The disabled Bermondsey schoolgirl’s plight melts your heart and considering that the Peckham Lido managed to get nearly £16,000 on the crowdfunding site in just six days, you’d hope that a similar amount of people put their hands in their pockets for Ruby.

Harris and the boys can get us to Wembley

W

E ARE on the brink of getting back to Wembley for the fourth time in a decade.

If there is no stumble on Friday night in the second leg of the play-off semi-final with Bradford then the legendary status of Neil Harris the manager will be secured in the place of Lions’ fans’ hearts along with Neil Harris the playing legend.

After a disastrous season last year the Lions found themselves in the third division with most fans struggling to see a coherent way forward – our lowest ebb in years.

The club had lost its identity. So who were we going to call?

The answer lay within and despite a rocky start with four losses in a row at home in August ,‘Bomber’ Harris showed that his aura as a leading player could translate into moulding a squad with the values he demands players demonstrate every time they step onto the pitch.

Harris brought in people he trusts, like club captain Tony Craig and his old strike partner Steve Morison, and in the last few months they rose up the league on the back of performances that contained the grit, the spirit, the determination and never-say-die attitude he said he would foster.

Now for the first time this season The Den is completely sold out for this crucial battle.

MUSCLE-BOUND men and women will compete this Saturday at the first ever Dulwich Strongman competition, being put on to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital .

The four category and six exercise event will see competitors pull cars, lift logs and boulders as well as go head-to-head in the duck walks (walking whilst squatting).

The event is organised by Dulwich College fitness instructor Stephen Hill, who aims to raise £2,000 for charity each year.

Stephen said: “We’ve raised about £1,000 so far for Great Ormond Street Hospital. It’s a cause quite close to me as my cousin’s sons both have kidney disease.

“My cousin donated one of his kidneys to one of them but his other son still needs one. They both visit Great Ormond Street Hospital once a month for checks ups.

“The father will be competing this weekend with his boys in front row seats to cheer him on which will be great. It took about a week to organise. I was just sitting in the gym watching about 40 people workout and thought to myself a competition would be a good idea.”

The event takes place on May 21 at 12pm at Dulwich College Sports Club’s race track and is expected to last four hours.

On the day Stephen will also be selling cakes, bacon rolls and t-shirts to raise further funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Pranksters jailed for fake art heist Gallery visitors ‘terrified’ by stunt

TWO SOUTHWARK pranksters have been jailed with three others after staging fake art gallery heists at the Tate Britain and National Portrait galleries last year.

The five men from the Trollstation YouTube channel were banged up for a total of seven years for the two stunts that terrified unsuspecting art lovers.

Members of the public had been milling through the National Portrait Gallery on July 5 last year, when the five men burst in at 3.30pm.

They wore masks while carrying prop portraits, intended to make guests believe they were stolen from the gallery. CCTV footage shows a stampede of gallery goers darting for the exit as the “outrageous” men held the fake paintings above their heads.

The Trollstation pranksters’ YouTube channel has attracted over 720,000 subscribers with over 200 videos published since 2014. About 40,000 of those subscribers were gained just in the last month.

The gang moved onto the Tate Britain later that day, and held a fake kidnapping. Four of the five men were arrested on the day of the incidents for public order offences, and pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1986, namely causing fear and provocation of violence.

The five were sentenced on Monday,

May 16, at City of London Magistrates’ Court.

Ebenezer Mensah, 29, of Sumner Road in Peckham, was jailed for a total of eighteen weeks for his role in the National Portrait Gallery and Tate gallery heists, while Dan Lee, 31, of Belham Walk in Camberwell was jailed in March for twelve weeks for taking part in the National Portrait Gallery prank.

Daniel Jarvis, 27, of Whitehill Road in Gravesend was jailed for a total of 20 weeks for his involvement in both incidents. Endrit Ferizolli, 20, of Wakemans Hill Avenue in Brent will spend his sixteen weeks for involvement in both incidents at a Youth Offending Institute. Helder Gomes, 23, of Grantham Road in Lambeth, was jailed for a total of eighteen weeks for taking part in both hoaxes.

Detective Constable Anthony Parker, from the Met's Public Order Crime Team, said: “The actions of these five men was outrageous. To go into busy public places wearing masks shouting and screaming at a time of heightened awareness of the terrorism threat facing the UK is deplorable.

