Three more people jailed for their part in council house fraud

THREE MORE people have been sentenced for links to a corrupt Southwark Council officer, who helped fraudsters find council homes on fake homelessness claims.

As part of Southwark’s Operation Bronze, one of council’s largest fraud investigations, the trio were prosecuted at Woolwich Crown Court for their links to Trudy AliBalogun (pictured) – a homelesscaseworker who handled 24 bogus cases between 2003 and 2005.

Authorities need to step in if traffic turns into gridlock

rivers in the north of the borough face huge upheaval for the next three months as Tower Bridge closes for essential works.

The works on the 122-year-old landmark, which was last refurbished in the 1970s, coincide with the partial closure of nearby Tooley Street, a main thoroughfare connecting it to London Bridge.

A range of measures to help minimise disruption during the works - such as drivers using signed diversion routes not having to pay the Congestion Charge, and roadworks in the area banned during the period - are being brought in, but we think road users will already be anticipating the traffic jams that will follow.

One taxi driver, Abdul, whose job, like many people’s, relies on being able to drive through the area, told the News that the closures would be ‘absolutely terrible for the local community and cab drivers’.

Jean Davies, chair of the Bermondsey Street TRA, said that TfL was not taking into account the elderly who lived in the area, as several bus routes will also be affected.

Leon Daniels, the managing director of Surface Transport at TfL, has said that if the two sets of works - Tooley Street and Tower Bridge - were carried out separately, road users could face disruption for longer than if they are done at the same time. If they were carried out separately the works could go on until 2018, he said.

Whilst the works are either already underway or inevitable, as Lib Dem leader Anood Al-Samerai argues, the council and TfL need to be monitoring the situation closely and be ready to step in with alternative plans if the area comes to a halt. And it also might be an opportunity for the council and TfL to work on how to deal with the existing traffic gridlock that is a daily fact of life in the north of the borough.

TWO SKELETONS found in a Borough Roman cemetery may be from China and could turn experts’ understanding of Roman London on its head, according to astounded scientists.

The dig in Lant Street unearthed more than twenty sets of human remains from the second and fourth

centuries, and through using state of the art techniques, archaeologists were able to examine dental samples to learn more about their origins.

Dr Rebeca Redfern, curator of human osteology at the Museum of London, went on to reveal in an academic paper that two of the skeletons possibly came from China.

She told BBC Radio 4’s The World At One: “This is absolutely

phenomenal. This is the first time in Roman Britain we’ve identified people with Asian ancestry and only the third or fourth in the empire as a whole.”

In her article in the Journal of Archaeological Science, she said: “The expansion of the Roman Empire across most of western Europe and the Mediterranean, led to the assimilation and movement of many ethnically and geographically diverse

"Its power and wealth meant that it also had trade connections for raw materials and products, such as silk throughout Europe, Africa and also to the east, including India and China.

"Many people travelled, often vast distances, for trade or because of their occupation, for example in the military, or their social status, for example if they were enslaved.

“It may well be that these

individuals were themselves or were descended from enslaved people originating from Asia, as there were slave-trade connections between India and China, and India and Rome.”

The find could mean that trade between Rome and China took place along the famous Silk Road, as well as challenge the view that “Londinium” [the Roman city of London] was relatively homogenous.

THREE MORE people have been sentenced for links to a corrupt Southwark Council officer, who helped fraudsters find council homes on fake homelessness claims.

Rachel is described as white, around 5ft 4ins tall with a skinny build, shoulder length blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a black Nike top, black leggings, gold trainers and was carrying a cream coloured bag.

Syed is described as Asian, around 5ft 9ins with a stocky build (weighing approximately 18 stone) with collar length dark hair. He was last seen wearing green trousers, grey t-shirt and black/navy jacket.

Areas that the pair could possibly be frequenting are Crystal Palace, Streatham and Wandsworth.

Anyone who sees either Rachel or Syed, or anyone who knows of their whereabouts, is urged to contact police in Southwark on 101.

POLICE ARE appealing for help to locate a missing Rotherhithe woman and Streatham man as they are "concerned for both of their safety and wellbeing".

Rachel Chagger, 30, from Rotherhithe was last seen at 11:35pm on Thursday night September 22 when she stated that she was going to Canary Wharf to see her friends.

However, she never returned home and hasn't been seen or heard from since.

Old Kent Road consultation

Berkeley Homes is looking to submit a planning application for the Malt Street site by the end of 2016, with initial proposals suggesting a dramatic change to layout of the 5.3 acre area.

The first consultation in April proposed a new route linking the Old Kent Road to Burgess Park along the historic Grand Surrey Canal, as well as better access across the site from north to south.

The scheme is part of the Old Kent Road Opportunity Area, which was outlined by former Mayor Boris Johnson andthe council as a brownfield site with capacity for development.

The consultation on Saturday from 9:30am to 12:30pm, at the Unwin and Friary Estate Tenants’ and Residents’ Hall in Frensham Street SE15 6TH.

A FORMER Bermondsey teaching assistant who stamped on his heavily pregnant ex-girlfriend stomach and killed their unborn baby has lost his appeal against a life sentence.

Kevin Wilson, 23, from the Longfield Estate, was sentenced to a minimum of sixteen years at the Old Bailey in February for child destruction and causing grievous bodily harm to Malorie Bantala.

Theresa Okondunjokanma, Florence Allen and Raphael Djeugam all received council homes obtained using fraudulent documentation processed

by Ali-Balogun, and were found guilty of “obtaining services by deception” under the Theft Act 1978.

The latest prosecutions follow five in April including Ali-Balogun, as Biayo Awotiwon of Devon Mansions in Tooley Street, Adeyemi Olalekan Oyedele of Webb Street in Bermondsey, Kudiartu Falana of Inville Road in Walworth, and Joseph Akin Olaiya of Gillingham, Kent were all found guilty in April.

Okondunjokanma was sentenced to eighteen months’ imprisonment, as a first for the council, as she was also sentenced for illegally subletting a secured tenancy (Prevention of Social Housing Fraud Act 2013).

The new law was introduced by the government to give local authorities greater powers to tackle housing fraud.

The court heard that as part of Okondunjokanma’s homeless application, she had provided three false child birth certificates, false bank statements, a false child benefit letter and a false indefinite leave to remain vignette in her Nigerian

passport.

As a result, Okondunjokanma was offered a property in Peckham, which was then illegally sublet to her sister and her family.

She was then moved to another Southwark tenancy in Camberwell.

The property has since been returned to the council.

Florence Allen and Raphael Djeugam were ordered to service fifteen months and two years respectively in prison for their crimes.

Allen was offered a tenancy in Bermondsey after producing a false child birth certificate, false bank statements, false Nigerian passports with indefinite leave to remain vignettes, false national insurance numbers and false utility bills, to support her homeless application. The property will now be recovered by the council.

Man who stamped on heavily pregnant ex-girlfriend has appeal on life sentence denied his own hands after Miss Bantala refused to have an abortion.

Wilson carried out the brutal attack with a seventeen-year-old accomplice who had learning difficulties. Together they ambushed Miss Bantala wearing motorbike helmets as she left the Peckham Marks and Spencer, where she had been planning a baby shower.

The attack resulted in their healthy 32week-old boy being stillborn, and Miss Bantala needing life-saving surgery.

At the Court of Appeal on Tuesday, three judges said the life sentence was justified, but reduced the length of the minimum term to fourteen years less time on remand.

Mr Justice Spencer said it was an “unspeakably wicked act” “Here was a young man who was

prepared to take the steps he did in a calculated and cold-blooded way to achieve his objective, because there was an obstacle in his way,” Judge Spencer said.

Judge Mark Lucraft called it “a cowardly, vile, callous attack”.

The court heard how Miss Bantala curled up on the ground, desperately trying to protect her unborn child with one hand as Wilson and his accomplice stamped on her.

Miss Bantala lost six pints of blood and broke two fingers, and immediately told police her child's father was responsible, saying: “He doesn't want the baby.”

She described her innocent son, Joel, as the “real victim” and said “the moment Joel died inside me I lost everything. Life as I knew it no longer made sense”.

Operation Bronze was set up to combat this and ensure that anyone found profiting from council resources was brought to justice.

“Today I am pleased to say that we have accomplished much of what we set out to do. The operation has resulted in 38 convictions and has recovered 42 properties which can be reallocated to genuine applicants.

“Crucially, we’ve now developed a culture of accountability and greater scrutiny of council resources with improved measures for preventing and identifying fraud.”

Police appeal teenager stabbed

CAMBERWELL: A teenage boy was found stabbed this week, leading police to cordon off six shops in Crossthwaite Avenue.

