A MURDER investigation has been launched following the death of a 25-year-old Walworth man on Thursday, who was found lying “unresponsive” on the pavement.

Police and paramedics were called after Reginald OfeiBerko’s body was found at 3.05pm in Penrose Street. He died later that day in King’s College Hospital.

Young people shine with an increase in top grade GCSEs

S

OUTHWARK’S YOUNG people have yet again shown what they can do, producing better top grade GCSE results than last year.

It would be all too easy to form an opinion on teenagers based on the horror crime stories run in newspapers on an almost daily basis.

Whilst there are undeniable, complex issues that need to be dealt with around knife crime and young people, it should also be looked at in perspective.

And this is why we decided to run a big spread on how well our young people are doing at our schools - this week with our GCSE coverage and last week with the A Level results.

Provisional GCSE results show that 68.4 per cent of Southwark children achieved five or more A*-C grades including English and maths, compared to 64.3 per cent last year.

Results for the English Baccalaureate also saw an improvement of over two per cent.

There were also some incredible stories of individual pupils’ stunning successes. One Walworth Academy pupil, sixteen-year-old Ahmed Robel, is off to Eton College after being offered a scholarship. He received four A*s, four As and two Distinction* grades. A City of London Academy pupil, Shelley Ramirez, got one A*, six As and three Bs, even though she didn’t learn English until she arrived here three years ago from Spain. She told the News that she learnt the language by staying in school and watching TV programmes like Family Guy, with the subtitles on!

Southwark is home to some very bright and ambitious young people.

Good news for rail passengers - but strikes due soon

W

hat a relief for commuters that Southern Rail is to completely reinstate its inner-London services from Monday.

A commute to work is never anyone’s favourite thing anyway, but to face the level of disruption some have had to endure over the last few months must have been beyond frustrating.

People work long hours already, so making the travel to and from work more of an ordeal than it should be is obviously far from desirable.

But the ordeal is not yet over. A 48 hour train guard strike by members of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday next week. The union is at odds with Southern over the firm’s plans to introduce driver-only trains. Will this stand-off continue, and what can be done to bring it to an end?

London Bridge arch to be turned into hidden bunker for French Resistance themed eatery ‘Maman Le Mot’

LISTEN VERY carefully, we shall say this only once... A London Bridge arch turned hidden bunker bistro has been occupied to transport diners to the height of World War Two and the French Resistance.

Maman Le Mot, Bunker and Bistro, will open its doors next Friday to give people the chance to eat and experience France in 1943.

With the exact location kept a secret until tickets are purchased, eaters are encouraged to dress the part and will be taken through how to “parlez Francais”, swig wine and, once full, get involved in “Le Party”.

Hosted by A Place In Time, the unique dining experience is

available every Friday and Saturday from 7pm to 1am from the launch on September 9, and follows on from a similar experience called The Tick Tack Club, which was inspired by the BBC Birmingham gangster drama, Peaky Blinders.

James Battison, founder of A Place In Time, said: “The first spark came from standing in the corner of the main room, whilst it was running as the Tick Tack Club and thinking, this looks a bit like a bunker. One thing lead to another and here’s where we are!”

The experience is said to have been inspired by comedies like ‘Allo ‘Allo and Dad’s Army, and seeks to give people a different restaurant experience.

Walworth man found lying ‘unresponsive’ in street

A MURDER investigation has been launched following the death of a 25-year-old Walworth man on Thursday, who was found lying “unresponsive” on the pavement.

Police and paramedics were called after Reginald Ofei-Berko’s body was found at 3.05pm in Penrose Street. He died later that day in King’s College Hospital.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Jones of the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC) has told the News that Reginald had sustained injuries “consistent with being assaulted”.

DCI Jones said: “It is believed that Reginald has been involved in an altercation with a group of four men: one white male and three black males.”

Police made one arrest of a nineteen-year-old on Monday. The

force was unable to give any further details at the time of going to press.

DCI Jones added: “What we know at the moment is that the victim was in the Walworth Road and East Street Market area at 2.45pm – only a matter of minutes before the altercation took place in Penrose Street.

“We believe he may have been sleeping rough. He had been in accommodation not long ago, but we have been unable establish where he had been staying [in the last few days].

“He frequented the area and has family who live in the area. I think he will have been well known in the area.”

The detective confirmed that Reginald’s nearest relative in Walworth, his grandmother, was “extremely distraught” and

“desperate to understand how this might have happened to him”.

The police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

“This is a busy road, and with the hot weather, there would have been a lot of people out and about,” DCI Jones said.

"We are extremely keen to talk to anyone who either took part in this altercation or who witnessed such an incident.

"I would also like to speak with anyone who saw Reginald after he left the shop.

“Where did he go? What was he doing before 3pm?

"Any piece of information, however small, might be vital to us - so we would urge any members of the public who can help to please come forward and contact us."

A TODDLER who fell from a fifth floor window near Southwark tube station two weeks ago is “still recovering” in hospital.

George Arthur Roberts’s lived at a few different Southwark addresses with his wife Margaret, but they settled in the Lewis Trust Dwellings in Warner Road, Camberwell – where the blue plaque will erected.

The 6’2” hero earned a reputation in the World War One for throwing bombs back over enemy lines. He then saved countless lives in Southwark as a fireman living in Camberwell during the Blitz, earning himself a British Empire Medal and founding the local branch of the British Legion.

George, who died in January 1970, won last year’s annual blue plaque ballot organised by Southwark Heritage Association.

The ceremony will begin at 11:30am at Block C, the Samuel Lewis Trust Building, Warner Road, Camberwell.

In attendance will be the high commissioner for Trinidad and Tobago, MPs Neil Coyle and Helen Hayes, and the chairman and deputy chief officers of the London Fire Brigade.

Your Uber jet to Ibiza will arrive in three minutes

A LONDON Bridge couple were among eight lucky winners of a private jet trip to Ibiza put on by cab app firm Uber - and found out only minutes before the taxi came to whisk them away.

Heather Williams, 33, and Adam Runcorn, 28, were whisked away at short notice as part of the Uber and Absolut vodka’s #AbsolutNights campaign, which seeks to encourage people to open up to new experiences.

Tax Advisor Heather entered the competition along with 23,000 others, and found out she won the trip at home on Friday morning two weeks ago. She decided to accept the invitation to head straight to the airport to a waiting private jet.

Heather said: “I have never won a competition before and only entered when Adam reminded me before he left for work on Friday morning.

When I won I was in complete shock.

“It didn’t feel real and then total panic sunk in when I was told that my Uber would arrive to collect me in three minutes to take me to the private jet!

“We literally had no idea what to expect, the whole trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never forget. The highlight was flying on a

With only three minutes warning before her Uber arrived, she packed a bag of holiday essentials, grabbing only a passport and sunglasses for her boyfriend Adam.

The 24 hour experience was hosted

by TV and radio presenter, Arielle Free, and Absolut’s global ambassador and mixologist Rico Dynan.

In Ibiza the experience included a private yacht ride, a private table at famous beach club Blue Marlin, a stop at the five star hotel OD Talamanca, dinner at KM5 and then on to Glitterbox at the legendary nightclub Space, for its last season before it closes permanently in autumn.

At 5am, guests continued the party into the morning hours and caught the sun rising over Talamanca bay.

A CAMBERWELL church will clear £150 worth of debt for three random people a week this month, as part of a series of seminars aimed at helping people become financially secure.

The House of Praise, in partnership with Financial Peace University, will start the eight week series on Sunday September 4 to help people get out of debt.

Inspired by the fact that British people owe some £1.484tn, Pastor Andrew Adeleke and Dave Ramsey want to help tackle the problem from within the community.

Pastor Andrew said: “I know people are thinking this is some kind of gimmick, but we are very serious about doing our bit to help people to reduce debt and encourage them to be financially independent.

"We believe that owing less money is exactly the same as having more money and is a necessary precondition for building wealth.

“Every week we feed and help the poor. We want to help people learn how to be responsible with their money, build an emergency fund and create a monthly spending plan.

