Do we have an emergency in our ambulance service?

HE SHOCKING assault on pregnant Malorie Bantala in Peckham last week has left the whole community reeling.

After the horrifying details of the attack itself were released by the police last week, yet another shock came with the revelation that the 21-year-old was lying in the road for well over an hour waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) apologised after it was revealed that one of the victim’s neighbours dialled 999 at 8.16pm, but when an ambulance had still not arrived 70 minutes later, the police were forced to cancel the call and Malorie was finally rushed to hospital in the back of a squad car.

Despite the best efforts of the hospital staff she tragically lost her baby, just eight weeks away from her due date.

It appears the initial emergency call was assessed to be ‘low priority’ for some reason, which put Malorie in a queue behind other cases, thought to be more urgent. If this is the case the investigation launched by the LAS needs to look into how the set questions asked by the emergency call centre staff can lead to a patient like Malorie being wrongly categorised in this way.

Difficulties correctly assessing the urgency of calls is only one of the problems currently facing the stretched service.

LAS statistics show that over the last six months it has consistently failed to meet its own response time targets in Southwark.

Any calls logged as ‘category A’ –where an urgent response is needed – are supposed to have an ambulance on scene within eight minutes at least 75 percent of the time.

Since November last year, ambulances responding to emergencies in Southwark have hit the eight minute target between 54 percent and 71 percent of the time. In October last year London’s Assembly member for Southwark, Val Shawcross, blamed £53million of cuts to the service for the poor response times in the borough and across the capital.

Ms Shawcross said in a statement then that delays to patients with potentially life threatening conditions “could be devastating.”

Ambulance paramedics are hardworking, caring people who must be under a great deal of strain as they struggle to carry out such a vital service in the face of budget cuts and an ageing population.

Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group says it is investing new money into London Ambulance Service to support recruitment of more paramedics.

This investment is clearly desperately needed as soon as possible, to ensure this kind of delay does not become commonplace.

Huge organ that made the Elephant Trocadero ‘one of finest cinemas in world’ nearly restored

THE LARGESTWurlitzer organ in Europe made the Trocadero in Elephant and Castle one of the finest ‘super cinemas’ in the country in its heyday.

The 1930s art deco treasure was rescued by the Cinema Organ Society before the 3,500 seater venue was demolished in 1963.

Since the 1970s it has been sitting in the shadows at the South Bank University before the £275,000 project to bring it back to life was masterminded.

It has taken five years for a team of dedicated volunteers to fully restore the 21 ranks of 1,500 pipes in the mammoth four console instrument and it is now ready to be played again at its new home - the Troxy cinema in Stepney.

Fundraising for the restoration was led by the Trocadero Wurlitzer Trust, whose patron, Denis Norden, presenter of TV’s Alright on the Night was a member of the Trocadero management team at the beginning of his showbiz career.

When the Trocadero opened in December 1930 it was a mecca for silent films which were accompanied live by organist.

Adverts from the opening describe the Trocadero as ‘Europe’s largest cinevariety theatre’ and specifically mentions the £15,000 organ as well as ‘earphones for those suffering from defective hearing’.

Cinema organs, like the Elephant’s

Wurlitzer, differed from church organs in that its pipes were designed to imitate orchestral instruments. They also included real percussions such as drums and xylophones, and the console was ornately decorated to enhance the theatrical spectacle.

The Troxy was built three years after the Trocadero by the same architects so it is a perfect home to the Wurlitzer, especially after its own pipe organ was broken up for parts in the ‘60s.

The Trocadero’s enduring star will be unveiled in ‘A Night of 1000 Pipes’ at the Troxy on August 22.

A CARER who was the victim of a vicious attack on Saturday night says he was saved by the masked vigilante known as ‘Bromley Batman’.

The mystery martial arts expert dressed all in black and wearing a bandana mask intervened with some “Jackie Chan-style moves” when three thugs set upon a 27-yearold man on his way home from a late shift at around 11.30pm.

Reports of a masked man saving helpless citizens from random attacks came to light earlier this month, with the secret saviour branded ‘Bromley Batman’. The victim of Saturday’s attack in Bermondsey, who did not wish to be named for his own safety, said the man who saved him fitted the description of the south east London superhero.

In the terrifying attack, three men blocked the stairwell as the victim tried to get up to his flat where he cares for his disabled mother. He did not wish to reveal the exact location for fear of reprisals.

The three men started making fun of him before they set upon him, hitting him in his face and on his body, leaving him with a

black eye, a cut ear, a swollen nose and bruised ribs.

“The next thing I know I heard an ‘argghhh’ and I looked up and saw a tall bearded man in a bandana mask all in black kicking one of the men to the ground with some sort of Jackie Chan style move,” said the victim.

“Then he blocked one of the others, punching him again with some sort of Bruce Lee moves and then threw one over his shoulder judo style.

“It was amazing. Then he did a spinning round kick. I was in awe of this man,” said the victim.

After taking a surprise battering, the three assailants ran away, leaving the hero to make a smooth exit as he gave the victim a tissue for his bloodied face and told him to get himself home.

The victim says his un-caped crusader was over 6ft tall with a light brown beard, a cockney accent and looked “nothing like Batman.”

After telling his mum he had just had a fall on the way home, the victim went online to see if there were any other reports of a masked man appearing as if out of nowhere to help innocent citizens under attack – “if not I would have left it alone because people would have thought I was mad,” said the victim, who would like to personally thank

‘Bromley Batman’ for his help.

“This bloke helped me and I want to say thanks to him. From what I have seen he is doing a good job so keep it up!,” he added.

The Bromley Batman has so far managed to keep his identity under wraps, only revealing that he hates the name he has been given and would prefer to be called ‘The Shadow’ after his favourite boyhood comic book character.

After saving a City worker from a violent mugging, other reports came flooding in of instances where he had intervened including rescuing a woman from a gang of would-be bag snatchers in Lewisham.

The bearded bodyguard told the Evening Standard in an anonymous email interview earlier this month that he patrols London streets most nights – despite having a day job and a family. He said: “I just want to make a difference and leave this world a tiny bit better for the younger generation to inherit.

“I got sick of seeing crime on the news and in the papers with rarely anyone willing to step in and help people in need.”

That email account has since been deactivated with the identity of the Bromley Batman remaining a mystery.

£62 million regeneration project announced for iconic arts college CAMBERWELL

A £62M regeneration project has been announced for Camberwell College of Arts, the first major work on the prestigious site in a generation.

New lecture theatres and studios will be built, along with a new gallery and library. The college’s harsh 1960s exterior will also get a facelift, with “major alterations” planned for the front façade in Peckham Road.

RIOT POLICE were called in on Sunday after immigration officers were pelted with eggs, fruit and vegetables when arresting a man for overstaying his visa.

A crowd of more than a hundred people massed around the Home Office van in East Street, which was holding a man who had been arrested at around 5pm.

Eye witnesses said frustration had been building in the area after repeated visits from Immigration Enforcement Officers last week.

After a Pakistani man was led out of AK Fishmongers and put into the van, the massing crowd started grabbing anything to hand, including eggs, fruit and vegetables, and throwing it at the vehicle in protest.

When the van was blockaded by bins and traffic cones, the police were called in for support.

Officers in full riot gear swarmed in and reported they were also hit with bottles and eggs.

spread into Thurlow Street, and another said they saw a man pick up half a paving stone as a potential projectile.

One officer was knocked unconscious after being “struck by an object thrown from the crowd,” according to a police spokesperson, who added that a police dog was also hurt and was treated at the scene.

An eye witness, who did not wish to be named, claimed it was the other way around and it was the police who were heavy handed – “literally picking up people and bicycles and flinging them out of the way” including a nine-year-old child.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of violent disorder, assault on police, criminal damage and animal cruelty and was taken to a south London police station for questioning.

