A NURSE who bribed a corrupt Southwark Council housing officer to get a council flat in Peckham has been thrown out of the profession, after a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing.

Theresa Okondunjokanma was jailed for eighteen months last September for council housing fraud, after submitting a series of bogus documents, including birth certificates for other people's children.

The NMC panel heard on May 26 that her dodgy documents were accepted with a £2,000 bribe by Southwark Council officer Trudy Ali-Balogun, in May 2004.

Ali-Balogun, 55, was jailed for five years in May 2016, after she pushed through 24 fraudulent applications for council homes

between 2003 and 2005. Ali-Balogun made at least £20,000 in backhanders, predominantly helping the Nigerian community in London obtain the public housing.

Okondunjokanma's fraudulent application cost the taxpayer an estimated £100,000 and she was charged on three counts of fraud.

Having illegally gained the Peckham council house, she profited by subletting it to her sister in 2009.

Okondunjokanma was not present at last week’s panel hearing, and submitted evidence via written statements to the NMC. NMC panel chair Kenneth Caley said: “The panel noted that Ms Okondunjokanma has [portrayed] herself as the victim in her emails and statements to the NMC.”

What to ask your Tory candidate about on the doorstep

W

ITH POLLING day just around the corner, not enough attention has been given on the national stage to the government’s proposed changes to school funding, which would be devastating for Southwark.

The formula, which aims to even out the funding gap between rural and inner-city schools, is universally condemned in our borough. The research shows that schools in Bermondsey and Old Southwark would likely lose £1,051 (fifteen per cent) per child over five years. Schools in Camberwell and Peckham would lose £1,003 per pupil.

When the Prime Minister called this snap election, it did put the brakes on this proposal, but any hope of a u-turn from Theresa May has not happened, despite an increasing chance of back-bench rebellion on the issue.

Instead we are told that it will be reviewed if and when she is back behind the door of number 10.

A pledge of £4bn in the Conservative election manifesto to the overall schools budget will not be enough to convince our head teachers, who face a hopeless situation.

The News has heard head teacher after head teacher ask from where Mrs May suggests we make the cuts. Staff?

Educational trips? GCSE courses? Mental health support?

Poverty at home has always been the clearest marker of how a child will do at school. A good, well-resourced school can help weaken that link and give those children a better future. But by cutting the budgets of those schools doing the most work to help disadvantaged pupils, Mrs May is setting many of those children up to fail.

This ill fought out formula has even seen Tory MPs - including those in very rural constituencies who were among some of the high-profile campaigners for it express disappointment with the government’s proposals. The fact is they can see that increasing funding for more than 10,700 schools might be good, but not at the expense of the 9,128 that will lose out severely .

Torys candidates on the doorsteps of Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Peckham and Camberwell and Dulwich and West Norwood should be asked exactly where they stand on this proposal.

Make sure you ask them, as this will directly affect your child’s immediate future. While they do not have much chance of winning in any of the three seats being contested – the message needs to get back to Conservative HQ and Mrs May that even if she wins on June 8, she should not push forward with this illconceived formula.

A FLUFFY robotic animal has been given the seal of approval by elderly day centre users.

Age UK Lewisham and Southwark has been using an android seal called PARO to work with older people at its Stones End day centre.

proven stress relief, relaxation and motivation benefits, particularly for people with dementia.

Just as cats and dogs are more commonly used as therapeutic companions for older people in care settings, the white fluffy seal was specially designed for places like hospitals and care facilities.

With tactile light, audio, temperature and posture sensors, the seal can perceive people and its environment – it senses being stroked and can recognise the direction of voice and words, such as its name, greeting and praise.

By interacting with people, PARO responds as if it is alive, moving its head and legs, making sounds, and showing the person’s preferred behaviour. It also imitates the voice of

a real baby harp seal.

The centre managed to buy the device thanks to funding from Aberdeen Asset Management.

Jack Leahy, deputy manager of the centre, said: “[The robotic seal] has become a popular resource and is part of a range of therapies and activities that our centre users enjoy.

“Our aim as a charity is to reduce social isolation among older people and in our area, 60 per cent of whom report feeling alone. For some, coming to the centre is their only outing in a week.

“We’re very grateful to receive the support of Aberdeen Asset Management which is helping us to recruit a wide range of volunteers who contribute hugely to the welcoming and fun service we provide for our members.”

Akai Coleman had the chance to commentate on the entire Huddersfield v Reading match at Wembley on Monday, May 29, after winning a competition.

The twelve-year-old revelled in the opportunity to interview the Huddersfield Town players after they won on penalties – and even sprayed the team with Champagne.

“I got to interview Huddersfield defender Tareiq Holmes-Dennis – he’s my cousin – and a German player,” said Akai, who lives in Rotherhithe.

“I got to throw Champagne over them. It was amazing and I wasn’t nervous one bit.”

Akai beat 117 other entrants in a competition run by Nickelodeon as part of their weekly English Football League programme, Nick Kicks, on Nicktoons.

He said he would love to commentate on a match again and hoped there would be more opportunities in the future.

“I want to thank all the Nickelodeon team and all the people who voted for me and for giving me the experience,” he said.

“It was absolutely amazing,” Akai’s mum, Adede, added. “The atmosphere was out of this world.

“He was just in his element and he was professional and just enjoyed every bit of it.”

Residents flee as ‘cigarette’ sparks estate balcony blaze

POLICE, FIRE officers and an air ambulance were called to a balcony blaze at the Aylesbury Estate, believed to have been caused by a cigarette.

It has been confirmed by the Met that no one was found injured following the fire on Saturday May 28, at about 6pm.

Sister Catherine Msoni, manager of a foodbank located in Thurlow Lodge (at the ground floor of Wendover), said more than 50 people gathered to watch, as about ten residents were evacuated.

“A lot of people were standing watching the big fire. People came around from Burgess Park to watch what was going on,” Sister Catherine said.

A STASH of suspected drugs were found at a property in Rotherhithe after it was raided by armed officers.

The property, in Hawkstone Road, was raided on the afternoon of Friday, May 26, by detectives from the Trident and Area Crime Command, and armed officers from the Specialist Firearms Command.

A quantity of suspected class B drugs were discovered, but police are still awaiting test results.

There have been no arrests and inquiries continue.

The incident was not terror-related.

A MOPED rider was taken to hospital following a collision with a car in Bermondsey.

Police were called to a crash at the junction of Drummond Road and Jamaica Road by London Ambulance Service shortly after 7pm on Tuesday, May 30.

The driver of the moped was taken to hospital but there were no updates on his injuries by the time the News went to press.

Jamaica Road was blocked off at the junction of Southwark Park Road following the incident.

There have been no arrests.

In her letter dated April 24, 2017, Okondunjokanma stated that she gone through: “the trauma of crown court, imprisonment and compensation of £20,000 paid to Southwark Council for a case [which] I’m only a victim of circumstance.”

The panel noted an apology made by Okondunjokanma, but Mr Caley said: “The panel was of the view that she has not taken responsibility for her role in her crime…

“The seriousness of the dishonesty led the panel to conclude that Ms Okondunjokanma’s behaviour is fundamentally incompatible with being a registered professional.

“The panel is of the view that the public would expect Ms Okondunjokanma to be removed from the NMC’s register as a result of her actions.

“A striking-off order is the only sanction that would satisfy the public interest in order to maintain public confidence in the profession and the NMC as its regulatory body.”

Okondunjokanma's criminal trial (in September 2016) ended Southwark Council's crackdown on council housing fraud known as Operation Bronze which opened in 2011 and achieved 38 convictions, resulting in 42 properties being reallocated to genuine applicants.

Woman and child escape as car bursts into flames The car on fire in Consort Road

A WOMAN and child had a lucky escape after their car spontaneously burst into flames in Peckham.

Police taped off Consort Road on the morning of Friday, May 26, to stop any members of the public from going near the blaze.

Eyewitness Adam Mizou, owner of Station Barbers by Peckham Rye Station, told the News that he saw the incident unfold.

“A lady and her young son were riding in the car, and suddenly the fire started,” Adam said.

“I saw them get out of the car, and it got burnt completely. It was a big fire” He said both the woman and the child escaped uninjured.

He added: “I went to speak to them and they were both really shocked, but they weren’t hurt. They were cool.

I think it was caused by leaking petrol, but you couldn’t tell, everything was on fire.”

The London Fire Brigade confirmed that they were called to the scene on Consort Road just after 11:30am.

A Brigade spokeswoman said fifteen calls were received about the blaze, and three fire engines were sent.

A Met Police spokesman said officers had closed the road to “stop people getting too close to it.”

Schools in the borough could also face a double whammy if their funding isn’t topped up to meet increasing demand from population growth, and pressure from rising inflation.

The day of protest, organised by the ‘Fair Funding for All Schools’ campaign, began with a gathering outside Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, attended by parliamentary candidates for Dulwich and West Norwood: Gail Kent (Liberal Democrats) and Helen Hayes (Labour).

At the end of the school day parents and pupils marched from Dulwich Hamlet Junior School to Brockwell Park, passing Dulwich Village Infants, Judith Kerr Primary, the Charter School, and Rosendale Primary along the way.

Parliamentary candidates for Camberwell and Peckham also joined a protest march to Peckham Rye Park, where parents and kids held a picnic and poster competition.

Rosalind Archer, who has children at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, said: “At a private school the funding equals £6,000 per pupil. My children get £4,000 each, and the cuts would mean reducing that to £3,500.

How can children at this school be worth so much less?

“At Charter School they stand to lose £1m per year. How would they afford to replace computers, or plug holes in the buildings when they need to?”

Labour has pledged to improve school funding with a £5.6bn package, while the Lib Dems have promised £7bn.

The Conservatives’ election manifesto has pledged to increase the overall schools budget by £4bn by 2022, “representing more than a real terms increase for every year of the parliament”.

Andy Skipwith, a governor at Dulwich Hamlet Junior School, said: “At the moment, this school is just about managing to balance its books, but only just.

“Any cuts would definitely mean losing staff, starting straight away.

This school is already topped up by parents’ fundraising.”

Coronet to go out with a bang on New Year’s Eve

THE CORONET Theatre will close its doors for the last time on January 1, 2018, its managers have confirmed.

The 145-year-old venue, first opened as the Elephant and Castle Theatre, before becoming an ABC cinema, and later became a music and night clubbing venue.

Its closure will coincide with the redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre site, by developer Elephant & Castle Properties Co. Ltd, part owned by multinational property firm Delancey.

The closure date of January 1 was confirmed to the News by manager Sam Porter. “We will run the business up until the last day we can,” Sam said. “We have had to accept our fate, so we are just making it the best year we can and hopefully will enjoy what we have left.”

The Coronet was previously granted a one year extension to its lease (which now expires on January 5) due to delays with demolishing the shopping centre site. The demolition is now expected in 2019, according to a report published ahead of Southwark Council Cabinet Meeting on May 9.

The venue, which hires more than 70 staff, will have its final event on New Year’s Eve.

Pearlies’ charity sets up mobile unit, so homeless ex-service men and women can get their hair cut and have a shower

A CHARITY has launched a mobile care unit offering haircuts and washing facilities to homeless ex-servicemen and women.

Jimmy Jukes MBE, founder of UK Homes4Heroes, and charity director Michelle Thorpe converted an old St John’s Ambulance trailer into a mobile one-stop shop for exservicemen and women living on the streets.

‘Pearly King' of Peckham and Camberwell Jimmy first had the idea four years ago, but never had the funding for it to get off the ground – until now.

The pair launched the mobile care unit in Waterloo on Sunday (May 28) and have already had their first visitors through the door.

“We believe it’s the first of its kind in the UK,” said Michelle, aged 49.

“We do haircuts and clean clothes when they come in and they can have showers, shave, and clean their teeth.

“We first had the idea about four years ago, but never really had the money in the charity to do it. But last year we had some generous donations and supporters so we could do it. It’s been a dream come true.”

