A DISABLED Bermondsey mum fears she will not be able to take her young children to school after the government takes away funding for her car next

week, under new benefits rules.

Jessica Lucas, 35, has been suffering from severe health problems for ten years, using the car for the last three years to take her two children aged five and nine to school.

Pumphouse’s future could be saved if everyone is involved

T

HE INITIAL proposal to build a multi-million pound theatre in the historic Lavender Pumphouse in Rotherhithe is really exciting, as local people have battled to keep the now vacant building free from vandals and developers.

West-End theatre producer Daniel Sparrow’s proposal would keep it safe.

Since last July when the 1920s Pumphouse was ransacked by vandals and squatters, a dedicated band of local residents formed a ‘Save The Lavender Pumphouse’ group hoping to get the building listed.

This is one of the last remnants of the area’s proud docking heritage. It originally housed equipment for levelling the water in the docks and was a museum until most of the equipment moved to the nearby Brunel Museum. The building was also home to the Peek Frean Museum for some time before the council cut it’s funding, forcing it to close down completely. It was then that the building was occupied by squatters and hit by vandals, destroying among other things a replica of the Queen’s 1947 wedding cake made by Peek Frean.

Local volunteers were quick to help reconstruct this slice of local history and with the help of the British Sugarcraft Guild, they hope to have it ready in time for Royals’ 70th wedding anniversary next November.

It is an awful shame that, until the building was plundered, it was not listed to protect it from joining the long list of the area’s heritage that has been replaced by luxury apartments. The campaign to get the building recognised by English Heritage continues and we would urge readers to join it www.savethepumphouse.wordpress.com On the face of it - and without seeing more detailed proposals - the plans by Olivier Award-winning Daniel Sparrow would be an ideal option. It would bring a £4 million cultural hub to the peninsula, with an estimated £60,000 per year going to the adjoining nature park. Of course the main concerns for anything like this being created in any part of Rotherhithe is traffic. People here suffer from perhaps one of London’s worst road and transport infrastructures. If a 300 to 400 seater theatre is to be housed here, for the commercial viability of the venture, and more importantly the impact on the roads, parking must be considered and routes thought through to protect local people from further traffic nightmares.

It is surprising, therefore, that when the initial plans by Mr Sparrow were introduced at the Canada water Consultative Forum on Monday, it is understood that not one of the area’s councillors attended. This has all the potential to be a brilliant asset to the area but could be marred by genuine objections to the impact it will have on local people, most if not all of whom want to see the future of this historic building secured.

Martial Arts mega star pops into Walworth pub to play darts EXCLUSIVE

KUNG FU king Jackie Chan put down his nunchucks and last week tried his hand at darts in a Walworth pub.

The martial arts mega star popped into The Good Intent in East Street as he was filming near the pub.

Vince McDonald, the pub landlady’s husband, was shocked when the martial arts film star walked into the pub and waved him over for a match.

Vince was impressed with the globally known film star’s throwing arm, but was convinced he would have beaten him in a competitive match.

He said: “He could throw a treble twenty, I’ll put it that way, but I think I could have beaten him.

“I just didn’t want him to chop me, so I went a little bit easy on him.”

The 45-year-old gave the globally known film star his personal Tottenham Hotspur set of darts, along with an orange juice, before he was called over for a round in The Good Intent.

Chan reportedly said he would love to come back, and complemented the owner on the pub.

Nobody seemed star-struck and it felt like business as usual, according to pub landlady, Wendy McDonald, 42, when the martial arts mega star arrived about 10:30am last Thursday.

“No one caused a fuss, which is one reason why he probably felt so comfortable being in here,” she said.

“It was a huge shock though, of course, and everyone hasn’t stopped talking about it since.”

Filming for The Foreigner, which stars Chan and Pierce Brosnan, was taking place in East Street, near the pub – where the Hong Kong actor and stuntman was spotted in an imported telephone box.

Two escape blaze in flat

CAMBERWELL: Two men escaped a flat fire in Camberwell last week.

Firefighters rescued one man from the Camberwell Church Street blaze during the evening of January 12, while another managed to escape without assistance.

Both men were treated for smoke inhalation, while a small part of the second floor flat was damaged by the fire.

The fire brigade were called at just before 6pm.

Crews from Peckham and Brixton fire stations attended the scene and got the fire under control within 45 minutes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Pensioner dies after bike collision

WALWORTH: A pensioner has died after a collision with a motorcycle in the Old Kent Road on January 8.

The 72-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition after the accident.

She died from her injuries on January 12.

The male driver of the motorcycle stopped at the scene and suffered from minor injuries. He was not arrested following the collision.

Next of kin has been informed and an inquest will be carried out by Southwark Coroner’s Court.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Anyone who witnessed the collision should call officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574.

Missing man found ‘safe and well’

PECKHAM: A diabetic Peckham man who was feared missing without his essential medication has been found “safe and well” by police.

On January 7, officers appealed for help from the public in locating Mohammed Golpaykar-Rad, who was last seen in Denmark Hill on Christmas Eve. The 59-year-old is a diabetic and police were worried for his wellbeing.

However, officers announced on January 14 that Golpaykar-Rad had been found “safe and well.”

A DISABLED Bermondsey mum fears she will not be able to take her young children to school after the government takes away funding for her car next week, under new benefits rules.

Jessica Lucas, 35, of Buttermere Close, has been suffering from severe health problems for ten years, using the car for the last three years to take her two children aged five and nine to school.

The government’s new scheme meant that Jessica had to prove she was unable to walk further than 20 metres to ensure her eligibility for the vehicle.

She managed the distance but the journey to school is more than a mile away.

Her only form of transport is the car funded by the working-age Disability Living Allowance (DLA) which was replaced by Personal Independence Payments (PIP) in 2013. In March last year, figures confirmed that PIP would see as many as 180,000 DLA claimants lose their cars after reassessment.

“Why am I being punished for

having a disability? It’s disgusting,” said Jessica. “I’m in constant pain every day of my life. The only dignity I have left as a 35-year-old woman is my car.”

“If this woman now has to claim new costs from the council because this person or others can’t attend medical appointments because they haven’t got transport, it’s going to cost the NHS. “It’s very short term thinking and

A Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson said: “Decisions for PIP are made following a face-to-face assessment with medical professionals and consideration of all the evidence provided by the claimant, including the claimant’s GP. “We are working closely with Motability who are providing support to people leaving the scheme following reassessment.

The majority of people will be eligible for a one-off payment of £2000, which will help ensure their mobility needs continue to be met.”

Police hunt man after ‘disgusting actions’ on train HERNE HILL

POLICE ARE hunting for a man after “disgusting actions” were performed in front of a woman on a train bound for Herne Hill.

According to the British Transport Police, a man indecently exposed himself before performing an indecent act in front of a woman sitting on the train, which was travelling from Sutton to St Albans.