“We’ll have experts from banking

and real estate come talk to show people how to get insurance to protect their health and families.

“We have done it on a smaller scale but this is the first time we are going full blast.”

The seminars will be free to attend and will take place at 254-270 Camberwell Road, as part of normal service times.

Stolen safe found ‘thieves sweaty’ BOROUGH: Police recovered a “very heavy” safe in Mint Street Park this week, after it was stolen from Great Guildford Street overnight.

The large safe was found hidden away in some bushes in the park, where it had been forced open and abandoned.

Officers took to twitter to tell of their find, writing: “Very heavy item. All that effort and it only had paperwork in.

Criminals must have been gutted and very sweaty.”

Borough woman to run race in memory of mum BOROUGH

Half marathon to raise money for cancer charity

A BOROUGH woman whose family has been plagued by cancer is running a half marathon in memory of her mother, who died five days after her eighth birthday.

Fatima Alam, 28, will run the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon next month to try raise £500 for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, to help people ‘build a future beyond cancer’.

Having her father survive throat cancer and her nan pass away from breast cancer, Fatima said she was determined to avoid “my beautiful niece and nephew experiencing the pain of losing their parents to cancer.”

She said: “I lost my mother to breast cancer just five days after my eighth birthday and have always struggled to come to terms with it.

“It was only after a heart felt conversation with my best friend a few years ago that she encouraged me to run a 5k with her, to try and channel my pain and loss to something positive that will help others.

“Raising money for charity has allowed me to express myself and share my feelings with others.”

She added: “I decided I'd like to run again in memory of mum, and to raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. They help suffering patients, and are pioneers in new research. I hope that any money I raise can help all those families currently suffering to turn their lives around.”

More than 16,000 runners will join Fatima at the starting line at Hyde Park to run the route dubbed the ‘most beautiful run in the world’s greatest city’.

Now in its ninth year, the aim of the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon is to raise money for charities big and small, and each year the event grows in popularity, getting bigger and better.

Since 2008, the event has also raised a whopping £25 million for approximately 650 charities.

Campaign for more Boris Bikes

SOUTHWARK: A petition aimed at getting more Boris Bikes in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe has been launched.

Called “Why the Gap”, the petition is part of a campaign that highlights the gap of Boris Bike stations in north Southwark.

Richard Shuttlewood, who started the campaign, said: “We frequently see Boris Bikes in the area – I assume cycling from Tower Bridge to Greenwich along the Thames Path. “Because this journey will take more than 30 minutes with no docking stations along the way, riders will have to pay an excess charge, and of course will be dissuaded from taking a break or refreshment along the way.”

Boris Bikes, also known as Santander Cycles, were introduced by former London Mayor Boris Johnson in 2010 and can be used from £2.

Paul Cowperthwaite, General Manager of Santander Cycles, said: “At present, the main focus of the cycle hire scheme is to identify more sites within the area currently covered by the scheme.

“However, we are always happy to discuss further expansion, and actively engage with boroughs and private landowners to try and bring the benefits of the scheme to as many people as possible.”

Frustrated commuters to see return on Monday

SOUTHERN RAILWAY will completely reinstate its innerLondon services from Monday, spelling an end to weeks of severely reduced services throughout Southwark.

The rail operator made the announcement on Monday, also promising to reinstate one-third of all its services that were put on emergency timetables from July 11.

However a 48-hour strike by train guards who are members of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday next week. A second ballot by train drivers of the Aslef union calling for more strike action was also called off on Monday.

Strikes by members of the RMT trade union also took place between August 8 and 10. Rail commuters in Dulwich, Nunhead and Peckham endured months of unpredictable services. The confrontation between Southern and the RMT has been over Govia Thameslink (GTR), who own Southern, and their plans to introduce driver-only trains.

There had been widespread reports that commuters who were consistently late to work even being forced to move house or change job.

Charles Horton, GTR’s chief executive, said: “We're pleased we can restore a large chunk of our train timetable for our passengers on this date but we will not be satisfied until the full timetable is running, and running in a punctual way people can rely on..”

Emergency time tables will remain in place for many areas of the south east of England.

Consultation on 2018 timetable to start THE NEWS has learnt that Govia Thameslink (GTR) will begin a consultation on its proposed time tables for 2018, from next week.

The news was disclosed by GTR’s chief executive Charles Horton on August 16, during a meeting with London Assembly members on the authority’s Transport Committee, and deputy mayor for transport Val Shawcross.

Assembly member for Southwark and Lambeth, Florence Eshalomi, called it “sheer madness” that the firm was planning to ask the public to comment on its plans for 2018.

Southern has faced widespread calls for its contract to run InnerLondon services to be stripped, and instead given to Transport for London. Florence told the News: “[Charles Horton] started off

apologising for their incompetence.

He did go out of his way to admit responsibility. He turned up with loads of press officers. They knew we were going to go for them.

“Everyone was just so shocked. I read out some of the feedback I have read from residents – some of them have had to change jobs.

Others people are paying in excess of £4,000 on travel cards, but they are simply not receiving a service.

“I said: ‘how do you expect anyone to have confidence in them to organise the next 18 months when we have got temporary timetables now?’

“We need to put more pressure on the government and TfL to say this isn’t working.”

GTR said they did not want to comment on their consultation plans.

Night Tube coming to Jubilee Line in October

THE MAYOR of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced the Night Tube will come to the Jubilee line on October 7.

The introduction of the 24-hour service at the weekends follows the

successful launch of the scheme earlier this month on the Central and Victoria lines.

Night Tube’s impact on London’s economy is already being seen with footfall in Oxford Street and the West End up by fourteen per cent and sixteen per cent respectively last weekend.

BGT orchestra to perform at Coronet

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists, The Collaborative Orchestra, will perform at The Coronet Theatre on October 22.

‘CS Spray’ arrest

ROTHERHITHE: A man who was arrested last weekend on suspicion of possessing a knife and CS Spray, has been bailed to late October.

The man, 44, was arrested on Saturday morning following reports of a man having an “unknown substance thrown on his face”.

Officers were called at 11:36am to Lower Road with the London Ambulance Service also in attendance.

A police spokesperson said he was arrested for “what is believed to be CS Spray”.

SURREY QUAY’S BHS store was among the last to close its doors last weekend, with sales seeing everything including mannequins being flogged at discount prices.

The Range, a home, garden and leisure retail chain, is rumoured to be in talks with British Land to replace the store, but the News was told no information was yet available.

BHS’s closure marks the end of 88 years of BHS on high streets across the UK, and meant the loss of around 11,000 jobs nationwide.

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary, said: “Wherever the blame lies for the demise of this once great British retailer, it certainly is not with the staff who are paying a high price for corporate decisions that have led us to where we are today.”

BHS fell into administration earlier this year after its £571m pension deficit started to take its toll on the business.

Administrators Duff and Phelps announced that they had failed to find a potential buyer for the struggling retail chain in July, sealing its fate.

BHS was sold by retail magnate Sir

Philip Green last year for £1 with £1.3bn of debt, after buying it for £200m in 2000.

He is now said to be looking to pay £300m to help plug the pension gap.

Prince to reign at Peckham flick fest

SOUTHWARK: The Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival returns today for a run of screenings, kicking off with Purple Rain, the musical-drama starring pop icon Prince.

Now in its seventh year, the festival will see book shops, pubs, parks and libraries host 29 screenings of cult classics and blockbusters, across ten days.

Starting at 8pm at the Montague Arms, 1983’s Purple Rain will open the festival, with capacity available for up to 60 guests, with no pre-bookings available.

Also on the opening night, Rye Books will host an outdoor screening of A London Trilogy and Storm Brewing will be played at the Victorian Chapel in Nunhead Cemetery.

Three screenings will take place at a different venue each night, with Saturday 10 seeing four screenings overall on the penultimate night.

Other noteworthy picks include The Jungle Book on September 10 at 7.30pm in Burgess Park at the Chumleigh Street entrance.

BBC’s proms swaps Alber t Hall for Peckham multi-storey

On Sunday September 11, from midday to 6pm, the traditional free Summer Fete will return to host the finale of the Bermondsey Folk Festival.

