Let disabled people know about all changes

F

OR A disabled person who relies on equipment to do basic things, news that provision is being cut from the council’s budget will terrify them, so it is vital that they are aware what changes if any are happening.

If you rely on a hoist to be moved from A to B, or to go to the toilet, then the very idea that this provision could be cut or moved to another provider without you knowing would send you into a panic.

The story this week that £900,000 will be saved from the council budget by asking the NHS to take over provision of home equipment will inevitably worry carers and more importantly those being cared for.

With £47 million worth of government cuts imposed on Southwark Council between 2016-19, it is not an illogical step to make this saving, given the fact that it has no statutory obligation to provide the equipment. Indeed if the NHS under Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group can take on that responsibility then so be it. But it is paramount that these vulnerable people are constantly informed and assured that their equipment will remain and be serviced even if funding for it has changed.

Disabled people are capable of making decisions and understanding that in these times of massive cutbacks things might change. But unlike an able bodied person they cannot wait around for a new organisation to get grips with those changes. If the change in funding is going to result in any delays on updating users’ records, servicing equipment, or providing equipment, then that disabled person needs advance warning so they can make sure they are not literally left stuck. One of the biggest frustrations with being disabled is not being able to do everything as easy as you could when you are able bodied. It takes extra planning – a disabled person has to be more resourceful, but they cannot do that if they are not informed.

It is all well and good to promise that services will not be affected. In fact Cllr Richard Livingstone, who has the difficult task of making ends meet, told us: “We can of course never categorically rule out reduction in funding for services, as we are under immense financial pressure with year on year cuts to budgets and growing demand. We will always communicate any major changes to residents as soon as we are aware of the potential for them to happen.”

But alarm bells are obviously already ringing when clearly the Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group - based in the council’s Tooley Street headquarters are still requesting details about taking over the provision.

Some might accuse this paper of scaremongering, as there has been no announcement that there will be cuts to home equipment. But we are putting our flag down for the people using the equipment to say – let us know sooner rather than later.

A GREAT-grandmother and her friends have been left struggling to catch their regular bus after the shelter was moved 20 feet away from the actual stop.

Lil Hosier, 72, often catches the number 78 from a bus stop on Dunton Road, near Willow Walk, in Bermondsey, to go shopping with friends.

But the pensioner said she had recently experienced buses hurtling past before she even had time to get to her feet, after TfL decided to move the bus shelter 20 feet away from the stop.

Lil said there used to be a bus shelter nearer the stop, but it was recently replaced with a new shelter set back from the pavement against a brick wall.

“I know TfL wants us pensioners to get up and moving but to have to move 20 feet to get the bus means the bus just goes straight past”

“I’ve been using this bus stop for ages but they moved the shelter about eight weeks ago,” said Lil, who suffers from osteoporosis.

“If you sit in the bus shelter you don’t see the bus coming. If you get up and put your hand out it goes straight past and doesn’t stop because you are at the shelter, but not the actual bus stop. There are about two or three of us at a time who sit at the bus stop chatting and then the bus just goes past.

place as the shelter at first – but soon realised this would not be the case.

“We are all over 70 – a couple of my friends are over 80 and one of them is over 90 – and we all use trolleys,” she

added.

“I know TfL wants us pensioners to get up and moving, but to have to move 20 feet to get the bus means the bus just goes straight past.”

A spokesperson for TfL said: “We are very sorry to hear about this experience and we are trying to get the situation sorted out as quickly as possible.”

MPs taking the fight for school to the top EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK’S MPS were due to meet with schools minister Nick Gibb this week – amid reports of headteachers having to cut staff, courses, books, and even the quality of school meals.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, and Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, were all to meet Nick Gibb yesterday (Wednesday, March 22) to discuss the national school funding formula and make the case for Southwark schools.

Schools in the borough are predicted to be the worst hit by the

Government’s national funding formula, with estimates of cuts of £1,024 per pupil per year.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s meeting, Mr Coyle said: “The idea that things are hunky-dory is a misunderstanding.

“Even before these cuts come through schools have recruitment and retainment issues, pupil and class size growth, and of course all of the additional new costs such as pension contribution and the apprenticeship levy which they can’t say no to.

“They have to make cuts even to keep things level. I’ve visited a school which has had a reduction in its budget for the last five years so things are already treading water and then I have schools telling me they’ve already cut some courses. Classes will be cut, assistants cut, teachers cut, and as the

more experienced teachers leave, they will be replaced with less experience staff.”

Mr Coyle said Southwark’s education system had gone from one of the worst-performing in the country to one of the best.

“It took thirteen years of investment to turn around Southwark education,” he said.

“That is not an accident: it took years of investment, resources, and partnership work between the local authority, individual schools, teachers, governors, and of course parents and children. The Government wants to turn back the tide unless we come out of that meeting and the consultation response and see significant change.”

Helen Hayes has written to Education Secretary Justine Greening highlighting the dire circumstances

some schools in Southwark have been faced with, including cuts to books, extracurricular activities – and even quality school food.

“These cuts equate to significant numbers of teaching and support staff, as well as cuts in the materials, books, IT resources, extra-curricular activities and quality of school food,” she said in a letter.

“Headteachers in my constituency are reporting being unable to afford to replace teaching assistants and teachers who have left, struggling to afford classroom materials and not having the funds to undertake repairs and redecoration works.

“They are also clear that, coming on top of these additional, unfunded costs, the cuts which would result from the schools funding formula would make the situation even more precarious.

“Such large cuts would have to fall on staffing budgets, and my local schools would have to lose teachers and support staff in order to balance their books.”

Mr Coyle was also due to meet Employment Minister Damian Hinds with Southwark organisation Good People and the South Bank Employers’ Group on Wednesday.

“We’re meeting to talk about young people in particular because even though the employment rate looks very good on paper, we’ve actually still got a higher than average youth unemployment and underemployment issues that organisations like Good People are helping to tackle,” said Mr Coyle.

A public consultation on the national school funding formula ran until March 22.

Special needs schools moved to make way for homes

A PAIR of Southwark special schools could be moved to make way for more than 170 new homes.

The site of Beormund Primary School, in Long Lane, and the adjacent Porlock Hall pupil referral unit could provide space for 123 new homes as part of the council's 'regeneration in partnership programme’.

The special school, which currently accommodates 35 full-time primary

pupils with social, emotional and mental health issues, could be moved to a new purpose-built building at the Bellenden Primary School site, in Peckham.

Bellenden Primary is expanding to a new purpose-built two form entry school in the nearby Dewar Street in 2018, therefore the site will become vacant.

Cherry Garden School – a special school in Macks Road – is set to move to a new building at the former Highshore School site in Bellenden Road to allow for 50 homes to be built on the Bermondsey site.

In 2015, the News reported that the former Highshore School building in Bellenden Road, which had stood empty since the school relocated to Camberwell in 2013, would be knocked down to make way for the new development.

The council’s proposals to move the schools to new buildings in order to build much-needed properties to tackle the housing crisis were to be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening (March 21).

The proposals are expected to provide much-needed additional places for children with special

educational needs and disabilities in Southwark.

Teresa Neary, headteacher at Cherry Garden School, said: “We are excited about moving to such a vibrant community and are very keen to develop strong partnerships within the local community.

“The facilities on the new site will be amazing, with hydropool, fullsized trampoline room, specialist rooms and sensory playground areas with tree houses.

“We will be able to take up to 85 pupils which will enable us to make provision for a wider range of need.

“We will continue to support pupils with complex needs including pupils on the autistic spectrum. However, there will be increased provision for SLD/MLD pupils in Key Stage 2 and a large early years department with some pupils on assessment placements.

“We will also continue to maintain a satellite class which will be based at Cherry Garden.”

In July 2013 the council pledged to build a total of 11,000 new homes over a 30-year period, and in July pledged to deliver 1,500 of those homes by 2018.

IRRESPONSIBLE DOG owners who don’t clear up their pets’ poo could face fixed-penalty notices of up to £100, under new proposals from Southwark Council.

A host of new dog-related regulations could see hounds excluded from children’s play areas; a four-dogs-per-person limit in One Tree Hill; and on-leads-at-all-times rules for Nunhead Cemetery and both Camberwell Old and New cemeteries.

Southwark’s cabinet members agreed on Tuesday that a six-week consultation would be launched next month to gauge residents’ views on the proposals.

In a statement before the meeting, councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities and safety, said some residents had concerns “with regards to dog related antisocial behaviour (ASB) and irresponsible dog ownership”.

Currently the council has legal power to prosecute residents who commit ASB with their dogs.

But Southwark wants to introduce Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), and give its park wardens the power to dish out fines to dog owners who “persistently offend” and “behave irresponsibly”.

In a report made before Tuesday’s meeting, it was said that there were five incidents of dogs attacking people in the borough between

October 2015 and September 2016, and one case of a dog attacking a council officer.

In that period, there were 12,686 cases of officers having to clear dog mess from public parks, and 136 recorded cases of dogs seen without a lead, in ‘dogs-on-leads areas’.

However PSPOs are orders that affect what all members of the public are allowed to do with an area of land, whereas Asbos were placed to prevent specific individuals from doing certain actions.

The new PSPOs would also replace Dog Control Orders, which are in place at the Aylesbury Estate and One Tree Hill.

BOXING CHAMPION Lloyd Honeyghan is one of seven Walworth legends to be commemorated in the new 147home Harvard Gardens development.

The boxer, who worked on East Street market as a teen to save up for boxing equipment, was joined by his family on Friday at the opening ceremony, where he cut the ribbon on the “Honeyghan” block.

Lloyd is one of seven SE17 legends to get blocks and streets named after them on the development, which is the latest phase in the Aylesbury Estate redevelopment.

The list of honourees was drawn up by Walworth locals, after they participated in the 2011 Put it on the Map local history project.

The project aimed to get local residents involved in renaming buildings and streets in their area, with the Aylesbury redevelopment meaning old street patterns would be lost.

