In or out? Make an informed choice

S

OME MONTHS back, as we discussed the EU referendum in our office, it was remarked how the debate had been compared to the English Civil War - with families divided, parents set against children. Not likely, we all concluded, somewhat dismissively...

Yet all these weeks down the line, looking back on this fractious and ill-tempered political debate, perhaps the analogy doesn’t appear quite as far-fetched. You probably have to go back to the anger over the second Iraq war to remember such passion about politics, and given that the widespread anger in those days served to bring the general public together, you indeed have to go far further back to find an issue that has proved so utterly divisive.

The ramifications of today’s referendum are so far-reaching that it’s tempting to say that even general elections pale in comparison. How we as a country view ourselves, how we’re viewed by the rest of the world, and all those vital or contentious issues of trade, immigration, rule of law and sovereignty - all this will change massively and possibly irrevocably from today.

This paper has never championed a political party and we’re not about to start taking sides on this one either - we would prefer to let our readers make their own minds up.

What we do ask is that you take the time and trouble to inform yourself. Whilst a renewed interest in political debate among the wider public is warmly to be welcomed, we’re not the first to lament the tone of the EU referendum debate, nor to voice our fears that the well of public discourse has been poisoned. This was the case even before the horrific murder of Jo Cox, which her friend, Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle, writes about in his column for us this week.

Looking at our political leaders in this debate, ‘the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity’ is a line that springs readily to mind.

Yet in spite of this, how informed are you about the vote you will cast today? In an age when it’s far easier to rely on the ‘echo chamber’ of social media to reflect your views and opinions back at you, how much effort have you made to look at the other side of the argument? Will you vote today having considered all the issues, rather than just one, and have you tested all your arguments against opposing ones? Can you honestly say that at any point in the referendum debate, you’ve challenged yourself about what you believe, even if politicians haven’t challenged you?

If the nation at large votes to remain or indeed to exit, and it’s an informed and considered decision, then there will be less room for regret after the decision is made whatever consequences it brings for our country in the days ahead. You wouldn’t rely on instinct to buy a house, or send your kids to a certain school - you’d do your research beforehand. This is no different.

So, if you’ve just been too busy but intend to cast your vote today, it’s not too late to look at all the issues and then make your mind up. WHO KILLED Kate Moss? That’s the question being asked as images emerge of the model ahead of the new Absolutely Fabulous movie which was partly filmed in Southwark.

The film sees the potential death of the British model, after she falls into the Thames from a boat containing a star studded cast with Edina and Patsy seemingly to blame.

Scenes for the new film, released July 1, were filmed on the banks of the

Thames near More London and HMS Belfast.

Photos from the set show Moss smoking and drinking in the river having been on the beach alongside fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, suggesting she might have survived the ordeal.

Perhaps these are the model’s final moments as shots from the set show a shrine to Moss, who may well have been killed by the famous duo.

When asked about the scenes in the cold river last autumn, Moss told The Edit magazine: “People came up to me, using antiseptic wipes and stuff, and I was like, ‘Oh, I have been there,

completely.’ I mean, after being a model for 25 years, that doesn’t bother me…

The beloved TV series was also filmed at Hopton Street and Holland Street near Blackfriars Bridge and Neo Bankside where things go wrong after an “uber fashionable launch party”.

First aired in 1992, Absolutely Fabulous ran for five seasons, with three special episodes shown in 2011 and 2012 to mark the series’ 20th anniversary.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie has been in development for five years and will see around 60 cameos from celebrities, including Cara Delevingne, Nick Grimshaw and Harry Styles.

UNDERWEAR CHARITY RUN

BOROUGH MARKET shoppers may be in for a surprise next Saturday as two ultra-marathon runners race through the area wearing only their underwear.

Marina Ranger and Lucja Leonard will be pounding the streets of south London for the Pink Ribbon Foundation’s charity event on June 25 to promote breast cancer awareness.

The event kicks off at 2pm with a group work out at the Crossfit Gym in Blackfriars before a free session demonstrating self-checks for breast cancer. The public run starts at 3.45pm and marks the launch of the pair’s fundraising effort – to run 500km in just five days.

Both have personal experiences of breast cancer and are looking to raise £20,000 by running from Pieterburren in The Netherlands to The Vaalserberg where Holland, Germany and Belgium’s borders meet.

The runners met during a multi stage event in the Kalahari Desert three years ago and have been good friends ever since.

Both runners will be wearing pink underwear made by Runderwear who are donating 10% of the sales of the product to the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

‘New development puts us in the dark’

FAMILIES LIVING on a Rye Lane housing estate say they have been “misled” by developers proposing new blocks of flats, which have also drawn criticism for not including any affordable homes.

Developers, The Third Quarter, submitted a planning application on May 13 to demolish commercial buildings at 269 Rye Lane, and build three towers up to six storeys tall with 30 new flats.

The company hired another company, Curtin&Co, to carry out its public consultations by canvassing local residents. But a mum from the Cooperative House next door said her community was led to believe there would only be one building, and that the real proposal will “rob them of sunlight”.

Michelle Delgado, 49, said: “We only found out that it’s for three buildings from reading the planning applications documents. None of it was mentioned in the consultation they showed us when they knocked on our doors.

“The new proposal will mean the lovely little kids’ play area we have behind the shops on Rye Lane will be completely surrounded and not have any sun light.

One of Michelle’s other big concerns was the lack of parking for Rye Lane, as well as for the many other housing developments that are set to take off in the area.

“What are people supposed to do in any of these new flats if they want a delivery, or if emergency services vehicles need to get in, or if any of the residents are

FAMILIES AT the 85 Peckham flats condemned for demolition just six years after being built have said negotiations with Wandle Housing Association are “back to square one”.

Residents of Solomon’s Passage learnt from Wandle that the four towers would be demolished on April 25. The association has since told the News that its board members concluded that demolition would be their chosen course of action on March 23.

The damning decision was made after independent investigators, Keegan’s Ltd, discovered subsidence and flooding in the buildings’ basements.

disabled and need a car,” she said.

Michelle also said she would be putting a deputation to the next community council meeting, where she would ask councillors to ensure residents’ views were not “misrepresented”. More than 21 other locals have lodged objections to the council’s website, indicating more of a negative reaction than was suggested by the results of the developer’s consultations.

Local campaign group Peckham Vision has also slammed the proposals for not including any ‘affordable’ homes: which the last Mayor of London defined as being rented at 80 per cent or lower than the market average.

Southwark Council also has a planning policy requiring most large-scale developments to provide 35 per cent of homes at ‘affordable’ rates, unless they can improve that doing so would make a development financially unviable.

However Third Quarter has conceded that even though it could afford to provide cheaper homes it is not obliged due to a snag in the council’s planning policy, which does not require it to because the residual land value is below a certain benchmark. They are going to discuss the issue with Southwark Council.

Eileen Conn, coordinator of Peckham Vision, said: “We are deeply concerned at the over development proposed in several current planning applications in Peckham town centre, and the lack of affordable housing, and the poor quality design.

“We support the residents in Coop House, next door to this site, in their efforts to get a public meeting with the developers and the council.”

Kennington man David Norris, 60, told the News he was forced to go in a bucket rather than his bathroom, after contractors hired by Guinness Partnership repeatedly failed to turn up to emergency plumbing jobs.

“My whole house absolutely stank,” said David. “I didn’t realise what was happening until I noticed water was seeping under the wall.

“A rat must have come up from the sewer and tried to escape. It chewed an absolutely massive hole straight through my drainage pipe that connects to my loo.

“The rat was running around underneath my bath, I could hear it scrambling around going mad trying to escape.”

David said he was at his wits end when four separate appointments had to be cancelled and rescheduled. He was also beleaguered to find that his neighbor had dealt with the same issue.

The four-week ordeal was especially troublesome for David, who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks and does not like leaving his home. He also suffers from Siatica, a chronic nerve-pain in his back, which leaves him unable to drive or walk far from his house in De Laune Street.

Througout the ordeal he felt he had no one whose toilet he could ask to use instead.

Contractors finally came to relieve his problem on Friday. But David says

they have still be unable to fix the tiles around his house, and have not done anything to deal with the rats, meaning they are now free to escape into the rest of his home.

“The house still,” David said “I have been getting through a new can of air freshener once every two days. It’s just not right how they can keep someone waiting when it’s an emergency and then not even fix it properly.”

A spokesperson from The Guinness Partnership said: “When our customers require repairs in their homes we always aim to attend to them as quickly as possible.

“We’re very sorry that our contractor missed their first appointment with Mr Norris, however we’re pleased that the necessary repairs have now been carried out and we’d like to reassure Mr Norris that his toilet remained functional during this time.”

“Half the residents here will have to move out to other Wandle flats outside of Southwark. We suggested Wandle should contact local authorities like Southwark, Lewisham or Lambeth councils to help find us temporary accommodation in the local area, but they’ve also made no effort to do this.

“We don’t want to have to move out

children into different schools. We want to stay in Peckham.”

Last month Ms Leeds told the News Wandle “remain committed to working with them to find long-term solutions at Solomon’s Passage”.

Despite the ongoing complaints aimed at Wandle, a spokesman for the association said they believed £500 would meet the need for residents to look for legal advice.

The spokesman also said residents must continue to pay rent and service charges in order to meet “continued day-to-day running of the buildings, such as lighting, cleaning and grounds maintenance”.

“The cost of [this] would have to be carried by other residents if not paid for by those in Solomon's Passage,” they said.

“However, no costs associated with the investigations, defects, complete refurbishment or construction of new homes will be passed on to residents.”