The mobile clinic will be available in different places on rotation.

“We help as many people as we can,” said 61-year-old Jimmy, who founded the charity back in 2010.

“The people who’ve used it so far have been over the moon. It’s a lifeline and it’s a helpline to these people.

“One of the men was telling me that to go and get a shower he had to book five days in advance to get one in Waterloo.”

Jimmy said he set up the charity in 2010 out of “pure frustration”, after one of his friends was injured while serving as a soldier.

“A friend of mine was blown up in 2007,” he said. “When he came out in 2009 after being put back together and rehabilitated, he found himself homeless and I put him up for a little while and took him round to Southwark Council, but they didn’t want to know.

“The charity was born out of pure frustration that one of our boys could go out and fight for our country and come back and be on the streets. It’s not right.”

New face of Tower Bridge Road BERMONDSEY

PLANS TO bring together three buildings in Bermondsey to provide 69 apartments and a 137-bed ‘aparthotel’ have been given the go ahead by the council.

The existing site at 151-157 Tower Bridge Road already features 106 residential apartments, a 41-unit aparthotel – a hotel providing selfcatering apartments as well as ordinary hotel facilities – and flexible office/retail.

However, First Base and Starwood Capital instructed global architecture practice Arney Fender Katsalidis to design a scheme to refurbish the existing buildings and to reduce the residential apartments to 69, but expand the aparthotel.

The architects also plan to install balconies on to the buildings and revamp the ground-floor commercial space, some of which currently sits empty.

The ground floor of the buildings are expected to bring together a community of independent shops and boutiques, as well as flexible workspace for creative businesses in Bermondsey.

A new courtyard will also be built at the heart of the development with mature trees planted and a seating area.

Commenting on the planning approval, director of First Base Barry Jessup said: “We are delighted that Southwark Council share our enthusiasm for bringing forward these unique and characterful buildings to Bermondsey.

“As with all First Base schemes, we

look forward to combining high-quality architecture that will become iconic to this area with active and enlivened public spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Earl Arney, of Arney Fender Katsalidis, added: “We are delighted with our collaboration with First Base and Starwood Capital and the design vision we created with Southwark. 151157 Tower Bridge Road is a project of civic repair at both the architectural and urban scale.

“Existing structures are adaptively reused, delivering much-needed housing for Londoners in a significantly reduced time period, while also enhancing the environmental sustainability of the development. The result is a reduction of over 1,800 tonnes of CO2 which is equivalent to 720,000 new trees.”

Film school is coming soon

DULWICH : A school for children, teaching them how to get into filmmaking, will be coming this summer.

Courses will be running in Bell House on College Road, Dulwich with lessons in directing, acting, editing and shooting all being made available. The summer film shoot runs all throughout July and August with each course lasting five days, suitable for seven to fourteen year olds.

The Sparks Film Company was founded in 2010 by Farrell and Donna Bamford, already establishing itself in several parts of London. Their motive behind the formation of Sparks was simple: “To give opportunities to children to make and learn through expressing their ideas.”

Children as young as seven can learn to become a director, camera operator, editor, animator to name a few. Cofounder Dan Farrell said: “We know there is a huge amount of talent locally – we felt it was about time we brought regular activities closer to Battersea and Dulwich.”

‘Dog walker attacker’ plea

DULWICH: The man accused of stabbing a dog walker in Dulwich Park has pleaded not guilty to three charges, including GBH.

Jermaine McDonald, 26, of no fixed abode, appeared at Inner London Crown Court on Tuesday.

He was arrested for the attack on a 31year-old man on April 27. Police and Air Ambulance were called to the park at about 1:03pm. McDonald’s further two charges were for robbery, and attempted robbery. Police have said the victim – who received a stab wound to his head – remains in a “critical condition” at a south London Hospital.

McDonald will stand trial from October 16, and the trial is expected to last five days.

NUNHEAD: The designers behind The Green community centre have picked up a prestigious architecture award.

AOC Architecture received the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award on May 22.

A STUDENT living in Bermondsey has been locked up for fifteen years after building a bomb and leaving it on a Tube train.

Damon Joseph Smith, 20, of Abbeyfield Road, Bermondsey, was sentenced to fifteen years behind bars on Friday (May 26) after being found guilty of making or possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life by a jury at the Old Bailey on May 3.

The autistic student, who originally lived in Newton Abbot, Devon, but moved to Bermondsey with his mother in May last year, had built the bomb at home with a £2 Tesco clock.

He claimed he had only intended it to give off smoke and scare people as a “prank”.

On October 20 last year, Smith, then nineteen, entered Surrey Quays Station shortly after 10.30am carrying a holdall.

He caught an Overground to Canada Water before switching to a westbound Jubilee Line train and then got off at Southwark and boarded a train in the direction he had just come from.

Smith got off the Tube train at London Bridge, leaving behind a rucksack – which had been concealed in the holdall.

There were at least ten passengers in the carriage. Only nineteen minutes had passed since he first entered Surrey Quays.

A short time later, one of the passengers saw the abandoned bag and it was reported to the driver at Canary Wharf. The driver, having noticed wires and a clock, radioed ahead.

At approximately 11am, the train and North Greenwich Underground Station were evacuated; the device was later found to have been set to go off at approximately 11:02am.

At this point, Smith casually made his way to London Metropolitan University, where he was a student.

Smith was arrested the following day by officers, assisted by armed colleagues, on Holloway Road, in north London.

He was taken to a south London police station where he was interviewed about

his actions the previous day.

During a search of his home, officers found a blank firing pistol, a BB gun, a knife and knuckleduster.

When officers examined his social media accounts they discovered that Smith had ‘liked’ a number of videos relating to explosions and had shared articles, on social media, about the current threat level.

More significantly, officers discovered a number of shredded documents.

These were carefully reconstructed by a forensic scientist and found to be pages from an online magazine that gave instructions on bomb-making.

A ‘shopping list’ of bomb materials – created on September 2, 2016 – was recovered from his iPad. Components to make an IED were also found at the house.

As a result of all of the evidence, Smith was charged on October 26, 2016.

Commander Dean Haydon, head of

the Met’s counter terrorism command, said in a statement after the sentencing: “We have seen this week the horrifying impact a bomb can have. And whilst there is no connection between Manchester and Greenwich it brings into stark reality just how devastating it could have been.

“The bomb Smith made was a viable device, but it failed to detonate, which was our good fortune.

“I would like to praise the public who informed the train driver of the abandoned bag; because of their quick

intervention we were able to make it safe and identify Smith.

“At this time of heightened security we ask everyone to remain calm but alert, to report anything that causes concern immediately; if you have suspicions about someone’s behaviour call police.”

The Danger Squad uses six characters and their sniffer dog, each with a different personality, to increase emergency understanding and awareness in a fun and

engaging way for pupils aged five to seven.

Keith Fox, the school head teacher, said: “One of the inspirations behind the development of the programme was a young boy who found a gun in his home. He didn’t know what to do – but with the help of the Danger Squad, our aim is to give children the understanding they need.”

The grade-II listed boozer in Dulwich Village, which first opened in 1890, has been closed for refurbishment since September 2014, but will reopen its doors on June 19.

At its helm will be general manager Brian Gallagher and deputy manager Jack Hayball, who both worked at The Plough in Lordship Lane.

Brian told the News: “It’s really good that things are starting and are nearly ready to go. The local population is really begging to get in and enjoy the pub again.

“The character is old school as you walk in. A lot of the furniture has 192040s style wood. Then towards the back it’s much more modern.

“The menu will have traditional dishes like guinea fowl and lamb duo. The bar will have a seasonal tap with four different beers sourced from London, and will change every three months.”

He added that there will be quiz nights further down the line, held on Sundays, and jazz nights held for the first few weeks.

With the combined space of the bar,

restaurant and garden, Brian said the pub could accommodate up to 600 people.

The Crown and Greyhound was first closed after its landlord, the Dulwich Estate, ordered the renovation of its upper floors to create a 20-room hotel.

A new addition to the building will be a heated canopy-covered outside dining area with barbecue facilities for the summer months.

When the Crown and Greyhound was opened in the late nineteenth century, it was built to replace two rival watering holes: The Crown, which dates back to the 1720s, and The Greyhound, which both faced each other on opposite sides of the old village high street.

Charles Dickens and Joseph Paxton (who designed the Crystal Palace) were both known to have stayed at the Greyhound. It was also a favourite among the original Dulwich Hamlet football club’s players, who used to make a habit of carrying their goal posts through The Crown’s grounds before matches.

LIBERAL DEMOCRAT leader Tim Farron got a lesson in baking during a visit to Bermondsey.

The party leader was in town on Tuesday (May 30) to visit Lib Dem hopeful Sir Simon Hughes, who is fighting to win back his seat in Bermondsey and Old Southwark on June 8.

Mr Farron and Sir Simon had a go at making croissants at Comptoir Gourmand – an artisanal bakery under the railway arches in Druid Street.

The pair then met a number of activists who joined them around a table for coffee and to try their baked creations.

Sir Simon lost his seat of 32 years in the north of the borough to Labour’s Neil Coyle in the 2015 general election – but has vowed to win it back in the snap election next week.

A MAN who was “five seconds from drowning” in the Thames was rescued by lifeguards last week, just as a national campaign was launched to prevent people drowning.

Volunteers from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) were called at 5am on May 25 to reports of a man battling to stay afloat in the river by Blackfriars Bridge.

The 36-year-old was spotted by the crew of a Thames Clipper crew.

Craig Burn, helm of Tower RNLI lifeboat crew, said: “His head went under and all we could see was an arm and hand as he was struggling.

“We were reaching out for him and his head came up again, and my crew grabbed his flailing arm and pulled him aboard the lifeboat.

“He was probably five seconds away from drowning. Given his temperature and the water he had ingested, if we hadn’t got him there and then, he’d have gone under.”

He added that the 36-year-old, who could not be identified, was wearing

black clothing and had black hair, which made him all the more difficult to spot in the early morning light.

He was treated on board the lifeboat for cold and water inhalation, and was taken back to the lifeboat station for London Ambulance Service paramedics and the Met Police’s Marine Unit to take over.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed he was taken to hospital, but was not treated at a major trauma centre, and blue lights were not used by the ambulance.

The rescue by chance happened on the same day the RNLI launched its ‘Respect the Water’ campaign, which aims to inform the public of how to deal with the potentially fatal effects of coldwater shock.

The RNLI recommends you should focus on floating until the effect of coldwater shock passes, so you can catch your breath and swim or call for help.

The campaign is targeted at adult men, who account for 79 per cent of drowning fatalities in the Thames over the past five years.

Neither the RNLI nor the LAS were able to confirm how the man had come to be in the water.

BERMONDSEY PLAYED host to a celebrity last week as Bob the street cat, came to visit London’s first clinic specifically designed for cats.

Bob, the eponymous star of the book and movie A Street Cat Named Bob, was at the launch of The London Cat Clinic, based in Spa Road with his owner James Bowden, 38.

Dr Jeremy Campbell, 43, who opened the clinic, is one of 20 vets in the UK to have qualified as an Advanced Practitioner in Feline Medical Care. Speaking to the News, Dr Campbell proudly said of his intention to open the clinic: “We knew we wanted to be in heart of London and the space at Spa Road gave us the unique opportunity to create a purpose built clinic from a brand new blank canvas.”

The clinic has specially designed cubbyholes for the cats. Dr Campbell explained: “Cats are solitary creatures and need to control their environment - the cubbies provide a

safe place for them to retreat to during a consultation if they are feeling anxious.”

A Street Cat Named Bob tells the story of the pet of a London busker, who gained fame for sitting on his owner’s shoulder. Bob’s owner James said there is now talk of his book being turned into an animated TV series.

IT’S ONLY two years since we were all doing this last time, but what a different place the country and the world feel now.

Brexit, of course, and the left-wing transformation of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn are set to define the story of this general election.

