The council needs to find a way to help the Feminist Library

AT THE time of going to press, nearly 15,000 people had signed a petition calling for Southwark Council to drop its new rent demands for the Feminist Library, located in Westminster Bridge Road.

The library, which last year celebrated its 40th anniversary, says it is being asked for a 150% rent increase by Southwark Council – although the council has since clarified that the library has not, in fact, paid any rent at all over the last seven years, simply paying an annual service charge. Citing local government funding cuts, they are now asking for market rent.

Regardless of the semantics, the library say they have no chance of paying these new costs. They are therefore facing eviction by the council when the rent deadline passes at the end of April – a sad end to a valuable facility.

It is easy to sympathise with the council at first glance. At a time when the council is facing £47m in funding cuts, handing out rent-free accommodation to organisations in the borough cannot be expected – in fact, the decision not to ask for rent since the library moved in seven years ago seems outright bizarre. This was not a gesture of goodwill by the council – it simply appears that they never got around to asking for it.

But, despite this, a service like the Feminist Library is too valuable a facility for the borough to risk losing. Run by volunteers and boasting 7,000 books on feminism, the importance of the library should not be understated. It is a social commodity recognised of national, never mind boroughwide, importance.

Asking for rent is understandable - but doing so suddenly after seven years has left the library in the lurch. Perhaps rent could be increased in a gradual basis, which could allow the library to work towards securing greater funding. If not, maybe a reduced rent should be considered given as a compromise.

The council say they “recognise and appreciate” the good work being done by the library. If they really mean this, we hope they work with the library to ensure that such an important facility remains in the borough.

What more does Millwall have to do?

LAST WEEK, Lewisham Council postponed a controversial compulsory purchase order which would have seized land surrounding Millwall’s stadium and handed it to developers Renewal.

A tit-and-tat between the club and the council followed, in which Lions chairman John Berlyson claimed the cabinet had not considered the club’s own plans for the area, while the council claimed they had never received detailed proposals.

In this week’s paper, we reveal the plans that were submitted in March 2013 by the club. It features proposals for residential space, student accommodation, commercial and retail areas and a promise to keep the club’s community centre located at the heart of the community. If this isn’t detailed, then what is?

Resident campaigns again over filth in his communal stairwells

AN ELEPHANT and Castle resident campaigning against the filthy state of his council block’s communal stairwell returned to Southwark Council this week for a number two “dirty protest”.

The News covered AJ Hilditch’s first demonstration in June, when he sat outside the council’s Tooley Street headquarters with toilet paper and a face mask. He returned this week to repeat the stunt, explaining that little had been done in the meantime to improve the cleanliness of Newman House – or “Pooman House” as he has taken to calling it.

The 37-year-old said: “It’s the smell of p**s that’s the worst, a concentrated morning p**s smell that just fills the flat. There is sh*t up the wall, blood up the wall – I’m not putting up with it anymore.”

AJ, who is trying to set up a dog-walking and dog day-care business from his flat, says that the mess is handicapping his attempts to get his company off the ground.

He said: “I’m trying to get off benefits but I can’t say I’d be too keen about leaving my dog with someone who lives in an apartment block with blood, sh*te and pee layered all

over the entrance and up the walls. It will potentially finish my business before it’s started and cost the borough a couple of part time jobs to boot!”

He said that he wanted some real action from the council, not just empty gestures.

He said: “Councillor Livingstone came out with a cup of tea while I was protesting on Monday but I’m going to keep coming back until something is done. I’m at my wit’s end.”

Cllr Livingstone, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said “nobody should have to put up with” AJ’s situation.

He said: “I have spoken to Mr Hilditch and arranged to make a visit to Newman House this week, to try to find a suitable solution.

Our cleaning teams respond swiftly to any reports of this sort, but I agree that prevention is better than cure.

“A security door could help and we had originally scheduled Newman House to have one fitted last year - but unfortunately residents voted against this in three separate ballots.

“Whilst we cannot go against residents' wishes, if a majority now wants to have a door installed we will happily look into this, I am also looking into the ballot rules, to ensure we do what everyone would prefer.”

A MILLWALL-mad couple celebrated their wedding with an on-field appearance at the Den last weekend – just hours after they had walked down the altar and tied the knot.

Chris Prete and his beloved Sue Keegan married at the Southwark Registry Office on February 20, before being whisked away by the Millwall fans’ bus to the Windsor Pub in the Old Kent Road for a prematch pint.

Bermondsey boy Chris said: “When I first met Sue ten years ago, I started taking her to Millwall. We now go to every home and away game and have only missed a handful of games in the last eight years. I served on the Millwall Supporters’ Club committee for five years and write for The Lion Roars fanzine. So you can see: Millwall means everything to us, it is our social life.”

The happy couple then made their way to the Den, where there were invited onto the pitch as a wedding day treat. Waiting in the tunnel, the pair were delighted when Lions

players Jimmy Abdou and David Forde shook their hands. Others went a little further.

Chris, 57, said: “Steve Morison gave Sue a kiss in the tunnel, which

made her day!”

On the field, the players continued their generosity with a very special wedding gift: three points in the form of a thorough 3-0 win over

Peterborough United.

There, the wedding party celebrated the marriage and the win with some slices of a specially-designed Millwall wedding cake, which was created by a Chelsea-supporting friend. The couple met shortly before Chris suffered a stroke in 2008. Sue, 59 helped nurse him back to health and they have been inseparable ever since.

Unfortunately, due to the stroke, Chris is unable to work and the couple only had a shoe-string budget for the wedding. Luckily, he said, the generosity of his friends and the club ensured a “heart-warming” day.

Chris and Sue are spending their honeymoon in Doncaster this weekend – where Millwall just so happen to be playing their next league game.

ROAD WORKS are set to cause queues at the Elephant and Castle roundabout between February 29 and March 13.

All major resurfacing works spread over the two weeks will take place between the hours of 9pm and 5am, and are part of Transport for London’s ongoing £25m for the roundabout.

The first to be affected will begin with New Kent Road northbound and Newington Causeway on Monday Feb 29 and March 1.

Brigade offers free fire alarms

SOUTHWARK: Fears that rogue landlords are skiving on their duty to ensure tenants have working smoke alarms has prompted the London Fire Brigade to offer them for free.

Tenants in privately rented properties will be able to apply for free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms via the Brigade’s website.

It became law for land lords to provide alarms since October last year, and those that fail can be punished with a £5,000 fine.

Elephant and Castle Link Road will be closed southbound, so road users are advised to use St George's Road or Garden Road. Link Road northbound will be reduced to one lane on Saturday March 5 and Monday March 7.

There will be no access to the junction from Link Road northbound on Sunday, March 6, so use St George's Road instead.

St George's Road will be closed on March 8, and on the following day New Kent Road will be closed eastbound.

London Road will be closed southbound and Newington Causeway will be closed northbound on March 12. The final disruption will be the closure of Walworth Road on Sunday, March 13.

Robert Mortby, 28, of no fixed address, opened fire in front of revellers and a hen party in the Rose and Crown pub in Rodney Road on July 28, 2012, it is claimed.

Richard Walsh was hit twice in the abdomen, where the bullets are still lodged, while another bullet grazed the leg of his friend, Christopher Green.

Mortby fled the scene after the alleged Saturday night shooting and was on the run until he agreed to be extradited from Spain in September last year, the court heard.

Prosecutor Zoe Johnson QC said: “The two men lived in the same area and it appears had something of a drugs connection. Richard Walsh had shared a joint with an acquaintance of his, this defendant Robert Mortby.

“Mr Walsh believes that because he either smoked too much of that joint of cannabis or didn’t give the cannabis back Robert Mortby became annoyed with him.

“You might think it is unlikely to have been something quite so inconsequential. Whatever the truth as to why this shooting took place, we suggest the evidence demonstrates the defendant and his brother, David Mortby, entered the Rose and Crown pub that night, where this defendant shot Richard Walsh without warning.”

not seen Mortby since they shared a joint a week or two earlier. At around 4pm on July 28, he claims he saw Mortby’s brother on the street, then spent the evening drinking with Mr Green in the Rose and Crown pub.

Between 8pm and 9pm that night, Mr Walsh saw David Mortby again, this time staring through the pub window, and then at around 10.30pm he noticed Robert Mortby standing outside the pub.

Mr Walsh went into the toilets with his friend and asked him to take him home, but when they emerged they saw Mortby come into the pub.

The prosecutor said: “Mr Walsh said the defendant had a stern expression on his face and that he ‘zoned into me’. He put his hands into the air and said he didn’t want any trouble.”

Mr Walsh was hit from behind with a bottle and when he turned round saw David Mortby leaving through the back door, the court heard.

“Immediately after Richard Walsh had been hit on the back of the head with the bottle, the Crown's case is this defendant then shot Richard Walsh at close range. Mr Walsh fell back into a chair. It would appear three shots were fired.”

The court heard Mr Walsh did not see who shot him, but Ms Johnson added: 'The prosecution case is that although Richard Walsh didn't see who actually pulled the trigger, it’s clear he was cornered by the Mortby brothers and we suggest shot by this defendant, Richard Mortby.”

Mortby, of no fixed address, denies attempted murder and possession of a firearm on July 28. His brother pleaded guilty to affray.

ONE THOUSAND warning leaflets have been posted through letterboxes in Dulwich, amid rising fears that the Croydon Cat Ripper is now carrying out “monstrous” acts in the area.

Last week, the News revealed that two cats, including a kitten, had been found mutilated in Dulwich on February 16. One of the cats, found in Pellatt Road on February 16, had been beheaded and “displayed” in a gruesome manner.

