A WALWORTH man who stabbed and battered two coppers with a knife as they tried to rescue a baby from his arms was sentenced on Monday.

Southwark bobbies, Jack Collins and Jack Muscatt, wrestled 21-year-old Carlos Djau to the ground and arrested him during a desperate struggle at a house in Cook’s Road, Walworth.

Better late than never, Lewisham

S

O LEWISHAM Council have announced that they will appoint an independent expert, to look at Millwall’s regeneration proposals better late than never, as they say.

For the local authority to press ahead with property developer Renewal’s plans, without involving the club, never made any sense. If you want to bulldoze the Den and just build property, then yes, don’t involve the club.

But back in the real world, the football club isn’t just integral to the area earmarked for redevelopment - it’s what defines it. Trying to build around it without involving it is simply to ignore the beating heart at the centre of the scheme.

It’s a shame that it has taken such vociferous protest from so many, in order to bring Lewisham Council to their senses and no doubt grudgingly, at that. But the hope now must be that a sensible negotiation can be reached, which allows for development, but also allows the club to benefit from the transformation of the area, and thus ensures its survival.

T’S NOT the first time that questions have been raised over investments made by or on behalf of Southwark Council - and it’s unlikely to be the last.

A co-signed letter, including from local MP Neil Coyle, takes the council to task for its pension funds including investment in fossil fuels. Of its £1.2bn pension fund, £60.6m is in fossil fuels - the vast majority through fund managers, but with £1.47m directly invested. To add insult to injury, campaigners point out that plummeting oil prices mean that the investments have lost the pension fund money.

The council not unreasonably argues that it has to seek maximum return on its investments, and if you were relying on them for your pension, no doubt you’d agree. It also says that divesting from fossil fuels would cost the fund - and of course, if you sell in a trough, that stands to reason.

But it’s wrong to couch the issue in terms of the impact selling the shares would have on the industries. If Southwark Council decided to rid itself of fossil fuel investments, it wouldn’t be so much about impacting on the respective businesses, but about the authority making a statement about the kind of investments it wanted to be associated with. It’s not about bringing down the industry, it’s about the council nailing its colours to the mast.

Having said that, it’s not so black and white as it may first appear. Who among us doesn’t use fossil fuels? And where do you draw the line? So whilst the tobacco and arms industries draw a fairly united response, should the council not invest in companies that sell alcohol? Or fast food? Or sugary drinks? Pharmaceuticals? The list goes on and on.

Which investments are always going to be ethically sound, and who decides that?

A PECKHAM couple say they have been overwhelmed by gifts and kind messages from neighbours who love their ever-changing front-garden display.

Every day, Margit Mulder and Dom Spicca write a unique and intriguing message on a chalkboard, leaving it for passersby to read as they walk past their house in Asylum Road.

They have kept up the positive messages since June 2014, and have since been given cards, cakes and handwritten notes. The 47-year-old Margit even had one person tell them the little pick-me-ups helped saved their life.

“We change it all the time, but it’s always something positive, inspiring, or aspirational, and encouraging,” Margit said.

“My favourite one has been a quote from Oscar Wilde: ‘Be yourself – everyone else is taken’.

“It’s about empowering people and giving them self-belief and trying to make the most of every day. We always want the message to say something inspiring and uplifting.

“I often just come home to find letters from people on my doormat with people telling me how the sign really changes their mood and gives them a lift every time they walk past.”

Margit, an illustrator and brand developer who has worked with Saatchi & Saatchi and the Body Shop, said one day a woman knocked on the door and told them their messages brought them back from the brink.

“We had a knock on the door one day from a woman who said she was going to end her life. She said she was walking past and then she saw one of our blackboard messages.

“She said it changed everything for her.

We’re now good friends and we keep in

touch.”

Margit says the peculiar story started after a man came out of the blue and offered to help with some difficultlooking gardening.

“We were trying to get rid of a massive plant that we nicknamed the Big Friendly Giant, and this man saved us the trouble of getting professional help and removed it for us,” she said.

“But we didn’t exchange phone numbers and I wanted to thank him somehow. So I put up the sign telling him to say hello if he ever walked past.

“We didn’t hear from him, but we got loads of reaction from other people, and it just made me realise how much people really do like to read and give a friendly response to things they see.”

Margit, who is also studying to be a wellbeing practitioner for children with domestic issues, said it gave herself and her husband the idea of doing something different with it every day.

Walworth man is ordered to stay in hospital after he pleads guilty to assault and unlawful wounding

PCs Collins and Muscatt each received a ‘Bravery of the Year Award’ at the fifth annual Met Police Total Policing Awards in February.

They were chosen after a public vote, which saw 40,000 people take part.

Their awards were presented by Home Secretary, Theresa May, and praised

by Met Police commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe.

“The Total Excellence Awards showcase the professionalism of our best leaders, volunteers, officers and staff, teamwork, excellence in overcoming adversity and so much more,” Sir Hogan-Howe said.

“Such remarkable acts of professionalism and selfless acts of bravery are often carried out in the Metropolitan Police Service, but rarely remarked upon.

“My officers and staff joined the Met to serve and protect Londoners and make our city safer for everyone.”

A WALWORTH man who stabbed and battered two coppers with a knife as they tried to rescue a baby from his arms was sentenced on Monday.

On February 28, last year, the two officers had reports of a man with mental-health issues threatening to kill a three-month old baby with a knife.

Remarkably, both officers then worked together to subdue Djau, and he was handcuffed just as back-up arrived outside.

Both officers were treated in hospital for their injuries and later discharged.

Djau was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of attempted murder. But the charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and unlawful wounding.

He was sentenced in Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, but has avoided jail.

Djau, of Cooks Road, was ordered by the judge to stay in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983 for an unspecified amount of time.

Arson attack on flat where cannabis farm was found

They arrived at the house to find a chaotic scene, with its occupants screaming in fear.

Both officers had radioed for assistance, but knew they had to move quickly to protect the life of the baby and the other occupants.

They approached powerfully-built Djau and he retreated with the baby into a bedroom and slammed the door shut, placing the baby on the bed.

The officers knew using CS gas would be too dangerous with the baby locked inside, so they burst in and set upon Djau.

Still bearing the blade in hand, Djau swiped twice at PC Collins, catching his head and shoulder, and barely missing PC Muscatt.

Such was the force behind the blow from the knife that the blade broke off as it clashed with PC Collins’s Met-vest. Djau then rained punches

POLICE HAVE made one arrest after finding a cannabis farm at a Camberwell estate, where an explosion left two severely injured last week.