Lloyd, who says his motto is “born in Jamaica. Built in Bermondsey”, took up boxing at Fisher Amateur Boxing Club aged eleven.

He had an almost unbeaten record during his career, with just five losses compared to 43 wins.

“When they told me about it [the block], I couldn’t believe someone would build a building and put my name on it. I still can’t believe it!” said the 56-year-old.

“I grew up in this area and I have really good memories coming back here,” he said. “I believe Southwark is the best borough in London.”

Lloyd’s sister Jessie Honeyghan said that she was “humbled” by Friday’s ceremony.

“I’m humbled that people consider my brother to be part of such a wonderful regeneration project. It’s remarkable!”

Prince Monolulu, the exuberant racing tipster who was often seen at East Street Market selling his horse tips to local people, also has a building named after him.

His grandson, Peter Granwe, made the 1,200 mile trip from his native Sweden to be at Friday’s ceremony.

REVEREND JOHN MARKHAM Rector of St Peter’s Church in Walworth, the crypt of which was used as a shelter for people in the area. He received a British Empire Medal at the end of the war.

A MAN in his 20s has been recovering in hospital after being stabbed in a Blackfriars playground.

The man was knifed at Nelson Square at about 1.20pm on Sunday, March 19.

The area was cordoned off by police following the incident as officers investigated.

Over 1100 drivers get refund from council over bus lane fines error

OVER 1,100 drivers have been refunded after Southwark Council mistakenly fined them for driving in a bus lane in Dog Kennel Hill, East Dulwich.

The council has been voluntarily refunding the drivers to the cost of £29,665.

The fines were issued to drivers caught out by the bus lane camera that was set up in October, which surveys the bus lane in the northbound carriageway, past the junction with Sainsbury’s.

The error was made because the camera’s signage said it was 24/7, but should only have been operating between 7am to 7pm.

Malcolm Young, 70, from Herne Hill, told the News he had been fined £65.

“It was two-thirds of my pension,” Malcolm said.

“There never used to be camera there. Most people just respect the bus lane anyway. It’s highway robbery – just a way for them to make money.”

Another resident of Dog Kennel Hill who did not wish to be named, told the News he had been refunded for fives fines. The delivery driver, who lived on the hill for 28 years, said: “They put this camera up in October with no warning whatsoever.

“I’ve had five tickets, but there were all for going in the bus lane around 10pm.

“I phoned the council [on March 16] and they said I would be paid back within fourteen days, but that was after I had received a letter from them three weeks ago to tell me about this.”

Ballet school raises barre high in £6m push for new home

A BALLET school is hoping to raise £6million in a final push to fund its new home near Bankside.

However, the News was told by Southwark Council on Tuesday that all affected drivers had been refunded.

“Everyone who was incorrectly issued with a penalty notice has either had it cancelled or their money refunded if they had already paid,” said councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment and public realm.

“We did get the signage wrong and I apologise to anyone who was incorrectly issued with a penalty notice.

“The signs originally stated that the bus lane is controlled 24 hours when in fact it is controlled between 7am and 7pm – this signage has now been amended accordingly.”

In total, 1,193 fines were issued incorrectly. The council has confirmed the error was unique to Dog Kennel Hill, and no other buslane cameras were affected.

Central School of Ballet announced a campaign on Tuesday, March 21, to raise the final funds needed for its new Paris Gardens premises.

With £3million already raised towards the cost of the project, the new building is planned to be finished in the academic year 2018/2019.

At nearly three times the size of the space available in Central’s current home, the £6million is needed to fund a state-of-the-art health suite providing psychology, nutrition, physiotherapy, Pilates and a recovery from injury programme at the new premises.

The building will also include seven studios, a fully-equipped studio

theatre, study and resource centres.

The Countess of Wessex, patron of Central School of Ballet, said: “This is a momentous time in Central’s history. Their planned move to Paris Gardens will allow a greater engagement with young people who don’t currently get access to dance classes, building on their activities with junior schools in Southwark.”

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, added: “The school is 35 years young and already makes a fantastic contribution to dancers’ lives – producing some of the best young dancers in the country.

“They will also be contributing massively to my local community; offering facilities to local residents interested in after-work dance classes for example. I look forward to working closely together and am proud to have the school choose Southwark as their new home.”

Herne Hill favourite re-opens four years after freak flood

FOUR YEARS after a freak flood, Herne Hill’s favourite watering hole has reopened its doors.

Locals packed into the Half Moon pub on Monday, with new owners Fullers at its helm.

Peter Blair, who kick-started a campaign in 2015 to get the old boozer back on its feet, told the News he was “extremely pleased” to see it in full glow.

“I was just walking past one day, and thought it was just such a waste that it was still closed,” Peter, 55, said.

“I started knocking on doors, and asking locals for support. And we set up a stall in the local market.”

During that time, the pub saw off squatters and an attempt by its freeholder, The Dulwich Estate, to turn it into flats.

Despite being championed by the Herne Hill Forum, with support from over 1,000 residents and the likes of

Peter and Mary Blair at the Half Moon pub's reopening (main); and Matt Dutson, pub manager

likes of comedian Jo Brand, actor Mark Rylance and food critic Jay Rayner, campaigners were unable to convince owners Fullers to let it stay as a music venue, which in its past had been played by U2 and Eric Clapton.

Launderette damaged after boiler room fire

A LAUNDERETTE was left partially damaged after a fire broke out in the boiler room.

One fire engine was called from Dockhead and one from Deptford after a fire broke out at a launderette on Jamaica Road at about 6.56pm on Wednesday, March 16.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said there were no injuries and the fire was under control by 7.50pm.

“Five per cent of the boiler room was damaged by fire,” he told the News.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

THE MANAGER of a Peckhambased charity project hopes to set up a ‘one-stop shop’ offering support and advice to vulnerable women.

Katie Kelly, manager of the Moving On programme at charity Pecan, plans to launch a female-only hub where women and girls with complex needs, including issues of domestic abuse and involvement with the criminal justice system, can go for help.

Moving On helps women who are either in or coming out of prison to settle back into the community – but Katie wants to do something to prevent them from getting caught up in the criminal justice system in the first instance.

“There’s a massive connection between women and girls who experience violence and go on to commit crimes,” said Katie. “We are keen to do something at the preventative end of that.

“We are trying to set up a bit of a onestop shop for vulnerable women with complex needs, but with a longer term vision of it being a place where women in the community can meet.

“It would be a place where women can come and get all of their needs addressed in one place; maybe the need for housing advocacy or support with parenting or substance abuse or mental health.

“At the moment there’s nowhere in

Southwark where women can go and all of those things are in one place.”

Katie said her real vision was to create a resourcing centre for all women in Southwark and to become good at knowing what support was available in the borough and to help co-ordinate it.

“We wouldn’t take the place of any of the agencies that already exist in Southwark such as Solace, Bede House, Victim Support, and Rape Crisis, but if someone reported to Solace and they were working with them around their domestic violence they could refer them to the hub afterwards,” she said.

The team would need about £65,000 to get off the ground and open for two days a week – but Katie would like the hub to be open every day.

So far, Pecan has £20,000 worth of funding for the hub committed and has

bids into the MoJ and the Tampon Tax which would cover the rest of the money if secured. “If we get that funding, we could start very quickly,” said Katie.

Katie was recently a panellist at a Violence Against Women and Girls event held at the Beormund Centre, in Bermondsey, on March 9.

The event, organised by Leanne Werner, women's officer for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Labour, aimed to increase awareness of violence against women and girls. Other panellists to appear alongside Katie and Leanne were Councillor Radha Burgess, who launched the country’s first Women’s Safety Charter; activist Sarian Kamara, founder of Keep the Drums Lose the Knife, who gave a first-hand account of her experience of female genital mutilation (FGM); and Fiona Twycross of London Assembly.

LAMBETH AND Southwark could be merged into one Met Police command unit, depending on the success of two pilot schemes being rolled out in north London.

Monday saw the release of the Met’s Crime 2017-2021 Police and Crime Plan, which said: “the Met Police Service (MPS) is trialling a model of fewer, larger command units covering more than one borough.

“The aim of this approach is to improve response to crime that crosses Borough boundaries, reduce the amount the MPS spends on management and maximise the amount we can spend on frontline policing such as neighbourhood teams and 999 response.

“The larger command units also bring together specialist officers into larger, more locally based teams, strengthening their capacity to investigate serious crimes and support victims.”

The two pilot schemes will see mergers of three outer-London boroughs (Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge) and a second merger of two inner-London boroughs (Islington and Camden).

If successful, and rolled out across London, the overall number of borough commands could go from 32 to twelve.

It is thought that Lambeth and Southwark would link-up and share one borough commander.

Greenwich, Lambeth and Bexley could also become one unit.

It was said in the Police and Crime Plan that the mergers could help The Met with its ambition “that back office costs are reduced to fifteen per cent of the MPS’ overall expenditure”.

But Lambeth and Southwark’s London Assembly Member, Florence Eshalomi, labelled the proposals “a cost cutting exercise that we don’t want”.

“What’s the response rate going to be for places like Streatham and Dulwich, if all the police could end up being concentrated into the middle of the two boroughs, in Brixton and Peckham

where there are higher crime rates?”

Florence said.

“Lambeth and Southwark always come up in the top three for the boroughs with the highest crime rates.

It feels rushed a bit, and a lot of people don’t know about it. It would be a big change.”

Florence has signed a joint letter with Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes and two Lambeth MPs to Met commissioner Cressida Dick.

The letter reads: “We are very concerned about the impact that this significant change will have on our communities and on the effectiveness of policing in Lambeth.”

It adds that the results of the pilot of the scheme in north London should not be used as a basis for rolling out the merger scheme here, saying “neither of these areas are similar or reflective to the policing challenges that are apparent in Lambeth and Southwark”.

Southwark’s borough commander, Simon Messinger, was approached for comment, but was not available.

