MP HELEN Hayes is pushing the government to make sure the UK’s Brexit uncertainty doesn’t negatively affect wildlife protected by EU legislation – including the common pipistrelle bat.

The MP for Dulwich and West Norwood supports the Bat Conservation Trust as a ‘species champion’ for the pipistrelle, one of ten species of bat recorded in London out of the eighteen resident in the UK. Throughout March and April she has continued to question the government on its plans to prevent biodiversity loss and the

Department for Rural Affairs’ track record against targets.

Bat numbers in the UK have sharply declined, with habitat loss, building work and even street lights threatening the creatures’ ability to roost.

Although pipistrelles are the most commonly found type of bat in Britain, they are still a protected species under EU legislation.

As European Protected Species, it is illegal to capture, injure, kill, disturb or destroy the breeding or resting place of all eighteen species of UK bat.

The London Bat Group has been recording sightings across London to track their number and distribution, including in Southwark enclaves such as

“I’m extremely concerned about the impact protests are having on our ability to tackle issues like violent crime if they continue any longer,” he said in a statement.

TESCO METRO in Elephant and Castle shopping centre has permanently closed months earlier than planned after struggling to fix a mouse infestation.

Last month's shut down, originally thought to be a temporary measure, has now been made permanent as the supermarket says it cannot guarantee further outbreaks.

The loss will come as a blow to staff and customers who thought the retailer would continue operating for the next few months before the redevelopment.

NEW PRIORITY seating has been unveiled on the Jubilee line this week by transport bosses, in a bid to encourage commuters to give up their seat to those in need.

As part of the ‘Priority Seating Week’, new designs for the seats will begin to appear on the line with six different messages including “please offer this seat” and “someone may need this seat more.”

It comes as a survey commissioned by the quango reveals that nearly a quarter of Londoners feel too

awkward to offer up their seat – while almost a third believe that you only need to give up your seat if sitting in a priority area.

Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “It’s vital that we make our transport network accessible to all Londoners and visitors, so I’m really pleased that distinctive new

priority seats are being rolled out on the Jubilee line.”

The designs will be fully rolled out in the coming months. The move has been welcomed by charities working around disability and mental health.

A Met spokesperson said the incident happened just before 1pm on Monday, April 22, and involved three vehicles.

A MAJOR refurb of a Bermondsey primary school has been delayed over “issues and risks” on the project.

Works to the ground and first floor of Galleywall Primary, a City of London sponsored academy, were due to be completed by Easter. They are now expected to be finished by August.

The City of London Academies Trust has asked the Department for Education for an additional £283,000 to cover the unexpected costs on the scheme which include “materialised risk related to the window refurbishment” and “additional Building Control requirements for fire safety works.”

The outcome of the bid was expected to be delivered to the Trust as the News went to press. A City of London Academies Trust spokesperson has been contacted for further comment.

“To avoid a potentially disruptive decant it has been agreed that works to the occupied Ground and First floors will be postponed from their original Easter completion date and now complete during the summer holidays,” states a report sent to the City of London’s projects subcommittee.

“The impact of this postponement is to extend the programme to end of the summer holiday - this will also incur extension of time costs from the contractor.”

No additional funding has been sought from the City for the delayed works to Victorian building, dating from 1876.

So far over £3.7million has been spent on the refurb, covering the replacement of lighting and a new

boiler, a lift, mechanical and electrical installations on the ground and first floor and “general building fabric repairs.”

An approved budget for the school building refurb has been set at just under £5.9 million.

Students at the school are not expected to be affected by the delay, as work will be carried out during the holidays to avoid decanting the occupied ground and first floors of the school building.

The two-form entry school was

opened in September 2016 with an initial intake of 60 reception students.

It will reach its full capacity of 420 students by 2023, according to the Trust’s website.

The Department for Education has also been contacted for comment.

A LANDMARK RULING AFTER ‘SOUTH LONDON TEENS USED TO SELL DRUGS’

A ‘GANG master’ from Lewisham has been convicted for human trafficking after grooming and abusing vulnerable youngsters from south London for a county lines operation between the capital and Portsmouth.

The Met described this week’s conviction at Inner London Crown Court as a landmark in the fight against modern slavery.

First tried at Woolwich Crown Court in January 2018, on appeal the case went to a new trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Twenty-five-year-old Michael Karemera, from Lewisham and 25-yearold Dean Alford, from Canterbury, were both charged with three counts of trafficking.

Karemera pleaded guilty part-way through his trial under cross examination, while Alford pleaded guilty at the close of the prosecution’s case.

Also tried was Glodi Wabelua, 25, from Tottenham, who was found guilty of one count of trafficking.

They will be sentenced on Tuesday, May 14 at the same court.

The gang were first investigated by police in 2014, when officers in Hampshire arrested five teenagers from south London selling drugs. They were aged between fourteen and sixteen.

A sixth victim, aged nineteen, was supported to give evidence by an outreach worker.

From behind a screen, to protect his identity, he told the court that when he tried to leave the gang, he was stripped naked by Karemera's associates and threatened with a gun to his head.

recruited, groomed and trafficked by the organised crime group and forced to travel to Portsmouth as part of the drug selling operation involving three 'lines' run by each gang leader.

Alford ran the 'Duffy' line, Karemera ran the 'Mitch' line, and Webelua ran the 'Fly' line. Drugs sold include crack cocaine and heroin.

Jurors heard how the victims were controlled by the gang, kept in drug users' homes, and given instructions via mobile phone. The three defendants would text their customers when drugs were in supply, and then receive callbacks as the users began to place their orders - often up to 300 incoming calls a day.

Their victims would then be sent out to sell the illegal narcotics on the streets of

Portsmouth, often at night, before depositing the cash - sometimes as much as £2,000 - within 24-hours.

Detectives snared Alford, Karemera and Wabelua with DNA evidence and mobile phone data. But only one victim felt able to give evidence.

Karemera was arrested on September 10, 2014, in Winterwell Road, Brixton, and an address at Blondin Way in Rotherhithe was searched the following day. He was charged in October 2016.

Alford was arrested in 2014 and charged in 2016, as was Wabelua.

The trio were first tried for drug offences in February 2016 at Woolwich Crown Court, where Karemera was told he will serve ten years behind bars,

Alford was handed an eleven year sentence, to run consecutively with three years for perverting the course of justice, and Wabelua was jailed for six years and eight months.

They will all now be sentenced for their human trafficking crimes.

Senior Investigating Officer, Acting Detective Inspector Simon French, said: “The complex nature of this investigation and the determination of our officers to pursue human trafficking charges demonstrates how seriously we take the issue of county lines.