The Met confirmed they were called to the scene by London Ambulance Service at 8:05pm on Monday September 26.

A spokesperson for the force told the News: “Officers and London Air Ambulance attended and found a sixteen-year-old boy suffering from stab injuries.

“He was taken to a central London hospital where he remains in a stable condition.”

No arrests had been made at the time this newspaper went to press.

Police are asking anyone with information concerning this incident to call police on 101 or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111.

Three convicted of kidnap of woman from Kent street

THREE PEOPLE have been convicted of kidnap after a Kent woman was discovered bloodied and beaten in Nunhead by a local resident.

The victim, who cannot be named, was assaulted with a baseball bat, knuckleduster and dog chain, after being driven to Burgess Park on April 1.

Kaswayne Williams, nineteen, of Peckham Park Road; George Emmett, eighteen, of Lakeside Close in Sidcup; and Sheneqwa Delpratt, 20, of New Paragon Walk in Walworth; were convicted on September 20.

A jury at Maidstone Crown Court returned guilty verdicts after a two-week trial.

Williams was also convicted of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and possessing an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, while Emmet was found guilty of assault.

Willams and Emmett were also found guilty of blackmail, robbery and possessing offensive weapons.

The court heard how the victim had arranged to meet Emmett in Hopewell Drive, Chatham in Kent, at about 11.30pm to discuss money that was owed to her. As they spoke, a black Ford Focus driven by Delpratt with Williams in the passenger seat pulled up alongside them.

After letting her dog off its lead, Emmett and Williams forced the woman into the back of the car before binding her hands with duct tape.

During the journey to London, the victim was ordered not to look out of the window and was told that she owed Williams £2,000 and that if she did not pay him then he would kill members of her family.

After some time the car stopped and Emmett punched the woman in the face before hitting her with her own dog chain. He then walked away from the

vehicle, leaving Williams and Delpratt alone with the victim.

The car was driven to the middle of Burgess Park, next to the park’s football pitch and New Peckham Mosque, where Williams threatened the woman with a firearm. He then dragged her out of the vehicle by her hair and led her into a park area, where he struck her with a metal baseball bat. A sock had been stuffed into her mouth and secured with duct tape so nobody could hear her screams.

Following the assault, she was bundled back into the car and driven to Nunhead railway station, where Williams punched her twice in the face with a knuckleduster before dumping on the ground and driving off.

She was found by a member of the public who telephoned for an ambulance.

Delpratt handed herself into police on April 4, while Williams was arrested on April 5, and Emmett on April 14.

Investigating officer detective constable Matthew Lincoln of Kent Police, said: “These are quite possibly the most callous acts of violence I have ever investigated in fifteen years as a police officer.

“It is a truly shocking case in which two men viciously assaulted a woman in an argument over money, assisted by Delpratt whose role as designated driver meant she was far from being an innocent bystander.

“Neither Williams nor Emmett demonstrated any concern for their victim’s welfare. She could have very easily died after being subjected to such serious and sustained attacks. I would like to praise the tremendous courage she has displayed throughout this whole ordeal.

“Kent Police simply will not tolerate such appalling acts of violence and all three defendants are likely to receive lengthy prison sentences for the horrendous crimes they have committed.”

Sentencing will take place at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday October 3.

Court faces closure CAMBERWELL

CAMBERWELL Magistrates’ has been earmarked for closure, as shown by a new Department of Justice consultation.

The report with the consultation states that it forms part of the government’s plan to shut 86 courts across England and Wales, in a bid to “remove some of the least used and most inefficient buildings from the court estate”.

The department also hopes to demolish Hammersmith Magistrates’ Court, which would bring the total number of these courts in London down to eighteen from 23, and from eighteen family and civil courts in London to sixteen.

However, it adds that the department would splash £700m so it can “digitise and streamline” court and tribunal services.

This would be to help the surviving courts “absorb” and “consolidate” the

flow of criminal cases.

The report said: “We would expect the closures to take place within the lifetime of this Parliament (i.e. by 2020). We expect significant change to the workloads of our courts over that period as a result of the changes introduced by court and tribunal reform.”

The consultation began on September 15 and finishes October 27, in the hope of hearing the views of “the judiciary, magistracy, staff, criminal justice practitioners and elected representatives”.

The News reported in June that Southwark Crown Court was on the Department of Justice’s hit list of venues it would like to close. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice refused to deny this was the case.

Police release CCTV in ‘gentle giant’ murder appeal

Detectives believe two people could be witnesses

SCOTLAND YARD has released videos of two men detectives wish to speak in connection with the murder investigation of Andrew OtengOwusu, who was stabbed on his estate in August.

Police are treating both men as witnesses, and officers believe they could have seen or heard something that could be vital in finding nineteen-year-old Andrew's attacker.

A £20,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible for Andrew’s death.

The popular young man who cared for his ill mother Tina Ababio in the Lovelinch Estate, near Millwall’s stadium, was stabbed in his right leg on August 3, as he

walked home with his mum’s shopping at 11.35pm.

Despite surgeons’ efforts to save him, Andrew was pronounced dead twelve hours later at King’s College Hospital.

Detective Inspector Tom Dahri, who is leading the investigation, said: "It is nearly two months since Andrew was stabbed near to his home at the junctions of Hornshay Street and Lovelinch Close.

"We know that after he was stabbed he staggered home and collapsed at his front door, where he was found by his mother.

"He has been described as a "gentle giant" and was a carer for his mother, who is on dialysis.

"There are few clues as to why this might have happened.

"The community on the Lovelinch Estate have been really supportive of the investigation, and we have spoken to a number of witnesses so far, but I would still like to speak to a young black man,

who we understand walked with Andrew to his block after he had been stabbed. Also the two men in the CCTV images we have released who were walking in the area when Andrew was stabbed.

"It is entirely possible that they may have seen or heard something that could be important to the investigation and it is imperative they come forward.

"I would like to reassure them that they are being treated as witnesses and will be dealt with in the utmost sensitivity."

Police also arrested a 55-year-old man on September 6 in connection with the investigation, who was bailed until a date in November pending further enquiries.

Four face trial in February WALWORTH

FOUR MEN accused of beating a 25-year-old Walworth man Reginald Ofei-Berko to death with a pushbike will face trial in February.

Mr Ofei-Berko was allegedly attacked

by John Paul Gillespie, 43, Mason Adrien-Dixon, 21, Leon Dixon, 37, and Daniel Murphy, aged nineteen.

The victim was found lying unconscious on the pavement in Penrose Street, Walworth, on August 25. Police were called at around 3.05pm, and Mr OfeiBerko was pronounced at King’s College Hospital later that day.

In appeals for information, detectives said Mr Ofei-Berko was seen in a pawnbroker shop on Walworth Road approximately two hours before the alleged attack.

At around 3pm he was allegedly involved in an altercation involving a group of four men in the Penrose Street area.

Gillespie appeared unrepresented at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC said: “The defendant has been charged with the murder of Reginald Ofei-Berko in respect of an incident that took place at the end of August.

“The Crown allege the victim was attacked by a group of four men and received multiple injuries from which he died.”

The three other defendants have already been before the court charged with murder and all four face trial on February 20 next year.

They will next appear before the court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on 23 November.

‘Watchdog was wrong to close my surgery’ - GP

A BERMONDSEY GP who had his St James Church surgery shut down by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) over the summer, has slammed their report published last week as all about “compliance”.

Dr David Zigmond, 70, was a GP for 39 years in the area but in July an inspection by the CQC led to him being taken to court to have the surgery immediately suspended.

The reasons for doing so were finally published last week in a report that found the practice to be “overall inadequate”.

The regulation breaches found by CQC inspectors included: • Lack of emergency equipment • Staff did not adequately assess patient consent and capacity • The methods for prescribing patient medication were unsafe

• The practice’s procedures around child and adult safeguarding did not ensure that vulnerable people were kept safe • The practice did not comply with a number of current medical guidelines and best practice

But Dr Zigmond has defended his record as a GP in the wake of the decision, saying they expect too much form-filling which gets in the way of actually treating patients.

He told the News: “I’ve been a GP for 39 years. It [the report] makes me look so bad. It makes you think “how did I last a week”! It’s all about compliance. I have had a lot of time to think about it. I am a vocational doctor and am happy to carry my own risk.

“I make decision about patients not the commission. What, I should ask them about what I should do?

“It used to be like a family, the NHS. You would do what you could and help people. We trusted each other and would do what is right.

“Now it’s more of a factory. “We are

going to tell you what to do, we are going to instruct everybody”. I would not use a depression questionnaire when someone comes in when their marriage has collapsed. These things are delicate and personal.