This follows an incident in Peckham last month when a video captured a skirmish between immigration officers and an angry crowd as they made arrests in Rye Lane. At the time a Home Office spokesperson told the News that they stood by the arrests as they sent “a clear message” to anyone flouting the UK’s immigration laws.

HUNDREDS OF people took part in a memorial march last Friday for Tommy Blackmore, the 20-year-old who was killed following an incident near Tower Bridge earlier this month.

Mourners met at Rotherhithe Docklands Centre at 11pm and walked to Queen Elizabeth Road, where police had found the Millwall fan and youngest brother of three “critically injured” on June 13.

They sang songs, lit dozens of candles, signed a large England flag and released lanterns into the Bermondsey night sky in memory of the Rotherhithe resident. So many people brought bouquets of flowers that one person said “by the end of the night we couldn't even see the end of the pavement.”

Simon Hughes, former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, who attended the vigil, said: “The vigil on Friday night was a moving tribute to Tommy and his family and the hundreds of people who took part shows the love and respect for him.

“I hope anybody who has any relevant information about the cause of his death will contact the police immediately.”

A special mass was also held on Sunday night in Malta for friends of Tommy, who now live in the St John’s Bay area.

A 28-year-old man, Lloyd Smythe of Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, has been charged with murder.

Police hunt for second suspect after attack on pregnant woman

POLICE ARE hunting a second man thought to have been involved in a brutal assault on a pregnant woman in Peckham last week.

Officers leafleted at the scene of the ‘vile attack’, which shocked the nation after 21-year-old Malorie Bantala was set upon by two men in motorbike crash helmets in Talfourd Place, Peckham.

The university graduate was 32 weeks pregnant when the two men pushed her to the ground and continually kicked and stamped on her stomach, before they ran off in the direction of Denman Road.

A member of the public called police who administered first aid at the scene. After waiting 70 minutes for an ambulance, the police eventually took Ms Bantala to hospital in the back of a squad car.

baby. She remains in hospital in a stable condition.

One man was charged in connection with the incident and will appear at Woolwich Crown Court on July 2. Officers are now hunting the second man, believed to be in his twenties.

Investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Robert Pack, from the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "This was a vile attack which, tragically, resulted in a young woman losing her baby.

"We are still keen to trace anyone with information about the incident, and anyone who may have witnessed the assault, to contact us.

"A week has passed and the true horror of the incident should have sunk in. Someone is harbouring a very violent individual and that person does not deserve their protection."

THE COMMUNITY where Malorie Bantala lives has been ‘devastated’ by the ‘vile attack’ on her last week and has decided to create a ‘peace wall’ in support of the family.

In the spirit of the Peckham Peace Wall (inset right) created after the riots in 2011, where thousands of people posted notes of love and respect, Malorie’s wall will collect messages of support for her family from the local community.

Ms Morris is keeping in contact with Malorie’s brothers and sisters, but is keen to create a place for the rest of the estate to offer their support.

“It’s just to show them that we are here for the family in solidarity,” said Joan, who is

proud of the close-knit community of people from all backgrounds who “all get along” around the Pelican.

“We are like one big family here,” said Joan, who organises a slew of community activities each year.

Cllr Jamille Mohammed, who is assisting Joan in getting Malorie’s peace wall up and running, said: "The community is devastated by the incident and stand strong in solidarity with the victim and her family.

“I am shocked and offer my fullest sympathies,” he added.

Cllr Mohammed says the area around the Pelican Estate is “generally a very peaceful area” and that the brutal assault on Malorie last Monday evening, when two men in

motorbike helmets pushed her to the ground and repeatedly kicked and stamped on her stomach, was an “isolated incident.”

MP for Camberwell and Peckham, Harriet Harman, said she was “shocked and appalled” to hear of the assault on her constituent in a “quiet community”, resulting in the tragic loss of her unborn child. “My thoughts are with her and her family,” she said.

One man was charged in connection with the incident and will appear at Woolwich Crown Court on July 2.

Southwark have been well below target for the last six months.

Any calls logged as ‘category A’ – where an urgent response is needed – are supposed to have an ambulance on scene within eight minutes at least 75 percent of the time.

Since November last year, ambulances responding to emergencies in Southwark have hit the eight minute target between 54 percent and 71 percent of the time.

In some instances, it is claimed that patients have waited hours for an ambulance, like 84year old Joan Bird, who fell outside her home in in Owgan Close, Camberwell, in February and says she had to wait two and a quarter hours before paramedics arrived.

Concerned neighbours, like Carol Hunter, brought quilts and blankets to keep her warm while they waited. “The crew were so apologetic when they got there,” said Carol.

“They were disgusted themselves. They said they’d been on their way to us three times

but they kept getting called away.”

Joan, who is now wheelchair-bound, had broken her pelvis in three places, so Carol could not move her from where she lay. “She was in agony and nobody could move her. It was awful,” she said.

The Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), which pays for the delivery of health services in the borough, said it would be monitoring the investigation into the Malorie Bantala call out and “ensure any necessary actions are taken to reduce the chance of a similar incident occurring,” according to a spokesperson.

“We are investing new money into London Ambulance Service to support recruitment of more paramedics and to improve the national response standards.”

The LAS did not provide a comment before the News went to press.

BERMONDSEY’S NEW MP has vowed to take up the plight of a sixyear-old boy with a degenerative disease, as the NHS prepares to make its decision on whether to offer a drug which could change his life.

Neil Coyle, elected to the Bermondsey and Old Southwark seat in May, says he is going to take little Harvey Brown’s battle to parliament, starting with getting health ministers to meet the Surrey Square Primary pupil and his mum, Vikki.

Harvey has an ultra-rare degenerative disease called Morquio, which affects just 77 children in the UK. The inherited illness is caused by an enzyme deficiency, which means Harvey’s skeleton will not develop properly.

His organs will continue to grow but his weak bones won’t and he is likely to develop heart disease and breathing difficulties while gradually losing his vision and hearing.

Not that bubbly Harvey is letting that put him off dreaming of being a Millwall player.

There is currently no cure for Morquio, and, untreated, patients like Harvey rarely live beyond their twenties.

The first drug which could help Harvey live a longer, happier life is not being offered on the NHS yet, even though it was approved by the Eurpoean Medicines Agency in April last year.

Despite the trial for Vimizim being run in the UK, the life-changing drug is now being offered in ten different European countries while British children like Harvey sit and wait, deteriorating day by

The NHS is due to make an announcement next week on whether children like Harvey will get temporary access to Vimizim while the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which advises the NHS

on the drugs it can afford to offer, prepares a formal recommendation for October.

Having seen Harvey’s plight in the News, Mr Coyle decided to join the campaign to get the Bermondsey boy the help he needs.

“I am happy to help campaign for Harvey

and his family,” he said. “I have been in touch with NICE regarding their current consultation and its potential impact on families like Harvey’s.

“I will also be asking health ministers to meet Harvey and his mum to explain to them why NICE puts price before value of life for people with rare conditions.

“I hope rules will change so that, as a country, we can better support Harvey, his

mum and families like them better in future,” he added.

Harvey’s mum, Vikki Brown, 46, of Galleywall Road, said Mr Coyle’s offer of help was “amazing”.

“It’s brilliant that he’s taking an interest.

I’m so, so grateful,” she said.

CHRIS FOSTER’S mum has spoken out to condemn those who have chosen not to help police find the two men thought to have been involved in her son’s murder, in the face of a moving television appeal.

Last week’s episode of the BBC documentary series, MET Policing, featured the investigation into the 34year-old’s murder in November 2013.

The police also released a CCTV image of one of the two suspects still outstanding in the case on the day the programme aired.

Aydin Salih, captured on camera at Heathrow airport, fled to Northern Cyprus after the botched revenge attack, which led to the death of an innocent man outside St Chrisopher’s Inn in Borough High Street.

He is one of two outstanding suspects thought to have been there on the night seven hooded men set out to take revenge for a previous knife attack and ended up getting the wrong man.

When Chris was killed, he left behind his daughter Christina, then four years old, who was shown in the documentary watching as her daddy’s ashes were scattered.