"This case was previously tried at Woolwich Crown Court in January 2018.

The jury were discharged following the close of the prosecution case.

"This led to a successful ruling through

the Court of Appeal in June 2018 and a new trial set at Inner London Crown Court.

"This is a successful test case and we are sending a clear message to drug dealers who engage in this activity.

“Following the Court of Appeal ruling we have clearer guidance on how this legislation should be interpreted and [it] makes it clear that any person involved in the chain of trafficking the victim for drug supply can be prosecuted.”

The Crown Prosecution Service says this case is one of very few where drug dealers have been successfully prosecuted for arranging the travel and exploitation of their teenage couriers, using Section 2 of the Modern Slavery Act, which came into force in 2015.

BERMONDSEY MAN Kevin Downey, 60, will be hanging up his trainers after running his thirtieth London marathon this year for little Harvey Brown.

He has run nearly every London Marathon since 1986 for good causes raising an estimated £140,000 for charity in the process.

This year, Kevin will run for Millwall’s team mascot, Harvey, 10, who suffers from the ultra-rare Morquio syndrome.

It affects skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease, and worsened vision and hearing.

Money raised will go towards the MPS Society, a small charity which helps people with Morquio and other related syndromes.

But this year’s run will be Kevin’s swansong after three decades of running.

“I’ve been running the marathon for half my life,” he said. “It’s gotten harder, and I’m not getting any younger!”

He met Harvey’s family through Millwall, and has known them for around 30 years, he says.

“He [Harvey] is a lovely Bermondsey kid, especially how bubbly he is. He hasn’t got a care in the world, it’s great,” said lifelong Millwall fan, Kevin.

“The MPS Society is such a small charity, so every penny helps really.”

Harvey’s doting dad, Dean, told the News said the family would be there to cheer Kevin onto the finish line.

“Not only raising much needed funding for the MPS Society, but also raising awareness is such a lovely gesture,” said Dean.

“We’ll be there cheering him on at the finish line, another emotional day I’m sure.”

THIRTY-FOUR-year-old Fiona, from East Dulwich, is taking part in the marathon for the first time.

She is raising funds for Diabetes UK, to help find a cure, as her brother Iain and partner Hakim both have Type 1 diabetes and her auntie and grandmother have both been diagnosed with Type 2.

She said: “Signing up seemed like such a good idea when I was topping up my tan watching it at mile nineteen last year!

“I have completed the Great North Run before and thought it was time to push myself a little further and go for a full marathon.

“Training has taken over my life. I am sure my friends and family are sick of hearing about my workouts, runs and physio sessions, but I have enjoyed everything about it.

Wayne, originally from Walworth, smashed his original target of £2,500 and now has to honour a promise he made to little Finley to grow a beard – and dye it yellow to match his running vest.

The 35-year-old is running in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, a condition which causes the body to produce thick mucus negatively affecting sufferers’ lungs, digestive system and liver.

But despite forty tablets a day and doing two daily physio sessions to dislodge mucus from his lungs, Finley doesn’t let CF get in his way – captaining his football team, appearing in TV ads, and travelling the country to watch the Lions play.

Dad Wayne told the News that his training for the third London marathon he’s run was made even more difficult by Finley having to be in hospital for four weeks late last year.

Explaining why he is running for the CF Trust, Wayne said: “The CF Trust is for families and sufferers but isn’t governmentfunded. So everything goes towards research and supporting families as well.”

A medicine which could improve lung function for those suffering from CF are not current funded on the NHS despite a dispute between the government and the drug’s makers, as it is too expensive.

AN EVERYONE Active community development manager is running his first London Marathon in memory of his uncle, who died of lung cancer.

James Tierney, 29, lost both his aunt and uncle to lung cancer. Having previously run the Bath Half in 2012 for his aunt, he is now raising funds for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation in memory of his Aston Villa fan uncle.

And naturally he’s been training in Everyone Active gyms across the borough, including Southwark Athletics Centre and Camberwell Leisure Centre.

“I have wanted to complete a marathon for as long as I can remember, so to be able to run on behalf of The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is extremely important to me,” he said.

“My friends often describe me as ‘rather lean’ and a ‘sporty’ type, but I have never run anywhere near this distance before.

“I’m sure the atmosphere and crowds will

be amazing and running for such a personal cause will carry me across the finish line.

TWENTY-FIVE-year old Toby, a financial advisor from Herne Hill, is defying the odds to run the London Marathon two years to the day after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma.

Now cancer free, Toby is running for CLIC Sargent, the charity that helped him through his treatment.

“It was from the first day of being diagnosed that I was inspired to sign up for the marathon,” he said.

“It happened to be the day of the London Marathon and I was stood alone on London Bridge. I can remember it so vividly.

“I was in my robe and then there was everyone finishing the marathon with their medals and that’s when I promised myself I would do that.

“I had spent my first night in intensive care as tumours had narrowed my airways.

“I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without being breathless and now I know I will finish the London Marathon like I have finished my treatment.”

Toby was skiing with friends when he first realised something wasn’t right. After visiting the doctor, what seemed to be a chest infection turned out to be stage three-to-four Hodgkin lymphoma.

“I had been suffering from a chesty cough for a while and so I visited my doctor a few times but they just kept sending me away with antibiotics and an inhaler – diagnosing it as a chest infection. Being young and otherwise healthy, I kept thinking ‘I’ll be fine’.

“As time went on however, I was really struggling for breath and was throwing up. I just kept thinking ‘there is something wrong with me’ and so I went back to the GP.” Doctors found growths around his windpipe and chest that had spread all the way to his belly button. After diagnosis, he

quickly started his treatment at Guy’s Hospital.

Toby went into remission at the end of 2017, and last year a scan confirmed he was still clear. He credits the support he received from CLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading charity for young cancer patients and their families, with helping him get through.

“No one really warned me how bad chemo and the side effects would be. I wasn’t able to sleep or breathe properly,” he said.

“Everything just hurt and I had months of just trying to get through every day.

“Friends can treat you a bit like you’re in a zoo as they don’t know what to say, but Liz, my CLIC Sargent community worker, made me feel less like a victim and normal – and realise I’m still just a young person going through something bad – but I don’t need to

be defined by that.

“If it hadn’t been for Liz and CLIC Sargent, I think I would have just drifted through my treatment and felt alienated. She was just there for me to both emotionally and practically support me.”

Toby is now back at work full time and has been training for the race as part of a team of five, including his girlfriend Emily, brothers Chris and George, and friend Nikola.

“You never know how much a charity can help you until it happens to you,” he said.

