How willing are we to help total strangers?

HE HEART-BREAKING story of a single mum with kidney failure whose two young children are becoming her carers raises some difficult questions for the rest of us about what we are prepared to do to help a stranger.

If a loved one was in desperate need of a kidney to stay alive most of us would jump on the operating table, but what about for someone you’ve never met before?

Just down the road from where Razlyn Bromfield is struggling through three days of dialysis every week lives a remarkable woman, who has donated her Kidney and her eggs in the past and tried to donate part of her lung to total strangers.

Sue Gianstefani, of East Dulwich, is a walking endorsement of living, altruistic organ donation – to donate organs to strangers while you are still alive, just because you can help to transform someone’s life for the better.

“It’s a really fantastic way of helping people. It completely changes other people’s lives for minimal risk to your own life,” Sue told the News shortly after bagging a gold medal in this year’s British Transplant Games.

“Everybody’s overwhelmed with the world’s problems and we think there’s nothing we can do about it. This is one way we can actually do something positive.”

For Razlyn, a transplant is her only hope of getting off the dialysis machine and making sure her children can enjoy what is left of their childhood. But the sad truth is she may have a long wait, as organs from Black Minority Ethnic donors are hard to come by.

In the meantime, is it just down to Razlyn and the council to make sure her kids get to school every day and that they are fed at night? Perhaps we should all look to our neighbours a little more to see what we could do to help each other.

At the very least, if you haven’t registered for organ donation in the event of your death – that is something you could do today, which could save someone’s life.

A practical joke that went way too far!

ELL DONE Surrey Docks Farm for stepping in and saving ‘David’-the-piglet after it was used for a practical joke gone wrong in Downing Street.

The eight-week-old potbelly pig was left outside the Prime Minister’s residence by YouTube jokers Trollstation, after a book recently alleged that Britain’s leader had put a “private part of his anatomy” into a dead pig’s mouth as part of a university initiation stunt.

Plenty of us were tickled pink by the original story, but dragging a terrified animal around for a stunt is not funny - it’s clear to see from the video that the pig is distressed and Surrey Docks Farm described it as “traumatised” when they took it into their care.

Thankfully the farm has now found a new home for David-the-piglet but was it necessary to scare a defenceless animal half to death for a joke?

A TRAUMATISED piglet which was rescued by Surrey Docks Farm after pranksters left it outside 10 Downing Street has been offered a new home.

As reported first on our website, the eight-week-old potbelly pig was left outside the Prime Minister’s residence by YouTube jokers Trollstation as “a delivery for David Cameron.”

Officers took the terrified piglet to Charing Cross police station, where they gave it a pear, some water and hi-vis jackets to snuggle up in, before calling the farm to ask for help.

The prank took place just days after it was alleged that Britain’s leader had put a “private part of his anatomy” into a dead pig’s mouth as part of a university initiation stunt.

In the video, two fake delivery men are shown arriving at the gates of 10 Downing Street and approaching the security team.

“We’ve got a delivery for David Cameron,” said one of the men. “It’s from the Bullingdon Club. They said if he can’t keep a secret, he’s no longer in the club.”

They then take the clearly distressed and squealing pig out of its cage, telling it “come on, you’re going to your daddy.”

The video has been watched over 275,000 times since it was posted online last week but has been

criticised by farm staff as animal cruelty.

After taking in the pig last week, Claire Elson, livestock manager at Surrey Docks Farm, told the News: “They’ve not thought about how this is going to affect the poor little piglet. This is its first experience of the outside world and it has been dragged over Downing Street and into Charing Cross police station.

“Piglets are normally so friendly and curious, but it is so stressed after its first real contact with people.”

But thankfully there was yet another twist in the tail.

After the farm appealed to News readers for help, an anonymous person came forward and offered to take in and care for the pig permanently – something the farm was unable to do due to its status as a working farm and the animal’s unknown background.

A delighted Claire said: “The person who has come forward has experience and will be able to offer a good home. The pig will be staying with us for just a bit longer, as we’ve had to keep him in quarantine for 21 days due to the risk of infection.

“However he is doing great now.

It’s still a bit wary, but it’s getting used to people. It has even starting to waggle its tail when it sees me.”

BEN PURDY’S girlfriend heard his desperate final moments on the phone as he was cornered by her jealous ex-lover and shot in the head, the Old Bailey heard last week.

Ashley Adedeji-Adebisi was on the phone with 18-year-old Ben Purdy as he was chased by her ex-boyfriend and some of his family, the court heard.

She heard the former Globe Academy pupil panic when he hit a dead end, knowing that Miss Adedeji-Adebisi’s jilted ex Michael Bagnall, 22, and his family were closing in.

The line then went dead as Ben dropped the phone and the next thing she knew a friend was calling her to break the news of her boyfriend’s death, she told the court.

Miss Adedeji-Adebisi, giving evidence, said Ben had claimed he was going to sports shop Decathlon in Surrey Quays to do some shopping when she spoke to him on the phone in the afternoon of November 23 last year.

However, after chatting for nearly fifteen minutes, he asked her what car Michael Bagnall’s grandfather drove.

“I said ‘A Blue Honda’, why?” she told the jury.

She then realised Ben had gone to the Silwood Estate with his friends Callum Malone and Jack Walker to confront Bagnall, who had allegedly been sending Miss Adedeji-Adebisi threatening texts.

Bagnall had threatened to kidnap her young daughter and Ben’s younger

brothers, it is alleged, and had also threatened to stab Ben. She said: “He said ‘I think I can see Mikey [Bagnall] at the door’ - then he said all the family had come out.”

“As far as I know they started chasing him because Ben put his phone in his pocket but didn't hang up.

“Someone shouted ‘Come on then you pussy’ – that’s all I could hear, then Jack was telling him to run the opposite way.

“He picked up the phone and said ‘We don’t know where to run’ as they were running through Southwark Park.

“He hadn’t said who had come out of the house but someone had got into a car, then Ben was shouting he was in a dead end.

“He was shouting ‘I don’t know where to go’ and I asked him what did the area look like because I know the area - he just said there were fences and walls and that they were chasing him.

“Apparently someone fired a shot and it missed them, then he said that Jack had left him, he asked me what he should do and I said ‘run’.

“Then the phone cut off, I didn’t hear anything else, just a car skid.”

Miss Adedeji-Adebisi, who had lived with the Bagnall family at their home in Alpine Road, Rotherhithe, for six months between January and July 2014, said she knew they had a gun in the shed.

She described an incident where Michael’s younger sister Lee-Ann, 19, complained a man had been rude to her on the street and her family had set out to beat him up.

A BERMONDSEY greatgrandfather braved “roars of laughter” last week when he shaved his head for charity.

Roger Conetta, who was “very proud” of his now-shorn locks, went under the razor at Sam’s Barber in the Old Kent Road last Friday.

The 69-year-old said: “It went very well – but I’m now wearing six hats! When I first got home there were roars of laughter, everyone thought it was

hilarious. I’ve never been bald so they’d never seen it before, everyone was coming up and rubbing my head.”