Taking place on the former Lewisham and Southwark College campus, where Drummond Road meets Clements Road, the fair will include a Ferris Wheel, a petting farm and swing boats, with all proceeds priced 50p or £1 for Bede House Association.

On Saturday September 17 from 3pm to 5:30pm, the Grosvenor Film Festival weekend will kick off, showing old archive footage and docu-films from Southwark Local History Library dating from 1931 to 1988.

Local resident, Gary Magold, selected the films and will introduce these in Building F at the Biscuit Factory, a former warehouse for when the factory was operational.

Access from Clements Road with free entry and refreshments, the event is open for people to come and go.

Three London-themed ticketed screenings will take place over the rest of the weekend; My Beautiful Launderette on Saturday evening, and Paddington then Alfie on Sunday.

PECKHAM’S MULTI-storey car park will play host to its first classical music performance with the BBC Proms, this Saturday.

Pieces composed by Steve Reich will be recreated by Hannah Grayson and the Multi-Storey Orchestra at 12pm and 3pm.

The second concert, featuring the same performances, will be broadcast live on

BBC Radio 3.

Kate Warnock of Bold Tendencies, which has promoted events at the venue for ten years, told the News: “The first piece of Reich’s music they play will be a solo performances by Hannah of First Vermont Counter Piece. The second they will play is called Eight Lines, and features thirteen players, and the third piece, Music for A Large Ensemble, will have a 30-piece orchestra.”

PUPILS CELEBRATED as they received their GCSE results last week, with initial results indicating a four per cent increase in numbers achieving five or more A*-C grades including English and Maths.

Provisional results show that 68.4 per cent of Southwark children achieved 5+ A*-C including English and maths, compared to 64.3 per cent in 2015 for all schools – an improvement of four per cent.

Results for the English Baccalaureate also saw an improvement of 2.5 percentage points on the previous year from 32 per cent to 34.5 per cent.

The percentage of all students gaining A*-C grades remained strong in Southwark at 73.6 per cent of pupils, the same as in 2015, in contrast to a fall

of 2.1 per cent nationally.

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children and schools, said last week: “Hot on the heels of some amazing A-Level results, Southwark is today celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results. Initial results show that Southwark students have gone for gold once again this year, with 68.4 per cent of pupils achieving five A* to C grades including English and Maths.

“Good exam results are a stepping stone to great things, whether that’s further education, apprenticeships or employment, so well done to everyone celebrating this week who can also look forward to a bright future. The council is determined that all our young people have every opportunity to succeed in life, which is why we are planning for the future and investing in our schools, like the new Charter School in East Dulwich.”

Bacons: ‘Pupils are a credit to the college’ A "SIGNIFICANT number" of Bacon's College students have achieved “excellent” GCSE results this year, with many students boasting a "clean sweep" of A and A* grades, but overall results were lower.

Principal Chris Mallaband said: “Whilst we are disappointed that the College’s results were lower than last year we are delighted to see the outstanding grades achieved by many students – they are a credit to their families, the college and to themselves.”

Two Spanish speaking students received notable results. JuanFelipe Velasco achieved seven GCSEs at C+

including an A grade in Maths and Juan Montes achieving four A grades and a further four C+ GCSEs. Many students are said to be returning to Bacon’s for Sixth Form while others will be progressing to colleges and into apprenticeships.

One of Bacon’s top performing students won a £500 bet with her dad over her results, and has ambitions to become an entrepreneur.

Ashley Anigboro (pictured left), sixteen, did poorly in her mock exams at the beginning of the year, which led to her dad betting her she couldn’t achieve four As. But on results day she blew his expectations out of the

water by receiving eight A*s and two As. “I didn’t expect my results to be like that. I thought I was going to get at least five As. I’m going to do A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Spanish. My teacher said you had to be a native Spanish speaker to get an A* but I did it,” Ashley said.

“My dad was worried at first as my mocks went really badly. He made a bet with me for £500 if I got 4As. He was so shocked! He got me here before school opened because he wanted to know,” she added.

With her online shopping basket on Amazon already stuffed with clothes, Ashley says she has set her sights on studying at the London School of Economics before becoming an entrepreneur.

COLA‘s ‘fantastic set of results’ - including girl who learnt English by watching Family Guy A RECORD 76 per cent of GCSE students at Bermondsey’s City Of London Academy Southwark achieved five A*-C grades, including English and Mathematics, which is an eight percentage point increase on last year.

The academy also boasted a ten per cent increase in pupils achieving the English Baccalaureate measure, and almost twenty per cent of pupils achieving eight A*-A grades.

The academy’s results buck the national trend which has seen a decline in overall results.

Principal Richard Bannister said: “I am delighted to say that our students have achieved a fantastic set of results. This is testimony to the hard work of our pupils and dedication of our staff. It is great to see social mobility in action.”

Catherine McGuinness, Chairman of the Education Board at The City of London Corporation, said: “We are very proud of how hard our students have worked, and we are delighted that this hard work has translated into tangible results which will enable them to pursue the further education opportunities and careers of their choice.

HARRIS BOYS’ Academy East Dulwich has recorded its “best results ever”, with 69 per cent of students achieving A*-C grades in English and Maths.

More than a third of the boys also bagged the challenging English Baccalaureate, up from 29 per cent last year.

Chris Everitt, Principal of the Academy, said: “Our students and parents are rightly celebrating this year’s results, which are higher than they have ever been before.

Harris Bermondsey sees increase in A*-C grades SIXTY THREE per cent of Harris Academy Bermondsey’s students achieved A*-C grades in English and Maths, up from last year’s fifty nine per cent.

The academy said 40 per cent of the year group bagged the demanding English Baccalaureate, outperforming the national average of 23 per cent and building on last year’s result of 27 per cent.

Nine girls gained all A* and A grades in GCSE subjects, with Danqing Hang (pictured) awarded 9 A* grades.

The Charter School: ‘Pupils flourish here’ PUPILS AT The Charter School in Dulwich were jumping for joy last week as three quarters of pupils gained five A*-C grades.

Among the school’s achievements were its claim of beating the national average of A*C grades by 32 per cent, while 28 per cent of Charter pupils also got five A*-A grades.

Forty-three per cent of students gained the English Baccalaureate, and sixty-four per cent earned at least one A* or A grade.

Headteacher Christian Hicks said: “Pupils flourish here regardless of their circumstances. We are delighted with these outstanding GCSE results – which put us among the top performing state schools in the UK. “Our year eleven pupils now have strong foundations for success and happiness in their future lives.”

Notre Dame’s ‘amazing results’ THE HEAD TEACHER of Notre Dame Secondary School in Elephant and Castle has told the News she was delighted with an “amazing” set of GCSE results.

Among the highlights for the Roman Catholic Girls’ school were a 100 per cent pass rate for all students who sat exams in Physics.

There were also pass rates of 95 per cent in Chemistry, 97 per cent in Spanish, 92 per cent in Portuguese and 90 per cent in Geography.

Fifty year eleven students also took one or more subjects at AS level, with pass rates of 91 per cent in Philosophy and Ethics, 97 per cent in Spanish, 100 per cent in French, 83 per cent in Portuguese, and 75 per cent in Additional Maths.

Sister Anne Marie, the school’s head teacher said: "We are delighted with our GCSE and AS results this year. Our provisional result for

Progress 8 [a new measure of progress in pupils’ scores in eight key subjects] is 1.28, which is an outstanding score.

“We hope to be able to confirm this in November when the Department for Education are due to release their data.”

JAGs: 15 pupils earn straight A*s JAMES ALLEN’S Girls' School (JAGS) in Dulwich has announced an improvement on last year’s GCSE results, with fifteen pupils earning straight A* grades.

The school reported that 50 per cent of the private school’s year elevens achieved eight or more A* grades, while 90 per cent of its pupils’ grades were an A. One pupil even bagged herself twelve A* grades, and nine girls had eleven A*s.

JAGS headmistress, Sally-Anne Huang, said: “I am really thrilled that this great group of girls has achieved so highly.