He boarded the train at Sutton and disembarked at Herne Hill station.

The incident is believed to have occurred at around 2.40pm on December 17.

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

PC Mark Luker said: “This was a revolting act that left the victim feeling extremely intimidated and upset. Nobody travelling on the railway should have to put up with these disgusting actions and we’re determined to find the man responsible.”

Charity to take over nursery

A COUNCIL-RUN nursery in Bermondsey is set to be taken over by a charity, leaving current staff members facing redundancy or transfers to other nurseries.

From April, the South Bermondsey Children and Parents centre nursery in Tendra Road, which currently caters to around 60 children, will be under the control of the London Early Years Foundation (LEYF). The rest of the centre will remain in council hands.

Staff have been told to accept an “enhanced voluntary severance package” or transfer to another nursey remaining under the council’s control.

As well as the Tendra Road nursery, which employs around 15 people, LEYF also runs the Bird in the Bush Nursery in the Old Kent Road and Burgess Park Community Nursery in Glengall Road.

The council has assured parents that

nursery fees will remain as they currently are, while eligible under-twos will receive free provision. A new baby room will be opened, while the number of places will be increased to reach the “full potential of the building”, increasing capacity by almost 50 children.

LEYF recently won UK Nursery Group of the Year for the second year running.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “We know how important quality and affordable childcare is to local families and the changes at South Bermondsey will give parents a much better offer, at the same price.

“We know any change brings some uncertainty, but we are meeting regularly with parents and staff to help ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements. LEYF are a fantastic charity, with a proven track record of running excellent nurseries.”

New CEO to embrace scientific advances THE NEW Chief Executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has vowed to embrace technological and scientific advances in her new role.

Amanda Pritchard, who has replaced Sir Ron Kerr, was officially approved by the board this week after working as Acting Chief Executive since October.

She said: “While Guy’s and St Thomas’ has a long and proud history, we must focus on the future. The challenges we face are significant, but so too are the opportunities, particularly if we embrace new technology and scientific advances.

“We need to deliver the best possible care to our patients right now, whilst also working hard to deliver the

transformation needed to sustain our services and to take full advantage of the opportunities that are on the horizon if we grasp them.”

POLICE ARE appealing for help in locating a vulnerable pensioner who was last spotted at Bermondsey Tube Station on Monday.

Ivan Bristol, 80, was seen on CCTV at the tube stop at around 5.40pm on January 18.

He was on his way home to Southampton after visiting family in Newham.

Officers are becoming “increasingly concerned” due to Mr Bristol’s health problems

Country music star gives free books to babies born this year

COUNTRY MUSIC legend Dolly Parton is urging the borough’s kids to pick up a book and read from nine ‘til five, as part of her Imagination Library project.

The scheme will see the Jolene singer give Southwark babies born this year a free book every month until their fifth birthday, helped by Southwark Council and DialAFlight, whose charity Make My Day Better is allocating £750,000 to the cause.

In a video available at our website, the 69-year-old songstress said: “Hello Southwark! This is Dolly and I just want to thank you for launching the Imagination Library.

“Thanks to the generosity of DialAFlight and their charity Make My Day Better, 5000 kids born in 2016 will start getting a new book every month. And I certainly don’t want to forget the council, because their staff

will make sure that every child is registered. This is a really big deal for you, and for me! Now let’s have some fun!”

Southwark Council Leader Peter John said: “With many families still feeling the pinch it has never been so important to ensure that children have access to books so they can learn and develop as much possible in their early years. Our libraries already run some wonderful sessions for the under five age group, with a huge range of books available for parents to read with their children, but it’s fantastic that this scheme will also allow children and families to start building up a library of their very own.”

All children born between December 1, 2015 and December 31, 2016 will be eligible. Parents must register their children by the end of the year. The kids will only be eligible to receive books while they live in Southwark.

DANIEL COULD BE BRITAIN’S TOP MODEL

A ROTHERHITHE student has reached the grand final of a nationwide professional modelling competition.

Daniel Adeyole, 20, was chosen to compete with a hundred models in Top Model UK. “I’m excited because it’s given me an opportunity not many people get,” Daniel, an Anglia Ruskin student, told the News.

He got into modelling in March last year through his friend Emmanuel Ajayi who founded modelling agency Ajayi 360.

could do modelling. I was just doing the normal thing, but the type of character I am, I can’t just sit in an office.”

“If you want to go into modelling just go for it. The skills and confidence you get are so worth the work.”

Top Model UK will take place at the Hilton London Metropole on April 1 and 2.

The competition also runs a charity public vote award which last year raised over £22,000 for charity. Each vote raises money towards Children with Cancer UK.

Court told how a woman downed a bottle of drain cleaner before throwing herself off a block of flats

AN ALGERIAN woman drank drain cleaner and handed her partner a suicide note before jumping to her death from a sixth floor balcony in Bermondsey, a coroner’s court heard.

Taous Adem, 37, locked herself out on her sixth floor balcony in Landman House on Galleywall Road on November 17 last year.

Her husband Zamir Zugin desperately tried to kick down the door as his wife climbed over the edge and plunged to her death.

Construction workers from a nearby building site heard screaming and shouting followed by a loud thud in the moments before Adem was discovered.

When Zugin managed to get out he found his wife still breathing on the pavement. Emergency services were unable to save her when they arrived soon after.

Attending paramedics reported the smell of bleach and a bottle of drain

cleaner was found on the balcony of the flat the couple shared. The drain cleaner had burned a hole in her stomach.

Police officers at the scene described having to restrain her distraught husband who repeatedly sobbed: “I just want her to live.”

Coroner Sarah Ormonde-Walsh said on January 6: “This is a difficult case and I do not always give a suicide conclusion because it carries with it a test that is high.

“She clearly has taken corrosive fluid shortly before her death and there was evidence of drain cleaner on the balcony but that is not what caused her death. What caused her death was her falling from the sixth floor, her injuries were unsustainable.

“She died by letting herself fall from the balcony and her death was very unexpected and possibly impulsive.

“If it helps the family at all she would not have suffered or been in any pain and would have died quickly.”

A suicide verdict was given.

Think tank claims that rail networks ‘not delivering’

TRANSPORT FOR London should take over all south London train services, a think said in a new report released last week.

The Centre for London think tank, in a report called Turn South London Orange, slammed south London rail networks for ‘not delivering’ and found what it called a ‘serious rail capacity gap’.

The plans, if implemented, could see the number of trains across the network increase to six per hour, a spokeswoman for the think tank said.

The report highlights transport issues in Southwark, and points towards particular concerns in Camberwell. It says that there have been nine separate Bakerloo line schemes since the 1920s, leaving some unfinished tunnels, and a tenth proposal is under consideration.