Roger, an ex-gardener and part-time singer, raised £320.10 with his follicle fundraiser, which included a special party at his home in Harman Close in Avondale Square Estate.

He said: “There weren’t a huge amount of people there but everyone who came gave very generously, I can’t thank them enough. It went great and everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

The fundraiser was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support – a charity that has been

Bagnall recruited his uncle, Andrew Bayne, 37, his cousin Reece Bayne, 19, and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named, to track down Ben after he had confronted him about the threatening texts.

When they did, Andrew Bayne allegedly shot Ben in the head and threatened to gun down one of his friends.

Windows and railings damaged in estate smash

A CAR ended up tipped on its side against a block of flats after an eyecatching accident in Waterloo last week.

No-one was injured in Friday’s incident, which saw windows in a Quentin House

home smashed and pavement railings damaged.

The fire brigade were called when fuel began leaking out of the white Toyota Prius, following the collision at around 11.45am.

The scene was made safe and a police spokesperson reported that it was a “damage-only” collision with no injuries.

Police were called at around 8.50am on Friday after the bike collided with the woman outside the Mercure Hotel.

The rider was taken to a south London

hospital, while the pedestrian was taken to an east London hospital.

Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Man caught after he ejaculated on a female passenger

A MAN who ejaculated onto a woman on a train has been jailed for three years and nine months, writes Amelia Burr...

On July 8, Peter Fabivi boarded a train at Elephant and Castle, undid his trousers and started to masturbate directly in front of a 20-year-old woman.

The victim feared for her safety as there was no one else in the empty carriage, but as he ejaculated on her she pushed passed him and ran to the next carriage.

She was helped by another passenger and reported the offence to a member of staff before Fabivi, 32, got off the train at Tulse Hill, where he boarded a bus outside the station.

Officer were able to identify Fabivi from

CCTV footage and later arrested him at his home in Exmouth Road, Walthamstow.

Fabiyi pleaded guilty to the sexual assault on August

19 at Blackfriars Crown Court and was sentenced to 45 months in prison on Wednesday last week.

He was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order which prohibits him from approaching women sitting alone on trains for a minimum of five years.

Detective Constable Jennifer Brown, who led the investigation, said: “This was a hugely shocking and frightening incident for this woman, and I commend her for having the awareness and courage to report the offence and support the prosecution. I would encourage anyone else in a similar position to do the same.”

A ‘PROLIFIC’ pickpocket who targeted women on buses in Southwark has been jailed for four years.

Glenford Bernard Noel, of Ivy Road, Brockley, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on September 15 after being found guilty of five theft offences and fraud by false representation committed between November 2014 and January 2015.

He stole mobile phones, tablets and purses from the bags of his victims, who were passengers on buses in the borough, as well as in Lewisham and Lambeth.

Noel, 45, was arrested on suspicion of theft in February this year but bailed until April. During this time he was linked with another theft and was found to be using a stolen Freedom Pass.

Steve Burton, TfL’s Director of Enforcement and On-Street Operations, said: “Thanks to the great work of the Roads and Transport Policing Command, this prolific thief has been caught and jailed.

“Crime on the bus network is at its lowest ever level for the ninth consecutive year, but we are not complacent and will continue to work hard with our policing partners to rid our network of these crimes.”

Noel was found not guilty of three further counts of theft.

Council takes no legal action over ‘44 missing social housing units’ BERMONDSEY

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL will not be taking enforcement action after 40 missing social housing units promised for a Bermondsey development never materialised.

In 2010 Notting Hill Housing’s planning application for the Bermondsey Spa development in Grange Walk pledged 44 homes at social rents (council rent levels) out of a total of 205 new flats.

But when council officers came to sign the binding legal agreement in 2011, the wording had switched to ‘Affordable Housing Units’, which means rents can be set at up to 80 percent of market levels.

In March this year Notting Hill Housing confirmed to Liberal Democrat councillor for Grange ward, Ben Johnson there were no social rented properties on site.

After the News reported the ‘missing homes’ to the council in May, Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, told us he was “looking into the rent levels proposed at Bermondsey Spa” and that “appropriate action” would be taken.

In a document providing an update on the Aylesbury Estate compulsory purchase orders, the council revealed last week that it “has taken legal advice and will not be taking enforcement action” in relation to the 44 units.

Instead Cllr Williams is calling for the 44 social rented homes to be built elsewhere in the borough. “We confirmed to the Planning Inspector last week that we will not be taking enforcement action against Notting Hill Housing Group in relation to the Section 106 agreement for the Bermondsey Spa site C5 development,” said Cllr Williams. “We have received advice that a legal challenge

would not be successful, we are instead calling on Notting Hill to replace the 44 missing social rent homes that were not provided at social rent on this site, elsewhere in the borough. We expect them to do just that,” he added.

A spokesperson for Notting Hill Housing Trust confirmed “There are no plans to change rents at The Exchange (also known as Bermondsey Spa). This honours the obligations on rent levels set out in the [legal] agreement. However, we are in dialogue with Southwark Council about providing more social rent homes in the borough.”

Cllr Johnson described the situation as “an absolute shambles.” “When a planning committee votes for socially rented homes, that is what the developer should deliver.

“How on earth are the council going to provide the thousands of new council homes that we need if they can’t get 44 at The Exchange?”

THE MUM and dad of a Millwall-mad six-year-old in desperate need of a life-changing drug said they were “surprised and emotional” when they reached their 10,000 signature target on their petition.

The News has been backing Harvey Brown’s campaign to get the medication he needs to be offered on the NHS since May. Now mum Vikki and dad Dean say they have been “overwhelmed” by the help they have received.

With the help of Harvey’s beloved Millwall and local MP Neil Coyle, the little soccer star has gained support from up and down the country – even West Ham fans have joined in.

With 10,000 signatures on the petition, the family will now get a government response to their campaign.

Earlier this month Vikki, 46, and Dean, 45, of Galleywall Road, said they thought the public pressure was doing the trick as health authorities announced they were leaning towards approving the drug to treat the ultrarare disease, Morquio, which could lead to little Harvey dying in his twenties.

After their online petition got 10,000 signatures last week, Vikki told the News: “We were all really surprised and emotional when we reached 10,000.

THE NEW library at Camberwell Green will finally open its doors in November, the council has revealed.

A community orchard on the site was cleared in 2013 in order for construction to begin, but due to some “contractual issues” the library was not finished on schedule.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark’s cabinet member for business, employment and culture, has now confirmed that the new facility will open to the public on November 4 at 10am.

The current Camberwell Library on

Camberwell Church Street will remain open until Saturday October 31, and in the interim two days library users are encouraged to use services at nearby Peckham Library.

Camberwell Green is also set for a £13million makeover with a new play area, more trees and wildflowers and a new market square planned over the next six months.

The Green will therefore be closed from October 5 until the spring next year.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark’s cabinet member for parks and leisure, said: “Now that spades are in the ground, we’ll be seeing a park respectful of Camberwell’s heritage, a Green that is greener, and one that everyone can enjoy.”

