POLICE ARE hunting for two men who burst into a busy Rotherhithe pub on Sunday evening and shot a man in the leg.

The incident took place in Whelan’s, in Rotherhithe Old Road, at around 8.50pm, when the pub was packed with customers celebrating the run-up to Christmas.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News: “Two men in balaclavas burst in the door and went straight up to the man and shot him in the leg.”

Best Christmas present possible for Barretts

I

T WAS a fantastic effort from News readers to raise the thousands of pounds needed to send young Alfie Barrett to America for life-saving treatment - and the best possible Christmas present for his mum Kelly.

In a matter of weeks, more than £2,000 was raised on a Justgiving page set up local funeral director Gary Valentine Fuller, whilst Alfie’s school, Walworth Academy, raised another £2,000. Now Kelly and her three children are in the States, where Alfie will be receiving proton beam therapy for his brain tumour.

Thank you to all the generous readers who helped to make this possible, and we wish the Barrett family the very best of luck over Christmas and the New Year.

This savage crime demands punishment

T WAS an appalling crime stamping on a young pregnant woman and killing her unborn child - and the only solace that Malorie Bantala can take is that her attackers will languish in prison, and hopefully for a long time to come. But of course that won’t be enough.

The mind boggles at how anyone could do that to a defenceless woman who was heavily pregnant - and even more so that one of the perpetrators was the father of Joel, her unborn child. Kevin Wilson had decided he didn’t want her to have the baby, and somehow enlisted the help of a seventeen-year-old friend to carry out the vicious attack.

Wilson, a teaching assistant, had an ‘unblemished record’ prior to this - now he will have years to reflect on what he did, and hopefully to regret.

STAR WARS: THE NEXT GENERATION? Peckham boy, 11, asks John Bo ye g a ho w t o c r a c k H o llyw o o d

A SCHOOLBOY from Peckham got to meet a Jedi last week when he was sent by BBC’s Newsround to interview Star Wars’ leading man John Boyega.

The pair had plenty to talk about because eleven-year-old Jonas now goes to Theatre Peckham, where Boyega learned his trade.

When Jonas asked what productions Boyega, who grew up on the Sceaux Gardens estate, had been in when he was the same age, the Hollywood sensation replied: “I was Mrs Wobble the waitress. I think was my best performance to date.”

Jonas then asked if Boyega had any tips for him because he wants to

follow in his footsteps all the way to Hollywood.

Clearly impressed by his interviewer, Boyega said: “You’ve already started very well. At eleven years old, you’re at Theatre Peckham, where I was.

You need to train because it’s going to get to a certain stage and you won’t be singing about clowns anymore and that’s going to be fun.”

After Jonas asked Boyega to do an impression of Chewbacca, the pair swapped autographs.

His former mentor at Theatre Peckham, Teresa Early, was invited to attend the UK premiere of the seventh instalment of the intergalactic franchise and tweeted: “Theatre Peckham Alumni @JohnBoyega at #StarWars premiere! Thanks for invite

In a galaxy not so far, far away in Peckham, Darth Vader was joined by enthusiastic Star Wars fans for a showing at Peckhamplex.

The cinema director, Marianne Gray told the News, every time John Boyega came on screen, the packed auditorium erupted into spontaneous cheering. The Star Wars screenings have been full several times a day with those making a special effort in fancy dress getting a round of applause from their fellow cinemagoers. Peckham hit the headlines this week when news emerged that Boyega had taken co-star and Hollywood heavyweight Harrison Ford for some Nigerian food at the 805 restaurant down the Old Kent Road.

‘I’ll cook Neil Harris a ten-course meal’ vows Masterchef finalist

A MILLWALL fan has reached the final of MasterChef: The Professionals, vowing to cook Neil Harris a ten-course meal if the Lions manager can find some free time between training and matches.

Scott Barnard is taking part in a special version of the popular cooking show, with alreadyexperienced chefs going head-tohead on the BBC2 hit show.

He told the News about his

experience on the show and how supporting Millwall is like being on a “rollercoaster.”

He said: “My parents were brought up in New Cross and Bermondsey. I was born in 1982 and always loved football as a kid and supported my local team. My parents and all my family supported Millwall as well. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Typical Millwall fan, it’s a rollercoaster, isn’t it? But I’d never support anyone else.”

He spoke of his heroes, Teddy Sheringham and Tony Cascarino, and said that if Millwall were a dish it

He said: “You can’t explain the pressure when you walk through that MasterChef kitchen. It’s not like your full restaurant at work, it’s completely different. You forget how to cook, you make silly mistakes so it’s not until you find your feet you feel a little bit more comfortable.”

TWO PEOPLE were dramatically rescued by the London Fire Brigade last week after becoming trapped in the arches of Southwark Bridge.

The incident occurred at around during the early hours of the morning of December 18, when one fire engine, two rescue units and a fire boat arrived at the scene.

A spokesperson for the LFB said that “line rescue equipment” was used to lower the people from the bridge’s arches down onto a waiting

boat from Lambeth River Station.

Photos show fire officers helping the trapped pair off the bridge in harnesses, while the boat bobs in the Thames thirty feet below. The pair reached the boat safely and taken the shore, where they were attended to by the London Ambulance Service.

Watch Manager Steve Howlett from Dowgate Fire Station said: “Thankfully neither of them were injured.”

The bridge was closed by City of London Police during the incident, which began at around 2.20am and ended at 3.40am. Twenty fire officers attended the scene.

Man who planted cameras in coffee shop loos filmed over 3,000 people

A VOYEUR who secretly filmed thousands of people by planting hidden cameras in coffee shop toilets in Southwark has been jailed for four years.

George Thomas first set up cameras in the unisex showers where he worked before going on to plant more in coffee shops in Southwark, Greenwich and central London.

The 38-year-old captured 3,000 men, women and children on film before the first camera was discovered and reported to the police.

He also filmed three women who worked in his home and two women who lived in a block of flats to which he had access.

Thomas carefully planned his secret filming with each video clip saved alongside a photograph of the victim taken in a public area. These were then organised, labelled and saved on hard drives.