The News contacted Scotland Yard for a comment but received no response by the time of going to press.

Correction - Albion Primary School LAST WEEK the News reported on plans to build housing on part of the grounds of Albion Primary School, in Southwark.

We would like to correct some innacuracies in the article.

We would like to clarify that the school’s current is not to be entirely given over for the planned housing development. The layout of the new school will provide at ground level as

much play space as the original building including a multi-use games area and, in addition, a learning area/play space on the roof.

Also, we reported that, once completed, the school will have an additional 420 pupils. There will in fact be around 90 more places than the school currently has.

Plans have been available for some time on the school website.

LOCAL NHS bosses have ‘requested details’ of the council’s plans to cut provision of specialist equipment for disabled people.

The council revealed in its 2017-18 budget that £900,000 will be saved by asking the NHS to take over provision of home equipment.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark Coiuncil’s cabinet member for adult services and financial inclusion, said equipment services was chosen for cutting, because the council has no statutory obligation to provide equipment such as wheelchairs, stair lifts, hoists and wet rooms, that can be adapted to residents’ homes.

With a raft of further spending changes coming in April – following £47m of government cuts between 2016-19 – the News has spoken to service users who say they have not had any warning of changes to their services.

The Liberal Democrats criticised the council for not discussing these plans with Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the NHS body which makes spending decisions in the borough. This was despite the fact that the CCG has its offices in the council’s Tooley Street headquarters.

The question of whether the council communicated its plans with the CCG was first raised at an Overview and Scrutiny meeting on January 30, by Southwark Lib Dems leader Anood Al-Samerai. But it was not directly answered by Cllr Livingstone, who heads the department for adult care.

The question was again raised at a Full Council meeting on February 22

by Cllr Al-Samerai, with no definitive answer given.

A spokesperson from Southwark CCG told the News: “Further to the council's agreement of its 2017/18 budget, the CCG has requested details of the local authority's plans to reduce expenditure across a number of areas, including equipment services.

“Community equipment is funded by the CCG and the local authority in line with their respective responsibilities, and managed through joint arrangements.

“NHS Southwark CCG is committed to working with the council to find joint solutions that minimise the impact of these financial pressures on local residents.”

But the CCG said it did not wish to comment, when asked what date it had learnt of the council’s plans to shoulder the £900,000 over to it. The CCG also declined to answer whether it would commit to filling the £900,000 gap.

AN ELDERLY Bermondsey couple who have looked after their disabled son for over twenty years have made an emotional plea for councils December 2016, months before the council’s plans were made public.

Under a heading called ‘Approach to budget setting in Southwark’, within the report, it said: “We have little opportunity to invest as freely as we have been able to in the last few years”.

Meanwhile there are questions unanswered about how frontline services could be affected by the council’s £375,000 cut to its budget for transport services.

The News has been shown a statement provided to the Lib Dems

by David Quirke-Thornton as its new Strategic Director of Children’s and Adults Services, which suggests that

across the country to do more for carers.

Pat Duke, 80, and her husband Syd, 82, have been 24/7 carers for their son Mark, 58, ever since an service users will be urged to claim Disability Living Allowance benefits from the government to pay for their transport needs.

“Where there is not a statutory duty to provide transport but there is a need, then we will be ensuring people are claiming mobility allowance that they are entitled to and applying that to pay for their transport, or using motorbility vehicles for the transport of those for whom the vehicle is provided,” Mr Quirke-Thornton said.

Cllr Livingstone told the News that the council’s spend on adult social care would see a net increase of £6m for this financial year, afforded by the government’s mandatory three per

“Due to very significant government cuts to our budget, we cannot subsidise NHS provision of services or equipment. There is no transfer of service, we are working closely with the CCG to look at which services can feasibly come from which budget and mitigating impact together. Mark has had several adaptations to his flat, including a through-floor lift that allows him to get upstairs, and a hoist that helps get around the first floor, and a wet-room.

They were afforded by a grant from Home Improvement, an agency run by the council, that puts £20,000 towards Mark’s equipment after the family put in £17,000.

Any work needed to have the equipment serviced will be paid for out of Mark’s benefits.

Meanwhile the NHS has paid for Mark’s two wheelchairs, one electric for use outside, and one manual for use in the flat. For getting out and about, TfL provides a limited number of Dial-A-Ride buses, which have to be booked in advance, as well as Freedom Passes for public bus fares. Southwark Council pays for Mark’s Taxi Card, and gives him an annual allowance for hiring taxis.

Mark also uses Southwark’s bus services when he travels to one of its day centres, in Walworth.

Pat said: “Mark used to go to Bradenham Resource Centre five day per week. Then it became four days per week, then it went to three.

“It was council buses that took him to the Resource Centre, or on shopping trips. Now they don’t do any of that. They tell you to go by Dial-a-Ride, but they’re not always available. They can get you there, but you guarantee they can get you back “Carers for disabled people are mostly parents who are getting old themselves. The only respite that family carers get like us is when their loved ones go to the day centres.”

Syd told the News: “Family carers like us save this country billions of pounds.

“We’re of pensionable age, so I can’t ask for benefits, but we are oncall for Mark 24/7, can you imagine what that’s like with a son who’s more than 40-years-old, and never getting a day off.

“It costs over £1,000 to put someone in a home for a week.” and engage with service users on any changes as appropriate.”

“We can of course never categorically rule out reduction in funding for services as we are under immense financial pressure with year on year cuts to budgets and growing demand.

We will always communicate any major changes to residents as soon as we are aware of the potential for them to happen.”

The News has previously reported on fears that Riverside day centre in Bermondsey, and the Queen’s Road day centre in Peckham, could both close this year, as Southwark has not guaranteed renewing their leases, which will both end in 2017.

Nag’s Head pub gets extra month before shutting doors in May

THE LANDLADY of the Nag’s Head pub in Camberwell Road has been given another month to stay open, and has vowed to go out with a bang with St George’s Day and the Bank Holiday Monday.

Speaking to the News, while the old boozer filled with St Patrick’s Day revellers, Julie Clifford said she would officially close on May 2.

The 54-year-old has now officially signed the premises licence over to the pub’s freeholder, Camberwell Road Ltd. “That was the nail in the coffin,” Julie said, “there’s nothing we can do now.

“Every day I must get 40 odd people asking if it’s definitely going to close.

“Now we will officially shut on the Bank Holiday Monday, which leaves us with St George’s Day, which is nice because it was on St George’s Day that the pub properly opened [in 2010]”.

Julie’s fight to keep the Nag’s Head has been long-running, and an online petition set up by locals attracted over

1,600 signatures.

But hopes were dashed when Camberwell Road Ltd informed Julie her rent would be doubled to £75,000 per year. Julie added that she believes the owner will seek a new company to operate as a pub in the building, since they asked her to transfer the licence to them, rather than return it to Southwark Council.

“I’ve got no plans at the moment,” Julie said, “I didn’t plan what to do next because I always hoped it would stay open, but I’ve got a mortgage to pay, so I need to find something”.

When Julie moved in, her first beer order was bought by locals who wanted to lend their support.

“I’m going to miss every single one of them,” Julie previously said.

Kay Guidera, who set up the online petition, said: “This pub is one of the last originals in the area, as well as being part of our history and heritage.

“It’s a vital link for the people of Camberwell to congregate, particularly the elderly who perhaps don’t have any family close by and this is their only link with the outside world.”

TWO DULWICH Irish dancing girls earned first position and their first ever championship titles at the recent Finbar Conway Preliminary Championships in Luton.

Now, Florence Mitchell, twelve and Aisling O’Hara, fourteen – who both train at Dulwich’s Hopkins Academy – can progress to the next level of entering the World Championship qualifiers in June.

Ex-Riverdancer and teacher, Sarah Hopkins, said: “I’m ecstatic because I’ve seen them work for so hard for this. They both attend three to five lessons a week, as well as juggling their school work. To see them reap the rewards is just amazing.”

Aisling and Florence both outshone between 40 and 50 other competitors in their age groups to be crowned winners.

“We are very proud of her. She’s worth her weight in gold and more. We’re just overjoyed,” said Aisling’s mum, Lisa.

Courage returns to Bankside roots BANKSIDE

TO CELEBRATE its 230th year of brewing beer, Courage is returning to its roots and will once again brew beer in London SE1.

The Courage SE1 project will see a new limited edition range of cask ales released every two months until February 2018 in celebration of Courage’s London heritage.

The beers will be brewed by the team at Southwark Brewing Company, established in a railway arch in Druid Street in 2014, with the guidance of the brew team at Charles Wells.

Two beers, a Session IPA and a Smoked Porter, were released first during London Beer Week (March 13-19) with a series of tours highlighting Courage’s influence on SE1. Southwark Brewing Company will produce a further five beers, one every two months, until February 2018.

Each beer will only be brewed in small quantities and will be limited editions.

Jason Wills, marketing director at Charles Wells, said the project perfectly connected the past and future of brewing in SE1. “While the brewery itself may no longer be there, the Courage Cockerel continues to stand proudly upon thousands of London pub signs, mirrors, windows, bars and lighting,” he said.

“Under its gaze, Courage’s homeland

has once again become a centre of brewing, boasting a string of new microbreweries, each with their own personality and product.

“Breweries such as Southwark Brewing Company continue the fine traditions of London’s ales and stouts, while each adding their own new personality and influences from other brewing cultures “The Courage SE1 Project will merge the expertise and creativity of brewers from Courage and Southwark Brewing Company and bring a modern twist to the Courage range that is close to our original London SE1 roots in both location and passion.”

Peter Jackson, managing director of Southwark Brewing Company, said the area’s rich brewing history is exactly why he decided to brew beer in SE1.

“The brewing heritage of SE1 was important in choosing a location for our brewery, combining a rich history of fine ales with the vibrancy of the regeneration of Southwark and Bermondsey,” he said.

A HUSBAND and wife who have managed a Herne Hill pharmacy for 42 years will say goodbye to their customers before retiring on April 3.