“I was lucky I wasn’t too financially affected by my cancer and had family and friends to support me. I have seen that not everyone is so lucky.

A WOMAN suffering from both asthma and emphysema is running the Marathon this year to fundraise for Asthma UK.

Forty-eight-year-old Renee-Marie Young, who works in Southwark as a learning and development manager for the National Landlords Association, was diagnosed with chronic lung condition emphysema in 2016 after suffering from asthma since she was eighteen.

Renee-Marie said: “I know that eventually my lungs will slowly fill up and restrict my breathing, so later in my life I will need the support and help of these wonderful charities and intensive medical assistance.

“I wish to raise money for those less fortunate than I and to keep running to keep breathing for as long as I am able.”

Danny first had problems with his sight in his early 30s, as a complication resulting from diabetes. Later, he was also diagnosed with glaucoma, a sight condition which damages the optic nerve and causes permanent sight loss.

Joanna, who has never run a marathon before, and only recently taken up running, said: “I’ve always dreamt of running the London Marathon.

The little girl was born on April 28 last year – a year to the date of the Marathon but when taken home her doting parents noticed she was lethargic and had saliva bubbling around her mouth.

An X-ray revealed she had rare birth defects affecting her food pipe and airways – which could have been fatal.

Tom’s partner, Rebecca, said: “It was horrific and every parent’s worst nightmare.

“We didn’t know it at the time, but Isabelle was becoming really weak because she hadn’t slept and milk and saliva was going straight to her lungs, which meant she was basically drowning.”

She had also signed up to do the Marathon, but will no longer run after the couple found out they were expecting their second child.

Fourteen members of the hospital’s cardiology team will join Alamgir after they treated his son, Zaki Kabir, 13, for a serious heart condition.

The teen was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect called truncus arteriosus when his mum, Seleha, was 20-weeks pregnant with him. The condition means a single artery comes out of both ventricles of the heart, instead of the usual two – and can be fatal.

Zaki had life-saving surgery at the hospital to correct it when he was just six-weeks-old, and again when he was 5 and 12. He has since made a full recovery.

Alamgir, who himself is a Alamgir and Zaki heart doctor at an Essex wearing medals hospital, said: “We were devastated when we found out Zaki had a serious heart condition.

“My wife and I were terrified at the prospect of him undergoing major heart surgery at such a young age. But the heart team at Evelina London were amazing.

“They really went out of their way to put us at ease. As a heart doctor myself, I was extremely impressed by the cutting-edge treatments given to Zaki and the dedication and care shown by staff.

“We owe Zaki’s life to Evelina London. I really couldn’t thank the hospital enough.”

Running the Marathon was his way of saying thank-you, Alamgir said. “I know the challenge will be really tough but running with the team who saved Zaki’s life will make the day extra special,” he added.

Dr Aaron Bell, paediatric cardiologist at the hospital, said he was “absolutely delighted” Alamgir was taking part in the Marathon, and that Zaki was doing well.

OUTHWARK IS one of London’s largest social housing landlords and it also has huge demand for housing, with around 25,000 people estimated to be on its register.

In theory, anyone who has lived in Southwark continuously for five years or more is eligible to join the list, but in practice, only a small proportion of those actually eligible will be successful.

Families in unsuitable housing, like those we meet on page 17, have bid for ten years to no avail – until now.

There are also those trapped in temporary accommodation, including 2,000 children growing up in homes like this, such as flats on the crumbling Aylesbury Estate.

Some aren’t able to even stay in Southwark, finding themselves houses in places including emergency accommodation outside London and far away from work, school and their support networks.

London’s housing crisis is nothing new, and neither are the downsides associated with regeneration, and when it becomes gentrification.

We need new homes, revitalised high streets, and all the benefits that come from investment and change.

But given a painful history of estate ‘decanting’ and ‘affordable’ homes that are anything but, there is an understandable distrust when new homes – including social housing – are announced.

Southwark Council’s new council housebuilding programme is the largest of its kind in forty years, but there are still concerns the council can’t keep up with the problems of right to buy sell offs and prohibitive land prices. But despite government cuts and ill-thought out planning laws, councils do have a lot of say over the homes they can afford to build – or contract to others to construct.

And it’s not just new homes people need and deserve, it’s new homes that will stand the test of time.

Councillor Leo Pollak says he wants Southwark to lead a ‘race to the top’, with high quality social housing people aspire to live in and that are best in class when it comes to design.

This speaks of an acceptance that our borough’s history with architecture, planning and housebuilding is somewhat chequered.

Some of our most high-profile estates failed to make it beyond even a few decades before being torn down with new builds rising from their ashes, at huge cost to the taxpayer.

Building on a budget council homes that are considered beautiful, aspirational, and remain structurally sound in 50, even 100 years’ time, is a circle we need to square if we are to bring some much needed civic pride to our borough.

Rather than going the way of the Heygate and Aylesbury, we hope that this time, these new homes stay around a bit longer.

THE DETAILS of every new council home being built in Southwark can be revealed for the first time, with data exclusively shared with Southwark News.

The newly obtained figures show exactly how many homes are in the works for each ward in Southwark, from London Bridge and Bermondsey to Dulwich Village.

Labour was elected on its commitment to build what it says is the largest new council house programme in the last forty years - 11,000 new homes by 2043 - with ‘at least’ 1,000 of them completed by 2022.

The current pipeline has over 2,700 council homes either completed, on site, or in the early stages of public consultation or planning approval.

Last week’s announcement that Southwark had been awarded more than a half a million by the London Mayor’s Homebuilding Capacity Fund was particularly welcomed by the council’s elected housing boss, Leo Pollak.

Twenty-plus new sites will be added into the current pipeline by the end of June – including those on sites recently purchased by the council.

The Bermondsey councillor said the cash injection would help ‘expand and accelerate’ its existing plans by effectively creating twelve new jobs within the council so its ‘resourcestrapped’ team could get more done.

“Since 2013 we have already built 730 new homes, of which 635 are council rent,” he told the News. “In the pipeline are 2,000 more across 70 sites, but we need more skills and to up our headcount in the council to speed up the delivery.”

Southwark Council’s housing record has been criticised by groups such as the 35 per cent campaign, who say wholesale demolitions like the Aylesbury and Heygate mean Southwark is losing council homes faster than it can build them.

As the News has reported, a government analysis showed the council is not only failing to keep up with demand, but is one of the worst performing boroughs in London.

Southwark needed to build 5,941 new homes in the three years, the test states, but only managed 4,771 – leaving a shortfall of 1,170 new homes.