Wandle also said it had denied residents the chance to read the findings of Keegan’s inspection because Wandle require the details to be kept private, while they consider taking legal action against Green Acre Homes Ltd, who build the flats in 2010 before going into administration.

A DISABLED man was forced to wait four weeks for his housing association to fix his toilet, after rats chewed through sewerage pipes beneath his bathroom.

A mum living in one of the condemned blocks said she was disappointed at the “complete lack of progress”.

The woman, who preferred to speak anonymously, said: “We gave Wandle 20 days to go through the things we wanted to negotiate but they refused nearly all of them.

“We asked them to help with legal fees and all they have offered is £500 each.

Two local MPs go head to head on referendum day

THURSDAY’S REFERENDUM on our membership of the European Referendum is the most important vote in a generation - a critical and defining moment in our nation’s history.

The hundreds of hours of claims and counter-claims, statistics and sound bites of the last month boil down to two simple questions: First, are we better off tackling the most challenging issues of today and the future alone, or working together with other countries?

Second, do we trust a post-Cameron Tory Brexit government to fight to serve and protect the people of South London?

Economic prosperity, tax avoidance by multi-nationals, international security and climate change are just some of the most challenging issues facing the UK and none of them can, or will be solved by an isolationist UK. More than 650,000 London jobs depend on our membership of the Single Market, while tax avoidance and climate change will only be effectively addressed by working closely together with our international partners.

On the second question, the record of the Tories over the past six years speaks

for itself in terms of their appalling cuts to local government, the perilous financial state of the NHS and the unacceptable Housing and Planning Act. The EU helped to defend Londoners from the worst excesses of the Thatcher government and will continue to help protect us until we have the opportunity to elect a Labour government in 2020.

The EU provides rights at work, including maternity leave and the working time directive which provides vital protection for all of us, including our hard working junior doctors. The EU introduced the air quality laws which Sadiq Khan will use to help clean up our city and Europe also provides key consumer benefits, like dramatically bringing down mobile phone charges abroad.

The EU is not perfect, but underpinning my support for it is the strong principle that we do better when we work together to resolve our problems – whether in our communities here in Lambeth and Southwark or internationally within the EU. We need to stay and fight for the type European Union that the UK needs and play a leadership role in making it work to solve the challenges we face in the 21st century – we are all stronger IN!

Over my 27 years as a local MP I have seen the EU take more powers over our elected UK Parliament and we are regularly outvoted by the other 27 countries.

The original trading partnership idea that people voted for over 40 years ago has changed utterly; now our courts can be overruled by an EU court and our Parliament has to accept laws introduced by unelected Commissioners.

Unlike our Governments (or individual MPs like me) they cannot be kicked out every few years.

EU rules allow anyone from any of the member states to come here, driving down wages for our own citizens across the country. Commonwealth citizens are discriminated against making it very difficult for even those with long family ties to visit. Leaving the EU would

allow us to have a fairer system that could focus on skilled workers rather than cheap labour.

All our rights at work and protections were won by working people and trade unionists, not the EU. They are enshrined in British law and we can vote out any Government that tries to change them.

We spend £10 billion a year to support this dysfunctional bureaucracy in the EU that hasn’t had its accounts approved in 20 years.

Just as Labour giants like Tony Benn and Barbara Castle warned, the EU has become an anti-democratic body supporting big business and global corporations. If we leave we could trade across the world and be a proud, independent nation co-operating with other countries again.

Your vote really matters and I hope that you will join me in setting our country free from the shackles of the EU by voting to leave on 23rd June.

‘Last minute’ overseas postal vote delivery triggers fears that hundreds could miss out DULWICH

OVER 300 Southwark voters living abroad might be denied the right to vote in the EU.

Hundreds of people in the borough could be denied the right to vote in this week’s EU referendum, due to the dates their postal vote packs have been sent out.

A man on the electoral roll in East Dulwich, temporarily working abroad outside of the EU, said he was concerned he had not been given enough time to send back his vote. “Based on the dates the council sent the postal vote forms, anyone outside of Europe is not likely to get the papers in time to send them back by the deadline,” he said.

Despite applying for a postal vote a month before the referendum, the man – who wished to remain anonymous – said Southwark

Council only sent his pack on 14 June – less than ten days before the deadline to return them to the UK. Over 300 overseas voters were sent their packs on that day.

“Given it takes up to seven working days for Royal Mail first class to arrive in any location outside of Europe, this basically means I have no vote as I cannot return the forms in time,” he said.

“It does not seem fair to be disenfranchised simply because of an administrative issue, when I applied for postal well in advance.”

The angry voter said he had received documents and personally paid for a courier to ship his documents express delivery back to the UK on Monday morning: “It is touch and go and I'm doing this because I take my right to vote seriously, but can't see it being healthy for democracy that one could get priced out of a vote. For a neck and neck race, this is a scary

proposition.”

He also described the council as “tone deaf on this issue” – and that they suggested several times to use a proxy vote, although he made it clear this was something he could not do. “My sense is that they have not been willing to acknowledge that they haven't thought the process through at all,” he said.

A council spokesperson said it had abided by all timeframes and procedures required by the Electoral Commission. The first “batch” of postal vote packs, for those registered by 15 May was sent on 24 May. “The number of overseas electors in the first run was 763,” she said. “After that, the next run of all postal voters, including overseas voters, was despatched on 14 June.”

She said this included 329 postal packs to overseas electors.

Roads to close for ballot box delivery

TWO BERMONDSEY roads will close for three hours on Thursday June 23 to help “facilitate” the referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union.

Both Barnham Street and Shand Street near Southwark Council on Tooley Street will shut to traffic from 9pm to 11:59pm to

ensure the delivery of ballot boxes goes undisturbed.

The council’s offices on Tooley Street will be responsible for tallying up Southwark’s votes on the night as the world waits to hear what the UK’s future position in the EU will be.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on June 23 for people to either vote to “Remain” or “Leave” the European Union.

FISHER FC’S manager has slammed Southwark Council, calling it “incompetent” over its handling of the club’s return to Rotherhithe, after their new stadium was vandalised.

The team’s new Salter Road ground has had its gate smashed, goal nets snapped and stands graffitied and they have been told they cannot play any games there until at least September.

First team manager Dean Harrison told the News of his outrage at the way the transition was being handled and called the situation a “farce” that “reeks of incompetence”.

He said: “The council are now saying we can't play any pre-season games at the ground because the dressing rooms aren't fitted out. They're also saying we won't be able to play league games until at least September because they haven't put a management team in place to run the facility.

“Our season starts in August, which they've known from the start, so we now have to hope that we can find a ground to play at and hope the league will be sympathetic to our cause!

“Bearing in mind the keys were handed over to the council in March, the whole situation is a complete farce and reeks of incompetence on their behalf.”

Since 2004 Fisher has shared a stadium with Dulwich Hamlet FC at Champion Hill and returning to the north of the borough has always been a goal.

But even though the pitch itself is finished, there will now be an open tender process to decide the leaseholder, which could leave Fisher as tenants at their own ground.

Stephen Evans, a Fisher FC board member, said: "Getting the new stadium built has been done in partnership with the council. But we are concerned about delays and uncertainties since it was completed, and the damage to it.

“We are also concerned by reports that Fisher could end up just as tenants - this will affect the viability of club and wasn't what people were led to expect.

“We understand that the Council will begin a procurement process shortly. It's vital that, whatever its outcome, Fisher are at its heart and not just tenants - a sustainable community-based Fisher was the driver for the facility in the first place."

A council spokesperson said: “We are keen to get Fisher FC into their new home ground as soon as possible. We have been in contact with the club and will continue to work with them to plan ahead for the new season.

Packed services for Sister Cecily

BERMONDSEY’S SISTER Cecily Dunn was cremated at Honor Oak on Friday June 17, after a loving funeral mass at Sacred Heart and a local mass on Thursday at the St Peter & the Guardian Angels Church.

Around 200 people attended the Sacred Heart mass and cremation, with coaches of mourners coming to pay their respects.

Sister Cecily was adored through her Bosco Centre in Bermondsey, where she touched the lives of the many who passed through it.

She died on May 24, shortly after being diagnosed with an aggressive cancer three weeks prior.

Fr David O'Malley SDB, who conducted the funeral and memorial mass, said in his homily: “You may want to recall that she deflected a post office robbery in the local area by facing down the armed attackers.

“You might want to recall her ability to acquire the use of the adjacent park for young people by the straightforward process of padlocking it and cleaning it up.

“You could be recalling that with her community she took in a family of babies and children, rather than have them split up, so the sisters became mothers for a few months to a number of infants.

“Or you might want to remember the DIY asbestos removal from The Bosco centre to ensure it stayed open when threatened with a long closure.

“Cecily lived out, every day, her deepest desire to see young people come to life, to uncover their potential, to remove the obstacles to their growth.

“That was her vocation: to uncover in each young person the face of God, to help them to see how precious they were, how loveable they always are whatever mess they get themselves into.

“That was her vocation, lived out with a wild optimism and a deep passionate concern for the young that was never too far from anger or frustration.”

The death of a black legend

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to the late Sam King MBE, the first black mayor of Southwark who become renowned for his contributions to London’s black culture.

Mr King’s death was announced by his granddaughter on Saturday. He passed away at the St Christopher’s Hospice at

the age of 90.

Perhaps the most pivotal point in his life was his decision in 1944, aged 18, to leave his farmland home in Portland, Jamaica, to join the RAF as an engineer.

