Gloves come off for round 2 in battle for the north

O

UT OF the blue, a general election is upon us – and all eyes will be firmly fixed on the north of the borough.

You can bet the house on Harriet Harman staying put in Camberwell & Peckham, boasting as she does the largest majority in the capital. And if not the house, at least the garage on her Labour compatriot Helen Hayes retaining her seat in Dulwich & West Norwood in the south of the borough.

But it’s in Bermondsey and Old Southwark where you’d be harder pressed to choose the winner. Incumbent Neil Coyle has only been in the seat since the 2015 election, but has been making plenty of noise – not least in his vigorous criticism of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. He will feel that he’s barely had the chance to step from the shadows of his predecessor, the Lib Dem Simon Hughes, who held the constituency for 32 years. And all of a sudden, like the ghost from Christmas past, Mr. Hughes is knocking at the door again, having immediately declared he would be standing as his party’s candidate on Tuesday.

Mr. Hughes will feel that he was swept from power in a national tide that all but obliterated his party at the polls. Mr. Coyle will argue that voters decided on someone new and fresh, unburdened by the years in coalition with the Tories.

As ever, it’s hard to predict how much people will vote along party lines, on local issues or national ones - most obviously Brexit. On this, Mr. Hughes’ party is unequivocally against it, while Mr. Coyle rebelled against his party in voting against the triggering of Brexit - so no clear blue water here.

Of course there can only be one winner, and it will prove a brutal result for the loser.

A recent letter in these pages from Mr. Hughes, criticising his successor, was savagely rebuffed by Mr. Coyle the following week - a sign that there will be no love lost between the two in the election campaign.

Win it, and Mr. Coyle puts the final nail in his predecessor’s political career, and reinforces his own mandate locally, just as the Prime Minister hopes to do on a national scale. And if Labour loses badly, who’s to say that this ambitious young politician might not be in the running for any prospective Labour leadership – and even go head to head with Ms. Harman, who surely regrets not standing for the leadership?

Mr. Hughes, if he wins it, can then justly claim that 2015 was a blip and that he is still the right man to champion the causes of Bermondsey and its surrounds. The speed with which he announced his candidacy leaves you with the impression that he has been waiting impatiently for this opportunity, refusing to accept that his time here is over.

Whether the voters will see it that way will be fascinating to watch.

A BERMONDSEY WWI hero whose bravery as a machine gunner earned him the Victoria Cross has been honoured with a commemorative plaque.

The plaque was laid in honour of Lance Corporal Harold Mugford from Keetons Road on April 11 at the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe War Memorial in West Lane.

Mr Mugford, born in 1894, became one of the Essex Yeomanry regiment when he joined in 1914, along with his two brothers.

His older brother Richard returned after service, but his younger brother Percy died in battle.

Mugford’s life.

Before the war he was a clerk with a shipping company, Furness Withy, and a keen cricketer. He saw action in the Ypres Salient in the early part of 1915 and again in May, where the Yeomanry distinguished themselves at the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge. He was with the regiment’s machine gun detachment at the Battle of Loos on September 27-28, 1915, and fought there again in the early part of 1916.

Mr Mugford was awarded a Victoria Cross for his act of bravery at Monchyle-Preux, Battle of Arras on April 11, 1917. He and his fellow Yeomen were part of the 8th Cavalry Brigade tasked with recapturing high ground on the east and north east of Monchy-lePreux.

the direction of the Yeomanry's advance into Monchy itself.

Although the recapture of Monchy was a success, they quickly came under a fierce counter attack.

It was reported that the 8th Machine Gun Squadron did great work in helping to keep the attackers at bay, and it was Mr Mugford’s extraordinary bravery that earned him the Victoria Cross.

His machine gun partner was killed within minutes of the counter attack,

and Mr Mugford was severely injured.

He was ordered to a new position and told to seek medical help, but continued on with his machine gun, inflicting severe loss on the enemy.

Soon after he was again wounded when a shell explosion broke both his legs. He still remained with his gun, begging his comrades to leave him and take cover. Shortly afterwards this non-commissioned officer was removed to a dressing-station, where he was again wounded in the arm.

The valour and initiative displayed by Mr Mugford was instrumental in breaking up the enemy’s counterattack. For his “conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty”, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

He was not expected to survive his wounds, and was in a critical condition when brought back to England, and

underwent six operations.

Both his legs were amputated above the knee and, in addition to the wound to his arm, shrapnel was removed from his hip, tongue and jaw.

He died on June 16, 1958, at the age of 63. He was afforded the honour of a military funeral in Chelmsford Cathedral, prior to cremation at the Southend Crematorium. His wife Amy died in 1978. They had no children.

The ceremony to unveil the plaque was attended by Mayor of Southwark Kath Whittam and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle.

The Victoria Cross commemoration was part of the centenary programme to remember the First World War. The Victoria Cross plaques are placed near the birth place of each VC holder, and this was the third to be unveiled in Southwark since 2014.

A CROWDFUNDING campaign has raised thousands for a Millwall fan who suffered a cardiac arrest during the match last week.

Antony Murphy was “dead for nine minutes” after he had a cardiac arrest at Millwall’s clash with Northampton at the Den on Friday, April 14.

The 40-year-old, originally from Bermondsey but living in Kent, was rushed to hospital and put in a medically induced coma.

Antony’s friend John Kendall, 52, said he was out of the coma on Tuesday, April 18, and doctors were waiting for him to wake up on his own.

“He was at the Millwall game and one of our mates looked at him and said ‘are you feeling alright’ and he said ‘yeah’ but then about ten seconds later he just passed out,” said John, a lorry driver.

“He was dead for nine minutes and received CPR until the ambulance arrived. He went to hospital and they operated on his heart and then they put him into an induced coma.

Friends get together to raise cash for former Bermondsey boy, who acts as a carer for his dad “His heart is working and he is breathing on his own, but the doctors are waiting to see how much damage has been caused when he wakes up because nine minutes is a long time without oxygen.”

John, along with five other friends, are raising money to help Antony because he is a full-time carer to his father.

“On Friday, because he never went home, we had to ring his dad and tell him,” said John, also originally from Bermondsey but living in Kent.

“Antony’s mum died a year ago and he’s an only child so it’s just him and his dad now.”

The friends have already managed to raise more than £3,000 to help Antony and his dad and they plan to fundraise at Millwall’s match against Oxford at the Den this Saturday, April 22.

“There will be six of us – myself, Frankie George, Jono Smith, Jack Rogers, Lou Arnold, and Hazel George – with collection buckets on Saturday,” said John.

“There will be two of us in each stand and we will be wearing T-shirts with a picture of Antony.”

“We want to say thank you to St John’s Ambulance and all the staff at Millwall for helping Antony on Friday,” he added.

“We are hoping that when he wakes up he will be fine.”

ROTHERHITHE: A family fun day will raise money in memory of a much-loved DJ who died of lung cancer – despite never smoking.

Stevie ‘Faze-II’ Wonder sadly died from lung cancer in August last year at the age of 52.

The popular father-of-two was well-known in the area for DJ-ing at school events, birthdays, and private parties.

His wife, Mandy Cooper-Walters,

has organised a family fun day at Bacon’s College on what would have been his birthday on Saturday, April 29. All donations will go to the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, which helped Stevie financially after his diagnosis.

The event will be held at Bacon’s College, in Ball Pond Road, SE16, from 1-6pm on Saturday, April 29.

Families can expect fun activities including basketball, rounders, tugof-war, and arts and crafts.

Day centre to feed marathon crowds BERMONDSEY: An under-threat day centre will host an information session and feed hungry marathon crowds on Sunday.

The Camden Society’s Riverside day centre, in Cherry Garden Street, off Jamaica Road, will be selling hot

drinks and bacon and sausage sandwiches throughout the London Marathon on Sunday.

The centre, which could close after being served notice on its lease by the council, will also be handing out information leaflets and fundraising.

A DAMNING investigation has revealed that a global property firm made tens of millions in profits from selling 282 luxury homes in Elephant and Castle, with zero affordable housing.

Records from Australian property giant LendLease show that every single flat in the 37-storey ‘One the Elephant’ tower block was pre-sold before completion in 2016.

