Show your support for a tube at Bricklayers Arms

A

campaign was launched this week to build a new tube station at Bricklayers Arms as part of the proposed Bakerloo Line extension.

TfL's consultation ended in April this year on the proposed extension, and proposed two new stations near Old Kent Road Tesco and Toys R Us. Bricklayers Arms in this proposal would probably only have a ventilation shaft built on it.

Now campaigners are looking for the public to back their calls for a third station at Bricklayers Arms. They will be going to all politicians, businesses, churches, mosques and schools to get support.

Think what huge benefits a tube station could do for the area around the flyover and roundabout. Elephant and Castle and Bermondsey tube stations aren't that far away, but too much of a walk to make the area an attractive destination for some. Tower Bridge is an iconic London landmark, yet the south end of Tower Bridge Road you can't get a tube to. On the north side of the river there is Tower Hill tube. But this call for a tube shouldn't just be thought about in terms of nightlife and tourism; what about the residents? Congested roads mean some areas take far too long to get to. Look at Bermondsey tube, it has transformed the area for residents and businesses new and old.

So while TfL is considering building a ventilation shaft at Bricklayers' Arms it should put serious thought to also building a station.

The Bakerloo Line extension is an opportunity not to be missed. Campaigners are organising a rally on the Bricklayers’ Arms roundabout on Saturday, November 4 from 11.45am to 12.15pm. Changes planned for MP constituencies

lectoral boundary changes may not, on the face of it, sound the most interesting of subjects - but what is being proposed may change who you can vote for as your local MP. Revised proposals from the Boundary Commission were released this week in an attempt to reduce the number of MPs across the country and ‘even out’ the number of people in each constituency.

Walworth could be split between two MPs and part of Peckham could be in a newlynamed Dulwich & Sydenham constituency.

Film gives a glimpse into the life of hop pickers of our past

A SILENT film capturing the life of Bermondsey hop pickers will be shown for the first time in 80 years.

‘Oppin was first shown in 1930 as part of a public health campaign run by Bermondsey Borough Council.

Shot on 35mm film, the black and white film shows families in the area preparing for the hopping season and travelling to farms in Kent for the summer.

It was recently digitised by Southwark Local History Library and Archive and is now available for the public to view for free.

Heritage officer Lisa Soverall, who looks after the library’s film collection, said it was one of 30 films produced by the council between the 1920s and 1940s.

“They had quite a progressive way of getting public health out to the local people of Bermondsey and at that time there was a huge pandemic of diseases so they put out these public health campaigns and one of the ways they did that was through films because it could reach a much wider audience,” she told the News.

“Bermondsey folk spent their time picking hops during the holiday season and they were working holidays which provided a much-needed income for working-class families for things like a winter coat for a child.

“They would sometimes go for six weeks or more and often the children would miss the first couple of weeks of school so often you could tell the child who had been hopping.”

Viewers will see Bermondsey families getting ready for what they called the “’oppin season” and carrying out their duties on the Kentish farms.

“You see them putting all their

belongings onto trucks, including chair and prams; it was literally like moving house for many families,” said Lisa.

“The families stayed in corrugated iron huts and they generally went as families but the husband stayed behind for work and would join them at weekends.

“You will see the tallyman come round to measure the hops, scenes of the hop warehouses, and picking the hops, and the circumstances around how they lived and socialised.

“Pre-1965 housing was pretty dire with the back-to-back pre-war housing and most buildings were not really fit for human habitation so for a workingclass family to be out in the fresh air, albeit working, was too good to be refused.”

The film is on show at Southwark Local History Library and Archive, in Borough High Street, every day throughout October and can be viewed after this.

A RALLY will be held in a bid to persuade transport bosses to build a tube station at Bricklayers Arms.

Three community groups have joined forces with politicians in a campaign to convince Transport for London to build a third tube station at Bricklayers Arms roundabout as part of the Bakerloo Line extension.

Earlier this year, TfL consulted on plans to build two tube stations on the Old Kent Road and a 25 metre-high ventilation shaft at Bricklayers Arms as part of plans for the £3billion extension.

But the proposals came under fire from residents and businesses in the area who opposed the ventilation shaft and called for a tube station instead.

Bermondsey Street Area Partnership, Tower Bridge Road Alliance, and Bricklayers Arms Tenants’ and Residents’ Association have now organised a rally for November 4.

Suhel Ahmed, who owns Tower Tandoori on Tower Bridge Road, said the area desperately needed a “transport hub” to survive.

“What we are saying is the ventilation shaft would mean six to seven years of major works and disruption to the community, the road and the area, with nothing to show for it at the end,” the 30year-old told the News.

“The Old Kent Road, New Kent Road and Tower Bridge Road need a transport

hub to survive as an area.

“It’s a great place but Tower Bridge Road isn’t the thriving area it should be because we don’t have the transport hub.

“We have to tell people to get off at London Bridge and walk ten minutes to get here, but nobody wants to go to the restaurant on a bus and nobody wants to walk ten minutes in the cold.”

Mr Ahmed said lots of businesses in the area were experiencing the same problems and that a tube station could resolve the issue.

“The roundabout is a good location for a tube station as well because it’s got the exits there and it’s like Old Street,” he added.

Sir Simon Hughes, former Lib Dem MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, added: “36 years after I first campaigned for an extension of the Bakerloo line down the Old Kent Road at last we are within reach of a result.

“To benefit all our local communities, we need three stops between Elephant and New Cross, including one at Bricklayers Arms, and the roundabout

was designed to make this possible.”

Matthew Yates, TfL’s head of transport planning and projects, said: “We did carefully consider the Bricklayers Arms junction as a possible station location prior to the public consultation, but we decided it was not suitable as there was

insufficient available land to allow for construction. It is also close to the existing Tube network.

“Following the results of the public consultation we will now carefully review our plans for the Bakerloo line extension, while continuing to liaise

closely with the local community."

A rally will be held at the Bricklayers Arms traffic island from 11.45am to 12.15pm on Saturday, November 4.

in the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency, and instead should be included in a revised Brixton and Vauxhall constituency,” a spokesperson for the Commission said.

“To compensate for the exclusion of this ward, they recommended that the Faraday ward be included in the constituency, from the existing Camberwell and Peckham constituency.

We agree.”

Proposals for a new ‘Peckham & Lewisham West’ constituency were “largely objected to” during the last consultation because it proposed splitting Peckham by including parts of it with Lewisham and New Cross.

Instead, the name of Camberwell & Peckham would be retained under revised proposals and the constituency would lose Faraday ward to BOS and Peckham Rye to Dulwich & Sydenham.

The newly-named Dulwich & Sydenham constituency would be half made up of Southwark wards: College, East Dulwich, Peckham Rye, and Village.

The other half would be the Lewisham wards of Crofton Park, Forest Hill, Perry Vale, and Sydenham.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark, told the News: “I’m pleased that the commission listened to the suggestions about not creating an orphan ward [Bishop’s] by putting a tiny bit of land into a wholly Southwark constituency, but it’s disappointing that Walworth is being broken up – although I’m not sure this will go through at all.”

Jeremy Leach, of the Walworth Society, said the revised proposals were an improvement on the previous proposals – but he would still like to see Walworth reunited.

“It’s much better than it was; this at least makes some sense because we are still in a Southwark constituency whereas the other proposal was bizarre,” he said.

“But it’s disappointing that the desire for Walworth wards to be reunited has not been heard.

“During the last set of proposals we made a submission in person and told them about all the work groups in Walworth had been doing to strengthen the sense of identity for the area and how we were disappointed a line had been drawn down Walworth Road.”

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich & West

Norwood, added: “The latest proposal cuts across the coherence of the current Dulwich and West Norwood constituency, which was established in 1997 but which is based on the two preceding Dulwich and Norwood constituencies which date back to 1885.

“The proposals are particularly damaging for Herne Hill, West Dulwich and Crystal Palace which already suffer from being divided on the borough boundary and which under the proposals would also be represented by two different MPs. “This is something I argued strongly against in the first round of consultation and I will continue to fight it.”

The Boundary Commission for England will consult on the revised proposals for eight weeks from October 17 to December 11. The proposals will face a third and final consultation before being put to a vote in Westminster next year. SOUTHWARK MAY no longer get a fourth MP as revised electoral boundary changes reveal the borough could remain as three constituencies.

The Boundary Commission for England is redrawing the electoral map to reduce the total number of MPs from 650 to 600 and “even out” the number of people in each constituency.