A NEW outlet selling traditional pie and mash made by the same family for more than a hundred years has closed down after being open for a month.

The first Arments’ franchise in Green Dragon Court, beside Borough Market, was doing a roaring trade but shut its doors on Sunday after the licensee was served notice.

Cheryl and Roy Arment said

“teething problems” at the new branch meant it was not hitting the high standards of the shop they run in Westmoreland Road.

As it was not their business, but a franchise, they were unable to take control, so they decided to serve notice on the licensee on Wednesday for breach of contract. The managers decided to resign from their positions and close the outlet on Sunday.

The Westmoreland Road shop is closed for a week’s holiday but will be

only being accessibly via an alleyway next to a laundrette.

The building’s planning permission may explain why the anonymous buyer was happy to pay such a shedload of money. Permission has already been granted for the site to be converted into a two-bedroom home with a garden area.

‘MY CHILDREN ARE TURNING INTO MY CARERS’

A SINGLE mum with kidney failure has been told to prepare her two kids for the worst as they slowly turn from her children into her carers.

For the last two years, Razlyn Bromfield, 35, has had to be hooked up to a dialysis machine three days a week, leaving her exhausted and nauseous the rest of the time.

But the pain and discomfort of her illness is nothing compared to seeing her children grow up too quickly - ten-yearold, Ronaldo, and eight-year-old Asia take a great responsibility on their little shoulders as they often keep watch at night to make sure their mum doesn’t die in her sleep.

They have to miss school when their mum is too sick to look after herself and when Razlyn is unable to make dinner they have another takeaway by themselves.

“They don’t deserve it, it’s not their fault. There’s a lot of pressure on them and it breaks my heart,” Razlyn said as she wiped away a tear in her Norcroft Gardens home in Dulwich.

“I’d love to do things with my kids and run around with them, but they don’t have that option. They just sit in the bed with me lying there.”

The only hope of Razlyn and her children escaping this fate is if she gets a kidney transplant, but while she waits for a donor match she must be hooked up to a machine three days a week to drain her body of the 3.5 litres of fluids it is unable to expel through urination.

“Sometimes I can feel it drowning me,” Razlyn said of the build-up of liquid she feels in her body before dialysis. “If I could get a live donor that would just be the best thing – I need to get a donor to get off the machine.”

In the meantime she must watch the other patients receiving treatment around her “drop like flies” – one day she is talking to them, the next there is an empty

Local campaign for more black people to donate

A DULWICH man whose life was saved by a kidney transplant at Guy ’s Hospital is campaigning for more people from black and minorit y ethnic (BME) backgrounds to sign up as living organ donors.

Organs from the same ethnic group are more likely to be a suitable match for transplantation, so patients like Razlyn need more black people to become living kidney donors. Many people are registered organ donors so that when they die their organs can be used to help someone in need. But there is a growing need for donors to give one of their kidneys while they are still alive to help people like Tayo Idowu, 58, from Dulwich, (pictured) who was on dialysis every day when his kidneys failed before his transplant in 2014.

“The kidney transplant was truly life changing for me,” said Tayo. “After my kidneys failed I faced a very bleak future, but the transplant has given me back my health. I’m hugely grateful and I know I’m really lucky.”

A serious shortage of organ donors from BME communities means it can take far longer for suitable organs to be found for patients like Razlyn and sometimes those delays mean patients die from organ failure before a transplant can take place.

That’s why after his operation Tayo and his sister Dela set up the ‘Gift Of Living Donation’ organisation, which raises awareness of organ donation in BME communities.

“It’s fantastic that the transplant was such a success for Tayo and that his family have gone on to launch this campaign,” said Nikolaos Karydis, the transplant surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust who performed Tayo’s operation.

“Three people die each day in the UK while waiting for a transplant. For those from ethnic minorities the situation can be even worse because there aren’t enough people from similar backgrounds on the organ donor register.”

“I just hope I’m going to be around long enough to see [the children] grow up. At the moment I don’t know how long I’ve got,” said Razlyn.

While she languishes on the transplant donor list, Razlyn told the News she desperately needed some help for them all to live a better life.

Social Services already provide some assistance to Razlyn with her personal care and domestic chores, but she is more worried about the children getting to school, eating properly and enjoying what is left of their childhoods.

“I can’t live like this. It’s a difficult situation. The only thing that’s keeping

me going is my children but they need to be kids, they are too grown up for their age. They need someone to mother them when I’m not well.”

Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark’s cabinet member for children and schools, said social services would look at Razlyn’s case again. “We are very sorry to hear about Ms Bromfield’s situation and the challenges she is facing. We will do all we can to help her and her family, and work with them to find the best way forward,” she said.

POLICE ARE hunting two robbery suspects who pistol whipped a man when he refused to hand over his Rolex.

A CCTV image has been released of two men the police want to speak to in connection with the robbery, after they were caught on camera using stolen credit cards in Peckham.

climbed through an open window into a house in Shooters Hill Road, Greenwich at around 10.15, unbeknown to the two occupants.

The robbers burst into the living room and demanded cash from the 33-year-old victim, who then opened his safe and handed over a

£3,000 watch. When he refused to hand over his Rolex watch from his wrist, the suspects pistol whipped him, tied him up and took his watch.

The victim’s girlfriend was also tied up. The suspects then searched the flat and left with the watches, mobile phones, a tablet and credit cards.

After the suspects left the flat, the victim managed to get free and call police.

He required hospital treatment for a minor head injury. His girlfriend was unharmed.

Both suspects are described as men aged 25 to 30-years-old wearing dark clothing and balaclava’s.

More money pledged for Peckham Coal Line

MONEY HAS kept pouring in to fund a new urban park in the sky to run a long a disused railway line in Peckham.

After the Mayor of London pledged £10,000 to the Peckham Coal Line project earlier this month, the transport charity, Sustrans have now pledged £7,000 to the cause, taking the crowdfunding campaign over the half way mark.

Hundreds of backers have now pledged a total of £37,000 towards the £65,000 target, with 30 days left to raise the rest.

The Peckham Coal Line, inspired by the New York High Line, would start off over seven metres in the air at the Ricketts sidings by Peckham Rye station, a track which currently runs parallel to the ‘live’ line, and the 900m promenade would then gradually slope down to ground level to join Kirkwood Nature Reserve and come out behind Queens Road station. The event was organised by a company called Duckie and funded by the Creation Trust, the charity set up to support residents of the Aylesbury Estate.

Chief executive, Charlotte Banstead, said: “Creation works with lots of older residents on the Aylesbury Estate. Sadly Swanky senior citizens were treated to the first ‘Posh Club’ on the Walworth estate last week.

HUNDREDS OF mourners were expected to turn out to pay their respects to a “kind and good-hearted” greatgrandmother at her funeral yesterday, after she was crushed by a lorry in Peckham High Street on Friday September 4.

Neil Coyle was elected the MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark in May this year, so after having just a few months to learn the ropes, he told the News he is going to have to “learn even quicker” to get to grips with his new role as PPS to Chris Bryant, MP - the shadow Leader of the House.