Thomas, of Glaisher Street, Greenwich, was arrested and when police looked through the extensive footage, gathered between 2009 and 2015, they found evidence of other

cameras planted in coffee shop toilets in Southwark and elsewhere.

Two further cameras were found on Thomas when he was searched and a number of hard drives and computers, which contained more footage were found at his home and place of work. The officer leading the investigation viewed over 650 hours of recordings which revealed a sophisticated, organised and longrunning campaign of voyeurism.

Detective Constable Sarah Gardner said: “The images of unsuspecting people going about their daily

“Due to the nature of the offences Thomas’s offending, I must consider if he has committed other offences that we are not aware of.”

POLICE ARE hunting for two men who burst into a busy Rotherhithe pub on Sunday evening and shot a man in the leg.

The incident took place in Whelan’s, Rotherhithe Old Road, at around 8.50pm, when the pub was packed with customers celebrating the run-up to Christmas.

A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told the News: “Two men in balaclavas burst in the door and went straight up to the man and shot him in the leg.”

After shooting the man, the two gunmen shot at the ceiling, warning the terrified punters not to chase after them. They then fled into the night.

Attention then turned to the victim, who was bleeding heavily from the

gunshot wound to the leg.

“We thought he was dead, everyone was screaming. The blood was just flowing out of him, but a man came and did first aid and probably saved his life. He put his leg up and stopped the bleeding, you could sort of see him coming back to us after that.”

Police were called and found a man, believed to be in his fifties, “suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.” He was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The pub has not re-opened following the incident and is expected to remain closed for the time being.

No arrests have been made and police enquiries are ongoing.

A GRATEFUL mum has sent a big thank you from America where her son is now able to get life-saving treatment on his tangerine-sized brain tumour, thanks to donations from generous News readers.

When doctors told Kelly Barrett, 35, that the only hope for her thirteen-year-old son Alfie was for him to get proton beam therapy in the States, she started fundraising to get her whole family out there before Christmas.

Thanks to thousands of pounds being donated in a matter of weeks, Kelly and her three children are now in America where Alfie is getting the treatment he needs.

Walworth Academy, where Alfie goes to school raised £2,000, and more than £2,000 was raised on a JustGiving page set up by local undertaker Gary Valentine Fuller.

“I want to thank each and every one of you who helped make this trip for Alfie and his family to go to the USA for his proton beam therapy,” said Kelly, who lives on the Aylesbury estate.

“It means everything to us to be out here, thank you all so much.”

Kelly has been in a living

nightmare since her first-born was a toddler and she noticed him walking on his tip-toes all the time, which can be indicative of a neurological condition. After a barrage of tests he was finally diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of five in February 2007.

Alfie’s treatment will take nine weeks in total so the family will be in the States over Christmas and hope to come back in the New Year to make a fresh start. Kelly would like to thank everyone who has donated and particularly Friends of Beormunds, psychic medium ‘Lisa Jane’ for holding two fundraising nights and Alfie’s Godmother Anne Lorraine for all her support.

Club backs rival over flats proposal

A PECKHAM nightclub owner has spoken out in support of a neighbouring rival venue after the News reported it could be threatened by an application to build new flats.

After thousands of people pressured a developer into withdrawing a residential development which could have threatened the thriving Bussey Building, another petition was started to save Canavan’s, just down the road.

Well over 4,000 people have already signed up online to protect Canavan’s Pool Club in Rye Lane from a proposed development next door, which includes 22 flats.

Speaking to the News, business rival and owner of the Bussey Building Mickey Smith said he was going to stand shoulder to shoulder with Kieran Canavan to keep Peckham alive and kicking.

“They’re facing exactly the same thing as we were,” he said.

“Residential there would really damage Canavan’s - it’s right up against their building,” said Mickey, who remembers when it was just a pool club selling “awful beer.”

“You’ve got to give them respect for what they do with underground music.

CUSTOMERS AT Manze’s in Tower Bridge Road were surprised to spot Mayor of London Boris Johnson and mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith chowing down on a heaped helping of pie and mash last week.

The Tory duo caused quite a stir when they popped into the Bermondsey landmark for a bite to eat, accompanied by aides and a photographer.

politician’s Facebook pages show the pair deep in conversation – although it is noticeable that Boris had eaten a considerably larger portion of his meal than Mr Goldsmith, who had barely touched his plate.

Graham Poole, one of the shop’s owners and grandson of the founder, said: “I don’t know how to say this without sounding big-headed but we get a lot of famous people in. Some people come for their own reasons, but most just come to eat.

“When they were leaving Boris patted his chest as if to say ‘oops, no money.’

“However, the staff on that day told

him “nobody gets any special treatment here”, so his aide had to pay!”

Boris posted on his Facebook page: “Yesterday I enjoyed a wholesome pie and mash lunch at the fantastic M.Manze with my friend, and hopefully my successor at City Hall, Zac Goldsmith.”

Mr Goldsmith added: “Lunch at M.Manze - the oldest pie and mash shop in London - where I bumped into an old friend...”

He will go up against rivals including Labour candidate Sadiq Khan in next May’s London mayoral election.

THE MOTHER of an unborn child who was killed by his own father has told of how she “lost everything” the moment her baby Joel died.

Teaching assistant Kevin Wilson, 22, was found guilty of a horrific attack on his ex-girlfriend Malorie Bantala in June of this year when he and a seventeenyear-old accomplice, kicked and stamped on her stomach until the baby growing inside her was dead.

In her impact statement to the court during Wilson’s trial, the brave Marks and Spencer’s worker told of how she almost died herself after the brutal ambush by two men in motorbike helmets in Talfourd Road, Peckham on June 15.

“If I was given the opportunity to raise Joel I know that I would have raised a wonderful, responsible, strong man, a man that would have been a hundred times the man Kevin could ever be. But due to the assault which led to the death of my son, an inhumane, brutal and sickening attack on my son, I nearly died also.”

The court heard how the attack was so prolonged and powerful that some of Malorie’s bones were broken, including two of her fingers from where she had desperately tried to protect her baby.