So what’s the story in Southwark?

In 2015, the borough turned completely red with the victory of Labour’s Neil Coyle over Liberal Democrat veteran and former minister, Simon Hughes, in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

Anyone who happens to follow their local councillors on Twitter will have seen evidence of the intense level of canvassing both Labour and Lib Dem activists (regardless of where in the borough they live) have put into this constituency. Both sides know they need to throw the kitchen sink at this seat to secure victory not to mention having to factor in a potential swing to the Tories - and we anticipate a tense night before the result is called.

The last general election also saw the departure of Labour’s former minister, Dame Tessa Jowell, from the seat of Dulwich and West Norwood.

This part of the borough is where you will find Southwark’s only two Conservative councillors. If the Tories can improve their vote share anywhere, it it likely to be in the south. The Lib Dems also hope to close the gap on Labour by capitalising on resentment towards Brexit. Herne Hill, it turns out, was one of the most

Remain-voting areas in Britain. But the bookies still favour Labour’s Helen Hayes.

Then there’s Harriet Harman in Camberwell and Peckham, Britain’s longest-serving woman MP. Harriet has twice been interim leader of the Labour Party: in the transition between Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband, and from Ed to Corbyn. There was speculation she might step down the next time a general election was called. But when May made her announcement on April 18, Harriet’s confirmation she would stand again came swiftly. Whether anyone can make a dent on her rock solid 26,000 majority remains to be seen.

And what of the smaller parties? In our last election coverage, we said: “nationally the electorate is tiring of the two party system and voters are turning to smaller parties”. Now that trend is in reverse.

UKIP claimed 12.6 per cent of the vote in 2015, but has recently averaged four or five per cent in opinion polls, and has abandoned Dulwich and West Norwood, and Camberwell and Peckham.

The Green Party earned 3.8 per cent of the national vote in 2015, and is now polling sporadically between one and four per cent. The Southwark All People’s Party are fielding no candidates.

Even in these strange times, in Southwark at least, the same big parties are looking to settle the same old scores.

NEIL COYLE is perhaps feeling a bit short-changed after having his tenure as Bermondsey and Old Southwark’s MP interrupted abruptly after two years.

The Newington ward Labour councillor fought hard in the 2015 general election to win the seat by 4,489 votes from the deep-rooted Liberal Democrat Sir Simon Hughes, who had held the position for 32 years.

And all eyes are on the north of the borough once again, as the Labour MP battles it out with his Lib Dem rival in one of the most talked-about seats of the 2017 election.

Mr Coyle may not have been as wellknown as his veteran opponent when he stood two years ago – but things are bound to have changed after his numerous television appearances, his outspoken nature in the Commons, and his open public criticism of his leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

In his short time as MP, the new father stood up against his Labour colleagues in Lewisham when the future of Millwall FC was put at risk by a compulsory purchase order, campaigned to keep the community’s under-threat pubs open, and helped Bermondsey boy Harvey Brown get treatment for his ultra-rare Morquio syndrome. And he’s far from finished.

Sat in his constituency office on Jamaica Road, Mr Coyle tells me he wants to “make a difference in a positive way in people’s lives” and to “continue [his] work on health, education and opposing Brexit” if reelected.

And, unsurprisingly, as soon as the topic of affordable housing is broached, his attention instantly turns to his LibDem rival.

“Simon Hughes sat in government and voted to cut the budget for affordable housing,” he says. “He had one chance in government and suddenly he voted to cut that budget, which could have helped get a better percentage of social housing.

Mr Coyle’s vision is for Southwark to become a “mortgage advisor”.

“Think what that would mean,” he says enthusiastically. “They could have greater responsibility to borrow at genuinely affordable rates on long-term and on the scale that would allow them to build more, but also would help reduce some of the pressure.

“If Southwark was trusted by Labour or any other government to borrow to build, they could actually be providing mortgages for those who want to buy and managing other people’s debt to build the homes we know we need.”

Although he says he isn’t “tribal” and admits Labour could have and should have done more for housing when in government.

Mr Coyle believes locals should have “first dibs” on any affordable housing built and wants to bring back key worker status for the likes of police officers and medical workers.

He wants to see every school given dedicated support for tackling knife crime and proper penalties handed out

to those convicted for knife crime.

“In a home office report published earlier this year, there was a five-year plan and not a mention of knife crime,” he says.

“We need to involve schools much better and I think it should be compulsory that all schools are involved, so no school feels stigmatised by having to have dedicated practical support.”

When asked whether taxing more and borrowing more is the solution to police cuts and school funding cuts – as Labour’s manifesto suggests – Mr Coyle says his party is offering 10,000 extra police and £4billion for schools.

“It’s absolutely crucial that we knock back that agenda [of cuts] and Labour’s investing £4billion in schools is really welcome and it would make a huge difference,” he explains.

“People have noticed [police cuts] especially locally when we had the changes to the clusters from dedicated ward officers, which has really affected police visibility and that was a mistake.

into the case of a woman living not far from his office on Jamaica Road with three disabled children – one of whom was refused transport to school by the council.

“Southwark was claiming that their policy meant she lived about 70 metres down the road from the perimeter of where they would provide transport,” he says. “It was very clear to me that this was a mistake.

“I supported the family to go to the Ombudsman and the council no surprise lost. They could’ve acted much quicker and been more flexible and saved a lot of trauma and anxiety.”

Mr Coyle vows he will stand up against his Labour colleagues in Lewisham if the council there makes any future attempts to compulsory purchase land used by Millwall Football Club to sell to a developer.

“I raised it with Lewisham and the mayor over there and their cabinet and also took it beyond that,” he says.

“Lewisham got it wrong and have actually acknowledged that, thankfully, and they’ve also said after pressure that they will now involve fully the club in any further plan - so I hope that the outcome is that the club’s future is safe where they are.”

Mr Coyle says a vote for him is a vote for his “brand of Labour” in this election – not the Labour party.

It doesn’t quite echo what he said the year he was elected, when he told the

News he thought the electorate was “voting based on how people perceive the values of political parties”.

But after denying he ever said a vote for him was a vote for Labour, the Bermondsey and Old Southwark candidate simply says it will be his name on the ballot paper on June 8.

And despite his open criticism of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, he is adamant he doesn’t want to be the next party leader, or indeed prime minister, one day.

When asked what he has been doing on the doorstep to convince people to vote for him even if they don’t want Corbyn as leader, he remarks: “voters are not stupid”.

“With all due respect, Labour and the Lib Dems have held this seat for yonks but there aren’t many people I know believe that Tim Farron is going to be prime minister and the polls suggest that nor will Jeremy Corbyn - so a vote for me is a vote for Neil Coyle, here, Labour,” he says.

“Voters are not stupid and they do recognise the state of national politics, so they do have a bit more confidence certainly that in choosing me they are choosing Neil Coyle and my brand of Labour.”

We’ll have to wait until June 9 to find out whether Neil Coyle has done enough in his two short years as MP to convince voters he is the best person for the job.

HAVING SPENT two years watching from the sidelines as a Labour candidate represented his old constituency of 32 years, Simon Hughes vows he is "absolutely ready" to win the seat back.

The Liberal Democrat, who turned 66 in May, admits he doesn't know how many more years he will spend in politics, but is clear that he is fighting one election at a time.

"There are some informal suggestions I think coming from Labour that the Lib Dem candidate is too old – I regard that as offensive and I think the community would regard it as offensive," he says. "I absolutely, definitely have it in me."

He chooses to conduct the interview seated on a bench in the middle of the Blue in Bermondsey, with a constant flower of passers-by stopping to great him. It is impossible not to notice the Southwark Lib Dem headquarters directly opposite on Southwark Park Road, which sprung up after the Prime Minister announced a snap election on April 18, with the party's bright orange placards plastered across each window pane.

"I’m absolutely ready and up for it and fit and well," he repeats, before rattling off a list of commitments he has kept up during the two years since the 2015 general election, including being chair of London Bubble Theatre, and independent director of the London Football Association.

"I think last time we lost for the first time since I stood for reasons I think everybody knows, which were to do with a view that an MP [in coalition] with the Conservatives isn’t what people expected," he says, recalling his five-year stint in Parliament when the Lib Dems were junior government partners to the Tories and voted on controversial issues such as the bedroom tax and tripling university tuition fees.

"I think a lot of people regretted that decision and thought they’d given us a

bit of a kicking, but kicked us too hard," he adds.

He admits that the tripling of the tuition fees was a "real issue" and says he regrets that they went up during the coalition government – but is just as quick to move the spotlight off him, and back on to Labour.

"When Labour were in office they said they would never introduce them in a manifesto and then introduced them," he says. "In the following manifesto they said they wouldn’t increase them, and then increased them.

"Our policy in the 2010 election, which I voted for, was to get rid of tuition fees over six years. The Tories wanted unlimited fees.

“Labour had quite cleverly ducked the question – had they been in government they would’ve faced the exact same question.

"A big difference is that the Labour candidate is trying to fight the last election again and saying ‘look at all those horrible things that Simon Hughes had to be a part of when he was in government’. I’m fighting the next election."

When pushed on the topic of the bedroom tax, and the fact he voted for it, he is ready with his response.

“I had to support the package, not

willingly, and not happily,” he says.

“In the end I spoke to say that what I wanted was that we should only require people to pay to have a reduction in benefit for their spare room if they were offered a similar property and turned it down.”

He continues his focus on Neil Coyle, the Newington ward Labour councillor who unseated Sir Simon in 2015 and who has been publicly critical of his own party leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

"In the last two years, whatever the MP may have been doing in Parliament, he also spent a lot of time on internal party battles, which he wasn’t elected to do, and he spent a huge amount of time having nominated Jeremy Corbyn, then being publicly critical of him, which I think is very dishonourable," says Sir Simon.

The veteran politician says he is willing to take on the council and the government if elected as MP. "In Southwark, effectively we are a one-party state," he says. "A Labour council, member of London Assembly, mayor, and three MPs. "My question back to the Labour candidate is ‘how many times in that time have you been publicly critical of them?' I am willing to take on the

council and the government.

"If we win, then watch out Southwark Labour council group because we’re after you and we intend to drive you from office and take over and run a radical people-centred, not developer-centred, borough council from May next year."

Sir Simon says one of his priorities for Bermondsey and Old Southwark is to ensure that everyone from eighteen upwards has opportunities for education, training, skills, and apprenticeships – and wants to effectively become a “political support and guidance system” to help people.

He also wants to launch a week-long event in the summer which brings together the schools, businesses, and community and faith groups in the area, and which links Rotherhithe Music Festival with Bermondsey Carnival to bring trade and people to the area.

The Lib Dem grandee wants to bring back the 24-hour emergency clinic at the Maudsley, a psychiatric hospital in Camberwell, to give people a "safe place to go" when they are feeling depressed or suicidal.

He wants to bring back affordable accommodation for key workers, vows to challenge every planning application that doesn't have 50 per

cent affordable housing if elected, and says the council should have the right to decide whether to have the right-tobuy scheme in Southwark.

Sir Simon also believes he is the best candidate to take Bermondsey and Old Southwark forward during the Brexit negotiations.

"These are going to be really hairy days ahead for this country," he says.

"I have the experience of having been in government challenging the Tories and challenging Labour and if the Tories are going to be in government, I know the people and the ministers in charge.

“I know David Davis, the current Brexit minister, really well, so if it requires someone to go and knock on his door if he’s still doing that job then I think he’s more likely to listen to me than he would be to a Labour MP.” "The Prime Minister is saying 'what we’re going to offer you is a deal or no deal' - well that’s bananas,” he adds.

“We [the Lib Dems] are saying that people must have a choice between the deal, no deal if you want it, and the current position."

Sir Simon admits that he believes the Tories will win the election – but if elected on June 8, he vows to be a "top quality community MP" for Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

NESTLED INTO the corner of a busy Borough coffee shop not far from the charity she works for, Siobhan Baillie insists she hasn't been "parachuted in" to fight the Tory battle in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

The 35-year-old, who lives in Hampstead and was elected as a Conservative councillor for Camden in 2014, admits she "came into politics quite late" and isn't a "typical Tory".

