CHECKS WILL be carried out on all of Southwark’s school buildings in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, the council has confirmed.

Any cladding on local authority school buildings will also be inspected, as well as fire safety measures such as whether the buildings have sprinklers installed. The council will also be seeking reassurance from owners of non-council buildings that the properties are fire safe, whilst local hospitals are also undergoing renewed inspections.

A chance for us all to unite

T

HIS SATURDAY will mark one month since the horrifying attack at London Bridge and around Borough Market and it is heartening to see so much unity as the weeks roll on.

In most people’s living memories the last few weeks are perhaps the most shocking we have experienced, after terror attacks in Manchester we have seen unimaginable brutality on our own streets and north London, and terrifying scenes of the Grenfell Tower inferno in nearby Kensington & Chelsea.

The anger and dismay most of us feel is completely justifiable. But while it is right to feel this, we can see today in article after article the sense of unity that prevails. Be that by people coming together in prayer at Southwark Cathedral, to football fans of all persuasions marching against extremism.

In the aftermath of the attacks those around the London Bridge area are coming together this Saturday for an open house festival with free or discounted entry to some of the great attractions, bars and restaurants that have made this part of our borough a must see for travellers across the globe.

It is also important that local people come out in support. Often the very attractions on our doorstep are not visited by us because we always think ‘I can do that anytime’ or ‘when I have visitors’. So here is your chance to do it for free or very little and join in the unity that we all need at these most troubling of times.

Surely no surgery should close?

T IS concerning that 5,000 people are just being given three weeks to find a new GP due to a surgery closing, even if it is true that there are enough spaces at the other nearby surgeries.

There is little doubt that the strain on GPs across the country is massive and those being turned away from the Grange Road practice will worry that they will be at the end of a very long queue.

Surely if there is plenty of room in the other surgeries and NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group knew that the end was likely with the departure of both partners in May last year, they should have gradually moved patients into other places?

Apart for anything else, the administrative strain will not be welcomed, trying to accommodate all these patients in just three weeks. And if there is a way to keep Grange Road practice going now that it has improved to a good status, surely that would help ease the burden on other areas, if Bermondsey is not already filled to capacity?

Off-duty Rotherhithe inspector given commendation for rushing to the rescue of heart attack victim in Victoria

AN OFF-duty Rotherhithe police officer whose quick actions saved the life of a man suffering a heart attack on the Tube has been honoured at an awards ceremony.

Inspector Jim Cole, who also leads the safer neighbourhood team in Rotherhithe, was awarded a Royal Humane Society Certificate of Commendation by Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey during a ceremony on Monday.

Inspector Cole, who is based at Peckham police station, was off duty and travelling on the Tube at about 11pm on February 6 last year when the train ground to a halt in Victoria.

He heard a woman calling for help and then saw a woman whose husband was slumped against her.

Inspector Cole went to help and found that the man, aged in his 60s, was gasping for breath and his lips were turning blue.

He put the man on the floor and checked for vital signs but didn’t find any and so began to give CPR. He asked a member of the public to pull the communication cord to get help, and another to ask the station staff for a defibrillator.

When the defibrillator arrived Inspector Cole, with the help of a member of public, ripped off the

man’s shirt and applied the pads.

One shock was delivered followed by further CPR. The man began to breathe and Inspector Cole put him in the recovery position.

When the paramedics arrived Inspector Cole handed the casualty over.

The next day, he visited the man in St Thomas’ Hospital and found he had undergone surgery and had a pacemaker and a number of stents fitted.

Southwark Borough Commander Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Messinger said: "Inspector Cole’s quick actions helped save the life of a member of public.

“His actions prove that officers are never off duty and they are always there looking out for members of the community."

Government needs to ‘pull its finger out’ over terror pay-outs

MP says Treasury is yet to classify London Bridge attack as ‘terrorism’

THE GOVERNMENT needs to “pull its finger out” as businesses caught up in the London Bridge attack are still awaiting insurance pay outs because the Treasury is yet to officially declare the incident “terrorism”, MP Neil Coyle said this week.

Small, independent Borough Market traders and businesses surrounding London Bridge have been left in limbo for weeks because insurance providers are unable to pay up until Chancellor Philip Hammond officially states the June 3 attack was a terrorist incident.

Mr Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, blasted insurance companies for not reflecting the community’s defiant spirit in the wake of the attack.

He also claimed the Government was willing to stand by and allow businesses and jobs to be lost.

“These are big sums for what are small, independent businesses and they don’t want to be named but one is basically going under,” he told the News.

School fair to raise money for library

ROTHERHITHE: A primary school is set to host a summer fair to raise money for a library revamp.

Peter Hills Church of England Primary School, in Beatson Walk, will open its doors for a summer fair from 3pm to 7pm on Friday, June 30.

Entry to the event will be free, but wristbands for entry to an inflatable arena featuring an obstacle course, slide, bouncy castle and gladiator arena will cost £7.

A raffle will be held on the day, with prizes courtesy of Oliver Jaques Estate Agents. The first prize will be a Nintendo Switch, the second will be £100 in cash, and the third will be a Bluetooth speaker. There will also be a bar, a barbecue, and stalls from local businesses.

All money raised will go towards redeveloping the school library.

sharpen up on this; it’s all very well to keep saying that terrorists cannot win as ministers do, but the Government seems to be willing to let businesses and jobs be lost.”

Mr Coyle added that he believed

insurance pay outs should cover businesses for the entire eleven-day period Borough Market was closed.

“I do think if you have an eightminute terror attack on a Saturday night that the business interruption clause should cover from when the business is shut,” he said.

“The market was shut for more than a week – not because the attack was going on for a week, but because the police needed to close it for their investigation.

“It seems against the spirit of what we saw happen on the night with the response from the emergency services – the only people who seem unwilling to reflect that spirit are the insurance companies and we cannot allow any business to go under or jobs to be lost.”

The recently re-elected MP said he hoped to speak during Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday to invite Theresa May to meet market traders and businesses to see what support was needed to prevent any jobs or businesses being lost.

The News approached the Treasury for a comment on deadline day, but received no response at the time of going to press.

Council to apply for new Aylesbury CPO

WALWORTH: The council has made another application for a compulsory purchase order (CPO) to move the remaining seven leaseholders from Phase One of the Aylesbury Estate.

Seven leaseholders complained that the money the council has offered for their flats would not be enough to buy another property in the area, and that they would be forced out.

Southwark Council’s first application to compulsorily purchase leaseholders’ homes was made in 2014, but was rejected by the government in September last year. This was followed by a court challenge which only concluded earlier this year when the government surrendered and agreed to allow Southwark the right to apply again for a CPO. Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, has said that the council has reached an agreement with 98 per cent of residents in phase one of the development – but that negotiations are ongoing with the remaining seven leaseholders.

"We remain steadfastly committed to delivering nearly 1,000 new homes on the first two major phases of the Aylesbury Estate, including nearly 400 social rent homes, and 200 low cost ownership homes,” he said in a statement to the News.

“The regeneration will also deliver for local people a new library, new GP health centre, public square and extra care housing for some of our most vulnerable residents. In order to deliver these new homes we need to demolish the old blocks which were poorly designed and constructed, and are past the end of their life.

“However, we may need to use our CPO powers to deliver the homes and other benefits for local residents, which is why are re-making this application."

A second public inquiry into the CPO is likely to be held later this year.

AN ELDERLY male pedestrian has been left with potentially lifechanging injuries after being

involved in a collision with a lorry.

The man, believed to be in his 70s, suffered leg injuries following a collision with a lorry near Elephant and Castle Tube station at about 2.23pm on Monday, June 26.