It has now come to light that two more cats were killed in similar incidents before Christmas in West Dulwich, while a fox was also found maimed in the area last weekend.

resident Sarah Hodges, to deliver the flyer across the area in an effort to spread awareness.

She told the News: “He seems to be in Dulwich at the moment and there have been a couple of sightings of people acting strangely around cats.

“The message I want to get out there is that we are all reporters, we all have a camera in our pocket. If anybody sees anything suspicious, and providing it is safe to do so, please take a photo of the person or their vehicle, particularly the number

plate.”

Raw chicken, which is believed to be used by the killer to lure the victims, has also been spotted on Dulwich roads.

Sarah, who is coordinating the leafleting campaign with a team of 80 volunteers, praised the people of East Dulwich for their pro-active approach to the killings in their area.

She said: “East Dulwich people, particularly online, really have pulled

together in sharing information and keeping each other updated, more than any other area I have seen. We have a fantastic army of volunteers there.

“It is a horrendous crime. It is one thing to lose a possession, but to take someone’s pet and hurt it is just monstrous.”

Feminist Library faces eviction as it’s charged rent for first time in 7 years

THE FEMINIST Library has been threatened with eviction from its Westminster Road premises on the first day of Women’s History Month – after being asked for rent

by Southwark Council for the first time in seven years.

A petition, signed by over 13,000 of the library’s supporters, is calling for a “rent increase” to be dropped. However, the council’s finance boss revealed that the library has not paid any rent since moving in, only contributing a service charge.

Councillor Fiona College, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Modernisation, explained: “Whilst we recognise and appreciate the work that’s been done by the Library, we have a very clear duty to ensure our assets are being managed responsibly, and that we are being fair to other tenants who are paying open

“I have personally offered to meet with them to discuss the situation and try to find a way forward that meets both our needs, but at a time when the council's funding from government is

being cut by £47m we are simply unable to continue to subsidise their rent.”

The council is now asking the library for an annual market rent of £18,000 along with its £12,000 annual service

charge. As a gesture of goodwill, they have extended the deadline for the library to make a decision until the end of April. The library were planning to stage a demonstration and deliver the petition to the council’s Tooley Street

headquarters as the News went to press on February 24.

Dr Laura Schwartz, Associate Professor of Modern British History, University of Warwick, has said: “The Feminist Library is a wonderful cultural resource that needs to be defended at all costs. The library is now the only archive in London where a wide array of feminist publications are truly accessible to the general public and available on the open shelves. It also provides one of the few spaces in central London where women and feminist activists can come together to meet and organise for a better world.

“If the Feminist Library is evicted from its current premises, Southwark Council will not only be guilty of cultural vandalism but also of silencing women.”

Cllr David Noakes, Lib Dem Councillor for Cathedrals, has met with the library several times in the last few weeks. He said: “This is a hugely important archive resource and meeting place for feminists and other women's groups and that we strongly support their future being secured at either the current site, at a genuinely affordable rent or at another location with the agreement of the Feminist Library.”

HAMLET’S NEW HOME? CGIs of how the new ground, including planned homes, may look

155 homes and 3G pitch planned EXCLUSIVE

DULWICH HAMLET fans will get a first glimpse at their proposed new stadium at a series of exhibitions this week - which boasts an unusual 3G pitch.

The plan also includes the construction of 155 new homes, including an as-ofyet unspecified amount of affordable housing, along with a community gym and ‘multi-use games area.’

The homes will be built on the site of the current stadium, which was constructed in 1992. The proposed new stadium will be located slightly to the west of the current ground on a training

pitch bordering, though not impeding on, the Greendale Fields.

A ‘linear park’ is also being proposed, which would create a green path from the stadium to East Dulwich Stadium.

The under-used Greendale Fields will also be revitalised as part of the project, with Southwark Council and the club’s owners Hadley Property Group working together to reclaim the site.

Paths, picnic areas, play zones, meadows, woodlands and a pond will be created or restored, according to the council’s latest proposals outlined in its planning documents.

Matt Rimmer, from Hadley Property Group, said: “Dulwich Hamlet has been at Champion Hill for over a century. We are committed to securing a sustainable base for DHFC, to ensure that the club

can remain at Champion Hill for the next 100 years and beyond.

“These proposals will not just deliver a new stadium that will secure the future of the club at Champion Hill and allow it the chance to further progress up through the divisions, but will also help to continue the great work that the club already does in the community.

“The new 3G surface will mean the club’s youth team and ASPIRE Academy can train on the pitch. The new Multi-Use Games Area, gym and public park will be available for the whole community to use.”

The public exhibitions will be held on February 25 from 4pm to 8pm and on Saturday 27 February from 11am to 2pm at the club’s Champion Hill ground.

Peckham group win £23k to make play park safer PECKHAM

A CAMPAIGN by a Peckham community group has secured £23,000 to make Kelly Avenue Park a safer place for families.

The Peckham Citizens group had spent a year surveying 1,000 residents to find out how the council could make a meaning improvement to Peckham.

The money will pay for a new pathway through the park and two new archways at its entrances, designed by children from two local schools.

The News reported last September how 120 local people worked together to clean up the park after hearing shocking stories of violence, sexual assaults, drug dealing, and gang activity.

Rose Moses, assistant Head teacher at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School, one of the schools that led the campaign, said: “We are delighted with the result – Southwark Council has really listened to the concerns of hundreds of local people.

“The children and parents involved will remember this day for years to come and now know that if they put their mind to it, they can achieve great things together.”

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure, said: “If a park doesn’t feel safe for children, then it’s our duty to do something about it. I am glad to say we have found the money. We very much look forward to working with Peckham Citizens, local children and residents to make Kelly Avenue Park a fun and safe place for all to enjoy!”

Asbestos closes pool for weeks

ASBESTOS DUST has been found at Seven Islands Leisure Centre during a routine survey.

The centre’s swimming and shower facilities will now be closed until March 9 while the problem is rectified. The toxic dust is isolated and customers are at no risk, according to Southwark Council.

The deadly substance was discovered during an inspection held in advance of more widescale improvements works planned to begin in May. Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member public health, parks and leisure said: “It is important to deal with this asbestos quickly and efficiently, and while I understand a short notice closure of the pool is inconvenient for users, for the works required it is unfortunately unavoidable.

“I hope users will take advantage of our Camberwell or Peckham centres in the meantime, and when the main improvements works begin in May, they’ll be able to use the brand new facilities at The Castle while their local centre is being improved.”

Man ‘threatened to set himself on fire’ PECKHAM: Fire, ambulance, and police services were called on Sunday morning as a man allegedly threatened to set himself on fire outside the KFC in Old Kent Road.

A 37-year-old man was arrested shortly after 11.20am on suspicion of causing criminal damage and for public disorder.

The police were called by London Ambulance, who arrived at 11.03.

Raffle fundraiser for St Peter’s

WALWORTH: Gaelic dancing and the raffle prize of a tour to the House of Commons will be on the table at a fundraiser hosted by St Peter’s Church in Walworth.

Residents want facility built on Seven Islands site

GREEN CAMPAIGNERS have urged Rotherhithe residents to vote against Southwark Council’s proposed location for a new leisure centre, after public consultation opened this month.

The Canada Water West Resident Action Group have slammed the council’s preferred site in a “green haven” as an “afterthought location.”

A spokesperson said: “It is not just a question of preserving the trees and wildlife. The site the council wants to build on is in an out-of-theway position, much less accessible than the current Seven Islands

leisure centre site, which is served by seven bus routes and has a long tradition of being used for swimming and other leisure activities.

“The community deserves a better leisure centre than the one envisaged for this afterthought location.”

They are urging residents to fill in an online questionnaire and urge the council to rebuild the Seven Islands Leisure Centre rather than building a new centre at ‘Plot 6’, the wildlife area at the western edge of the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park.

Liberal Democrat councillor Lisa Rajan called on the council to “listen to the community – not just impose their favoured plan they have cooked up with developers.”

She added: “It is a nature site, it overlooks existing homes and would be partially above the railway line.

There are other possible sites and I am glad that Liberal Democrat

councillors were able to call in the leisure centre plans [to the council’s Overview & Scrutiny Committee] and force the council to carry out a fuller consultation.”

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark Cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said the council had already listened to residents and looked at alternate sites for the new centre – including rebuilding the current facility. He added: “We have included the pros and cons of each in the public consultation that’s currently underway. It is possible to fit a new leisure centre on the Seven Islands site but this would mean no provision in the area for at least three years.

“We want to hear what our residents think, and we are awaiting the results from the public consultation before making a final decision on the location.”

that over 2,000 residents have already taken the time to come and take part in our February consultation and share their views and ideas on the proposals so far. We will be reviewing all the feedback received, which will be used to help inform the further development of the masterplan proposals.

Police failed to stop ‘Ronnie’s murder

THE SHOOTING over four years ago of a young man who was grieving at his school friend’s funeral should have been prevented by the Metropolitan Police, a jury has said.

Azezur Khan, better known as Ronnie, was fatally shot in his stomach on November 3 2011, after leaving the graveside of Joel Morgan at Camberwell Old Cemetery.

Mr Morgan’s mother had asked the police to attend the funeral, as she feared violence from rival gangs.

At an inquest which concluded on Tuesday, the jury gave a verdict that police’s failure to attend contributed to 21-year-old Ronnie’s murder, which could have been avoided.

