In addition, Camberwell (which is used by officers as a base rather than a working station) and Kennington could be sold off, along with other buildings used by the police in Southwark.

The front counter at Walworth police station, which had 3.2 crimes reported on average each day for the month of May, will remain open.

Big changes for borough policing

BIG CHANGES are planned for Southwark's police and how the public interacts with them.

Proposals to close front counters at Southwark, Peckham and Kennington police stations - and to sell off Kennington and Camberwell nicks - have been revealed, but they seem based largely on cash saving.

Officers would also no longer be present at Seven Islands Leisure Centre, Bellenden Road Retail Park, Dulwich Library, Canada Water Library, and Butterfly Walk shopping centre.

Figures have been produced that show the numbers of people using front counters isn't high.The front counter at Walworth had 3.2 crimes reported on average each day in May. Peckham had, on average, 2.1 reports, Southwark had 1.5 and Kennington 0.8.

But the cross-London measures are being proposed by the Mayor of London in an attempt to save £10m a year, and invest those savings in to frontline policing. How and when this is to be achieved is not clear. Neither has whether that investment would just simply plug a gap, or be new money that will create more police officers.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has sought to reassure Londoners thet the number of dedicated ward officers will be increased, with two in place in every ward across the capital by the end of the year, alongside one PCSO But he has also said government cuts to the Metropolitan Police services had left him with “no choice” but to take drastic action. “The Government urgently needs to properly fund the Met police so that they can do their job and keep Londoners safe,” he said. So it seems he is not happy introducing such measures.

Let's remember that this report comes on top of plans to merge Southwark and Lambeth's 'police command', with one top officer possibly over-seeing both boroughs and perhaps even being based in Brixton.

This is a far cry from the days when the Met saw it fit to have working stations with front counters in Borough High Street (Southwark police station), Rotherhithe, Walworth, Peckham, Camberwell and Dulwich.

If these proposals get given the go ahead, what will Southwark's police presence map look like? There will be one working front counter, at Walworth, and the only police stations left will be Southwark, Walworth and Peckham.

It's hard to predict what effect these measures will have, and it's important not to go for the knee jerk reaction that all such cost-saving proposals are bad.

These proposals are just that - proposals at the moment. If you want to keep your police station front counter, then it's important to have your say.

Ronaldinho mobbed by fans as he turns up for a kick-around in a Peckham park

BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL legend Ronaldinho was mobbed by shocked fans last week when he turned up for a kick-about in Peckham.

The ambassador for Barcelona FC, who helped bring the 2002 World Cup home for Brazil, turned up dressed head-to-toe in black in Brimmington Park, near Asylum Road.

His appearance in SE15 appeared to be connected with a promotion with Nike and Pro Direct Soccer.

A video published on Twitter was posted at 11:18pm by a PR agent who worked for the latter.

But the footage shows the 37-yearold (full name is Ronaldo de Assis Moreira) quickly being surrounded by dozens of buzzing fans.

At 8:53pm he had sparked excitement by tweeting a picture of himself overlooking the Thames, saying "Peckham, I'm ready to ball".

The front counter at Rotherhithe station was already closed in 2013.

The Mayor has launched a full public consultation on the draft plans to reduce the number of police front counters in London to put an additional £10 million equivalent to the cost of 170 police constables - into frontline policing in the Capital.

He said Government cuts to the Metropolitan Police services had left him with “no choice” but to take drastic action.

Two arrested over fatal stabbing

CAMBERWELL: Two men have been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Mohamed Kakay outside St Giles’ Church last year.

The Met confirmed two men from south-east London, aged 20 and sixteen, were arrested on Tuesday, July 11, on suspicion of murder.

They were the sixth and seventh suspects to be arrested in the investigation, and have been released on bail until mid-August while the investigation continues.

The attack happened on November 19 last year, at about 9:15am, in the grounds of the church in Camberwell Church Street.

Officers attended and found a man, later identified as Mr Kakay, 33, suffering from stab injuries. He was taken by ambulance to hospital but he died later that afternoon.

Mr Kakay was originally from Sierra Leone and came to the UK as an asylum seeker. It is believed that he had entered the grounds at the back of St Giles' Church at about 9am.

PC Donna Blackwood was dismissed following a three-day misconduct hearing, which ended on Wednesday, July 5.

It was alleged that on November 16, 2015, PC Blackwood tested positive for cannabis following a substance-misuse test. The hearing found that the officer had a case to answer in respect of the standards of professional behaviour, in relation to 'discreditable conduct' and 'fitness for duty'. The panel found the allegations proven and that PC Blackwood had breached the Met's standards of professional behaviour in such a serious way that this amounted to gross misconduct. The panel determined that the only appropriate sanction was dismissal without notice.

“So hopefully, not only will the traders here get support soon, but in the event of any other attack anywhere in the country people can expect quicker support and more support which would be a silver lining of what was a horrific incident.”

THE BUSINESS minister has vowed to “call in” any insurance providers yet to pay out to traders who suffered losses after the Borough Market terror attack.

Margot James MP did not make a “direct offer” to help businesses and traders affected by the attack when she met with them at the market on Thursday, July 13.

However she did commit to “calling in” insurance providers who have yet to pay out on some of the business interruption clauses and terror insurance.

The Conservative MP met with the market’s senior team before hearing first-hand accounts about how businesses were affected by the market being closed for eleven days during the

police investigation.

She was joined by Bermondsey & Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle, who called on the Government to step in and help.

“There are jobs on the line here,” he told the News. “If we don’t want the terrorists to win, we need the Government and others to step in and do

more now.

“There hasn’t been a direct offer today, which is a shame. Lots of people are stepping in, but sadly the Government is yet to do so.

Ancient grave may have been robbed in past say experts

AN EXTREMELY rare Roman sarcophagus has been found at an ancient burial site in Borough.

The stone coffin, has been described as ‘the find of a lifetime’ as only two other similar sarcophagi have been discovered in their original burial places.

The excavation at Harper Road began in January this year, and revealed a large trench around the coffin and found the lid had been moved – suggesting the grave had been discovered and robbed in the past. It is possible that only valuable items were taken and the body left, a council spokesperson has said.

The coffin is being carefully moved to the Museum of London, where its contents, which are not yet known, will be exhumed.

The Harper Road excavation is one of many archaeological projects running across Southwark. Recent archaeological research has shown that Roman Southwark was the focus of ritual activity.

Experts now know that the area formed a ‘complex ritual landscape’ containing various religious monuments and a vast Roman cemetery on sites such as Dickens Square, Lant Street and Trinity Street, where a range of burial practices were used, with graves often revealing exotic goods from across the Roman Empire.

Other Roman finds in Southwark include the burial of a fourteen-year-old girl in nearby Lant Street - one of the greatest finds in Britain, the council has said. Her 4th century burial site included

a bone inlay box, and ivory clasp knife depicting a leopard and glassware.

Only two other sarcophagi have been found in their original burial place in recent years, one from St Martin-in-the Fields near Trafalgar Square in 2006 and one from Spitalfields in 1999.

Gillian King, Senior Planner: Archaeology, at Southwark Council, said: “In my long archaeological career I have excavated many hundreds of burials, but this is the first Roman sarcophagus I have ever discovered, still surviving in its original place of deposition. I have seen them in museums, but I think part of me believed that they had probably all been found by now!

“It really is a very special discovery.

Personally, I find it really fascinating to contemplate that this area - which we are now so familiar with - was once, during the Roman period, so completely different. It really does make me feel very honoured that my role at Southwark Council contributes to protecting amazing archaeological treasures like this, and our work means that we can ensure that the historic environment is championed and preserved for the enjoyment of us and future generations.”

Cllr Peter John, the leader of Southwark Council, said: “This is a remarkable and exciting find. In Southwark we take our duty as custodians of the borough’s rich, varied and important archaeological heritage very seriously.

“This Roman sarcophagus is the find of a lifetime and a credit to the council’s commitment to ensuring that the borough’s history is properly conserved.”