Police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene and the man was taken to hospital. A police spokesman said his condition was described as potentially life-changing but not lifethreatening. There were no arrests.

Paramedics were called to The Arch Climbing Wall on Drummond Road at about 7.26pm on Tuesday, June 26, following reports of “a fall from height”. A woman was treated for a leg and arm injury and taken to a major trauma centre.

Fred Stone, director of The Arch Climbing Wall, said in a statement: “I can confirm that an incident occurred resulting in injury. Our staff are trained to deal with such unfortunate situations and responded professionally. We hope that the person involved is now on their way to a swift and full recovery.

“Above all we would like to thank the London HEMS [Helicopter Emergency Medical Service] and the NHS for their tireless and essential service.”

DYING PUP DUMPED OUTSIDE PET SHOP RSPCA hunt for man on CCTV

THE RSPCA is hunting for a man who dumped a dying puppy outside the Pets at Home store in Old Kent Road.

CCTV footage shows a man with dark hair, and dressed in a dark top and bottoms, leaving a dirty car carrier just outside the front door of the store shortly before 11.30am on Thursday, June 8.

The cream papillon-type dog, thought to be around four to sixmonths-old, was taken into the store where there was a Vets4Pets and was found to be suffering from parvovirus.

The store contacted the RSPCA and an inspector attended but the dog was put to sleep after it showed neurological signs and deteriorated even with treatment.

Caroline Allen, RSPCA London veterinary director, said: “Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease with a high mortality rate among untreated dogs.

“Vets in London are warning of a new, more virulent strain.

“Parvovirus is prevented through regular vaccination, but unfortunately it is making a comeback due to lower levels of vaccination and the fact it is often seen in dogs from puppy farms.”

Inspector Callum Isitt added: “It is really sad to think that someone has dumped this poor dying puppy, especially as he was clearly suffering so severely from parvo.

“Fortunately there were CCTV cameras in the area and we have been provided with the footage of the man dumping the carrier outside the front doors.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have seen this man in the vicinity, or who knows anything about this puppy or who is responsible for abandoning him.

“People cannot get away with just dumping a dying animal.

“Anyone with information can call me in complete confidence on our inspector’s appeal line on 0300 123 8018.”

Residents pack into safety meeting

THE COUNCIL will carry out checks on all of Southwark’s school buildings in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Checks will be carried out on any cladding on local authority school buildings, as well as fire safety measures such as whether the buildings have sprinklers installed.

The council will also be seeking reassurance from owners of noncouncil buildings that the properties are fire safe.

King’s College Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals will also have tests carried out on the cladding of their buildings and fire wardens have been posted in occupied areas.

Tests are currently being carried out on cladding from some of King’s College Hospital’s buildings and the monitoring of occupied areas has been stepped up.

“The safety of our patients, visitors and staff is of paramount importance,” said a spokesperson for the hospital.

“We have responded to NHS [Improvement’s] request for information including our current fire safety procedures and details of all our buildings.

“The trust has fire wardens in all occupied areas and we are satisfied that our current procedures are robust. We are awaiting further detail on intrusive panel testing and until such time as those tests have been completed we have increased the monitoring of occupied areas.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has also checked the cladding on all of its tall buildings, at both hospital and community sites, to make sure it is made of non-combustible material.

“We are reassured and do not believe that similar materials have been used to those used in Grenfell Tower,” a spokesperson told the News.

“Additionally, we have instigated additional fire wardens and fire

safety checks and reminded all staff of fire safety and prevention measures, and to remain extra vigilant.”

The trust was contacted by NHS Improvement (NHSI) over the weekend and asked to submit samples of exterior cladding from Guy’s Tower to be tested by the central government team. Guy’s and St Thomas’ has also requested a formal fire brigade inspection, as advised by NHSI.

A panel made up of Southwark Fire Commander Neil Chisholm and the council’s fire safety manager David Rowson, strategic director of housing and modernisation Gerri Scott, cabinet member for housing Cllr Stephanie Cryan, and head of engineering Tony Hunter answered questions from the crowd.

Questions were asked about whether the council would look at the safety of young families, elderly people and people with disabilities living in tower blocks who would have to get down numerous flights of stairs to get to safety if a fire broke out.

Concerns were also raised about whether the fire doors in all 174 of the council’s tower blocks were fitted properly and one resident asked whether the fire brigade would inspect blue netting currently covering the block where he lived while work was carried out.

Commander Chisholm reassured residents that the fire brigade would carry out checks for any concerns they had, such as cracks in buildings.

“I’ve been in the fire brigade

for 27 years and my colleague to my left [David Rowson] has been for 30 years and we’ve never seen anything like that [the Grenfell fire],” he added.

“Our policy is still stay in your flat and we will come and get you.”

Cllr Cryan admitted that “everything is on the table after Grenfell”.

“If anything is to come out of this, there has to be a whole review of building regulations,” she said.

“I’m a parent myself and I have to say the last ten days I’ve been reviewing me and my children and what we would do if there was a fire. We are all scared and worried at the moment.

“The stay put option works and is the best option for you.

“If anyone has a concern about a particular floor, give me the number and we will go and check to try to give you that piece of mind and security.”

The council reassured residents that they would be kept up to date with correspondence both online and via hard copies of letters posted out to them.

Results of tests carried out on four low-rises expected in a fortnight

THE RESULTS of tests carried out on the cladding of four low-rise council blocks are expected to be known within a fortnight.

Following the Grenfell Tower fire, Southwark Council carried out thorough checks of its 174 tower blocks, which found that none had combustible cladding. However, the council identified some cladding in four of its lower-rise blocks which it decided to

investigate.

The results of the tests are expected to be known within the next two weeks, the News understands.

In the meantime, the council has written to residents to reassure them that their buildings comply fully with current building regulations and that the checks are being carried out as a precaution.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said: “I have written to residents to reassure them that we have carried out thorough

checks of our 174 tower blocks and none of them have combustible cladding. I have also instructed officers to carry out a full review of our fire safety strategy, including a new look at our sprinkler policy in light of the awful tragedy at Grenfell Tower.”

A total of 79 people are feared dead after a blaze destroyed 151 homes in the Grenfell Tower block and nearby.

CAMBERWELL: Three student nurses from King’s have received awards to recognise their outstanding work, writes Emma Snaith...

The Cavell Nurses’ Trust presented the students with their awards at a prestigious ceremony held at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in central London on Thursday, June 22.

Lily Parham, Katherine Siobhan Pearson and Marina Down were honoured for their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work in their studies. All three students were offered funding to put towards a travel placement of their choice, further to develop their nursing and midwifery skills.

Cavell Nurses’ Trust provides support to nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants facing personal or financial hardship.

The charity was founded in 1917 in memory of the British nurse Edith Cavell, after she helped 200 Allied soldiers reach freedom from German-occupied Belgium.

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital volunteers have spoken about the role they played in helping the hospital respond to major incidents that have hit London.

The hospital, a Major Trauma Centre, was involved in treating patients from the Westminster Bridge attack, London Bridge and Borough attacks and the Grenfell Tower blaze.

Volunteers were on hand to help, by providing emotional and practical support to families and patients, managing enquiries about donations and distributing items that had been donated.

Volunteer Angela Ingman, of East Dulwich, helped to reunite patients with their families the days after the Grenfell fire.

“There was an area set up in the hospital for families and friends looking for their loved ones. I helped serve tea and coffee to people who were waiting there for information.

They were still shell-shocked from what had happened,” said the 69year-old.

She added: “There was a group of doctors, nurses, chaplains, paediatricians and psychologists in the room with me.”