The firm’s financial statements show the flat sales brought in revenue of AU$345m, or approximately £185m (based on average 2014-16 exchange rates).

The 35% Campaign, who published the investigation on their blog last week, estimated that LendLease spent less than £110m on all costs associated with building the mammoth block, leaving it with profits of at least £70m.

The numbers have caused the campaigners to ask why Southwark Council had given LendLease permission to build the block in 2013, with no provision of affordable or social housing.

LendLease paid the council a total of £22m in order to gain planning permission for the tower block, of which £20m was used by the council to build the recentlyopened Castle leisure centre.

The £22m can be broken down into the following costs: • £4.6m as a Section 106 (instead of providing affordable housing) • £12.24m as an overage payment (given in light of the excess profits made on the sale of flats) • £6.6m to buy the land off the council LendLease then spent £79m on construction, according to the company’s Portfolio Report published in December 2015. £0.9m was also given to the Greater London Authority. A LendLease spokesperson said there were also costs for marketing, and consulting with architects, engineers and local residents, but said they could not be disclosed as they were “commercially sensitive”.

Add it all up, and the 35% Campaign have assessed that LendLease’s overall costs came to approximately £108m.

Bermondsey man Jerry Flynn, who coauthored the 35% Campaign investigation, said: “It defies common sense that anyone could have looked at this scheme and not questioned whether LendLease would profit hugely from this.”

He said the profits showed that viability schemes (used to assess what level of affordable housing developer should provide, based on projected profit levels) could easily be “manipulated” for developers to avoid providing affordable homes.

“It’s only us who are saying they have made this amount of money, and it’s up to LendLease to clarify what their profits were from all the sales. But up until now they have said nothing.

“You can look at all the different scenarios for the value of the land and the projected revenue from the sales, and it still shows how easily [viability schemes] can be manipulated in developers’ favour.

development look as costly as possible, so that they won’t have to provide affordable housing.

“It should also be noted that they will be making money from the underground parking, and the lease they have given to Pret A Manger.”

A Lendlease spokesperson called the figures “materially overstated” and questioned whether the gross revenue figure for the flat sales had been converted from Australian dollars using an accurate exchange rate. However, they were unable to provide figures of their own.

“Our long-term partnership with Southwark Council is delivering huge investment for the Elephant and Castle community,” the spokesperson said. “We are proud of the contribution One the Elephant has made in transforming a previously derelict swimming pool into a thriving new place at the heart of the Elephant and Castle, with new homes, shops, a world-class community leisure centre and a significantly improved public park.”

The News asked the council whether it would call for an independent audit of LendLeases’s profits, or if it would seek to review its deal with the company to try to recoup any ‘excess’ profits.

Councillor Peter John, leader of Southwark Council, said: “The council is more than happy with the arrangement we made with LendLease regarding the profit share and we are confident that the outcome, which not only covered the costs of our new leisure centre, but provided additional funds to help us build new council homes in the Elephant and Castle area, shows how successful these agreements can be is creating benefits for the local community.”

LendLease are also the council’s development partner for regeneration of the Elephant Park site – formerly the Heygate Estate – which will include a quota of 25 per cent of new homes to be let at affordable rents.

Southwark has worst knife crime conviction rates, new figures show

SOUTHWARK HAS the worst record in London for solving knife crime cases, and like the rest of the capital, has seen an increase in reported knife incidents.

Data published last week by the Met Police showed there were 577 kniferelated cases for the March-toFebruary period in 2015-16, compared to 840 for 2016-17.

And the rate at which Southwark’s knife-crime cases were ending with a conviction fell from 18.4 per cent to 15.4 per cent. The figures also show that Southwark’s knife-crime conviction rates returned to their status in 2013-14, when at 16 per cent, they were the worst in London.

Other boroughs with poor-knife crime conviction rates in 2016-17 were Tower Hamlets (15.9 per cent) and Westminster (16.1 per cent).

While in neighbouring Lambeth and Lewisham the conviction rates were 20.7 per cent and 24.6 per cent respectively.

The data showed that gun crime had also become more prevalent in the borough, as the number of separate reported incidents involving a firearm jumped from 87 in 2015-16, to 128 in 2016-17. And the number of those cases that resulted in conviction rose from 23 to 29 – a conviction-rate reduction from 26.4 per cent to 22.6 per cent.

A statement from the Met said: "We are concerned about the rise of gun crime and rise of knife crime offences committed by young people and the changing nature of the offenders. Young people carrying knives are doing so for a variety of reasons including status, criminality and self-protection but only around a quarter are affiliated with gangs.

Last year saw The Met launch of Operation Shield to tackle mopedenabled crime, Operation Viper for gun crime, and Operation Sceptre for knife crime.

“We’re led to believe that these operations require a pooling of officers from each borough, and the borough commander can’t block it.

And it means we can lose community officers,” said Florence, who sits on the Greater London Authority’s Police and Crime Committee.

“I’ve lost count of the number of operations they have announced. But what effect are they having?

“I hope for the new commissioner we don’t have these operations every other month. “[For example] we need licensing officers to be available to carry out spot checks on shops that may be selling knives.”

She added that there had been a reduction in funding for community groups that tackle the knife –crime culture outside of the Met. “I fear there has been a decline in

funding for community groups. A lot of groups that are doing this kind of work are having their funding cut.

We are clear it’s not an issue the police can deal with on their own,” she said.

With burglaries, Southwark had 3,278 cases reported in 2016-17, compared with 2,952 in 2015-16.

Conviction rates also fell from 6.3 per cent to 5.3 per cent.

The Met has yet to publish up-todate figures for crime rates per council ward. But it was revealed earlier this year that in Dulwich and Herne Hill, burglaries had been falling. Analysis of insurance quotes by Moneysupermarket.com, published in The Guardian, showed that Dulwich Village ward felt a 29 per cent reduction in burglaries between October 2015 and September 2016.

Last week’s release from the Met also placed Southwark as having the third worst overall crime rate of any London borough for 2016-17 (not taking into account population size).

Westminster had the highest overall crime rates: 54,977, which can be attributed to the excessive levels of “theft and handling cases” (30,367).

Overall crimes rates in Lambeth and Southwark were 37,844 and 35,479 respectively. Camden had 33,378 in total, and Tower Hamlets had 33,258.

A RUNNER is taking on 50 marathons in 50 days to raise money for charity.

Paul Corey will end his 50-marathon streak when he crosses the finish line of the London Marathon on Sunday.

The 25-year-old, who turns 26 a day before the event, decided to take on the gruelling ’50 in 50’ challenge to raise £10,000 for Cancer Focus, a charity based in his native Ireland.

But his girlfriend, Rachel Franklin, said his dream almost ended when he was hospitalised for two weeks in January/February this year.

“He had a pretty serious thyroid condition and he was told to give up the endurance sports,” said the 24-year-old.

“While he was in hospital he was lying there and decided that he was definitely going to do it, so he just went for it.

“He didn’t have any training and the first ten days were the hardest thing he has ever had to do. His legs were double the

size they should’ve been and he got shin splints and everything.”

Fortunately, things picked up for Paul, who runs his own fireplace business, and he is now nearing the end of his challenge, with just three more marathons to go after today (Thursday).

“On day nine he ran a 4.15 marathon and from day ten he just got stronger and stronger, and faster and faster,” said Rachel, a support manager.

“He’s been aiming to do each marathon between 4.15 and 4.30.

“The thing he is tackling is the sheer boredom of having to be alone each day doing a marathon, but the good thing is lots of people have come out to give their support.”

Rachel and Paul are both members of London City Runners, who meet in Druid Street three times a week.

Pub damaged by smoke in fire

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: The Albert Arms pub was left smokedamaged after a fire in the early hours of Good Friday.

Six fire engines and 35 fire officers were called to the pub in Garden Row at about 5am.

Station manager Stuart Grout was at the scene. He said: “On my arrival the

pub was heavily smoke logged and the fire was still in the basement.

“Firefighters worked hard to extinguish it. Fortunately all the residents were evacuated from the pub and the properties above it, so there are no reported injuries.”