“The GCSE programme at JAGS requires them to take a broad range of subjects and to develop a

wide range of skills.”

Katie (pictured) opened her envelope on Thursday to find nine A* grades, and from September she will study A-levels in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Art. “It’s been absolutely great at JAGS," Katie said. "All the teachers are so willing to help you and take time to go over things if you don’t understand. I really pushed myself to do as well as I could and I’ve realised I can actually achieve A*.”

One celebrating student, Holly, came away with eleven A* grades and an A. “The teachers appreciate the need for balance and understand each other’s priorities - it’s not only about their own subjects,” she said.

Globe: ‘I got great results because of amazing teachers’ GOODNESS JAPHET-MATHIAS, a pupil at Ark Globe Academy in Elephant and Castle, appeared almost stunned as she opened her envelope to find six A*s and five As.

“I feel proud,” she said. “I’m happy I finally finished and I’m excited to start my A-levels.

All I have done this summer is revise. I’m doing Maths and I heard it’s really hard so I’m getting started now.

“I’m on to the next stage of my life and I want to do even better.”

Her classmate Carlin Peton, who commutes from Crystal Palace, got four A*s and seven As. “I’m so happy and feeling so grateful,” Carlin said. “I have high standards for myself and I’m excited to have met and exceeded them.

“I am going to study Maths, Music and Physics, but I’m going to do them at another college where I can focus on music. My main instrument is a drum kit but I also play bass and piano.

“I was very focused all year. My head was down and I had to sacrifice some sleep and free time. Sometimes people would be going out but I would be staying in, staying focused on my goal.”

Carlin’s marks were matched by Chike Nwaenie, who said: “I want to be an entrepreneur or a trader so I’m going on to study mathematics and economics. I got such great results because of amazing teachers who could always be depended on to go that extra mile for us.”

Records broken at St Thomas the Apostle

RECORDS WERE broken at St Thomas the Apostle College in Nunhead, as 82 per cent of its pupils achieved five grades from A* to C.

The school’s executive head said the headline figure was a “phenomenal” improvement on last year’s rate of 68 per cent.

Ninety-one per cent of all results in English were also an A* to C, and 88 per cent of pupils passed a C grade in Maths.

Executive head teacher, Mr D Cefai, said: “What an outstanding achievement in such a short time.

“These results continue to represent a new era at St Thomas the Apostle with results

Jamele Mcintosh, who earned five A*s, six As and one B grade, told the News: “I’m not going to lie, I forgot it was results day this morning. I just woke up and didn’t think about it. But I guessed I had done well, because I saw online that the school had got a high percentage for English and Maths. I’m happy now – it all feels worth it.

“In A-levels I’m going to study Maths, Further Maths, psychology and economics.”

WALWORTH ACADEMY pupils have spoken of their "disbelief" after receiving top GCSE results, while one student was preparing to enrol at Eton College.

Sixteen-year-old Ahmed Robel made the news in March when his school announced that Eton College had offered him a scholarship. Ahmed told the News: "I got four A*s, four As and two Distinction* grades. I am really pleased. I wasn’t really expecting them to be honest but I put in a lot of hard work, so I’m really happy that I got them.

"I really want to thank all my teachers: Miss Toworfe, Ms Di Giorgio, Myint, Karim, Episcipo, Fazackerley and Mr Fiberesima. My family have always been a big inspiration. My sister taught me to try and do anything I want to."

The school's principal, Yvonne Powell, said: "The great thing this year is so many children who were borderline and managed to get over the A-C barrier. We have managed to improve so many pupils' life chances and that's the biggest

achievement for me. We have also had the highest number of pupils this year who have met the criteria to carry on with their A-levels here. So we will have the biggest year twelve and year thirteen cohort we have ever had in September; not just for the sake of it, but because so many of our CGSE students have made it there."

Harris Peckham principal’s pride

HARRIS ACADEMYPeckham’s principal has spoken of her pride in the school’s GCSE results, and its rise from being one of the “worst schools in the country”.

Students of the school celebrated its best round results yet, with 53 per cent of students achieving A*-C grades in both English and Maths – eight per cent better than in 2015.

Just over one-fifth of students earned the English Baccalaureate equalling a “good” pass in all of their core academic subjects.

Carol-Anne Alcock, Principal of the Academy, said: “This year’s results reflect the aspirations of our students and their families, and the talent and

dedication of our staff.

“We will continue to improve, but the academy has come a long way from its beginnings, when it was one of the worst schools in the country.”

St Michael’s: ‘Brilliant results follow success of A Levels’

BERMONDSEY’S ST Michael’s Catholic College beat the national GCSE result average, with 84 per cent of students achieving A*-C grades in English.

Against the backdrop of the “rigorous” Progress Eight, introduced by the government to indicate the progress made by students in secondary school across eight key subjects, students also achieved 82 per

cent of A*-C in Maths and 28 per cent getting A*-A grades.

The school revealed that 52 per cent of students also bagged the English Baccalaureate and 86 per cent of students got either an A* or A grade in Further Science.

Product Design saw 46 per cent of students at A and A*, Law and Media Studies both with 43 per cent of students getting A and A*, Computer

science with 41 per cent of students awarded A and A* and French with 40 per cent at A and A*.

A school spokesperson said: “These brilliant results follow the huge success of St Michael’s Sixth form students in their A and AS exams and are a credit to the hard work of the students and staff at the college and the support of parents.”

Seventy-eight per cent of pupils achieved at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English and Maths, while 45.3 per cent of pupils achieved the English Baccalaureate – an improvement on 2015.

A few of the highest-achieving pupils included Maureen Nwabueze (eight A* two A), Estelle Darko (eight A* two A) and Azenosa Osazee (six A* three A).

Serge Cefai, head teacher of Sacred Heart School, said: “For Sacred Heart School to once again perform so strongly at GCSE level is a testament to the hard

work of our staff and pupils.”

Students’ hard work was noticeable through the departmental results. In Biology (100 per cent A*-C), Physics

(100 per cent A*-C) Arts and Design (100 per cent A*- C) Chemistry (98 per cent A*-C) and Graphics (94 per cent A*-C). 91 per cent of all pupils achieved at least two A*-C grades in Science.

Mr Cefai said: “Our provisional result for Progress 8 [a new measure of progress in pupils’ scores in eight key subjects] is 1.09, which is an absolutely fantastic score. We hope to be able to confirm this in November when the Department for Education are due to release their data.”

Also among the best performances were: Andrea Cruz Borges (four A* and six A), Estelle Uba (four A* six A), Abrehet Semra (four A* five A), Jennifer Ogbebor (four A* five A) and Oghomwen Obasuyi (three A* seven A).

YEAR ELEVEN pupils at Alleyn’s broke a new school record for GCSE results last week, with 67 per cent of all recorded grades at A*.

The private school in Townley Road, Dulwich, also had 99 per cent of all its grades at A* to B, while 63 per cent of the school’s 143 pupils achieved all A* or As. The seventeenth-century school’s headmaster, Dr Gary Savage, said: “This is a truly stunning set of results, our best ever, and an enormous tribute to the hard work of the pupils, the support of their teachers, and the excellence of the holistic education offered to boys and girls here at Alleyn’s.

“Most significantly, for every boy and girl there is a platform for future study and enjoyment of the learning they have happily begun at the school.”

The night tube will be a big boost for Southwark

D

URING THE early hours of 20 August I was delighted to attend the launch of the first night tube with the Mayor of London.

As a lifelong South Londoner, I was really excited to board the first train and it was great to see so many people out that evening as the train left the platform at 12.36am.

The night tube is long overdue. As a busy major city we need to make the most of all that London has to offer – the night tube will help us to make the best of London, day and night.

The introduction of the Northern and Jubilee lines later this autumn will help thousands of Southwark residents and will be a welcomed boost to our local night time economy.

The night tube will help to support local businesses - the Southbank is already popular with local residents and tourists from across the world. Many visitors will now have the opportunity to enjoy a night out without frantically checking that they’re not about to miss the last train.