SOUTHWARK PARK was cordoned off after a man suffered a head wound in what police believed to be a hammer attack.

Officers were called to Surrey Quays Station, in Lower Road, Rotherhithe, at about 7.45am on Tuesday, July 18, following reports of a man suffering a

Police believe the man, thought to be in his 40s, was attacked by another man with a hammer in Lower Road,

by Southwark Park.

He was taken to hospital to be treated but his injuries were not thought to be life threatening. Officers from the British Transport Police also attended, along with London Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for the Met Police told the News: “It is believed that the victim was attacked by another man with a hammer by Southwark Park.”

There have been no arrests and police enquiries continue.

Container plan for Camberwell

CAMBERWELL : A property firm is looking for feedback from residents on proposals to create a “communal area” of fourteen refitted shipping containers near Denmark Hill.

A PROPERTY FIRM hoping to redevelop the Aylesham Shopping Centre in Peckham has showcased new plans for its high-rise housing scheme to include a ground-floor shopping complex.

Public consultation events have recently been hosted by Tiger Developments, who last year unveiled proposals for 400 new homes on the site, in a building up to 20 storeys tall.

But the firm has since released artist’s impressions of what could become the ground floor of the development.

Tiger has described the designs as “pedestrian-friendly” and would “open up this large site and help stitch it back into the surrounding streets”.

Before the consultation, the company said: “We would like to explore with local people how we get the right mix of daytime and night time activities, shops and businesses, community activities and open spaces, to make this a place that celebrates the best of Peckham.

“The ground-level will be how 95 per cent of people experience the Aylesham Centre site on a day-to-day basis, so it’s very important.”

A spokesman for the company also told the News: “We know that the 20storey aspect will take up a lot of attention, so we want to get the first step right.”

The spokesman added that another consultation, with details of the residential aspect of the scheme, will likely be shown to the public “before Christmas”.

In April, community group Peckham Citizens worked with Tiger Developments’ development director, Graham Haydon-White, who said publicly “Our intent is to comply with [Southwark Council’s] policy, which is for 35 per cent of new homes to be affordable to local people”.

Peckham Citizens have also lobbied the company to ensure that the new homes will be priced in-line with local average incomes, and that one-third of all jobs created, including managerial roles, will go to local people.

Leaflets distributed by Spot Property said: “Similar to the successful concepts already established at Shoreditch and Croydon, the proposal for Camberwell will provide opportunities for independent businesses to provide food and drink and local enterprise/commercial facilities to the local area.”

A suggested location for the new attraction is a section of the car park beside Morrisons, bordered by Danville Road, Orpheus Street and Wren Road.

The proposed venture would be just down the road from the Artworks, the ‘box park’ in Elephant and Castle.

Spot Property hope to hear from local residents and local businesses before looking to submit a planning application to Southwark Council. A public consultation event will take place today (July 20) between 3pm and 8pm at the former HSBC Bank in 23 Denmark Hill.

CAMBERWEL: This year’s Camberwell Fair will return to Camberwell Green on Saturday, with a host of music, performances and exotic food from local traders.

Music will begin from 12pm and continue to 9pm on two stages, the Wormfood Stage and the Camberwell Stage. A Village Green area will also have activities for families between 1pm and 6pm, including field games and a kids’ and parents’ Sports Day. Camberwell Fair was reborn in 2015 with help from Southwark Council, as a historical event which previously existed for nearly 600 between 1279 until 1855.

Top Aussie paralympians set up home in Bermondsey

AUSTRALIA’S TOP Paralympic athletes have set up home in Bermondsey, using Southwark Park as their training ground.

The park’s recently refurbished athletics track, Southwark Athletics Centre, is being used by the Aussie Paralympics team as their base while the World Para-Championships takes place in Stratford.

The Southwark Athletics Centre, which is run by Everyone Active on behalf of Southwark Council, last week hosted athletes from other

countries around the globe in preparation for the World ParaChampionships which is taking place July 14 to 23.

Competitors from Europe, Asia, North and South America were out in force at the track to practice ahead of the event.

The Australian team will be using the track as a base camp for their training and preparation throughout the duration of the ten-day competition, which is taking place at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

“This is the biggest global sporting event of the year and we were excited to welcome athletes to our centre,” says Everyone Active general manager, Paul Bew. “We hope that by Southwark Athletics Centre acting as a training facility to Australian Paralympians, that we might attract more members of the community

who live with disabilities but want to engage in athletic pursuits.”

A GROUP of Buddhists are opposing plans for a six-storey student block beside their home.

Developers are preparing to submit proposals for a “high-quality student accommodation” block next-door to the Kagyu Samye Dzong Tibetan Buddhist Centre, in Spa Road, Bermondsey.

A two-storey building used as commercial and office space would be demolished to make way for the tower containing 206 studio bedrooms, a communal lounge, study, gym, games room, and a cinema if plans go ahead.

The building would tower over the Grade-II listed centre, built as Southwark’s first public library in 1892, and the Buddhists fear it would block out their light and destroy the peacefulness needed for meditation.

Lama Zangmo said the building would block out light coming through the windows in the meditation room, which is used daily, and that light has already been lessened by a housing development built on the other side.

“We are concerned the development would block out light, about the noise because of what we do in here, and about losing the peace and tranquillity that is necessary for having a Buddhist centre in the heart of a busy community,” said Lama Zangmo,

“I think what’s important is that we are not against development – but it is the actual size and scale of it that we are against and we really worry about the closeness to the building and the density and overdevelopment.”

“I think for people that live in London, a place like this is very important because there are huge pressures on people; a lot of people

come here and seek refuge because of the peace.”

The Buddhist centre also has 60 solar panels on its roof, which it uses to produce green electricity, and Lama Zangmo fears they will produce less if the development goes ahead.

Student Urban Living Bermondsey Ltd and CKC Properties’ plan to submit their proposals to the council in August 2017.

If planning permission is granted, they expect to begin building in spring 2018 and complete the development by summer 2019.

Ben Johnson, Liberal Democrat councillor for Grange Ward, told the News: “This proposed development of more than 200 luxury flats for wealthy overseas students does nothing to help the housing crisis, will be totally unaffordable for local residents, and will tower over the neighbouring Grade II-listed old library.

“This site should be used for affordable homes for local residents and should be on a much smaller scale so as not to harm the important work of the Buddhist centre, a unique local amenity that is well used and

much loved by residents.”

A spokesperson for CKC Properties and Student Urban Living Bermondsey Ltd said: “Unfortunately, there is a lack of purpose-built student accommodation in a city that boasts some of the best universities in the world, of which six are located within a five-mile radius of Bermondsey.

“It is only right and proper for developers to fund affordable housing through the provision of new developments – that’s why we are working with Southwark Council to agree an appropriate affordable housing package.

“Along with our discussions over several months with Southwark on the design detail of the project, we have also been in consultation with the local community.

“The feedback received has been used positively to reduce the scale, massing and position of the proposals, to better respond to the views of our neighbours, and reduce the height of the building.

“Providing purpose-built student accommodation enables the effective management of students and also releases homes of multiple occupancy (HMOs) for local families.

“Our student management plan will contain strict clauses on behaviour and the proposals have been designed to prevent noise escaping the proposed building “To minimise disruption during construction, the Considerate Constructors Scheme will also be adhered to.”

Key Stage 2 pupils from Redriff Primary School’s special education needs unit, the Boathouse, took part in the London & South East Primary

Finals of the Panathlon Competition.

The children battled it out against 21 other schools at the Copper Box Arena to be crowned third after winning the Southwark Borough competition earlier this year.

A spokesperson for the school said the children showed “great determination, mental strength and support to each other” to come away with bronze medals, a certificate, and a trophy.

A BERMONDSEY pub could be turned into flats if plans are given the go ahead.

Two separate planning applications have been submitted to the council for The Winnicott – formerly known as the Old Justice.

