

“I am reaching out and trying to finding the outstanding people, the next generation, and encourage them to put themselves forward. We need to be active in this.”

“A lot of BAME women especially come to me and in an area with two other councillors who are male, women are often more likely to speak to me about certain things.

“Diversity in political representation is so, so important, I can’t emphasise that enough. Without BAME people’s views we at the council are missing the mark,” she says.

WHEN KEEPING bees, most would wear a protective suit. But one Bermondsey-based student has taken to keeping them in just his birthday suit.

Naked bee-keeper George Lodge, 23, of Bermondsey Street, often forgoes the hot and heavy bee-keeper’s outfit for nothing but his bare skin.

It started off as a bet with a mate – but he soon turned his naked bee-keeping talents into a charity calendar, in a bid to help a bee-keeper he met in Zanzibar come to the UK for research.

“The first time was about five years

ago,” said George, who first started keeping bees with his mother when he was about ten or eleven.

“He said, ‘I bet you can’t do it without your top on’. And eventually we said ‘I bet you can’t do it naked.’

“One of our mutual friends was with us in a full suit and we were there in just our pants, but this hive was quite angry so we got a few stings.”

Despite the stings, the fifth-year medical student was not put off keeping bees in the nude – and even posed for a naked charity calendar.

While in Zanzibar, he met bee-keeper Khamis Dadi Khamis on a bee-keeping social enterprise, and hit upon the idea of bringing him to England on a research

trip. The idea was for Khamis to come to England to observe bee-keeping techniques, and take back those which may work in Zanzibar, George explained.

To raise the money, George, who works part time for the Bermondsey Street Bees business, managed to sell the naked calendar to different parts of the world over the past year, alongside little pots of honey. But despite achieving sales as far afield as America, it was not warmly received by all, he says.

“One lady brought a calendar for her ‘secret Santa’ and her secret Santa was Old Bob – and she sent me a picture of him looking very unimpressed!” he told the News.

Some family members even paid him £20 explicitly not to receive a calendar full of his poses with the bees.

The zany approach would not have surprised them too much though, George said. “Some of my mates thought I was even more stupid than they already thought. But I think people are quite used to me, so I don’t think they were too surprised.”

In fact, there may even be another naked calendar on the way – with a few extra naked bee-keepers thrown in for good measure.

“I’m starting a new one,” said George, “but I’m hoping some of the bee-keepers who bought one last time might take part.”

“IT HAS shaken my faith in democracy,” says an exasperated Lordship Lane business owner left reeling after the council refused to abandon its CPZ plans in the face of overwhelming opposition.

Michael Donovan, managing director of Roullier White, at 125 Lordship Lane, said he was shocked to hear that Southwark Council was now proposing to put a controlled parking zone into roughly half of the shopping thoroughfare.

The new plan is a U-turn given Cllr Richard Livingstone’s past commitment that any changes were unlikely to come into force without majority backing.

“We don’t want to this to be like Brexit, and be antagonising the people we live with who are in favour, but we do want people to know what is happening,” Mr Donovan told the News.

Councillor Livingstone, the cabinet member responsible for transport and the environment, said the amended plans for East Dulwich were based on a CPZ in Melbourne Grove, where 54 per cent of residents living near the train station were in favour, running from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Saturday.

He said in West Peckham, only ‘a minority’ of respondents objected to a CPZ, with 58% in favour when asked for their view if a zone was also implemented in a neighbouring road.

“Further to this, any proposed CPZ still has to be advertised and is subject to the statutory objection process, which will again give people the opportunity to share their views about any of the proposals,” he said.

The council’s East Dulwich CPZ consultation received more than 2,000 resident responses - 37 per cent of all people eligible. Sixty-nine per cent were against, 25 per cent were in favour, and six per cent were undecided. When it came to businesses, an overwhelming majority was against the move – with 91 per cent against a CPZ.

CPZ’S EN ROUTE DESPITE 69% AGAINST IT

Mr Donovan claimed the understandable concerns of residents frustrated by commuters taking up road space by the station were being used as an excuse to steamroller the plans through.

He said traders would support a small CPZ to cover the area by the station, but were concerned a larger zone would lead to parking chaos elsewhere, and an inevitable roll-out across the borough.

In February, Southwark Council’s finance chief, Cllr Victoria Mills, told the News that consultations in Lordship Lane and West Peckham were only being held at the request of residents - and were not part of an internal agenda.

She also denied that the possible zones were being included in their budget – but couldn’t confirm this would stay the case.

As the News has reported, Southwark has lost £8.6 million of funding from central government for the next financial year, and is left with an overall shortfall of nearly £20 million it needs to fill to balance its books. Plans to close the gap include collecting nearly £5 million from ‘fees and charges’.

Now the borough has committed to go carbon neutral two decades earlier than planned after declaring a ‘climate emergency’, many are left wondering whether CPZs are becoming inevitable.

A petition against the CPZ set up by The East Dulwich Independent Business Association, with more than 100 members, gained 10,000 signatures in four weeks.

“Lordship Lane’s businesses are really flying in the face of the death of the high street but this will destroy our high street.

It will crush us,” Mr Donovan said.

“We are all very proud of what has been achieved here. I have lived here 30 years and remember what it was like when one in three shops were boarded up.

“If democracy is the will of the people, this has completely shaken my faith in local government.”

Many traders pay around £24,000 in business rates each year, and need to take double that figure just to pay up – before factoring in staff costs and rent.

“A ten per cent loss in footfall, for example, would close businesses – I think we would fall like dominos,” he says.

And he doesn’t hold much truck with the argument shoppers will switch to public transport or walking.

Roughly half the petition signatories came from outside the immediate area, including Sydenham, Lewisham, Kent and further afield – often with poor direct transport links.

After a public meeting was held on Saturday, where residents shared their views on the latest proposals, traders are now waiting to hear whether the council will continue full steam ahead – or concede defeat.

Mr Donovan, and many others, will be holding their breath: “Richard Livingstone said they wouldn’t proceed with the CPZ if there was a groundswell against it.

“Well this is apparently the largest turnout the borough has ever seen.

They’ve manipulated the figures – it’s absolutely shocking.

“Sixty-eight to 25 per cent is an enormous surge. But now they’re changing their tune because they didn’t get what they want.”

AN 89-YEAR-OLD greatgrandfather will abseil 160 feet down the front of St Thomas’ hospital next week to raise money for charity.

Daredevil Frank Clark, who lives in the borough, is taking on the hairraising challenge for Guy’s and St Thomas’ on Friday, May 10, having been treated at both hospitals in his life.

In 1944, aged just 14, Frank contracted tuberculosis and spent two-and-a-half years at Guy’s recovering from the potentially fatal illness. He said: “Back then, a lot of people died of TB. I was in the hospital for two and a half years, but I was one of the lucky ones.

“They looked after me all those years ago and I’m still under their care now.”

Now the grandfather to four and great-grandfat-her to six is taking on the adrenaline-fuelled challenge to thank the doctors and nurses who’ve looked after him over 74 years.

“I’ve been coming here for so long now and the doctors and nurses are all great,” he said.

“They don’t keep you waiting, they keep me informed and I’m able to have a bit of a laugh with them too.”

Age is no barrier for the adrenaline junkie, who first began his daredevil adventures after seeing one of his grandchildren skydiving.

“I live for today. Anything going, I’ll do it,” he said.

“Whenever there’s a do I’m the

first one on the dancefloor and usually the last one to leave! You only have one life, so you might as well live it.”

Last year the 89-year-old completed a 100-foot high zip-line over the South Bank – and is already planning on doing a walk on the wing of plane.

He said: “I want to do a wing walk – where you’re strapped to the wing of a plane in flight. That’s the next thing to tick off the bucket list.”

Frank’s daughter, Rita Kearney, says she hasn’t inherited her dad’s daredevil spirit, but that she’s proud of him.

She said: “I think it’s amazing what he’s doing. He’s so independent and I never have to worry about him.”

When not engaging in daring challenges, Frank also runs a social club for retired men at Blackfriars Settlement, a charity. He set it up after realising there was nothing to do for older men he says.

They play darts, cards, table tennis and dominos – “anything the members want to do I try and sort out,” says Frank.

Dr Eui-Sik Suh, consultant respiratory physician at Lane Fox Respiratory Service, where Frank is a patient, said he was “hugely grateful” to Frank for raising money for the hospital.

THE COUNCIL has won a £1.1million proceeds of crime order against an ‘unscrupulous’ landlord who divided three London Bridge flats into around 'twenty cramped bedsits'.

Landlord Andre Charles Trepel was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £35,000 costs at Inner London Crown Court on April 17, for breaching a planning enforcement notice, while his company No1 (London) Ltd was fined £1,000.

Trepel and his company have also been ordered to pay back £1,118,601 of his profits within three months, or face a seven-year prison sentence.

The council originally won a planning prosecution against Mr Trepel, of Trinec in the Czech Republic, for his illegal conversion of the flats at 4-6 London Bridge Street in 2010.