The fire was over by about 7am. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

St George’s won’t drag on BOROUGH

BOROUGH MARKET and St George the Martyr Church are holding events to celebrate St George’s Day this Sunday, April 23.

Borough Market will host a festival of food, music, storytelling and theatre from 12pm to 4pm on Sunday, with a visit from the market’s Catalonian friends to mark the day.

Both cultures will be celebrated, and those who go along can expect to learn more about English and Catalan traditions and cooking.

There will be free cookery demonstration kitchens throughout the day and Folk Dance Remixed will be performing with their fusion of folk and hiphop dance. Castellers of London will also show off their skills by building a human tower on the day.

St George the Martyr Church kicked off its celebrations earlier this week, which will continue until Monday.

Today, Thursday, there will also be a performance of the folk play St George and the Dragon at 3.45pm in Red Cross Garden, and 4.30pm at Borough Market.

At 7pm there will be a photo exhibition launch and poetry live in the church crypt.

On Friday, April 21, there will be a search for dragons hidden in the borough.

This will begin and end at the piazza beside St George the Martyr church.

Anyone wishing to take part should meet at 11.15am on the day for an

11.30am start and tickets must be booked in advance.

At 1pm there will be a Water City Music concert at the church with violinist Rosie Judge, pianist Lasha Utalishvili, and children of Halsville School, in a programme music by Bach, Elgar, Kreisler and more.

On Saturday, there will be another dragon quest beginning in the same place at 11.15am for 11.30am. Again, tickets will need to be booked in advance. At 1pm there will be an hour of music and dancing at St George’s Cathedral and at 2.15pm a street parade will take place from St George’s Cathedral to St George the Martyr.

At 6pm the Martyr’s Voices will perform a Choral Evensong at St George the Martyr Church, and at 7pm there will be a vigil at Crossbones Graveyard.

And finally, on Monday at 6.30pm there will be a celebration of the solemnity of St George at St George’s Cathedral.

HI ROBOT Hermes trials self-driving machines in Southwark

SELF-DRIVING robots could soon be seen collecting parcels in Southwark.

Hermes will use a number of Starship Technologies’ six-wheeled robots to collect parcels in the borough as part of a trial.

Earlier this year, Starship Technologies teamed up with Just Eat to launch the world’s first online food delivery using a selfdriving robot.

Initially, the Hermes trial will allow the delivery firm to offer limited 30-minute time slots for the collection of parcels, either for items being returned to retailers or sent by small businesses or consumers via myHermes.

But in the future, the robots could offer Hermes greater scheduling and tracking capabilities.

Each vehicle is 55cm high by 70cm long and incorporates a secured compartment where parcels with a maximum weight of 10kg can be transported, accessible to consumers via a link generated by a smartphone app.

They have six wheels and can travel at speeds up to 4mph per hour.

The robots can be used within a two-mile radius from a control centre, where the vehicles are loaded and charged.

The aim is for the robots to be 99 per cent autonomous in the future, and for them to always be connected to a human operator via the internet and GPS. In the future, one operator could monitor several robots at the same time and also take control of the robots if required.

Nan aged 86 killed in ‘ferocious attack’ in her Borough home

DETECTIVES LAST week made a fresh appeal into the 32year-long murder investigation of an elderly grandmother, killed in a ‘ferocious attack’ in her home.

Clara Kirton, was 86 when she was found dead by her son, and with her throat slashed, at her home in Great Suffolk Street on the Sunday morning of November 17, 1985.

Despite many enquiries over the years, her murder has never been solved. But after Mrs Kirton's family requested a review of the case, detectives have offered a £20,000 reward, which they hope may now encourage someone to come forward.

The substantial amount of money is available for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of Mrs Kirton's killer.

Mrs Kirton’s body was found by her youngest son Brian, then aged 42, in the lounge of her ground floor flat of the Victoria Buildings. He immediately alerted his sister Joyce and her husband and they called police and an ambulance.

Mrs Kirton was pronounced dead at the scene at 10am.

A post-mortem examination found she died from inhalation of blood and crush injuries to her face and neck. The attack had most likely taken place between 4pm and 6pm the previous afternoon.

She had a number of wounds to her face and massive slash injuries to her throat.

“It was a long time ago but such an awful incident would stick in your mind if you were local to the area at the time. If you have any information, no matter how small, please come forward.

“Maybe you were worried about telling police at the time. But now, more than 30 years on, you might feel able to approach us. We hope the reward on offer will also encourage people to contact us.”

DI Stansfield added: “We don’t know for sure what the motive was but the evidence suggests someone made their way inside Mrs Kirton's insecure flat and she disturbed them as they searched for cash to steal.

The extreme violence used against her gave the original investigation team cause to believe the killer may have been under the influence of drink or drugs.

“Whatever the motive, Mrs Kirton's family are desperate for answers and we would ask anyone who can help to come forward.”

FORMER LIB Dem MP Simon Hughes has told the News he is determined to win back his old constituency from Labour’s Neil Coyle.

Mr Hughes, who was chosen as the Lib Dem’s prospective parliamentary candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark last year, told the News he believed his party could win back the seat this year.

His comments came after Prime Minister Theresa May announced a general election for June 8 during a surprise statement at Downing Street on Tuesday morning (April 18).

“We think we can win,” said Mr Hughes, who served as MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark for 32 years.

“We don’t take it for granted at all but we will pull out all the stops and do everything we can to win and, if we do, it will stand us in good stead for next year and the local council elections, where we think we can win a significant number of seats back and either win back the control of the council or make a big dent.

“The team are really very keen; there’s great excitement in the camp.”

In response, Mr Coyle, who unseated Mr Hughes in a dramatic result during the 2015 general election, said he would be “fighting for every vote”.

“If the Lib Dems want to choose someone fresh and new they should do that; if they want to choose someone who voted for the bedroom tax, allowed tuition fees to be tripled and didn’t support equal marriage then that’s their choice but I don’t think it’s the best strategy,” he said.

“The Lib Dems don’t offer much of an alternative to me. I make no apology for standing up for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

“Our borough voted for Remain and I have spoken out when I have disagreed with my party [on Brexit] after it has already caused damage to our community and businesses operating here.”

Asked whether a Lib Dem/Tory coalition would be likely, considering the Tories are likely to improve on their current majority, he added: “It looks like the Tories will pick up some seats and the

Lib Dems are optimistic about picking up [Tory] seats in the west of England.”

Helen Hayes, Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, said she found it “astonishing” that Theresa May had made “such a dramatic U-turn” on the subject of the general election.

“It looks to me like once again the Tories are putting the interests of their own party before the interests of the country,” she told the News.

“As a member of the Labour party, we welcome the

attacks” by Neil against Corbyn, such as asking why Labour MPs had not been given a Brexit briefing on the day Article 50 was triggered, and why the party’s media team was allegedly failing to provide quick responses to journalists.

It had been reported by a national paper on Saturday that Neil could face losing the party whip – the highest punishment taken against MPs. Speaking to the News before Tuesday’s general election announcement, said: “It wasn’t criticism as much as questions that I

‘Disciplinary reports blown out of proportion’ says MP

REPORTS THAT Bermondsey and Old Southwark’s Neil Coyle could face disciplinary action from the Labour Party leadership are “blown out of proportion”, the MP has said.

Neil has said he doesn’t feel anything will come of a formal complaint made

by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s office manager, Karie Murphy.

According to a leaked email, Murphy had complained of “unjustified

attempts to quieten other MPs down,” he said.

“There was recently one PLP meeting where one of Jeremy’s staff had a go at me for asking a question.

“They build people up as scapegoats.

Their infighting goes over trying to address policy issues, like what’s going on with Brexit, or low conviction rates with the police.”

A spokeswoman for Jeremy Corbyn said they did not wish to comment.

Neil added: “They are trying to shut anyone down who suggests we couldn’t be doing better than a 20 per

cent deficit in the polls. Or anyone who suggests that the sun doesn’t shine out of certain area of Jeremy’s anatomy.

“The idea of me losing the party whip is 100 per cent unrealistic. The only MP that has happened to [since 2015] was MP Simon Danczuk, and that’s because he was in trouble with the police.

“I’ve asked Nick Brown [Labour chief whip] for clarification and I’m hoping to see him today or tomorrow.