The three-storey building in Bermondsey Wall East currently houses the pub, which is no longer in use, on the ground and basement floors, with flats on the floors above.

One set of plans proposes to change the use of the ground floor and

basement to residential to accommodate two self-contained flats at ground level, but leave the basement untouched. Another plan, put forward by the same applicant, proposed to build a two-storey extension for a twobedroom flat.

Both proposals have been drawn up

by Milan Babic Architects, on behalf of Hamna Wakaf Ltd – the same developer that bought the China Hall, in Lower Road.

The Little Crown plan for ‘flats and retail space’

A FORMER Rotherhithe pub could be turned into flats and retail space if plans are given the go ahead.

The Little Crown, which stands empty on the corner of Albion Street and Renforth Street, could be demolished to make way for a fourstorey building.

The development would see a retail unit across the basement and ground floor, and four one-bedroom and three two-bedroom flats on the upper floors, if plans are approved by the council.

A pair of the two-bedroom flats would be split across three floors, with private outdoor patio areas at basement floor level.

Two of the one-bedroom flats and one of the two-bedroom flats would have private balconies, and the two one-bedroom flats on the top floor would have private roof terraces.

The entrance to the flats would be

from Renforth Street “to maintain full retail frontage on Albion Street,” Proun Architects said in a design and access statement.

Earlier this year, plans were submitted to demolish the vacant Albion pub and replace it with eight self-contained flats and a commercial space.

Two separate plans were also submitted on behalf of the council to include the former civic centre and some land belonging to Albion Primary School, both in Albion Street.

At the time, Southwark Liberal Democrats called on chief executive Eleanor Kelly to halt the planning applications and consider the future of the street and Rotherhithe community as a whole.

STUDENTS, STAFF and parents of The Charter School East Dulwich, are celebrating receiving a grant of over £9,000 to improve their temporary home.

The grant came after a decision was made that it was a necessity to improve the school’s facilities, with the school playground highlighted as a particular area for refurbishment, due to an uninviting and barren image.

The Charter School East Dulwich is a new secondary school that serves the communities of South Camberwell and East Dulwich. The school received the grant from the Big Lottery Awards for All Scheme.

The school opened its temporary premises at Southampton Way in September 2016.

committed parents Beth Follini and Natasha Soares worked together to draft the bid to Big Lottery supported by the school.

It took several months of writing and re-writing, but the bid was submitted and the news came that the bid had been successful and the grant was awarded to the school.

The grant will fund a range of sports equipment, a container garden and an outdoor mural that can all be moved to the school’s permanent site on East Dulwich Grove.

Parent and local gardener Ed Davies is helping lead the design of the new container garden alongside students in the newly formed Gardening Club who will work to maintain the garden year-

round. A local artist will work with the children over six days on the design of the mural which will brighten up the whole playground.

The school is due to move to its permanent on the grounds of the current Dulwich Community Hospital in December 2018 with the products of the

grant moving with them.

The school’s headteacher, Alex Crossman, explained how beneficial the grant would be to the school: “In these times of ever-restrictive school funding it is increasingly important for us to be able to access additional funds for areas deemed to be outside the core

curriculum.”

He went on to say: “We are instilling in our students an appreciation for their environment, their communities and an understanding that taking responsibility for their own healthy, active lifestyle is vital. We are grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for supporting us in this cause.”

Resident fear as cladding on new developments failed fire safety tests

CLADDING COVERING 20 per cent of a Bermondsey housing development has failed fire safety tests.

It has been revealed that a sample of cladding from Notting Hill Housing’s Exchange development – also known as Grange Walk – was sent to be checked by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) but failed tests.

There are five buildings in the development – Costermonger, Whitmore, Ockham, Parchment, and Hepburn – all of which have a “limited amount” of the cladding.

The housing association has contacted London Fire Brigade to arrange an inspection and a 24-hour fire watch by trained security officers is in place at the buildings.

“A core sample of cladding from Grange Walk in Southwark was sent to the Building Research Establishment (BRE) for testing and they confirmed on Monday [July 10] that the sample failed the test,” a Notting Hill Housing spokesman told the News.

“This cladding makes up a minimal part of Grange Walk’s frontage, around 20 per cent, but nevertheless we are taking measures to ensure the safety and peace of mind of our residents.

“We have notified the London Fire Brigade to arrange an inspection, we are checking the current Fire Risk Assessment is valid and any recommendations arising from it have been completed and that all fire-stopping measures are intact and working correctly.

“In addition, we have arranged a 24-hour fire watch by trained security officers, which will complement our existing on-site concierge services.

“Grange Walk was our only development within Southwark where BRE testing was required.”

Hyde Housing Group’s Bolanachi

Building, in Spa Road/Enid Street, also failed fire safety tests, the News revealed last week.

Tests revealed cladding contained aluminium composite material – which was called into question following the fatal Grenfell Tower fire, in Kensington.

Hyde also awaited results of cladding tests for five other buildings in Southwark.

Samples of cladding on Eyott House, Artesian House, Davoll House, Hicks House and Prospect House, all in Bermondsey Spa, were also been sent for testing.

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Liberal Democrat Council Group, said: “Last week, I attended a meeting of residents of Bermondsey Spa, including the Bolanachi Building, which is managed by Hyde Housing.

“Residents were very worried about the tests which have shown that their cladding contains the same material (ACM) as Grenfell.

“Hyde Housing were at the meeting and committed to taking urgent action, but residents had a number of questions around timescales, alarms, 'stay put advice', escape lighting and fire doors.

“We agreed that Hyde would share the fire risk assessments with residents and that we would continue to meet until all the questions were resolved.

“Residents were, understandably, anxious and Liberal Democrat councillors will continue to fight their corner.”

Ben Johnson, Liberal Democrat councillor for Grange ward, added: “I share the shock and distress of local residents that their cladding has failed fire safety tests.

“The Government should pay for this fire safety work, which has affected blocks across the country, but in the absence of any national funding Hyde and Notting Hill must cover the costs of these essential works – and not pass them on to leaseholders.”

FIRE SAFETY tests have revealed cladding on a council low-rise block would set alight under “intense fire situations”.

Tests carried out on cladding panels from Medina House, in Peckham Rye, have revealed that it would withstand a “single-flame heat source” – but would rapidly ignite or spread if exposed to “intense radiant heat”.

Bureau Vistas, who carried out the tests, said in a report that the cladding panels “had the potential to ignite and sustain spread of burning under intense fire situations that might be expected to occur from a fully-developed compartment fire venting through a window”.

The insulation foam from the cladding also ignited when directly exposed to a flame during tests – but rapidly self-extinguished once the flame source was removed.

The foam did not ignite when contained within the panel and the panel was exposed to a single-flame heat source.

Cladding from Canute Gardens, in Rotherhithe, did not ignite or spread flame under both applied singleflame source and intense radiant heat conditions.

Bureau Vistas advised that cladding from Medina House “might not be considered compliant with the council announced an independent review of all its fire safety policies, and how it conducts fire risk assessments.

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrat Council Group, added: "Liberal Democrat councillors are concerned that there are questions over a number of blocks in the borough and the council must act urgently and transparently.

“Residents need to see all the fire risk assessments for their blocks and enquiries about cladding, cracks, gas pipes or anything else need to be investigated immediately."

The council also sent cladding samples from its Rotherhithe Old Road and Jarman House buildings.

When asked by the News whether they had received results of tests for the two buildings, the council did not respond.

Ofsted gives Dulwich school top marks across all areas

A DULWICH secondary school has been rated ‘outstanding’ in all areas – after a visit from nine Ofsted inspectors.

Kingsdale Foundation School, a mixed secondary school in Alleyn Park, was rated ‘good’ during a previous inspection in 2012 but impressed inspectors to be rated ‘outstanding’ across the board this month.

The school was praised for its “culture of high ambition and expectation that forms the backbone for successes” and its “harmonious environment”.

“Pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding because of the care and attention that staff pay to making pupils’ time in school productive and safe,” inspectors said in their report.