The explosion happened in a caretaker’s storeroom on the groundfloor at the Coniston House flats in Wyndham Road, where cannabis was being grown on an industrial scale.

London Fire Brigade and police were dispatched to fight the blaze at

1.20am on Monday April 11. The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and bailed to a date in late June.

A 24-year-old man is in a critical condition, having been admitted to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital burns unit. A man of 29 is in a serious but stable condition at a south London hospital

The fire brigade reported that a number of residents had to be evacuated, and that 21 firefighters from Peckham, Brixton and Old Kent Road were dispatched.

Forensic investigations were being undertaken by police this week, and the Met is appealing with witnesses to come forward, and call them on 101.

A WALWORTH teenager has become the Thai boxing world champion holder after overpowering his closest rival in the ring on Saturday night.

John Haggerty, nineteen, finished off his 28-year-old opponent, Gery Bevetto from Italy, after three quick rounds at the Copthorne Hotel in Effingham.

The young gym instructor, who has mastered the obscure but deadly sport from his dad since the age of nine, said it was a “dream come true”.

Speaking to the News while recovering on Monday, John said: “I’m still buzzing, but it’s a massive weight off my shoulders.

“I had been training really hard: literally just sleep, eat, train, and repeat every day.

“But I couldn’t believe it took just three rounds. It was overwhelming.”

John said fighters from all over the world had come for fights between different weight classes on the night.

But the 57kg local lad’s 9pm match was the main event for the 150-strong crowd watching.

Thai boxing, a combat sport where fighters exchange blows with knees and elbows as well as with kicks and punches, is known for being the most dangerous of the mainstream martial arts.

John has since heard his opponent was left needing stitches on his head from a hit with John’s elbow.

“When he went out the ring there was blood all over his face, but it’s kicking that I’m best at,” John said.

“I had been training three weeks before the big fight out in Thailand, and

I often train where I work, at my dad’s gym, Team Underground LMA in Old Kent Road.

“After the fight my dad told me he could just tell from how hard I had been training that it was just going to be a walk in the park.”

As soon as the finishing bell rang, his mum and dad Lisa and John ran into the ring.

“We both got in there and I gave him a big hug and a kiss,” Lisa said.

“I’m absolutely over the moon, I’m well proud, he has dreamed of being the world champion for years.

“The atmosphere was brilliant, we had lots of friends and family all come down to cheer him on.

“Now he is just going to have a rest because he has worked so hard.”

John said: “I want to carry on doing this for as long as I can and get as many titles for different classes as I can.

“I love doing it. It’s a beautiful sport, it should be in the Olympics.”

SOUTHWARK NEWS MD, Chris Mullany, has raised another £3,000 plus towards our £100,000 target for Evelina Children’s Hospital, after completing the Marathon des Sables - the toughest footrace in the world.

Chris spent a week covering 160 miles in six days, including a gruelling 55 mile day, in temperatures of up to 104 degrees, with a twelve kilo backpack, and scaling thousands of metres of sand and rock.

Organisers said it was the hottest, hardest and longest one yet, with 140 people dropping out or being evacuated out of a starting field of some 1200. Chris finished 553rd, just making the top half of the field.

“It was a brutal week!” he said. “I got heat stroke, stomach problems, shin splints, a dodgy knee and back, eleven blisters, antibiotics for infected blisters, a heat rash all over my legs and lost a stone!

But the desert was so varied and beautiful, and it was well worth the effort to push us over the £95,000 mark, with donations still coming in.”

MP calls on council to stop investing millions in fossil fuel

LABOUR MP Neil Coyle has co-signed a letter to the News calling on Southwark Council to take millions of pounds out of fossil fuel investments.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP joined human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, vicar Giles Goddard, Green Party chair Colin Boyle, Law Centre director Sally Causer and Greenpeace chair Jean-Charles Roghi.

Working with the Fossil Free Southwark campaign, their letter hopes to highlight how the “unethical” investments of the council’s pension fund are also wasting money.

Their joint letter says: “…Every penny of our tax that ends up in fossil fuels helps exacerbate global warming and air pollution.

“It also makes good business sense to divest, as fossil fuels have performed poorly in recent years, and are at risk of becoming even less financially viable.”

Mr Coyle also told the News: “I think they should take the same approach with fossil fuel investments as they have did with tobacco, where they took their investments out of those a few years ago.”

Fossil Free Southwark say the plummeting value of crude oil has meant “poor” investments cost the council 2.4m last year.

Councillor Fiona Colley, cabinet member for finance, said: “Our main considerations when investing the pension fund have to be our ability to provide secure pensions for our staff and value for money for council taxpayers.

“Of course ethical considerations are important too, but we think there are more effective ways of using our pension fund to have a positive impact. Selling our shares would have very little impact on multimillion pound industries. Instead we are working collectively with other funds and shareholders to lobby big business to make positive changes.

“Contrary to what the protestors say, if we were to divest from fossil fuels it would cost the fund. All of these factors will feed into a wider review of our investment strategy later this year.”

LEWISHAM COUNCIL have appointed an independent expert to look at Millwall FC’s regeneration proposals after meeting with club officials at The Den on April 13.

The council will also consider the

‘potential for a negotiated settlement between the relevant parties locally’ after the club emphasised it should be involved with plans for the project.

Cabinet ministers met Millwall’s chief executive Andy Ambler, chairman John Berylson and Steve Bradshaw of the Millwall Community Trust, as well as

developers and stakeholders, after a petition opposing property developers Renewal’s plans gathered nearly 12,000 signatures.

A Lewisham Council spokesman said: “They [the council] listened to all points of view about how the area could benefit from major redevelopment; the club’s needs into the future; and the importance of

“The Council are pleased that there is so much enthusiasm for change and regeneration.”

Concerns have been raised over Renewal’s plans for ‘New Bermondsey’ as they have not undertaken a project this size before and are not obliged to complete it if the land is purchased by compulsory order.

Mr Berylson said: "The opportunity to speak directly to Cabinet members regarding our plans for the regeneration was an incredibly important step.

“It is vital that we fully participate in the regeneration of the local area and Wednesday's meeting was a platform for us to reiterate how dependent our involvement would be in terms of Millwall Football Club's future financial stability.

"All we have ever asked is for Millwall to be allowed to play a part in this important and much needed regeneration and not to be left on the sidelines as a reluctant spectator.”

Millwall FC submitted their own £140m plans in 2013 to build 400 homes, artist workshops, student accommodation and the safeguarding of their community centre.

Renewal’s plans are set to create 2,400 homes, a £42m sports complex, a multi-faith centre, a hotel, medical facilities, a conference centre and a new Overground train station.