But he hasn’t been in touch. I think that’s an indication it’s been blown out of proportion.”

A TOWER Bridge Road businessman has restated the case that the Bricklayers Arms roundabout “needs a tube station” to go with the planned Bakerloo Line Extension.

“Tower Bridge Road businesses are struggling at the moment, and footfall to the area is one of the main things.

“Businesses set up here and some close after six or seven months. We’re all independent shops, there’s no big names.

“The rents are similar to areas that are fully developed, but there’s no transport here. I even find it difficult to recruit staff because the transport links at night are very poor, yet we’re in Zone 1 and SE1.”

TfL’s preferred option for the £3billion Bakerloo extension – due for completion by 2029 – is to have two stations located along Old Kent Road, with another in New Cross and a fourth in Lewisham Town Centre.

The (TBRA) campaign’s online and paper petitions have gained over 700 signatures, and is support has also come from Southwark Chamber of Commerce.

The call for a station was also made by the Bricklayers Arms tenants’ and residents’ association, whose chair, Peter Wright, argued the case at a Full Council meeting on March 22.

Peter told councillors that if TfL could not be persuaded to locate their ventilation and emergency exit shaft away from the Bricklayers, then “we would ask that the council consider and press for an underground station be built there, so that local people can benefit from it”.

Southwark’s Liberal Democrats have also been working with Suhel to bang the drum for a station at Bricklayers.

In a design and access statement, Michael Trentham Architects said: “The existing building is unprecedented in its context and stands out from the terrace in Albion Street, breaking the rhythm of the street elevation. The existing openings (particularly at ground-floor level) are small and are therefore more residential than commercial in appearance. “[…] The main objective was to create

a simple, and elegant building that is rooted in place, informed by the existing context that also continues the modern urban vernacular encouraged by Southwark council.”

The architect also stated that the proposed building would not obstruct the views of buildings in the area, such as the Finnish and Norwegian churches, and would preserve their historical value and the character of the area.

The Year 5 class from Harris Primary Academy were welcomed into the wilderness to take part in the park’s Cunning Running activity day, on April 5.

EIGHTY-EIGHT per cent of children set to start primary school in Southwark this September have been offered a place at their top choice.

Figures released by the Pan London Admissions Board on National Offer Day on Tuesday, April 18, revealed that every child in Southwark had been offered a place at one their preferred primary schools.

The figures showed that 88.34 per cent of children in Southwark secured a place at their first choice school, while 7.49 per cent were offered a place at their second preference.

They also showed that 1.67 per cent were offered their third choice, 0.41 per cent offered their fourth, and 0.28 per cent offered their fifth.

Southwark received 3,118 (98.5 per cent) of applications online this year, and overall, 97.5 per cent of applicants secured a place at one of their top three schools.

Across the whole of London, 86 per cent of children got into their first choice primary school, and 96 per cent got into one of their top three.

Primary school offers were sent out to all parents on Tuesday.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children and schools, said: “I know that this can be a very stressful time for parents so I am pleased that once again every child has been found a place and the vast majority of children will be going to their first preference of school.

“Our admissions team will now be working closely with families who have any concerns about their school placement so that all families have a place they are happy with by September.”

Southwark Council leader Peter John, who is also deputy chair of London Councils and executive member with responsibility for schools, said: “Boroughs are clearly working effectively with local primary schools across the capital to put a variety of strategies in place to expand school capacity where needed, giving London’s children the best possible chance of getting a preferred school place and having a successful start to their education.

“However boroughs need longterm funding arrangements that truly reflect the costs shouldered by London schools.

“As councils have the legal duty to provide school places, we strongly believe that Government should work more closely with us to deliver the school places needed by children across the capital as well as devolving funding for the free school programme.”

Under the Pan-London Admissions scheme, parents fill out a single application form, even if they are applying for schools in more than one borough.

This ensures admissions are coordinated between authorities and is effective in reducing the number of pupils receiving multiple offers or no offers at all.

A PAIR of talented young dancers ranked among the top in the world at a global Irish dancing competition.

Maisie Ryan, eleven, Nancy Timon, fifteen, and AmberRose Murphy, nineteen, flew out to Dublin to represent Deborah Whelan Dance School at the week-long World Irish Dance Championships.

Amber-Rose, from Dulwich, and Maisie, from Rotherhithe, both came home with medals after being placed 35th and 47th respectively.

Thousands of dancers competed in the first two rounds, before the best 50 in each age group were recalled to dance again and be placed.

As well as the 2017 wage rate of £9.75, staff at various Picturehouseowned cinemas, including in Brixton, Hackney and Piccadilly Circus, are demanding improved working conditions.

The Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union (BECTU), which represents the staff, say the workers also wants: • Projectionists and supervisors to earn more than the basic London Living Wage (LLW) salary • Employers with less than one year’s experience with the company to receive sick pay that matches the LLW, rather than the statutory minimum • Maternity and paternity leave to equal staff’s basic pay, not just the statutory minimum wage BECTU’s general secretary Joey Morrissey said: “East Dulwich staff are the latest to join [the LLW campaign]. SOUTHWARK: Three lottery tickets worth a total of over £2m remain unclaimed in the borough.

A last-ditch effort is on to find who owns the first ticket, worth £1m from the EuroMillions Mega Week draw on October 25, 2016, with the UK Millionaire Maker code JMDB 77565, as it has to be claimed by April 23.

A second unclaimed ticket is a £1m Lotto Millionaire Raffle prize from the Lotto draw on November 16 last year.

The winning Millionaire Raffle code is PINK 7016 6708 and must be claimed

by May 15. There is also a yet-to-beclaimed EuroMillions prize of £61,152.10 from January 24 this year.

The winning numbers were 1, 5, 7, 17, 23 with Lucky Star numbers 3 and 8.

The winner matched five main numbers and one Lucky Star number. This prize has to be claimed by July 23.

Man escapes blaze

EAST DULWICH: Four fire engines and around 20 fire officers were called to a blaze at a block of flats in Pytchley Road.

The Brigade was called at 11.12am on April 12. Part of a flat, in the first floor of Melbreak House, was damaged. A man left the property before the arrival of the brigade and was taken to hospital.

The cause is under investigation.

A FORMER Bermondsey biscuit factory worker has celebrated her whopping 104th birthday with a party thrown by her carers.

Cake, bubbly and bunting were all laid on for Gladys Gorringe as she

celebrated on April 10 at the Rose Court care home in Rotherhithe.

Gladys, who suffers from dementia and cognitive impairment, was born in Walthamstow in 1913, and moved to Bermondsey when she got married.

She is the oldest of 58 residents at the Anchor-run care home in Lower Road, and has been a widow since

1966.

She spent her working life at the Peek Freans factory in Drummond Road.

Sisters Rose and Winifred were also able to join the party, as well as nephews, nieces and grandchildren, spanning five generations of her family.

Motorbike anchors to stop thefts EAST DULWICH

MOTORCYCLISTS IN East Dulwich have been encouraged to apply for free ‘anchors’, as a unique way of warding off growing numbers of bike thefts.

Bike owners need to apply to their local ward councillors and arrange for an appointment to have an anchor installed in their driveways.

Lib Dem councillor for East Dulwich ward, James Barber, said: “There has been an increase in motorbike thefts, and

often the stolen bikes are then used to commit further crimes. The anchors need to be attached to something substantial like a concrete block.

“We have had 25 installed so far in my ward. We’re the only ward in the borough that’s installing them, and we have yet to have one stolen. It’s been really successful and we’re looking to install lots more.”

A pot of £10,000 has been provided by the council, and anyone who wants one for their driveway need only apply directly to Cllr Barber, and the council will send out an application form. The

applicant pays nothing. “They cost £500 to have them installed, with the concrete to be lain and the contractor to do a quick survey,” James said.

“But when you factor in the cost of losing a bike, and the investigation that needs to be carried out by the police, it actually saves money to the public purse as a crime-prevention scheme.”

The anchors are currently only available in East Dulwich because James and his ward colleagues are the only councillors who have asked for funding from the council. Email Cllr Barber on james.barber@southwark.gov.uk.