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have attacked Labour’s poor record in bringing empty properties back into use, arguing the estimated 6,000 empty properties in the borough should have a council tax hike or forcibly be taken over.

It is certainly true Southwark Council is operating in a tough climate.

Although the housing borrowing cap has been lifted by central government, the council still struggles to cover the cost of new homes through grant funding and financing.

Pollak says it costs, on average, £310,000 to construct each new home – up from just about £200,000 in 2010.

The legacy of right to buy, and land speculation, both muddy the waters.

Between 30 and 55 per cent of Southwark Council’s 16,000 leaseholder homes in Southwark are now rented privately.

Incredibly, as the News has reported, the council is even forced to spend money renting them back from their owners for its tenants.

With 25,000 people listed on Southwark’s housing register, for many the chances of getting a council home that meets their needs may seem almost impossible.

But Pollak is optimistic the new homes programme will deliver for residents.

The focus is not just on sheer numbers, as it is hoped aspirational and high-quality designs will make the borough best in class.

“Council housing is a prestigious tenure and we want to lead the race to the top,” he said.

Accessible flat for mum with COPD

AMANDA MERRIGAN has lived in a second floor maisonette on the North Peckham Estate for 20 years.

Describing herself as ‘excited but a bit scared’ about the change, she said having so many people moving who already know each other would make a big difference on the new estate.

“There is a real community around here, and everyone looks out for everyone else,” she said.

Climbing six flights of stairs each day to her current flat was getting more and more difficult with her COPD and back problems, so the accessible flat would make a huge difference to her and her children who still live at home.

‘I have never dreamt of anything like it’

ABIMBOLA ASIWAJU will be moving to her new tenancy on Sumner Road from Blackthorne Court after bidding for a new property for the last decade.

“We found out in November when the flat was being built, which we were very happy about,” she told the News.

The mum of three says moving into

a three bedroom home means, for the first time, her fourteen-year-old son will have his own room.

“It is very beautiful here – I never even dreamt of anything like it. With the garden, kids can play here without us worrying,” she said.

“I’m hoping to get the keys next week.”

A COMMUNITY garden in Peckham that was created by TV’s Charlie Dimmock is hosting a community event this Sunday, April 28.

McDermott Grove Community Garden was developed in 2002 when it was totally transformed into a beautiful, welcoming natural area from a dangerous overgrown space with the help of the BBC’s Charlie Dimmock and her ‘Garden Army’.

Maintained by a small group of local people, the area is frequently used for community events and school visits and this Sunday from 12noon they are installing their new hare sculpture and are inviting everyone to attend.

GRANTS FROM a £140,000 pot of money have been awarded to projects to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing.

The captain of the historic voyage, Christopher Jones, and many of the ship’s crew lived in Rotherhithe, from where it set sail in 1620.

Eight projects which so far have received funding include a photojournalism initiative from Club Herop, a multimedia community arts programme by the Bermondsey Artists Group, and the Illuminate Rotherhithe festival.

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Local History Society, said he was delighted his projects were among those given a grant to commemorate the all-important anniversary.

He said: “Our Local History Society organises illustrated monthly talks on fascinating subjects.

“During the summer of 2020 we will stage a mini-series of talks and walks about the Mayflower here in Rotherhithe.”

The fund is run in partnership with the council, British Land and United St Saviour’s Charity.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, deputy leader of the council, said there already been an “impressive” list of applicants, but that £60,000 was still left to be applied for.

“I would encourage any local group,

school or other interested party who have a project which is connected to the Mayflower, and use the application process on the Council’s website to apply for a grant,” she said.

The Mayflower first set sail from its home port of Rotherhithe in July 1620 to join the Speedwell which had set off from Holland to Southampton. The Speedwell suffered a serious leak and both were forced to turn back, before passengers and provisions regrouped onto the Mayflower at Plymouth.

It then set off sail for the New World in September that year with its passengers including the Pilgrim Fathers.

THE PROPOSED closure of ticket offices at Overground stations including Surrey Quays, Rotherhithe and Honor Oak Park will not go ahead following a Uturn.

TfL and Mayor Sadiq Khan have pledged an additional £5m in funding to keeping the ticket offices open following a backlash from the RMT union, which led a campaign against the changes, announced last September.

RMT General Secretary, Mick Cash hailed the reversal as a “significant victory,” saying it was proof trade union campaigning works.

At some quieter stations, ticket offices will be open a minimum of 7.30 – 10am Monday to Friday, and longer where customer demand is over 12 transactions an hour, said the Mayor’s office.

The exact times for each of the stations will be confirmed following consultation with trade unions.

Chaplin, cocktails and a campfire

WITH SO much variety in the opportunities to enjoy life these days, the get up and go out people are always looking for that something extra, that something with a difference, so this new underground silent movie venue Down the Shaft - will tick that box.

Midnight Apothecary, the awardwinning pop-up campfire cocktail bar that has built up quite a reputation from the rooftop of the Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe since 2012, has launched an exciting new film club directly beneath its garden in one of London’s most secret and unusual underground venues, the Victorian underground Grand Entrance Hall to Brunel's Thames Tunnel.

‘Down the Shaft Film Club' launches its season on Thursday 2 May with some classic silent cinema featuring local Southwark icon, pioneer and hero Charlie Chaplin, as well as two Laurel & Hardy shorts, and all three films accompanied on grand piano by the virtuoso talents of the UK's leading silent film piano accompanists Meg Morley (2 May) and Neil Brand (16 May). You can look forward to Charlie Chaplin's Easy Street (1917) a Laurel & Hardy's Big Business (1929) and Liberty (1929).

Truly one of Charlie Chaplin's finest and most enduring short films, Easy Street sees Chaplin playing The Little Tramp who becomes a police constable who must fight a huge thug that dominates an inner-city street. The look and feel of Easy Street evokes the South London of Charlie Chaplin's childhood, with some stating that Easy Street could be Walworth's East Street - the street near his birthplace. It’s a film that walks a fine line between humour and pathos.

Unlike the athletic antics of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy based their comedy around mannerisms, reactions and silly situations, But in Liberty (1929) we find them out of their depth quite literally, high above the city in a half built skyscraper.

Liberty was one of Laurel & Hardy's last silent films, and to many fans their funniest ever film. This film has it all. With the police hot on their tail as two escaped convicts, Stan and Ollie attempt to change clothes in their getaway car only to find themselves struggling to balance on top of the girders of an unfinished building. They were comedic geniuses and this film shows them at the peak of their game.

Big Business (1929) finds the duo as Christmas tree salesmen trying to

sell their wares door to door in California in the summer. It is many people's favourite Laurel & Hardy silent film.