Renewal were approached for comment but there was no reposnse at the time of going to press.

Commuters watch as animal takes morning trip to Imperial War Museum

A FOX joined commuters on the number twelve bus on Monday morning as it headed from Elephant and Castle to Oxford Circus.

Bemused onlookers saw the fox hop aboard the Routemaster just before 8am on April 18, where it made it to the top deck before getting off at the Imperial War Museum.

Journalist Andrew Woodcock witnessed the event and tweeted: "That

stuff about urban foxes adapting to city life is clearly nonsense. This one didn't even have his Oyster card."

Mr Woodcock, of East Dulwich, told the News: "I looked down and it was a fox, walking along the aisle towards the front staircase. It had its head down low and was slinking along as if trying to avoid being noticed, but it didn't seem panicked or scared at all. Everyone

SANTANDER AND Co-Op Food have announced they will both close their shops in The Blue, Bermondsey, in the coming months.

Co-Op Food will be the first to go from the shopping area in Southwark Park Road on May 7 followed by Santander in August, after a strategic review of the bank’s customer usage levels, lease agreements and costs revealed it was no

longer viable.

A Co-Op Food spokesperson said: "The decision is not, in any way, a reflection on the commitment and hard work of the store team.

“Colleagues have been informed and every effort is being made to find alternative positions at nearby stores.”

Santander has echoed the commitment to find existing staff jobs elsewhere by looking to transfer them into branches close by or into other roles.

Fifteen years for rape and assault on teenage girls With the second teenaged victim, the judge said Storey had used his respectable position as a youth leader to gain her trust, and sexually assaulted her on two separate occasions.

“Your influence over her was total.

You had been insidiously grooming her for a year,” the judge said.

He then read aloud a statement written by the second victim, in which she said: “I will be living with these scars for the rest of my life.”

Jailing Storey for a decade and a half, Judge Katz said he had manipulated both of the “vulnerable” and “unworldly” teenagers “into situations

where you knew it was going to be their word against yours”.

He added: “They both trusted you, as did many others. Your behaviour also demonstrates rank hypocrisy.”

Storey had been convicted of the four charges during a retrial on February 18, in which it was heard that both women were church goers who, at an early age, had attended summer camps and congregations led

As well as his fifteen-year sentence, Storey will also spend four years on licence after completing the fifteen years behind bars.

A CHURCH youth-leader from Peckham has been locked up for fifteen years for raping and sexually assaulting two “vulnerable” teenagers from his congregation.

Timothy Storey, 35, of Peckham Grove, was sentenced in Woolwich Crown Court on Friday for three counts of rape and one of assault by penetration.

The court heard how the Oxford-

educated and ordained trainee vicar manipulated his victims into meeting up with him via sexting and social media messages.

The two young women Storey was found guilty of raping had given evidence following an appeal by Scotland Yard in May 2014. At that time, the paedophile had just been handed a three-year sentence for grooming girls aged ten to sixteen, and encouraging them to perform sexual acts via social media.

Storey made both of his “insidious” attacks on the two women, who were over the age of consent, in

2008 and 2009.

He raped one of the women at his former home in Oxford after taking her to a concert and plying her with alcohol.

During the hearing, attended by Storey’s mum and dad, the Judge Philip Katz QC described how Storey got the woman so drunk she missed her train home. She was then forced to stay the night with Storey, where he later assaulted her.

“The psychological harm you caused her was so severe. The incident changed the course of her life,” Judge Katz said.

“Nevertheless, we fully acknowledge the comments that have been made by the judge and we are committed to ensuring that lessons are learned and acted upon.

“We will now be commissioning a thorough independent review of our own handling of the case and will be contacting Timothy Storey's victims accordingly.”

The silent killer

PECKHAM: Four men were taken to hospital on April 17 as emergency services were called to Rye Lane, Peckham, to deal with reports of raised carbon monoxide levels.

The men were rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus as they swept the building after twenty people were evacuated by the gas authority.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers responded to elevated levels of carbon monoxide in a range of shops with flats above them following the use of a petrol generator.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Carbon monoxide is a silent killer, with least 50 deaths nationally recorded every year as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Despite this, the majority of people still do not have a carbon monoxide detector in their home. It is vital that everyone has a carbon monoxide alarm in addition to smoke alarms.”

After evacuating and ventilating the building, crews monitored the carbon monoxide levels until it was safe.

The Brigade was called at 4:31pm and the incident was over by 7:45pm. Fire crews from New Cross, Deptford and Lewisham attended the scene.

ARMENTS PIE and mash shop celebrated 102 years of feeding the community on April 14 with decorations and a stall for Homes for Heroes.

The institution has been a staple of local diets since 1914 and was started

by Emily and William Arment at 386 Walworth Road at the outbreak of World War One. The shop moved to its current location of 7-9 Westmoreland Road in 1979 as the business grew and is now run by third generation Arments Roy and Cheryl.

Cheryl said: “We are part of the community. It is not really ours it’s our customers'. They always say 'don’t change our shop' and that's why we try to fill it with lots of nostalgia.

“Even people who move away make sure they do a little pilgrimage here when they are on holiday.

“We’ve started sending our pies to all over parts of the country too, including as far as Jersey. We’ve surprisingly even got a following in Germany after one of their TV channels did a piece about Elephant and Castle.”

A Pearly King and Queen helped mark the occasion by setting up a stall outside the shop to raise money for charity.

The Canada Water West Action Group, who were formed to oppose the destruction of the small woodland, believe the new centre should be built elsewhere in order to conserve the threatened wildlife patch.

The green patch was recently renamed as “Ada’s Garden” marking the environmental campaigner’s 150th birthday, by the Rotherhithe residents.

Catherine Whitaker, chair of the Canada Water West Residents’ Action Group, said: “The re-naming of the wildlife area and the creation of a new sign shows just how much local people value this natural resource.

She added that the council’s consultation “glosses over the fact that the area is full of mature trees and is a rare wild space that cannot be replaced.”

CHILDREN FROM Southwark Park Primary School visited the Houses of Parliament on April 18, after they were invited by the Member of Parliament for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Neil Coyle.

The children enjoyed full access to the palace and were later joined by Neil for a picture and questions.

Neil said: “Today, Southwark Park Primary School visited Parliament they had a full tour, seeing both the Commons and the Lords, and then I met them in Westminster Hall.

“They asked me lots of questions about why I wanted to be an MP, about academies and university fees, the daily routine as an MP and what they could do to help the environment.

“It was great to see the students here and I would like more local schools to cross the river and visit Parliament.”

Westminster is open to school visits and is able to pay some travel costs.

