ll locals who have their roots in Bermondsey will know Danny Baker. Some of us will have gone to school with him, some of us will have grown up on the Silwood Estate with him, others will have known him from his DJing days in local pubs or via his diverse career that has taken in journalism, TV presenting, and a wideranging radio presence that has included playing records at one end of the spectrum and sport at the other, with an array of broadcasting paraphernalia in between that made him unmissable. Not everyone ‘got’ Baker but still had to listen because he was nothing like anyone else. For me his most memorable moment was on BBC London when, just as he went on air the day after he won an award for radio, he was told his show was being cut. What followed was the best three hours of radio I can remember as he relentlessly tore into his BBC bosses. One aspect of Danny’s life that not everyone is aware of is his prolific writing. After a few weeks on the reception desk at the New Musical Express offices he was writing articles for the paper. Soon after he found himself in New York interviewing John Lennon! It is episodes like that which have formed his life: right place, right time, with nothing planned out for the future. He definitely didn’t factor in the cancer that took him away from the spotlight

Cradle to the Stage - photo by Steve Ullathorne
“I only wanted to do one cradle to the stage show but that became 5, then 10, 20, 40, 60 shows, from cumbria down to the isle of wight” for a while, but we, united as one, gave an all-embracing sigh of relief when he got the all clear after treatment. Post-cancer he wrote three volumes of autobiography, the first of which became Cradle to the Grave, a six-part sitcom that gained him fans who were not aware of his earlier work. Two years ago, however, Danny revealed to all his Twitter followers that he would retire at 60. I for one didn’t believe it; he seemed to be having so much fun that it couldn’t even be counted as ‘work’. Since that ‘retirement’ he has toured the UK with his successful one man show, Cradle to the Stage, that took his books out into the theatre, and has also teamed up with Gary Lineker to create a twin striker partnership for their podcast, Behind Closed Doors. Now there is a new tour - Good Time Charlie’s Back and was surprised to hear that he had no plans for ever doing something like this: ‘I was trying to retire so we could go out to Portugal and live on the beach,’ he begins before telling me how he wanted to finish off by ‘getting a few quid from doing “I’m A Celebrity…” I only wanted to do one Cradle to the Stage show but that became 5, then 10, 20, 40, 60 shows, from Cumbria down to the Isle of Wight… The audiences loved it, I loved it, but my wife was drumming her fingers and asking when we were buggering off to Portugal.’ However, the theatre bug had bitten so this second tour, with another 60 dates booked, will fill in the gaps left gaping from the first tour. ‘And there will probably be a third,’ he hints. When touring, Danny spaces the dates and venues so

