Good news for Harvey - but let’s make sure we keep up support

W

hen the News first met Harvey Brown in May this year, his mum Vikki admitted his chances of getting a new drug to treat his rare condition were ‘pretty grim’.

We revealed how Vikki and husband Dean were battling the NHS to get their six-year-old son the drug Vimizim, life-changing treatment for sufferers of Harvey’s condition, Morquio.

The devastating condition means Harvey’s skeleton will not develop properly. His organs will continue to grow, but his weak bones won’t and he is likely to develop heart disease and breathing difficulties, while losing his vision and hearing. Although not a cure, Vimizim may be able to help Harvey, and the 77 other children suffering Morquio in the UK, to develop stronger bodies, walk more easily, keep their vision and live longer.

The drug was licensed by the European Medicines Agency in April last year, but families in the UK have been fighting since then to get it offered on the NHS. Since we first reported Harvey’s story, thousands of people have joined an online campaign calling for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), to give the drug the go-ahead. Harvey’s schoolmates have petitioned Downing Street, and Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle has taken the battle to parliament.

This week, as Millwall-mad Harvey was in hospital having surgery to straighten the bones in his legs, his parents heard that NICE was going to recommend Vimizim be offered on the NHS. A relieved Vikki has described the news as ‘Christmas come early’.

NICE’s decision can only be seen as a correct one. Even if the drug is expensive, no price can be put on helping a sick child feel better, keep their vision and hearing, and live longer. The decision will now have to go out to consultation before it is put into policy in December. Harvey will hopefully be taking the medicine in the New Year. We hope there are no obstacles in its way, so Harvey can start taking Vimizim soon.

The people of Bermondsey and Southwark, and the wider Millwall community, have taken on Harvey’s battle as their own. Even if he starts taking Vimizim, Harvey will still face a daily battle to do what most six-year-old stake for granted. Let’s make sure we continue to back our little Lions fan all the way.

A

No strike at all costs

STRIKE by junior doctors in our NHS is a national disaster – and should be prevented at all costs.

We might have the chairman of the General Medical Council Niall Dickson, threatening an investigation should the doctors’ action cause patients serious harm. Of course it will cause harm, but we don’t want to stand aside and watch such a disaster happen, only to investigate afterwards.

This is the worst news for patients in the history of our NHS and must be stopped before it is allowed to start. By preventing the strike the government will lose a significant battle in their so called reforms, but will win by showing lives are more important; and can start real negotiations - beginning with how we got to this stage where 98 per cent of junior doctors felt so demotivated that they came out in such large numbers to agree to the unthinkable.

WATCH OUT MARY BERRY Biscuit Big Ben lands Purdey, 12, in top ten bakers

A LITTLE girl from Herne Hill worked around the clock to create a show-stopping Big Ben out of biscuits, securing her a place in Britain’s top ten junior bakers.

Purdey Burton, twelve, has been baking since she was five, but nothing had prepared her for competing in the Junior Bake Off – a version of the Great British Bake Off for children on CBBC. In her first round, the Mary Berry fan rose to the challenge as she made a hundred mini-meringues with three different flavours in an hour, before embarking on her timely masterpiece.

When asked to recreate an iconic building out of biscuits, Purdey struck

on the idea of building Big Ben because her father works in the House of Lords.

She flavoured her shortbread with oranges and lemons (with a nod to the ‘bells of St Clements’) and then sandwiched the layers together with buttercream and optimism.

“I stacked them all the same size and just hoped for the best that it wouldn’t fall over,” said Purdey who spent the whole of her summer holidays practicing. “When I finished it I was really proud of it.”

After a tense round of judging, Purdey creamed the competition to go through to the quarter finals with ten other children whittled down from thousands of applicants.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Purdey, who regularly shares her bakes with her

neighbours. “I was completely shocked, I couldn’t even talk. I walked off and told my mum and just started crying. I rang my dad on the way back he was screaming, I was absolutely gobsmacked,” she said.

In the next round disaster struck in the tent as Purdey attempted to make chocolate orange tarts decorated with cherry spiders. “I was really pushed for time and I dropped one of the tarts and had to bake it again. It fell over and went splat and I was thinking ‘oh my gosh how am I going to do this?’. Two of them were underdone so I was a bit annoyed with myself,” said Purdey, who admitted to being a bit relieved to be leaving the pressure of the Bake Off tent when she was not selected to go through to the semi-finals.

“When they didn’t call my name out I was kind of half relieved but disappointed,” said Purdey. “I’m just thrilled I did it. I’ll never forget the experience. Everyone was so lovely and I’m never going to forget being one of one of the top ten bakers in the country,” she said proudly.

“Me and Dean have been saying it’s the only thing we want for Christmas is for them to say ‘yes’,” said Vikki, 46, who got the call when Harvey was in surgery earlier this week, having plates fitted to his knees to help his legs grow straight.

“I was in shock,” said Vikki, of Galleywall Road. “It still hasn’t sunk in. It’s just brilliant news. It’s like Christmas has come early.”

Morquio is an inherited illness caused by an enzyme deficiency, which means Harvey’s skeleton will not develop properly. His organs will continue to grow but his weak bones won’t and he is likely to develop heart disease and breathing difficulties, while losing his vision and hearing.

There is no cure for Morquio, and, untreated, patients rarely live beyond their twenties.

Vimizim will help children like Harvey and the 77 other children in the UK with Morquio, to grow and develop stronger bodies, walk more easily, hang on to their vision and ultimately live longer.

We must now fight to clarify who will get help, how agreements for treatment will be reached and to expand access to this vital help for families like Harvey's across the country," he said.

When the News first covered Harvey’s plight, Vikki admitted the prospects of getting the drug seemed “a bit grim” as the NHS didn’t even have a policy for considering treatments for rare conditions.

Since then, the fundraisers, petitions, and trips to parliament have been “like a rollercoaster,”

according to Vikki, who was waiting to take her “brave boy” home from hospital as the News went to press.

The decision to recommend Vimizim will now be consulted on before it is enshrined in policy in December, with Harvey hopefully able to start taking his new medicine in the New Year.

AN INQUEST has revealed how a chef was killed in a collision with a lorry as he cycled around the Elephant and Castle roundabout last year.

Abdelkhalak Lahyani, of Portland Street, Walworth, was cycling to work at around 4pm on May 13 when he was struck by an HGV turning left onto Newington Butts.

The inquest, led by Assistant Coroner Briony Ballard, concluded that the 47year-old was in a cycle lane between two rows of traffic when he was struck and pulled under the nearside wheels of the lorry.

The driver, named as Edwin Humphries, was visibly shaken as he gave his testimony at Southwark Coroner’s Court on Thursday morning last week. When asked by Ms Ballard if he remembered accurately the events of that day, he replied: “It lives with me every day.” The inquest heard how Mr Humphries, of Telford, was not familiar with the junction and believed he was in

the correct lane for turning left as he stopped and indicated to do so.

The road markings in fact advised the traffic in that lane to proceed straight on over the roundabout, which is the route Mr Lahyani is suspected of trying to take in the neighbouring cycle lane.

It was concluded that it was likely as they both set off, Mr Humphries turned left as Mr Lahyani was trying to go straight on and was killed instantly.

Paramedics and the police tried to rescusitate Mr Lahyani but when the air ambulance arrived the doctor pronounced him dead at the scene.

Ms Ballard gave the cause of death as “multiple traumatic injuries and road traffic incident” before giving her “warmest condolences” to both Mr Lahyani’s widow, Fatimah Manah, 44, who sat through the painful hearing, and Mr Humphries.

PC Andrew Smith who investigated the incident, told the News he had never seen a road layout like the one at the Elephant and Castle roundabout where cycle paths are located between lanes of traffic. “It’s a very complex junction,” he told Miss Ballard in his testimony.

After Mr Lahyani’s death, Southwark’s council leader, Peter John backed the family’s calls for a rush hour ban on HGVs in central London and this week he has confirmed to the News that he was still pushing for this to happen.

“I hope the inquest has given Mr Lahyani’s family some sort of closure and my thoughts remain with them,” said Cllr John. “Although a lot of work has been done, or is being done, to try to make our roads safer for cyclists, I still maintain that we must look at introducing some sort of ban on HGVs, particularly during the rush hour, to protect commuters and I will continue have conversations with TfL and the GLA to see how this can be taken forward.”

A Transport for London spokesperson said: “We are spending almost £1bn to create segregated and safer cycle lanes to protect cyclists from other vehicles, including around the Elephant & Castle area. The Safer Lorry Scheme, which came into operation in September, mandates sideguards and blindspot mirrors, helping to make London a safer and more cycle-friendly city.”

Coffins to be laid outside TfL HQ

TO MARK Mr Lahyani’s death along with twenty other cyclists who were killed on London roads since November 2013, 21 coffins are going to be laid outside Transport for London’s headquarters tomorrow.

The third annual Stop Killing Cyclists ‘die in’ will demand all the London mayoral candidates call of ten percent of TfL’s budget be invested in cycling infrastructure.

