ROTHERHITHE POLICE have issued a warning to motorists, after reports of thieves targeting vehicles to

strip out the catalytic converters - which contain rare and valuable metals.

Gangs have been using hydraulic equipment to lift up cars to cut out the catalytic converter, often in broad daylight, said officers.

PUPILS AT a Rotherhithe primary school will be welcoming an unusual classmate next year – Luna the golden retriever poodle cross.

Luna will be joining Redriff Primary School on Salter Road next year to work as a therapy dog for pupils who have autism.

The one-year-old pooch is currently undergoing puppy training before starting her role – and visits the school three times a week to get used to the children and surroundings.

Jack Gibbs, Luna’s owner and assistant head-teacher at Redriff Primary, said: “At the moment Luna visits the school three times a week allowing her to get familiar with the children and the school’s surroundings.

“She lives with me at home when she is not working. While she is here she goes on walks with children and is being trained to stand, sit and fetch. Her training to be a therapy dog will start in a few months’ time where she will be trained by professionals to gear her up to support the children through various activities.”

Therapy dogs are trained to have a calming effect and can help children with their social skills.

Luna, the first therapy dog for the school, will undergo training with a charity that specialises in training dogs to work in schools.

Mr Gibbs added: “We hope that Luna is able to be a loving companion for the children and encourage them emotionally, physically and socially. She will help the children reach their full potential.”

Kate gets behind Evelina

THE DUCHESS of Cambridge, Kate, has become the new patron of the Evelina Children’s Hospital after a visit there last week.

The Duchess visited the hospital, which provides community services in Southwark and Lambeth, last Tuesday, December 11, alongside her husband Prince

William, to learn about the hospital’s specialist services for children with rare conditions.

The Royal Highnesses’ patronage of the hospital will allow her to champion the medical professionals working on the frontline of children’s healthcare, as well as shining a light on the vitally important work the hospital does for young kids.

The hospital, which is due to celebrate its 150 birthday next year, is part of the Guy’s and St Thomas’

trust, of which the Queen is patron.

The royal visit comes after a ‘children’s takeover’ of the hospital on November 23, which included pupils at Sacred Heart High School in Camberwell.

Around twenty young people took part in the Takeover Challenge, a national event to give children the chance to shadow jobs.

It also included a takeover of the hospital’s radio station, with youngsters playing songs and interviewing staff.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

A Dungeons and Dragons cafe?

Stranger Things have happened

A BOARD game café for fans of Dungeons and Dragons has opened in Bermondsey to help combat the ‘loneliness epidemic’ felt by young people.

The fantasy board game was once the pastime of social outcasts and maligned as a gateway to devil worship in the Satanic Panic of the 1980s.

But after a recent renaissance with celebrity gamers and an appearance in TV show Stranger Things, lonely young people are now using formerly nerdy games to widen their social circles.

An Office for National Statistics survey this year found sixteen to 24year-olds were the loneliest age group, with one in ten young adults saying they are often or always lonely, compared to just three per cent of those aged 65 to 74.

But now thousands are finding friends among fellow orcs, elves, goblins and magicians. The London Meetup Group for Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) consisted of just a dozen people once a week in 2009, but today has more than 5,500 members.

Wil St John, 25, says he is doing his bit by opening a new board game cafe on Great Dover Street, designed to be a hub for young people to make new friends over a beer, pizza, and fantasy tabletop games.

Bad Moon Cafe, which caters specifically for games like Dungeons and Dragons, is looking to attract new young gamers eschewing the old basement-dwelling stereotypes.

Named after a tribe of Orcs in a fantasy game, the café is packed with 6ft by 4ft tables, custom-made for

gaming with dice trays and a mouse mat lining designed for dice rolling and card dealing.

The cafe opened its doors on December 15, serving local craft beers, wine, hipster coffees and artisan pizza in an attempt to lure the new wave of fantasy fans.

“We want to open up board gaming to everyone, there’s a growing number of people who enjoy these games but don’t want to sit in a smelly, poorly ventilated place only

selling fun-size Mars bars and bags of Frazzles,” said St John.

“It’s increasingly easy to find yourself isolated, falling between the cracks of the different social groups that already exist around you,’ said Physics teacher Andrew Moore, 24, who took up Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) when he found himself alone in London after moving to the capital for a job.

‘I had no university friends, a big age gap with colleagues who all had

families or other priorities, and a really small starting salary to work with.’

After joining a D&D group, Moore said he found making friends came much more easily.

‘It felt like a chance to be creative, spurred on by others who’d reward ingenuity or character development, for as cheap as a group pizza and some cokes.’

St John says it was sharing his interest in Warhammer that helped him tackle loneliness that came from his social anxiety: “I would actively avoid any situation I wasn’t familiar with, including meeting strangers.

“But the fact that I shared a common interest with these people meant I got lost in our games and felt completely relaxed,” he said.

He now hopes to create a community at Bad Moon Café: “Our aim has always been to create the de facto best place to play these games in London,” he told the News.

A MOTORCYCLIST, who died after a collision cyclist with a white van in Sutton has been named as Jon Goudie, from Kennington.

The twenty-year-old collided with the van and some parked vehicles on Westmead Road at around 8pm on Thursday, December 6 and died at the scene.

Bar opens for fans

DULWICH HAMLET FC has fitted out its new bar with £3.50 pints, pool table, and football shown on TV seven days a week.

As much as the club loves its locals including the East Dulwich Tavern - it also wants a space of its own as a community hub for Hamlet and football fans.

On top of £3.50 pints, and house wine and spirits, the club bar will also stock local beers from Brick, Fourpure, Canopy, Gipsy Hill and Southy breweries - and you can get food delivered to eat in.

Club director Tom Cullen told the News: "It is going to be a place where we can watch the football and enjoy local beer - come check it out.”

A 45-year-old male van driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and causing death by careless driving.

He was taken into custody and has now been released under investigation.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

POLICE ON Tuesday said they were “increasingly concerned” for the safety of a missing teenaged girl last seen in Surrey Quays on Saturday evening (December 15).

Tyra Thomas Brown, 13, from Lambeth, was last spotted at around 5.20pm in Surrey Quays heading in the direction of Canada Water.

She is described as about 5ft 3ins tall, of slim build and with black braided hair.

At the time of her disappearance she was wearing a long black coat, jeans with a stripe down the side and was carrying a black bag with a gold chain-like handle.

She is known to take trains and buses, including night buses, all over London, said Lambeth police.

Officers asked for the public’s help to track down missing Tyra and urged

anyone with information to get into contact immediately.

A MAN who allegedly threatened another traveller with a knife at Herne Hill station was arrested in hospital on Monday, after sustaining a stab wound as he fled the scene.

British Transport Police officers were called to Herne Hill station at 6.20pm on Monday, December 17, following reports that a man had been threatened with a knife.

The suspect left the station and was

later arrested in hospital on suspicion of attempted GBH and possession of an offensive weapon.

A spokesperson said: “The suspect left the station and in the process sustained an injury consistent with a stab wound.”

Officers said no one else was being sought in connection with the injury and the knife has been found at the scene.

Council reviewed process on temporary accommodation after Ombudsman ruling

THE LOCAL Government Ombudsman has upheld a complaint against Southwark Council after finding it was at fault for not formally offering a resident temporary accommodation.

The resident, named as Ms B, had lodged a complaint with the watchdog alleging it had not allocated her proper temporary accommodation, and had not assessed her housing priority and needs properly.

The Southwark resident had asked for temporary accommodation in August 2017 after her mother asked her to leave her house along with her adult son.

She rejected two offers over the phone as not being suitable for her medical needs, but the ombudsman ruled the council should have made a formal written offer.

The council had made her two offers of temporary accommodation over the telephone but were unable to provide evidence of the offers to the ombudsman, it said.

However, the ombudsman did not find

any fault in how the council had assessed her housing needs or her housing priority.