that he can get back home to his beloved family regularly. ‘There’s just me in a van with a driver named Giles,’ he says. ‘He picks me up, takes me to the gig, then we stay in a good hotel, have a bottle of wine, sleep, have breakfast and get on the road to the next one.’ Each show is played pretty much off the cuff, although Danny has some specific tried and tested stories that he always uses. He recounted one favourite of being shot with an air gun - twice - in Bermondsey by West Ham fans. I’ve read it in his book but hearing it ‘live’ is even more hilarious. He uses photos to get the anecdotes rolling and although he has over 40 images to hand, he has never used more than 8 in a show. He knows what works and has become adept at timing his performances so they don’t run over after he saw two-thirds of his Bromley audience leave - mid story - towards the end: ‘The car park closes in a minute, shouted one to a bemused Mr Baker. His shows are relatable to anyone anywhere. ‘They are working class stories which are very familiar to anyone who lived and went to school in places like us,’ he tells me while explaining why the performances are appreciated and sold out - all over the UK. The touring shows allow him to be himself without the restrictions of broadcasting regulations, and I sense that he feels that this is a real highlight in his eclectic career. He has no producer in his earpiece telling him to cut, finish, or stop a certain line of thought. Here the leash is off. It is like his whole life was meant to lead to this. ‘Gary Lineker rung me up and left a load of messages on my phone that I came home from holiday to; the final unanswered message saying, “I suppose that’s a no, then!” I didn’t know what he was talking about.’ Checking through he found that he was being asked to do a podcast with the Match of the Day man. ‘I’d never wanted to do a podcast before as there’s no money in them, apparently, but it went straight to Number One in the podcast charts!’ The deadly duo have now taken their show on the road with a couple of gigs booked, ‘and that’s gonna turn into a tour, I suspect,’ adds Danny. ‘So Wendy’s still saying, “When are we going to live on a beach?”’ Millwall’s most famous fan had to tell his wife, ‘I don’t know,’ and readily admits, the podcast was ‘like everything else in my life over the last 40 odd years, something I never knew was coming round the corner.’ I asked about a next book. ‘Yes, Going Round the Houses will be all the stories I never told in the other ones… I might be sitting round a table talking and think, “Ooh, I’ve not done that story”, and make a note to put it in.’ Another surprise success was the children’s book Danny wrote, Lucie Goose, which has done well in all the English-speaking countries, like the autobiographies, but remarkably well in ‘Germany, Finland and Italy… If China buy it,’ he jokes, ‘I’m gonna buy a solid gold house on a hill!’ For now, though, the tour and podcast is stopping the Bakers going off to live by the sea - The move that Danny calls his ‘Third and Final Act’. He reveals he finds it difficult when ‘people keep saying to me, “Come and have a go at this.” So what do you do? Every time I think I’m going to pull up the stumps and say “That’ll do” something else comes up’. Jack the PR man gave a one minute warning so I asked for some last words. ’There will be another children’s book; Cradle to the Grave will return and Good Time Charlie’s Back will continue to visit towns around Britain.’ Danny Baker, we salute you, Sir. Stockwell Playhouse announces rare UK showing of Tennessee Williams’ classic
T
oday The LOST Theatre Company announced their next production, reviving Tennessee Williams’ classic tale, Orpheus Descending. The production will be at The Stockwell Playhouse for a strictly limited run from 15th May – 18th May 2019. Based on the Greek Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the story focuses on Lady Torrence, trapped in a loveless marriage, in a small town with traditional values. However, the arrival of the wild-eyed and charismatic Val suddenly brings with it a new lease of life, full of passion where new things seem possible. Everything will change as certainty, conformity and tradition are ripped apart. This work is rarely performed in the UK, especially in London and will be directed by Marcus Marsh, Associate Director at Stockwell Playhouse and Artistic Director of Blueleaf Theatre. Set design will be by Mark Magill, Artistic Director of Stockwell Playhouse with lighting by Martin John Bristow. On the announcement Marsh said “It is a fantastic opportunity that we have been given to bring

cclaimed Aussie circus company Gravity & Other Myths are headlining this summer’s Underbelly Festival with a brand new cast for their contemporary circus show A Simple Space. The Weekender talks to the wonders from Down Under. Are you excited to return to London for the summer? This will be the company’s third season with Underbelly Festival in London. We can’t wait! What has Gravity and Other Myths (GOM) been up to this past year? This past year has been a massive one for GOM! The company turned 10, we have had two shows, Backbone and A Simple Space, touring simultaneously for the first time ever and we premiered our third show as part of the 2019 Adelaide Festival. Tell us about A Simple Space. What can audiences expect? Audiences are invited to spend an hour immersed in a show that earnestly breaks down the wall between the public and performer, refreshingly redefining what contemporary circus can be. Together, seven acrobats and one musician own the stage with nothing but their bodies, remarkable trust and the daring desire to experiment, fail and succeed at pushing themselves to their physical limits. At its core, A Simple Space fuses elements of challenge, improvisation, relatable games and skilful acrobatic choreography. How many people are in the ensemble? Gravity & Other Myths has a powerful ensemble of 25 acrobats and 5 musicians. Within this show, A Simple Space, there are just seven acrobats and one musician. Is there a distinctive style to Australian circus? Or would you say your influences are very international? It’s definitely a harmonious mix. Australian circus implements its own style in the execution of specific physical techniques, grounded artistic delivery and the strong ability to establish a sincere connection with the audience. The Australian circus community is a very dynamic, awesome and tight knit hub but relative to our location and opportunities within the arts here, we are often enticed and encouraged to engage internationally. We are constantly inspired and influenced by the international industry, but it’s also imperative at our core to remain humble to the roots of our Australian circus community and pride ourselves on nurturing that honest GOM flavour. A Simple Space is at Underbelly Festival, Belvedere Road Coach Park, SE1 8XX, until May 5. Tickets: £19. Phone: 0844 545 8252. www.underbellyfestival.com