The 74-year-old was fined and ordered to return the flats to their original condition.

Despite that, visits from council inspectors in 2015 and 2016 revealed little had been done to comply with the order – and further charges were brought in 2017.

The landlord was again found guilty, but sentencing was deferred until an investigation could reveal how much profit he had made from renting out the 'illegally-divided properties'.

Trepel would have earned £1.2million in gross rent from the London Bridge Street properties since 2011, it was found.

“This council will not stand by and let our residents live in cramped properties that are harmful to their health and happiness, and we will

use every legal measure at our disposal to ensure homes are of a decent standard and landlords do not profit from the misery of their tenants,” she said.

Under Proceeds of Crime Act rules, most of the money will go to the government.

However, the council will get around £445,000 of the criminal benefit to re-invest in enforcement and crime reduction initiatives.

Town hall officials said they have restrained assets belonging to Mr Trepel and his company to ensure the confiscation orders will be satisfied.

SIX STATUES representing historic stages of the slave trade are looking for a new home in Southwark after being on temporary display in Southwark Council’s Tooley Street HQ.

Artist Sokari Douglas, who was born and brought up in west Africa before moving to Southwark thirty years ago, says she hopes the statues can find a permanent home in the borough.

“As a resident of this borough, I feel very strongly that the memory of a life lived should not be forgotten,” she explained.

“I would like to thank Southwark Council and particularly my friend Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle for encouraging me to display them here in the first place.

“I now hope I can find a permanent home for the sculptures, preferably within the borough.”

The council’s cabinet member for culture, Cllr Rebecca Lury, said visitors to Tooley Street and council staff had given the display a positive reaction.

“We have loved having them in our foyer and hope that in their new home, they will be equally well received,” she said.

Coming to the Blue

TRADERS AT Bermondsey’s Blue Market could soon begin using cargo bikes to move goods under a clean air project with TfL.

The marketplace has been awarded a slice of £170,000 funding by the transport quango, which will go towards a cycle-friendly scheme including shared cargo bikes and bike storage for traders.

The move comes after organisations around London Bridge, including Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust, have also turned to cargo bikes in a bid to beat the new ULEZ charges.

One of the businesses at the marketplace taking part in the cargo bike scheme is Bell and Sons butchers.

Keen cyclist Simon Bell, who is also

director of Blue Bermondsey BID, said: “We're really keen to test out the new full size shared cargo bikes, which are planned to be trialled for businesses at the Blue using this new funding from TFL. “I've already seen the new electric cargo bikes in Bermondsey Street and they look great. I hope many other local businesses will join the trial too."

Jack Shah, chair of Blue Bermondsey BID, said the funding was “fantastic news” for market traders.

“Longer term, there is a huge opportunity for new cycle routes at the Blue which could link up along the Low Line with other areas such as London Bridge and Bankside,” he said.

“Business cargo bikes could use these routes for last mile zero emissions deliveries during weekday daytimes, to help reduce air pollution for our local communities.”

THE COUNCIL has won a magistrates’ court appeal from a Bermondsey beer mile brewery over licensing hours – which a barrister warns could have implications for future applications by other nearby businesses.

In October, licensing sub-committee councillors had refused an application by the Southwark Brewing Company on Druid Street to serve alcohol until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, plus twenty minutes’ ‘drinking up time’.

Under council licensing rules, businesses in residential areas are only normally allowed to serve alcohol until 11pm, which the company is allowed to do.

The business appealed the decision,

arguing the application was dismissed out of hand because the variation was outside of the policy hours without regarding the case on its merits.

However, sitting at Camberwell Green on April 12, District Judge Susan Holdham dismissed the appeal and sided with the council, ordering the business to pay Southwark’s costs.

While not binding for future cases, the ruling “may also lead to a curtailing of future applications in the Bermondsey Beer Mile, particularly those that go beyond Policy Framework Hours,” warned licensing barrister Gary Grant, who was instructed by the council for the case.

In her ruling, District Judge Holdham said the problem was the cumulative impact of businesses with licences in the area. Seventeen businesses within 100m also had alcohol licences of varying

times she said.

“I have considered afresh the evidence and indeed I have heard evidence the Licensing Sub-Committee did not hear,” she said.

“I conclude that the application for the variation in the licence should not be granted and that the Licensing SubCommittee were correct when they came to the same conclusion.”

She said she had dismissed the application primarily to prevent more noise and disruption, particularly for residents of the nearby St John’s Estate, just off Tower Bridge Road.

The judge added in her ruling that the decision did not reflect upon the business owner or the way the business was run.

The Southwark Brewing Company was contacted for comment but did not respond before the News went to press.

A WOMAN whose unborn baby was stillborn after she suffered a horrific physical assault is holding a special day-long event to bring together and support young women who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or neonatal deaths.

Twenty-five-year-old Malorie Bantala, grew up in Peckham and has lived in Southwark for most of her life. At 21 she suffered a stillbirth after being violently assaulted while eight months pregnant.

The traumatic experience led her to set up OWNIT.org, a reproductive health organisation, and campaign for women’s reproductive rights.

On May 25, she is holding a specialist workshop with life coach Sai Jurji, called Surviving the New ‘Normal’, at Canada Water Library, for women under 30 who have lost a baby.

She hopes the session, which has eleven places, will give support and also help women meet others with similar experiences.

Malorie says: “For me the experience was lonely and isolating. The reality is most people at that age are concerned about superficial things and are not emotionally equipped to handle such a tragedy. I know I wasn’t alone, but I remembered how the experience made me feel. All I wanted was to meet other people my age who could relate to my experience but I couldn’t find a safe space.

“My aim is to help women learn how to manage their grief in a healthy way – also they will have a unique experience of meeting women of their age group whom they are able to relate to.

“I’ve purposely decided to keep the numbers small and intimate because I just want women to feel comfortable about opening up as it’s a sensitive subject.”

She told the News although she was offered NHS support after her ordeal, it didn’t work for her, and more can be done

to help women dealing with child loss.

“At the time I was referred to victim support and received counselling provided by the NHS. “Yet, at the time I didn't feel that they could provide me with the adequate support that I needed.

“My circumstances were complex and support services are trained to deal with so much. I wouldn't discredit the work that they do, however, it just wasn't for me,” she said.

She is particularly focused on helping women learn more and take control of their reproductive health, saying information about this area isn’t always available.

Key to stopping more women going through what she did, she says, is raising awareness of reproductive coercion.

“Recently, there was a report published

by British Medical Journal on reproductive coercion, a form of domestic abuse It describes a type of abuse in which someone else controls your reproductive choices, for instance deciding whether you can use contraception, choose to become pregnant, or continue with a pregnancy.

“This form of abuse is more common that we think. Young women and women from ethnic backgrounds are most vulnerable to this abuse.

THE NUMBER of emergency food parcels given out by food banks in Southwark has increased by a third in a year as the switch to Universal Credit continues to bite.

New figures published by the Trussell Trust show the number of three-day food supplies given out between April 2018 and March 2019 leapt by 34 per cent in twelve months, to 5,649. This included just under 2,000 parcels for children.

Peckham-based foodbank Pecan’s chief executive says around eighty per cent of people using the service for the first time are in their dire situation due to Universal Credit.

Southwark was one of the first local authority boroughs to trial Universal Credit three years ago.

Since then, the council’s data shows that people who moved onto the system in 2016 saw their rent arrears increase by, on average, £586.

The Trussell Trust’s chief executive Emma Revie said: “What we are seeing year-upon-year is more and more people struggling to eat because they simply cannot afford food. This is not right.

“Enough is enough. We know this situation can be fixed – that’s why we’re campaigning to create a future where no one needs a food bank.

“Our benefits system is supposed to protect us all from being swept into poverty. Universal Credit should be part of the solution but currently the five week wait is leaving many without enough money to cover the basics.”

Her comments were echoed by councillor Evelyn Akoto, Southwark’s cabinet member for community safety and public health, who said the local authority was in the process of developing new plans to deal with the growing problem of food poverty.

“It is disgraceful that, under this Conservative government, the number of people who are forced to turn to foodbanks for emergency support continues to rise,” she told the News.

“The roll out of Universal Credit has only made this problem worse, with delays in payments pushing people into hardship.

FareShare helping those alone

A FOOD charity based in south London is looking for charities and community groups tackling loneliness that could benefit from fresh, indate but unwanted food.

FareShare London, a partnership between the British Red Cross and Coop, based in Deptford, says it wants to help 400 charities focused on helping people overcome loneliness and isolation.

Last year, it helped feed nearly 35,000 people every week and, in the process, saved nearly 800 tonnes of food from being wasted.

The charity says loneliness is particularly prevalent among older people, and is linked to a range of psychological and physical health problems including heart disease, strokes and Alzheimer’s.

But many people are unaware that other groups can also be adversely affected by feeling alone and isolated, including new mums, people with mobility or health issues, those recently divorced or bereaved and parents’ whose children have flown the nest.

