Surely 21 council homes can be guaranteed?

T

HE COUNCIL’S flagship pledge to build 10,000 new council homes is ambitious and to many critics unachievable, so the Labour administration not guaranteeing a mere 21 residents a new home when knocking theirs down is playing right into the cynics’ hands.

These council residents in Edmonton Court in Rotherhithe have been told that when their 21 homes are demolished they cannot be promised new flats on a development being built on the estate’s Renforth Street car park.

To build a new development specifically under the 10,000 new homes banner and simultaneously dislodge 21 council tenants on an existing estate, just yards away, is paradoxical in the extreme.

How can residents really believe that the 10,000 new homes pledges can be won when they can’t reassure 21 residents of their future?

The massive turmoil of being decanted from your home without any certainty of where you are going to end up cannot be underestimated, especially for people like 90-year-old Eric Paule-Drysdale, who has lived on the estate for 40 odd years.

This is nothing on the scale of previous decanting projects like the Heygate regeneration and more recently the Aylesbury Estate. If we are to meet the 10,000 new homes target in Southwark in the next 30 years to combat London’s widening housing crisis, then modest projects like this should be done easily otherwise people will have little confidence that the main project and this bold election pledge will ever be meet.

Break it down for leaseholders

T

HE VERY thought of having a £46,000 bill land through your letterbox is terrifying.

But this is a startling reality for approximately twenty leaseholders living at Limes Walk in Nunhead. They have been presented with this bill from the council to repair the roof of the two-block estate, and to make matters work they have been given no real breakdown of how this figure has been reached.

This is not the first time that leaseholders have been left in the dark by the council. Leaseholders are not rolling in cash, despite property prices going up, and whether you agree or disagree with the right-to-buy council homes, no one should be treated in such a way.

The council has a duty to maintain its properties and many leaseholders argue that major works are often carried out after years of neglect. The council says it will meet with residents soon to let them know how their chosen contractor came to that price, but surely there should be a transparent itemised billing system before sending out such huge bills to ordinary working families?

Residents hit out at partygoers who left litter strewn across park - including a still cooking BBQ!

RESIDENTS HAVE hit out at litterbugs who left a Bermondsey park covered in rubbish, including a BBQ full of food, which was still cooking.

Bemused walkers and sunbathers in King’s Stairs Gardens stumbled upon the meat feast atop a still lit barbeque, surrounding by heaps of rubbish and empty beer crates. The

pop-up chefs are said to have been playing loud music while they enjoyed their drinks too.

Malcolm Balen, who found the leftovers, told the News: “The BBQ was still smoking and the sausages were still cooking!

“BBQs are apparently popping up more and more. The site was cleared

by Quadron later that morning.

Although you can't see it in the pictures, there was a fair scattering of cream chargers on the ground, as

used with balloons to get a legal high.

“We were out but apparently there was a loud music system going.

They obviously took that with them, unlike the barbecue.”

Gary Glover, of Friends of Southwark Park, said that a little bit of education would help with tackling the litterbugs.

He said: “We haven’t had such an issue in Southwark Park with litter pickups happening twice a day, but

the way those people left the garden was terrible and out of order.

“It was disgusting the way they treated it.

“I think the wardens when they are on duty should hand out leaflets telling people to clean up after themselves.”

He added: “The little disposable barbeques can sit on the ground and burn the grass, so it wouldn’t be bad to hand out some leaflets for some education.”

‘Teach about FGM in schools’ - report

FEMALE GENITAL mutilation should be taught about in the borough’s schools, and a confidential phone line set up, a new report recommends.

A report commissioned by Southwark Council’s scrutiny subcommittee, suggests Southwark is likely to have the highest number of FGM victims in England and Wales.

Its recommendations include: “integrating teaching FGM as part of the PSHE curriculum [and] ensure schools Safeguarding Leads understand FGM and how to protect girls.”

Another of several recommendations was to create a “confidential phone line” and a “safeguarding alert icon on school computer networks”.

The report suggests Southwark is likely to have the highest number of FGM victims due to the borough’s high proportion of first or second generation migrant women from countries where FGM is most prevalent, like Somalia, Siera Leone and Nigeria.

The report’s findings also coincided with the publication of new data on London FGM cases, collected by the NHS. Its findings showed that Southwark was the London borough which had the second highest number

of newly-recorded FGM cases between April 2015 and March 2016.

Councillor Victoria Mills, cabinet member for children and schools, said: “We know many of Southwark’s residents have links to countries where FGM is practised, and the council and its partners must do all we can to challenge perceptions and encourage reporting.

“Earlier this year Southwark’s Children’s and Adults Safeguarding Boards held a major conference on FGM, bringing together the council, NHS, police, schools, local faith groups, and other community groups to discuss our joint approach to combatting this brutal crime and to launch a new and detailed guidance document.

“A communications action plan is planned in the Autumn to raise awareness across our communities and to build on the excellent work going on locally to prevent this abuse and to help victims. We welcome views on how we can strengthen our approach and I will report back on Cabinet’s response to this scrutiny paper in due course.”

The report was inspected by cabinet members at a meeting on July 18, and its recommendations will be decided on late this year. The issue of FGM began earning wide recognition in 2012 when the United Nations adopted a worldwide ban.

SIR SIMON Hughes was selected as the Liberal Democrat’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark - his former constituency - on Tuesday, in preparation of a potential snap general election.

A meeting of party members met in Southwark to discuss what they would do if the new Prime Minister, Theresa May, decided to call a vote in the next nine months.

Sir Simon was the MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark for 32 years, losing his seat to Labour’s Neil Coyle in 2015.

The Liberal Democrats are said to be planning their candidates across the country in case the Conservatives decide to take advantage of their twenty point lead over Labour.

Tim McNally, Chair of Bermondsey and Old Southwark Liberal Democrats, confirmed to the News that Sir Simon “has been selected as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark in the event of a snap election”, with a formal announcement being made on Monday.

MP Neil, who has recently been outspoken over Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, said: “Thousands of

Man stabbed outside bookies Ferrets found in bin News Page 6

A MAN in twenties was stabbed in leg in broad daylight outside a William Hill in Grove Vale, leading to the store closing on Tuesday.

His injuries are said to not be serious and police were called at 2:09pm.

Anthony Squires, who witnessed the aftermath, told the News: “I was in the café nearby getting my usual bacon sandwich when we heard a commotion.

The café had to close at 2:40 and we didn’t know what had happened.

“I couldn’t go round the way to where I live so I thought, “I’m on a mobility scooter” so I should have a look and went

A Met Police spokesperson said that no arrests have been made.

Four arrests after park disturbance

FOUR HAVE been arrested following the two nights of violence at Burgess Park last week.

The disorder kicked off on Tuesday when over 1,500 gathered for a water fight organised on social media.

The scenes turned nasty with fights breaking out after 7pm. Two teenaged boys were hospitalised with stab wounds, and two women were reported injured.

Eyewitness told the News the knife attacks sparked stampedes of kids up Albany Road, with hundreds ransacking the Old Kent Road Tesco after 9pm.

Local police arrested two sixteen-yearolds on July 25 on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm on Tuesday night.

They were bailed to a date in September.

Wednesday saw further unrest as riot police stood against a group of 40 at Burgess Park lake at 9pm. Eyewitness, Polly Raven, saw men hurling bottles and charging at police lines.

Police confirmed there were two arrests on Wednesday of a fifteen-yearold boy on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon, and of a man for alleged breaches of the Public Order Act. Met Police commander Ben-Julian Harrington, said: “Think really carefully about the types of event [you] attend.

Last week we once again saw how dangerous unlicensed events can be, they attract criminals and are often not safe.”