First-choice for 85% of parents

THE NUMBER of Southwark mums and dads whose kids were given their first-choice of primary school has seen a dramatic improvement compared to 2015.

After confirmation came through parents’ letter boxes on Monday, data from the Greater London Authority has shown there were 3,380 children contending for places.

This year, 85 per cent of parents who applied for a reception place for their child were given their first preference.

The figure is a five per cent boost from last year, and shows the borough is bucking the national trend, where the shortage of school places across England is projected to get worse.

Southwark was shown to have fared better than the London average of 84 per cent, while just outside of London, Reading saw only 78.6 per

cent win their first choice.

But there were still 70 families, two per cent of applicants, whose children were not offered one of their six preferences at all, and have been given an alternative place.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark cabinet member for children and schools, said: “I’m delighted to see this year-on-year improvement in our allocations, allowing the vast majority of parents to choose which school they want their children to go to.

“Southwark is fortunate to have brilliant schools, with 92% rated good or outstanding, but it is still hugely important that parents have a say in which school will best meet the needs of their child.

“Southwark has planned and invested carefully for the growing demand for reception places and created new places at schools across the borough. Our approach is paying off, and we will continue to monitor demand to ensure we are able to cater for all our children in the years to come.”

The victorious dancing queen adds to her existing trophies, as last year, she once again impressed judges by

winning an Irish trophy at the under 9s Open championships at the McRoibin Feis.

Maisie’s teacher, former Irish dancing world champion Deborah Whelan, said: “Maisie is a dream to teach and she is doing really good for her age.

“If she can do it now, there’s high hopes that she should be in the top five soon and then top ten in the world.”

Maisie’s is part of the Deborah Whelan Dance school in East Dulwich.

CANCER CENTRE FINISHED

BUILDERS HAVE finished the job on the new £160 million Guy’s Hospital Cancer Centre, where new patients will be welcome from autumn.

Construction on the fourteen-storey tower, located on the corner of Snowsfields and Great Maze Pond, officially finished on Monday, nearly three years to the day since demolition began.

The next phase of the project will see the centre kitted out with Europe’s first above-ground radiotherapy machines, as well as six linear accelerators.

Pitching their tent against housing bill

OVER 80 people slept in tents on the pavement and held banners outside Southwark Council’s Tooley street headquarters last week to protest against the Government’s Housing Bill.

They fear the changes would result in less affordable homes for the people who need it the most.

The full walkout of junior doctors on April 26 and 27 will be the first time they leave accident and emergency services as part of an

ongoing dispute between the British Medical Association and the Government over plans to enforce changes to contracts.

Dr Chris James, an organiser of the event, said: “For a show of support and solidarity on Denmark Hill - it was clear from the library March that this community has a huge heart - we want to make sure the NHS workers at King’s, the public at large and the Government are under no illusions about our resolve and determination to stand together for what we know to be fair and right.”

The responsibilities of the striking junior doctors will be taken care of by consultants for the duration of the protest.

A STREET procession through St George’s Fields will kick off celebrations for St George’s Day at the 10th annual Southwark Festival.

Southwark is especially connected to the saint because The church of St George the Martyr was one of the first in England to be dedicated to St George.

There will also be an outdoor show of St George and Dragonia, poetry reading and a jazz concert.

The parade will start from St George’s Cathedral to St George the Martyr Church, from 2pm, the theatre will start at 3pm, and the jazz concert at 7pm, on April 23. Admission Free.

GPs encourage Southwark residents to get to know their bowels A

pril is bowel cancer awareness month and GPs in Southwark are reminding local people to ensure they take part in regular screening.

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK. The problem is that far too few people with bowel cancer are diagnosed in the early stages. Some people either find it uncomfortable to discuss the symptoms or simply do not know what they are.

However, if diagnosed in the early stages, it's highly treatable. Regular screenings can help to save thousands of lives.

Symptoms of bowel cancer may include: • •

bleeding from the bottom blood in your poo

• •

a change in your normal bowel habit lasting three weeks or more extreme tiredness for no obvious reason unexplained weight loss.

If you notice these symptoms, speak to your GP. And remember you can talk to your GP about anything. They've seen it all before, so there's no need to be embarrassed.

There are lots of things you can do to help reduce your risk of bowel cancer, like trying to maintain a diet high in fibre, for example by eating wholegrains such as brown rice and granary bread, and avoiding too many processed meats, such as ham, bacon and sausages.

Older people are most at risk of bowel cancer, but younger people

can be affected too. Currently, everyone between the ages of 60 and 69 who is registered with a GP is offered bowel cancer screening every two years. People in this age group will automatically be sent an invitation followed by a screening kit so they can do the test at home.

The screening doesn’t take long and is done in the privacy of your own home. It is important that your GP has your correct name and address for you to receive this. If you have any questions about screening or are concerned you have missed your invitation, just ask your GP. Brain surgery brothers to pound the streets

T

wo Rotherhithe brothers who have both undergone major brain surgery are running the London Marathon on April 24 in support of The National Brain Appeal.

Daniel, 31, and Joe, 28, Flaherty are taking part in the run for the first time after they suffered severe brain conditions eleven years apart.

Father of one, Daniel, who works in the construction industry, will be running just ten months and one day after 95 per cent of a non-cancerous tumour was removed at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

He said: “I had promised myself that if came through this I would apply to do the marathon.

“I’m just aiming to finish the course, I’m not Mo Farah. Equally, I don’t want them to be sweeping up behind me because I’m taking so long.”

Younger brother, Joe, a PE teacher,

had emergency surgery as a teenager in 2004 after a head injury playing football left him paralysed down his left-side weeks later.

Surgeons at King’s College Hospital removed a large part of his skull and found an abscess, leaving him in need of a titanium plate and physiotherapy.

He said: “It shook me up when Daniel was diagnosed but it also gave me the opportunity to step up and support my brother, who has always been there for me.

“Running the marathon on behalf of The National Brain Appeal charity feels like my way of saying thank you to all of the staff at The National Hospital for taking such good care of him.”

4 BERMONDSEY LOCAL Kevin Downey will run his 27th London Marathon this Sunday, raising money for the Evelina Children’s Hospital.

After failing to gain a place in the marathon on his own, Kevin came to News for help and is now part of the Southwark News and Lambeth Weekender’s campaign to raise £100,000 for the Waterloo based hospital.

He said: “Being told I could run for the Evelina Children’s Hospital cheered me right up.”

The-57-year old has no plans on hanging up his running shoes any time soon, despite already having run over 676 miles around London.

“I don’t have any other hobbies, only going to watch Millwall. So I’m going to try and do 3 more so when it’s my 30thmarathon I’ll be 60.”