Viren Patel, owner of the Herne Hill Group Practice in Burbage Road, first bought the business in 1974, after graduating from Bath University in 1972.

“I’ll miss all our customers, and we have had so many regulars over the years.” Viren, 69, said.

“I used to serve patients who came here with their children, and now I see them grown up coming in with their children. It’s a proper family community. They come in with their babies and we see them live their lives.

“This is a very pleasant area and people have been very good to us.

People come in and say hello even if they’re not coming in to get anything.

“It was a hard decision to make, to move on.”

He has worked long hours, Monday to Saturday with his wife Usha and their two sons, who have since qualified to become a doctor and a dentist.

“Our situation is that we live with my two sons and two daughters-inlaw, and three granddaughters, all under one roof in Streatham,” Viren said.

Over the years he has been happy to help people in the area with advice for elderly relatives, and to deliver people’s medication to their homes – saying it helps relationships with customers and helps the business.

Viren also thanked the GP surgeries who have “all been very cooperative”, which makes his job easier. He is “not sitting down and putting [his] feet up” and said he doesn’t want to “start feeling old and going downhill”. To help with the transition with the new owners, Viren added that he will be popping in to help. The family will be having a few gatherings to mark their last days at their pharmacy, and will be having a small send off at a local pub.

Residents evacuated in flats blaze BERMONDSEY: Residents at a block of flats were evacuated in the middle of the night after a fire broke out.

Around 20 people were evacuated from flats in Millender Walk by police officers in the early hours of Friday, March 17.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters and officers were called to the scene at 1.47am. Part of a disused car park

on the lower ground floor of the building was damaged by the fire, which was brought under control by 3.50am. Fire crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Dockhead, New Cross, Peckham and Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.

The blaze was believed to have been caused by the “unsafe disposal of cigarettes”, a fire spokesperson said.

DOZENS OF residents on a Peckham estate, condemned for demolition only five years after it was built, face being evicted before they can find new places to live.

It was revealed by the News in May 2016 that flats in Solomon’s Passage, owned by Wandle Housing Association, were ridden with defects, including subsidence and water leaks.

Residents say roughly half of 86 flats in the four blocks (40, 42, 44 and 46) are now empty.

But leaseholders and shared-owners in 40 and 46 have been left reeling after being told they must leave by March 31, after agreeing to sell their homes back to Wandle.

One leaseholder, who asked to speak anonymously, said: "Wandle has stated publicly that they do not wish to cause unnecessary anxiety or stress to residents of Solomon’s Passage.

“Yet we are all facing the real prospect of being made homeless and the prospect of continual upheaval from staying in hotels and with friends until we can move into our new homes.”

Although some residents have exchanged contracts on the sale of their properties back to Wandle, many are experiencing difficulties in securing mortgages or new homes.

On February 7, Wandle gave written confirmation that there would be no deadline for moving out.

A timeline published on Wandle’s website also shows that work will not commence on blocks until “late 2017” leaving affected leaseholders to ask why they can’t be given more time.

“Our properties will be left empty in April,” one resident said. “So why can we not agree an extension based on individual circumstances? It seems Wandle have lost all compassion now that they agreed the buyback of our properties.”

Another resident said: “If we all have to move out on the same day, how on earth will we all be able to park removal vans and get our belongings out of the block all at the same time?

“How can we all be moving our furniture out with one small lift?

“To date, we have successfully supported 34 homeowners at Solomon’s Passage to purchase a new home or move temporarily whilst we carry out work.

“We continue to be flexible where we can and have delayed completion dates previously to help accommodate specific needs.

Starting the work on schedule is part of our commitment to all the residents of Solomon’s Passage, including tenants, leaseholders and shared owners.”

Independent leaseholder service set up by council

AN INDEPENDENT advocacy service to investigate leaseholders’ disputes with Southwark Council will soon be up and running.

MySouthwark Home Owners Agency will be a first for the housing sector, the council has said, and follows on a pledge made by Southwark Labour in 2014.

It will specifically aim to improve leaseholder satisfaction, which “lags behind” that of council tenants – according to a survey of 665 responses.

The council is also recruiting a panel of independent experts to specifically help resolve service charge disputes.

A statement from Southwark Council said: “The aim is to create a bespoke service for each homeowner, agreeing investigation completion dates with an emphasis on strong communication, to ensure homeowners feel listened to throughout their contact with the agency.”

Over the next few months the council

will be recruiting an independent Board to oversee the new service, monitor performance, and work with the council to make improvements to the homeowner services.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We listened to and recognised the unique concerns of homeowners in the borough and the extra, specialist support they need.

“This is why we pledged to set up an agency, independent from the council, with the relevant expertise to listen to and resolve their, often complex, issues. While in its early stages, I am delighted that the service has come to fruition and wish the team every success going forward.”

The service includes a team of advocacy officers based in Market Place, Bermondsey, and another team in a homeowner focused contact centre based in Queens Road, Peckham.

Data and feedback from those using the service will be used to improve it further, and measure satisfaction from clients.

Peckham ‘the best place to live’

SOUTHWARK: Peckham has been named as the best place to live in London, according to the Sunday Times.

The accolade came in part two of The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide, published on March 19.

The guide named the top ten places to live in the capital – and both Peckham and Bermondsey made the cut.

A wide range of factors were taken into consideration, from jobs, exam results, and broadband speed, to culture, community spirit, and local shops. The methodology relies on hard data and robust statistics on crime and education, but also on expert knowledge from The Sunday Times judging panel.

The judges combine the numbers with their own experience of the villages, towns and cities, such as local pubs, ease of transport and the range of attractive property to ensure the chosen locations truly are places where readers and their families can thrive.

The top ten places to live in London were named (in alphabetical order) as: Barnes, Bermondsey, Bloomsbury, Canonbury, City, Crystal Palace, Muswell Hill, Peckham, Teddington, and Walthamstow.

Construction starts on old fire station

PECKHAM: Construction has begun to convert the Grade IIlisted former Peckham Road Fire Station into a huge new exhibition space for the South London Gallery.

The project got off the ground after the building was donated to the South London Gallery (SLG) by a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous.

The new gallery is on track to open in 2018. Margot Heller, director of the SLG said: “The exceptionally generous gift of the fire station and support of our funders will be truly transformative for the SLG. “Our expansion into this distinctive building will enable us to undertake a major step change in the scope and impact of our artistic and education programmes, championing the importance of art, culture, and public space that is free to all at a time of rapid change in the local area.”

The Mayor’s London Regeneration Fund pledged £4m, and fundraising from local groups and charities also contributed £3.3m. £1.65m also came from the National Lottery.

The grant will help to restore the building and develop a programme of activities, and volunteering scheme which will focus on expanding the SLG’s archive to document the social, economic and cultural history of the local area.

The Fire Station will extend the scope of the gallery’s exhibition, events and education activities.

The SLG is now embarking on the final stage of its fundraising campaign to secure the final £700,000 for restoration costs.

Expert from Guy’s warns of the consequences of eating too much

A CHILDHOOD obesity expert from Guy’s has dubbed the issue “the HIV of our age”, as Southwark and Lambeth are named as having some of the highest rates in the country.

In Southwark, rates of obesity stand at 23 per cent of four-to-fiveyear-olds, and 43 per cent of ten-toeleven-year-olds.

Dr Jude Oben, a consultant obesity physician at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT), said: “In the 1980s people weren’t told not to have sex because of HIV, but they were told about safe sex.

“We’re not telling people to stop eating but we want them to know the consequences if they eat too much.

The idea that walking 30 minutes a day is all you need to do to stay healthy is nonsense. Obesity is killing millions of people across the country and costing the NHS billions, despite it being preventable.”

Dr Oben added: “Obesity is the HIV of our age. It has the makings of a public health catastrophe for children which needs to be averted.

“We need a public education programme to make people aware of the link with cancer and other serious health conditions.”

Studies have linked obesity to increasing the risk of developing more than fifteen cancers, including breast cancer, liver cancer and colon cancer, as well as type-two diabetes, arthritis, coronary heart disease, and stroke.

A report, ‘Southwark Healthy Weight Strategy 2016-21’ referred to Walworth, Rotherhithe and Peckham as having the highest rates of childhood obesity in the borough.

Interviews with local children and parents showed the prevalence of chicken shops and fast food as being seen as a cause.

“Many people talked particularly about chicken and chip shops and other fast food outlets where food was cheap and accessible. Children and young people themselves

Retired judge to head Surrey Canal inquiry

A RETIRED judge will head up Lewisham's inquiry into Surrey Canal Sports Foundation – which should begin next month.

Former Master of the Rolls and Supreme Court judge, the Right Honourable Lord John Dyson, will carry out an independent inquiry into matters related to Lewisham Council's

Lewisham mayor Steve Bullock, Southwark Council leader Peter John, and Tanni Grey-Thompson have all resigned from the charity since the allegations came to light.

The September 2016 CPO decision now has no force and cannot be implemented in the future.

Any regeneration of New Bermondsey/Surrey Canal will require a completely new and fresh decision by the council.

More power to London HE RECENT budget announcements may not seem like they contained a great deal for local Southwark residents.

Yet, masked behind the fiasco of the National Insurance Contributions U-turn, the budget did highlight some changes which may help towards improving lives for ordinary hard working Southwark residents.

One of the key areas of focus on the London Assembly, which involves close cross-party working with all Assembly Members, is the case for additional devolution to the Mayor, which in turn will allow London more control over future investment and growth. The publication of the London Devolution Agreement in the budget outlined additional devolution in key areas including infrastructure, business rates, criminal justice, congestion, health and employment support.

Housing, particularly the lack of genuinely affordable housing, continues to be the top issue in an inner London borough like Southwark with spiralling rents charged to tenants in the private rented sector.

Southwark Council has an ambitious target to build 11,000 new council homes by 2043, with the first 1,500 to be delivered by 2018.