Complaints against councillors received

PECKHAM: Formal complaints have been made against two councillors after a row broke out with residents at the Peckham and Nunhead Community Council meeting on June 29.

At the meeting, it was said that members of the Save Southwark Woods campaign exchanged heated words with Lane ward councillor Nick Dolezal.

Cllr Dolezal was alleged to have sworn and acted in a “threatening” manner towards two residents during an unscheduled debate about the council’s plans to re-landscape Camberwell New Cemetery, with the aim of providing new burial plots.

The News understands from residents who attended, that among the complaints was an accusation that councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities and safety, spoke out of turn to a resident in a “rude, patronising” manner.

Southwark Council will now carry out an internal investigation into whether cllrs Hargrove and Dolezal were in breach of Section Ten of the council’s Code of Conduct: “always treating people with respect”.

A council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that several complaints have been received relating to the community council meeting on June 29.

“We cannot comment further while these are assessed in line with council procedure.”

RSPCA launch appeal after 7 ferrets found dumped in bin NUNHEAD

THE RSPCA is appealing for information after seven ferrets were dumped in a communal bin in Nunhead last week.

The little critters were found by a member of the public on July 13, stuffed in a cat carrier in Howbury Road next to a row of flats.

They were described as “juvenile”; two of them with brown coats, and the other five were cream-coloured.

The RSPCA is now appealing for help to find the ferrets’ owners.

RSPCA officer, Callum Issitt, said: "Someone had just chucked these pets away as if they were rubbish.

"Had they not been spotted by this kindly passing member of the

public, who knows what would have happened to them?

"Thankfully they are all in good health and now in RSPCA care. We hope to find new homes for them soon.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIl has defended paying £15,400 in 2014 for a redesign of their logo, which included removing the full stop, amid criticism that they did so while making cuts to youth services.

Figures revealed in a freedom of information request showed the council spent £6,819 on design and a further £8,581 on implementation. But council leader Peter John has said the rebrand is actually saving the council money.

Part of the ‘Branding Refresh’ report said: “The logo has been redrawn to improve its quality, reduce the size of the ‘S’ and make it more legible, with the aim of being more sustainable and appropriate for digital use, as well as being more compact and requiring less space around it.

“The full stop has been removed. It is proposed that for all items except letterheads, the logo drops the use of the word council and replaces this with gov.uk instead, reflecting our commitment to digital by default.”

Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, Leader of Southwark Liberal Democrats, said: "Labour Southwark has cut youth services by 50 per cent and introduced charges for bulk refuse collections.

“And yet they seem to always be able to find money for their pet projects or for introducing new payments for Labour councillors. These really are not the priorities for local residents."

Council’s ‘free gym and swim’ scheme starts on Friday

SOUTHWARK: The council’s free swim and gym programme launches on Friday, giving residents free access to swimming pools and gyms at all leisure centres at certain times.

The scheme will open the centres all day on Fridays, as well as on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2pm.

FISHER FC is finally to return to its homeland after twelve years in Dulwich, with the team’s first match in the new stadium this weekend against Farnborough OBG.

The club has worked with Southwark Council and the Southern

Counties East Football League to ensure the new St Paul’s stadium in Salter Road passed all inspections and ground grading tests ahead of the new season.

Fisher will host two pre-season friendlies as test events at St. Paul’s, before competitive football returns on August 13, with the first game of the new season against Rochester United.

Fisher Chairman Ben Westmancott said: “This is a huge step forward for Fisher FC, with football, finally being played back in Rotherhithe.

“A lot of hard work has been put in to reach this stage and everyone connected with the club is looking forward to celebrating reaching our goal of getting Fisher back home.

“These friendlies will be a great warm up not just for the First Team,

but also for our matchday team – we’ll need to get our turnstile sharpness back!”

The News has previously reported on Fisher’s journey home, which has seen controversy over the tender process for the stadium, and its security.

Runners raise £3k

VOLUNTEERS FROM the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers have thanked donors after raising £3,000 to keep the charity afloat.

The News reported in June on how six of the day centre team would take part in the London Vitality 10k Run, which took place on July 10.

The charity’s coordinator, Pauline Nandoo, said that the Elephant and Castle and Peckham based charity was struggling to cope after losing £40,000 of council funding in April.

“We lost £30,000 from Southwark Council after they cut spending on youth services earlier in the year. Then we lost £8,000 from the Community Choice Programme,” Pauline said.

The Day centre offers a food bank, Citizens Advice drop-in service, nurse visits, English lessons, and parenting

support from its three centres in Copleston Road, New Kent Road, and Peckham Park Road. One of the volunteers who took part, Jonas Wesfendorf, said: “We depend on donations and we work with other charities. For example Fair Share collect food for our food bank and we get donations of food from supermarkets.

We’re now looking for new donors who can help us, but it is proving difficult.”

Cathedrals ward Liberal Democrat councillor, David Noakes, who also took part in the run, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who sponsored me to run this 10k race.

“The work that the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers does is invaluable and has never been in such demand. Unfortunately though, the charity has lost some of its grants this year from the council as a result of cuts imposed on local government.”

Residents fear regeneration will see them moved from their estate ROTHERHITHE

A CANCER suffering veteran who came to England aboard the Empire Windrush is among a group of residents fearing for their future on Rotherhithe’s Canada Estate.

Eric Paule-Drysdale, 90, has lived in Edmonton Court since the 1970s and joins his neighbours’ concerns over Southwark Council’s plan to decant and regenerate the building in the coming years.

Proposals are for new homes to be built on the estate’s Renforth Street car park before starting on Edmonton Court, where there are 21 dwellings.

But there are no guarantees for Edmonton’s residents specifically to have a place in the new building other than through for ‘local lettings’, where 50 per cent of the new flats will be prioritised for the local area.

Mr Paule-Drysdale said: “I’ll only move if they have a good cemetery. I don’t want to move too far. I’m old now and I can hardly walk. I have been living here since the 1970s and I don’t want to move off.

“I’m now 90-years-old. I came over on the Windrush with Sam King, served my country and have suffered from cancer, but I still clean my

windows and look after my home. I want to be buried on this estate.”

The new build would also have to be comprised of at least 42 dwellings too, if the 50 per cent available through local lettings could provide new homes for the residents.

Another resident, Jixu Ma, said she didn’t want to move away from the estate either because she “doesn’t know anywhere else”.

She said: “I have never seen a community like this, everyone is friendly and we feel very safe. I am very sad if I have to move somewhere else. I am part of this community and I am happy here.”

The plan to build on the car park is part of Southwark Council’s commitment to tackling the housing crisis, and is included in Phase Two of the New Homes Delivery Programme.

But as Phase Three of the programme will see Edmonton Court decanted and the possibility of not all being able to move into the new-build, critics say Southwark Council is not listening to what the current residents want.

Barry Duckett, chair of the Canada Estate TRA, said: “The Edmonton Court residents want to stay on the estate. The council chucked a lot of plans on the table with nothing that is what we want. They don’t care. I’ve told them they are not building anything on this estate until they come

BHS to close in August ROTHERHITHE

THE BHS store in Surrey Quays will be shut by August 20 along with other stores nationwide, contributing to a loss of 11,000 jobs.

The announcement by administrators Duff and Phelps comes after they failed to find a potential buyer for the struggling retail chain.

BHS fell into administration earlier this year after its £571m pension deficit started

to take its toll on the business.

Dave Gill, Usdaw National Officer, said: “This announcement is the final hammer blow to BHS staff, who have been worried about their future for over a year since the company was sold for £1 and more recently put in the hands of the administrators. Following the news that all remaining BHS stores will be closed

by August 20, Usdaw calls on the administrators to redouble their efforts in finding a buyer for the remaining stores and to secure as many jobs as possible.”