TfL is currently consulting on a proposed new extension to the line, which would go through the borough, but the preferred track would see a new station at Old Kent Road, not at Camberwell as local campaigners had hoped. “A local station catchment map shows that a combination of a Camberwell Thameslink station and at least one Old Kent Road Bakerloo extension station could put much of this part of inner South-East London ‘on the map’,” said the spokeswoman.

“This would be allied with higher density developments, for example at Old Kent Road. A further increase in service levels would benefit connectivity, with the possibility of direct services with Streatham/Sutton/Wimbledon and Peckham/Catford/Bromley.”

The report foresees that the viaduct space of the former Camberwell station, which lies intact just south of Camberwell New Road, could be reused with adaptation.

A spokesman for the Rail Delivery Group, which represents train operators and Network Rail, said: “Some of the best rail passenger satisfaction levels in London and the South East are being achieved on services commissioned by both Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT).

Private train companies already work effectively with TfL, whether by operating London Overground or ensuring that passengers can use their tickets to travel across both TfL and national rail.

“The railway is carrying record numbers of passengers, and substantial investment is delivering improvements for customers including major projects in London. The rail industry is ready to work with national and local government to deliver even better rail services that meet the needs of commuters living inside and outside the Greater London area.”

A HIDDEN entrance will disguise a Peaky Blinders inspired bar and restaurant when it opens near London Bridge this month.

The mystery location of The Tick Tack Club is only revealed to those who buy tickets, but the News can reveal that it promises a so called ‘illicit gambling den’, a restaurant, live jazz and a hidden club.

Props and costumes will help set the 1921 scene, inspired by London’s ‘seedy underbelly’ pictured in the BBC series Peaky Blinders, with a dressing-up box available to guests on entry.

Organisers, A Place In Time, aim to separate the aristocrats of Edwardian society from the riff-raff of the 20s by means of the venue’s two tiers.

“Downstairs is set to the backdrop of ale jugs clinking and singalongs on

the piano. You’ll get to experience the warm environment of the 1920s working classes,” a spokesperson said.

“Then you will be whisked away upstairs for an evening wildly different. An elegant four-course dinner served only to the upper echelons of society.”

The exclusive event is set to take place under an arch of London Bridge, but the exact location is kept under wraps to keep out the prying eyes of 1920s authorities.

WEST-END PRODUCER HOPES TO OPEN NEW THEATRE DOWNTOWN

AN OLIVIER Award-winning drama producer has revealed his plan to bring a 350-seat theatre to Rotherhithe by converting the derelict Pumphouse building in Lavender Road.

Daniel Sparrow, who has worked in the West End on smash hits Sweeney Todd, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys and Billy Elliot, has proposed a £4m “cultural hub” for the peninsula.

As well as the main theatre, his scheme would include a small 100-seat studio, dining facilities and a community education centre which would benefit the Lavender Pond Nature Park.

The current building was left devastated by squatters last summer, who daubed graffiti across the walls, ripped wiring from walls and trashed a replica of the Queen’s wedding cake, soon after Daniel moved to Rotherhithe.

He told the News: “I moved here eight months ago and just stumbled across the building while I was exploring the area on a Sunday. The plan grew from there.

“What London is missing is an offWest End theatre with 300 to 400 seats.

The project would create a theatre with amazing facilities.”

The building would need £1m worth of restoration and £3m worth of further investment – financial figures Daniel is very confident of obtaining.

He said: “Because the project would involve part-ownership of a London theatre, it is an incredibly romantic prospect. It’s an incredibly rare opportunity. Most theatres in London are owned by a handful of people. One investor immediately pledged a quartermillion.”

He acknowledged that there would be some objections from nearby residents but vowed to make the proposed theatre as attractive for local people as for theatre-lovers from across London.

He promised that a portion of the cost of each theatre ticket would go towards

the upkeep of the adjacent nature park – which he predicted could raise £60,000 per year - while ecology education classes would also be held on-site.

He said: “I want to get the community involved. It is really important – this would be a cultural hub but also a community hub.”

Southwark Council is currently

accepting proposals for the building, which was built in the 1920s to house pumping equipment used in the area’s then-thriving docks. A decision will be made sometime this spring.

A HERNE Hill toy shop of eleven-years faces closure after rent almost doubled due to a ‘change in market’.

Just Williams Toys is set to close on January 24 after landlords Dulwich Estate looked to secure an approximate annual rent of £42,000.

This is almost double the £22,500 the store is currently paying, and comes three years after the area was extensively damaged by floods.

“It’s just ridiculous,” said Director of Just Williams, Vicky Brown.

“They [Dulwich Estate] feel the market has changed, but I just can’t see how it has? Footfall has gone down, there are lots of shops that are still suffering [from the floods].

“How can these landlords ask for more rent when there aren’t any customers there?”

In July, Dulwich Estate asked for an increase in rent from £22,500 to £28,400, plus £1400 for the garage and £750 for parking space, Ms Brown told the News. However, Just Williams gave a counter offer of £27,200.

Ms Brown claims there was no response until September, to which Dulwich Estate rejected the offer and increased the rent price to £35,000.

Five months later, the rent has now increased to £42,000, she said.

“If they had said to me straight away within a couple of months, I would have paid the £28,400,” she said.

Just Williams Toys will have three branches left in East Dulwich, Beckenham, and Clapham South.

However, Ms Brown believes that the closure in Herne Hill could set a

damning precedent for other small businesses in the area.

“This is going to affect the community hugely,” she said.

“We could get empty shops, or big

chains could come to Herne Hill. But it’s such a small place, so I reckon it will become quite a desolate area.

“I am sure if such high rents continue to be demanded for the area

you will see several other shops disappear in the next few years.”

The News contacted Dulwich Estate for a comment, but did not receive a reply.

MORE STREETS at the re-built Aylesbury Estate will be named after well-known Southwark characters – and the hunt is on to find their surviving relatives to inform them of the honour.

The streets will make up Harvard Gardens, the second phase of the Aylesbury redevelopment which is due for completion this September, and will be named after an East Street racing tipster, a Peckham bus driver, a Walworth bobby and an anti-crime campaigner.

Prince Ras Monolulu is one of the more dramatic characters to have lived in the borough and will be honoured with a street located thousands of miles from the place of his birth. Born Peter Carl Mackay, the West Indies immigrant made his way to London in 1902. He quickly

became a reputed racing tipster, operating out of the East Street Market, where his exclamation of “I’ve gotta horse!” was well-known.

He was also described by Charlotte Benstead, Chief Executive of the Creation Trust, the street-naming project co-ordinators, as “the first black face on the BBC” after he was filmed at a number of high profile racing events in the early-twentieth century.

Another street will be named after Anthony Severin, a bus driver from Peckham. He was a well-known face in the area due to his many years driving the number 12 bus and was even honoured with a people’s choice MBE in 1994 (staying true to his trade and driving his bus to collect his medal at Buckingham Palace).

However, like Monolulu, Creation Trust have struggled to track down his relatives.