Stop Killing Cyclists co-founder Donnachadh McCarthy said: “The current 1.4 percent of the budget being spent on cycling safety is an insult to those dying form collisions, pollution and inactivity diseases and the tens of thousands of Londoners living every day with terrible health impacts.”

WORLD FAMOUS AT JUST ONE MONTH OLD

THE MUM and dad of onemonth-old Bermondsey Millwall Den Bloomfield have described reaction to the naming of their boy as ‘mental’ after the news made headlines around the world.

Last week, the News revealed that Croydon resident Mike Bloomfield had named his baby boy after his hometown, the Lions and their stadium – without telling his wife.

Since then, his story has spread across the world, with media outlets as far away as America and Australia covering the story and clamouring for a comment from the 58-year-old Millwall fan and his wife.

The BBC and TalkSport invited Mike in for interviews, tabloids across Britain covered the story, and Fox Sports in the US discussed it in a quirky television segment.

Jeff Stelling, of the Gillett Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports, even gave little Bermondsey a shout-out while reporting on the Millwall match, while a number of Danish newspapers also got involved, covering the “stor Millwall-fan” (“big Millwall fan”) and his son.

At one point, the name ‘Bermondsey Millwall Den’ even began trending on Twitter – a

Peckham dad battling to meet demand at Calais refugee camp kitchen

A PECKHAM man is determined to feed thousands of people every day as a hunger crisis grips the refugee camp in Calais.

Leon Aarts, of Lyndhurst Way, first visited 'the jungle' in September when the Ashram Kitchen had just been set up and was serving a few hundred meals a day.

Now it serves over a thousand from four gas rings in the back of a tent, but with ten thousand people estimated to be living in the freezing camp now, Leon has decided to take a stand.

A former chef by trade, Leon is overseeing the build of a new, bigger kitchen on the camp, which could feed thousands every day through a network of mobile food vans.

Splitting his time half and half between his home in Peckham and the increasingly desperate camp, the fatherof-two has been moved to tears by the harrowing stories of some of the refugees fleeing war-torn countries.

One night after finishing up the evening meal at the kitchen, a teenage boy who had just arrived in the camp with nothing came in search of a tent and a sleeping bag.

“We gave him something to eat,” said Leon, who has a son of the same age.

“He said he was on his own, so I asked him if he had travelled by himself. He said his parents had died three months earlier in Iraq trying to get out. He’d been travelling across Europe alone for three months. Afterwards I just sat there crying thinking about my own son,” he said.

The One Spirit Ashram Kitchen was originally set up by two guys from Bath who did a van run to Calais together in the summer, taking food and clothing to the camp.

It’s currently being overseen by a motley crew of volunteers, including camp residents, with a former City banker at the helm.

With no government agencies or global charities working in the camp, the hundreds of refugees who arrive every week, sometimes without even shoes on their feet, are reliant upon kitchens like

the Ashram to keep their families alive.

Twice a day a queue of hundreds snakes around the tent as the patient masses wait in the driving rain for a hot meal.

“I don’t want to change anyone’s political views but they are all human beings like you and me,” said Leon, “and we can’t allow human beings to live like this.

“You don’t do a journey like that just to have a better life. These are the most beautiful people - accountants, lawyers, plumbers, chefs, families, children, grandchildren - just simply looking for

somewhere they can live safely and peacefully,” he said.

The kitchen survives solely on donations so Leon is appealing for people in Southwark to support the expansion of the Ashram kitchen so Leon and his fellow volunteers can feed thousands of people every day all across the camp.

Donations are needed to fit out a new kitchen, buy food vans to take hot meals all over the camp, and buy ingredients.

“It just costs 20p to feed one person so for a pound, you could feed five,” said Leon, who welcomes contributions great and small.

Should crane cash be spent on homes?

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has failed to back plans to preserve the Odessa Street docking crane, which the News revealed last week may be saved after a petition was signed by hundreds of people.

The council believes that money put towards retaining the crane, which dates back to the 1930s, should instead be used by developers Hollybrook to build more affordable homes.

Hollybrook are planning houses, a café and a “pocket park” on the Rotherhithe site, with three options for the crane’s future: preserve it,

convert it into a statue, or remove it.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “We do understand there are different views on the future of the crane and we want to hear what local people think.

“The cost of retaining even a portion of the crane is substantial and residents may feel that the money is better spent on alternative local projects, we look forward to hearing their views.”

Residents are split on the proposals, with some, like Andie Byrnes, outright opposing the sculpture plan.

She said that the striking statue would not be “pertinent to the crane and what it represents.”

She said: “It’s just a rotten pun!

Obviously to preserve the whole thing is unrealistic, but if they could preserve some of it, maybe just the cabin and one or two of the arms, that would be a good way to represent the piece of wharfing and timbering heritage.”

However some residents, such as Ian Cooper, whose home overlooks the crane, were in favour of the unusual bird proposal.

He said: “It’s quirky, people would remember it and it could become a bit of a talking point for years to come.”

Consultation of residents for the whole development will take place in early-2016, with an update on plans for the crane expected for residents shortly after Christmas.

he mother of 18-year-old Ben Purdy, who was fatally shot last year following a bitter love-triangle dispute, has said she will never get over the death of her son.

Joanne Purdy said she was still coming to terms with losing her “mummy’s boy”, who was shot in the eye by Andrew Bayne, 37, on the orders of his jilted nephew Michael Bagnall, 22, last November.

She said: “It still sometimes doesn’t feel real. I see someone walking down the street and think it’s him. I know it’s not but you still want to check.”

She said that the life sentences handed out to both killers, however, was justice.

She said: “We did it. It’s what they deserved. Now we can start to try to move on together. After all the time spent in court I just want to spend some time with my other boys.”

She said that the former Globe Academy pupil, whose first anniversary passed this week, was a caring son and protective brother, who always thought of his family ahead of himself.

Joanne said: “He used to save up and buy things for us. He loved buying takeaways so that I didn’t have to cook, and bought football kits and Millwall tickets for his little brothers.”

Ben’s brothers Cole, 5, and Ryan, 8, also both found it hard to cope with their older brother’s death.

She said: “Ryan collapsed when we told him but Cole didn’t understand. Sometimes he still thinks Ben is going to come home.

If they were down, Ben would speak to them and they would be fine after. The boys loved him. Ryan has even started doing his hair like him.”

The trainee plumber and promising footballer was equally popular outside of his family, with a huge group of friends – and admirers.

Joanne said: “Sometimes he used to come home with marks on his neck. He would say they were bruises from paintball but I knew they were love-bites!”

“He died when he was becoming a man, I could already feeling myself losing him a bit even though he was still affectionate. But now I’ll never get to see him grow up.”

His close friend Perry Harrington, who got a tattoo of Ben’s face on his chest earlier this year, described him as someone who would “always keep

people happy.”

He said: “We got off on the wrong foot because we went to different schools but we became close. He was

After shooting Ben, Bayne put his gun in Callum’s mouth but decided not to shoot and fled the scene.

Callum said: “I don’t like talking about it. None of us who were there that day thought it would ever end like that. I have trouble sleeping and get nightmares. I had a bad one last night.

“The sentence was decent. People might say it’s not fair for them to

be old men in jail, but Ben can never be an old man.”

His mother said that, while he touched many lives as a friend, a salesman and a footballer, above all he was a son.

Joanne said: “He was a mummy’s boy, he was my baby, and he still always gave me kisses and cuddles.

I miss that and I’m never going to get it back.

“He died when he was becoming a man, I could already feeling myself losing him a bit even though he was still affectionate.

But now I’ll never get to see him grow up.”

A football team made up of Ben’s friends, Walworth Wanderers, will be playing a tribute match in Burgess Park this Sunday from 6pm.

Life behind bars for killers

BEN PURDY’S remorseless killer Michael Bagnall, 22, yelled “I’m glad he died” as he and his gun-toting uncle were jailed for a total of 58 years for last November’s lovetriangle execution.

Bagnall aimed a torrent of foulmouthed abuse at the judge as he was jailed for life for the murder of the 18-year-old trainee plumber.

He screamed: “Suck your mum, you p***y-hole” before turning to the press bench and sneering: “Put that in your newspapers, I’m glad he’s dead, mother-f*****s.”

Bagnall, who apparently hears voices telling him to harm himself, enlisted his army fanatic uncle Andrew Bayne, 37, to fire the deadly shot.

Bagnall was jailed for life with a minimum of 28 years on November 19, while Bayne was jailed for life with a minimum of 30 years.

Bagnall’s sister Lee-Ann dashed from the public gallery in tears when the sentences were delivered, while Bayne told his nephew to “shut your mouth” and apologised to the judge.

Judge Christopher Moss QC told them: “You, Andrew Bayne, clearly fired the shot that killed him and you, Michael Bagnall, intend[ed] that shot to occur – you are each as guilty of murder as the other.”