Other areas across Southwark including East Dulwich, Peckham and Camberwell, which may not have direct tube access, will also benefit by providing an additional route for passengers.

The night tube will provide a safe and efficient means of travel home for many of our vital workers who work long night shift hours including many cleaners, police officers, paramedics and others.

Undoubtedly with any new transport project, there may be some concerns about the day-to-day operation and teething problems.

I have raised some questions directly with the Mayor about the need for Transport for London to work with local councils and businesses along the new night tube route to ensure that there is access to enough public toilet facilities.

This may seem like a minor detail in the operation of the tube, but for local residents and businesses close to tube exits, it is a major point.

It is important for Transport for London to work with local residents, businesses and others who may be impacted by the introduction of the night tube to ensure that any concerns around additional noise, safety or anti-social behaviour from additional passengers at night will be addressed.

This is something that I will be keeping a close eye on before the launch of the additional lines.

SOUTHWARK UNISON will be hosting a drop in session for home care workers, those who receive care and their friends and families.

The drop in sessions are being held at The Star Express Café Blue Anchor Market Square on 1st and 2nd September 10am-2pm.

When Southwark Council passed a three year budget for 2016-18 it included £9.5million cuts to the Adult Social Care budget together with £3million to be raised from new charges.

Southwark Council was the joint first council to implement UNISON’s Ethical Care Charter. This means they are working towards all Home Care workers receiving the London Living Wage, fixed hour contracts and paid travel time. We know many Home Care agencies are breaking the law by not paying the national minimum wage because travel time is not taken into account. We know agencies are breaking the law by arranging appointments back to back without any time for travel in between, forcing Home Care workers to either “clip” the beginning and end of appointments or work in their own time without pay.

Southwark UNISON will report back our findings on the 16th November when UNISON activists and communities will come together to raise awareness of the devastating impact of cuts to older people’s social

care services. Age Concern have calculated £1.95bn has been cut from social care budgets in the last ten years at a time when demand and risen.

REGARDING YOUR article ‘Your Pub Needs You!Southwark News August 25th 2016.

I’d like to thank local MP Neil Coyle for raising the important issue of protecting our pubs, Southwark Council knows how much our pubs mean to people and the contribution they make to the historic character, economy and vibrancy of our borough, which is why we do all we can to protect them with our planning powers.

We were the first council to make a local pub, the Ivy House, an asset of community value, something we have now done for several historic pubs in the borough including The Glad, Elephant and Castle and Thomas A’Beckett. We also brought in the conservation area around The Glad to help protect this historic part of the borough, including The Glad itself.

We are already looking at how we can use Article 4 in the way Wandsworth Council have to place an extra layer of protection for our local pubs, as we did with railway arches earlier this year, and we will make an announcement soon. Southwark is committed to creating new homes for people but, as we have already shown, this won’t be at the expense of our most loved drinking establishments.

A better service for hospital patients

Gravesham NHS Trust will mean fewer hospital appointments for local people in Southwark because our staff will be sent to Kent.

In fact, the opposite is true – under the Vanguard patients from Kent who currently travel up to London for not only surgery but also pre-operative appointments and rehabilitation afterwards will be able to have many of those appointments closer to home.

That is not only better for patients from Kent but also better for local people living in Southwark and Lambeth.

Enabling more patients from outside our local boroughs to have follow-up appointments nearer home will instead free up resources at our hospitals for local people.

We will ensure there is no negative impact on local patients resulting from our partnerships with hospitals elsewhere.

Here at Guy's and St Thomas' we are proud to provide exceptional care to local people living in Southwark and Lambeth in both our hospitals and in our community health centres - and that's not going to change.

Hitting the disabled for blue badges

CREDIT TO Southwark Council for launching the 'Free Swim and Gym' scheme which opens up free keep fit facilities to all residents each Friday and weekend afternoons.

Let's hope that the Olympics feel good factor will rub off on young and old alike.

However, I cannot let Southwark Council completely off the hook.

Would they explain why disabled residents applying for a Blue Badge are now forced to pay a £10 'administration fee'? A large number of Blue Badge holders are unable to work and receiving Disability benefits. This is an additional cost that should be met through responsible budgeting of existing funds by

Southwark Council. We should assist all our residents where possible.

Dockland Settlement is offering free pitches THERE HAVE been letters published recently regarding the Dockland Settlements I want to respond to.

In response to a letter from Sandra Walsh (28/07/16) our Community Centre’s new astro-turf pitch replaced our old astro-turf pitch and has nothing to do with the concrete play area that Hollybrook Homes wants to build on. When the negotiations took place with Southwark for our new community centre and pitch, Hollybrook Homes’ plans to build on the site of the concrete pitch and red crane did not exist so I am puzzled as to why people are making links between the two.

It is true that the Southwark Council led Odessa Youth Club has moved from a small unloved building next to the concrete play area to our community centre but this means the local young people now have better facilities. We also provide the Youth Club with free use of Dockland Settlements astro-turf pitch three evenings a week. Regarding the £50/hour weekend charge for private groups on our astro-turf pitch - as a charity we need to be sustainable and hiring out our facilities (which is not uncommon for charities to do) is a way to ensure we can remain open and continue providing activities for local people that are free such as the three free kids sessions, the free adult disability football session and the free over 50’s sports session that all take place on the pitch every week.

Regarding Mrs Heather’s letter (25/08/16) we hire the astro-turf pitch at a very low rate between 4pm and 6pm to a local football academy who set their own prices. It is not a Dockland Settlements led activity and we have no input in the prices set for the professional football coaching her Grandchildren receive.

The Koestler Trust, the UK’s bestknown prison arts charity, tries, in its own way, to do the job that the prison system fails to do due to it being under-funded and not wanting to be seen ‘pampering’ inmates with education and outlets for their creativity.

Koestler Trust’s annual exhibition of arts created by prisoners and offenders on community sentences is back again and this year its theme is We Are Human, and for is curated by internationally acclaimed writer, dub poet and musician Benjamin Zephaniah, who has selected a diverse range of artworks from nearly 7,000 pieces submitted to the 2016 Koestler Awards from across the UK. The works on display in the exhibition include painting, music,

Open16: How Gestures Make Space As part of the Great Peckham SketchIn, this workshop explores drawing as a temporal and participatory act,

writing and ceramics as well as traditional prison crafts such as matchstick modelling. The curator has selected works that explore themes of time and the natural environment, with a particular focus on creative writing and poetry within this year’s display. We Are All Human provides a unique and thought provoking insight into the lives and minds of prisoners, secure patients and detainees across the UK. To present the exhibition to the public, ex-prisoners have been specially recruited, trained and employed by the Koestler Trust as exhibition hosts. They will work alongside Southbank Centre staff to invigilate the exhibition and welcome visitors throughout the exhibition run.

As well as gaining unique work experience and new skills, the exprisoner hosts will deepen visitors’ engagement with the exhibition, enabling everyone to hear first-hand how the arts reflect and enrich the lives of people in

culminating in a drawing/walk using resistance bands. Participants will work together to test how movement and gestures create new space. A documentation of the performance will be presented in the exhibition Reflecting Peckham at Copeland Gallery. Workshop led by Draw Peckham, Rossella Emanuele with Michael Ditchburn and Nate Frazer.

Benjamin Zephaniah said: “I was in prison myself in the 1970s and back then there was no way you could express yourself. I felt like a creative being but there was nothing there to do. I express myself through words, and here I am surrounded by people who express themselves in different ways – matchsticks, papier mâché and painting.

“Every bit of artwork in the exhibition has meaning, everything is relevant to the person who’s created it. We are all human, it’s a really simple truth, even if people are going through difficult times we are all trying to survive. We are all here because of circumstance.

“In my younger years everyone told me I would spend my life in prison, but there was a little spark inside of me that thought – ‘No, I’m a poet.’ I want the artists to know that their work is valuable, in terms of expression and adding to the whole conversation about life. The same for people who visit the show – it's good art!”