“Pupils’ behaviour is outstanding because their day-to-day conduct usually matches staff’s high expectations.

“The most able and disadvantaged pupils make strong progress because teachers’ planning anticipates their needs.”

The only area inspectors said could be improved on was to ensure that “low-prior-attaining pupils make the same strong progress as their peers consistently across the curriculum”.

Headteacher Steve Morrison said the Kingsdale community had worked with “dedication and passion” to achieve the “rare tribute” from Ofsted.

“It is not every day a school is visited by nine Ofsted Inspectors including four of Her Majesty’s Inspectors,” he said.

“Since our previous inspection we had become the highest attaining school in Southwark according to the Government’s tough new more rigorous Attainment 8 measure and one of the top achieving non-selective schools in the country.

“At the same time, we maintained our status as one of the most popular and oversubscribed schools in south London.

“We believe in our students, staff and parents but we also realised this was no guarantee of success under the increasingly challenging Ofsted framework.

“Therefore, it was with great pleasure we received Ofsted’s perfect six ‘outstanding’ judgements across all Key Stages.

“We believe it is a confirmation that we are on the right path and that there is still a place in our secondary education system for individuality, creativity, choice, imagination and innovation.”

A SHAKEUP of acute dementia care in south east London’s hospitals could see all services moved out to Bromley.

PECKHAM: Firefighters have said a small blaze at the Bussey Building on Tuesday night was easily controlled thanks to its sprinkler system.

The London Fire Brigade were called to an “accidental” fire in an artist’s studio on the fourth floor at 1:46am.

Four people evacuated the block when its alarm and sprinkler system became live.

A Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies and business owners to install them.

“In this case the sprinklers successfully contained the fire until crews arrived.

“As well as limiting fire damage and being potentially lifesaving devices, sprinklers and other fire suppression systems help with business continuity by minimising disruption and allowing businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible.”

Fire crews from Peckham, New Cross, Old Kent Road, Greenwich, Deptford and Brixton fire stations attended.

Maudsley Hospital bosses have suggested moving all acute dementia care to a new “specialist” ward in Chelsham House – part of Bethlem Royal Hospital – whose closest train station is West Wickham.

All care for “functional” disorders (such as psychotic, mood and anxiety) would instead be focused in Maudsley Hospital in Camberwell, and the Hayworth Ward of University Hospital Lewisham in Ladywell.

The proposals were explained in an agenda published for Southwark Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee’s most recent meeting, on July 13.

It said the change was needed because: “A mix of patients with different disorders… can be distressing for patients (e.g. a patient with severe anxiety/depression may be distressed by being on a ward with people with severe dementia and agitation).”

It also said splitting up the two types of mental health care would enable staff to “specialise and become highly skilled in either dementia or functional illness care”.

The total number of beds available in each of the three hospitals would remain at 54, the report said.

But the proposals were rounded on by Tom White, health spokesman for Southwark Pensioners Action Group, called the proposals “an excuse to cut services”.

“It is important for these patients to have family support, so it would be

“Patient and carer preferences will continue to be accommodated by staff and there is a hospital bus between the Maudsley Hospital and the Bethlem Royal Hospital that carers can use at no cost.”

The spokesman said that King’s A&E is equipped specialist psychiatric liaison teams and that “a joined-up, preventative approach for physical and mental health, helps to ensure the needs of those experiencing mental distress are met”.

The socials will offer free transport, with a free lunch and film screening for all guests.

A fire spokesman told the News nobody had to be cut from the car, but paramedics were at the scene.

“A car that failed to stop for police collided with another car flipping it on its roof,” said a police spokesman.

“Neither driver was seriously injured and treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service.

“The driver of the car that failed to stop for police – a woman in her 20s – was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, no insurance and driving not in accordance with a licence.”

The person was bailed until early August.

THE COMMUNITY enjoyed a day of live music, stalls and free children’s rides at this year’s Rotherhithe Festival.

Barry Duckett, who helped organise Saturday’s event, said it had a “really good turnout”.

“People said it was the best festival that they had been to this year,” said the Canada Estate tenants’ and residents’ association chair.

“The free children's rides were packed all day and all our feedback was positive.

“The working model depicting the

new bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf attracted a lot of attention.”

Mr Duckett thanked Frank Statesboro, the Steve Morrison Band, Robin Bibi, and Bill n Rickey for performing on the day, and the Bermondsey Community Kitchen for feeding the crowd.

He also thanked British Land, Rotherhithe Community Council, Southwark Events, St Olave and Bermondsey United Charities, Rotherhithe Consolidated Charities, North Southwark Environmental Trust, and Keepmoat for their sponsorship of the festival this year.

‘Jenga Tower’ decision due BLACKFRIARS

53-storey skyscraper would have 227 homes

A DECISION on whether to give the go-ahead to proposals to build a 53-storey skyscraper in Blackfriars was set to be made yesterday.

A planning committee was expected to vote on whether to wave through plans for a 183.5-metre high residential block – dubbed the ‘Jenga Tower’ – at the meeting on Wednesday, July 19.

Concerns were raised by Historic England, which claimed the giant tower, expected to be built in Stamford Street, could affect views of St James’s Park.

In a letter to the council, Michael Dunn, Historic England’s principal inspector of historic buildings and areas, said they should “consider very carefully the extent of this harm, and whether it is necessary to deliver the potential public benefits”.

“The increased height of the residential tower, however, means that this building will have a

significant impact on London’s historic environment including the Grade I-registered St James’s Park when viewed from the bridge,” he wrote.

The planning committee was set to decide on proposals put forward by Black Pearl Ltd and Wilkinson Eyre for the six-building development which would include both private and affordable housing, a hotel, office space, and a music venue.

A total of 227 private homes would be provided within the Jenga Tower building, which would also house retail units at ground and mezzanine level.

Level one to eight of the tower would provide bedrooms for the neighbouring hotel building, with the main residential accommodation starting from level nine onward.

A hotel building would provide 548 rooms and a fifteen-storey block would contain 61 affordable homes, if plans go ahead.

The proposed music venue/office building would adjoin the Mad Hatter Hotel.

Events mark Ada’s 150th anniversary

BERMONDSEY: Events are taking place at St James Church in Bermondsey to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ada Salter.

A community fun day is being held at the church on Saturday, July 22 to raise funds for a new ‘joyslide’ for children and is being run by the United Saviours Charity, as part of the events.

The fun day will raise funds for the new slide; the previous one existed in the church for fifty years before it became unusable. The fun day will run from 12 noon until 4pm.

Ada Salter, who with her MP husband Alfred campaigned to improve Bermondsey, was a local councillor and one of the original people to raise funds for the slide. The slide was the brainchild of Arthur Carr, chairman and managing director of the Peek Frean Biscuit Factory.

The weekend will be celebrated with events on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there will be the opening of an exhibition of photographs and memorabilia at noon, which will showcase some of Ada’s work on beatification, especially parks flowers and playgrounds. A talk will also be held

by Gary Magold at 12:30pm, founder of the Peek Frean Museum. The Bermondsey & Rotherhithe History Society Event will take place at 6:30pm and will include a talk about the ministry of Revd G R Balleine, ‘The Vicar of Mirth’ and friend of the Salters.

There will also be a commemorative church service held on Sunday, July 23 at 10:30am.

EIGHT ASPIRING poets from a school in Elephant and Castle have flown to San Francisco, California, to take part in a weeklong series of Slam Poetry events.

The team from Globe Academy is one of two groups from England who

will compete in the international event, and put their rhymes to the test against young wordsmiths from schools around the world.

Once they arrive, the excited fifteen and sixteen-year-olds will find themselves performing to crowds in venues as varied as churches, to theatres, to basketball stadiums.

Slam poetry was described by one of

the youngsters, Halil Es, as being “theatrical” and with “emphasis on performance”. Halil said that Slam poetry happens competitively, and each individual or team is judged by a panel of judges.