What better way to spend the evening than enjoying some fireside merriment in an enchanted candle-lit roof garden before descending underground into a unique historic venue to celebrate the work of local Southwark legend Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy.”

Guests are invited to arrive from 6pm for campfire, wild cocktails, local beer, hot toddies and sizzling seasonal street food (not included in the price of the ticket) in the candlelit secret roof garden. They will descend underground at 7.30pm for the films. The campfire, complimentary toasted marshmallows and streetfood will be available before and between the films.

Unicorn Theatre teams up with ENO for the first time

IN A first ever collaboration, English National Opera and the Unicorn join forces in presenting Dido, a contemporary staging of Purcell’s powerful and emotionally charged masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, for young audiences.

Belinda is the only child of Dido, a teenager like any other, in any big city.

We watch through her eyes as her mother – heroine, feminist icon, modern parent – slowly starts to fall apart, with tragic consequences.

The Unicorn’s former Artistic Director Purni Morell directs a company of twenty-two that includes three principal singers: Rachael Lloyd as Dido, Njabulo Madlala as Aeneas and Eyra Norman as Belinda. They will be performing with a chorus of twelve and seven musicians from the ENO orchestra, in this searing new production for teenagers and adults, conducted by Valentina Peleggi – the ENO Mackerras Conducting Fellow.

Originally composed for a girls’ boarding school in 1689, Purcell’s Dido

and Aeneas is one of the most admired operas in the English canon – a timeless and tragic story of love, suffering and isolation set to some of the most sublime and exquisite music ever written.

This production, faithful to the Baroque score, refocuses the piece so that it is seen through Belinda’s eyes and the epic story is brought into contemporary relief in all its visceral truth. For some this will be a chance to see a familiar and much-loved opera in a new light, while for many in its young audience it will be an incredible first experience of a classic.

Dido is designed by Khadija Raza, a finalist of the Linbury Prize 2017.

All You Need Is Love gets them dancing THE NATIONAL Philharmonic Concert Orchestra warmed up before four young men walked out onto the Cadogan Hall stage to recreate some of the classic Beatles’ tunes that were never played live by the Fab Four in their heyday. They were the world’s best, so a hard act to follow. Nevertheless, these performers gave a good account of themselves, writes Michael Holland...

They began with the concert’s title song, All You Need Is Love, and even tried to get the audience participating in the chorus. Too early. We were still

trying to work out if these boys were actually any good. Fortunately they were and as well as the team effort they put in on making those classic songs real once more, they all had their own solo spots to shine in.

Just as impressive was the orchestra, who were stupendous for Eleanor Rigby and who had to pull out all the stops for Tomorrow Never Knows., and really came into their own in the second half of the show that took us through Sgt Pepper and on to the Yogi’s Indian Ashram for some sitar flavoured tunes like Norwegian Wood and Across The Universe. Inevitably the concert closed

with The End, with the now-ubiquitous Hey Jude as their encore number. Thank McCartney for that. Surprisingly the crowd was not all of a certain age, but included many younger members, which proves the everlasting, timelessness of The Beatles. And it was them doing the dancing.

lmost as soon as we sat down in Tower Mangal a plate of warm bread was presented to Fiona and I, along with two dips: cacik and a hot, spicy one that caught me unawares as it hit the back of my throat.

After a few minutes Urdi came over to introduce himself as the man taking care of us for the evening before asking if we would like more bread. As we refused he signalled for a large platter of salad to be brought; ‘We give the bread and salad free to all our customers,’ he said. We looked at it, then at each other, and so began a feast that we never thought would end.

The salad was beautifully presented and exquisitely dressed, so Fiona took a mental note when Urdi explained that the main ingredient in the dressing was pomegranate juice. While we continued working our way through, Urdi came with a Turkish pizza (Pide), describing the minced beef topping, spices and thin, crispy base. ‘This is fantastic for me,’ I beamed, ‘but Fiona is vegetarian.’

‘No problem,’ said the wonderful man who had taken over control of all my dietary needs. ‘Fiona, I have a special surprise for you.’And it wasn’t long before Sigara Boregi arrived, feta cheese deepfried in a filo pastry. These were light and crispy to the bite and then melted in the mouth. We were feeling quite full by now, but then Urdi returned and asked if we were ready to order! Ready to order? I was ready for a lay down on the nearest settee!

Anyway, we didn’t want to appear rude so my dining companion ordered stuffed vine leaves and a vegetable kebab. I dithered over the menu looking for something that wasn’t too heavy. ‘I have something special for you, Michael,’ said my new dietician. He then went on to paint a picture of meat, cheese and sauce that brought my taste buds back to life - Sarma Beyti. When these main courses arrived on plates the width of the table and Urdi told us they are the small plates, we knew we were in trouble! I managed about a third of mine and Fiona had a good go at her mountain of food.

It was now time to meet the family over Turkish tea (complementary). An uncle came and sat with us (He’d had the Tower Kebab House that was here before for over 20 years); dad was cooking in the kitchen, a cousin was on the grills, more uncles were prepping out the back, and other relatives were making themselves busy making this new venture a success.

After a while Fiona felt ready for a Rice Pudding, before Urdi brought two rich, Kermal Pasa (complementary) that really finished us off.

solid base of returning customers. It is easy to see why: the service is impeccable - No one leaves not feeling happy. We left smiling and with a bag of the lovely food we couldn’t eat.

Does anyone notice May Day?

THE NEWS has delved through its archives to find an article exploring how residents used to celebrate one particular bank holiday;

AMID THE plethora of days off around this time of year, one regular bank holiday has almost gone unnoticed – May Day.

In most calendar years the early break in May is most welcomed as a day off for all, but it is also steeped in history encompassing amongst other things milk maids, chimney sweeps and a fair bit of debauchery.

Neil Transpontine has collated local history and other noteworthy events on his blog, www.transpont.blogspot.com for and has also produced a detailed pamphlet about the history of the bank holiday in Southwark.

He told the News: “In Bermondsey you can trace the history of the day from the 17th century to the present day. I started off doing a number of talks about May Day and it just came together that I had enough information to do the booklet.”

The 50 page booklet entitled ‘May Day in South London: A History’ has a ton of detail about how the day has changed over the years. Starting initially as a celebration in the sun, and developing as a day where unions would call their members onto the streets to stand up for workers rights.

The early celebrations were reported to regularly descend into high jinks, with fornication high on the menu, and the celebrations became a target of an increasingly puritan society. A particular Bermondsey festival induced the ire of a local vicar, with an extract from the pamphlet reading: “In Bermondsey, there was a maypole at Horsleydown. A painting by Joris Hoefnagel of a fete there in around 1590 shows a very tall wooden pillar opposite the Tower of London, approximately where Potters Hill Fields park is now situated.