Officials initially proposed dividing Southwark into four constituencies: Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Dulwich and West Norwood, Camberwell and Vauxhall Bridge, and Peckham and West Lewisham.

But the latest revised proposals released on Tuesday, October 17, revealed plans for three constituencies: Bermondsey & Old Southwark, Camberwell & Peckham, and a newly-

named Dulwich & Sydenham.

There was criticism from Bermondsey & Old Southwark (BOS) MP Neil Coyle and Vauxhall MP Kate Hoey earlier this year after the Commission proposed to include Lambeth’s Bishop’s ward in BOS. The MPs said it would be unfair to the Bishop’s community to include it as an “orphan ward” in north Southwark – and it has now been abandoned under the revised proposals.

Mr Coyle also called for Walworth’s three wards (East Walworth, Faraday, and Newington) to be reunited under the changes.

The latest proposals suggest Faraday joins East Walworth as part of BOS, but Newington be moved to Camberwell & Peckham.

Winnie - queen of Greenhive dies aged 107 Winnie celebrating her 107th birthday

Winifred Williams was thought to be the borough’s oldest person

FRIENDS AND carers of 107year-old Winifred Williams, are in mourning after the Peckham pensioner’s death at Greenhive care home.

Staff believe it is likely that Winnie was the oldest person living in Southwark, although this had not been confirmed.

Edna Rafferty, the care home’s deputy manager, said Winnie started feeling unwell on Wednesday October 4, and had stopped eating. A doctor prescribed her antibiotics on the Thursday, but on Friday she died in her sleep.

“This is the end of an era,” Edna said. “Greenhive opened in 2002, and Winnie was one of the originals who moved in. Out of that group she carried on living the longest. So for the care home staff who transferred to Greenhive from other Anchor care homes, this is the end of an era.

“Winnie also came up with the Greenhive name. We asked the residents to name the home when they moved in. She was the queen of Greenhive.

“She would often sit in the reception on a chair, and greet and talk to the guests. And she knew the door codes, so she would open the door for people.”

Winnie had no known relatives, and was an only child. She was born in Wales in 1910 – the year before George V was crowned King.

Her parents moved to Southwark when she was a child, and she attended Rockingham Road Elementary School in New Kent Road.

For her 107th birthday on August 2, the home was decked out in red – her favourite colour – and staff baked a cat-themed cake for the animal-lover.

And when the News visited on her 106th birthday, her best friend Grace Watson said: “I met Winnie 35 years ago when I was working in another care home in Sumner Road before she moved to Greenhive.

“She always said ‘you must come and visit, you must come and visit,’ so I have done every year.

“Winnie loves music and has hundreds of vinyl records and CDs, and she was a great dancer. Her favourite artists are Aled Jones, Anne Shelton and Doris Day. “When I first looked after her she was a very big reader, and would love writing letters to people.”

Her funeral had been planned for October 25, but Edna said it will be rescheduled, after it was discovered on Monday that Winnie owns a private burial plot in Camberwell Old Cemetery (Forest Hill Road). A new date has yet to be confirmed.

Appeal after a ‘planned hit’ on conservation site

A CONSERVATION worker has urged the public to look out for two vital machines stolen from Stave Hill Ecology Park.

A chipper and power scythe machine went missing from the Rotherhithe park overnight between October 10 and 11.

The equipment, collectively worth about £5,000, was bought using funding a few years ago and is essential for the Conservation Volunteers team to carry out their work.

Rebeka Clark, who has been site manager at the park for almost 30 years, said whoever broke in was “lower than dirt” and appealed to the public to keep an eye out for the machines.

“It evidently wasn’t a spur of the moment thing; it was planned because they must have had all the right equipment to get through our security,” she said.

“It wasn’t just a result of some little bolt cutters; they’ve brought an ankle grinder.

Our machinery was chained up and they went through those chains.

“We are pretty certain they parked in Cow Lane by Redriff School because we found the marks of the shredder going that way and they must have had a van, so we are really hoping that somebody saw a great big orange machine begin loaded into a van.”

The site manager said the power scythe was “absolutely essential” for cutting the meadow and that volunteers would now have to resort to using hand scythes.

“We’ve just tried to create a patch of countryside for local residents,” she said.

VOLUNTEERS ON the Sceaux Gardens estate in Camberwell are appealing for donations of old power tools, after their Community Cycling Hub was burgled.

More than £10,000 of equipment was taken from the hub, which offered free bike repairs and gave children and homeless people the chance to learn fixing skills.

Sue Elvidge, who runs the Cycle Hub, said it was burgled in the early hours of Wednesday, August 4. “They took all the tools, and one child’s BMX, even though it had a buckled wheel. And there was actually some high-end stuff that wasn’t stolen,” Sue said.

The Hub used to open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 1pm every week, and five day a week during the holidays. But since the burglary the whole thing has “completely slowed down”.

only £315 before its deadline for pledges ended on October 9. They say their best hope now is that locals might donate their old tools.

After police were called, it was discovered that the crooks had got in via a corner of the building not visible from anyone’s home. “They broke in through glass panels that we didn’t realise it was possible to get in through,” said Sue. “Once they were in they just opened the front door from the inside.

“Forensics came, but they said the people must have been wearing gloves because there were no finger prints.”

The Cycle Hub was a simple wash room before the council offered it to them in spring 2014 to use for three years.

“Our clientele is a whole cross section of the community. One of the supporters is 84, we’ve had a lot of people from outside the estate as well.

We had an overwhelming response from people,” said Sue. The hub was used by social enterprise Squeaky Chains, run by St Mungo’s Charity. Help was also given from the PemPeople group which operates from a bike shop in Peckham High Street.

Dispersal zones in run up to Halloween and Bonfire Night

POLICE ARE increasingly using “dispersal zones” to tackle gangs wielding knives and shooting fireworks on estates in the run up to Halloween and Bonfire Night.

The dispersal zones make it an offence for troublemakers to simply enter a geographical area, and they face arrest if they refuse to leave.

Detective Inspector Luke Williams, the borough’s “gangs proactive” officer, told the News he has authorised them in Camberwell, Peckham and Walworth, in places with a link with gang activity, usually by males under-25.

He explained they can be used where there is anti-social behaviour, meaning the public are being “harassed, alarmed or distressed”, or if there’s the “appearance of crime and disorder”.

“The ones we have authorised before have been in relation to crime and disorder, because on a number of occasions a large group had been running around with knives and machetes,” Luke said. “One we used last week [on October 10] was when kids were throwing fireworks. It covered an area including the McDonald’s in Butterfly Walk (Camberwell) and the Crawford Estate.”

The size of the dispersal zone will depend on the intelligence, with a “mix of common sense” based on where the people might be going.

“If I think a gang on Estate A might seek reprisal from a gang on Estate B, then I will have the intelligence to set up a dispersal zone,” Luke said. “And you don’t just go for one area. Common sense tells you that if the gang is in A then they will need to travel a certain route to get there.”

The detective added: “They are really useful in the position where someone doesn’t have a knife [so they can’t just be arrested for possession], but we know they’re making people’s lives a misery…

“We would absolutely do all we can either to deal with that. And it sends a strong message to we’re not going to stand by. People shouldn’t be afraid to come out of their homes. It’s completely unacceptable.”

Millwall fans raise thousands for Bradley Lowery Foundation BERMONDSEY

MILLWALL FANS will hand over a cheque in memory of young Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery when the football clubs meet next month.

Little Bradley was just six when he died from cancer in July, after capturing the hearts of people across the world, including former Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.

The Bradley Lowery Foundation was set up to fund the youngster’s treatment for neuroblastoma, but money raised will now go to other children to help pay for their treatment, among other things.

Millwall steward Ellen Butler, along with season ticket holders Kelly Webster, Martin Cooper, and Chris and Sue Prete joined forces to organise a charity night in aid of the foundation.

The event, held at Eltham Hill Social Club on Friday, October 13, raised £2,231.

Memorial had been removed as council deals with borough’s burial space crisis

A BERMONDSEY man has been reunited with his grandfather’s headstone after it disappeared from his grave.

Dave Nicholls discovered the headstone was missing during a visit to his grandfather’s grave – where his grandmother’s ashes were also scattered – in Camberwell New Cemetery last month.

The 50-year-old was unaware the council had been given permission to dig up graves at the cemetery’s One Tree Hill site and build a pathway and new graves as it deals with the borough’s burial space shortage.