Harry Cole, a former Walworth policeman who served for over 30

years in the area, will also be honoured with a street name. The bobby was a common sight cycling through the neighbourhood before he died in 2008 and was honoured with a Southwark Blue Plaque at Charles Dickens School, which he attended as a child.

The final street will be named after Keib Thomas, who also died within the last decade. Headhunted by the police after years in the voluntary sector in 2000, he spent the rest of his life fighting to make Southwark a safer place. Working on gang violence and community integration, he had a huge influence across the borough.

Like Monolulu, Severin and Cole, the Creative Trust are desperate to get in touch with Thomas’ relatives to let them know of their tribute.

New homes to ‘keep the elderly in Bermondsey’ get go-ahead

PLANNING permission has been granted for new almshouses in Southwark Park Road, which would allow Bermondsey’s elderly people to “grow older and stay part of their community.”

The 57-flat scheme will be located at the junction with Reverdy Road and is being funded by £23.5m from developers Delancey, as part of a deal which will see them build luxury flats by the Tate Modern.

A further £6.5m will be paid towards the council’s affordable housing fund, while

the News reported in November that the developers would pay a ‘peppercorn’ rent for the almshouses’ leasehold.

The project in The Blue, devised by charity United St Saviour’s, would see the first almshouses built in the borough for decades. They will be built at 94-116 Southwark Park Road on the site of Welch House, a vacant, post-war nursing home.

A HOLOCAUST survivor will speak at the International War Museum (IWM) next Wednesday as part of the commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Jan Imich, from Krakow in Poland, was nine when he was arrested, separated from his family and imprisoned in a succession of concentration camps. He was reunited with his father in the UK after the war.

The Holocaust Memorial Day event, which has been organised by the IWM and Southwark Council, will take place on January 27. As well as the talk by Mr Imich, it will also involve a performance by poet and council employee Suley Muhidin, a harpist performance and a wreathlaying at the Soviet War Memorial and the Holocaust Memorial Tree.

Member of public helps in river rescue

LONDON BRIDGE: A man was saved from the Thames this week after members of the public and police worked together in a dramatic rescue operation.

The man, who had fallen from London Bridge on Tuesday morning, was pulled from the water and taken the hospital. He was taken for further treatment under the Mental Health Act. The man in his late-twenties was struggling in the water by the bridge until a “member of the public came to his assistance”, according to police.

Nunhead train chaos!

I SAW on twitter that you are looking at trains from Nunhead.

I thought I would send an email and let off some steam!

My regular train is the 08.39 from Nunhead to Kentish Town. I take it to St Pancras. The train has not been on time once since the turn of the year.

This morning the train arrived at Nunhead eight minutes late (no explanation given for delay). We were then stuck between Nunhead and Peckham Rye for ten minutes, again no explanation given. I arrived at St Pancras nearly 20 minutes late.

As well as the delays, part of the problem is that Nunhead is poorly served by trains compared to Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill. There are only two trains from Nunhead between 08.00 and 09.00 to Blackfriars and beyond.

They are timed to leave at 08.14 and 08.39. During the same period, Peckham Rye has three trains and Denmark Hill has seven trains.

Last week I had to take the 08.14 to get in to work for an early meeting. It was four carriages long rather than the usual eight carriages. Most people couldn’t board at Nunhead and had to wait for the 08.39 – while we waited several trains went through to Blackfriars with spare seats. The 08.39 arrived late, was rammed full and then was terminated at Blackfriars!

You would think there could be some flexibility when people have been left on the platform at Nunhead to allow trains to stop to pick people up when things are going wrong.

I have had the same commute for the last six years. The service has been generally poor but it has really deteriorated over the last two to three months. When you do manage to get on one the trains are also increasingly overcrowded.

This is great news for around 150,000 working families with disabled children who were likely to be affected by this and rely on tax credits to pay for basics like food and heating.

However, other cuts to the benefits that the government announced last summer will still go ahead and means many families with disabled children could still find themselves worse off in

Your front page story is not typical of bad Southwark Council housing policy

I AM writing regarding the story in this week’s Southwark News about the cockroach problem in the temporary accommodation let to Meyrem Walker, Corvel Thomas and their baby CJ.

This was an appalling situation for Ms Walker to face and I apologise on behalf of the council for this. I want to reassure your readers that the property had been carefully checked before the keys were handed over and there were no signs of cockroaches at the time that Ms Walker moved in – the cockroach problem only arose afterwards. We would never let a home to a family if there was any indication of pest infestation.

Since Ms Walker made the council aware of the problem on Monday 11 January, we have acted quickly. Pest treatment to get rid of the problem was carried out on Wednesday 13th and further work will be done to plug all the gaps that might let them in and to clean the carpets in the home. Our tenancy officer is supporting Ms Walker to make sure that all of this is done to her satisfaction.

I disagree, however, with your conclusion that this single case highlights a problem with our own housing policies. The problem lies not with our own policies but the impact that national housing policies are having on our residents. Demands on our limited temporary accommodation have increased significantly thanks to the current housing crisis and the impact of welfare reforms. The number of households in temporary accommodation to whom the council has a housing duty has gone up by 78% in the last three years. Southwark, like every other borough, is having to deal with the fallout of this and we are doing everything we can to prevent homelessness in our borough and are looking at more innovative ways to provide secure temporary accommodation for those who do find themselves losing their home. We are building new council homes and delivering affordable homes across the borough but we are only one council. This is a problem on a national level and it needs a national solution.

Hancock’s finest hour

O

n the day that winter finally arrived, so Sheila Hancock, a true veteran, shone like the summer sun in Grey Gardens, a musical play based on fact, writes Michael Holland...

But shone just briefly, because within minutes of her entrance as the destitute mother of a deranged daughter in a cat, flea and racoon infested house in 1973 she was gone and replaced by Jenna Russell as her younger self in 1941.

Act 1 sets the scene for how Edith and Edie Bouvier Beale ended up in such tragic circumstances while just a cousin away was the millions of Jackie Kennedy/Onassis, probably the most famous woman in the world at that time, who is seen here as a young girl frolicking around the house that became the cage that kept her near relatives in so much squalor the local council sent threatening letters.

From the outset we see that Edith is controlling and wants to outshine her daughter, and constantly drives away suitors. Her own husband lives a bachelor life elsewhere so she surround herself with song and dance in a big house on Long Island – Grey Gardens. Edith is said by her father to be ‘an actress without a stage’.

Act 1 ends with young Edie running away after losing another boyfriend through her mother’s overbearing actions.

At the interval I spoke to the director, the wonderful Thom Southerland who spoke of the ‘joy working with Jenna Russell and Sheila Hancock’, and reveals that he has waited for three years for them to both be free to be in this

And it is to our benefit that he did because the second half is a masterclass in acting and comic timing as Hancock and Russell return to 1973, trapped in their life of love-hate misery.