In a report published last week, an inspector for the local government watchdog said: “There was fault by the Council in not making a formal offer of temporary accommodation to Ms B. “The Council will, within a month of this decision, apologise and make an offer of temporary accommodation to Ms B.” The ombudsman rejected the complainant’s claims that she was living in statutorily overcrowded conditions, finding the council was right to assess the living room of her mother’s house as counting towards the number of people the property can accommodate.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing and modernisation, said: “The council made the right decision in its assessment of the needs of this person, but we were unable to provide the evidence of the offers we made to the ombudsman.

“We always strive for excellent customer service; this process has been reviewed and we will ensure the issues raised are addressed in future.”

Southwark is still the best recycler in inner London

SOUTHWARK IS still the best recycler in inner London, according to new government report published last week.

TFL HAS announced that it intends to start work on a major segregated cycle route – Cycle Superhighway 4 – next summer.

The route will run from Tower Bridge to Greenwich, including track on Tooley Street, Jamaica Road, Evelyn Street and Creek Road.

Alongside the two-way 4km track the work will involve a “complete overhaul” of Rotherhithe roundabout and five new pedestrian crossings.

The designs also include plans for “new traffic movements” at the junction of Southwark Park Road and Jamaica Road, which TfL said it would consult on next year.

A further consultation in partnership with Southwark Council on detailed proposals for the Lower Road section of the superhighway will take place in spring 2019, the agency said.

Construction of the Lower Road route of CS4 could start in 2020 depending on the results of the consultation.

Will Norman, London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, said: “I am really pleased that the construction of Cycle Superhighway 4 will get underway in the summer.

“The overwhelming support during the public consultation shows there is great demand for a safe segregated route, which will help enable more people to cycle.”

A public consultation on the CS4 proposals found that 83% of respondents backed the scheme.

Mr Norman added: “Pedestrians will also benefit from new and improved crossings, enabling more people to

Southwark is now seventeenth in the whole London league, which the council says is a ‘huge achievement’ given the borough’s number of high rise blocks, which make collection trickier.

The 50 pluses enjoyed a three-course meal with all the trimmings and a twenty prize strong raffle and rock and roll disco to dance the afternoon away, with special guest Peter John, Southwark Council’s leader, making an appearance.

The Camberwell-based centre was set up more than 30 years ago to support OAPs in the area and help them lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

Director Cathy Deplessis said: “We provide a range of activities for anyone in Southwark over the age of fifty, from line dancing, to computer training, trips to the seaside and much more.”

LAST WEEK we featured an article on a Walworth dad, who for the past eighteen years has decked his home with spectacular Christmas lights to raise money for the charity that saved his son’s life.

Princely meal brings good cheer

THE PRINCE Regent in Herne Hill is the latest watering hole to join a campaign to help older people feel part of their local community this Christmas.

Landlord Felix Pearce and his staff at the Dulwich Road pub joined fifteen guests over the age of 60 and volunteers from charity Link Age Southwark for a Christmas lunch.

The event was part of Heineken’s Brewing Good Cheer Campaign, which aims to get people who are lonely or isolated together and having fun by hosting free pub lunches.

The guests enjoyed a three-course festive lunch, choosing from Christmas turkey with all the trimmings, beef bourguignon to coq au vin, followed by chocolate brownie with pistachio ice cream, sticky toffee pudding or crème brûlée.

The charity was set up 25 years ago to help tackle loneliness among older people. It now has 400 volunteers who befriend over-sixties with an hour’s chat each week and also hosts activities from singing, games and crafts across Southwark.

Remembering loved ones at Christmas service ALBIN’S ANNUAL Christmas Memorial Service was ,nm, attended by some 3,000 people earlier in the month.

Members of the community came together at the Albin Memorial Garden in Southwark Park to remember their loved ones at the event, organised every year by Albins Funeral Directors.

sons of the late Barry Albin, a figurehead for the Bermondsey community who ran the familyfirm for years creating the memorial garden and the annual service. Thousands of people wrote messages to loved ones to be hung on a Christmas tree in the garden, there were carols, prayers, doves released and a grand fireworks display.

The Christmas tour is part of my wider plan to have the children visit throughout the year to sing, read poetry and generally interact with members of the community that they would not ordinary meet.

COUNCIL BACKS STOPPING ‘NO FAULT’ EVICTIONS AS HOMELESS FIGURES RISE EXCLUSIVE

A CAMPAIGN to end ‘no fault’ evictions has been backed by Southwark Councillors, who have been frustrated by the government’s failure to back a change in law to protect private renters.

Under Section 21 of the Housing Act, landlords can evict tenants without reason. Evictions are now the number one cause of homelessness in the UK – with a staggering eight in ten on no-fault grounds.

In Southwark, this number has grown dramatically. In 2010-11, 4.3 per cent of accepted homeless applications were as a result of evictions, but in 2016-17, this had increased by more than six times, to 30 per cent.

At Southwark Council’s assembly meeting on November 28, councillors approved a motion, tabled by Faraday ward councillor Jack Buck and housing cabinet member Stephanie Cryan, which called on the government to scrap Section 21 and give more protection to tenants received unanimous support.

On December 6 the issue was debated in parliament, but the Conservative parliamentary undersecretary of state, Heather Wheeler, refused to abolish Section 21. Conservatives have argued doing so would reduce the supply of homes privately rented, and push up rents.

She told the house: “Section 21 provisions provide an important guarantee to landlords that they will always be able to get their property back at the end of the tenancy.

“The flexibility for landlords and mortgage providers to recover their asset if they need to is crucial to retaining investment and supply in the sector, including the availability of buy-to-let mortgages.”

Cllr Jack Buck, Faraday Ward councillor, said: “Giving landlords

the power to evict tenants with ‘no cause’ means renters in Southwark are subjected to horrendous conditions in the private sector.

“Despicably, it’s an all too common story that those who complain end up on the street as a result.

“It’s no surprise this Tory Government are backing landlords and defending no fault evictions but Labour will carry on campaigning with renters until we get this disgusting law repealed.”

Despite the knock-back in parliament, the council is hoping to improve conditions in the private rental sector, and has pledged to introduce a Southwark Renters Union and develop a ‘Gold Standard’ for rental properties.

This year London has seen a surge in serious youth violence including a wave of stabbings and shootings – including a series of seemingly ‘titfor-tat’ attacks between warring gangs in Southwark.

The cross-party panel of eight will hear evidence from a range of experts and residents to look at how the council and other agencies can find solutions for the root causes of violence.

Two of its members are young people themselves. Speaking about their involvement, councillor Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health said: “They will be able to bring personal experience which is so important for a project of this nature.

“It is key that their voices and the voices of other young people in the borough are heard and that they are part of the conversation.”

Anyone can attend the meetings, with the next scheduled for 5.30pm on Wednesday, January 23, at the council’s Tooley Street offices, where early help and education will be discussed.

ROTHERHITHE POLICE have issued a warning to motorists after reports of thieves targeting vehicles to strip out the catalytic converters - which contain rare and valuable metals.

THE BERMONDSEY and Old Southwark constituency could lose 6,200 jobs in the event of a no-deal Brexit, according to a new study by the UK Trade Policy Observatory.

The study by academics at the University of Sussex ranks the impacts of a no-deal or a soft Brexit on all the parliamentary constituencies in the country and found that Bermondsey and Old Southwark is set to lose thousands of jobs if the UK crashes out without a deal next year.

The statistic makes the constituency in the top ten worst impacted constituencies by a no-deal Brexit according to the analysis.

PC Graham Baker, of the Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhood Team, confirmed “a number of recorded theft from motor vehicles, where catalytic converters were stolen by using some form of hydraulic equipment to raise the vehicles and remove the CAT taking no more than a few minutes.”

He added: “This is a national issue due to the increase in the price of certain precious metals.”

Among the spate of thefts in the area include the targeting of several vehicles at the Tesco Surrey Quays’ carpark earlier this month, the News understands.

Thieves allegedly targeted Toyota Priuses to cut out the valuable converters while their owners were inside the store shopping on Monday December 3.

One motorist whose car was reportedly vandalised said that she had only gone inside the store for an hour, only to find that thieves had lifted up her car and sawn-out the exhaust pipe in broad daylight.

Mr Coyle said: “Since the 2016 referendum, I have met several people who have been laid off due to Brexit and many employers who are planning to move jobs, offices and investment to other EU countries.