No final plans have been made for the car park yet and Southwark Council said it was listening ahead of a final design.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: “The Canada Estate car park site was suggested by local people as a possible location to build new council homes.

“We have been exploring the idea with a local steering group ahead of a formal decision on the design due later this year.

“We need a good mix of homes, including family size homes, and we are talking to local residents including in Edmonton Court about how we can ensure there are enough council homes on this site and in the nearby area."

NUNHEAD FAMILIES have been landed with £46,000 roof-repair bills

by Southwark Council, forcing some to look at leaving the area for good.

Residents in Limes Walk, a block of 1970s council flats, have been embroiled in the ongoing dispute with the council since 2014.

The council insist leaseholders pay between £44,000 to £46,000 to replace the slate roof that stretches across the two-block estate with 42 flats. But residents told the News they have been left with no choice but to challenge the council in a tribunal. They have also been prevented from scrutinising the details of their “extortionate” deal the council has reached with contractors A&E Elkins Ltd. Alastair Kenward, 42, who lives with his wife and son, said: “They have given us no help with anything and they are being completely un-transparent.

“We asked [the council] for the specs so we could try and find a better quote somewhere else and they just gave us eight little details. We took the specs to a scaffolder and we were told it wasn’t enough information. So the council are effectively stopping us from trying to find another price.

“They said they put the job out to tender and that this was the best of five deals they could find. We asked them to

Cathedrals to disappear?

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S Cathedrals ward will disappear in the next council election if the independent Local Government Boundary Commission’s recommendations are followed.

The commission’s review follows an eight-week public consultation on draft proposals for each ward across Southwark, with its final recommendation being that the number of councillors remain at 63, and that they should represent seventeen three-member wards and six two-member wards.

Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We are extremely grateful to people across Southwark who took the time and effort to send us their views. The Commission considered every piece of evidence it received before finalising these recommendations.

“Across the borough, we have sought to balance the views expressed to us by local

people with the criteria we must apply when we are deciding on new electoral arrangements.

“As such, we believe these recommendations deliver electoral equality for voters as well as reflecting the identities of communities in Southwark.”

Changes to the draft proposals published in February include altering proposals to divide the Dulwich Village area between wards by instead proposing the area become a two-member Dulwich Village ward.

In the centre and north of the borough, the Commission made small changes to boundaries, including the whole of Burgess Park being included in Faraday ward, rather than split between wards as previously proposed.

The Commission has also amended the boundary between the wards of Camberwell Green and St Giles in order to keep all of the D’Eynsford Estate in St Giles ward.

DETECTIVES FROM the Trident Gang Crime Command are appealing for witnesses after a 22-year-old man was shot in Camberwell on Friday.

Police confirmed they were called to the Brandon Estate, between Camberwell New Road and John Ruskin Street, just after 1am, after locals heard multiple gun shots.

They were then called minutes later to reports of a man with gunshot wounds to his abdomen lying in Camberwell New Road.

The victim is currently in hospital in a stable condition, with injuries that are not thought to be life threatening. Police believe the initial shooting may have taken place in nearby John Ruskin Street.

The brutal incident marked the second shooting in Camberwell this week, after a man was allegedly struck in a drive-by in Basingdon Way off Denmark Hill Estate on Monday, July 18.

BACON’S COLLEGE welcomed Channel 4’s Undateables star and ‘Jeans for Genes’ Day Ambassador Adam Pearson last

week, to celebrate the school’s Diversity Day.

Adam Pearson, who has Neurofibromatosis, which leaves his face disfigured with benign tumours, said: "It was fantastic to visit the pupils of Bacon's College and to help celebrate diversity, an issue close to

my heart.”

One in 25 children is affected by a genetic disorder and Bacons College's Diversity Day is held to highlight the diversity within the school.

A PLANNING application has been submitted to build a block of 120 new homes with a state-ofthe-art library and medical centre as part of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration.

The development could replace a square of land, referred to as ‘Block 18’ occupied by derelict homes, a sports area and a grassy bank, located between Thurlow Street, Dawes Street, and Inville Road.

The proposal includes a four-tiered block which is four, six, seven and fifteen storeys tall.

If approved by Southwark Council, the housing association behind the scheme, Notting Hill, have said

roughly half of the new flats will be available at social rents or shared ownership.

Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: "Southwark is committed to delivering quality, affordable new homes for local people, but the regeneration at Aylesbury is about much more than that. We also want to make a positive difference to the lives of the people who live on the estate, with better open spaces and community facilities such as this brand new library and health centre.

“I am very pleased to see proposals coming forward for this site at the heart of the estate that will really start to deliver these and become a central hub for the local community.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has adopted a charter to help sufferers of devastating Motor Neurone Disease, after a campaign by two local residents.

Lorraine Sheahan and Emma Winter both lost loved ones to the progressive illness that affects the brain and spinal cord, and can leave sufferers ‘locked in a failing body,’ unable to move, talk and, in the end, breathe.

The residents campaigned for the council to adopt the five point charter drawn up by the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association - to help others.

Emma, from Kennington, witnessed her grandmother die from MND when she was a child and has spoken about how “cruel, dehumanising, humiliating and horrific” and “utterly hopeless” it was for her.

Emma said: “Nine months after moving into my house share I received a text from my housemate, Sarah, to say she was heading home, having just found out her mum had been diagnosed with MND. “As a child I'd witnessed my grandmother die from it and I wasn't sure how honest I should be. Should I tell her how cruel, dehumanising, humiliating and horrific her mum’s life was going to be now?

“At first, not knowing much about the disease Sarah seemed ok. It was so hard, because of course I didn't want to have to tell her the situation was utterly hopeless and that her mum was most likely going to die soon.

“For people like me who have seen this disease destroy lives - those of people close to me and the many lovely people I've met through volunteering, your support of the charter is really important.”

In the time that six people are diagnosed every day with MND, six people die from it. At any one time there are approximately 5,000 people with MND in the UK.

“It leaves people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. Some people may experience changes in thinking and behaviour, but most remain fully aware of what is happening to them.”

Bermondsey woman Lorraine Sheahan, who reached out to Liberal Democrat Councillor Anood Al-Samerai to help with the charter, lost her father in just three months and spent time she could have had with him on the phone explaining his situation.

She said: “During the very short time I had with my dad – three months and twenty days - I spent far too much time on the phone with the many services, not only explaining what MND was, but the progression of it and the aggressive progression of my dad’s case.

“That’s time I should have been

spending with my dad, supporting him, caring for him. Moments and memories that I will never get back. This is why it is so important for other people suffering.

“It leaves people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk and eventually breathe. Some people may experience changes in thinking and behaviour, but most remain fully aware of what is happening to them.”

The Motor Neurone Disease charter is made up of five steps: The right to an early diagnosis and information, the right to access quality care and treatments, the right to be treated as individuals and with

dignity and respect, the right to maximise their quality of life, and carers of people with MND have the right to be valued, respected, listened to and well-supported.

Southwark Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, said: “I met recently with the daughter of someone who died of MND just a few months after being diagnosed. It was heart-breaking to hear her story and how the council has failed up to now to respond fast enough to the developing needs of sufferers. Due to the disease’s progressive nature, a quick response to these symptoms is needed to preserve the

quality of life of those living with MDN. In this resident’s case the council’s response was too slow and it proved unable to keep up with their needs. I wanted the council to do more to help and that’s why I tabled this motion for debate.

Councillors heard some truly moving stories about what it’s like to live with MND and care for people with it.

“I was pleased that all the political parties agreed to adopt the MND Charter.

Councils have an important role to play in the treatment of the disease’s symptoms and in the wellbeing of residents who suffer from it.”

TWO-HUNDRED years of east Walworth heritage and heroes was brought to life with the first of a series of animated tours.