“Opposition to the local maypole was led by Edward Elton (c.15691624), the vicar of St Mary Magdalene.

“Elton was a prolific puritan, the author of such works as ‘The complaint of a sanctified sinner answered’ and ‘A plaine and easie exposition upon the Lords prayer in questions and answers’. In 1617, after preaching against the pagan evils of May Day, Elton led a mob to cut down the local maypole.”

Mr Transpontine said: “I think why people liked the May Day festival was that it is a time of year where it starts to get warmer and people wanted to go outside and enjoy themselves.

Looking at some of the accounts from the 16th and 17th century it would probably be equivalent to going to a rave today.”

Whilst a crackdown on the more outlandish behaviour took place, the way the day was celebrated changed thanks to a couple of very different professions.

collecting money, before descending on maypoles scattered across the capital. Diarists at the time stated that one pole in Kennington, situated near Black Prince Lane, was a favourite haunt.

By the 19th century the day was associated with another group of workers, chimney sweeps. In 1801, Joseph Strutt, described the Chimney Sweeps’ May Day: “The chimneysweepers of London have also singled out the first of May for their festival; at which time they parade the streets in companies, disguised in various manners.

“Their dresses are usually decorated with gilt paper and other mock fineries; they have their shovels and brushes in their hands which they rattle one upon the other; and to this rough music they jump about in imitation of dancing.”

The author of the latest pamphlet on May Day felt they did have other

motives rather than triggering a celebration. Collections would be made on the day that would supplement the sweeps’ income, just as fires went off in houses and they were less in demand.

According to Mr Transpontine the day continued to develop and change through the centuries, with horses taking centre stage by the end of the 19th century.

Those who worked with horses, including dustmen and other workers, would take part in an annual parade competing for prizes. After trotting through the streets of Bermondsey those taking part would be given the rest of the day off, whether they scooped a prize or not.

One of the customs of the day that has stood the longest is the crowning of a May Queen. Reports suggest that the May Queen ceremony was still taking place in Browning Street in Walworth up to the 1960s continuing

a tradition that commenced before the Victorian age.

In the 20th century, particularly after the Second World War, May Day took on a political lilt with demonstrations often taking place then so people did not have to take time off work. In latter years the demonstrations have

taken an anti-capitalist turn, with smaller more local events taking place all around Southwark based on a more traditional aspect of celebrating the day.

AN OLD favourite came back to haunt Dulwich Hamlet on Easter Monday but fortunately it didn’t dampen the atmosphere at Champion Hill as the majority in a plus-3,000 crowd toasted a successful season in National League South.

Safety in the sixth tier already secured, Gavin Rose’s side lost 3-1 to Woking, with Reise Allassani scoring a second-half brace for the visitors at his old stomping ground.

Allassani spent a season with Hamlet before leaving for Coventry last summer after the Dulwich side secured promotion. He went on loan to Ebbsfleet earlier this season and has now helped Woking to a second-place finish and qualification for the playoff semi-finals.

Hamlet will be disappointed to finish their home campaign with a defeat, but considering they didn’t even have a home in the first half of the season they will easily be able to put it in perspective. They had the hard work done, their status in the division secured.

Hamlet hit the bar early on through Connor Hunte, after Allassani had missed his side’s best effort.

Hunte was soon stretchered off before Quade Taylor cleared off the line for Hamlet.

Midfielder Charlie Allen then had a glorious chance to give the hosts the lead after Dipo Akinyemi had sent him through on goal, only for Moussa Diarra to save his side with a last-ditch tackle.

And just before half-time Diarra pounced at the other end when he headed home a free-kick.

The creator of that goal also made the second in the 57th minute, Max Kretzschmar crossing for Allassani to slide home.

SOMETIMES YOU just have to hold your hands up and admit you were beaten by the better team.

Aston Villa needed just the one goal but gave the impression they had several more gears to go through if they needed them.

It would have been a more severe beating for Millwall had it not been for the performance of David Martin, who was outstanding. He made seven saves and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

It was almost a one-man act of defiance, especially late on when Millwall were trying to get players forward chasing an equaliser but left themselves exposed. If there’s a perfect hat-trick in football – left foot, right foot, header – Martin was close to producing the perfect goalkeeping display. There were one-on-ones, reflex saves and a left leg that denied Jack Grealish.

Millwall barely laid a glove on their opponents. Villa were like the brother with their hand on the little brother’s head as he flails trying to land a punch.

The difference in quality was striking and epitomised by Grealish.

He has that ability that really good players have when they seem to play the game at their own pace. Grealish appeared to have all the time in the world when he was on the ball. He played in a deeper midfield position on the left, combining with Anwar El Ghazi to give Millwall a torrid time down that side, particularly in the first half.

But Villa had so many threats from so many areas. El Ghazi would have been wondering how he didn’t score.

His best chance was late in the game when he raced through on goal but Martin came out to narrow the angle and then tip El Ghazi’s effort around the post.

The Lions have lost eight games away from home since early November, all by a single goal. It doesn’t seem like a lot to be proud of, but it’s actually that ability to dig in, stay in games and not capitulate that gives them an added advantage over Rotherham. That stubbornness has contributed to a plus-fifteen better goal difference than the Millers, who have lost games 5-1, 61 and 4-0 this season. It means that one more win for Millwall from their final three games will all but secure safety.

There was some criticism from Lions fans after this game that the side lacked “fight”. That was very

unfair. Millwall were outclassed, and often what looks like lack of effort is really just one team moving the ball around so well the other can’t get near it.

Neil Harris felt it would have been a different story had Alex Pearce’s nod-down in the first half been finished to the net rather than been scrambled away. But that was clutching at straws. Villa always looked like they could raise their levels if they needed to.

Dean Smith’s side played like they were keeping something back for the play-offs, which they are on the verge of securing their place in after

a club-record tenth consecutive win.

Harris admitted he was “dejected” afterwards, particularly as there was a nervous wait to see how Rotherham would fare against Birmingham. There would have been plenty of chewed fingernails on the Lions coach back to London when Matt Crooks gave Rotherham the lead they held until the 56th minute when Birmingham hit back and then added two more to confirm their own safety after their ten-point deduction had briefly dragged them into a relegation battle.

That leaves just one from Millwall and Rotherham to join already-

relegated Ipswich and Bolton back in League One. There won’t be any panic from Harris and his players.

They are playing well – Monday’s class divide aside – and Rotherham have rarely given the impression they have enough to survive. They

have won just one of their last seven games, losing five. They go to West Brom next, then host Middlesbrough on the final day.