We catch up on the intervening 30 years while realising that young Edie lives in a past of ‘what ifs’ and a glory that never was. She performs for the local handy man that helps out with flea powder and odd jobs around the house, but we never get an answer to why, when they were once so connected to high society, they fell to such depths of depravity. At the end we leave them there, carrying on as usual, living together though in their own little worlds.

These multi-award winners both show brilliance at comedy, working the audience and soaking up the applause and laughter before moving on with a look or a gesture. There is a great moment when young Edie steps on the scales after Edith calls her ‘fat’, but has to look at the reading through binoculars. The comedy, though, emphasises and underlines the sad tragedy that is the reality of these Bouviers.

Two weeks in and I may have already seen the best work of 2016.

ASTHE panto season ended it was a respite from all the seasonal jollity to see Goodnight Mister Tom, a play by David Wood from Michelle Magorian’s novel about the horrors of war and the forced separation of families, writes Michael Holland...

Mister Tom is a grumpy recluse whose Dorset village gets inundated with kids evacuated from the Blitz, and he gets to care for William Beech, a nervous boy from a very broken home in Deptford, much to Tom’s annoyance. Things do not get off to a good start and it is Tom’s dog Sammy that is the glue that brings these two together during an uneasy settling in period.

William gradually opens up, away from his sick mother, and grows as a young boy, enjoying all that village life has to offer, while Mister Tom softens into the father William never had.

But life could never be this good and everything goes wrong when William has to return to SE London when his mother asks for him. After some time Tom and the other villagers wonder why William has not sent a letter saying he arrived safely and was okay, soTom decides to go and check for himself, but

what he finds in Deptford is not good, and this starts off a series of events.

Goodnight Mister Tom is a slice of nostalgic revelry of the not-so-good old days; a reminder of the horrors of nightly bombing raids our parents and grandparents lived through, and, in my mother’s case, the horrors of evacuation where city kids were sent away only to end up being mistreated at the hands of those who merely wanted to take the Government’s money and not really provide proper care. Strangely coincidental was the Deptford street William came from in the play, Grove Street, was where my father was born, so Goodnight Mister Tom holds something personal for me.

There are good performances from the young people, with Elisa de Grey, as the puppeteer who brings Sammy to life, brilliantly becoming invisible within a few minutes while attracting all the eyes to the dog.

FROM BLITZ TO BLOSSOMS

TO PUT a twist on the common saying: “I remember when all this was houses.”

Burgess Park, for all intents and purposes, shouldn’t exist. The 140acre park, bordered by Walworth, Camberwell, Peckham and Bermondsey, is an anomaly: a green oasis in a concrete desert, a new park in an historic city, the beautiful result of London’s most terrifying hour.

Visiting the park today, perhaps to throw a hopeful line into the lake for the biggest fish in the capital or to play a quick game of five-a-side football, it seems unimaginable that the green expanse was once houses, factories and bustling streets – or a “longdecaying industrial shell”, according to a slightly more gritty pre-war news report.

And, were it not for the devastating impact of the Nazi’s Luftwaffe during the Blitz, it may have stayed that way forever. When Southwark’s urban planners emerged blinking from tube stations and Anderson shelters after the nightly raids from the Luftwaffe, they knew that the bloody horror of war had given them an opportunity.

When peace was declared and most of London began to rebuild itself,

plans were unfurled to bulldoze a huge swathe of industrial and residential land to make way for the capital’s newest, and, it was promised, most stylish park, a huge undertaking.

The conversion from “semi-slums and narrow streets” to acres of parkland was understandably far from seamless. The recent construction work at the Elephant and Castle roundabout, to give it some context, was highly disruptive and muchmaligned. It caused noise, dust and traffic headaches. Now imagine a construction scheme that covered an area over a hundred times bigger and lasted for half a century. It was a monumental project that flew in the face of urban development theory: clearing established city landscapes for a rural replacement.

The emergence of the park happened at a snail’s pace. The project began in earnest in the 1970s, when hundreds of families were informed that there houses were to be forcibly bought and bulldozed. This, understandably did not go well and the project was slammed for its chaotic approach, which one critic described as “a string of unconnected and haphazard housing schemes, clearance orders and industrial redevelopment plans.”

The Grand Surrey Canal, which had once injected industry and employment into the area before

becoming a symbol of economic decline and a drowning hazard to children, was drained and filled in in preparation for the green space – an emblem for a changing way of life in north Camberwell.

As the years dragged on, more and more houses and factories were felled and replaced by an ever growing carpet of grass, trees and eventually a lake. As the park grew, it took on many names: the painfully literal North Camberwell Open Space first, then briefly St George’s Park, before Burgess Park was decided upon, to honour long-time councillor and Camberwell alderman Jessie Burgess.

Despite the park’s inexorable growth, by the 1990s the scheme still drew the ire of the borough’s residents. A young Donnachadh McCarthy, now a News columnist, slammed Southwark Council (who took over the running of the project in the mid-1980s) in a 1992 news article for announcing that space which had been cleared by destroying 200 properties would now be used to build… property. He described it as “a complete betrayal of people ousted from their homes”, and many agreed.

The loss of pubs to the green tide was equally mourned, with the Walworth Imprint pleading “what is a village green without a pub?”

Destroying our factories and homes is bad enough, seemed to be the

prevailing opinion, but taking on our pubs was just a step too far.

As the nineties wore on, the park became something of a dark spot in Southwark: an embarrassment to planners and a constant reminder to residents who had lost their homes and gained little. One planner noted in 1996 that the “park looks more like a wasteland in some places” while the then-Leader of Southwark Council Jeremy Fraser was equally damning, if more poetic, when he said: “It’s the ugly duckling that we want to turn into a swan” - a world away from the “Hyde Park of South London” and “the envy of Europe” that was promised.

At the turn of the millennium, however, the park finally came of age.

Millions of pounds worth of investment and grants, combined with the creativity, passion and

engagement of community groups such as Friends of Burgess Park, gave the park the shot in the arm it so desperately needed.

Burgess Park is now a vibrant facility for the whole of the borough’s residents to enjoy, from BMX-riding teens to picnicking pensioners. What began with the falling of Nazi bombs has resulted in the creation of something completely at odds with the Luftwaffe’s aims: a park where Southwark’s diverse community can come together in a landscape dominated by beauty and hope rather than rubble and fear.

A trip to the Hip Hop Chip Shop

was issued instructions and details to be at Chip Shop by 2.30 with a mission to review this new eatery in a busy and buzzing Brixton. It all sounded straightforward enough: a Saturday lunch of fish and chips. Sweet, writes Michael Holland...