“This is saddening for our country - and we have not even left yet!

“The survey demonstrates more risks of leaving the EU. Some people think a 'No Deal' Brexit means the same as now; it doesn't, it means leaving the EU with nothing agreed putting thousands more

jobs at risk.

“The Government has failed to properly stand up for UK interests and is playing a dangerous game of Russian roulette with people's livelihoods."

Harriet Harman’s constituency of Camberwell and Peckham would lose 800 jobs in a no-deal, the research claims, with the borough’s other parliamentary constituency held by Helen Hayes MP, Dulwich and West Norwood, losing 850.

The study also claims that jobs would be lost as a result of a soft Brexit, although fewer than in the event of a ‘no-deal’, with 2,800 going in Mr Coyle’s constituency.

However the academics said their estimates were “conservative” saying Government aggregate estimates of nodeal job losses were approximately twice as large.

The News asked Tesco for a comment about the incident, but did not receive a response.

However criminals targeting vehicles for valuable metals may find their efforts were in vain, a spokesperson from the AA responded.

He said: “There’s always a possibility there will be criminals who have got a route to get rid of them, but I would imagine the majority are stolen by people who find it difficult to sell.

“It normally comes down to if there are scrap merchants who’re willing to take the metal.”

In 2013, a law change made it illegal to pay for scrap metal with cash, in a bid to tackle criminals stealing precious metals and flogging them to unscrupulous dealers.

The spokesperson added: “As soon as you become aware that someone has become a victim of this kind of theft, the message needs to go out to the community and that community needs to be more vigilant towards suspicious activity.

“If they have seen anything suspicious they should contact the police.”

According to a letter circulated in the community by police, cars with large ground clearance are at most risk from having their converters stolen.

Taller cars like 4x4s and vans are also said to be at risk because their catalytic converters are easier to cut out and contain more precious metals than the converters in some other vehicles.

Among the advice given to motorists to protect their cars include: parking their car in garage where possible; parking by a curb to make hydraulic lifting harder; and marking the metal shell of the converter so that it is easier to track if stolen.

SCHOOLS ARE ‘consistently performing above national averages’ in Southwark as new league tables reveal that 90 per cent are now rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’.

The annual School Standards Report shows in early years provision, Southwark has continued a five-year trend of improvement.

The borough ranked in the top bracket for the percentage of children achieving a good level of development. Southwark is also in the top 25 per cent of local authorities in England for year one phonics performance.

Key stage one standard performance for writing has also improved and remains above national and London averages, and reading and maths are also above average compared to the rest of England.

At Key stage two, Southwark is also in the top bracket of all local authorities in England for reading, writing and maths combined, and is also consistently above national averages for maths and science.

Despite changes in grading systems, at GCSE, pupils in Southwark have stayed above London and national averages, and A Level grades have also remained above national levels.

For children with special

educational needs or disabilities, Osfted inspectors have found that at the end of all key stages their achievements compare well with pupils in other parts of the country.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, schools and adult social care, said the results – which come after £200 million in education investment and a new school-building programme for more places - ‘speak for themselves’.

She told the News: “Our head teachers, staff, parents and children have told us of how the improved quality of their learning spaces has made a difference to their learning and working lives.

“We want all our pupils in Southwark to get the start they need to meet their dreams, whichever path in life they choose.

“Teachers, students and of course parents, should be very proud of themselves for improving results.”

At the end of the 2017-18 academic year, Southwark’s schools included five nurseries, 73 primaries, 18 secondaries, one all through school, one pupil referral unit, seven special schools and two hospital schools, educating a total of 43,038 pupils.

Forty-three per cent of children in Southwark are eligible for the pupil premium – extra school funding to help close the gap between more disadvantaged children and their peers.

AST WEEK Theresa May demonstrated yet again that she and her government are in office, but not in power.

The sight of the Tories postponing the vote on Theresa May’s unpopular Brexit deal at the last moment, as it became clear that the deal was as unpopular in Parliament as it was across the United Kingdom, demonstrated just how weak the government currently is.

Residents of Southwark and Lambeth voted overwhelmingly to Remain in the European Referendum in 2016. Since that time there has been a further swing towards Remain in south London and across the country.

I am a pro-European who campaigned very strongly to Remain in the EU during the 2016 referendum. I believe that the European Union has contributed strongly to peace and prosperity in Europe and that cooperating with our neighbours is the only way to

Brexit-shambles: May demonstrated that she is in office but not in power

If the Tories will not support a general election then the government must allow people the opportunity to vote on the detail of the Brexit deal tackle the big challenges facing us in the 21st century. The leave campaign lied during the EU referendum campaign and broke the expense limits that were designed to ensure that the campaign was run fairly. It is clear that Brexit will have damaging consequences for our economy, and for public services like our NHS – the government’s own figures show that there is no version of Brexit which doesn’t leave the UK poorer.

In Parliament I have voted repeatedly against Leaving the EU and in favour of a People’s Vote, reflecting the very strong proRemain views of the vast majority of my constituents in Dulwich and West Norwood.

Theresa May’s deal is far worse

than the current deal we have with the EU, and when she finally brings it to Parliament, I will vote against it.

It is now clear that Theresa May has lost the confidence of a significant proportion of her own MPs and her deal is unlikely to be approved by Parliament. If Theresa May’s deal fails to win support in Parliament then she should resign and a new Conservative leader should call a general election which would allow the British public their say on both the Conservative’s deal, and on the damage that this Tory government has been wreaking on communities up and down the country through their programme of austerity.

SECTION 21 EVICTIONS HAVE BECOME A WAY FOR LANDLORDS TO MAKE A QUICK PROFIT BY CASHING IN, WHICH FURTHER DRIVES UP PRICES

T THIS time of year homelessness is all around us, and many people are inspired to donate to help those who find themselves sleeping rough or living in temporary accommodation.

Homelessness can happen to anybody, and private renters are particularly vulnerable.

Eleven million people in England live in rented homes and most of them are on fixed term contracts, usually for six months or a year.

After that, a landlord can evict their tenant with just two months’ notice, and without a reason.

It didn’t used to be like this. Before Section 21 of the 1988 Housing Act was introduced it was much more difficult for landlords to evict tenants who paid their rent on time and looked after their homes.

As London’s property market has boomed and a national housing shortage worsened, Section 21 evictions have become a way for landlords to make a quick profit by cashing in, which further drives up prices.

Living with the looming threat of eviction is difficult for anyone, but the anxiety and financial cost of a move is particularly harsh for older people and those with children at school.

Ending Section 21 should not be controversial. In Scotland, the equivalent law has already been abolished. Now it’s up to the government’s opposition not to take no for an answer.

This is not a ‘second referendum’; it is not ‘asking the same question again until we get a different answer’. It is acknowledging that there are many issues which were not known or debated during the 2016 referendum campaign, and that the reality of Brexit now looks very different from what was promised by the Leave campaign. In this context, it is important that people have a final say on whether we want to go forward on the basis of a deal which will have damaging consequences for the UK, or whether we want to think again and stay in the EU.

Following our protests on the bridges the Mayor has now declared a climate emergency

OLLOWING THE recent extraordinary scenes on Southwark and four other London bridges, where thousands of protesters from the #Extinction Rebellion movement, peacefully blocked the roads calling for action on the climate emergency, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has formally declared a climate emergency.

He says London needs to be zero carbon within twelve years.

But what are the potential positives for Southwark residents of taking action to free us from the causes of this emergency & fulfilling the Mayor’s goal?

1. Freedom from unnecessary driving, would radically reduce the car-pollution trashing our kids’ lungs and killing our elderly. The roadspace freed up by having

car-free streets would allow them to become green playspaces for our kids again and other space could be used for local food allotments. It would also allow most residents to take up healthy cycling free from fear.

2. Freedom from meat, would help tackle Southwark’s obesity crisis, mean longer healthy lives for many Southwark residents and cheaper food.

3. Freedom from fossil fuel heating would radically reduce NOx pollution in Southwark, where up to 30% of it comes from gas central heating and so again improve our health.