Violence flared on November 23 last year amid escalating tensions between Bagnall and Ben over the affections of Ashley AdedejiAdebisi.

Mr Purdy started dating Ashley shortly after she broke off a long-

term relationship with Bagnall because he was violent and abusive.

But Bagnall refused to leave the couple alone, deluging them with messages and threats, calling her a “fat slag” and making rude remarks about her mother.

Ben decided to confront Bagnall with the help of two friends, Callum Malone and Jack Walker, who armed themselves with a metal pole and a bike chain.

They fled when confronted with a knife-wielding Bagnall and Anthony Bayne, 34. Bagnall called for back-up from Andrew Bayne and his two cousins Reece Bayne, 19, and Harry McAleer, 18.

They gave chase and cornered Ben in Mossington Gardens Estate, where he was shot by Andrew Bayne.

Michael Bagnall and Andrew Bayne, of Alpine Road, Rotherhithe, denied murder but were found guilty.

Bagnall was also found guilty of affray, and Bayne was convicted of possession of a firearm with intent.

Reece Bayne, of Concorde Way, also in Rotherhithe, and Harry McAleer, 18, of Elcot Avenue, Peckham were convicted of conspiracy to commit assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Anthony Bayne, also of Alpine Road, Rotherhithe, was convicted of affray.

They are due to be sentenced on December 11.

Judge Moss ordered the seizure of the cache of imitation guns, decommissioned firearms and knives from the Bagnall home.

JOANNE PURDY’S cousin Jean Foster, who lost her son in a stabbing incident in Borough High Street two years, has told the News that it is impossible to appreciate the “everlasting anguish” of losing a loved one unless it has happened to you.

Chris Foster was attacked and killed in a case of mistaken identity outside St Christopher’s Inn on November 29 2013, almost exactly a year before Jean’s cousin Joanne would lose her own son.

This month marks the anniversaries of the deaths of both mothers’ late sons, who Jean said were both taken from them by “senseless” killings.

She told the News: “No one truly knows the everlasting anguish of losing a loved one to these senseless acts of violence until it happens to you.

“Think of your family before using deadly force - there’s no winners. To Ben and Chris: loved you yesterday, love you still, always have and always will.”

Hospitals braced for strike action over NHS reforms Over 1,000 junior doctors at Guy’s, St Thomas’s and King’s

SOUTHWARK HOSPITALS are bracing themselves for more than a thousand doctors striking against NHS reforms next month.

If the industrial action goes ahead, scheduled operations at Guy’s, St Thomas’s and King’s will need to be cancelled to ensure emergency services can run.

Full day walk outs are planned following a ballot by the British Medical Association on December 8 and 16 – the first all-out strike by doctors in NHS history. ‘Emergency care only’ action is also scheduled for December 1.

The 28,000 junior doctors who voted for the strike nationally are worried a new contract will see them working longer, more unsociable hours for less, and put a stop to safeguards preventing hospitals form forcing staff to work dangerously long shift patterns.

For the 800 junior doctors at King’s and 700 at Guy’s and St Thomas’s, the unprecedented action is a heartwrenching decision, according to Chris James, 29, who has been at King’s for three years but was not speaking on behalf of the Trust.

“Doctors at King’s are preparing to stand our ground but it is with a heavy

heart,” he told the News. “We are going to fight this - for what we believe in.” “We really don’t want to do it but if strike action is the only way Jeremy Hunt will listen then we will strike,” said Chris, who added that he frequently worked unpaid overtime because patients needed looking after.

“When we’ve got sick patients we don’t leave- that’s accepted,” he said.

“Our concern is the real issues aren’t being addressed because the people above us don’t understand what we do,” he added, saying money needs to be put into community services to free up much needed hospital beds.

Staff are “hopeless” and “demoralised” in the face of increasing demands to do more for less with the difficult winter months ahead, according to Chris, who said the decision to strike was seen as a “last resort.”

Jeremy Hunt has spoken out against the strike, saying it will be very difficult to avoid harm to patients during the strike and that his proposals include an eleven percent pay rise for doctors.

King’s, and Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospital Trusts said they are both working hard to ensure the impact on patients is kept to a minimum and that those who have non-urgent operations cancelled will be contacted before December 1.

Junior doctors at King’s are ready to ‘stand their ground’ in strike batlle

Courses offered to ex-offenders COURSES IN construction are being offered to young people who have been involved in crime.

The Construction Youth Trust is offering the free six day courses to fourteen to 30-year-olds. The course is also open to young people deemed at risk of offending.

Learners from south London will be prioritised, although all applications are welcome.

Courses include practical sessions in carpentry, tiling, painting and decorating, and plumbing, as well as

OCN Entry Level 3 in Health and Safety.

The courses run in December from 9.30am to 4pm, every Thursday and Friday for three weeks on Thursday 3 and Friday 4; Thursday 10 and Friday 11; Thursday 17 and Friday 18.

Two-year-old Corey sufferes rare condition which leaves him unable to move his face

A ROTHERHITHE pub will hold a fundraiser this Saturday to help pay for a sick two-year-old boy’s “smile surgery.”

Little Corey-Jaii suffers from Möebius syndrome, an extremelyrare neurological condition that restricts movement in the face.

The brave toddler cannot move his eyes laterally, feed himself, blink – or smile.

He was also born with club feet which, although now corrected, means he is forced to wear specialist shoes at all times, even in bed. He also needs to use a walking frame.

His mother Toni Evans said: “Corey can fight anything but unfortunately he can never smile, grimace or have any facial movement at all. So my aim is to raise as much money for when Corey-Jaii is at least five-yearsold for the smile surgery.”

Already over £9,000 has been raised for the life-changing surgery, which may cost up to £50,000.

Toni said: “Smile surgery isn’t just for smiling, it opens a whole new door for Corey as this would help him with better speech ability, movement of face and even the use of a straw - all things we all take for granted every day.”

A fundraiser has been organised

by Dermot Reardon of The Whelans pub in Rotherhithe Old Road, to take place from 7pm on November 28.

Dermot told the News: “The family are always in here for parties, functions and dos, and I always do what I can to help people out like this.

“Everyone in the community is coming together to help. The musicians who are playing on the night will be donating half of their

pay to the fund, and the customers are always so generous, filling jugs with change.

“Other businesses like Donovans beer wholesalers and even the fish and chip shop around the corner are doing what they can and donating money or products.”

Session musician Tony Kelly will be playing on the night, while items donated from the England rugby team and legendary boxer Ricky Hatton will be among those raffled off to raise more funds.

A DRUG smuggler has been jailed for four years after 1.6kg of crystal meth was found at an address in Camberwell.

Team executed an intelligence-led bust on the Elmington Estate and discovered the drugs, with an

approximate street value of £275,000, hidden in a parcel disguised as packets of cigarettes.

Renato Pieterse, 32, was arrested at the scene and later pleaded guilty to the importation of Class A drugs with

the intent to evade a prohibition.

The salesman, who lives at Robert Lowe Close in New Cross, was jailed for four years at Woolwich Crown Court on November 9 and ordered to pay £1,000 court costs.

School stabbings

DULWICH: A fifteen-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder following the stabbing of two teenagers at a Southwark school.

He appeared at Camberwell Magistrates' Court on Saturday, 21 November and also faced charges of grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. The incident, in which two teenagers were hospitalised, took place at Kingsdale Foundation School in Alleyn Park, Dulwich on Thursday November 19.

The police and ambulance services were called at 3:30pm and took the two victims to hospital, one in a critical condition. Both are now stable.

Block blazes

BERMONDSEY: A man has been arrested and a police officer injured following a number of fires at a block of flats in Grange Road, early on Wednesday morning.

Police were called at around 2am to reporters of a dispute at the block, where they found two cars on fire in a rear garage and another blaze in the communal hallway.

Officers forced entry to the flats, where they led twelve residents to safety. One resident had been trapped in his room with the fire outside his door. The officers used fire extinguishers until the fire brigade arrived at around 2.40am. A police officer suffered minor injuries during the arrest of a man at the scene, who was taken into custody at Walworth Police station.

THE REMAINS of a genderconfused Roman skeleton discovered in Southwark has backed up a modern theory that there are not two sexes after all.

The grave of a young woman was uncovered in Harper Road in 1979, dating back to Roman London sometime between AD 50 and 70.

Ground-breaking DNA analysis of her skeleton by the Museum of London showed she physically appeared female, but had male chromosomes.

This corroborates a relatively new scientific theory that the idea of two sexes is ‘too simple’. The theory suggests everyone is a patchwork of genetically different cells, some of which have a sex that doesn’t match the rest of the body, making biological sex more of a spectrum than first thought.

The woman, aged 26 to 35, was also buried in a unique way in Britain at that time - in a wooden coffin with a flagon (tankard) at her head and a bronze mirror and necklace at her feet -suggesting she had a high status in society.

If the dates of her burial are correct she would have been a first generation Londoner, alive at the time of the Roman invasion of Britain and may have witnessed the Boudican Revolt and subsequent devastation of the city.

everything from ancestry to diet and even eye colour.