The cemetery was located within territory controlled by the Peckham Young Guns and the Peckham Boys – both rivals of the GAS gang Mr Morgan from Lambeth was a member of.

Ronnie was not a gang member, but became a bystander in a dispute that

erupted as he left the cemetery to get a drink with his friends. His killer’s identity remains unknown to the police, despite ten arrests.

Returning a narrative verdict, a jury spokesman said police had failed to recognise “a visible police presence” may have deterred gang members.

“You don't need a named perpetrator and named victim for there to be a threat to life,” the spokesman said.

“Communication errors were prevalent within the Met Police Service. There was a lack of information, a dilution of information, a failure to flag up different boroughs, a failure to record verbal information and appropriate assignments for tasking.”

Coroner Andrew Harris said he could not find systemic failings in the Metropolitan Police's intelligence gathering systems, but questioned its policy on threat to life.

He said: “It's quite clear that the culture in Lambeth showed that an individual, or a group of individuals, needed to get this protection. I've not heard any assurance during this inquest that the culture is now any different.

“I'm not clear that we can be confident that the Met Police has addressed this policy, and that is a considerable concern.

“This issue went through a series of meetings among officers, and at no point did these officers believe that there was a threat to life. That is a systemic issue.”

Speaking after the inquest, Ronnie’s sister, Shibli Khan, said: “The jury has found my brother was an entirely innocent bystander and the Metropolitan Police failed to protect his life. We want the police to publicly apologise for failing to protect my brother and to prove that they have learned lessons. We don’t want another family to go through what we have gone through.”

The Met Police gave a statement offering their “deepest sympathies” to Ronnie’s family and friends.

It said: “Since Mr Khan’s murder there has been considerable change in the way the Met deals with intelligence. We are confident that we are now better equipped to deal with a scenario such as this one.”

‘Place of Safety’ planned for people suffering mental health crises

PLANS TO create ‘places of safety’ for people suffering mental health crises have been put forward, after it was revealed that some patients have been kept in cells, police cars and ambulances.

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) has presented proposals to Southwark Council for a 24/7 Central Place of Safety to cover Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Croydon.

Their plans included an admission that patients had to be sectioned on 40 occasions between January and

August last year, with patients being kept in cells, police cars and ambulances.

Councillors viewed the Trust’s proposals during a Healthy Communities Scrutiny SubCommittee meeting on February 10.

Setting up the Central Place of Safety would cost an extra £800,000 a year, but create capacity to assess up to six people at once, and cater for people of all ages and levels of distress. The trust currently has capacity for just one person suffering from a mental health crisis in each of its hospitals.

Tom White, of Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG),

said: “What Slam have written to the committee is [that it is] their proposal to end all detentions under section 136 in police custody of the mental health act.

“We are glad that the Trust has finally come around to this. We have been campaigning to raise awareness of these problems for yonks.

“What is really disturbing is that about a quarter of the UK’s suicide victims will have seen a health professional in the week before they died.”

These criticisms follow a commitment by all London mental health trusts and the Metropolitan Police to end all detentions under

section 136 in police custody.

A spokesperson for the Trust told the News: “The current provision is inadequate and the Trust has had difficulty keeping the suites open at all times, largely due to staffing as staff are drawn from other wards on the site to assist the suites.

“The Trust is engaging with the local patient and voluntary groups, the police, local authorities, commissioners and other stakeholders on these proposals.

“Our assessment is that these changes will mark a significant improvement to the current provision and improve patients’ experience.”

‘Mystery noise is driving me crazy’

A BERMONDSEY man claims he is being driven “crazy” by a mysterious noise in his house, which has stopped him enjoying a good night’s sleep for over a year.

The strange sound, which comes from beneath Alfred Johnson’s kitchen and echoes throughout the pipes in his house, varies from a constant “boiler room” sound to irregular, metallic tapping.

Mr Johnson told the News: “It is loud now [during the day] but three times worse at night. The noise travels through the pipes, so it is in every room. It is so bad that I have had to travel to my friend’s house in Chiswick to sleep.”

He said he had pleaded with Thames Water for months to investigate the sound, but had been told it was not an emergency.

He said: “It is not right, there must be a law against it. If you cannot feel comfortable in your home then it is not a home. It feels more like a boiler room.”

While he said that his first priority was getting some shut eye, he also believed he should be compensated for the disruption the constant noise had caused.

“I’ve been through hell. I think I should be compensated for all of this.

Someone should be responsible.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone,

Southwark Council cabinet member for housing, said that the situation was “completely unacceptable.”

He said: “Officers have been contacting Thames Water on Mr Johnson’s behalf for the past few weeks and a visit was made on 17th February. A return visit by Thames Water is due this week – if the problem is not resolved after this, we will reassess the situation.

“We are more than happy to work with Thames Water and allow access for any works to fix the issue permanently. We will continue to be as supportive and helpful to Mr

Johnson as we can be - I sincerely hope this matter is resolved very soon.”

A spokesperson for Thames Water denied responsibility for the pipes, but said they would fix them as a “gesture of goodwill.”

They said: “The leak is on a privately owned pipe which, as it’s inside the property boundary, isn’t our responsibility; however we have offered to repair it for free as a gesture of goodwill. We’re sorry we’ve not fixed it sooner and will make it a priority to do the work as soon as we possibly can.”

A WEEK after Millwall dodged a controversial compulsory purchase order bid by Lewisham Council, the News can reveal the club’s very own plans for the area.

Both the council and developers Renewal, who have spent twelve years purchasing land surrounding in north Lewisham in order to create a 2,400home development, had accused the club of failing to send any “detailed proposals” for the area’s regeneration scheme.

However, the club has now supplied the News with their concrete plans for the area directly surrounding the stadium, with proposals for housing and community schemes.

Millwall submitted these plans to the council in August 2013, even promising to beat the proportion of affordable housing offered in Renewal’s scheme.

The club also have plans for Millwall Community Trust offices, the Millwall Café, the Lions Centre and “workshops for local artists and other facilities” surrounding the Den. However, these £140m plans were not considered by Lewisham Council, who said they had not received a “planning application” or “detailed proposals”.

The report published prior to last week’s aborted CPO vote, which threatened land housing the club’s car park and the community Lions Centre, added: “Nor (despite being advised to do so) have they provided a business case and funding strategy which demonstrates how any such proposals can be carried out in a manner which fits in with and does not prejudice the wider Scheme, including from a viability perspective.”

The vote was postponed at the eleventh hour on February 17 after Millwall fans delivered a ‘Defend Our Den’ petition signed by 15,000 people and when, crucially, Lewisham were alerted to “circumstances of a person potentially affected.”

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council told the News on Tuesday night that they remained “absolutely committed” to the club.

They said: “That’s why the council secured legally-binding commitments that the development should include recladding of the Millwall stadium, the ability to increase crowd capacity should Millwall FC secure promotion to the Premier League, relocation of the community scheme within a new sports centre and improved transport connections for fans travelling to the stadium.

“We have been keen to ensure that the whole area of which Millwall stadium is part is regenerated in a comprehensive manner that enhances the whole community and provides lasting benefits to the area. We are now using this window of opportunity to see if there is anything more that can be done to get agreement between Millwall FC and the developer, Renewal.”

Renewal, however, were less impressed by the last-minute decision to reschedule the vote. Director Mark Taylor said: “We are disappointed that it has been necessary to postpone the decision regarding the compulsory purchase order. “Renewal has spent

The CPO process is an important step forward in the delivery of the New Bermondsey scheme and we look forward to the Council making a decision in due course.”

‘There have been no negotiations’ says artist behind last minute deferral EXCLUSIVE

The News can reveal the Lewisham residents behind the decision to postpone the controversial CPO affecting Millwall’s stadium.

A legal letter to Lewisham Council from Willow Winston, a resident at Excelsior Works in Rollins Street, and three tenants at Bolina Industrial Estate in Bolina Road, halted the proposed land seize vote at Lewisham Town Hall at the eleventh hour on February 17.

Willow, an artist who works and lives at her home, told the News: “It’s been an enormous strain this whole thing, I must tell you.

“There have been no negotiations with residents from Renewal.

“They have no concern for the nature of what they are pulling down.”

The legal letter, which was delivered to the council just minutes before its cabinet meeting last week, echoed these concerns.

It read: “In the case of [consulting with] our client, these attempts have been lacklustre at best and there have been no genuine efforts to engage our clients in any meaningful discussion.”

It added that Renewal had only recognised one person living in the CPO district, seemingly oblivious to Willow’s existence on the site.

The letter said: “This illustrates the lack of concern over the needs over the needs of individuals.”

It added concerns that Renewal, rather than build on seized land themselves, would sell on the land purely in order to make a profit.

Lewisham Council chose not to respond to the letter directly when contacted by the News, but did point to a message on their ‘New Bermondsey’ development website which reads: “After taking twelve years to buy the land, piece by piece, Renewal has no intention of selling this land.

“It will work with specialist house builders to ensure that the development is delivered according to the Master Plan and Renewal’s specification.”

AFTER WEEKS of voting, dozens of tattoos submitted and over 350 votes, we have FINALLY found a winner for our Millwall tattoo competition: congratulations Billy May!

The 27-year-old’s huge back tattoo, featuring the Millwall lion and the motto ‘we fear no foe’, clearly impressed our readers as he saw off tough competition (including his dad!) to win the title.

It certainly was a close finish, with Neil Sweetman’s tat only losing out by less than two per cent of the vote – heartbreak for the runner-up but delight by Billy, who will now enjoy a matchday experience at the Den, courtesy of the News.