He returned to UK in 1948 aboard the famous SS Windrush, and moved to Sears Street in Camberwell to become a postman. The first ever black publication, the West Indian Gazette, was co-founded in Brixton by Mr King in 1958. That

same year, he and his colleague at the Gazette, organised the first incarnation of the Notting Hill Carnival, which went by the name of The Caribbean Carnival, at St Pancras Town Hall.

Southwark Council will open a book of condolences on Thursday June 23 at their Tooley Street office and at the Canada Water and Peckham libraries.

£6.5 million was allocated to hospital’s A&E in 2008 after Maudsley cut backs

Eight year wait at King’s on mental health spend EXCLUSIVE

EIGHT YEARS after King’s Hospital received £6.5m for a new mental health emergency department, its bosses have only recently spent the money.

The News reported on May 5 that campaigners and Dulwich and West Norwood MP, Helen Hayes, were pursuing King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust’s board members for answers.

Ms Hayes previously told the News she would demand a public inquiry if King’s refused to answer: “What became of that money? Was it actually allocated? What was it spent on and why?”

King’s was given the £6.5m in 2008 after the dedicated mental health emergency department (ED) at Maudsley Hospital was shut down. The money was intended for King’s to refurbish its A&E, to deal with an overspill of emergency mental health patients from Maudsley that have stretched its A&E ever since.

The News has now learnt that board members of King’s Trust finally approved the last of the funding in April, in time for the new financial year.

Asked when the new mental health emergency department, with a new discreet entrance, and other specialist facilities, would finally be finished, the trust was still only able to say they would make “significant progress” before April 2017.

Tom White (pictured), of the Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG), has long campaigned for improved mental health emergency care in the borough since Maudsley’s emergency departments was shut.

Tom said: “We’re conscious that King’s is already in the red with its finances, but the A&E at King’s is not the right place for mental health sufferers to be treated when they are in crisis.

“These people suffering serious mental health problems need help now. We will be very surprised with how King’s will ever be able to facilitate an emergency department for people in mental health crises to the standard we need. They are under-resourced, understaffed and

under-financed.

“The Care Quality Commission clearly states that mental-health sufferers must be treated in the right environment. A busy A&E such as King’s doesn’t fit this category. No one would want someone struggling with mental health problems to have to use the same A&E as someone with a physical injury.

“SPAG is still fighting to get Maudsley Hospital’s mental health emergency department reopened, and for it to be given the money it needs to do this.

“We will be approaching Dr Jonty Heaversedge, [chair of Southwark’s Clinical Commissioning Group] to flag up our concerns with him and hope that we can get finally reopened.”

The News approached King’s for an explanation of why sufferers have been kept waiting for eight years. A spokeswoman for the Trust said: “We are sorry that the redevelopment of our Emergency Department (ED) has taken longer than expected.

“One of the key reasons for the delay is the fact that we have to keep the ED running 24-hours-a-day, all year round.

We now see over 450 patients a day, which makes completing even minor improvement works to the department a major logistical and practical challenge.”

“King's and SLaM are committed to offering the best available services that work in an integrated way. The new mental health facilities will provide greater support for patients by supplementing the existing service. We are confident the improvement works, once finished, will enhance even further the care we provide to this specific group of patients, as well as others presenting to the ED.”

Elephant restaurant fined for infestation

A RESTAURANT in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre has been fined after inspectors found an “infestation” of cockroaches and dirty kitchen equipment.

Shamim Uddin, who manages to Castle Brasserie, appeared at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court on June 8.

Uddin was made to pay £3,476.40 after pleading guilty to contravening Trading Standards regulations.

An investigation by Southwark Council found that Uddin had hired staff who were not sufficiently trained, while keeping dirty food-preparation areas with dirty and greasy utensils.

There were also areas of the restaurant having structural disrepair, and it was found that Uddin had failed to act on an infestation of cockroaches.

The council’s investigation was triggered after it received complaints about the lack of pest control from customers last year. The Castle Brassiere was forced to close for three days to carry out improvements.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities and safety, said: “I hope all businesses take notice of the consequences of flouting food safety regulations and our commitment to enforcing against irresponsible business owners.”

Stabbed outside Walworth boozer

A MAN was stabbed outside a Walworth pub on King and Queen Street on June 16 and was taken to a south London hospital.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 8:16pm to The Gladstone following reports of a man in his 20s suffering a “stab injury”.

The man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening and enquiries are ongoing.

The fight against HIV support

SUPPORT SERVICES for people living with HIV are under threat, and campaigners are urging people to speak out against the cuts, writes Emma Finamore...

Recent proposals put forward jointly by the Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Sexual Health Board threaten to cut funding for the Terrence Higgins Trust and METRO – organisations offering advice and counselling to people living with HIV – across all three boroughs, and bring the specialist services into mainstream NHS facilities.

Local campaigners have pushed for the consultation period on the proposals to be extended. Originally set to end on 25 May, it is now open until 29 June. If the proposals go ahead, specialist HIV services will disappear from Southwark by October.

A CHARITY walk after party for a young Bermondsey woman with incurable cancer will take place on July 3 at the St Peter and The Guardian Angels’ Church, Paradise Street.

The charity walk is for Tilly Browne, 24, who was diagnosed four years ago with breast cancer and Li–Fraumeni syndrome, an extremely rare disorder which leads to early-onset cancer.

While the breast cancer can be treated, Li-Fraumeni cannot. The ultrarare condition, which affects less than 500 families across the globe, will

continue to plague Tilly with cancer for the rest of her life – proving fatal unless a cure is discovered.

The News previously reported how after Tilly was diagnosed, her mum Janet got tested and was also diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as her sister being diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Friends and family of Tilly organised ‘Tilly’s Walk for Life’ to help raise money for travel costs, treatment, and the George Pantziarka TP53 Trust, a charity supporting families dealing with Li-Fraumeni.

Tilly’s aunt, Suzan Crawley, previously told the News: “It’s vital everyone comes together to support them, they have all been in and out of

hospital at the same time. This is where friends come in.

“They are an inspiration, they’ve just marched on and got on with everything. And the people at Guys’ Hospital have been brilliant – they even said they might name a bed after the family.”

The walk, which 70 people have already signed up to, starts at 9am on July 3 on the green at Westminster Bridge and will end at Tower Bridge.

The after party will run from 1-7pm and feature a bouncy castle, face painting, raffles, auctions, DJ Noel and much more to come.

A ROTHERHITHE fencing star battled 28 opponents including an “arch rival” to come out top in the Girls Under-Eleven Épée final of the England Youth Championship 2016 on June 18-19.

Lauren Ryder-Garcia, 11, trains with Central London Fencing Club in Pimlico and took part in the popular fencing competition in Hatfield, Hertfordshire along with 750 participants.

The competition consisted of three different classes for each sword type that can be used, with an ‘épée’ being the largest and heaviest and a ‘foil’ being flexible and weighing under a pound.

Lauren (pictured second from left) placed tenth in the Under-Eleven Foil final on June 18 and surged ahead to come first in the Under-Eleven Épée final on June 19.

Ana Garcia, Lauren’s mum, said: “I never thought she would win it. She had an arch rival in the final whom she couldn’t beat but she did.

“It’s a great achievement not just because she won but because we aren’t a wealthy family like the others who take part. It’s a fantastic achievement, it’s really great.

“She didn’t even know what fencing was a couple of years ago!”

MP Helen said: “I first met Jo a few weeks before the 2015 general election at an event that had been organised for Labour Party candidates. Jo was almost exactly the same age as me, we both had young children and we were both entering Parliament at the same

“She was an adventurer, who having lived all over the world, chose to settle in a houseboat on the Thames.

“Jo was also a mum to two beautiful, very young children. She always referred to them as ‘my babies’ and she would dash home as often as she could in the early evening to put them to bed before returning to Parliament to vote.

“It is unbearably sad that they will now grow up without their mummy.

My thoughts are with Jo’s husband Brendan, her parents and her babies. Jo cannot be brought back, but they will know that she has touched many lives in her life and now in her tragic death, they will know that she was loved and respected by all that knew her, and that she lived her life to the full, seeking to

The News previously reported how both Harriet Harman, MP for Camberwell and Peckham, and Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, honoured Jo. MP Neil, who joined parliament at the same time as Jo and was a close friend, told the News that the attack was a “horrible day for democracy”.

He said: “A truly grim day. Jo was a real gem – always a ready smile, a bundle of energy and a clear mind for

After 65 years in the chair, locals put a real smile on dentist Peter’s face PECKHAM

A PECKHAM dentist who retired after 65 years has spoken of his gratitude for the warm wishes he has received from all across the borough.

Peter Frost, 80, said farewell to the Birwood Dental Care centre in Peckham Rye on June 10, and has received dozens of cards and gifts.

Peter said: “It was quite difficult leaving, and I have had about 50 letters.

“There are people who I have seen coming here for years. People who first came to me when they were teenagers and now they’re retiring themselves.

“I also have some very loyal customers.

There’s one person who comes all the way from Cornwall just to have his check-ups here, and another from Eastbourne.

“My very last job at the practice was fixing a woman’s dentures.” He added that it was an “amazing feeling” knowing he had finished the job.

Peter, who is married with seven grandchildren, took over the practice in 1969 and became its principle dentist, all the way until 2011.

“I then sold it five years ago, and it became the Birwood Dental Care centre, but I carried on practising there. the building itself has been a dental practice since 1934,” he said.

He held his leaving party on June 3 at the Clock House Pub in Peckham Rye, which he says has been his favourite haunt for many years.