The Department for Work and Pensions, however, has disputed the link between rising food bank use and the benefits changes.

“It is not true to say that people need to wait five weeks for their first payment.

Universal Credit is available to claimants on day one,” a spokesperson said.

“It also cannot be claimed that Universal Credit is driving the overall use of food banks or that benefit changes and delays are driving growth.

“The trust’s own analysis shows a

substantial fall in the share of parcels being issued due to benefit payment delays.

“The best route out of poverty is to help people into sustainable employment which, with record employment, we are doing.

“For those who need a safety net we have invested £10 billion into Universal Credit since 2016 alone, confirmed the benefits freeze will end next year and made changes to make Universal Credit fairer for women and families.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Pecan will launch its latest initiative to tackle the growing crisis; Peckham Pantry.

For a weekly fee of £4.50, members are able to choose between fifteen to twenty pounds worth of food and household goods including fresh fruit, vegetables and meat.

Climate change needs action now!

W E’RE ALL hearing about the catastrophic effects of global warming and doing what we can to recycle, use reusable bags and coffee cups and worrying about supermarkets using so much plastic packaging.

Last month, Southwark became one of the first councils to declare a Climate Change Emergency and commit to combating greenhouse gas emissions and rising global temperatures. The council has already worked to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 37% since 2010. And aims to achieve carbon neutrality in the borough by 2030, which means to remove as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as we put in to it.

But while we step up our own efforts locally, what is really urgent now is that the Government must take decisive action.

Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old Swedish activist who is leading the charge on climate change around the

world, visited Parliament and challenged all of us as MPs last week: “I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if our house is on fire.

Because it is.”

And she’s right. Climate change is not a theoretical future. It is already here wildfires, droughts and floods are hitting people around the world – and disproportionately hurting poorer communities in Africa, Asia and Far East.

The science is clear, we must act now to have any hope of reversing global warming. This cannot wait. It is for today’s governments.

This message has hit home to the thousands of school students and Extinction Rebellion protesters who, inspired by Greta, have demonstrated in recent weeks. Their message is that the Government must do much more to reduce the carbon dioxide we are releasing into the atmosphere.

Greta Thunberg has shown and to the thousands of people protesting and writing to their MPs, the Government should set clear, measurable targets to move away from harmful energy sources like burning coal and gas. And use tax breaks to make clean energy more affordable for people to use, like onshore wind farms, solar panels and electric cars.

Labour are taking this forward in Parliament this week by bringing forward a motion to make our Parliament the first in the world formally to recognise the climate emergency. I am backing this.

“In Nunhead I've never seen so many cats wondering the streets … killing our

HIS WEEK, we report on the impact that the life-saving drug, Orkambi could have for Millwall fans affected by Cystic Fibrosis (CF). The hereditary condition, affecting around 10,000 people, means sufferers’ lungs produce thick mucus, leaving them susceptible to lung infections.

Sadly, it causes shortened life expectancy and there is no cure. However, there are treatments which can dramatically improve lung function for very many people who have CF. Among them is Orkambi, made by Vertex.

One Millwall-season ticket holder who spoke to this paper has two sons suffering from CF. His 13-yearold, Jack, is taking Kalydeco, a predecessor drug to Orkambi, also made by Vertex.

The drug does not help all those suffering from CF – it is effective for around five per cent of patients who carry a certain mutation.

But it has helped Jack. Almost instantly his lung function improved. He has not been to hospital since it was made available to him on the NHS in 2013.

His dad Nick was so overcome with emotion when it was revealed that Kalydeco would be made available, he burst into tears.

He says he desperately wants the same for other families who need vital life-saving CF treatments such as Orkambi.

The drug, a combination of Kalydeco and Lumacaftor, would be effective for a far larger group of those suffering from CF. Those who would not be helped by the medicine, such as Craig Jones, who has CF, also call for it. The ambulance service officer, who regularly attends Millwall games, manages his condition well.

“I have always had CF, but it has never had me and I intend to keep it that way for a long time,” he says.

He has largely managed to avoid hospital admissions – and wants the same for others.

Yet inexplicably, Orkambi is not routinely available on the English NHS on cost grounds.

A bitter war-of-words has played out over the past three years surrounding the drug’s price.

NHS England and NICE – which approves the use of new medicines on the health service – have previously accused Vertex of being inflexible.

Vertex hit back accusing health service bosses of outrageous behaviour.

This blame game helps nobody, least of all children like Finley who may benefit from this revolutionary treatment.

Readers of this paper will know Finley takes his Cystic Fibrosis in his stride, with considerable bravery.

Despite having to take a diet of forty pills a day and multiple daily physio sessions to dislodge mucus from his lungs he stays fit and active. He even captains his football team.

Yet the Millwall-mad eight-year-old, whose favourite player is Jed Wallace, spent a month in hospital with lung infections recently.

He may not have had to do so if Orkambi were made available to him, says doting dad, Wayne.

To parents whose children have CF, or those affected by it directly, it does not matter who is responsible for the hold-up in getting Orkambi rolled out on the English NHS. It matters only that there is a hold-up.

Talks will be ongoing. But every day that passes is a day that thousands of children do not have access to a potentially life-changing drug. That is simply a scandal.

As David Ramsden, the chief executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust rightly says, this tragic situation must end.

Global bike ride attempt rocked by bike theft

A MAN who is attempting to cycle around the world has been delivered a serious setback after his bike was stolen on Borough High Street.

Josh Quigley had been staying at the St Christopher’s hostel when his “priceless” bike was stolen from a rack outside the nearby Costa on Easter Sunday.

He had not been allowed to take the bike inside the hostel.

The cyclist, originally from Edinburgh, had been enjoying a day’s break in his sixth attempt to cycle around the world, visiting 60 countries and six continents.

However, after he publicised the news of his bike’s theft, kindhearted fans and strangers rallied around – and have raised £2,500 for a new bike to carry him on the first leg of his worldwide journey.

He told the News: “The bike was priceless. That bike put me on such an amazing journey when I was in a bad place.

“If a few days before the bike was stolen someone had offered me a million quid for it, I would not have sold it.”

The 26-year-old credits cycling with saving him from dark times after falling into depression in 2015 – and surviving a suicide bid.

A DAMNING report has alleged that Everton fans threatened an away coach driver and tricked another into thinking they were ill prior to the outbreak of serious violence at the Millwall FA cup game in January.

The report criticised Huyton Mini Coaches for how it handled away fans at the Millwall match, despite the company ferrying Everton fans to away games for several seasons.

In evidence heard from a police officer attached to Everton, one coachload of fans “took part in the most serious football violence (he had) seen in 28 years of policing,” on January 26.

If the away coach “had adhered to the instructions, it is my belief that the violence would not have been as serious as it was,” PC Michael Dacre, of Merseyside Police, told the traffic commissioner of the North West of England, Simon Evans.

Coaches had been given a set route and stops were forbidden before arriving at the Millwall game, as police had raised concern about violence if home and away fans came close to each other.

Coach driver, Mr Szilagy, was reportedly tricked by Everton fans into thinking a passenger was suffering from a medical emergency – and the fans then independently met up with other supporters and travelled across London.

A second coach also breached its instructions, stopping at a pub in Luton, the report found, allegedly arriving late to the game. The coach was then involved in a “violent incident” with Millwall fans.

“Windows were broken and damage was caused to the vehicle,” found the traffic commissioner’s report.

“Occupants of the coach were seen throwing bottles and cans and were said to be ‘winding up’ those outside, leading to serious disorder problems.”

The ‘catalogue of failings’ meant the risk to the public was increased, the report found.

The commissioner declined to find the coach operator had lost its repute – but said it should be “seriously embarrassed.”

However, it ordered Huyton Mini Coaches lose its licence as a result of its financial standing.

The News has contacted Huyton for comment about its licence.

As this paper has reported, the outbreak of football violence - dubbed the most serious seen in the capital for many years - led to a large outbreak of violence near to Surrey Quays station (pictured right).

Whelan’s Pub, on Rotherhithe Old Road, was trashed during the melee, as was a charity shop on Southwark Park Road in a separate outbreak of disorder.

Wellwishers club together to raise £2,500 to replace ‘Braveheart’ bike

The bike – named Braveheart – also helped him deal with the death of his father, who passed away from leukaemia last year.

However, the cyclist does not hold a grudge against the person who took the bike, telling the News that he hopes it brings them as much happiness as it has brought him.

“I wouldn’t say anything to them,” Josh said. “I would just ask them if they were OK. You have to be in a desperate position to steal a bike.”

The thief will also not thwart his sixth attempt to travel the globe, he said.

“It’s such a big scary thing. At the end of the day it’s just me and the road,” he told the News – but this time he is determined to overcome the fear and finish the trip.

Tragic death in Peckham blaze

A WOMAN in her 50s has died after a fire in a first-floor Peckham flat last Friday.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the home in Dalwood Street at fivepast-seven on Friday, April 26.