He said: “That’s pucker mate! I was struggling with energy this week but that should see me through! There’s been a bit of banter in the house with my dad, so it’s great to win.

“The tattoo took a good few hours, a few painful hours to do! I went to the tattoo shop with my dad when he got his and thought I would get one too. It was great to see us both side by side in the paper last week. He was the one who first took me and I’ve been travelling up from Kent for every home game since we left Peckham in 2000. ROTHERHITHE RESIDENTS have urged Southwark Council to consider the local community when making their final decision on the future of the Lavender Pond Pumphouse.

Several proposals, including one for a controversial 350-seat theatre and others for a boat repair yard and an art gallery, have been submitted to the council for their consideration on the future of the docking icon.

Kirsty Burton, of the Pumphouse Revival group, told the News: “I don’t necessarily have strong opinions on the theatre because we are going to scrutinise any business along the same issues of heritage,

ecology and transport.

“There’s a lot of passion for the area. It’s amazing – so many people have stories, people have lived here for years, since childhood. We’re thinking forward, not back – but we need the right proposal, not just any.”

The community group highlighted ‘three pillars’ of concerns for future developments at the site: preservation of heritage, ecological protection at the beautiful Lavender Pond Nature Reserve and upholding the integrity of the local infrastructure, including traffic.

Resident Tim Donovan, echoing the views of a number of residents, said that people living in the area deserved better than to have a busy theatre suddenly dropped into their

community. He said: “People have worked hard all of their lives to live in a nice quiet area. You’ll have people leaving the theatre at whatever time it closes, hanging about, chatting and saying goodbye.”

Other residents have voiced their concerns about the impact regular theatre shows watched by hundreds of people would have on the area, especially given the poor public transport in the peninsula.

Other residents, however, favoured the proposal for a theatre.

welcome the addition of a theatre to my road, and I believe that the Pumphouse is ideally suited for such a venue.

“I often go to the theatre in London, and I know that theatre patrons are quiet, respectful and bring a wealth of culture to the community. I would be keen to attend the theatre myself, something which I cannot currently do in Rotherhithe.”

Residents argued that, whatever the proposal, the council and the developers must consider the local community first.

Rotherhithe councillor Kath Whittam, whose home overlooks the Pumphouse, said: “No matter which proposal is approved, it will have to go through planning where these issues will be addressed.

“As a councillor I am very concerned. The council does not have money to renovate the Pumphouse itself. We are looking for someone to sign a long-term lease, of 25 or 99 or 999 years. Somebody will have to have large pockets and want to be in there for the long term.”

Junior doctors plan three 48 hour strikes

JUNIOR DOCTORS are again planning to strike on three separate occasions, each for 48 hours, during March and April.

The British Medical Association, which represents junior doctors, has also said it will launch a judicial review into the government’s revamp of their contracts.

The changes could see the ‘weekend hours’ status lifted from contracts, as well as sanctions for NHS Trusts that overwork their staff.

The first strike, which includes staff at King’s College, Maudsley and Guy’s St Thomas’ hospitals, will take place from 8am, Wednesday March 9, to 8am, Friday March 11.

The second will be from 8am Wednesday, April 6, to 8am, Friday, April 8. The third planned strike will last from

A vote among junior doctors in England on whether to hold the walk-outs saw 98 per cent vote in favour.

Emergency care will still be provided at each hospital, and more than 43 per cent of the country’s junior doctors worked during the last round of strikes.

Dr Johann Malawana, BMA junior doctor committee chair, said: “In recent weeks I have heard from thousands of junior doctors across the country, and the resounding message is that they cannot and will not accept what the Government is trying to do.”

The BMA legal challenge follows news that the government failed to carry out Equality Impact Assessments before trying to impose the new contracts.

The government’s plans to impose the contracts, if successful, will take effect from August.

Founder of Peckham BMX Club collects MBE from Prince Charles - then returns to track to celebrates with youngsters

THE FOUNDER of Peckham BMX Club was given a royal welcome at Buckingham Palace to collect his MBE on Friday.

Michael Pusey, 42, also known as CK Flash, said it was the “best day of his life” when he was awarded the honour for his services to south London’s young people.

He was recognised for his thirteen years running the Peckham BMX Club in Burgess Park, which has nine local youngsters pedalling to represent Britain

in this summer’s Olympic Games.

Although used to DJing to huge crowds, the thought of stepping forth to shake hands with Prince Charles still made him feel understandably “anxious”.

“It was a beautiful day being there with my parents and my brothers and taking photos with them,” Michael said.

“Then I went to the track afterwards and celebrated with the kids and it was great to really show everyone at the club – if you really believe in something and work hard you will be rewarded.

“I have to admit I was anxious in front of about 1,500 people at the ceremony but it

was one of the best days of my life and it was really inspiring to be there.”

Michael was also glad to celebrate the day with his mum, who he has been looking after at her home in Jamaica following a leg injury.

After the ceremony came the after-party, which continued until 1am. But Saturday was also a day to remember as the track in

Burgess Park hosted a floodlit celebration race with 180 young BMXers.

“I have big plans for the club. I would love it to become a British centre for BMXing in Peckham. All of a sudden people are going to take notice of the club and recognise us,” Michael said.

“The kids here are world level and when you think where we came from to where

we are now it’s an amazing achievement.”

The former Choice FM DJ has also worked on music projects with Dizzee Rascal and So Solid Crew, and still DJs at world-renowned clubs such as Pacha in Ibiza. His involvement in youth projects around south London began after fans of his show contacted him asking if he could help create a positive influence on the area’s young people, and the club was founded in 2003.

Police urge other potential victims to come forward

POLICE HAVE urged potential victims of a trainee vicar from Peckham convicted of raping two teenagers to help them with their investigations.

Timothy Storey, 36, of Peckham Grove was convicted last Friday for three counts of rape and one of assault by penetration, all between 2008 and 2009.

Both the women were church goers who attended summer camps and congregations led by Storey, who studied theology at Oxford University.

Storey befriended the women since they began attending his services as children, later sending them messages of a sexual nature through social media and texting.

Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, is now urging any other victims of Storey to “come forward” and tell the police what has happened to them.

“Storey thought he had got away with it, but the victims in this case were determined to see him brought to justice,” Mr Hill said.

from a very young age. In his position as a youth leader he manipulated the victims and forced them to engage in sexual acts that they did not want to do.”

Last week’s conviction came after Storey had already been found guilty in May 2014 of several offences where he groomed women between the ages of ten to sixteen and encouraged them to perform sexual acts. The two teenaged women linked to this new revelation about Storey also came forward to police after news had spread about this previous conviction.

Storey was remanded to be sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on April 15.

Holly, 13, wins Irish dancing championship despite suffering painful foot condition

A THIRTEEN-year-old Dulwich girl with a painful bone disorder in her feet has beaten the odds to win her first Irish dancing championship.

Holly Vass, who only began dancing two years ago, suffers from Sever’s Disease, a short-term condition which causes heel pain in growing children.

She said that winning the championship made all the sacrifices and pain in her four training sessions a week worthwhile.

She told the News: “When I first started Irish dancing winning a championship felt as impossible as

walking to the moon. When they called my number as the winner I felt like time stopped. I was in shock for days.“It has made all the parties I couldn't go to, all the weekends with friends I've missed out on, and all the bruises my feet, hips and knuckles have endured, worth it. It's hard to keep up with school as dance takes up most of my time, but I know I want to be a professional dancer in the future, so it's worth the sacrifice.”

Despite much discomfort, Holly has surprised teacher Sarah Hopkins, of the Hopkins Academy of Irish Dance, by training for up to twelve hours a week.

Sixteen pupils from the Elephant and Castle school voiced their lyrical talents at the poetry slam last week, which was centred on the subject of power.

The winning team included: Zareen Roy-Macauley, Aneesha Hussain, Tasnima Ahmed, Halil Es, Joshua

Adeyemi, Naomi Oloukun and Sharon Machisa.

They will travel together to the Brave New Voices event in Washington in July, to compete against other schools’ poetry teams from across America.

Joshua said: “I’m overwhelmed. I have literally dreamt about this. I will be the first person in my family to ever travel to America.

“I feel a responsibility now to encourage other young men like me to use poetry as a positive and productive way to express our emotions and views about the world.”

AN IMAM and his family of nine have been evicted from their flat after Southwark Council decided they were not entitled to live there.

Faysal Abdirahman, 46, who is the imam of the Camberwell Islamic Centre, had lived in the threebedroom flat in Benhill Road, Camberwell, with his wife and seven children since June 2014.

The family were given the house to stay in after they were left homeless from being in rent arrears with a private landlord.

Faysal’s wife Fardowsa Jama, 39, opened the door on February 11 to find bailiffs and police ordering them to leave.

“It was very scary,” Fardowsa said.

“They banged on our door and windows. I felt very shocked and

scared and it frightened the children.”

The couple claim they had no warning before the bailiffs arrived and didn’t even have time to pack up their belongings. But Southwark Council say they sent warning letters before the eviction.

The council say they were entitled to kick the family out because they “intentionally” made themselves homeless when they lost their first flat in June 2014.

“Telling anybody to leave our temporary accommodation, especially those with children, is always a difficult decision for the council and is always the absolute last resort,” Cllr Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for housing.

“However, the fact remains that in this case the family had built up rent arrears with their previous landlord

and as a result we are legally required to consider them intentionally homeless and so are not under any obligation to provide them with housing.

“The family appealed the decision but it was upheld after review and sadly they have now exhausted all the legal options open to them.”

BUSINESSES AT Peckham Rye Station’s arcades are nervous about the outcome of a council meeting that could seal their fate.