This new funding arrangement, and a strong partnership between City Hall and Southwark Council will help the Mayor in building new projects with less dependence on the Government and could bring forward building to the benefit of Southwark residents.

A number of Southwark businesses will feel the disproportionate impact of the increase in Business Rates, due to come into force from 1 April 2017 – in some parts of SE1 some businesses would see their rates increase by almost 80%. Like most local authorities, Southwark Council collects business rates where the majority of the income goes straight to central government, and the additional increase collected may not be distributed to local businesses. The announcement from the Chancellor to explore options for London to have additional powers over the administration of business rates will help the Mayor and Southwark Council to determine where best to spend and how increases are worked out.

With the months of uncertainty caused by the Brexit vote it is positive to see the Mayor being given the powers to allow London to succeed. Although the vote seems like a lifetime ago, Article 50 will finally be triggered by the government later this month. In light of this, Sadiq Khan has launched a new campaign calling on the Prime Minister to give the right to remain in the UK to EU Nationals. As a representative for a strong remain voting borough like Southwark, I support this they should not be used as pawns in the EU-exit negotiations. In London there are over one million EU citizens living and contributing to our great city and we must uphold and embrace the notion that London is Open.

Bermondsey’s grotesque over-development

WE LEARNED last week that Grosvenor is planning to retain the large brick industrial building that fronts Clements Road in Bermondsey and to build several stories of housing on top of it towards the rear of the building.

Two years ago Grosvenor served residents on Clements Road and Webster Road with a notice removing residents' rights to light. I'm not sure what the legals are surrounding this are but I think that if we have lived here for 19 years and one day then we have rights to light. If not, and we have not lived here for that period of time, we don't have those rights. So as far as a judicial review of any planning applications/permissions are concerned, I'm not sure where I stand as a resident.

Bringing high-rise development to the site by Grosvenor will severely impact our quality of life and property values. Any high-rise development would not be in keeping with the historically low-rise nature of the site's setting and severely affect the neighbourhood.

The historic viaduct that abuts the site and surrounding buildings date is about 150 years old, one of the oldest railway viaducts in the world, certainly in the UK. The structure carries the former London and Greenwich Railway line and consists of 851 semicircular arches and 27 skew arches or road bridges.

It was built between 1834 and 1836, is London’s first ever railway, is the longest run of arches in the world, and is the earliest example of an entirely elevated railway line. Spa Road Railway Station, which opened in 1836, was the first rail ticketing office to open in London, and also abuts the site.

Part of the land comprises buildings that James Peek and George Hender Frean built for the Clements Road Peek Frean’s biscuit factory in 1866.

Grosvenor realises that to demolish these would be a step too far and plans to retain the older buildings as part of its redevelopment plan.

Thus, given the historical setting, you can see why a high-rise modern mixed development is entirely inappropriate for the Biscuit Factory site. South East

London has very few historical buildings left, many having been demolished, or bombed out of existence by the Luftwaffe during The Blitz. The area has always been lowrise, and there is nowhere quite like the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe district in terms of historical interest and value.

An open council planning meeting where local residents could come and make clear their thoughts about site took place some two or three years ago. This was in response to an outline planning application from Workspace for the Biscuit Factory site. Workspace said it planned to demolish the large industrial building fronting Clements Road and assured residents there and in Webster Road that the redevelopment would consist of “a row of townhouses a few stories high.”

That seems to have been jettisoned for a new high-rise plan put forward by Grosvenor.

I also want to address transport issues. The roads around here are already busy and dangerous enough.

There are countless schools in the area and thousands of schoolchildren are to be seen everywhere either waiting for buses or walking to school; increased traffic to a large, mixed scheme on the biscuit site would thus pose a massive traffic and pollution risk to local youngsters, also a danger.

Albion Street is a Cinderella Street

THE REGENERATION and revitalisation of Albion Street is a welcomed initiative in what has been a “Cinderella Street”, with reference to Southwark News March 16, 2017 ‘Residents’ anger over high rise plan for school playground.’

As local Ward Councillors we welcome the addition of much needed new school places at Albion Primary School in a state of the art new building. The increased footfall will help support the local businesses and the local economy bringing more visitors to the area.

We also welcome the proposals for building new homes on the former Civic Centre site and the land released by Albion School for housing. We share the concerns of local residents about the level of

truly affordable housing and have fought hard to secure new council homes and London Living Rent homes for key workers on the former Civic Centre site. Across both sites there will be 24 new London Living Rent homes and 39 new Council homes.

We will continue to fight the corner of local residents and businesses in Albion Street and look forward to seeing a vibrant high street where people can work and live.

Living in an open dustbin

All too often when walking around the borough one sees a hot spot of mess created by people inhaling nitrous oxide and just dumping the cylinders on the ground.

Why can’t they tidy up their own waste?

Apart from anything else it focusses attention on their, possibly illegal, inconsiderate activities. I for one don’t want to live in an open dustbin.

Or perhaps I am missing something and it is contemporary art.

Freedom pass saviour

LAST FRIDAY morning (17 March) I could not find my Freedom Pass and realised I must have lost it while travelling on the No.12 bus

On Saturday morning, as I was about to leave the house to activate the oyster card I bought on Friday, I found in the morning’s post a carefully addressed padded envelope containing my pass, including some documents and cash I had tucked inside, together with a little (unsigned) note, saying it was found on Thursday around 8.15 pm on the 12 bus, only minutes after I got off the bus at Peckham Rye. I would like to thank this wonderful person very much indeed for such a thoughtful, generous and caring deed.

Why spotting signs of eating disorders is so hard – but vital

HE RECENT Eating Disorders Awareness Week brought these conditions into the media spotlight, but sufferers try their hardest to keep their symptoms to themselves.

This often means they miss out on the support and treatment they desperately need.

When we talk about ‘eating disorders’ we usually mean anorexia nervosa, bulimia or binge eating.

They can affect anyone, male or female, young or old, whatever their background or circumstances. Sadly, without help, the consequences can be devastating and potentially lifethreatening.

In Southwark, between April last year and January this year, 56 patients had treatment for an eating disorder and a further 64 are still receiving treatment. But local GPs believe there are many more suffering in silence.

Eating disorders are often blamed on the social pressure to be thin, as young people in particular feel they should look a certain way. However, the causes are usually more complex. Getting medical help early can make all the difference, so it’s vital that we can spot the warning signs in our friends and family.

Someone with an eating disorder will have an abnormal attitude towards food that causes them to change their eating habits or behaviour. They may be obsessed with their weight or body shape.

Alarm bells should ring if someone is frequently missing meals; complaining of being fat even though they are normal or underweight; repeatedly weighing themselves and looking at themselves in a mirror; and eating little or no food when they are with other people.

MAXWELL ANDERSON'S 1954 study in child psychopathy is, to say the least, a bit dark. It tells the disturbing story of a little girl whose behaviour increasingly raises the concerns of her family.

People she comes in to contact with have 'accidents' and get hurt, writes Matt Baker...

The Brockley Jack's intimate setting was perfect for the evening's macabre offering. Rhoda, played by the excellent Rebecca Rayne, is a fantastic character and the young actress does the role justice, bringing a great balance between the childish and the chilling.

The first half was fast paced, and the cast brought the excellent script to life with great energy. After the interval the atmosphere changed with the piece, and players, becoming noticeably darker. As Rhoda's mother comes to terms with the discovery that her little

girl, her perfect little girl, has a dark side, the piece spiralled toward its ending and the tension rose to a great climax. The play’s final twist was delivered like a nerve shattering punch and was very well done indeed.

The staging and direction deserve a mention, as this was as tight a production as I have seen in fringe theatres. The audience were rightly appreciative, but I did feel the second half was a bit long.

With a truly great play, done well in a fantastic little venue, you have the makings of a great night.

Titan falls in Bermondsey Square

VITRINE PRESENTS With Pylon and Pier a new commission by British artist Lucy Tomlins for Bermondsey Square.

With Pylon and Pier, Tomlins takes the public square as the work’s starting point.

Traditionally this is where statues of distinguished people are sited, usually placed there to reinforce notions of power or national prestige. Tomlins’ sculpture reverses this, however, presenting a statue of the Titan Atlas – not as in Greek mythology holding up the sky for eternity, but fallen from its plinth and, grasping the globe, lain on its side.

The viewer’s gaze, which would normally be directed upwards in awe,

now stares across on the felled colossus drained, the loss of his mythological strength underscored by the diminutive size of his body – he is only 1.4 metres in height, thus allowing the beholder a more intimate interaction with the work.

Says Tomlins: ‘Though not didactic, my work has often involved subtle social commentary, so I took this opportunity to consider the nature and function of the public square, as a space for the coming together of the community, a place with a function as a meeting place, and a location for democracy and power shifts.’

Miserly mirth

STRAIGHT OFF the bat, I would like to say that the two best things going for this rare outing of Molière's The Miser' are Griff Rhys Jones and Lee Mack, making his theatre debut. Jones was compelling as the tight fisted miserable main protagonist Harpagon, both funny and tragic, whilst Lee Mack was just very, very funny as the lowly but streetwise servant, writes Matt Baker...

To call this a 'gag fest' is to wildly underestimate the sheer volume of jokes, innuendo, and physical gaffs squeezed in to the show. The supporting characters in Molière's piece have always functioned to provide a somewhat 'sane' canvas, on to which the true madness and tragedy of Harpagon is writ large. In this adaptation by Sean Foley and Phil Porter, however, the supporting characters such as, Harpagon's son Clèante, his future wife, and his daughter Èlise, have the lunacy dial turned up to eleven, which leaves a feeling more of pantomime than a comedic tragedy.

Whilst there is no doubt that the audience is given a lot of laughs, I felt that what was missed in the tidal wave of jokes was the tragic sense of how pathetic and sad Harpagon is. As I've said Griff Rhys Jones brings his considerable performance to the role, but much of the depth and nuance is lost against the almost 'Carry On' tone of the support.