Secret Chamber music

AS PART of Totally Thames season of 150 events this September, composer Iain Chambers returns to fill the atmospheric subterranean Victorian space in the Bascule Chamber at Tower Bridge with a brand new programme.

The Bascule Chamber Concert will showcase five specially-commissioned works for voice, which will each explore the acoustic potential of this venue.

The Bascule Chamber houses Tower Bridge's huge counterweights during lifting, and is London's greatest hidden space for an intimate vocal concert. When the bridge is at rest, this huge brick-lined space stands empty: a dramatic subterranean Victorian space. For the first time ever, the performance will also spill out into the Accumulator Chamber – a vast, highceilinged space housing the bridge’s original, now disused operating mechanism.

The chamber's unique acoustic will be showcased by five brand new works, performed by the award-winning Juice Vocal Ensemble and vocal music composer Ben See Group. The concert will feature both classic and contemporary music alongside new compositions by Iain Chambers, Ben See, Catherine Carter and

A Fabaret The official after show party for drag action musical Heels of Glory, the headliner at this year’s London Pride Festival. The Greater Game East London football club Leyton Orient, then known as Clapton Orient, was the first team to sign up its players, staff and supporters to fight in the Great War. 41 men volunteered in all. Three of them never returned. Based on the book ‘They Took The Lead’ by Stephen Jenkins, this new play of love, friendship and loss tells both sides of the story from the flag waving patriotism to the conscientious objectors. [Title of Show] With three weeks to go before the 2004 New York’s Musical Theatre Festival submission deadline, and knee-deep in balled-up show ideas, the struggling writer-composers decided to write a musical about two struggling writer-composers trying to write a musical with the help of their two best friends. In short it’s a musical about two guys writing a musical with countless musical theatre references.

It’s a show that feels like a rummage through the dressing-up box of Broadway history and is an inventive, fresh musical that chronicles its own creation, the lives of these four characters as they strive to make their show a success. Tipsy tea for two food & drink

THE CALL came through asking if I wanted to review Little Nan’s Afternoon Tea, and remembering Saturdays at my Nan’s where all the cousins and aunts would congregate I thought it would be nice to take a trip back down Memory Lane.

And what a trip it was! writes Michael Holland...

Little Nan’s is just like your Nan’s.

Yes there are bone china cups and saucers and decorative teapots, antimacassars, knitted cushion covers and lace tablecloths over tables that the Victorians once made polite conversation over. And, which is a great touch, there are aunts and cousins and mums running about with trays between the tables, as this is a family business in the truest sense of the phrase.

Now multiply that image by a thousand, add a splattering of Julian Clary campness, décor by Ab Fab’s Patsy at her drunkest, and lighting

by Alan Carr and you still won’t be close to what you find in the

basement of a pub in Peckham where the domino playing clientele upstairs all seem to be called Blerd Clart. And don’t ask for tea… In the teapots are the craziest cocktails ever, with names such as: Duke of Bermondsey, Nightmare on Deptford Broadway, Lord Dirty Den, and 40 more with similar titles that pay homage to local and Eastenders’ legends.

Having a hint of what to expect I invited The Boy Burkett, a Connoisseur of Kitsch who I knew would enjoy the quirkiness and fun of this afternoon tea with a difference, and as soon as we walked down the steps and entered the space beneath the public bar he exclaimed, ‘This is just like my house!’ After finding a table for two we were warmly welcomed and handed cocktail menus.

Little Nan’s Bar is the work of Deptford Boy Tristan Scutt who, when his nan died at a grand old age, wanted to celebrate her life by utilising her possessions and keeping her memory alive by allowing people to enjoy themselves while surrounded by Nan stuff. We were already enjoying our surroundings, loving the memory of our nans, and tapping our feet to the ‘70s disco music that made you want to dance, dance, dance and shout out, ‘Yowzah, yowzah, yowzah’.

Our first cocktail was the Duke of Bermondsey - Earl Grey Gin, Bermondsey Tonic syrup, fresh lime and soda – in the boldest teapot I’ve ever set eyes on. We had to pick our cups from a selection that hung

on the wall, and pour ourselves our first of the afternoon. And very nice it was too.

Soon after a cake stand of sweets and savouries were brought, and we tucked into a nice selection of finger sandwiches (Crusts cut off), with one being a Jam Sandwich made with Little Mum’s Jam. The cakes - Telegraph Hill Tiffin, Nunhead Orange, Queen Victoria Sponge, Scones and Almond Cake - are all made by Cousins Jacquie and Louise who run the Hill Station Café in Telegraph Hill, using Nan's recipes, ‘which only me, my Mum, Louise and Jacquie know,’ Tristan revealed.

And they were all quite different from others of the same ilk that I have had before.

The scones, usually a weighty cake, were so light they had to be tethered to the table in case they floated away!

In the evenings customers can bring food down from the Caribbean restaurant in the pub which, you will know from the aroma, is an extremely good one.

Next up for us was an I Love Boney M - chilled vodka, licor 43, fresh orange juice, raspberry puree, Prosecco – A tart little number with a kick, that certainly complemented the music and ambience of Little Nan’s, which was now full of young, trendsetting people sipping alcohol daintily from cups, which is a sight you don’t often see.

I had a look round at the leopard skin wall paper and pictures of Pat Butcher, Lady Diana, Boney M and, er, Paddy Ashdown, then shook my

head in awe at the greatness of it all.

Tristan came and sat with us to tell how he first began in Deptford before getting moved on to creating pop-ups around London and then landing in Peckham last year with his Tropical Den where we now sat; plus in Dalston with Little Nan's Rio Bar. He was pleased to tell us he will be opening up again back on his manor with a permanent venue located under two carriage ramp arches next to Deptford Station.

Cousin Jacqui fetched Tristan a teacup that he began sipping from but it did just have tea in it! Mr Burkett found this most odd and told him so: ‘Tea in a cup! Where do you think you are?’

Along with Jacqui, Tristan’s Mum helps host the Afternoon Teas, plus

lots of friends, which makes for a better working environment, and he told us that along with his Nan’s heirlooms he picks up a lot of the vintage treasures from his favourite place – Deptford Market.

Tristan went off to concoct one more cocktail for us: Council Princess - Malibu, white rum, vodka, grenadine, orange juice, pineapple juice, cranberry juice – which was just enough to send us off out into the afternoon sun a little tipsy with big smiles on our faces after a very agreeable and very distinctive afternoon.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

The purpose of the Order is to facilitate a play street in the roads listed, in the schedule to this notice.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit any vehicle from:-

Davies ton sends Surrey to Lord’s final

It is the second time in two seasons that the Kennington side have made the final of the 50 over competition, although they will hope to go one better than last year when they lost to Gloucestershire to end runnersup.

Earlier in the four day game Sam Curran starred with bat and ball for Surrey. In Lancashire’s first innings total of 287 he took for wickets for 61 runs.

The all rounder then top scored in Surrey’s first innings total of 480 when he notched up 96 runs before being caught and bowled by Arron Lilley.

A SEVEN wicket defeat at the hands of Esher on Saturday has ended Dulwich Cricket Club’s hope of promotion from Division Two of the Travelbag Surrey Championship.

The Pink and Blues were in action on both Saturday and Monday but came away with one point from the six available as their season continues to get off to a slow start.

With a dozen games gone in their campaign in the Ryman Premier Division Hamlet have won two contests, lost two and drawn their remaining couple of games.

On Monday Dulwich appeared to heading for their second defeat in three days after they fell behind against Hendon, when Spencer McCall netted after nine minutes.

But Tomlin was on hand just past the hour mark to score the leveller that ensured Hamlet had something to show for their weekend efforts.

That goal from Tomlin was his second in two games as the striker was also on target when Canvey Island came to visit Champion Hill last Saturday.

But his goal only cancelled out Canvey’s opener, scored by Harrison Chatting, and seven minutes from time Ryan O’Rawe netted the winner for the Essex side enabling them to pick up all

three points.

After the weekend action Hamlet find themselves in eleventh place in the table, ten points behind early pacesetters Leiston.