"I never saw Margaret Thatcher in my toast aged eight or had any amazing calling," she quips. "I got involved locally doing campaigns for the Conservatives leafleting and just became so interested.

"I come from north Yorkshire and I’m a free school meal kid with divorced parents, so I’m probably not necessarily a typical Tory – a lot of people have said that to me."

Despite living and working as a councillor on the other side of the river, Ms Baillie is adamant she is the best person to take on Labour's Neil Coyle and Liberal Democrat Sir Simon Hughes in the battle for the Bermondsey and Old Southwark seat.

"I work in the constituency, it’s not like I’ve just been parachuted in, and I’ve got all the skills able to help everybody in Southwark," she argues.

"Camden's not a dissimilar council, it’s got a makeup of heavy Labour administration and a number of similar issues.

"People across London are facing issues about housing and transport and they want to get on in life and want somebody who is ambitious for their aspiration and you have to remember that my entire existence and professional career has been based on people and helping people."

As someone who didn't go to university but instead worked her way up to qualify as a solicitor through night school and weekends at law school, it's evident this new kid on the block doesn't shy away from hard

graft – but does she have what it takes to win a seat dominated by Labour and the Liberal Democrats?

"I want to remind you that the Greater London Authority candidate here [Lambeth and Southwark] Robert Flint had the biggest swing to the Conservatives last year," she fires back.

"There is progress for the Conservatives, people are fed up with the Lib Dem and Labour show and when I doorstep people they’re pleased to see the Conservatives and they like Theresa May and she’s got faith in me representing this seat."

Marketing herself as the "fresh set of eyes", Ms Baillie says she will "bear down" on housing issues, tackle knife crime, stand up for Southwark schools, and get the best deal for the country in the Brexit negotiations.

"The Conservative government and Theresa May have created firm policy

backed up by the ability to have a strong economy that will create a whole new generation of social housing," she says.

"We will make sure that people have the aspiration to move on and move up in life and the more I look at this the more things need to change here."

The school governor also indicates she isn't afraid to stand up against her own leadership if Southwark schools face having their funding slashed.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark was expected to be worst-hit by the National Funding Formula which aims to end the 'post code lottery' and distribute funding equally across schools in the country.

But in their manifesto, the Conservatives have indicated a change of tune, promising no school will have its funding cut as a result of the new formula.

Baillie said: "We obviously have to get through this election but I am confident that there will be changes to either the formula or the funding so there will be a better position for London schools.

“And, if there isn’t, I will be at the front of the queue banging the drum to make sure."

She wants to see more outreach in the community to tackle knife crime, as well as police officers backed up with funding and effective laws.

"The Conservatives have worked really hard to protect police funding," she says. "They also created a law where an adult found carrying a knife for a second time can be sentenced to six months in prison – so a very strong useful law for the police to use – and there’s a lesser sentence for youths."

Despite voting to remain in the European Union – like her leader Theresa May – Ms Baillie says it is time to move forward with the negotiations and that only a Tory MP can help to get the job done.

"I think it [the fact she voted remain] means I’ve got empathy for remainers," she says.

"Theresa May voted remain but we are practical people who know that to get the best deal is to not spend time being over emotional and throwing insults around, it’s actually just to think about all the different issues and how we can move forward.

"I am able to do this because I’ll be

able to say it’s tough, I’m sorry you don’t like it but now we need to do the hard work and get stuff done."

On the topic of Simon Hughes calling Theresa May "irresponsible" for saying she was willing to walk away from the negotiations without a deal, she says: "I’m a divorce lawyer by trade, and if this is being billed as the biggest divorce, and it’s a country divorce, you don’t start a negotiation by giving your softest position, you have to start by showing that you are willing to walk away if you can’t get the best deal for the country."

Despite being up against a Lib Dem candidate who represented Bermondsey and Old Southwark for 32 years under various titles – as well as spending five of those in power with the coalition government – and a Labour candidate who is far from finished after having his tenure cut short at just two years, Ms Baillie remains optimistic.

"I think it’s right for a change," she says. "The people of Bermondsey and Old Southwark should not be given two people who are not ambitious themselves, and whose parties are not ambitious, because they can’t be ambitious for the people, whereas I’m ambitious for every single person here.

"We’ve got a proper plan for the country and for London that is backed up by the costings and by a strong and stable leader whereas the others are just paying lip service."

I JOIN Harriet Harman with a group of party activists offering campaign leaflets to mums on the school run at Harris Primary Academy Peckham Park.

Harriet says that just the other day she spoke to a local head teacher who “spent eleven hours trying to work out how they were going to make their budget work, because of the Tory education cuts. But they just couldn’t.”

One mum pops over and tells Harriet she’s a nurse at Lewisham Hospital, and is worried about staff shortages.

About half of them recognise her, and those who do enthusiastically say they’ll vote Labour. But that’s probably not surprising for someone who’s been in business as Camberwell and Peckham’s MP for 34 years.

So what is her message for the people who don’t know her, or are undecided? Is the emphasis on getting her back as their MP, or is it on putting Jeremy Corbyn in 10 Downing Street?

“It’s about your sense of what is your best leading edge,” Harriet says.

“In 1997 Tony Blair was way ahead of the popularity of the party, and way ahead of me. People would come in and go ‘how do I vote for Tony?’ It varies from election to election.

“I think [local people] think they’re voting for Labour, and voting for me.

They’ve got a long-standing loyalty to the party, which is not necessarily affected by who is the leader.”

As it’s brand Labour and brand Harriet, the constituency MP, that she’s pushing, I try to get a sense of her feelings on Southwark’s Council’s ever-topical drive for regeneration.

 Raise pay and tackle zero-hour contract abuse and its proposals to demolish the Peckhamplex and multi-storey car park, and build homes on Choumert Grove car park and on Peckham Square by pulling down Peckham Arch. “No” is the answer.

She said: “I tend to think it’s the responsibility of the council, as they’ve got their elected representatives to be responsible for that. Sometimes I think the idea of the MP being the alternative planning authority is not particularly good.

“I know there’s a lot of complaints about the Peckham Arch and the Square. But I remember people complaining when the arch was set up.”

Bearing in mind these are some of the most high-profile issues in the local area, I suggest her attitude might seem rather carefree?

“It’s not carefree, it’s constitutional,” she says. “If I thought the councillors weren’t caring, I would get involved. Sometimes if there’s a conflict I’ll try and resolve it. But I don’t try and second guess the council’s planning decisions.”

By far the most controversial and long-running story in her constituency has been redevelopment of the Aylesbury Estate.

Harriet says she disagreed with the secretary of state’s decision last

September: that eight leaseholders in Phase One of the regeneration scheme would have had their human rights “contravened” by the council’s attempted compulsory purchase order (CPO) of their homes (for as little as £180,000).

She calls it the “perilous” outcome of what happens when people use Right to Buy on big estates.

She “sympathises” with the affected leaseholders, but says the council “can’t pay above market value, and the market value is affected by the fact that it’s going to be redeveloped.

“People can claim human rights, that doesn’t mean it’s a human right violation. I just think it’s a very difficult situation for those individuals. I think the council needs to press on with the legal processes and try and find a solution so it’s not held up.”

Whether that “solution” is for the council to continue its game of chicken with the government, or offer a more generous deal to the leaseholders, Harriet doesn’t say.

Sticking with housing, I ask if the Tory’s new pledge to build 100,000 council homes per year is an attempt to shoot Labour’s fox effectively by mimicking them.

“I don’t believe they’ll do it. There’s not a cat’s chance in hell,” Harriet

They’ve got a long-standing loyalty to the party, which is not necessarily affected by who is the leader.” counters. “There’s a reality, which is that more people could have access to affordable housing, council houses are kept in better condition, and it’s with a Labour government. It’s the opposite with a Tory government, and that’s the way it’s always been…

It’s a false promise.”

Away from the constituency, and towards Europe. Labour’s manifesto says not securing a trade deal with the EU after leaving the Single Market would be “unviable”.

The Conservatives say “no deal is better than a bad deal”, while Labour says the opposite.

But does Labour’s stance imply Britain needs the EU more than it needs us, and does that put Britain in a weakened bargaining position?

Might that expose us to the more extreme suggestions already made by EU chief negotiator Michael Barnier, that Britain could be handed a £100bn leaving fee?

She says without a trade deal “we would be the biggest loser” – more or less agreeing that we do need the EU more.

“The reality is we’re a much smaller unit to form trade agreements with, than when we are part of the EU. It’s an ongoing experiment. And the people who will be hit hardest are the people at the bottom, like people who live here, not people at the very top like Boris Johnson.”

She brushes aside any suggestion the proposed £100bn leaving fee might be unreasonable. “If we’ve got ongoing liabilities that we’ve gone into, we’ve got to buy out of them.

We can’t just walk away.

“We always said if we left the EU there would be a bill to pay. And the Leavers all said ‘no we’ll have £300m for the NHS, and that was wrong’.”

At the time of this interview, we’re 23 days from the morning that the election result will be called. She insists she won’t “speculate” on what the fallout might be if Labour were to suffer a heavy defeat, and is adamant her focus is on “campaigning to win”.

Nonetheless, Harriet has a precise answer for whether Corbyn should stay or go if Labour suffers another defeat. “I do take the view that leaders have to take responsibility… because the buck stops with you, and you can’t blame anybody else. It’s no good seeking alibis when things don’t go right. Ultimately, the leader can claim success, and when there’s a failure the leader has to own that failure.”

And what would “taking responsibility” mean in any practical sense for Corbyn?

She gives three examples of Labour leaders (Neil Kinnock in ’92, Michael Foot in ‘83, and Gordon Brown in 2010) - who took failure on the chin and resigned.

MICHAEL BUKOLA has a steep hill to climb if he wants to become Camberwell and Peckham’s first ever Liberal Democrat MP.

Since the EU referendum, the Lib Dems have nailed their colours to the mast as the most pro-EU party.

They have beaten the drum most boisterously for a second referendum, and scorned Theresa May’s promise of a “hard Brexit”.

It’s on this anti-Brexit ticket that Michael’s party hopes to recover from the near wipe-out suffered in 2015, and capitalise on the divides Brexit caused among Tory and Labour voters.

So, by their own reasoning, winning seats in liberal, cosmopolitan Southwark – where people voted overwhelmingly for remain – should be doable.

Michael, a practising nurse, is “absolutely” trying to pitch himself as a constituency MP, and says this will be “a constituency election”.

“I would put forward my own track record locally [as a former South Bermondsey councillor], and in campaigning and being a community activist.”

He’s quick to get in a point that he lives in the constituency, while his long-standing Labour rival Harriet Harman lives just across the constituency boundary in Dulwich.

Then he accuses Harriet of being “ambivalent” on whether Corbyn should be Labour leader, and says people will “make a statement” on her vote to trigger Article 50.

I ask Michael how the Lib Dems could have any power over the EU negotiations, given it would be optimistic to predict them having 20 MPs after June 8. What would the process be for preventing a hard Brexit?

“I think the process would be collaboration with other MPs from other parties to build a case where

But how far will collaborating with other parties get them, given all signs point to May winning comfortably, with a wall of Tory MPs backing her for the next five years?

Michael says “we don’t know what the outcome of the election will be” and says “we have come up short” when trying to predict previous elections. That’s true, but not for twenty years has one party dominated in the opinions polls like the Tories are now. And for there to ever be a challenge in Parliament to Theresa May’s hard Brexit, the “collaboration” Michael speaks of would need to include tens of Tory MPs too.

Then comes a point in the interview when Michael seems unsure how the Brexit process works. He suggests there is already going to be a second vote in Parliament on the Brexit deal (even though the Lib Dems and Labour criticised Theresa May for refusing to allow it).