Fiyahouse’s world premiere Laura Burgoine
S
treatham local Brooke Milliner’s collective Fiyahouse is performing the world premiere of its new show at renowned dance festival Breakin’ Conven-
tion. A Sadler’s Wells Project, the international festival, now in its 16th year, showcases the finest and most exciting hip hop dance and theatre talent. A former British trampoline champion, Brooke is best known as the choreographer and lead dancer of the crew Plague, while he and long-term collaborator Dickson Mbi founded Fiyahouse together, which is made up of London’s leading poppers. “This is our first show together; there’s five of us in the poppin’ crew,” Brooke told the Weekender. “We don’t do traditional poppin’. Usually as a crew we do poppin’ battles and videos but this is different because we’re showing a story. It’s more likely to be an individual battle.
Poppin’ comes from the streets, in the clubs, on stage; it started in California in the ‘70s and came to England in the ‘80s. Mainly this particular crew got together to do battles.” Poppin’ is one of the biggest street dance styles. “It’s very tiring. You’re consistently contracting muscles. It’s a super technical dance,” Brooke said. Brooke started his dance career with jazz and contemporary then moved onto breakin’ and poppin’ before specialising in locking. “A lot of street dancers do it that way. Breakin’ is the thing that you see most, even if you’re not a dancer, you know you can spin on your back. Breakdancing has the biggest community.” Brooke’s crew regularly perform in adverts and television shows. “I was dancing for Taylor Swift at the Brit Awards,” he said. “We just deal with the choreographer and then Taylor would come in for an hour or two and run
her bit. She didn’t spend that much time with us. There was 20 dancers, four poppers, and we had our section with her and made her do something that was kind of cool. She was nice.” Growing up in Streatham, Brooke attended Emmanuel primary school then Harris tech before studying at the BRIT School for Performing Arts and later Bird College of Dance. He still lives in Streatham and mainly rehearses at home. “If I’m practising for myself I just need my mirror. If I need a space, I go to Husky studios in Elephant and Castle.” The Fiyahouse studio launched in Vauxhall a year ago and is open to anyone. The crew teach classes and charge £5 for three hours. Fiyahouse are performing at Breakin’ Convention at Sadler’s Wells and Lillian Baylis Studio, EC1R 4TN, on May 3-5. Tickets: £15-£30. Phone: 020 7863 8000. www.sadlerswells.com

n a first ever collaboration, the English National Opera and the Unicorn join forces in presenting Dido, a contemporary staging of Purcell’s powerful and emotionally charged masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, for young audiences. Belinda is the only child of Dido. A teenager like any other, in any big city. We watch through her eyes as her mother – heroine, feminist icon, modern parent – slowly starts to fall apart, with tragic consequences. The Unicorn’s former Artistic Director Purni Morell directs a company of twenty-two that includes three principal singers: Rachael Lloyd as Dido, Njabulo Madlala as Aeneas and Eyra Norman as Belinda. They will be performing with a chorus of twelve and seven musicians from the ENO orchestra, in this searing new production for teenagers and adults, conducted by Valentina Peleggi – the ENO Mackerras Conducting Fellow. Purcell for a young audience Michael Holland
in 1689, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is one of the most admired operas in the English canon – a timeless and tragic story of love, suffering and isolation set to some of the most sublime and exquisite music ever written. This production, faithful to the Baroque score, refocuses the piece so that it is seen through Belinda’s eyes and the epic story is brought into contemporary relief in all its visceral truth. For some this will be a chance to see a familiar and much-loved opera in a new light, while for many in its young audience it will be an incredible first experience of a classic. Dido is designed by Khadija Raza, a finalist of the Linbury Prize 2017. Dido is on at Unicorn Theatre 147 Tooley Street, London SE1 2HZ from 11May- 2 June. Times: 7pm; matinees 2pm. Admission: £8 - £24. Suitable for age 11 and upwards. Duration: approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. Phone: 020 7645 0560. www.unicorntheatre.com