On arrival we discovered that this was no ordinary chip shop but a much more interesting place that embraces and pays homage to Hip Hop, with artworks of that genre’s biggest players adorning the walls and their music being pumped out of a sound system that makes the tables throb. It’s all about the (Sea) Bass in Chip Shop. Sorry, I couldn’t resist…

Yes, you can get your cod and chips here but there is another menu that is much more adventurous, where the chips are cut by hand, and the dips and relishes, fishcakes and pies are all made on the premises, which makes those pies pukka by nature and not by name.

She then brought us a nice glass of Pinot Grigio each.

With a start like that we became excited knowing that it was going to get even better.

Mum is a creature of habit and chose Scallops to start, and beautiful things they were, too, with the Samphire and Chorizo accompaniment. She compared them to a similar starter she had last week and declared these the winners.

I went for the Haddock, Caper & Spring Onion Fishcakes with Hollandaise Sauce once I had ascertained that they were, indeed, home made. These two were also winners. And for some reason the wine, with its good fruity notes, began to taste better. Or moreish…

Chip Shop seems quite a small place, with tables and chairs fitted into several nooks and crannies along its long, slim design, and almost all of them window tables.

Skipping over the steak and lobster options, Mum went for the Fish of the Day, which was a Grilled Whole Mackerel with potatoes and salad.

It was the size of ‘the one that got away’ and each end of the sea monster hung over the sides of the plate.

I could see that it was a meaty, fleshy fish and Mum informed me that it had a lot of flavour as she set out, like Captain Ahab, to master that beast.

WHAT’S ON 31

The last time Mum had had this dish she told me was on a boat in some South Indian bay, so while someone straight outta Compton sung about their gangsta life in LA, she got down with the groove and said, ‘Oooh, it’s just like being on holiday, innit?’

I had gone for the Monkfish Tail and Chorizo Skewers, one because I love a bit of monkfish and, two, because it sounded like an interesting dish. I was right; as our waitress brought it from the kitchen all eyes turned to admire this wonderful creation of skewered meat, fish and vegetables hanging from its own purpose-built apparatus.

The power of the chorizo countered the subtle taste of the monkfish and all was enhanced with a good helping of the home made

chilli sauce that certainly gave me something to think about on the way home.

The hand cut chips that accompanied my dish were a delight, and made me think that all was good in the world. Good chips do that, don’t they?

We had both eaten well by now and declined a dessert, as nice as they sounded on the menu. I tried to lure Mum into sharing the White Chocolate and Ginger Cheesecake but she was done in after tackling Jaws.

Chip Shop is a friendly place with helpful, cheery staff and a full house proved that this approach, plus good, fresh food, works.

In the two months Chip Shop has been trading it has already garnered a lot of interest and great reviews, and I can’t argue with that.

Considering moving from Dulwich? 2016 could be the right time

NIGHT FRANK published a report this year that recently shook up UK property news. The company's research department discovered that in Dulwich house price growth had rocketed 897% since 1995. This exceptional growth has exceeded that of any other area in the UK.

In the last three years, growth in Dulwich has been an impressive 53%.

That in itself is a staggering increase.

Dulwich Village has traditionally been one of south east London's most desirable destinations. It has a village aesthetic, albeit an entirely exclusive one, where a parade of independent shops and restaurants are sprinkled amongst Fired Earth, Cafe Rouge and village-style offerings. The central pub is, architecturally, an intact late Victorian/Edwardian masterpiece and traditional English wooden signposts navigate you around wide, grass-banked pavements. Picket fences and gravel drives sweep up to some seriously fabulous detached homes.

The beauty of the area is fiercely protected by the Dulwich Estate, who have owned the 1500-acre area for 400years and directly benefit its schools.

Dulwich in 1605 and some of the country's top independent schools were founded here, all originating in some way from Alleyn's first charitable school for twelve local poor children. Today Dulwich College, JAGS and Alleyn's are all within minutes of each other and attract wealthy international buyers, politicians and celebrity families. It's also worth mentioning the local state primary is outstanding. As the Estate control the area's aesthetic, you simply can't convert your loft without their express permission.

Domestic buyers make up most of the neighbourhood’s property search and are often families looking to find a home offering more value than central London. Trains at North, East and West Dulwich, Denmark Hill, Sydenham Hill and Herne Hill take commuters to London Bridge, Victoria and King's Cross while additional London Overground links are found at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye. Buyers appreciate the large handsome terraces on offer that still give far better value that south west London. Prices per square foot range between £600-£1100 compared to Chiswick and Barnes where prices range between £800-£1300. These areas are

directly comparable in terms of atmosphere and amenities; the Village offers Dulwich Park with a boating lake, good café and tennis courts and ancient Dulwich Woods where Charles I would often hunt. Dulwich Picture Gallery is

The 'ripple effect' is an industry term that means a surrounding area is positively affected by a property hotspot. Prices in nearby East Dulwich have also soared with Rightmove reporting a 50% increase since 2012. A four-bedroom period home near a good state primary school and transport would today be marketed at around £1.2-£1.4million, making most families in this area automatic property millionaires. East Dulwich's high street offers a boutique shopping experience and has attracted some notable chains (JoJo Maman Bebe, Gourmet Burger Kitchen), and all of the schools are performing well.

Demand is coming from the trendiest parts of East London (Shoreditch, Dalston and Old Street) due to the Overground's arrival, and there’s also been a long-term trend of buyers moving across from more expensive Clapham and Battersea. All of these areas are comparable as they offer good restaurants, bars, transport and schools yet East Dulwich is somewhat greener.

Prices in East Dulwich have now been pushed up enough to begin to catching up with its more expensive migration sources. To see what we mean, Rightmove tells us that Clapham prices have risen 35% since 2012 (as

mentioned, East Dulwich has risen 50%).

Over the last year, East Dulwich prices have risen 10% and Clapham 5%. From the Knight Frank research it's also worth noting that Peckham Rye, a direct neighbour of East Dulwich, recorded the second largest high price rise at 820% growth.

If you are considering moving from Dulwich or East Dulwich, then 2016 could well be the year to do it while prices remain at a peak. Different economists predict interest rate rises beginning next year at any time from spring to December, but these will likely be gentle. When rates start to rise, the market can’t rise so ferociously. What is clear is that the remarkable growth seen in these areas will be extremely difficult to sustain.

THE A2 GLA ROAD (OLD KENT ROAD, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2016 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable carriageway widening works to take place on A2 Old Kent Road.

Haye vows quick return after knockout show

BERMONDSEY heavyweight David Haye has said he will be back in the ring soon after a quickfire one round win in his comeback fight last Saturday.

PECKHAM’S JOHNNY Garton will get a chance to become English welterweight boxing king in March when he takes on Tyler Goodjohn for the vacant crown.

Garton was undefeated in 2015 and this put him in prime position for a title shot and it has been confirmed he will take on Goodjohn at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on March 19.

The 28-year-old Southwark man has won sixteen of his eighteen outings, with one loss and one draw also on his professional record.

His Cambridgeshire opponent, who is a former English super lightweight champion, has a record of twelve wins and four draws.