The dental veteran, who is also chair of the Peckham Society, now says he will spend the rest of his career contributing to research and with his teaching at Guy’s Hospital.

“I’m still continuing with my research,”

Peter said.

“I’m going out to Jerusalem in September to a conference. I’ll also be returning the Birwood Centre occasionally to pick up all the vast amounts of data I have collected about procedures I have carried out.”

He added that all of it has helped contribute to the 25 research papers he has published throughout his career.

PECKHAM LOOKS set to become a hot spot for young acting talent, after the prestigious Mountview Academy submitted plans for a huge new campus.

Mountview hope to expand from their base in Wood Green to a parcel of brownfield land called Eagle Wharf, behind Peckham Library.

Last week the academy submitted its plans to Southwark Council, with details of nineteen studios, two television studios, a radio studio, and 200-seat theatre and an 80-seat theatre studio.

The academy’s commercial director, Matthew Turnball, told the News: “We have been working on this for about eighteen months, and if we get approval we would hope to be able to finish construction in time for the September 2018.

“We have been in talks with local people and places like the Bussey Building, the Peckham Plex and Theatre Peckham. We chose Peckham for its fantastic transport links, because it’s a thriving town centre and because it’s a very creative area.”

Mountview’s Chairman, Vikki Heywood CBE, said: “Mountview will be both a dynamic public building and a thriving and diverse training environment.

“World-class facilities will enable our local, national and international students to excel, working with leading industry professionals. We will also welcome thousands of young people and members of the local community to the building each year for classes, events and to enjoy shows.”

The four-storey building, covering 95 square metres land, has been designed by Carl TurnerArchitects.

The Academy will offer undergraduate, masters and foundation-level qualifications.

The campus will typically be open from 9am to 6pm each day and available for commercial and community use on weekends and holiday times.

A MUCH-LOVED Bermondsey “gentle giant” who was at risk of having a pauper’s funeral will be put to rest by his friends on July 4.

Meurig Gomer Wyn-Roberts, known as Gomer Roberts, was found dead above the Greyhound Pub, Peckham in May but the police and the

Coroner’s Court were not able to find his next of kin.

Amid fears that he would be buried by Southwark Council, close friends started to raise funds for a proper funeral and his body was released to them on June 15.

The date has now been set and plans are for people to leave Bermondsey’s Old Bank Pub, Southwark Park Road at 10:45am to go to a service at 11:30am at Honor Oak where he will be cremated.

help settle the cost will be held at a later date.

Donations for Gomer’s funeral has already reached more than £1,200 of the £3,000 needed with people giving cash donations at the Old Bank Pub and in other businesses around the high street.

Any extra money will be donated to charity as Gomer used to raise money for children and the armed forces.

The News previously reported how friends were left in the dark by the Coroner’s Court over what would happen next to Gomer’s body as they

were unable to find his next of kin.

After repeated attempts by the News to find out more information, it was finally announced that his body had been given to Southwark Social Services meaning a pauper’s funeral was likely.

With one more attempt to find his relatives involving a massive online appeal in Wales having no luck, the community took it upon itself to give Gomer the burial he deserves.

Friends of park offended by ‘£600 donation to film Sense8’

A SOUTHWARK Council cabinet member has been criticised for an “insulting gesture” after they offered a £600 donation to a group while addressing their opposition to Southwark Park being used by a production company.

The council approved plans for the park to be used from June 23 for four days as a production hub while the second season of Netflix’s sci-fi series Sense8 is filmed.

But The Friends of Southwark Park group has strongly objected to the plans as they claim it would see 70 vehicles arrive early in the morning and leave late at night at the park, causing disruption.

In an email seen by the News a Southwark Council Cabinet Member addressed the group’s concerns before adding that “there is also due to be a donation of £600 to the Friends”.

Pat Kingwell, secretary of The Friends of Southwark Park, reacted: “I personally find it an insulting gesture and a complete misunderstanding of the aims and values of our group.

“We do what we do to protect, enhance and promote the park, not to take money from an activity we disagree with. What sort of friends of

the park would that make us?”

Southwark Council gave permission to the production company to use the park as they believed the “filming opportunity outweigh the down sides”.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Employment and Culture, said: “I fully appreciate the Friends’ concerns and as a result of these we have considered whether there are any other options available to move this facility.

“I know the Friends will be disappointed that we have not found any other options, but even so we believe that the benefits of the filming opportunity outweigh the down sides.

“By facilitating the production team, we’re able to secure investment to contribute towards improving and maintaining Southwark Park and other arts and culture projects for the wider community, such as Bermondsey Carnival.

“The production base will be contained within a relatively small section of the park, so visitors can enjoy the park as normal. We’ve also put measures in place to limit disruption as much as possible.

“All vehicles associated with the filming will arrive before the park opens and leaving late in the evening and film unit traffic marshals will be monitoring vehicles within the site.”

TWO GOGGLEBOX stars abseiled 100ft down the Golden Jubilee Wing of King’s College Hospital on June 17 to raise money to fund vital equipment.

Steph and Dom Parker, known as the “Posh Couple”, took part in the abseil as their 15-year-old son Max has epilepsy and has been treated at King’s since he was diagnosed aged four months.

The couple said: “We're delighted to support King's College Hospital where our son has been treated by the brilliant Dr David McCormick.

“Fundraising for the hospital helps fund life-saving equipment, lifechanging research and better facilities – above and beyond what the NHS can provide.”

The celebrity duo were joined by 81-year-old Nora Higgins from Peckham, who received surgery for skin cancer last year.

Nora said: “Being diagnosed with skin cancer, especially of the face, is really scary. You think you’ll be scarred for life, but not so!

“I was a nervous wreck when I had my first appointment but the friendliness, the empathy and the dedication of the whole team was inspiring and reassuring. I cannot thank them enough.”

Around 100 patients, supporters and staff abseiled 100ft down the hospital’s Golden Jubilee Wing.

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s Chair, Lord Bob Kerslake, also took the plunge and did the abseil.

Lord Kerslake said: “This event perfectly showcases the dedication of all our supporters and staff.

“All the money raised will go back into our services so we can continue to provide excellent care for our patients in the environment they deserve.”

TOWER BRIDGE Care Home hosted an open day on June 17 as part of the National Care Home Open Day for the public see how it is run and to raise money for charity.

The latest designs for a proposed café in Southwark Park were revealed on June 15. The plans would feature a concave, curved, concrete building with views of the lake.

Home to 94 residents, the day featured a visit from a Pearly King and Queen, a cake sale, a dancing session and a competition to find the most inspiring life story of one of the residents.

Paulette Dixon, one of the organisers, said: “We’ve had a few people come from Southwark Council and quite a few volunteers and relatives who all had a nice day.

“There was arts and crafts and also a cake sale. We had a dance troupe come in too. It’s all a good opportunity for people to come in and see what a care home is like.”

A fundraising target of £100 was set for Marie Curie, a charity that provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness.

THE FABULOUS front door to a Peckham apartment will be auctioned to charity this summer in memory of its famous drag queen owner, who died of cancer in June 2015.

Stephen Bacon, known on stage as Lady La Rue, was living in the apartment on Evan Cook Close towards the end of his life. The door was painted by Stephen’s close friend and artist Tristan Peneiro to cheer him up, and shows Stephen as his Ms La Rue moniker.

Just over one year since his death, the door will be auctioned to raise money for the charity, Cancer is a Drag, which Stephen’s turned to for support during his chemotherapy.

Bermondsey man Alan Bugg, who founded the charity in 2012, said: “We were over the moon when the woman living Stephen’s old flat got in touch with us and her housing association, Wandle, and helped us put on this auction.

“The drag queen who’s standing with me in the photo is also Stephen’s old flat mate, Nathan Kiely, whose stage name is Topsie Redfern.

“Stephen was an amazing beneficiary of Cancer is a Drag. He and I became very close friends while we were both undergoing chemotherapy.

“This auction is a fantastic way to remember him and raise money to support others on their journey.”

Ahead of the auction, the door will be displayed in the foyer of the Chelsea Theatre during the run of drag musical ‘Heels of Glory’ in June 2016 before being taken to the Legends Bar in Stephen’s hometown of Brighton.

The winner of the auction will be announced at ‘Cancer is a Drag Presents: A Cabaret’ at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Wednesday August 31.

DANCERS FROM Bermondsey’s Carragher Academy stole the show at the British Open Irish Dance Championship on May 28, winning a number of titles.

Saskia Larking and Katie Draper both took first place positions in the competition, with Megan Rogers winning the heavy reel title.

Adding to the academy’s success, Katy Foxcroft placed second and Sienna Nottingham entered the competition at just fourteen months old.

Teacher Jessica Carragher said: “I’m so proud of all our dancers’ achievements, especially our three champions Saskia, Katie and Megan.

“All the dancers worked really hard at class and the extra hours of practise leading up to championships paid off.

Robert Gibson, 45, left his home at 3pm on Monday, June 13, and was last seen on the same day at a Co-Op on Central Hill.

Officers have since been told that Robert was seen at 6:45pm catching the catamaran from Portsmouth to Ryde, where he thought to have then taken a train from Ryde Pier Head toward Lake and Shanklin.

Officers have released a CCTV image in the hope that somewhere may know where he is staying.

Robert is known to enjoy coastal walks and often stays on campsites.

Police and his family are growing increasingly concerned for his safety and wellbeing.

Robert is described as white, 6ft tall, of slim build with grey / silver hair. He wears black rimmed Prada glasses.