“We all worked together as a team to take the names of people who had arrived and then crossed-checked them with patients on the wards who were well enough to talk, and managed to reunite people.”

“Volunteering at King’s is lovely.

The people I help are often worried and anxious, and if I can ease that in any way it’s time well spent,” she said.

Petula Storey, Head of Volunteering at King’s said: “I am proud of the volunteers who have provided support during the recent incidents.

They have gone above and beyond their normal role and made such a difference to the patients and their families.”

King’s is now hoping to recruit more over 50s to volunteer in its Emergency Department, after being awarded a grant by charity Nesta.

London Bridge attractions to throw open doors to honour community spirit We Love London Bridge event will see businesses offer free or reduced-price entry to public and emergency services

VENUES AND attractions in London Bridge are to pay homage to the emergency services and first responders with an open house festival day.

The We Love London Bridge event will see 23 businesses open their doors on Saturday, July 1, in honour of London’s first responders after the June 3 terror attack.

The event will also raise money for the Red Cross UK Solitary Fund, which supports victims of terror attacks.

Local attractions, including The London Bridge Experience, Southwark Cathedral, the Golden Hinde, and the Clink Prison Museum will offer free or reduced entry to both members of the emergency services and the public.

Musicians and performers have pledged their support, with entertainment expected to take place from 12pm.

A variety of music acts will perform in the venues in and around Borough High Street, including the Southwark Tavern, The Mudlark, The Barrowboy and Banker, The Ship, The Wheatsheaf, The Market Porter, St Christopher’s Inn and the Slug and Lettuce.

‘Service of Hope’ for community Photos: Southwark Cathedral

A SERVICE of Hope for the community was held at Southwark Cathedral following the London Bridge terror attack, writes Chiara Giordano...

The service on Friday, June 23, was organised for those affected locally and followed the National Service of Hope held a week earlier for first responders, survivors and the families of those who died in the attack on June 3.

The Sub Dean and Pastor, The Revd Canon Michael Rawson, welcomed those gathered at the cathedral and spoke of the Archbishop’s words at the national service, in which he said that the terrible violence experienced had made the community more united.

The Bishop of Woolwich, The Rt Revd Dr Woyin Karowei Dorgu, led the service and read a message from the Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun.

He also led an act of remembrance and commitment with leaders of other faiths.

The Cathedral School choir sang ‘Make me a channel of your peace’ and the Borough Market Choir sang ‘Lean on me’. The Revd Canon Steve Chalke, founder of the charity Oasis and Ecumenical Canon of Southwark Cathedral, gave a sermon in which he said the service was one of hope – but that, for some, the recollection of the events was hard as people had died and lives had been changed.

He went on to say that it was a moment to pause and reflect and consider how we would live in the light of all that had happened.

Canon Michael Rawson said: “We are pleased to have been able to offer this service of hope to the local community, as it seeks to recover and rebuild following the events of the evening of June 3.

“We hope that the candles which have been lit here today can be a sign of hope for the future, reminding us all that light will overcome darkness.”

Locals invited to Songs of Praise

THE BBC’s Songs of Praise is holding a special edition of the programme at Southwark Cathedral to mark the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.

Local people are invited to attend the event on Monday, July 3 to pay tribute to the victims.

‘Our nursery is outstanding!’

A BERMONDSEY nursery is celebrating its second ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rating in a row.

During a visit to Kintore Way Nursery School, in Grange Road, inspectors found the nursery

continued to be outstanding following its previous outstanding rating in September 2013.

Inspectors found the nursery had an “exciting” curriculum that matched the needs and interests of all the children and had “lots of opportunities for real-life experiences both in and outside of school”.

They also reported that staff were

“highly motivated and fully committed to the school and children” which had created a “culture of trust and mutual respect”.

The inspection report highlighted Kintore Way’s work to share best practice with other schools through a soft federation and by providing support to partner schools.

Adoption and work on FGM singled out for praise

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S adoption services and work tackling female genital mutilation have been commended by the education watchdog.

Ofsted rated the council’s services for children families as ‘good’ in its latest report. This puts Southwark in the top 28 per cent of the 146 local authorities inspected so far.

Inspectors were particularly impressed with the council’s adoptions services, which they found to be ‘outstanding’ – and its work addressing female genital mutilation was described as “particularly strong”.

Southwark was also commended for its strong work helping young people at risk of other issues such as honourbased violence, child sexual exploitation, involvement with gangs and knife crime, and homelessness.

Inspectors reported seeing examples of “high-quality” work with young people facing risks from gangs.

And they praised sensitive community engagement with at-risk communities and social workers addressing cultural sensitivities carefully, while remaining risk and child focused.

The report highlighted the strength of the engagement across health, schools, the voluntary sector, and all the many agencies that work in partnership to keep children safe in

Southwark.

Commenting on the outcome of the inspection, Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children and schools, said: “I am delighted to see recognition of the monumental efforts of our social workers, foster carers, adopters, and all of those who work tirelessly for the protection, and the future of the borough’s most vulnerable young people.

“We all have a part to play in being ambitious for children and this report makes clear the commitment and leadership in Southwark to ensure every child is protected from harm and every young person is set on the path to achievement, fulfilment and happiness.”

Pupils’ sky high music lesson

PUPILS FROM an Elephant and Castle primary school had a music lesson with a difference last week, when they got the chance to learn the guitar - on the London Eye.

Children from St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School were given the lesson by Yamaha Music London to

celebrate Make Music Day. They took to the sky on Wednesday, June 21, and completed the lesson during just one rotation of the Eye. The children learnt the correct way to hold a guitar and how to master the essential three chords that form the basis of most songs.

At the end of the flight they joined together for a performance to demonstrate their new found guitar skills.

MILLWALL AND West Ham supporters were among thousands of football fans who put club rivalries aside for a march against extremism in London last weekend.

An estimated 10,000 people made their way from St Paul’s to London Bridge in a march organised by Football Lads Alliance, a group which started on Facebook and now has more than 30,000 members.

Lions and Hammers fans were photographed together placing their club colours on London Bridge, where on June 3 three jihadi terrorists ploughed a van into pedestrians before launching a stabbing rampage in nearby Borough Market, killing eight.

Millwall supporter Roy Larner made international headlines for fighting off the attackers, and on Saturday fans from a number of London clubs and around the country came together for United Against Extremism.

Millwall season-ticket holder Henry Morgan, 35, a secondary school teacher, was one of those present, and he explained why he took part.

“I heard they had re-opened the Barrow Boy & Banker so went with a friend in solidarity for London Bridge,” he said.

“There were two West Ham Fans there, and one was from Football Lads Alliance.

“When you meet West Ham fans there is always an edge, but he said, ‘I’m going to buy you a drink, we need to unite against this’. That’s such a powerful message.

Irish dancer Maisie, 11, makes it into world championships ROTHERHITHE

AN ELEVEN-year-old Rotherhithe girl has qualified for a place at the 2018 World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow.

Maisie Ryan won the spot after placing 9th at the highly competitive Scottish Nationals World Qualifiers held in Motherwell.

The World Championships will see Maisie competing with dancers from 26 different countries. Over 14,500 dancers and supporters are expected to attend.

The young dancer’s achievement follows hot on the heels of her success in winning three titles in the last two months. She was awarded 3rd place at the European Championships in Spain and crowned the U11 Champion twice at

the Solent Feis, Southampton and the McRoibin Feis, Rotherham.

Maisie only started to take lessons in Irish dancing at the age of seven at the Deborah Whelan Dance School in East Dulwich. She made quick progress under the tuition of Deborah Whelan, a former Irish dancing World Champion and Lord of the Dance member.

