JAMAICA ROAD will see twenty closures over a month for resurfacing work at some point next year, it has been revealed.

The news comes after two weeks

LET’S PLAY A GAME OF SNARL UP!

I

F YOU were trying to push motorists who use Jamaica Road over the edge, just for a laugh, you might first decide to stick in a bus lane that immediately caused daily snarlups. You’d then refuse to countenance opening the bus lane up to normal traffic during peak periods.

Next you might close all eastbound traffic from Tooley Street, but then, in a moment of twisted genius, cut off the alternative route across Tower Bridge by closing that for refurbishment.

With Rotherhithe Tunnel having to close due to various incidents, tailbacks could be seen stretching for miles down Lower and Jamaica Roads - woe betide anyone trying to get across the river any time after midafternoon.

Yet in a final flourish, (or perhaps not?), it has now been announced that Jamaica Road will be closed some twenty times next year for resurfacing - it truly sounds like a board game called Snarl Up! being played with a roll of the dice by TfL bosses.

We say announced, but in fact it was Southwark Lib Dems who chanced upon the resurfacing plans, so you have to wonder when or how dispirited commuters and local businesses were going to find out.

Of course it is no laughing matter the amount of disruption to people’s lives and their livelihoods from this cavalcade of traffic-jam inducing measures is appalling.

Given that Jamaica Road has long held the dubious distinction of being the slowest in rush hour in the country, you have to wonder what has prompted the need to resurface - weeds growing between the car tyres perhaps?

Schemes need funds T SEEMS strange that Guy’s and St Thomas’ were chosen to pilot a groundbreaking scheme to deliver care locally, but have now found themselves shortchanged over the costs of implementing it.

The hospital’s management confirmed to us this week that a request for £11.2m of funding for the ‘vanguard’ project had led to just £2.5m being received - with similar shortages affecting hospital partnerships across England.

The scheme allows care specialists and consultants to treat patients further afield, saving them the trouble of travelling to central London, which makes perfect sense.

But you have to wonder how the figure the trust arrived it is so far off the amount of funding given to them by NHS England.

Innovative schemes to improve access to services and the patient experience are always welcomed - but as we have seen with the anger over seven day NHS plans, if they don’t come with the requisite amount of funding, then they’re not so much schemes as wishful thinking.

British Library puts on exhibition of 6,000 items kept by illusionist in Kennington

A VICTORIAN hoarder’s collection, which contains a staggering six thousand items of printed materials - from ticket stubs to bread adverts - is on show at the British Library now.

There Will Be Fun is an exhibition based on the accumulated pile of nineteenth century materials collected by Kennington-born conjurer, illusionist and ventriloquist Henry Evans - known as Evanion.

Featuring materials from 1860-1895, the exhibition focuses on five pioneering performers of the time – big stage magician John Nevil Maskelyne; George Sanger, a circus performer who

worked with animals ; hypnotist Annie De Montford, one of the first women to be a leading performer; Dan Leno, who inspired the pantomime dame; and Evanion himself.

“What people will see here they’ll never have seen before,” said exhibition curator, Helen Peden. “These items don’t stand the test of time.”

Highlights of the exhibition include original posters and tickets, sound recordings and original magical artefacts, on loan from the Magic Circle Museum. The displays also reflect the revolutionary progress seen in colour printing at the end of the nineteenth century.

The British Library first got its hands on the Evanion Collection in 1895, when the performer’s failing health stopped

him from working. He sold it for twenty shillings. “He knew that the items were the one thing he could make money from,” said Helen.

Evanion’s career as a conjuror spanned half a decade, during which time he performed for audiences from workhouse inmates to the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Whereas Evanion’s link to

entertainment-related memorabilia is clear, the link to the general materials he collected is less obvious. “I believe that he was a man who simply loved print,” said Helen. Evanion, according to Helen, was a man who who bore the gift of ‘natural humour’ and tended to ‘turn triumph into adversity’.

“Once, he had a gun on stage and forgot to put the safety on,” she said. “He handed it to someone in the audience who accidentally fired it – and he got shot in the hand” A few weeks later, he fell over in a tube carriage – and landed on the hand he’d just been shot in.”

“He had his misfortunes but would always troop on.”

There Will Be Fun is at the British Library until March 12, 2017.

Expert review found ‘no systematic failing’ at King’s over five deaths www.southwarknews.co.uk/news

KING’S COLLEGE Hospital has confirmed that a panel of external experts found “no systematic failings” with its maternity services, after the deaths of five women postchildbirth.

Clinicians from St George’s Hospital in Tooting were called-in by King’s senior management after a coroner found that “neglect” contributed to the death of Abimbola Babatola, 39, at King’s on July 31 last year.

Ms Babatola was one of four women who died between July and December in 2015, having been transferred to King’s specialist wards from other hospitals due to complications weeks after birth. The children of all four late mothers survived.

A fifth woman, Gillian Nelson, 34, from Sydenham, died in February 2014 after giving birth at Princess

Royal Hospital in Farnborough – managed by King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCHT).

The external inquiry commissioned

by King’s was also called for, following concerns raised by the NHS inspector, the Care Quality Commission.

The watchdog published a report in September 2015 citing concerns from King’s midwives feeling “under stress” with shortages of consultants and clinicians at peak times.

Following the review by St George’s Hospital clinicians, a spokesperson for KCHT said: “King's College Hospital is a referral unit for women with complex medical problems that

either develop during pregnancy or are pre-existing and deteriorate during pregnancy or after birth.

“Two of the women who died gave birth at other hospitals. They were transferred to King’s when they developed complications and required specialist input from other medical departments.

“All the deaths were reviewed by a panel of clinicians, including specialists from other hospitals. For extra assurance, we asked for a review of the cases from another external specialist team.

“This was to compare the cases to ensure there were no systemic failings that were being overlooked. The report from this review has now been received and has concluded that there are no concerns about common themes or systemic failings.”

A St George’s Hospital spokesperson said: “We can confirm that St George’s clinicians were asked to carry out a review of the cases in question, and we have since shared our findings with King’s.”

Police officer murder: trial at Old Bailey

A JURY was sworn in at the Old Bailey this week for the trial of a Borough web developer, accused of killing and dismembering a policeman.

Stefano Brizzi, 49, allegedly murdered PC Gordon Semple at his flat off Southwark Street between April 1 and 7 after arranging a meeting on a gay dating website.

The 59-year-old officer's remains were found after police were alerted to a 'smell of death' coming from the Peabody Trust Estate on April 7.

A jury of eight men and four women were sworn in for the trial, and seven reserve jurors were also called.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard, the Recorder of London, told them: “This is a case of murder, it's an important case from everybody's point of view.”

likely be concluded by November 11 at the very latest.

PC Semple, originally from Inverness, Scotland, was last seen leaving London's Shard at 12.30pm on April 1 after an onduty meeting at the five-star Shangri-La hotel.

The officer, who lived with partner Gary Meeks, in Greenhithe, Kent, was attached to a Westminster Council anti-social behaviour unit.

Borough High Street shut down over rogue vehicle

BOROUGH HIGH Street was shut by police on during rush hour on Tuesday morning as they investigated a “suspicious” and “unattended” vehicle.

Offices were evacuated between Southwark Street and Marshalsea Road as commuters saw emergency services rush to the scene.

One worker, Glenn Southam, said on social media: “Evacuated from office due to security threat on Borough High

Volunteers heap praise on Bermondsey woman who plans to retire after 40 years of putting on Christmas Day dinner for OAPs

THE MASTERMIND behind Bermondsey’s Pensioners’ Christmas Day Dinner “deserves an MBE” for all her work say her friends, as she prepares to retire from the annual bash.

Coral Newell of the Beormund Community Centre has been in charge of the free festive meal which feeds 150 lonely pensioners on December 25 each year - for the last 40 years, but after the birth of her first greatgrandchild wants to spend the day at home.

The search is now on to find a suitable replacement, with the News reporting last week how this year’s meal will be her last in charge.

Bas Andrews, who runs a Thursday social club in the Beormund Centre and helps out with the Christmas meal, said the parties were always an exciting event for the pensioners: “She [Coral] should have an MBE. She’s never been short of volunteers. If they weren’t about they would all have a Christmas where they [the pensioners] are put to sleep.