I put it to Michael again that even

if another vote on Brexit were to happen in Parliament, it would still be passed by a whopping majority of Tories, and that this really calls into question how voting Lib Dem would make a difference to Brexit.

Michael insists we “can’t predict” the election result.

Leaving Brexit to one side, I try to get a sense of how Michael thinks his party’s manifesto pledges will go down in this constituency, where he needs to convert thousands of Labour voters.

The Lib Dems’ pledge to increase annual NHS funding by £6.5bn (by dedicating one per cent of income tax) is a smaller offering than Labour’s £7.4bn. And both parties have said they will unfreeze pay rises for public sector workers. So why vote Lib Dem over Labour?

Michael says his party’s idea is “more honest” and “more credible”.

On housing, the Lib Dems are offering to build fewer homes than Labour. But Michael says his party’s pledge to build 300,000 homes by 2022 is “more credible and more realistic” than Labour’s pledge to build 100,000 per year.

“I think the process would be collaboration with other MPs from other parties to build a case where we could construct an amendment in Parliament that would let us vote on the final [Brexit] deal.” overlap on promises to raise corporation tax to 2010 levels and clamp down on tax avoidance; increase welfare spending; and scrap the bedroom tax (brought in under the coalition government).

The pattern emerges that both parties will put more money into the public sector, albeit the Lib Dems a bit less.

“The Tories have lost economic credibility” he says, for failing in their mission to eliminate the state’s spending deficit, while Labour “have returned to their old selves in relying too much on borrowing, and moving us further into debt”.

“In that circumstance,” he says, “there is only one credible alternative, and that’s us, in terms of demonstrating a credible record on the economy.”

He also raises the party’s “radical” policy on legalising and regulating cannabis – a “prevalent issue in the borough” as something that really distinguishes the Lib Dems from the other parties. “[This policy] will attract a lot of people who particularly are suffering from what I consider to be a really difficult situation affecting our young people.

“I think legalising it will undercut the illegal market, and encourage

young people who are selling this stuff to look to other careers and ways of making money, to develop themselves and pursue other avenues.”

As so much attention has been paid to Jeremy Corbyn’s personality, I ask Michael to comment on Lib Dem leader Tim Farron’s previously espoused views (in a Salvation Army publication in 2007) that abortion was “wrong at any time” and needed “tighter restrictions”.

Michael counters: “Tim has said he is pro-choice, and the view he possibly had ten years ago probably isn’t the views he has now. I guess it’s as credible as Jeremy Corbyn, and the views [in favour] that he supposedly had of the IRA. During this election campaign, Tim Farron, has also been forced to deny believing that gay sex is “a sin”.

Michael said: “I think on that issue… it would have been more helpful for Tim to have been clearer on that. But from his point of view I think he’s very aware that we’re progay rights, and his voting record has reflected that.

“I think he’s been a breath of fresh air, and that he has something genuine to offer. It’s a bit scurrilous of the media to harp on about issues he may have had long ago.”

PECKHAM HAS been a Labour stronghold for 81 years. And since it was renamed Camberwell and Peckham in 1997, its current MP Harriet Harman has never had a majority less than 13,000 votes.

Whenever a party finds a candidate who has put their hand up to fight for a seat where they know their chances are next to nothing, you have to think “rather them than me”.

Step forth Ben Spencer, from Beckenham. Ben is a psychiatry registrar – one of many medical positions which falls under the broad term ‘junior doctor’ – who works between King’s College Hospital and Maudsley Hospital. Though Ben’s not quite local, he lived in the area between 2009 and 2012.

Warming up to the interview, he explains why having a strong economy, and therefore managing Brexit, will underpin everything.

“It’s one of the reasons I am in politics actually,” he says. “When the economy takes a downturn, people’s mental health takes a downturn, and people livelihoods take a downturn…

“The economy is most important because everything flows from that: that’s jobs and that’s money for services.”

Firstly I put it to Ben that the Brexit negotiations look like they’ve got off on the wrong foot under his party’s watch, with some tit for tat and butting of heads. Theresa May has suggested we could withdraw from providing security intelligence to the EU. Their response was dangling a £100bn leaving fee before our eyes.

He says: “We’ve got too long ahistory together, and there’s too many deep-seated interests. Once we get down to the serious negotiating, I think things will start looking quite different.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s going to be a really hard negotiation, because both sides want the best for

One point on Brexit where Labour and the Tories differ is whether we can say (either honestly or not) that leaving without a new trade deal with the EU would ever be worse than a bad deal.

But I ask Ben, could he envisage a “bad deal” ever being worse than the risks May is putting us under if we jeopardise our trade with the EU (to whom we sell about 45 per cent of all our exports)?.

He’s not quite got a direct answer, and somewhat avoids doing so, by denying that it would ever come to that ultimatum.

“We all need each other in a global economy. I can’t see that it’s going to become embittered. I don’t think it will turn out that way,” he says.

Anyway, “enough of Brexit”, I say

to Ben, but what about his party’s education policy? In 2015 the Conservatives promised to protect per pupil spending for the next five years.

Now though, education spending is forecast to fall real terms (because not enough extra money is being put in to deal with inflation, and rising pupil numbers).

Schools in Southwark will be hit by a double whammy of losing huge amounts of money under the government’s proposed new funding formula, designed to give underfunded rural schools a bigger share, at the expense of city-based schools.

Research from six trade unions, including the NUT, Unions and Unite, found that Camberwell and Peckham schools could lose £1,006 per pupil.

He says “across the country, it’s the right thing to do”, and that £4bn is going to be invested into education to “make sure no school’s budget is affected”.

Yet there’s no suggestion that £4bn

But Ben’s keen to link this back to the economy also (clearly where he thinks the Tories have the upper hand over Labour) and says any sustained funding will depend on continued GDP growth and a good Brexit deal.

Another treasured public service on which I query the Tories’ past manifesto pledges is of course the NHS – one that must be close to Ben’s heart.

Their 2010 manifesto promised “no top-down reform” of the NHS, which they then did in dramatic, uncompromising fashion. And in 2015 they promised the NHS an extra £8bn over five years - a pledge renewed this time around, but without the funding identified - so why should voters trust Ben’s party on the NHS? He says his party has “a strong track record on the NHS” and explains the Conservatives’ “vision” for the service.

Community pharmacies, he says, could take over from GPs “in a lot of areas” on issues such as “long-term illness management” “community outreach” and “prevention” in terms of weight-loss and prevention of diabetes, helped by the fact that pharmacists are often more wellknown in their communities.

But Google the phrase “Conservative plans for community

pharmacies” and the third hit is a story from the Mirror, which quotes a Labour MP’s claim that £208m will be cut from pharmacies in England this year.

One area of improvement that recent weeks have shown the NHS desperately needs is with IT. Ben says the Tories have “committed” to an “IT revolution” with improved cyber security. He bats off my point that his party scrapped an NHS IT upgrade in 2013 (wasting over £6bn in the process).

“I can think of many times when it would’ve been much easier for me to have been able to access someone’s medical records to make decisions,” he says.

“I agree there are lots of issues about it, one is in terms of public confidence, another is in terms of adequate protections. But we have to had an aspiration in terms of modernization of our NHS to make it work efficiently” But says he “can’t speak more specifically” and “doesn’t want to speculate” on what the approach would be.

I ask Ben: surely it’s up to a government in waiting not to just speculate, but tell voters what their plans are and how much they will cost, before a general election?

He withdraws to saying “I hope these are things [a Tory government] will go forward and think about”.

But don’t we all hope that?

IT’S BEEN an intense two years since Labour’s Helen Hayes was elected to fill the boots of Dame Tessa Jowell, and represent a constituency with Dulwich at one end, and Brixton at the other.

Not unlike her more outspoken colleague in the north of the borough, we know Helen didn’t vote for Jeremy Corbyn in either of the Labour Party’s leadership elections.

And that she went against Corbyn in a vote-of-no-confidence after the EU referendum.

In January’s vote in Parliament to trigger Article 50, Helen defied the Labour leadership’s orders, and voted against. A resolute remainer, Helen said she could not vote for Brexit unless there was a second referendum on the terms of Britain’s negotiation strategy, or if a general election was called.

Be careful what you wish for, some might say. But then look at her mighty 16,000 majority from the 2015 general election, and you could assume she’ll be safe.

I start by asking: is she emphasising to people that a vote for Labour here is a vote for Jeremy Corbyn?

“A vote for Labour is a vote for a Labour government,” she says. “I’m absolutely certain that a Labour government, led by Jeremy Corbyn, would be 100 times better for residents in Dulwich and West Norwood than a Conservative government led by Theresa May.” That doesn’t explicitly answer the question, of whether she has been mentioning Corbyn’s name to residents, upon whose doors she’s knocked. And it’s quite unmissable that her leaflets are devoid of Corbyn’s name.

But how does she reconcile that Labour’s manifesto promises to deliver Brexit, without the second referendum she called for?

“There isn’t a single one of the main political parties which is offering not to implement Brexit,” Helen says.

Tackle air pollution and put climate  change back at the top of the political agenda referendum... but I think it would be a very dangerous thing indeed to ignore that national vote.

“But I believe a Brexit negotiation led by the Labour party would be a profoundly different thing to a negotiation led by Theresa May. The main reason being that a negotiation led by us would have Labour values at the centre of it. It would seek to secure the values of fairness, diversity and internationalism, and be a more Europe-facing Brexit.”

Labour and the Lib Dems have been dining out on difficulties Theresa May has faced whilst dealing with EU leaders – take the suggestion of a £100bn leaving fee, for example.

But why assume a Labour negotiation, led by Jeremy Corbyn, would be such an amicable affair?

Especially when many suspect the EU wants to make an example of us.

“All negotiations are based on relationships,” Helen says, before accusing Theresa May of being “arrogant” in her approach, which was “bound to illicit a fractious response” from EU leaders.

I put to her a criticism that many Brexiteers have levelled at Labour, that her party’s suggestion, “no deal

would be worse than a bad deal” actually weakens Britain’s negotiating position, because it implies we need the EU more than the EU needs us.

“I wouldn’t quite say we need the EU more, but there is a relationship of dependency there,” Helen says, because the alternative would be to “fall back on World Trade Organisation rules,” (which would make our trade with the EU more costly, and affect our economy).

She’s not denying the EU has taken a combative approach, but says its behaviour, including the £100bn leaving fee “was a consequence” of the Tories’ handling of the negotiation.

Over to a more immediate problem on Helen’s doorstep: reported knifecrime cases are going up, with conviction rates going down. The News has reported on Helen’s opposition to the government’s decision to close Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court, and she’s as quick as anyone to point to reduced numbers of police officers as part of the problem.

“I think in a constituency where we have some children able to access the best possible set of facilities, while other children from the same community are not able to fill their potential because they are going hungry, this is a situation that nobody should sit comfortably with” with “worrying rises in some of the most violent offences, including gun and knife crime”.

Spread around the country, that’s maybe 1,000 more officers for London. Split 1,000 between 32 London boroughs, and Southwark might be lucky to get 30 more bobbies on the beat. So is there anything more that Labour can offer?

Helen said: “I wouldn’t expect those 10,000 police to be completely evenly distributed around the country, so I would expect the Met to get a good chunk of those resources, and I would certainly expect Southwark and Lambeth, as the most intensive boroughs to police anywhere in London, to get a decent number of those officers, and that’s certainly what I would be arguing for.”

She adds: “We need an urgent response to knife crime, it must be a multifaceted response that’s about policing and wider services as well,” pointing to “cuts in funding” for community-led projects as another part of the problem.

One local issue Helen’s been especially vocal about was campaigning against education cuts, and the government’s plans for a new “national funding formula”. But Labour’s education policy – to introduce VAT to private school fees – could equally worry parents who

send their kids to this area’s three private schools.

The VAT, Labour says, would fund free schools meal for primary school pupils, something which is already available at schools run by Southwark Council. So why would parents at Dulwich College, Alleyn’s School, or James Allen's Girls' School, vote for that?