Bristol City next week. The Lions could seal their safety this weekend when Stoke come to The Den. The Potters have little to play for, but as they showed in postponing Norwich’s promotion party on Monday with a 2-2 draw, they won’t be easily pushed over.

But Millwall would take their situation over Rotherham’s. The mood around Calmont Road will still be positive, and there will certainly be nobody feeling sorry for themselves.

After four straight league losses in March, Millwall have become difficult to beat again. Games like

Monday just reminds them of the gap that exists between the haves and have-nots.

Grealish was linked with a £25million move to Tottenham last summer and whether Villa go up or not he will surely be playing in the top flight next season and if anything that price tag has gone up based on his performances this campaign.

For all Villa’s quality, it was an error that let them in for their first real chance. Ryan Leonard’s wayward pass was pounced on by Jonathan Kodjia who raced through on goal, but the brave Martin dived at his feet and the ball rebounded off

the striker and wide.

But Villa didn’t have to wait long for another chance. They created it from that left side, El Ghazi crossing and Kodjia prodding in from close range at the near post. El Ghazi is on loan from Lille, has played in the Champions League for Ajax, and been capped by Netherlands. Kodjia, who has eight goals in seventeen games for the Ivory Coast, cost Villa £15million from Bristol City. To reiterate the point again, it’s to Millwall’s great credit they are competing with these sides, and taking points off the likes of Derby and Middlesbrough away.

When Millwall needed something from the bench, Harris sent on Steve Morison, Tom Elliott and Aiden O’Brien. But those players have scored just six league goals between them this season, and didn’t really make an impact at Villa Park.

Instead Millwall became more open, and Andre Green – who was on loan at Portsmouth with Ben Thompson in the first half of the campaign – saw his volley saved by Martin, who then denied El Ghazi.

Villa coasted. They had eighteen efforts on goal, and there were several near misses.

By contrast, Lee Gregory was so isolated up front, and Ben Thompson’s absence was keenly felt.

It was left to Jed Wallace to try to get close to Gregory, and the attacking midfielder had two of his side’s efforts. He fired in a first-half shot that Jed Steer saved, and then Pearce had that header that Leonard just couldn’t reach. In the second half Wallace ran to the edge of the box but shot over.

Jake Cooper had a better chance than he realised, heading wide after Steer had rushed from his goal but missed the ball. A glance from Cooper would have taken it into an empty net.

Leonard and Ryan Tunnicliffe had their hands full trying to contain Grealish and the stylish John McGinn, and barely made it into Villa’s half.

If Millwall were going to find a goal it was set-pieces likely to do it.

That was the Lions’ last effort, and it was Villa Park exuberantly celebrating at the end.

Lions’ current captain insists Millwall have the character to survive

ALEX PEARCE insisted Millwall will keep “fighting for the cause” – and said the Lions’ next two games at The Den are “massive” as they aim to avoid relegation.

Millwall’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Monday has left them just three points above the relegation zone. One of the Lions and Rotherham will join Ipswich and Bolton in being relegated to League One, but Millwall have their fate in their own hands.

They have two chances at The Den to confirm their safety, first against Stoke this Saturday before the visit of play-off chasing Bristol City the following Tuesday.

Pearce revealed what boss Neil Harris told the side in the dressing room after the final whistle.

“Just keep your heads up, that was the message,” Pearce said. “We’ve got to go again. We’ve given it a big effort here [Monday] but unfortunately we’ve come out on the wrong side of the result.

“But it was just the gaffer saying, ‘keep your heads up lads, keep going, we’ve got a massive ten days coming up and the whole season lays on these ten days’.

Millwall have endured a difficult season and have been in a relegation fight for most of it. Their eighth-place finish last season when they almost reached the play-offs raised expectations.

They lost George Saville to Middlesbrough in August and several key players have missed chunks of the campaign through injury.

Pearce insisted Millwall aren’t fearing the battle.

“It’s about one thing this year,” he said.

“It’s about staying up in the league. We have to help our own cause and I think we’re showing that in games.

“We are showing we’ve got the fight, the effort and the determination. It’s just working on that bit of quality in the final third or in the build-up play to get us in those areas. It’s a work in progress but hopefully we will be back to winning

ways on Saturday.”

Millwall’s narrow defeat at Villa Park was their eighth straight away loss by just one goal.

Pearce, the current Millwall captain on the pitch, sees the positives in that.

“It shows we’re in games,” he said.

“We came up against a very good Villa side, they’re up there for a reason and you wouldn’t bet against them to go up this year, for sure.

“We stayed in the game well causing them the odd problem here and there.

“Keep your heads up, keep going, we’ve got a massive ten days coming up and the whole season lays on these ten days”

We had a good shape about us, we weren’t giving away chances and that was the plan, really, to try and frustrate, try and stay in the game as long as possible and try and have a real go late on.

“We would have liked to have had more of a go possibly later in the game but, credit to them, they managed the game really well, took the ball into the corner, killed the game well and we just couldn’t quite get that last chance for ourselves.

“It’s a frustrating day but one we can look at and take some positives from and move on to another big game on Saturday.”

Pearce was involved in one of Millwall’s early chances on Monday, helping the ball back across goal from a corner but there was no team-mate to provide a finish.

He continued: “There was one in the first half, the ball got whipped in and I put it back across and unfortunately Lenny [Ryan Leonard] just couldn’t get his head to it.

“There was another one in the second half, I put the ball back across and

Greggs [Lee Gregory] was unlucky with the effort. It just didn’t quite fall for us. Coops [Jake Cooper] had one as well, and if that’s on target when the keeper comes rushing out then it goes in.

“We were in there with a fighting chance, it’s as tough stadium to come to.

The fans get behind them and it’s a tough crowd. We can be pleased with the performance and effort levels.”

Millwall struggled at times to cope with Villa’s midfield, the game run expertly by Jack Grealish.

“He’s a quality player, well known, certainly at this level,” Pearce said. “He is certainly one that could play at the level above and they’ll be looking to do that next year, they’ll be looking at getting promoted.

“That’s where they are as a club. It’s different for us, we’re looking to stay in this league and trying to contain players like Jack Grealish is a tough ask. But I thought on the whole we did quite well with that.”

The Lions will hope to secure survival before the final-day trip to Wigan.

Pearce is pleased that the two games before that are in their own back yard.

“It’s massive, massive,” he said. “Any team coming to The Den should know they’re in for a tough game and Saturday should be no different.

“We’ve got a few good characters in there. Everyone’s pulling in the right direction. We’ve got a great bunch, a tight-knit group and everyone gets on well. We’re all fighting for the cause.