Salmon Youth Centre secures boiler funds

A CHARITY football match raised hundreds of pounds for Bermondsey’s Ruby Longman on June 18 to go toward reaching the £10,000 needed for an eyegaze computer to help her communicate.

Ballers, a Rotherhithe football company that offers coaching and mentoring, hosted a match between parents and coaches to help the campaign launched in May. Timi Samples, Ruby’s mum, said: “It was an amazing day and they raised £506.44.

How amazing! They are such lovely people and are superstars.

“It's so moving how much help we are

receiving to reach our target I cannot thank these amazing people enough. It’s so touching Jamie Mehmet arranged it all.”

Ruby, ten, suffers from the rare Rett syndrome, which has prevented her from walking and talking since she was a baby and her family hope they will soon be able to communicate with her.

Jamie Mehmet, of Ballers, said: “We’ve been set up for two years now and every year we try to have a charity tournament for a local charity.

“Last year we did it for Evelina Children’s Hospital and this year it was for Ruby who is very close to us.

“It went really well and the coaches won again! The end score was 3-0 in the final.

We like to support local people and we try to bring everyone together as a

community.”

More than half of the £10,000 needed for the computer has been raised so far t h r o u g h generous public donations and fundraisers.

The News recently reported that Ruby’s school, Alfred Salter Primary School, will hold a fundraiser on July 5 to help reach the target.

BERMONDSEY’S SALMON Youth Centre has received a funding boost from The Veolia Environmental Trust to help install a new boiler.

The club on Old Jamaica Road was given £14,603 for the installation after the existing heating system was damaged by a malfunction and leak.

The grant is one of 43 awarded by the trust and will ensure the centre can continue to offer 32 weekly sessions for around 2,000 children, young adults and their families.

The centre’s director, Sam Adofo, said: “This grant is fantastic news for the centre. The building is a focus for

many activities and the new boiler will mean it will be a warm, comfortable space for those taking part in them.”

The Salmon Youth Centre has provided a place for young people in Southwark since 1906 after Reverend “Pa” Salmon saw the abject poverty affecting London’s inner city.

The Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Paul Taylor, said: “This project will transform the centre, making it more welcoming to all.

“We are seeing an ongoing reduction in the amount of funds that we can award, so the centre team needs to be congratulated on securing this grant in an extremely competitive environment.”

A TRAGIC LOSS

AST MAY Jo Cox and I were elected to Parliament. She has served just a year and was murdered last week in her constituency.

Jo and I wrote an article together, voted together, had offices just a few doors along from each other in Westminster and organised an event together, held just days before she was killed.

She worked on the issues she cared about, from her time before Parliament at Oxfam and beyond, tackling child poverty, better offering help to those in need and fleeing persecution. She was a principled, decent MP who worked hard for her constituents in Batley and Spen. She grew up in Batley and the town has lost a daughter – as Parliament has lost a genuinely excellent Member. Her contribution has been cut short and we will never know what she may have been capable of achieving with more time.

But it is with her family that my thoughts and prayers reside. She had two young children and a husband. They are missing their mother and wife. No one should lose a family member simply because they were doing their job. She loved her role and was proud to serve her community. She was courageous and, despite threats after her vote to intervene in Syria, was determined to remain accessible to her constituents. No MP should do anything different and we cannot allow Jo's loss to end the willingness to engage. I hold surgery meetings across the constituency: from Canada Water library to the Blackfriars Settlement; from the Old Kent Road Somali mosque to the Haddon Hall Baptist church; and from St Mungos to ASDA. My accessibility to you will not be diminished in response to the vile assault on my friend.

That her life, which was defined by hope, love and warmth, could be ended so brutally, coldly and in an act of utter hate is despicable. The motive of her killer is unclear but witness accounts suggest her murderer yelled 'Britain First' as he shot and stabbed Jo. Jo's murder suggests that, for some, the EU referendum debate has become so simplistic that it resembles the Nazi scapegoating campaigns of the 1930s. That is unacceptable. The generations that fought the Nazis would, I think, be ashamed at that level of debate.

Whatever the motive behind her murder, the outcome is the tragic loss of a wonderful MP at the hands of a man who set out determined to silence a voice of hope and love. Our response must be to shut down those who peddle lies and myths to try and justify hatred. No longer can people pretending to represent British values expect us to swallow their vile brand of malice. We must unite and ensure Jo's principles of respect, hope and love shine through.

Save Southwark Woods should engage I WRITE in reply to Blanche Cameron’s letter (‘Why are graves being sold off as ‘new’ plots?’, News 16th June). I will leave the personal attacks to one side as most residents are more concerned about ensuring we have a sustainable burial strategy. But let me get a few facts straight first.

On 2nd June Ms Cameron, on behalf of the Save Southwark Woods (SSW) campaign, emailed a series of six questions to me to answer as the new Cabinet Member with responsibility for burial strategy. I replied answering all her questions fully on 7th June. I informed her too that I was re-establishing the Cemeteries Stakeholder Group and formally inviting SSW to be a part of the Group to consider not just the immediate issues around the Camberwell Old Cemetery but also determining Southwark’s future burial strategy. I also wrote that I was more than happy to meet with her and SSW directly to discuss their concerns.

I did not receive a response. Instead on 10th June SSW issued a press release in which only my response to one question was contained and then omitting a crucial final sentence which distorted the whole meaning of my reply. Then the letter was published in the SN. Call me oldfashioned but surely this isn’t the way to do business, especially if you are trying to persuade someone of your own arguments?

SSW conflates two issues. The ‘reuse’ and the ‘topping-up’ of burial space. The practice of topping-up has occurred in cemeteries for hundreds of years in London and around the UK. New burials in the Wood Vale area (Area F) of Camberwell Old Cemetery take place in topped-up soil, over an old area that was previously used for public burial. This is not re-use, it does not result in the disturbance of human remains, there are legal requirements regarding the depth of undisturbed earth between burials and is carried out entirely lawfully

and having undergone proper consultation. On ‘re-use’ it is not our practice but in line with the results of a previous public consultation which favoured it we will be holding a separate public consultation exercise on it later this year.

Legally although no grave in any local authority cemetery is owned forever, let me be absolutely clear, we don’t sell burial plots on our website. So it's incorrect to say we're selling off the graves of the poor.

Southwark will always explain the situation of any plot to relatives: virgin ground or not, consecrated or not, with or without limitation on the type of memorial etc. We will also continue to engage with funeral directors to ensure families are fully appraised of their options.

I come to this new Cabinet role with no pre-determined view and open to review the present strategy and projects. I believe our cemeteries to be public assets. Not in the financial sense but in terms of heritage and culture. We should be proud of our cemeteries and like parks give them a central role in our communities. This is why it is important to re-convene the Cemeteries Stakeholder Group to ensure all of our projects, current and future, aim to balance the continued provision of burial for as long as we realistically can, in existing cemeteries, alongside the conservation of heritage and the restoration of a natural environment.

It is a difficult balance to make but we must start, I’m certain most will agree, by cleaning-up dumped waste and contaminated land and bring back into public use areas that were previously out-of-bounds for new burials including woodland and meadow burial to improve our cemeteries for both the living and the dead. I hope all interested parties, including SSW, will engage positively in this process.

Why have debts risen as attendance soared?

Liam Hickey (letters 16 June) or his fellow football committee volunteers who keep Dulwich Hamlet going from match to match. They do sterling work.

But I must question their judgement. Most of them must remember the decision by government inspector Nicholas Hamman in 2003 to dismiss the Homebase appeal they backed.

They too wanted to build on the pitch and move the stadium to Green Dale. Liam would do well to re-read this.

Hammam made it very clear that the 'special circumstances' Liam quotes where building was permitted on Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) did not apply in the case of Dulwich Hamlet. There is no evidence they could apply now.

Hamman also said: "The relocated stadium would be a serious encroachment .... A permanent and harmful intrusion on a significant open space. Its importance justifies a presumption against development." If anything the importance of the MOL has increased as nature took over during 22 years of total neglect by the football club leaseholders.

Would ignoring the precedent prompt a judicial review if council officers recommended approval?

Also because the minimum dimensions of a new stadium are much bigger than the existing AstroTurf area, requiring a 10foot wall to prevent people watching for free from the higher land.

We have a right to expect a little more thought from the committee about the realities. Hamman was critical about the then management of the club, when attendance was "250 to 350". It is now an average of 1,250 a game rising to more than 2,500 for a number of games, which should guarantee a viable future for the club, along with the ancillary rise in bar sales.

Yet a Hadley consultant said recently that the club debts now totalled about £400,000. This compares with the £150,000 when Hadley took over.

HE STRONG winds and low cloud that characterised the weather throughout May spilled into June; and with torrential rain kept temperatures low making it feel more like November. Large numbers of new leaves were stripped from trees in the gales and deposited on pavements and roads.

But just a few days into June, temperatures quickly soared to 25 degrees (C) bringing the sun, abruptly followed by unsettled, humid and stormy weather. These conditions are ideal for weeds which continue to grow quickly and need removing before they set seed. Slugs and snails seem much more numerous this year; use an environmentally friendly product such as ‘Advanced Slug Killer’ (available from www.organiccatalogue.com) to control the slug and snail population; otherwise they will inflict significant damage to a whole range of plants.

Following the cherry blossom month of May, June delights with a profusion of flowers – everywhere is overflowing with growth and a range of plants to enjoy.