Jean Foster hoped the coverage would encourage anyone who knew who the two outstanding suspects were, to come forward with information.

But this week the police have confirmed that their fresh appeal was met with a stony silence and they have not received one single call since the programme went out.

Seven Southwark stations to be served by night Tube

PARTY ANIMALS, night-shift workers and insomniacs rejoice – in just over two months, Transport for London will begin its muchanticipated night Tube service, and have now revealed which stations will stay open.

The new system, which will begin in the early hours of September 12, will see trains run through the night on Fridays and Saturdays. Five stations in Southwark will feature on the reduced night network.

Kennington on the Northern Line, and Southwark, London Bridge, Bermondsey and Canada Water on the Jubilee Line, will all stay open, with thousands of local residents set to benefit.

However, while trains will run through the night they will not be as regular as the daytime service. Trains will leave Kennington every eight minutes, and Jubilee Line stations every ten minutes.

The new service will cut night-time journeys across the capital by an average of 20 minutes, and is expected to boost the economy by £360m.

TWO SOUTHWARK school children are making their professional stage debut in the award-winning production of The Railway Children.

‘Over a thousand youngsters failed to reach expected Early Years stage’

OVER 1,000 of Southwark’s fiveyear-olds have “failed to achieve the expected level of development”, according to Dame Tessa Jowell.

According to research organised by Dame Tessa - the MP for Dulwich & West Norwood until May and now a London mayoral hopeful - one-in-three kids aged five in the borough have not achieved the standard expected by the Government’s Early Years Foundational Stage framework, a “shocking” figure.

Dame Tessa said: “We should all be shocked and galvanised to action by these figures, which tell a story too many Southwark children beginning on a path that will take them to a lifetime of inequality and denied opportunity.

“What is even more shocking is that this waste of potential can be prevented by

support for very young families and children in the first 1,000 days of their life, to ensure that when they get to school they are ready for school and ready to learn.”

The development framework measures children across five disciplines: communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy and mathematics.

Southwark’s boys particularly struggled with literacy, with nearly 40 per cent failing to reach a good level. 30 per cent of the borough’s boys also struggled with mathematics.

Tessa had previously announced a £61m-a-year fund to support development in a child’s first 1,000 days.

She said: “If I become Mayor of London I will act immediately to restore Sure Start to its founding purpose and ensure that every child has every chance.”

Nine-year-old Niamh Durkin, who goes to Alleyn’s Junior School and eleven-year-old Jayden Ukeku, who goes to Harris Primary Academy in Peckham have both joined the children’s ensemble in the critically acclaimed touring show, now based at the King’s Cross Theatre.

The two budding stars are part of a team of youngsters who alternate in the show, playing several parts in the children’s ensemble alongside comedian and actor Sean Hughes as Mr Perks and actress Caroline Harker as Mother.

Niamh described being on stage as “the most exciting and nerve-racking feeling - and the best” and said she was “thrilled” to get the part after seeing the show when it was based at Waterloo station.

Jayden said his acting debut was “like a dream come true”. When he found out he got the part he was “so excited” he couldn’t stop jumping up and down.

The York Theatre Royal production, which is in association with the National Railway Museum, features a live steam locomotive and a vintage carriage, originally built in 1896.

CONCERNED PARENTS took to the streets of Dulwich in protest this week to block a development which could lead to thousands of lorry journeys on a popular school route.

A petition to oppose The Dulwich Estate’s proposal to build nine large town houses on the site of the old SG Smith Workshops behind Dulwich Village now has 500 signatures, which will be submitted to the council before the public consultation closes on Saturday.

Father of three and Dulwich Hamlet School governor, Andy Skipwith, started the campaign to send The Dulwich Estate back to the drawing board when he realised the plans included basement ‘snugs’ and underground parking, which would require digging a hole the size of two Olympic swimming pools.

“The problem is with the size of the development,” said Mr Skipwith. “We are worried about children’s safety in regard to the construction traffic that would be involved.”

To clear out a 5,000 cubic metre basement area, Mr Skipwith estimates 2,000 heavy goods vehicle journeys would need to be made to and from the site. “They are big and heavy and travel under time pressure – it’s dangerous in terms of people getting squashed,” said Mr Skipwith, who is particularly concerned about the school children travelling to the fourteen schools in the area.

Newly elected MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, Helen Hayes, stood alongside the defiant group of parents, children and residents as they chanted ‘stop the basements, stop the trucks’ near the site before school on Tuesday morning. She has been supporting the grass-roots campaign to get landowner The Dulwich Estate to reduce the scale of the development.

would prefer smaller properties to be built in Dulwich, according to Ms Hayes, who is also a councillor for College ward.

“The need in Dulwich is not for large family homes but for smaller properties, so people who need to downsize can stay in the area,” she said.

Although some excavation will be necessary on site to remove the petrol tanks and decontaminate the soil, Ms Hayes, says the level of excavation needed to create basements under each property is “far more extensive” than would otherwise have been necessary.

“That’s a lot of construction traffic when you consider ten thousand children go to school in Dulwich every morning,” she added.

Mother of two, Celia Roberts, 47, said her six and nine-year-old were in schools either side of the proposed development, which she described as “untenable.”

“They cross this road to go for their lunch every day and they use this as a cut through all the time to get to the church.”

Chief Executive of The Dulwich Estate, John Major, told the News: “Part of the site for redevelopment was formerly a

practising playing in French ahead its Parisian debut Paris next month.

The tour is fully funded by Club Europe, a school travel company based in Balham, after the band won their Concert Tours Proud to Perform award.

The band started out as a children’s charity aimed at giving underprivileged children experience of art, music and

culture and now has more than 50 members aged between seven and fourteen. "The tour will be fantastic,” said trustee Andrew Mylius, who also plays third trumpet. “It has already given us a much greater focus, created a more animated feel to our playing and the sense of occasion as the build up to the tour is tangible."

Brass-ed off to Disneyland

THE CAPITAL’S youngest brass band is preparing to perform at Disneyland Paris as part of their first ever European tour.

Southwark Children's Brass Band, which has members as young as seven, is

petrol filling station. In order to decontaminate the site, the tanks have to be removed and there is also an existing basement under the workshop. It is for this reason that the scheme for the new homes incorporates underground parking.

“This has the benefit of removing vehicles from the street which, in the long-term, will reduce the risk to children and other pedestrians walking past the homes. The construction works will be governed by a traffic management plan which will seek to limit the movement of

heavy vehicles during the hours when children are going to and leaving from, school premises. The replacement of a car repair workshop with new homes will enhance the amenity of this residential area,” he said.

Resident starts petition to protect heritage after plans to demolish tin box factory get go ahead

OVER 700 people have signed a petition calling on Southwark Council to save a historic Bermondsey factory building and rethink its planning policy.

Earlier this month, the council approved plans to demolish the 143-year-old Tin Box Factory on Tanner Street and replace it with an eight-storey metal-clad Network Rail building.

However, Bermondsey resident Kristina Mansbridge has launched a campaign to protect the historic landmark and is urging the council to review its criteria when deciding to demolish Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

She said: “I just don’t understand the council’s attitude and their lack of

imagination. They want to knock down buildings full of history and replace them with bland, boring buildings.

“I walk past the building every day on my way to work but only realised it was to be demolished and replaced with a metal monstrosity when I saw a councillor Tweet about it. I’m really disappointed and angry, the building represents Bermondsey’s industrial past and history.”

Kristina set up an online petition and also collected signatures at Maltby Street Market last week, in total securing some 700 names. She is also urging supporters to discuss the issue on social media using #SaveBermondsey.

She said: “I’m very passionate about this. There is just no coherent plan to make the area beautiful. Obviously development needs to take place but there

must be a way to incorporate and preserve beautiful, historic buildings.