“Most doctors don’t say so because they’re young. They have families to support so they have much more to lose.

I don’t have anything to lose now that my family has grown up.

“In an IPSO Mori Poll in July I was rated very highly. So how do you square the two? You can’t get away with it for 40 years. I don’t make mistakes and have never had an accident.

“What I am different in is compliance

Dr Zigmond was praised by his patients for the close relationship he maintained with them, with one saying “his surgery should be used as a guide for how GP practices should be”.

One patient of Dr Zigmond for more than 30 years, said: “Dr Zigmond has seen me through two breakdowns, pancreatic cancer (survivor of eighteen years) and successful neurosurgery. It probably doesn't tick all the boxes of your idea of a practice being clinical and impersonal and waiting weeks for an appointment.

“But this was never a problem at Dr

Zigmond's. My confidence in his team cannot be matched.”

Ursula Gallagher, Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice in CQC’s London region, said: “Whilst we absolutely appreciate how important continuity, kindness and compassion are for patients and carers, many additional things are required to ensure that patients are actually receiving the high quality care they have a right to expect.

“Unfortunately in this case we found that many of these elements were either absent or inadequate requiring us to take the action we did.”

Fears dog ate poison in Peckham park PECKHAM

RESIDENTS HAVE reported that a dog was fatally poisoned after its owner took it walking through Peckham Rye Park on Saturday.

Users of the East Dulwich Forum took to the website to voice their sympathy for a woman whose spaniel died on

Sunday.

It was said that the dog was “extremely sick” and suffered from vomiting blood and acute kidney damage after ingesting an unknown substance.

Southwark Council told the News that its pest control team had not placed rat poison or any dangerous substance in the park.

environment and public realm, said: “I am saddened to hear about the passing of a resident’s beloved dog and I send my sympathies to them. There’s been some speculation that the dog died of rat poisoning, but our pest control team has confirmed that no traps were left in the area where the dog was poisoned.

“Unfortunately, there are a number of things that can be harmful to animals if ingested, so I strongly advise pet owners to be mindful and try to avoid

their pets from eating anything suspect.”

The Peckham Rye Park Twitter account wrote on Sunday: “WARNING!! Following the tragic death of a local dog due to suspected poisoning. Dog walkers should be extra vigilant in Peckham Rye Park. “[The dog] had been rummaging in undergrowth close to the children's playground, Friday pm & Saturday am.

Fell ill shortly after.”

There were suggestions among the forum users that the dog could have been poisoned after ingesting fungi.

One user said: “It is worth pointing out that it would need a huge dose of warfarin [rat poison] to kill, so quickly, even a quite small dog.

“Rats take some time to die from ingesting it (normally dying from internal haemorrhage). That suggests that it may have been a far quicker acting toxin, or a mixture of toxins.”

Mayor hits new heights

THE MAYOR of Southwark, Kath Whittam, abseiled down 26 storeys of Bermondsey’s Maydew House last week, to raise money for the National Autistic Society and Surrey Docks Farm.

So far more than £1,000 has been raised for charity after it was organised by community regeneration company, Keepmoat, and industrial abseiling company, Avalon Pro. Mayor Whittam led the way and was followed by twenty other fundraisers from Southwark Council, Keepmoat, British Land, Calfordseaden and residents - who were raising money for other charities such as Bede Centre and The Bermondsey Community Kitchen.

Mayor Whittam said: “Thanks everyone who has supported this, it’s much harder than you think!

“In these austere times my charities need as much support as they can get, so here’s hoping the final figure is even higher.”

The fundraising comes as Keepmoat starts work to refurbish Maydew House as part of the programme to regenerate the Abbeyfield estate.

Plans currently include a five storey extension to Maydew house and construction of around 60 new units on the site of the former Bede Centre.

Patrick Warren, Community Impact Manager at Keepmoat, said: ““The

Mayor is incredibly brave and we were all impressed with her descent from the 26th floor.

“We were delighted to be able to welcome her on to site and to help her raise so much money for a great cause.

“We are working with Southwark Council to finalise the plans for the refurbishment of Maydew House and look forward to involving local residents with the next stages of development.”

TOWER BRIDGE will shut to traffic for three months on Saturday, to the dismay of Bermondsey taxi drivers and residents.

The closure is for “essential works” to be carried out on the 122-year-old bridge, which will also see it shut to pedestrians for three weekends.

The plan is a joint venture between the City of London Corporation, which owns the bridge, and TfL. But as the works coincide with the partial closure of Tooley Street and amid the ongoing congestion of Jamaica Road, concerns have been raised over how much it will impact the community.

Abdul, a taxi driver from Bermondsey, said: “It will be absolutely terrible for the local community and cab drivers.

“If there’s an accident in the Rotherhithe tunnel we will have to just go home. Jamaica Road is congested enough as it is. It’s going to be at a standstill.”

During the closure a signed diversion will be in place taking drivers northbound over London Bridge and southbound over Southwark Bridge.

Three London Bus routes that use Tower Bridge (42, 78 and RV1) will be affected.

TfL has put a range of measures to help minimise disruption during works, including: • A free ferry service on the weekends that its closed to pedestrians to help people cross the river • Drivers will not incur the Congestion Charge on the signed diversion routes • And all road works apart from emergency ones will be banned in the area throughout the closure Despite the measures, Jean Davies, Chair of the Bermondsey Street TRA, said that TfL weren’t taking into account

the “elderly residents who live in area who rely on buses to get around”.

The pedestrian closures of the bridge will be between 8am – 10pm on the weekends of November 26-27, December 3-4 and December 10-11.

Tower Bridge was last refurbished in the 1970s and the iconic structure now requires re-decking of the lifting bascules, new expansion joints, waterproofing of the viaduct arches and resurfacing.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, said: “We are pleased that TfL are looking at our suggestions to improve the Rotherhithe Tunnel roundabout and to put in yellow boxes at various junctions.

“However, the closure of Tower Bridge is just going to add more chaos to the existing gridlock and should not have been done until Tooley Street was re-opened and Jamaica Road improved.

“The council and TfL must monitor the impact of this closure very carefully and be prepared to step in if our fears are realised."

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: “The City of London’s decision to close Tower Bridge for this work will avoid the risk of any further unplanned closures for emergency repairs.

“We do understand concerns about this taking place at the same time as Network Rail’s work on Tooley Street.

“However, our analysis has shown that combining the works will make only a small difference in disruption, whereas to do both separately would see road users face disruption continuously until late 2018.”

Chris Hayward, Chairman of the Planning and Transport Committee at the City of London Corporation, said: “We will use this time to repair, refurbish, and upgrade London’s most iconic bridge, which has gone without significant engineering works for more than thirty-five years.

“We recognise that these works may cause some frustration to residents and commuters, but these vital works really do need to take place.”

Demolition of historic red crane would be ‘great loss’

PLANS TO demolish an historic crane would be a “great loss”, according to an archaeological society.

Current plans by developers Hollybrook Homes would see the crane in Odessa Street taken down and recycled into a sculpture to sit by the river, after attempts to include it into the project failed.

The proposals attracted opposition from residents in the area, who started a petition to save the crane in July, which gathered more than 360 signatures.

Originally protected by a “protective covenant” with the Greater London Authority by The London Docklands Development Corporation in 1998, it lost this safeguard in January 2014 under the direction of former London Mayor, Boris Johnson.

Malcolm Tucker from the Greater London Industrial Archaeology Society said: “The red-painted crane is the last of its kind on London’s riverside, where such cranes were once common and a familiar sight. This crane was built by Butters Brothers of Glasgow and erected in Kemp & Collins’ timber yard just after World War Two. It replaced an earlier crane destroyed in the Blitz.

“The Red Crane has become an

appreciated historical feature, while it has grown considerably in archaeological value from the loss of other cranes.

“In December 2014 Southwark’s Cabinet resolved to sell the site for development. That will be a great loss.”

Justin Elcombe, managing director of Hollybrook Homes, said: “We have given careful consideration to the many comments expressed in the last eighteen months by people both for and against the removal of the crane.

“We don’t think the crane is worthy of retention because it is a post war modern electric crane that has little historic context.

Furthermore it is in a very poor state of repair and represents a health and safety hazard.

The regeneration of the site will provide many benefits, including the provision of nineteen high quality affordable homes for local people and a missing section of the Thames River Path.

“It will improve the public realm by providing new landscaped areas and removing the derelict night club. It will also help support local community projects such as a proposal by nearby Surrey Dock Farm for a new classroom and improved visitor facilities. If the crane is retained the scheme will not be able to progress and unfortunately all these benefits would be lost.”