“It’s good to crank up the music and get everyone dancing. The thing about Coral is she knows everyone and she gets things done. She has organised so much.

Every Christmas is a new memory we treasure because each year we are one year older.

“We don’t think she can give it up.”

The event has taken place every year since 1977 in the Robens Suite on the 29th floor of Guy’s Hospital Tower, where pensioners are treated to a seasonal soup, a traditional

BERMONDSEY: Southwark Council is still procuring for a development partner for the current Cherry Garden School site, for building work once it has moved.

The current location has been “earmarked for development of new council homes” and final proposals are yet to be finalised. More than 50 per cent of the children at Cherry Garden School have “profound and multiple learning disabilities”, and the current site was deemed “unsatisfactory” by Ofsted in 2001. In 2018 the school will move to a new appropriate site on Bellenden Road.

Consultation with residents will resume on the new council homes once a development partner is found.

BERMONDSEY’S infamously congested Jamaica Road will see twenty closures for resurfacing at some point next year, the News can reveal.

While an exact date has not been given, Transport for London has assured the works will not happen at the same time as the Tower Bridge closure – which has caused further tailbacks along the road and will last until December 31.

News of the resurfacing works, which will likely last a month, was revealed by TfL to Southwark Liberal Democrat Leader, councillor Anood Al-Samerai.

“In the long running battles with TfL about traffic chaos, Liberal Democrat councillors have learned that Jamaica Road is due to be resurfaced as part of their cycle super highway works,” she said.

“We are alarmed that this may involve even more disruption in the area.”

While a date for the work is unclear, it comes as heavy congestion continues due to the eastbound closure of Tooley Street for work on London Bridge Station and Tower Bridge’s three month closure for vital refurbishment.

Last week the News reported how TfL was not going to open the eastbound bus lane on Jamaica Road to traffic, despite a petition being

signed by more than five hundred people.

Tower Bridge is also to close to pedestrians on the weekends of November 26-27, December 3-4 and December 10-11, between 8am – 10pm.

Throughout the closure a signed diversion is in place taking drivers northbound over London Bridge and southbound over Southwark Bridge.

Three London Bus routes that use Tower Bridge (42, 78 and RV1) are affected and TfL has put in a range of measures to help minimise disruption, including: • A free ferry service on the weekends that it’s closed to pedestrians, to help people cross the river • Drivers will not incur the Congestion Charge on the signed diversion routes • And all road works apart from emergency ones will be banned in the area throughout the closure

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has waited over a year to be “asked” by the government to take in unaccompanied child refugees, its leader Peter John has said.

This week the Home Office began transporting groups of refugee children to its Croydon offices, before French authorities prepare to tear down the Calais migrant ‘Jungle’ camp.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd recently told the Commons more than 80 unaccompanied children had been accepted for transfer to the UK so far this year. She added that more than 50 children had been taken, many of them from Greece.

The News has been contacted by Southwark Liberal Democrat leader, councillor Anood Al-Samerai, to criticise Southwark, suggesting it has no plans for how many child refugees it will commit to taking.

“We have heard loads of warm words but no so much action, and no detail,” she said.

“Peter John’s original quote was to take in 50 children. We wrote a letter to Southwark asking them to say what they are planning to do, and after chasing them up we’ve not had any information about what they’re doing.”

But council leader Peter John has responded, suggesting the buck stops with the government, and that Southwark is “in their hands”.

“It’s a complex process and councils are heavily involved in helping those children, carrying out checks to ensure they can settle here safely and setting up temporary foster placements if necessary. We will continue to do all that is asked of us, whilst balancing this with the ongoing

needs of our existing residents at a time of huge financial pressure.”

The Home office declared on April 21 that it hoped to admit several hundred individuals over the next year, with a commitment to resettling up to 3,000 by 2020.

More than 40 UK councils, including Southwark, have offered to provide housing for the unaccompanied children.

The Brigade’s data shows that 98 serious fires have been caused in the borough since 2011 by dodgy appliances like washers, driers, fridges and freezers.

The cost of the damage to the tax payer for Southwark’s fires alone came to a total of almost £5.6m, for the five years, and the borough was worse off only compared with Barnet and Croydon.

Chiefs at the LFB published the figures as part of its ‘Total Recalls’ campaign, which aims to ensure the public are better protected from faulty white goods that can prove “potentially lethal”.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: “There is a serious lack of awareness about the potential dangers posed by faulty white goods and manufacturers are lagging far behind when it comes to prioritising fire resistance in their designs.

“We want politicians and members of the public to share our campaign to make people better informed about the dangers white goods can pose in their homes.”

The LFB wrote to Southwark’s three MPs asking them to endorse its campaign. It has so far been taken up by Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter, who has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament.

Highest-ranking Wing Tsun martial artist in UK holding seminar for women in borough

The UK’s top female fighter in the martial art of Wing Tsun is asking women and girls join her in a self-defence seminar - so they can stay safe on the borough’s streets.

The highest ranking female in her field, Della O’Sullivan, from Peckham, will be ‘bringing women together’ in the seminar on October 29. Della, who has charged to a Grade 4 ranking during her ten years of training, has long-dreamed of empowering women and girls with the tools they need to stay safe.

“I’ve done workshops before,” she said. “I’ve gone into law and corporate firms and delivered sessions. This is different though, this is personal.”

The catalyst for Della was an increase in violence against women in news reports. “There have been a lot of attacks over time,” she said. “If I can make a difference to help someone, then I will.”

Unique to Della’s seminar are tailored protection tips for young girls and she urged mums to bring their daughters along.

Della is adamant that self-defence skills are vital in today’s world, after seeing a fair share of altercations on

the street in Peckham.

“You see a fight or argument on the street – people don’t get involved,” she said.

“You can’t depend on people to help you – these are the times that we live in. Self-defence skills are vital” Della’s own move into Wing Tsun came about after she became a single mother a decade ago.

“I needed something to lift my confidence, a new hobby,” she told the News. “I never thought I’d fall in love with it.”

“I used to have a stalker, too,” she added. “I needed to learn how to protect myself.”

At just 5” tall, Della is living proof that a small stature needn’t render someone

vulnerable.

“Wing Tsun is about speed, grace and finesse,” she said. “Bulk can

hold you back.”

Della is donating all proceeds from the event to BEDE, a local charity supporting women and children who have experienced domestic violence.

“The likelihood is that you’ll never need it,” she said. “But the moment you do - you’ll need it more than you’ve ever needed.”

Bermondsey residents hand in their own planning policies BERMONDSEY

A BERMONDSEY residents’ group has submitted its own planning policies to the council to ‘preserve the heritage and character of the area’.

The Old Bermondsey Village Neighbourhood Forum’s (OBVNG) document is the result of the 2010 Localism Bill, where local authorities were asked to work with community groups to explore principles of neighbourhood planning.

The policies proposed by the OBVNG will be subject to a review and local referendum before being adopted by the council, with the areas involved including Bermondsey Street, its surrounding area dubbed Bermondsey Village, and the area south of Long Lane and north of Great Dover Street.

Russell Gray, the coordinator of the group, said the plan was important in order to preserve the character and heritage of the area.

He said: “It’s been going on for a long time and we’re just now getting to the point that we are ready to submit the first draft.

Surrey Square has a magic time

PUPILS AT a Walworth junior school hosted a Magic Breakfast banquet for trustees of the People’s Post Code Lottery, the charity which funds free school breakfast programmes across the UK.

Surrey Square was chosen to host the Magic Breakfast event, after it was announced that the charity had awarded a total of £550,000 to the national Magic Breakfast Programme since 2014.

The event also came as Magic Breakfast released results of its annual survey of partner schools on the positive impact that breakfast provision is having on pupils’ learning.

It showed that 87.7 per cent of 404 schools reporting that their Magic Breakfast provision had led to improved educational attainment levels among pupils, while 96.5 per cent of responding schools said their breakfast provision has led to improved concentration levels.

Former teacher becomes first London laureate

A PECKHAM man has been named as London’s first Young Person’s Laureate, and will be spearheading a year-long campaign to raise the profile of poetry among youngsters.

Caleb Femi, a former secondary school teacher, was selected for the role by a prestigious panel, including

The Roundhouse and the Poetry Society.