4. Freedom from unnecessary consumerism would mean more money for better food, investing in energy efficiency, more time with our families and less £millions of Southwark council tax squandered on waste disposal.

It would create lots of jobs in

repair/refurbishment industries.

5. Freedom from unnecessary flights, would mean far less noise & aviation pollution plaguing Southwark residents under some of the busiest flight-paths in the world.

6. Freedom from fossil-fuel electricity would mean a major step to ensuring Southwark slashes its carbon emissions to assist global reductions, so that the north of the borough, can avoid being permanently flooded.

Fewer families larger than one or two kids, would allow the Southwark kids who are not being adopted to find loving homes and would reduce financial pressures on parents.

So, are you willing to step up in this global emergency, adopt these 6 freedoms and help Southwark achieve the Mayor’s goal of a zero carbon Southwark & London?

THE COUNCIL’S final decision on whether a temporary unit for traders displaced by Delancey’s Elephant and Castle regeneration plans should be approved or kicked into the grass has been postponed until next year.

Campaigners left disappointed by Mayor Sadiq Khan giving his assent to the controversial regeneration and full-scale demolition of the shopping centre have pinned their hopes on a second planning application for the Castle Square development, as they say a rejection could leave the entire scheme in jeopardy.

Protesters from the Up the Elephant campaign staged a demonstration outside the council’s Tooley Street offices on Wednesday, December 12, before the scheduled planning committee meeting where proposals for Castle Square were due to be voted on.

But the decision was deferred on the night as councillors wanted more clarity on current rents and how they compare with what will be on offer.

Tanya Murat from the Up the Elephant Campaign told the News: “We are pleased that the planning committee decided to defer the Castle Square application last night.

“Traders representing Latin Elephant, the Elephant and Castle Traders Association and nightclub Distriandina spoke in objection to the scheme.

“It was clear from what they were saying that the temporary unit would have been charging much higher rents than they currently pay in the shopping centre and that there is no place for a nightclub venue in the scheme either.

“The council should push Delancey to come up with a scheme that doesn't leave the traders out in the cold.”

Ms Murat had previously told the News after City Hall announced it would not hold an inquiry into the scheme that she was ‘shocked and disappointed’ and said the project could be a ‘disaster for the community’.

The final offer approved by the London Mayor includes 330 ‘affordable’ homes, including 116 at social rent, 53 at London Living Rent for households earning up to £60,000, and 161 homes at market rent.

Delancey has also committed to offering ten per cent affordable retail space – discounted for fifteen years with first refusal to existing independent traders who want to return to the newly built town centre.

compensate traders forced to relocate, and says its estimate of £634,000 ‘should not be regarded as, or mistaken for, a hard cap’.

But despite Delancey’s assurances, many are concerned the scheme will particularly impact Latin American traders and see the loss of live music and club venues in a blow to the area’s nightlife.

Cllr Maria Linforth-Hall, the Liberal Democrat councillor for St George’s ward, which includes Elephant and Castle, is supportive of redeveloping the area, but warned: “What we don’t want is for the Elephant to be just another generic identikit shopping centre that looks and feels like any

other in any part of the country.

“The local traders and the BAME community are a big part of the distinctive character and culture of the area and Southwark more generally.

That can’t be thrown away.”

Getting the Castle Square application approved is Delancey’s last hurdle.

A spokesperson for the developer told the News last week the legal terms and conditions were now all in place, paving the way for demolition and construction to begin, five years after consultation on the new town centre first started.

“We know that many people remain deeply concerned about how we will bring about this change.

“We face a significant challenge in the delivery of this project over a number of years.

“As ever, our reputation will need to be hard earned in the long-run.

“We would like to reassure the community and other interested parties that we take this responsibility extremely seriously.

“We will work tirelessly with all stakeholders and neighbours to manage the interim period sensitively and collaboratively.

“We will deliver a new Town Centre that we will all be very proud of in the end and will continue with an open dialogue as we progress with the plans.”

The decision was deferred on the night as councillors wanted more clarity on current rents and how they compare with what will be on offer at Castle Square

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT members are rightly angry that staffing levels on the Bakerloo Line have been hacked back to the bone presenting a serious danger to staff and passengers alike.

“Previous commitments to ensure safe staffing coverage have been flouted and in order to press the company to address the issues we have no option but to announce a programme of action.

“The union remains available for serious and genuine talks.”

But London Underground’s customer service chief slammed the action as ‘unjustified’ and said it would heap misery on travellers over the festive period.

Brian Woodhead, London Underground’s Director for Customer Service, told the News: “This action is entirely unjustified.

A GROUP of knitters from Dulwich who donate woollen clothes, blankets and toys for premature babies at King's College Hospital are looking for new members.

The group, based at the Dulwich Almshouse Charity's almshouse on College Road, knit, crochet, patchwork, embroider and sew, often working on projects together.

One of their most important pieces of work is making special clothes and tiny doll-sized blankets for babies at King's College Hospital's neonatal unit to help keep them warm in their incubators.

They also make soft knitted teddies keep to keep them company, and cushion their heads against their feeding tubes.

As the babies keep their clothes when they are well enough to go home, the unit needs regular donations so every little one is kept cosy.

As well as supporting the neonatal unit, the group also makes full-sized knee rugs for adult patients and also donates their knitted items to fundraising events held by local charities. They are currently looking for somewhere to display their work.

The group was set up by keen craftswoman Sheila Grantham, who started making blankets for King's after she stayed there in 1998 and 2001 for two hip replacements.

"I wanted to give something back after the care I received," she says, and started a weekly knitting group with friend Freda Neville.

Freda was recovering at home from leg injuries caused by a serious car crash

when Sheila suggested knitting for the hospital as a way to keep her busy.

"I didn’t have anything to do and Sheila brought me needles, wool and some patterns.

"I could already knit but Sheila’s encouragement is what got me into it," she says.

The group, which meets every Tuesday, has had many members over the years.

The core group are Sheila, Freda and pals Gwen Hickman, Jean Ball and Peggy Ball.

All met each other while living at Dawson's Heights in Each Dulwich.

Gwen, Peggy and Jean moved into Dawson's Heights in 1972 when it was first built, with Freda and Sheila joining in 1980.

At the time apart from Sheila, who had lived in the area since 1950, they were all new to Dulwich.

Sheila now lives in the almshouse and Freda and Gwen are also in the process of moving in too.

"It’s sociable", says Peggy, "I like coming to spend time with my friends each week."

"It’s not just a knitting group, it’s a sanity group’, adds Freda, "We’re all friends and we’re there for each other if we need it.

She continues: "When the babies are born so early their parents aren’t always prepared for them, and they don’t have clothes small enough for them to wear.

"Some of the babies are only a few hundred grams when they're born.

"The parents are so pleased to be able to take the clothes home too."

For Robinson Crusoe this year we are first introduced to the supporting cast and storyline, with a couple of rather excellent students from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance doing some sterling work, a young Robinson Crusoe in the guise of Matt Jolly (What a voice!), Michaela Bennison as posh totty Polly Perkins, Arabella Rodrigo multi-tasking all over the shop, Tom Guest playing Captain Wallace Windblower with gusto, and Lizzy Dive as the human masthead Saucy Nancy, playing it all chuckles and cheek.

But it is Anthony Spargo as the dastardly Gingerbeard and Andrew Pollard as Dame Delores Crusoe that we have come to see, and once we had met the rest they made their entrances to boos, jeers, wows and cheers.

With Mr Pollard once more putting his pen to paper for this panto, he has written in all the best costume changes for himself (Wows), and there are some absolute blinders - The one with the bells was particularly hilarious. But, generously, he does not take all the best lines, instead throwing them around quite freely like confetti to others.

Although he does also throw in several curve ball ad libs to keep them on their toes when they have to improvise their way out of it, much to the amusement of the audience.

When Gingerbeard first pokes his sneering face round the curtain we all know what to do (Boos), and he loves it, he thrives on it and admits that he ‘hates

kids’ (Jeers).

Dolly Crusoe is a fishmonger, which is a cue for a whole shoal of seafoodrelated puns and double entendres (I got his winkle out with a pin…). The jokes came verbally and visually and at different levels for a crowd that ranged from 6 to 86 (That was just in my party of four), which sometimes meant

confused youngsters would be looking askance at grown ups apparently laughing for no reason at all.