Four engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze until it was brought under control by 8.43am.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus managed to find a woman and bring her outside. Despite the efforts of paramedics, including those from London’s Air Ambulance, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire, which has damaged part of the first floor, is now being investigated.

MILLWALL FANS DEMAND END TO WONDER DRUG STAND-OFF

MILLWALL FANS affected by Cystic Fibrosis are calling for the wonder-drug Orkambi to be urgently made available on the NHS, as a stand-off over the price continues.

The drug could dramatically improve lung function for many sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic condition which causes a build-up of thick mucus on the lungs, shortening life expectancy.

Although Orkambi is available in other European countries, it is not prescribed on the NHS in England, amid a longstanding row between the health service, NICE and pharmaceutical company, Vertex, over its price.

Millwall fan, Wayne Shoults, is among those calling for the drug to be made available immediately, saying his son, Finley, eight, might have avoided a

recent month-long hospital stay if it were.

In message to the all sides, he said: “Stop messing around, stop the bickering, and just get on with it.

“It’s just such a shame there’s a drug [to help some people with Cystic Fibrosis] and people are arguing over X, Y, Z. “In the long run, what we pay for this drug will be outweighed by less hospital stays and fewer other drugs he has to take.”

At the moment, little Finley has to take forty tablets a day and do two daily physio sessions to dislodge mucus from his lungs and prevent infections.

After seeing coverage of Finley in the News, his classmates are planning to write to Prime Minister Theresa May to ask why Orkambi is not available to people like him, said Wayne.

Millwall season ticket-holder, Nick Callaghan, has two sons with CF, Jack, aged 13 and older brother, Harvey.

Orkambi, called Kalydeco, also made by Vertex. It has led to miraculous and unexpected results, says Nick.

“Jack’s lung function improved by 15 per cent almost instantly and a weight gain of around 2kg was achieved within a month,” he said.

“Jack’s lung function has not declined since taking Kalydeco and he has not experienced any admissions to hospital.”

Kalydeco is an effective treatment for an estimated five per cent of UK patients carrying a certain mutation, whereas Orkambi would be effective for a much larger proportion of those with CF. When Kalydeco was made available for around 270 patients on NHS in January 2013, including Jack, dad Nick was overcome with emotion.

“I had to leave the office without announcement, got in my car and wept tears of joy,” he said.

“I desperately want Orkambi to be made available so that thousands of families can feel the joy we did and sustain the health of their loved ones.”

Craig Jones, 34, was diagnosed with

Cystic Fibrosis at three weeks old and has been a Millwall fan since he was nine-years-old.

He does not qualify for Orkambi, but says it would improve the lives of thousands of men, women and children.

“The problem with getting this drug in the UK is all down to the NHS negotiating with Vertex and there doesn’t seem to be any agreement being made from this and it’s putting people’s lives at risk,” he said.

“What needs to be done is for Orkambi to be made more affordable and also for the NHS to be stronger in their negotiations as it does feel like neither are compromising on cost and this is impacting so many lives right now.”

David Ramsden, chief executive of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust charity, echoed Craig’s call, saying: “All three parties – NICE, NHS England and Vertex - must reach a compromise and end the agonising three year wait for this these life-saving medicines.

“Each day that passes without a deal means the risk of more damage to the

lives and prospects of thousands of children and adults with cystic fibrosis across the UK. “This tragic situation must end. No more excuses, we need action now.”

The war-of-words over the confidential pricing talks has previously seen NHS England officials accuse the pharmaceutical company of being “extreme outliers” in its pricing and behaviour in evidence to MPs. However, Dr Jeff Leiden, Vertex CEO, rebutted the claim last month at a hearing of the Health and Social Care Committee, saying Vertex’s first priority was to get patients access to the drugs.

A Vertex spokesperson said it was unable to comment further as it is in ongoing discussions with the health authorities. A committee meeting will be held mid-next week to discuss the drug and ongoing talks, a NICE spokesperson told the News.

A parliamentary petition for the drug to be on the NHS in England hit 100,000 signatures last month, meaning it must be debated by MPs in the Commons.

Baker Radio presenter, TV host, journalist and pub DJ, Danny Baker has done it all.

Michael Holland caught up with the entertainer as he travels the UK with new tour Good Time Charlie’s Back

A

ll locals who have their roots in Bermondsey will know Danny Baker. Some of us will have gone to school with him, some of us will have grown up on the Silwood Estate with him, others will have known him from his DJing days in local pubs or via his diverse career that has taken in journalism, TV presenting, and a wide-ranging radio presence that has included playing records at one end of the spectrum and sport at the other, with an array of broadcasting paraphernalia in between that made him unmissable.

Not everyone ‘got’ Baker but still had to listen because he was nothing like anyone else.

For me his most memorable moment was on BBC London when, just as he went on air the day after he won an award for radio, he was told his show was being cut. What followed was the best three hours of radio I can remember as he relentlessly tore into his BBC bosses.

One aspect of Danny’s life that not everyone is aware of is his prolific

writing. After a few weeks on the reception desk at the New Musical Express offices he was writing articles for the paper. Soon after he found himself in New York interviewing John Lennon! It is episodes like that which have formed his life: right place, right time, with nothing planned out for the future.

He definitely didn’t factor in the cancer that took him away from the spotlight for a while, but we, united as one, gave an all-embracing sigh of relief when he got the all clear after treatment. Post-cancer he wrote three volumes of autobiography, the first of which became Cradle to the Grave, a six-part sitcom that gained him fans who were not aware of his earlier work.

Two years ago, however, Danny revealed to all his Twitter followers that he would retire at 60. I for one didn’t believe it; he seemed to be having so much fun that it couldn’t even be counted as ‘work’. Since that ‘retirement’ he has toured the UK with his successful one man show, Cradle to the Stage, that took his books out into the theatre, and has also teamed up with Gary

boy Lineker to create a twin striker partnership for their podcast, Behind Closed Doors.

Now there is a new tour - Good Time Charlie’s Back - and was surprised to hear that he had no plans for ever doing something like this: ‘I was trying to retire so we could go out to Portugal and live on the beach,’ he begins before telling me how he wanted to finish off by ‘getting a few quid from doing “I’m A Celebrity…”

I only wanted to do one Cradle to the Stage show but that became 5, then 10, 20, 40, 60 shows, from Cumbria down to the Isle of Wight… The audiences loved it, I loved it, but my wife was drumming her fingers and asking when we were buggering off to Portugal.’ However, the theatre bug had bitten so this second tour, with another 60 dates booked, will fill in the gaps left gaping from the first tour. ‘And there will probably be a third,’ he hints.

When touring, Danny spaces the dates and venues so that he can get back home to his beloved family regularly. ‘There’s just me in a van with a driver named Giles,’ he says.

‘He picks me up, takes me to the gig,

then we stay in a good hotel, have a bottle of wine, sleep, have breakfast and get on the road to the next one.’

Each show is played pretty much off the cuff, although Danny has some specific tried and tested stories that he always uses. He recounted one favourite of being shot with an air gun - twice - in Bermondsey by West Ham fans. I’ve read it in his book but hearing it ‘live’ is even more hilarious. He uses photos to get the anecdotes rolling and although he has over 40 images to hand, he has never used more than 8 in a show. He knows what works and has become adept at timing his performances so they don’t run over after he saw twothirds of his Bromley audience leave

- mid story - towards the end: ‘The car park closes in a minute, shouted one to a bemused Mr Baker.

His shows are relatable to anyone anywhere. ‘They are working class stories which are very familiar to anyone who lived and went to school in places like us,’ he tells me while explaining why the performances are appreciated - and sold out - all over the UK. The touring shows allow him to be himself without the restrictions of broadcasting regulations, and I sense that he feels that this is a real highlight in his eclectic career. He has no producer in his earpiece telling him to cut, finish, or stop a certain line of thought. Here the leash is off.

It is like his whole life was meant to

lead to this.

‘Gary Lineker rung me up and left a load of messages on my phone that I came home from holiday to; the final unanswered message saying, “I suppose that’s a no, then!” I didn’t know what he was talking about.’

Checking through he found that he was being asked to do a podcast with the Match of the Day man. ‘I’d never wanted to do a podcast before as there’s no money in them, apparently, but it went straight to Number One in the podcast charts!’ The deadly duo have now taken their show on the road with a couple of gigs booked, ‘and that’s gonna turn into a tour, I suspect,’ adds Danny. ‘So Wendy’s still saying, “When are we going to live on a beach?”’

Millwall’s most famous fan had to tell his wife, ‘I don’t know,’ and readily admits, the podcast was ‘like everything else in my life over the last 40 odd years, something I never knew was coming round the corner.’

I asked about a next book. ‘Yes, Going Round the Houses will be all the stories I never told in the other ones… I might be sitting round a table talking and think, “Ooh, I’ve not

done that story”, and make a note to put it in.’