From her kitchen window, television producer Lisa Gilchrist saw Malorie curl up in a ball while the two men were “kicking her stomach with as much force as they could,” she said.

She then saw the suspects run away before Malorie stumbled to her feet screaming “my baby.”

She was rushed to King’s College hospital but her unborn baby boy could not be saved and was stillborn by emergency Csection. Malorie, needed lifesaving surgery to control bleeding from a major artery.

“The moment Joel died inside of me I lost everything,” said Malorie in her statement. “Life as I knew it no longer made any sense, I lost myself. I often thought I no longer had a purpose in the world, if Joel isn't here then why am I?”

The Old Bailey heard how Wilson, of Longfield Estate in Bermondsey, pre-planned the ambush on the woman he had a relationship with at university in 2011.

After the pair had a one night stand on holiday three years later, Malorie fell pregnant and Wilson demanded she have an abortion.

When she refused, the teaching assistant enlisted the help of a seventeen-year-old friend, who cannot be named to carry out the attack as Malorie walked home to the Pelican Estate after arranging her baby shower.

“People often refer to me as the ‘victim’ of a horrific attack…the real victim of this attack is my son Joel; an innocent baby who did nothing bad to anyone,” said Malorie. “My attackers had the opportunity at a life, they've lived, they've loved, they've travelled, and they've had life-changing experiences. My son will never have that. Joel never got to meet me properly, he'll never know how much I love him, I'll never get to see him smile, see his first set of teeth, watch him struggle as he learns to crawl or watch him take his first steps. I love my son so much, words cannot even describe it…now I'm left with a suitcase full of his clothes, hand prints and foot prints, and some pictures.”

Despite wearing motorcycle helmets to disguise their identity, Malorie immediately recognised Wilson’s large frame, his mannerisms, and his distinctive Adidas tracksuit and Nike trainers.

Now her only hope is that Wilson and his younger accomplice will be “suitably punished by the law for their lies, their lack of guilt, their deception and most importantly for taking the life of my son Joel from me.

“They have taken a healthy life and taken a part of me that I will never get back. I want them to pay in return for what they have done, for killing a baby before it had any opportunity to live life.”

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Pack, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said it had been a “truly shocking case. Shocking that a man would plan and carry out such a violent and abhorrent attack with the sole intention of destroying the life he had helped create. Also, shocking that any

Executive head teacher, James Waite, described Wilson as having an “unblemished record” during his time at the school after he made it through their “stringent vetting checks.” “We were all shocked at his arrest and we are dismayed and saddened at the actions he has been

found guilty of,” said Mr Waite.

On Thursday last week a jury found Wilson and the seventeenyear-old guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and child destruction at the end of a two week trial.

Wilson glanced at the jury as the verdicts were delivered while Malorie erupted in an outburst of emotion and had to be dragged from court kicking and screaming.

She banged on the glass dock shouting: “I’m going to kill you, I f***ing hate you, f***ing drop dead.”

Wilson then had to be taken down to the cells looking faint as the judge warned both they could face life sentences for the attack.

A date for sentencing is still to be set.

A BERMONDSEY gang of jewellery raiders who were caught after being tackled by a have-a-go hero have been jailed for a total of just over 30 years for their £561,000 crime spree.

Alex Parle, 22, of Brunel Road, Rotherhithe, Thomas O'Connor, 23, of Swan Road, Rotherhithe and Conor Gartland, 18, of Druid Street, Bermondsey, targeted jewellers and money transfer shops in London and Manchester.

The gang smashed their way into shops using sledgehammers and concrete blocks “in a violent and frenzied manner” before ransacking window displays or ordering terrified staff to hand over cash.

Wearing crash helmets and gloves, the raiders roared off on scooters with handfuls of watches, jewellery and money.

Their year-long robbery campaign came to an end after 6ft 7in Parle was grabbed by smartly-dressed jeweller Dominic Carr as he tried to flee from Carr Watches and Diamonds, in London’s Liverpool Street.

Dramatic footage, filmed on an onlooker's mobile phone and available to watch at our website, shows 48year-old Mr Carr jumping on Parle's back before Parle pulls out a large machete and swings it around before running off.

Dominic Carr said in a statement: “I do not see myself as any kind of hero.

My reaction that day was a spontaneous response to protect, but the repercussions of it have been tremendous.

“The fear of what could have happened had the man with the machete actually used it, is something that goes over and over in my head.

Who would look after my wife and children if he had actually killed me with it?”

Parle was arrested later that day and the subsequent investigation revealed Parle and his accomplices were responsible for a string of similar robberies over the previous year, one of which had taken place in Peckham.

On December 20 last year, Parle, O’Connor and Gartland raided Bilex International in Peckham High Street.

They made off with £1,250 after one shouted at the terrified 17-year-old female shop assistant: “This is my money, I'm taking the money, open the safe.” The victim said: “I felt scared and insecure so I left the company. I no longer felt safe in the area and was terrified to go out alone in case I saw the attackers and suffered panic attacks as a result.”

The trio all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob between February 2014 and January this year. Parle accepted involvement in six robberies and an attempted theft, Gartland accepted involvement in five robberies, an attempted robbery and an attempted theft and O'Connor accepted involvement in five robberies.

Judge Mark Lucraft QC sentenced Parle to ten years, O'Connor to twelve-

previous conviction for burglary, while O'Connor has previous for theft, driving offences, and burglary.

Last week O'Connor was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years’

central London hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

In the last twelve months there were nearly 500 reported hate crimes in the borough for race or religious reasons, compared to 341 the year before that.

Similar numbers of hate crimes were reported in Lewisham over the same period and around 150 more were reported in Lambeth.

Both suspects in this assault are described as black females aged in their twenties and police are appealing for any witnesses to now come forward.

Police release CCTV after ‘bus attack’

THE POLICE have released CCTV images of two women they want to speak to after a female bus passenger wearing a pink headscarf was punched in the head and kicked off a bus backwards in Elephant and Castle.

Officers described the incident on October 28 as a “racist and Islamophobic” attack.