The 26-year-old will be leading a range of development initiatives, including Poetry Lab writing workshops and collaborating with established youth platforms to find ways to engage youngsters in the form.

“It felt great to be appointed into the role,” Caleb told the News. “It’s a bit daunting because it’s so huge but it’s so exciting, too.”

The Laureate scheme, led by writer development agency Spread the Word, aims to give London’s young people a voice through poetry.

“When you’re young, everything is complicated,” said Caleb. “You’re trying to find your way with lots of new things – politics, sexuality, for example.”

“Poetry allows for a conversation with not just yourself but with other young people, too.”

During his tenure, Caleb will challenge traditional notions of poetry as being a difficult to understand written form. “I want to help young people see poetry outside the academic,” he said. “In schools, it’s always written down. But it can also be spoken and listened to, too.”

Caleb believes that poetry can reach people of any background. “I’ll be working to make poetry accessible to all demographics,” he said.

THE MILLWALL Community Trust (MCT) has been awarded the contract to manage Fisher FC’s St Paul’s ground after a lengthy tender process.

The announcement was welcomed by Fisher, who have been in close talks with MCT over their bid to protect Fisher’s future.

Their return to Bermondsey follows a “frustrating summer” awaiting Southwark Council’s decision on the tender, and a twelve year stint sharing Dulwich Hamlet FC’s Champion Hill ground.

Dan Feeney, Interim Co-Chairman of Fisher FC, said: “Having shown such support in bringing Fisher back home to the local area we are delighted that the Council have further expressed their commitment to football as a force for community enrichment.

“We look forward to developing the natural synergies with Millwall Community Trust to ensure that Fisher FC and St Paul's Stadium become the true community assets which we have

always worked towards.”

The recently completed ground in Salter Road was built by the council and underwent a £1m investment programme since planning permission was agreed in 2014.

The project was funded through the council’s Section 106 planning agreements with Fairview Homes, as well Southwark Council’s Legacy Fund.

Councillor Maisie Anderson, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Parks and Leisure, said: “We have been pushing to bring local football club Fisher FC back to Bermondsey from the very beginning, and have worked extremely hard to deliver it.

“While the last stage of awarding a management contract that provides good value for the community has not been as quick as we hoped, it is fantastic to reach this point today.

“The new ground will be a place not only for the team, but the whole community.”

Fisher’s match against Deal Town on Saturday will be a community day, where fans can bring a friend for £3.

Collections will also be made for Southwark Foodbank.

Stand to be named after Barry Albin-Dyer community.

A STAND at Fisher FC’s St Paul’s ground will be named after Bermondsey’s Barry Albin-Dyer, as a commemoration of his life by Southwark Council.

Barry was the funeral director of F. A. Albin & Sons and passed away last year, after a life spent comforting families across Southwark and carrying out charitable work.

The family of Barry Albin-Dyer said: “We are grateful to the officials of Southwark Council and the members of Fisher Athletic for the honour of naming this new stand after our father.

“Dad was a supporter of Fisher FC and later joined the board and helped the club progress and enjoyed some good times with them.

“We see this as a fitting tribute to a man who did so much for the club and his local community.”

A plaque unveiling for the new Barry Albin-Dyer Stand is planned to take place later this year.

‘INSPIRATION’ WAS Levi Root’s theme as he spoke to Charles Dickens Primary pupils as part of a Black History Month event this week.

The sauce entrepreneur appeared at the Borough school on October 18 alongside Illuminating Arts, an organisation which highlights aspects of history through art.

“I’ll be talking to the kids about food and the Caribbean lifestyle,” said Levi, who is famous for his Reggae Reggae Sauce, before the event. “Dinnertime was the most important time in my home when I was young. Cooking and seeing what goes into food – that was just as important as eating.

“I want to educate kids on the importance of food and cooking.”

The event was organised by parent Chrystal Genesis, after she realised there was nothing specific in the school’s programme for Black History Month.

“Levi is very inspirational and he can talk to the kids about food, business, cooking,” said Chrystal.

“It’d be great if we could do things like this all year round.”

Illuminating Arts brought highlights of their Hair Looms exhibition to the school, which explores the heritage, history and traditions of African hairstyles. The exhibition is based at Melange Salon in Peckham for two

weeks.

“The project is educational and aims to pick up on specialist needs and traditions of African hair and skin,” said Illuminating Arts Director Melissa Jo Smith, “For example, kids with cornrows being

sent home from school when actually, this is part of their tradition.”

“This event is very exciting,” said parent governor Annastazia Nyaga, “It’s important for children to learn about African history, which they

wouldn’t learn about in everyday assemblies.

“Having Levi here is an entrepreneur is also great – more kids needs to be encouraged to do their own thing instead of going straight into the 9-5.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ face £8.7m shortfall in Kent treatment scheme Trust requested £11.2m but received £2.5m for ‘vanguard’ project EXCLUSIVE

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ faces an £8.7m shortfall to fund a groundbreaking ‘vanguard’ programme that saw it deliver care locally to patients in Kent.

The hospital’s management has confirmed it received £2.5m of funding for the 2016/2017 financial year, but had requested £11.2m.

The News reported in August that (GSTT) Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust’s vanguard programme with Dartford and

Grvesham NHS Trust had become the template for similar set ups to commence between different hospitals across the country.

But it was recently revealed by the Health Service Journal that similar funding shortages from NHS England had affected similar hospital partnerships in England, to the total sum £216m.

The vanguard system, and the additional funding it received until recently from NHS England, allowed care specialists and consultants to treat patients further afield, saving them the trouble of travelling to central London.

A GSTT spokesperson previously said clinicians across

vascular, cardiology and children’s services were being brought in locally.

“For example,” the Trust said, “Dartford and Gravesham is working with Evelina London Children’s Hospital – part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ – to bring specialist care closer to home for families.”

Despite the budget cut, GSTT said it will guarantee cardiovascular and children's services still being provided through the vanguard programme for Kent outpatients.

A GSTT spokesperson told the News: "Like a number of Trusts, we received less money for our Vanguard with Dartford and

Gravesham NHS Trust than originally bid for. We are therefore reviewing our priorities but remain committed to delivering benefits for patients, initially focusing on cardiovascular and children's services."

Defending the reductions in funding, an NHS Spokesperson said: “Vanguards’ value propositions have been assessed through a rigorous review process that included vanguards, clinicians, patient representatives and members of the arms-length bodies leading the NHS Five Year Forward View.

“As a result we are backing the strongest vanguards in 2016-17, in line with the value methodology.”

Council leader John gets new London Brexit role

SOUTHWARK: The leader of Southwark Council, Peter John OBE, has been given a new role to represent London councils on matters relating to Brexit.

London Councils – a cross-party group which represents the capital’s 32 borough authorities – has appointed cllr John as its elected deputy chair, and as its executive member for business, skills and Brexit.

The Southwark leader said: “I’m delighted that I’ve been reappointed as a London Councils executive member, and with a brief that couldn’t be more timely nor important.

“In Southwark, one of our top priorities is helping residents build the skills they need to get the jobs they want, and there is a huge amount we can do across London to ensure local people benefit from the growth and regeneration going on around them.

“And of course Brexit is of huge concern to many in London, not least in Southwark where a large majority of residents voted to remain. I’m determined to work with councils across London, and the Mayor, to limit any negative impact of the Brexit plans, and to show that London is very much open for business.”

Cllr John had previously been London Councils’ member for Children, Skills and Employment.

BERMONDSEY: Police were called after a van collided with a cyclist on Tower Bridge Road on Monday morning.

A spokesperson said there were no serious injuries, no arrests and that enquiries continue.

Fundraisers smash target

TWO MACMILLAN fundraisers smashed their targets, bringing in in excess of £2,100 for the cancer charity.

The Good Intent Pub on Walworth Road and Magdalen Tenants Hall in Bermondsey raised £1, 100 and £1, 050 respectively.

“We’re just overwhelmed,” said Susan Jefferies, chair of Magdalen’s resident committee, who managed to quadruple last year’s achievements.

“We did a MacMillan fundraiser last year and managed £250. We wanted to do better this year.”

The organisers raised the amount through a combination of auctions, raffles and cake sales on October 8.

Magdalen residents were joined by local Liberal Democrats councillor Damien O’Brien and ex-MP Simon Hughes, who judged their cake sale.