Care home manager Juliana Ahunanya said she was “very proud and lucky” to have shared this special moment with Gladys and her family.

Mr Changhui Yu from Latona Road was arrested by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators on August 16 last year.

He was caught red handed whilst collecting parcels containing tobacco from a mailbox in New Cross – one of eight which he rented under phoney names for delivery of the tobacco.

Yu, aged 50, appeared at Croydon Crown Court for sentencing on April 6, having pleaded guilty.

The court heard that Yu ignored a previous warning from HMRC and continued to run his criminal operation.

Officers seized 130,240 cigarettes from Yu’s mailboxes between November 2014 and September 2016, worth £22,074 in excise duty.

At his home in Peckham, investigators discovered packaging and labels linked to a further 40 deliveries, worth a further £10,147 in unpaid duty.

Her Honour, Judge Elizabeth Smaller, handed Yu the sixteen month sentence for the charge of fraudulent evasion of tobacco duty.

An HMRC spokesperson said: “Yu ignored warnings from HMRC and wrongly assumed using false identities to conduct his illegal operation would protect him. We will continue to pursue criminals involved in the sale of illicit tobacco.”

A FORMER South Bank University academic is asking locals to get in touch and help him research Robert Browning School, for a new book due for publication this year.

Dr Alan Parkinson, 67, told the News he was keen to hear from former pupils or staff who can offer their recollections, or contribute copies of old books, photos and school reports.

Robert Browning Primary School in King and Queen Street first opened as

‘King and Queen Street School’ in 1883, before changing its name in 1933.

Dr Parkinson said: “I have done a number of books on communities in Bermondsey and Walworth, so it was my next stop to do this school.

“I have also done projects with my students, artists and film makers about Charlie Chaplain, and a project about Charles Dickens which was shown at the Unicorn Theatre.”

Why it’s important to know if you have TB

IN SOUTHWARK, your local NHS is keen to identify and treat anyone at risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB). This is an infectious disease that can affect almost any part of the body, but affects the lungs in 50 per cent of cases. TB can become very serious if left untreated.

TB is caused by bacteria (germs) which are spread through the air.

TB bacteria can sleep in your body, often for many years, without making you ill. This is called ‘latent’ TB. Latent TB is not infectious.

Sometimes the latent TB bacteria can ‘wake up’ and make you ill.

This is called ‘active’ TB, and when you hear people talk about TB, this is usually what they mean.

Symptoms of active TB include a persistent cough; fever and heavy night sweats; loss of weight for no obvious reason; a general sense of tiredness and being unwell; and

coughing up blood. Only half of all cases of TB affect the lungs, so you may have it if you are suffering general malaise without a cough or breathlessness. Latent TB does not have any symptoms.

If you have latent TB, there is a one in 10 chance it will become active TB. Latent TB is more likely to become active if you are a smoker, so if you are diagnosed with latent TB and are a smoker, you would be advised to quit smoking to reduce the risk of developing the more serious active TB. There are countries in the world where TB is more common and these include many African countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Greenland, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papau New Guinea, Pakistan, Nepal and Thailand. If you have previously lived in one of these countries you have a greater risk of carrying TB. If you are between 16 – 35 years of age and have come from any of these countries in the last five years, we recommend that you get a test which can tell whether you have TB. This is important as you may have caught TB before you

arrived in the UK. Getting tested involves a quick blood test and a few simple questions. Selected pharmacists in Southwark can refer you to a local hospital to have this done. National prize for our work with young people

WELL DONE to NHS Southwark CCG’s Engagement and Commissioning Teams, who were finalists in two categories in the Patient Experience Network National Awards (PENNA) last month.

They were runners-up in the Commissioning for Patient Experience award for their work in Championing the Voice of Children and Young People, as well as being finalists in the Championing the Public category.

Although they were not outright winners, taking second place was a fantastic achievement and brought national recognition to the CCG’s commitment to innovative and successful engagement with local people.

Head of Membership, Engagement and Equalities Rosemary Watts said: “We are proud of the work we have done with young people in Southwark and I am very pleased that we have had this opportunity to showcase our activities with others. The PENNA ceremony was a great event and I would like to thank everyone who supported us to be

Simple screening test saves lives APRIL IS Bowel Cancer Awareness month. Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer.

100 people in Southwark are diagnosed with it every year.

If you are aged between 60 and 74, you will receive a free test kit in the post. This kit aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage. If bowel cancer is caught early you have more than a 90% chance of successful treatment.

The kit is used to collect a tiny poo sample and all you have to do is return it in the envelope provided. So if you receive a test kit, please do send it back – it could save your life – and encourage older relatives and friends to do the same.

If you have not received a kit in the last two years and are aged over 60, please call 0800 707 6060 to request one. You can also call if you need an additional test kit.

Bowel screening is only for people without symptoms. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, don’t wait for your test kit – see your GP straight away: • Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo • A change in bowel habit lasting three weeks or more • Unexplained weight loss • Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason • A pain or lump in your tummy

As with many cancers, bowel cancer may be prevented by having a healthier lifestyle.

According to Bowel Cancer UK, around half of all bowel cancers could be prevented by eating a healthier diet; taking more exercise; cutting down on alcohol; and stopping smoking.

TRANSPORT FOR London is pioneering several measures to make our buses cleaner and greener - and many will say "About time too" given the levels of pollution in parts of our city.

One initiative that caught my eye is a trial of wireless charging technology that allows the batteries of electric-diesel hybrid buses to be recharged while they pass by a charging unit or are at a bus stop.

This will not only extend the range of the electric motor but lead to less use of the bus's diesel back-up engine.

While there will be debates over whether the cost of this cutting-edge technology makes it an economical option just yet, we can be sure that further developments are likely to reduce the costs. In time, new technological solutions such as this will make our public transport lesspolluting and lead to cleaner air in our city.

We need three tube stations, not two MANY WILL be aware that TfL are consulting on an extension of the Bakerloo line along the Old Kent Road.

They are asking residents where the two planned stations should be located. We believe there should be three stations - the first being at Bricklayer's Arms.

The present suggestion is a first stop at Tesco Old Kent Road. But this is a distance of some 3km from the Elephant, some three times longer than the average on the line.

It would require a ventilation shaft at either Bricklayer's or Faraday Gardens (depending on which route they use). If they need a shaft at Bricklayer's then build the station as well.

The junction is a natural intersection for residents of East Walworth and Bermondsey.

Thousands would use it every day meaning that we could reduce the number of bus services and improve air quality.

Southwark Labour have not

grasped the importance of winning this campaign. They seem more worried about the ventilation shaft not going on Faraday Gardens (not bothered about it affecting residents around the Bricklayer's though). The shaft will cause much building disruption and give nothing to residents. We need this tube stop.

ON BEHALF of all the volunteers with the South London MND Group (SLG) we thank the family and friends for the kind donations totalling £1,952.60 to our group in memory of Yos Arif, it is most gratefully accepted.

The SLG is committed to supporting people in South London with MND, their carers and families. To raise awareness of MND thus ensuring that people living with this disease receive the very best professional care and support. We assist with MND Association campaigns to influence policy-makers in South London. We hold Bi-monthly meetings for people with MND, carers and friends to attend to meet others in a similar situation who can share their experiences and knowledge. We also offer financial help particularly when let down by Social Services.

Just to give you an idea of hour our funds are used we recently received a request from the co-ordinator of the specialised MND Care Centre clinic in Kings College hospital to find a new wheelchair as their current one being passed its sell by date. We were astounded that the NHS didn’t provide this and therefore more than happy to

agree to their request. We have also assisted with moving costs, providing electronic equipment, various aids, various types of lifts and wet rooms, to name just a few.

HE PRIME Minister has called a General Election. It has been set for Thursday 8th June 2017.

The way the Electoral Register is compiled changed a few years ago. Now you must individually resister to vote.

If you are not registered you will not be able to be part of the decision of who represents you in Parliament. This is important because many big decisions are going to be made over the coming few years, decisions which will affect you and your community.

The Government is planning to bring in a new way of paying for education, which will punish Southwark Schools. Despite every disadvantage London Primary and Secondary Schools have confounded expectations and are among the best in the country. All without selection, which only serves to give preference to middle class children over everyone else.