“The group terrified those visiting the galleries. It is only by pure chance that no one was injured or suffered serious health issues as they fled in what the judge described as a ‘stampede’.

“All five men now have a number of weeks in jail to consider just how unfunny their stunts actually were.”

A ‘POSH’ Millwall supporter from Bermondsey became an internet sensation last week after he mentioned the club on ITV gameshow The Chase.

Joe Hames, donning a tweed jacket and tie, surprised viewers on the daytime quiz show on Wednesday, May 11, when he said he supported Millwall FC. He said: “I’m really into theatre and I like to go see football.” When asked who he goes to see, Joe replied: “Well I live in Bermondsey so I follow Millwall. I’m a typical Millwall fan of course.”

Joe went head to head with chaser Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett in his first go, securing £6,000.

Amused fans then took to social media and made an attempt to find him while Joe and fellow contestant Tom stormed to the final chase with £12,000, but were caught with nine seconds left and lost it all.

The Association of Millwall Supporters tweeted: “Does anyone sit

next to #PoshJoe? Let’s find Posh Joe.” Another fan said: “If we get to Wembley can I get a lift in the limo?

While @cox_51 tweeted: “Joe on #TheChase is a llllllad who probably drives a jjjjjag.”

The News managed to track down Joe and talk about his fifteen minutes of fame.

“One of the main things about the responses I received was that 75 per cent were nice and the other 25 per cent were not so nice. I wasn’t so bothered by the not so nice ones,” he said.

“What was really nice was that people saw Millwall as different to what the club is normally perceived as.

“A lot of people were saying ‘Joe is the poshest fan we’ve ever seen’ but the support base is quite broad now. It is a great community club and a great family club.

“I live in this community and that is why I like the club. The idea that it is just for skinheads and racists is out of date. I watched the episode in the pub with some work mates and found all the responses hilarious.”

The son of a carpenter and an NHS nurse, Joe moved to the borough fourteen months ago.

Joe’s fans will have to wait before they see him again though, as unfortunately he will not be at Wembley on Friday.

AN AYESLBURY Estate mum of three has told the News she feels too frightened to leave her flat after being burgled last week.

Donna Saxby, 36, said she is certain her Wolverton flat was being watched, after thieves broke in while she was away enjoying the sunny weather with her kids last Thursday.

Donna, who was granted the flat by Southwark Council as temporary accommodation, said: “We’re all terrified now. I left at 12pm and we came back at 4pm to find they had nearly cleared the place.”

Among the valuable items missing from the flat were two PlayStation 4s, two Ipads, three watches, a pair of Beats headphones, two of her children’s rucksacks, and her son’s Xbox.

She says she is terrified for her children.

“They even went through my daughter’s knicker drawer. It’s disgusting, my daughter was shocked,” Donna said.

“But I think they might have been disturbed, because there were a lot of other things they could have taken. My neighbour said she called over at 1.30pm because she saw the doors were open, so they might have been scared off.

“But it shows they came and did it less than an hour and a half after we left.

That’s why I’m convinced they were watching.

“We also think there was more than one of them, and they broke out of the bedroom door on the ground floor. I

reckon someone would have seen them, it’s really exposed all at the front of Wolverton.”

Officers believe the crooks broke in after jumping over her back garden and breaking in through her living room window. It appears they originally tried to enter through her adjacent kitchen window, only to find it protected by reinforced glass.

Donna now says she feels too scared to leave the house for fear they will try again.

“My friend is now taking my kids to school in Bermondsey. I don’t want to leave, I’m terrified they will just try and break in again,” she said.

“The police who came over say this happens constantly around here. The officer came over was visiting another flat just after me.”

Police have said they signed into one of the PlayStations, which could lead them to locate the suspects, but Donna says she waited more than six hours before police arrived. “They said give it a week and they will try and trace the IP addresses on our laptops, but they will be long gone by then. Honestly I bet we will find most of it down the market if we ever see it again.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, said: “The break-in must have been very distressing for Ms Saxby and we have been as quick as possible in first securing the broken windows temporarily at 10pm on day she was burgled – this is treated as an emergency repair, then getting the glazing ordered. As the glazing needs to be measured and ordered, this can take a few days. ” Police confirmed the details of the incident, and are appealing for anyone with helpful information to call 101.

A DISABLED Bermondsey schoolgirl may soon be able to tell her family she loves them for the first time, as a campaign to raise money for a computer to help her speak gathers momentum.