This weekend Dulwich start their FA Cup campaign when they travel to Sussex to take on Pagham FC. The Southern Combination Premier Football League side, who are based in Bognor Regis, operate at two levels below Hamlet on the non league ladder.

They reached the First Qualifying round of the competition by defeating Canterbury City 2-1 in a contest that went to a replay.

A ROLLER coaster weekend of action saw Fisher FC blow a three goal lead at home before falling to defeat away at Beckenham Town on Monday.

IT WAS a winless weekend for Stansfeld sides that operate in the Southern Counties East Football League (SCEFL) and the Kent County League.

Following their takeover of Eltham Palace during the close season last season’s Stansfeld first team now play in Division One of the SCEFL, although they are still called Eltham Palace for the time being.

They were in action last Friday against Sporting Club Thamesmead and they fell to a 2-0 defeat thanks to goals from Dan Parish and Josh Patrick.

The Stansfeld side, last year’s reserves, who now play in Kent County League Premier Division were not in action on Saturday after their game against Kennington was postponed.

When they did return to action on Monday they fell to a 3-0 defeat with Jordan Downes, Sean O’Sullivan and Craig Martin netting for old rivals Metrogas.

The Stansfeld side in the SCEFL were also in action on Monday but they also lost 3-0, that team losing out to Snodland Town.

Lionesses back to winning ways

MILLWALL LIONESSES picked up their first win in five months on Sunday when they overcame Watford Ladies 2-1 away from home.

On Saturday Fisher looked set to taste victory for the first time at their new home of St Paul’s Sports Ground.

That was because at half time against Corinthian they found themselves three goals up thanks to efforts from Trey Williams, Scott Wason and Tyrell McMeod-Bentley.

But in the second period they fell away and the visitors managed to bag a point thanks to a trio of goals from Mike Hagan, Conor Johnson and a final minute equaliser from Josh James.

Fisher boss Gary Abbott told the club website: “I’ve got to say in the first half the boys worked so hard to stop them playing and we justly got our rewards.

“At half-time I just said go out and do exactly the same, but to work that hard for 90 minutes, no one can do that. We kept the intensity up for the first 25 minutes, but then they scored their first goal.”

Just two days later the Rotherhithe club made the short trip to Beckenham Town but they came away with no points.

Frankie Warren and Jamie Humphris got the goals that means the Fish are still seeking their first league win of the campaign after four games, although the Beckenham defeat was their their first loss of the season.

This season has been a tough campaign for the Lionesses, including a change of manager mid season, so last weekends game was a contest between the sides at the bottom of Women’s Super League Division Two. The Lionesses took an early lead, after just two minutes, when Ashlee Hincks was on hand to put Millwall ahead.

But the home side levelled on 53 minutes when Anne-Laure Davy headed home only for Milwall’s Lucy Loomes to score the decisive goal minutes later.

The Lionesses winning goal getter said: “It’s a massive win for us. We came here to get three points and we got them.

“We knew it was a massive game and we responded to the challenge and got the result that we really needed and wanted.”

Millwall winger had little time off in the summer and is currently with Northern Ireland in Austria

SHANE FERGUSON had little time to recharge his batteries in the summer and shortly after Millwall’s 3-1 win over Chesterfield on Saturday he was jetting away again, this time to Austria.

Such is the relentless nature of modern football focus has already switched to the World Cup in Russia, and Austria is where Michael O’Neill is taking his Northern Ireland players to prepare for this Saturday’s qualifier in the Czech Republic.

Despite less than two weeks off following his country’s run to the second round of Euro 2016, Ferguson has started this season as if he’d spent a restless period of summer inaction twitching with anticipation to get back.

It was his impetus after his introduction that forced Sheffield United deeper two weeks ago and his cross that led to the handball and penalty that Steve Morison converted.

Last Saturday, at Chesterfield, he scored the first before Morison took over to grab the headlines.

STEVE MORISON turned 33 on Monday but there are no signs his turn of pace, finishing ability or capacity to dominate a game are diminishing.

Morison was in imperious form at Chesterfield last Saturday, scoring his fourth and fifth goals of the season in his seventh game as Millwall all but wrapped up the points before the break at Proact Stadium.

flying high he was eager to get going this week.

“It’s disappointing missing a couple of Millwall games because you always want to be involved,” Ferguson said.

“But it’ll be good to meet up with the lads again. I’m looking forward to the new campaign.

“We’ve got such a close squad and there are usually the same faces there.

I’m always grateful for getting the opportunity and they are always moments I never forget.”

At club and international level Ferguson’s versatility has been crucial.

He started Northern Ireland’s first game of the Euros at left-back but it is on the left wing where he has made most of his impact for Millwall.

He began in the position last weekend before moving into defence when Joe Martin went off injured. But he had played there for just six minutes when he was required to move forward again after Martin’s replacement, Fred Onyedinma, broke down.

Ferguson admits it’s not easy switching between positions during games, but he says the presence of the experienced Tony Craig and Byron Webster is important.

“It is tough because you’re so focused on going forward, but once there is an injury you just have to do the best for the team, it’s not about the player. I have TC

and Webbie beside me as well which makes it a lot easier.

“Tony’s got a lot of experience and he knows where the best position is to be in, he helps me out a lot because it’s not my natural position.

“We knew there were going to be times when we had to sit in and soak up the pressure and we did that and then took our chances when we got them.”

This time last season Millwall were nineteenth in the League One table with four points from five games. It took until after the turn of the year to reach the top six but they are there now with the ten points from five games they took in August.

They had a blip at Peterborough, but there was no talk of that in the build-up to last Saturday as they made it two wins in two league games to regain momentum.

Ferguson explained: “The gaffer was saying to us after the game that he hadn’t wanted to mention (the Peterborough loss) to us, this was our first away game since then. But he said our attitude towards the game, and the way we have reacted since that result, has been fantastic and he was really proud of the team.

“We always strive to get better and better. Last year was disappointing the way things started, but this year has gone really well and hopefully we can keep it going.”

ability and clever movement off the ball and, with concern over Lee Gregory’s fitness, it is crucial the Lions vice-captain keeps firing and keeps fit.

Harris was pleased with the result against Danny Wilson’s side, Millwall’s first league game away from home since the 5-1 defeat at Peterborough.

“It’s always a difficult place to come, Danny always has good sides and wellorganised teams with experience,” Harris said.

“So we knew we’d have to compete.

It was important for us because it comes off the back of our last away game when we conceded five against Peterborough.

“We didn’t mention that in the buildup, I wanted to see if subconsciously my players had a reaction and I think they answered that in the first 45 minutes.

“Last season we had an excellent away record and we’re looking to continue that this season. It’s the first away win in the league for us and I’ll be expecting many more.”

The circumstances were also ideal for Harris to give new signing Calum Butcher his debut after his switch from Burton Albion last week, and the 25year-old midfielder showed flashes of what he is about, making some late runs forward from midfield and displaying the pace and strength his

new boss hopes will add a different dimension – and goals – to his side.

And while Millwall’s clinical attacking display caught the eye, Harris was pleased with how his defence dealt with the threat of striker Chad Evans despite conceding when Sam Hird nodded in Joe Nolan’s free-kick.

Harris said: “Ched is a super player and you can see a real hunger and determination in him. He’s one of the best centre-forwards in this division so I think the defenders were excellent today against him.”

FOR A long time on Tuesday night it looked like a young West Brom team would force Millwall to duke it out in a penalty shootout, or worse, leave them pointless.

In the first half Millwall toiled against opponents who showed no fear. The ages of the West Brom side that started were: 21, 16, 18, 19, 18, 17, 18, 18, 19, 16, 17.

Numbers were the story of the night.

There were only 2,054 fans at The Den – 81 hardcore Baggies in the away end – so you could hear Lions boss Neil Harris, his voice at top pitch, screaming his dissatisfaction at this side.

Eventually it fell to the oldest player on the field to calm his boss, and it was probably the last player Millwall fans would have wanted to see oneon-one with a goalkeeper and the opportunity to save his team from embarrassment.