“To raise this amount of money is just amazing,” said Susan. “We’re just overwhelmed.”

The committee at Magdalen want to thank Manzie’s pie and mash shop, Donovans Brewery Co-op and Holy, Lil & Delzi’s for their donations to the event.

Meanwhile, The Good Intent hosted an all-day event of raffles, bingo and live music on September 30, for their third MacMillan Fundraiser.

LOCAL HOUSING campaigners are crowdfunding for a barrister to represent Aylesbury Estate leaseholders who could be forced out of their homes.

Southwark Council last week batted away criticisms of its decision to pursue a judicial review of the government’s decision to block its CPO (compulsory purchase order) of eight leaseholders’ flats.

The eight leaseholders had been offered prices of below £300,000 for their flats, which the government said would contravene their human rights by forcing them to leave the area.

But the council has said they are being given market value, and offering them more would be a poor use of taxpayers’ money, and would require money from its budget for council estate maintenance.

This week, the 35% Campaign launched a GoFundMe crowdfunding page for people to raise money for leaseholders’ legal representation during the judicial review.

Jerry Flynn of the campaign, and a previous Heygate Estate resident, told the News: “Southwark have made a bad choice challenging the CPO decision. They should accept it, start treating the leaseholders properly and give them fair compensation.

“We are supporting the leaseholders because like tenants and everyone else on the estate, they are being treated badly. They are being pushed off the estate and their homes demolished to make way for new homes most simply cannot afford.

Last week Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Mark Williams, said the council would spend £50,000 on legal fees to fight its case in the judicial review, which may not be decided until April. He clarified that the CPO was its preferred option for emptying the western section of the Aylesbury, before handing it over to Notting Hill Housing Association for demolition by 2018, rather than negotiate with leaseholders on the value of their flats.

The council has said it has also made other options available to the leaseholders. They include: the opportunity to become Notting Hill tenants in flats built nearby; to trade the value of their flat for an equity share in a new flat, while paying service charges; to entering a ‘nonbinding arbitration process’ over property price disputes; to go to a Lands Tribunal.

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: Refurbishment to the Michael Faraday Memorial, a metal-clad box-shaped monument on the roundabout, will be completed “within two weeks,” TfL has confirmed.

TfL is to re-paint the memorial, after complaints from local residents about its ‘shabby’ appearance. The Grade II listed building honours the Newington Butts scientist, most famous for his discovery of electromagnetic induction in 1831.

The monument comes under the jurisdiction of TfL because an electrical substation for the Northern and Bakerloo Lines is encased within it.

Campaigner Richard Reynolds said: “It’s excellent that they’re giving it a lick of paint but this is just a slither of the bigger issue. There’s more to be done.”

THE OWNER of the Elephant and Castle bingo hall has said he is ‘going nowhere’ after the shopping centre’s owners confirmed demolition work was scheduled to start in 2018.

Patrick Duffey, managing director of Palatial Leisure Ltd – which runs the bowling alley and bingo hall on the top floor – told the News his lease with landlord Delancey will not run out for eight and a half years, in 2025.

“I have been hearing suggestions from the council, from Delancey and from the media for the last seventeen years that we’re about to be demolished any day now,” Patrick said.

“They all say in a year or two it will be demolished. They all say planning will be going in soon. When asked for the plans, there are no plans.”

The News reported last week that the Coronet Theatre in New Kent Road had been given a year’s extension to its lease.

In that story, a Delancey spokesperson said the company is “on track as per the planning timetable” and that it intends to submit a planning application “shortly”.

Delancey added: “We anticipate that we will start demolition and construction in 2018 as stated at our Public Exhibition earlier this year.”

However the News understands there are several businesses in the shopping centre with “long leases” that could pose a problem for Delancey if it hopes to demolish the site within its schedule.

A spokesperson from Delancey said: “We are committed to ensuring that Elephant and Castle remains a vibrant and busy shopping destination, both now and in the future. To facilitate this, we have been working with all of our tenants to regularise their leases. This has

“There is still a small handful of businesses who we continue to liaise with closely, but have not yet reached an agreement with. However, we hope to do so between now and the securing of a planning approval, and hope that CPO powers will not be required.

“We don’t anticipate this will impact on our construction programme and with Southwark Council’s support, we remain committed to delivering this significant regeneration project. When complete, it will position Elephant and Castle as a major town centre, deliver thousands of jobs for local people, a new university building, 1,000 new homes, extensive public space and a new entrance and ticket hall for the London Underground

Northern Line.”

Delancey has two possible options it can use to empty the shopping centre, which it must do before commencing demolition.

On October 20, 2015, Southwark Council discussed using a compulsory purchase order (CPO) in order forcibly to buy out the businesses with long leases. But one year on, the council has confirmed it has no intention to use a CPO to get Patrick or any of the other businesses out of the old 1960s shopping centre. Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “As with any of our regeneration areas we would only want to use CPOs as an absolute last resort.

“I was pleading with [Delancey] just two weeks ago to let me get out of the lease, but they won’t let me.

“At the moment I am not making any money, and by operating I am losing £5,000 per month, but by not operating I will only lose £2,500 a month.”

Ian said his service charge has increased by “20 per cent every year” since Delancey took over the supermarket.

“It’s gone up from £2,000 per quarter to £3,500 per quarter,” he added.

Tourist boat sinks A 40-TONNE tourist boat was saved by firefighters last week, after it started to sink into the Thames by London Bridge.

Emergency services were called to the unoccupied boat as it sank to a depth of two metres at 4am.

The Brigade’s fire boat was called to pump water from the vessel and crews assisted with securing the boat to a mooring barge. The incident was over by 1:30pm, with crews from Lambeth River and Euston fire station stations attending the scene.

Protest at Uber ‘fake doctor certificates’

ANGRY BLACK cab drivers protested outside of TfL’s Blackfriars office last week, over how minicabs are reportedly able to get “fake doctor certificates”.

The group claimed that it is unfair how Uber and minicab drivers are allegedly given preferable treatment when it comes to regulation, which is putting the public’s health and safety at risk.

Grant Davis, of the London Cab Drivers Club, told the News that they had a meeting with TfL about the claims, but were told they “were not able to do anything about it” and that they would “have to wait three years till the licences are up for renewal”.

He said: “But with diseases like epilepsy and heart problems, three years will be too late. At the end of the day, it’s the public’s heath we’re concerned about.”

The protest comes after it was revealed in a Sun investigation that drivers were going to certain GPs and paying around £50 for fake medical records.

Another taxi driver who did not want to be named said: “We are getting regulated to the point that we can’t compete while they’re [TfL] are turning a blind eye to all this.

“We are not allowed any choice in our vehicle or how much we charge. It’s out of our hands.”

Peter Blake, TfL’s Director of Service Operations, said: “We have extensive and regular dialogue with the taxi trade and would encourage the LCDC to continue to engage with us using existing forums.

“The Mayor has recently launched a comprehensive Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan that is aimed at driving up standards and improving safety.

“We will work with all industry stakeholders to help shape the implementation of the Action Plan."

POLICE INVESTIGATING the sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl on a bus in Walworth have released an image of a man they wish to speak to.

At around 1.15pm on Wednesday, July 31, the victim got onto a 25 bus in Walworth Road and made her way to the upper deck, where she took a seat at the rear of the bus.

A short time later a man sat down next to her. On reaching her stop, the victim moved to get off the bus.

Then, as she passed by the man, he sexually assaulted her.

After getting off the bus she went into Superdrug in Butterfly Walk shopping centre at Camberwell Green, and saw the attacker had followed her in.

She purchased some items and left the shop, noticing the suspect was now waiting at a nearby bus stop. She made her way in the opposite direction and luckily he did not follow.

The man is described as aged between 35 and 45 years, approximately 5ft 8in tall, and of

medium build.

TRANSPORT FOR London has launched an investigation after the glass ceiling panels at Canada Water Bus station were found damaged.

The smashed windows were found by a bus driver at 5:30am on Saturday morning leading to the closure of the

station and diversion buses.

Tony Akers, TfL’s Head of Bus Operations, said: “The bus station was closed and buses diverted to use stops just outside while broken glass was cleaned up and safety checks made.

“The station was fully reopened at 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon. A full investigation into the cause of the damage is underway.”