Ruby Longman, a pupil at Alfred Salter Primary School, suffers from the rare Rett syndrome, which has prevented her from walking and talking since she was a baby.

Now ten-years-old, her family are determined to get an eyegaze computer to help Ruby talk through her eyes and finally have a voice of her own.

It is possible to apply for the computer on the NHS but Timi said it could take anywhere between “two and three years”.

More than £2,500 has already been donated by friends and family, but £10,000 is needed in total to get the computer to suit all of Ruby’s needs.

Timi Samples, Ruby’s mum, said: “When I heard how many people had already donated I was surprised and couldn’t stop crying.

“To see people raising so much money is a nice thing – to see people care.

“It is really hard to ask for help as a family. We are very independent and are used to getting on with it ourselves.

“We were worried about doing it as it can be frightening but the response has settled our fears.

“We have heard from family and friends who we have not heard from in a long time. One cousin rang me who I last saw when she was turning 21 - she’s 45 now - saying she will be donating in the next two weeks.”

As Ruby cannot walk, Timi and a carer have had to carry her up and down stairs everyday, which has started to take its toll, with Timi missing two discs in her lower back.

Speaking about how difficult it was when Ruby was first diagnosed, Timi said the family went through a “really big grieving period” as they felt she was slowly passing away.

But the thought of being able to communicate with Ruby after so long has filled both her parents and sister with

Lilly-Rose, Ruby’s thirteen-year-old sister, said: “I don’t know what I will do when I hear her talk. I will probably just cry. I would ask her what it is like for her - for her to finally be able to talk to us.”

Ruby lost the ability to talk when she was diagnosed at two and half years old and with time lost her ability to show emotion.

But she still has control of her eyes and the chance to talk with the help of a computer that will track her gaze.

Larry Longman, Ruby’s dad, said: “It is going to be really weird for me because I have not heard her in so long. It is really important to have a voice in this day and age, so it would be amazing.”

Rett syndrome is a unique condition that affects one in ten thousand females, with Ruby being one of two young girls suffering from the disease in the borough.

Last week the News reported that young model Harvey Eldred, seven, had donated £100 of his pocket money to both Ruby and Harvey Brown, seven, who suffers from Morquio syndrome.

Wandle ‘working with lawyers’ after telling residents flats will be demolished EXCLUSIVE

THE CONSTRUCTION firm that built four blocks of flats in Peckham, ordered for demolition six years after being built was dissolved on May 3, the News can reveal.

Independent investigators discovered “significant problems” such as water damage in the four blocks of flats in Solomon’s Passage, owned by Wandle Housing Association. Blocks 42 and 44 will be demolished and rebuilt, while 40 and 46 will be refurbished.

Residents in all 85 affected flats were informed on April 25, and given eighteen months to bid for other Wandle flats around London to stay in temporarily. Leaseholders have been offered a chance to sell their flats back to Wandle with a ten per cent uplift.

The News can now reveal that Blocks 42, 44 and 46 were built by Green Acre Homes (South East) Limited, a Beckenham construction company that went into administration in September 2011, and was dissolved on May 3 of this year. The company’s last chairman before it ceased to exist three weeks ago, was George Solomon Aldersley, aged 73.

The News was unable to locate a representative for Green Acre Homes (South East) Ltd. A spokesman for Wandle told the News: “We are currently in discussions with the National Housing Building Council regarding Solomon’s Passage.

“The original developer, Green Acre Homes (South East) Limited, went into administration in August 2011. We are working with our lawyers following the construction experts' report into the buildings at Solomon’s Passage.”

Wandle say they notified residents in October that extra fire alarms and fire wardens have been deployed on site as a result of the investigation by Building Research Establishment.

Peckham and Camberwell MP Harriet has confirmed that six residents have asked her for support, and she has since written to Wandle on their behalf.

Teenager slashed in Walworth

WALWORTH: A seventeen-yearold boy was slashed in a knife fight on Tuesday.

The teenager was discovered by London Ambulance Service paramedics in Cooks Road, by Napier House, with slash wounds to his head and arm.

Police arrived at 4.46pm before the boy was taken to hospital. His injuries were not life threatening and he is thought to be in a stable condition.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help with their enquiries. Anyone who was at the location in Cooks Road, near the junction with Olney Road and Maddock Way should contact police on 101.

A MILLWALL fan was awarded a British Empire Medal on May 12 for his outstanding poppy selling efforts.