Over the 26 years Kevin has raised more than £70,000 for children’s charities in the area.

DOMINIC CAIN, Assistant Director Revenues and Benefits Southwark Council, is preparing to run his first marathon in memory of two work colleagues and friends.

The 44-year-old is raising money for Bowel Cancer UK in honour of his colleagues Calvin and Mike, who were lost to the disease in a short space of time in 2014. Both had worked at Southwark in Revenues and Benefits and their loss had a profound impact on many of people.

Dominic said: “It was a big loss. It was a really painful time for everybody. That’s why I’m running the marathon, in memory of Mike and Calvin and to try to get the message out there about bowel cancer and the importance of early diagnosis.”

EAST DULWICH professional, Tony Mok, is running the Marathon in honour of his mum who is living with multiple sclerosis.

The 34-year-old is now aiming to raise £750 for the MS Society after already reaching his original target.

Tony's mum Irene, 54, first started having symptoms while she was running their family restaurant. She started having trouble with her balance and with walking until she found being on her feet all day was

EMMA D’ARCEY, 40, from Bermondsey is fulfilling her dream to run the London Marathon after trying to get a place in the ballot for twelve years.

The textile designer is aiming to raise over £1,500 for a charity in Kolkata, India, which provides a home for life for disabled children and young adults who have no family and have been abandoned on the streets of Kolkata, India. The charity currently supports 22 young people.

Emma said: “The money I raise will go towards the day to day running costs of shuktara – such as buying food and clothing for the children and young people.

“I have butterflies in my stomach when I think of race day - it’s a

mixture of excitement and anticipation. Apart from getting round in one piece I am aiming to help get as much exposure as possible for shuktara. I think it will be an exciting day!”

ready to run his second marathon after 12 years for Guide Dogs UK.

The 41-year-old said: “I’ve been running for years so this feels like nothing major really, but nerves do come and go.”

Being a postman means Richard is on his feet all day long, but he really picked up his training in December varying from long endurance runs, running up and down hills, to short spurts of half an hour.

Richard’s favourite part of the marathon is the Blackfriars Underpass.

“Running through there is amazing.

IN THE mid-nineteenth century, Peckham was a rural village in the Royal Borough of Surrey, and home to a small but influential circle of Quaker families, writes Owen Sheppard...

Though still a Christian denomination, they stood apart from the Church of England for their strict moral steer and commitment to modest living, while serving to improve the lives of their fellows.

Undoubtedly the most influential Peckham-ite to come from this Quaker contingency was Elizabeth Taylor, who later married one of the founders of Cadbury’s chocolate, George Cadbury.

As a young woman, Elizabeth made it her mission to relieve Peckham of its high levels of illiteracy. She held reading-and-

writing groups at the former Quaker Centre, now the Royal Mail delivery office in Highshore Road.

Former Peckham resident, Antony Barlow, 75, is the grandson of one of Elizabeth’s cousins, and to this day can remember meeting her before she died in 1951.

“I went to her 90th birthday. There is a picture in my book from 1949 of her and I in a huge family photo were there’s about 150 of us, all related to each other in one way or another.

“I actually remember finding her frightening when I was a boy. To a seven-year-old, such a respected 90year-old seemed very impressive and charismatic.

“She spoke four languages, and they even spoke English using ‘thou art’ and ‘thy’. I can still remember

could tell, even when she was young, how far she would go because she was so bright. She was a determined young lady.”

Elizabeth, who was later made Dame Elizabeth Cadbury, would have been in her twenties when she got to know another influential Quaker of the West Midlands, George Cadbury.

Antony says they would have met through family occasions, and she “would certainly had impressed George,” with her social work.

Though both humble Quakers, George and his brother Richard’s not-so-modest aim was mass produce chocolate as an alternative to the vice of drinking.

George and Richard first based their Cadbury’s chocolate business on the outskirts of Birmingham, by the river Bourne. With the Quaker ethos, they also created a community, with homes, schools and shared amenities for their workers.

“They used the French word for

town: ‘ville’ which was located on the river Bourne. That’s where Bourne-Ville comes from,” Antony said, adding: “It was a welfare system before this country had welfare – they were well ahead of their time”.

The chocolate-making Quaker families like Cadbury, Rowntree and Lindt were also extremely competitive, and resorted to spying and espionage to deduce the perfect blends and chocolate recipes.

Elizabeth was George’s second wife. She was quite a lot younger than him, and she lived as a widow for 31 years after George’s death in 1920.

Antony said: “She lived for an incredible amount of time. She was born during the French Revolution, was one of the first women to run for parliament, and she died as we were experimenting with flight.”

The Glory of Surrey Quays SUPER NOODLE 1B ROTHERHITHE OLD ROAD, SE16 2PP 0207 232 1323 THE CALL came to go and review Super Noodle by Surrey Quays Station so along we went.

Alas, we were soon rather discombobulated on discovering there was no such place! After walking up and down the parade of shops a cab office offered some hope when the Controller checked up Super Noodle on the computer for us: ‘Nearest one is in Toronto,’ he laughed. ‘Wanna cab?’

In a panic I telephoned HQ and was given more precise instructions, and found that it was the place I had originally been to with Chinese writing above the door. I guess these hieroglyphics must mean Super

Noodle.

But by using Chinese writing they are cleverly putting themselves out there as an authentic Chinese restaurant where you can go deep into the mysterious side of Chinese cuisine that is not for the meek and the fussy, and where the English translations are as mystifying as the Chinese symbols.

So, we began with a bottle of Tsing Tao each, merely to rehydrate after our stroll through Southwark Park, you understand, plus to whet our appetites as we perused a really interesting, but exhaustive, menu; too much choice tends to confuse and befuddle, I find. As we turned the pages forward, and then back, and then forward again while we tried to agree and finalise our potential feast I felt myself fading. But then my companion’s eyes lit up: ‘It says they have Morning Glory!’ she squealed with half-hidden schoolgirl delight.

‘Yeh, well slow yourself down cos it’s just like spring greens and not whatever you’re thinking.’

As she continued trawling the menu I checked out the other customers and found a very multicultural mix of

Chinese, African, East European and French, so knew that the local Bermondsey people are the customer base.

Eventually we started off sharing a Hot & Sour Soup: a gelatinous, eyewatering affair that had a fantastic chilli kick - a good start to the evening.

Next to quickly follow was the Salt & Pepper Chilli Squid that came nicely presented with vegetables carved to resemble exotic flowers.

The squid had a great texture but the batter could have been little crispier for me personally. Nevertheless, that is a minor quibble as the dish was very good.