Helen points to the obvious benefits of those free school meals “helping children learn because they’re properly fed... building social cohesion by teaching kids to eat together”. But she says it will be up to those private schools to “decide to what extent they take a hit and readjust their fees... and whether they let that burden fall on parents”.

When I put to her a widely-made criticism, that VAT (a 20 per cent rise in fees) will push more parents to send their kids to already underresourced state schools, Helen calls the policy “a relatively small intervention in the fees structure” that private schools “will have to adjust” to.

She adds: “I think in a constituency where we have some children able to access the best possible set of facilities, while other children from the same community are not able to fill their potential because they are going hungry, this is a situation that nobody should sit comfortably with.”

ONE OF the big talking points of the 2015 election was the rise of the alternative parties. The SNP swallowed Scotland whole, and though UKIP and the Greens couldn’t secure more seats, between them they wrangled five million votes.

Fast forward to 2017, and (in England at least) it’s more like old times, with Labour and the Tories dominating the conversation.

So to bust their way back in on the conversation in Dulwich and West Norwood, the Liberal Democrats have selected Gail Kent, who works for Facebook as the company’s lead on global security policy, having worked for seventeen years at the National Crime Agency.

Gail says her party is again placing itself in the centre ground whilst steadfastly speaking up for those who voted remain last June – which ought to go down well in this constituency, one of the most remain-friendly places in Britain.

But voters could be forgiven for wondering: how much of a difference will it make to the issues of the day, if the Lib Dems end up with five or ten more MPs? “The more Lib Dems you’ve got, the stronger an opposition you’ve got,” Gail says. “We’re in no doubt whatsoever that Labour has been no opposition to the Tories. They can’t make up their minds on so many issues, like do they want Corbyn or not, and their position on Brexit.

The Lib Dems have been much clearer on a number of issues.”

But how will a dozen more Lib Dem MPs be able to change what happens to Brexit?

Gail says her party will do two things: argue against the government using debates and questions and persuading MPs from Labour and the Scottish National Party “to vote with us”. The second

is “standing, jumping up and down, and shouting [for] people that voted for remain. The more MPs we’ve got the more coverage we’ll get and the louder we can be.”

You would hope that her first point “debating” would be taken as granted. But she adds: “It’s not about stopping Brexit, it’s about questioning the Tory party at every single point, on every level, from the economy to schools, and making it really clear that they can’t get away with them.”

But while Theresa May is on course to at least keep her majority, and quite possible double or triple it, I put it to Gail that it sounds like the Lib Dems are saying “vote for us and hopefully we can get Tory MPs to change their minds and occasionally rebel against Theresa May in Parliament”. Or that they are asking people to vote for them as a protest vote for staying in the EU, similar to how a vote for UKIP was once a protest for leaving the EU. Rather more optimistically, Gail replies “it’s about having a conversation” and “working with the SNP, with Labour, and even the prime minister herself”.

She suggests people won’t just look at them as a protest vote, and will respect the Lib Dems for going into coalition with the Tories, when they had to make “very serious

decisions” after the financial crisis.

And she adds that people are “wanting to know, what does a centrist party look like?”

“The Labour Party are looking back to the 1970s with Jeremy Corbyn.

“Theresa May is looking back to the 1950s where we all little England and waving flags and have kids going to grammar schools.

“People are looking for a party that’s reflecting the future and where we will be nationally and internationally; that’s positive, diverse and outward looking.”

While Gail happily defines the Lib Dems in this election as the centrist party, I’m not quite sure what policies her party has to offer that are uniquely Lib Dem, and will help them stand out between Labour and the Tories. Because the last time her party tried to “anchor themselves” between Labour the Tories (to borrow a phrase from Nick Clegg) it was a bloodbath.

The first thing that springs to mind is her party’s pledge to regulate cannabis.

“I worked for the National Crime Agency, and looked a lot at organised crime,” she says. “What you would often find is that cannabis is the seed commodity that starts someone’s career in organised crime.”

“It’s not about stopping Brexit, it’s about questioning the Tory party at every single point, on every level, from the economy to schools, and making it really clear that they can’t get away with them.”

She adds that a regulated cannabis market would add £1bn to the economy, and is needed to stop people using the more powerful strains of cannabis, i.e. skunk. And she compares UK drug policy to that of Portugal and America, where there is a more “mature” attitude towards researching its medicinal uses.

Gail says that education is another area where her party differs from Labour and Tories.

“We have always prioritised earlyyears, because it’s so important to understand that a child’s development starts the moment they’re born.

“If you’re four years old and a black boy, then you’re already being stereotyped as more aggressive. If you’re a seven-year-old girl you’re already being fed messages about what you can and cannot do in life.

Generally your outlook in life starts at that age. That’s why we have to prioritise early-years education.

“It’s not just about stopping the cuts and scrapping free school lunches [both widely expected to happen under the Conservatives].

It’s also about increasing the pupil premium – something we did in coalition.”

She adds: “With the Conservatives you’re seeing slash and burn. With Labour you have more of an emphasis on university fees”.

Though I imagine a Labour supporter would jump on that comment with their pledge to offer free school meals to primary schools nationally.

On health and social care, Gail boasts that her party helped push mental health higher up the national agenda. And rather than offer a solution for fixing the NHS, her party suggests taking its future out of politicians’ hands and “having a review” involving all stake holder groups, patients, academics and experts, and working out what the country’s view should be, while “acknowledging we’re in completely different times, with an older population”.

It’s not as radical as pledges to nationalise the railway lines and cap executives’ salary. Nor is it rushing off with the Tories’ never ending quest to “eliminate the deficit”.

Perhaps not for the first time in the Lib Dems’ history, success may depend on how much people want to give the two major parties the middle finger, and pick the underdogs.

DESPITE LABOUR closing the gap on the Conservatives in the polls as the election draws ever-closer, Rachel Wolf insists that the only poll that counts will be on June 8.

The 31-year-old Tory is standing in Dulwich and West Norwood against Helen Hayes – a Labour MP who had a majority of 16,000 in the last election just two years ago.

With figures like those, it’s difficult to imagine this seat even as a two-horse race, and when asked what her ultimate goal is in standing in the constituency and whether she stands any chance of winning, Ms Wolf isn’t giving much away.

“I think it's always a bad idea to take any vote for granted so I would never say I can win or lose, my aim is to make people aware that the Conservatives are making the most credible and stable government,” she says.

Ms Wolf admits she hadn’t anticipated becoming an election candidate since she and her husband are awaiting the arrival of their second child.

But as someone who was born in King’s College Hospital and grew up in Dulwich, she says she understands the issues of the area, such as the high rates of burglaries, young people attempting to get on the housing ladder, and the need for quality education.

“I spent most of my career trying to improve the quality of education across the country and helping people set up schools,” says the Conservative, who founded the New Schools Network at the age of 24 – a charity set up to lobby for more free schools to be opened.

“I ran a division of an education technology company in New York for a few years and when I came back, after having my first child, I worked in Number 10 as an education advisor and realised that I really wanted to dedicate my life to trying to make both education and people's lives in general better.

She says she understands the difficulties her generation faces when it comes to buying their first house and wants to tackle this if elected.

“This is something my entire generation has faced as an issue and for my own children I think it's absolutely essential to have housing be affordable without having to rely on whether you have wealthy parents,” she says.

She says she would also work to tackle the root cause of knife crime if elected and work closely with the police.

“We know some of the cases of knife crime and the problems of deprivation leading to knife crime and one thing I was heavily involved in was alternative education providers and working with children who were so disengaged by the school system that they were at massive risk - so I would work with those charities and try to tackle the root cause,” she says.

And she adds that although crime levels have gone down overall nationally, there

are still some “real issues” with burglaries and thefts in Dulwich and West Norwood.

When asked whether Theresa May’s Uturn on the so-called “dementia tax” outlined in the Conservative manifesto represented a “strong and stable” government, she defends her party leader.

The prime minister watered down the proposal after facing criticism over the controversial social care shake-up – which proposes to make elderly people pay for care in their own home unless they have less than £100,000 in assets – as it would force pensioners to use up the value of their residential property for the first time.

“We do need to make tough decisions for people to afford things,” Ms Wolf says.

“It's a pretence to say you can pay for all this by taxing people but we need to make it clear to people that they are not going to lose their homes – it's actually giving people more protection and I think it's a responsible and deliverable plan.

“I think what she [Theresa May] said was that what she was responding to were claims that weren’t over what her future government was planning and I think it

The Conservatives are also proposing a switch from a triple lock to a double lock on pensions in 2020, as well as cuts to winter fuel payments.

The prime minister says the double lock system would mean pensions would rise in line with earnings or inflation, whichever is highest.

When asked whether pensioners would be worse off under the new system, coupled with cuts to their winter fuel payments, Ms Wolf says she believes taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for winter fuel payments for wealthy pensioners.

“Pensioners who are on low incomes will absolutely still get winter fuel payments and will be protected, so those who are struggling to get by shouldn't feel that their winter fuel payment is going to be taken away: it will be means tested,” she says.

“My view is if you are of pension age and still have very high income, it's not right for taxpayers to pay for it. My parents are still eligible for winter fuel payments and they are on high incomes and they would agree that it's not right so

I'm supportive of the view of means testing this.”

Ms Wolf voted to leave the European Union – unlike her Labour opponent Helen Hayes, who campaigned to remain and voted against the triggering of Article 50.

When asked if she will still stand up to Brexit like Ms Hayes, the Tory candidate says: “I think Helen Hayes is asking people to vote for a man and leader that did vote for Article 50, so the question is not is it Brexit or is it not, the question is if the party you vote for is going to negotiate the best deal.

“I can't think of a conversation I've had where people think Jeremy Corbyn is the best person to negotiate these deals.”

She admits she was a “reluctant leaver” who “voted to leave in the end” but adds: “I think the potential for trade and the ability to have highly-skilled people to come into the country is very important for Britain, which is why Theresa May is the best to get us that.”

It remains to be seen whether Ms Wolf stands any chance against a Labour MP with such a big majority and unfinished business after having her parliamentary career potentially cut short at just two years, but Ms Wolf maintains the only poll that will matter is the one next Thursday.

IF THERE’S anything the three Green Party candidates standing in Southwark are united on, it’s air pollution – and the belief that the country needs a different kind of politics.

Eleanor Margolies, standing in Camberwell and Peckham, wants to see a new Clean Air Act with includes incentives for drivers to scrap diesel cars.

“We need local action and national action on air pollution,” said the co-chair of Southwark Green Party, who has lived in Camberwell and Peckham for fifteen years.

“We need to stop building runways – something [Labour candidate] Harriet Harman wouldn’t commit to opposing.”

Dr Margolies, a writer, researcher and local campaigner, would also like to see more done to improve transport, education, policing, and council scrutiny, if elected.

“Transport is a huge issue here,” she said. “We would look at reopening Camberwell Station and opening a second exit at Denmark Hill, which is so overcrowded, and putting in lifts at Peckham Rye Station.

“On education we could get rid of university tuition fees, so there’s not that

perceived obstacle of going to university and ending up with huge debts.”

She would like to see increased scrutiny of the council when it comes to knocking down housing estates and “selling land to developers at very low costs” – and had said she would represent any constituents thrown out of their home if elected.

Rashid Nix, who is contesting the Dulwich and West Norwood seat, would like to see the Ultra-Low Emission Zone extended to include the constituency.

If elected, his main priorities would include building homes for local people, protecting the services that young people use such as libraries and play parks, drilling down into the root cause of knife crime, and supporting independent businesses.

YEN LIN Chong considers himself the “common sense” choice in Dulwich and West Norwood.

The independent candidate has lived in the area for almost 30 years and it is his first crack at standing in an election.

“Basically I want to bring common sense back into politics and the interests of the majority which I think have been slightly left behind by the political process,” he says.