A THEATRE company which took over the 113-year-old Burgess Park library and baths building has won Arts Council England funding for its community projects.

Theatre Delicatessen swung open the grade-II-listed Passmore Edwards Library’s doors in August, and with a £15,000 grant, have announced a programme of arts and theatre activities for young people.

From November until April 2017, Theatre Deli’s ‘Performers in the Park’ programme will open up opportunities for local people to develop their skills and talent in music, comedy and theatre through after-school and evening courses.

For young aspiring actors and actresses, Theatre Deli has said it will work with the group Scaffold State to create a Performers in the Park company for six to ten year olds, eleven to fifteen year olds, and sixteen to eighteen year olds. Meeting on Sunday afternoons, they will work alongside each other to develop everything from drama, to clowning, to singing, to mask work.

Camberwell author pens book on ‘Britain’s black cabaret queen’ CAMBERWELL

Released this month, Stephen Bourne’s Evelyn Dove – Britain’s Black Cabaret Queen documents the eponymous singer’s career, which spanned five decades between the 1920s and 1960s.

Trailblazing her way to success, the London-born artist was the first black woman to sing on BBC radio, as well as being the first black, British woman to succeed in American showbiz.

“She was a pioneer,” said Stephen of the cabaret and theatre star. “She was a woman who did not allow her race to constrain her.”

A specialist in documenting the lives of black, British figures, Stephen became interested in resurrecting Evelyn’s story after meeting a friend of the singer “I met one of Evelyn’s friends two years after she died. She began to tell me some of the stories about Evelyn,” he said. Despite her formidable career achievements, also including fame on the continent, Evelyn is still a relatively unknown figure – which is why Bourne chose her as a subject.

“It’s a story people won’t have heard of,” he said. “She was a big star between the Twenties and Forties – but when she became older and the work dried up, she was forgotten.”

Bourne grew up close to the Peckham Road Music Library, which has since been closed, where he used to read the stories of famous jazz musicians.

AN AWARD-winning Camberwell writer has released a new book telling the story of London-born star Evelyn Dove.

During his career, Stephen has penned a total of fifteen books on forgotten black figures. The release of Evelyn Dove coincides with the 25th anniversary of the release date of his first book, The Sun Shone on our Side of the Street: Aunt Esther’s Story.

Activities ranged from discussions about barriers to active travel to school, to best ways of communicating messages to the school communities and smart ideas of how best to reduce car use.

Suggestions included: a bike raffle for children who consistently ride their bike to school, creating posters to encourage children to walk to school and encouraging more people to carpool, so the number of vehicles on roads can be reduced.

Since 2007, accreditation to STARS has grown from 180 schools to 1,556 schools from all London boroughs.

SOUTHWARK: Futuristic electric car charging points may be coming to parking spaces across Southwark as around 50 planning applications have been made.

If approved, some 150 charging points resembling bollards could pop up around the borough as part of a bid to encourage electric car use and reduce air pollution.

With one already on The Cut, the scheme, called Source London, is seeking to have 400 points around London by the end of the year.

Ben Bulmer, of Bluepoint, the operator of Source London, said: “You’ll be able to use them 24/7 on the street and not hidden away in some multi-storey car park.”

The network is monitored constantly, allowing users to know when one is free and the runners of the scheme know when one needs fixing.

There are currently 400 members of the scheme in Southwark, where they pay £2 an hour for a session.

one of Southwark residents’ most loved institutions. It has saved countless local lives.

Hence the anger at the news that it had spent £10,000 in legal fees trying to block the layout of the new protected cycle-lane that Transport for London (TfL) are building on Westminster Bridge.

Safety campaigners James Avery and Tom Kearney found out through FOI requests, that the hospital had zero scientific evidence for its claim that the protected cycle busstop by-pass would be dangerous.

This column asked Tommies some further questions.

Did they know how many cyclists had been killed or injured on the approach roads to the hospital? They did not.

There have been 315 cyclists injured or killed over the last decade there. Outside the main entrance alone, four cyclists had lifechanging horrific crashes and one was killed.

Nationally only one person was killed by a cyclist in the last 4 years on ALL UK pavements.

Did the hospital know the level of lethal transport pollution outside the hospital?

They did not.

Pollution maps shows it is one of London’s most polluted sites regularly breaking EU safety limits.

Whilst not a single person was killed by cyclists, hundreds of Southwark residents are killed every year from transport pollution and inactivity diseases caused by lack of protected cycle lanes.

The new cycle-route will narrow this busy road for pedestrians making it safer.

It will push the lethal pollution farther away from the pavement, which scientists say radically reduces amount breathed in by pedestrians.

The protected bus-stop bypass will enable staff, patients, children and pensioners to leave the hospital by bike in a far safer way, as the key danger is when overtaking at the bus stop, when forced into path of trucks and buses.

I suspect quite a few. How many drive through with no-one else in the car?

It's time these motorists got into their skulls that they are part of the problem. Now they want to spread their congestion on to the bus lane and make that congested too. The bus lane is used by five bus routes. The buses move scores of passengers and are pretty much packed at rush hour. I suggest that, rather than signing petitions, these drivers should walk or cycle - or take public transport. That's what it's there for.

London's Labour MPs (and others no doubt) are to be given a free vote on Heathrow expansion. A free vote means MPs can ignore their constituents wishes and vote for what suits them personally or politically and where kowtowing to the corporate lobby is almost certainly a

Heathrow will mean more noise day and night, more pollution, more vehicle congestion all around and leading into and out of Heathrow. In short Heathrow expansion will be more of a nightmare than it is at present. And, let's not suppose that expansion just effects the immediate environs of Heathrow Airport.

Anyone who lives under flight paths that blight whole swathes of London knows what a horrendous effect is incurred to the quality of our lives with endless aeroplane noise.

Shamefully Labour supports Heathrow expansion – so did Sadiq Khan when a Labour MP before becoming London Mayor. But, Khan turned-turtle when campaigning for that prestigious municipal office he now smugly occupies. He wasn't stupid to realise Heathrow was a very contentious issue his main mayoral rival Zak Goldsmith had already been extremely, and rightly, hot on for years. Khan could ill afford to loose anti-Heathrow mayoral votes - so he cynically bit his 'faithful lip' and went for a London lie.

But, now how quiet is our London Mayor on Heathrow expansion as it (Heathrow) is about to be voted on in parliament, and which he’s professed a half-hearted ‘no‘ to expansion unlike his predecessor Boris who lambasted horrendous Heathrow for a more user-friendly alternative built away from populations?

Now, when it matters, not a whisper from London Mayor Sadiq Khan about 'the greatest city in the world' soon to be overflown and polluted with even more noise and other environmental blight even more often, and often, and often...

Brace ourselves for the nightmare of noise and fuel polluting aeroplanes over our capital while the London Mayor and our MPs (bar a few) raise barely a whisper against Heathrow's expansion about to roar ever more often over our London rooftops.

Shocked at Mind

Last Friday while walking along Grove Vale I saw four or five books-cookery and by such names as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay-all in perfect condition-all on the pavement.

Next to them were three or four jigsaws. As they were only four footsteps from The Mind Charity Store-and directly in front of their door -I assumed they were for the shop.

In I went and told the manager that there were some books etc. Outside for them. He replied "the Council will come to take them away!" Needless to say I was flummoxed and puzzled and asked him if they were not taking donations of perfectly good items!

Again I got exactly the same reply!

Even though Mind's website asks for donations it is clear they really don't want them. I feel sorry for the person who left these gifts for the charity believing they were doing good whereas their thoughtfulness was completely ignored. Avoid this charity store which faces Goose Green as it is clearly a waste of time giving them anything. I wrote to the Mind headquarters but have heard nothing apart from a thank you! The staff at Goose Green could not be bothered to walk the few steps to collect your gift-instead try St.Christophers on Lordship Lane where they appreciate your efforts!

EXT YEAR will see the 40th anniversary of the 1977 Housing (Homeless Persons) Act.

This Act gave councils a legal duty to house homeless people who meet certain ‘priority need’ criteria. This legislation has saved tens of thousands of people from the devastation of homelessness over the decades.

Though a huge step forwards, the bill did not end homelessness. Every week I see local residents who are either threatened by or have experienced homelessness, and each story is heart-breaking.