A SEVENTEENTH century Bankside theatre and bear-baiting pit was given listed status this week.

Opening its doors in 1614, The Hope was unique in doubling up as a playhouse and a bear garden.

The first play staged was Ben Jonson's 'Bartholomew Fair', and within the play Jonson makes several references to the dual-purpose of the Hope, such as likening the smell of the playhouse to that of the animals at Smithfield market.

The original intention was to hold animal baiting only on Sundays and Thursdays, with plays in between, however the animal baiting and other entertainment gradually eclipsed the playing. Tension increased between the actors and playhouse owners which finally led to the acting company leaving the Hope in 1617.

By the 1620s the playhouse had reverted to its old name Bear Garden.

Parliament ordered it to close in 1643, however it continued to operate until 1656 during the English Civil War when it was eventually dismantled.

Baiting of bears, bulls and horses by dogs was enormously popular sport for all levels of society in the 16th and 17th centuries, as documented by Samuel Pepys who describes his visits to the Davies Bear Garden in his diaries on at least four occasions from 1666 to 1669.

Five bear gardens were known to have been built in Bankside; by the 17th century the general area including the arenas, kennels and adjoining houses had become known as Bear Gardens, a street name which survives today on Bankside.

Museum Of London Archaeology excavations of the Hope playhouse and bear baiting arena

The Hope was protected by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, on the advice of Historic England.

It will now be added to the National Heritage List for England, to sit alongside the Globe.

Tracey Crouch, Heritage Minister, said: "As we celebrate Shakespeare's great works and global influence on the 400th anniversary of his death, it's important that we also protect and recognise the remains of the playhouses where his and many other fantastic British playwrights' works first came to life on stage.

“I'm delighted that so many sites associated with our nation's strong theatrical heritage will now be protected."

Duncan Wilson, Chief Executive of Historic England, said: "The archaeological remains of the first and last Elizabethan playhouses to be built in London give us fleeting glimpses of a fascinating period in the history of theatre. They are where some of the world's greatest stories were first told and it is wonderful that they remain today, bearing witness to our fascinating past.”

Decision due for huge new performing arts university PECKHAM

The creation of a huge new performing arts university in Peckham was due to be considered by councillors yesterday.

The prestigious Mountview Academy submitted plans earlier this year to expand from its base in Wood Green to a brown-field site called Eagle Wharf, behind Peckham Library.

The new site would have nineteen TV/dance/acting studios, two television studios, a radio studio, a 200-seat theatre and an 80-seat “black box” studio.

The proposed part-three-four-andfive-storey building was designed by Carl Turner Architects.

The Academy would offer undergraduate, masters and foundationlevel qualifications and be available for commercial and community use on weekends and holiday.

The plans also included a roof-top public restaurant and bar. Vehicle access would be from Peckham Hill Street.

Mountview’s Chairman, Vikki Heywood CBE, said: “Mountview will be both a dynamic public building and a thriving and diverse training environment.

Town halls of residence

PECKHAM: Students have now moved into new halls of residents in the historic Southwark Town Hall building in Peckham.

Southwark Council sold the building with planning permission to Alumno Developments in 2014 for £5m.

Construction also saw demolition of the former Theatre Peckham building, which is relocating to Havil Street in Camberwell, and due to open this year.

Its 149 en-suite rooms have gone to Camberwell Arts College students, while a café and gallery for students and the public is being managed by the council in collaboration with the Hotel Elephant community group.

A report written by Southwark’s planning team has said the scheme “complies with the guidance in the conservation area appraisal, and does not appear overly dominant in this sensitive historic context”.

The Planning Committee meeting held to decide whether to approve planning permission for Mountview Academy took place on September 28, after the time this newspaper went to print.

THE WALKING DEAD - ON THE SILVERLOCK!

ROTHERHITHE’S Silverlock Estate was alive with the undead this week as filmmakers shot a new zombie movie.

Cameras rolled to film scenes for Recon-1, a movie about a squad of eight Special Forces soldiers assigned a suicide mission to rescue a scientist from a city ruled by the undead, due out in 2017.

Several scenes filmed on the Silverlock last week saw heavily armed soldiers battle with blood-soaked zombies as local residents looked on bemused.

Keeley Pettengell, a Tissington Court resident said: “You could see all the children watching and trying to work out what was happening.”

Terri Thwaites added: “The kids loved it, especially my son as he loves zombie films.”

Terri recorded the day with lots of photos when, between scenes, the cast made themselves available for the local, somewhat confused, children.

Keeley told the News that having the film crew on the estate created a sense of community: “It got residents out of their houses, which some wouldn't normally do, and everyone was talking to each other like they've known each other a lifetime.”

But not everyone was happy. One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, complained: “No one received letters saying what was going to

happen; all I heard was this screaming and shouting from eight in the morning to ten o’clock at night... It’s not funny when you’ve got people dressed up like that running about!”

Last orders for The Goldsmith

BOROUGH: The Goldsmith Pub and Dining Room closed its doors on Friday, joining a growing list of former boozers in Southwark.

The pub in Southwark Bridge Road closed for the final time and said thank you to all its customers.

In a post to social media, the pub said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all our lovely customers and wonderful

staff. We’ve had a wonderful experience and will miss you all, but we have big plans for the future. Of which we will be keeping you informed as our new venture takes shape.”

Last week the News revealed that Rotherhithe’s The Clipper is facing a new attempt by a developer to have it demolished and turned into flat, while down the road the Orange Bull Sports Bar was on the market with planning permission already granted to be torn down.

Prince at Shard

LONDON BRIDGE: Prince William was at the Shard last week to speak at a Tusk event, to urge people to join a campaign to save elephants and rhinos from the ivory trade.

He said: “When I was born there were one million elephants roaming Africa. By the time my daughter Charlotte was born last year, the numbers of savannah elephants had crashed to just 350,000.

And at the current pace of illegal poaching, when Charlotte turns 25 the African elephant will be gone from the wild.”

KIDS AT Cobourg Primary School in Burgess Park jumped for joy as their teachers gave them first dibs on books in their brand new library.

Teacher Dominic Walker and assistant head Ms Stringer handed ribbon cutting duties to the excited pupils, before special guests from Literacy Tree gave a presentation.

Dominic told the News: “This is the first library at Cobourg - before this was

all just a big attic. Work started at the end of summer last year and we have had a lot of help with decorating from one of our teaching assistants.”

The passage up to the top floor of the school, with views over Burgess Park pond, is emblazoned with painting of

fictional icons like Harry Potter and fantasy creatures. Dominic added: “It’s sensational. I’m excited for all the kids.

Reading meant such a lot to my life when I was young. Now the kids will be able to get the same experiences of learning how to interact with their public libraries.”

Plan to turn garages into entrepreneurial hub get into gear

IT’S ONWARD and upwards for the Pempeople project that is transforming 60 underground garages at a Peckham estate into an entrepreneurial hub.

Last week the deputy London Mayor for regeneration, Jules Pipe, went for a taste of the businesses that will call the Ledbury Estate their home.

A crowdfunding target of £54,000 was reached in August, triggering a £200,000

pledge from the London Mayor’s office.

Another £50,000 from the Old Kent Road estate’s T&RA was fund-matched with a further £50k from Southwark Council.

Nicholas Okwulu, director of the Pempeople social enterprise, told the News: “It’s nice seeing everything coming together – we’re seeing it’s actually going to happen. There’s loads of people who want to set up small enterprises. And with the regeneration of the Old Kent Road, we want local people to compete with companies who are moving in.

New flats plans unveiled

A PLANNING application to transform three buildings in Tower Bridge Road into a mixed use scheme has been submitted.

Working with developers First Base, the plans propose to turn the 0.9 acre site at 151-157 Tower Bridge Road into distinctive “curvilinear building form”, to connect the three buildings and make a walkway linking Bermondsey to the river.

While the refurbishment will reduce the number of residential units from 106 to 69, it is said that the number of “dwellings” will remain the same.

The site currently consists of apartments, a short stay hotel and commercial units.

Earl Arney, Chief Executive of architects Arney Fender Katsalidis, added:

“We are energised by our collaboration with First Base and the design vision we both share for Southwark. 151-157 Tower Bridge Road will be a gorgeous project.

“We are using raw and robust materials to sync the building with the grain of Old Bermondsey, and the addition of an active civic square within the development will unlock green pedestrian linage from St Mary Magdalen Churchyard gardens to City Hall.”

The scheme is also aiming to deliver a 137 bedroom ‘apart hotel’ and more than 10,000sqft of commercial space including co-working, restaurants and cafes.

Barry Jessup, Director at First Base, said: “Our proposals will deliver much needed new homes in a community setting, with a mix of cafes, restaurants and workspace that respond to the needs of local businesses and residents.”