Southwark councillors on the authority’s planning committee will vote on Tuesday whether to give planning permission for the arcades to be razed and replaced with an outdoor square.

Designs submitted by the council with Landholt and Brown Architects incorporate shop spaces in the arches overlook the square, and large metal planters to support Platform Three.

The application also includes a twostorey extension to the building at 2-10 Blenheim Grove to provide spaces for a restaurant, office spaces, a takeaway, and public toilets.

But it means Peckham stands to lose its TSB bank, Jenny’s Café and several independent traders in arcade if the green light is given.

“The council hasn’t spoken to us about it since last year, but I told them it would mean we have to relocate and that would kill our business.

“The problem is I don’t see anywhere

nearby that we could move to where our customers could still find us. I’m worried by it and I don’t see why they need to change everything around.”

The issue of locals being left in the dark, despite the council promise in 2014 for a ‘co-design’ planning process, has angered Peckham Vision campaigner, Eileen Conn, who helped spearhead the campaign for the station’s revamp.

“The handling of this process has flown completely in the face of what was meant to be a collaborative process, and has been utterly un-transparent” Eileen said.

“There are 96 documents and there is no guidance as to where key info can be found in them. Then further amended documents were posted late in the second consultation period and without notice.

SOUTHWARK LIB Dems have called for an independent investigation into how an elderly Camberwell resident was left dead in his bath for weeks over the festive period – despite the council being informed of a foul smell nearly one month before he was found.

The News revealed that council officers had visited the home of Kingsley Idahosa on December 3 and 4 but had decided not to enter, before worried friends finally called police who forced entry and made the grim discovery.

However, the council’s housing boss Richard Livingstone said at the time that he was satisfied “the right steps were taken to locate Mr Idahosa as soon as concerns were raised” – sparking anger from opposition councillors.

Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Adult Care, said: “The council now needs to reassure residents that it acted correctly and explain why it took over a month for the police to intervene after neighbours reported the tenant missing last month. Given the gravity of this case and its particular features - the piles of accumulated mail for instance gave a clear indication that something was

wrong - an internal review is inappropriate and inadequate.

Something is very clearly wrong if a council tenant can be left dead in their own home for so long, especially when neighbours were concerned and visits were made by housing officers.”

Councillor Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said he would look to “ensure that lessons are learned” but said that tenants’ privacy “must be respected.” He said: “I have asked the Chief Executive and Strategic Director for Housing to review our policies and procedures in fine detail, to see whether there is anything more the council could do to quickly discover that people have died when they do not have regular contact from friends, neighbours or family.

“Tenants all receive tenancy checks at regular intervals, we closely monitor rent and financial activity and flag up any issues where people are vulnerable or require help – in which case we work with the relevant services to support them. Of our 55,000 tenancies and homeowners, we do have large numbers of people who do not make a lot of contact with the council themselves and tenants’ privacy also must be respected as much as possible.

“It is extremely sad when people die alone and I will always look to ensure that lessons are learned from cases such as the sad death of Mr Idahosa.”

DBS delays stop work

VER 1.6 million people across the country are unemployed and looking for work and in Camberwell and Peckham there are an above average proportion of people (3.9%) claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance and Universal Credit.

The last thing anyone expects when they are offered a job is for that offer to be put at risk by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Not because they are criminals and have done something wrong, but because of the DBS missing self-set targets on timeliness which leave applicants unable to take up their jobs, get paid and putting them under financial strain.

The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) was established by the Labour Government in 1997 and supported the police in providing checks on applications for jobs that work with children, young people and vulnerable adults and ultimately deciding whether or not a person was suitable for that job. In 2012, the Coalition Government merged the CRB with the Independent Safeguarding Authority to create the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). It is vital that these checks are carried out thoroughly so that vulnerable people are properly protected. However, it is not right that people are facing financial hardship when they have done nothing wrong.

Between April and December 2015, the DBS only met their target, of 95% of disclosures to be issued in eight weeks, four times.

I have been contacted by many local people experiencing long waits for checks for all sorts of jobs; from chauffeurs to doctors. A number of residents in Camberwell and Peckham have lost income and are worried about how to pay their rent and other bills because of these delays. One of my constituents told me about how she had to use her savings to pay for essential bills and even had to claim Jobseeker’s Allowance as she couldn’t take up the position that had been offered to her until her DBS application was complete.

I’ve asked the Home Secretary how many DBS applications from Camberwell and Peckham had taken more than 60 days to process in the last twelve months. Between February 2015 and January 2016, 2,371 applications for Camberwell and Peckham residents took longer than sixty days and the delays only seem to be getting worse.

Mock funeral was in bad taste

I WRITE as a veteran ecocampaigner and one of the usual suspects when it comes to orchestrating a rowdy public gallery at council meetings.

Even I, however, raise an eyebrow at Save Southwark Woods (SSW) mock funeral, complete with Grim Reaper, in a real cemetery – a place where the bereaved and traumatised have every right to remember their loved ones in quiet and dignity.

Most of those who took part were doubtless genuine in their belief that Southwark is poised to fell ten acres of beautiful woodland, a claim which has attracted much support from public and celebrities.

But, is this claim true? It's easy to believe that Southwark is lying after its appalling mishandling of public consultation. However, Southwark's real plan (which does need to be re-thought) is a haveits-cake-and eat-it-too scheme to continue burials under the tree canopy, with opening of paths and glades – burials with biodiversity.

Readers should contact Southwark themselves and demand copies of these plans.

Some worrying inaccuracies have been flagged up, but not clear felling.

SSW is as much a promotion for its leaders as a green campaign.

Shouting and meeting disruption are its tools for preventing rational debate, as I discovered when I invited one of the leaders of SSW to speak at Southwark's June 6, 2015 conference for friends of green space. I ended my own presentation by asking Southwark to change its plans. The SSW invitee, then demolished all support with behaviour that eye witnesses described as “abusive,” “aggressive and scary.” He demanded to know if the meeting's chair was standing because he wanted to hit him. Nobody had

News page 3 made a move to do so, but this could have sounded otherwise on an audio recording.

If we are to deflect Southwark's plans we need to address the facts behind the smoke-screen and hyperbole.

On the other hand, I have enormous sympathy with the many thousands of residents who love their local woodlands and who have, encouraged by SSW, expressed deep concerns about Southwark's inroads into them.

Locals’ views not heard in Rotherhithe

THANK YOU to all the Rotherhithe residents who have been in touch with Liberal Democrat Councillors about the developments around Canada Water.

While we all support new homes and jobs, the Liberal Democrats have always argued that development must be done 'with' local residents, and not 'to' them.

The Lib Dems recently won a cross party investigation into why the location of the new Canada Water leisure centre seems to be being chosen by developers and not the community. And we have argued that the new Southwark Plan should not allow tall buildings everywhere, unless the community is supportive and the buildings are delivering genuinely affordable homes.

The over-riding concern which our council group and local residents have, is that these decisions are not being made as a result of what local people say. People are told they are being consulted, but they don't feel like their views are being heard or are changing any plans. That is why Liberal Democrat Councillors across the borough, from Surrey Docks to Bankside to Dulwich, continue to fight the corner of local

residents.

Fight flogging off council housing

YOU ARE absolutely right when your editorial condemns the government’s plans to ‘flog off our council housing stock or make it unaffordable for hard working families’ (Southwark News 4 February 2016).

But it is not too late to get the government to think again.

Opposition to their outrageous Housing and Planning Bill is developing across the country and receiving lots of media attention.

Your readers can sign the petition to demand the government scrap the Bill and 1. Stop forcing councils to sell much needed social homes 2. Drop plans to charge higher rent to households with incomes over £40k in London 3. Retain secure tenancies rather than making all future council tenancies last no more than five years 4. Scrap moves to make it easier to evict private renters, reintroduce rent controls and 5. Get planting those trees EBRUARY BROUGHT a rise in temperatures (after a brief cold snap in late January) and torrential rain and gale force winds returned.

This has been the general pattern of weather for most of the winter months in London, and it does not look likely to change.

Clumps of fragile Snowdrops are now beginning to make their late appearance alongside the delicate blue grape hyacinths, a contrast to the yellow flowers of winter jasmine, Witch hazel and the dwarf narcissi. The evergreen Camellia (pictured) with its deep green shiny leaves and wonderful soft pink or white blooms has come in to flower weeks early. Magnolia stellata, which usually flowers in March, was out at the beginning of February, its delicate white petals are falling quickly or being damaged in the blustery cold winds.

Soil remains water-logged, but if conditions allow, planting can be carried out during February and March. There is still time to order trees and shrubs from the catalogues or online, to complete planting by the end of March, although there may be less choice available as the year progresses. If you are considering planting fruit trees and would like to try something more unusual ‘Little Pax’ is a late dessert apple, newly introduced (2014) from St Cecilia’s Abbey on the Isle of Wight. It produces tasty red and crunchy fruits which store well. Little Pax will need a companion for pollination such as Discovery, Cox or Bramley. Look for M9 dwarfing root stock (height 6-10 feet) which is suitable for large containers and smaller gardens. The Beauty Berry or Callicarpa can be trimmed to reduce its size, but don’t cut into or remove the old wood – just take off some of last year’s growth which is easy to identify.

Gurley in the print room

Back at Anise Gallery for her third solo exhibition, What Happens in the Print Room turns its attention to the process of the screenprint, the methodology that lies beneath its printed surface.