Councils are working hard to do the best that they can in difficult circumstances. But we have a housing crisis in England, and the current legislation allows too many people to go without the help that most of us would expect to be there should we have the misfortune to be threatened with homelessness. So it is time to look again at the Homeless Persons Act passed all those years ago.

The law as it stands means that in order to qualify for meaningful help, homeless people must be deemed to be in ‘priority need’. In practical terms, this covers only families with children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. But large numbers of people fall outside these categories and therefore receive advice, but not more practical support. Homelessness in England is rising at the moment - more than 8,000 people slept rough in London alone last year, more than double the rate since 2010.

And so the Select Committee on which I sit in Parliament has taken the decision to endorse a new Private Members’ Bill. Tabled by a fellow committee member and with crossparty sponsors including myself, the ‘Homelessness Reduction Bill’ could finally put an end to a legal situation that means homeless people can be turned away when they go to their council for help. Council budgets are also the subject of severe cuts, so new obligations must come with the resources to deliver and I will hold the government to account for this.

But we can’t stand by while the devastation of homelessness affects so many in our communities.

Growing pains in The Bunker

WE WALKED gingerly down a car ramp into the dark depths where we found The Bunker, the latest theatre to open in Southwark. Inside there are cold, concrete pillars, remnants of the underground car park that this once was, though the stark space now softened with colour, carpeting, lighting and seating on three sides of a stage area, writes Michael Holland ...

The Bunker mentality only comes in to play in the low-ceilinged bar where anyone over six foot has to stoop. I felt for the tall barman who may find himself with neck and back problems before too long…

The inaugural production is the awardwinning Skin a Cat by Isley Lynn and follows Alana on her journey towards losing her virginity, taking in her first period, where she asks, ‘Am I broken?’, to a mother who is far from helpful in the

But, yes, it is often uncomfortable for people to listen to talk about tampons and anal sex, but in Skin a Cat the writer treats the audience with TLC; the actual sex scenes are more interpretive than penetrative; they are done with a gentleness that I feel is for our benefit as well as the actors, plus the spot-on comic lines ease any residue awkwardness.

Through the almost twenty years of her

exhibit the works they have made in response to this extraordinary city.

DULWICH PICTURE GALLERY Gallery Road, SE21 (020 8693 5254) Record Breaker: The World’s Longest Landscape As part of The Big Draw, the Dulwich Picture Gallery is attempting to create the world’s longest landscape, inspired by Adriaen van de Velde. The mixed media landscape masterpiece will be based on the sights and communities of South East London. People are invited to come along and draw anything that reflects their favourite things about being in London, to join a number of

life played out in Skin a Cat we meet Alana’s boyfriends, girlfriends, doctors, nurses and therapists that she interacts with, the other parts played perfectly by Jessica Clark and Jassa Ahluwalia.

Alana grows up, as we all have, in that minefield of tentative teenage sex, but, seemingly, with apparent ease, wondering what everyone else is panicking about. She doesn’t consider her vaginismus to be a problem, but soon discovers that other people do.

Isley Lynn based the play on her own experiences, and everyone there could relate to many parts of it, so when we laugh at what Alana says we are also recalling similar incidents in our own lives.

In a non-stop 90 minutes Lydia Larson, who is on the whole time, has a lot of words to say, and she delivers really well.

We believe she is nine just as we believe her being 25; we feel the pain when she is trying hard to make love, and we feel her shame when doctors explain ‘procedures’.

But so too are we carried through the years by Jassa Ahluwalia playing all the males, from geeky student to urbane hippy dude, and Jessica Clark as the uptight mum, best friend and a West Country nurse who was so nice I really hope that this is so autobiographical that she is a real person.

The hour and a half flew by, and it was the best play I’ve seen for many months.

Hunted in SE1

WE RECEIVED a message telling us our security had been breached, that people with evil intentions were looking for us and our lives depended on following orders that could save us and the world, writes Michael Holland...

We were the prey in Bertie Watkins’ Hunted, a theatrical experience from Colab where audiences take the starring roles as they are chased by enemy agents, collect secret codes and packages, hide and evade capture.

At a designated time we went to Waterloo Station where further instructions were downloaded onto our phones. With these new commands we were told get to the next rendezvous quickly. I was with Agent Two who told me we had 10 seconds to vacate the area or risk capture. Listening through headphones she began counting down: ‘…7, 6, 5, 4…’ We ran.

With orders coming by phone it looked like everyone on the concourse was part of the action because most held mobiles to their ears. Someone looked at me dodgy, but that may have been because I was acting strange – legging it down the escalator while looking back with a panicked look on my face for any pursuers closing in on us!

The voice in our ear led us to safety and to a rendezvous with someone on our side where other hunted people had been sent. When we got there we could see she was scared, wildeyed and in fear of getting caught, plus was putting her life at risk to guide us through streets where the CCTV had been taken out. But one

of our group noticed someone following us, then a car drove slowly by, scrutinising us. ‘Run!’ our leader screamed. People on the street wondered what was happening, and they too became fearful.

We hid behind cars to lose our tail, and was just about to set about an enemy agent who had tracked us down, only to find that he was a resident merely going to his car. He said he was going to call the cops, which meant we had to once again leave the safety of a hiding place.

More cars went past unhurriedly with the occupants eying us intensely; it felt like we were surrounded by the evil foe. Two of the strongest men in our faction were sent to check for anyone following us, but they never came back. Was no one or nowhere safe?

Eventually, on a side street, we ducked into a darkened building where we thought we would be protected. Alas, we were wrong.

The situation got out of control. We tried to escape though the claustrophobic ventilation tunnels…

And that, Folks, is where I will leave it. Needless to say I made it out of there alive; one of our crew said it was the best fun he had had on a Saturday night for a long time. As Agent Two and I made our way home she was still high on adrenaline.

were in need of some hope, so they thought they should make a show about it. They wanted it to be a show about the triumph of hope, but it turned out that things are not as simple as that. They are knotted and complex.

Hope and hopelessness hold hands.

When The Blitz came to Southwark

IN SEPTEMBER 1927, Bermondsey’s Dr Alfred Salter is said to have foretold the coming of another world war, where Southwark would become an area of “smashed buildings, wrecked factories, devastated houses, mangled corpses and bodies of helpless men”, writes Alex Yeates...

Come the year of 1940, his prediction became a reality, as Nazi bombs rained down devastation across London. The history of Southwark during the Blitz has been detailed by historian Neil Bright in a book published last month, which seeks to show how the modern day borough was formed out of a number of unique tales during the war.

The first person to be killed in Bermondsey during the blitz was Sarah Hough, whose house in Storks Road had a bomb land on it.

Although initially surviving and being rushed to St Olave’s Hospital, she died. Later that night, two bombs exploded in the railway over the Lindsey Street Arch air-raid shelter, where five seeking refuge lost their lives.

One Southwark street in particular experienced the Blitz in full force.

Arnott Street, just off the Old Kent Road saw twelve die on the fateful night of September 6, 1940. Annie Leary was one resident who was paralysed in the blast, but embodied the famous Blitz Spirit. In an interview with the Daily Express a few weeks later she said: “Hitler can’t a break a Cockney’s Heart!”

The following day is remembered as a “lovely late summer, early autumn day” where football fans eagerly awaited the local derby of Millwall vs Charlton at the Den in New Cross. Alan Tizzard, a Rotherhithe boy at the time, recalled what followed: “On that sunny summer afternoon I was sitting on the kitchen step whittling away at my model when the sirens sounded. No sooner had the sirens sounded than planes came into sight. They were high by the standards of the day, maybe 20,000 feet. They were twisting and turning, bobbing and weaving. To me this was a grand show.

“So far my sight of war had been at a distance and this knocked the cinema into a cocked hat. From the front of the house we did not see the approach of part of Luftwaffe Zwei; from across the Channel they came in from behind us. A sudden shower of spent cartridge cases rained down all around us. What had been the dull ever-changing drone of the fighters in dogfights high above our heads with their guns making no more than a phut changed to pandemonium.

“The stakes had changed. We were now part of it.”

Keetons Road Rest Centre, a former peacetime school. The people were mainly evacuated from Downtown and were settling in for the night.

Just after midnight a bomb exploded near the rear of the school which was quickly followed by another.