The best moments are when Pollard and Spargo get at it together, hamming it up in the finest traditions of the panto genre, and playing off each other in a tale that doesn’t have to make sense but is a whole lotta fun. In fact, one of the best

bits was when all the loose ends were shoe-horned into an unbelievable finale!

Andrew Pollard knows his stuff so you know you will get everything you want from this pantomime: song, dance, goodies, baddies, fun and frolics and a love interest that concludes with a happy ending (Cheers)

SIMON CALLOW returns for another seasonal run of the acclaimed one-man performance of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, and thank goodness he has. I can’t think of an actor better suited to the role of every character in, well anything really, and A Christmas Carol is no different with Callow seamlessly

transitioning from one to the other as though trying on winter gloves in John Lewis, writes Rosie O’Connell.

Cairns is beautifully subtle, with the stage simply adorned with a set of assorted chairs, becoming the illusion of a room full of guests or a solitary office. A curtain and a screen total out the rest of the set pieces nicely, creating a window into Scrooge’s story that is complemented by Adam Povey’s masterful lighting, which is atmospheric from start to finish, creating silhouettes and shadows that add to the necessary ominous feel. Ben and Max Ringham’s sound design is immersive, guiding you from empty, echoing home one minute to a bustling party the next, adding subtly to the simple yet transformative set.

The message of the redemptive power of kindness and compassion in Dickens’ story are what makes this tale so longlasting and humanistic. With such a

nce again, and seemingly without fail, the Greenwich Theatre turns up trumps with another great panto that brings together the baddest of baddies and the mother of all dames, writes Michael Holland.

A Callow Christmas Carol What could easily be a motionless monologue becomes dynamic exchanges, filled with all of the humour and melodrama that makes the book so enduring. Callow’s turn as Fezziwig and his wife et al is jovial and merry, prancing around the stage, while his Bob Cratchit is modest, heartfelt and gracious. Callow’s wry wit shines through, too. With a subtly raised eyebrow, a wink and a nod or a raucous laugh piercing through the audience, he keeps an irresistible feeling of cheer and goodwill thread throughout, effortlessly backing up the moral message at the heart of the production.

stripped back performance and scenery, it becomes clear that it is not the ghosts that have spooked Scrooge into his change of heart but his horror at the poverty of the Cratchit family and the warm, joyful embrace of his nephew Fred that moves him from misanthropic to munificent. The gentle warmth of this production is so inviting, and yet while it may be tempting to opt for a more extravagant, flashy show this festive season you would be hard pressed to find one as poignant.

Henry Spencer Ashbee: the Southwark local who amassed ‘world’s largest collection’ of pornography

here are quite a few unusual things about Henry Spencer-Ashbee, a Victorian gentleman who was born in the Rising Sun inn on Blackfriars Road in 1834. He was a self-made man and an only child in an era where that was rare. But the most unusual was his book collection: it contained lots and lots of porn.

A bibliophile by nature, Ashbee began to collect books alongside travel writing and his day-job as the senior partner of a textiles firm – quintessential activity for a Victorian gentleman. “He begins to build this huge archive of books. He gets very interested in collecting first editions of Don Quixote,” says writer Stephen Carver, author of The 19th Century Underworld. Alongside studying Cervantes, Ashbee also travelled widely writing travel memoirs from Tunisia.

But less conventional were the racier books he collected. “He becomes completely obsessed with it but while he’s doing that at the same time, he’s finding all these dirty books which he’s stashing away in this private library,” Carver adds. “He keeps it all separate from his family.”

The collection, a massive threevolume bibliography was extensive – rumoured by some researchers to have been the largest in the world. It was methodological. The bibliography contained the name of the erotica, a description of the plot, and liberal quotations from the text.

But it was also explicit. In one of the thousands of tomes, a young men gains entrance to a nun’s convent. The protagonist, to his shock, discovers that the head of the convent is his aunt, but does not let the family connection prevent him from enjoying himself.

Others, with titles like ‘The Lustful Turk’, do not need reading to give an indication of their subject matter.

“I think it’s definitely tens of thousands of books – it’s an awful lot of pornographic books,” laughs Carver, a former academic of the Victorian period at the University of East Anglia.

The large stash of dirty books has posthumously made Spencer-Ashbee’s name.

When he died in 1900, he left his large collection of Cervantes’ first editions to the British Museum.

However, the donation came with a caveat: to have the serious works of literature, the museum had to take his erotica, too.

The museum accepted, but hid his works away for years in the Private Case, a closed collection kept off the general shelves. Unsurprisingly, the porn has eclipsed his methodological and thorough studies of first editions of

Despite the conventional strait-laced mores of polite Victorian society, Ashee was unsubtle in his raunchy collection. True, they were kept away from his family and published under the pen-name ‘Pisanus Fraxi’. But it was not hard to figure out the author’s true identity. “He’s using quite a similar one to the one he used as a contributor to Notes and Queries, a gentlemen’s magazine. It’s a Latin play on his name,” points out Carver. “But it

was only circulated in his inner circle.”

His reputation as the Victorian-era’s ‘pornographer royale’ has fuelled speculation that Ashbee is the mysterious ‘Walter’, the author of the sprawling, obsessive title ‘My Secret Life’. Spanning eleven volumes and 4,000 pages, the 1888 memoir details the author’s numerous visits to London brothels and escapades with prostitutes.

But the theory doesn’t hold much water with Carver. He lists several reasons why he doesn’t think Walter

and Ashbee are one and the same. But ultimately, he says, “the dates just don’t match up.”

Surprisingly, for a man with a filthy book collection and often suspected of being behind a sex memoir, Ashbee was not as progressive as might be thought. He rowed with his wife, who believed in universal suffrage about women getting the vote. He did not believe his three daughters should be well educated. He disowned his son, the designer and architect Charles

Robert Ashbee, for being gay, despite having gay associates himself. He was once appalled at Charles turning up at his counting house wearing the unseemly outfit of a blazer and straw boater.

These paradoxes can lead people to think Spencer-Ashbee was a Jekyll and Hyde character: the scholar studying Cervantes by day, but a porno purveyor by night. It’s an interpretation resisted

by Carver. Ultimately the obsession cataloguing of porn was just as Victorian as the cataloguing of Cervantes. “What you get with Ashbee is the drive and confidence of the Victorian mind turned towards its subject” he says. “Not only did he study porn – he studied it quite well!”

The 19th Century Underworld, published in October by Pen and Sword is an exploration of moral panics and the seedy underworld of Victorian society.

Our Dulwich Hamlet reporter discovers how the work behind the club’s new bar reflects the wider narrative of a community pulling together to achieve more than the some of its parts DULWICH HAMLET’S return to Champion Hill became significantly more tangible last Saturday, at least for the club’s less sober followers, as the ground’s new-look bar was opened. I took a trip to East Dulwich to review it.

It was a cold wet December evening and, after the team’s defeat at Wingate & Finchley earlier in the day, I was fearful that the bar would be empty. Having never been to its previous incarnation, I did not know what to expect, nor where to find it. After parking my car outside Sainsbury’s I saw one man stumbling across the road, and I knew that the dark corner from whence he came must be the place. However, belying the hostile weather I was met by the warmest of welcomes. It was handshakes and hugs all round and a pint of lager had been shoved into my hands before I could utter the words, “I’m driving home”.

From an aesthetic point of view, the bar is spacious with a homely mix of sofas and tables, tastefully decorated walls showcasing moments from Hamlet’s history, and an eclectic mix of draught beer and cider. However, most eyecatching of all were the cheap prices.

Finally, a local sports bar where one can actually afford to drink!

Dave Wade Brown, the bar manager and the driving force behind all this renovation, cast light on how it came

about.

“Three or four weeks ago I was asked [to take on the project] by Tom Cullen, one of the directors, and Scott Collins, who owns Meat Liquor and Franco Manca,” Dave explained. “I’d been recommended to them by another local business owner named Ian who runs Brick Brewery. I thought the project was really exciting because I’d heard so much about the football club before.”