Mr Nicholls had planned to scatter his mother’s ashes with her parents after she died recently, but had to make other arrangements after finding the headstone had been removed.

Cemetery workers have since managed to locate the headstone and return it to Mr Nicholls, along with a stone nymph decoration, following an article in the

“We have made every effort, over a number of years, to contact people; through public consultations and a series of public exhibitions for our plans, by posting notices at all the entrances to the cemetery, and in the area of works, and by placing adverts in the Southwark News.

“We have a chronic shortage of burial space in the borough and if nothing is done it will run out next year.

“We are currently working to create more space, but no graves have been disturbed or dug up during this work.

Pet fish dumped on stairwell - in tupperware box

RSPCA officers were alarmed to find four abandoned pet fish in a small Tupperware box, accompanied by a note that said “if you want have them”.

The two goldfish and two common pleco were found in the communal area of flats in Rye Lane.

Inspector Anthony Pulfer attended after a call from a worried resident, and

said the water they were swimming in was “filthy and completely inadequate”.

“It was clear by the state of the container that this had actually been what the fish had been kept in for a long period of time,” Insp Pulfer said.

“It was filthy and completely inadequate. Especially for the two tropical pleco fish who should not be kept in cold water, with no heat or filter.

“They had clearly grown in size and were around three quarters of the size of the container. Then to make matters

worse, whoever owned them decided they didn’t want them anymore and just dumped them, leaving someone else to pick up the pieces.

“Sadly a lot of people get fish and think they will be easy to look after. But fish do require specialist equipment and knowledgeable owners so they aren’t ideal pets for everyone. It’s just sad that these fish have clearly not been looked after properly at all.”

The fish were found on September 30, and have now been given a new home.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has moved to reassure locals that the annual Peckham Square Christmas Celebration will still happen this year, after residents voiced fears it would not go ahead.

Since 2011 a Christmas carol concert has been thrown under the Peckham Arch, with a giant Christmas tree set up.

With the forthcoming demolition of the Arch, the council had suggested moving the event under the Peckham Library canopy. But by September, with scarce details that any preparation had been made, Sumner Residents Association member Maureen Baker called on local councillors to find out what, if anything, had been planned for Christmas.

Maureen, 71, of Pioneer Street, approached the News after she’d heard the council was not running the event this year. But on Tuesday, October 17, Cllr Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for communities, leisure and safety, said: “We are really sorry to hear that there is confusion about the arrangements this year. We will work with the Residents Association to make sure that the concert can go ahead.”

Maureen last week told the News: “They were telling us when all the

redevelopment of the square was given planning approval that the Arch would be demolished by now. Then the latest we heard was that it’s not going to be pulled down until they finish building Mountview Academy [in Peckham Hill Street].”

Since 2011 the festivities have been paid for using grants from the council’s Cleaner Greener Safer fund, allocated in three-year blocks. £10,350 was allocated in 2015, which Maureen said “should still be available” for Christmas 2017.

Maureen said: “[the carol concert] had been progressing every year. We had market traders. We’ve had carol singers from Oliver Goldsmith School, Theatre Peckham and Mountview. Morrisons were donating food and Wetherspoons were giving away hot drinks. And we had money spare last year to pay for a talking Christmas tree for the kids.”

THE COUNCIL has launched a campaign to hear exactly what residents think of it, and their views about the future of the borough.

From today, Thursday, residents can respond to questions online about the future of the borough and give their opinion on what has been done well and what could be done better as part of the ‘Southwark Conversation’.

Speaking to the News, Council Leader, Cllr Peter John, said two things prompted the Southwark Conversation: Donald Trump and the Grenfell Tower fire.

“The first was Donald Trump being elected in November,” he said. “It was such an unexpected result and almost as if the electorate in the US were saying they didn’t accept the status quo.

“It’s the sense of disillusionment in politics and I think that was evident in Brexit too.

“The second was the Grenfell Tower fire and seeing how out of touch Kensington and Chelsea council were in the immediate aftermath.

“It was a question of ‘is politics really that detached from the public on these big issues?’

“I don’t think we have that dysfunctional relationship between the council and residents in Southwark, but it’s about making sure nobody thinks they are being taken for granted.”

The council leader said officers would be “anywhere and everywhere” and that he wanted people to get involved who wouldn’t normally. Details of locations and times of where officers will go are to be published in the near future.

“We’ve gone through a period of real change as a borough in the last decade and that doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon.

It’s really important we understand people’s opinions, fears, ambitions and aspirations,” he said.

“There are still some massive inequalities in Southwark in terms of health groups, education, and job opportunities and we want people to feel they can go to any part of the borough and that they have a stake.

“Are we getting things right? What is people’s lived experience and what do they want

to see Southwark look like in the future? Are people getting the right kind of jobs?

“People think not enough housing being built is affordable, so we want to know what we can do in Southwark to tackle that issue.”

When asked by the News whether the timing of the initiative linked to next year’s council elections, Cllr John said it had “always been planned”.

In the months following the Grenfell tower disaster, many inner cities councils (including Southwark) lobbied the government for solutions to funding improvements such as sprinklers.

Southwark’s housing boss Stephanie Cryan said in July that the council will wait for recommendations of an independent review (due later this year) before making specific requests to the government for financial help.

But Cllr Cryan suggested if the review recommends that all of Southwark’s 174 tower blocks should have sprinklers, the bill could be up

to £100million.

“My worry is, if there’s no funding from Government on this, it does mean that other things will have to be put on hold or slowed down, so I’m calling on Government to either fund us for this or allow us to increase our borrowing on the housing revenue account,” Cllr Cryan said.

THE GOVERNMENT has ruled out giving cash to councils for tower block fire-safety improvements, but could offer “flexibility” to raise their own money for “essential” improvements only.

Bede Centre charity will not close despite relocation plans

BERMONDSEY CHARITY Bede House has reassured parents it is open for business as usual, despite plans to relocate its services.

The Bede Centre building in Abbeyfield Road, where the charity runs various clubs, is expected to be demolished and replaced with council housing as part of a development.

A purpose-built centre will be opened at the bottom of nearby Maydew House, where the charity will continue to run its services without any interruption.

Bede offers youth clubs for eight to nineteen-year-olds, as well as programmes for adults with learning disabilities, and works with victims of domestic violence.

Director Nick Dunne is keen to reassure parents the charity’s clubs and services are running as normal and accepting new members.

“What is sure is that the Bede Centre will not close before we have moved to the new Bede Centre in 2020,” he told the News. “There will be no pause at all in the services.

“Young people join our youth club because they want to make friends, have

fun and do stuff that interests and challenges them.

“We’ve always had a strong adventure theme to what we do, particularly during the school holidays, and get youngsters out into the countryside doing adventure activities.

“The clubs are open to anybody who wants to come but many of the young people are from low income families who would not be able to do these things and the alternative would be to be stuck at home in front of the telly and also we keep costs low so everybody can

participate.”

Bede was founded as a settlement in 1938 to work with local people to improve their lives.

The charity has two buildings; its registered offices in Bede House, on Southwark Park Road, where the administration and domestic violence team is based; and Bede Centre, on the Abbeyfield estate.

The original Bede House was purchased for £400 in 1938 with funds raised by local people.

Now, the charity needs to raise

£1.2million by 2020 to buy the 125-year lease for the new Bede Centre, equip it and pay all the extra costs associated with the move.

Mr Dunne said the charity had seen interest from a number of major funders but needed local people to help raise funds.

OK for Guinness building flats

BOROUGH: Plans to build flats on top of a Victorian housing estate have been approved.

Guinness Partnership submitted plans to build two additional floors on top of the existing historic Guinness Court buildings, in Snowsfields.

It also wants to install an external lift from ground to fourth floor level on one of the buildings.

The complex, built in 1898, is made up of three five-storey buildings – two larger and one smaller.

All three buildings were originally seven storeys in height with a mansard roof providing further residential accommodation.

The mansard was removed in the 1970s, however, leaving the buildings with flat roofs.

Guinness plans to extend the current buildings by two floors in the form of a double mansard to provide 30 residential units.

This will include 24 two-bedroom flats, two one-bedroom flats, and four three-bedroom flats.

The flats will be a mix of private sale and affordable rent.

The plans were approved at a planning committee meeting on Tuesday, October 10, subject to conditions.

Ian Wingfield becomes Southwark’s longest serving Labour councillor

‘I’m not ready to hang up my boots yet’ says cabinet member

IAN WINGFIELD has become the longest-serving Labour councillor in the history of Southwark Council, after 28 years in the job.