ith so much variety in the opportunities to enjoy life these days, the get up and go out people are always looking for that something extra, that something with a difference, so this new underground silent movie venue - Down the Shaft - will tick that box. Midnight Apothecary, the award-winning pop-up campfire cocktail bar that has built up quite a reputation from the rooftop of the Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe since 2012, has launched an exciting new film club directly beneath its garden in one of London’s most secret and unusual underground venues, the Victorian underground Grand Entrance Hall to Brunel’s Thames Tunnel. ‘Down the Shaft Film Club’ launches its season on Thursday 2 May with some classic silent cinema featuring local Southwark icon, pioneer and hero Charlie Chaplin, as well as two Laurel & Hardy shorts, and all three films accompanied on grand piano by the virtuoso talents of the UK’s leading silent film piano accompanists Meg Morley (2 May) and Neil Brand (16 May). You can look forward to Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Easy Street’ (1917) a Laurel & Hardy’s ‘Big Business’ (1929) and ‘Liberty’ (1929). Truly one of Charlie Chaplin’s finest and most enduring short films, Easy Street sees Chaplin playing The Little Tramp who becomes a police constable who must fight a huge thug that dominates an inner-city street. The look and feel of ‘Easy Street’ evokes the South London of Charlie Chaplin’s childhood, with some stating that Easy Street could be Walworth’s East Street - the street near his birthplace. It’s a film that walks a fine line between humour and pathos. Unlike the athletic antics of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy’s based their comedy around mannerisms,

reactions and silly situations, But in ‘Liberty’ (1929) we find them out of their depth quite literally, high above the city in a half built skyscraper. Liberty was one of Laurel & Hardy’s last silent films, and to many fans their funniest ever film. This film has it all. With the police hot on their tail as two escaped convicts, Stan and Ollie attempt to change clothes in their getaway car only to find themselves struggling to balance on top of the girders of an unfinished building. They were comedic geniuses and this film shows them at the peak of their game. Big Business (1929) finds the duo as Christmas tree salesmen trying to sell their wares door to door in California in the summer. It is many people’s favourite Laurel & Hardy silent film. Lottie Muir, founder of Midnight Apothecary, said: ‘Midnight Apothecary is a celebration of wild cocktails, campfire and camaraderie in the city. What better way to spend the evening than enjoying some fireside merriment in an enchanted candle-lit roof garden before descending underground into a unique historic venue to celebrate the work of local Southwark legend Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy” Guests are invited to arrive from 6pm for campfire, wild cocktails, local beer, hot toddies and sizzling seasonal street food (not included in the price of the ticket) in the candle-lit secret roof garden. They will descend underground at 7.30pm for the films. The campfire, complimentary toasted marshmallows and streetfood will be available before and between the films. Brunel Museum, Railway Avenue, SE16 4Lf. May 2 and 16 at 7:30pm. Admission: £25. Numbers are strictly limited. Tickets: www.themidnightapothecary.co.uk

he Dulwich Festival returns this month with a smorgasbord of art, music, theatre, literature and walks.
This year’s theme is ‘belonging’. As always the Festival celebrates the local artistic community, with the everpopular Artists’ Open House taking place across both weekends when over 200 artists invite the public into their homes and studios, providing an up close and personal dialogue and insight into their art. The Festival embraces the local history and architecture as local treasures such as the Dulwich Picture Gallery, Bell House, Dulwich College and Christ Chapel, amongst others, play host to events. For music lovers, the Harlem Meer Cats are back, recreating music heard at the Cotton Club in the ‘20s and ‘30s, including hits of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. The ever-popular festival Ceilidh returns, along with the Festival of Choirs, and Adam Norsworthy, who returns to Dulwich Festival after two previous sold-out shows. Regarded by many as one of the country’s finest blues singer-songwriters, he will be playing a first set with LSO second violinist Tom Norris and then a full band set with his group The Mustangs, one of the UK’s most established Blues bands. At over 400 years old, Christ’s Chapel is one of the hidden gems in Dulwich and will be hosting a Chapel Organ open afternoon, featuring the exquisite organ built in 1759 and thought to be the oldest surviving example of the famous organ builders, George England’s, work. Acclaimed ensemble Onyx Brass is also performing at the alluring venue.
JOIN IN THE FESTIVAL For literary lovers, join a discussion with the editors of Words in Pain, Jocelyn Catty and Trevor Moore, with readings from their embellished centenary edition of the collected letters of Olga Jacoby, a writer, thinker and rationalist who wrote them ‘under the sentence of death’ due to a terminal heart condition. The proceedings take place in the elegant setting of Bell House. For younger members of the community the children’s art competition and concert return, while Kingsdale will play host again to the Youth Concert where local schools/ music groups showcase their incredibly talented young musicians. Award-winning children’s theatre is on offer at St Barnabas Parish Hall with the fantastical tale of Tommy Foggo – Superhero - a magical multi-media tale of a life saved by music based on a true story. The Festival Fair on Goose Green provides fun for all the family with a wide range of stalls and activities, including the cheerful community chain of pom-poms and the much- loved donkey rides. The Love West Dulwich and Dulwich Park Fairs take place on the final weekend of the Festival. For another family friendly outing, join the London wildlife Trust for a spring orchard tree care event and picnic. Continued p25 Photo: Benjamin Ealovega