Aaron O’Neil said that for him and his peers, their poetry was a way of delving into subjects that are otherwise difficult to express, such as

“family issues” “relationships” and issues within the community such as “gang violence” and “inequality”.

Shekeem O’Connor said it “releases your creativity” and was an important was to relieve stress.

Their teacher Eliezer Koramoa credits the teenagers’ interest in poetry with a new-found awareness of local politics and societal issues, both in the

UK and abroad.

Another of Globe’s slam poets, Tatiana Walker, said: “We also going to be doing a lot of community work.

We’re going to be helping at a homeless shelter, and doing some community gardening.”

The team will return to London after seven days in the west coast state, having left on Monday.

Walworth post office to stay open as franchisee found WALWORTH

THE POST Office has confirmed that a franchise partner has been found for its Walworth Road branch.

Locals have waited since January 2016 to learn what would happen to their Crown branch, which the company previously said could close if a franchisee wasn’t found.

But the Post Office released a statement last week saying that a company named OM SAI Enterprises (London) Ltd will operate the branch. It hopes to refurbish the unit at 234 Walworth Road and have it reopen in November.

A Post Office spokeswoman was unable to give any further detail about the new franchisee, but described them as an “independent” who will sell “gifts and stationery alongside the Post Office”.

The company’s statement said the change was needed to “ensure the branch is commercially viable into the future and therefore protect Post Office services”.

THE ROYAL Mail has confirmed its East Dulwich sorting office will close in January, and operations will be moved to Highshore Road in Peckham.

The decision to close the Silvester Road branch, and the building to be sold, came after months of campaigning from locals, Labour Party members and the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

The company has sought to assure residents that their door-to-door postal services will not be affected, and no jobs will be lost.

But Steve Beadle, CWU rep for south east London, told the News it was a

The Post Office has also opened a public consultation to seek residents’ feedback on its plans.

AN EAST Dulwich primary school teacher felt “humbled” after winning Classic FM’s Primary School Music Teacher Award.

A £30MILLION experimental medicine centre – where experts will hope to make breakthroughs against diseases such as cancer – is to open at Guy’s Hospital.

Robert Parton, who teaches at Goose Green Primary School in East Dulwich, was shortlisted for the award after being nominated by a parent.

The award was presented to him on July 11 by Classic FM presenter Myleene Klass, after he was picked by a panel of expert judges.

Parton joined the school ten years ago, and has spent the last eight years as its head of music.

He said: “I felt very humbled when the parents of Goose Green Primary School nominated me for this award.

“I have been fortunate to be able to work in a school that values the arts so highly and support the weird and wacky ideas I have put to them over the years. A huge thanks to all who have made it possible.”

Colourful tale - Herne Hill mums create kids’ book about animals that live in Brockwell Park

TWO HERNE Hill mums have published their first children’s book, which tells little ones all about the curious creatures and wildlife to be found Brockwell Park.

Lucy Reynolds (writer) and Jenna Herman (illustrator) have released Parrots Don’t Live in the City under their newly-created publishing company, Doodles and Scribbles.

Lucy, 38, said it was inspired by the number of parrots you see all over London, and her surprise at the first time she ever saw one in Brockwell Park.

“Brockwell is full of surprises,” she said. “My husband wouldn’t even look into the trees when I told him I had seen one. He didn’t believe me.”

Lucy then started a theme of writing about animals that are invasive species, which you wouldn’t expect to find in London. “I started to think,

even in the really dirty parts of the city you find all sorts of really beautiful animals.

“We want to encourage children to appreciate this too. So our hide-andseek books are about searching for animals that wouldn’t usually live in the city, whilst stopping to notice

nature in local nooks and crannies.”

She said Parrots Don’t Live in the City is written in rhyming couples, which are ideal for the linguistic development of children aged about six.

For the next three seasons, from

autumn to spring, Lucy and Jenna plan on publishing three more rhyming books: one on hedgehogs; foxes; and another invasive species, the Mitten Crab, which are found in the Thames, despite being native to China.

“Jenna and I have been friends for 20 years and have always had this pipedream,” Lucy added. “But when you’re selfpublishing you’ve got to do everything: the paper, the printing, the promotion. It’s been a bit of a learning curve.”

Parrots Don’t Live in the City is available from local bookshops, including Kennington Waterstones, Herne Hill Books, Clapham Books, Village Books and Dulwich Books.

World-leading academics and clinicians will use the advanced therapies centre to develop experimental treatments in the fight against diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

The centre, which will be based on floors ten and fourteen of Guy’s Tower, will give experts access to experimental medicine research facilities and the ability to manufacture drugs.

It will be developed by King’s College London in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre – based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College – and is expected to open in 2018.

The centre has been made possible by £10,164,789 worth of funding from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund, and £20million from private sector and non-profit organisations.

Professor Sir Robert Lechler, senior vice president and provost (health) of King’s College London and executive director of King's Health Partners Academic Health Science Centre, said: “Advanced therapies offer enormous promise for patients suffering from severe and incurable conditions.

“This new centre will provide our world-leading scientists with the facilities they need to make breakthroughs in the global fight against a wide range of diseases.”

Amanda Pritchard, chief executive of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, added: “The new advanced therapies centre, along with the facilities and expertise of our NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, will enable our clinical teams and their academic colleagues to lead the search for new and better personalised treatments for patients with conditions such as cancer and diabetes.”

In addition to the UKRPIF funding, the centre also received £20million of support from GSK, Cellectis, the Innovate UK Cell & Gene Therapy Catapult, and the Charité Research Organisation.

OLLOWING THE tragic fire in Grenfell Tower, in which at least 80 people have lost their lives, families who live in other high-rise blocks want to know that they are safe in their homes.

There are 174 tower blocks in Southwark – 54 of which are in my constituency Camberwell and Peckham. I was very concerned by the BBC London report on 11 July which raised issues of cracks between flats and fire defects in the 4 blocks on the Ledbury Estate and I am in regular contact with Ledbury tenants’ association and Southwark Council. The council have assured me that they have taken expert advice and both they and the Fire Brigade are confident it is safe for residents to remain in their flats but it is clear urgent safety inspections must continue across the borough.

Since the Lakanal House fire in 2009 in which 6 people tragically lost their lives Southwark Council has prioritised fire safety and spent £62 million on fire risk assessment and fire safety works for council homes. But following the Grenfell Tower fire it is imperative that the council carries out further fire safety checks and improvements, assesses all cladding on buildings and fits sprinklers in tower blocks. These works could cost about £100 million.

Southwark Council has two key legal duties: one is ensuring people are safe, the other is balancing the books financially. They must be able to do the first without jeopardising the second. But since the Tories took over in 2010 Southwark Council’s budget has been cut by almost half.

The cost of additional fire safety work should not be done at the expense of muchneeded improvement works to kitchens and bathrooms, which are eagerly awaited by tenants. As Southwark MPs Helen Hayes, Neil Coyle and I have written to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid to seek confirmation from the government that they will: • Cover the costs of any additional fire safety works in Southwark, including fitting sprinklers in tower blocks.

• Not charge leaseholders for fire safety work - approximately 20% of people in Southwark Council blocks are leaseholders.

Most leaseholders already face considerable charges for planned improvement works.

• Carry out an urgent review of fire safety regulations, as proposed by the coroner in the 2013 Lakanal House fire inquest.

• While the immediate concern is homes, other tall buildings including schools and hospitals in Southwark need to have urgent fire safety inspections too. The government must provide resources for their inspections and set out a specific timeframe.

I will continue to work with my Southwark Labour colleagues Helen Hayes MP and Neil Coyle MP to press the government to commit to providing Southwark Council with the money it needs to carry out all necessary inspections and do the work to ensure residents are safe.

IT IS not my imagination - the centre of Bermondsey, the Blue and surrounding streets, has become a race track during the recent warm weather.

I fear for the life of pedestrians, cyclists, bystanders and especially the young and the old crossing any road.