Before long the table was groaning under the weight of our other choices and it was difficult not to dribble at the wondrous sight before my eyes.

There was a Special Seafood Noodle with large prawns that you could see were fresh and cooked just right; there was a King Prawn Bifengtang that involved prawns with their shell on and set on a bed of breadcrumbs and dried red chilli that, if a chilli caught you right, made your eyes try

to jump out of their sockets. The Ballerina on the other side of the table had an almighty coughing spasm after the tiniest of tastes, but she is a renowned ‘Chilli Wimp’. Even so, we both agreed that it was delicious.

What caught us both by surprise was the simple brilliance of the vegetable side order of Stir Fried Morning Glory, Ginger, and Fermented Bean Curd. The ginger lifted it up from being a normal green vegetable and the dish added something special to all the others, bringing the whole meal together as well as bringing smiles of satisfaction to our faces.

In Super Noodle the food looks fresh and vibrant; each dish has a great combination of colours and all are good on presentation. A good meal here is not going to leave you skint as they are very reasonably priced; the staff are all willing to help with explaining everything on the menu, and it is a great place to step out of your comfort zone to try something different if you feel a bit adventurous.

On our way home we both said that Super Noodle was way above our

expectations in more ways than one, and as it is on the London Marathon route we are thinking about booking a table there so we can watch the fun and make our eyes water with hot chilli dishes all over again.

Southwark News, Thursday April 21, 2016 PART 1 FORM OF STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS II AND III OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981

Power to make general vesting declaration

1.

The London Borough of Southwark hereinafter called the Acquiring Authority may acquire any of the land described in the Schedule hereto by making a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981. This has the effect, subject to paragraph 4 below, of vesting the land in the Acquiring Authority at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below. A declaration may not be made before the end of a period of two months from the first publication of a notice which includes this statement except with the consent in writing of every occupier of the land affected.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration

2.

As soon as may be after the Acquiring Authority make a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in any notice. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a further period begins to run. This period, which must be not less than 28 days, will be specified in the declaration. On the first day after the end of this period (“the vesting date”) the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraph 4, vest in the Acquiring Authority together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom the Acquiring Authority could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

Modifications with respect to certain tenancies

In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, ie a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that the Acquiring Authority may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 3 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than 14 days from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

THE A3 GLA ROAD (BOROUGH HIGH STREET, LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF STOPPING) ORDER 2016 1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under sections 14(1), (5), (7) and 15(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and is satisfied that these works will last in excess of 18 months for the purpose specified in paragraph 2.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable drainage works to be carried out, intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Great Guildford Street, at it’s junction with Union Street (b) Melbourne Grove at it’s junction with Grove Vale (c) Willowbrook Road at it’s junction with Colegrove Road

The alternative route for (a) America Street, Southwark Bridge Road. (b) Lordship Lane, East Dulwich Grove (c) Bird in Bush Road, Glengall Road as applicable.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

Hamlet’s promotion chances from the Ryman Premier Division seemed to be ebbing away since Christmas but their current six game unbeaten run means Dulwich are in pole position to take one of four play off positions.

Only Enfield Town can deny them and they must defeat table toppers Hampton & Richmond Borough this weekend and hope the Pink and Blues fall to defeat against their Suffolk opposition.

If Hamlet draw and Enfield win Dulwich should still prevail as they have a vastly superior goal difference to Town.

Pink and Blues boss Gavin Rose expects a tough game against Needham, who need points themselves to avoid the drop.

The Dulwich manager told the News: “The boys have overcome a lot of obstacles in the last few weeks and they deserve credit for that.

“This Saturday will be another difficult game as Needham Market need to win. We will be going for the win, as we do every game, but if it turns out a draw is enough we will take it.

“We want to go into that semi-final with a win so that is what we will be playing for on Saturday.”

Rose added that for one of the few times this season he has a full squad to pick from this weekend.

DULWICH HAMLET need just one point from this weekend’s game against Needham Market to make the end of season play offs.

FISHER FC will play their final home game at Champion Hill this Saturday and boss Dean Harrison admits he’s glad this is the case.

Whilst the Black and Whites have avoided the drop, impressive for a club with no playing budget and limited revenue streams, their disappointing home form meant a top half finish was always unlikely.

Last weekend the Fish won 2-1 away at Cray Valley thanks to second half goals from Luke Haidarovic and Max Rothwell.

This Saturday will be their final fixture of the season, in addition to their final game at Champion Hill, and Harrison hopes for a turnaround in home form.

He said: “We have had two wins out

of last three and the boys put in a good display of football last weekend.

“The problem seems to be that we just can’t do that at home, all those good results come away from home.

“I think as a club we never really felt at home at Dulwich. It’s their ground and I think our boys don’t feel it is their home and it might come through in performances there.

“But it is our last game there this weekend and we want to end on a high, but we really can’t wait to get to our new ground now.”

Steve Hiser had worries about her fitness.

He told the News: “She only came back in the gym on the Wednesday before the final as she had just recovered from a bout of chicken pox.

“I put her through her paces and as she came through that and we decided to send her to the finals. She boxed brilliantly to win, she gave here opponent a standing count in the bout and was a worthy winner.”

Club mate Charlie Wynn fought three times in a week in order to pick up the under 69kg London Elite belt at the weekend and he now waits to find out if he will be seeded for the regional sections of the competition.

Louie Lynn from Lynn Boxing Club was also crowned London Elite ABA Champion, at under 52kg, over the weekend. A title he has now held for the past two seasons.

PECKHAM BASKETBALL star Shaquille Walters has been named as the Elite Academy Basketball League’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2015/16 season.

The City of London Academy player has dominated his age group, finishing with an average of 14.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. His side finished their campaign with a 12-1 win/loss record this season.

He said: “It really does means a lot to me to receive the Midnight Madness MVP Award for this season.

“The competition this year was fierce and so to know my game has been

Surrey lose season opener

SURREY OPENED their county cricket season with a disappointing three wicket loss against Nottinghamshire last week.

A poor first innings return of 225 at Trent Bridge from the visitors meant Surrey were always on the back foot in the contest.

However a battling second innings century from Surrey opener Arun Harinath went some way to repairing the damage.

MILLWALL PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS – CLASS OF 2016 Millwall Kicks particpants powers through Stoke Kicks midfield.

Jermaine Jenas returns to his roots in Nottingham to see young people competing in the Premier League Kicks Cup.

NOTTINGHAM WAS the venue on Thursday the 7th of April 2016 as 77 teams and over 600 young people from across the nation travelled to Nottingham’s Recreation Ground for a celebration of the work the Premier League Kicks programme carries out in local communities throughout the year.