Saturday’s tour of East Street saw a showcase of actors from the People’s Company, musicians and local historians shed a light on the community’s forgotten times.

At each stop the entourage was greeted by an ‘echo of the past’ to give a taste of the sights, sounds and characters from each moment in time, and a fact-filled talk by the Walworth Society’s John Whelan.

Guests were taken to the 1860s markets of East Lane and Westmorland Road. The market would open each morning at 8.30am with a police officer’s daily ritual of kicking off the day of trade ‘giving the tip’ by blowing his whistle.

Among the street traders you could find “costermongers” selling fruit and veg, “quacks” flogging made up medicines, preachers, clairvoyants and tipsters.

There, you also had the first pearlybutton-wearing kings and queens of the market, which donated their rank in the markets.

A stop at Pilton Place, which John said was an example of the great expanse of housing built by philanthropists such as Edward Yates, who built 2,500 Southwark homes in the nineteenthcentury. The estate was later bought in 1971 by American George Peabody, who was later made a freeman of London.

So ambitious was the scale of housebuilding, John said, that east Walworth became the most densely populated area in Britain, with 294 people per square-acre.

The tour also took on illegal betting on street corners, organised by gangs whose spies would scout around to watch for the law for speedy scarper, and offered a sneak peek of the soon-to-be-reopened Horseman and Hounds in Elsted Street.

Rounding off the tour was a guest talk from Johnny Wallington OBE, chair of the market traders’ association.

with fellow Walworth Society member, Diana Cochrane, said: “My favourite thing to research was the story of how the pension scheme was created here in Walworth by Robert Browning.

“The fact that the welfare system, that helping hand, was designed in our community, that’s what our community is all about. It’s wonderful to bring history to life in this way. We remember the past and look to the future.”

The next tour will explore Walworth Road on August 20. A tour of West Walworth will take place on September 10. Plans for a tour of the Elephant and Castle Regeneration site are underway.

A DETERMINED Irish dancer from Dulwich won the Seamus and Marie Moore Championship despite hurting her foot days before the competition.

Jessica O’Hara, twelve, a dancer from Hopkins Academy of Irish Dance, based in Dulwich, beat other dancers from around the country in Hertfordshire over the competition weekend.

A hard worker, Jessica attends lessons four times a week and regularly gives up her weekends to travel to competitions, to help her

reach her goal of becoming the Great Britain Champion.

Jessica said: “They called out the results in reverse order, and when I got to the bottom two, I was certain the girl next to me would win.

“When they called out second place and it wasn't my number, my heart stopped for a few seconds, I turned to my amazing mum, and burst into tears.

“I had won! It was only my seventh ever championship - I couldn't believe it! I was competing against girls who had been doing championships for years and I had only just starting competing as a novice dancer just over a year ago.

“I wouldn't have been able to do it without my fabulous dance teachers, Sarah Hopkins and Tony Tyrrell, my dance family (all of Hopkins Academy), and my real family. The support I get is phenomenal. Thanks to everyone at the Hopkins Academy of Irish dance!”

Sarah Hopkins, Jessica’s teacher, said: “The second she walked through my door I knew there was something special about her. I knew she had what it took to be a champion.

“Some may say I push her a little too hard, but having toured the world with Riverdance for five years, I know what it takes to achieve your dreams in this industry.”

Blue plaques votes open

SOUTHWARK: The time has come for Southwark to vote on which worthy person or place will be honoured with a Blue Plaque for 2016.

The selection of this year’s Southwark Blue Plaques nominations took place on July 12, after all the borough’s recommendations were gathered and counted by Veronica Alden, chair of the Southwark Heritage Association.

The first of four nominations went to Sir James Black OM, the Nobel Prize winning pharmacology who practised at King’s College Hospital in 1984.

Black received his Nobel Prize for medicine in 1988 for the development of two major families of drugs: beta blockers, which treat coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and heart failure, and an anti-ulcer histamine.

Surrey Docks Farm has been nominated for providing a free community resource for Southwark residents of all ages, seven days per week. The farm site has a rich history, once part of a great shipyard.

Thirdly, Gertrude Lawrence was born at 6 Bath Terrace, Newington, in 1898.

She is most famous for the final stage role as Anna in Roger and Hammerstein's original production of The King and I. The fourth nomination went to Kirkaldy's Testing Museum in 99 Southwark Street, which set international standards in testing materials. Today, the museum preserves Kirkaldy's unique Universal Testing Machine.

ALFRED SALTER Primary School children and parents raised £1,170 for Ruby Longman before the end of term, the most they have ever raised, for her to buy a computer to help her communicate.

Ruby, ten, suffers from the rare Rett syndrome which has left her unable to walk or talk since she was a baby.

A successful campaign was launched earlier this year to raise £10,000 to buy an eyegaze computer which would help her make choices with her eyes.

Timi Samples, Ruby’s mum, said: “It’s totally amazing and the most the school has ever raised. Ruby's

eyegaze test will be September 8.

“The children received achievements for all they did to raise money for Ruby, and they decided what to do and how to raise money.

“They did pin the bow on Ruby, a baby food challenge, a lucky dip, as well as a raffle and cake sale.”

Over a thousand cycle through the streets

Eva Charrington, 51, an eye-witness who has been cycling for twenty years, said: “I think the cyclists themselves don’t think about what’s happening. I think people are OK with it when it happens but it is just extremely dangerous.

“People were cycling along in swarms and one came up behind me and told me to get out of the way. They started going the wrong way up main roads. It’s ridiculous really. The police had to be called for everyone’s safety.

“Something has to be done. I actually think the parents don’t know what they are up to. They were all quite young. I am sure their parents would like to know what they’re up to. I think it’s just a case of them being young and not knowing.”

Transport for London tweeted on the day that the '"cyclist demo" was heading along Tooley Street and Jamaica Road in the afternoon.

A TfL spokesperson said that police had told them around 1,200 cyclists were taking part in the event, with a few even going into the Blackwall Tunnel briefly.

The police were contacted for more information but a spokesperson said none was available.

Residents and members of the Communications Workers Unions (CWU), will gather at the Crown Post Office at 10.30am on Saturday, and march to the branch in Peckham High Street.

The threat of the Rye Lane branch’s closure first arose in February when its landlord, Allview Estates, successfully applied for planning permission to convert the first floor into flats.

The Post Office said disruption from construction works would force it to shut at least temporarily, and later concluded that closing even for a short time would incur such a financial loss that it would have to abandon the site completely.

The News approached the Post

Office to ask whether the Post Office made attempts to find a new home in the area, but the company did not respond.

Nunhead resident and CWU member, Mole Meade, told the News: “People here are facing a downgrading of their basic, taxfunded public services.

“I was in there the other day with an old man on crutches. He said he’s now going to have to walk way up the

road instead. It’s not fair on people like him. Where are these people going to get stamps, recorded delivery, or passport and ID services?”

The 54-year-old, who also works for the Post Office, said: “We know there’s nothing we can do to stop this, but we’re going to make a noise.

There’s a few hundred expected to come down, and we had a petition with 2,500 signatures.”

SOUTHWARK FOODBANK is running at a two-year low of supplies while bracing itself for a surge in demand this summer, as families who rely on free school meals face going hungry in the holidays.

The increase in parents seeking help feeding their children re-occurs each summer, as schools break up for six weeks.

Felicia Boshorin, project manager of the Pecan foodbank in Peckham High Street, said: “We are short of food across all of Southwark. We’re at the lowest we have been for two years and looking for more donations.”

The food bank held a Holiday Club on Monday at the Ann Bernadt Children’s

Centre in Chandler Way, and provided cooked meals for kids and families that came down.

Two more will be held especially for families on each Monday. The next Holiday Club will be held at John Donne Primary School on August 2, and another the following week at the One O’clock Club in Peckham Rye Park.