As the number 63 pulled up outside Elephant and Castle underground station in London Road just after 8pm, shocked commuters saw the victim, in her forties, get pushed off the back of the bus in a

tirade of racist abuse from two women.

Bus passengers tried to hold the two women at the scene but they escaped before the police arrived.

The suspects were heard shouting abusive comments such as: “This isn’t bloody Africa” during the attack.

Passenger Antonia Bance, who called an ambulance for the victim, said her fellow “weary commuters” turned into a “crack team” after the attack as they took photos of the suspects, called the police and comforted the victim.

Police are now asking that anyone with photos or film footage of the incident get in touch with them. The victim sustained injuries as a result of the attack and was also badly shaken. She was taken to a

Council gets grant for domestic violence SOUTHWARK: Southwark Council has received £100,000 in government funding, which will be put towards supporting victims of domestic abuse.

The money will be used to improve refuge facilities in the borough, including the creation of specialised refuge spaces for disabled women, or women with disabled children.

It will also go towards helping women move on from refuge

facilities.

Councillor Michael Situ, Southwark Cabinet member for communities and safety, said: “Refuge accommodation is an important part of the package of support we offer to women who decide to flee domestic abuse perpetuators. I’m glad we now have the funding to increase the number of refuges in the borough and support those hoping to rebuild their lives further down the line.”

A SUSPECTED Camberwell crack house has been shut down after neighbours were terrorised by years of anti-social behaviour, including Class A drugs being brazenly dealt right on the doorstep, police say.

The Warner Road property was shut down after a closure order was granted at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on December 16.

It followed a long-history of drug and anti-social behaviour problems associated with the ground floor property.

PC Mark McKay, who led the operation, said: “We received complaints from residents who were in despair about the constant antisocial behaviour by the occupant and the visitors to the premises.

Neighbours were at breaking point with Class-A drugs openly being dealt on their doorsteps.

“Everyone has the right to feel safe

in their own homes and with this in mind it was important to act quickly and bring much-needed respite to residents, especially before Christmas.”

A photo taken by police from inside the property appears to show drug paraphernalia and empty alcohol bottles and cans littering the building’s front room.

The house had already been searched using drug warrants on four occasions in 2015 alone, as well as in September 2013. The evidence found during these raids was enough to shut down the building.

During the operation, the police worked with Southwark Council and Southern Housing Group, who said such teamwork was “key” in keeping communities safe.

Councillor Michael Situ, Southwark Cabinet member for communities and safety, added: “The closure of the crack house on Warner Road is an excellent result from the joint working of council officers, Southern Housing Group and the

police.

“However, without the support of local people none of this would have been possible. We need residents to continue to support our efforts to keep Southwark a safe place by reporting all crimes, no matter how big or small, to us or the police if it’s urgent and serious.”

No arrests were made and the occupant has been rehoused following work between the police and Southwark Council.

SOUTHWARK HAS been transformed this holiday season, with houses and businesses across the borough going the extra mile to get into the Christmas spirit.

Halls have been decked with boughs of holly from Bankside to Dulwich, but this year it seems that even Southwark’s pets are getting in on the festive fun.

After beautiful Bertie the cat, of Bermondsey-based charity London Persian Rescue, stole our readers’ hearts last week, we were sent a great selection of Southwark cats, dogs – and even a pony – in full festive attire.

Check out the four-legged Santas, mini Rudolphs and tinselclad mutts below - including Nala, a very special therapy dog who helps sick children at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, which is situated in Waterloo.

Nala has spent the last seven years visiting patients at the hospital, putting a smile onto the faces of the brave kids spending Christmas on a ward.

This year, a book celebrating the role of pets at the hospital called Evelina London Pets is being sold to raise funds for the hospital.

HE WEATHER during December has been astonishingly mild, and according to some news reports, the warmest for a hundred years.

Generally it has been overcast with periods of heavy rain and blustery winds.

Make the most of any dry spells and get new shrubs and trees planted. The ground is heavy going but not water logged; generally digging is out of the question for now. The colder weather usually occurs in January and February but given the unusually mild December it is difficult to know what to expect.

When planning garden or window box displays it’s not always possible to position plants in full sun. Here is a selection of shrubs and bulbs that can be planted in shadier areas either in the garden or in containers. Christmas box is a medium size evergreen shrub with year round interest. It has little white fragrant flowers from December onwards and later produces attractive blue-black berries. Photinia (Red Robin) is another evergreen shrub, its new growth produces bright red leaves. It can be used as a single specimen plant or in groups and makes an attractive hedge.

Photinia will reach about 4m but it can be pruned in spring or summer to keep it compact. Bulbs are mostly tolerant of shade for example Star of Bethlehem, Scillia and the Trillium Wood Lily flourish under trees or in spaces between shrubs.

All three flower in spring. Hostas are a group of very attractive perennial foliage plants and thrive in moist, shady areas. At this time of year they are dormant, but in spring they push up strong green tips that unfurl into beautiful leaves in a range of shapes and colours (depending on the variety). Hostas have bell shaped flowers in summer, but are grown for their foliage which is loved by slugs and snails and so suitable pest control will be needed. Some of the summer flowering perennials/annuals will tolerate shade, plants like Campanula, the old fashioned Aquilegia, Lobelia and the sweet scented Nicotiana. This year’s winter garden is not quite so dormant; there are seasonal berries on Skimmia, Holly and Cotoneaster giving a touch of colour to the overcast days. But the mild weather has encouraged spring plants into flower such as the Mexican orange blossom (usually out in May).

Rosemary is in bloom a couple of months early and roses have not stopped flowering! These blooms are now companions to the leafless trees and seasonal evergreens.

Writing’s on the wall for playgrounds

IN THE words of Sam Smith ‘The writing’s on the wall”.

Due to Tory austerity cuts Southwark council have decided to slash a further 73% from Youth Services and as a result the Play Service will go. This small council department has run and maintained the borough’s adventure playgrounds, along with many other play schemes, for the last 30 years.

Originally local community groups, using volunteer labour and scavenged materials, set up adventure playgrounds on waste land or bomb sites and these grew into local landmarks that provided amazing spaces for kids to play on.