Sean McCarthy, a familiar face to Lion’s fans, takes two weeks’ holiday off work each year to run the stand outside Cannon Street station, usually from October 28 to November 11. He has raised around £278,000 over seventeen years.

As well as selling poppies, Sean sells unique badges each year featuring Millwall Lions that are popular among fans.

Sean, an HGV driver, made a personal best of £65,000 in 2015 alone, and in recognition of his commitment to the British Legion he was recommended for the medal given for civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown and received it at Penshurst Place, an historic stately home in Kent.

Sean said: “It went really well.

When you do this charity work you don’t do it for awards you do it for the British soldiers.

“Without them we wouldn’t be here. It only takes two weeks a year to raise money for them and compared to what they go through it’s nothing.

“I would like to say thank you to the Millwall fans who bought poppies from me all these years. If it wasn’t for them I would not be able to hit these targets I keep getting.

“I’d also like to thank Millwall Football Club for letting me sell on the football ground. If it wasn’t for them I would not be able to raise as much.”

Man who fed dogs chocolate sentenced DULWICH

A DULWICH man who fed his dogs chocolate and milk has been banned from keeping animals for life after he was found guilty of offences under the Animal Welfare Act.

Keith Davis, 62, of Glengary Road, fed his two collies, Jenny and Lolly, digestive biscuits, Kit-Kats and milk possibly contributing to both their deaths, Camberwell

Green Magistrates’ Court heard.

Davis was given a prison sentence of 112 days suspended for twelve months for failing to provide both dogs with an appropriate diet, and not providing Jenny with a suitable environment or veterinary care for signs of ill health.

The RSPCA were alerted last April after Jenny was taken to a charity in a bad way before dying.

They then visited Davis’s home where they found Lolly in a similar way, who had to be put to sleep as

she had developed liver and kidney failure.

RSPCA inspector Callum Isitt said: “Despite being extremely unwell, these poor dogs had not been taken to a vet for treatment and were instead left to suffer until they died.

“Owning an animal is a privilege and we are very pleased that in this instance this man will not be able to own one again - which I have no doubt will prevent suffering to future animals.”

Splash the cash for the Lido

CAMPAIGNERS HOPING to revive the historic Peckham Lido have said they feel “bowled over” by £16,000 that has already been pledged in just six days.

The once proud Olympic-length 50 metre pool was mounded over in 1987.

But an online crowdfunding page has attracted 413 backers, and hopes to raise £65,865 by July 31.

The initial splash of funding will pay to assemble planning applications and businesses plans to be submitted to Southwark Council.

Campaign founder, Ben Lloyd-Ennals, said: “Peckham like the rest of London is changing so quickly right now. It's essential we harness this great energy and prosperity to keep London fun and liveable, which is what the Peckham Lido is all about.”

If successful, the new Lido will be located right on top of its predecessor, which was built in 1923 in Peckham Rye Park, at the junction with Peckham Rye and East Dulwich Road.

The new Lido would form part of a

wider Peckham Beach development, featuring a gym, restaurant, amphitheatrestyle cinema and roof-top sunbathing area. Some 40 jobs could also be created.

Chris Romer-Lee of Octopi Architects, who have presented the designs pictured, said: “We’ve had an unbelievable response, raising more in the first 48 hours than any other Spacehive project to date.

“We’re currently just over £15,000 – well on target to hitting our £66k target within the next 70 days.”

Peckham Beach has also been entered into the mayor of Southwark’s Crowdfunding Programme which could mean the project gets an additional £20k.

Rumours of reopening the Lido first rippled through Peckham in 2014 when Camberwell and Peckham MP, Harriet Harman, and council leader Peter John both tweeted their support.

Ms Harman then met with architects at the site on October 3, 2014 to look at the plans, previously valued at around £2m.

Those who pledge any amount towards the project will only have to pay if the project meets its target.

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD HARVEY Brown has celebrated with his entire school after his strong reaction to a new drug treatment that is helping his body develop like a normal child.

Millwall-mad Harvey from Bermondsey jumped for joy as 480 pupils at his school, Surrey Square in Walworth, each let off a balloon for their Wear It Blue charity day.

His parents, Vikki and Dean, of Galleywall Road, say Harvey is “full of energy” and “happier than ever” since starting his Vimzim treatment for the debilitating disease, Morquio.

Dean, 46, said: “Today has just been incredible. We can’t believe what so many people have done, and are still doing for Harvey.”