“The role will also give me a panorama of the whole business of Government in detail and how it will affect Southwark,” said Neil.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is going to be knocking on doors to check people who are claiming the single person council tax discount are living alone.

Starting this month, a selection of households currently claiming the 25 percent subsidy will be subject to checks using the latest data matching technology, working with credit reference agencies.

Residents who are found to be fraudulently claiming the discount could be fined £70, may face prosecution and will be required to pay back the amount that has been incorrectly

Councillor Fiona Colley, Southwark’s cabinet member for finance, said: “It’s really important that residents speak to us about any change in circumstances to avoid potential penalties.

“We need the right level of council tax to be able to pay for vital services that benefits all residents but unfortunately, there is a small number of people who are purposefully defrauding the council, which is why this review is so important.”

After her death, tributes came pouring into the News about the 76-year-old, who was at the heart of the Traveller community in Peckham after living in Brideale Close for 30 years.

THE FIVE candidates for the South Camberwell council byelection due to be held on October 15 have been announced.

Community activist Octavia Lamb has been put forward by Labour, communications specialist and TackleAfrica charity founder Ben Maitland for the Lib Dems and cycling activist and East Dulwich Estate Regeneration Project Team chair Eleanor Margolies by the Greens.

Transport consultant Chris Mottau has been nominated by the Conservatives and anti-crime

campaigner and former Labour councillor Stephen Govier by the All People’s Party. UKIP did not nominate a candidate.

Ladbrokes have announced their odds for the by-election, with Ms Lamb a clear favourite to retain Labour’s seat at 1/10. Ms Margolies is out at 10/1, Mr Mottau 16/1, Mr Maitland at 20/1 and Mr Govier the long-shot at 50/1.

The by-election was sparked when Labour councillor Chris Gonde stood down, citing a poor work-life balance in his resignation letter.

Former apprentice now heads team!

A FORMER apprentice at Southwark Council has won an achievement award as she is now heading up a team of eight people.

Erika Grudinskyte joined the council’s apprenticeship scheme in 2011 after being made redundant.

Last week she was awarded the London Borough Apprenticeship Award for ‘best progression’ as she is now a team manager in the specialist housing services department.

BAGS OF class A drugs were found at addresses across Southwark in a two day police operation last week which saw eighteen people arrested.

Properties in Elephant & Castle, Walworth Road, Browning Estate, Kinglake Estate, Albany Road and Burgess Park were raided in the joint operation between Southwark police and the Met’s Operation Teal taskforce, which focuses on knife

crime, on Thursday and Friday.

Plain clothed officers, drug dogs, mounted branch officers and the Marine Support Unit made arrests for possession with intent to supply drugs, assault, possession of offensive weapons, handling stolen goods, burglary, assault on police and immigration offences.

“A significant quantity” of Class A and class B drugs were recovered, according to Southwark police, as well as knives and large quantities of cash.

A BERMONDSEY fundraiser received a hero’s welcome last week when he returned from a gruelling charity cycle from London to St Petersburg, Russia.

Gavin Tiffin, the head of hospitality at Guy’s and St Thomas’, began his 2,000mile cycle on August 13 and arrived in the Russian city on September 3.

His exhausting challenge was in aid of Evelina London Children’s Hospital, as well as charities Breathe Arts Health Research and MediCinema, which use art to improve the lives of patients and their families.

Gavin celebrated his three-week, tencountry trip with a final fundraising gala on September 17 at St Thomas’ hospital.

Guests at the ceremony had the first viewing of a special film that the charity cyclist made on the road, which highlighted the many problems he encountered during his trip, including summer storms, accidents, broken bikes – and plenty of hills!

Gavin said: “I was very emotional when I reached St Petersburg. When it got tough I thought of my grandfather for motivation. He was a Royal Navy veteran who served in the Arctic Convoys delivering supplies to Russia

during the war. I never got to meet him, but hopefully by following his journey I will have made him proud.

“Although I can’t believe my journey is over, in a way it’s only just begun. I visited children’s hospitals in Warsaw and St Petersburg during my trip and hope to have established some really special relationships between them and Evelina London.”

Janet Powell, Director of Nursing at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, said: “The money Gavin has raised through his epic cycle to St Petersburg will allow children and young people being treated at Evelina London to experience and benefit from the healing powers of music and the arts.”

JUST WEEKS after climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the Evelina Children’s Hospital, News MD Chris Mullany got on his bike and cycled 185 miles from London to Paris in one day.

The double-whammy challenge raised another £2,300 in sponsorship – taking our fundraising total to £92,730, ever closer to our £100,000 target.

“It was tough but it was great,” said Chris of the 24-hour challenge, despite having only two hours’ sleep on the ferry and then cycling ten miles in the wrong direction from Dieppe in the dark!

To make it to Paris on time, the team of four - including Camberwell resident Lionel Healing, who was raising money for Save the Children and Raj Banjeree, whose sponsorship money went to Trinity Hospice - had to consult the map and cycle the remaining 120 miles through

France in ten hours.

Despite losing his passport on the way home and having to sweet-talk a customs officer, Chris said it was well worth the effort. “It’s a fantastic hospital. They get money from the NHS but our fundraising goes to buying specific things and if you were a parent with a child there you’d want them to have the very best.”

Both challenges were paid for out of Chris’s pocket, so every penny raised will go straight to the hospital where it is needed for equipment like intensive care cots and infant warming systems.

Two baby ventilators – £52k These ventilators are crucial for very premature babies. Babies who are born this early are perfectly formed, but their lungs are not developed.

Infant warming system – £15k This is an open cot that provides heat for babies that are really sick and can’t maintain their own temperature.

One intensive care cot – £19k Last year, Evelina treated 800 babies, of which 80 per cent were from Southwark and Lambeth. The intensive care cots are in high demand,

and are fully occupied day and night 80 to 100 per cent of the time. They need as many as they can get.

Evelina Hospital School – £14k The Evelina Hospital School provides one-to-one bedside tuition for older children at the hospital, many of whom are battling life-threatening illnesses. Last year they provided 1,500 children with education, but they are currently only funded for half of the places they need.

A JUNIOR football team are kicking off an Evelina fundraiser on Saturday with a ‘parents vs coaches’ tournament.

Jamie Mehmet, who runs the Ballers Football Academy in Rotherhithe, wanted to put on a charity match to help the News reach its £100,000 goal for the local children’s hospital.

But after he advertised the battle between parents and coaches, he was so overwhelmed by the response, he had to turn it into a tournament.

“It’s going to be a good day,” said Jamie, who hopes there will be a good turnout of supporters at the Docklands Community Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Kick-off is at 1pm so supporters are asked to arrive by 12.45 at the ground in Salter Road

Two extra C10 buses an hour ROTHERHITHE

THE SQUEAKY wheel has finally got the grease in Rotherhithe after it was announced that buses on the much-maligned C10 bus route would soon be dramatically increased in frequency.

A cross-party campaign has been rewarded with a decision by Transport to London to run at least two more buses per hour on the overcrowded journey between Canada Water and Victoria stations - which once held the dubious honour of being the second-most complained about route in London.