Jimmy Abdou, 32, hadn’t scored for almost a year – and his Millwall career total before Tuesday was eight goals in 324 appearances – but he finished in the 63rd minute with the assurance of someone who regularly finds himself in those kinds of positions inside the box.

it two from the spot after Thompson had tumbled under Brad Sweeney’s challenge.

It was a tough decision for West Brom’s youngsters to take but Harris praised them afterwards for making it so difficult for his side.

Harris also said he still thinks the competition is worthwhile, and West Brom boss James Shan insisted it was a “fantastic” opportunity for his players, but that enthusiasm wasn’t reflected in attendances across the country. There were 461 at AFC Wimbledon at home to Swansea and 392 who turned up to see Fleetwood beat Blackburn.

Not surprising, as there was little enthusiasm to detect in the build-up to the opening round of a competition that has attracted a fair amount of criticism and suspicion that it’s a step to eventually establishing a second-tier Premier League.

That wasn’t the only thing that prompted ridicule. When you considered there was a bonus point available to the winners of the subsequent penalty shootout in the event of a draw, it did seem as if a prize had been on offer to the person who came up with the most bonkers set of rules.

Given also the fixture took place on a day when Aston Villa paid £15million for a Championship striker, the promise of £10,000 for a group-stage win and £5,000 for a draw seemed only like a reminder of the yawning gap developing between the second and third tiers in English football, let alone the chasm to the Premier League.

Not that it was a totally useless exercise and the performances of Noah Chesmain and Kris Twardek heartened the home support.

Chesmain, a tough-tackling left-back with attacking flair was first to threaten for Millwall in the fifteenth minute when he cut inside two defenders before unleashing a shot with his supposedly weaker right foot that left Shaun Donnellan flat on his back and needing a few moments on the touchline to regain his senses.

The average age of West Brom’s team was just under eighteen but that told nothing of their physicality. Kane Wilson is sixteen years old but has already made his first-team debut and was on the bench for the Baggies’ 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough last weekend. He was also involved in their best move of the first half when he advanced forward

before drifting infield to find Donnellan, whose cross to the far post was headed over by James Smith.

The most pressure either goalkeeper come under in the first half was when Jack Rose – the oldest player in Shan’s side at 21 – punched away Gregg Wylde’s dangerous corner to the near post.

Later in the half Chesmain responded to the home fans exhortations to shoot, but he couldn’t keep his 30-yard effort down.

Whether it was the thoughts of a penalty shootout or more likely the realisation they ought to have been imposing themselves much better on such a young side, Millwall came out in the second half and started to more urgently find routes into attacking spaces.

Mahlon Romeo’s cross from the right was missed by Twardek in the 53rd minute before Shaun Williams fired a low shot wide.

And when the game needed someone to conjure something special to make the breakthrough, Abdou’s deft touch after good build-up play involving Romeo and Jamie Philpot took him around the last defender and he finished calmly past

Rose for his first goal in 33 games.

Harris made that triple substitution in the 65th minute and Morison twice could have doubled the lead when a lob found the top of the net before he chested down Wylde’s cross to the back post but shot wide.

By now the energy had left West Brom’s youngsters but it was a harsh decision from referee Brendan Malone that gave Morison the chance to make it two. Thompson showed no indication he wanted a penalty, but Morison showed no mercy from the spot.

Andre Wright had a late chance to make it an awkward last few minutes for the home side but Tom King was positioned well to make the save.

MILLWALL and Bradford met four times last season. There was one win each and two draws at the end of which the Lions reached the League One play-off final.

While much at Millwall has remained the same, with just three first-team additions to the squad, there have been changes at all levels at the Bantams.

Within a few weeks of the end of last season they had new owners and Phil Parkinson had departed for Bolton to be replaced by club legend Stuart McCall.

Bradford have made a strong start to the season and are unbeaten since that play-off semi-final defeat to Millwall in May. They are second in the table after three wins and two draws this season.

This week, ahead of this weekends’s clash between the sides at The Den, the News checked in with Telegraph and Argus’Bradford reporter Simon Parker to get the lowdown on McCall’s newlook side…

We know it’s been all change at Bradford, but has the style of football also changed from the uncompromising approach last season?

It’s a similar sort of thing to Neil Harris. He was here twice as a player and then got the job as manager the first time in 2007.

Striker Smith on the mark again

HARRY SMITH got his second goal in two games for Millwall’s U23s but it wasn’t enough to stop the young Lions falling to a 3-2 defeat to Watford.

Justin Skinner’s Millwall side twice took the lead, first through Kyron Mundle-Smith before former Folkestone striker Smith put them 2-1 up.

But Alex Jakubiak, Connor Stevens and Sean Murray scored to give Watford’s youngsters – who are managed by former Leeds and Liverpool winger Harry Kewell – their third successive win.

The defeat was Millwall’s third in a row in Professional Development League South.

McCall brought him in as a midfield general but he’s had to play him centrehalf.

So he’s played centre-half out of necessity but he’s been fantastic. He’s not the biggest but he reads the game so well.

Jordy Hiwula, a striker who is on loan from Huddersfield, is talented but he can blow hot and cold.

What formation is McCall likely to play?

He’s changed it around a bit but it’ll probably be a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. In the last away game at MK Dons he played a 4-5-1 so he could do that.

There have been a lot of injuries but there are a few coming back slowly.

They’ve had to shuffle things around a bit. But it’s not the 4-4-2 it was under Parkinson, it’s a lot more fluid now.

There could be only two players who started against Millwall last season in the side this Saturday - James Meredith and Billy Clarke.

Where can Millwall look to exploit Bradford?

Their Achilles heel has been the lack of height in the team. There has been no Rory McArdle. Nathan Clarke, the centre-half, is injured as well.

And Hanson’s been injured. They got done from a set-piece against Oldham and Millwall are a big team as well. So they hope to have Hanson back.

How many Bantam fans are travelling to London for the fixture?

Quartet in international action

THERE WILL be four Millwall players on international duty this weekend.

Shane Ferguson is part of the Northern Ireland squad in the Czech Republic for their World Cup qualifying clash.

David Forde, whose form on loan at Portsmouth has earned him an international recall, is in Serbia with the Republic of Ireland as they begin their campaign to qualify for Russia 2018.

Lions midfielder Jimmy Abdou is with Comoro Islands for their fixture in Uganda in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

And Kris Twardek is part of the Canada U20 squad for their double-header against Costa Rica.

Archer talks were distraction

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris said he wasn’t aware of any enquiries from clubs for Jordan Archer while the goalkeeper was mulling over signing a new contract with the club.

Harris said a number of weeks ago the club had made Archer “an extremely good offer” but there were concerns over his future as the former Tottenham player left the contract unsigned.

NOAH CHESMAIN was “exceptional” in Millwall’s 2-0 win over West Brom’s U23s on Tuesday night, his manager Neil Harris said.

Chesmain, an eighteen-year attacking left-back, made his full Millwall debut against the Baggies after one appearance as a substitute against Bury in League One last season.

He was first to threaten for the Lions

when he skipped past two tackles to slam an effort towards goal that briefly seemed to knock out young Baggies midfielder Shaun Donnellan.

Chesmain earned roars of approval from the home fans with a couple of challenges that sent opposition players spinning, and he is expected to make a first-team impact this season.

Harris also praised Canadian underage international Kris Twardek, who also made his full debut for the club.

But any fears that Archer was seeking a move elsewhere were allayed before Tuesday night’s 2-0 win over West Brom in the EFL Trophy when it was announced that he had committed himself to the club for a further three years until the summer of 2019.

Archer signed a two-year deal when he joined from Spurs last summer, but Millwall moved to offer him improve terms after a season in which he claimed the

number one jersey from David Forde and helped the Lions to Wembley.

Harris was pleased to secure Archer’s long-term future, but admitted the situation had been a distraction.

“He’s a top young goalkeeper,” Harris said. “I don’t think he’s played his best football these last few weeks.

“I thought he was better last Saturday, actually, but I don’t think he played his best football while contract negotiations have been going on.

“But he’s tied down now and he’s fully focused on getting back down to business on the football pitch.”