Morquio is an enzyme deficiency which stunts the development of children’s skeletal growth, leaving sufferers with weak bones, a tendency to develop heart disease, and impaired vision and hearing.

Before the Vimzim became available on the NHS, Vikki and Dean were doubtful that little Harvey would live beyond his twenties.

“Harvey had his first treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital at the beginning of April. Each of the four infusions has taken five or six hours,” said Dean.

“Hopefully after twelve weeks everything goes well and there’s no problems, but the treatment will last for the rest of his life.

“We’ve seen improvement already, he’s got so much more energy and appetite.”

Vikki, 47, a teaching assistant at the school, said: “Harvey has been able to do so much more school work and has so much more energy. His appetite has improved and he is so much happier and smiling more since starting the treatment.

We have noticed such a difference.”

The party started at the turn of 3pm on Friday, on a day when Surrey Square were raising £1 from each pupil to wear something blue, as a donation for the MPS Society charity.

Noble said they had to book 3pm with Air Traffic Control as a time to release the 500 balloons, in case they got in the way of a helicopter.

Millwall FC donated £500, and over 500 chocolate cakes were baked and donated by the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch.

Nicola Noble, who made the countdown before the jaw-dropping balloon release, said: “Today is a celebration to show Harvey we love him.

They are a really special family to all of us.

“Our pupils wrote letters to the government asking them to fund Vimzim. Now the children believe they made all the difference and helped get Harvey his treatment.”

Vikki added: “Nicola has been there for our family through the good and the bad and are so grateful to the school.”

The celebration was also attended by Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, who helped the family create a petition, signed by over 10,000, for the government to make Vimzim free on the NHS. He said: “It’s wonderful to see so Harvey’s school and Millwall giving so much love and support.”

A CAMBERWELL cancer sufferer still undergoing chemotherapy is to run a ten kilometre race for charity on May 30.

Chris Norris (pictured), 33, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in October 2014 and had a clear scan in January this year.

But after deciding to take part in the Vitality 10,000 for Shine Cancer Support, the cancer came back forcing

him back into hospital.

It hasn’t dissuaded him, however, and Chris will be running the race as planned after one more round of chemotherapy on May 20.

Chris said: “I’ve run on and off before but never something like a 10k. I have gone through different periods of treatment at different times. I think after the first round of chemo you just focus on resting and getting through it.

“I feel slightly stubborn about it. I want to still be able to do this race.

“The charity I’m running for is small

but they work with the age group of people I am in. They work within the needs that we have and not just of those who also suffer from cancer like teenagers or elderly people. They do a social group and network for people who are going through it.

“I started my second treatment last week and the third one will be this Friday, which should give me some time to recover before the run. The treatment does give you fatigue and nausea which lasts a few days.

“You do usually feel sick if you

exercise shortly after the treatment. The drugs I’m on also make my toes and fingers sensitive to the cold, so sometimes do get pins and needles.”

Chris is a firm believer in not letting cancer decide everything in his life, and is determined to be in the best shape he can.

A BLIND octogenarian has celebrated his birthday by cycling to Paris on a tandem bicycle, and raised more than £15,000 for a children’s hospice.

Camberwell-born-and-raised Tommy Mulholland turned 80 on Friday, May 6 when he was also joined by 70-year-old Bob Harber to ride front for the 160 mile mammoth cycle.

Their three day cycle started in Newhaven, and by Sunday they were in view of the Eifel Tower.

Tommy told the News: “If you know me, I’m a positive kind of guy. I wasn’t scared in the slightest – I had my crash helmet on after all. It was really hard work, and we were training for two months. Apart from getting a soar bottom and soar shoulders I

was quite alright.”

As they peddled their last hundred metres into Paris Tommy was cheered on by his granddaughters.

Tommy was left blind in one eye after he was attacked by burglars at his old Peckham-based businesses, Hygienic. He lost sight in the other at the age of 47 a blood clot caused by the injury haemorrhaging. He was honoured with the Freedom of the City of London in November 2015 for a life-time of charitable work.

“I don’t think I did anything that incredible,” he added. “I just always try to keep fit and active.”

The money raised will be donated to the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in Worthing, Sussex.

Fish and chip shop earns a plaice on top 50 in UK list

HERNE HILL: A fish and chip shop is one of the top 50 in the UK according to a leading trade magazine, after a mystery diner reviewed the takeaway on a range of criteria.