The heavyweight scene is once again rather fragmented following Tyson Fury’s shock win against Wladimir Klitschko last November, when the Manchester man secured four versions of the world crown.

Fury still holds WBA, WBO & IBO belts but American Charles Martin is now IBF champion, thanks to a controversial victory last Saturday against Vyacheslav Glazkov, after the Brit was stripped of that belt.

Another American Deontay Wilder is WBC champion and Fury is eyeing him up should he beat Klitschko in a rematch later this year.

Paths are there for Haye to get a heavyweight crown back at least but unification could be a while away if Fury holds good to his threat never to box the Bermondsey man.

Garton gets title shot

The 35-year-old took just over two minutes to dispatch WBA top ten ranked fighter Mark de Mori at the weekend, and he told a packed crowd after the bout he would be back in the ring soon.

The ex-world heavyweight champion said: “I want to be [fighting] regular and get back in the ring as soon as possible.

I want to keep testing myself and work my way up the world rankings to get a title fight.”

The Southwark man typically fought once or twice a year before a three year sabbatical from the ring ended at the weekend, and although he was hardly

tested against his Aussie opponent Haye looks a different fighter.

He is bigger, seventeen pounds heavier than his last outing in July 2012, and more considered, at least on his latest limited showing, but he can still bang hard as viewers on Freeview channel Dave could see for themselves.

Haye also claims his shoulder is better than ever after extensive reconstructive surgery and de Mori will certainly vouch that it is fine after an overhead right hand knocked him clean out.

Haye, who was also a world champion in the cruiserweight division, added: “It’s been a tough tough road but finally I am back.

“I feel I am better than I have ever been and punching harder than ever.

“De Mori was a tough guy but as soon as the power was there I felt cool and calm in the ring. Nobody on the planet could take those punches.”

HAMLET DEFENDER Mitchell Nelson netted for the third consecutive game on Saturday but his goal was not enough to stop Dulwich exiting the FA Trophy.

In the end the Pink and Blues lost 2-1 to Vanarama National League side Guiseley AFC but Nelson almost forced a replay in injury time only for his effort to hit the woodwork.

The narrow defeat, thanks to first

half goals from Guiseley’s James Hurst and Anthony Dudley, was no disgrace against a team who operate two divisions above the Champion Hill side in the non-league game.

Hamlet have signed Gus Sow from St Albans City in the last week and the midfielder made his Dulwich debut last weekend when he made a late substitute appearance.

Dulwich were displaced as leaders of the Ryman Premier League whilst in cup action last weekend after title rivals Hampton & Richmond Borough picked up three points away at Canvey Island.

DOCKLANDS U14’s got back to winning ways on Sunday, and maintained top spot in their Selkent League, with an impressive 5-1 win against the Adelaide Kings.

The Southwark youngsters were last in action before Christmas but they showed they meant business on their return when John Hayley netted early on after good work from Josh Hyam.

Although the Kings levelled things up Hayley netted again before the break to restore Docklands’ lead.

In the second half Dockland pulled away from their opponents with three more goals with Romeo Barr, Daniel Diagana and Hyam all getting their names on the scoresheet.

LEE GREGORY refused to disclose what his goal target for 2015-16 was when News asked him earlier in the season, but it would be fair to presume he’s probably ahead of schedule.

Gregory scored his 12th and 13th goals of the campaign against a limited Port Vale side, four more than he scored last season.

His first in the 3-1 win over Port Vale on Sunday was a brilliant cushioned header directed back across Jak Alnwick to the far corner from Jed Wallace’s impressively accurate deep cross from the right. Neil Harris felt the difference between this performance and the defeat to Oxford on Thursday night was the quality of delivery and finishing and Gregory’s goal was a fine example of both.

But there was also much more general purpose about Millwall’s play compared to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy setback when the home side gave their League Two rivals far too much space to dictate the terms and tempo of the game, particularly in the first half.

After David Forde’s error gifted Oxford their opener, one of the big prematch talking points on Sunday was whether Harris would restore Jordan Archer to the team.

That question was answered shortly after 2pm when Archer’s name appeared on the teamsheet. Forde said he was unhappy to lose his place in the side earlier in the season and he let Harris know it. One wonders, having reclaimed his place after Archer was sent off in the defeat to Gillingham before Christmas, how he felt now, particularly after putting himself in a promising position to re-enter the conversation regarding Ireland’s firstchoice goalkeeper just months before the European Championships.

Harris said afterwards he uses the same criteria choosing his goalkeeper as for any position, and Archer didn’t take long to justify his selection, making a double save moments after Gregory’s opening goal, diving low to his right to keep out Sam Foley’s shot before getting to his feet to block the followup.

Gregory scored a 93rd-minute penalty he had won himself when Millwall won 2-0 at Vale Park in September, and he repeated that in the 34th minute against Rob Page’s side.

The build-up had been characterised by swift movement of the ball. Jimmy Abdou, making his 300th appearance for the club, flicked on Byron Webster’s pass to Steve Morison, who guided it into Gregory’s path. Gregory feigned to shoot, luring Richard Duffy into a hasty tackle, and then despatched the penalty low to Alnwick’s right with all the confidence of a striker sure of his form.

Morison adds third on 150th league appearance virtually ended the contest. Aiden O’Brien challenged Alnwick before laying the ball back to Gregory. Alnwick was perhaps unlucky to see his save from Gregory’s shot flick off Michael O’Connor and fall kindly for Morison, who finished from close range for his 10th goal of the season. That was also the captain’s 50th goal in 150 league appearances for the Lions.

Millwall eased off in the second half, allowing Port Vale back into the game.

JJ Hooper, signed in the summer from non-league Havant and Waterlooville, scored his first goal for the away side when he ghosted in at the back post to volley O’Connor’s free-kick past Archer.

The Lions should really have made it four in the 69th minute, but Ed Upson’s shot after O’Brien had set him up following a direct run was too tame and Alnwick pushed it away.

Millwall travel to Chesterfield next

Saturday with the knowledge they have lost eight games following a win or a draw this season. With 20 league games remaining, they now need to find a level of consistency to position themselves among the top six.

With their three main attackers on 33 goals between them already this season, and Wallace supplying quality deliveries from the wide areas - for at least four more games - they have every chance of doing so.

MILLWALL’S ON-LOAN midfielder Jed Wallace says he is in a “win-win” situation with the club.

Wallace has played three times for the Lions since his move from Wolves for an initial seven-game spell.

He has been on the winning side twice, and set up the opening goal for Lee Gregory against Port Vale last Sunday to give the home fans a glimpse of what he is capable of.

And the former Portsmouth player isn’t ruling out extending his stay beyond his current deal.

the lads properly. There’s definitely a lot more to do here than there is in Wolverhampton where I’m sat in the flat all afternoon.