Dave emphasised the importance of local businesses in contributing to the bar’s renovation and future upkeep.

“We’ve had contributions from local breweries including Brick who I mentioned before and Canopy [Beer and Co], among others, who provided some local stuff.

“Local florists called The Fresh Flower Company have offered to bring us flowers every week. They said that what we’re doing here is really important to them because they really value that idea of community.”

In true Dulwich Hamlet fashion, the bar’s decoration was inspired by the fans.

Dave continued: “In terms of interior, I have a friend called Sam Mason who arranged the wall decoration with Jägermeister. Fans contributed thousands of Hamlet-related pictures and stickers and Tom Cullen whittled them down to a few.

“The images on the walls are an

amalgamation of these fan contributions, each with its own cool, funny or political message. We’re really keen that supporters can add to it themselves, so fans are encouraged to walk in and slap a sticker on the walls. The idea is that this design is only a starting point that fans can add to - almost like a living history of the club. We want the bar to be somewhere that the supporters view as their home.”

Dave conceded that he might have initially bitten off more than he could chew in taking on the project alone. But, he was able to complete it due to the help of willing volunteers.

“One thing I’ve learned from this process is that I should have hired

someone to help me,” Dave said.

“Thankfully, every day there have been ten to fifteen people walking through the door to say ‘Hi’ and help out. Duncan [Chapman] and Clare [Keeble] have been working from dawn until dusk every day to get the place ready for the game on Boxing Day. “One of the players’ dads – a fireman – came in to help ensure all our fire regulations were up to scratch. Even friends of friends who’ve got nothing to do with the club have come and helped out.”

The bar manger took a moment to reflect on the collective goodwill surrounding the club.

“It’s very unusual and it’s not

something I’ve experienced much before,” Dave added. “You hear about the idea of local community, but you don’t actually see it much, and especially not in such force. It’s amazing and very refreshing! I’ve made friends with hundreds of different people over the last few weeks. This is the first time I’ve actually been able to sit down over the last month and enjoy it.”

The story of Dulwich Hamlet’s bar reflects much of the narrative of the wider club and its return to Champion Hill – the tale of a community pulling together to achieve more than the sum of its parts. Even if the football has not been fantastic recently, at least the fans have a bar that they can call home from which to watch it – and all at a great price!

Miracle sequence little consolation as Hamlet bow out IT WILL be of little consolation to Dulwich Hamlet that they were on the right end of one of football’s goalmouth scrambles for the ages last weekend.

By Saturday evening it had already been viewed hundreds of thousands of times after being shared by Match of the Day and Sky Sports and will be one of those clips replayed for years, a bonkers sequence involving five goal-line clearances with goalkeeper Preston Edwards and, especially, defender Ibrahim Kargbo, the heroes.

It was in the tenth minute against Wingate & Finchley last weekend when a corner came in and was headed up in the air by Jason Banton. Edwards made a brilliant save to his left and then Kargbo, sensing danger – to say the least given what came – cleared off the line.

By this stage Edwards was back on his feet and in the right position to produce the next save. The ball rebounded again to a Wingate foot and incredibly Kargbo stuck out a right leg to prevent it going in.

But like all great climaxing sporting clips, the best was saved for last, as right after his previous intervention the defender flung himself, head first, towards Wingate’s Lewis Putman who thought he was going to finally be the one to put order the chaos and the ball in the net. But he hadn’t reckoned for Kargbo’s bravery, the defender making the final block with a combination of head and shoulder.

It was just a pity after that defiance that Hamlet then surrendered relatively meekly in this FA Trophy first-round clash.

Rob Laney scored for the hosts in either half as Hamlet’s poor run of form continues.

Better news for Gavin Rose’s side is that their return to Champion Hill on Boxing Day against Eastbourne Borough is set to be a sell-out.

Online tickets sold out earlier this week, and today (December 20) until 11pm was the last day to buy tickets at the club’s bar.

Kick-off on December 26 is 3pm.

FISHER ARE showing no signs that their unexpected spell at the top of the SCEFL Premier Division table is fazing them as they thumped Crowborough 6-0 last weekend.

It was their biggest win of the season and takes their goal haul to 43. They have a goal difference of 27, the second-highest in the division behind only Cray Valley (30).

Since their last defeat at Cray Valley at the end of October, Dean Harrison’s side have won eight successive games in all competitions, scoring 23 goals and conceding just three.

All the confidence gained from that run was obvious at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe last Saturday as they blitzed a side that was in the top half of the table.

Rob Brown started the rout before Mudiagha Wanogho doubled the lead.

Brown’s brother, Jamie, then saw a free-kick tipped onto the post, before from the second of two corners Kush Campbell-Palmer made it 3-0 in the 39th minute.

Fisher refused to let up as Dan Flemming’s goal made it four before Harrison brought on fresh legs in Trey Small and Jacob Skelley.

Small didn’t take long to get in on the scoring act when he scored Fisher’s fifth in the 74th minute.

And eleven minutes later he had his second as Fisher maintained their onepoint lead over Beckenham at the top of the table. Fisher are five clear of third-place Corinthian.

PECKHAM TRAVELLED to St Mary’s Cray to face senior division side Orpington Eagles in the Fred Jolly Memorial Trophy, and served up seven of the best last weekend.

The Rye were boosted by the return of John Woolley returning from injury, but Orpington started off on the front foot until the visitors eventually settled.

Rye goalkeeper Mick Holman’s kicks were causing the home defence problems and it didn’t take long for the visitors to take the lead from that route. It was Duke Binitie who was the beneficiary from a booming Holman clearance, as he finished from a tight angle for his 30th goal of the season.

It was soon 2-0 when Danny Gibson headed home from a Craig Parsons corner and the chances kept on coming for the Rye with the Orpington goalkeeper producing save after save to keep the score to two.

But his heroics were not enough as Binitie accepted an early Christmas

present when a bad touch from the Orpington defender allowed him to go through to calmly finish for his second.

A nice passage of play and a pinpoint cross from Ricky Essex found the head of Anthony Dennis to nod home a fourth. The Rye were cruising and Binitie finished the half with a hattrick.

With one foot in the next round Alvin Spencer made changes and a quality cross from Charlie Eldridge found Tarique Jules who slotted home with a tidy finish.

Another cross from Parsons found the head of Jim Holman to head in for his first goal for the club.

Orpington carried on going and their persistence paid off when a scramble in the box was finished into the roof of the net to make it 7-1.

The hosts then got a penalty and their captain dispatched it to leave the final score 7-2 as the Rye progressed to the next round.

PECKHAM TOWN struggled to cope with 40mph winds and freezing conditions, and fell to a 21 defeat away to Margate Sports in the last sixteen of the Bill Manklow Inter-Regional Challenge Cup last Saturday, writes Duncan Hart...

Town made three changes to the team that beat the league leaders last weekend, as midfield pair Lukman Mojeed and Ali Amisu and in-form winger Nicky Meta dropped out. This provided an opportunity for teenager Yousef Bouimane to impress, as well recent signings Adam Toubal and Lewis McIntyre.

The conditions made things difficult for Town right from kick-off as they struggled to adapt to the wind in their faces. There was an early scare when a regulation clearance from Larry McArdle in goal went up, turned midflight and landed on the edge of the penalty box.

The Menace fell behind on fifteen minutes, when a through ball over the top gained momentum in the wind and Margate’s Harrison Copley was first to react. The number 9 managed to control the ball and finish neatly at the near post. Peckham battled to get back

into the game for the remainder of the first half, but chances were at a premium against a well-drilled and tough-tackling Margate Sport defensive line.

Peckham had the wind behind their backs in the second half, but Sports coped better with the conditions.

Bouimane switched to the left side, and nearly equalised for Town as he cut in and hit a curling shot that was angling to the top corner, but Roddy Hayward leapt to his left to turn it around for a corner. Sports extended their lead midway through the half, as a cross from the right was poked home by Connor Partridge at the near post and underneath the despairing McArdle.

The Menace battled hard to get back into the game, and increasingly dominated possession, but the final incisive ball was not there against a resilient Margate back four. With ten minutes remaining, the ball fell invitingly to the in-form Kladji Cani in front of goal, but his shot was high and wide.