Olley’s Fish Experience has satisfied hungry diners since 1987 and scored highly on Fry Magazine’s standards of staff friendliness and cleanliness, and got 100 per cent for its food.

Owner Harry Niazi said: “With over 10,500 fish and chip shops in the UK, to be in the top 50 is a fantastic achievement.

A CAMBERWELL homeowner fears facing thousands of pounds being knocked off her house value and potential damage to foundations as Japanese Knotweed is growing next door.

Alina Listopad, of Grace’s Road, has urged Metropolitan Housing Association to treat the destructive weed growing along their gardens in Dagmar Road, next to her house.

Ms Listopad claimed: “This has been going on since 2012. If you don’t deal with the knotweed then it will ruin the houses. That is a real danger.

“If someone wanted to re-mortgage their house then they would have to declare there was knotweed growing within seven metres and it would seriously affect them.

“I’m angry and frustrated that I am powerless to have it removed myself. I’m having to pay myself for people to come and assess how it’s affecting my own

garden.”

The weed, native to Japan, was brought to the UK for its beauty, but due to a lack of natural predators it has spread aggressively - with the ability to grow through walls, pipes and concrete.

Brunswick park councillor Mark Williams said: “Local residents raised this with me last year and I urged Metropolitan Housing Trust to remove the knotweed as it can cause real damage.

“It’s totally unacceptable that nearly a

year on it hasn’t been removed, I again urge MHT to treat their tenants properly and sort this out.”

In an attempt to raise awareness of the issue, Ms Listopad has started a petition which has since been signed by more than 50 people.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan said: “We are looking into the allegations and until our investigations are complete, we are unable to comment further.”

Hamlet supporters’ group backs stadium Man dies on the tube tracks

DULWICH HAMLET Football Club’s plans for a new stadium at Champion Hill has got the backing of its largest supporters representative body, and is now urging fans to ask the council to approve them.

The Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust decided to back the proposals after 94 per cent of its members responded to a poll favourably.

Duncan Hart, Chairman of DHST, said: "Our club is a major part of life in Southwark. The work that many volunteers have done to tackle discrimination and support community projects has received local and international acclaim.

“We want to build on this, alongside having a successful football team. I firmly believe that putting the Club into supporter ownership would mean that we could do just that."

If the plans are approved then ownership of the club will transfer

from Hadley Property Group to its supporters.

The application has been criticised by green campaigners, however, who object to the plan to build on Metropolitan Open Land at the Green Dale Fields.

Council Leader Peter John has voiced his opposition in the past too, previously tweeting: “My views on the future of Green Dale have been clear since 2002 and have not changed.

“I am opposed to the Hadley scheme.”

THE QUEEN riding a hoverboard with her corgis has featured in a painting on a Dulwich wall this week, after a mysterious graffiti artist visited the area.

The artist known as Catman painted the monarch in a modern setting to mark her 90th birthday and to celebrate Dulwich’s growing street art scene.

Catman told the News: “I wanted to paint the Queen a long time ago. I decided that it would be interesting to create a piece with a twist using different

techniques and with her birthday celebrations over the weekend it seemed like the perfect time.

“I wasn't commissioned, I did it off my own back. I noticed the level of quality street art Dulwich already has and wanted to be involved I would love to paint in Dulwich again.”

The wall on Lordship Lane, East Dulwich that Catman used as his canvas is owned by the Vass family, whom Catman asked for permission by leaving a letter.

Mr Vass said: “I thought the picture was in good taste. It showed the Queen as a modern Queen and not as an old fuddy duddy. The detail is absolutely incredible.

Not a day goes by without some people stopping outside to get a picture.”

A MAN died of his wounds hours after falling onto the tracks at Kennington Tube Station last week.

The man, who has not been named, was struck by the train at about 6.30am on Friday, May 13.

The station was immediately shut as ambulances, fire officers and police were called to clear the scene.

Eye witnesses said a blue tarpaulin was erected just outside the station entrance, where the heavily injured man was treated, before being loaded into an ambulance.

British Transport Police have confirmed the man was pronounced dead in a south London hospital later that day.

The exact causes behind the man’s death are unknown, and a spokesman for the police added that the incident will now be investigated by the local coroner.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner," the spokesman said.

Disruption was caused to the Northern Line, and commuters were reported to have been turned away from Clapham South, Tooting Bec, and the Oval stations.