Having said this, those who enter in to the Garrick for escapism and a good laugh won't be disappointed. All in all a good night out of nonstop giggles, and British slapstick from a French master.

AFTER 230 years of brewing beer, Courage has returned to its Southwark roots.

There were two Courage breweries in SE1 in the eighteenth century – the Anchor Brewhouse in Shad Thames and the Barclay Perkins Brewery (known as the Anchor Brewery) where Shakespeare’s Globe is now.

In 1787, John Courage, a shipping agent from Glasgow, bought a small brewery at Horselydown, SE1, which became the Anchor Brewhouse.

Peter Jackson, owner and managing director of Southwark Brewing Company, which will be brewing limited edition Courage beers, said this was known as ‘Courage’s Horselydown Brewery’.

It is widely-believed that the name for the area derived from the fact it used be an open space for pasturing horses – although the whole area had

been built over by the time Courage moved in.

Courage’s brewery was located at the end of a street, now named Horselydown Lane, close to Tower Bridge.

“They used to brew and process here and there was a field here where the horses would rest overnight and that’s how it became Horselydown Lane,” said Peter, who has been in the beer industry for 37 years.

Just over a year after Courage bought the small brewery, the first entry into the brewing book recorded that he had brewed 51 barrels of beer at the Anchor Brewhouse, Horselydown. This grew to become more than half a million barrels each year in its prime.

When he died suddenly in 1793 at the age of 36, Courage’s widow Harriot was left with a young family, including a three-year-old son, named John, and three daughters.

She took over the running of the

brewery with the help of her managing clerk, John Donaldson, until her son was old enough be involved.

Sadly Harriot died in 1797, and with no member of the Courage family to step into the management, John Donaldson took over and it became Courage and Donaldson.

In 1955, Courage merged with Barclay, Perkins & Co Ltd to form Courage & Barclay Ltd. And in 1960 it merged with H & G Simonds to form Courage, Barclay & Simonds Ltd. Peter said London really revolved around the brewing industry for many years, and that Southwark was wellknown for its nightlife at the time.

“It was a good idea to build a brewery in Southwark because that’s where all the pubs and ale houses were,” he said.

“People used to travel to London but the bridge would close at about 7.30 at night and people would have to stay

on the South Bank.

“A lot of the courtyards of the coaching houses were used to perform plays. If the rich people liked it they would throw their money down and if they didn’t they would go back to their rooms and that’s how the actors learnt.

“The Tabard is probably the most famous coaching inn because it was the starting point for pilgrims in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The first mention of Southwark Ale was by Chaucer hundreds of years before we even opened.”

Peter, who grew up in Sunderland and has worked for breweries all over the country, including as managing director of Marston’s Brewery, said the beer industry also helped to save lives.

where people were dying from cholera in London and worked out it was where the breweries were,” he said.

“People who worked in the breweries drank a lot of beer and even their children did. They worked out that if people boiled the water, the cholera deaths died off.”

In the 1890s part of the original Courage Anchor Brewery site was knocked down to make way for Tower Bridge, which lands right where Courage started.

The Anchor brewery closed its doors for the final time in 1981, with production moving to Reading.

In 2007 the brand was purchased by Charles Wells, the UK’s largest independent brewery.

Well-travelled food at Caravan

The company describes its food as “well-travelled” and with its focus on small plates and sharing encouraged, there’s something for everyone on the menu.

This newest addition to the chain is housed on Great Guildford Street on the ground floor of an old metal box factory.

My dining partner and I were greeted instantly with a warm smile at the door when we arrived, and were

shown straight to our table.

It was 6.45pm on a Wednesday evening and I was struck by how busy the vast space had already become.

There were diners poring over their menus, as others were already tucking into vibrant-looking dishes, while couples nestled into corners sharing a bottle of wine.

Our attentive waitress suggested we choose two to three small plates each to share, and recommended a delicious and smooth Montepulciano/Sangiovese red wine which went down a treat.

The aim of the game at Caravan is sharing, so we dug right in and ordered a vast array of dishes.

To start, we tried the stilton and peanut wontons with sticky soy (£4.50) which I thought was priced reasonably and thoroughly enjoyed, being a blue cheese-lover, but my dining partner found it too rich.

Next we had a flow of small dishes, including a red quinoa and buckwheat grain bowl with stem broccoli, sweet potato, peanuts, and miso-tahini dressing (£8); bittersweet pan-fried mackerel (£8.50); a Burmese chicken salad (£7.50); and braised oxtail in a creamy sauce with black beans and chilli (£8).

The quinoa was enjoyable, but the £8 price tag seemed a stretch for a trendy 'superfood'. The pan-fried mackerel was extremely tasty; it was perfectly seared with a juicy edge from the sultanas and lemon. The healthy serving of succulent oxtail was delicious and, although served tepid, it was still easily my favourite dish of the evening.

The Burmese chicken salad was oozing with flavour in a turmeric, chilli, and lime dressing – however, served fridge-cold, its sharp taste meant a few mouthfuls was enough for us.

A glance around the room told us Caravan's pizzas were a popular choice, and so we decided to try one for ourselves.

We ordered the charred portobello mushroom, porcini ricotta, mozzarella, and dressed rocket pizza, and as a mushroom lover and pizza lover, I couldn’t wait to tuck in.

The base was a good consistency, and it could be down to personal taste, but the fusion of portobello mushroom and porcini ricotta was too much for me on one pizza and a section of the crust was burnt.

We decided to order another pizza: this time opting for the fennel salami,

charred radicchio, confit cherry tomato, taleggio, and jalapeno. This one was closer to the classic Italian fare we were after, with dry-cured slices of meat, creamy cheese, and peppery salad.

It was a fun experience sampling the different, and quite often exotic, tastes – which we nicely topped off with a salted caramel take on an affogato – although there is no denying the price can quickly ratchet up while experimenting.

A few friends around the table sharing the tapas-style dishes will have a great time – and the attentive service makes it a safe choice for a memorable evening.

ayor of Southwark Councillor Kath Whittam has laid the first brick at a new development of affordable homes in Peckham.

The Rye Lane development is being delivered by housing association Metropolitan and comprises 22 flats with up to three bedrooms available through shared ownership – as well as five three-bedroom flats for market sale.

Shared ownership is a part-buy, part-rent scheme which allows buyers to purchase a percentage of the full market value of a property (usually between 25% and 75%) and pay a subsidised rent on the remainder. Over time, buyers can increase the share that they own in their home and ‘staircase’ up to full ownership.

After the tour, she laid the new block’s first brick.

Cllr Whittam said: “It was an honour to attend the topping out ceremony at Rye Lane. These new shared ownership flats will help many families, who would not have been able to afford to buy a home outright, get on the property ladder.

This new building on Rye Lane is an exciting part of Peckham’s redevelopment, close to the heart of the vibrant town centre.”

DULWICH HAMLET’S chances of promotion received a huge shot in the arm after they defeated Kingstonian 4-2 at Champion Hill on Monday night.

Kingstonian hadn’t won in nine games and it showed. Ashley Carew put his side ahead from the penalty spot – his 44th goal in 150 games for the club – in the first half

before Ibra Sekajja doubled the lead soon after the break.

Goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey denied Hamlet a third when he brilliantly pushed Ibrahim Kargbo’s header onto the bar However, Tolfrey could little to prevent the dominant home side extending their lead in front of the 595 attendance when Nyren Clunis surged down the right wing before crossing accurately for Dipo Akinyemi to finish.

Kingstonian got a goal back with just over 20 minutes left through a

Lionesses boss: We live and learn

MILLWALL LIONESSES boss Lee Burch said his side’s 5-0 FA Cup fifth-round defeat at Bristol City last Sunday was “a tough one to take”.

Burch lamented his side’s poor start when they failed to defend set-pieces.

And he felt their top-flight opponents’ quality was obvious as the Lionesses bowed out of the competition.

“It’s a tough one to take,” Burch said.

“At the end of the day we’ve come to a Super League 1 side and they looked like a Super League 1 side, they were decent and scored five goals.

“It’s a bit disappointing that we started slowly, we conceded three from corners. It just wasn’t our day, we’ve had better days than this and will have better days. We learn from it and we go

forward.

“The girls are hurting at the moment and rightly so. They have to use it to prepare for the next game. This hasn’t happened before, I don’t think it’s going to happen again. It’s all a learning curve.

“We played a very good side, they’re full-time and they looked like it. We need to go away and learn from it and take things on board.

Bance gets first win

JUNIOR BOXER Javaun Bance’s future is “very bright” after he won a unanimous decision in his first fight for Lynn AC Boxing Club last week.

Bance has been with the club for two seasons but only got his boxing card recently. And he showed few nerves as he defeated Rakeem Harris from South Norwood & Victory ABC on the Fitzroy Lodge show.

His coach Elwin Oliveira was impressed with Bance’s discipline.

He said: “He put in a very mature performance for his first-ever bout.

He boxed to instruction and came away the winner with a unanimous decision.

“I was so pleased he got his first bout under his belt and the future now looks very bright for Javaun.”

FISHER BOSS Dean Harrison said his side’s 2-0 victory over Lordswood last Saturday was “huge” as they “fight to the death” to beat the drop.

“He did well,” Harison said. “He made a couple early on, Nic. He’s been a good signing. He was sharp, he was sharp in training on Thursday. They had a good session, the keepers, and he looked at it, he was up for it.”

That result left Fisher just two points behind Erith & Belvedere, who are in fourth-last place in the table.

However, Fisher couldn’t build on their positive performance from the weekend, as they went down 2-0 to Tunbridge Wells on Tuesday night.

“We’ve got a week off, which is nice as far as no game next week, and then we’ve got Everton. We look at this and previous games and it’s another step.

“I’m really proud of the girls. They’re hurting, we’re all hurting, but we’ll take the positives from it and use it as a massive learning experience.

The away side had to play the first 55 minutes with only ten men but held on until five minutes from time when they lost to a deflected strike.