“I’m quite social so I’m always out for coffees with people, whereas in Wolverhampton it’s not quite as lively as it is down here.

“My girlfriend can come up and stay for the weekend as well. I’ve moved around quite a bit but I’ve always been less than two hours from home. Even Wolves was only a couple of hours from home and here is an hour, so was Portsmouth.

“So if ever it’s the case that I’ve had a bad day I can go home to my family in Reading, it’s not a problem. But I’ve been having such a good time here I haven’t gone home yet!”

He’s also had a good time on the pitch and Millwall fans have taken to him quickly. He combines his

life in London. The 21-year-old is currently based in Beckenham and is a naturally outgoing character, fitting in with ease at the training ground with his new teammates and staff.

Wallace has so far busied himself getting to know the squad and catching up with old friends. He is in his third different dwelling place in the space of half a year, but has settled quickly in south London from where he can also rely on the support of those closest to him if he needs it.

“I’m really enjoying it,” he said.

“I’ve got a lot of friends in London, with various clubs such as Leyton Orient and Bromley, that I’ve played with before and now they’re in the area.

“I knew a couple of the Millwall boys like John Marquis before I signed. All the boys have been really good. We have a coffee in the afternoon and I’m getting to know

natural flair and pace with a strong work ethic and those who have seen him play so far will hope he stays for the rest of the season.

Millwall are currently just a point off the play-off places and Wallace recognises there is a real chance that the season could build to an exciting climax.

He may or may not still be around come May but he is determined that, even if his stay at Millwall is to be a short one, he will make an important contribution.

“I’ve done League Two for a couple of years and it’s a big gap to the Championship,” he explained. “I wanted to come back to a top eight or nine team in League One and show that I can do what I know I can do, and that’s to be one of the better players. I think I’ve shown that in the last three games and I’ll be doing that in the next four games as well.”

Millwall will visit Kassam Stadium on Tuesday, February 2 to attempt to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern section final.

The club has been allocated 1,497 tickets for the fixture.

Lee Martin made his debut for Northampton last weekend following his 28-day loan move from Millwall.

Martin struggled to make an impression under Neil Harris, starting just four times for Millwall this season before making the switch to the League Two side.

The 28-year-old played 67 minutes in the Cobblers’ 2-1 win at Dagenham & Redbridge last Saturday, a result that leaves them second in the table, trailing Plymouth only on goal difference.

It is unlikely Martin has a future at Millwall and his loan could be extended until the summer.

IT WOULD be nice symmetry if Lee Gregory could win promotion this season with Millwall and pass the twenty-goal mark, writes John Kelly...

The last Lions player to achieve the milestone was Steve Morison when he scored 23 goals in all competitions as Kenny Jackett’s side went up to the Championship in 2009-10.

Millwall are currently well-placed to achieve the same this season, and with Morison and Aiden O’Brien also on ten goals each it appears scoring won’t be the reason if they end up having to face another campaign in League One. Morison scored his tenth goal of the season last weekend, meaning Millwall have three players on double figures for the first time since 200102 when Steve Claridge (18), Richie Sadlier (17) and Tim Cahill (13) were the main attacking threats.

Asked if he has readjusted his target for the season, 27-year-old Gregory said: “I’m not going to tell you! But it’s getting there, it’s getting closer and when I get there I’ll tell you.

“I always said I wanted double figures before Christmas. I’m happy with thirteen at the minute.”

Gregory’s thirteenth goal this season was a penalty he had won himself in the 34th minute against Port Vale. The moments preceding it, when Jak Alnwick tried to put him off, gave an insight into his current confidence.

Gregory explained: “The keeper was giving me a bit of banter before, saying ‘I know where you’re going, I’m going to save it’. I told him I was going left and he still couldn’t save it.

“I knew where I was going from the start, I said before the game I was going to go left. The times that I’ve missed a penalty is when I’ve changed my mind on the spot, so now

I say to myself, ‘Don’t change your mind’. If I miss it it’s going to be a good save and you can’t blame anything else.”

Millwall’s performance against Port Vale was a big improvement on the one in the defeat to Oxford the previous Thursday, and Gregory praised boss Neil Harris for making a couple of tactical tweaks against a Vale side who were just a point behind them before Sunday’s clash.

“The gaffer said to us that we needed to just take that extra touch to ensure the midfielders have a chance to get up to us,” Gregory said.

“We kind of rushed it against Oxford. I think we were so eager to score we panicked and it didn’t come.

“So it was important to take that extra touch and make sure your midfield is supporting you and I think it did the job.

“It’s credit to the gaffer who also told us not to press every single thing, just press the things you think you can win.

“Against Oxford we were trying to press everything and we were picked off. On Sunday we sat off a little bit, let them keep it, set the trap to nick the ball and then the whole team knows we’re going (to counter) at the same time.”

Gregory will now be a marked man for the rest of the season, but he shrugs off any pressure that might bring and prefers to concentrate on his own game and maintaining his current form.

“I really don’t think about that, to be honest, that’s the last thing on my mind,” he said.

“I’ve felt comfortable all year but didn’t play to the standards I should have at the start of the season. I lacked a bit of consistency before, but hopefully I can keep this going.”

SHANE FERGUSON will play his last game for Millwall at Chesterfield, unless a deal can be worked out with Newcastle to extend his stay.

JOHN MARQUIS was on target as Millwall’s Elite Development Squad came from behind to draw with Charlton last Monday.

The result leaves Justin Skinner’s side trailing their London rivals by seven points at the top of the Professional Development League 2 table, but having played two games fewer.

Marquis pounced in the 84th minute for his first goal for the club since his return from his loan spell at Leyton Orient to cancel out Joe Pigot’s opener.

Twenty-three-year-old Marquis could still

leave the club in January, but senior manager Neil Harris was full of praise for his striker.

“We do have enquiries about our players, asking about availability. They’re good players so there is always going to be interest,” Harris said.

“John has come off the bench in the last two league games and made a contribution to us winning. He’s been really bright and bubbly since he’s come back in. He’s adding another dimension to the squad at the moment.”

Skinner named a strong side against Charlton, and Harris said it is important for those on the fringes of the first team to get competitive action.

“A couple of players that didn’t play on Sunday needed some minutes. It was a good game, I really enjoyed watching it,” Harris said.

“They’re two strong sides, very committed sides playing the game the way it should be played. They want to force their way into firstteam football.

“There were some good performances from our players and a good all-round team performance.

“A lot of the youngsters have got the pedigree and the physical attributes, it’s just now about learning the tactical side of it and that comes with time.”

MILLWALL WILL look at other targets if they cannot reach agreement with Newcastle to sign Shane Ferguson.

The 24-year-old Northern Ireland international is set to play the final game of his current loan deal at Chesterfield this weekend.

His loss would be a huge blow to manager Neil Harris, who expressed some frustration this week that the situation has dragged on as long as it has.