The current cabinet member for environment and public realm, and ward councillor for Brunswick Park in Camberwell, was elected aged 30.

Ian said: “I had my anniversary last Thursday. [Council leader] Peter John reminded me a couple of months ago, and said he would buy me dinner. “[If he’s reading this] I wouldn’t mind going to Caravaggio, that’s my favourite restaurant in Camberwell.

Or if it’s just for a drink, to the Mayflower Inn.” Ian was elected as Southwark Labour leader after the party lost power to the Liberal Democrats in 2002. He had previously been chief whip, as well as deputy leader of Southwark Council until 2016.

The 58-year-old said his journey into politics started at the age of 20, when he moved to London from Chester. After ten years of local

involvement around London, he moved to Dulwich and became a school governor. Ian said he was encouraged to stand for election by a former colleague Peter Cather, but “didn’t think I would be serving very long”.

“It’s true that in London you get a high turnaround of local councillors, but it’s important to have continuity after each election. You always need a mix of fresh blood and experienced hands, so you get new ideas coming in and people to steer and guide them,” Ian said.

“I hope I have played that role, and I think I have and that people have been appreciative. It was myself who helped to get Peter John elected into a safe seat, and Fiona Colley. Some have said that I’ve probably had the most influence on the Southwark Labour group than any single politician.

“I’ve still got a few years left in me.

I’m not ready to hang up my boots yet.”

The previous two record holders were Tony Ritchie (former council leader and mayor) and Aubyn Graham (former mayor).

Shard prepares to light up the sky

BOROUGH: The Shard’s annual festive light display is set to return on Monday, December 4, as the stop 20 storeys of the building will be illuminated.

There will be lights from dusk til early morning with one of five colours each day on rotation. Visual effects will also include patterns and sparkles.

A ‘special theme’ will also be unveiled on the first night, spokespeople have said.

Man meets Sixties musical hero after spotting him in the News

BACK IN the 1960s, it was just the gap between crowd and stage at old haunts like the Charlie Chaplin pub that kept these two men apart.

Fast forward to 2017, Charlie Jennett couldn’t believe his luck when he saw the aged but familiar face of his boyhood musical hero, Francis Campbell, looking at him from a page in the News.

Was it the same Francis from Francis and the Sapphires, whom Charlie danced, drank and sang to in his youth?

After a call to the News, Charlie couldn’t believe his luck, and a reunion was arranged Friday for the two to reminisce about the songs and nights they loved.

Charlie, 67, from Waterloo, said: “When I was eighteen my mates and I would go to the Charlie Chaplin in Elephant and Castle on Fridays and Saturdays, and we’d see Francis and the Sapphires.

“They would do all my favourite songs of the time, and ever since those days I’ve always said to my wife – Francis

SOUTHWARK PUPILS performed above the national average in their GCSE exams, provisional results have revealed.

The Department for Education released provisional GCSE results tables on Friday, ranking state-funded schools on their Progress 8 score – the new headline measure by which schools are judged.

The results show state-funded schools in Southwark performed above average in this summer’s exams, with a Progress 8 score of 0.3 compared to the national average of -0.03 – a 0.08 point improvement on last year.

Progress 8 measures pupils’ progress from their Key Stage 2 results at the end of primary, to their Key Stage 4 (GCSE) results at the end of secondary compared to others with similar primary results.

A school will fall below the new floor standard if their Progress 8 score is below -0.5, triggering an Ofsted inspection.

A score of zero means pupils in a school do, on average, about as well at Key Stage 4 as other pupils across England who got similar results at Key Stage 2.

A score above zero means pupils made more progress – and a negative score means pupils made less progress.

The 2017 exam results also included the first phase of the 0-9 numerical grading system – used only for English and maths this year – which will replace the A*-G system entirely by 2020.

In the new system, a grade 9 is the highest achievement, set above the current A* grade.

Figures show 67.4 per cent of Southwark students achieved a grade 4 (standard pass) or above in English and maths, compared to 58.5 per cent of all schools nationally.

Meanwhile, 47 per cent achieved a

grade 5 (high pass) or above compared to 39.1 per cent nationally.

The tables published by the DfE showed results for state-funded schools only, and data for some schools in Southwark was not available.

Of the Southwark schools with results published, Sacred Heart Catholic School topped the table with a Progress 8 score of 1.06, which was well above average.

Eighty per cent of students also achieved a grade 4 pass or above in GCSE English and maths, which was well above average.

St Thomas the Apostle College also ranked highly at Progress 8 with a score of 0.88, and 71 per cent of students achieved a grade 4 or above in English and maths.

Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich had a Progress 8 score of 0.83 and 65 per cent of students achieved at least a grade 4 in English and maths.

Bacon’s College had the lowest Progress 8 rating recorded in the tables for Southwark, with a score of -0.25, which fell below the national average.

Sacred Heart headteacher Serge Cefai said: “These are incredible results that our whole school community is very proud of.

“However, it is worth emphasising that they are not a flash in the pan – Sacred Heart has consistently ranked as one of the highest-achieving schools in Southwark and the whole country for many years now. We pride ourselves on our track record of high expectations and academic excellence.”

PUPILS FROM East Dulwich were presented with three gold medals by Olympian Kate French after storming their way through the first regional heats of the National Biathlon Championships.

Biathletes from James Allen’s Girls’ school competed with schools across the south east in the regional qualifying round. Each race is made up of a 50 metre swim and 800 metre run.

Sophia Sahai, who won gold in the under 10 race, said: "I was really nervous as it was my first regional.

“I was ecstatic to find out I had won the under 10s and so proud to win team gold with my team mates and best friends, Margaret and Anna."

The junior school’s under-10 team won gold, as did the senior school’s under-12 team. Impressively, the middle school also came fifth in the under-12 heat.

Ivana Tymczyszyn from the senior school, won bronze in the under-12 individual race. She was one of three girls from the school to make it to the top ten.

Ivana was also part of the gold medal winning under-12 team with teammates Hannah Sawyer and Erin Cox. The National Championships will be held in March 2018.

Rock hero and space travel at Unicorn Theatre

Unicorn Theatre, the country’s only purpose built theatre for children, which is based in Bermondsey, is putting on two productions, a rock music-enthused Beowulf, and Brave the Unknown, a sci fi space story.

Set to a metal and electro-infused live soundtrack, Chris Thorpe’s new version of classic story Beowulf, and all-conquering monster-slayer, rock star and hero, is performed by one actor. Beowulf, which contains loud music, flashing lights in parts and dry ice, is suitable for children aged 8+. It runs until November 5.

Tickets cost £8 to £12 for under eighteens and £10 to £18 for adults.

Brave the Unknown, by Bryony Hannah and Avye Leventis, is set in 2057, where Sami lives with his mum. She’s an astronaut and thinks there is a better future in space, but Sami’s life is down here. So now they face the prospect of letting go and saying goodbye, just like Laika the dog who in 1957 became the first living creature to orbit earth.

Brave the Unknown runs until November 12 and is suitable for children aged six to twelve.

Join kids’ football tournament to help young Andy walk WALWORTH

KIDS’ FOOTY teams are being invited to a huge tournament at Burgess Park, to raise money for a young lad who needs expensive surgery to help him walk.

The big kick-about on October 25 is being organised by Borough man Ricky Graham, the founder and coach of Walworth Wanderers football club.

Walworth Wanderers have “about 85 kids” who turn up every Thursday for training from 5:30pm to 7pm.

The tournament will raise money to benefit six-year-old Andy who has cerebral palsy, and is the son of Ricky’s friend Michael Wallace – the cofounder of charity ‘Kick Off at 3’.

Campaign to stop pub hotel plan

WALWORTH: Residents have mounted a campaign to stop an “important Victorian” former pub building from being transformed by a hotel firm, writes Owen Sheppard...

The age of The Hampton Court Palace in Hampton Street (now used as a hotel) is unknown. But the pub was reopened in 1983, and was designed by distinguished architect FA Powel.

Now, plans have been submitted by Ionic Hotels Ltd now wants to expand the number of rooms from 13 to 45, by adding an extra floor and building a side extension over its garage.

Jeremy Leach, chair of the Walworth Society, told the News: “What’s exceptional is that it stands out as an historic building in an area that’s undergone a lot of change, and the freeholders is now planning to remove a lot of what’s significant about the building’s design and character.