Another surprise success was the children’s book Danny wrote, Lucie Goose, which has done well in all the English-speaking countries, like the autobiographies, but remarkably well in ‘Germany, Finland and Italy… If China buy it,’ he jokes, ‘I’m gonna buy a solid gold house on a hill!’

For now, though, the tour and podcast is stopping the Bakers going off to live by the sea - The move that Danny calls his ‘Third and Final Act’.

He reveals he finds it difficult when ‘people keep saying to me, “Come and have a go at this.” So what do you do? Every time I think I’m going to pull up the stumps and say “That’ll do” something else comes up’.

Jack the PR man gave a one minute warning so I asked for some last words. ‘There will be another children’s book; Cradle to the Grave will return and Good Time Charlie’s Back will continue to visit towns around Britain.’

Marathon 2019 stories

Everyone Active manager James Tierney was running the marathon to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation after he lost both an aunt and uncle to lung cancer He raised £1,105 and completed the marathon in a very impressive 3:33:27.

Before running he told the News the amazing crowds would help him to post a very impressive time – and training in his local gym.

This was Fiona’s first marathon, after “topping her tan at mile nineteen last year”.

The 34-year-old from East Dulwich was raising funds for Diabetes UK to try to help find a cure, after four people in her family had been affected

by Type 1 or 2.

On the day, ten people were supporting her in the crowd, but she only managed to spot her mum.

She said the best bit was Embankment, and the worst part was at mile eighteen, as Canary Wharf is particularity hard - and someone ran in front of her with a coffee.

Fiona completed the marathon in 3:59:23. Upon crossing the line, she said it was “the best day of my life. I loved it. The crowd were great”.

She then celebrated by having two pints, the first bit of alcohol she has had in four months.

Fiona is moving to New York soon but has plans of running in the New York marathon and also redoing the London marathon again.

She has also smashed her target of £1950, raising £2375 so far.

Renee may suffer from asthma and emphysema but it didn’t stop her from running her seventh marathon and eighth long distance run overall.

Bermondsey’s Kevin Downey was running his 30th and final marathon.

This year he ran for young Millwall fan, Harvey Brown, whose family he had met at the Den, and the MPS Society.

In total, he has raised £4,600 and completed it in 5 hours and 35 minutes.

“It’s got harder and I’m not getting any younger!” he said.

Harvey and family were at the sidelines cheering him on.

“I saw them outside Bermondsey tube when I was running past and they shouted to me.

“I saw them later and I went over to give him a kiss and cuddle – it was pretty emotional really!”

Sadly, the 48 year old was unable to beat her personal best time as she struggled with a hip and back injury.

“They gave me a lot of pain and for some reason felt awful at halfway to the extent at one point I didn’t think I could do it!”, she posted on Facebook.

Despite this, she completed the marathon in 4:08:14 with the help of a pep talk for extra motivation.

She has raised £2,878.41 so far for Asthma UK, beating her initial target by 59% and has now gone on a welldeserved holiday - vowing to run the London marathon again.

Alagmir Kabir

Unfortunately, 46-year-old Alagmir Kabir, who ran to raise funds for Evelina Children’s Hospital where his son had been treated for a heart condition, suffered a knee injury at mile ten, resulting in him “hobbling to the end for the next sixteen miles”.

However, a massive positive for Alagmir is the fact he has raised £4,800 and, despite setting a time of 7 hour and 9 minutes, it was a personal best.

One of the doctors he ran with, Aaron Bell, crossed the finish line in three hours and forty five minutes, reaching the target he set himself.

Dr Bell has raised over £1,000, and the Evelina London team is now at Alagmir, with £34, 000, although they are still a little Heart team bit short of their target of £50,000.

Fantastic entertainment with a punch

ADAPTED FROM the original script written by Jerry Sterner in 1989, this production of Other People’s Money was fantastically entertaining whilst also packing a final damning punch. The plot centres on a small town family business run by Jorgy (Michael Brandon), fighting a take-over from the big city corporate raider Lawrence Garfinkle (Rob Locke) wanting to sell it off for parts, writes Hannah Kelly...

As the two businessmen fight it out there is always the danger that the Wall Street lingo could have been a barrier to the general layman viewer; however, the script managed to combine wit and clarity without patronising the audience or leaving them in the dark. As well as the finely tuned pace and comic timing, the staging was also a strong anchor in the production. Considering the small size of the theatre and the tricky placing of the audience, these

obstacles were overcome with good lighting and a simple, but effective set made up of two opposing desks.

Mark Rose and Michael Brandon particularly shone in this production as the two key protagonists battling it out across the stage; on the other hand their female counterparts, Lin Blakely (playing Bea Sullivan) and Amy Burke (playing Kate Sullivan), though strong personalities, were perhaps slightly less nuanced characters. Mark Rose as the

Tyrone Huntley’s directional debut with Ain’t Misbehavin’, The Fats Waller Musical, provides the perfect doorway to experience a slice of the ‘vibe’ during an era marked by the musical innovations taking place in 1920s Harlem, writes Carolyn Taylor...

Movement oozes in abundance on glittering sets as spangle-clad women in feather boas and waist-coated men donning trilbys, sing and dance their way through routines, effectively enticing us into the world of Fats Waller’s smoky jazz joints, where music is buzzing and life is happening.

Seductive performances, expertly choreographed by Strictly Come Dancing’s Oti Mabuse, draw audience members into the charismatic period.

Lyrics reflect issues much closer to home with, ‘save up all your pots and pans, and get some cash for your trash’ coupled with hedonistic lines of ‘I dream about a reefer 5 feet long’ and ‘Here we are at the Waldorf’. War being over, this is a time for living.

Holding a mirror up to the Roaring Twenties, cast members replicate the era’s experimental spirit, combining

sassy, sexy and ethereal numbers, with swing style dance tunes. The dance floor is a space to play out life’s highs and lows, to be playful or melodramatic, but also to unite in artistic expression.

Liberation is felt too in the band’s slick, cool delivery of jazz numbers epitomised by Waller, notably playing ‘ ‘T Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness’, ‘Honeysuckle Rose’ and the hilarious, ‘Your Feet’s Too Big’. Musicians play inconspicuously while dancers captivate the audience, but they are as instrumental as the instruments, and a key ingredient in the overall ambience.

A delightful, enthralling night’s entertainment that is well worth seeing.

narrator figure William Coles was clearly intended as a bridge between either side of the fight. Though his amoral stance provided a subtle amount of grey to the otherwise stark black and white of the baddie and goodie fight that the play could have fallen in to, there was a clear bias towards the condemnation of the dirty Wall Street antics.

Other People’s Money manages to weave some big questions into a play that entertains and educates,

Riotous, raunchy and raucous

IT ROCKED, IT rolled, it was riotous, raunchy and, indeed, raucous. Bernie Dieter and her travelling gang of outlaws are back in SE London to show us all what we’ve been missing. In The Little Death Club you can be who you want and this crew do just that, writes Michael Holland...

As the band jammed blues and rock on the stage, the performers stalked the stalls, strutting their stuff and staring down potential victims. Ms Dieter appeared amongst us and made four men her boys, giving her commands in between verses of the song she was belting out. After being made to paw and stroke her as she sung, they had to carry their Queen back to the spotlight where they knelt in adoration while doing jazz hands. Now that’s what I call an opening number.

What followed was acts that must have had venues closed down in the past, but here had found a spiritual home for ‘misfits and miscreants’. At The Little Death Club what could easily be mundane turns are taken to the next level, to a strata that makes them stand out.

We’ve all seen fire-eaters doing their normal thing - they’re never going to win X Factor. But when Kitty Bang Bang strips down to her nipple tassels, sets fire to them and spins them around with a shimmy and a shake, you know that Britain’s got talent.

And Fancy Chance who flew around above us like an angel in her flowing white robe looked just like, well, an angel! It was a beautiful sight and hard to believe that she was held on to a hook by her hair! Her hair was taking the

weight of the rest of her as she spun, and turned and twisted in the heavens above.

When the robes fell away to reveal she was wearing only tattoos, I was hoping her hair didn’t give way as she flew over me. It was soon after these acts that a man in the crowd had to feign orgasm for us all.

‘I pity those who are here with their parents!’ smirked our Mistress of Ceremonies as she strode around her stage.

The setting is decadent Berlin, so cue mock accents. There was Beau Sargent, a contortionist putting his foot round his neck so he could bite his toenails, plus providing some extraordinary moves in a spinning hoop that got him the biggest applause; a mime who hated his job and Myra DuBois who got us to sing her song for her while she had a sit down.

Each performer had that something different; the little extra that gets you in to the Club.

If you think you’ve seen it all before, go and be surprised. We were. We were also surprised that the nudity was unfairly biased towards only the women getting naked. Are the rules different for men’s nudity? If they are then Bernie got round it by showing unwanted pictures she had been sent by email…

We loved it. There was not a single moment where the audience was not reacting with either laughter or amazement.

A feast fit for a king

e were very excited about the Game of Thrones’ Dinner is Coming feast, based around the award-winning series.