Maisie’s mum, Katie Boyd, said: “Maisie is absolutely over the moon that she’s secured a place at the World Championships. She trains five days a week, for three or four hours a night, so she’s glad all the hard work is paying off.”

“Even though Maisie sometimes misses out on things like parties for training, she loves it....She’ll do more lessons and workshops and some fitness sessions to prepare for the World Championships.”

Tall buildings to be considered on ‘case-by-case’ basis according to new draft proposal

RESIDENTS HAVE raised concerns over the council’s ability to rein in developers seeking to build tower blocks, after the latest draft New Southwark Plan showed far fewer height restriction rules.

Under the latest draft of the plan, the council has removed twelve points of regulation present in the 2015 draft and replaced them with one point.

Rather than setting a particular height for a building to be considered tall, the council now proposes that taller buildings should be compared to other buildings surrounding them on a case-by-case basis.

The new plan, which sets out planning policies for each area of the borough, includes a point stating development in Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Camberwell, and Peckham must “provide as many homes as possible while respecting the local character of the area”.

“There may be opportunities for taller buildings on key development sites in appropriate locations,” it adds.

In contrast, the 2015 draft included a rule that buildings above a height of 30 metres, or 25 metres in the Thames Policy Area, must “provide a new, functional public

space that is proportionate in size to the height and size of the proposed building”.

The regulations also included points on how tall buildings had to make “a positive and considered contribution to the London skyline and landscape” and should “avoid harmful environmental impacts including wind shear, overshadowing and solar glare”.

Environmental campaigner Donnachadh McCarthy, who was a Southwark Lib Dem councillor from 1994-98, and participated in Unitary Development Plan development and implementation in Southwark for over twelve years, told the News that it would mean “the end of democratic planning in Southwark because no one will have any right to contest anything”.

“This is extraordinary,” Donnachadh, who is also a columnist for the News, said.

“Building these tower blocks is what we were doing in the 1970s.

“We should not be building these tall skyscrapers when we have seen from Grenfell that the fire brigade cannot get ladders up them to rescue people.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said one of the only options to address the housing crisis in Southwark was to build upwards and that the taller a proposed building, the more public benefits

the council would look for.

“The national housing crisis requires all of us to think about how we meet the need for housing of all types, and in a relatively small and dense borough like Southwark, one of the only options we have to build large numbers of homes is to build upwards,” he said.

“However, taller buildings should be of exceptional design quality and provide real benefits for local people.

“In the new plan, rather than having an arbitrary height for a building to be considered tall, we are instead proposing that the taller buildings should be compared to other buildings around them with the intention that this leads to better quality design, more homes, and more benefits for local people.

“In general, the higher the building the more public benefits we would be looking for. We want to know what people think which is why we have consulted on this proposal.”

PATIENTS AT a Bermondsey GP surgery, which had 5,000 people on its books, were given just three weeks to find a new practice after learning it was to close.

The NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) wrote to patients registered at the Grange Road Practice on June 9, notifying them that the surgery would close tomorrow, June 30.

The partners of the surgery, which had about 5,000 patients registered, resigned and retired within a short period of each other and, despite the surgery turning things around during its latest inspection to be rated ‘good’, the decision was made that it would close.

It was rated ‘inadequate’ in a Care Quality Commission inspection in November, 2016, but then was rated ‘good’ when it was visited again in August, 2016.

Ade Lasaki – who had been registered at the surgery for more than

thirteen years and chair of the patients’ participation group – said he was concerned about how little notice patients were given.

“I feel concerned about it for me and the other people as there was no notice of this,” said the 75-year-old, a former South Bermondsey ward councillor.

“They had a good report and we were hoping they would turn it around.

“I like that GP surgery – I’ve been using it since 2003.

“I’ve spoken to one or two other patients about this and they are not happy about it.

“We want to know why it’s been closed – I think it’s for financial reasons.”

A spokesperson for NHS Southwark CCG told the News that they would always aim to give patients as much notice as possible and that in this case they were able to give three weeks.

The spokesperson said: “Following the resignation and retirement of the partners at Grange Road Practice in May 2016, NHS Southwark CCG and NHS England made a temporary arrangement with Nexus Health

Group to continue to provide GP services to patients at the practice until a permanent solution could be found.

“Temporary arrangements like this are not unusual following unexpected circumstances.

“In this case the two GPs responsible for the contract resigned and retired within a very short space of time.

“During the period of the temporary arrangements, a re-inspection of the practice by the Care Quality Commission revealed improvements in services at the Grange Road Practice.

“The CCG has assessed all the possible options for the future of the practice.

“The outcome of that assessment was a decision to ask patients to register at nearby practices, which are located within one mile of Grange Road Practice and have capacity to take on new patients.”

Nexus Health Group, the current caretaker, has been working closely with the CCG to identify vulnerable patients who may need support to register with a new practice.

A TALENTED team of Southwark riders were crowned the London Youth Games BMX champions once again this year.

The reigning champions claimed three victories out of a possible eleven on June 18 after narrowly beating Ealing and Hackney on the day.

Members of Peckham BMX Club were selected to represent the borough at the annual youth sporting event which took place at the refurbished BMX track in Brockwell Park.

Among those who took part were Danny-Jake Monforte, Dylan Lewis, Lamin Akerele, Elijah Banton, Chris and

Joshua Gayle, Cody Canns, Malakai Callender, Dylan Drummond, Cayden and Chanel Fowler, Dexter Gambe, Hugo Giruzcynski, and Daniel Alvarez.

Also taking part on the day were Kaydon James, Oscar Gayle, Finn Ogbe, Theodore and Izaiah Smith, Keavon Sharpe, Jay Teal Simpson, Meshach Thomas, Shani Harris-Sherwood, Eboni Lennon, Maleek Sithanen, Sumir Patel, Theodore Peterkin, and Kevin Asbaum.

The London Youth Games is Europe's largest youth sports festival.

It is now a season of events taking place over nine months including both school and community competitions across 30 different sports.

The competitions are part of the national School Games Programme.

DULWICH HAMLET lost one of its oldest supporters last week when the Camberwell-born fan passed away aged 88.

John Stephens was a loyal supporter of the Champion Hill side since 1937 and witnessed a range of iconic moments and matches in the club’s history.

Most notably, Mr Stephens, who grew up opposite the old cinema in Camberwell, saw the boys in pink and blue score their last ever FA Amateur Cup win in 1937.

He was also in the terraces to see the Nigerian football team take to the field barefoot in 1949 and was also one of the 27,000 to attend the Hamlet’s biggest post-War attended match.

and the 1950s,” said Mishi Morath, Community Liaison Representative on the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee. “It was always wonderful to hear the anecdotes from someone who’d actually seem them playing,” he said.

After relocating to Andover in 1967, Mr Stephens took a brief hiatus from Champion Hill, but began returning to watch matches in the 1990s.

He continued to travel in for the occasional match with his son Cliff until earlier this year, when his failing health made it too difficult.

The devout fan, who had Parkinson’s and dementia in his

later years, will be dressed in his pink and blue scarf during the funeral service next week.

“He was a typical Dulwich fan from the old days. When you move from south London, football is where your heart is, you can’t change that,” said Mishi.

“He was a quiet and caring person,” said son Cliff, who is the third generation of Hamlet supporters in the family. “He had quite a dry sense of humour.”

The family are encouraging wellwishers to make a donation to Dementia UK. The funeral service will be held in Andover on Monday, July 3.

CLASSICAL MUSIC fans will have the chance to watch the famous BBC Proms at some unlikely locations this summer, as the concert series is leaving the Royal Albert Hall to be held in venues in London Bridge, Peckham and Bankside.