“We have already seen the numbers increase each day,” Felicia said. “Across our food banks [including at Bermondsey Methodist Church] we are looking after about 50 families.

“There are many more we could help if we had the resources. Our system involves asking local schools to recommend families to us who need help, so it’s schools who help us pick the most needy.”

Residents can make donations to the Southwark Foodbank at collection bins located at: Surrey Quays Shopping Centre customer services; Tesco in Old Kent Road, and the Elephant and castle Shopping Centre customer services.

The two-and-three-storey block will be placed in the currently vacant southeast corner of the site, opposite Glengary Road, in East Dulwich Grove.

The development marks the first phase of the overall plans to house a new secondary and sixth-form school, run by The Charter Schools Educational Trust.

The new school, to be named The Charter School East Dulwich, will take over the other three-quarters of the nineteenth-century hospital site.

Documents within the application state that the central ‘Chateau’ building, and the western wings of the Victorian buildings will be preserved when the school moves in, while its eastern wings have already been demolished.

Among the facilities at the new health centre will be: • Services for people with long-term conditions, including: chronic kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease, chronic asthma and some mental health services • Diagnostics and out-patient services • Primary care children’s services with immunisations and speech and language therapy • Blood testing facilities, MRI scanning, ultrasounds, echo-cardiology and x-rays • Musculo-skeletal physiotherapy, skin and liver clinics and some eye-services A four-week consultation for the development was held between March and April.

‘Polluted schools’

The report, prepared for London Mayor Khan, reveals Southwark has the most secondary schools breaching EU safety limits for transport pollution in London.

A previous report said Southwark also has the highest number of primary schools whose air is breaking safety limits.

Among the schools where our children are being poisoned at above EU limits are the Sacred Heart, All Saints, St Olav’s, Globe, Walworth, UAE, City of London, Harris Peckham and East Dulwich secondary schools.

This is now a full scale health emergency but Southwark continues to do almost nothing to protect our children’s lives. It is the motor lobby and developers who lethally dictate their lack of action.

Take the latest scandal where the council allowed developers to block all future protected cycle lanes on Rotherhithe New Road, at its junction with St James’s Road, allowing them to build right up to the pavement at this dangerous bottle-neck.

Children cycling to school or to Southwark Park will now never be able to cycle on a protected lane at this location.

Meanwhile, the council is not building a single protected cycle-lane anywhere on the borough roads that it controls. All new Cycle Highways are on Transport for London routes.

Even worse, new planning guidance for the entire Old Kent Road area, now out for consultation until September, as usual misleads in its introduction, where it says the new plan will provide protection for cycling. Detailed plans show there is NO protected cycle lane planned for the road, just like they refused to do in the new Aylesbury and Heygate.

So the kids at the Walworth Academy will continue to breathe polluted toxins from the Old Kent Road.

Research has shown that transport pollution damages lung growth for life in young children. It is also implicated in the asthma epidemic sweeping Southwark’s schools and also causes cancers, lung and heart diseases.

If you want Southwark to start taking real action on this emergency, a good first step would be to email them at futurepeckham@southwark.gov.uk and urge them to install a protected cycle highway along the entire length of the Old Kent Road.

Justin Elcombe, managing director of Hollybrook Homes said: "With regard to the loss of the disused youth club and the concrete ball area, we understand that the council have provided much improved replacement facilities locally at nearby Docklands Settlements."

On page 22 of the same paper in the 'Community Notices' section there is an advert for the Docklands Settlements that is offering 'Astroturf Pitch for Hire £50/hour' How can this replace a free to use space that is still in use?

No children or their parents in the community can afford £50 an hour.

Although the concrete area has not been maintained by the council for years it is still used.

I can vouch for this as I live next to it and have photos on my phone of children using it.

Post-Brexit fear factor is without foundation

ALTHOUGH THE EU benefits a ruling elite, for many hundreds of thousands across the continent it has wrecked economics and eroded national sovereignty.

The EU as an organisation is in profound crisis, with declining growth, a tottering banking system, mass unemployment and

alarming levels of debt and deep rooted structural weaknesses.

In its latest global strategy report, French bank Societe General carries a piece by one of its top analyst who says: “I believe it is only a matter of time before the Eurozone Project fractures”. He points out that Italy’s banking system is already on the verge of collapse.

Since Brexit though, it has emerged that Switzerland, Singapore and Hong Kong want to form a financial alliance with London. Also India and China have made enthusiastic noises about strengthening trade links.

Don’t forget, we buy more from Europe than we sell to it, so it’s in their interests not to start a trade war.

Britain snared its first major takeover of a European rival since the referendum on a day when bosses talked up their business prospects outside the EU. And a sign that life in the City was getting back to normal, a string of companies said the fall in Sterling would boost profits, while others identified fresh opportunities.

Buy-out firm Melrose swooped for an American rival, waste management group Shanks announced plans for a ‘transformational deal’ to expand in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The deals means that thousands of Dutch and Belgium households will have their rubbish collected and recycled by the British company.

Meanwhile, Primark reported that the French and Americans were falling in love with its cheap fashions.

Also, the boss of the world’s biggest hotel group has predicted that the fall in the pound will lead to a travel boom in Britain.

ANY RESIDENTS in my constituency are heavily reliant on local rail services to get to work.

The service across all lines has been unacceptable for some time, but on Monday 11th July Southern Railway implemented an emergency timetable which resulted in the cancellation of 341 services across their network.

I had last met with the Rail Minister, Claire Perry MP, as well as Southern’s chief executive, Charles Horton, on 22nd June 2016, when neither raised the possibility of the introduction of an emergency timetable.

At the meeting I was told that steps were being taken to address Southern’s performance, and that residents would begin to see an improvement in the reliability of Southern rail services over a period of weeks. Clearly this was not true.

The services cancelled are heavily concentrated on South London, including the vast majority of rush hour services running from North Dulwich, East Dulwich, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Gipsy Hill and Crystal Palace as well as the withdrawal of all services to London Bridge from West Norwood and Tulse Hill.

This is effectively the collapse of commuter rail services in my constituency and across much of Southwark, and coming on top of more than 18 months of appalling service levels, cancelled trains, short trains and overcrowding as a consequence of the earlier phases of the London Bridge works, it is completely unacceptable.

I am calling on the government, as a matter of urgency, to remove the franchise from Southern and for the Department of Transport to take over the running of the service directly, while arrangements are put in place to transfer the services to Transport for London.

Given the unacceptably disproportionate focus of the cuts to services in South London I am pressing for the emergency timetable to be further revised immediately to distribute its impacts more fairly across the wider network, and for additional buses to be provided to relieve overcrowding.

Southern has demonstrated that it is not competent to run the rail network in South London, and the government must now recognise this and take urgent action to address it.

he Imperial War Museum has a new exhibition Real to Reel: A Century of War Movies - that shows a hundred years of war films, from the early days when people first got a glimpse of the horrors of conflict through The Battle of The Somme, into the propaganda films in wartime that were made to instill a feeling of togetherness and national spirit in the population, with Disney even putting out a Donald Duck film as a training feisty but practical counterweight to the bluster and sodden maker of clogs. She was a towering presence with a great sense of timing and economy. I particularly enjoyed the interplay with her, slightly unwilling, husband Willie Mossop, played by the excellent Bryan Dick. Their onstage relationship was a comedy highlight and deserves special mention, and the scene showing their wedding night would have been worth the ticket price alone.

In recent years war has moved to Asia and the exhibition shows how Stanley Kubrick created a Vietnamese city on wasteland in East London with 200 palm trees shipped over from Spain.