“I come from Gothenburg and there are a lot of similarities with Bermondsey. But we are losing the beauty and I am very angry. I just don’t understand the thinking.”

member for regeneration and new homes, said: “This building was not listed or in a conservation area, and the decision made by the planning committee took into account its existing condition.

“No objections were raised to its loss at the time. The planning committee agreed that the new building is of appropriate use and design. As there was a full and thorough consideration of these issues there is no reason to reverse the decision.”

Historic treasures get listed status SOUTHWARK: The last remnant of an eighteenth century lock-up for Dulwich drunkards is one of the Southwark treasures to gain listed status from Historic England this year.

The stone plaque, which was presumably fixed over the entrance of the ‘village lock-up’ at the junction of Dulwich Village and Court Lane, reads: ‘It is a sport for a fool to do mischief; thine own wickedness shall correct thee’.

The sign was discovered in 1922 during the development of a parade of shops at Dulwich Village and was subsequently erected in a garden in Carlton Avenue. Historic England awarded the plaque Grade II status because it is a “rarity” and “A tangible and evocative reminder of crime and punishment during the Georgian period.”

The Swedish Seaman’s Mission in Rotherhithe, which was nominated for a Southwark Blue Plaque last year, has also been listed because of its distinctive architecture.

Kirkaldy’s Testing Works in Southwark Street is described as being of “international importance” as the first ever purpose-built independent commercial materials testing laboratory and it still houses one of the earliest testing machines to remain in working order.

A nineteenth century house in Borough High Street and the SE1 Church of the Most Precious Blood have also been listed.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has called time on plans to redevelop two of the borough’s most historic pubs, by formally listing the boozers as assets of community value.

The Elephant and Castle Pub and the Thomas A Becket Pub will now have greater protection against redevelopment after they were both listed following a campaign by the Walworth Society.

Group chair Jeremy Leach said he was “delighted” at the news. Anyone wishing to convert the Elephant and Castle to retail or residential use will now need council approval, while the sale of the Thomas A Becket has been frozen for at least six weeks to allow the community to express their interest in buying the storied boozer.

The News reported last week that the Thomas A Beckett was due to be auctioned at a guide price of £1.9m on Monday, June 23.

Jeremy said: “Nearly all of our pubs have been lost at the Elephant and Castle and along the Old Kent Road.

Recognising these pubs as community assets can help make sure that residents and visitors alike will have places to go to enjoy themselves and get a real sense of two places which are at the heart of the story of south London and a huge part of its identity.”

However, despite these recent unsavoury incidents, the two pubs boast central roles in the borough’s history.

There has been a public house on the Elephant and Castle roundabout site, at the junction of Newington Causeway and New Kent Road, since 1765 and it is the origin of the name of the area.

The owner of The Elephant & Castle was contacted but declined to comment.

Campaign calls for Clipper memories

ROTHERHITHE: Community campaigners are calling for residents to share their memories of The Clipper pub, to help prevent it from being turned into a four-storey block of flats.

The Rotherhithe Street watering hole is facing demolition after an application was submitted to Southwark Council to replace it with flats and retail space.

The council’s decision has been postponed until July 1 to allow planning committee members time to visit the pub and see what impact the new building may have on the area.

Mark Parker, of the ‘I Live in SE16’ community website, is appealing for News readers to send in their memories as part of a community asset application, which could help prevent the development.

He said: “We’ve lost so many pubs in recent years, there is a massive change happening. We have new people moving to the area but nothing to offer them other than faceless sets of developments.

“Pubs are places where the community can come together, they aren’t just watering holes. They’re a place to meet, to share lives, but soon we’ll have nothing to offer and people will be forced to look outside of the area for social spaces.”

David Hubber, Lib Dem councillor for Surrey Docks, shared this fear and highlighted the decline of public houses in the area since he was first elected in 2002.

He said: “There used to be twelve pubs here and now there are five, and it looks like the number will drop even further soon, which is a real shame. As well as this, like a lot of local residents I am worried about the height and light issues that come with replacing it with a fourstorey building. The pub is an interesting building of its time, and we all want it to remain a pub.”

£10k reward offer in murder appeal

CAMBERWELL: Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died of a gunshot wound at King’s College Hospital last week.

A reward of £10,000 has been offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for murdering Ogarra Dixon, of Brixton.

The 24-year-old was brought to the hospital during the early hours of June 17 by three men, who then left.

They have since come forward and spoken to police.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: “Detectives have established that he was fatally shot in Marcella Road, Brixton, after arriving there alone in his black Vauxhall Astra.

“Ogarra was seen leaving his car and walking towards a nearby block of flats. At 00:25hrs he was seen stumbling away from his car, before collapsing at the junction with Serenaders Road.”

Police believe there was a large group of people near the block of flats at the time and are appealing for people who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

A spokesperson for Crimestoppers, who are offering the reward, said: “Do the right thing and please tell us what you know. It is vital that whoever is responsible for this crime is brought to justice.”

CAMPAIGNERS FOR a footbridge between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf received a boost last week when Transport for London granted £170,000 for an “advance feasibility” study.

The proposed 400-metre long bridge would span the Thames between the north of the borough and the Isle of Dogs, with an opening section in the middle that would allow ships to pass.

Currently, commuters between Rotherhithe and Canada Water have no option but to spend £1.70 for a one-stop, two-minute journey on the Jubilee Line.

A spokesperson for Sustrans, the pedestrian, cyclist and public transport charity behind the project, said the bridge would provide a “healthier travel option” for thousands of people.

Chief Executive Malcolm Shepherd said: “It could enable millions of sustainable cross-river journeys and make it far easier for people to choose

a healthier travel option. With highquality links to destinations either side, it will make walking and cycling a real choice for hundreds of thousands of residents, workers and visitors.”

London’s population is expected to

reach 10m by 2030, with a third of this growth expected in the east of the capital.

Isabel Dedring, Deputy Mayor for Transport, added: “We urgently need more crossings - for all types of transport users. So we are delighted

to be able to offer this funding to help progress Sustrans' proposed cycling and walking bridge.”

Subject to the results of the feasibility study and subsequent negotiations, the bridge could be delivered by 2020.

Homeless man jailed for masturbating on bus... on 6 separate occasions

A HOMELESS man has been jailed for masturbating on a bus…on six separate occasions.

Fabian Downie, 44, was sentenced to twenty months in prison after he pleaded guilty to six counts of outraging public decency on London buses at Woolwich Crown Court last week.

On January 8, Downie boarded the 453 bus in Elephant and Castle and “performed a sex act” in full view of the other passengers, before getting off.

Between October 2014 and April this year Downie committed the same offence on six different buses across London, but was caught after two passengers took photographs of him and sent them to the police.

The police studied the CCTV footage from all the buses and arrested Downie on May Detective Superintendent Adnan Quresh said: “Downie carried out these appalling crimes in full view of passengers, putting them through an awful ordeal.

THE MAYOR of Southwark and the Pearly Queen of Rotherhithe will take part in a charity abseil this Saturday in aid of Guy’s Hospital’s new cancer centre.

Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle and Michelle Thorpe will perform the hair-raising stunt down the side of King’s College Hospital at 1pm – dressed in full mayoral and pearly regalia.

Cllr Dixon Fyle told the News: “I’m a bit scared but looking forward to it. It’s a good way to lose weight, I can tell you that!

Every time I think ‘should I have this cake’, I just remember the abseil and hope it will hold my weight. I’ve been training at the Salmon Centre and they’ve assured me that it’s all mind over matter.

That’s fair enough, but once you get to the top it’s easy to freeze – you’re 100 feet up!”

Michelle will be doing the stunt dressed in her pearly suit, something she believes has never been done before.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m delighted to be supporting Dora and help out in her year of fundraising for cancer.

It’s close to my heart, I’ve lost family members and everyone knows someone who has been affected.”

THE QUEEN sent her condolences to the Albin-Dyer family on Saturday as hundreds of people lined the streets to mourn the passing of “the best funeral director in the world.”