From orchestral and chamber music at the multi-storey car park in Peckham, choral music at Southwark Cathedral and experimental music at the Tate Modern, the concerts will bring classical music to the locations.

The ‘Proms at…’ series will also travel to other London locations in Whitechapel and Sloane Square as well as Hull. The series was launched last year to help further the mission of the founder-conductor of the Proms, Henry Wood, to bring outstanding classical music to the widest possible audience.

It'll never happen again. Before these people, there wasn't really a home grown Reggae scene. I'd love for people to come along and support it.”

But the Bermondsey Carnival isn't all about music - there's plenty more going on in the park on the day, Saturday, July 1.

Internationally renowned Kinetika Bloco will be puttting on a parade; the Rumble in the Jumble, a huge jumble sale, is returning; and the funfair will also be back - plenty to keep you entertained from 12pm to 8pm.

AS ONE of the original members of The Specials, Neville Staple was one of the pioneers of the ‘Two Tone’ movement.

Too Much Too Young and Ghost Town are some of their greatest hits, which have survived the test of time.

The band eventually split and morphed

into Fun Boy Three and enjoyed another string of hits.

Neville went on to form his own band and released the acclaimed album The Rude Boy Returns. He is still in demand on the global Ska scene, touring the world later this year to promote the new album, Return Of Judge Roughneck.

6.20pm - 'The King of UK Reggae', Dennis Bovell AS A songwriter, musician, producer and engineer Dennis Bovell has earned himself the reputation of being Britain’s top Reggae maestro.

Dennis began his career giving the UK its own style of reggae, with his first

band Matumbi and followed by becoming the architect of Lovers Rock.

In recent years his influence has been immense and has worked in the studio for artists including Joss Stone, Boy George, Arcade Fire and Sade.

'It's going to be a banging show'

Bassist Philip Poleon, who formed Indika in the early 2000s with promoter Beresford Bassa Hall as a backing band for artists touring the UK and Europe, said Bermondsey could expect some “banging songs” on July 1.

“It’s going to be a banging show,” said Poleon, who is currently the bassist for Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s band The Upsetters.

“We started off supporting and

felt privileged so to be [supporting] the headliner is great, it’s fantastic.

We started doing something last year called Indika and Friends and this year we’ll be playing with them. We get our inspiration from them.

“When we first played there [Bermondsey Carnival] we were basically playing covers like a backing band but the only time we do that now is with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. This time you are going to get some banging songs; we’re

going to be playing Monkey Man [The Specials] and some stuff from the new album.”

Poleon, who was born in Dulwich and has lived in Bermondsey for 25 years, said playing as the headline act at the carnival was “like a bit of a dream come true”.

“I used to sign on on Albion Street and I used to think it would be a nice place to play a gig and I thought ‘I hope I get to play here one day’ because after doing all this radio stuff you are still going to be

relatively unknown,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour and we can’t thank Russell Dryden and Phil Burkett enough.” Musicians performing in the band at the carnival will be Noel Tapper on drums, Philip Poleon on bass, Henry Zebby on keyboard, Jerry Lyons on guitar, Meggumme Mesaku on saxophone, Laura on trombone, and Paul Benji on percussion.

Poleon said the band had been rehearsing for four weeks to make sure it presented a “dynamic show”.

Indika’s set will be in memory of Dudley Brown and Levi Natty who have both sadly passed away.

Have your say on proposed changes to NHS prescriptions in Southwark

NHS Southwark CCG is asking for patients' views on whether some medicines which are available over the counter without a prescription, medicines for malaria prevention and selected travel vaccinations, should no longer be prescribed by local GPs.

It is consulting on proposed changes which would mean GPs would no longer prescribe selected over-the-counter medicines, malaria prevention medicines for travel and selected travel vaccines.

CCG Chair and local GP, Dr Jonty Heaversedge, said: "The changes we would like to bring in, in relation to medicines for malaria and selected travel vaccines, will put us in line with national policy. Also, under

Southwark's Pharmacy First scheme, many of the over-thecounter medicines would still be available free of charge to people who are exempt from prescription charges.

"If you live in Southwark or are registered with a Southwark GP, we'd like to hear what you think.

We are taking views from patients, staff and interested parties and will use the feedback you give us to help us make our decision on this in the autumn. If you may be affected by these proposals, or would like to make your views known, I urge you to complete our survey to get your voice heard."

Travel vaccinations included in the proposal would still be available from GP practices at a charge, or patients could be given a private prescription to obtain vaccinations elsewhere, such as a private travel clinic.

Residents invited to find out about plans for local health and care services The local NHS is holding a series of events for the public to hear about health and care services locally and across south east London.

The ideas to be discussed at the events are part of Our Healthier South East London – the sustainability and transformation plan for Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark – which aims to help people lead healthier, longer lives and ensure the NHS makes the best use of the money available.

We want as many residents as possible to come along, find out about the plans and discuss what this will mean for local services.

The health and care issues we are looking at include: how we can improve community care and care outside hospital; how different parts of the health and care system can work better together to give people the care they need; how we can best meet the rising demand for services from a growing and ageing population and respond to the financial pressures this places on the NHS; and crucially, what more can we do to stop people becoming unwell.

Growing at full speed UNE IS one of the most fragrant months; full of flowery scents.

And we have reached the summer solstice (longest day) which arrived on 21st June - daylight hours are now at maximum length.

It is generally warm but there were unseasonal cool and windy spells with torrential downpours at the start of June.

Humid conditions mean everything is growing at full speed - grass needs cutting fortnightly, weeds are coming up so quickly you can almost see them growing! Regular work is needed in the garden or it is hard to keep control.

To get the best from roses a continued routine of care is needed this depends on the types grown but there are some basic rules; to ensure strong blooms feed every three weeks through the summer, water in dry spells and deadhead regularly. Watch for pests and diseases and treat accordingly. Pruning is tricky and usually carried out in winter. Lightly trim old garden roses; for modern bush types including miniatures remove two thirds of growth before March.

Treatment of modern shrub and climbing roses, ramblers and species rose also depends on the individual variety but are usually only lightly trimmed.

Honeysuckle is in flower; with its strange segmented petals and gorgeous fragrance- so noticeable on warm summer evenings. Mock orange (Philadelphus) has pure white blooms and a subtle spicy perfume. Jasmine is producing masses of little star shaped sweetly scented white flowers.

Lavender is out with dense blue spikes of aromatic flowers (other colours include pale mauve, pink or white blooms). At the start of June small round flowers with yellow filaments appear on the Lime tree (Linden) these pack a heady and intoxicating scent around solstice time. Other notable seasonal flowers (unscented) reaching their peak are St John’s wort recognisable by its cheerful bright yellow blooms and the showy perennial Lupin.

To slow moisture loss from the soil during the summer months a layer of mulch can be spread over flowerbeds, in window boxes and around plants grown in tubs and pots. Various materials can be used depending on the type of area - Coir (peat substitute), semi rotted garden leaves or straw all help the soil retain moisture. There are also various types of mulch including bark available at garden centres (water and weed thoroughly before applying).

Give Roy Larner the home he deserves

I WAS disgusted to read in last week's news that the Lion of London Roy Larner has been put into a hostel by Southwark council, ‘Hero Roy out of hospital... and into a hotel’, (Southwark News, June 22, 2017).

One of my proud achievements as a councillor for Southwark was working with ex Cllr Capstick in putting forward a motion making it council policy for war veterans returning home from conflict who, if they were from Southwark, or had links with the borough, they would be prioritised for housing.

Roy Larner is no different. Roy Larner did not ask to be on the frontline, but found himself on it facing terror and being stabbed at least eight times and slashed all over his body.