Decisions will be taken over the future of the NHS. It is no secret that our health care sector is in crisis, ambulance waiting times are going up, waits for GPs are getting longer and so are the waiting lists for operations.

The situation is so bad the Government has chosen to abandon their own targets.

This Government has already made its position clear around self-employed people – the skilled and talented entrepreneurs grafting day in day out to earn a living through their creativity and ingenuity – the Government wanted to raise your tax.

Decisions will be made over further cuts to Local Authority funding – choking our hard working councillors who are desperately trying to provide social care services, child care services, housing and good public spaces.

This election is important because the Government has few plans for the housing crisis in Southwark –they happily subsidise well off couples while our children cannot afford to get on the ladder and make it harder for the council to provide good housing for all.

Central to this argument will be our future as a nation in the modern world. This government wants a hard Brexit without regard for the friends and family in our diverse and vibrant community, their jobs or their livelihoods. Even if you voted for Brexit – you didn’t vote for economic turmoilwhich is all a hard Brexit will deliver.

Your vote does count. Your voice should be heard alongside the rest of your community.

This is how we change the direction of the country and this is how we resist the small minded and divisive politics of this Government.

Every election is important. In Southwark we are blessed with some of the hardest working Members of Parliament in Harriet Harman, Neil Coyle and Helen Hayes. They work tirelessly for you, as do Councillors and my fellow Members of the London Assembly. Let’s support their efforts. Let’s send our MPs back to Westminster to fight for us all.

Arthouse1 shows

KATHERINE LUBAR and Asaki Kan have brought together seven artists, whose interaction with

shadows is structural. Inside the Shadow is an exhibition concerned with form – despite that beguiling word – shadow.

‘Inside’ is a concept that is only possible through form and space, so “inside the shadow” suggests a preoccupation with looking deeply at shadows, pondering the essence of their existence; an existence bound to our own. For the artists of Inside the Shadow, this isn’t a preoccupation with presence or appearance, but a penetrating search for the articulations which disrupt light and space, reconfiguring it. Much of the search made by these artists within their artworks, happens in close proximity to intimate interiors, personal landscapes and their everyday environment, even if those locations are only hinted at or given a cursory glance in the work. Time is also an important theme for many of these

Until 29 April 2017 Coming soon is ‘Eccentric Geometric’, a tightly curated group show that brings together a number of artists, all with collective concerns that so interestingly justify the show title.

Conventional ‘geometric’ issues such as pattern, shape, repetition, line and spatial relationships are ‘Eccentrically’ understood. Whilst acknowledging overlaps with PostMinimalism, the curators, Deb Covell and Jo McGonigal, expose explorations of geometry that reveal the complexities and quirks of our lived experience. These artists deploy the principles of geometric order but don’t offer the simplicity of visual sensation alone… there is an empathy with the materiality and physicality of a lived life.

In May of 2016 Ceci made a short trip to the North of Argentina to visit the towns of Purmamarca, Humahuaca, Tilcara and Iruya. During this time she decided to only take a photo when something made her feel an emotion. In this exhibition she invites you to share your own emotional response to her beautiful images by writing your feelings on a post-it note and pinning it to her photo board.

Albee play gets your goat As the more astute among you will have gathered, even from the meagre information offered up by the title, the piece in question is about a goat.

Well, more accurately it is about a man who falls in love with a goat, and goes on to 'know' the said goat in the 'biblical sense'. I'd rather like to avoid going in to more detail, it probably couldn't be printed anyway.

What I can say, without fear of receiving abuse from 'Offended from Camberwell', is that Edward Albee’s 'The Goat' is excellent, funny and

oddly thought-provoking. Damien Lewis is hilarious as the confused beau whose domestic bliss is torn apart by his desire for a different kind of bliss altogether.

The piece works so well I think because of the tension between a wife and son's rage and disgust, and Lewis's matter of fact delivery.

Indeed, I found the uncomfortable feelings I was experiencing amplified the giggles. Each time I thought we'd hit the bottom of the depravity well, the cast magically plumbed new depths, down and down to the glorious, horrific ending.

So, if you feel that you need something a little different, more challenging perhaps, get along and enjoy the wonderful absurdity that only interspecies romance can bring.

Southwark Council (“the council”) adopted its cemetery strategy, in 2012, which sets out the council’s commitment to local burial in the borough. As part of this strategy, the council intends to develop an area of land in Camberwell New Cemetery to make it more suitable for burial use. Southwark’s Cemetery Strategy can be viewed in its entirety online (www.southwark.gov.uk/cemeteriesplans). To improve access to the development site the council needs to create a path across some existing grave space. The council also made a petition to the Consistory Court because the works will be on consecrated land. A faculty was issued by the court on 21 February 2017. Now that both planning & faculty permissions have been granted, memorials listed below will need to be removed.

Lieu says “the sport has grown massively alongside the growth of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)”. MMA has become increasingly mainstream with the rise of its most famous star, Ireland’s ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor.

The event at The O2 was the seventh instalment on the Muay Thai Grand Prix (MTGP) circuit, and Lieu says he is now “setting his sights overseas” after his latest victory.

Lieu explained how he got into the sport and where he sees it going in the next few years.

“I’ve lived and breathed Muay Thai all my life,” he said. “I am a fighter first and foremost. I live in the gym and when I

am not training I am coaching and helping others.

“The sport has grown massively alongside the growth of MNA and the always-popular boxing.

“A lot of times I hear people talk about MMA and mention wrestling and Muay Thai. The more times people hear the words Muay Thai I think that’s when they’re more willing to try it.

“That’s promoted with social media, people are seeing it more and asking questions. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next five years.”

“So it was a massive finish to the game where we had to just hold off, stay tight and compact and not let them get back again so we finished with the three points, which is what we did. It was a great feeling at the end.”

FISHER BOSS Dean Harrison said “the club totally needs investors” after Monday’s 6-2 defeat to Crowborough Athletic left them on the brink of relegation.

Fisher go into their final two games in last place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table.

Fisher Athletic were wound up in 2009, before members of Fisher Supporters’ Trust established AFC Fisher, which is funded mostly with annual subscriptions.

The new club initially played at Dulwich Hamlet’s Champion Hill before moving to their new ground St Paul’s in Rotherhithe at the start of this season, and they won their first game there 4-0.

But all that optimism has faded as their current reality set in.

Harrison told Kentish Football: “It’s a real disappointment. Look at the set-up here, it’s a fantastic set-up. You’ve got everything that you want in the ground.

It’s great for training, the supporters are fantastic. They’ve been behind us all the way and it would just be a real shame [to be relegated].

“But at the end of the day you’ve got to look at the situation that possibly it’s not working how the club’s run because they’re fighting relegation battles every year.

“Maybe someone somewhere has got to say someone’s got to put some money into it because everyone else is. Even a month or so ago we knew the clubs around us, at least two or three of them, had pumped money into signing players and we’ve got nothing still.

“The club totally needs investors. I love the fans and it’s great and I understand all the supporter-owned thing but as a board and as the running of the club, I don’t think it’s working without money.

“I think everyone knows at this level now you need money whether people like it or not, it’s a fact. At step-five football there is money being pumped in so if you don’t compete, it’s the same at any level, you’re going to have a problem.”

Crowborough were four goals up within 47 minutes, before Luke Haidarovic scored twice. But the away side got two more as Fisher lost their 23rd league game this season.

Fisher are four points behind fourth-last Beckenham Town as they face relegation to the First Division, the tenth tier of English football.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK FOR MILLWALL’S BELLINGHAM KICKSTARS PL KICKS

n partnership with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme have come together to start a new initiative to engage more women and girls in playing football called Bellingham Kickstars PL Kicks.

Engaging more woman and girls into sport has been a hot topic for many years with the likes of the Premier League and Sport England trying to make a big push over the last few years.

According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, by the age of 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys. In regards to girls in sport The Premier League Kicks programme has two main objectives which are to increase the number of women and girls playing football on a regular basis and to increase the opportunities for women and girls to develop skills and confidence and progress within the pathway as a player, coach or an official.