The blue-eyed fourteen-year-old, who was around 5’ 3” tall, was buried in late Roman London during the 4th century, sometime between AD 300400.

Analysis of trace elements in her teeth revealed she had been eating a diet of meat, fish, vegetables and cereals, but the bones in her forearms showed she also suffered from Rickets, a childhood disease caused by vitamin D deficiency.

She was buried with two glass vessels placed either side of her head and at her feet lay a wooden casket with bronze fittings, inlaid with bone panels. A folding knife was found at her right hip with an ivory handle in the shape of a leopard and a bronze key – suggesting she may have been the daughter or even the young wife of a soldier. Her maternal ancestry derived from southern-eastern Europe and west Eurasia but she was born in north Africa, proving that Londinium always was a hub of cultural diversity.

Senior Curator, Caroline McDonald, said: “We have always understood that Roman London was a culturally diverse place and now science is giving us certainty. People born in Londinium lived alongside people from across the Roman Empire exchanging ideas and cultures, much like the London we know today.”

There were four roman skeletons in total used for this piece of research, which will now all go on display at the Museum of London. The Written in Bone exhibition opens tomorrow and is free to visit.

TWO DANCERS from a Bermondsey-based Irish Dancing school returned with silverware from last weekend’s European Championships – including one high-flyer who won her 35th ever title.

Katy Ashcroft, seventeen, and Erin Healey, nine, both won titles at the two-day The Celtic Association of Irish Dance European Championships event held at Seawick, Essex.

The two Carragher Academy dancers were praised by teacher Sarah Carragher, who said they had done their school proud.

Sarah said: “Katy’s been dancing for eight years now and has won 35 titles.

She’s won national titles, British titles and now a European title. She’s seventeen now and wants to become a teacher when she finishes.”

Erin, who is aged just nine, was also praised and held up as a star of the future.

Sarah said: “She’s done really well, she’s only been dancing for two years. To have won a European title after just two years of dancing is amazing.”

The event was attended by dancers from across Europe.

POLICE ARE appealing for information after a Rotherhithe charity for ex-military personnel was burgled.

Homes 4 Heroes UK, located above the Surdoc Club in Cope Street, was targeted during the early hours of November 18 at around 4.45am.

Police told the News that a “white Toshiba laptop Satellite C55 DA14” was stolen during the burglary, containing templates used to make identity passes for the charity's representatives.

The charity, run by Jimmy Jukes OBE, the Pearly King of Camberwell and Bermondsey, and Michelle Thorpe, the Pearly Queen of Rotherhithe, has now changed the passes for its staff and volunteers.

Hairdressers fear move will leave them on the fringe PECKHAM

PECKHAM HAIRDRESSERS are split over council plans to move them to a new ‘beauty boulevard’.

As plans to redevelop Peckham Rye Station have got back on track, a number of mainly Afro-Caribbean hairdressers and nail bars residing in units along Blenheim Grove are being forced to move.

Southwark Council commissioned artists and business support specialists to come up with a bespoke centre for hair and beauty in Bournemouth Road called ‘Peckham Palms’.

A council statement on the plans said although some businesses were anxious about how the move would affect their trade, “most are looking forward to getting into their new premises.”

But barber, Adam Mizou, who runs a business opposite the station, said he would give the plans the chop.

“We’re not happy,” said the 27-yearold, whose barber shop is thriving.

“It’s going to kill our business completely. There is no footfall over there.

“All of us are not happy,” continued Adam. “Some of us have got families and kids - where are we going to go?”

THOUSANDS OF objectors have succeeded in putting a planning application for luxury flats in Peckham on hold, over fears the development could threaten the future of a thriving music venue.

A new scheme for eleven luxury flats to go up directly in front of the Bussey Building on Rye Lane has been ‘paused’ after Southwark Council received over 3,000 objections, crashing their planning website more than once last week.

The application from Frame Property has gone back to the drawing board while developers talk to business owners in the Bussey Building and Copeland Park, who say they would lose trade as the proposed build would make entering and leaving their premises impossible for customers.

and the man who rescued the Bussey Building, Mickey Smith, said the idea of putting flats in that location was “fundamentally wrong” and is determined to continue to fight the plans.

“If they get residential in here, we’ll close down. It’ll be goodbye Bussey and we won’t have that,” he told the News.

Designs for ‘wish-bone’ bridge unveiled PECKHAM

A “WISH-bone”-style design has been unveiled for the proposed pedestrian and cyclist bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf.

The striking structure would measure 185-metres in length and offer an alternate route across the Thames to the current rail and road tunnels.

If built, it would be the only bridge to the east of Tower Bridge. There are currently 32 to the west.

The bridge would be able to be lifted from the centre, allowing large ships to pass through. According to its architects reForm, lifting the bridge would use up just £10 worth of electricity. This is due to the bridge’s masts acting as counterbalances, allowing an efficient raising

and lowering system.

A spokesperson for reForm said: “The proposed bridge has the potential to bring significant economic benefits to the communities on either side of the river and beyond, and will be a welcoming gateway for all those arriving into London by river.”

Sustrans, a charity promoting travel by foot, cycle and public transport, have been campaigning for the bridge since 2008.

Chief Executive Malcolm Shepherd said: “It could enable millions of sustainable cross-river journeys and make it far easier for people to choose a healthier travel option. With high-quality links to destinations either side, it will make walking and cycling a real choice for hundreds of thousands of residents, workers and visitors.”

Mum fears she will be in a coffin before the council gets around to moving her

A MOTHER-OF-THREE being stalked by her ex-partner says she will be in a coffin rather than a new house if the council does not move her immediately.

The police and MP Neil Coyle have both lobbied Southwark to move Melissa Greenwood, whose name has been changed here for her own safety, as soon as possible.

When she first met her partner eight years ago, Melissa was very happy, but over the years, he became jealous and controlling, even regularly checking her used underwear for evidence of an affair.

“I couldn’t deal with it anymore,” said the 36-year-old, who had to call the police to have her partner removed from the family home.

Since then Melissa says he has not left her alone, constantly texting and emailing, breathing down the phone and, more recently, following her wherever she goes and staring at her through the window.

She has had to change jobs and is now desperate to move house, as he regularly breaks his bail conditions to stand outside of her home.

“You don’t know how it feels being watched all the time. I try to put on a happy face but I can’t do it anymore.

“I just want us to be safe and a normal family. I don’t want to have the stress every day knowing he’s there, looking out of the window and watching my back all the time,” said Melissa, who tried to take her own life last year.

“I thought it was the only escape I had so the kids could be happy and they wouldn’t see any more of this and I could

get away from him.”

So far, Melissa’s ex has not been violent towards her, but she fears for her life if his behaviour gets worse.

“I think he could lose his head because he’s getting worse. I won’t need the house soon because I’ll be in a coffin – I have a feeling it will get to that stage,” she said.

Melissa is currently bidding for family homes on the council’s system but is asking to be given a direct offer of a property so she can be rehoused immediately.

MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Neil Coyle, has been lobbying the council to move Melissa as soon as possible. "It's been more than a month since I first approached the council and Melissa is still waiting for help,” he said.

“I know the council has lost millions in central Government funding since 2010 but providing sufficient help as quickly as possible in circumstances like these must remain a priority. I've asked for an explanation as to how services will be improved."

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark’s cabinet member for housing, said: “I sympathise with this family’s situation, and I can assure you that officers across the council are trying to find them a permanent new home.

“Suitable properties are not always available, and so we have also offered immediate temporary accommodation so that the family can move to safety away from their current home. I appreciate this might not be an ideal situation but clearly the family’s safety must come first, and we will do all we can to help. We will also be inviting Melissa to meet with officers from our housing and domestic violence teams to discuss her options,” he said.

A MOTHER has been “overwhelmed” by more than a thousand pounds of donations to get her son to America and treat his tangerine-sized brain tumour.

U.S. doctors have advised mother-ofthree Kelly Barrett, 35, from the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, they will need to operate on thirteen-year-old Alfie before Christmas. She is now preparing to drop everything to spend nine weeks in the States, so he can get the pioneering proton therapy he needs to stay alive.

Last weekend psychic medium ‘Lisa Jane’ held a fundraiser at the Central Adventure Playground in Peckham, which raised hundreds of pounds, and she is doing the same this Saturday to

support the cause.

“I’m overwhelmed with how people have been with the donations,” said Kelly, who needs to raise £5,000 to pay for her other two children – Freddie, 9, and Bonnie,7 - to go with her and Alfie, as there is no one else who can look after them for nine weeks.

Kelly was particularly moved when Alfie’s Godmother donated £100 and his Uncle Ricky, who is now fighting for his own life in hospital, gave her £150 towards the fund.

“I’m just so grateful,” said Kelly, who is hoping the second psychic reading night on Saturday will bring them close to their target. Doors will open at 6:30 to be seated by 7pm, tickets £10.

MEMBERS OF a scooter gang who targeted a cash-in-transit van in Southwark Park Road last December have been jailed.