“I came to the realisation that if you don’t participate, then you’ve got no right to complain.

“My pledge is to improve the lives of people. I expect to be a good sounding board/ lightning rod for the community – and if they feel strongly about an issue, I would take it to the House of Commons.

“I don’t claim to be any more intelligent than anyone else, but I think I’ve got perspective because of my age.”

TECH ENTREPRENEUR James Clarke says he is standing in Bermondsey and Old Southwark to give a choice to Londoners who feel let down by the established political parties.

He decided to run the day after the EU referendum “on principle” and says he regrets having just three weeks rather than three years to prepare. “The major parties are all more or less complicit in the recent political chaos in Westminster,” he said in a statement.

He is pro-European, pro-business, and pro-London. Aside from his desire to protect Londoners from the consequences of a bad Brexit, he believes in drug liberalisation and taxation, the lowering of the voting age to 16, and the removal of religion from primary schools.

Working at an insurtech start-up, a third of his colleagues are from mainland Europe and he wants to protect the rights of those who came to the UK to work and help build the country’s insurance and tech sectors.

UKIP came fourth in Bermondsey and Old Southwark in the 2015 general election and Elizabeth Jones wants to build on that position this time around.

ROBIN LAMBERT has stood as a UKIP candidate many times in the past, but feels the party has “drifted away from the centre” and is instead standing as an independent in Dulwich and West Norwood in this year’s general election.

The family lawyer, who lives in Clapham, is a seasoned campaigner and candidate for UKIP, having fought the Dartford seat in Kent in 2015, winning almost 20 per cent of the vote.

She was involved in forming a freestanding UKIP branch in Southwark in 2013 and served as its vice chairwoman from 2014-2015. “Only one thing has changed since 2015,” she said in a statement. “The majority of the people have chosen Brexit, and I intend to make sure that that is what we get. I know voters in this constituency want an end to uncontrolled immigration. They are fed up that whilst the left-wing Labour Party says it’s the government’s fault that our public services are stretched beyond their limits, many people know that it is the huge, uncontrolled rise in the population through immigration and the ensuing baby boom that is the underlying cause.”

“I left UKIP in 2014 as I felt they drifted away from the ‘centre’, were preoccupied with Nigel Farage, and the selection procedure was arduous and tended to favour cronies.

I think to allow abortion on that basis should be made illegal and I think parliament

is out of step on the public’s opinion on that issue.”

Mr Towey also wants to see changes to the benefits system and benefits continue as normal when someone is going through an appeal process.

It will only be ‘good’ when A&E is reopened

I AM absolutely appalled that the Care Quality Commission seem to accept that Slam[ South London and Maudsley], can fail in 16 out of 38 services to provide a good service! (Maudsley gets ‘good’ rating from Care Quality Comission’, Southwark News, May 25, 2017).

I want to make it clear that no blame is put on the understaffed but very good mental health staff. The blame is entirely on the shoulders of SLAM themselves. They have made it clear they do not want to take on the burden of providing an A &E service at the Maudsley hospital!

Yes, the Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (SCCG) needs to commission it. But despite the Maudsley being one of the world experts on mental health, they simply do not want to be involved in running it.

They prefer the burden of looking after people in a mental health crisis is taken on by King’s A&E. Mental health patients in a crisis having to queue up first at King’s A&E is outrageous. This includes children, which I think is scandalous.

In my role of health spokesman at Spag (Southwark pensioners action group), I had a meeting at King’s recently with the head of nursing and the psychiatrist based at King’s, who told me persons with a mental health issue, would be seen within 30 minutes and taken to a quiet area.

A week later I was with a person attending a health clinic, the consultant was more concerned with the mental issue, so rang down to A&E, and spoke to someone from mental health, who said to come down to A&E. We were seen after two hours 10 minutes.

The first thing the member of the mental health team did was to apologise for the delay, but said there was only one of her. She then said sorry about the noise. The quiet place we were expecting to be seen in, was actually in a bay, behind a curtain opposite the main desk in majors. You can imagine how quiet that was.

Recently a patient having taken an

overdose, was taken into King’s, then was certified.

I know security staff have a difficult job, but I would question that they were all mentally health trained, there were some that appeared more like bouncers in a night club.

The person was then taken in an ambulance the 50 yards across the road to the Maudsley.

So many problems could be solved simply by reopening the Maudsley A&E. It would make life a lot easier for King’s A&E staff, and mentally ill patients would be seen in the right environment.

I can assure the SLAM board, though I am in my 76th year, I will not go away until my last breath, until the mentally ill are treated in the proper environment.

THE AVERAGE bag of items donated to Mind’s East Dulwich shop is worth around £30.

£30 that could support three people to take part in a group ‘Wellbeing Session’ or enable a pregnant woman to access support to help them successfully understand and manage their own perinatal mental health. But bags of stock are worth nothing if we don’t have volunteers willing to clean items, sort them, create brilliant displays and assist our customers.

Our shop relies on volunteers, which is why for this year’s Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) we are telling volunteers ‘you make the difference’ and asking the local community ‘how can you make a difference?’

Home promise not met

THE LABOUR party in Southwark must not be allowed to get away with their council housing scandal.

For over seven years they have allowed developers to get away with building 100% luxury flats, completely unaffordable to local people.

We were told, time and time again, that this justified because the council would build thousands of council homes off site. But actions speak louder than words.

Since 2010 the Labour council have built less than 200 council homes for social rent. Yet over 2000 have been

sold or demolished. So it came as no real surprise that last week's Southwark News reported that the Labour party has finally admitted it won't meet its own building targets by next year. Residents must make a stand and vote for an MP who will fight their corner and not the corner of property developers. We need to Bring Back Simon on 8th June.

I WANT to write to defend our public services in Southwark.

I love my country, and I will fight for its decent services and social justice.

All my life I have lived in Southwark, and have never seen things as bad as they are now, and I am 74.

I am now disabled, and I can see the value of the system I paid into all my life. Only Jeremy Corbyn will stand up for ordinary people in UK. Opinion polls are irrelevant after Donald Trump. The media say that supporters of Jeremy Corbyn are delusional, but far from this myth of a weak leadership, disabled people believe that Jeremy Corbyn is a man of exceptional decency, integrity and honour.

Yes – I have grey hair but I am a Corbyn supporter. Our logic is that it takes a fantastically strong man to stand up for the weak and the vulnerable. We think that Jeremy Corbyn is actually displaying an awe-inspiring rectitude, we think that Jeremy Corbyn is actually very noble.

In contrast we point to the parlous jungle capitalism of a feral elite, using everything in their power to destroy Jeremy Corbyn along with their Blairite chums.

We think of the Tories as brutal bullies. Once upon a time, there were some decent Tories, but all that remains seems to be a disgusting detritus.

Please vote Labour at the General Election. Please defend the public services of Southwark.

OT A cough that won’t go away? Is breathlessness making simple tasks difficult?

If you have any respiratory symptoms that are causing you concern, get them checked out straight away.

That’s the message from GPs in Southwark this summer, who are urging patients to Be Clear on Cancer – particularly respiratory cancers, which are those affecting your breathing.

If you have a persistent cough lasting over three weeks, or experience breathlessness when completing everyday tasks, you may have early signs of lung disease, including cancer, and you should make an appointment to see your GP. Many premature deaths in England are caused by respiratory disease and cancer and many of these are diagnosed and treated late, so it’s important to act quickly if you have any concerns.

People aged 50 and over are at greater risk of having undiagnosed respiratory problems and make up 97 per cent of lung cancer diagnoses. So it’s particularly important if you fall within this age group to get any unusual symptoms checked out.

As well as age, there are other factors that increase your risk of respiratory illness. These include tobacco smoking, repeated chest infections, breathing London air for many years and some occupations.

Older residents of Southwark who were in the building trade, or boilermakers and dockworkers, and their families living with them in the same house, may have been exposed to harmful dusts that can have a longterm impact on lungs.

The effect of the orders would be:(a) to introduce a south-westbound segregated cycle lane in CALTON AVENUE between its junctions with Court Lane and Dulwich Village, aligned with the south-eastern kerb; (b) to introduce a north-eastbound segregated cycle lane in TURNEY ROAD between a point 28 metres south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Dulwich Village and its junction with Dulwich Village, aligned with the north-western kerb; (e) to introduce a southbound semi-segregated cycle lane in FARQUHAR ROAD between its junction with Dulwich Wood Avenue and a point opposite its southernmost junction with Jasper Road, aligned with the western and south-western kerb; (f) to introduce new or extend existing lengths of ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in:- (i) BURBAGE ROAD, on both sides at its junction with Turney Road; (ii) CALTON AVENUE, (1) on both sides at its junction with Woodwarde Road, (2) on the north-west side at its junction with Gilkes Crescent; (3) on both sides between its junctions with Gilkes Crescent and Dulwich Village; (iii) COLBY ROAD, on both sides at its junction with Dulwich Wood Avenue; (iv) COURT LANE, (1) on both sides at its junction with Calton Avenue, and (2) on the north-east side at its junction with Dekker Road; (ix) JASPER ROAD, on both sides at its southern junction with Farquhar Road; (x) TOWNLEY ROAD, on the northeast side at its junction with Calton Avenue; (xi) TURNEY ROAD, (1) on the north-west side between its junction with Dulwich Village and its eastern junction with Roseway, (2) on the north-west side at its western junction with Roseway, (3) on the south-east side between its junctions with Dulwich Village and Boxall Road, (4) on both sides at its junction with Pickwick Road; (5) on both sides at its junction with Burbage Road, (6) on the south-east side at the vehicular access to Dulwich Sports Ground; and (7) on both sides at its junction with Croxted Road; and (xii) WOODWARDE ROAD, on both sides at its junction with Calton Avenue; (g) to introduce loading restrictions which would operate between 7 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm on Mondays to Fridays in CALTON AVENUE on both sides between a point 14.2 metres north-east of the north-eastern wall of No. 1d Calton Avenue and its junction with Dulwich Village; (h) to relocate an existing car club parking place from the south-east side of Calton Avenue to the north-east side of GILKES CRESCENT, at the side of No. 7 Calton Avenue; (i) to provide a new loading bay, 10.1 metres in length, which would operate between Midnight and 7 am, 10 am and 4 pm and 7 pm and Midnight on Mondays to Fridays and at any time on Saturdays and Sundays, in CALTON AVENUE on the north-west side outside No. 1d Calton Avenue; (j) to reduce in length and formalise the existing free echelon parking places on the north-east side of DULWICH VILLAGE outside Nos. 25-49 Dulwich Village; (k) to update the designation of the existing segregated southbound contra-flow cycle lane in FARQUHAR ROAD between its southern junction with Jasper Road and Crystal Palace Parade, and to update the existing one-way traffic working provision for vehicles other than pedal cycles in the adjoining carriageway; and (l) to formalise an existing cycle track on a footpath at the following location:- GREEN DALE, a segregated cycle track for the use of pedal cycles only, comprising all that part of the footpath as is bounded on the north-east by the north-eastern edge of that footpath and on the south-west by a line drawn at least 1.5 metres south-west of and parallel to that north-eastern edge and marked by a segregating kerb, as extends from the south-eastern kerb-line of the vehicular access to No. 65 Green Dale to the north-western kerb-line of the vehicular access to Greendale Close.

3. Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it has approved under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the provision of ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossings at the following locations:(a) CALTON AVENUE, the centre of which would be located at the common boundary of Nos. 31 and 33 Calton Avenue. Zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times, would be laid on the north-west side for a distance of 6.5 metres north-east of and 17.5 metres south-west of the crossing, and on the south-east side for a distance of 14 metres north-east of and 7 metres south-west of the crossing; and (b) TURNEY ROAD, the centre of which would be located 11 metres north-east of the north-eastern kerb-line of Boxall Road. Zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times, would be laid on the north-west side for a distance of 6.5 metres north-east of and 10 metres south-west of the crossing, and on the south-east side for a distance of 10 metres either side of the crossing.