“They’re going to maintain the facades but it’s going to be really mucked up by the fact that they are going to try and squeeze an extra floor into the current building and add another floor on top.”

A spokesperson for Ionic Hotels said: “In regard to the Hampton Court Palace Hotel planning application, unfortunately the owner is unable to comment at this moment in time. However the comments raised by local residents and community interest groups have been critiqued and a formal response has been provided by the applicants planning consultants and submitted directly to the case officer at Southwark Council. The response examined the key criticisms and further justifies the principle of development on the subject site. The planning application is currently under consideration and no further comments will be provided at this moment in time.”

Kicks-off for the first games at the Burgess Park astroturf pitches in Longcroft Road will be at 10am, and the tournament continues until 5pm.

London Bridge rail staff honoured for actions during terror attack BOROUGH

LONDON BRIDGE station staff have been honoured for their actions during June’s terror attack, which may have prevented more casualties.

Network Rail workers were recognised at this year’s RailStaff Awards for their response to the attack outside the station on June 3.

Eight people were killed and many injured when three attackers drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge before getting out and stabbing people in Borough Market.

The London Bridge station team was praised for taking the decision to lock down the station rather than evacuate, which could have resulted in even more casualties.

The team also did a full sweep of the station for any suspect devices and attended to the many distressed people outside of the station, providing blankets, drinks and toilet facilities.

Members of the team collected the Station Staff of the Year award during a ceremony on October 7.

Arron Raimbault, who was working in the control room on the night of the attack, also scooped Rail Person of the Year award, with special mention given to shift station manager Adrian Suter.

“No one’s ever prepared for anything like this, but the really good thing is that we are provided with really good training, we are provided with some amazing people and amazing staff, so we’re able to deal with anything that does arise,” said Arron.

“Especially in London Bridge they come together as a family – not just in big, major incidents – but in the smallest of ways.

“Everyone here has everyone’s back and it just shows in the work that we do.”

HIS WEEK I've pressed the Home Office over the poor prosecution rates this Government have overseen for moped enabled crime.

Rotherhithe and Bermondsey have put up with a steep rise in mobile phone thefts in particular from people on mopeds which are also often stolen locally.

Coalition cuts to our police have exacerbated their ability to tackle this problem, but despite a year on year increase in moped and motorcycle related crime, and over 20,000 incidents recorded in the last twelve months, the prosecution rate is shockingly low (only 2% in Southwark).

This is the same for violent and knife crimes. The Government has lost control as it flounders over disastrous Brexit divisions and the hopeless collapse in negotiations.

Last week I hosted 'Foodbank As It Is’ in Parliament; a play written and performed by foodbank volunteers based on real experiences. Foodbank use has rocketed from 30,000 in 2010 when Labour left office to 1.4 million packages of support last year, largely due to benefit delays, chaos and cuts affecting people in and out of work.

It took 40,000 volunteers last year to run the national foodbank network - that's half the UK army! Over 7,000 parcels of support were distributed to people in Southwark, including hundreds of working people and families with young children.

Many families who I see in my weekly surgeries need not just food, but nappies and soap for example. This week, I launched an All Party Parliamentary Group on Foodbanks to highlight the rise and help tackle the underlying problems, including Lib Dem/Tory coalition policies like the Universal Credit and Bedroom Tax. I also hosted London South Bank University’s 125th anniversary celebrations last week. It was a fantastic to celebrate the incredible contribution this local institution has made, although higher tuition fees and Brexit are affecting its student numbers.

I took Borough Market traders affected by the terror attack to meet a Treasury Minister last week. It has been five months since the attack. The public, other local businesses, Southwark Council and Sadiq Khan have all helped, but the Government has not provided a penny. I am determined to improve what support is available to employers after terror attacks and to improve the publicly-funded 'Pool Reinsurance' system to ensure terrorists cannot cost UK jobs or force small traders out of business. The Government must act before another atrocity occurs.

A highlight of the week was seeing Globe Academy and City of London Academy students in Westminster. I encourage all local schools to visit and look forward to welcoming many more!

Does she really believe that putting a cycle lane in Jaimaica Road will ease congestion?

It is already the most congested road in London!

Care Home injustice I WANT to bring the injustice of care homes fee to readers’ attention.

If you are cash poor, and an elderly loved one has any property, they have to pay to go into a Care Home.

That is expected, but there is a big difference as to what you have to pay privately, as to what the council pays if they have to pay, albeit for the same service.

The council pay what they think is a fair rate to the Care Home. It is approx. £650 per week. When you pay privately, the Care Home charges you a top up fee of about £350 per week for the same service. So the council pays £650 per week, but you have to pay £1000 per week.

If you are being discharged from hospital into a Care Home under section 137 of the mental health act you do not have to pay. For some reason, when it suits, Dementia, Alzeimer etc, do not come under mental health?

Another point is that when the hospital wants to remove an elderly person because of bed blocking, they do not forget to ask if your loved ones have any assets.

They rarely tell you about your rights under section 117 of the Health act though. Section 117 is the continuous care plan, if you come under this, the NHS pays!

And in her mind the way to ease this is to take away four kilometres of road space for cyclists, which will mainly only be used by them in the rush hours.

Common sense tells you that's not going to work. There is a 24 hour bus taxi and cycle lane there already, which if cyclists actually know the Highway Code and many appear not to would be sufficient and save TfL the £55

million (at present costing, no doubt if it gets done will probably be double the estimate) it will spend on implementing it.

Also, if there is any sort of incident in the tunnel can you imagine how bad things will be along the route? None of the businesses along Jamaica Road seem to be in favour of it, according to your paper.

These findings reinforce our warning about the urgent need to reform adult social care and deliver a long-term sustainable solution that delivers a range of high quality care and support for the growing numbers of people who will need it.

While the £2 billion announced in the Spring Budget for social care was a step in the right direction, it is only one-off funding and social care services still face an annual £2.3 billion funding gap by 2020. But councils need to be given the freedom and flexibility to spend the additional funding for social care in the places where they feel it will be most effective.

It is absolutely critical that the Government uses the Autumn Budget to bring forward its consultation for social care announced in the Queen’s Speech, and that it works with local government leaders in delivering a long-term sustainable solution for social care. To tackle the problems we face tomorrow, we must start planning today.

This must address the issue of long-term funding, but it must also create the conditions necessary to ensure the development of the right kind of care and support services, that can meet the demand of an increasing number of adults with care needs.

It is very sad that Mr Parham, who is an active local Labour supporter, is not equally constructive and willing to work together rather than trying to score party political points on this most challenging subject (Letters Southwark News, 5th October, 2017).

Sadly the national financial situation when Labour lost the 2010 election and some of us had to pick up the pieces did mean a reduction in London police budgets and numbers. But the Labour Deputy Mayor for Policing has confirmed that after years of falling London crime there is not a simple causal link between the recent rise in these crimes and the reduced Met Police budget.

Mr Parham also knows that the number of prosecutions every year for knife crime or anything else is decided by the completely independent Crown Prosecution Service not by police or ministers past or present.

There is general agreement that the biggest reason for more young people now carrying knives is fear.

This is why Liberal Democrats are clear that additional funding for community policing will help, but that mentoring, conflict prevention and mediation training for all London's young people is vital.

We also need much better urgent and joint local work between all the authorities, schools, faith and youth groups and local organisations experienced in work with our children and teenagers.

We must urgently work together now.

This protects you from flu throughout the winter months and is particularly important if you are vulnerable as catching flu could lead to more serious complications for you.

This year, more people than ever can benefit from a free flu jab on the NHS. If you are one of them, don’t put off getting it – if it’s free for you, it’s because you need it. It’s quick and easy to get vaccinated and is strongly recommended by the NHS. You can get a free flu vaccination if you: • Are aged over 65 • Have a long term condition (eg diabetes, asthma) • Are a carer for someone • Work in frontline health or care services • Are a child aged between 2 and 8 • Are pregnant Children age two and three can have the vaccine at their GP surgery. Schoolage children from Reception to Year 4 will be offered it at school. For children, the flu vaccine is not an injection, it’s a nasal spray. Flu can be horrible for little children, and if they get it, they can spread it around the whole family.

Some children develop a very high fever or complications of flu, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, and may need hospital treatment, but getting them vaccinated will help prevent this.

Pregnant women are also eligible for a free jab as pregnancy naturally weakens the body’s immune system and pregnant women who get flu may be less able to fight off infections. The flu jab is the safest way to protect mother and your baby and you can have it at any stage of pregnancy.