The Millwall Premier League Kicks Bellingham Kick Stars was started by the Rio Ferdinand Foundation last year October which is a weekly football session for girls only. The aim of the sessions is to offer inclusive technique and skills coaching as well as regular matches against other community groups and football clubs. With the session already going from strength to strength the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme were then approached to work in collaboration with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation to help with the running of the session.

The session has continued to grow with the number of

participants in attendance, quality of football during the sessions and overall commitment from the girls all helping the session blossoms over time.

Recently, the participants were treated to a trip to go and watch the Millwall Lionesses first team in action against the Everton Ladies first team at the new home of Fisher FC which is also the home of the Millwall Lionesses. The game ended with a 2-1 win to the Lionesses Charlie Devlin scored the winning goal on her debut which saw the Lionesses claim their first win in the FA Women's Super League Spring Series.

Lead coach on the session Thomas Edwards who works on the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme said of the day: ‘From our Lionesses match if can tell you that young women who attend our session really saw for the first-time professional women playing football. The group made many comments on the quality of contact made with the ball in all aspects from passing to shooting and the physical aspect of the game in terms of stamina and aggression. Overall the experience was eye opening for all those in attendance. I know in the ranks of the group we have some who aspire to become professional footballers and hopefully we can aid them on that journey.’

On Friday the 7th of April, the girls were then taken to East London to compete in the Active Communities Network ‘Can We Kick It Tournament’ in association with East London Ladies which saw teams from Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Mole Valley Girls competing. The purpose of the

event was to raise the profile and importance of girls’ sports participation. The day was a major success with great football, enjoyment and sportsmanship on display from all in attendance.

Earl McNeish, Programme Manager at the Rio Ferdinand Foundation commented: ‘Collectively the Bellingham Kickstars PL Kicks team all represented themselves in an outstanding manner, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch through creating a great sense of community cohesion amongst fellow teams, despite rival difference at the beginning of the tournament. I witnessed great leadership via Thomas to enable the team to achieve as best as they could during the tournament.

All in all the female participants came away from the day’s event fully satisfied with being a part of a great successful sporting event that promotes females engagement.’

Sapphire Elliot, a participant on the session said of watching the Millwall Lionesses game: ‘After seeing the Lioness' game, I was not only motivated to keep on doing what I love, but I was also inspired to work harder in order to play to a standard as high as them one day. It was such a privilege to be able to experience such great football.’

Like Oxford, the Dons season is virtually over but they still went to Southend and won 2-1, meaning Millwall kept their place in sixth.

The Lions will also have the memory of what happened last season when Oxford won 2-0 at The Den in front of the Sky Sports cameras in the first leg of the Football League Trophy semifinal.

Oxford reached the final of that competition again this season before losing 2-1 to Coventry City at Wembley.

Michael Appleton’s side still had a shot at a top-six finish when they got back to league action after that disappointment but two defeats and a draw dashed those hopes.

Appleton has also had to deal with disciplinary problems concerning his talented midfielder Liam Sercombe, who has been left out for the last two fixtures and may not feature at The Den on Saturday.

Oxford will still be dangerous opponents and will be eager to get the results to guarantee a top-half finish in League One after promotion from the fourth tier last season.

Millwall also know exactly what they need to do and could actually seal a play-off spot with a game to spare if they beat Oxford and other results go their way this weekend.

But such are the fine margins now, if they lose they could drop to eighth and find their season all but over in April.

It wasn’t all in the one direction, and if O’Brien and Wallace were submitting their entries for Millwall goal of the season, Tom King made one of the saves of the season in the first half. It was pure instinct, the goalkeeper showing repaid reflexes to tip the ball over after it had come off the shin of Shaun Hutchinson, who was trying to clear a cross.

Millwall comfortably saw the game out as attention focused on what was happening in The Dockers Stand for much of the second half.

It became apparent someone was in real trouble as fans were cleared from an area in the lower rows. Soon medics from St John’s Ambulance were performing CPR, which lasted for more than 30 minutes. The club released a statement shortly after the game to say that the man, a season-ticket holder, was responsive as

he was taken to hospital.

Some Millwall fans had entered the pitch in injury-time urging referee Graham Salisbury to end the game, and defender Hutchinson said the players were aware of what was unfolding.

He said: “We could kind of see what was going on. I don’t know what the rules are if it’s stopped early. Does it mean we have to play again?

“If it had been abandoned there would have been a lot of people heading to the exits, blocking the way.

“Hopefully he will be okay because it’s very sad to see something like that happening.

“What I do know is that a football stadium is not the worst place for something like this to happen, there are a lot of people around who can help you.

“I saw straight away he had a lot of people around him.”

Meanwhile, Millwall have won home game left in the regular League One season, against Oxford this weekend.

Hutchinson has played the last five games after his injury-disrupted season.

“I’m just trying to keep myself injuryfree, I’ve had a lot of them this season,” he said. “It’s good to take every game as

it comes.

“I’m feeling fresh, I’m feeling good.”

MIDFIELDER BEN Thompson felt that Millwall played some of their best football of the season in their 10 defeat at Fleetwood Town on Monday.

The Lions tore into their opponents from the first moments and should have been comfortably ahead, but Thompson and Lee Gregory saw shots hit the post and Gregory was also denied by goalkeeper Alex Cairns when he should have scored.

Millwall fell behind to Ben Davies’ firsthalf injury-time header and despite laying siege to the Fleetwood goal after the break they couldn’t find a breakthrough.

Thompson was left frustrated after his side missed the chance of move four points clear of seventh-placed Southend with two league games left.

“The ball just wouldn’t go in the net, it was like a wall on their goal-line,” he said.

“The keeper made some great saves, we hit the woodwork and it’s just frustrating really. The performance in the first half an hour was the best we’ve played in a very long time.

“It was just one of those days.

“We were confident, every time we got the ball I thought we could score. It died down then a little bit and they got on top but I thought throughout the game we were the better side.

“All the boys played very well. We’re on top form but we just need to get the final ball, that last touch of the ball into the net.

“They got their bit of luck and the ball went in the back of our net. It just wasn’t going to happen for us and we’ve got to go into the next game, play like we did in the first half an hour [Monday] but this time put the ball into the back of the net.”

Millwall stayed in sixth place after MK Dons defeated Southend 2-1 on Monday.

They know if they beat Oxford on Saturday they will go into the final day a win away from the play-offs.

Thompson said: “We got into the changing room and found out Southend had lost so it’s not the end of the world.

Of course we wanted to get the three points that would have put us into a better position.

“We’re in the same position we started [before Monday] so if we can go and get three points on Saturday then all will be good.”

If current league positions are the same after 46 games, then Millwall will face the Cod Army again in a play-off semi-final in May. Millwall beat Fleetwood more comfortably than the 2-1 scoreline suggested in October, and should have been out of sight on Monday before Uwe Rosler’s side went in front.

Thompson believes Millwall would get the better of Fleetwood if they met again this season.

He said: “There’s no reason why we can’t beat them over two legs. We’ve come [to Highbury Stadium] and battered them but it just didn’t happen on the day.

“We’d be confident with anyone we got in the play-offs over two legs. We’d do a good job and are looking forward to seeing what happens.”

MILLWALL’S LAST GAME FORDE WINS PROMOTION COULD BE SELL-OUT WITH POMPEY

BRISTOL ROVERS are set to have their biggest crowd of the season for a potential last-day play-off decider against Millwall.

Rovers will go into the final round of League One fixtures still in with a chance of finishing in the top six if they beat Peterborough this weekend and Millwall and Southend lose.

The club have already sold more than 10,000 tickets for the fixture, which is all-ticket. Millwall have sold their full allocation.

The previous biggest crowd at the Memorial Stadium this season was 11,200 for Rovers’ Boxing Day clash with Coventry City.

DAVID FORDE secured just the second promotion of his long career after Portsmouth’s 3-1 win at Notts County last Monday.

Forde, whose only previous promotion was with Millwall in 2010, helped Pompey to League One after four seasons in the fourth tier.

Paul Cook’s Portsmouth are currently third, an unassailable ten points clear of Luton Town with three games left.

Forde still has a chance to win his first league title in English football, but Portsmouth need to win their last three games and hope Doncaster and Plymouth slip up.

IT SHOULD have been a lot better for Millwall, but it could also have been an awful lot worse.