Quad bikes, scramble bikes and high powered cars are all using the streets as race tracks, all breaking the law either helmetless or exceeding the speed limit.

I cannot remember the last time I saw a Bobby on the beat and have completely lost a sense that anything can be done about these flagrant law breakers.

It is only a matter of time before someone gets killed. If it is a perpretator I, personally, will not shed a tear.

Cycle hire should extend even further

IT IS fantastic news that the cycle hire scheme has been extended south into Brixton.

We want to work with Transport for London and the South London Boroughs to make this a success and push the scheme even further south.

This will be a big help towards achieving the Mayor’s aim for 80% sustainable transport, i.e public transport, walking and cycling, and will go some way towards improving

our air quality and people’s health.

The scheme should not stop at Brixton. South London has always been poorly served by transport options. The cycle hire scheme and supporting infrastructure such as quietways and cycle lanes should, where appropriate, spread south across the whole of both Lambeth and Southwark, giving people healthier opportunities to travel and reducing the pressure on our polluted roads.

Friends of Green Dale stand firm

YOUR REPORT last week (Hamlet’s future ‘put in danger’ by council not deciding on on new stadium, Southwark News 13 July) contained a few errors which I’d like to put right.

It states that ‘the planning application remains unanswered’, but Meadow Residential’s appeal immediately put the decision into the hands of the planning inspector and out of the hands of the council. Ironically, there might have been less delay if Meadow Residential had not appealed and let the process at council level take its course.

One reason this didn’t happen, I suspect, is that the developers were pretty sure that the council would refuse the application. Indeed, the council have recently submitted their view to the planning inspector that they would have refused the application on five separate grounds: impact on Metropolitan Open Land; development on other open space; reduction in sports facilities; height, scale and massing of the residential development; and insufficient affordable housing.

The Friends of Green Dale stands by these reasons for rejecting the planning appeal.

Your report also states, ‘Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust has also raised concerns that the council may not renew its lease on the site, which is due to expire in November.’ I believe the lease in question is for the Green Dale site and not the current Champion Hill Stadium site.

Moreover it has already expired and the council and the club are currently involved in legal discussions over the future of Green Dale.

Finally, club chairman Liam Hickey

states, ‘Our rent bill is very high on the site.’ That is nothing to do with the council but is a matter between the club and Meadow Residential who, along with their partner company Greendale Property Co. Ltd, own the Champion Hill Stadium site. If Meadow Residential truly want a sustainable future for the club, it would be odd for them to do the club harm financially.

ULY IS usually humid with localized thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain. However, summer has so far been unseasonably dry – following a dry spring with lower than average rainfall.

A brief spell of torrential rain at the end of June and again in mid July headed off near drought conditions.

The workload in the garden settles into a predictable routine for the next few weeks - focussing on weeding, dead-heading, cutting grass, watering and checking for pests and diseases. In the vegetable garden successional sowing of salad leaves, beetroot and peas continues through the month.

Houseplants need more attention through July and August; move pots away from the window out of direct sun, water two to three times a week depending on the size and type of plant. Remove dead foliage and mist leaves with water occasionally, to increase humidity around the plant. African violets and other plants with downy leaves can be stood in a shallow tray and watered from beneath. Cacti and succulents require watering once or twice a week, but do not let the soil become waterlogged.

Summer borders are full of vibrant perennials and annuals as growth reaches its peak. The traditional cottage garden plants are in bloom including Delphiniums, Dianthus, Stocks, Foxgloves plus the giant Hollyhocks.

Delphiniums come in two types – either quick growing annuals or the elegant perennials; both with deep blue or mauve flowers (sometimes pink or white). They are not easy to grow, need fertile soil and support with canes to prevent stems falling over and snapping off at the base.

Dianthus (Pinks) have different varieties making them a versatile and attractive addition to the window box or garden.

They flower from June through to August and sometimes come back in early autumn. Pinks have a sweet, clove-like fragrance, thrive in town gardens, are tolerant of a range of soil conditions and cope with polluted air. There are all sorts to choose from - try the sturdier modern hybrids with a colour range of pink, white and scarlet.

Summer berries are ready to harvest; the first blackberries of the season ripened in late June - the earliest I have ever seen them around the borough; blackcurrants and blueberries join raspberries to add to the fruitful and flowery abundance of the July garden.

RAH RAH Community Theatre Company has teamed up with The Salvation Army and antitrafficking charity, Hope For Justice, to bring its production of My Mind is Free by Sam Hall to the Waterloo East Theatre and will include a guest speaker, Major Anne Read, Director of antitrafficking for The Salvation Army, writes Michael Holland...

Human trafficking is the world’s fastest growing global crime. The 2015 Global Slavery Index estimates that there are 35.8 million people enslaved in the world.

There are 1.1 million new, trafficked victims a year, 3,000 new victims a day, or a shocking 125 people per hour

The season launches in July with a series of participatory events and installations at various venues around London Bridge. Concluding with an exhibition in September and October at the Copeland Gallery in Peckham, it heralds the opening of Science Gallery London in 2018.

JAMES JARCHÉ is often considered one of the foremost British photojournalists of the twentieth century. But the man himself and his upbringing in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe have largely been forgotten.

His most iconic images include the first image of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson together, pilot Louis Blériot’s landing in Dover in 1909 after completing the first aeroplane flight over the English Channel and the 1911 Siege of Sidney Street, a gunfight in the East End. One of his most reproduced images is that of a policeman chasing naked boys at the Serpentine.

Jarché was born in Bermondsey in 1891 and spent his childhood immersed in what was at the time, a gritty and sometimes violent world around the docks and Thameside. His parents, both photographers, had emigrated from France to make their way in England – settling in Union Road, now Jamaica Road. It couldn’t have been a more perfect setting and education for the makings of a great photojournalist.

An Independent story on Jarché from 1999 writes of his pluck: ‘throwing himself with great gusto into life in this tough, volatile environment.

Encouraged by the local stevedores, he eventually became a talented wrestler.

At the age of 18 he was World Amateur Middleweight Champion.’

His father, Arnold Jarché, ran a portrait studio, but was also hired by Scotland Yard to document crime scenes. So Jimmy, as he came to be known, was exposed to the grim reality of life and death from an early age. In his 1934 autobiography, People I Have Shot, he recounted how, as a nine-yearold, a man knocked at the door of the family home late one night. The man wanted Arnold Jarché to take a photo of his mother, who had just died, for posterity.

Into the night they went – with Jimmy carrying the tripod for his father.

Fittingly gothic, Jarché recalled stepping into foggy gloom and hearing ‘the scream of the sirens of boats feeling their way to dock’.

In the man’s house, Jarché saw the dead woman lying on a table – a sheet drawn up to her chin. He was, of course, terrified, but said this first experience of photographing the dead had stood him in good stead for becoming a press photographer: ‘To begin with, it took away from me forever the fear of the sight of death, and in the second place, it put a stiffening into me..’

After this initiation, it’s no surprise Jarché began assisting his father in his photography for the police – snapping anything from a trail of footprints to corpses dragged out of the Thames. As well as a strong stomach, the work probably gave him the knack for being in the right place at the right time, which would come to serve him so well in his career.

The studio in Union Road did a roaring trade, and the family would open a total of five studios in the area between 1892 and 1908, mainly around Tower Bridge Road and Tooley Street.

Locals queued to have their portrait done: local tradesmen, factory workers from Peek Frean’s biscuits and Mazawattee Tea and ladies from the Star Music Hall in Bermondsey. As a result Jimmy’s father acquired his own celebrity status, and Jarché recalls that he didn’t need to do any marketing: ‘he

was a living advertisement’.

Jarché was accepted into St Olave’s Grammar school in Queen Elizabeth Street, Bermondsey (the school, now in Kent, had existed in the area since 1561), but was soon expelled for truancy, and sent on to a boarding school in Ramsgate. Arnold Jarché was to die soon after Jimmy’s first foray into photography, in 1901, and the studios were left to his mother to run.