Many were killed and injured as the centre was full of evacuees.

Horrified by the events at the school, King George VI paid a visit to the scene and is said to have been “visibly moved”. He spoke to the school caretaker, Mr Miles and his family, who recalled: “The King spoke to me as man to man. You could see how shocked he was by the damage. He was kind and had a warm feeling for ordinary people no matter how humble. And I shall never forget the pain and suffering in his face when he caught sight of the bodies of the raid victims among the debris.”

As the first four months of The Blitz drew to a close, it was recorded that Southwark had taken a large number of losses. In Bermondsey 376 people had died, as well as 449 in Camberwell. To read more about Southwark in the Blitz

W

henever I’m visiting an Indian restaurant I’m always hoping that it has moved on from the clichéd Indian restaurant and is trying something modern. Rarely is this the case, writes Michael Holland...

When Jim and I entered Jaflong, a recently opened restaurant in East Dulwich, I could see it was all shiny and new. The crockery was plain white, which is quite contemporary, there was wood and mirrors on the walls that made it stand out as different from the norm, and flowers decorated each nicely laid table.

Mr Ali, the owner, greeted us with a handshake and proceeded to show us photos of a local dignitary opening Jaflong just six weeks prior.

He was obviously very proud and told us of plans to completely change the menu after discussions with his chefs and when they had all settled in, but even though some changes have been made, more tweaking was to come.

Yes, there were plenty of the old staples to be had, but that’s because many customers look no further than their usual vindaloo, chips and onion bhajee, and if that’s what they want that’s what they shall have. But Mr Ali has things on his menu that are new to me: dishes from the Jaflong region and fish dishes made with a special Bengali river fish.

Our host talked us into Papadoms with a nice selection of pickles and dips that varied from mild to Wow! While tucking in to those we scanned our menus.

To start we had a mixed platter to get a feel for the different meats, bhajee and samosas in Jaflong, and Aloo Choff, a new one to me that is mashed potato and vegetables rolled in almonds and fried until golden.

The outside was crisp and that crunchy bite balanced out the creamy interior. Nothing wrong at all with either of those openers.

Jaflong does not sell alcohol but Mr Ali welcomes people bringing their own drinks, for which he charges no corkage, which is an honourable gesture, I think. Me and Jimmy had sparkling water and Sprite. We wanted a mix of surf and turf for our main course so decided on the Meat Thali, a huge selection of: Tikka Masala, Vegetable Curry, Tandoori Chicken, Sheik Kebab, Methi Gosth, plus Nan Bread and Basmati Rice. The Thali came on

perfection, whether that was the nicely marinated tandoori chicken or the succulent lamb.

Jaflong has reached the Top Ten shortlist of the British Takeaway Awards, and judging by how many times their delivery driver was in and out I can see that it is very popular indeed.

While we were dining a regular customer came in and said: ‘I enjoyed that Lamb bhuna so much the other night I want it again!’ I

was informed that the man is a member of the local Curry Club…

Along with the Thali we had King Prawn Naga, a hot and spicy number (3 Chillies on the Richter Scale) made to their own recipe using the Bengali Naga Chilli, one of which was served right on top of the dish like a Boss. The tantalising sauce was perfect for mopping up with the

nan bread. Saying that, my son opposite was doing the same thing with his nan in the tikka sauce.

‘Hmmm,’ he whimpered as pink masala dripped off his chin.

Everything was good. The rice was perfect and how I wish I could get it at home - each grain separate, with its own identity, and not some sticky mush, and the meats are cooked to

FISHER BOUNCED back from their 6-1 hammering at Crowborough with two consecutive high-scoring wins in a week.

Manager Gary Abbott was forced to issue an apology to the fans following the heavy defeat, but his side responded in the best way possible, with back-toback cup victories.

Firstly, a safe passage into the next round of the Macron SCEFL Challenge Cup was assured with a comfortable 40 win over Snodland Town. Tyrell McLeod-Bentley and Mickandros Mackagou eased the Fish into a 2-0 half-time lead, before an own goal and an Antwon McKenzie strike late on in the second half added a gloss to the score-line.

That victory was followed up by 5-2 Kent Reliance Senior Trophy win over Lydd Town on Saturday afternoon.

The sides went in level at half-time, courtesy of strikes from Trey Williams for Fisher and James Everitt for Lydd, along with an own-goal-a-piece, but the

hosts took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second period, securing the win through Scott Wason’s 49th minute strike and a further two goals from Williams, completing his hat-trick in the 72nd and 88th minutes.

In contrast to last week, Abbott was full of praise for certain individuals, as well as again mentioning the Fisher fathful.

He said: “Spencer Forte and Joel Mensah in the middle of the park have done really well again. We’ve seen Alfie Roche come in and do a job at right back, with young Darius moving to left back. Scott Wason and Joe Wadman at the back looked shaky in first half, but grew into the game and looked much better in second half, with Scott scoring with a great strike.

“We had some great chances to finish them off with Trey scoring a hat-trick but he could have had six!

On the subject of the fans, the manager added: “They don’t stop singing. What a great bunch to have behind us, also after letting six goals in last week with a disappointing and embarrassing second half.”

DULWICH HAMLET maintained their unbeaten league away record on Saturday after fighting back from a two-goal deficit to draw with Leatherhead.

DAVID HAYE and Tony Bellew look set for a mega showdown in the ring following an altercation on Saturday night.

Bellew destroyed BJ Flores inside three rounds to retain his WBC Cruiserweight title at the Echo Arena, but instead of celebrating, immediately turned his attentions to Haye, who was ringside for Sky Sports.

Insults were traded between the Scouser and the Bermondsey boxer, with Bellew commenting: “He has been conning the British public. Let’s be totally honest, those two guys you’ve just fought, they’re now working on nightclub doors or putting the bins out. They were a joke.

Kola Omoniyi, weighing in at 70kg, had his second junior bout, winning on points unanimously.

Jacob Koutouan, at the same weight, also won unanimously in only his third bout.

Chris Brown, at 91kg, won his second fight in five days with a second round stoppage, whilst Charles Owuso lost on a split decision in his debut bout at 81kg.

THERE WAS a mixed bag of results for the Docklands JFC teams at the weekend.

The Under-7’s lost against a good Dulwich side but battled well, whilst the Under-15’s drew 3-3 against Weighall Wanderers.

The Under-15’s failed to take their chances and found themselves 2-0 down at the break, with Wanderers grabbing a third from the penalty spot just after the

re-start.

The Rotherhithe and Bermondsey outfit began to get their game going and got one back through Kyron Williams’ run and shot, before Teddy O'Rourke's persistence was rewarded with a goal, toe poking the ball over the advancing keeper with a neat finish.

With just two minutes left on the clock, the Docks drew level, courtesy of Teddy Belchers' fine run and finish. After picking up a loose ball out on the left, he beat three players and curled a great shot into the bottom corner to seal the draw.

“The new date enables the two sets of players to have extra recovery time before their matches on Bank Holiday Monday January 2 (Millwall face AFC Wimbledon), and also means that supporters have extra time to enjoy their New Year's Eve festivities.”

FORMER SKIPPER AT THE DEN

FORMER MILLWALL captain Stuart Nethercott will be on the Legends Tour at The Den on Friday, December 30, the club have confirmed.

Nethercott made 242 appearances for the Lions in six years with the club. The former Spurs defender was skipper when Millwall won promotion from the old Division Two as champions in 2000-01 The following season he made 52 appearances as Millwall stormed Division One to reach the play-off semifinal under Mark McGhee where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Birmingham.

Trio continue comebacks

SHAUN Hutchinson is edging closer to a competitive first-team return after playing 75 minutes for Millwall’s U23s on Monday.

Hutchinson came through his scheduled number of minutes against the Lions’ South London rivals at Bromley’s Hayes Lane.

The 25-year-old centre-back has struggled with hamstring and calf problems that have restricted him to just a handful of minutes this season, in the 51 defeat at Peterborough in August.

Hutchinson played just eleven times for Fulham last season, and has completed just one 90-minute game in five months.

Neil Harris is therefore careful not the rush him back, though he could be in contention against Fleetwood this weekend.

Shaun Cummings played 70 minutes against Palace. The defender has been out of first-team action since the beginning of February, when a long-standing knee problem finally required surgery.