Over the years they either got built on or Southwark took them over and ran them with a small staff team.

Generations of kids have grown up loving these playgrounds for their mad structures and swings; exciting environments without the usual rules and regulations and safer than the street. Now the Parks Department will take them over and, facing their own cuts, I can’t imagine they have the will or the means to keep them going in their present form.

Battersea adventure playground in Wandsworth used to be seen as the best in London until Wandsworth shut it down. It is now a ‘Go-Ape’ theme park and crazy golf course where a family of four have to pay over £100 to get in. So that, or more ‘affordable’ flats, is what will become of the last wild and free play spaces for children in Southwark? Or, you could email your local councillor and tell them what you think.

Ideas on how to save

SOUTHWARK IS not London’s worst council. But, I live in Southwark and I am worried where savings in the order of £100 million will be found.

Here are some ideas.

Contractors/ Building/ Construction: Save millions. Ask for commitments to support arts and welfare and libraries and transportation. Incompetent repairs, inadequate build and poor boring service and delivery gets treated with zero tolerance. Can't deliver for taxpayers? Change the contractor.

Pavements: Save £20 million.

Everywhere else in the world

Waste costs money. Spearhead a movement to make manufacturers pay for their packaging. Organic waste can go to power generators.

Parks and Cemeteries: Save £10 and more million. 20 pint sized city trees provide the oxygen one human needs each year. Parks and cemeteries are where we keep trees. They keep us alive and healthy. To pay for their management hire them out for celebrations and school trips and nature classrooms and therapy.

Sourcing material: Buy local, save and build UK industry.

Chinese Granite curb stones who thought they were a great idea?

Why not source to universities and find some amazing UK new products.

And then there’s the inevitable accounting errors on any business books. How much are they?

Get rid of waste and fraud and inefficiencies, source innovatively and locally and please don’t touch Children’s Services or schools and clubs and libraries.

Bakerloo decision is no surprise

IN SPITE of the majority of respondents being in favour of the Bakerloo Line extension from the Elephant and Castle going via Camberwell it is no surprise that their preferred option is via the Old Kent Road as it has always been the option they prefer.

They also say that it will be at least 2030 before any extension is completed, as they will build the Northern line branch to Battersea first and undertake an upgrade on the existing Bakerloo line before extending it.

In the meantime the already overcrowded Bank branch of the Northern line will get more overcrowded at rush hour than it alreedy is now.

It seems to me they want us all to ride bicycles in the heavily polluted Central London air which will laed to mre pollution cased health problems.

Stop in the name of art FRIDAY NIGHT found me in the buzzing Brixton Village supping, ale, sipping wine, tippling Bloody Marys and listening to a band called Los Muchachos that seemed to be a mad mix of folk, mariachi, soul and latino, with a pan pipe thrown in for good measure, and all while soaking up the wonderful artwork of south London artist Martin Grover, writes Michael Holland...

His Now That’s Melancholy 2 exhibition of paintings and screenprints began with a bang as fans and friends gathered to give the show a grand opening.

Grover is such a prolific painter it is difficult to keep up with his output, so it was good to catch up with some of his new work. I was excited at a new batch of Singles he is doing and saw some of the new album covers he has, er, covered.

The city he captures in his streetscapes are invariably of his local environs, but you won’t just see a moment in Norwood captured without the added aspect of a legendary soul singer making his way down the street or waiting at the bus stop, all of which makes these works that bit more special and lifts them from the mundane.

Bus stops seem to be important in Martin Grover’s work, as there is a series of them with destinations that are more a state of mind, or a song, rather than a place to get to, and in 3D, again raising something ordinary up to the extraordinary.

This artist’s work never fails to interest and intrigue and this show gives a broad look at his oeuvre.

‘NESTS OF SATAN’

AS ANY self-respecting barman will tell you, Southwark’s pubs are more than just places to sink a pint or play pool. Every bar, from the Mayflower on the banks of the Thames to the Colby Arms at the foot of the borough, is a prism through which Southwark’s social history can be viewed, writes Joey Millar...

From boxing legend Henry Cooper sparring in the Thomas A Becket to Joe Strummer of the Clash rocking the Ivy House, Southwark’s boozers have seen their fair share of famous faces and notable events.

Indeed, even a single pub can be packed with enough history to fill hundreds of pages – just ask Peter Brown, whose excellent book Shakespeare’s Local details the enthralling tales of the George Inn, which over the course of its 600-year history has counted Chaucer, Shakespeare and Charles Dickens – who was rumoured to have written a chapter of A Christmas Carol there amongst its regulars.

However, during the 16th and 17th centuries, the borough’s watering holes came under threat from the most formidable enemy of the time: the fun-loathing, pleasure-draining, perma-frowning Puritans.

Journalist Henry Mencken described Puritanism as “the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.”

Politician Thomas Macauley explained it with the quip: “The Puritans hated bear-baiting, not because it gave pain to the bear, but because it gave pleasure to the spectators.”

Both men were spot on, and during the 1500s and 1600s, Southwark’s pubs were firmly in the sights of the Puritans, who felt that the roughand-tumble boozers didn’t fit their vision of the purer world they were trying to create. They descended on the borough, where they had a higher level of support than elsewhere in the city due to the influx of Protestant immigrants fleeing persecution in Europe, and set to work. In his book, Brown says: “The Puritans saw Southwark as hell on earth, with its drinking places at the heart of the problem.” They certainly didn’t need to look far to find one, with whole streets sometimes taken up by a string of ale houses, with one for every fourteen households in the borough.

One Puritan described Southwark’s pubs, dramatically but eloquently, as “nests of Satan where the owls of impiety lurk and where all evil is hatched, and the bellows of intemperance and incontinence blow up.” Another said they were “nurseries of all riot, excess and idleness.” Regardless of the metaphor used – and, whatever their views on fun, Puritans did seem to go for metaphors in a big way - it was clear they had an issue with Southwark’s drinking problem.

culture from the inside. A new licencing act banned the playing of unlawful games, betting, drinking while church services were taking place (which, in Puritan London, took up quite a bit of time) and buying and selling goods in pubs.