He saved countless lives including children, by putting others first, defending his territory and his country.

How does the council repay him? Well Cllr Cryan says ‘we are assisting Roy with housing'.

Assisting - and giving - Roy the housing he desperately needs are two very different things.

Come on Cllr Cryan, you can do better than that!

Give Roy our hero the respect he has earned and deserves, exceptional circumstances for an exceptional man.

NHS running on fumes

AS LEADING doctors from across the UK gather this week for the annual BMA conference in Bournemouth, the government must listen to the concerns of the medical profession as the chair of the BMA warns that the government is running the NHS on “nothing but fumes”.

Right across South London, health and social care services are at breaking point as ministers have continually ignored pleas from the profession about the impact that underinvestment and poor workforce planning were having on the level of patient care being provided.

The public share these concerns with a recent BMA survey revealing that almost seven in ten people felt the NHS was headed in the “wrong direction” and the figures showing that dissatisfaction with the NHS has almost doubled since 2015.

With the UK spending less than leading European economies on health care, the NHS is left in a vulnerable position, with waiting times rising, patient care suffering and staff working under increasingly difficult circumstances.

The government have the choice to improve the NHS to the level that patient’s deserve. They must do so before it heads even further in the wrong direction.

Why are we picking up the bill for town hall?

I WAS pleased to read Owen Sheppard's item about the firedamaged Walworth town-hall: ‘Fire-ravaged Town-Hall could be turned into an arts venue.’

(Southwark News, June 22, 2017).

The sad story leaves a couple of questions unanswered.

Southwark council staff are required to check for full indemnity cover when commissioning work on our listed buildings.

The costs of repair should be picked up by the company that caused the damage in April 2013.

We have allotment space for hire

WE ARE Springfield Lodge, a Salvation Army Lifehouse, part of the Southwark Homelessness network.

Our objective is to assist homeless people aged 16-21 years to achieve independent living in their own accommodation. We offer support in by working with the young person, supporting them to grow individually, rather than simply trying to find them a place to live.

At the back of our building we have a large garden area which has become overgrown, and residents, ex-residents, staff and the local community have come together to help clear this area and begin to prepare it for an allotment.

We have a volunteer working on a small plot which will involve the residents growing their own vegetables to then cook and eat. The rest of the space is being prepared so that we can invite green-fingered people to hire out our space so they can grow their own vegetables. We have 2 4x4 foot plots that are being prepared and another 4 4x4foot that need some extra work. We want to see the garden used and enjoyed.

The hire costs will then go towards helping us in our aim to support the young people to learn to live independently.

The ground needs some preparation and we are welcoming people who are willing to help do this and then they can choose to hire it to grow their own crops. The garden is in a quiet area away from the main building through a secure gate. There is secure parking on site and the garden is next to a bungalow where there are tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge and toilet. The garden is north facing and gets a lot of sun and a soil test has shown the ground to be neutral. There is also a water supply with a hose and we are looking to build a composting area out of old pallets.

N SOUTHWARK, we are actively helping at least 5,500 patients to lower their risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

They are being supported to change lifestyle habits which could lead to them developing the condition.

The patients have been identified as having a high risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

Local GPs are then referring them onto the short term Walking Away from Diabetes programme as part of the Healthier You National Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP).

For nine months, they are guided through how to change behaviour to significantly reduce their chances of getting Type 2 diabetes. Patients are advised on how to eat well, move more, and permanently change their lifestyles in a friendly and supportive group environment.

Diabetes is one of the UK’s biggest health crises, and it’s on the rise. Some 4.5 million people in the UK are living with diabetes. Its impact and complications can be devastating, causing blindness, amputations, even early death.

However, we are encouraged that we are already making a difference to the lives of these patients we are already helping in Southwark. However, we suspect there are many more who already have Type 2 Diabetes, or have a high risk of developing it, and don’t realise.

One of the biggest risk factors is being overweight, although age, ethnicity and family history can also have an impact.

If you are concerned you might be at risk, it is vital that you get checked out; make no mistake, diabetes is a serious condition, but there are things you can do to help manage it and avoid developing serious complications.

The author of a novel about the famous Durrell family has revealed they once lived in a house in Dulwich, writes Chiara Giordano...

The Durrells are best known for their time spent living on the Greek island of Corfu for four years in the 1930s.

The family’s experience was documented in Gerald Durrell’s three autobiographical books –My Family and Other Animals; Birds, Beasts, and Relatives; and The Garden of Gods – which have recently been turned into a television drama by ITV. But author Michael Haag, who knew Gerald’s brother, Lawrence (Larry) Durrell, has revealed the family lived in a house at 43 Alleyn Park in Dulwich for a time before the move to Corfu.

In his book, The Durrells of Corfu, Haag includes details of how Louisa Durrell moved her children – Larry, Leslie, Margo, and Gerald – from India to England after her civil engineer husband Lawrence died in 1928.

One of her sons, Leslie, had already been living in England for a year, where he attended Dulwich College.

“The oldest children – Margo and Leslie – were away at school all the time so the mother was in this big house, which is still there today, and they had a servant,” said Haag, 73.

“Larry was at St Olave’s School near Tower Bridge when he came to England in 1923 and he boarded in Hillsborough Road, off Dulwich Grove, before he went off to Canterbury.

“The building still stands between the London Mayor’s building and Tower Bridge but has been converted into smart flats.”

Haag explained that at the time when the Durrells lived there, the house in Dulwich was in Surrey rather than London.

“I think it was rather fashionable at that time and it was in Surrey, it wasn’t part of London, and I think it was a little more countrified,” he said. “A lot of the names in south London are identical to names in India because when they British lived in places in the Himalayas etc. they gave places names after places here.

“I think people were coming back over and liked to be close to the Capital and that’s why.”

The family remained living at the house in Dulwich until about 1930 when they moved to the Queens Hotel, in Upper Norwood.

Haag met Larry in the early 1980s when he was publishing a book about Alexandria and had asked the Durrell family member

to write an introduction.

“I wrote to him and we struck up a relationship,” said Haag. “I got to know members of his family and travelled to the south of France and met him there and became more and more interested and now I’m writing his biography.”

The Durrells of Corfu can be bought in most bookshops, including Waterstones.

“It was the Waterstones book of the month during May and for six months running it was the best book in the Times Bestseller List and has been in the top ten in the Sunday Times,” Haag added.

• To work as a flexible team member in the day to day care and education of children aged 6 months to rising 5s.

• To communicate sensitively and effectively with children, parents and staff using a good standard of written and spoken English.

• To ensure that you share in the delivery of the EYFS statutory and non- statutory guidance in line with Ofsted and the Local Education Authority where appropriate.

• To contribute to the daily planning, monitoring, evaluation and development of nursery practice of the Bosco Nursery and ensure that the EYFS, Health and Safety and Safeguarding requirements are embedded in planning, delivery and practice • To build good working relationships with parents and to be approachable, friendly and able to communicate effectively at all times

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will show commitment and enthusiasm for pre-school education and care, The candidate should have the relevant experience of working with young children and should also be suitably qualified according to OFSTED regulations.

Suitable qualifications include: Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People’s Workforce or equivalent.

Southwark Council is preparing a new plan for the Old Kent Road and surrounding area. The plan will guide and manage new development and growth in the area over the next 20 years. The plan aims to create a new high street environment for the Old Kent Road, with significant public transport improvements supported by mixed use development behind the road. This will incorporate around 20,000 new homes, including affordable homes, new jobs, community facilities and green spaces. The plan includes the potential for extending the Bakerloo Line from Elephant and Castle towards Lewisham with two new stations along the Old Kent Road. The plan will be used to make planning decisions in the area and to coordinate and deliver the regeneration strategy.