Cummings will also not be rushed back, with Mahlon Romeo having nailed down the right-back slot during Cummings’ layoff.

There was further good news when another centre-back, Christian Mbulu, played 20 minutes for Justin Skinner’s side.

Millwall secured their third win in a row in the Professional Development League as Lewis White scored five minutes from time. Having not won in their first five fixtures, Skinner’s side are now unbeaten in four games and move up to seventh place in the table in the south section of the competition.

MILLWALL WILL play Southend in the first round of the FA Cup with the fixture taking place November 5/6.

The clubs have met twice before in the competition and Southend have won them both at Roots Hall, 1-0 in 1992-93 and 4-1 in 2013-14, when Neil Harris and Scott Fitzgerald were caretakers bosses after the sacking of Steve Lomas.

Southend have also already defeated Millwall this season, winning 3-1 at home in League One. Millwall are unbeaten in six firstround fixtures, their last defeat at this stage against Hartlepool in 1999-00.

Elsewhere in the draw, David Forde’s Portsmouth were paired with Paris Cowan-Hall’s Wycombe Wanderers.

Their obduracy suggested they would have been comfortable defending that territory in and around their box for another couple of hours without wilting.

This was their fourth clean sheet in a row and against a Millwall side that had scored in each of their previous 25 games a true statement that they have the resilience, as well as the attacking punch, to seriously justify their short title odds.

Lions boss Neil Harris would have admired their defensive tenacity and discipline. It was exactly what he acknowledges has been missing from his side recently as yet again they failed to keep a clean sheet in the league. The last one was against Oldham on the opening day of the season.

This was actually a game in which Millwall didn’t do an awful lot wrong, and the reaction of the crowd at the end suggested they had recognised the effort their side had put in. But for all Millwall got the ball forward and dominated in a territorial sense after the break, the fear is teams know where they are going to get hit and set up accordingly.

Millwall don’t really have anyone with that real attacking subtlety to unlock defences that drop deep and ravenously pounce on every loose ball within a 30-yeard radius of goal, which is what Bolton did on Tuesday night. Bolton knew what they were going to get and Millwall didn’t disappoint them. Only once in the entire 90 minutes did Phil Parkinson’s side lose an attacking player in the box, and then Steve Morison couldn’t direct his header away from goalkeeper Mark Howard.

And when Bolton got two chances they finished clinically through Sammy Ameobi and David Wheater.

Central to Bolton’s defensive organisation was former Lion Mark Beevers. He was booed throughout, though not maliciously. Beevers had said during the week, “it doesn’t matter how many we score as long as we keep the back door shut”, and that was an fitting description of the first half.

Millwall have been nowhere near as defensively sound at set-pieces as they were in the second half of last season with Beevers in their defence.

Byron Webster was detailed to pick up his former team-mate at dead balls but Bolton had four players over 6ft 3ins in their team.

It was the feet rather than the head of one of them, Ameobi, that Millwall needed to worry about in the second minute but after halfclearing a corner no one closed down the on-loan Newcastle attacker and he rifled a drive past Jordan Archer from 25 yards. Harris had again named Ben Thompson on the left of midfield and though Joe Martin gallantly tried to provide natural attacking width, most of the threat in the first half came down the right side where the pace of Fred Onyedinma and Mahlon Romeo unsettled their opponents. From two crosses from that area Thompson and Calum Butcher headed over but they did so under pressure. There was always another Bolton defender

“I thought Fred did really well,” Harris said. “We looked direct and quick and had good deliveries down the right-hand side.

“I’ll look back and I think I’ll be frustrated. But I said to the boys there will be so many positives. We’ve got beaten by a really strong Bolton rearguard performance.”

Bolton were comfortable shuttling back to into their own box as Millwall gradually forced them

deeper. Beevers would have warned his team-mates about the aerial threat of Morison and how to counter it, and when Tom Thorpe went off injured Derik Osede came on to perform that same defensive role in front of his centre-backs.

Morison appealed at one point to referee Darren Deadman that he was being impeded by Osede and Wheater, but there was little space for Millwall’s top scorer or Lee Gregory to negotiate routes to goal. So often Gregory was about to shoot when

Morison will feel he should have scored when for once he was left free to get his head to Shaun Williams’ free-kick, but Howard was wellpositioned to save.

Bolton continued to funnel Millwall attacks into the wide areas where they felt confident they had enough defensive cover and nous to cope.

Soon after Jay Spearing had shepherded Morison’s ball towards Thompson over the line and wide, Harris replaced the midfielder with

Aiden O’Brien.

It was mostly being played in Bolton’s half at this point, but it needed someone to produce an element of surprise. Millwall never looked like they had anyone capable of it.

Harris brought on David Worrall and Shane Ferguson for Onyedinma and Martin with just under 20 minutes left. Onyedinma had done well but perhaps Harris felt his side needed earlier deliveries from wide areas.

For all Millwall’s ascendancy they still hadn’t really troubled Howard since that Morison chance. The home fans optimistically appealed for a penalty when O’Brien went down in the box, but Bolton were far too canny to offer their opponents a free shot on goal.

box, the ball that fell to Joe Martin at the back post, it has got to go in the net. We got ourselves in a couple of good positions in the second half on the counter attack and maybe put the ball in too quickly.

“We did get those key moments but Bolton just defended really well.

“You pick the positives, you always want to be better. We’ll look back and there was so much good stuff, so much good play. Where we didn’t quite play as well was in the last ten minutes, (we have to look at) why not.”

AIDEN O’BRIEN admitted Millwall players were “down” after Tuesday night’s defeat to Bolton.

A fifth league loss in six games leaves the Lions above Oldham and the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Sammy Ameobi and David Wheater scored in the first and last five minutes to inflict a second home defeat on Millwall in the league this season.

Fleetwood this Saturday it will have been more than two months since they recorded a league win at The Den. Millwall couldn’t find a way to break down a Bolton defence that included former Lion Mark Beevers. The closest they came was through Steve Morison’s first-half header that was saved by Mark Howard.

But O’Brien wants the side to put the disappointment behind them as they get ready to take on Fleetwood.

“Watching from the sidelines from the start we had a lot of chances to score but the keeper has made a few good saves,” O’Brien said. “It just wasn’t our night.

goal, it just wasn’t happening. We’ve just got to carry on and hope we get the win on Saturday, that’s the main thing.

“I thought Beevs was excellent, Wheater was excellent, winning their fair share of headers. On another day the chance that Moro had when he flicked it on and it hit the goalie (goes in), he didn’t have a clue where it was.

“Everyone had a little word with Beevers before and after, he was a big part of the team, as everyone saw last season.

“We need to come back stronger on Saturday, work hard on the training pitch on Thursday and Friday, get ready for Fleetwood at home. “(Tuesday night) is gone, they got the

three points and are happy, we’re all down and sad but things can change.”

O’Brien returned to the side after he was originally expected to be out until the end of October with the knee injury he picked up against Rochdale.

And he wants to quickly regain the form that saw him score in three successive games before his setback.

O’Brien said: “I thank the physio and sports science staff for getting me back as soon as they did. On the positive side I was happy to get out there and shake off all the cobwebs.

“I was in flying form before I got injured, scoring a few goals. I just need to get back into the flow of things and hopefully we can get going again.”

Both players featured for the U23s in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Bromley on Monday.

Cummings has been out since February, while Hutchinson has featured just once in competitive action for Millwall since his move from Fulham in the summer.

The Lions lost 2-0 to Bolton on Tuesday night, the ninth game in a row in all competitions they have failed to keep a clean sheet.

Harris’ side haven’t managed a clean sheet in the league since the opening-day 3-0 win over Oldham at The Den. They have leaked 25 goals in thirteen League One fixtures so far this season, more than every other team except Gillingham.

Millwall’s injury list is shortening, and Aiden O’Brien came on as a substitute against Bolton after recovering from a knee problem.

Asked whether Cummings and Hutchinson could be in contention to face Fleetwood, Harris said: “Possibly. They both got through 75 minutes or so (Monday), but they’ve both been out a long time.

“Obviously Aiden’s back in the group and that will stand him in good stead.

“Hutchinson and Cummings, it would be nice to have them fit sooner rather than later, but we have to be careful with them and only put them in when they are ready.”