Five men from across south London were jailed after pleading guilty to a number of robberies and attempted robberies between June and December last year.

The incident in the Blue, which took place on December 18, was one of six robberies and three attempted robberies to which the men pleaded guilty.

The men, who used high-powered scooters during the raids, were described as a “prolific criminal group” by investigating officer Detective Sergeant Scott Chimes of the Met Police's Flying Squad.

He said: “This was a prolific criminal group whose offending spree in the 2014 would have no doubt continued had they not been identified and arrested after a detailed and complex investigation by the Flying Squad.

“These individuals had a significant impact on crime against cash in transit

deliveries and their arrests and convictions bring an end to their offending. The convictions send out a clear message to those committing this type of offence, the Flying Squad are determined to arrest and convict those involved.”

Three men were jailed this week after pleading guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court, joining two other men who were sentenced previously.

Ricky McDonald, 31, of Rushey Mead, Lewisham, was jailed for six years and two months after pleading guilty to five counts of robbery and one count of money laundering.

Dominic Shields, 26, of Bowditch, Deptford, was jailed for six years and

two months after pleading guilty to four counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery and one count of money laundering.

Jamie Allen, 25, of Stephens Grove, Lewisham, was jailed for six years and six months after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery and two counts of attempted robbery.

Joel Banks, 26, of no fixed address, was jailed for four years and four on 16 December 2014, after pleading guilty to robbery.

Patrick McNally, 25, of Newport Avenue, Canary Wharf, was jailed for three years on 17 December 2014, after pleading guilty to attempted robbery.

‘Noxious gas’ used and gun also found after fight which broke out between 15 people, say police

THE CORONET is having its licence reviewed, as police fear reprisal attacks following a stabbing at the club earlier this month.

Shortly after the venue announced it would be closing in a year, the police requested it have its licence suspended.

On November 8, officers say a fight broke out between fifteen people at the House of Silk event and a “noxious gas” was discharged (such as pepper spray or CS Gas), a person was stabbed and a gun was found.

Although the venue always cooperates with the police after any incident, officers were concerned there would be “retribution and reprisal attacks” especially as a number of similar events are scheduled over the next few months.

The police requested the Coronet’s

licence be suspended pending a full hearing on December 2. Councillors, instead opted to ban the venue from hosting house music events and made search arches compulsory.

There has been a theatre on the site of the Coronet in Elephant and Castle since 1872, but after developers Delancey bought the site along with the shopping centre in December 2013, its future has been in question.

The lease was due to expire in January, but earlier this month Director of the Coronet, Richard Littman, said “positive negotiations” with their landlord had won them a year’s extension on the lease, but that the venue would close its doors after that. Richard would ideally like to relocate the business locally, but spaces of that size are scarce and so far Southwark’s regeneration team have not identified any alternative homes for the live music venue.

Richard declined to comment about the current licensing restrictions.

‘I’m not ready to throw towel in just yet’ says man behind rejected dock pool proposal

CONTROVERSIAL PLANS to build a floating swimming pool in Greenland Dock have been rejected

by Southwark Council’s planning committee – although the applicant has said he is “not ready to throw the towel in just yet.”

Residents were worried about the “diabolical noise” that would come with such the 20 metre by 40 metre facility, as well as the environmental impact of dropping a heated pool in a cold, freshwater environment.

These concerns were both noted by planning officers in the rejection notice.

It said: “Being open to the air and with an opening time of 06:00, noise from swimmers would be both noticeable and

harmful to the amenity and living conditions of residents.”

It added: “No ecology report detailing the potential impact of the scheme on the biodiversity of the dock has been provided.”

Over 50 objections were made to the proposal, while 20 positive comments were also submitted.

Adrian Priestman, who put forward the application, said he would be returning to the council with another application.

He told the News: “It was rejected on the grounds of [a lack of] an ecological report. That’s something I’m going to put in place. All of the ecological questions are unfounded.

“It’s quite an unconventional proposal and it has been a long-winded application. I’m not ready to throw the towel in just yet.”

ROTHERHITHE RESIDENTS fear they are being kept in the dark regarding a 200-home development at South Dock, due to a “seriously flawed consultation process.”

Planning application for the “St George’s Wharf” scheme, which boasts fifteen and 20storey high towers, is expected to be submitted in March 2016.

However, residents living nearby, including Andie Byrnes, claim that not enough work has been done to work with and address the concerns of local people. She said: “It has been a flawed consultation. The sessions last month were restricted in terms of how many people could attend, and only took place over two days. Many people couldn’t make them.

“A workshop was meant to be held this month to allow more people a chance to have

their say, but nothing has been heard of it. The development is going to go ahead – you can’t stop people developing such valuable land.

But people need the chance to feed formally into this project, to vent their concerns and have an open discussion.”

The development will provide council homes, reduced-rent properties and some private houses. It will also see the boatyard completely overhauled, with under-cover workshops and new retail spaces.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council cabinet member for regeneration and

new homes, apologised for the delay in arranging the November workshop, which has now been arranged for December 9.

He said: “Southwark is doing more than any other council to tackle the housing crisis head on, including building new council homes next to South Dock Marina. We want to make sure that our final proposal makes the most of these opportunities, whilst mitigating any negative impacts on local residents. The first two consultation events have been held and we are now promoting the dates for three workshops.

“These have taken slightly longer to confirm than we hoped, but all details are now available on the council’s website and we will be sending out notices to local residents this week about the workshops.”

EVERAL THOUSAND people each year attend the Christmas memorial service at Bermondsey funeral director’s F.A Albins & Sons and this year’s is taking place next Wednesday, December 2nd.

The service gives locals a chance to remember lost loved ones as the festive period approaches. The service includes carol singing, video displays of Albin’s work in Afghanistan and elsewhere overseas, the release of doves, a fireworks display and prayer. The first year after the death of owner Barry Albin-Dyer, his sons Simon and Jon with their kids will end with a tribute to their father and grandfather.

I know how money could be saved to help youth services

YOU POSE the question in your paper, " Should the council find somewhere else to make the cuts, or is there another answer". (‘Editorial: How do we keep our youth services going? Southwark News 19th November 20015).

Your question is prompted by the news that Southwark is proposing to cut its youth service by a huge amount. Cllr Vikki Mills, Cabinet member for children and education, is quoted as saying that difficult decisions have to be made.

Well I have an idea for you and this will come as no surprise to Cllr Mills because she is my local councillor, so she knows all about the concerns expressed by her constituents about the very expensive plans the council have to redevelop Camberwell Old Cemetery.

Opposite my house is an area which is fenced off because there was a large illegal fly tip of waste made into the middle of it. Underneath this thousands of people are buried who were too poor to have a large posh gravestone put over them. The cheapest way to deal with this situation would be to cap off the waste pile, do a bit of landscaping and then turn the area into a nature reserve. This would be of great benefit to the living and I know from the bird and bat walks which took place in that cemetery that young people are really interested in living wild life.

However, instead the council are planning to spend a huge amount of money - they refuse to say how much - to cut down numerous trees, destroy wild life habitats , send loads of huge trucks into the cemetery, dig up the pile of waste, remove some of it and then bury the dead inside what is left of it.

So may I suggest that this scheme is scrapped . 700 people objected to the planning application and I am not aware that any Southwark residents supported it. And let’s consider the cheaper alternative of making this area into a nature reserve.

Neil’s two jobs are a double asset

IN RESPONSE to Gavin Smith’s letter last week saying MP Neil Coyle can’t have two jobs by remaining as a councillor:

Having our local Newington councillor Neil Coyle as both councillor and MP is a fantastic opportunity to have local insights and issues on the Westminster agenda and vice versa.

The benefits flow both ways. Neil has the capacity to handle both roles and, in this unique situation, is double the asset.

Keep up the good work Neil – you are as visible, hard working and accessible as ever.

My trade is dying just to keep cyclists happy

I AM a London cabbie, and read with disbelief Donnachadh MaCarthy’s comments in his column about Jamaica Road (‘Cabbies are wrong not to support cyclists, Southwark News 19th November 20015).

Because of cycle lanes, London traffic is the worst I have ever seen my earnings are down between 20 per cent and 40 per cent. This is not only because of Uber but because of the traffic.

Jamaica Road is now at a crawl from 2.30pm till around 7.30pm the pinch points are so bad the buses struggle to use the bus lanes.

The result means my daughter, who attends a local school, now walks home most evenings as it’s quicker, even though it’s dark and will clearly be less safe.

This traffic increase is because drivers are staying south of the river to avoid the chaos in Whitechapel caused by the new cycle lanes.

Attitudes like Mr McCarthy’s seem to prevail far too often in London. Business costs are going up, as well as journey times and pollution, the whole situation is an incompetent joke just to keep a few angry cyclists happy.

I know he is a decent, well-

intentioned man, but people like him are destroying the road network.

My final point is this - London cabbies will soon be able to buy a battery operated environmental friendly cab - the cost is £55,000.