It would not be long before Jarché was to be snapped up by Fleet Street, and leave Bermondsey and Rotherhithe far behind, travelling the world as a photojournalist skilled at being ‘everywhere’.

James Jarché died in 1965.

Polish off the Polish MAMUŚKA

KATE BUSH will be singing ‘Mamuśka, Mamuśka, Mamuśka yi aye’, if she ever has the good fortune to find herself in this Polish kitchen and bar, writes Michael Holland...

Admittedly the system whereby you order at the bar and collect your food from the open kitchen on the other side of the restaurant can be a little confusing, but the lovely serving staff are aware and ready to help.

The menu, in Polish with English translations, are full of dishes that you’ve never heard of, as well as some that you can see similarities with our own food. But, again, the staff are very willing to help and advise.

Mamuśka (what you call your mother-in-law if she feeds you well) serves authentic Polish food so you will find ex-pats in there getting a decent version of their mums’ cooking, but on my visits there I have seen a good mix of English and Asian customers all enjoying the offerings. And quite rightly so.

It is simple food. Hearty and filling. Mamuśka provides a good example of real Polish fare, plus Polish beer and vodka. We were determined to try dishes that were traditional to Poland rather than going for any safe options.

There are main meals to be had but we chose lots of small sharing plates in order to taste as much as possible, and this worked out very well because as they all came at the same time the three of us dived in to whatever plate was nearest.

Pierogi (Dumplings) seems to be a real favourite, so we had portions of the Goats Cheese and Spinach, and the Minced Beef. The cheese ones were extremely cheesy, and the beef variety were nicely spiced.

We had a sour cream, dill and cucumber salad, that was creamy as well as tasty; a vegetable and mayonnaise salad, chicken wings that were sticky and lovely, Placki Zemniaczane (Potato pancakes) that you could add different

It is simple food.

Mamuśka provides a good example of real Polish fare, plus Polish beer and vodka fillings, and Ryba w Occie (Pickled Fish). And all these delicacies were washed down with Zywiec, a delicious lager that seemed perfect for that role.

Between us we almost demolished everything, except all the chicken wings and pancakes, which were boxed up for us to take home, and couldn’t finish the pickled fish because it had a very strong flavour, one which I feel

you have to be led into slowly over time. Our waitress agreed it is not for the faint of heart.

It is noisy in Mamuśka, it is busy in Mamuśka, it is a place where you can sit anywhere at almost any time as it is huge and opens in the morning for breakfast.

We loved it.

We couldn’t leave without sampling the flavoured vodkas.

Nina had the cherry, a sweet little

36% proof, while I had the 50% plum, a distillation that could send rockets to the moon, but oh so nice.

The Boy had a Coke.

Mamuśka is a place that is fun, different and I think many people trying it for the first time will make return trips.

There is the added bonus of 2-for1 Happy Hour on a range of Polish beers, Vodka Slush and even wine, from 5 to 7 pm, Monday - Friday!

DULWICH HAMLET came from two goals down before losing 4-2 to Crawley Town on Tuesday night.

Ex-Hamlet player Panutche Camará scored twice for the League Two side, who had gone ahead after just three minutes through Enzio Boldewijn.

Camará doubled the lead on 30 minutes, before Dulwich pulled a goal back when Crawley goalkeeper Glenn Morris missed a cross and Dumebi Dumaka headed into an empty net.

Just before the break Dulwich equalised, with Dumaka grabbing his second of the game, the winger evading challenges before firing home past Morris.

Despite a gutsy effort from the hosts, Crawley proved too strong and added second-half goals through Camará and Matthew Harold.

Records tumble for Southwark Aquatics OFF THE back of the London Regionals in May, Southwark Aquatics enjoyed more success at the London Aquatic Centre, BWFSC Meet earlier this month.

Out of 21 clubs taking part, Southwark Aquatics – the smallest competitive swimming club in London – finished sixth in the medals table.

Twenty-one swimmers from the club took home three gold medals, nine silvers, ten bronze, as well as thirteen fourth-place finishes. There were also seven new club records.

Jessie Kullman finished second in the Top Girl Trophy, which was based on individual points.

Two of the swimmers, Sophia Hipple and Mateusz Kubica, made the next round of regional qualifying times.

After a successful season the club is setting its sights on getting swimmers to national level. The club is urging people to get involved.

“There weren’t really nerves, but I had to wait and everyone went the distance. I was ready from five o’clock but I didn’t end up boxing until 11.30.

“I was warming up and then I had to stop, and I had to warm up again.

I took my boxing kit off, then got ready to go again. I ended up warming up about three or four times.

“It was my second fight that went the distance and it was the same opponent, who has had about 150 fights.

“I went there and everything I had learned in the gym I just put it together in the ring.

“I’m used to boxing anywhere now, big or small arenas, it doesn’t bother me. I’m going to have a couple of days off and then back in the gym.

I’m hoping to be out again early September.

“It’s all up to my coach to see how much I have improved. It’s his call [on a potential future title fight].”

A FINE all-round performance by Salaar Waqar, who hit 69 and took five wickets, led Dulwich to a stunning victory by the emphatic margin of 147 runs over table leaders Esher in Division 2 of the Travelbag Surrey Championship last weekend.

CHRIS ‘2Slick’ Kongo felt his experience in the ring with Chris Eubank Jr was crucial as he won his fifth successive professional fight at the weekend.

Bermondsey’s Kongo went the distance against Lancashire’s William Warburton, who also took him all the way in his second fight as a professional.

Kongo, 24, had the benefit of sparring with Eubank Jr, who defended his IBO supermiddleweight title with a points win over veteran Arthur Abraham on Saturday night.

Chris Eubank Sr was in the ring overseeing the recent sparring session, and Kongo revealed the former middleweight and supermiddleweight world champion was impressed with what he saw.

“Getting the benefit of that experience is priceless,” Kongo said.

“He gave me some good advice and things to work on. Apart from that he said my boxing skills were beautiful

MILLWALL LOST 1-0 to Lincoln City in a pre-season friendly in Portugal last weekend.

The Lions went down to a Matt Rhead strike for the League Two new boys at their training camp in Vilamoura in central Algarve.

Lincoln grabbed the national sporting headlines last season when, like Millwall, they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup before they lost to Arsenal at the Emirates.

Millwall upped their workload in Portugal as they fine-tune preparations before their return to the Championship.

Lions boss Neil Harris again gave most of the first-team squad minutes on the pitch against an Imps side that had lost 3-1 against Benfica B a few days earlier.

Harris and Lincoln boss Danny Cowley are good friends, and the latter was pleased with his side’s performance.

“It was a significant improvement from Wednesday’s game, which we expected,” Cowley said.

“The Millwall test was very different to the Benfica game. It was more of a physical test and more realistic to what we will face once the season starts.

“Millwall are a Championship club now and have done superbly over the last two seasons under Neil Harris.

“We did really well defensively.

We were organised and kept a good shape.

“We used the ball well as well. It was undoubtedly our best performance so far in pre-season.

And it’s always nice to win 1-0 away from home!”

Morison is in the seventeenth preseason of his senior professional career, after starting out with

Northampton Town in 2001.

But he has shown no signs of slowing down and made more appearances (107) in the last two seasons than any other Millwall player.

It was Morison who was there in the 85th minute of Millwall’s 61st game of the 2016-17 season when he prodded home to secure promotion to the Championship at Wembley in May. Morison believes the modern scientific approach to fitness has helped him as he has got older, and he will be pushing himself at The Hive Stadium this weekend to ensure he is ready for Championship match action.

“You want to try to get as close to competitive match tempo as possible and put your body through those stresses and strains that you have to deal with week-in, week-out,” he said.

“I’m as fit as ever. The training is a lot different to what I’ve been used to over the years. Pre-season is easier now, it’s more scientific and managed a lot better. You feel better for it.

“I look back at when I started and the fundamental thing was run as far as you could until someone was ill or sick. That’s why you saw so many injuries.