No Fred snub

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris said there was nothing to be read into his leaving Fred Onyedinma on the bench with his side chasing a goal against Bury last weekend.

Harris brought on Aiden O’Brien, Calum Butcher and then David Worrall to try to find a way to break down Lee Clark’s side.

Onyedinma is out of contract in the summer and hasn’t signed a new deal despite being offered one. Harris was asked about the situation at the Fans’ Forum last week and expressed his frustration. “We can't do any more. It takes two parties,” he said.

“Agents do the talking. I find it strange players don’t want to talk themselves about the most important things in their lives.

He said this week his decision not to call on Onyedinma against the Shakers was based on purely football reasons.

“I wanted to get Aiden on the pitch, he’s scored twelve times this year and is always a goal threat,” Harris explained.

“Butch gives us that extra yard running forward. Do you put another forward up front? I felt we were getting a lot of possession behind their defence. I thought David Worrall with his crossing ability might be able to get on the ball deep and put some good crosses into the box.

“It became difficult on that pitch because every time the ball came near him it was bouncing up around his chin.

“Fred is a brilliant young man who has played really well for us. I just felt that those were the changes that were needed on Saturday.”

PAUL ROBINSON may have signed a new contract recently with AFC Wimbledon and has spoken of playing until he’s 38, but the door will remain open on a potential return to Millwall.

Robinson, 35, played 366 times for Millwall and secured his name in club folklore by scoring the only goal in the 2010 League One play-off final against Swindon at Wembley.

The majority of his Lions appearances were alongside current boss Neil Harris, who was asked at the club’s second Fans’ Forum of the season last Thursday night at The Den if he would welcome Robinson back in a coaching capacity.

Robinson signed an undisclosedlength Dons deal earlier this month and is currently doing his coaching badges.

He was at White Hart Lane for the FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham Hotspur and caught up with Harris and Millwall assistant manager Dave Livermore.

Harris has been keen to work with people he played with or knows, and recently added his friend and former Southend defender Adam Barrett to Millwall’s coaching staff.

Asked this week if Robinson could one day return to the club, Harris said: “Robbo is a Millwall man. He’s got great affinity for the club and he gets the club.

“You need good people with leadership and good drive.

“It’s important to have people at this club who understand the workings of it and the mentality of it. So Robbo certainly fits the bill.

“There’s an element with it that, like myself, you have to go away and sample different football, playing-wise, coaching-wise, and live your life a different way after you’ve been

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris said afterwards fans need to be more patient with his players, but what his side really needed last Saturday was to show more urgency.

The Lions really only pressed Bury back in the last ten minutes and even then there was a hint of desperation about their play.

It was summed up in the 89th minute.

After a decent spell of possession, perhaps their longest of the game, they needed someone on the ball with the guile to penetrate Bury. Instead, it was centre-back Jake Cooper loping forward down the left wing and when he swung a long left leg attempting the hook a cross

into the box all he managed was to send it high and wide.

In fairness, Millwall should have been a goal ahead at that stage. In the 68th minute Jed Wallace gathered possession outside his own box and surged up the pitch before slipping Steve Morison through for a finish past goalkeeper Jed Murphy. Replays showed Morison was clearly onside, and Harris was right to express his dissatisfaction with the performance of the officials.

The home side could, though, easily have found themselves trailing after the first half, and after it took an exceptional Tony Craig tackle to deny James Vaughan. Former Crystal Palace striker Vaughan was through one-on-one after Byron Webster had mis-judged the bounce of the ball on halfway, but Craig appeared from nowhere to slide in with perfect timing to avert the danger at the last moment.

The home fans rose to acclaim the captain, but as seems so often to be the case recently, it didn’t provide the spark for sustained pressure on Bury’s goal.

Last weekend the best chance, apart from the disallowed goal, fell to Lee Gregory whose shot cannoned off the legs of goalkeeper Joe Murphy. Jed Wallace tested Murphy with a near-post shot from a short corner and at the other end Bury’s most dangerous player Vaughan sent a half-volley over Tom King’s crossbar.

It was another clean sheet – a twelfth in fifteen games – but it is the blanks at the other end doing the damage to Millwall’s chances of automatic promotion.

Harris said Lee Clark’s side were ultradefensive, but Millwall were guilty of standing too far off their opponents. Sure, that’s the favoured tactical set-up, but when one fan was heard to shout with frustration, “It’s bloody Bury!” it made the point that against a side in nineteenth place in the League One table before kickoff there should, perhaps, have been more

ambition.

This was a fourth scoreless draw after an FA Cup fixture this season and at least the sole focus now is only the league.

There are six more away games left and given the levels of frustration at The Den last Saturday maybe that’s a good thing.

BEN THOMPSON admits the pressure of playing at home in front of a demanding crowd affected the players in the past – but not anymore.

After last Saturday’s disappointing scoreless draw with Bury at The Den – the last at home until April – boss Neil Harris suggested the fans needed to be more patient with the players.

That expression was understandable given the evident frustration with Millwall often sitting deep and allowing Bury to have the ball. The home side exerted real, sustained pressure on their opponents only in the last ten minutes, but it wasn’t enough to avoid a fifth scoreless league draw since the turn of the year.

It wasn’t long ago that Thompson was in the stands loudly urging Millwall players to take the initiative and attack.

He understands that attitude, but believes the current squad are good enough to play the game they’re most comfortable with.

“In the past it did a bit, but I don’t think it affects us anymore,” Thompson says.

“We know our game plan, we know what we want to do.

“The fans obviously want the team to do well. I’ve been in the stands myself, I know what it’s like. From there you want to see your team press and be all action. But we can’t go out gung-ho and constantly run after the ball, because we’ll get picked off.

“There are some good players and good teams out there who will just pass it around us.

“Yeah, before it would affect us. If the fans were shouting at us we’d go and run after the ball. It doesn’t affect us now.

“Going away from home you don’t get that from the crowd as much, but I don’t mind whether we play home or away, we’re good enough to do a job and get three points.”

Having to deal with the anxiety of the home crowd and stick to the tactical plan won’t be a concern until the visit of Scunthorpe on April 1.

A young Millwall side produced a number of coming-of-age performances on the road last season – 2-1 at Sheffield United and Gillignham; 3-1 at Bradford in the first leg of the play-off semi-final – so it doesn’t worry Thompson that six of their nine remaining League One games this campaign are away from SE16.

“We’ve always been good on the road,” Thompson says. “We go to these places like Sheffield United in front of a big crowd, Bradford with a big support, there is a little bit less pressure.

“We’re used to a hostile atmosphere playing at The Den. I think wherever we play we can go out and do a job.

Whether it’s 20,000 or 1,000 we need to create our own atmosphere.

“With the long trips on Tuesday night you’re with your team-mates and there’s good banter on the bus. Going away is good, it gets the group together. We’ve got a great set of lads and everyone gets on well. That makes things a lot easier.”

Millwall’s recent seventeen-game unbeaten run ended away from home, but it was a fixture very few people expected them to get a result from.

Leight first-half show rescues young Lions

ADAM BARRETT continued the solid start to his Millwall coaching career as his Lions U23 side drew 1-1 with Huddersfield at The Den on Monday afternoon.

He explains: “I know we played against Premier League teams earlier in the competition, but not top Premier League teams. You’re waiting for a mistake that never happens; they’re sharper, quicker, stronger, they don’t give you much breathing space.

“That’s the level we have to aspire to be at, the very top level. You realise – especially the younger players – that we’ve got to work harder. Work harder on the training ground, and do it every day.

“To get to that level they must be training twice as hard as us, and doing it every single day, week-in, week-out.

“It gave me a bit of a kick up the bum and made me realise that to get to that level you’ve got to work hard. It’s not that I don’t do that anyway, but I’ve got

to do more, put in extra time on the training pitch.

“It was a good experience for everyone in the sense that we got to play on a big stage in front of a lot of people against a great team, as well as showing us the effort we have to put in to make ourselves better players.”

There is a strong chance Millwall’s season will climax with more winnertakes-all contests in May with another play-off campaign.

Thompson believes their five-game romp to the last eight of the FA Cup could prove beneficial if another tilt at promotion through that route is to be their fate.

“If we’re going to get to the paly-offs again we’ve got experience of it from last year as well as playing in the cup this season, knowing you have to get a result to get into the next round,” Thompson says.

“It’s so important that every single minute of the game you’re

concentrating. Whoever makes the most mistakes is going to lose the game, really.

“You look at Bradford last year, we capitalised on their mistakes, scored three goals and coming back to our place the only concern was not making errors, making sure we didn’t give them anything that would get their fans going.

“We’ve got that experience now and if we go to the play-offs again we will be a lot better.

“There are a lot of games coming up, it’s the business end of the season. It’s tough but I’m looking forward to it.

With three games in a week you’re always concentrating on the next one.

That’s good for us because we’ve no time to dwell on any mistakes, any points lost.

“Everyone’s fit and raring to go, everyone wants to play every minute of every game. We’ve got a big enough squad to change things around if need be.”

Striker Noel Leighton equalised just before half-time with a crisp low finish after Olly Dyson had given the away side the lead in the fifteenth minute.

Millwall battled impressively back into the game and recovered from the setback of Leighton missing a penalty as Terriers goalkeeper Luke Coddington saved his low effort.

Joe Martin – who hasn’t played for the senior side since the 3-0 defeat at Scunthorpe in December and who looks to be on his way out of the club – started at centre-back alongside Paul Rooney and went close with a free-kick.

Isaac Olaofe missed two good chances to put his side ahead but Millwall had to settle for a draw.

With a number of the regular members of the Professional Development Squad such as Harry Donovan, Christian Mbulu, Kyron Farrell and Kris Twardek out on loan it was a chance for the likes of Olaofe, Danny McNamara, Jethro Hanson, Mason Saunders-Henry and Joe Wicks to impress, and they can be pleased with their performances.