Going for a swift pint or ten had suddenly become a lot less fun.

Extreme anti-prostitution laws were also introduced, targeting pubs whose back rooms doubled as brothels – a major money-spinner.

Men who were caught visiting a hooker faced three months in jail, while the women themselves would be publically stripped and flogged.

Some even pushed for prostitutes who were caught red-handed to be killed - or at least branded on their face so that everyone would be aware of “the adulterous Children of Satan.” In the end, though, pints beat purity. After a decade of power, Puritans faded to irrelevance following Charles II’s rise to the

throne. The King, known as the ‘Merry Monarch’, ruled with a jolly mentality that clashed with the Puritan spirit, who Brown notes in his book “believed that if you tapped your foot to music, you might as well just got the whole hog, rename yourself Beelzebub and have sexual intercourse with the corpse of a recently sacrificed goat.”

Charles II’s court was perhaps best described as “hedonistic”, with this tone trickling down to the masses,

who were greatly relieved after a decade of increasingly sour Puritan rules. Southwark had held out and remained Britain’s capital of debauchery.

The borough, says Brown, “was not only the dumping ground for what London didn’t want, but also for what it did want, but didn’t want to acknowledge wanting” – and that’s surely worth raising a glass to.

fter undergoing a preChristmas facelift, Herne Hill favourite the Florence is back with a vengeance and it’s looking better than ever. On a Sunday afternoon the urban country pub, opposite Brockwell Park, is heaving and I’d be willing to bet the Sunday roast has a good deal to do with this, writes Laura Burgoine...

With a brand new interior in the bar and restaurant, an extended garden space and redesigned event room, the Florence has also been a microbrewery long before the hipster craft beer craze took hold.

Boxed in with glass, the microbrewery is on full display as an eye-catching feature. The pub continues to work with local breweries, championing an extensive range of British beers on tap and by the bottle. Guest brewers, such as London locals Hop Stuff Brewery, and beers including

gluten-free Bedlam Pilsner from Brighton, Redwell Steam lager, Paxton Pale Ale from London Beer Factory and London’s only cider makers, Urban Orchard –feature among others. For those favouring grape over grain, the wine list is divided into a broad variety of favourites alongside their ‘Other’ list showcasing natural, biodynamic wine from vineyards throughout Europe.

On the weekend I visited the place was packed with Christmas parties and Sunday lunchers but spacious enough for optimum table arrangement allowing full range of elbow motion for the over-gesturing diner; a luxury many London pubs can’t afford. It’s a cosy place to retreat for a winter’s afternoon with wooden floors, exposed brick and stripped back style giving the pub a relaxed but chic vibe. The staff are excellent; friendly, efficient and accommodating. The entire establishment runs like a well-oiled machine. Within moments of sitting

down we were brought water – let’s face it, a beverage that in most public houses is usually reserved as a threat for the obnoxious intoxicated patron - followed swiftly by extra spicy Virgin Marys, garnished intricately with cherry tomatoes, celery, cucumber and gherkins.

A combination of it being the Lord’s Day and depressingly dark and dismal outside, meant a comforting hot roast was called for.

It was superb. The Suffolk roast chicken was high quality meat cooked to perfection, surrounded by fresh seasonal greens, roasted carrot, swede and potatoes, all doused in a tasty gravy. I’ve never really understood the allure of the Yorkshire pudding when the roast potato already shines as an irreplaceable sidekick. But, these Yorkshire puddings, as large as your hand, were pretty spectacular, dissolving on the tongue in a buttery, crispy mouthful. My dining companion enjoyed a tender roast

rump of beef before finishing off the chicken that I couldn’t; the Florence dishes up very generous servings and I was adamant that dessert was not to be missed.

I implore you to resist the urge of gorging too much on the main dish and leave room for dessert. My dining companion went for a warm, treacle-laden sticky date pudding with ice-cream while I ventured a bread and butter pudding for the first time ever, forcing me -upon the first spoonful - to question how I’ve travelled this far on the road of life without encountering a bread and butter pudding. Deliciously light and spongey and soaking in delicious vanilla bean custard, it’s the best pudding I’ve had in a long, long time.

Everyone in the know is well aware of the Florence’s merits; locals welcomed it back like it was a family member returning from war.

One visit, one roast chicken and three potatoes later and I’m well and truly won over.

Stansfeld finished 2015 with a stylish win demolishing Hildenborough Athletic 5-0 to stretch their current winning streak to four games.

Sam Ryan helped himself to a hat-trick on the day with the Bermondsey sides leading marksmen this season Billy Shinners also chipping in with two goals.

Hildenborough's only real chance came when some indecision in the Stansfeld defence allowed them to get a shot off from close range.

But James Bradley in the Stansfeld goal managed to smother that effort with a smart save.

Stansfeld Reserves won 4-2 on penalties, after extra-time finished 1-1, at home to Bexliains in the Hospital Charity Cup. Dominic Karmali scored the Stansfeld goal that didn’t come in the shoot out.

Scannell nets a dramatic winner for Hamlet against Grays

That initiative was rewarded when a Scannell free-kick evaded all and sundry in the penalty area and bounced into the net as the clocked ticked into time added on.

Hamlet should have been behind at half time but had keeper Phil Wilson to thank for saving a spot kick that was conceded when Ryan Moss was found to be over exuberant in his own area.

On Tuesday night Billericay Town missed a chance to take top spot in the Ryman Premier League when their game against Grays was postponed. Hamlet will therefore sit top of the table at Christmas.

Dulwich played Corinthian Casuals in the London Cup on the same evening winning the second round contest 4-1. Ryan Moss bagged a hattrick and Albert Jarrett also netted.

In their final match before the Christmas break Southwark Legends U14 Boys basketball team claimed their third win in a row by defeating Kennington Generals 32-23 in the Community Basketball League

The Legends started the brighter of the two sides with guard Tariq Ocan catching the eye with a team high personal tally of twelve points, whilst Paul Yussuf put in another consistent performance at both ends of the floor to finish with ten points.