The audience sat at tables replete with wine and were introduced to the newly wed king and queen just as a gift of wine was delivered from afar to celebrate the match. Alas, the wine was poisoned and the king died. Us commoners now had to work out who killed the king, who was plotting against the king and we also had to choose the best House to be in, and all while enjoying a feast fit for a, er, king!

First up was Wildfire Bouillon, a green pea and garlic soup with asparagus, lemonverbena jelly, mint leaves, red radish and lava beans. The soup was quite amazing.

In fact, truly wonderful.

Margarine, the beautiful daughter of the noble Trywell family, mingled with diners convincing us that she had nothing to do with the murder, as did the Lady of Taragon and other assorted reprobates all vying for our vote. As the wine flowed so did the lies and treachery.

Before each course there would be speeches from the candidates that we would analyse and rip apart for motive or clues. As we changed our minds so we changed our allegiances. Dinner was served. The King’s Feast comprised of Spiced Cauliflower, Crispy Chicken Wings, Mixed Bean and Potato Pie, Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, Roast Potatoes, Egmont Carrots and a green salad of courgette, lettuce, beetroot, peas, parsley and pesto dressing. The lamb is the tenderest I have had in living memory. Fiona, a vegetarian, gave high praise for the bean and potato dish and tucked in to the salad while us carnivores at the banquet were like a wolf pack around the meat.

The wine still flowed as a smiling assassin mingled amongst us. He struck and the Man from the Far North was slain for calling us Soft Southerners just one time too many.

Two deaths so far.

More speeches turned attention and suspicion to the widow, though most deemed her far too pretty to be a killer. Dessert - A Scarlet Ending was served.

Pear poached in Red Wine, Cinnamon and Star Anise left our lips blood red. The Sweet and Sour Cream accompaniment was a metaphor for all the looks and leers from the guilty conspirators. We now had to make our final choice for a new king or queen. Plus, the murderer was revealed. I was right with my choice of King Slayer, but Fiona had not taken her own advice and had allowed herself to be lured away to another house. The night came to a close amid cheers and boos, which continued all the way home in the car. ‘Send me victorious,’ I sang for my own benefit.

‘Happy and Glorious,’ I continued until

the back of Fiona’s hand caught me squarely on the nose.

Dinner is Coming is a parody of the popular series and has been timed to coincide with the beginning of the final series. This theatre and dinner combination is great fun whether you are a fan of the show or not.

From The Lane to East Street the market in the heart of Walworth

IF YOU lived anywhere in Southwark during the past 30 years or longer you probably have some memory of East Street or ‘The Lane’ as it was more commonly known.

Whether that being a trip for sarsaparilla from Baldwin’s, or a lick of ice-cream from Rollo’s most people in the borough will have a story to tell about the much loved market street.

To commemorate those memories and the long standing nature of the market, which has been officially running since 1880 but was in existence in a different form long before that, a Southwark Blue Plaque was awarded to it after a public vote by the News, Southwark Heritage and Southwark Council.

The nickname of ‘The Lane’ is said to date back to 1681 where a map shows Walworth Street, now the Walworth Road, at the centre of which was a cross-roads.

A lane leading to the east became known as ‘East Lane’ which is where the East Street market sits today.

Before the market sat on the one street it sprawled up and down the Walworth Road selling mainly foodstuff for people who came from near and far to buy household grub.

The creation of tramlines, starting in 1871, meant that the authorities felt it was no longer safe to have stalls all along the main thoroughfare and instead they sought to force traders down both East Street and Westmoreland Road.

The traders fought the decision but the the onset of the new transport network meant it was a losing battle.

The regulated stalls we see today were not in place when the market first started in an official capacity and instead a free for all system existed.

Waiting with their stalls down the side roads East Street traders would have to wait for a whistle before claiming their pitch. Once that had gone off the rush for the best spots ensued and a day’s work could commence.

The regulated pitch system of today came into place in 1927 which came with a fee to pay the council, and along with that a regulation that there must be at least four stalls between similar trades.

The market has clearly evolved, and during the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s it was the place where self-respecting mums would do some or all of the family shop - and kids would tag along to taste the excitement of the bustling market.

Some will have a memory of hiding under the stalls or finding the latest toys on one of the most popular parts of the street for youngsters. Most will remember trying to find the best deal in clothes, food or other goods long before Tesco and other supermarkets placed them under one roof.

Cup heartbreak for The Rye Leader Trophy Cup final result: Baldon Sports 2-1 Peckham Rye

THE RYE just fell short in their bid to win the Leader Trophy Cup final when they lost 2-1 to Baldon Sports at VCD Athletic last weekend.

The Rye started on top with John Woolley firing in an early effort, before the game was then held up after a 50/50 collision left an opposition defender with a dislocated knee.

The Wesfa committee were involved in dealing with the accident with the game stopped for 40 minutes.

The contest naturally took time to get going after that shock. The Rye went close to a breakthrough but Craig Parsons and Woolley couldn’t edge their side in front.

A Baldon free-kick pumped long into the box left Rye’s Mick Holman stranded and the ball hit the crossbar bar before rebounding in off the goalkeeper.

The Rye battled hard but at halftime they still trailed 1-0.

After the break, Lee Turner started to make an impact in midfield, and his pass allowed Anthony Dennis to square for Parsons but he missed the target from a yard out.

Tarique Jules then forced a one-onone save as his side pressed intensely for an equaliser.

They got it when substitute Ricky Essex crossed and Dennis bravely got his head to the ball to make it 11.

The lead didn’t last long, however, as with four minutes to go another Baldon free-kick into the box led to a flicked header past Holman.

The Rye chased a second leveller but couldn’t get it in front of a crowd of 273.

MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Chris Phillips revealed that his side had achieved all three of their season’s objectives despite losing 5-0 to champions Manchester United at Dartford’s Princes Park last Sunday afternoon.

The gulf between the two sides was apparent, with Manchester United going 4-0 up inside the opening 30 minutes in the Lionesses’ last Women’s Championship game at home this season.

JACOB KOUTOUAN made his second defence of his 71kg Alliance Challenge belt in Hays last Sunday.

The Lynn ABC fighter was up against James Townsend from Mailsbury ABC, and he won the contest with a first-round round stoppage.

“I couldn't ask any more of Jacob in the contest,” coach Terry Pearson said. “He came out and wobbled his opponent instantly with a straight back hand.

“He then went on to put him down three times before the referee stepped in and

stopped the bout.”

Jacob now gets to keep the belt outright.

Also on the show was Kyle English who was having his second bout in as many weeks. He came away with a unanimous point win against an opponent from Hays ABC. Pearson added: “Both boxers did the club proud last weekend. The work Jacob has been putting in since winning this belt has really paid off and I hope his success inspires the other boxers in the gym to do the same.

Phillips added: “She is unreal. I don’t see how she is not in the England setup. I have not looked, I think she still qualifies for the England under-16s, but they must have some worldies if Rhiannon is not that set-up.”

Despite a number of improved performances in the second half of the season when they got their first league win, the defeat to Manchester United means that the Lionesses will end the season at the foot of the table despite having one more game to play.

“If you are looking at the season, I see progression and that is what I wanted to see this year.” Phillips continued.

“We had three objectives this year, and that was to be the best side in the country for offering young players first-team football. With an average age of 18, I think we definitely achieved that.

“We wanted to have a club that was financially sustainable, and we have done that by coming in under budget this year. I think there has been progression more so off the pitch, but

also on the pitch as well.

“I looked at the start of the season at bringing in development-team football, and it took them up until December to learn this level. From the Arsenal game onwards I saw a different team that understood, was willing to fight and willing to work hard.

“I have got to praise the players and the staff around them for that progression.

“We are not a Chelsea, or any Super League club that has a massive budget and we also do not have the pressures to be qualifying and winning trophies.

“We will still aim to be the best at something, and that will be providing young players, and especially young English players an opportunity to get first-team football in the Championship.”

JAKE ROSE scored the only goal of the game as Fisher secured a third-place finish in their first season back in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table.

On-loan Bristol City midfielder George Nurse struck the post as the already-relegated hosts pressed for a second.

Gethyn Hill then seemed certain to add a second but with just Cook to beat he fired well off-target.

Akinyemi then went past Kingston but couldn’t finish from a tight angle, but Hamlet were level twelve minutes from time. Nurse gave the ball away, and Tajbakhsh took advantage by firing home a fierce effort past Kingston.

The match ended in drama as Cook was given a straight red card after a skirmish in the box, meaning Thompson became the third different goalkeeper, and second outfield player, to go between the posts for Hamlet.

IT WAS like they’d never been apart.

For three seasons Lee Gregory and Steve Morison spearheaded Millwall to play-off challenges, a promotion and a glorious FA Cup run.

It was Gregory’s flick-on that set up Morison for the winning goal with five minutes left in the 2017 League One play-off final.

It usually worked the other way around and they were at it again on Tuesday night, probably for the last time at The Den. One or both could leave this summer.