Elderflower, which is rarely cultivated, can be seen on embankments, hedgerows and waste ground; the flat clusters of creamy flowers make it instantly recognisable. The thorny Pyracantha, grown for its orange-red berries in autumn, is now covered in white flowers. Philadelphus (Mock orange) produces lots of pure white little blooms with a feint exotic perfume. The Catalpa (Indian Bean) is a tall, elegant tree usually seen in parks and larger gardens. By the end of June it is covered in white flowers and with its large heart shape leaves is stunning.

Tillia - the Lime tree has little bunches of pale, yellow flowers grouped between its small heart shaped leaves - the perfume is intoxicating, there is no other description for this spicy honey scent.

One of the stranger flowers to be seen at this time is the Calla lily; described as a bulb but is more like a tuber, it produces a curled flower which is a bract (type of leaf) surrounding a spike covered in minute flowers. The overall effect is that of one large flower-head. Calla comes in many colours but the white ones are more usually seen.

Roses remain the jewel in the summer garden; different varieties are laden with colourful blooms. The perfumed ones have spicy, fruity and subtle scents. Dryer weather suits roses providing they are watered well, deadhead regularly to ensure continued flowering and treat any greenfly infestations quickly. Feed through the summer months; this will enable plants to be more resistant to disease attack.

Amazing antics in Aladdin

WHILST MANY of you will have been spending your evening wishing England could turn a performance into a result, wishing Rooney was twenty again and wishing the ref only played one minute of injury time, my evening focused on wishes of a (slightly) more fanciful kind: The Disney classic Aladdin has come to the West End in grand style, writes Matt Baker...

The popular Arabian Nights tale about a boy, a girl and a magic genie has been a mainstay in theatres for years as a traditional pantomime, but this incarnation owes more to the children's favourite Disney film.

I suppose the first thing to say is that The Prince Edward Theatre has put on a show that looks sumptuous.

In line with other Disney stage productions like 'The Lion King' the staging is stunning, the sets are really something to behold and rival anything I've seen in the West End with barnstorming ensemble numbers and frenetic action the audience was absorbed from the off.

Dean John-Wilson is a great Aladdin and Jade Evans a stunning Princess Jasmine, but the show was stolen by Trevor Dion Nicolas as the Genie. A personality that barely fits

A king of his time history

Southwark’s first black mayor and co-founder of the world famous Notting Hill carnival Sam King passed away aged 90 on June 18. Here’s what Mr King told the News back in February 2010 when was awarded a Blue Plaque for his impressive life achievements: FOR A man who has spent his life fighting the established way of thinking Sam King seems in danger of becoming something of an institution, writes Alex Steger…

His MBE in 1998 was followed by the unveiling of a Blue Plaque at the Herne Hill house Sam and his family have lived at for many years.

While both honours are usually the preserve of figures from the establishment, Sam King could never be described as such.

First coming to these shores in 1944 aged just eighteen to join the RAF in the Second World War, he was deported after victory.

Come 1948, he braved the Atlantic once more aboard the infamous Empire Windrush and seemed to live his life breaking boundaries from the moment he stepped off the boat.

On his arrival for a second time, Sam started working at a post office in Camberwell, where he stayed for much of his life and eventually becoming a manager.

Before becoming Southwark's first black mayor in 1983, he would also set up a programme to help fellow migrants buy homes, work for the first paper for West Indians, and help organise the first Notting Hill Carnival.

So why, having fought for Britain in the Second World War with the RAF, did he respond to her second cry for help in 1948, when Britain desperately needed labour?

He told the News: "I'm from Jamaica. I wanted my grandchildren to have an education and I thought I had to get back to England and in the end it worked out. My daughter went to Alexandria University in Egypt."

However in 1950s Britain, finding a way to get a roof over his head was Sam's most pressing concern.

Despite migrant workers coming to Britain's aid not everyone was welcoming to those from overseas.

Sam explained: "In 1950 in Stockwell I went with a man to see a house and there was a sign which said 'No Irish, no Blacks, no Dogs.'"

However, Sam did not see this as an

obstacle rather another challenge to overcome.

Through a system which already existed in Jamaica he and others found a way to own property.

"We saved the money and collected it, but then one person gets that money.

Then at the end of about three years we have enough money for a deposit on a property."

Sam and his family were amongst the first black families to own a house in Britain, settling in Camberwell.

Being first seems to be a trend in Sam's life. While working as a postman he delivered a good deal more than letters for the black community.

He was involved in organising the first Notting Hill Carnival and setting up the first paper dedicated to West Indians, 'The West Indian Gazette,' both of these involved the seasoned civil rights campaigner Claudia Jones.

However it was in becoming Mayor of Southwark that Sam King cemented his position as a pillar of the community in Southwark. Although typically for a man whose autobiography is entitled 'Climbing up the Rough Side of The Mountain' this was not all plain sailing: "The year after I became a councillor The National Front said if I became the mayor they would burn down my house and slit my throat. I said I'm not against the slitting of my throat because I'm a Christian, and believe we all have to go sometime and that I'd go to a nice place.

But I said they shouldn't burn down the house.

"For about three months when I became mayor when I went out there was a policeman with me. But God is good because lots of people heard Sam King had become Mayor of Southwark."

The Blue Plaque unveiled means for years to come many more people will know what Sam King achieved.

The Blue Plaque scheme was set up by the News and Southwark Heritage Association in partnership with Southwark Council to recognise through votes from local people the borough rich past.

Tributes to the late Sam King

THE FORMER mayor of Southwark, councillor Dora Dixon Fyle, said she felt “immensely proud” to present Mr King with his Freedom of the Borough award on May 14 at Southwark Cathedral, writes Owen Sheppard...

Dora told the News: “[his death] was sad I broke down in tears at the thought of it. He wasn’t a relation to me, but he has always been there. He was a legend.

“A lot of us politicians, especially those with BME backgrounds, really looked up to him, but he inspired everyone, he crossed boundaries.

“The first time I met him was in 1998 when he released his book, ‘Climbing Up the Rough Side of The Mountain’. I remember the way he spoke, he had such a booming, powerful voice.

“Even last month at the civic awards, I had to help hold him up with his granddaughter because he was so frail. But his voice was so strong and compelling, he filled a room and he was so concise with his words and had everyone captivated.”

Black-heritage author Stephen Bourne wrote about Mr King’s life in two of his books: ‘Speak of Me as I Am’ and ‘The Motherland Calls’.

Stephen told the News: “I shared a platform with Sam during Black History Month in 1998 when we both launched our books, and we have bumped into each other many times.

“Something very important that Sam gets overlooked for was his help in ending the Brixton and Peckham uprising. He was one of the first black community leaders to consult with the police about how to end the violence.

“I have always described him as a true gentleman. He would always give you the time of day and he always spoke with such humility and a personal touch.”

Mr King spent his later years living in Warmington Road in Herne Hill, where his Blue Plaque was unveiled in January 2009.

Tributes were also paid on Twitter by leading and local figures from the Labour Party.

Harriet Harman, Labour MP for Camberwell and Peckham, tweeted: “RIP Sam King MBE. Wonderful man. Today Southwark mourns but Southwark is proud.”

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote: “changed the face of London for the better”.

Livesey ward councillor, Michael Situ, tweeted saying Mr King was “principled, inspiring and always willing to serve”.

WITH SUMMER upon us and rumours of heatwaves heading our way, thoughts turn to rooftop and alfresco dining, writes Michael Holland...

There are some fantastic views along the Thames but surely the best ones are from the over side looking back at the Southwark and Lambeth riverbanks. And so it was for that reason that Nina the Excommunicated Ballerina (she gave up her dance lessons) and I found ourselves enjoying alfresco canapés and champagne in The Terrace of The Royal Horseguards Hotel watching The London Eye meander around on its axle, looking at people sitting in Victoria Gardens and feeling better situated than the commuters in their cars in Victoria Embankment traffic. The Royal Horseguards Hotel might feel familiar; it’s been featured in a number of films including Bond movies Skyfall and Octopussy, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and TV shows Mr Selfridge, Downton Abbey, and Spooks.

We were there for the launch of the brand new Terrace menu, which began very promisingly with a selection of table nibbles that included Marinated Artichoke and Sun-dried tomatoes, Spicy Hummus and Pitta Bread and roasted nuts in what tasted like sweet salt. Delicious!

As the gathering of press became settled the serving staff, a very professional bunch, made their way among us bearing trays of delicacies. First out was a Grangemoor Beef Burger with crispy bacon and Fourme d’Ambert, one of France's oldest cheeses, dating to Roman times, made from raw cow's milk; so a combination of carefully chosen products that worked a treat. The meat was actually light as well as tender and the whole concoction came together quite beautifully. I felt my non-meat-eating companion’s eyes burning into me, but I did not let them detract from my enjoyment.

As I dabbed brioche crumbs from my mouth another tray appeared holding rather posh hotdogs.

These, though, were constructed from Lincolnshire Pork Sausage with Savora Mustard and Onion Jam and really made me go

‘Hmmmmm’! I love a good sausage but sometimes the skin puts up a fight. This Lincolnshire lovely, however, yielded immediately to the bite.

By now the Ballerina was scanning the terrace for someone with any sort of fish or vegetable dish as she ‘harrumphed’ her way through yet another piece of artichoke. I had another sip of the splendid Taittinger and decided life was good right now.

Another burger tray arrived, this time delivering New Season Lamb with Moroccan Spices and Goats Cheese. This was another superb piece of work by the kitchen, although not quite as good as the earlier beef.

“Do you have anything that doesn’t include meat?” asked Nina

of the waitress whose sleeve she had a firm grip of.

“I’ll see if there are any chips, Madam,” she replied while yanking herself away from danger.