Peckham got a goal back in injurytime, as Hady Traore poked home from close range. Town pressed for an equaliser, and had a free-kick in the last minute of injury time. The ball was squared to Adrian Butler on the edge of the area, but his shot went narrowly wide of the right-hand post. There was no time for any further action, and both

teams swiftly headed back to the warmth of the dressing rooms.

Chairman and founder Bryan Hall said: “With six starters missing from the usual line-up, and a near Baltic wind and rain this was always going to be a difficult afternoon.

“I want thank Peter’s Fish Factory for a lovely supper on the seafront, and wish the Margate boys all the best going forward.”

Town play their final game before the Christmas break on Saturday December 22, when they travel to Otford United. They return to action on January 5 away to Hawkinge Town.

NEIL HARRIS emerged in a hurry from the tunnel where the Invincibles Pavilion meets the Alan Kelly Town End and into the wind and rain.

“Where’s Dan?” he barked. “How long is it going to take him to get down from up there?”

Harris disappeared back through the tunnel to speak to Millwall’s media channels as a clutch of journalists from the written press waited for his postmatch interview.

Former Preston striker Neil Mellor, with his Sky Sports microphone, hunched against the slanting rain coming in over the stands.

There are more media demands than ever on managers, and they must seem especially draining after your team has lost.

First there is the official club interview.

There can then be at least two separate interviews, one with Sky Sports and one with the local BBC radio station.

Those working for the daily or Sunday editions wait for the press conference, which usually takes place in a media room or else pitch-side, a scrum of reporters straining to place their Dictaphones close to the manager’s mouth. Some managers then also grant those who need quotes for Monday’s papers extra time.

So you can imagine the mood of a manager who has just seen his team lose their eleventh league game of the season before Christmas, facing that schedule.

It was soon apparent Harris was not going to do anything apart from his piece with Sky, which he is contractually obliged to fulfil.

But before speaking with Mellor he wanted to review the goals his side had conceded with the club’s video analyst Dan McLoone.

In particular the third goal, Andrew Hughes’ free-kick which Jordan Archer got his hand to but the ball spun over the line. To be charitable to the goalkeeper, there did appear to be a deflection which slightly wrong-footed him.

It’s often a nervous wait for journalists whose editors or sub-editors are back in the office waiting for the quotes from the press conference to come through.

After Harris finished with Mellor, he darted back towards the tunnel and as he did he was asked by a journalist working for The Sun if he was doing his group interview. Without stopping he fired off a brusque “no” and left the stadium for the team bus.

Players may say they don’t care what’s written or said about them in the media, but that’s mostly not true. It’s human nature to want to know who’s saying what about you, who’s been critical or who’s had words of praise.

Harris had already revealed a lot of what he was thinking to the club’s media, and if players had their phones out reading the reaction to the result on the bus on the way home, it would have made some of them nervous.

“I have to be honest enough to say we have to change what we’re doing, or I have to change personnel,” Harris had said. “It pains you to say it because I love the boys, they’re absolutely brilliant.”

“We have to be realistic. If we can’t improve our results then something has to change, something has to change. I love my job, so that ain’t changing. I have to change the players, and that’s not a threat, it’s just the reality.”

The reason journalists were given as to why Harris didn’t do a post-match press

conference was that he felt like he was saying the same thing every week.

But this was the first time you felt it might be the end of the road for some of his Lions squad, either in January or next summer.

James Meredith was taken off at halftime after he had been caught out of position before Tom Barkhuizen put Preston 2-0 up. Meredith had also been close but not close enough to the first goal scorer, Alan Browne, though his culpability for that was less clear.

Then there was the familiar Millwall rally, the goal to get back into it and numerous chances to level, the best when Jed Wallace led a break and found Aiden O’Brien, but Paul Huntington dashed across to make a last-ditch tackle and the ball looped over.

But just when the contest seemed set for a frantic climax, Hughes’ fairly tame freekick looked like it flicked off the boot of Ryan Tunnicliffe and that was enough to deceive Archer.

Ben Pearson smacked a shot off the crossbar before Lee Gregory scored his ninth goal of the season in the third minute of injury-time.

It was Preston’s Lukas Nmecha who had the last of 31 efforts on goal for both sides, but Shaun Hutchinson made a brave block.

At least Hutchinson epitomised his side’s fighting spirit with that intervention, and that has not been in doubt this season.

After Harris reviewed the game, though, he may have had a clearer idea of what, or who, is going to be changed.

Skipper Billy Mitchell scored one of the great Den goals

THE HOPE for Millwall’s youngsters is that, sometime in the not-too-distant future, they’re not looking back at this epic game as a missed opportunity but rather when their potential was really opened up to them.

They were in tears in the home dressing room at The Den on Monday night having pushed Spurs to the brink, but the performance offered so much promise and a validation of the club’s work at underage level.

Millwall, through captain Billy Mitchell’s wonder goal, were moments away from knocking a Tottenham side that had beaten Barcelona 2-0 away the previous week, out of the FA Youth Cup third round.

But, heartbreakingly, Spurs equalised in the 93rd minute to send the game into extra-time, when the two goal scorers in that Uefa Youth League game against Barca, Troy Parrott and Rodel Richards, combined for the winner. The depth of class and prestige of Spurs’ academy was illustrated when Maurizio Pochettino, son of senior boss Mauricio, came on late on in normal time.

The young Lions, playing in the same 44-2 formation default through the underage sides to the seniors, somehow summoned the energy in front of almost 1,000 fans to press for a leveller with striker Harry Taylor twice seeing efforts diverted just past the post in the second half of extra-time.

Millwall had earlier struck the woodwork twice, through George Alexander – son of Gary – and Taylor, while winger Jayden Davis had a glorious chance at 1-0 but flashed a volley just wide.

The Lions were magnificent, playing a positive, high-energy pressing game, winning the ball back in advanced positions with players then instantly transitioning into attack and offering different angles. Mitchell and midfield partner Reuben Duncan won possession so often in midfield. Mitchell’s 35thminute goal came after Duncan intercepted on halfway, played forward to Taylor who spotted his skipper’s run from midfield. Mitchell had at least four different passing options as team-mates joined the attack, before he thumped the ball past Joshua Oluwayemi off the post into the top corner.

They held that lead until three minutes into injury-time, when Matt Wells’ side won a succession of corners, before finally substitute J’Neil Bennett forced the ball over the line. Richards’ strike four minutes into extra-time looked like it would knock the fight out of an exhausted Millwall, but later on it was three Spurs players collapsing with cramp and Taylor almost snatched a leveller.

In the tunnel afterwards Wells met Millwall under-18 joint boss, and former Tottenham defender, Chris Perry and was heard praising the performance of the hosts.

Larry McAvoy, the other joint manager, was proud of the team’s performance.

“We don’t like losing, we’re used to winning. But sometimes you have to come off and say they couldn’t do any more,” McAvoy told the News. “Yes we could have done slightly better with the goals but that may have been down to concentration and tiredness.

of possession. It was really pleasing.

“The traits required to play in our first team, they showed all that. It was good to play in front of a crowd, it was a great experience, a great night. It was a pity we couldn’t get over the line but there were a lot of positives to take from that.

“We’re a pressing team, we like to try to win the ball back quickly. We wanted to make sure that when the Spurs players came off the pitch they knew they had been in a game.

“It was more than that. Their manager spoke to me afterwards and said we deserved to win the game. He was honest.

“We just showed great courage and bravery to go and press the ball. It would have been easy to sit back and let them have possession but we tried to get it back quickly.

“There was a big crowd here and hopefully they will go away knowing there are players in our academy who can go and play in the first team one day.”

Millwall had superb performances all

over the pitch. Goalkeeper Joe Wright, after a quiet first half, made several breathtaking saves, Junior Tiensia looks like the modern-day quick attacking left-back, while Mitchell’s goal was one of the great Den strikes.