Adults who are not eligible for a free vaccination can have the vaccination privately from a pharmacist to help them ward off common winter illnesses and stay well.

Clowning around in Canada Water ACÁ THEATRE presents Better Together, an awardnominated family clown show.

I

n 2015 it was reported that 305 people a year took their lives on the railways – approximately one every 31 Hours – hence the title of Kieran Knowles’ new play 31 Hours.

The majority of these suicides being committed by males, aged between 30 and 55, but this is never rammed down the audience’s throat, writes Susan Hallissey.

Our introduction to this world is through the eyes of four rail workers John (Abdul Salis) Ste (James Wallwork) Neil (Salavatore D’Aquilla) and Doug (Jack Sunderland). The Clean Up Team.

With a deafening train sounds and a

set filled with rubble and stones adding to the crunching effect of life, each character moves effortlessly into several others. An elderly couple played beautifully by Abdul Salis and Jack Sutherland being one of them.

We learn facts along the way: about the team and the time given for a clean up; about the name of the parts of the platform, but most despairingly about the types of jumps attempted and how so often there is no sign in that this event might take place. We also get a glimpse, through a couple of fleeting characters of the passenger’s annoyance, the inconvenience of death, along with the indignity of having no internet service!

As ‘Neil’ gives a powerful speech on ‘Man Up’ to a hushed audience I thought of my sons and grandsons, and the pressure they face being male.

As ‘Neil’ says, ‘What does “Man Up” even mean?’

However, this wasn’t just a play about male ‘jumpers’, it really covered more than the blurb suggested - The crux being communication, or lack of it. Talking about feelings, pressure and life is as important for the workers in this job as the suicides.

As we drew to the end of the play I was taken to a startling conclusion…

With more humour than expected and in a great warm and friendly venue, my only gripe was the length.

At ninety minutes long I pondered as to maybe some editing here and there – the more I reflected on this I began to wonder about my own inability to listen – to actually hear. Surely the subject matter deserves an hour and a half of anyone’s time? Make your own mind up!

Hunter’s aim is true at Playhouse

The play opens in post-war Dorset in the glorious garden of Laura Anson as her workaholic, diplomat son returns home for his annual visit.

Julian (John Sackville) feels neither contented nor successful despite devoting himself entirely to his profession in the Foreign Office.

The return of his childhood soul mate Frances Farrar (Alix Dunmore) and an unexpected turn in his career jolt him back into longing for a new start and a shot at happiness.

Originally staged at the Haymarket in 1953 this production is deftly directed by Tricia Thorns and

quintessential English mother, Susan Tracy captures the warmth of a mother’s concern for her son whilst simultaneously playing havoc with his sense of self-worth. The actors express the language of the period with a grace that makes one yearn to go back in time.

A Day by the Sea is part of Two’s Company’s rediscovery of ‘new plays from the past’ that aim to shine a spotlight on contemporary themes.

In these present times of uncertainty and political incompetence it is indeed truly illuminating. This production, combined with staging and costume, is a work of art that left me wanting to see it again the next night.

THE HORNIMAN Museum and Gardens was born out of one man’s desire to educate and give generously to the community.

Frederick John Horniman (18351906) began collecting objects, specimens and artefacts to do with natural history as a young boy and continued to do so into his adult years.

The Victorian tea trader and philanthropist, whose family owned Horniman Tea Company, wanted to share his collection with the public and show them things they might never see from all over the world.

Part of his home in London Road, Forest Hill, which became known as Surrey House Museum, was opened to the general public on December 24, 1890, and as time went on he opened up more and more.

The museum’s first curator was Alfred Cort Haddon, followed by Richard Quick.

Arrangements were made so that schools, societies and clubs could visit and every visitor was supplied with a free hand guide catalogue to help them examine and interpret the objects on display.

“Obviously it was a hugely generous thing, him wanting to open his house to the public - and the museum,” said Horniman Museum chief executive Janet Vitmayer CBE. “He had a Quaker upbringing which we think helped shape his concern for the poor and for education.

“He had that desire to share and educate and give people opportunity.”

Horniman was dedicated to making sure local people could visit and

view his collection, and even opened especially on Wednesday afternoons so the shop girls in Forest Hill could look around, Ms Vitmayer explained.

“There’s a nice quote about him saying he wanted to give those whose circumstances had prevented them from visiting distant lands the opportunity to see the wonderful things that he had seen,” said Ms Vitmayer.

“There were quite a lot of newspaper articles about Frederick while he was alive and the City Leader in 1895 described him as a ‘light-hearted and generous man’.”

In 1893, Horniman built an extension onto the museum to accommodate the growing collection, and the adjoining gardens were officially opened to the public on June 1, 1895.

In 1898, he decided to pay for a purpose-built museum to house his collections. The old museum was closed on January 29, 1898, and demolished in the May. When the new museum building was completed, Horniman donated the museum, collections and adjoining grounds as a free gift to the people.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens story continues today as it prepares to open its World Gallery in 2018 – a £3.3million Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project.

The gallery will provide an anthropology display exploring ‘what it means to be human’ with more than 3,000 objects telling stories from ancient cultures to the present day.

“We have some extraordinary material and the World Gallery is very much a reflection of that for people to see things they probably will never see,” said Ms Vitmayer.

The Phoenix of Catford

THE CATFORD BRIDGE Tavern is a grand old pub that was sadly gutted by fire a while back. Six months ago, however, it had a grand Phoenix-like reopening after the community got together to ensure its safe future, writes Michael Holland...

Being such a big pub you can sit and quite happily watch the football in one area, dine finely in another, sit in comfortable chairs reading or playing board games with friends and family in a quiet corner, or take in the fresh air on the large terrace, and all without your space being disturbed by another.

Myself and Nina were led by manager Catriona to a booth that offered views over the restaurant section, the open kitchen and the terrace, and she also handed us a gin and beer list. Nina opted for the Opihr Oriental Spiced Gin with tonic, while I had a Langunitas IPA, a draught ale with plenty of taste.

The menu is kept short and to the point: a meat, a fish and a vegetarian option, with specials changing every week. I like that idea as I am prone to getting bogged down when there are too many choices. We began with the Whitebait and Risotto Balls to share. There is little to say about the little fish other than they were crunchy and fishy. Perfect. Plus, the crispy balls of parmesan, basil and rice worked well with the pesto.

Catriona told us how the Catford Bridge Tavern was resurrected from the ashes with help from the local council and people to become the community hub that it is now. It looked like it was doing its job as there were families there (Father and son playing Backgammon), couples dining, and a few people watching Liverpool get the better of Leicester.

Our server Katie brought our main courses. Nina had the Aged Beef Burger that came with really excellent hand-cut, skin on French Fries. The medium rare beef was right up her boulevard. I know that because all I could hear was the occasional ‘Hmmm’ as she got stuck into it. She paired that with a robust Trashumante Garnacha, a Spanish red that ticked all the right boxes.

I had the Chicken with Black Cabbage and Brown and White Beans. I do love a good pulse and these were good pulses.

The chicken, though, was truly delicious; it was moist and fell away from the bone at the slightest touch, and went nicely with a citrussy Muscadet.

After all those chips and all those beans we were quite full so decided to defer dessert for a while and sat discussing the merits of the meal over our wines. ‘This red is delicious,’ said Nina before

praising the beef, the fries and the salad dressing.

Some time passed before we felt ready to share the Chocolate Fondant with Salted Caramel Ice Cream. The deferred gratification served us well as we both enjoyed it all the more. Everything about it was good, except that I lost the battle of the spoons - Nina beat me to most of the ice cream and caramel sauce!

I need to up my game when it comes to sharing desserts.

Being right next to two stations, visiting The Catford Bridge Tavern was like finding a goldmine to us as we now know we can jump on a train and partake in their tempting midweek Steak Nights and two burgers for £12.50 Mondays.

Bringing this pub back to life was a good thing because it is a valuable asset to the

community and all that use it.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that because of works

by L R Lima Construction ltd, it intends, to make an Order the effect of which will prohibit vehicular traffic in part of the above named road.

DOCKLANDS UNDER-13S kept up their impressive start to the season with a thumping 13-0 cup win over Danson Park Black to see them through to the next round. Man of the match and captain Joe Ryan scored his first of the season as his side ran riot.