The draft Old Kent Road AAP: New and Amended Preferred Option Policies proposes amendments to previously proposed draft policies and sites which have been prepared following consultation responses to the draft plan received in the consultation from June to November 2016.

Fisher are close to being able to field two squads at under-7 and under-8 level after training for the youngsters started in mid-May. Last week, a team of budding young talent took part in the Glebe FC Summer Tournament.

Although they didn’t win, some of the kids – who were aged between five and eight – were playing competitive football for the first time as they made their debuts in the famous black-andwhite strip.

Haughney, 38, will again square off with his rival this Saturday night when the pair collide at the Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey for the chance to claim the recently vacated regional lightmiddleweight title.

The Bermondsey postman was last in action back in April when he narrowly missed out on getting the decision against Cannon following an epic encounter, after which Haughney was immediately gunning for a re-match.

MILLWALL LIONESSES have secured their Spring Series jointtop scorer Ella Rutherford on a new two-year deal.

Rutherford, an England under-17 international, scored three times in six games as the Lionesses finished their spring campaign on an eight-game unbeaten league run to finish third in the table.

“It’s great to sign a contract with the club that I’ve been at for the past six years,” Rutherford said.

“This is what I’ve been working towards, trying to gain a regular place in the first team and get as much experience as I can.”

Lionesses boss Lee Burch added: “Ella’s really shown what she’s about this Spring Series and we’re excited about what she can do next season.

Thrilling finale as Munawar helps Dulwich to winning draw

DULWICH TWICE recovered from unpromising positions to achieve a winning draw off the last ball in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match at home to Oxted & Limpsfield last weekend.

Dulwich put their opponents in to bat, and Leon Sealy and Matt Wright kept Stuart Fletcher under a tight rein while skipper Simon Jackson scored more freely at the other end. Fletcher had scored just eight runs off 34 balls when he was dropped off a straightforward catch to mid-off, which would have given Wright a wicket on debut.

The pair had added 83 off 17.1 overs when Kamran Munawar bowled Fletcher for 34, off 63 balls. Munawar and skipper Alex Gledhill then imposed such restraint that only 20 runs came off the next ten

overs for the loss of three more wickets. In that time the next three batsmen faced 49 balls between them for 13 runs, starving their captain of the strike to such an extent that he faced just eleven balls in that time, off which he scored six. He did add 38 for the fifth wicket with Ross Powell, who was bowled by Salaar Waqar for 20, and thirteen for the sixth with Isaac Miller.

Sealy returned to have Jackson caught behind for 71 (off 82 balls). Veteran Gordon Boxshall joined Miller with the score on 154-6 after 40.1 overs, but tight bowling and judicious field placing kept them to eleven runs off 5.4 overs before Miller was run out for fourteen off 35 balls.

Ned Lack then obliged with 20 off fifteen balls before being bowled by Waqar. Munawar returned to take the

ninth wicket, but Boxshall then hit thirteen off the next four balls to set up the declaration on 206-9 after 51 overs.

Munawar finished with 3-39 off nine overs, Gledhill 2-48 off thirteen and Waqar 2-32 off ten, while keeper Will Bancroft picked up three catches.

Dulwich were left with 49 overs to get the runs, but only thirteen runs came off the first thirteen overs for the loss of three wickets, with Ed Stolle, Kristian Williman and Matt Balch facing 66 balls between them for just ten runs.

Nick Hudson then made 35 off 27 balls, dominating a fourth wicket partnership of 45 in 6.5 overs with Henry Hazlewood.

His dismissal was followed by Hazlewood in the next over for eleven, and Bancroft fell four overs later having scored just a single.

At 74-6 after 25 overs an assault on the victory target seemed unlikely, but Waqar and Sealy had other ideas.

Waqar had already reached fifteen at a run a ball, and Sealy played himself in carefully, scoring just two off his first twelve balls, before smashing four huge sixes. The partnership reached 50 after ten overs and 100 after 20 to whittle the target down to 33 for victory or 24 for the winning draw off the last four overs.

They had taken their partnership to 109 in 21.3 overs when Jackson had Sealy caught on the boundary for 46, made off 60 balls. Waqar was bowled in the next over for 79 – his second half century of the season – having faced 87 balls. They had both recorded their highest scores for Dulwich.

Munawar and Gledhill thus found

themselves together at 191-8 with sixteen needed for victory off the last over, or seven for the winning draw. In a tense finale, six runs came off the first five balls, leaving Munawar to face the last ball.

With the field brought in to save the single, he drove through them for four to reach 201 and claim an extra batting point along with the winning draw.

Dulwich gained ten points from the match, against seven for their opponents.

They remain in ninth place, but are now just one point behind Epsom. Next week they have their third successive home game when they welcome Old Rutlishians, who are currently fourth in the table.

Saville: ‘I want to replicate legend Cahill’ EXCLUSIVE

GEORGE SAVILLE has set his sights on emulating Millwall club legend Tim Cahill after completing his move from Wolves this week.

Saville, 24, said he was “delighted” to have signed a three-year deal with the Lions after two previous loan spells at the club.

Cahill made his debut for Millwall in 1998 after leaving his native Australia to try to forge a career as a professional in England and went on to play 251 times and score 57 times for the club before a £1.5million move to Everton in 2004.

Saville showed his own goal-scoring potential at Wolves after returning to the club after his second loan spell with Millwall in 2015-16. He scored five times in the final thirteen games of that season as Wolves finished fourteenth under Kenny Jackett.

Explaining the background to his move this week, Saville said “a lot of boxes were ticked” by Millwall.

And after his two previous brief spells with club, he feels he now has the allround game to achieve the same level of success as Cahill.

“I think I suit Millwall with my work ethic, tackling ability and box-to-box play,” Saville said. “I know what it takes to be a good midfielder here.

“It’s nice to be here permanently now as well.

“You see legends here over the years. I want to replicate someone like Tim Cahill, a strong, solid midfielder that the fans like, and I think I’ve got the qualities to do that.

“Goals are bonuses. If I can chip in with a few, help the strikers out, that would be great.

“I felt like this was always an option, I’ve always had a good time here. I think I’m suited to here and I did well here before.

“It was an option given how fond I was of the club, and how, I think, the manager and the club were of me.

“It’s a good football club. It’s very simple, but simple works, if that makes sense. I know what I need to do to be a good player here. I like the work ethic of the club, there’s a good structure, it’s very settled and there’s a great group of lads here.

“So a lot of boxes were ticked for me. It didn’t take me long to make up my mind.

I was happy because I thought it was a good opportunity for me, and for the football club, to play in the Championship this year.”

Saville played 30 times for Wolves last season, but yet another change of manager this summer – a fourth in four seasons – influenced his decision to leave the Midlands club.

The midfielder admitted once Millwall made it known they wanted to sign him on a permanent basis there was nowhere else he saw his future.

And he was pleased the deal was concluded before the first day of preseason training this week.

“It was after the boys got promoted, there were ongoing conversations from about a week or so after that,” Saville said, explaining when he first heard of Millwall’s interest.

“It took a couple of weeks and it was good to wrap it up before the start of preseason so I could get in here from day one.

“It’s no secret that it was very stop-start

for me at Wolves. It’s a great football club and I had a good time there. I had four managers while I was there, a new manager has just come in.

“I felt it was the right time for me to leave for a new challenge.

“I don’t think there was anything else on the table, but that was maybe mine and my agent’s decision because of how keen Millwall were and how keen we were on Millwall. I don’t think we needed to look elsewhere.

“I’m back here now and I’m delighted.”