“He’s a defensive midfielder and he works on his game so much,” McAvoy continued. “He really deserved that goal in terms of how hard he has worked all season for us. We made him captain, when he came into the club a couple of years ago he was a bit introverted, a bit timid. Now he’s got real personality, really understands what playing in central midfield for Millwall means and the characteristics you’ve got to have.

“He led by example, he deserved that goal not just based on this performance but on how he’s played for us all season.

Really, really pleased for him. It would have been nice had it been the winning goal but he just sums up the whole group, how we work, the attitude of the boys.

“They were in tears in the dressing room

but nights like Tuesday night will stand them in good stead.”

Several senior Millwall players including club skipper Steve Morison were at the game, and Neil Harris was keeping a close eye on players he hopes will one day be under his command.

McAvoy said: “He came in the dressing room afterwards and had a lot of praise and some kind words. They would have known he was there but they just went and played their game, I don’t think they were thinking about who was there or not there.

“It was certainly nice to put on a performance in front of the manager and for him to be so positive, which he always is about the boys’ performance.

“We had a real go. We were unlucky in the end not to win the game. If you had come and watched us and we had stood off and shown too much respect...that’s not what we’re about, that’s not what this football club is about. Against bigger clubs we will always have a go and have a fight and the fans, even if you give the ball

away, will still appreciate the effort.”

McAvoy was asked how these players can give themselves the best chance of making a senior breakthrough.

He responded: “Hard work, attitude, which these boys have got in abundance.

Coping as you move up the levels, decision-making.

“We’re preparing them to go into the 23s and [under-23 boss] Kevin Nugent will prepare them to go into the first team. If they’re good enough the opportunity will be here at this football club.

“We haven’t got the wage bill and the money that other clubs have got so if the youngsters are good enough they will get a chance. Nights like Tuesday are really positive for the manager [Harris] to come and see that type of performance.”

“It was a really good game, I hope everyone was entertained. We said let’s come off the pitch and not have any regrets. I don’t think anyone could have any regrets after how they played.

“Winning is everything, we know that, they understand that. But if they play like that every week then they’ll win more games than they’ll lose.”

MILLWALL PLAYERS were soon aware of Neil Harris’ strong comments after last weekend’s 3-2 defeat to Preston – and Jake Cooper believes the Lions manager was right.

After their eleventh league loss of the season, Harris said that he would have to “change the players” if results did not improve.

With January’s transfer window approaching, that would have left some of the Lions squad wondering about their futures with the club.

But Cooper admitted that they have been letting Harris down.

“We had a little chat on the coach,” Cooper said of Harris’ post-match reaction. “It’s true, you know, what he said. We’re not doing the full justice to the club, the manager and the coaching staff at the minute as players.

“We need to turn that around and come together to work things out. We have to

have a positive mentality going into games thinking we can come out with more than just what other people might expect of us.

“We need to get back to that real resilience that we had. I’m sure with the work that we do on the training ground, the performances that we are putting in, results will start coming our way.

“It’s just about being positive now.

We’ve had a few negative results, fair enough. It’s important the lads stay together and be motivated each game that we can get results.

“There’s not been a game we haven’t been in. First half we conceded two goals but our second-half performance was one of the best we’ve had this season.

“To come away having won that second half, we need to take that into Saturday [against Stoke] and start off the game how we ended against Preston.

“While we’ve been on a run of bad form and things haven’t been going our way, Preston only had four shots on our goal and scored three. It’s not going for us at the moment. We had ten good chances on their goal and only scored

two.

“It’s about finding that balance that we keep goals out of our net and score at real key times in the game when we’re on top, or it’s 0-0 and we get that first goal, or getting back into the game like last weekend when it was 2-1 and we had great chances to equalise.

“If we focus on our game plan and what the manager wants us to do, the more chance we’ll have of being successful.”

Millwall have conceded 38 goals this season – just seven fewer than in all of the last campaign. Only Sheffield Wednesday (40) have let in more league goals this campagin.

Cooper believes it’s a mentality issue.

“I think maybe it’s just a bit of negativity around conceding chances,” Cooper continued. “We’re so worried about giving a goal away that it has the opposite effect.

“We need to stop worrying about that and concentrate on what we can do right in games. The supporters as well, the club itself, we need to focus on what we can do better this season.

“I don’t think anyone who has watched

us this season will think we’ve given up in any game.

We’ve had some tough bits of luck against us but the boys have shown great resilience to come back and fight against what’s gone wrong.

That’s what we have to do, ultimately, we’re professionals and when things go wrong we have to react to them.

“That’s what we’re trying to do right now and with the lads we’ve got in this changing room we can certainly turn things around this season.”

Cooper scored his fourth goal of the season when he made it 2-1 at Deepdale last Saturday, but he feels teams are wiser to his threat.

Millwall are putting in the hard yards on set-pieces to ensure positive outcomes at both ends of the pitch.

Cooper said: “You see teams now trying different things, they have picked up on it a bit more so I have to try and find different ways and we have to try and work on different set-pieces with the boys.

piece I can’t wait to attack it.

“We did some work on set-plays last week because we have been conceding poor goals. We tried to work that out and it was better last weekend.

“We got a bit physical in training, there were toes trod on, but that’s all part of the game. We know that, especially here, it’s a massive part of the game.

“There’s been shouting and arguing but there’s never been anything more than that. We’re a tight-knit bunch of lads and I know if there ever was anything like that the senior lads would step in and make sure that it didn’t cross the line. It’s great here, we play on that line but not over it.

“A lot of goals are scored from setplays and we have to make sure we’re one of the better teams at them.”

NEIL HARRIS will make no apologies for wielding the axe in January as he warned: “It’s business.”

Millwall are set to be more active in the winter transfer window than was planned some months ago after recent injuries and a run of poor results has left them in the Championship’s bottom three.

The Lions travel to Stoke City on Saturday still without a first away win of the season and on a seven-game streak

without a victory.

Harris said earlier this season that there was unlikely to be a big turnover of players in January, but hinted after last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Preston that position may have changed.

He was asked about his post-match reaction earlier this week.

“My comments after the game were borne out of frustration and reality. If we’re not performing we have to find better,” he said.

“It’s not a threat to everybody that they’re going to be out and other people are going to be in. The reality is that we need to be a better group and we need competition for places.

Lions to get down to business in January market

“If people aren’t performing then there has to be players that are willing to take their shirt or can take their shirt. Players have had the opportunity this year and not always grabbed it.

“We have to find a way of being better, and if that means we have to adjust personnel then so be it.

“That’s not personal, that’s business.

And football is a results-based business.

“Will there be more personnel coming in [than originally planned]? We’ll have to take it one step at a time. The transfer window is dictated by who is available, the finances associated with people coming in.

Harris, however, has appeared to rule out a move for Ben Marshall, who snubbed the Lions to join Norwich last summer.

Harris said: “There’s no doubting Marshy last year played a huge part in our run towards the end of the season.

He’s a fantastic character and personality to have in the changing room. His ability on the pitch is first-class.

“He’s a player we chased in the summer and didn’t get. Do I expect anything to change now? I wouldn’t have thought so.

“Norwich are top of the league and are flying. I’m not expecting anything there.”

Coops: No chance I was off EXCLUSIVE

JAKE COOPER wasn’t concerned about Glasgow Rangers renewing their interest in him in January – because he had no intention of going anywhere.

Steve Gerrard’s Rangers made a £3million move for Cooper last summer, but Millwall’s board slapped a firm Not For Sale sign on the centre-back.

Reports in Scotland earlier this month claimed Gerrard sent chief scout Andy Scoulding to The Den in November and the latter returned with a glowing report after Cooper, 23, netted a late equaliser against Bolton.

But all that speculation was ended last week when Cooper agreed a new long-term deal with Millwall.

“It was never going to be an issue,” Cooper insisted. “After the transfer window in the summer that was done. That didn’t really faze me.

“It’s down to other clubs who they want to sign. I’m a Millwall player and I want to help the club improve.

“It did take some time to organise things and it was nice to get it over the line and come to an agreement with the club. Now it’s just about playing for Millwall and making a better future here at the club.

“I just focussed on how I was playing and how the team was playing and let negotiations take care of themselves. I tried to influence my performances in that sense and thankfully it was agreed.”