Meanwhile, Donovan made his debut in senior league football at the weekend. He started for former Lions striker Gary Alexander’s Greenwich Borough in their 1-1 Isthmian League Division One South draw at Whyteleafe.

CHAOTICALLY BRILLIANT for the neutral, anger-inducing for both sets of supporters, and, for members of the coaching staffs on both sides, where to start analysing this?

There were 25 chances created, many, many more wasted, incessant attacking football roared on by fans probably all of whom thought poor referee Darren England, who was an unwitting central figure for much of the game, wasn’t getting a grip on it. It says something when, a couple of minutes before halftime, after England had awarded a throw-in to Rochdale when nobody had any doubt it was Millwall’s, that it was the home fans who started chanting, “You don’t know what you’re doing.” It was that kind of night, logic flipped on its head over and over again.

Before kick-off Keith Hill could be seen singing along and dancing to Love Spreads by The Stone Roses, blaring out over the PA system. Not the typical image of control and concentration managers usually convey.

And this is no typical venue. Spotland is tucked away behind the Parish Church of St Clements. Google Maps seems to bring you circling in the vicinity without a hint that you’re actually getting close to the stadium.

The church comes into view first and it’s only after cresting a slip road that the floodlights are visible. An unaware visitor could pass the Crown Oil Arena – as it’s now unromantically known – thinking it’s nothing more than a hardware store. Corrugated sheets, dented in places, enclose the stands.

Yes, it’s at such venues it’s easy to imagine promotion bids floundering.

The pitch didn’t offer much hope for a sophisticated game of football. In fact, two hours before kick-off, Rochdale chairman Chris Dunphy took one look at the surface, turned around to a couple of directors and said: “An ‘undred grand doesn’t get you too much these days, does it?”

It was actually £110,000 Dale spent relaying the surface three weeks ago. In the four days before the game Spotland had been pounded with four months’ worth of rain. Biblical stuff, but not enough to prevent the game going ahead, passed after a 3pm pitch inspection.

Perhaps the players, then, felt they may as well embrace chaos if that’s what the pitch was going to throw up.

This was a riveting contest with no letup, both sides set on attack whenever they had the ball, wave after wave crashing down on both penalty areas for almost the entire 90 minutes.

Millwall went two goals up within 25 minutes and could have been four ahead before Rochdale mounted their comeback; Rochdale could have been 4-2 up before Millwall drew level late on.

This was so out of character for this Millwall team in the context of the last three months of their season. The Lions had kept twelve clean sheets in their previous fifteen games and in only four of their last twelve had more than one goal been scored. On Tuesday night that defensive certainty deserted them, or maybe they were swept up in all the mayhem, trying to add to their 2-0 lead

as it looked like they could destroy a Rochdale team that is as organised as a bumper car session.

Rochdale started in a 3-4-3 formation, and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on the right side of their three-pronged attack was immediately their chief threat. He saw a shot blocked in the box in the second minute and then twisted and turned Tony Craig before fizzing a low drive wide of the far post. Maybe with a word in his ear from Neil Harris at the break Craig went in for an early reducer after half-time before crudely fouling his nemesis to stop a counterattack and earning a yellow card later on.

Between those Mendez-Laing incisions into Millwall’s defensive mass Aiden O’Brien was crowded out before the ball would drop properly for him before Shaun Cummings diverted Calvin Andrew’s header out for a corner. It was already end to end.

It seemed only a matter of time before someone would make a mistake and soon England ensured the spotlight would be on him for the rest of the night. In the 14th minute Jake Cooper headed the ball back across goal to Byron Webster from Shaun Williams’ free-kick. Webster toppled backwards attempting to engineer a shot or tee up a team-mate. England, standing close, saw a foul. Lee Gregory grabbed the ball and shot down the middle with Conrad Logan diving off to the side. It was, remarkably, the tenth penalty Gregory had taken this season and his eighth success, his fifteenth goal of the season, all in the league, to join Steve Morison at the top of Millwall’s scoring charts. If he passes Morison he will have been Millwall’s top scorer in each of the three seasons he has been with the club.

Suddenly Millwall were rampant.

Eleven minutes later only Jimmy McNulty could provide the answer to why he tried a pass across his defence, which was turned the wrong way and under pressure from Millwall runners.

Gregory nipped in, passed to O’Brien and the attacker had his thirteenth goal of the campaign, a composed low finish past Loan to match his total for all of last season. .

The bedlam continued. After Jed Wallace saw a one-on-one saved and Morison cut inside before scooping over with his left foot when he should at least have tested Logan, at the other end Webster initially was calm to chest a cross and make a clearance. The ball arrived immediately back in the box, though, and Mendez-Laing took a touch before giving the returning Jordan Archer little chance with a low shot into the bottom corner.

moments of controversy. Millwall thought they had earned a throw-in on their right only for England to point the other way to the confusion of both sides.

Rochdale weren’t about to argue and quickly shifted the ball into the centre of the pitch before Cooper fouled Callum Camps on the edge of the box.

Perhaps distracted and feeling aggrieved, Millwall weren’t alert to Rochdale’s short free-kick to MendezLaing. He took a touch forward before shooting low at Archer, who could only parry to the feet of Ian Henderson for an easy finish. In the technical area Harris had to be calmed by the fourth official.

It was difficult not to feel sorry for England as he was subjected to boos when he walked off at half-time, but both sides had arguably benefitted equally from his errors.

At the break the obvious thought was: would the pandemonium cease in the

second half? Not quite, and England’s judgement and nerve was tested again.

First, Joe Bunney attempted to wriggle through a number of Millwall players before falling in the box but England wasn’t interested. Moments later the same player tumbled as he went for a cross but England again waved play on.

Craig then went into the book for that foul on Mendez-Laing – now on the left – to stop a break. It was only a brief respite. In the next move, after a Rochdale corner, Camps was given too much room on the edge of the box to shoot low past Archer.

It was now Millwall who looked overwhelmed. Mendez-Laing cut through the away defence yet again, Archer produced a brilliant save and Andrews stabbed the ball wide. The offside flag meant it wouldn’t be counted as a sitter.

Harris brought on Mahlon Romeo for Cummings to try to stop the Rochdale tide. O’Brien came close to levelling when his shot from 25 yards had Logan scrambling to save. From the corner there was more mayhem that summed up this game before Rochdale eventually cleared.

Millwall were by now on top, and Wallace got his first goal since his return from Wolves in January, intuitively following up the play to finish just when it appeared Gregory’s low centre would elude everybody.

This was one of Millwall’s games in hand and they knew they needed three points to move back into the top six.

They poured forward and forced a number of late corners without reward.

Typical of this exhilarating game there was one final chance for the away side after the Rochdale defence was spilt open again. Gregory raced through

MILLWALL GOALKEEPER Jordan Archer has revealed he picked up the injury that kept him out for six games just two minutes into the FA Cup win against Leicester City last month.

Archer made his return for the Lions in their incident-packed 3-3 draw at Rochdale on Tuesday night.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Archer, 23, carried on in the fifth-round FA Cup clash against the Foxes that Millwall won in the last minute despite his movement being seriously impeded.

“I tore my quad in the second minute of the game, it was literally the first goal-kick that I felt it,” he said. “But I wasn’t going to come off.

“At the time I didn’t know the extent of the injury and as the game went on it got worse and worse. I went for the scan on the Monday and I had a tear in my thigh.

“It was a long four weeks, a lot of patience needed, it’s been tough to watch from the sidelines but I’m happy to be out there again.

“It goes without saying I’d love to have played in the Spurs game. But the league is the most important and the boys have been keeping clean sheets and winning games.”

Archer said: “It’s not really one you want to come back into. It was a bit open, we weren’t our usual selves in the first half.

We scored two goals and then the game became really stretched.

“Usually we tend to keep our shape and see out games. But it was end to end and it was whoever took their chances.

“It was disappointing to come in at 2-2 after dominating the first half apart from their two chances. But it was effectively going back to 0-0 so the gaffer told us to calm down and regroup.”

Archer made a crucial save to prevent Nathaniel Mendez-Laing making it 4-2 to Rochdale in the second half and Calvin Andrew couldn’t turn home the rebound.

“That’s my job, I’m there to make saves and I was happy to see the follow-up go past the post,” Archer said. “That’s the luck you get sometimes, but, saying that, we could have scored four or five goals in the second half.”

Archer is also now prepared to have to battle with Tom King for a first-team place.

He said: “Kingy was outstanding when he came in. It was his first taste of firstteam football at this level and he kept a number of clean sheets. He’s enjoyed it and he’s going to be pushing me constantly because once you get a taste of first-team football you want more.

“It’s going to be good to have that competition.

“After having four weeks off you want to get that sharpness back, and I definitely got it there. This game had everything. I’m going to go back, recover and prepare for Saturday at Swindon.”

The Lions’ clash with the Robins starts at 1.30pm, giving them the chance to leapfrog Southend in sixth.

But Harris says Millwall must first tighten up at the back after they conceded three goals against Rochdale on Tuesday.

“There will be reminders, we’ll get back on the training ground Thursday, the boys were disappointed with how they performed,” Harris said. “There will be split emotions that we haven’t been as good as we have been and should have won the game, but still scored three goals.

“There will be some individually disappointed people because they haven’t played as well as they can. But it’s a team game, another hurdle getting to 60 points with nine games to go is a good mark.

“What we now have is the biggest game of the season away at Swindon. We play before everybody and we have to go and win the game.

“Swindon will be really dangerous, they’ve got some flair players. We have to go and make sure we’re better defensively but keep the same attacking intent.”

Meanwhile, Harris was dissatisfied with the performance of referee Darren England at Spotland, after the official appeared to award a throw-in to the wrong side just before Rochdale’s second goal.

“I can’t say too much about the referee, but when you’ve got Rochdale fans singing, ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ when he awards them a throw-in, it really says it all.

“But, listen, it happens. There was a lot he got slightly wrong.

Darren is a nice fellow, he’s just had an off-night.”