Barry Albin-Dyer’s sons, Jon and Simon, gave moving eulogies at the service at The Most Holy Trinity Church in Dockhead as they laid their father to rest.

Simon said they had both been “devastated” by the loss of the greatest man” they had ever known and loved.

“He was the greatest and most wonderful dad and we will miss him so much,” he said to the hundreds of mourners inside the church and hundreds more who watched on the large screens outside.

“He was a true gentleman. He was my best friend and he was always there for me and Jon,” he added.

“The world is such a different place without him,” said Jon, who emphasised what a kind and compassionate man Barry was. “If everyone could take something from him, what a better world

it would be,” he added.

The boys proudly read out a letter from the Assistant Private Secretary to the Queen, which expressed Her Majesty’s condolences to the family, saying how sorry she was to hear of their father’s passing.

Margaret Thatcher’s son, Mark, also gave a reading at the beginning of the service.

Mourners came from as far afield as Texas and Cyprus to pack out the church, while hundreds lined the streets of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe to applaud the late, great funeral director, as his cortege marked a route of the milestones of his life.

“Bermondsey and Rotherhithe you have done him so proud today,” said Jon in his heartfelt eulogy.

The incredible floral displays on the funeral cars read “Bermondsey Boy”, “Thank you Dad” and “You’ll never walk alone,” which was the song playing at the end of the service.

Many mourners who turned out were those whom Barry had helped through their own time of grief, like Maurice Stuart, of Bermondsey, who was so grateful for the way his mum’s funeral had been managed three years ago.

John Hosier, 72, who had known Barry for 50 years, said “The man was 110 percent brilliant. He was a very caring man and he tried to help everybody.”

Daisy Edwards is grateful for the memorial garden Barry established.

“Barry did the funeral for my son, and then for my husband who died from a broken heart soon after,” she said. “The memorial garden is marvellous. Me and my friends sit there every now and then, it is so peaceful.”

Lynn Baker summed up the reason so many people came out to pay their respects on the day - “Barry was everyone’s friend,” she said.

The streets have all changed, the faces are new.

LONDON’S AIR Ambulance is a charity that serves ten million people who live, work and travel within the M25 each day.

Camberwell must be the route for proposed tube extension

VAL SHAWCROSS'S piece on the Bakerloo extension (Southwark News column 11th June) was generally helpful but

left out a very important fact.

Not only was there a record level of responses to the TFL consultation on the Bakerloo line (15,346) with overwhelming support for an extension but there was a clear majority in favour of one route over the other. Ms Shawcross points out that only one route will be built so it is very important not to gloss over the question as to which of the two options gathered greatest public support.

The clear majority were in favour of a route via Camberwell (64%) rather than via the Old Kent Road (49%).

There was also a stronger element of opposition to the proposal on the Old Kent Road (21% of those who responded indicated that they opposed or strongly opposed the extension along the Old Kent Road compared to only 9% opposing the tube in Camberwell.)

It is not surprising that this is how the public voted. There is an overwhelming case for bringing the tube to Camberwell. This case must not be ignored nor should we be put off with general promises of public realm improvements. We are in the grip of a transport crisis here.

The area is incredibly busy and crowded. The population density for Camberwell Green is 130 persons per hectare as compared with 99.9 persons per hectare in Southwark and 52 persons per hectare in Greater London. The traffic coming through Camberwell is gridlocked at rush hour in all directions. The buses are very overcrowded and there is no more room on the roads for any further bus traffic. 20,000 cars per day pass through the Camberwell Green crossroads. Between 1,200 and 1,600 pedestrians an hour walk along on the footways on Denmark Hill.

Camberwell is also home to King’s College Hospital, the Maudsley Hospital, the Institute of Psychiatry, the ORTUS learning and events centre and Camberwell College of Arts.

King’s has a million patient visits a

year. It employs nine thousand staff and one thousand junior doctors and medical students. It will also help to link the site at Denmark Hill with the Princess Royal University Hospital.

Staff and clinicians have to travel regularly between these sites and the proposed extension of the Bakerloo line via Camberwell to Hayes would have a huge impact on the efficiency with which they could operate.

Similarly connecting Camberwell with the tube network to the north would greatly assist patients and clinicians who have to travel to St Thomas’s (at Waterloo) and Guy’s (at London Bridge). In addition to the vast number of people needing to access King’s from central and greater London, The Institute of Psychiatry has two thousand staff and students; the Maudsley Hospital has one thousand five hundred staff, contractors and students, sixty five thousand appointments a year and twenty five thousand visitors for their patients. The ORTUS learning and events centre has three thousand to five thousand visits a month, expected to rise to six to seven thousand a month. Camberwell College of Arts has over a thousand students and members of staff.

Pollutants from traffic passing through Camberwell exceeds that allowed under the Air Quality objectives of the London Plan. The Council says 120-130 people a year die prematurely in the borough because of poor air quality.

The need for an extension of the Bakerloo line to Camberwell was already clear in 1939. Tunnelling started in the 40s and a Camberwell station appeared on 1949 tube maps but this was abandoned in postwar austerity. The need for the tube here now is greater than ever and It would make a nonsense of the whole consultation process to ignore the will of the people by taking it to the Old Kent Road instead. The route down the Old Kent Road would attract more private cash from developers who would make huge profits if the line

went that way but is this the way we want decisions to be taken in London?

Two tube extension must be pushed for

LABOUR'S POSITION on the Bakerloo line extension appears to have changed following the recent News column by Val Shawcross (Southwark News 11th June).

For the past two years, Labour has said it supports a two-branch extension, from the Elephant & Castle along the Old Kent Road and another branch to Camberwell.

Council Leader Cllr John also stated he had "a deal" with Boris Johnson to get the extension built. Now Labour are hinting that only one branch is likely.

Labour need to come clean and tell Southwark residents what is really going on. Or they need to clarify the recent comments.

Liberal Democrats continue to support a two-branch extension, not just because of the massive public transport improvements it will bring, but because it will also create new homes and jobs. Residents have given overwhelming support to the twobranch proposal, in petitions organised by the Lib Dems and Labour, and this spring former Bermondsey & Old Southwark MP Simon Hughes secured government backing.

The Bakerloo line extension has been on the drawing board for over 100 years. Having made real progress lately, the cross-party campaign for a two-branch extension is being undermined by these ill-considered comments.

T’S COMMON for people to struggle sometimes with taking medicines, whether they are prescribed or over-the-counter from the chemist.

You might be worried about side effects, don’t think the medicine is working for you, or find it difficult to remember to take them. Your local pharmacist understands this and is there to help.

Taking your medicines correctly will help you to manage your condition better. If you stop or change the way you take your medicine it could make your condition worse. Always let your GP or pharmacist know if you are having problems taking your medication – they may be able to adjust the dose or change it to something else.

Not taking your medication properly not only puts your health at risk, it also costs the NHS a lot of money that could be better spent elsewhere.

Medicines waste costs an estimated £1.6 million every year in Southwark.

By reducing the amount of medicines being wasted the money saved could be used on other desperately needed health services.

Simply ticking all the boxes on your repeat prescription form if you already have enough at home can easily create waste. It also increases the risk to children and others who may accidentally take medication that has been stockpiled at home.

So before heading to the pharmacy, take a look in your medicine cabinet to see what you actually need. Try to only tick the boxes on your repeat prescription for essential items. And if your GP or pharmacist is giving you medicines you are no longer taking or have plenty of at home – let them know.

If you’re on regular medication it can be hard to remember when to take it. If you tell your GP they can help with handy solutions like medicine boxes and reminder charts. Larger, easier to read labels are also available. Find more useful information on everything from free medicines check-ups, medication for people with long-term conditions like asthma and diabetes, and what to do about medicines if you’ve just come out of hospital at www.southwarkccg.nhs.uk Take control of your medicines to make them work for you and if you need advice – it’s okay to ask.

GREEK TRAGEDY is exactly that in this production of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Iphigenia in Tauris. They were a sombre lot the Greeks but I suppose if matricide and patricide are your bag - well you're in for a treat!