ART AND music lovers gathered in their thousands to see the work of a woman who has created eyepopping stage designs for the likes of Rihanna, The Pet Shop Boys and Kanye West.

Copeland Park – a warehouse behind the Bussey Building in Peckham – was the chosen location for Esmerelda Devlin’s Mirror Experience.

People queued for up to four hours from Wednesday to Sunday last week, with the installation promoted by Chanel and i-D. The tour took visitors who had

travelled the world over to get lost in immersive graphics, an elaborate passage of mirror walls and staircases into cavernous corridors. Each new room was also fragranced with a different perfume.

Esmerelda herself turned up to guide a lucky few through the maze on its opening day.

After years of speculation, the new supermarket opened on August 31.

The council has confirmed that the new foodhall breached several planning conditions before M&S moved in as new tenants, and that “warning letters” have been fired off to those responsible.

The first complaint was that the new kid on the block had been staying open an hour later than permitted – until 11pm. Another was that morning deliveries were being made outside the allocated area, producing a disturbing amount of noise for locals.

Another breach of the rules was the shopfront’s “oversized” and “unauthorised” 84-90 lettering. To top it off, the council launched a “planning enforcement investigation” to discover that the building’s third floor had been built half-a-metre higher than agreed.

East Dulwich ward councillor James Barber said: “It’s amazing. I just

wouldn’t expect this kind of conduct from Marks and Spencer.

“It’s very cavalier of them breaking these rules, like they’re cowboys.”

A Southwark Council spokesperson told the News: “Marks and Spencer is in breach of several planning conditions around opening hours, servicing arrangements and plant noise. This is already being investigated as an Enforcement Case that began earlier this month.

Warning letters have been issued regarding the breaches “The Developer was issued a warning letter and asked to remove the unauthorised signs.”

An M&S spokesperson said: “Being a good neighbour is of the utmost importance to us. We take any feedback on deliveries seriously and are taking action ensure we do not disturb the local community.”

£160m Cancer Centre designed by its patients opens at Guy’s BOROUGH

A NEW £160 million Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital, which was designed by patients, opened this week after years of planning.

The state of the art centre was built with the purpose of making patients’ experience of treatment better, which meant including a lot of natural light, open spaces and moving radiotherapy from the basement to the middle floors.

Outpatient services began on Monday, with chemotherapy treatment set to start next Monday and radiotherapy treatment due to start on November 7, as part of a phased opening.

Dr Majid Kazmi, Clinical Director of Cancer Services at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “It is fantastic to welcome the first patients to our new Cancer Centre. Today is the culmination of more than ten years of planning and working in

partnership with our patients to create a building to transform cancer care.”

The new Cancer Centre at Guy’s brings together most treatment under one roof – previously cancer care was provided in thirteen different locations in eight different buildings on the St Thomas’ and Guy’s sites. It is the first cancer centre in Europe to provide radiotherapy treatment above ground level after patients said this would make a huge difference to them.

Diana Crawshaw, who chairs the Patient Reference Group which has shaped the new Cancer Centre, said: “Patients have been consulted at every stage and no decision has been made without us. Our views have been welcomed, listened to and acted on.

Locating radiotherapy treatment above ground in response to patient feedback is just one of many examples.”

The new Cancer Centre at Guy’s also brings together treatment and research in an Innovation Hub.

Professor Peter Parker, Head of the Division of Cancer Studies at King's College London, said: “Expanding our Experimental Medicine Programme will enable us to grow our capabilities in designing and conducting clinical trials for new treatments. Our vision is for the Innovation Hub to cross-fertilise ideas between researchers and clinicians so that potentially impactful discoveries can be advanced rapidly and successful approaches for one cancer type can be tested quickly in others.”

The charity Dimbleby Cancer Care will provide a range of information and support services for cancer patients and their families in the Cancer Centre’s Welcome Village.

Largely funded by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, the Cancer Centre at Guy’s was made possible by a grant of £25 million from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and a £15 million grant awarded to King’s College

London from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund (managed by the Higher Education Funding Council) for the Innovation Hub. Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity also provided a grant of £1.7 million for an arts programme – with no NHS funds being spent on this aspect of the project.

Philanthropists have already donated £6 million to the new Cancer Centre, including £2 million from Dimbleby Cancer Care.

The arts programme embeds work by five artists into the design of the new centre, which is made up of ‘villages’ relating to treatment areas such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The villages are connected by lifts that immerse visitors in an audio-visual journey from rainforest floor to canopy.

There is also a sculpture at the entrance to the Cancer Centre which is inspired by a Roman boat buried beneath the foundations of the building.

Four fire engines, 21 firefighters and officers attended the fire in the early hours of the morning, which damaged a section of the student’s room.

Crews found a hairdryer plugged in and switched on at the plug but fire investigators have sent the dRyer for further analysis to determine exactly what happened.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We are still investigating this fire to determine the exact circumstances but this is a good opportunity to remind people how important it is to ensure that hairdryers and straighteners are turned off at the plug as well as on the appliance.”

Firefighters have issued top tips for avoiding a 'beauty blaze': Hairdryers, hair tongs and straighteners can get extremely hot, so it’s very important to remember to switch them off and leave them to cool on a heat proof surface. Shaving or make up mirrors should be kept away from direct sunlight, along with any canisters, such as deodorant or hairspray.

Candles need to be placed on a surface that can’t melt or catch fire..

The Brigade was called at 2:44am and the fire was under control at 3:55am.

Fire crews from Dowgate, Old Kent Road, Dockhead and Lambeth fire stations were called to the scene.

Boxes of delights MORE MISSONI homewares were sold in Elephant and Castle than in Harrods for the month of April.

The times they are a-changin’. Leading the way is the Artworks, a village of shipping containers from Amsterdam enjoying a second lease on life as repurposed studios for artists, creatives and restaurateurs.

With over 30 start-up businesses, including a library, yoga studio, radio station, tattoo parlour and a haberdashery, there’s now a waiting list to rent spaces on the Elephant Road site.

The Blackpool native left school at 15 and worked as a landscape garden designer before getting into visual merchandising at a television store. “When I was 24 I moved to London to work as the

store design manager for Dixons tax free –the airport stores, before moving to Tripp luggage to design the luggage departments in Debehnham’s. This was during the boom of low cost travel,” Richard said. “When people are in holiday mode they’re less conscious of what they’re spending, so we’d do things that ignite that holiday mood like the smell of suntan lotion, travel magazines…we’d have air fresheners that smelt of coconut to put people in the holiday mode so they’re more likely to spend.”

Richard’s next career move was to Ikea as the interior design

manager, but after taking voluntary redundancy he designed his Goddaughter’s bedroom -back in 1997- and that was it. His interior design business was born and he hasn’t looked back.

The biggest myth is that interior designers are exclusive to the elite.

“It doesn’t have to be expensive.

There’s interior designers who charge tens of thousands of pounds but I’d rather do lots of smaller rooms,” Richard said. “I have worked with clients who live in social housing on low incomes, for example converting a study into a nursery.” For a single room prices can start at around £1000 for the

design, with fabric starting at £20 per metre. “The smaller the budget the more of a challenge it can be,” he revealed.

Equally, working with more space or larger budgets isn’t just about filling a room. “When people climb up the property ladder, they buy into a lifestyle not just a bigger space,” Richard explained. “Some of my clients have come to me wanting me to recreate one of their friend’s living rooms which I have

designed–sometimes it’s that keeping up with the Jones mentality. But why would you want to live in someone else’s world? A description of someone’s home should be similar to a description of them.”

The Vauxhall local has designed for a number of high profile clients including a Baroness worth a rumoured £33 billion who brings her favourite items of furniture with her from her castle in Scotland

when she’s staying at her house in Hertfordshire, and a number of pop stars whose names Richard couldn’t divulge.

Interior Influences is proving a hit in the Artworks so far. “I’ve had people buy Missoni Home cushions and candles from me just because they’re from Elephant and Castle.

“The majority of our clients are

start-ups who have a product and need some money to take it to market and build a stable product,” designer Emily explained.

“A lot is technology. There’s a lot of accelerators and incubators in London that enable new start-ups and when the start-up world kicked off, around 2011, an ecosystem was born.”

Emily is a designer who won some investment five years ago to create a tech start-up. “We realised what we could add for companies going through the development process,” she said. “We rebranded as Good to Goat to showcase what we have by way of strategic business. Our clients don’t just get a logo, they get conceptualisation of what building a new product is.”