Big Ben, just next door, struck the hour of seven, the champagne flowed, and another round of burgers and hotdogs came and went, and then skewers of Corn Fed Chicken Satay lit up my taste buds, and then Teriyaki Beef Fillet made a few appearances, both cooked just right with scrumptious sauces accompanying them. And then, lo and behold, a tray of Grilled Tiger Prawns came our way. “Quick, Nina!” I exclaimed.

Alas, the poor girl had overdone the hummus and artichoke and declared she was quite full, so took only the one. Having a much

stronger constitution for this kind of work I grabbed four and found them to be perfectly cooked.

Unfortunately the prawns never made a return journey to our spot in the evening sun.

As the mighty bell along the way reminded us it was eight o’clock The Ballerina was ranting about the distinct lack of seafood and vegetable options, the Spicy Hummus not being spicy enough and some other stuff that I filtered out while I enjoyed life.

The Terrace is the ideal place to go for afternoon snacks, pretheatre or pre-night out food - with several seafood and vegetable offerings - with a good selection of platters and light salads; a small but very good wine list, craft beers and Jugs of Pimm’s.

The Terrace is available for private hire with a minimum spend of £1500 on food and drink.

You can reserve an area of the Terrace for a minimum spend of £20 per person. It’s open daily from noon – 9pm

LOCALLY, COLLEGES and other institutions will be offering taster days and sessions to show the wealth of learning opportunities available to people wanting to learn anything from flower arranging to languages and photography.

Morley College, located in Westminster Bridge Road near Waterloo, offers over 2,500 courses covering a broad range of interests, from art & design, fashion, dance, drama, music and humanities to languages, health, English & maths, business & enterprise and access to higher education. It offers courses at a range of levels from beginner to advanced, which are taught part-time during the day, evening and weekend to provide stimulating, flexible learning experiences for all.

The courses are extremely affordable, with some coming in at just £10. All the sessions are designed for absolute beginners and include memoir writing, electronic music producing, beading jewellery, Flamenco dancing, a hypnotherapy workshop and even an acting workshop called ‘Act Your Sox Off’.

The College has a series of events planned to show adults what new qualifications or skills they could learn, but it is just as important to explain how they can pay for them.

As Adult Learning Week starts, advisors at Lambeth College are getting ready to show students how their 24+ Advanced Learning loan scheme works.

It is approved by the Student Loans Company and is offered under specific criteria to support adults, so they’re not prevented from participating fully in learning.

Principal Mark Silverman told the Weekender: “We understand what a leap of faith many adults are taking when they decide they want to re-train when they’re a bit older, so we have experts who can give them advice and guidance about what level they should start at. It’s all about getting confidence. We are the Careers College though, so this really is the place to come to find out more. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about this to just come in to see us, and take it from there. It really is a chance to change your life.

“During adult learning week is a good time too, because others will be

thinking about making changes too, so people find they’re not the only ones starting again, and that is a huge support.”

All over the Lambeth College sites in Clapham, Brixton and Vauxhall, learners of all ages are either gaining new skills or upgrading those they already have, so the environment often

You will need to demonstrate the ability to support existing Tenants and Resident Association (T&RA) in achieving their aims by providing practical resources and advice. The post holder will be responsible for supporting Tenants and Residents in setting up new groups and associations.

You will have to demonstrate skills of Community Engagement and Capacity Building.

The post also includes working with Tenants & Resident’s Associations to increase the involvement of all their members by producing their own information leaflets and newsletters through training and community development support. You will attend late night and weekend meetings on a regular basis and ensure that groups adhere to the recognition criteria and follow good practice, and be aware of information and resources available to them in order to achieve their aims.

The SGTO is a voluntary group funded through the Tenants and Residents Movement via the local authority.

NOTIFICATION OF PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON CHANGES TO SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S “REGULATION 123 LIST”

Southwark Council is preparing a new plan for the Old Kent Road and surrounding area. The plan will guide and manage new development and growth in the area over the next 20 years. The plan aims to create a new high street environment for the Old Kent Road, with significant public transport improvements supported by mixed use development behind the road. This will incorporate around 20,000 new homes, including affordable homes, new jobs, community facilities and green spaces. The plan includes the potential for extending the Bakerloo Line from Elephant and Castle towards Lewisham with two new stations along the Old Kent Road. The plan will be used to make planning decisions in the area and to coordinate and deliver the regeneration strategy.

Alongside the draft Old Kent Road plan we are consulting on a revised Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) preliminary draft charging schedule and a draft addendum to the adopted Section 106 Planning Obligations and CIL supplementary planning document (SPD). Both of these documents relate to securing funding for the transport infrastructure (including the Bakerloo Line extension) that is needed in the Old Kent Road area to support the planned growth. We are also proposing to amend the “Regulation 123 List” which sets out what infrastructure will not be funded through section 106 planning obligations. TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice to carry out Highway works intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Spurgeon Street between Great Dover Street and Deverell Street.

The alternative route would be via: Spurgeon Street, Great Dover Street, Bartholomew Street, Deverell Street.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The works will be in place on the 27th July 2016.

1. The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to facilitate, The Summer Fair, as indicated in the schedule to this notice.

3. The effect of the Order is to prohibit any vehicle from:-

(a) entering or proceeding in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice on the date and between the hours specified in that schedule; (b) waiting (including waiting for the purpose of delivering or collecting goods or loading or unloading a vehicle) in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

ZAFAR ANSARI starred with bat and ball as Surrey earned the bragging rights in their T20 London derby contest against Middlesex last Friday.

The all rounder, along with bowler Tom Curran, gave the Kennington sides batting effort much needed impetuous, just as Surrey appeared to be flagging.

Opener Jason Roy spanked 35 off nineteen balls but Surrey fell away to 127/7 before Ansari and Curran took charge of things.

Curran hit 22 off ten balls, including a six, whilst Ansari notched up 34 off 25 balls to ensure Surrey set a decent score of 173/8 off 20 overs.

Ravi Rampaul took the key wicket of Brendan McCullum when Middlesex responded to that total, eventually ending with a return of three for 21 as the home attack stifled their London rivals.

Ansari was also key in this collective

effort as he picked up two Middlesex wickets for the cost of just sixteen runs as Surrey eventually bowled out their opponents for just 143, therefore securing a 29 run victory.

Results were mixed for the Kia Oval side in the Royal London One Day cup in recent days as they picked up a win and a defeat in the 50 over competition.

Surrey did overcome Sussex at Guildford helped again by the efforts of Rampaul who picked up four wickets in the visitors total of 239.

There did not appear to be enough runs on the board to defend but the home side were wobbling a touch when their fourth wicket fell with just 99 runs to their name.

But Rory Burns, 70 not out, and Ben Foakes, 61 not out, ensured there were no more scares as the duo passed a revised target of 235 with almost ten overs to spare.

However Surrey faired less well a day later when they took on Hampshire at the Rose Bowl, falling to a six run defeat.

FISHER ABC boxer Dominic Joyce picked up a gold medal at the Haringey Box Cup over the weekend.

The sixteen-year-old fought twice in two days to win the u56kg youth crown at the boxing tournament staged at Alexandra Palace.

On Saturday Joyce took on Callum Smith from Trowbridge Boxing Club and he came through that fight on a split decision.

The next day the teenager faced Irish boxer Martin Sammon, from the Olympic Galway club, and once again he just got the nod on the scorecards, although Joyce did give his opponent a standing count in the contest.

Surrey charity match

THE KIA Oval will host a high profile end of season charity match when a Surrey All-Stars side take on a Cricket United XI on September 22.

Players are still to be confirmed but Surrey and England star Jason Roy has already signed up to be a part of the Surrey All Stars, who will be managed by Surrey and England legend Mark Butcher.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan, who memorably lifted the Ashes at The Oval in 2005, will manage the Cricket United XI. Last year’s event raised over £300,000 for Help for Heroes and this year’s game is set to the benefit a number of cricketing charities including Chance to Shine, the PCA Benevolent Fund and the Lord’s Taverners.

Hickey new Hamlet chairman

Whilst Payne has now taken up the position of club President his old post will be taken up by Hickey who is a familiar face on the terraces at Champion Hill.

As well as supporting the club Hickey has taken on roles including match day announcer and commercial manager and will now step up, following a vote, to the position of Chairman.

The club have also announced that another fine servant of the club, John ‘Primo’ Leahy, has been voted as the new vice-chairman of Hamlet.

After heavy overnight rain and a delayed start, Chessington won the toss and elected to field. Ed Stolle and Tom Savill set off at a good pace which gave no hint of the drama to come, putting on 51 for the first wicket for Dulwich.

Both went to change bowler Prince Singh in successive overs, with Savill making a belligerent 29 off 37 balls, including sixteen off one over, and Stolle following for 20 off 36.

Ed Towner and Will Bancroft then carried on their good work of the previous week, taking the score to 75 after eighteen overs.

At this point spin was introduced, and the game changed abruptly as the bowlers extracted prodigious turn.

Both batsmen played on, Towner for thirteen and Bancroft for 26, and Ed Hopkins was clean bowled for three.

Dulwich had gone from 88/2 to 96/5. Runs now dried up completely as the lower order opted for defence, with Naeem Iqbal and Jon Lodwick both taking 36 balls for uncharacteristic innings of seven and four respectively.

Dulwich were dismissed for 116, having lost their last eight wickets for 28 runs in 21 overs.

The Chessington innings started in similar fashion as Karl Thorns went for his shots against the quicker bowlers, making 34 off 36 balls out of an opening stand of 41, before giving Lodwick a well-deserved wicket in the twelfth over.