A contract offer to Gregory has remained untouched for months, and at 30 it’s hard to blame him for seeking one last big move. Certainly there are probably not many Millwall fans that would begrudge a player who only began a Football League career at the age of 25 a big pay day that would accompany a free-transfer move.

Tuesday was just the second time in 2019 Morison and Gregory started a league game up front together, a partnership slowly split apart by the insistence of time and the wear and tear of professional football.

But their performance in tandem against Bristol City was like a nod to nostalgia, one final tango under the Den lights. Even Neil Harris admitted the “sentiment” in their selection together.

No other strike pair under Harris have had the same understanding.

None was as difficult for defenders to handle. The incessant work rates, Gregory’s movement and Morison’s ability to find him so often with the kind of deft headers he’s not given enough credit for.

Morison’s header down and Gregory’s brilliant finish gave Millwall a 41st-minute lead.

Morison’s nod towards Gregory in the 72nd minute tempted Robins goalkeeper Max O’Leary off his line but the Lions’ top scorer this season got there first and was fouled.

Ironically Gregory was relieved of penalty duties last season. Shaun Williams stepped up, but O’Leary saved his tame effort.

After Jamie Paterson equalised from a free-kick, Morison, yet again, found Gregory with a header for the striker to attempt a spectacular bicycle-kick that Tomas Kalas had to clear off the line.

They were just some of the highlights as the two centre-forwards gave the Bristol City defence a torrid time.

It was a fitting way to sign off their partnership, even if their efforts didn’t result in three points. Famara Diedhiou had the last say in this contest, firing home an 82nd-minute winner.

It feels like the end of an era for this particular Millwall side. There will be major squad rebuilding this summer, as Harris indicated with a brutally honest post-match interview when he

opened up about some of the problems this season.

Harris said some players let the club down, lacked professionalism, have said they didn’t want to play for Millwall again. It will become clearer who he was referring to when departures occur in the next transfer window.

In an interview with the club’s video channel he said there might be some surprises. Speculation is sure to reach fever-pitch levels over the coming months. This is undoubtedly the biggest summer in Harris’ time in charge. He and the recruitment staff have to get it right. There was a major clear-out in the summer of 2015, his first transfer window after becoming

permanent boss, but that was dealing with others’ mess.

Eighteen of the current 24-man firstteam squad are his signings, and surely some of them were ones he was referring to this week. Players, for whatever reason, fell well below expectations. This is more or less the squad he has built, and now he faces the biggest challenge of his managerial career.

Harris admitted this was the end of a four-year cycle. It’s not going to be easy to tear it up and effectively start again. Millwall simply do not have the money to go out and get who they want. They have to be smarter than rivals in the transfer market, gain whatever edge they can. Then there is

the matter of whether some of their targets will want to join a club that could finish fourth-last in the Championship. There will be plenty of persuading to do.

It’s key they get the right characters.

Harris said after Tuesday’s defeat if everyone had Gregory’s attitude Millwall would be in the top half of the table. There will certainly be no animosity from Harris towards Gregory if the striker leaves.

Replacing him will be a huge task.

He’s done the work of two forwards in some games this season, and has still managed thirteen goals. Gregory deserves the chance to test himself elsewhere, perhaps at a club challenging for promotion in the

Championship.

Who the others on the way out are and where they end up remains to be seen. Fred Onyedinma seems certain to be one of them. Jordan Archer is fit but was criticised by his manager earlier this season and wasn’t in the match-day squad again on Tuesday.

There might be some who Harris admires and respects but who he feels need to be moved on anyway. And will we see different kinds of players recruited? A midfield creator?

Attacking full-backs with crossing and shooting ability. Strikers with rapid pace? It will be an intriguing summer.

If Harris and the club don’t get it spot on, then another season battling relegation could bring real unrest.

We’re short of numbers because of injuries. The young lads have done well in the younger teams.

There will be a lot of change in the summer, a lot of change. Some players have really let me down this year, have let the football club down. There’s been a lot that won’t come out that has made it difficult.

A lot goes on that people don’t see.

What I want is a group of players that I’ve had in the past that we’ve not had at times this year. A group of players that show commitment to the cause, that are good in the dressing room, that are professional within the football club, have a winning mentality and want to be better and learn.

Players this year haven’t had that, that have told me they don’t ever want to play for this club again.

We have to invest and get better players in over the course of the summer, because the Championship is getting better and if we don’t then we’ll get further away. That was evident this year.

I cannot be any clearer: I can only have people that want to be at this football club within my changing room. People that put their professionalism and their job and their love for the game before anything else.

Footballers are no different to society, no different to your friends when they have issues. The level of performance from some individuals this year has been nowhere near good enough.

I’m the guy that has to stand on the touchline and take the brunt of it because I always back my players – but they’ve let me down at times this year individually and I won’t accept that moving forward.

The time for change hasn’t been in January, hasn’t been in February or March. The time for change is in the summer – and I will change it.

I don’t know exactly [how many players will be recruited] because of contract situations. I’m going to be ruthless this summer. I know exactly what I want to do.

We’ve had a great period at this club.

I took over at a time when relegation was inevitable. I changed the personnel because there were too many senior players on a lot of money that didn’t care about the club. I managed to get them out and bring new players through.

We’ve just completed a four-year cycle. I’m not going to end up in that situation again.

We’ve had two play-off finals culminating in promotion. We came eighth in the Championship last year on the smallest budget in the division.

Two FA Cup quarter-finals. I’m not going to allow that to disappear without having the opportunity to build a new team, we have to build a new squad.

We need better players than what we’ve got, better personalities than what we’ve got. That’s what I’ll be telling everybody.

I don’t do social media so I don’t need to hazard a guess what’s on it. I know my players better than anybody, I know my group mentality better than anybody. I know what needs to change. I know what players need to go and I know the players that need to come in. I’ll be doing my damnedest to change it.

People have had an opinion this year, fair play to them, that’s fine, but I won’t allow people to question me or my changing room next season if it’s not right.

The game changes, the game moves on. Players get older. They get egotistic, they get self-important.

That’s not just my players, I’m talking about in general. Players do get older, you do have to change things. Players are in form, out of form. Class is permanent for a period of time, form is temporary. If they don’t come out of that bad form you’ve got to change them.

Keeper reveals extent of torment after FA Cup mistake

DAVID MARTIN almost threw up before Millwall’s game against Leeds at Elland Road in March – after his mistake against Brighton in the FA Cup quarter-final left him feeling “horrific” tension.

An international break meant Martin had to wait almost two weeks to play again after his error.

Martin revealed exactly what his manager Neil Harris said to him in the dressing after he let Solly March’s free-kick through his grasp in injurytime and the Seagulls went on to win on penalties.

Martin’s appearance against Brighton was just his second of the season, only his sixth since he joined in September 2017.

He got his moment of redemption at Elland Road when he saved Patrick Bamford’s penalty, though the Lions lost the game 3-2.

“I’ve never had a feeling like it,” Martin said. “It was a long, long two weeks. On the way to the game I couldn’t speak to anyone because I was concentrating on not throwing up, honestly.

“The tension I felt before that game was horrific, and it probably still is a bit [like that] but not as bad now. I wanted to do so well and I felt like I let everyone down against Brighton.

“Okay we didn’t get the result [at Leeds] but the lads played really well and it gave us the belief to take into the rest of the games.

“It was on my mind literally every minute of every day. Even now. In ten years’ time if you ask me about it I’ll probably still cringe. I couldn’t watch it, I still haven’t watched it. It’s just one of those things you hope will never happen, but it did.

“I don’t think I can watch it. It might be one of those things where you’ll be watching TV and it’ll pop up somewhere and it’ll be, ‘aargh, no!’ I won’t intentionally watch it.

“It was a massive low for me, but it almost galvanised me a little bit to think, ‘I’ve got to stand up now and be counted’. I’d like to think the supporters could see that.

“I won’t ever say I’m the best goalkeeper in the world but no one can ever say to me I haven’t got the courage or bravery to do what I think is right. That’s what I try to do.

“It’s probably been the most unbelievable time in my career. It was just under two years before I played consecutive games.

“It was a big ask so fair play to the manager, it takes a lot of courage to put me in in that situation and trust in me. I can only thank him for that.

“I had to try and go in and do what I could do for the team, especially in the league. I had the low with the FA Cup game, but all my team-mates, the

gaffer, the fans, they got me through that. The support that I’ve felt when I’ve played here the last seven weeks has been unbelievable and it’s given me the foundation to try to do the best for the team. I thank everyone so much.

“The gaffer said after the Brighton game, when I was lower than a snake’s belly, ‘Dave, you’ve been brilliant for me since you’ve been here, on and off the pitch, and I’m going to need you at Leeds’. He said that in the team-talk afterwards.

“He was great with me. He pulled me to one side and had a chat with me.

I needed that from my manager at that point. I just hope that I’ve been part of a team the last seven weeks that has repaid him. And hopefully it’ll be like that in the future as well.