There are many costumes and props on show here: David Niven’s service jacket from A Matter of Life and Death, a gown worn by Marlene Dietrich when she entertained the troops overseas, a replica of the motorbike Steve McQueen did not escape on in The Great Escape, plus a lot of insights into how films are made.

War has changed now, there are no pointless charges of young men going over the top to run at guns any more, but there is still death and Real to Reel is a reminder what war does to people. And that is why this exhibition is important and why war films are needed to tell stories that should never be forgotten.

The impossible six

miss, you see, is being amazed.

Much theatre chiefly concerns itself with sadness and joy. We laugh, we cry, it all turns out okay in the end.

But when did you last scream and shout 'what the...'? Exactly.

Well at Impossible at The Noel Coward Theatre, that's what I got.

Six performers give us a greatest hits tour of magic, mind-reading and daredevilry, and it was great fun.

Alongside the 'standard' sawing people in half, scantily clad girls disappearing, and sleight of hand, were genuinely touching moments where you thought 'what...?!!!!'

Once the show starts you sort of get absorbed and become six years old again, wide-eyed and gawping like a simpleton. I enjoyed it immensely.

Magic, to me, is like a great band who all died. The greats: Houdini, Merlin, and Daniels, have, alas, all passed. But, like a great tribute band we still get to go along and enjoy the show. Impossible is amazing.

A TOWERING ACHIEVEMENT

A UNIQUE set of photographs depicting the construction of Tower Bridge has been unveiled on a new website by the London Picture Archive, writes Owen Sheppard...

The new catalogue of sepia pictures (available at www.collage.cityoflondon.gov.uk) date back to 1892, and reveal the incredible ingenuity behind one of Southwark’s most notable landmarks.

The photos depicting Tower Bridge’s construction surfaced in the media in 2011. But before that they had been discovered lying in a skip in Westminster in 2006.

The Daily Telegraph reported in 2011

that a caretaker, aged 59, had found the photo albums and kept them underneath his bed in a carrier bag for a year.

A City of London Tower Bridge tour guide, Peter Berthoud, who realised the significance of the images, said: “I just couldn't believe it. I spent hours going through my books to see if these pictures were already around, but I couldn't see them anywhere - they are totally unique.”

Laurence Ward, Head of digital services, at the London Metropolitan Services the City of London, said his company then bought them from a dealer just over a year ago.

Mr Ward said they were taken by the

construction companies who built them as works commenced in 1887, and took eight years with five major contractors.

The resident engineer for the bridge’s construction was E W Crutwell. Its foundations were laid by Sir John Jackson, the hydraulics were by Baron Armstrong, with the rest of the assembly taken on by William Webster, Sir H.H. Bartlett, and Sir William Arrol & Amp Co. Together they employed 432 workers.

Two massive piers containing over 70,000 tons of concrete were sunk into the riverbed to support the construction. Over 11,000 tons of steel provided the framework for the towers and walkways, then clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone. The total cost of construction was £1,184,000 – the equivalent of £122m in 2015. The

bridge was officially opened on June 30, 1894.

Mr Ward added: “A few people have said to me while we were completing this project that they didn’t realise how recent the bridge was actually built. It’s a very nice story and something that’s very well recorded.”

The prints and photographs available on the Collage website form one section of the world’s largest collection of historical images of the capital, including over 150,000 historical pictures of London streets.

The gallery also includes images of the Great Fire of 1666 and compelling photos of Victorian street life. Its oldest sketches and prints date back to 1450.

idden away in Snowsfields around the corner from London Bridge station stands a testament to Texan barbeque food and Mexican tequila, writes Alex Yeates...

If the United State of America wasn’t already building a new embassy in Nine Elms, Texas Joe’s restaurant could step up to the plate. When you first walk into Joe’s the aroma of slow cooked meat greets you immediately.

Bearing in mind the meat sweats to come, my guest and I decided to dine outside.

Having seen Texas Joe’s beef jerky on sale around the country and on the TVshow, Dragon’s Den in 2013, we knew we were in good hands. Enjoying the novelty of a menu printed on an oldstyle newspaper, we ordered a round of margaritas. Once we had settled in and heard most the menu came with pickles, coleslaw and a slice of bread, we eagerly went for beef brisket, a pork taco, chicken thighs, and sides of bacon wrapped jalapenos and brisket nachos.

As onlookers walked past stealing glances at our food while it was set down in front of us, we thought that we had fallen victim to having eyes bigger than our stomachs. But as a mouthful of tender beef brisket melted in my mouth, we knew that the mountain of meat was not going to prove problematic.

Complemented beautifully by the barbeque dip, the beef brisket set itself apart from other popular joints such as Meat Liquor and Grillstock. Soft to the touch and gentle on the eyes, it was seen off in no time. The bacon wrapped jalapenos beckoned nearby and we tentatively took a first bite. We weren’t expecting such an explosion of grease, spice and texture, and were pleasantly surprised to find its innards stuffed with a creamy paste.

The chicken thighs were aplenty and as flavoursome as the brisket. Its skin was distinctive and would have given the colonel a run for his money. The pork taco was soft and floury and very satisfying, with what you can only describe as having a wholesome chew.

The brisket nachos came on a tray and were delightful snacks to enjoy between main courses. Based with a crunchy nacho and topped with tender brisket, beans, cheese and a jalapeno pepper, it served as a paradoxical blend of crunchy and juicy.

With the sweats setting in, we took a moment to take in the décor of the restaurant. By the kitchen sits a beautiful copy of a painting showing

the Battle of the Alamo, a famous battle in 1836 between the Republic of Texas and the Mexican government. A keen Dallas native, our waiters Greg and Beth told us how Joe would always wear a cowboy outfit, and has a pet Chihuahua called Crockett, after the King of the Wild Frontier, Davy Crockett.

As our food was cleared away the drinks menu reappeared, boasting a wide range of tequilas and bourbons.

To finish off the evening, we ordered an aptly named Ilegal Joven Mezcal, which came on the rocks, with salt and an orange slice on the side.

Expecting a mule-strength kickback, we held the orange chasers ready, but were amazed by how smooth and easily the drink went down. Almost as if it were water, you could happily drink a bottle.

DULWICH HAMLET put in a creditable performance last Saturday in their friendly fixture against a Millwall XI, as they continue their preparations for the new season.

The home side went in front early on but Millwall’s experience told and they hit back to claim the win.

Lions boss Justin Skinner included seven players in his starting line-up who have already featured for the first team in pre-season.

Millwall handed a trial to Harry Smith, the 6ft 6ins striker whose goals inspired Folkstone Invicta’s promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division, where they will come up against Hamlet next season.

Skinner also trialled former Rangers winger Mekhi McLeod and Channing Campbell.

But it was the home side who made all of the early running, and they went ahead in the 15th minute when Daniel Carr crashed his penalty down the middle after a handball in the box.

Millwall were relying on goalkeeper Tom King to prevent Hamlet doubling their lead, and he produced a brilliant full-length save to keep out Nyren Clunis’ longrange effort.

Gavin Rose’s side did have the ball in the back of the net in the 35th minute, but it was ruled out for dangerous play from Matt Drage.

Surrey snap up England hopeful Stoneman SURREY CCC this week announced the signing of Mark Stoneman from Division One rivals Durham.

Since 2013, Stoneman has scored more than 1,000 first-class runs each season, form that has put him on the fringes of selection for England.

He is a left-handed batsman who represented England in the 2006 U19 Cricket World Cup.

Newcastle-born Stoneman will officially join Surrey when his contract with Durham expires and he will be available for the start of the 2017 season.

Stoneman made his debut for Durham in 2007 and has played in three championship-winning sides.

He was also captain when they won the One-Day Cup in 2014.

Stoneman, 29, is hoping the move will boost his chances of an England call-up.