Passengers currently wait ten minutes for a bus during peak time, twelve minutes during off-peak, and twenty minutes on evenings and Sundays. From October 10, these waits will be reduced to seven-and-a-half minutes, eight minutes and twelve minutes, respectively.

“It’s great news that the service has been improved,” Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle, who organised a 300-strong petition to TfL demanding improvement while a councillor, told the News.

“This is one of these campaigns where people had a genuine concern. We got involved and made sure we kept the pressure on. It wasn’t just about a petition, there was a lot of work and people involved, and great that it’s been a success.”

Former MP Simon Hughes, who once invited the thenTfL Head of Surface Transport David Brown to take a trip with him on the criticised route, also welcomed the news.

He said: “It was great to lead the campaign with my councillor friends which led to the new C10 service some years ago. It is great that it has become so popular, and it is great that London Buses have now responded to the public and Liberal Democrat and Labour calls to increase the frequency of the service.”

Another fridge fire increases fears for safety SIX FIRE engines and 35 fire fighters tackled a fire caused by a fridge at a high rise block on Queen Elizabeth Street in Bermondsey last Thursday.

The Brigade was called just after 3.30 and was brought under control just after 4pm.

Crews from Dockhead, Poplar, Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, New Cross and Old Kent Road fire stations attended the incident.

In the summer of 2011, residents were evacuated from the 21-storey Lupin Point in Abbey Street Bermondsey after a faulty fridge sparked a fire on the 17th floor. Noone was injured but the incident did lead to a product recall for some models of Beko and LEC Fridge Freezers.

appealed to fridge freezer manufacturers to make their products safer, with one fridgerelated fire a week occurring in the capital.

London Fire Brigade Deputy Commissioner Rita Dexter said: “Every home has a fridge or freezer and the chances are it will be plugged in and working safely for years but it is no exaggeration to say that they are potentially the most dangerous household appliances if they are involved in a fire.

“They contain large amounts of highly flammable foam insulation, often only protected by a thin plastic covering. This can

be a recipe for disaster if a fault occurs or if a fire spreads from somewhere else to the fridge or freezer. They are also one of the few electrical items in your home to be always left on and these fires pose an even greater risk if they start when people are sleeping.

“Putting a simple non-combustible or fire retardant covering at the back of appliances is a relatively simple change that manufacturers can make and one that we believe would reduce the number of injuries, and potentially deaths, caused by fires involving fridges and freezers.”

Fires caused by fridges have led to seven deaths and 71 serious injuries since 2010 in London.

An investigation is ongoing

FROM 24TH June 2016 Southwark’s Labour administration will have made swimming and gyms use free and available to all Southwark’s residents.

Between then and now, the Free Swims and Gym offer is available to all 18s-and-Under and those aged 60 and over, 34% of Southwark’s population.

So your editorial of 24th September mocking Labour’s commitment to deliver on its manifesto promises is well wide of the mark. I know that keeping our promises to our electorate is an article of faith not just to me but to all my Labour colleagues.

Your claim that we should have targeted our promises at “those on the lowest income” and “those most in need” has some merits, but we are doing

that and more. We are working very hard behind the scenes and ensuring that, in your words, “swimming and gym use will be free for all residents in Southwark in council leisure centres”.

So I hope that come next summer we’ll be seeing Southwark News journalists, editors and owners down at the local leisure centre taking full advantage of the offer.

WHAT AN interesting slant on Dulwich Hamlet FC by David Arklane, (Turn Dulwich Hamlet’s ground into housing for refugees?

Letters, September 24th).

I can categorically assure him that the club remains very much a football club and, unlike many other non League clubs, a growing one thanks to the efforts of its Players, Management, Committee, Supporters' Trust and fans in general.

It is a community football club and so will have a conscience and, like many businesses (yes it is one), tries to respond to what its customers (fans) want. Those customers asked for permission to collect items for refugees, as they have done for local food banks, to support local charities, make students in the area feel welcome and support anti racism and anti homophobia initiatives.

The wider community responded to that request, as other people did across the borough, and a lot of items were collected to aid a humanitarian cause.

These items will be taken to people in Calais to help to alleviate their hardship.

I'm not quite sure how this equates to welcoming refugees to England, Southwark, Dulwich or anywhere else.

Our fans will not be going out to Calais to bring some back to the country or giving out free tickets to attend a game (as we do with lots of groups in Southwark), merely to deliver items that the community felt that they wanted to donate.

Finally, one good thing about Mr Arklane's letter is at least he didn't mention the word hipsters!

We’re a community club DAVID ARKLANE couldn’t have been further from the truth when he stated that “Dulwich Hamlet FC’s primary objective seems to have changed from being a football club to being a community conscience”.

In fact the primary aim is to be a successful as possible on the pitch as the team push for promotion to the National League South. But this aim goes hand in hand in reaching out on a vast swathe of community issues, the Calais humanitarian collection which he refers to, being just one of many. It was clearly a cause supported by our fans, and locals in general, with a huge amount collected and sorted by our Supporters’ Trust, with the Club being rewarded with the largest Ryman League gate of the season at any club of over 1,500 fans that day.

As can be seen by another news story your same issue, which highlights our ‘Pay What You Like’ fundraising match for our Ryman League game against VCD Athletic on Sunday 3rd October, for local mental health organisation Cooltan Arts & the British Heart Foundation, the Calais initiative was just one of many we carry out. As well as promotion another primary objective is being a Club where we reach out and help others, and that has been endorsed by our average home league crowd rocketing from 180 to over a thousand in the last six seasons.

With regard to redeveloping our ground... actually this is EXACTLY what Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, through our owners Hadley Property, ARE proposing. The aim being to have housing built on our current stadium, with a modern, sustainable venue for the whole community being built in tandem next door.. A development that will ensure that the Club is well-run & sustainable for many years to come, rather than the uncertainly of the last couple of decades.

I’m not sure if Mr. Arklane is a regular at Champion Hill, a lapsed fan, or neither. But if we wishes to contact me at the Club then I shall be more than happy to furnish him with some complimentary tickets for a forthcoming home match so he can see for himself what the primary aim of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club is.

PCSO changes are a cutback too far

RECENTLY attended a meeting of the Borough, Bankside and Walworth Community Council, where tragically an extra item had to be added to the agenda, as a senior Southwark police officer spoke emotionally to residents following the fatal stabbing of a teenage boy, DuruRay Mohamed, which had taken place that week.

The local community were urged to come forward with any information or local knowledge which might assist with the investigation. The officer concluded by adding that he had also had the unenviable task of telling all of the borough’s Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) that they were all at risk of redundancy due to proposals to reduce budgets. The juxtaposition of these two issues speaks volumes – the police need the community to help them tackle these most serious of crimes, while their management is proposing removing the very staff members who have become key in undertaking this kind of work.

PCSOs do what it says on the tin – they provide community support. They are a uniformed, reassuring presence on the streets and develop valuable relationships with community stakeholders. If they are removed, an important resource will be lost and police officers will be further overburdened.