The under-8s were back to winning ways with two convincing victories over club Langley Claws: 4-1 and 31. Ethan Maxwell (3) Lenny Davis (3) and Oliver Matson (1) got the goals, with the latter two sharing the man-of-the-match award.

FISHER ARE out of the Kent Reliance Senior Trophy after a first-round loss to Cray Valley last weekend.

FISHER UNDER-7s went down to their first league defeats this season. They lost 5-0 in the first game against Welling Red and 21 in the second game. Man of the match was Finlay Linihan.

The under-8s lost narrowly to Blackheath, Mohammed Essal with the goal in a 2-1 defeat.

However, the responded by winning first-ever Selkent B league game 3-0 with Emmanuel de Marcos, Essal and Lennie kavanagh scoring the goals in a fine performance.

Adekite Fatuga-Dada scored the only goal of the game to hand the Lionesses their first loss since their FA Cup defeat to Bristol in March.

Burch made a number of changes to his side but expected a better result.

He said: “It was disappointing, we expected to come here and go away with a win. Unfortunately we didn’t do that.

“Fair play to Watford, they played well and shaded it. There was a little bit more desire from them at times.

“We made six or seven changes, the girls that came in did well but some of them looked like they hadn’t played in a while, which is to be expected.

“Overall, we know we’re better than that and hopefully we’ll go away and use it positively. It hurts but we have to bounce back.”

Millwall are not back in league action until October 28.

“It’s not ideal now to have a couple of weeks’ break. We’ll look to get a friendly before we go to London Bees,” Burch said.

“We need to make sure that everything that went wrong we fix, that we take our best foot forward and go into the Bees game like we have the previous ones.

“It’s three games in seven days so it’s going to be a tough week with Arsenal and the Bees again in the cup. That will be another opportunity to rotate and give players the chance to play. I’m looking forward to using the squad for that week and going forward.”

Clunis double lifts rampant Hamlet up to second DULWICH HAMLET made another convincing statement about their ambitions this season with a rampaging 4-0 win over Harlow Town on Tuesday night.

After Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Staines Town left them in fourth place in the Bostick League Premier Division table, this was a fifth clean sheet in six games to move them up to second, level on points with Hendon, though Leiston and Billericay do have games in hand.

After successive losses in league and cup games in September, this

was also a fifth win in six fixtures, and Gavin Rose’s side look like they are set for a sustained promotion challenge this season.

Nyren Clunis’ double, as well as a first goal for Reise Allassani and one from Michael Chambers gave Hamlet an emphatic win in front of 552 fans at Champion Hill.

The home side could have gone ahead in the fourth minute when after Sanchez Ming had been fouled Chambers met Ashley Carew’s freekick but couldn’t direct his header on target.

It was an open game and Harlow almost got their noses in front when Hamlet goalkeeper Preston Edwards was beaten at a corner but Carew was there to sweep the ball off the line.

Ibrahim Kargbo then tested Harlow stopper Ashlee Jones with a fierce drive, before Dulwich went in front in the sixteenth minute. It came from a quick break following Marc Weatherstone’s excellent tackle. He found Clunis wide on the left and the attacker did the rest as he drove inside before firing a superb effort past Jones into the top corner.

Ming went close to doubling the advantage as Dulwich attacked with pace and intent, but the hosts didn’t have to wait long for a second, Carew’s corner headed on by Weatherstone and the ball flicked off Chambers and into the back of the net.

There was an element of luck about that but not about their third. Clunis was again involved, this time turning provider ten minutes after the break when he found Allassani for a neat finish on the turn.

for the visitors but a fourth arrived for Rose’s side in the last minute. It was all the work of Clunis, who dispossessed Jide Maduako on the halfway line before he outpaced the away defence and shot low past Jones to add a final flourish to a classy personal and team performance.

Hamlet will be looking to continue their recent excellent run, and possibly claim top spot in the league table, when they face Burgess Hill Town at Champion Hill on Saturday.

Cheeseman eyeing British title after eighth knockout win

BERMONDSEY’S TED Cheeseman moved his professional record to 11-0 with a stunning fifth-round knockout of Aristides Quintero last weekend.

At York Hall, Cheeseman notched up the eighth stoppage win of his career when he followed a right uppercut with a flurry of punches to send the Panamanian fighter to the canvas. Quintero, a late call-up, never had a chance of beating the count.

Cheeseman, 22, will now be aiming to add the British super-welterweight title to the English version he won in July when he defeated Matthew Ryan.

Cheeseman was always on the front foot against Quintero, sniping in the

shots as his opponent struggled to make an impact.

Quintero’s defensive guard weakened as a relentless Cheeseman didn’t let up, and when he caught the Spanish-based fighter with a straight right in the fifth that was the end of the contest.

Cheeseman could take an eliminator to challenge for the British superwelterweight title, which is held by Liam Williams.

"I'm not the type to be scared of anyone, when Tony [Sims] thinks I am ready, and Eddie [Hearn] and Charlie [Sims] think I am ready," he told Sky Sports.

"Whoever they put in front of me I'd never say no."

Michael Asaolu led the Legends’ scoring with sixteen points as three of the five starters scored in double figures. Jermaine Thompson had twelve points, Nelson Adetuyole and Paul Yusuff had ten each and Joel Turay had a standout effort off the bench with fourteen points and eight rebounds.

After the Legends jumped out to a 227 lead, they closed out the half 38-19 on top and never trailed for the rest of the game. The Legends under-16 side will now take a two-week break before an away game at Thurrock Hornets on November 5.

Kou for Lynn as Jacob takes belt LYNN AC Boxing were successful in four of their six bouts at their annual dinner show at the Royal Lancaster Hotel last weekend.

Jacob Koutouan won the Alliance Challenge belt at welterweight after a unanimous points decision against Bradley Temple from Moor Lane ABC. Lynn coach Terry Pearson said: “Jacob boxed superbly. He was probably the best fighter on the night. It was a really close bout.

Both boys went into it with unbeaten records.

“Jacob won unanimously, he won every round. It was a very good contest. We had four wins out of six on the night, all on points”.

Romaine Sawyers scored his first goal of the season to give the Bees a first win at home in the league this season.

Millwall, meanwhile, are still waiting for their first Championship win on the road since February 2015.

While they only had themselves to blame after Lee Gregory missed a penalty with ten minutes left, referee Lee Probert could take a fair share of it, too.

Probert blew his whistle for that spotkick a split-second before Gregory found the back of the net after Jed Wallace had been fouled. Gregory went left with his strike, and so did Dan Bentley who saved an eighth penalty in 21 attempts.

Although Bentley is only 24, he actually made his debut in a Southend side that contained Neil Harris. The Lions boss said afterwards Bentley was a Premier League goalkeeper and his late save enhanced that feeling.

Gregory has shown bottle before after missing from twelve yards, notably last season after two late fluffed attempts at

Oldham. He scored two penalties in the next two games, both winners.

Millwall’s frontmen need to find scoring form. This was a fifth blank in twelve league games this season.

Gregory has scored twice, one from play. Tom Elliott, back from injury on Saturday after six games out with a quad problem, has one Championship goal.

Steve Morison, now sidelined with a stomach tear, has yet to score.

Aiden O’Brien was pushed up front alongside Gregory at Griffin Park, but that means Millwall don’t have the same presence in the air that Morison brings.

Elliott came on in the second half and Harris was pleased with how Millwall responded to going behind just after the half-time break, even if he admitted he didn’t want to praise the players too much after a defeat.

Millwall can now ill-afford to lose another player, with three from the spine of their first-choice team out injured. It was always going to be the risk running with a small first-team squad, but Millwall suddenly look stretched.

Jake Cooper was always likely to get his chance and he is a more than adequate replacement for Byron Webster.

The Lions, though, have no one like Shaun Williams or Morison. Williams brings that calmness to midfield, and

Morison is the figurehead of the side.

Elliott has shown that he has the quality to make an impact, but he isn’t a leader in the way Morison is. Not yet anyway.

Bentley was ultimately the difference between the sides. Earlier on Gregory shot just wide of his post, before the goalkeeper produced two excellent saves. First he kept out Shane Ferguson before palming Gregory’s shot away.

Then came the penalty controversy, and Harris was unhappy that Probert blew so quickly after Wallace went down and Gregory swept the loose ball past Bentley.

Bees boss Dean Smith, however, was also displeased with the referee: “I'm not even sure it was a foul, let alone inside the box. If it was in the box it was offside anyway, but there were a lot of decisions that raised eyebrows.