Despite the Generals going on a scoring run late in the game the

Peckham side converted some timely baskets to ensure that they went home with the victory.

After the game Ocan said, “I think we played well, we passed the ball well on offence but we could have played better on defence.”

The goal just before half time means the Black and Whites now enjoy an eight point advantage over the Bromley team, who occupy the solitary relegation spot in the Southern Counties East Football League.

Fisher had the opportunity to make life easier for themselves in the second period at the weekend but a missed spot kick meant the scoreline remained tight until the final whistle.

The sending off of Alfie Nunn did little to settle the nerves of the Fisher faithful but the Bermondsey side were not to be denied a critical victory.

Over the Christmas and New Year break the Fish are in action twice commencing with an away game at Beckenham Town on Boxing Day, a game that kicks off at 3pm.

Their first game of 2016 is at home on January 2 when Rochester United come to Champion Hill, again a game that gets underway at 3pm.

he City of London boys’ basketball side came from behind on Sunday as they defeated the Kennington Generals 34-30 in the Community Basketball League {CBL}.

Trailing by nine points at the halfway mark a comeback led by Michael Asaolu and

Damilare Adedeji, rounded off by the scoring of Kavel Hawes, saw the under sixteen team steal a victory from their nearby rivals.

Asaolu, named most valuable player in the game, said: “Basketball teaches you to never give up and keep fighting until the end because hard work and persistence always

pays off.

“It doesn't matter how you start. It's how you finish that counts.”

Den Boss looks back on 2015 and outlines aims for the new year

NEIL HARRIS was in reflective mood ahead of the Lions’ Boxing Day game as 2015 comes to a close.

The Lions manager has had a “whirlwind” year by his own admission after being appointed the permanent manager back in March.

And Harris has said he is still enjoying the challenge of working with his players, insisting progression is what he is aiming for in 2016.

“It has been whirlwind year for me,” Harris said. “Going from coaching the Under 21s to managing the first team, but it’s about progression for me, for the club, and for the squad.

“We’ve adjusted a lot in a short space of time and put a lot of demand on people to improve quickly. It’s changing the mindset of a football

club.

“It’s a challenge but it’s a good one and one I’m really enjoying.

“We have to progress again and take another step forward and have to keep improving as a squad, keep improving the young players, demanding more from the senior players, and hopefully that takes us into the top six and progress further into a cup competition that we want to win.”

With progression the aim, Harris looked back on how his team have fared so far this season and said things were looking up, but the Lions manager is under no illusions that his side still have some way to go.

But the Den boss admitted when his team click, they are one of the best teams in Sky Bet League One. “I love working with this group of players,” Harris said. “There is so much potential there. MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris could be tempted to make some changes to his first eleven after his side's poor recent form.

The Lions have lost four of their last six games in all competitions and have frustratingly let a number of recent opportunites to move into League One's top six slip.

Harris had some stern words for his players after Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home to Gillingham, indicating that he wasn't happy with their preparation and that if they don't show the same level of seriousness in training that he did as a player they would be shipped out.

“We have ourselves in a decent position that’s really good for us after the first half of the season.

“I’m really philosophical about it, and I think most people are - we've still got a long way to go. The Gillingham defeat was a reality check to how far we have to go.

“I’ve said to the players, we've played some good teams this year: when we've been at it, we are one of the best teams in the division. I think that’s quite easy to say.

“We can compete with the best teams, we just have to do it more consistently - when we did it over a nine game period, we were unbeaten.

We just have to find that consistency again.”

Harris added: “We certainly have to make sure we win the majority of the games, that’s the key.

“As long as you amass a certain amount of wins and points, that’s all that matters.

“It helps taking the points off the

teams above, it helps them gaining points and moving ahead and that’s something I've looked at.

“The teams above us, or in the top six where we've not won, it’s something we need to address, we need to go into those games being mentality stronger, against the good sides you can’t switch off for a moment, let alone three or four minutes in a game.

“That’s certainly been a trait of ours over a period of time at this club.

“When we've had a quiet few minutes, we concede a goal, and that’s something we thought we had extinguished in the last couple of months.

“We've worked really hard and we will continue to work hard - losing that isn't something I want to come back into our play.”

As Burton had before them when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink departed for QPR, Walsall lost their manager, Dean Smith, to a Championship club when he joined Brentford last month.

The Saddlers appointed Sean O'Driscoll, who was most recently assistant manager to Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, in Smith's place and he led the side to a 2-0 win over Port Vale in his first match in charge to extend Walsall's unbeaten run to five games in all competitions.

“It’s a brilliant one for us,” Harris explained. “A tough one, they’re a good team, they have a couple of really good loan players - they are a real good side.

“They were good in spells against Port Vale and I saw them against Chesterfield also, they’ll be a proper challenge for us. They have some strong attacking players so it’s a good one for my boys!

“The players have to react, it'll be a tough afternoon - there will be another good crowd at The Den, another crowd there to enjoy watching their team play.

“I’m expecting a reaction. Every time I've asked for a reaction this season, I’ve got one - and I’ll expect nothing less on Boxing Day. “It’ll be down to how we perform, if we perform to our ability, then, I expect us to win any game of football.

“It’s about us and we will focus on that leading up to the game.”

That will have to change if their hopes of promotion are to still be genuine when the season enters its crucial stages.

They have had injuries and suspensions to contend with, but the manner of the goals they conceded against Gillingham when clear individual errors and lapses in concentration cost them reflected the defensive raggedness from earlier in the season that seemed to have been eradicated when they went nine games unbeaten in September and October.

Millwall have already conceded 31 goals this season. When they won promotion from this division in 2009-10 they let in 44 in total.

Clearly, a renewed focus on defensive stability is required.

Lions midfielder fit again and eager to contribute to the Millwall cause over the festive period

WITH A bumper fixture list just around the corner, it is the perfect time for midfielder Jimmy Abdou to return to the first team after the longest injury lay off in his career.

The Lions stalwart was forced off in the 5-3 defeat to Peterborough back in October and has missed over two months of action since undergoing surgery on his collarbone that was dislocated within the first five minutes during the defeat to Posh.