When Safer Neighbourhood Teams were launched, every ward had its own sergeant, two police officers and up to three PCSOs. Police were visible on the streets and the public were reassured. This was recently abandoned with a return to ‘sector based’ policing – each ward had one police officer and one PCSO, supposedly supported by a ‘sector’ team who would attend wards as and when necessary. Now ‘Safer Neighbourhood Teams’ do not really exist any longer and if PCSOs are removed, each team will be a team of one - so not actually a team!

Ward officers are doing similar workloads with fewer colleagues and if plans to cut PCSOs are approved, this will get even worse. With at least £800m of expected cuts hanging over the Met, there is a real question as to whether the police service as we know it will exist in ten years’ time I believe this is a cut too far. Ordinary Londoners living in Southwark are already dealing with massive cuts on a number of levels. We have already seen our numbers of police officers and PCSO’s reduced and we’ve lost fire engines and had fire stations closed down.

For London’s emergency services, it’s difficult to see a legacy which the departing Mayor can be proud of.

Globe sees death of theatre IT’S BACK to school season but in Nell Gwynn, Jessica Swale has written a play with a very end of term feel. This is a straightforwardly funny portrayal of the Cinderella style tale of Nell, the orange seller who rises to be the beloved mistress of Charles II, writes Katie Kelly...

There are laughs from the opening exchange between Nell and Charles Hart, the actor who gives her a leg up and over into the trade. Nell is no shrinking violet it is clear. She delights in flouting convention. It was a radical thing at the time for women to be employed as actresses.

This is pointed out with marvellous outrage by the displaced leading ‘lady’ of the company, Edward Kynaston; who on hearing that a woman is playing in a rival company exclaims that this will be “the death of theatre” A lot of fun is had in this play at the expense of theatre and, indeed, the bard himself. Queen of comic timing. So much so that she drew a huge cheer from audience at the close.

If the first act has a bit of a ‘Carry On’ feel to it, in the best possible way, or should I say taste, the second has more depth. The ability of the cast to turn on a sixpence between poignant moments and comedy, without compromising either, was truly impressive and gave the piece a richness it might otherwise have lacked.

Nell is never less than frisky and the King laps this up and plays along, but he also describes the terror that remains with him from having watched the execution of his father. Nell suffers significant losses of relationships and family members, and these are not glossed over. Ultimately she triumphs over her critics, changed but not crushed.

If your summer has lacked warmth this play is the perfect antidote.

Dinner with Saddam I GUESS you could usually use many words to describe life in Baghdad during the Gulf War, tragic or terrifying for example, but funny just doesn't spring to the front of your mind does it?

Writes Matt Baker...

The play focuses on an ordinary Iraqi family dealing with the everyday, mundane problems caused by conflict such as no water, little food and the fear of bombing.

Then their world is thrown into further disarray when Saddam arrives for a spot of dinner, accompanied by his murderous henchmen. What followed was a farce. And a very, very good one at that. The gags come thick and fast and seemed all the better for the surreal setting.

Sanjeev Bhaskhar played the family patriarch wonderfully and as the plot builds and his behaviour became incredibly insane the harder the audience laughed. Great fun.

Steven Berkoff played a funny Saddam. Now, as I look back at the

As 'That's All Volks' was a stunning musical, with great songs, romance, social comment and Angela Merkel. Not to mention the finest Ronan Keating impression you won't ever see.

However, this masterpiece of theatre, will never be seen again.

And they don't disappoint. How anybody is supposed to improvise a Grease style show number about a Volkswagen with a double flux capacitor, including dance routine I don't know. But this happened, right in front of our eyes. And it was fantastic. Seldom have I laughed so much in the West End. At the end the audience gave the cast and musicians a well deserved standing ovation.

But what truly led me to understand that this is something very special was the reaction of my plus one for the evening, Keith. A man so bereft of culture he considers Terminator 'a bit wordy',

The sordid history of Brunel’s tunnel

WHILE IT may seem strange today with our 270-station tube system, the so-called ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’ was once an underground tunnel from Rotherhithe to Wapping, writes Joey Millar...

The Thames Tunnel, completed by Marc Isambard Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1843,

was undeniably a feat of engineering for the time.

The entrance hall was built above ground and then ingeniously sunk into the bank of the Thames under its own weight, highlighting the logistical gymnastics required to build the world’s first underwater tunnel.

Visitors flocked to the tunnel after it opened, with 50,000 paying a penny apiece to walk through it on the first day. One million people – half the city’s population at the time – had paid to walk ‘the shining avenue to Wapping’ within three months, including Queen Victoria.

In July of that year Her Majesty made a trip ‘down under’, where a patriotic – or perhaps, entrepreneurial – Bermondsey trader laid down silk handkerchiefs upon the muddy floor for her to walk on.

It is said that for the rest of his life the cheeky stall holder made his living selling the hankies muddied by the Queen – although suspiciously it

appears that his supply of dirty hankies was endless, with the boot prints upon them far too big for a woman.

But once the initial novelty wore off – and especially once the sun went down – the tunnel turned a little more sinister.

“Any self-respecting person wouldn’t be seem dead down there after dark,” Robert Hulse, director of the Brunel Museum, told the News.

“Because it was just a penny to enter, a lot of people would spend the night down there. Pickpockets, thieves, cutpurses, tricksters, conmen, prostitutes – they were all there.”

Many sick, homeless people would use the tunnel as a place to sleep, which quickly led to it being nicknamed ‘Hades Hotel’, after the Greek god of the underworld and death.

Robert said: “Because the poor, the unhealthy and the elderly would shelter in the tunnel, every morning it was somebody’s job to clear out the corpses.”

Even the living took on a deathly

appearance, he added.

“The underground stallholders, who were mostly women, soon began to look like ghosts, or waifs. For a lot of them, they would get down in the tunnel to start work before the sun came up, and would work until after it set in the evening. They would not see any sunlight and began to resemble strange vampire shopkeepers.”

The chilly, damp, surroundings predictably spooked many visitors to the tunnel - including Robert, all these years later.

He said: “Six engineers died during construction and many others died while sleeping in the tunnel. I haven’t seen any ghosts - but even I don’t like going down into some of the places sometimes.”

Because of all the quiet archways and dark corners, during the tunnel’s sordid heyday there was also plenty of ‘snogging in the tunnel’ – to put it mildly.

Robert said: “The tunnel was open

24/7 and rarely policed. After sunset it got a bit sleazy.”

However, in 1865 the tunnel was bought by the railway, who redeveloped it for train travel. The homeless, thieves, prostitutes – and corpses – were cleared one last time and Rotherhithe’s bizarre underworld was no more.

The monthly speakeasy night at Jack’s Bar doesn’t go the whole hog and serve ‘tea’ in china cups but they do have musicians in braces who add more than an air of authenticity to the evening, writes Amelia Burr…

In fact, these wandering minstrels encapsulate something of the spirit of this trendy, but not too trendy, watering hole. The band of merry men circle around the tables, belting out well-known tunes skiffle style in a way that makes it all seem perfectly unrehearsed. You’re

seduced into feeling that this is the kind of place where things like that just happen – men singing in braces at your table? That’s Jack’s!