Anyone with a brain will realise this is ridiculous. If my earnings are much reduced and I can't get about, what's the point? But these observations don't seem to register with anyone. Mr McCarthy’s attitude and others like him are killing my earnings and the earnings of all other businesses that rely on a clear road network.

Leisure centre site will devide communities FURTHER TO the article in Southwark News last week, (‘Agreement reached on town centre for Canada Water’):

London Borough of Southwark’s (LBS) preference for building the new leisure centre on the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre Wild Life area raises many concerns, quite apart from loss of a valuable green space.

One must question exactly what LBS’s vision is for the role of the leisure centre in the Canada Water area and how that is being met.

All of the new private blocks that will surround the proposed site are likely to offer free sports centres, thus serving to further divide communities in the area. The new leisure centre should serve as a means to break down class and economic barriers, rather than reinforce them.

In the opinion of many there is an enormous missed opportunity should LBS go ahead with its preferred location, a somewhat inwardly focused facility and the total lack of physical and visual prominence of the new build in the new town centre.

Now is the opportunity to re-think the role of the leisure centre, better define it, and avoid the mistakes of the past.

The new Canada Water library is a good example of how council-led services and facilities can help create a vibrant heart for Canada Water, but the library alone lacks the critical

mass required to transform the way in which the diverse Canada Water communities interact.

The government is promoting healthy living through actively engaging people, especially children and young people in their physical environment. LBS / British Land (BL) need to deliver an urban environment at Canada Water that encourages and supports people to walk, run and cycle and that provides opportunity for both informal and formal active play for children and young people. How one asks does the proposed new leisure centre meet or exceed such expectations?

Does the LBS / British Land master plan place the leisure centre in the best location to achieve these objectives and positive outcomes for local people?

The role of the council is to champion schemes that create and shape places that are inclusive and knit together the diverse fabric of the area for both current and new residents.

The community sees the new leisure centre as playing a critical and central role in building links between groups old and new in the area.

Given the obscure site LBS / British Land ‘prefer’, one must ask has the design brief for the centre taken this into account?

Is it a priority for LBS? Has this been considered at all?

People live in areas for generations.

Developers and politicians come and go. Hence people want their needs and aspirations to be taken into account. They also want greater transparency in LBS decisions about the regeneration of the area.

As yet nothing has been forthcoming from LBS as to when and why it decided upon its preferred site and rejected its consultant’s recommendation of another more central site. It is therefore to be hoped that LBS / British Land will seize this opportunity to totally re-think the ‘preferred location’ and proposed specification and instead deliver a new leisure centre that is in a prominent location and is something everyone will feel proud to use for years to come.

Better stay local during this festive period

T

HE FESTIVE season is rapidly approaching, and most people are busy making plans to visit family and friends over the holidays.

Many people also take time off work at this time of year, and as a result this is a quieter time for public transport. Hence, train operators tend to choose the Christmas period as one during which they undertake major works, and this year is no exception. For those who will still need to travel to work, or use public transport to get around over the festive season, forward planning will be needed.

The Southeastern stations at London Bridge, Cannon Street, Charing Cross and Waterloo East will be closed from 8pm on Christmas Eve until 4am on January 4th. This is to accommodate some major building work as part of the Thameslink project. During this period, trains will be diverted to run to and from Victoria or Blackfriars instead, or will start and terminate at New Cross.

Tickets will be valid on local buses, and reasonable Overground and tube services. Southern rail will be running some services to and from London Bridge, but services are likely to be busier.

Of course, the big occasion when Londoners may feel the strain is New Year’s Eve. As well as the closures and reductions outlined above, there will be no trains at Blackfriars from around 10pm on New Year’s Eve. The traditional fireworks display in central London is being ticketed again this year, which may reduce the numbers of people travelling into the city. However, if you are planning to see in 2016 in Trafalgar Square or similar, you need to be aware that your travel options home may be more limited than usual, and you will need to plan ahead.

I would encourage Southwark News readers to maybe take a look at local venues this year and think about doing your partying locally! This will save you a potentially stressful journey home, and supports your local pubs, clubs or restaurants.

Although it may not seem like it, those running the Thameslink project do appreciate they are causing inconvenience, but are trying to mitigate this by choosing traditionally quieter times to do major works. Although we may all have to compromise over our festive travel this year, when the project is finally finished in 2018, everyone’s journeys should be easier and more comfortable all year round.

Well worth the Lautrec food & drink

rench cuisine was once the be all and end all of fine dining, but that mantle slipped several years ago, when the rest of the world began adapting their traditional dishes to modern tastes while the French rested on their laurels and fell behind, writes Michael Holland...

But this is the time to embrace all that is great about France and what it has given to humanity, as Andrew Neil did in his recent TV rant. Plus, when is it not a good time to gorge yourself on butterdrenched snails, and oleaginous salad dressings?

And so it was that I dragged Nina The Inbetweener away from her Masters’ assignments and in to Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec for some real comfort food.

Well, she is French so I knew this would be right up her boulevard.

On entering, from a cold Kennington night, we found a warm space full of nooks, crannies and intimate alcoves where candlelit tables were set for intimate dinners. Water arrived soon after we settled, and then a really nice Tempranillo promptly followed - a fruity and full-bodied red that served its purpose very well. We were handed menus.

The Inbetweener cheese fiend found a Goats Cheese salad with chargrilled artichokes by swerving the king prawns in a creamy mushroom sauce, which surprised me. ‘I don’t think my stomach could handle the richness of all that cream right now,’ said the stressed out student who has been living on double espresso and psychology books for the past month. But this salad was piled high and swimming in lovely dressing, so I was called upon to help out. The cheese was creamy and the artichokes divine.

Me, all I have to worry about is remembering to record Gogglebox, so was straight in for the Burgundy Snails in Garlic Butter. And what a lovely half dozen they were too: meaty, buttery and garlicky. Ooh la la!

Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec goes out of its way to create a French atmosphere: the walls are adorned with prints by Monet, Degas, Renoir, et al, plus, of course, Lautrec. Jazz plays quietly in the background for this is a Jazz Bar as well, and offers live music every night.

Magnifique.

Nina talked of her assignment problems and, for the first time, I found jazz a better alternative noise… ‘Nice,’ I said.

For my main course I had chosen the Short Back Rib, cooked for 48 hours and coated in a sauce that had none of that

usual barbecue taste that you reminds you every food chain place you’ve ever had the misfortune of entering. As I tried to turn this gorgeous slab of beef over the bone just fell out. It was so tender and succulent a newborn could’ve ate it. The rib was partnered with Pumpkin Mash (not to my liking, though Nina found it very moreish) and Brocolli. This was a good and hearty meal.

On the other side of the candle, a soft focus Nina was tucking into her Supreme of Cod that was beached atop a dune of crushed new potatoes, with a Sauce Vierge lapping up the sides. ‘Hmmm,’ she moaned, doing her best Nigella Lawson , ‘This fish is cooked to perfection.’

I touched it with my fork and a piece flaked off. She was right.

We both struggled to get through this course and, as delicious as it was, none of us quite managed it. Our water and wine glasses were once again topped up, so we sat sipping wine looking contented. And bloated in my case.

We were both amazed at how the restaurant offers such a high level of service for the price of £22 for two courses, or £27 for three. But were not surprised that there were no empty tables.

When our waiter came with talk of dessert we almost died, but still decided to ‘just have a look…’ Eventually, after much deliberation and skirting round the ice cream option, I loosened my belt, undid my top button and went for a Crème Brûlée – ‘With two spoons, s’il vous plait, Garçon’. I definitely weren’t going to attempt one of those bad boys on my own, and it was a good job I did recruit Nina to ride shotgun on this as it came up rather large. Mind you, as soon I cracked that caramel top there were sparks coming off her spoon as we jousted for pole position in that dish of deliciousness.

Our host invited us upstairs to take a drink and listen to the live jazz, but we made our excuses and left.

IT WAS George Orwell who coined the phrase: “Football is war, minus the shooting”, writes Joey Millar...

He wasn’t far off, especially during the early days of organised action.

Whereas today’s stars are often derided for their play-acting and aversion to physical play, at the turn of the 20th century football was a very different ball game. Players could hack down opponents at will, fights went unpunished and, with no substitutes, badly injured players soldiered on for the full 90 minutes.

You can see where Orwell was coming from.

But for a generation of players during the early-1900s, football was replaced by a very real conflict. When World War One broke out, thousands of young men across the country swapped boots for bayonets and touchlines for trenches.

Dulwich Hamlet were no different.

The players who were cheered on by thousands of fans every Saturday found themselves shipping off to Europe and Africa to line up against a very different type of opposition.

Many of them would never return to the playing field.

Stan Peart was one of 22 Hamlet players killed during the war. He was killed less than two months after arriving in France but his time as a soldier was, while brief, marked by bravery and drama.