“When you play against a side as physical and aggressive as Millwall you need some protection and you expect some degree of consistency.”

Harris felt his side should have been awarded two other penalties, one for handball and another when Shaun Hutchinson was impeded. Harris said: “When the penalty comes, he gives it instantly to make up for it. Unless the rules have changed you can play advantage in the box.”

Harris did concede there would have been no need for a conversation about the referee had Gregory scored from the spot. And where the referee was inconsistent Harris has been consistent in refusing to accept plaudits for performances that don’t yield points.

This was a display when they again matched an established Championship side for long spells. But they couldn’t match the quality of Sawyers’ finish, a fierce low drive from outside the box.

Injuries and a lack of goals have surely increased the need to add to the squad in January. Until then, it’s fingers crossed no more players end up in the treatment room.

TOM ELLIOTT has been getting tips to help improve his Millwall performances – from one of his rivals for a starting place in the team.

Elliott revealed his spot in the dressing room is beside Steve Morison’s, and his older team-mate is passing on advice based on his vast experience in the game.

Elliott could take Morison’s place in the side this weekend against Birmingham, with Millwall’s captain struggling with a muscle tear in his stomach.

“He won’t sit me down for ten minutes saying, ‘do this, do this, do this’,” Elliott explained. “He knows I’ve got experience, but he’ll give me tips here and there.

“He knows what it’s all about, he’s had a very good career. Little things like when I go for the ball with a defender I’ll predominantly try to beat him in the air, but if you see Moro he’ll give the defender a little nudge and sometimes you don’t have to even jump.

“There is other stuff as well when we’re in the gym, about looking after my body.

“The gaffer and Gregs [Lee Gregory] also give me tips and that’s only going to help my game.

“I couldn’t ask for a better dressing room to help me settle in. The boys are quality. I think I’m coming out of my shell and people are seeing the real me now. A lot of that is down to the boys.

“The fans have welcomed me as well. I just need to keep going and improving. My next target is to get more game time and more goals.”

Elliott had scored three times in six games this season before a quad injury caused him to miss six fixtures.

It was all the more frustrating for the former AFC Wimbledon striker as he would have got a chance to start a first league game for the club after Gregory’s three-match ban for a red card against QPR. Elliott had picked up the injury in innocuous fashion in training before Millwall’s game at Wolves, and he is keen to make up for lost time, assuring Neil Harris he is ready to replace Morison.

“I was devastated because I wanted to make an impact, break into the team and play more minutes,” Elliott said.

“Gregs got sent off a week later, and I was like, ‘aargh!’. But that’s football, you’ve just got to look at the positives and hopefully I’ll get my chance soon.

“If it had been my left leg I would have been fine because I never use it.

I’m probably not going to be trying any 40-yard attempts on goal anytime soon.

“I feel good, I just need to get my sharpness back. I’ve only trained for a week or so but that’ll come back with games.

“We’ve been a force at The Den this season, bar the last game. Hopefully we can replicate how well we’ve played there at times and get back to winning ways.

“We’ve got good wide players who get the ball into the box and aerial ability is one of my strengths. That’s what I thrive off so this is a good team for me to play in.”

SHANE FERGUSON was part of a Birmingham squad that survived relegation once – now he’s gunning to take them down at The Den this weekend.

Ferguson had two spells on loan at the club, the first in 2012-13 and the second the following season when their relegation fight went all the way to the last day. They needed at least a draw at Bolton, and after going 2-0 down came back and equalised in the 93rd minute through Paul Caddis.

This Blues season seemed to going a similar way under Harry Redknapp, before he was sacked. New boss Steve Cotteril oversaw a 1-0 win over Championship leaders Cardiff City in his first game in charge last weekend.

Birmingham have sold out their allocation for this Saturday’s fixture, and Ferguson has fond memories of their fans and of his time there.

“I loved it. I went twice and it was great,” Ferguson said. “The second time there was a lot more pressure on us, we were fighting to stay in the league and it went down to the last day of the season.

“It was a fantastic way to stay up, scoring with the last kick of the game. I have some great friends there and great memories I’ll never forget.

“I was young at the time and learning and it was about going there to get game

time.

“They have brilliant fans. When I was there the stadium was nearly always packed. Even when they were going through hard times they always turned up to support their team.

“It’s the way it goes sometimes when there is a new manager, it gives a boost and sides start picking up results. It’ll be tough and we’ve got to make sure we’re

Millwall go into the game on the back of successive league defeats, but Ferguson is confident in how they are playing.

He said: “There are some games this season we could have nicked three points or held on for a point. We know we’re playing the right way and causing teams lots of problems.

“We’re taking confidence from that and we want to keep that going for the rest of the season.”

Carsley’s last game ended in a 6-1 defeat to Hull, but Cotterill was able to quickly instil some defensive resilience as Birmingham defeated league leaders Cardiff 1-0 last weekend.

Cotterill wants his side to continue their improvement against Millwall, as he hinted how he wants them to eventually play.

“It was a real statement beating Cardiff City, who are a very good team. It's important we build upon this result. I am very proud of the team and what they have done for me over the last two weeks.

“As time goes on, the longer I am at the

football club, I would want us to probably control the game a little bit more.

“We have some exciting young talent in the side and now we now have to look to improving our league position. I would like us to be a higher tempo team and show promotion form.

“In time we will hopefully want the opposition to press us, we will want them to come on to us. That’s going to take a bit of time, though.”

It’s more likely they will sit back against Millwall, something that worked well against Cardiff, who had more shots inside the 18-yard box than any side

before last weekend, before Birmingham didn’t allow them a single effort on goal.

Millwall have failed to score in five of their twelve Championship games this season, and could again be without last season’s top scorer Steve Morison.

Lions boss Neil Harris has the option

of playing Tom Elliott, Fred Onyedinma or Aiden O’Brien up front alongside Lee Gregory, who will be looking to put last weekend’s penalty miss at Brentford behind him. He scored two winners in consecutive games following a double penalty miss at Oldham last season.

Those selection decisions up front will mean another one on the left wing. If Harris decides to go with the more robust Elliott or Onyedinma then it will be Shane Ferguson or O’Brien on the left of midfield.

In defence, Jake Cooper will continue alongside Shaun Hutchinson, captain in the absence of Morison and the out-offavour Tony Craig.

Despite the game being on TV, Birmingham have sold their full allocation and will fill out the top tier of the away end.

Millwall’s record against Birmingham is appalling. They have won just one of the last sixteen games between the clubs going back to 1996, though the last victory was in their last meeting, 1-0 in February 2015 – the Lions’ last away win in the Championship.

Despite losing to Germany two weeks ago, McLaughlin produced one of the most memorable moments of the game with a double nutmeg on Julian Draxler and Marvin Plattenhardt that was an online hit.

And Ferguson revealed his team-mate has been dining out on it ever since.

“He keeps playing it in the changing room! He’s showing everyone, he was watching the video after the game. I’m sure he won’t stop talking about it for a long time.

“Conor is very good on the ball, very calm. He’s Steady Eddie and you always know what you’re going to get from him.

“George is a confident lad and he slotted straight in. He did really well and the lads took to him. The manager [Michael O’Neill] really likes him as well so it’s great for George.

“It was a massive achievement to get to the play-offs and to be just two games away from the World Cup. “It comes down to whoever turns up in those two games. We’re really looking forward to it. We’ve worked really hard to get into this position and we don’t want to lose it now.

“We seem to do a lot better when we are underdogs, Northern Ireland and Millwall. It’s like The Den, a lot of teams probably don’t like coming to Windsor Park. It’s a great atmosphere and we seem to do really well at home. That’s going to be important for us.”

“It’s down to the dressing room, I don’t think it’s down to me,” Harris said. “I stepped in after Oldham to say about two penalties being taken: is it right for the same player to take the second one? That’s a grey area.

“I thought Lee struck the penalty really well at the weekend and it was a good save. Was it a mental thing in that he had just had a goal disallowed? He’s had the ref and the centre-half messing about, and the time between the award of the penalty and actually taking it was a hell of a long time. The ref didn’t have control of the situation.

“Lee maybe wasn’t 100 per cent mentally right for the kick.

“It’ll be a decision on the pitch at the time. Lee was chomping at the bit to take it, he had struck some really good ones in training on Friday.

“It’ll be the players’ decision and Lee’s decision.”

Tom Elliott, meanwhile, has said he will put his hand up to take a spotkick the next time his side are given one.