One client Cliqquer came to them with an idea based around the recruitment market place. “I said there’s loads of those, how is yours different? We workshopped it, named it, designed their platform, and they created a concept on how to match company culture with a candidate,” Emily said. “We hold their hands, you’ll get a lot of air time and mentoring and also connections like helping connect with investors.”

There’s currently six members on the Good to Goat team including experts in branding, graphic design, illustration, infographics, strategy, concept and messaging. Among the agency’s clients are Prism London, MassChallenge, the Tab, Network Locum and OS Community.

The company moved in 18 months ago when there were still spare containers and employees have enjoyed watching it grow. “The fact this is here promoting new business is fantastic,” Emily said. “I used to work in the city and in order to grow up we needed something different, to be inspired. We are a bubble, we built our own mini eco system here and we’re fully catered for –there’s shops, restaurants, bars.

Everyone is a friend.”

“We wanted to make s**t and sell it,” Sophie said. Cupcakes and Shht started up four and a half years ago, baking as “naturally” as possible using no artificial colouring, eggs from organic hen sanctuary Hen Nation, organic butter and milk, and using recyclable packaging.

“We both love food. Cait loved cupcakes so we started a market stall in Camden market, which we still have at Kerb every day,” Sophie said. “We didn’t go to school –I mean we have our Food Hygiene and all of that! I worked in retail and hospitality for nine years.

Food is our passion, even in our time off.”

Sophie turned vegan “a while ago”

and began introducing vegan products to their repertoire. Now they bake products that are raw, sugar-free, gluten-free and dairyfree. “We use nuts, fruits, dates. We also have naughty treats but everything we bake is gluten-free with tapioca and buckwheat because you can’t tell the difference,” she explained. “We like being able to accommodate everyone.”

Though they’d had pop-ups in Old Street and market stalls, the duo had never had their own café, a longheld dream. “We needed a bakery but we’ve always wanted a coffee shop,” Sophie said. “Camden is quite touristy and we love it there but it’s nice being here and getting to know our regulars.”

Their best seller is the peanut butter caramel slice. “That’s the healthy option. And from the baked non-vegan range our brownies are killer,” Sophie said.

Sophie and Caitlyn bake fresh every day and are open every day from 9am-6pm.

A quirky take on traditional style, all the pizza varieties are named after girls: the Margarita, Bianca, Olivia, Ruby, Amelia and so on.

The Florence was excellent: fresh,

generous on toppings, high quality and piping hot. The team serve the pizza on fresh salad, which is a welcome, refreshing touch. It also means that because you’ve eaten your greens, it justifies trying the garlic bread: a delicious and buttery crisp flatbread. Service is quick and friendly. Elephantastic is exactly what you want in a pizza place. And if you don’t want to leave the sofa, they’re also available on Deliveroo.

t was so nice to be in a theatre audience where the majority of those in attendance spoke like me, with an accent that is connected to the area it evolved in and not one received through other means, writes Michael Holland...

That anomaly was due to this crowd being there to see Michael Head’s The Greater Game, the true tale of when, 100 years ago, 41 members of Clapton Orient’s staff and players signed up to fight ‘the Hun’ and soon found themselves under fire at The Somme, hence a nice sprinkling of Chelsea Pensioner Red scattered around the terraces, men sporting military ties (The production has been sponsored by the Royal British Legion), the Pearly Queens of Clapton and Hackney, and a good number of Orient supporters.

Sitting in the auditorium before the Greater Game kicked off I heard a familiar voice behind me that has always been there –unseen throughout my own footballwatching career: the distinctive tones of John Motson, up in the back row with FA personnel. This was no doubt an important match.

The lights went down, a cheer went up and we immediately found ourselves in the trenches before the narrative backtracked to show us how these young men got there.

The first half introduces the protagonists and the bond between them, both on and off the pitch, and after half time we are immersed in the horrors of the ‘war to end all wars’ before seeing the aftermath of conflict: men crippled for life, pregnant wives widowed, lives ruined forever.

The Almshouses for the poor 400 years of housing the elderly FOUR HUNDRED years ago this month, Henry Biggs became the first resident to move into the Dulwich Almshouse. Centuries on, the Almshouse is still providing homes and supportive community for its residents. To celebrate its anniversary, local historian Brian Green researched and wrote The History of the Dulwich Almshouse 1616 – 2016, which was published at the beginning of September, writes Alex Yeates…

As the Bible taught the Church to help the poor, it was commonplace for religion to be the first stop for alleviating poverty. But as time passed, a small number of benefactors started to tackle the problem of the “aged poor” by providing almshouses. These provided basic accommodation, where the poor were able to live out their remaining years.

In the fifteenth century the decline of the monasteries took hold, weakening the Church’s ability to provide relief.

This led to the role being taken up by wealthy laypeople who believed doing so would help them get into heaven.

Edward Alleyn, a distinguished figure in Elizabethan theatre and founder of Dulwich College, was one of many who decided to try to relieve the plight of the “indigent elderly”. Having come from a humble beginning and after he had built his Fortune Theatre in Finsbury, he lived with his wife, Joan, near Southwark Cathedral.

When he bought the Manor of Dulwich in 1605 it seemed unlikely that he would set up a charitable foundation of a school and alsmhouses to aid the poor, as he had just retired from a successful stage career and had a reputation as an established property investor. But perhaps through a “reflection on life’s inconsistencies”, he took the dramatic step in 1613 to put a Foundation into action.

Alleyn contracted John Benson of Westminster to build a College which was completed by 1616. He then assembled a staff of four fellows, a Preacher, a Schoolmaster, an Usher and an Organist. Alleyn managed the College himself, assisted by his cousins Thomas and Matthias Alleyn, for ten years. Before his death in 1626 he made instructions on how the enterprise would work without him. In his will he expressed the wish to “spread his benevolence as far as possible” and left instructions that ten almshouses were to be built in the parishes of St Botolph’s and St Saviour’s.

More than a century later the Alleyn estate in Dulwich experienced an increase in income that benefited the Foundation. Better transport links around the area meant travelling distance with the City improved.

evacuated to a nursing home run by an order of Anglican nuns in Findon, Sussex. They returned to Dulwich just as the Blitz started but miraculously remained largely unscathed until 1944, when a V1 bomb caused “massive damage to the Picture Gallery, Old College and Chapel”.

After the war, the expectation of living standards soared, leading to each almshouse committee to try to find ways to improve, but with a lack of

funds. Rising costs meant buildings could only be patched up rather than rebuilt. In the 1970s fire hazards became obvious. This led to a new scheme to allow funds for a more “comprehensive overhaul” and the renaming to the Edward Alleyn House.

In 1995 there was a further major reorganisation of the Foundation’s structure to allow the Dulwich schools greater access to income of the Foundation from the Dulwich Estate. At

that time it also divided three parts of the Foundation to become individual charities: the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Christ’s Chapel and the Dulwich Almshouse Charity.

In 2016 as the 400th anniversary of its foundation is celebrated the trustees still grapple with the problem their counterparts faced before them; how best to care for their elderly residents.

The historic almshouses, now, sadly, fail to meet modern expectations of

housing, however well the building itself is maintained. The trustees have therefore embarked upon a new chapter in its history, by drawing up plans for a new building designed for maximum comfort and security and providing homes for an increased number of needy older people.

SOMETIMES THE opening of a new restaurant creates enough interest for me to cross borders and investigate what everyone is talking about, and so it was that I and Number 1 Son, James, found ourselves in The Brookmill in Deptford, a part of town that has been steadily ascending over several years now, writes Michael Holland...

It is an airy, spacious, well-lit place with lots of pale wooden boards on the floor and a mishmash of furniture in a number of nooks and crannies, as well as in the bar, bringing what was a Victorian pub into the 21st century, as do the craft ales on draught and a well-thought out modern menu.

I began with a Brockley Brewery Pale Ale, which is always good and tastes better being a local brew, while Jim had a pint of Red Stripe as we took our time to peruse the menu.

You can see straightaway that within the confines of a small selection for each course they have ensured that everyone is covered, whether they are vegetarian, pescatarian or carnivore. Me, I like to always have a fish course and a meat course – in any order – so chose

the Tuna Tartare with Macadamia Nuts, Spring Onions, Garlic, Ginger and Radish. It was divine. The fish was unbelievably moist and tender, while the light soy dressing, combined with the garlic and ginger was exquisite. So good, in fact, that I had to finish it off by lifting the bowl up to my mouth to drain off every drop.

Young James had the Confit Lamb Breast with Salsa Verde, Baby Turnips, Onion Rings, Green Beans and he said he too could have licked his plate clean of all the meat juices!

Eliot, who was making sure everything was running smoothly at The Brookmill, spoke to us about future plans for quiz nights, live music, and what could be done with the large function room upstairs and extensive beer garden. There are exciting plans afoot.