A former football, cricket and swimming captain at Bellenden Road School and a Southern Suburban League winner with Dulwich Hamlet’s reserves, the 23-year-old was assigned to be part of the bombers, a group of soldiers known as the “suicide squad” due to the danger they put themselves in.

His brutal death in Givenchy, France, after he selflessly signed up to take part in an extremely treacherous mission, was relayed to his family in no-nonsense terms by his company officer.

“I am afraid he was hit by a bomb, for when we found him next day, he was greatly damaged but quite dead.” wrote Lieutenant H Persse wrote to one of Stan’s siblings.

“The last I saw of him was when his supply of bombs had run out - he was standing his ground very coolly on top of a German trench using a bayonet to great effect.

“I always knew Stanley Peart as one of best men. When the call came for bombers (a most dangerous job) Peart didn’t wait to be selected - he volunteered and paid the price.”

Four days before Stan’s death, another Hamlet player was killed while refusing to back down in the face of extreme danger. Archibald John Andrews, who also kitted out for the Surrey FA and Middlesex FA allstar teams, was struck down while taking part in that most desperate WW1 activity: the march across No Man’s Land.

Without the support of either machine guns or artillery, Archibald helped launch an attack at Loos, in an attempt to take a German trench at Vimy Ridge. They were bombarded with artillery to such an extent that, by the end of the onslaught, the official record stated: “The original ‘B’

Company had been swept away.”

What makes his death stand out, however, was the fact that he predicted it. Prior to the raid, Archibald was winning in a card game – something that soldiers viewed as unlucky during the war. When the men were informed of their upcoming mission he told a fellow soldier that he would not make it through the battle – and he was right.

The cruelties of the war can be traced through the fates of other

Dulwich Hamlet players who never made it home. The deaths of Reginald Astill and George Arthur Popple were both mown down on the first bloody day of the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. Tom Rose, the only Dulwich player to score a hat-trick on his debut, also suffered a fate common to WW1 soldiers: a fatal infection to a seemingly innocuous wound.

Others, like Louis Frank Seidel, died in mysterious circumstances – the only thing certain is that the fourth-

team Hamlet player never returned home. Eddie Bescoby died after being stabbed with a bayonet, Sidney Beales went missing in action and Percy Sills, who died five days before peace was declared, died of influenza without ever making it to the continent – spending the majority of the war training in Britain, as well as combating Irish rebels during the Dublin Easter Rising in 1916.

The 22 Dulwich Hamlet players who died in WW1 will forever be

remembered for both their feats in blue and pink as well as in khaki.

Whether it was in Champion Hill or the Western Front, the bravery and dedication of these men once the whistle blew will never be forgotten.

Winkworth expects an improved housing market in 2016

D

espite the unexpectedly clear-cut election outcome in May, the anticipated bounce in the housing market has been late to materialise in 2015, with the sales market being particularly slow in prime central London. We believe, however, that while concerns around the General Election limited transactions, particularly at the upper end of the market, a large part of the slowdown can be attributed to the stamp duty changes introduced in the latter part of 2014, which saw a significant rise in the tax for properties above £900,000.

Transactions below this threshold have been more buoyant, particularly as interest rates have remained low and mortgage lending has increased.

Moving into 2016 we expect market conditions to be similar, with stamp duty undermining demand for more expensive properties but low mortgage rates and wage inflation adding momentum at the lower end of the market.

Central London Our expectation is that central London will continue to be affected by higher stamp duty, with buyers taking this cost into account

when considering what they are prepared to pay per sq. ft. We believe, however, that this added burden will be progressively absorbed over the course of 2016 - albeit with fewer transactions - with the changes having little impact from 2017 onwards.

While this adjustment is taking place, we expect there will be a divide in the behaviour of domestic buyers and international investors. Domestic needs such as upsizing and proximity to schools and work will mean that residents will be forced to accept this cost or move further afield, whereas international property investors may wait until costs are more favourable to them. This is supported by the latest research from our Knightsbridge and Chelsea office, which shows that 81% of recent enquiries have been from domestic buyers.

Further headwinds for international buyers are the strengthening pound, particularly for European buyers, changes to the nondom status and increases in capital gains tax.

Demand for flats under £2 million should see the greatest demand and we foresee the

price of these growing by 2% compared to a flat market for both flats and houses above this threshold.

Greater London With the mortgage market remaining

competitive and employment figures improving, we envisage that the Greater London property market will see price increases moving into 2016, particularly with a positive impact from lower stamp duty on properties below £1 million.

We expect price growth of around 6% for flats while house prices, most of which are priced above £1 million, may rise by a more steady 3%.

Country With the election out of the way, we expect that interest will resume in a move to the country to take advantage of the record price gap with London. The core market below £1 million will be the strongest performer in this market.

Again, low mortgage rates will play a role in encouraging those in the country to move up the ladder or take their first step onto it. As such we expect price growth of around 5% in the country market in 2016.

London Rentals The private rental sector now represents 30% of the London property market and we expect rentals to continue to grow in importance, with a shortage of supply underpinning prices. We anticipate steady growth of 3-4% in the price of Greater London rentals, slightly above wage inflation.

This will be supported by a reduction in supply as some landlords sell off secondary letting properties and consolidate their portfolios to offset the increased costs from the changes to tax allowances announced in the last Budget, as the buy-to-let sector remains on the government agenda affecting sentiment to invest.

In prime central London, prices will continue to be affected by the decline in demand that has troubled the area for the past two years, as tenants look for better value for money in zone two and beyond. Indeed, Winkworth’s Corporate Services department has noticed a considerable number of searches in these locations rather than the usual request for a prime central London rental. As such, we anticipate that prices will plateau with 0% growth.

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to prohibit vehicles from proceeding and stopping on a certain section of A200 Jamaica Road to enable telecom works to be executed.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on A200 Jamaica Road eastbound between its junctions with Marigold Street and Cherry Garden Street.

The Order will be effective between 2nd December 2015 and 4th December 2015 every morning 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM or until the works has been completed. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes; (2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

THE A201 GLA ROAD (BLACKFRIARS ROAD, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF STOPPING) ORDER 2015

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable redevelopment works at Nos.128-150 Blackfriars Road to take place.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle except those vehicles being used in connection with the redevelopment of Nos. 128-150 Blackfriars Road from stopping on the eastern kerb-line of Blackfriars Road opposite Peabody Square, Block B.

The Order will be effective at certain times from 12:01 AM on the 30th November 2015 until the works have been completed. The prohibition will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibition will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibitions are in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs

THERE ARE bigger tests to come, and soon, but Millwall are making the facile home win against opponents in the bottom half of the league routine.

Colchester came to The Den with the worst defensive record of any of the 92 clubs in the top four divisions in England and, aptly, it

was in the thirteenth minute that they showed their luck was not about to change against a rampant Lions side.

There appeared little danger when Shaun Williams hooked a ball forward until U’s defender Tom Eastman made something out of nothing for striker Lee Gregory by misjudging the flight of the ball.

Gregory still had a bit to do but drew goalkeeper Jamie Jones and finished with a swagger.

SHANE FERGUSON’S builder dad was at The Den to see his son grab his first goals for Millwall and continue to lay the foundations for what could be a successful career in a Lions shirt.

The Northern Ireland international is becoming a firm favourite with Millwall fans and the ovation they gave him when he was replaced late on against Colchester indicated they would be quite happy to see his stay extended beyond the end of his loan in January.

Ferguson senior moved to London recently and the winger is happy to have a familiar face keeping up with his progress.

He said: “My dad’s here, he’s working over here so he gets to come to the home games now. It’s good to have some family here, to be honest.

“He’ll be here for a few months. He’s a brickie and there’s plenty of work. There’s not much work at home, you have to go travelling these days.”

The Fergusons are also making plans for a trip to France next summer with the 24year-old set for a role in Northern Ireland’s first ever European Championships. The on-loan Newcastle player admitted that prospect excites him and he also expressed the hope that his good form will catch the eye of his international boss Michael O’Neill.

“I can’t wait, I’ve been thinking about it every night since we qualified,” he said.

“It’s just great for Northern Ireland and I just hope we can do really well when we go out there.

“People watch my games for (O’Neill) and he’s heard I’ve done well and he just wants me to keep fit and keep playing.

That makes it a lot easier for him as well.

“Hopefully a lot of people saw (his goals) but I just have to keep working hard and do it every week now and get a few more goals as well.”

MILWALL U21 boss Justin Skinner says new signing Harry Donovan is an “unsung hero”.

DONOVAN, 17, made his first start for the Elite Development Squad since his move from Arsenal as Skinner’s side came from a goal down to knock Swansea out of the Premier League Cup. Swansea went ahead just before the break through Keston Davies but Mikael Ndjoli equalised and Millwall held on through extra-time before Ndjoli grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner to send his side through to the last sixteen.

It was a big scalp for Millwall, who operate a Category Two academy, against a club who have Category One status.

And Skinner was delighted with the contribution of the new recruit.

The U21 boss said: “He’s a bit of an unsung hero for us in midfield. He’s come to prove himself and win an U21s contract, which shows a lot of character.