It’s 6.00 on a Friday night and for an off the beaten track bar - it’s heaving. Tucked behind Southwark station in Isabella Street, Jack’s is housed in an old railway arch but despite the cavernous space, there is an air of intimacy. Lamps, bookshelves and comfy chairs are bathed in very soft lighting – I had to hold my menu under a nearby light to read it – so the vibe feels relaxed and easy even when it’s rammed.

As my friend Adam and I sit down at a cosy table for two I’m positioned perfectly for some people-watching. It feels ‘young’ but I am not alone here as someone approaching the term ‘mid-thirties.’

Jack’s has that touch of class typical of the Waterloo area, which makes it a no-go for those twenty-somethings seeking two for one WKDs and jugs of Jaeger bombs.

Instead it offers a Bellini served by a beautifully tattooed waitress as you limber up for a round of ping pong – much more up my street.

Jack’s is one of a group of four nearby bars belonging to the Windmill Tavern group, including The Windmill on The Cut, The Ring on Blackfriars Road and the King’s Arms on Tooley Street.

There are plenty of craft beers on tap – especially now Jack’s is celebrating Oktoberfest - but my eye was on the prohibition cocktails, especially after I found out two of the bar staff were trained at the European Bartender School in Barcelona.

I started off with a French 75, which, made with Prosecco, Beefeater gin and a good squeeze of lemon juice, gave my taste buds a friendly kick out of bed. The Mary Pickford – made with white rum and Maraschino liqueur, was a more glamourous affair in one of those ‘champagne saucer’ glasses which instantly transforms a drink into an accessory.

The hands-down favourite, however, was the Passion Fruit Martini from the regular drinks menu. I’m a fan of the Amaretto Sour and similarly, this one hits you right in the sweet and sour spot.

Adam and I put away five between

us before I remembered I would need to include more than one drink in this review.

Compliments to my companion for being so comfortable in his masculinity that when one of our lovely waitresses asked to take his drinks order he replied – “I just want something with raspberries in it.”

Speaking of which, the table service is excellent – friendly, frequent and efficient. We had four different waitresses come to our table and each coped beautifully with Adam’s awkward attempts at flirting (I think) – even more entertaining than the band.

We ordered something to eat to soak up the Martinis and that is pretty much the function of the food menu at Jack’s – burgers, pizzas and hotdogs to keep you going. Adam was unimpressed with his hotdog, but his opinion was undermined when he said even a Bratwurst wouldn’t have been good enough – that’s just crazy talk.

My mushroom burger- a stack of Portobellos with goats cheese in a bun - did exactly what it said on the tin and teed me up for some more cocktails for pudding.

I can see why Jack’s is a popular spot on a Friday night – it’s got that quality which attracts you to places and people alike – it’s self-assured.

It’s a space which feels good to be in…and with a passion fruit Martini on your arm it feels even better.

MILLWALL ROMPED to their first home league win of the season against Rochdale on Saturday.

The Lions picked up their first three points in League One at The Den in a 31 win over Keith Hill’s men.

Jimmy Abdou had been told before the game to get into forward positions more often by manager Neil Harris, and the midfielder duly obliged when, on four minutes, he gave his side the lead.

Steve Morison and Aiden O’Brien did all the hard work after a sloppy pass from Rochdale keeper Josh Lillis, and when the Irish striker crossed low the unmarked Abdou arrived to stylishly slot home.

The home faithful were enjoying what they were seeing until the 43rd minute when former Lion Peter Vincenti levelled.

Ian Henderson sprung the offside trap to cross to Joe Bunney who volleyed into the ground before the ball fell to Vincenti and, from point-blank range, he headed home.

The Den crowd could have been forgiven for thinking it would be the same old story in SE16 but, two minutes later, Shaun Williams was on hand to restore the Lions’ lead.

O’Brien was again the provider when he played the ball inside from the right and found Williams who sidestepped a Rochdale defender before lashing home into the roof of the net.

The visitors had several spells of pressure which they failed to capitalise on as the Lions soaked up the danger, eventually adding their third and putting the fixture beyond the Greater Manchester side.

O’Brien secured a hat-trick off assists when he turned and played in Morison, taking out three Rochdale players in the process.

Morison then stormed his way into the penalty area before lofting the ball elegantly over an onrushing Lillis in the Rochdale goal to give the Lions their first home league win of the season at the fifth attempt.

Winger maintained mature perspective during spell out of Millwall side

WHEN YOU’VE played in the feral atmosphere of the Old Firm derby Saturday afternoons at The Den might seem welcoming by comparison.

Lee Martin has been at clubs where derbies like those in Glasgow, Manchester and East Anglia can end up defining seasons.

But while he might not be able to exactly identify with the tribal and sectarian spite that descends on meetings between Celtic and Rangers, he shares a similar working class background to most of The Den patrons.

That gives him an appreciation of what they look for in their team and the mutual benefits when players and fans feed off the energy of the other.

“The Glasgow derby when I played with Rangers was bonkers, that was crazy,” he said. “The Den can be intimidating both ways but up there it's hatred. It was a spectacle, I’ll put it that way. I only played 20 minutes but it was something else.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere last Saturday but even before that I thought

the Southend game was excellent as well. I think we’re both coming together now which is really important.

“The last couple of home games there is a belief that has transferred from the players to the fans. There now seems to be a genuine feeling that we can do well.

There was a bit of an atmosphere before but I think now we’ve turned it and the players are proving to the fans that we’re trying to do well.

“The fans are hardworking family men and women. So as long as you are working hard and showing that commitment that goes a long way.”

He had been out of the team for a protracted spell before coming on for the last ten minutes in that 3-1 win over Rochdale, but personal circumstances that included moving away from home at 16 to pursue his dreams of making it at one of the biggest clubs in the world have strengthened his resolve.

Martin explained: “I grew up around the corner (from the training ground). A lot of my mates are Millwall fans so I knew a lot about the club before I signed. I was at Millwall on trial when I was a youngster. I lived in a council house so we understand… a lot of us didn’t grow up with silver spoons so we

understand that it’s hardworking families that pay good money to watch us and it’s important that we go out and show something to them.

“I went to Manchester when I was 16 from Wimbledon. It was difficult to adapt but it was good fun. I was in a bit of a bubble but looking back on it it was quite a big thing. I went into digs originally with (current Leicester defender) Danny Simpson.

“My dad had a stroke so my mum was his full-time carer and they moved up and we stayed there together. Things that happen to you when you’re young you probably don’t take in when they're happening. It’s only when you get a little bit older that the penny drops, but all the things you’ve experienced up to that stands you in good stead.”

He probably needed to call on that perspective during his time out of the team following the poor run of home results in August. But an injury to Paris Cowan-Hall led to Martin’s recall to the bench last Saturday and he was eager to take his chance with an aggressive cameo.

He said: “It’s been a long time and I was delighted to get some minutes. You want to play football, I was just training

recently and not playing. I’ve been in that situation before. It’s not like I can’t handle it, that’s what football is like.

“It’s just about getting your head down and working hard and once the opportunity arises taking it.