After slaking our initial thirsts I decided to try a Rosé with dinner so opted for something from the Cote du Rhone, where they always seem to produce good wine. And I chose well as this was a light, crisp rosé that would go well with almost anything.

James, in preparation for what lay ahead for him - the Brookmill Beef Burger with Cheddar Cheese in a

Brioche Bun and Triple Cooked Chips - went for another Red Stripe.

When our mains arrived Jimboy steamed straight into his with a gusto last witnessed when he came off a prison hunger strike! I, on the other hand, took my time with the Roast Pork Chop, Burnt Apple Purée, Creamed Potato, Shallots and Spring Greens, but with my beady eye catching sight of the offspring’s gorgeous looking triple cooked chips, I had to stop him in his tracks and get a sample off him. Well there was no free sample coming my way so I had to do a deal for some of my side order of Green Beans and Parmesan for a couple of his huge, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside chips.

They were very good, better than my Aspen Fries (chips with truffle oil).

My chop was excellent. The roasting had not dried all the juices from it, and its accompanying vegetables complemented it perfectly.

The burnt apple purée, however, was a stroke of pure genius; it had a tang that lifted the whole dish into another realm.

It was still only 7.30 and already the room seemed to be filling up, and this was a Monday! Good music was playing, leaning heavily towards classic soul, which is never a wrong move in my book, but not everyone was here to eat, some were enjoying a beer at the bar while others ventured out to the garden, though all

were taking pleasure in polite conversation. The Brookmill is a pub where you can talk without being in competition with loud music or noisy customers. At least on a weekday it seems.

The dessert menu did not play too safe, which was admirable - the Crème Brûlée being the most well known of the four - so we agreed to share a Vanilla Pannacotta with Roast White Peaches. The peaches were cooked to a soft texture but where they still had a little bite to them, and this countered the creamy softness of the pannacotta. It was a dessert both full of flavour and refreshing, and topped off a delightful meal nicely.

We enjoyed our time at The Brookmill and plan to return again, maybe at a weekend to see what else they will be putting on for our delectation and enjoyment.

FISHER FC chairman Ben Westmancott has stood down from his role as the head of the supporters’ owned football club.

Westmancott has been at the helm of Fisher since they reformed in 2009, after Fisher Athletic were wound up in the high court, and has championed the ideal of creating a community club in the north of Southwark.

Chief amongst his and the clubs initial aims were to return to their Bermondsey and Rotherhithe heartland which was achieved this summer when the club moved to their new base at St Pauls Sports Ground.

With that primary goal achieved the amiable family man has decided to stand down as club chairman.

He said: "It has been an honour to serve the club over the past seven years and I'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone that has helped in so many ways.

“We set ourselves two objectives, to rebuild the club and to return home. We have delivered on both.

“I am a firm believer in the old adage that what got us here won't take us there, and now is time for a fresh perspective to take the club to the next stage of its new

DULWICH HAMLET spanked in the goals last Saturday as they resoundingly defeated Folkestone Invicta 6-1 at Champion Hill.

The Pink and Blues have made a stuttering start in their latest Ryman Premier Division campaign, but at the weekend they took their chances and dispatched their visitors with some aplomb.

But it was the Kent side who took the lead when Joe Taylor took full advantage of a Michael Chambers error.

But Hamlet responded in resounding fashion and by half-time they were two goals ahead thanks to efforts from Sanchez Ming, Gavin Tomlin and Nyren Clunis.

Lionesses complete Watford double

MILLWALL LIONESSES completed the league double over Watford Ladies after defeating them 2-1 for the second time this campaign.

The two teams met just under a month ago and Millwall edged that encounter. On Sunday two first half goals from Amber Gaylor and Georgie Giddings secured the latest win.

Despite a second half effort from Watford’s Ellie Mason the Lionesses managed to hold on to a much needed

life.

STANSFELD SIDES have enjoyed a free scoring time in their respective leagues in the last seven days.

The Stansfeld side who operate in the First Division of the Southern Counties Football League, under the Eltham Palace moniker, picked up four points in their last two outings.

Last Saturday they drew 2-2 with Orpington with Billy Jolley and Billy Shinners netting the goals that saw pick up a much needed point.

That result came on the back of a 4-2 victory last week when the Bermondsey side overcame Meridian VP, with Shinners and Jolley on the scoresheet again along with a brace of efforts from Harry Gamble.

The Stansfeld first team who play in the Premier Division of the Kent County League picked up three points in their latest game, thanks to a 6-1 thumping of Guru Nanak.

Dominic Karmali and Lennie Wise netted twice for the Southwark side in addition to efforts from Mark McKenna and Henry Sewell.

The news was not so good for the Stansfeld reserve side who play in the Kent County League as they lost 3-0 to Otford United in their latest outing.

THREE BOXERS from Fisher ABC will compete in the London ABA Senior Development Championships finals this weekend.

The last boxer to make it to the regional finals day is Denzil Ntin-Mensah, 21, who came through his semi-final bout at the weekend to join two of his club mates.

SRI LANKAN veteran batsman Kumar Sangakkara has signed up for Surrey Cricket Club for the 2017 season.

The club confirmed this week that the 38-year-old would continue his association with the county side after a successful 2016 season.

Sangakkara scored 1,039 first class runs for Surrey last season as well as being a key member of the oneday and T20 sides at the Kia Oval outfit.

FRED ONYEDINMA will keep trying to get into goal-scoring positions – despite the disappointment of seeing what he thought was a late winner ruled out against Rochdale last weekend.

Onyedinma, who had been on the pitch just two minutes, slotted home from Steve Morison’s cross but his celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

That disappointment was compounded when Ian Henderson scored a 93rdminute penalty to hand the Lions their first league defeat at home since February.

Millwall boss Neil Harris has used Onyedinma as a centre-forward this season, and he got off the mark with a goal against Barnet in the League Cup in August.

Onyedinma has proven his goal-scoring nous before. He scored eight goals on loan at Wycombe in 2014-15, but the fact they came in two different bursts of consecutive games indicates he is a player who thrives when his confidence is high.

The nineteen-year-old attacker admits that is the case, and he wants to make sure

that when he finds himself in a similar attacking position at The Den again the result will be different.

Onyedinma said: “The gaffer said I was offside but it happened so quickly. It’s just something you have to learn from. The next time I have to keep my composure and make sure I’m onside.

“When the ball came I tried not to panic because that’s not what you need. I think I could have done better to keep onside.

“With me it happens naturally. Once I’m through on goal I already have that mindset of ‘goal, goal, goal’. Once you have a doubt and start thinking, ‘I’m through, but I might miss’, that’s when you miss.

“You have to have the confidence to know you’re going to score.

“For someone in my position, once you start scoring you get the adrenaline to keep scoring and you find everything just goes well for you.

“With me, if I get the ball behind I know I’m going to score. When you’re in the box you get excited and just want to finish. Once I start scoring I just keep going, I showed that at Wycombe.

“Every time I got on the pitch I thought I was going to score, you just get that confidence. When I first started there I was playing on the wing but I was kind of cheating by staying up there. But when I

moved up front I scored as well.

“Last season I was more of a midfielder and we would do more long-range shooting. But this season I’ve been with the strikers and we always practise finishing in the box after training.”

Onyedinma also revealed one of those strikers is someone whose game he is trying to emulate.

He explained: “If I were to choose, my game would be more like how Lee Gregory plays, just trying to run behind and cause problems. He scores most of his goals from in the box. I want to try to get in there at the right time.

“You have to build that relationship (with strike partners). It’s not easy because sometimes you don’t know where the ball is going to land. It’s about being proactive, you have to be on your toes and react before the defender.

Millwall’s form hit a rocky patch after a good start to the season, but Onyedinma insisted everyone is pulling in the same direction to try to go one better than last season.

“We have to keep training hard and go out and do it on Saturdays and Tuesdays,” Onyedinma said.

“That’s what the coaches and manager are for, they show us videos and give us feedback. We need to improve on that.

Five minutes later, in the third minute added for stoppages, a cross sailed into Millwall’s box and there appeared to be little danger until Steven Davies nicked the ball away from Sid Nelson and fell when he felt contact from the young defender. Ian Henderson, in front of a couple of hundred of his own fans, sent Jordan Archer the wrong way.

It never should have got to that. Even thoug they fell behind to Callum Camps’ ninth-minute goal Millwall were superior for an hour.

Rochdale, on the other hand, were slow and cumbersome. Centre-back Harrison McGahey was given such a going over

IF YOU’D been at Millwall’s U23 game against Nottingham Forest last week you might at one point have

thought the club’s recruitment department had been guilty of a drastic mismatch.