Popularised in the 1960s by Andy Warhol, screenprinting is meticulous, time intensive and its results uncertain. It is these nuances that Gurley aims to highlight through this exhibition and her distinctive style that lies somewhere between street art, expressionism and pop art.

Familiar objects and landscapes form her subject matter. The viewer can immediately connect with the piece allowing the finer details of process and composition to become the focus.

BRINGING ADA OFF THE SIDE-LINES

ON THE 150th year of her birth, a new book is attempting to bring Ada Salter “in off the side-lines” of the history pages and give her the attention and respect she deserves, writes Joey Millar...

Historian Graham Taylor’s new book, ‘Ada Salter: Pioneer of Ethical Socialism’, portrays the revolutionary politician, environmentalist and social reformer as she should be: not as the wife of famed doctor and MP Alfred Salter, but as an exceptional figure in her own right.

He told the News: “I wrote the book because she had been neglected – lots of famous women are neglected by history. When researching this book I found that in fact, she was as significant if not more significant than Alfred.”

Her life was certainly varied as she powered through numerous movements during the late 19th and early 20th century. Born in Northamptonshire, it was not until she moved to Bermondsey at the age of 31 that she really made a name for herself.

She worked at the Bermondsey Settlement, where Taylor said she was “very successful with the roughest and the toughest of the girls.” He said: “Bermondsey was one big slum, with whole families living in entire rooms and one tap for 20 houses. Nine baby bodies were found in one block. But she treated the girls as equals, which worked very well for her. She used her Quaker belief and said: ‘There is something of God in everybody.’”

She moved into politics and was quickly successful, becoming the first women councillor to be elected in Bermondsey in 1909.

However, tragedy struck the following year when her eightyear-old daughter Joyce died of scarlet fever.

Taylor said: “Joyce died during a scarlet fever epidemic in the slums. Ada always insisted on living in the slums, against Alfred’s wishes, but she couldn’t be persuaded otherwise.”

This tragedy appeared to spur her on, for within a year she had led one of the most famous women’s rights protests in the 20th century.

Ada, having then co-founded the Women’s Labour League, helped rally 14,000 women as they went on strike in the borough.

The women marched through Bermondsey chanting slogans, leaving 21 factories near empty – eighteen of which would subsequently introduce pay rises.

Taylor said: “Bermondsey was totally paralysed. It was quite usual for someone to lose their fingers in a machine or have their face shredded by exploding glass.”

After the mock military action of the protests, Ada, a devout Quaker, threw herself into pacifist campaigning during a very real war. When WW1 broke out, she founded the Women’s

International League for Peace and Freedom and in 1915 went toe-to-toe with Lenin at a Women’s Conference.

Taylor said: “Lenin’s wife and mistress were both there and had been programmed to support conflict. Ada was pacifist and stuck to her guns.”

After the war, Ada achieved another first when she was elected Mayor of Bermondsey in 1920, becoming the first woman mayor in the capital. It was at this time that she began her ‘beautification’ campaign, the results of which can still be seen in the borough today.

Taylor said: “She planted 7,000 trees and covered the whole of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe in

flowers.

“Every open space she filled with playgrounds, with art and with music. Bermondsey was transformed from one of the drabbest, dreariest parts in London to a place where people came to visit.”

Some of these places still remain today, including playgrounds in Tanner Street Park and Druid Street. What has proved less permanent, however, is the respect Ada Salter so clearly deserved.

Graham Taylor’s book goes some way in repairing this injustice.

s I enter Black & Blue on a busy Tuesday evening, a gentle rumble fills my ears, writes Ellie Ross...

It starts quietly, then crescendos, reverberating around me but dropping away again before becoming too loud, gone as quickly as it arrived.

That rumble wasn’t my hungry belly crying out for food (although, walking into a restaurant that specialises in steaks, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it was).

Here, you hear trains roll past, heading to and from London Bridge station, a mere stone’s throw away.

Set inside old Victorian railway arches, Black & Blue makes much of this railway connection.

The exposed brick walls feature numerous tunnels, while tables are set in perfectly straight lines through the room, like passenger carriages.

In fact, if it wasn’t for a giant plastic cow looking down on me from a raised mezzanine, I’d actually feel almost like I was on a train.

But it would be a pretty good one.

Seats are leather, tables are candlelit and service is top notch. It feels like an oldschool, first class compartment.

My friend Emily and I have only just sat at our booth, tucked away in a corner, when we’re relieved of our coats and handed a wine list.

One of six Black & Blue restaurants around the city, this one’s location in Borough Market makes it ideal for business lunches, but it also has an outdoor terrace for relaxed, alfresco

dining.

It may be a school night, but that hasn’t stopped hordes of post-work diners turning out, with not a spare table in sight.

Ahead of us, a group of young men in suits chat animatedly, while to our left, a couple gaze into each other’s eyes in the candlelight.

The babble of chatter is joined only occasionally by the rumble of passing trains.

The restaurant’s name, while reminding me of a bruise, actually refers to its speciality dish.

“Grilled as black or blue as you like,” the menu reads. “To serve you the perfect steak, we use prime beef, hung the traditional way and aged for up to 28 days.”

With five different cuts to choose from, the waitress handily guides us towards the best choice for our tastes.

“If you like it rare, go for the fillet,” she advises. “If you like it medium to well done, go for the ribeye or sirloin

because the flavour of the fat will be brought out by slightly longer cooking.”

But it’s not just steak on the menu. To start, I go for the crayfish and guacamole salad, which arrives in a perfectly formed disc shape.

New keeper for Dulwich boss

It adds light to a winter’s evening both in appearance (it’s all green, pink and yellow) and taste, with a light, zesty and fresh finish.

Decorated with dill and a slice of lemon, and complemented by a deliciously creamy swirl of sauce, I’m sad when it’s over.

Emily’s prawns are a good size, come with just enough garlic sauce and thankfully have been sliced down the shell making them easier to eat.

When the waitress comes to clear our plates, she has already checked whether everything is OK with our food (it is) and has topped up our wine.

At £40 a bottle, the NZ Pinot Noir verges on the more expensive wine choices, but is delicious and excellent paired with red meat.

I spot the waitress with our food and the sight of it makes my mouth water.

Perfectly pink and juicy, good-sized slabs of meat lie on the plates, haloed with golden chips.

My fillet is delicious - so tender that it bounces a little when I prod my fork into it, cooked to perfection and with zero gristle.

Slightly more cooked, Emily’s ribeye is etched with dark brown griddle marks and is the size of her hand.

Both come with little silver pots of pepper sauce, complete with oomph-

adding whole peppercorns.

The sauce is very good, but is the only portion that is too small - there’s just not quite enough for liberal chip-dipping.

As well as the token greenery on the plate of meat, we share a vast bowl of salad, complete with crunchy croutons, parmesan and creamy Caesar dressing.

A lighter dressing could have worked better with the rich steak, but we enjoy it all the same.

Always room for dessert, I pick the chocolate fondant, which is perfect, oozing just the right amount of gooey chocolate in the middle.

The cheesecake lives up to its New York nametag - a slab of epic proportions with creamy vanilla topping that melts into a crunchy biscuit base.

The secret of a good steak house is to keep things simple and use first-class ingredients, and Black & Blue ticks all the right boxes.

The menu is straightforward - a few starters, homemade burgers, steak and other grills including fish and chicken.

Apart from the sauce, they don’t stint on portions, which makes the price tags all the more reasonable.

It’s a recipe for success - and the buzz of city diners here on a cold midweek evening, as trains rumble overhead, certainly seems to agree.

Planning a street party?

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Steedman Street at it’s junction with Walworth Road.

Hampton Street will be made two way between Walworth Road and Steedman Street and Steedman Street will be made two way between Marlborough Close and Walworth Road, to allow for access and egress.

An alternative route would be via Steedman Street, Hampton Street, as applicable.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will come into operation between the 27th – 28th April 2016.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Thames Water (Agility Alliance) to lay new water connections, it made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload at any time in Boxall Road between Dulwich Village and No’s 5 Boxall Road.

An alternative route will be via Dulwich Village – Turney Road- Aysgarth Road, as applicable.

THE A205 GLA ROAD AND GLA SIDE ROAD (LONDON ROAD AND LORDSHIP LANE, LONDON BOROUGHS OF SOUTHWARK AND LEWISHAM) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND STOPPING) ORDER 2016 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable resurfacing works to take place on Lordship Lane and London Road.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

a) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane/ London Road eastbound between Dulwich Common and Taymount Rise;

b) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane/ London Road westbound between Dulwich Common and Taymount Rise;

c) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane northbound between Dulwich Common and Melford Road;

d) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Lordship Lane southbound between Dulwich Common and Melford Road;

This Order will also suspend the banned left turn from London Road westbound into Sydenham Hill, allowing vehicles to turn left;

This Order will also suspend the one-way restriction on Melford Road for local access only , allowing two-way operation.

The Order will be effective at certain times between the 12th March 2016 until the 12th December 2016 every night from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner.

The prohibitions will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibitions are in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via: (1) for Melford Road closure: Wood Vale, Melford Road, Underhill Road, Dunstans Road, Upland Road; (2) for Underhill Road closure: Underhill Road, Melford Road, Wood Vale, Forest Hill Road, Honor Oak Road; (3) for Sydenham Hill closure: Sydenham Rise;

MILLWALL LIONESSES will travel to Loughborough Foxes this Sunday where they will be hoping to secure a victory in their fourth round SSE FA Cup fixture.

Whilst their Women’s Super League campaign does not get underway until next month the Lionesses have already

defeated Watford 3-1 in the third round of the cup earlier this month, a contest that was the first competitive game for new Lionesses gaffer Rebecca Sawiuk.