“But football has changed, that’s why it’s quicker and everyone is a better athlete nowadays.

“For me it’s made it easier to survive. I’m in the mix with the rest of them out there, I do exactly the same as everyone else. People are at different levels, everyone does running at different times and some are better than it than others. Kris Twardek should be an Olympic athlete.”

Morison was speaking just before the squad departed for the Algarve in Portugal, and he was looking forward to a different training environment.

“It’ll be tough, but it’ll be nice to get away,” he said. “We’ll have had nearly three weeks [at Calmont Road] by the time we go. It’s a change of scenery, we’ll be here for the next ten months so it’ll be nice to train with the sun on our backs.

“That makes the training a little bit harder and we’ve got a couple of good games out there as well. We’ll get some more minutes in us and get ready for when we come back for Barnet.”

League Welling later that season, before returning to Millwall and making two appearances in the Football League Trophy in 2016-17.

A number of Millwall players on the fringes of the first-team squad are available for loan, with Harris aware that under-23 football will not aid the development of players who have already experienced firstteam action.

Meanwhile, Harry Smith has made a flying start to his career with

Swindon Town.

Centre-forward Smith, 22, joined David Flitcroft’s League Two side last week on a season-long loan.

Smith made his debut for Swindon in their friendly against Oldham last week and provided an assist for the equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

And Smith opened his account for the Robins on Monday night when he put his side in front against Salisbury after earlier missing a penalty in another 1-1 stalemate.

MILLWALL TOUCHED down in London on Wednesday after six days in the Algarve sunshine, and are back at Calmont Road preparing for the trip to Barnet on Saturday.

The squad was put through its paces in heat touching 40 degrees Celsius in Portugal, in between facing Lincoln City and a Portuguese side in friendlies.

Lions supporters who travel to The Hive Stadium this weekend could get to see another new signing in action for the club for the first time, with Conor McLaughlin in line to make an appearance.

Millwall boss Neil Harris will likely pick a strong side for the clash against the Bees, whom they defeated 4-0 in the first round of the League Cup last August.

McLaughlin’s Northern Ireland international team-mate Shane Ferguson should also make his first appearance of the summer, after he started pre-season late following his involvement in World Cup qualification in early June.

Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh joined Harris and the squad for a couple of days during their training camp, and believes the trip was a success.

the Championship after that memorable promotion-winning day at Wembley in May. This coming campaign marks the start of the first full season under CEO Steve Kavanagh, and if his first nine or so months are anything to go by then the future looks very bright for the club.

It still feels like everyone remains on a bit of a high after Wembley. There were plenty of people writing the team off halfway through the season, but Neil Harris and his squad did brilliantly well to secure Championship football once again.

Aston Villa, Sunderland, Fulham and Leeds United are amongst a long list of great away days to look forward to in the coming months.

Unfortunately, this summer hasn’t

been all positive, however. Four of our supporters were caught up in the atrocious attacks on London Bridge and Borough Market in early June and two of them have had to recover from multiple serious stab wounds.

Since that horrendous night I’ve been in regular contact with all four fans in order to make sure their every need is attended to. John Berylson, our chairman, insisted from the off that the club would do everything in its power to support them and that is what has happened. This is the Millwall family.

I’m looking forward to the upcoming Fans’ Forum, which is taking place in the Executive Lounge at The Den between 7-9pm on Tuesday, August 1.

These events are crucial as we look to continue improving communication

between the club and the fan base so I hope to see as many of you as possible there. During the past few months I’ve had plenty of ideas which I have put to different members of club staff and to the board and I hope to be able to reveal some of them that night.

On a final note, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome five new committee members to the MSC and of course Paul (Ted) Robinson, your new chairman, and his new deputy, Ayse Smith. Both are Millwall through and through and I’m sure they will each do a terrific job.

One of Eames’ players, Michael Nelson, is five years older than him, but age isn’t a worry as he sets out his ambitious plans for the club.

“Everyone keeps saying to me that I am the youngest Football League coach but to me it is just a number,” he said. “I am a very privileged person to be one of the 92 and I know there are millions of people in this country who would love to be in my seat.

“But I have not really thought about the age thing, it’s just about me doing my job as well as possible.

“I know that we are on the right track and we are in a good place.

We have a great philosophy from the under-9s upwards and we have the ambitions to match. I am embedding the principles, the culture of high standards and ensuring every detail is followed.

“The young players are stepping up and you will see more emerge this season.

“What I will say is that these players are hungrier than ever. We know the ambitions and where we can go. We will build on what we have done already and we will be working harder than ever.”

Lions track young Gunner Mavididi

MILLWALL ARE keeping tabs on young Arsenal striker Stephy Mavididi.

Mavididi, 19, hasn’t made a senior firstteam appearance for the Gunners, but impressed on a short loan spell with Charlton Athletic last season.

Mavididi played five times for Karl Robinson’s Addicks before he suffered a hamstring injury that ended his season.

Robinson admitted he would be interested in signing the attacker again this season, but Millwall’s promotion to the Championship gives them a better bargaining position.

However, Mavididi would need to weigh up his chances of gaining a regular firstteam spot with Millwall, given Lions boss Neil Harris has Steve Morison and Lee Gregory as his established first-choice pair.

Harris also signed Tom Elliott this summer from AFC Wimbledon, while Fred Onyedinma and Aiden O’Brien are options to play in a front two.

Mavididi’s talent is not in doubt, and last season he almost scored what would have been the goal of the season after running the length of the pitch and beating five players against Rochdale before seeing his shot saved.

Millwall are likely to wait until further into pre-season before deciding if they need to add another forward to their squad.

Safe standing is particularly associated with German football, with Borussia Dortmund’s ‘yellow wall’ – the 25,000capacity terrace at the Westfalenstadion – an iconic success story.

Last month, League One Shrewsbury Town applied for safe standing at Greenhous Meadow and are hoping to raise over £50,000 to install rail seats before the end of next season.

And this week, a Liverpool supporters’ group, Spirit of Shankly, announced

they would have an online vote to gauge fans’ views on the issue.

Safe standing has significant supporter backing in the UK, with the Football Supporters’ Federation campaigning for its reintroduction for a number of years.

Millwall chief executive Steve Kavanagh revealed the club are “keeping an eye” on the latest moves elsewhere.

“I looked into the safe standing situation when I was at Southend and it’s not as straightforward as just putting some new seats in,” Kavanagh said.

“It’s more complex doing the break in the stand, etc.

I understand it, even for the units that are being trialled in Scotland to be put into the stand.

“I’m aware of the issue and I am monitoring it. Obviously at the right time, if it became viable, then we would look at whether it would be viable for us.

“I don’t think that it’s something that we would look to trial, and I don’t think the authorities would be overly happy with us trialling it either.

“We will stand behind others and we are keeping an eye on it as we would do with anything that adds atmosphere in the ground and is welcomed and requested by the fans.”

The Lions want to add a centre-back and midfielder to their squad in addition to the five players that have joined on permanent deals already in the closed season.

Millwall have had a bid accepted for Jake Cooper, but have been frustrated in their attempts to progress any potential deal.

Cooper has been involved in Reading’s preparations ahead of the new season but the Royals want to sell him to raise transfer funds as boss Japp Stam plots a promotion push after reaching the play-offs last season.

Millwall could also bid again for Southend United’s Ryan Leonard.

The Lions had an offer of £350,000 turned down earlier in the summer, and Southend also recently rebuffed a bid of half a million pounds from Sheffield United for the midfielder.

Millwall could have an advantage over the Blades in the battle to land the player, with former Southend CEO Steve Kavanagh and Leonard’s ex-team-mate Adam Barrett now with the Lions.

And Kavanagh revealed they are pressing ahead with attempts to sign Cooper.

“We’re still hopeful of getting a deal done but because it’s taking so long we’re also exploring other options to make sure that we get the player that we want.

“Jake was one on the list. Yes, we’d like to get it done, but if that’s not possible we’ll have to move on.”