Performed in the amazing Rose Theatre, it is inspiring that this production uses all of the space, even the area under renovation. Much of the atmosphere is created by the venue itself and not just the cast.

EVERYONE LOVES a bit of magic, don’t they? Having a coin magicked out from behind your ear was a trick we all grew up to do the little ones.

South London’s Richard Essien was always doing tricks for his family as a young boy, but not always with the same amount of success: ‘I used to show magic mainly to my auntie,’ he tells me.

The ‘timid girl’ who brought women’s cycling to the world stage VICTORIA PENDLETON is a household name these days, but women-on-wheels compete at the same level as their male counterparts now because of the the spirited determination of a Bermondsey-born cyclist, writes Amelia Burr…

Eileen Gray - a “timid and very mousey” girl, who grew up in Dulwich, would go on to found the Women’s Cycle Racing Association and help get women’s bicycle racing recognised as an Olympic sport.

Born on April 25 1920, Eileen lived nearby to the Herne Hill velodrome but cycling didn’t come onto her radar until she started working in a factory during the Second World War. As her mum was ill and in the Maudsley at the time, Eileen wasn’t called up but was instead put to work checking engine parts on the Harrow Road.

When the buses and trains went on strike she was late for work and got a telling off from her boss. “I thought ‘right, you’re not getting me again’,” Eileen recalled in an interview with British Cycling in 2010. She got hold of an old bike and rode it all the way from Dulwich to Harrow Road every day. “….round the rubble and the potholes, through all weathers, night and day, but I was never late again, and he never had another opportunity to tell me off,” she said.

That old bike and that journey to work turned out to be a life-changing experience for young Eileen, who felt her character transformed by the freedom of the open road.

“I was really shy as a young girl timid and very mousey. And I would probably have stayed that way had it not been for this old bike that I was given during the war,” she said. “I can’t remember where it came from but I do know that it was the one thing that changed me from that shy young woman into the confident person that I became.”

In the days when there was no money for leisure activities and everyone made their own fun, Eileen became a keen cyclist and ended up joining the Apollo Cycling Club near where she lived and became an accomplished cyclist. “None of the other clubs allowed women to ride. But the Apollo was great and very welcoming. I made so many friends……I had to be pushed home from my first club run because I was so tired, but I kept going back for more,” she said.

In post-war Europe, sport was used as a way of bringing battling nations back together and cycle racing was hugely popular. In 1946, a track cycle event was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, where unusually the event organisers

decided to run a women’s race as a ‘sideshow’. Three women from the UK were invited to compete, including Eileen, in what was the first ever British women’s international team.

“It was a great opportunity for us,” said Eileen. “People today would laugh at even the suggestion that permission had to be given by half of society to the other half to do something that they did as part of everyday life, but that’s the way it was back then.

"Men ruled women and women had to wait to be invited, never mind they’d kept the whole country and the war effort going on their own for six years, as well as looking after their kids and doing women stuff - and all for only two thirds of the pay. But this was our chance – an invitation to show what we could do!”

It turned out that the Danish team were members of a theatrical troupe who rode bikes as part of their act – which tells you how seriously the establishment

took women’s sport at that time.

Eileen’s team romped home to an impressive victory but, unlike the men’s event, there were no medals or titles awarded. “Oh no, they just wanted us there as a side show but what they didn’t realise was that they’d given us a platform, visibility, and a chance to show what we could do. And other women saw us too and must have thought ‘if they can do it, so can I’ and from that point on, something started that they couldn’t stop,” said Eileen.

The following year Eileen gave birth to her son but stayed heavily involved in cycling administration and founded the Women’s Track Racing Association (WTRA) in 1949, which became the Women’s Cycle Racing Association in 1956.

Eileen achieved a breakthrough in 1955 when the Union Cycliste Internationale, the sport’s international governing body, agreed to recognise women’s world records.

Soon after it was at Herne Hill velodrome where Daisy Franks set the first ever world record for women by establishing a 550-metre flying start.

These achievements brought an invitation from France for a British team to enter a three-day stage race at Roanne. As team manager, Eileen led her riders to victory - “…which I don’t think had been in the French plan,” she recalled wryly. The publicity around their win led to the same promoter putting on another event which he called “Le Tour de France Feminine” – which the British won too.

In 1958 the first World Championships cycling event specifically for women was staged in France, but the progress Eileen was making was resented by some of their male counterparts. Instead of cheering them on patriotically, one had women banned from a track and another had stole their equipment while they were at an international competition. “He just did it to harm our

chances. And it makes my blood boil to this day to hear him lauded for his contribution to UK cycling when he did that to us,” said Eileen.

From 1976 to 1986 Eileen Gray served as president of the British Cycling Federation (now British Cycling) and was invovled in cycle racing gaining Olympic status in 1984.She served as vice-chairman of the British Olympic Committee and was instrumental in the foundation of the London Youth Games in 1977. She was the mayor of Kingston upon Thames in the 90s and for more than 50 years she was a member of the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Masons, one of two orders of women Freemasons in Britain, of which she became the Past Most Worshipful the Grand Master. She was given an MBE in 1978 and a CBE in 1997. Eileen Gray was predeceased by her husband Wally Gray and was survived by her son when she passed away on May 20 at the grand old age of 95.

WITH JUST a couple of warm days under our belts the hail and wind is soon forgotten as our thoughts turn to summer. With that we think of al fresco dining and drinking cool cocktails while enjoying a view and a nibble or two. Pennethorne’s has all that and more, writes Michael Holland...

Pennethorne’s is set in the magnificent new wing of Somerset House, and named after its architect James Pennethorne. New because this section is early 19th century while work on the main buildings started in the 18th. More recently Somerset House has seen the Government move their offices out and the restoration teams move in.

Nowadays it is home to galleries, bars, restaurants and the central courtyard used for an eclectic array of events.

Pennethorne’s spreads itself over several rooms on both sides of a corridor, with all rooms affording different views, and entering any of the elegant rooms immediately takes you back to days when decadent masquerade balls were held here rather than when the Inland Revenue stamped and filed forms. The modern décor is stylish and works with the graceful design rather than against it, and the Electro House playing softly in the background did not detract from the ambience of Pennethorne’s but added a hardly noticeable, but agreeable backdrop of sound.

On the hottest day of the year so far we were looking for something summery, so Mum went for a Chilled Venetian; a superb concoction of Martini Bianco, Orange Bitters, Prosecco and Tonic.

‘Hmmmm,’ she said. I, though, set my sights on The One Vodkatini, which was vodka, Martini Rosso, Lemon and Orange Zest. That baby had zing!

It’s never advisable to drink on empty stomachs so we checked out the bar menu which was full of tasty titbits.

First off Mum was straight in for a bowl of Cashew Nuts, while I had my eye on a rather delicious looking hunk of Black Hoof Jamón Ibérico sitting proudly on the bar, though after talking to our waiter James-Lee I opted for the Cornish Coppa, made from Cornish Pork shoulder, dry cured in a blend of salts and spices, coated in pepper spice, and slowly air dried to develop its strong, punchy flavour. It was extremely flavoursome. We also had two types of bread: Fig & Apricot and Walnut & Raisin - the fruit and nut one taking my fancy the most; Sardines, and a Picos Blue Cheese, made in

It was as we were enjoying our bar bites that Mum revealed her latest addiction to cashew nuts. Yikes! I pulled the bowl away and out of her reach, and endeavoured to finish them off myself, thereby putting her out of harm’s way, while also not declaring my own passion for said nuts! Well, you are what you eat, they say…

All those yummy snacks only made us thirsty so another dip into the cocktail menu was called for.

This time I had an Old-Fashioned Cherry (Bourbon, Maraschino, Pomegranate Molasses and Bitters), which could be quite dangerous if you were having more than the one.