Millwall selected eight participants who regularly attend the weekly Kicks session which is held at the Lions Centre to represent Millwall at the highly regarded tournament.

The tournament provides the young people with the opportunity to display the wide range of skills and technical ability that they display at the session as well as engage with their peers from cities across the nation.

As well as the many matches that were ongoing throughout the day

participants of the Kicks Cup were able to make the most of on-site workshops. The young people able to take part in a variety of sports such as golf and handball, as well as displaying their skills with a football freestyler who was present on the day.

The Millwall side of 2016 had big boots to fill as the class of 2015 where winners of group B in the 2015 Kicks Cup in Liverpool.

Three of the players from 2015 have had trials with Football League clubs, another has since gone on to make his Football League debut for his club Leyton Orient and another signed a twoand-a-half year deal with a Premier League club at Under-18s level on a full-time basis.

four of their six group games, drawing two, scoring nine goals with only one conceded on the day. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough on the day as Coventry Kicks ran out as group winners, beating Millwall by two points and therefore qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the quarter finals the young men thoroughly enjoyed the chance to represent their local club and to visit another part of the country. Abraham Odoh, who is a regular attendee of the Millwall Kicks programme commented “On the day we were all excited as we just wanted to get on the pitch and show our abilities.

We also got to represent Millwall which was great as it feels like you’re playing for the club”.

Millwall’s Premier League Kicks coordinator Gary Otim spoke highly of the yearly tournament

saying “The Kicks Cup is an event which is eagerly anticipated every year. It provides a great opportunity for our young people to demonstrate their abilities at a big showcase like the Kicks Cup and brings together young people from many different backgrounds, beliefs and areas. We are already looking forward to next years tournament”.

Ex Premier League star Jermaine Jenas made a surprise guest appearance and was in full of praise for the Kicks programme “"It's a brilliant initiative to be associated with," Jenas added.

"The fact that these programmes are set up in all different areas around the country is having a huge impact on behaviour, reducing crime, raising the aspirations of these youngsters and just giving them a place to go”.

Premier League Kicks began

with three pilot projects in 2006 and is one of the Premier League's flagship community programmes which is joint funded by Sport England with the aim of using football to bring communities together and engage with young people. There are now 56 Premier League and Football League clubs delivering the programme across the counry. The success of Kicks is highlighted by the fact the programme has engaged with in excess of 150,000 young people over the last 10 years.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris had no complaints with referee Mark Hayward’s decision to send off Shaun Williams in the first half of the 2-1 defeat to Coventry last weekend.

The Lions were 1-0 up through Byron Webster’s header from Shane Ferguson’s corner when Williams and Sky Blues midfielder Ruben Lameiras clashed in midfield.

Hayward had already whistled for a freekick to Millwall before Williams appeared to aim a kick at Lameiras. The Coventry player got to his feet to confront his opponent, and then collapsed after Williams headbutted him.

Hayward immediately produced a red card, the turning point in a contest in which Millwall had looked comfortable and capable of extending their lead.

After Williams’ dismissal Harris and his assistant Dave Livermore consulted for several minutes, before they introduced Jimmy Abdou for Ferguson, initially switching to a 4-3-2 formation.

Millwall’s management changed to 4-41 at half-time as they attempted to combat Coventry’s threat on the flanks.

Tony Monbray’s side had dropped out of play-off contention after a run of just two wins in sixteen before Saturday’s fixture, but they were emboldened by their numerical supremacy as they sought to break down their resolute opponents.

Harris felt Millwall were relatively comfortable keeping Coventry at bay as the home side tried to end a sequence of three games with a goal, and five without a win.

But, with Joe Cole pulling the strings in midfield for Coventry, they eventually found a way to beat Jordan Archer when John Fleck found space 30 yards out to unleash a ferocious effort that found the top corner.

Mowbray had already introduced striker Marcus Tudgay for defender Sam Ricketts as they went all-out attack, and the move paid off nine minutes after Fleck’s goal when Tudgay scurried into the box to slide the ball under Archer for the winner.

JOE MARTIN has already been part of a squad at Wembley in front of more than 82,000 supporters – but this season his aim is to experience it from the pitch.

Twenty-seven-year-old defender Martin spent two seasons at Blackpool after leaving Tottenham, and featured in five league games in 2009-10 as the Seasiders won promotion to the Premier League under Ian Holloway after winning the Championship playoff final.

A week later at Wembley, Paul Robinson scored a 39th-minute winner against Swindon to send 40,000 Millwall fans into ecstasy as they celebrated promotion to the Championship after a four-year absence.

The Lions are currently in a good position to make the play-offs as a season that was meant to be primarily about transition builds to a dramatic

finale.

With three games to go Millwall are right in the mix but, unlike Blackpool, who had been expected to battle against relegation that season rather than for promotion, Neil Harris’ side will be the one others want to take down in the battle for the Championship.

Goals from Charlie Adam, Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Brett Ormerod put the Seasiders 3-2 up against Cardiff in the first half of that frenetic Championship play-off decider, and they held on as Holloway became just the second manager to guide the club into the top flight in his first full season in charge.

“It was massive, but we were underdogs at the time,” Martin said.

“We had snuck into the play-offs so it was a slightly different scenario.

“It was a crazy game and great day. It was surreal being at Wembley on such a big occasion. Hopefully I can experience it again but be involved this time.

“I think with Millwall, we’re one of the bigger clubs in the league so we feel

like we should be in there. Hopefully we can get over the line and concentrate on the play-offs.”

One potential obstacle for Martin before he can realise that Wembley dream is the return of club captain Tony Craig, who can operate at left-back.

But Martin is pleased to have his team-mate back. Craig has the experience of playing in the League One play-off final in 2010 and that could be crucial if Millwall find themselves back there this season on May 29.

“He’s been there and done it, he’s been at Millwall a long time and knows what it’s all about,” Martin said. “It’s good to have people like Tone about.

It’s good for the younger boys who haven’t been in this situation before to have an experienced voice in the dressing room. We have a good few players who’ve been there and done it before.”

Martin, who signed a one-year deal when he joined Millwall last summer but is hoping to extend his stay, attracted the anger of some Gillingham fans earlier in the season when he said

the Lions’ squad was better equipped for a promotion challenge than his former club’s.

That was at a point when Millwall still hadn’t reached the top six, but even Martin said he had underestimated the size of the club.

“It’s bigger than I thought it was,” Martin admitted. “The gaffer told me before I signed that it was a unique club. I’ve loved every minute being here and hopefully we can end the season successfully.