Saville joins a club that is one of the favourites to go straight back down. Steve Morison admitted after the League One play-off final win over Bradford that he would take fourth-last, an understandable ambition given the sheer financial power of some of the clubs they will compete with this season.

Wolves are just one example of how difficult it is to make an impact in the top half of the Championship table: they spent over £30million on players last season but

could only finish fifteenth.

Huddersfield’s outlay, on the other hand, was just £1.8million – though they did make good use of the loan market, signing players from Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea – yet they won promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs.

And Saville isn’t setting any limits on what Millwall can achieve on their Championship return.

He said: “We can finish anywhere we want to. We haven’t got the money other clubs have and it’s obviously a very competitive league.

It’s up to us and all we can do is give ourselves the best chance by working hard, showing a good ethic, good organisation and team spirit.

“We’ve got a very good group of lads, and manager and management. I don’t see why we can’t do well next season.”

Jed Wallace: ‘It’s nice to see the boss repaying the people he trusts’

JED WALLACE was thankful after his permanent transfer from Wolves to Millwall – for

Steve Morison’s “big size elevens”.

Morison scored the winning goal in the League One play-off final against Bradford in May to secure a 1-0 win and promotion to the Championship.

It is unlikely Millwall would have been able to entice Wallace to join them permanently had they missed out on going up.

Wallace always stressed that the Championship was where he wanted to play, but he would have been left facing an uncertain future at Wolves, where injuries and struggles with form restricted him to just 25 games in two seasons.

But once the Lions claimed their Wembley victory Wallace was convinced a permanent deal would go through after two previous successful loan spells.

“It was always if Millwall got promoted then 90 per cent I was going to sign here,” he said. “In my head it was 100 per cent, I just had to tick the boxes for the club and play well.

“I said to my family this week what a relief it was after [the play-off final]. Otherwise I would have had to go back to Wolves and it would have been all over the place with all the other lads, trying to get flogged.

“Luckily Moro’s big size elevens have got me here, close to my family and, genuinely, a really good group of friends. I just really like it here.

“It’s easy for some players when they go on loan to just treat it like that. I never did that, it was always a club I wanted to play for and luckily now it’s worked out.”

Wallace insisted that the financial aspect of any agreement was secondary to regular first-team football.

“There are always different ways of looking at things,” he said. “I moved from Portsmouth to Wolves and my wages went up a lot, but I wasn’t happy because I wasn’t playing.

“Over two years I realised that wages are the least important part of it. If you’re playing football and enjoying it and improving then that’s the most important thing.

“There was a point at Wolves when I would have taken half the money to be playing every week rather than being paid and sitting in the stand. The last two years there were frustrating but thankfully that’s out of the way now and I can hopefully look forward to playing 40 games this season.”

Millwall announced the deal on Monday, part of a double swoop on Wolves, with George Savile also signing a three-year contract.

Both players had twice been on loan at Millwall, and their captures continues a recruitment trend of boss Neil Harris signing players he knows he can trust and can handle the demands of Lions supporters.

He explained: “I was playing at Portsmouth every week and getting eaten when we were getting relegated from League One. “I look at Portsmouth and Millwall as being very similar, both working-men clubs where you go and run your heart out and if you do that then the fans will be having you.

“I played over 100 games with Portsmouth before I went to Wolves, so I understood the pressures of football. Wolves is a big club as well and every time I got the chance to play I knew I had to play out of my skin or I wouldn’t play the next game.

“So the pressure is always there in football. We had that pressure on us at Wembley and we’ll have it at Forest away and Ipswich at home, every game will be a massive game.

“That’s especially true in modern-day football when everything is so reactive. [Jose] Mourinho went fifteen games unbeaten but because they drew eight of them he’s under pressure. You can lose two games in a row and suddenly everyone is doubting the squad, which was the case here last season. That’s the nature of football now.

“You can’t really look past the next game and the most important thing for me was to play football, which didn’t happen at Wolves.”

The permanent switch to Millwall ticked another box, with Wallace now closer to his family home.

Saville also admitted moving back down south was a factor in his decision to join the Lions.

“Me and George are from Camberley and Millwall have always been an attractive club to us,” Wallace said. “One, it’s a good place to play your football and it’s a club that should always be in the Championship.

Two, it’s an hour from home, so it’s perfect.

“I know Sav came here before and really enjoyed it. I spoke to Sav a bit but he had a year left at Wolves.

“I said to him, ‘it’s alright mate, I’ll come on loan again to League One and get promoted and you can just come and jump on the Championship bandwagon, no need to do Oldham away, that’s fine!’

“He’s a good lad and he knows the boys. It’s probably testament to the manager that he brings in people he knows and trusts.

There’s not much loyalty in football anymore so it’s nice to see the manager is repaying people he trusts.”

MILLWALL WOULD be signing the best right-back in League One last season if they can complete a deal for Conor McLaughlin, according to Neil Harris.

McLaughlin is out of contract after five years at Fleetwood Town and has spoken to Millwall about a move to south London where he would get the chance to play Championship football after the Cod Army missed out in the playoffs last season.

McLaughlin, 25, was named in the League One team of the season for 2016-17 – alongside another Millwall recruit this summer, leftsided defender James Meredith, and Lee Gregory.

McLaughlin is a Northern Ireland international team-mate of Lions winger Shane Ferguson. The pair started the first game of Euro 2016 against Poland in France.

Former Preston defender McLaughlin was offered a new deal earlier in June but that was withdrawn after the defender made it clear he wanted to play Championship football.

And Fleetwood boss Uwe Rosler recently admitted McLaughlin “totally deserves this opportunity on

the back of his outstanding performances over time for our football club”.

McLaughlin played in Northern Ireland’s 1-0 World Cup qualifier win over Azerbaijan on June 10, and is currently on his honeymoon.

Millwall expect to announce the deal after he returns to England.

“We spoke to Conor’s representative,” Harris said. “Conor has shown a real interest to want to come and we certainly need competition in the right-back position.

“What I will say is Conor was the best right-back in the division last year, in my opinion.

with Mahlon [Romeo], with probably losing Shaun Cummings, he’s the type of player who is at a good age and the type that we are looking for.”

Meanwhile, Harris said Millwall would move on to the next target if they can’t agree a fee with Reading for centre-back Jake Cooper.

“We’ve told Reading we want to sign him, we’ve made it clear.

“He’s another player who was outstanding last year, he’s also a good age and knows what we’re about.

“We want to have a discussion with Reading on it. If he’s not available then I think we’re a centreback short so we would have to look elsewhere.”

There was some doubt last week whether Onyedinma would be present on Monday, but Harris said he returned from the summer break in “really good shape”.

Onyedinma, 20, has so far chosen not to sign a new deal.

Harris is meeting his representatives again this week and is optimistic, despite the protracted nature of the situation, that a positive outcome can be reached.

“Fred has been in, things are still ongoing and still a little bit slow, but Fred has shown his desire to want to be here by coming in [Monday], that’s key for me,” Harris said.

“I had a really good chat with Fred [Monday morning] and I’m meeting his representatives this week to try to get to the bottom of it and find a solution.

“I’ve now sat with Fred twice in the last three weeks and he started the conversation by saying he loves it here, he wants to be here.

“It’s about finding a sensible solution. In football some contracts get done a year before they’re due to expire, some go to the last moment.

“There is no right or wrong way to do business in the modern day.

“People are different, some people are happy and a bit more laidback. Some have wives and kids so need to know what they’re doing, where their future is.

“Some are quite happy just getting on with it and I’m learning that all the time as a manager about my players.

“Fred’s come back in in really good shape and buzzing, and that’s a good sign.”