It gave me a warm glow both inside and out, as well as an inscrutable smile of satisfaction. James-Lee came over for a chat about cocktails and gin, and before long Mum had been lured into a classic Negroni made with Sloe Gin, one of her

Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Bournemouth Road, between Rye Lane and Copeland Road. Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will take place for: (a) 13th – 17th July (b) 15th July – 2nd September. (c) 6th July – 28th August. (d) 13th July – 31st August.

4,000 kids enjoy the Kia Oval Schools Day

NEARLY 4,000 children enjoyed a fantastic free day of first-class cricket at the Kia Oval – as over 150 schools signed for the Lycamobile Surrey CCC Schools Day.

School children of all ages from across south London and Surrey flocked into the ground to watch players including the great Kevin Pietersen and big hitting Australian James Faulkner play in day three of Surrey’s LV= County Championship match against Lancashire.

As well as the cricketing action, kids got the chance to try out the game for themselves, enjoying fun sessions with Surrey CCC coaches and getting the opportunity to bowl at a host of International cricketers such as New Zealand women’s international Rachel Candy and England Learning Disability pair Jonny Gale and Tayler Young.

The Kia Oval also called its local Lambeth friends Vauxhall City Farm, who took animals including alpacas, goats, lambs, chickens, ducks and guinea pigs the short trip

down the road to further entrance the youngsters.

One of the most popular activities of the day was to secure the autographs of cricketers! The autograph station helped in this quest, although children took far more delight from chasing the Surrey and Lancashire players around the stadium.

When play in the first session was curtailed ten minutes early, Pietersen proved himself a great sport by staying out for a full fifteen minutes – dealing with a large and eager crowd who took the opportunity to grab a signature or a selfie with KP! Other popular targets for autographs included Surrey fast bowler Stuart Meaker, who battled manfully to keep a large crowd satisfied, whilst also fielding on the deep extra cover boundary, and allrounder Azhar Mahmood, who wasn’t playing in the game but went onto the field to train at lunchtime and ended up in an impromptu half hour signing session!

The event was the fifth consecutive Schools Day at the Kia Oval – with the largest number of schools ever coming down to the day. It was the first year of involvement from Surrey’s official mobile phone partner Lycamobile, who provided free four and six cards for the children to enthusiastically wave and also sent their popular mascot, Globe Man, down for further off field entertainment!

Schools Day was also supported by County Championship sponsors LV=, who staged a ‘Batting for Charity’ event which gave children the chance to bowl at Candy, Gale and Young. For each child who participated they donated £1 to Surrey CCC’s charity partner Evelina London Children’s Hospital – with the event culminating in a superb £1,000 donation.

SURREY OPENER Arun Harinath bagged two centuries in one game but it was not enough to prevent the Kennington side losing their first County Championship game of the season.

The 28-year-old scored 120 first time out against Glamorgan at Guildford and 104 when Surrey were asked to bat again, but he still ended on the losing side.

This was largely down to Graham Wagg from the Welsh side who scored a double century and picked up six wickets in an impressive all round display.

With the exception of Gary Wilson nobody gave Harinath support in Surrey’s second innings which led to a total of 277, and Glamorgan eased to a seven wicket win on the final day of the game.

Wilson also top scored in Surrey’s T20 outing against Kent last Friday but again the Kia Oval outfit failed to do enough for a win in the shortest form of the game.

Playing at home Surrey’s attack limited Kent to a total of 231, with Darren Stevens top scoring with an impressive 90 off 39 balls, but the total proved too much for the Kennington team to chase down.

Tom Curran opened the batting and scored a respectable 41 off 22 balls but only him, Wilson and Zafar Ansari got scores of note as the home side fell short of victory by 54 runs.

The result leaves Surrey rooted to the bottom of the south group in the competition with only one win from seven outings.

Surrey have signed South African opener Dean Elgar on a ten-day contract in order to fill holes in the squad after international commitments and injury.

Elgar made his debut in the County Championship contest against Derbyshire that got underway on Sunday.

Surrey won that contest within three days, by a margin of 222 runs, with Gareth Batty, who picked up four wickets for 32 runs, helping to skittle out the home side second time around for just 125 runs.

Rain means Dulwich CC share points with Ashford

DULWICH CRICKET Club managed to share the spoils with Ashford on Saturday in a rain affected encounter at their home ground.

The home side opted to field at the weekend and Ashford used up their full allocation of overs to accumulate 228/9.

Frankie Brown and Salaar Waqar were able to exert some control during the Ashford innings, conceding just 35 off their first fifteen overs in tandem.

Brown finishing with 6/42 off seventeen overs, his second haul of five or more wickets this season.

Dulwich were left with 45 overs to get the runs required and they got off to a bad start when skipper Michael Currey fell in

the third over.

A heavy shower then drove the players from the field, resulting in the loss of three overs.

Only nine balls were possible after the resumption before a much heavier downpour brought a longer interruption.

Play finally resumed with another twelve overs deducted, reducing the innings to 30 overs. This left just 6.3 overs to score 44 runs and reach the new winning draw target of 125.

Brown fell in the next over for 38, but Stuart Ferguson and keeper Ed Hopkins were up to the challenge adding 40 for the fifth wicket and reaching the target with an over to spare.

Both sides took five points from the encounter which meant Dulwich remain in seventh place in Ryman Surrey Championship Division Two.

NHS HEALTH CHECKS A SUCCESS AT MILLWALL

MILLWALL FC teamed up with Southwark Council last Friday for National Men's Health Week 2015 (15th – 21st June) and were offering complimentary home match tickets to all those who attended a special free NHS Health Check.

Southwark Council were targeting men who were • Aged between 40 and 75 years • Have not been diagnosed with heart disease or related conditions eg high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke or diabetes • Live in Southwark or are registered with a Southwark GP • Have not had an NHS Health Check in the last 5 years.

Men who did not meet this criteria were offered a shorter 'MOT', including a blood pressure reading, body mass index measurement and advice on leading a healthier lifestyle.

Dave Cusack, who played for Millwall between 1983-1985 was Millwall’s special guest and it wasn’t long before he brushed off his boots and took part in a walking football session which is run by Millwall for All and takes place every Friday at the Lions Centre from 11:30am-12:30pm.

Fred wants to build on last season’s promise

LOOK UP Fred Onyedinma’s goals last season on YouTube and you’ll be left wondering what exactly is his best position.

Against Hartlepool he receives a pass on the right before accelerating into the area and snapping a shot past Scott Flinders for the winner.

The following Saturday he shows perfect goal-scoring instincts to move unnoticed into a position on the back post and nod in Sam Wood’s volleyed shot.

On a snow-covered pitch at Gigg Lane

a week later he is alert and nimble enough to capitalise on a mix-up between the Bury centre-backs to finish emphatically with a left-footed shot past Nick Pope.

He then shows his awareness by anticipating the worst-case scenario for a goalkeeper when he follows up Wood’s parried shot against Newport County.

But arguably the pick of the bunch, and the one that would most excite Millwall fans, is his effort in the 3-2 win at Carlisle.

This time he has taken up a position wide on the left about to take on full-back Matt Young and David Amoo, who is retreating to help out his teammate.

After a quick stepover and feint inside,

he swiftly changes direction towards the end line before cutting inside again leaving Young on his backside and Amoo out of the game to curl a strike into the far corner that gives Raphael Spiegel no chance.

As the variety of goals he scored to help Wycombe to the League Two play-off final last season illustrates, Onyedinma is at his best when he has no restrictions on the pitch.

“I’ve adapted to playing in different positions,” he explains. “When I was with Wycombe I played up top and on both wings. I think I’ve come to adapt my game and can be a threat in every position.

“I think my favourite position would be behind the striker. Sometimes I might have to stay on the wing or up top but, really, I try to look for ways that I can get on the ball.

“I don’t really like being fixed in one position. I prefer to move around and try to create something.”

His eight league goals for the Chairboys last term came in two prolific bursts.

There were three in three successive weeks that were worth five points to his side in January before he scored his next batch of five goals in four successive games in February and March.