“The lads in front of me have done amazingly as well. Alex Pearce has come in, Coops [Jake Cooper] has been brilliant. Mahlon [Romeo] and Fergie [Shane Ferguson], even Gregs [Lee Gregory] up top. He probably

hasn’t scored as many goals as he would have liked but he’s been crucial in how we’ve ground out results with his work for the team.”

Martin is currently Millwall’s firstchoice goalkeeper. He was uncertain about his future when he spoke to the News earlier this season, but he now wants to extend his career at the club.

“It’s been a whirlwind seven or eight weeks,” he continued. “It was almost a case of I didn’t want to think about [his contract situation]. I was just focused on the next game.

“In the back of your mind you do know if you do the business on the pitch everything will take care of itself. That’s always been the way. For me just getting onto the pitch was a tough thing to do.

“I’m just pleased that the gaffer has given me the chance. We’ll see what happens with contracts. I hope I’ve put myself into a good position, I don’t know.

“I love it here. I love this club. The personality that I have suits here.

What the supporters want, I feel part

of it. I think it’s a cracking little club and I’ve enjoyed my time here even when I haven’t been playing.

“You can see the passion fans have.

I do want to be part of this club in the future.

“The way I’ve looked at it in the last seven weeks is that I’ve had people’s futures in my hands as well. You don’t want to let anyone down because if there’s a relegation people lose a lot of money.

“People have young families here.

You want to do well for the people around you, as well as yourself, obviously, I’ve got a young family.

You want to do things right, and be competitive like we have been recently.

“I’m just bouncing from one game to the next at the moment so I’m not thinking about what’s happened before. The only thing that has mattered recently has been the result we’ve got on a given day and what Rotherham got.

“We’re safe now.”

Summer changes at Millwall will be ‘interesting’

STEVE MORISON said Millwall were back in the “real world” this season – and the Lions skipper was relieved to avoid a first career relegation on his CV.

The Lions can only finish as high as 20th, a significant drop after last season’s eighth place.

But Morison – who has never experienced the drop in seventeen seasons as a senior professional – stressed that once it was obvious the Lions were not going to hit the highs of 2017-18, survival was all that mattered.

“I think that last year we lived a bit of a dream because of a bit of a snowball effect,” Morison told the News this week.

“We just kept on winning and it was crazy.

“This year we lived a little bit more in the real world. It’s been hard for a lot of people on the outside to deal with that.

But, within the camp, we’ve always known it would be a case of, ‘we stay in the league this year’.

“We obviously wanted to get to 50 points. We are safe and, if we end up fourth-bottom, it’s about right for where we have been this year. Our aim was to stay in the league, and we have stayed in the league.

“If you finish third and don’t get promoted, for example, it’s no different to finishing fourth-bottom, is it? They’ve just got a few more points on the board. We are all in the same situation and start again next year.”

STEVE MORISON believes his former club Leeds United will be left disappointed this season – with Aston Villa his favourites to go up.

Norwich City, whom Morison also played for, and Sheffield have been promoted to the Premier League and are competing for the title this weekend.

Three play-off places have been decided, with Villa the form side heading into the end-of-season shootout.

“I fancy Villa,” Morison said. “I think they’re strong. I think they’re going in the right direction.

“Leeds need to find form in the last

“You don’t think about the money side of it, you think about the feeling of you don’t want to be getting relegated. The football club doesn’t deserve to be in League One after what we have done over the last four years.

“And for next season, the hard work starts now.”

Morison praised not only the management staff but staff around the whole club after the most difficult season yet under Neil Harris.

“The gaffer just carries on,” Morison said. “ All you have to do in that situation is keep your head and keep working hard.

“The manager, Livers [Dave Livermore], Adds [Adam Barrett] Dan [McLoone], Bloomy [Laurence Bloom]...the girls in the office, no one works harder at this football club than them.

“Obviously you get your rewards for

hard work and we didn’t, as players, get the job done quickly enough. We had to rely on other people, but I think sometimes you make your own luck.

Other teams didn’t take advantage of opportunities they had and it worked well for us.

“This year, there is a nice sense of relief but I think it’s not a time for celebrating that. It’s time for realising it has been a tough old season. It’s been a long season.

“We’ve got to the quarter-final of the FA Cup and we have pushed, pushed, pushed and pushed. At times it hasn’t been good enough. We have had some fantastic results when needed.

“We’ve got over the line, and now the manager and powers that be will work incredibly hard to make sure that we, as a football club, can be in the best possible position for next season and get to that 50 points as quickly as possible.”

Millwall’s point against Stoke last Saturday effectively sealed their survival.

It was one of the most anxious occasions at The Den this season, and Morison revealed what he told his team-mates after their first-half struggles were met with dissatisfaction by the home fans.

Morison felt there wasn’t enough appreciation of what Millwall were competing against. Stoke had enough strength in depth to leave Bojan Krkic – a Champions League finalist with Barcelona – out of their first-team squad.

“The atmosphere on Saturday was just horrible, and there was just a sense around the place,” Morison said. “I went in at half-time and said to the boys: ‘Look, this is hard. There’s no noise, you got booed off at half-time. You’re playing Stoke, look at their squad, their line-up. The geezer Bojan not even getting dressed.’

“You know what I mean? We’re scraping together a squad for the game

and it was horrible Saturday. It was a weird, weird, weird vibe.”

Morison feels coming through a season when there has been so much pressure, and criticism from fans, should help the younger players’ development.

He said: “It should be massive for them.

It’s difficult for those types of lads because you don’t see much emotion from them.

But it will be massive for them and it will be good for them to learn.

“Hopefully everyone has learnt loads this season. Hopefully people will have learnt lots this simmer and there won’t be a conversation in pre-season where people are saying, 'do you know what, this is going to be harder than last year’, which we had to have after our great season last season.

“The realisation now is that however tough the league has been, it’s going to get even tougher again next year. You look at the teams that might come up, there could be a couple of powerhouses there.

“Teams that are coming down are going to have parachute payments. It’s going to be a tough league and the lads need to be prepared.”

Morison will be 36 next August. Harris has already said he will be part of the playing squad next season.

Morison isn’t putting a limit on how many seasons he might have left as a player.

“I feel great. You feel good every day when you’re not playing! So we will wait and see. I would like to be doing preseason somewhere. It’s a tough part of the year but it does set you up for the season.

I like being fit.

“I’m sure the manager is working incredibly and I think there will be a few ins and outs over the summer. It will be interesting to watch – but hopefully I don’t have to worry about watching it!”

NEIL HARRIS has revealed he expects a busy summer transfer market for Millwall.

Focus has fully turned to restructuring the squad after Championship safety was secured last weekend with the 0-0 draw against Stoke followed by Rotherham’s 2-1 defeat at West Brom.

Harris gave a strong response to a question about summer recruitment, stressing he wanted “better pros” and “players with more hunger”.

“I think it’s clear to see we need an injection of

personnel,” Harris told the News this week. “What we did coming out of League One and recruiting to go into the Championship was we took a gamble on a lot of players from League One. “And we had a great season, but we had a great season once we go to 44 points.

The shackles came off and we played and we developed.

“Nearly every one of my players played to the full extent of their ability last year.

Coupled with momentum we were a dangerous team.

“This year a lot of players haven’t played to their full potential. It’s been a difficult period and we have to make sure that next season everybody is playing to the best of their ability.

“The league has gone to another level, it’s so much better this year compared to last year. If we want to live with the expectation of some of our fans saying that we have to progress as a club and start competing, then we have to invest.

That’s the way at it is at this level.

“I’m not talking about going and spending £10million on a player, because that’s not possible for us, but you have to bring the personnel in and you have to pay to get them in at this level.

“Credit to Sheffield United and Norwich, but they get 30,000 [attendance] every week. They can pay players to come in and have done a great job at doing it. We have to make sure that we improve our squad.

“It will be busy this summer. We have to recruit players that are going to make us better. We have to try to recruit players that can hopefully compete in the Championship.

“It’s a tough league. You look at Stoke last weekend, only four or five players above us, but how good was their team?

How good were their players?

“And it’s not just about players, it’s about characters. I love my group of players but I need better pros. I need players with more hunger.

“That will start immediately.”

Millwall boss Neil Harris said earlier this season that Morison would be a Lions player in 2019-20, but the club skipper has yet to sign a new deal.

The Lions will be in the Championship for a third straight season after beating relegation with two games left, and Harris insisted this campaign he didn’t want to lose Morison, who is out of contract this summer.

The News asked Morison for an update on his future this week, and reminded him of Harris’ assurances.

Morison responded: “Well, someone needs to ring me!”

He added: “It isn’t even something we have spoken about. It is a question for the manager and I presume getting safe and that was the main priority, so we haven’t spoken about it.

“It’s his decision, it’s up to the manager. With everything that has gone on he might change his mind, I might be looking for a club!

“I don’t yet know, we will wait and see and there will be discussions, I suppose, starting after the game Tuesday night, with a lot of people.

“It will be interesting to see what happens.”