By now Levi Olver had entered the attack with his left arm spin.

He was soon joined by off spinner Salaar Waqar who took the second wicket, removing obdurate opener Singh.

Olver took the next four wickets in fifteen balls without conceding a run as he reduced the visitors to 55/6.

Yarnley was joined by Paul Willis, and they changed the pattern of the match with an assault on Olver that saw him taken out of the attack.

The pair had added 39 runs in 7.4 overs when Waqar removed Willis and Singleton in successive balls to make it 94-8 after 32 overs, still 23 runs short of victory.

Luke Barnard helped his captain lift the score to 107 before Alex Gledhill had him caught by Savill at gully.

This brought in last man Jack Strange, who managed to hold up an end, who scored only two runs allowing Yarnley to take his side over the winning line.

AMBLER BACKS EFL TROPHY RESTRUCTURE

Lions Chief Exec believes there is more money to be made in revamp

MILLWALL CHIEF Executive Andy Ambler has underlined the club’s stance on the new structure of the EFL Trophy next season.

Lions boss Neil Harris approved the decision to overhaul the competition as he feels there is more money to be made in the proposed revamp, a sentiment Ambler echoes.

The EFL had proposals to reinvigorate the tournament for League One and League Two teams at this year’s Football League summer conference in Portugal two

weeks ago.

The proposal - which has been given backing for a one-year trial during the 2016-17 campaign - will see 64 teams compete in sixteen regionalised groups of four.

All 48 teams from League One and League Two will compete in the competition, alongside 16 Premier League U21 sides, or category one academies.

“As a team we got to the semi-final last year and didn’t make any money,” Ambler told the News.

“The fact is there is no sponsor next year and Sky only showed three out of six games they could have shown.

“It’s clear for the majority of clubs that the competition was dying.

“How can you have a competition where 48 teams enter and only two teams make money out of it? It basically needed a revamp.

“The idea is that if we allow U21 teams, the Premier League put money into a prize fund. I still think we will be too strong for these teams anyway.

“You are guaranteed three games, there’s prize money on the table in the proposed format. It isn't finalised yet - that is still to be decided.”

Ambler added: “It means we can put a bit more energy back into the competition, making it slightly different, it’s only a one year trial - so what have we got to lose?

“It isn't just Premier League teams, it is 16 category one academies, there

are some category one teams in the Championship, however.

“It will probably end up being 16 Premier League teams, my view is why not in this competition?

“I'm hoping that two league teams get to the final rather than the other way round but, that’s why it’s a one year trial to see if it works for all of us.

“Ultimately it is a case of we played two games in the early rounds last year against Peterborough and then Northampton. Attendances were low - we are holding games at The Den where we make no money, how can that make any sense?”

There has been some worry that introducing Premier League U21

sides into an EFL competition could be the start of integrating ‘B teams’ from the top division into the Football League.

But Ambler was quick to reassure fans this wasn't the case, and it is a motion the club are staunchly against.

The Lions CEO explained: “I don't think it’s the thin end of the wedge with respect to B teams being in the league - that is something we would not support - and it isn't even on the agenda.

“If people are worried that'll be the case, I don't think it will be.

“If you want to change the format of our leagues, it takes 90 per cent of clubs to be in favour, fans needn't worry about that.”

Ambler and Harris pleased with response to new kit marking 50th anniversary

MILLWALL HAVE received a positive reaction to the unveiling their new home kit for the 2016-17 season.

The Lions are to wear a striped kit for the first time in 50 years, to mark the anniversary of 59 games unbeaten at The Den, a feat achieved in December 1966 - a record that still stands today.

Millwall collaborated with new kit manufacturers Errea to produce a kit that would suitably honour the team that accomplished the historic home run.

The kit manufacturer took over from fellow Italians Macron in supplying Millwall’s kits for next season.

And the Lions Chief Executive Andy Ambler was pleased the kit was met with such acclaim by fans on forums and social media alike.

“I’m pleased it has been received well,” Ambler said. “We needed to do something different with Errea.

“When you have a new manufacturer

it’s good to do something different.

“It’s going to be the 50th anniversary during the season of that 59 game home unbeaten run.

“We played in stripes in that era and we thought it would be fitting to go into the season on that basis.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to get a change every so often, the club has played in stripes.

“If you look at the history, we’ve played in white as a home kit, and blue as a home kit. Errea have been super to work with, it’s nice to honour that team 50 years ago with this kit and let’s hope we are as successful as they were.”

Prior to the launch of the home kit, Errea organised a competition for fans to design the Lions’ new away strip for the 2016-17 campaign, with a two-tone yellow designed by Kathryn Gale chosen as the club’s away colours next season.

And Ambler said the designs had given them food for thought in regards to future changed kits thanks to all the entries to the competition.

“The away kit won’t be properly launched until some time in July.”

Ambler explained. “It was nice to go to the fans and see what they wanted as the away kit - we had some really good ideas, some of which you can look at and think that’s a good idea for next season or the season after.

“Knowing what the home kit was like there were some we couldn't do as it wasn't a big enough change. It was difficult to choose a winner but it was really good that we could have a look at some of the designs, so that process was really helpful.”

Millwall manager Neil Harris also had his say on the new home kit for the Lions: “It is a fantastic gesture by the club. A football club like ours likes to remember success in the past, as a team and individually.

“We do Dockers’ Day and the Jimmy Mizen day, and we bring back the old players, which is fantastic.

“If you go back and go down memory lane it was a successful period the club had, I’m fully supportive of it.”

SHAUN HUTCHINSON is coming to Millwall with a point to prove, after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal from July 1 with the defender’s contract with former club Fulham expiring at the end of the month.

The 25-year old has an option of a further year should the club wish to activate that clause.

And Hutchinson has made it abundantly clear what his aims are for his first season at what he calls a “pretty big club.”

MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris has revealed he is pleased the fixtures have fallen kindly for his side this season.

The new set of fixtures were released yesterday with the Lions starting at home to Oldham, a game Harris can now start planning for.

And Harris is delighted to start off at home after last season’s opening day trip to Shrewsbury.

“We immediately start planning for Oldham,” Harris said. “We will look at their pre-season fixtures, when and where they are playing, and I will be watching them over the course of preseason. Now we can plan for each fixture, it's an opportunity for us to

“It was a frustrating season for me last year - I’m coming to Millwall with a point to prove,” the defender said.

“Millwall got to the play-offs last season and they know what it takes to be up there.

“If I didn't believe they had a chance of doing it, I probably wouldn't have joined - that was a big plus in signing for Millwall.”

Lions boss Harris has said Hutchinson is an ‘aggressive’ centrehalf and the Newcastle born defender

has told Millwall fans what they can expect from him.

“The fans appreciate hard work and 100 per cent every game,” Hutchinson explained. “That’s what I can promise.

“No matter what I shall be giving my all and working hard and doing by best for the club.

“If something doesn't go our way I'm not going to shy away.

“I'm going to continue to do what I think is best and give 100 per cent.

“Hopefully, come the end of the season, the fans are satisfied and happy with the signing Neil has made.

“I look forward to putting on the shirt.”

“After looking at the start you quickly scroll down to when you have Charlton, they will be two cracking fixtures for both sets of fans and we look forward to playing those games.”

Last year, Millwall faced lengthy northern trips to Blackpool, Fleetwood and Wigan on Tuesday nights.

And Harris revealed he is happy with the spread of mid-week away fixtures, as well as the opportunity to have backto-back home games over the Christmas period.

Harris told the News: “I’m certainly pleased with our fanbase that Christmas has been kind to us, playing back to back fixtures at home over that

period - then we go away to Wimbledon.

“This season, travelling-wise, on a Tuesday have been a lot kinder to us that’s a slight element of luck.

“We showed last year that my players will just play the games and take one game at a time.

“We will focus diligently on each opposition. We don't care if it’s Monday night, Tuesday night, Saturday morning - we just play. We play to win every game.

“It does help if the games fall kindly for the fans, the more you get to away games, the better the atmosphere for my players to play in.”

“We play against sides with real credentials to be at the top of the division in MK Dons, Peterborough and Sheffield United.

“So right away it brings an exciting challenge in the opening month of the season.

The new measures, discussed at the English Football League’s summer conference, which will take immediate effect, include the introduction of mandatory new recruitment practices for coaching positions in academy football and a Voluntary Recruitment Code in first team football, which will be piloted by ten clubs during 2016-17.

The proposals are aimed at tackling the under-representation of coaches and managers from the BAME community.

Millwall are one of four League One clubs to pilot the scheme, along with Chesterfield, Coventry and Peterborough.

Championship sides Birmingham, Huddersfield, Fulham and Wolves have also offered to initiate the new procedure, whilst Accrington Stanley and Carlisle are representing League Two on the new proposals.

Ambler told the News: “I think that it is a step forward; it's a radical step for the EFL to take a lead on.

“It's best practised anyway. It's something we've been doing in our academy for a while.

“The percentage of coaches that we have in our academy from the BAME community is quite high anyway, so it doesn't affect us too much, but for the league to take that step to put it in as a regulation is forward thinking.”

In addition, the emergency loan window was up for discussion – FIFA have given their consent for the withdrawal of the window, but the EFL have introduced a number of measures to ease the transitional period.

These include: a player registered on a standard loan may continue to play nonfirst team football for his parent club during the term of his loan period, plus, a law that clubs will be permitted to sign a goalkeeper on a seven day ‘emergency loan’ basis if they do not have a senior goalkeeper that has made 5 starting appearances in first team football.