At 6ft 4ins and about fourteen stone, Rooney certainly has a centre-back’s physique. But it’s his ability on the ball that marks him out as much different from traditional Millwall centre-backs like Sean Dyche or Andy Frampton.

Halfway through the first half against Forest, he flipped the ball over an attacker before collecting it on the other side, flipped it over a second Forest player before then heading it over both players as they converged on him.

It was a moment that in its audacity was far away from the first time he had taken part in his first first-team training session over the summer, when he admitted he had been “timid”.

Plucked from the League of Ireland, this is actually Rooney’s second bite at the professional football cherry. He had trials in England when he was just sixteen, but felt he didn’t do himself justice.

Last season he was more ready and more mature, so much so he actually turned down the Premier League to continue the next phase of his developed with the Millwall “family”.

He explains: “I was going on trial with West Brom in December and there were a few other places that wanted me. Millwall wanted me to go on trial at the start of January and I just said I might as well go. I came here and did the business and they wanted to sign me.

“I had been on trial before. I was at Norwich City and Sheffield Wednesday when I was sixteen but never progressed from them. I was prepared more going at the age of eighteen instead of sixteen.

“I was prepared when I was sixteen but when I got there I was nervous and didn’t play how I could have played.

But when I came over here, because I had been at West Brom and done so well that they asked me back, no matter where I went I had the mentality that I was going to do well.

“West Brom asked me to go back but Millwall had already offered a trial. I liked Millwall more because it’s more close-knit, a family club. West Brom is huge, it’s a good place, but it’s hard to find yourself there. I was dealing with

the U21s there whereas here it was with Neil Harris.

“I met him in January. They told my agent I was getting a deal and then he told my mam and dad. It was huge, there was a family hug. I was delighted with it.”

Rooney says he refined his skill “playing out in the back garden” in west Dublin and joined Malahide United – a club whose pitches you’ll glimpse flying in over the Irish Sea – when he was seventeen. His step-dad, Francois, spotted his son’s ability when Rooney was five, and his coaches with the underage sides encouraged him to develop it.

Malahide is the coastal town Lions midfielder Shaun Williams is from (One of Rooney’s coaches, Sean Hogan, and Williams were in school together), and Rooney admits he hadn’t realised how deep the historical connection was between Millwall and

Irish football. He got advice from Williams and another Irishman, David Forde, during the training camp in Portugal in July, and he also acknowledges that some of his perceptions about the club have changed.

He said: “Willo is a good lad. I was with Fordey a few times when we were in Portugal and he told me to keep my head down, keep working. Willo said the same thing and that’s the only advice I’ll take, to keep working.

“I actually didn’t know how many Irish people had played for Millwall until I came here and I looked up the names. I didn’t know Kenny Cunningham had played here.

“It’s completely different to what people think it is.

“My digs lady (Diane) is a huge Millwall fan, she sits to the right of the dugout. She’s the nicest person you’ll ever meet, very down to earth.

From Malahide, Rooney he moved to St Patrick’s Athletic, a club former Millwall striker Richie Sadlier was involved with after his retirement.

Contractual disputes prompted him to make a switch across the city to rivals Bohemians after he had agreed to sign for Millwall in the summer, and he admits he was nervous about picking up an injury in the interim before he relocated to London.

That previous January he said he had been “thrown in at the deep end” during his trial, marking Alfie Pavey and then Jamie Philpot in an intersquad practice match.

But it wasn’t until the summer that he felt how big a leap in standard it was.

He had played just two senior games for Bohemians, and now found himself up against the likes of Steve Morison.

“The step-up came when I started training with the first team and went away to Portugal,” Rooney says.

“Because I was with Bohs and Pat’s first-teams, 21s wasn’t a step-up, but you could still see differences in how they’re taught to play football.

“It was a lot more detailed, a lot more talking.

“It’s hard marking Moro, he knows what to do. It’s a high intensity. At the start maybe I was a bit timid going into tackles and stuff.

“There’s a split between U23 training and the first team and when you get the call to go into first-team training you have to be ready to train with them.”

“It’s about settling in with the U23s and trying to make my way into the first team. That’s what I want, to play with them” And what’s he looking forward to if and when he makes his competitive first-team debut?

“I like the chant,” he answers. “That gives me shivers. I’ve been to all the home games and I like it a lot.”

AT WHAT point does this become a crisis? Maybe not after ten games

and given how Millwall responded to a bad start last season maybe there is no need for alarm bells yet.

But even the mention of last season is enough to raise concern.

For all the talk of the positive start to this campaign, Millwall are now two points and five places worse off than they were after the same number of games last season.

What has happened since last season that Millwall across all four league divisions only Championship Rotherham have a worse defensive record than the Lions?

It was a question that was put to Millwall boss Neil Harris after this 3-1 defeat and it was a question he admitted he was struggling to find answers to.

This defensive rot arguably set in the moment Byron Webster pulled up with an injury before the playoff final in May. It meant a partnership with Mark Beevers that was the bedrock on which Millwall had built a promotion push was broken up and they have carried the uncertainty into the new season.

Against Barnsley the goals resulted from the failure to defend a routine long ball and pick up runners, the failure to close down the winger, and the failure to defend a corner.

Millwall kept a clean sheet on the opening day of this season, but that was against a poor Oldham side that has only managed five goals in ten games, and the Lions haven’t managed one in the league since.

Harris has spoken repeatedly of getting back to basics yet it is the failure to perform basic defensive duties that is costing them.

It feeds into the feeling that all is not right. Perhaps the collective mentality from a year ago has shifted. Then, Harris had assembled a squad with plenty of players with plenty to prove.

The likes of Beevers, Byron Webster and Lee Gregory had never convinced Lions fans they were the answer. Shane Ferguson joined after a frustrating time at Newcastle United. Steve Morison begged Harris to bring him back. All of them contributed to Millwall’s fourth-place finish. Shaun Williams also needed to convince and moments like his winners against Peterborough and Bury helped him win over doubting supporters.

This season it all seems to have gone a bit stale and no one knows how to put the fizz back into it.

Twelve months ago, Harris could utilise the loan market for that very need. George Saville came in and added a spiky edge. Jed Wallace provided the gold dust and the recruitment of both players was the spark for two separate runs of form that first gave Millwall belief and then hoisted them into the top six where they stayed until May. Pavey back home after frustrating loan spell

AN ANKLE injury hindered Alfie Pavey’s ability to make an impact at Bromley, his boss Neil Harris said.

Pavey, 20, joined Bromley on a threemonth loan deal in August and played seven games for the south London club.

He failed to get on the scoresheet in that time, and started from the bench in two of the last three games.

Pavey returned to the Lions on Sunday and with Aiden O’Brien set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury he could become part of the first-team squad again.

Harris will monitor his progress before deciding the striker’s next move.

Harris said: “Alfie had a good few games before he picked up an ankle knock and was left out. He couldn’t get back in but played Saturday.

“Alfie has had six-and-a-half weeks at Bromley and it was a good learning curve for him. He has gone out and played a few games, come off the bench a few times.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris admitted after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Port Vale on Tuesday night he is struggling to find answers for their poor form.

The Lions conceded three goals for the third successive game as they extended their winless league run to eight games.

Millwall’s form has completely collapsed since their 3-1 win over Chesterfield on August 27, a result

that came after a 2-1 win over Sheffield United and seemed to confirm their thrashing at Peterborough was just a blip.

Harris’ side has now conceded 20 goals in ten games, the secondworst defensive record across all four divisions after Rotherham at the bottom of the Championship.

Harris felt Port Vale’s third goal, when Remie Streete lost his marker Mahlon Romeo to head home, epitomised his side’s problems.

Millwall visit Walsall this weekend, with Harris trying to figure out how to arrest the

worrying slump.

He said: “That’s the question. The players played in big games last year and kept a lot of clean sheets.

“It’s hard to put your finger on it.

Is it form? Is it mentality? Why should it be different to last season?

Is it desire, is it leadership? I can talk to the players about it and work on it on the training ground, but they’ve got to have the passion, they’ve got to have the desire and aggression and professionalism to do their jobs.

“They made changes and we made subs, but I said to the boys there has

to be leadership and communication. Mahlon was marking him and got done for a header, and okay Streete is bigger and stronger, but why are we not adjusting our markers?

“We have to find that leadership in us on the pitch. The disappointing this is we don’t seem to have that organisational skill. And it comes down to strength of character to say even if I’m marking a bigger man…I don’t care if Shane Ferguson is marking a 6ft 5ins centre-half, you don’t let your man score.”