Millwall might never know how they managed to leave Highbury Stadium with nothing on Monday, but at least they have the certainty that if they win their final two League One games they will finish in the top six.

They also now know that if their season extends beyond April they will play the first leg of their semi-final at home. As it stands that will be against Fleetwood and it will either bring them out in cold sweats thinking about it, or have them salivating.

They had fifteen efforts on goal on Monday – including seven clear scoring chances inside the first 25 minutes when they also forced eight corners – but couldn’t beat goalkeeper Alex Cairns, who left clutching his bottle of champagne after being named man of the match.

Right now popping a bottle of bubbly in celebration seems a long way off for Millwall.

The only consolation after they had battered the Cod Army was their relief in the changing room when they quickly checked their phones and saw Southend, their closest challengers for sixth, had lost at home to MK Dons.

A couple of weeks ago it was Millwall’s bitter rivals Charlton Athletic doing them a favour by taking points off the Shrimpers. On Monday former Lion Ed Upson was at the heart of MK Dons’ win at Roots Hall.

But Millwall will not want to have to rely on favours to reach the play-offs for the second successive season. They might have already used up their season’s share.

They will hope they’ve used up their share of bad luck as well after spending long periods pummelling the Fleetwood goal without reward. The visitors hit the woodwork twice in the opening quarter

and encountered Cairns in inspired form.

He made at least three saves that are probably in his own personal top three this season.

Millwall, though, will realise they only have themselves to blame. When you know you control your season’s fate, there is little point assigning misfortune to the mood of the gods after fluffing so many chances.

And, in fairness, Lions boss Neil Harris didn’t do that afterwards when he said “there is still plenty to work on on the training pitch” ahead of this Saturday’s crucial fixture against Oxford United at The Den. Oxford have little left to play for apart from jigging for final league positions, but then again neither did MK Dons this

week. Oxford could turn up in south London subconsciously in holiday mode, but there is also the danger they will play with freedom and expression.

At least some potentially good news comes in the form of issues around influential midfielder Liam Sercombe, who is currently frozen out because of “disciplinary issues”.

Michael Appleton hasn’t revealed what they are, but also hasn’t said if he will pick Sercombe, who was one of Oxford’s key players when they knocked Millwall out of the Football League Trophy last season.

“Everything is undo-able, there's never a full stop on anything,” the Oxford boss said. “But, there’s going to have to be a hell of a lot of work behind the scenes to

“We do things a certain type of way.

There’s a culture at this club, certain things we accept and certain things we don't.

“I’m speaking on behalf of the whole group, not just myself and I’ll be amazed if anybody thinks differently.”

Another frustration for Millwall on Monday was that Shaun Hutchinson’s injury curse has seemingly struck again.

Centre-back Hutchinson lasted just a half on his fifth successive start – his secondmost number of consecutive starts this season since he joined Millwall from Fulham last summer.

This is the sixth time Hutchinson has suffered an injury setback this season, limiting the number of league starts he

has made to twelve. Arguably Millwall’s best defender, his importance is underlined by the fact that his side have lost just once in all competitions in fifteen games in which he has completed 90 minutes.

Harris said Hutchinson suffered a blow to the ribs, and Millwall are assessing him ahead of this weekend.

His injury meant Jake Cooper played for the first time since March 28 and he was one of several Millwall players left shaking their heads in disbelief as chance after chance came and went.

Lee Gregory was most culpable of all.

goal to aim at, gave Cairns every chance to make the save despite the goalkeeper having to scramble back to his feet.

Soon after, Aiden O’Brien linked up with Jed Wallace on the left. Wallace’s cross was perfect but Gregory nonchalantly rolled a shot towards goal and watched it hit the bottom of the post.

Fleetwood only came into the game after half an hour and then they pinned Millwall back and threatened with corners and crosses into the box.

Uwe Rsoler’s side went ahead in firsthalf added-time after Mahlon Romeo had fouled Amari’i Bell on Millwall’s right.

George Glendon swung over the freekick and Ben Davies got the start on an unusually defensively static Steve Morison to head past Tom King into the

bottom corner.

Millwall almost completely dominated the second period but ended up with nothing from 16 corners and numerous crosses into the box.

The worry is that Gregory has scored just twice from play in 20 games this year and Morison just once in his last fourteen games. Millwall rely to a huge extent on those two to do so much, from winning aerial duels to bringing others into play and getting into the box to apply the finish to moves. If the Lions are to finish in the top six, let alone challenge for promotion, Gregory and Morison need to rediscover their goal touches.

Cairns just wouldn’t be beaten and kept out Cooper’s header before denying substitute Calum Butcher in injury-time.

The goalkeeper admitted he was “speechless” after his performance.

“To be honest, it all goes by as a blur,” said Cairns, 24, whose only other Football League appearance before this season came as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat for Leeds United at home to Blackpool in 2011. “I’m there to do my job which is to keep the ball out of the net it’s as simple as that. I did that and we got the three points.

“I’m speechless really, my head’s pounding a bit now but what a massive three points for the boys. What a win.”

Millwall, meanwhile, will have to get over their disappointment quickly. If they beat Oxford they take Bristol Rovers out of the equation. It’s simple maths with two games to go.

GREGG WYLDE could be recalled early from a loan spell at Northampton as Millwall assess whether he needs groin surgery.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris said having their fate in their own hands with two league games left is “all we can ask for”.

The Lions lost 1-0 at Fleetwood on Monday despite dominating the game, but were relieved that Southend were beaten 2-1 at home

by MK Dons.

Millwall are a point ahead of Southend, who are seventh in the table. Rochdale are two points further back and Bristol Rovers are

also not out of the top-six race, though if Millwall beat Oxford on Saturday then that will end Rovers’ hopes before the clubs meet on the last day of the season.

Millwall know if they win their last two games they will reach the playoffs for the second successive season.

“That’s all we can ask for,” Harris said. “We’ve two games to go and are on the 70-point mark, it’s in our hands.

“Are there going to be twists and turns in the last eight days of the season? I’m sure there will be. All we have to do is make sure we focus on the next game, which is Oxford on Saturday, and make sure that we play with the same quality we did

[Monday] and then we’ve got the ruthless edge in front of goal.

Millwall came away from Highbury Stadium on Monday wondering how they hadn’t got anything from the game.

They created fifteen goal-scoring opportunities, hit the woodwork twice, and Fleetwood goalkeeper Alex Cairns was named man of the match after his heroics.

Harris said: “You don’t want to get beaten in any game but if you are then that’s the way to get beaten, playing like we did with flair and passion and quality. If we can’t score, though, we should be coming away with a 0-0 draw.

“It was almost 2-4-4 at the end.

Our fans were outstanding, they got right behind the team.

“Anyone leaving will be disappointed, of course, and it’s a long journey back, but they would’ve enjoyed watching their team.

“Some of the football was outstanding, the chances we created, we were on the front foot and took the game to Fleetwood away from home. It was like a home performance.

“I’m disappointed for everybody connected with Millwall in the stadium that we didn’t get the point or three that we deserved.

“But it wasn’t to be and we go again Saturday.”

Wylde has started just six league games since moving to Northampton in January and hasn’t featured at all since their 0-0 draw with Oxford on March 25.

Scottish winger Wylde started only one game for Millwall after his summer move from Plymouth, who secured promotion back to League One on Monday.

Lions boss Neil Harris spoke to his Cobblers counterpart Justin Edinburgh after Millwall’s 3-0 win over Northampton last Friday. Wylde wasn’t allowed to play in that game anyway due to the terms of the loan arrangement between the clubs, but he also missed Northampton’s 1-1 draw at home to Shrewsbury on Monday.

Harris will speak further with Edinburgh before deciding whether to recall Wylde, whose Lions future is in doubt after his lack of an impact this season.

Millwall may decide to act now so Wylde is fit to move on in the summer.

Harris said: “Wyldie is injured, he’s struggling with a groin problem. He might have to have minor surgery.

“He hasn’t been fit enough to be involved recently.

“I’ll be speaking to Justin and if he has no chance of being involved in the next week or two then we may have to look at a groin operation now so he has time to recover and be ready for pre-season.”