Since then Sawiuk has brought in three new faces in the shape of Megan Wynne, Billie Brooks and Leigh Nicol as she prepares her side for further cup success and a new league campaign.

Three of Millwall’s younger stars have picked up international recognition after being selected in the England Women's

U19s squad who will play in the La Manga Tournament in Spain.

Grace Fisk, Lucy Loomes and Rinsola Babjide are the young Lionesses who have got the nod, news that pleased their new boss Sawiuk.

FORMER MILLWALL keeper Preston Edwards has joined Dulwich Hamlet on loan for the remainder of this season.

Edwards was just nineteen when he left The Den in 2009, despite being offered a one-year deal, when he was the reserve keeper behind Irish international David Forde.

The keeper, who has been playing for Boreham Wood in the Vanarama National League this season, is currently registered as a Ebbsfleet United player but will now turn out at Champion Hill for the remainder of this campaign.

Edwards tweeted: “Excited for the new challenge @DulwichHamletFC #promotion.”

The keeper, who will vie with Phil Wilson for the number one jersey, took part in training with his new team mates last weekend and he was surprised when a famous Peckham face also put in a showing.

He added: “Just trained with Rio Ferdinand. It's all gone nuts.”

Last weekend Hamlet were due to take on Brentwood Town in a Ryman Premier League fixture but that was postponed after pitch conditions in Essex were deemed unplayable.

With the Pink and Blues sitting out the weekend action they now find themselves six points off top spot following those contests.

After Saturday’s games Hamlet’s next opposition East Thurrock United headed the table on goal difference from Hampton & Richmond Borough, the latter of whom have a game in hand.

AUSSIE MICHAEL Di Venuto has been appointed as new Surrey head coach on a three-year contract.

The 42-year-old replaces South African Graham Ford who left the Kennington club in January in order to take up a position with the Sri Lankan national team.

The Tasmanian will join Surrey at the start of April and he will oversee the club’s return to the top tier of first class cricket, following their promotion from Division Two last season.

Di Venuto is leaving a role at Cricket Australia where he has been assistant coach and lead batting coach for the last two years.

During his playing career, he opened the batting for Australia in nine One Day International matches and represented Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield, which he won in 2007/8.

In England, Di Venuto played domestically for Durham, Derbyshire and Sussex. He won back to back County Championships in 2008 and 2009 as well as the Friends Provident Trophy in 2007, all with Durham.

The new Surrey head coach said: “It has been a huge honour and privilege to have worked with the Australian team

but the chance to come to a club of the size and potential of Surrey as Head Coach was too big an opportunity for me to turn down.

“As someone who has always enjoyed the county game, I have followed Surrey’s progress over the last couple of years and look forward to working with this talented squad of players.”

TEENAGE RUGBY star SilasPaul Silcott has joined Premiership side Harlequins with a view to turning professional next year.

The seventeen-year-old cut his teeth at the Southwark Tigers, who are based in Burgess Park, and he is now on the verge of joining a club who play at the elite level of the game.

A Tigers spokeswoman said: “Silas started playing rugby when he was ten at the Tigers. He is now in the Harlequins U18s academy team and has a chance of a professional contract next September.

“Through Harlequins he moved from his secondary school in Peckham to the sixth form in a private school near Guildford on a full scholarship and is currently a boarding student.

“However he still lives in Southwark.”

MILLWALL COMMUNITY’S popular Soccer Schools ran again this Half Term at the Lions Centre with over 40 boys and girls aged 5-12 taking part.

Led by Course Director Stuart Jones, the players had fantastic training throughout the week covering a different theme each day. Monday focussed on dribbling inspired by loanee Jed Wallace, Tuesday saw the

players channel their inner-Webster as they concentrated on defending, whilst Wednesday was passing based influenced by Ed Upson.

Thursday honed in on in-form Lee Gregory with a shooting session and Friday finished the week off on turning motivated

by Shane Ferguson.

On Thursday afternoon Soccer School players were treated to a special visit from Steve Morison,

Joe Martin, Jack Powell & Lioness Leanne Cowan.

The first team trio each took a group of players and led various shooting and passing drills before overseeing short-sided games.

Once the practical sessions were complete, Morison, Martin and Powell then sat down to pose for pictures and sign photographs, programmes, shirts and even one or two boots!

Lion’s skipper Morison told millwallfc.co.uk: “Professional footballers have a big responsibility to give something back to the community and all three of us really enjoyed going along to spend time at the soccer school.

“It was great to see so many enthusiastic players there and hopefully they have taken something positive from the drills we oversaw, as well as the

tips and advice we were able to pass on.”

All players at the Soccer Schools received tickets for Saturday’s game against Peterborough to cheer on the players they met and the whole team from the family stand.

JAMIE PHILPOT is keen to make up for the disappointment of his Millwall debut – even though he scored on it.

Philpot was on target during the only eight minutes he has played for Neil Harris’ senior side, but his joy was short-lived against Wolves on the final day of last season when he suffered a knee injury that meant he missed the start of pre-season training.

The nineteen-year-old striker has been in Harris’ matchday squad a number of times since recovering from another knee injury he suffered

in an U21 game against Leeds in September.

He has yet to get on the pitch, but another 90 minutes for the U21s on Tuesday when he scored a penalty in their 3-1 defeat to Hull City in the Premier League Cup quarter-final aided his match sharpness.

And he is now ready to put his injury problems behind him as he targets a first-team opportunity.

“I scored with my first touch against Wolves but unfortunately with my third touch I got injured and for me it felt like it cancelled it out,” Philpot recalled. “So it wasn’t the best of days for me in the end.

“I’ve got my fitness up now and so if and when (Harris) calls me up to the first team I’ll be ready to make an impact. It depends on whether the

manager thinks he needs me. I’ll be ready if he does.

“After Wolves last season I wanted to come back stronger and better.

That’s just my attitude.”

Philpot, who joined Millwall when he was eight, moved up the pecking order this week when John Marquis joined Northampton Town on loan for the rest of the season.

He has been eagerly watching the first team from the sidelines, taking particular note of Lee Gregory’s scoring exploits and imagining himself getting on the end of quality deliveries from Shane Ferguson and Jed Wallace.

“The way I see it is if I come on for the first team I feel confident about making an impact and scoring,” Philpot says. “With the quality we’ve

Philpot was joined in the U21 side on Tuesday afternoon by Carlos Edwards, as he builds up his fitness after a hamstring problem. Philpot says he observes the senior players in training, paying particular attention to the way Steve Morison prepares.

“We all look up to the senior players: TC, Steve and Carlos, who was in the dressing room telling us to focus on the next game and how we can improve. It’s good to have that kind of seniority around you, watching them training, analysing how they play.

“Steve is in my position so I try to replicate what he does because he’s been very successful.”

Philpot also believes that playing in training against one of the best central defensive pairings in League One Byron Webster and Mark Beevers helps sharpen his striking instincts.

“Physically they’re unbelievable so I have to try to be a bit cleverer than them with the runs that I make,” Philpot explained. “I think that has allowed me to get the opportunity with the first team. I’m not the biggest, but I compete.

“Mentally I think I’m sharper, which allows me to get ahead of defenders for a chance on goal.

“The coaching staff have also shown faith in me and given me confidence.

That has allowed me to express myself, make the runs that I make and the chances I get from that encourage me to keep doing it.”

John hits the Marq after Cobblers switch

JOHN MARQUIS scored on his second debut for Northampton Town on Tuesday night as they beat York City 2-1 to move twelve points clear at the top of League Two. Marquis joined the Cobblers this week for the second time in his career after playing fourteen times for them in 2013-14.

The 23-year-old made six substitute appearances for Millwall after returning from another loan spell in League Two earlier this season at Leyton Orient.

Marquis tapped in from close range to put Northampton 2-0 up in the 51st minute and earned the praise of his new boss Chris Wilder afterwards.

Striker Marquis is out of contract with Millwall in the summer and has been behind Steve Morison, Lee Gregory and Aiden O’Brien in the Lions pecking order.

Manager Neil Harris admits he was keen to play regular football with his future beyond that uncertain.

“He’s not had the opportunity to start games that he would have liked,” Harris explained. “It’s plain to see that Steve, Lee and Aiden’s form has been outstanding this season and if one of them has had a slight dip one or two others have performed. The three of them have rotated really well.

“John was really frustrated early in the season and it was a good opportunity to go out and play some football for Orient. It didn’t quite work out as he had hoped so he was delighted to come back and he was a real breath of fresh air.

“He has been really patient but it got to the stage where an opportunity arose for him to go and start games and play regularly for Northampton.

“He’s looking at the long-term future from himself and his family.

“Ultimately, if a player says to me that they feel it’s time they move on to pastures new then I’m not going to hold a player against their wishes.”

Harris also praised Marquis for his attitude and hasn’t ruled out recalling him later in the season.

“John has been a good servant for this club and I’ve enjoyed working with him,” Harris said. “There is an opportunity to bring John back in the league season, or for the play-offs if we’re in them.

“So, it’s not done and dusted. But I don’t see the benefit in having players that are unsettled.”

BEN THOMPSON said he had “something to prove” against Peterborough last weekend.

The midfielder’s last experience against the Posh, by his own admission, wasn’t a positive one.

He came on for the injured Jimmy Abdou at London Road in the fifth minute of a 5-3 defeat last October, but was substituted fifteen minutes from time.