The orchard is being developed by The Dulwich Estate to mark 400 years since Edward Alleyn founded a school, chapel and almshouse in Dulwich. The day promises nature-themed activities for all. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of Burbage Road’s namesake, Richard Burbage, local artist Lionel Stanhope is creating a mural of the actor, artist and co-founder of the Globe theatre. Feast fit for a king Venture to The Vaults for an immersive Game of Thrones banquet Michael Holland
W
e were very excited about the Game of Thrones’ Dinner is Coming feast, based around the award-winning series. The audience sat at tables replete with wine and were introduced to the newly wed king and queen just as a gift of wine was delivered from afar to celebrate the match. Alas, the wine was poisoned and the king died. Us commoners now had to work out who killed the king, who was plotting against the king and we also had to choose the best House to be in, and all while enjoying a feast fit for a, er, king! First up was Wildfire Bouillon, a green pea and garlic soup with asparagus, lemonverbena jelly, mint leaves, red radish and lava beans. The soup was quite amazing. In fact, truly wonderful. Margarine, the beautiful daughter of the noble Trywell family, mingled with diners convincing us that she had nothing to do with the murder, as did the Lady of Taragon and other assorted reprobates all vying for our vote. As the wine flowed so

did the lies and treachery. Before each course there would be speeches from the candidates that we would analyse and rip apart for motive or clues. As we changed our minds so we changed our allegiances. Dinner was served. The King’s Feast comprised of Spiced Cauliflower, Crispy Chicken Wings, Mixed Bean and Potato Pie, Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder, Roast Potatoes, Egmont Carrots and a green salad of courgette, lettuce, beetroot, peas, parsley and pesto dressing. The lamb is the tenderest I have had in living memory. Fiona, a vegetarian, gave high praise for the bean and potato dish and tucked in to the salad while us carnivores at the banquet were like a wolf pack around the meat. The wine still flowed as a smiling assassin mingled amongst us. He struck and the Man from the Far North was slain for calling us Soft Southerners just one time too many. Two deaths so far. More speeches turned attention and suspicion to the widow, though most
deemed her far too pretty to be a killer. Dessert - A Scarlet Ending - was served. Pear poached in Red Wine, Cinnamon and Star Anise left our lips blood red. The Sweet and Sour Cream accompaniment was a metaphor for all the looks and leers
from the guilty conspirators. We now had to make our final choice for a new king or queen. Plus, the murderer was revealed. I was right with my choice of King Slayer, but Fiona had not taken her own advice and had allowed herself to be lured away to another house. The night came to a close amid cheers and boos, which continued all the way home in the car. ‘Send me victorious,’ I sang for my own benefit. ‘Happy and Glorious,’ I continued until the back of Fiona’s hand caught me squarely on the nose. Dinner is Coming is a parody of the popular series and has been timed to coincide with the beginning of the final series. This theatre and dinner combination is great fun whether you are a fan of the show or not. Until 2nd June 2019 at The Vaults, Leake Street London SE1 7NN General Admission: £35 - £55. Suitable for Ages 18+ contains violence, strong language and dragons. www.dinneriscoming.com