He told Surrey’s official website: “Joining Surrey under the guidance of long-time mentor Michael Di Venuto and Alec Stewart will provide the platform to reach new levels with my batting.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to join a young and exciting squad. I am very excited for the years ahead at the Kia Oval, which is a great Test Match venue. I hope my experience

can contribute to a period of success for Surrey CCC. “The desire to play for England is as strong as it has ever been and I feel that now is the right time to accept a new challenge in an environment which will hopefully see me fulfil the dream of playing for England.”

Surrey CCC Director of Cricket Stewart revealed they fought off competition to snap up Stoneman.

Stewart said: “I am very pleased Mark has signed for Surrey as I was aware a number of other counties were chasing him too. He is exactly the type of character and player I feel will add strength and depth to our squad.

“Our head coach Michael Di Venuto knows Mark very well from his own playing days at Durham and that was a major factor in Mark choosing the Kia Oval.”

MILLWALL CAME from behind for the first time in preseason to beat Crawley 3-2 at Broadfield Stadium last Saturday.

After a sluggish first half the Lions found themselves trailing 2-1 at the break after Lee Gregory’s opener was cancelled out by Enzio Boldewijn before Jordan Roberts put Crawley ahead ten minutes before the break.

But Millwall upped the tempo in the second half and goals from Shaun Williams and Steve Morison secured a third successive preseason win.

There were almost 500 Millwall fans at a hot Broadfield Stadium and they would have been encouraged by how their side finished the game playing at a much higher tempo after the injection of attacking energy provided by substitutes Shane Ferguson, Fred Onyedinma and David Worrall.

Fergsuon, playing for the first time in pre-season, set up Williams in the 67th minute with a perfectly flighted free-kick that the Irishman powered over Crawley goalkeeper Mitchell Beeney.

Morison’s winner was even better, the striker connecting with Ferguson’s cross from the left wing to power a header past Beeney into the bottom corner.

In the 19th minute Morison was the provider when he crossed from the right for strike partner Gregory to head home.

Lions boss Neil Harris would have been concerned with how easily his side conceded. Boldewijn was given too much time to turn inside in the box and shoot leftfooted past Jordan Archer. Then James Collins muscled his way past Byron Webster and squared for Roberts who tapped into an empty net.

But there were plenty of reasons for optimism. Onyedinma again played up front and he looks to have bulked up physically over the summer. His pace and directness through the centre will give Millwall a new threat this season.

Worrall was always eager to burst forward, and he tested Beeney with a drive from 25 yards before Morison had the final say.

Captain ‘humbled’ to get testimonial EXCLUSIVE

TONY CRAIG has pulled on the Millwall shirt in its different styles 256 times in competitive fixtures.

There have been eight goals to go with countless injuries, Wembley heartbreak and joy and numerous different managers This Saturday, Millwall fans, many of whom will be clad in this season’s shirt that commemorates the 59-game unbeaten home run 50 years ago, will get to show their appreciation for their club captain.

The one shirt that could have meant most to Craig was one he didn’t actually get to wear. In fact, he was playing at The Den when the opponents were wearing it.

On November 8, 2014, the year that marked the 100th anniversary of

World War 1, Millwall wore a commemorative kit against Brentford, the team that Craig was playing for.

This Saturday, Craig will play face Brentford in his testimonial and is donating part of the proceeds to Headley Court, the military rehabilitation centre he visited a number of weeks ago to meet recovering army personnel.

Brentford won 3-2 in that fixture in 2014 in the Championship, a season that ended in relegation for Craig’s beloved Lions.

“I remember that day clearly,” Craig said. “It was the most nervous I've been before a football game. I went out and my wife said I'd been quiet in the days leading up to it. I said I hadn't been this nervous before. It was the first time back at The Den. I had my mates abusing me the night before over texts.

“I never thought I'd come back with the visiting team. I'm glad to have been a part of that day. I was so

pleased and honoured to be a part of it. It was a great game and a great day for Millwall as they got a lot of good press on and off the pitch which was the most important thing.”

So how will he feel stepping onto the Den pitch on Saturday in Millwall’s last pre-season friendly?

“There will be nerves but not many players get a testimonial at this age,” Craig, 31, said. “It's a major honour. I remember sitting in Cold Blow Lane as a kid and going to the away games.

It was a dream come true to play for them, score a goal and to get a testimonial was beyond my wildest dreams.

“I've been told by people to enjoy the day. I want to thank the people who got me there and put their time and effort into me. They gave me a chance. You need that luck and that chance. There are people who gave it to me. I'm humbled. I've had a career and I'm living the dream.

about that. People are going to rate you and hate you but I'm living day by day. I'm enjoying my family and everything like that.”

Craig re-joined Millwall in the summer of 2015 after two years with the Bees. He is still in contact with former team-mates Alan McCormack, Jake Bidwell and Harely Dean who, he says, used to give him stick as after every game he was checking for Millwall’s result.

So when Neil Harris picked up the phone a year ago, Craig didn’t hesitate in making a decision.

“As soon as I knew the interest from Millwall there was only one club I was going to go to,” Craig said. “I'd never say no to them. I've made it clear what I think of this club and everyone at Brentford knew it. They were signing all sorts of different players. When I knew there was the opportunity to go back it was easier for myself and my family.

“But I hold fond memories there, too.”

THIS WAS a useful encounter for Millwall, if only to tell Neil Harris some of his young players still have some way to go to force their way into the first team.

The Millwall boss admitted afterwards he had taken a less hands-on approach to give his young side the opportunity to work out the puzzles on the pitch themselves, but they couldn’t quite subdue a physically powerful Dover side.

Millwall’s young side taught harsh lesson

Harris won’t worry about Millwall’s first defeat of pre-season. He named a side with just two players – Shane Ferguson and Gregg Wylde – over the age of 21, with six other players yet to make their senior competitive first-team debuts.

Dover, who finished fifth in the National League last season before losing in the play-offs, were more experienced and far more rugged.

Fred Onyedinma and Jamie Philpot started up front together and rarely will they get a better lesson of how lowerleague centre-backs don’t do compromise when the ball is in the vicinity. Onyedinma was the one dropping deep, and though he did well to hold up the ball he needed more support around him.

Harris could be happy with the performance of goalkeeper Tom King, but that is hardly an endorsement of the performance at Crabble Athletic Ground.

King kept the score down with at least three superb saves when it seemed Dover

would profit from some uncertainty in the away defence.

Paul Rooney, who partnered Sid Nelson at centre-back, started just one senior game for Dublin side Bohemians before his move to Millwall, and though he was troubled by the pace of Ricky Miller experiences like this will accustom him to the higher standards of league football in England. Rooney is a big presence at the back but he probably needs to shed a few pounds before testing himself against League One’s best.

But he is confident on the ball as one burst forward in the first half showed.

After sliding bravely in to take possession from Jim Stevenson he strode forward, side-stepped a defender, but dragged a left-footed shot just wide.

That was Millwall’s only real effort in the first half, and their only half-chance after the break came from Nelson, who found space to advance towards Dover’s penalty area before shooting off target.

Dover created more clear-cut opportunities. King clawed Stevenson’s

drive over the bar in the 20th minute. Just before half-time King had to deal with an awkward cross from Aswad Thomas and just managed to palm the ball off the line.

But King, who spent time in the National League with Braintree last season, was finally beaten in the 61st minute. With trialist Harry Smith, Alfie Pavey and Noah Chesmain waiting to come on, Tyrone Marsh swung over a corner and Miller headed home.

Smith and Pavey gave Millwall more height up front, but the service from midfield was non-existent. Kyron Farrell and Harry Donovan are an inexperienced duo and Harris spoke afterwards about the need for bravery on the ball. Smith, meanwhile, will get another chance at Greenwich Borough on Friday.