“I’d love to stay longer but obviously that’s up to the gaffer. I feel like I’ve fitted in quite well.”

A year ago, Gillingham had little to play for as they tailed off in the playoff race. But Martin wouldn’t swap his current situation for a more relaxed end to the season.

“It’s completely different this campaign, every game is vital, every point is potentially a big point,” Martin said.

“There will be ups and downs, even with just a few games left, but hopefully we can finish the job.”

It was only last week, after the return of Tony Craig to the first-team squad, that Neil Harris admitted Millwall have been fortunate with the relative lack of injuries that have affected them this season.

But Millwall know Lee Gregory and Steve Morison have been pushing the physical boundaries this season, and that finally caught up with them on Tuesday night.

Top scorer Gregory didn’t reappear after the break against a Fleetwood side that continue to put in performances that make their league position look like a puzzle.

Millwall, in Harris’ words, had “huffed and puffed” but hadn’t produced anything of quality until the 52nd minute. Morison is a “machine”, according to his boss, but it was the touch of an artist that finally broke down Fleetwood.

Gregory’s replacement Jamie Philpot showed awareness to nod the ball towards Morison in the box and the Lions captain produced a superb lob with his left foot to beat Chris Maxwell. Harris called it Millwall’s goal of the season.

But Morison lasted just eighteen more minutes before going off with a hamstring strain. Harris’ side would be an entirely different prospect without their heavy-duty twin assault weapons, so key are they to carrying out the tactical plans.

Morison and Gregory are the blunt forces used to heave open the barriers of the opposition defence but the wear and tear of the season is now obvious.

Harris admitted after this win over Steven Pressley’s Cod Army that they have been “patching” Gregory up after recent games. They had hoped to get him through the handful of fixtures left but knew that by playing him this was always the risk.

It was a similar strategy with Morison, who has been playing with that hamstring problem.

With Shane Ferguson unavailable after injuring his thigh against Coventry it meant Millwall were looking threadbare as they battled for three crucial points.

Between the 70th minute, when Fred Onyedinma came on for Morison, and the 88th minute, when Ed Upson replaced the tiring Aiden O’Brien, six of Millwall’s players on the pitch were aged 23 or under.

Harris said they would grow as characters after this experience. It was grit and determination that saw them through, as illustrated by Ben Thompson thundering into a

challenge on the much bigger Eggert Jonsson as both sides matched each other’s physicality.

Millwall will certainly hope every cloud has a silver lining for the rest of the season. That was immediately provided by Philpot but there now must be concern at the nature of the injury Gregory is carrying.

Philpot is highly rated by Millwall’s staff, and his header for Morison’s goal was clever and a moment of quality in a game that had been lacking in it up to that point.

Morison’s finish was also perfectly judged.

This was a performance, after a poor first half, in which it was the

Archer had given Millwall fans a fright with the clock grinding towards 90 minutes when he dropped a cross, but as Antoni Sarcevic attempted to profit the goalkeeper pounced the gather the ball. Archer saved arguably his most important

contribution of the season so far for the 94th minute. There was mayhem in the Millwall box as Fleetwood poured forward, and Burns seemed certain to break home hearts only for Archer to somehow keep his concentration to produce an outstanding double save.

Maybe the constant tension surrounding games in the promotion run-in is taking a mental as well as physical toll. Millwall’s attack just didn’t function in the first half.

Passes went astray or were misread, and players just didn’t seem totally in tune with what was going on around them. And the home crowd let them know they weren’t happy with the disharmony on the pitch.

A couple of times Jimmy Abdou and Thompson were caught in possession, O’Brien and Morison weren’t on each other’s radar and when Thompson won the ball late in the first half Morison was coming back from an offside position as a pass in his direction rolled out of play.

It all added up to frustration and an increasingly edgy atmosphere.

Fleetwood, as at Highbury Stadium in November, didn’t look like a side struggling at the wrong end of the table. They were compact and then fluent when they had the chance to break, and Pressley was convinced they should have had a penalty when Jimmy Ryan went down under a challenge from Beevers in added time at the end of the first half. The rashness of the tackle perhaps summed up the edginess in the Millwall side in the opening 45 minutes.

Earlier, Gregory had Millwall’s first half-chance when he turned in the box but shot over Maxwell’s crossbar.

O’Brien then headed Romeo’s cross wide after the defender had linked up well with Chris Taylor on the right.

But the best chance of the first half fell to Fleetwood. Lone striker Burns was only denied the opening goal by the width of the crossbar after Sarcevic had broken into the box and the ball dropped to the attacker, who was leaning back as he made contact.

Harris brought on Philpot for Gregory at half-time and just seven minutes later Philpot flicked a header towards Morison and the captain lifted a delicate effort over Maxwell from inside the box.

Moments later Archer had to spring to his right to save after Bobby Grant had found space to shoot.

Fleetwood continued to press as Harris introduced Ed Upson for O’Brien to give the midfield more defensive security. And the home side almost blew it, only for Archer to intervene.

The result moved Millwall up to fourth place, but there are just three points between them and Barnsley in seventh.

Three points could prove invaluable, but it remains to be seen at what cost they were won.

Millwall target Nadesan bides his time

MILLWALL WILL have to wait until the middle of May before indemand Ashley Nadesan makes a decision on his future.

Nadesan was on trial with the Lions last week and scored in the U21s’ 4-2 league win over Barnsley.

He played for his club Horley Town a few days later and scored four goals in an 8-1 win over Chessington &

Hook United in their Combined Counties League Premier Division clash. He has scored almost 100 goals in the last two seasons.

Twenty-one-year-old Nadesan has been on trial at Premier League Bournemouth this week.

Millwall boss Neil Harris is an admirer of the striker, who already has an offer on the table from an unnamed League Two club.

One potential sticking point over a move to Millwall is that the club see

him initially as an U21 player.

His agent, Darren Lewis, is also keen that his client sign a two-yeardeal, but Millwall may only be willing to offer him a one-year contract.

Nadesan works in McDonald’s in Redhill, where he was recently promoted. The opportunity for career development there, and the risk of leaving secure employment for a shot at professional football, are also factors in any decision.

Lewis told the News: “There are a lot of things to consider before a choice is made. He has an offer from a League Two club where he could wear the number ten jersey next season.

“I’m not sure going to play for an U21 side would be the best move for him at this stage in his career. He has already scored a lot of goals in senior football.

“It’s also risky for him to go somewhere on a one-year deal. If it

didn’t work out there is no way he would be able to just go back to where he left off in his current employment where he has been doing really well and there is a clear career progression path.

“But I would expect we’ll make a decision in May.”