“It can be [mentally tough] at this time of the season. But there is loads to play for and that is a motivation in itself. We are in a relegation dog fight and have been for a while. There’s massive onus on these games and we are going into each of them highly motivated and ready to go.”

Meanwhile, Pearce, 30, also confirmed that he has not retired from international duty. He has seven caps for the Republic of Ireland after his debut in 2012.

Former Lions boss Mick McCarthy is back in charge of the country as they look to qualify for Euro 2020.

Pearce has not given up on receiving another call-up.

“Hopefully, yeah. That’s not for me to say on that one, but obviously it’s a privilege to represent my country and I will do it whenever I’m asked with 110 per cent commitment.”

THE DEN will breathe a huge sigh of relief this weekend – if Stoke City are successfully put to the sword in South Bermondsey.

It won’t be fully mathematically guaranteed but if the Lions defeat Nathan Jones’ side then Rotherham would have to hope Millwall lose their last two games of the season, they win theirs, and there’s at least a sixteen-goal swing. Millwall fans are often fatalistic about their side but even they would surely admit that is extremely unlikely.

Stoke have little left to play for but pride, though they did draw 2-2 with Norwich last Monday, a result that leaves the Canaries waiting to confirm promotion to the Premier League.

Jones has a lot of top-flight quality in his squad, and as Brentford showed over the Easter weekend sides that can play with freedom are a danger.

Stoke haven’t quite got the bounce they would have hoped for after appointing Jones in January. They were eight points off the play-offs, thirteen

points above the bottom three when they sacked Gary Rowett. They are still thirteen points above the relegation zone, but the gap to sixth has grown to fourteen points. Jones had guided Luton Town to promotion from League Two in 2017-18 and to second in League One before Stoke came calling.

Allen is a fan of his boss, who he says is trying to implement a particular style of play with the Potters.

And the midfielder was pleased after his side came from behind to grab a point against Norwich.

“The gaffer gave us a lift, the rocket that we needed really, to get back out there and do the things that we had

been working on in training,” Allen said.

“As a group we were passive in the first half and allowed them too much possession of the ball, which is what we didn’t want to happen because that is when they are at their best.

“We had to limit that, and the way of doing that is by keeping the ball ourselves, and we were far better at that in the second half.

“They are chasing promotion, and the title, and after the break we really took the game to them, and deservedly got our reward for that.

“It has been frustrating for the manager in many ways that players haven’t quite been capable of doing the things he wants doing quicker.

“But I have to say that he and his staff have been great since they came in here, and there is an enormous amount of groundwork being put in place.

“From my point of view we are really close to getting to where we expect and need to be at on a consistent basis.

“Norwich are the blueprint for many clubs because last season they had the same inconsistencies as ourselves, but

they have really worked hard together and moved forward this season.”

“Every player is a cog in that machine and you can see that in the way that they play. They are a top side, who deserve promotion, and we would love to follow suit next season.”

Millwall probably have different ambitions, if they stay up, but they can make Allen less positive about his own club’s future this weekend.

Neil Harris is unlikely to be able to call on Ben Thompson, who was having a scan this weekend on a hamstring injury he picked up against Brentford.

The big decision over the formation is whether to continue with Lee Gregory up front as a lone striker, or pair him with Tom Elliott or Steve Morison.

Shaun Williams could also be pushing for a recall, while Harris might decide to move Shane Ferguson to left-back in a more attacking line-up.

Millwall go into their defining games of the season, with Lions fans ready to celebrate this Saturday and not have to worry about Rotherham’s result later in the day.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris has hinted that David Martin could earn a new deal after his recent performances.

Martin, 33, has started the Lions’ last seven league games and kept three clean sheets.

He has impressed with the way he has bounced back after his high-profile mistake against Brighton cost Millwall a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Former MK Dons stopper Martin is a popular player in the dressing room, and Harris admires his leadership qualities.

After playing just four times in a

season-and-a-half, Martin was considering his future and hadn’t ruled out a move elsewhere. He is out of contract this summer.

But his unexpected elevation to become Millwall’s first-choice goalkeeper could change things for both parties.

Harris was asked about the goalkeeper’s future after the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Monday.

“He’ s putting in some really good performances and when you want players to step up at this stage of the season and try and earn a new contract and prove themselves, he can’t do much more at the moment,” Harris responded.

Martin produced a string of saves at

Villa Park to keep Millwall in the game, and earn the praise of his manager.

Harris added: “I thought Dave was excellent, his handling was excellent. It was probably an even better performance than he put in here last year when he made his league debut.

He deserved a clean sheet.”

Millwall now have two home games, against Stoke and Bristol City, when a win in either will see them beat the drop.

Harris is positive about his side’s recent form.

“We competed with Villa, just weren’t good enough to win the game. We’ve had six points from four games.

“Before that, places we’ve lost [like] Leeds, we were outstanding.

“We’ve had a tough run but we’ve got some good points. Once we rearranged the Bristol City game our season became defined by those two home games.

“Our season can twist and turn on the back of Stoke and Bristol City.

[Monday] was not a free hit because of the position we are in, but coming to Villa Park in front of 40,000 people, I think my players enjoyed it.

“Stoke and Bristol City are two good sides but we need to be better than them. Stoke coming to The Den, an exPremier League club with a big following, should be right up the street of my players and my fans and we have to make sure it’s a strong and hostile place to be.”

MILLWALL WILL target a centre-back, left-back, winger and striker in this summer’s transfer market.

The Lions could confirm their safety in the Championship this weekend, which would allow them to fully focus on recruitment for the second tier.

The club have had to keep two different transfer lists for players for four straight seasons under Neil Harris, as they were going for promotion in 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18, before this campaign’s relegation battle has left their future uncertain.

A drop into League One would mean a smaller transfer budget and the targeting of third-tier rather than second-tier quality players.

The Lions could lose Lee Gregory to a free transfer this summer and would need a replacement. Tom Bradshaw will return from his longterm injury but with Steve Morison turning 36 in August and Tom Elliott not having the impact hoped for attacking reinforcements are a priority. Millwall would like to do a deal for Alex Pearce, who has made a big impact since his loan move from Derby. The 30-year-old centre-back is out of contract at the end of June.

Ben Marshall is also unlikely to have a future at Norwich, particularly as they are set for promotion to the Premier League so will strengthen accordingly. An offer of around £1.5million could tempt the Canaries to do business. Millwall would also like to add a central midfielder, while the goalkeeping situation is uncertain, with Jordan Archer out of favour and Ben Amos’ loan ending next month.