“When I went to Ipswich I was out of the team for a while so the best way to get back in is to work hard. At the end of the day you can’t change anything, it’s the manger’s decision so you have to work hard.

He added: “My poor wife has had to deal with me disappointed and frustrated but I try not to let it get to me as much as I used to as a kid because things can change dramatically and quickly. I’m in a better place mentally to deal with that disappointment and then come back stronger.

“When you’re younger it’s the first time you’ve experienced everything and you think it’ll last forever.

“Sometimes it swings around quite quick and you’ll get your opportunity.

Obviously it’s unfortunate for Paris, it’s something like that that leads to me getting my chance. It’s disappointing for him but that’s football. I don’t like getting into a team that way but that’s how football works.”

IT’S BEEN all change at Peterborough since the two clubs met in the Football League Trophy at The Den on September 1.

Millwall’s 1-0 victory over then manager Dave Robertson’s side courtesy of Shaun Williams’ injury-time winner was the first of three wins in a row for the Lions.

But Robertson lasted just one more match when he was dismissed by chairman Darragh MacAnthony in the wake of a 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe.

The immediate result was an upturn in form as Peterborough went to Oldham in their next game where ironically their 5-1 win at Boundary Park brought Darren Kelly’s short spell in charge to a crushing end.

Graham Westley was appointed manager last week and got off to the perfect start when goals from Lee Angol and Chris Forrester gave his new side a 2-0 win at Bradford City last Saturday.

Neil Harris said after the last spell of three games in seven days when his side lost 2-0 at home to Southend that the game was one too far for some of his players, and he could have a similar decision to make before the trip to Peterborough.

The Millwall boss stressed during the week he has the strength in depth in his squad to adjust his team shape and has also shown his tactical flexibility this season. He switched to 4-3-3 before the 0-0 draw at Scunthorpe, but the return to full match sharpness of Aiden O’Brien allowed a return to 4-4-2, which paid off spectacularly at Crewe.

There is a nice symmetry about this weekend’s meeting with the Posh and a

similar result and potential subsequent surge in performance levels and form in October to that produced in September will leave the Lions in a healthy position going into the crucial winter period.

That was when it all started to really unravel badly last season as Ian Holloway failed to arrest a slide with a number of veteran loan signings in January.

Harris shifted the emphasis perceptibly in the last game of last season and continued the remodelling job on the squad during the summer.

Kenny Jackett believes it’s much more difficult dropping a division than jumping up one and August was a harsh lesson in the difficulty of readjusting to life a level below for a number of players, most notably David Forde and Lee Martin who both suffered early losses of form.

step up to the mark. Jordan Archer and 18-year-old Fred Onyedinma were the brightest sparks in a difficult start to the season, and in the last month O’Brien, Mark Beevers, Carlos Edwards and Steve Morison have all taken on the fight.

The form of Shaun Williams has also been key. He was clearly off colour and low on confidence earlier in the season but his mood has completely changed to the extent he looks the cornerstone on which the general levels of the side can often depend. He always had the skill but he has added aggression and authority to go with it, as well as proving he has an up until now hidden goalscoring knack when he gets into forward positions.

Peterborough will present a renewed threat, but Millwall have improved since that 1-0 win a month ago and it should be a fascinating duel.

The dangerous James finds space in the box but he sends his effort well over Archer’s crossbar and into the away fans

MOMENTS AFTER the final whistle at the DW Stadium on Tuesday night Neil Harris was straining over a laptop with goalkeeping coach Kevin Pressman and video analyst Dan McLoone to determine the cause of the injury-time equaliser that denied Millwall what would have been a smash-and-grab raid on Wigan Athletic.

He concluded that his goalkeeper Jordan Archer had made the right decision to come for the corner that arced into the box in the 92nd minute, but that his execution of the punch was off.

As a result the ball had brushed off Archer’s glove before rebounding to substitute Will Grigg who turned to fire the ball past Byron Webster retreating towards the goal line.

It was tough on Archer who had earlier produced a fine save at full stretch to tip Michael Jacobs’ shot over the bar.

In truth, Wigan deserved a point from a game that was scoreless at half-time but ebbed and flowed in the second half with the outcome remaining in doubt as the clock ticked past the 96th minute until referee Geoff Eltringham sounded his final whistle.

Wigan’s supporters, appreciative for the most part of their side’s commitment to passing the ball, had begun trickling towards the exits with the Lions leading 2-1 heading into added time. They would have felt it was harsh on their side after they had imposed their style on Millwall, pinning their opponents back in the first half but without really threatening to test Archer.

Gary Caldwell had set his side up in a fluid 3-5-2 formation, but Chris McCann on the left side of the back three had licence to roam forward with Sean Murray often dropping back to cover.

It was an imaginative gameplan, with left wing-back Reece James in particular pushing well up on veteran Carlos Edwards and as well as testing the 36-year-old’s powers of concentration and stamina, it also tested Millwall’s defensive shape.

The Millwall manager felt his side were comfortable allowing their opponents have the ball, and Wigan’s two best chances of the opening half fell to James but he sent both efforts over Archer’s crossbar.

With David Perkins linking well with Jacobs and striker Jordy Hiwula, Wigan constructed some fine moves but they often broke down after a little bit too much intricacy outside Millwall’s box.

the decision to rest Fred Onyedinma and Steve Morison before introducing them in the second half that looked to have swung the balance in the away side’s favour.

Onyedinma had started every game this season but had also looked in need of a rest recently. And within six minutes of his introduction he had

pulled his side level after showing the presence of mind to follow up in the box after Jimmy Abdou had been tackled and sweep the loose ball past Richard O’Donnell in the Wigan goal.

Ironically given all of Wigan’s careful approach play it was a mistake from Shaun Williams that had led to their opening goal 53 minutes in.

Meanwhile Millwall’s League One clash with Doncaster has been rescheduled for Tuesday October 27 due to the possibility of international call-ups.

The fixture was to have taken place at The Den on October 10 but with up to six Lions players potentially on international duty the game has been put back.

Millwall’s trip to Burton on November 14 could also be moved if three or more players are called up by their countries.

The 18-year-old was on the bench for the Lions in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium, but came on after 63 minutes before finding the back of the net six minutes later.

It was the first time this season Onyedinma had been left out of the starting side and he said he was comfortable with the role as Millwall preserved their unbeaten away start.

“I'm pleased with my goal,” Onyedinma told the News. “That's what I had to do. I had to come on and try and do something - so I've done my job.

“I was okay with being a substitute, I think I needed a rest.

“I was wandering around in the box when we went forward and luckily the ball came to me and all I had to do was pass it into the net.

“The manager said do what I can and I had 30 minutes to do it.

“He was obviously disappointing that we drew from a 2-1 scoreline but if you had told me we would get a point against a really good Wigan side I would have taken it.”

The attacker admitted it is still a step up for him from last season after his loan spell with League Two side Wycombe and felt Wigan were one of the best sides the Lions have faced so far this season.

“My preparation has to be better as I'm playing every single game and I have to be ready for Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday.