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Scoresby Street, between Blackfriars Road and Gambia Street.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be via Blackfriars Road, Nicholson Street, Chancel Street, Dolben Street, Great Suffolk Street, Union Street.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

The purpose of the Order is to facilitate street parties as indicated in the schedule to this notice.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit any vehicle from:-

(a) entering or proceeding in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice on the date and between the hours specified in that schedule;

PREMIER LEAGUE Crystal Palace are the eye-catching headliners of Dulwich Hamlet’s pre-season fixture schedule this summer.

The Eagles will head to Champion Hill in July, along with Championship Brentford, troubled Leyton Orient, who were relegated from League Two last season, and Crawley Town.

Manager Gavin Rose’s side will also be on the road in pre-season, travelling to Beckenham Town, Lewes, Cray Valley and Aveley.

Tournament aims to unite communities

AT LEAST sixteen youth teams from different international backgrounds will compete in the Community Union League (CUL) in Kennington later this month.

The aim of the league is “facilitating cohesion and assimilation into the wider society”.

Youth players representing countries such as Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Somalia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Ecuador will take part.

CUL Social Secretary Dr Husam Awadalla said: “The league is all about football, a sport that unites people of all backgrounds and that they relate to.

“CUL will provide the different communities in the UK an avenue to compete together in football, bringing communities closer to each other and facilitating cohesion and assimilation into the wider society.

“This is targeted to the youth, specifically those under 20, with the aim of engaging young people in useful activities and sway them away from crime or extremism and terrorism.

Fisher’s new funding scheme to boost player budget

FISHER HAVE announced a new investment initiative aimed at ensuring the club remains “democratic and supporterowned”.

The Fisher FC 12th Man Fund is an overhaul of their membership scheme, and the club hope it will increase revenue. Fisher were relegated to the Southern Counties East Football League First Division last season.

“We’re keen to remain democratic and supporters owned, continually safeguarding the future of the club we all love,” new membership secretary Joe Arif said. “But for this to remain viable we must increase the revenue streams and see the profit and loss sheet back in

SOUTHWARK AQUATICS continue to go from strength to strength after they recently returned to the newly refurbished Seven Islands Leisure Centre.

In May, eight of their swimmers took part in the London Regional Championships, with two making finals and a number of personal bests.

Treasurer Kerry Fox said: “We've had a fantastic season and are now setting our sights on getting swimmers to national level.”

‘I want fans’ voices to be heard by club’

MILLWALL’S FAN on the Board says he wants to be an effective communication link between supporters and the club.

Micky Simpson took up the position last season, and has already brought a number of issues to the club’s attention, including some newspapers’ coverage of the pitch invasion at the end of the play-off final.

He wants Lions fans to know that he is available to contact with any issues they may have, and he will make sure that the club are made aware of them.

“On a day-to-day basis I am liaising with the club on fan issues, speaking with various departments and keeping a line of communication open between fans and the club,” he said.

“If there’s a bad run of press then fans know need to know the club is dealing with it. They sometimes don’t know the club are doing stuff behind the scenes. I want to make sure the fans know they are being listened to.

“Emails I get are shared with the club, as are questions raised on Twitter.”

Simpson regularly speaks with Steve Kavanagh, and conveyed his belief that there should be no punishment for fans who entered the pitch after the league game with Northampton in April, following an incident in the stands when a fan suffered a heart attack.

He will be sitting down with the Millwall chief executive over the summer.

“Every time I post a statement I need to be sure the facts are correct, if I have to defend fans I need to know the full facts,” he said.

“But if something is indefensible then it can’t be defended.

“I have some ideas I want to discuss with Steve, issues around catering, how fans are treated.

“If I feel I need to go to the club I’ll forward on concerns from supporters to the relevant people.”

MILLWALL CEO Steve Kavanagh believes being in the Championship will help the club attract players on loan from the Premier League.

The Lions will complete permanent transfer for James Meredith and Tom Elliott this month, and could also utilise the loan market to boost their squad.

Millwall boss Neil Harris has already seen the benefit of bringing in loan players. In his first full season in charge he signed George Saville and Jed Wallace, both from Wolves, before Chris Taylor arrived from Blackburn Rovers.

Last season Harris returned to Wolves for Wallace, before recruiting centreback Jake Cooper from Reading.

All of those players made impacts, with Wallace and Cooper making important contributions as Millwall won promotion from League One in May.

The offer of Championship football should mean the club can compete for promising Premier League talent, and Millwall can point to their role in the development of Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane as further incentive to tempt players.

Kavanagh stressed it is crucial any player joining on a temporary basis buys into the ethos of the club.

“That’s something we’ll discuss and look at,” Kavanagh said. “When you’re in the Championship you can attract Premier League loans.

“But for someone to come in on loan he has to have the right ingredients to ensure that first and foremost he feels and believes he is a Millwall player for that season. He needs to feel he’s part of that set-up and not just someone on the periphery.

“If we find someone with those right ingredients it’s something we might consider.

“We’ve got contacts all over the place.

Neil has played with a number of players now at different clubs, the chairman has contacts, I know various

chief executives around football. And that’s before we even get into the rest of the management team and the scouting set-up. There are a huge number of contacts.

“Harry Kane came here – people know what a loan to here can mean.

But we want the core of the squad to be Millwall players.”

Kavanagh revealed the club have a long list of potential transfer targets that they are working on.

Millwall are hopeful Shaun Williams, Shaun Cummings and Jimmy Abdou will sign new contracts.

There is also the likelihood that players already contracted to the club will seek new deals, with Lee Gregory and Byron Webster saying after the play-off final win over Bradford that they would be happy to talk about extensions.

“The agents will talk to us and as part of our strategy we obviously look at where things are, how long they have left on their contracts,” Kavanagh said.

“We try to make sure players are settled and not thinking about the

future. That’s not always possible, we’ve had a couple of players who got to the end of this season out of contract, but they performed.

“Jimmy Abdou is out of contract, but he performed miraculously. We’re talking to Jimmy.

“Shaun Williams is out of contract, he played exceptionally well last season and we’re still talking to him.

“You don’t ideally have that, but it works all ways. You always want players to be settled but ultimately we’ve got to build a squad that can develop and evolve and grow in the Championship.

“We’ve got lists as long as your arm containing names of players we want to come in. There are some we are talking to and we know exactly what we want to do.

“It’s not always easy to secure the first target. If we can’t get the first target we’ll get the second or the third or the fourth. They’re not on the list if they’re not of interest, so just because they’re fourth on the list doesn’t mean they’re not a top-quality player.”

“There might be one running session, one football-based session, and then the third one might be a video-analysis session showing clips of how we want to play this year and how we played last year; how we can improve, what we did well and want

to do again.

“There will also be bike or pool sessions as well as working in the gym, so we rotate those sessions.”

Last year, Millwall played a behindclosed-doors friendly against Fulham and in July they plan to play two games, most likely against English opposition.

However, the club have yet to decide if they will be available to fans wishing to attend.

Millwall set for Portugal June 26, when the club’s medical and fitness teams will carry out routine tests to gauge players’ physical levels after the summer break.

Millwall organised the training camp months ago, and it will be the third summer in a row Harris will have

brought his squad to Portugal.

Last year, Harris explained what kind of work the players will be put through. “Portugal will be three sessions a day. In that heat they won’t be three physical, high-tempo sessions.

MILLWALL PUSHED through the announcement of the signing of James Meredith as his former boss Phil Parkinson was still trying to convince him to join Bolton.

The Lions confirmed on Monday that Meredith will join on July 1, subject to a medical.

Meredith is currently on holidays after the end of Bradford’s season, which ended with a League One playoff final defeat to Millwall at Wembley in May. Former Bantams boss Parkinson brought Meredith to the club from York City in 2012, and the defender was in the side that defeated Northampton 3-0 in that season’s League Two play-off final.

Meredith, 29, made 211 starts for Bradford and came off the bench nine times. He scored four goals for the Bantams, including the equaliser against Millwall in a 1-1 League One draw at Valley Parade in January.

Parkinson was trying to use his influence to persuade Meredith to join him at promoted Bolton, and link up with another ex-Lion, defender Mark Beevers.

Meredith had been offered a new contract by Bradford boss Stuart McCall, but he turned it down as his focus was on playing Championship football having never experienced that level before.

Bolton News reported on Monday that Parkinson had spoken to Meredith, and Millwall wanted to end any speculation around the player’s future by confirming he had decided his future lay in south London.

Meredith has signed a two-year deal and he admitted he is relishing the chance to play in front of Millwall fans at The Den. He also revealed it was Harris’ ambition and “big plans” that convinced him to sign for the club.

“I met Neil and he came across so well,” he told the club’s website. “He's ambitious and has big plans both for the football club and for me as an individual, which is exactly what you want to hear and made Millwall the most attractive option for me.

Forde, 37, is leaving the Lions after nine years and 339 first-team appearances.

He was the first-choice goalkeeper for most of that time, but lost his place to Jordan Archer in 2015-16 before spending last season on loan at Portsmouth where he won the League Two title.

Cardiff in 2008, and his form for the club, helping them to promotion from League One in 2010, led to international recognition. He won 23 caps with the Republic of Ireland after making his debut against Northern Ireland in 2011.

Forde is taking his coaching badges, but he intends to carry on playing.

CENTRE-FORWARD Tom Elliott is set to undergo a medical at Millwall on Friday ahead of a proposed switch from AFC Wimbledon.

Elliott is available on a free transfer with his current contract expiring at the end of June.

Twenty-six-year-old Elliott scored thirteen goals in 46 appearances last season, including the equaliser for the Dons in the 2-2 draw with Millwall in January.

He would provide competition for first-choice strikers Steve Morison and Lee Gregory, starting with the 2017-18 Championship season.

Elliott was born in Leeds and started his career with his hometown club, making four appearances before moving to Hamilton in Scotland.

Following his release he joined Stockport County but it was only after he signed for Cambridge United that he really showed his talent, scoring 26 goals in 87 games.

Dons boss Neal Ardley brought him to the club in the summer of 2015, and Elliott spearheaded the

attack as the club won promotion to League One. A former Millwall target, James Hanson, was impressed with Elliott, who scored in AFC Wimbledon’s 3-2 defeat to Bradford in October. “Wimbledon are a good side and Tom Elliott has done really well,” Hanson said. “I remember when he was on trial at Bradford under Peter Jackson.

Gregory and Morison affecting their league form.

But Lions boss Neil Harris has waited until the summer before making his move for Elliott.

With doubts over the future of Fred Onyedinma, and Harris using Aiden O’Brien more in wide areas, strengthening the attack for what is likely to be a difficult season was one of the main summer priorities.

Elliott will challenge for a firstteam place, casting doubt on the immediate futures of Harry Smith and Jamie Philpot, who are both likely to be made available for loan next season.

The Lions are looking to increase their midfield options after winning promotion to the Championship last month.

Shaun Williams and Jimmy Abdou have been offered new deals, and Millwall boss Neil Harris wants to bring in 25-yearold box-to-box midfielder Leonard to provide more competition in that area.

Leonard joined Southend from Plymouth in 2011 and has made 236 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals.

But Harris faces competition for Plympton-born Leonard’s signature from the other two clubs promoted from League One this season, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.

Blades boss Chris Wilder confirmed their bid for Leonard had been rejected.

And Brown insisted Southend are holding firm in their determination to keep one of their key players.

“Things are bubbling along where Lenny is concerned but we’ve put a ‘not for sale’ sign on his head at the moment and will do all we can to keep him,” Brown told Echo News this week.

“The chairman has met with Lenny for talks but we’ve had two more clubs come in for him from the Championship.

“There’s a lot of interest but we’ve knocked back all the bids so far.”

Like last summer, Millwall are determined to do their transfer business as early as possible.

Defender James Meredith and striker Tom Elliott will join on July 1, and Harris hopes Leonard will also make the switch.