“I’m not being funny but a lot of the boys that come from the top clubs expect contracts at clubs like ours but he’s agreed to come in and prove himself.

“He did very well. It was his first game for the U21s the other night.

He didn’t know he was playing until we named the team before kick-off and he applied himself really well.

T WAS the type of night in the north with the wind and rain driving in from the Irish Sea where you just wanted to pack up, go home and draw the curtains on the world.

And that was pretty much the feeling from Neil Harris as he refused to allow any of his players talk to the media after the 2-1 defeat that was Millwall’s first in ten games.

Instead, the players got straight on the team coach and Millwall will have to learn what it is to be a marked side. Fleetwood sensed a scalp almost from the first moments at Highbury Stadium and went after their opponents with a vigour that was relentless.

They certainly didn’t look like a side that had gone into the game in 18th place in the League One table and watching them tear into and then tear apart Millwall one was reminded of Alex Ferguson’s barbed quote when he riled Kevin Keegan by suggesting teams try harder against Manchester United.

Harris picked the same side that had beaten Colchester 4-1 on Saturday but hinted afterwards his selection was wrong.

Colchester’s midfield, outnumbering Millwall, dominated to the extent that two of Millwall’s most impressive performers recently, George Saville and Shane Ferguson, were withdrawn in the second half.

Fleetwood dominated for most of the 90 minutes apart from a spell shortly after the break when Aiden O’Brien and Shaun Williams both shot over the bar.

A glimpse of how much Fleetwood were on the front foot in the first half could be seen in the gradual change of left-back Amari’i Bell’s positioning. By the end of the opening 45 minutes he was operating almost as a left-sided attacker and Shaun Cummings, already overworked trying to find a way to shackle Tarique Fosu-Henry, had another problem to solve.

He was then quickly off his line to deny the dangerous David Ball who had again broken through a Millwall defence that was repeatedly caught flat-footed. Archer then bravely flung himself at the feet of Ball after initially spilling Antoni Sarcevic’s effort from outside the box.

Fleetwood have been inconsistent this season but the way they took the game to Millwall was more like their dominance in the 4-0 win over Burton than the tameness of the 1-0

defeat at home to Chesterfield.

Still, against the run of all that play, Millwall could have gone in ahead at half-time had Steve Morison’s brilliant looping header that came off the bar been a bit lower.

Millwall flickered to life at the start of the second half, but Fleetwood were soon back into their stride and when the goal came 65 minutes in it had looked inevitable for most of the evening.

Williams did go close when he whistled a shot over from the edge of the area, but Fleetwood mounted a

sustained spell of pressure and Byron Webster produced two superb clearing headers before Archer had to stretch and tip Eggert Jonsson’s snap shot over the bar.

The reprieve was short-lived, though, and when Fosu-Henry scorched a cross to the back post Jonsson stooped to head in.

The movement of the front three of Fosu-Henry, Ball and Henen was a problem all evening for Millwall and Harris could be seen gesturing at his defence to push up when the ball was deep in the Fleetwood half. That was

t was frustrating. We were beaten by the better team.

It was thoroughly disappointing because we were second best all around the park.

We didn’t hit the standards that we hit in the last nine games. I said to the boys, yes it’s frustrating, but we’ll learn from that. I’ll certainly learn from it. I’ll look at myself and my team selection in the conditions we faced.

We’ll look at what we could have done better but we’ll also take the positives, there were a few. But we’ve got to learn as a group.

We’ve got to be stronger mentally and physically in games like that.

For nine games we were brilliant but we got beaten by 25 minutes of football.

I look at myself and ask did I pick the right players for the type of game and the conditions. That’s the first thing I do when I get on the bus and start watching the video back with my staff. We’ll ask if I picked the right team, the right tactics.

And then we’ll look at our players and ask did they perform, could they have been better but also how could we have made them better. That’s the key. What more information could we have given them?

I’ll certainly look at myself. The players are disappointed but there’s no doom and gloom because we got beaten by the better team.

Unusually for Archer, when he had the chance to launch a counterattack his kick-outs invariably drifted way too far for his front two to make anything of them. His manager could also be heard screaming at his keeper to be more careful with his distribution in the windy conditions.

Fleetwood rarely let up, playing at a much higher tempo than their visitors and moving the ball much

more swiftly. They just seemed a lot fresher than Harris’ side.

Millwall did create a handful of chances but it was chaos rather than creativity that brought them.

None of their attacking four players could get into the game as the home side worked ferociously hard to deny them any space.

After being so influential recently it was an abrupt low for Saville when he was taken off in front of watching Wolves boss Kenny Jackett and it seemed cruel on Ferguson that Michael O’Neill was present a game

too late.

Harris brought on Fred Onyedinma with ten minutes left and stationed O’Brien behind Morison with Lee Gregory moving wide but it didn’t really result in any more attacking cohesion and only meant Fleetwood posed more of a threat on the break.

It never really looked like the Lions’ night and Pressley’s side sealed it late on when Bobby Grant’s corner drifted into Archer’s goal.

Millwall halved the deficit in added time when Byron Webster scored from their only corner, but they

never did enough to get anything from the game.

Ambler: We’re not worried about potential O’Brien bids

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Andy Ambler says he “welcomes” interest in Lions players, as it’s a sign of how well they are performing.

Some reports have linked Crystal Palace with a move for Aiden O’Brien recently and several Premier League and Championship clubs have sent scouts to watch him this season.

The former Republic of Ireland international striker has scored nine goals in all competitions and that has alerted some of the bigger clubs to his talent.

The 22-year-old has also demonstrated his versatility in Neil Harris’ side, playing on both wings or in a central role up front.

Millwall secured a number of their younger stars on new deals during the summer and Ambler isn’t worried about potential bids materialising in January.

“It’s good that we’re getting interest in our players and I welcome that interest,” he said. “But it doesn’t mean they’re going to go anywhere because we’ve already signed contracts with them to

keep them here.

“It’s fantastic if there’s interest and that’s where we need to be as a club.

People can show interest if they like. The players have to knuckle down to keep doing what they are doing to get to that point.

“But all our young players are with us well into 2017.”

PARIS Cowan-Hall admitted his time at Millwall has been “frustrating” after he joined Bristol Rovers on an emergency onemonth loan deal this week.

Cowan-Hall, 25, has made just 11 appearances for the Lions since he joined from Wycombe last January. His only start came in the FA Cup against AFC Fylde where he was withdrawn at half time, having made little impression against the non-league side.

He now hopes this move to a league where he played 45 times for Wycombe can help get his career back on track after an injury-hit time with Millwall.

“It has been stop-start and frustrating in ways, so it is a chance for me to play consistently again,” Cowan-Hall said. “I have played quite a few games at this level and know what to expect, so to speak.”

Cowan-Hall made his debut for Rovers against Stevenage on Tuesday night but, despite setting up the first goal, he couldn’t prevent them losing 2-1 to Teddy Sheringham’s side.

NEIL HARRIS has challenged his players to bounce back against Bury this Saturday, after seeing Millwall surrender their nine-game unbeaten run at Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night.

The Lions were off-colour throughout against Steven Pressley’s Cod Army, as they failed to manage the wet and blustery conditions in Lancashire.

Fleetwood battered Millwall for most of the 90 minutes and but for Jordan Archer, who produced three excellent saves in the first half to prevent certain goals, the final score could have been more damaging than 2-1.

Harris admitted his side didn’t deserve to get anything from the game.

He told the News: “Collectively as a group we can do better and we will be better on Saturday.

“It would have been against the run of play had we scored. It

would have been harsh on Fleetwood, but that’s football.

“They got the first goal and we had to chase the game and went with three up front, with four strikers on the pitch.

“It didn’t quite happen for us and the goal comes slightly too late for us to rally. We didn’t get ourselves in the final third with good quality to force set-pieces, which we’re good at.

“The one set-piece we did get we put the ball in the net.

“We have to learn and be better with the football and certainly better without the ball.”

Fleetwood’s goals came through two set-pieces, the second a Grant corner that eluded Archer, but Harris wasn’t blaming his goalkeeper for the error.

“It was a terrific learning curve for him tonight on how to manage the game,” Harris said. “I think he’ll be disappointed with the second goal.

“He’s a young man learning his trade and in U21 football he wouldn’t have played in many games like that. It’s very good for him, experience-wise, and it’s not about looking back on mistakes and blaming. It’s about learning.”

Millwall had to come from behind to equalise before Ndjoli scored a 120thminute winner to add to the four goals he scored for the U18s in their FA Cup win last week.

“He’s doing really well,” Skinner said.

“He keeps on upping his game. He was finding his feet last year as a first year and finding it a little bit difficult but he’s knuckled down.

“With Alfie Pavey being in the first team and Jamie Philpot out injured Mikael has had to step up and to be fair he’s done really well.

“We had a very young team the other night but the boys showed real character.

For a mix of young boys and young pros to carry on going until the 120th minute was particularly pleasing.”