But Thompson, 20, made sure he took the lessons from that game, and he applied them superbly in the Lions’ 30 win over the same opposition last Saturday.

“I had something to prove, my first performance against Peterborough away wasn’t the best,” Thompson admitted. “It was probably one my worst performances in a Millwall shirt.

“It was definitely a learning curve for me. It was the first time I’d been called on so quickly to come on in a first team game. It’s something to learn, to be

prepared all the time.

“I always look back on games to see where I can improve and what I can do better in my game.

“But Saturday all round was a great game for me. I felt that I came in and shored up midfield and put in a good shift.”

The aggressiveness and determination that characterised his performance was illustrated by a tackle in injury time to stop a Peterborough counterattack and make sure Graham Westley’s side didn’t threaten to get a consolation goal.

That capped a rousing display – and brought a rousing reaction from fans who responded to the team’s robust display.

“Throughout the game you’ve got to always give 100 per cent,” Thompson stressed. “Whether you’re 3-0 up or 30 down, it doesn’t matter, you can’t give up.”

SHAUN Williams is back for Millwall after his two-game suspension, but he isn’t guaranteed to get straight back into the starting XI after Ben Thompson deputised so competently in the 3-0 win over Peterborough last weekend.

Carlos Edwards is also in contention after playing 60 minutes for the U21 side this week.

Millwall have won their last four league games away from home, while Doncaster haven’t tasted victory at the Keepmoat Stadium since beating Crewe 3-2 on December 12.

IT’S FAIR to say Mark Beevers’ name was more prominent on social media last Saturday evening than he would have liked after his first start in four games.

But it could have been worse. The defender was inches away from providing an infamous football clip that would surely have been replayed for decades, only for Jordan Archer to spare him that indignity with a superb headed save (below right) during the 3-0 win over Peterborough.

The clip went viral on social media anyway, with Jeff Stelling raving about it and Goals on Sunday calling Archer to get his reaction to it.

But Beevers said that while the players found it amusing, he doesn’t want to a repeat show.

“To cut a long story short I chested it down and made my decision to go back,” Beevers explained.

“I saw their striker running in so in a split-second I thought, ‘I’m going to have to give this a little bit more’. But it just carried on rising and it took a long time to come down. It seemed like an age. I was stood there thinking, ‘Oh my God, please slow down’. And it just carried on going.

“But me and Jordan joked about it and there have been a lot of jokes about it on social media. I heard the manager coming out and saying he didn’t want to see it happen again and obviously I didn’t intend to do it. Looking back there was no excuse for it really and I’m sure it won’t happen again.

“Sometimes when things like that happen you get a lot of stick but I haven’t had much stick at all. The worst I got was,

‘What were you thinking?’ And I’ve told you there what was going through my mind. I didn’t execute the pass right and it ended up being an unbelievable effort on goal and Jordan has done really well.

“Because it didn’t go in it’s something we can look back at now and have a little laugh and joke about.”

Archer’s save helped Millwall to a fourth clean sheet in five games. Beevers was suspended for the away wins at Walsall and Rochdale and then on the bench for the 2-0 defeat to Scunthorpe when Neil Harris decided to keep faith with Sid Nelson after two dominant performances.

But Beevers, arguably Millwall’s most consistent defender this season, had no problem with Harris’s selection criteria.

“I’m 26 now, I’ve been around a while and I know how it works,” he said. “If you come in and do well I completely understand. Sid came in and did well in two games, getting two clean sheets, so there was no reason why he shouldn’t have stayed in there. I didn’t grumble about that whatsoever.”

Beevers’ most recent suspension was his second of the season and though he was pleased that Millwall climbed into the top six without him, he is determined not to give up his place in the side again.

“It’s not nice, to be honest,” he admitted “The other lads are travelling up and playing the next day and you’re having to follow it on Soccer Saturday. I set myself up watching Jeff Stelling with the scores coming in. I was buzzing with the two wins, they were massive when you look at where we are in the league now.

“When you come out of the team you’ve just got to sit tight and wait for your chance. Mine came last Saturday and we got a clean sheet so it’s my job and my responsibility to stay in there from now until the end of the season.

“As a whole, the team and the club is moving forward.”

Winger Wallace loving life on the edge

JED WALLACE says he is enjoying the “edge” that comes with playing for Millwall.

The 21-year-old winger was on the winning side for the sixth time in the nine games he has played for the club since his loan move from Wolves as Millwall defeated Peterborough 3-0 last weekend.

And he believes there are few other clubs at the level of League One that can provide the same feeling.

“I grew up playing at Portsmouth where I was playing in front of top fans with big pressure, which I enjoy,” Wallace explained. “The last thing I wanted to do was go somewhere where you don’t have that.

“You definitely have that edge here. Every home game there are seven, eight, nine thousand fans and they’re the kinds of crowds I want to play in front of.

“In League One this is probably the best crowd I can play for.

“I said when I came to Millwall I’m grateful to the manager for taking me here. I’m really enjoying it.”

Wallace is due to return to Wolves after Millwall’s League One fixture against Shrewsbury on April 9, and he is determined to do as much as possible before then to ensure he leaves the club in the play-off spots.

“We’ve spoken a lot about how we’ve been compact away from home, we’ve won a lot of close games,” Wallace said. “I think at home sometimes we’ve been a bit too open wanting to do well and trying to win four- or five-nil but then getting picked off.

“Against Peterborough we stayed in our shape perfectly and then we had a lot of chances on the turnover where all of a sudden there are four of us in their box. That’s what we worked on.

“You’re going to lose games and there’s still a long way to go this season. Teams are going to have blips and teams are going to have runs of form but if we can stay in that top six now everyone will be happy.”

Meanwhile, Wallace seemed to dash Millwall’s hopes of potentially securing him on a permanent transfer in the summer after admitting he wants to make his mark at his parent club.

“Wolves was frustrating for me, but I wouldn’t say it’s a closed door,” Wallace said. “There’s a big expectation there, as there is here.

“I think I’ll still have an effect there down the line, maybe six, twelve or eighteen months. I still like to think that.”

That immediate battle was won last week when Lewisham Council deferred a decision on the future of an area that connects Millwall to its community.

On the pitch, Neil Harris’ players faced their own battle to convince fans that a promotion push wouldn’t perish on poor home form.

The Millwall boss had written in his programme notes before the game that he hoped the fans could give his players a “winning belief”, adding “your passion gave me that extra five per cent needed when I was striving for form or for goals”.

There were just over 8,000 Millwall fans at The Den, and they were determined that whatever the outcome there could be no questioning the strength of their support.

If the battle to safeguard the club’s future off the pitch will soon recommence, twenty-year-old Ben Thompson gave a stirring indication that the future on it is promising.

Thompson’s appetite for physical confrontation never ceased, and even in added time with Millwall 30 up, the midfielder could be seen scampering back to win a 50-50 tackle to help protect the clean sheet. Harris has spoken of players like Thompson and second-half substitutes Aiden O’Brien and Fred Onyedinma forming that emotional connection between the supporters and the team and the way they cheered that late tackle is evidence that it’s not some whimsical notion.

It does make a tangible difference.

The first big cheer of the contest came in the thirteenth minute, when Jordan Archer helped boost his growing cult status among Millwall fans with a unique, spectacular headed save.

He won’t have thanked Mark Beevers for the back-pass - a long, looping half-volley from 40 yards that sent Archer backpedalling and, unable to use his hands, he had to leap and head behind for a corner, ending up in the back of the net instead of the ball. Souleymane Coulibaly acknowledged the quality of the save as he helped his former teammate at Tottenham to his feet.

Peterborough set up in a similar fashion to Scunthorpe, Graham Westley having been present at that fixture and seeing the damage Stephen Dawson had inflicted as the advanced midfield player. On

Saturday, it was Jon Taylor – who scored two of the Posh’s five goals in a 5-3 win against Millwall in October – in that role and he tested Archer with a low shot that the keeper pushed around the post.

Otherwise, though, Millwall coped better with the formation and when Steve Morison scored with a half an hour gone it looked like it knocked the stuffing out of Westley’s side.

in the box and after Ben Alnwick had blocked the shot, the top scorer showed the creative side of his game by spotting Morison on the back post and the captain nodded home to join O’Brien on eleven goals for the season.

Morison, who is so important to the side as the focal point of the attack, and for his ability at defensive set-pieces where he has the uncanny knack of being in the right place to head crosses away, deserved his goals.

Whether Millwall get the decision they think they deserve off the pitch remains to be seen.

DEFENDER SHAUN Cummings is a “big loss” for Millwall, according to his manager Neil Harris.

Cummings played 20 times for the Lions this season, scoring once, but a persistent knee cartilage problem has convinced the club to take action now rather than wait until the summer.

The surgery rules him out for the season, but Harris said the timing of it will give

Cummings a chance to be ready for preseason training.

“He’s a big loss to the squad,” Harris said. “He had really stepped up since Christmas, since Southend away. He’s really worked hard on his game and we’ve done quite a lot of work with him to improve.

“The good news for Shaun is he’s getting to the bottom of the problem now.

We took medical advice to act now in the best interests of Shaun’s short-term and long-term career. He shouldn’t be far off full fitness for the start of next season.

“We could have delayed it and asked Shaun to carry on playing through the pain but there could have been a knockon effect. He’s going to be out for four or five months so if he’d played on we’d be looking at him having an operation in the summer and then not having him fit until next Christmas.

“Yes, we have to concern ourselves with results at the moment but the bigger picture is we have to think about Shaun’s health and football career.

“He’s played with pain and swelling and hasn’t been able to train to the level he