Now, fourteen games later and after an upturn in Millwall’s form - only

losing three in that time - Abdou is back in contention to prove himself to manager Neil Harris, as he aims to be a part of the relentless Christmas fixtures.

And Abdou has said he isn't feeling any adverse effects since returning to the bench in last Saturday’s defeat to Gillingham, and is looking forward to getting back playing.

“My collarbone is all good, I feel fine” Abdou said. “It was a long couple of months on the side. I’m feeling OK and happy to come back.

“It was the worst injury that I have had in my whole career, so it was tough. I tried to do my rehab as well as I could to come back stronger.

“The staff and the physio have all helped me to do that and I think I did well during my spell out to get back

fit again.

“Hopefully now, I can come back and pick up where I left off.

“I think you just have to accept injuries, that’s football and it happens. I accepted it and I tried to do everything right to come back stronger and hopefully that has worked.”

Despite being a staunch fans’ favourite, Abdou is under no illusions that he is guaranteed to go straight back into the starting XI. “I have to prove myself again,” Abdou said. “The team has been outstanding since I got injured and they've all done really well.

“I was watching games and enjoying them - now I have to prove to the manager that I’m ready to come back and play again.

“I’m available now, I will always do what I can for the team and now I just have wait and see what the manager’s choice is and I will be ready for that.

“We have a lot of games coming up, we need everyone - and they all know that, we can’t rely on individuals.

“Even in my experience, you need to give a little bit extra for the team over the Christmas period, but we will get through it, as a team, and perform all together.”

The Lions are currently 11th in League one, but sit three points off the play-off places, with a game in hand over their rivals.

And the Comoros captain feels his side are “on course” to achieve their ultimate aim of promotion, despite

the midfielder believing more needs to be given in order to achieve the aforementioned aim.

“It all depends on us” Abdou explained. “If we want to go as far as we can - we need to perform well and now we are halfway through the season and on course; we want to get better and we will hopefully do that.

“After a difficult start we managed to improve. When I was out, the team performed very well and they were playing really well.

“They found a balance and had some good results. When you see that you think things are ok, but it isn't enough for what we want really want to achieve. Hopefully throughout the rest of the season, we can do better.”

ILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris admitted his side had given themselves a mountain to climb after a disastrous first half at The Den last Saturday, and when Dominic Samuel scored the third goal a minute from time it was as if to plant a Gillingham flag on the summit.

Most of the damage was done in a ragged opening 25 minutes.

Jordan Archer will now be suspended for Walsall’s visit to SE16 on Boxing Day after the first red card of his career.

The incident that led to Darren Handley sending off the goalkeeper had been foreshadowed minutes earlier when it looked like contact with Archer’s leg was the reason Samuel was sent sprawling in the box.

David Forde revealed afterwards Millwall boss Neil Harris turned to him on the bench at that point to tell him to get ready to come on.

But Handley surprised most of those watching by booking the striker for simulation.

That yellow card seemed to spur on rather than shake the striker, and he gave Gillingham a deserved lead in the 20th minute when he got in front of Mark Beevers to nod the superb Bradley Dack’s free-kick past Archer.

Five minutes later Samuel was accelerating at Millwall’s back four to prod a pass towards Cody McDonald.

Mark Beevers, having heard Archer’s call, left the ball when hindsight would have offered a better perspective, and McDonald nipped in before being clattered by the goalkeeper.

Forde, making his first appearance in the league since August, went the wrong way as Dack rammed the spot-kick straight down the middle.

Ed Upson had been the one to make way for Forde with Millwall now in a 4-3-2 formation and when Shane Ferguson came on for former Gills leftback Joe Martin at the break that became a 3-4-2 when the Lions had the ball.

Harris was pleased afterwards his side “had a go” after the break and they could and should have pulled at least a goal back.

Aiden O’Brien was denied twice in quick succession by Stuart Nelson, who then saved from point-blank range when Lee Gregory seemed certain to score.

Instead, it was another defensive shocker that allowed Gillingham score a third in the 89th minute. Byron Webster failed to deal adequately with Nelson’s long punt forward and Samuel was able to reach the defender’s attempted backpass before Forde to score his second from a tight angle.

The most recent case of a surge in form came during the 2009-10 season, when Kenny Jackett’s

men won promotion from League One via the play-offs.

In that season, after the Boxing Day defeat to Norwich, Jackett’s men would only lose three out of 26 games to secure promotion to the Championship.

And Harris is hoping that it will be his turn to oversee a Millwall upturn in form as the season rumbles on, having challenged his players to eclipse former squads.

“I spoke to the players and during training they need to focus and concentrate, and ask ourselves: what do we want to achieve as a team and as a club?

“If they want to achieve what I want to achieve and that’s to be better every day and be the best player on the training pitch every day in training, to win every game of football, then their

mentality and character has to be right.

“That is their challenge and that’s my expectation levels and that’s the standard they have set at times this season, and now I'm demanding it every day!

“It’s not talking about what has worked for us in the past, it’s about what the players can achieve now.

“We've done it in the past because of our mentality and belief, and that’s what this group of players have to have this time around.”

The winger joined The Gas back in November and made three appearances, one of which was from the bench.

And Lions boss Neil Harris felt the system deployed by the Rovers boss was what hampered the 25-year-old’s chances of playing minutes, in a bid to come back to SE16 in the new year having got the necessary playing time.

“The reason he went to Bristol in the first place was to play some football,” Harris said. “Paris went there for six or seven games and only had one start because they play a 3-5-2 formation, which hasn't suited Paris’ style of play, so he has been involved coming off the bench.

“Darrell Clarke said he wasn't going to start on Boxing Day so we thought, rather being there at Christmas, he should be a part of our squad and come back to us.

“The main aim was for Paris to go out to get minutes and find rhythm to his game. That didn't happen. So we will assess his fitness as to whether he can be included over the Christmas period.

“It will be good experience, however, for him to have gone to Bristol and play for a different club. If we send our players out on loan, it’s for one reason and that’s to play football.”