It all indicates a player who very much

thrives on confidence but still needs to work through those patches when the ball is not quite falling in the same way for him.

“When I was scoring it gave me a lot of confidence,” he says. “I’d go into the next match thinking, ‘I’m going to score, I’m going to score.’

“It also gave me a lot of confidence during the game.”

At 18, he has time on his side and he already speaks with a maturity and focus that is reflected on the pitch and will be reflected too on the training ground in the coming weeks. He lost his place in the Wycombe side at the end of March but showed his resilience and character by starting the next game and providing an assist.

His manager at Wycombe certainly didn’t worry about turning his head when he heaped on the praise in January, saying his attacker “doesn’t know how good he is”.

“It’s nice to get compliments,” Onyedinma admits. “But I just try to keep playing really. I appreciate what he said but I just want to keep playing and keep improving. Even though I get compliments from people I don’t let it get to my head.

“Or, likewise, if I’m not playing well I still try to work hard and keep playing and improving and make the best out of my career really.”

Wycombe’s extended season meant a shorter rest period over the summer but, after a quick family break in Spain, he’s ready to join his teammates today before jetting off again to the Iberian peninsula for a very different kind of trip.

“It’s come quite quick from the playoffs, which finished on May 23, but I’ve had a rest now so I’m really looking forward to it.

“Last season was quite tough when we went to the training camp in Portugal. We were doing two sessions a day which was quite difficult. And when we came back we did more ball work and three sessions a day, which was beneficial because it prepared us for the season.

“The training is something you gradually get used to.

“I enjoy the tactical side of preparations as well because it helps me and my game.

There are some things I might not be good at so I always want to learn.

“With Neil Harris and Dave Livermore you can speak to them to try and understand things better and they’d never not help you.

“I don’t think anyone necessarily likes the running part of it but it’s something that you have to do and get on with. It’s just about being focused during preseason because that’s the most important part in getting your season going immediately and doing well.”

Stats show smaller squads work best

JOE MARTIN and Jordan Archer will join up with the rest of the Millwall squad this morning for the first day of pre-season preparations.

The signings are consistent with the message coming from the club in terms of how manager Neil Harris wants to restructure the squad, with an emphasis on building a team with a British core with young, fit, hungry players.

He is also determined to address specific areas that need strengthening after the more haphazard approach of last season left the club with an unbalanced and bloated squad that needed trimming after the conclusion of the Championship.

Millwall signed ten players on permanent deals last summer, but only four remain on their books.

LIONESSES KEEPING HARRIS UP LATE

FOR SOMEONE who arrives at work at 7am every morning, Neil Harris has been up into the wee hours recently.

The Millwall boss has watched England reach the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup and he will have another late one watching them against Canada at 12.30am next Sunday morning.

“My daughter is eight and is involved with Millwall Lionesses,” he told the club’s website. “And the success of the England team and the coverage they are getting on the BBC can only help promote the women’s game which is going from strength to strength at the grassroots level.”

BOOST AS TRIO MAKE RETURNS

CARLOS EDWARDS has finally returned to full training.

The 36-year-old missed almost all of last season after the serious knee injury he suffered against Nottingham Forest in September.

The news is a major boost for boss Harris, who has spoken of the leadership qualities the defender brings to the dressing room.

Club physio Bobby Bacic has also confirmed that midfielder Shaun Williams and forward Jamie Philpot are to start some light outdoor work this week.

It means the Lions currently have no long-term injury concerns as preseason preparations get under way.

It’s a strategy that is backed up by the list compiled by the Football League after the end of last season detailing the number of players used by clubs across the three divisions.

There was a clear correlation between those numbers and the clubs’ final league positions.

Generally stated, the fewer players used, the more likely the chance of finishing higher in the league.

Millwall used 40 players last season the fifth most in the Championship.

Wigan picked 41 while the other relegated side, Blackpool, who had only eight players in their squad just two weeks before the start of the season, ended up using 50 players, which only added to the sense of turmoil surrounding the club.

Meanwhile Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich, who were promoted to the Premier League, used an average of 29 players.

The patterns were similar in League One and League Two. In League One the final positions of Bristol City, MK Dons and Preston perfectly correlated with the number of players each club used during the league campaign.

Notts County used 44 players as they finished bottom of the table, while in League Two Tranmere and Cheltenham used the highest number of players and ended up occupying the bottom two rungs of the Football League ladder.

Those statistics underscore the importance of a r i g o r o u s recruitment process and Millwall employ a number of performance analysts to assess potential signings.

Those signings are unlikely to come from overseas, though, as Harris wants to be able to personally run the rule over targets.

MATTHEW BRIGGS became the first of the players released

by Millwall at the end of last season to find a new club when he signed for Colchester United this week.

The 24-year-old defender was one of 10 Millwall signings last season, five of whom were not retained for next season.

Briggs was the Premier League’s youngest ever player when he made his debut for Fulham aged just 16 years and 65 days but he has never quite lived up to that promise.

He will face his former club for the first time when Colchester travel to The Den on November 21.

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Andy Ambler was this week reelected to the Football League board.

He is one of two representatives from League One having previously represented the Championship on the board.

“PLAYERS KNOW WHAT I EXPECT”

Boss to assess squad as pre-season prep begins

NEIL HARRIS says his players know exactly what he expects of them as they begin pre-season preparations today - but warned patience will be required with such a young side.

The squad will spend the next ten days at their training complex on Calmont Road, before departing for Portugal on Sunday week for five days of warmweather conditioning.

They arrive back on July 10 and play their first pre-season friendly at Bromley four days later.

The Lions squad were given off-season programmes to follow and Harris confirmed the first two days at Calmont Road would be spent mostly assessing the players’ fitness levels.

And he said they would incorporate ball work in training sessions as early as possible, before focusing on strategy and team shape.

“Tactically, things will really start when we go to Portugal,” he explained. “That’s when we’ll really start to fine tune things.

“The players that were here last season know what my expectations are for every game. When I address the players this week I’ll be telling them what I expect of them on and off the pitch.

“We’ll build a team spirit and camaraderie that we’ll carry onto the pitch. We’ll be competitive in every game.

We’re out there representing the football club and aiming to win every game.

“As for the league position, we want to be competitive, we want to be a top team.

But we’ll have a young side, so we’ll have to be patient at times.”

Meanwhile Harris is looking at the positives after Millwall were last week handed some awkward Tuesday night fixtures by the Football League.

“It’s part and parcel of football,” he said.

“It’s more disappointing for the fans really, but for the players as well. You want support and on Tuesday nights it makes it more difficult. Wigan, Blackpool and Fleetwood are days out that the fans could enjoy so the fact that they’re on a Tuesday is a bit of a shame.

“That’s something we’ve had to get used to over the years but it still doesn’t make it any less disappointing.

“I think there’s a bit of frustrati o n there for everybody, but then again we’ve come out on the right side of things at Christmas. I think that’s a bit of a bonus for us, being at home on Boxing Day.”

MILLWALL DEFENSIVE RESTRUCTURING NOT COMPLETE YET

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris isn’t finished adding to Millwall’s defensive options after signing Jordan Archer and Joe Martin this week.

He is targeting a left-sided centreback and would ideally like to complete a deal before the squad leave for Portugal in 10 days.

Brentford’s 30-year-old former Lion Tony Craig is believed to be an option.

The signing of a defender with Craig’s age profile would fit with Harris’ plans to add some more experience to a youthful squad.

He told the club’s website: “Young players tend to be a bit hit and miss in the early stages - I certainly was.”

“However, we have some very talented lads here who will be key to the successful future of this club, so we have to give them time and surround them with some more senior players of good character.

“It’s my choice to go this way.

The make-up of the group will be very different this time round, with so many players leaving at the end of last season.”

Meanwhile the search for a centre-forward also continues.

Harris added: “It is no secret that I want to bring in another striker so that we have four or five with different attributes competing for places.