Dover weren’t satisfied to sit back on their lead, sensing there were more goals in it against Millwall’s young side. King got down low to save Stevenson’s shot, before he produced an even better stop after he saw the ball late from a drive from the same player.

The most positive notes of the evening were after the introduction of defender Dan McNamara, who is still on scholarship terms. He immediately gave Millwall pace, thrust and aggression from right-back and he looks a real prospect for the future.

But there was one last painful lesson for this young side nine minutes from time when they gave Jamie Grimes too much time and space in the box to head in Dover’s second.

Attacker is relishing his new role

FRED ONYEDINMA is ready for the challenge of leading the line for Millwall this season.

Onyedinma has added another feather to his attacking bow in pre-season with stints up front, where his manager Neil Harris intends to use him off the bench in games to give Millwall more unpredictability, pace and directness.

Nineteen-year-old Onyedinma partnered Jamie Philpot in attack against Dover on Tuesday night, but both found it tough going against a more experienced Dover back three.

Onyedinma, however, sees it as another important step in his development and

another way he can help the team.

“It was physical and the manager told us it would be before the game,” Onyedinma said. “We had to prepare for that. It was good preparation, you’re going to get that in league football. I can use my body well to hold up the ball and if we need it I’m quite good at that.

“I thought we did okay, I got more minutes under my belt and I’m just trying the get fit for the start of the season.

“The manager spoke about that role last season, it is a new thing for me even though I played there for Wycombe a couple of seasons ago. But I’m still trying to learn the ropes and see where it takes me.

“I don’t really mind where I play as long as I’m playing or improving and showing what I can do. If that’s up front

Harris admitted after the 2-0 defeat to the National League side that he had deliberately given the players fewer instructions before the game to see how they would react to the opposition and what decisions they would make.

And Onyedinma stressed players need to embrace that kind of approach and realise it’s up to them to process what occurs on the pitch and react to it.

Onyedinma explained: “We’re all professional. Eeven though it’s (management’s) job to help us we should try to work it out on the pitch. Things like that help you because in a game you have an idea what’s going to go on but you never know exactly what’s going to happen, so it’s a good test for us.

“There are a lot of good players coming

through. That’s the thing with the manager, if you play well in games like this he will have no problem playing you.”

With Tony Craig’s testimonial against Brentford next week the last first-team pre-season friendly before the start of the league campaign, Onyedinma is getting closer to full match sharpness.

And he hopes that the effort put in now will help during the winter slog.

“When you get down to the hard work and everyone is doing it together you just get through it,” Onyedinma said.

“When it’s that December/January period you have to keep going, so it’s important to be fit for the season.

“It’s coming quick so we just need to get as ready as we can and win the first game.”

Meanwhile, Craig will pick the best Millwall side he has played with in Saturday’s match programme.

Former Millwall captain Alan Dunne named Craig on his all-time XI in his autobiography, and fans will get to see if Craig returns the favour this weekend.

“I’ll have a Millwall XI in the programme,” Craig said. “I’ve been very lucky to play with some very talented players, young and old. There are some players I’ve learned a lot more from than others. There have been some great people and some great friends I’ve made over my career.”

And though it is his testimonial, Craig has no intention of winding down his career.

“I’m still only 31, which in some cases is old, but I still feel young. I had my rest last season when I was out for six months through injury.”

Last season: Millwall – 4th (Beaten League One

The 16-year right-back came on as a sub for Millwall against Dover on Tuesday night and showed glimpses of a potentially brilliant talent.

McNamara is still a scholar, having signed a two-year deal in April 2015.

In fourteen minutes on the pitch McNamara showed a mature positional sense and one burst down the right to win a free-kick demonstrated his poise and pace.

And boss Neil Harris believes McNamara deserves his first-team chance.

“We’re blessed with talent coming through in the full-back area with Mahlon Romeo, James Brown, Noah Chesmain,” Harris said. “Young McNamara came on and was positive.

“These are guys we’re trying to bring through and it’s nice to involve them. Dan did well in the youth team at the end of last season and the start of pre-season so he had earned the right to come.

“Players aren’t just afforded the right to come into the first-team environment, they have to earn that right.

“Dan has done that.”

TONY CRAIG says he will have “no friends” on the Brentford side come kick-off in his testimonial at The Den this Saturday.

Craig played 127 times for the Bees in three seasons before joining Millwall for a fourth time last summer.

The Lions club captain still has a number of friends at the club, but, as is

sometimes the case in testimonials, he won’t be playing a half for each side with manager Neil Harris is set to name close to his first-choice starting XI for the first-team’s final pre-season fixture.

“It's a serious friendly. I played for both clubs but I'll only be playing for Millwall,” Craig said. “I won't be putting a Brentford kit on. There'll be a lot of friendly faces there. Hopefully I'll have some good support from Brentford coming down. I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to the fans as I left in the off-season, so it'll be nice to say goodbye.

MILLWALL WILL continue to assess striker Harry Smith, who has played two pre-season games on trial at the club.

Smith, who helped Folkestone Invicta to promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division (the seventh level of the English football league system) last season, got an assist in the 2-1 win at Dulwich Hamlet last Saturday.

Jamie Philpot against Dover on Tuesday night.

Smith gave Millwall more of a physical presence up front against a strong Dover defence.

Neil Harris will be at the DGS Marine Stadium this week to watch a Millwall XI side coached by Justin Skinner take on former Lions striker Gary Alexander’s Greenwich Borough.

Smith could get more time in his next outing as he bids to earn a deal with the club, but Harris warned there is a big gap in quality between the division he currently plays in and the third tier of English football.

“He will probably feature against

Greenwich on Friday night, and we will speak to him next weekend,” Harris said.

“There’s a massive gulf between the level he’s playing at at the moment, to going into League One. We have to look at the boy’s needs and where his development is.

“But he’s got a lovely touch of the football and his aerial ability is there as well. He’s definitely got good attributes and we’ll be patient with our decision.

“There is a lot of demand on the player to go (on trial) to other places.

He is enjoying his time with us and is committed to us at the moment.

“We’ll see him again on Friday.”

Meanwhile, left-back Joe Martin could feature for the first time in preseason for a Millwall XI against Welling next week.

Martin has been out since going off with a calf injury in the first-half of the play-off final defeat against Barnsley in May. Martin returned to first-team training this week.

“Joe Martin will look to get 45 minutes at Welling,” Harris said. “It will be a welcome return to the squad.

We’ve got a lot of experienced players at the club and a lot of youth as well.

“To have Joe back in that middle age group will be really good for us. He’s added some quality to training.”

King, 21, has enjoyed a solid preseason and made a number of impressive saves against Dover Athletic on Tuesday night despite Millwall losing 2-0.

King spent most of last season on loan at Welling and then Braintree in the National League, keeping nine clean sheets in eighteen games for the latter.

Harris signed King when he was the manager of the U21s, but the goalkeeper has a tough task ahead if he is to dislodge either Jordan Archer or David Forde.

Harris praised the attitude of his current third-choice keeper and believes King is showing signs of his ability and potential in pre-season.

“I really like Kingy,” Harris said.

“He did really well out on loan last year and there has been a lot of interest in taking him from us.

“He has a real bright future, I hope.

We took him in a couple of years ago, it was my decision to bring him in to have a look at him.

“He’s got a lot of rough edges that he is working really hard at and he works every day with Jordan and Fordey and KP (Kevin Pressman).

He’s got a good work ethic.

“That’s starting to bear fruit now.

He’s certainly one we’ve got big hopes for the future to push the other fellows. He communicates really well for such a young goalkeeper and he’s desperate to play in my first team at some stage.”

Meanwhile, Millwall have been drawn alongside West Brom (U21s), Luton and Gillingham in the EFL Trophy.