THE ANNUAL Civic Awards ceremony was hosted at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday

The Mayor’s Special Award went to Shaun Dellenty, who founded the Inclusion For All project.

Shaun, who is deputy head teacher of Alfred Salter Primary School in Rotherhithe, launched the project in 2010 as an initiative to tackle homophobic bullying in schools.

Inclusion for All has since become a London and UK-wide movement that is helping to tackle gender and LGBTQ stereotyping, homophobic bullying and the use of related derogatory language.

The now former mayor, councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle paid tribute to Shaun for his “personal courage and foresight” and offered “lasting gratitude” on behalf of children whose experience of bullying will be reduced.

The Honourable Award was given to the Peckhamplex cinema, and presented by outgoing mayor, Cllr Dixon-Fyle, to the Plex’s chairman

Kath becomes Southwark’s mayor

SOUTHWARK: A new mayor for the borough was sworn in on Saturday at a ceremony at Southwark Cathedral.

Starting her one-year term as the new mayor, Rotherhithe ward councillor Kath Whittam said: “It is a huge honour to be appointed mayor of the borough I love and which I am proud to call home.

“I am stepping into big shoes taking over from Dora, who was a wonderfully passionate and accessible Mayor, but I’m looking forward to a great year serving the people of Southwark, and raising money for my chosen charities, The National Autistic Society and Surrey Docks Farm.”

The outgoing mayor, Camberwell Green ward cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle, told the News: “There are so many highlights. Abseiling down King College Hospital and walking 29 flights of stairs at Guys’ Hospital come to mind; so does Christmas carol singing for The Rhodes Project in London Bridge.”

The new deputy mayor is East Dulwich Cllr Charlie Smith.

Leader names new deputy as he reveals cabinet reshuffle

THE LEADER of Southwark Council, councillor Peter John, on Saturday announced his annual cabinet reshuffle.

The biggest announcement was the promotion of Cllr Stephanie Cryan to become deputy leader and cabinet member for housing.

The change of deputy leader, which is decided by a vote between cabinet members, saw former deputy leader Cllr Ian Wingfield become cabinet member for environment and public realm.

Cllr Wingfield replaced Cllr Darren Merrill, who is no longer a cabinet member.

Cllr Richard Livingstone has taken the position of cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, which was vacated by Cllr Cryan.

Cllr Michael Situ has also left the cabinet. His role as cabinet member for communities and safety taken over by Cllr Barrie Hargrove.

Cllr Maisie Anderson has joined as cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure, while Cllr Johnson Situ has joined the cabinet taking on

business, employment and culture.

Meanwhile, Cllr Fiona Colley has retained her position as cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance.

Cllr Victoria Mills remains cabinet member for children and schools and Cllr Mark Williams will continue as cabinet member for regeneration and new homes.

In addition there are three deputy cabinet members: Cllr Evelyn Akoto whose portfolio is for young people and careers, Cllr Octavia Lambe for cultural strategy, and Cllr Helen Dennis for mental health.

Council leader Peter John said: “I’m delighted to announce Southwark’s new cabinet, welcoming two new councillors who I know will help bring new energy and ideas to our already talented and experienced team.

“Cllrs Darren Merrill and Michael Situ are leaving the cabinet after two years and I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment over that time. They have done fantastic work and know that they will continue to work hard for local residents and their wards going forward.”

Parents worried after rodents invade playground

PANICKED PARENTS have told how rats invaded a children’s football pitch in Bermondsey after gnawing a hole in the tarmac.

Residents watched as dozens of rats climbed out of a hole on the pitch near Spenlow House on Janeway Street, and ran around, on Friday, May 13.

Parent Candy Hazelden said: “My boy goes to the school here. I’m worried that they will get in and hurt some of the children.

“The caretaker came and saw the rats after we alerted them. The health of the children who live around here is at risk.”

Council officers were quick to the scene armed with brooms but residents claim this is part of a wider problem, with rats regularly coming out of the drains.

Sue Breen, a resident, said: “My cat sits by the drain pipe waiting for the rats.

They often manage to get into some of the houses too.”

Another resident who did not wish to be named said: “We are worried about

rat urine and the kids. If one of the children drop something and go to pick it up and it’s covered in it, they will get ill.”

While nearby Riverside Primary School reported that none of the rodents were seen within the school’s grounds, there is anger over the number of rats in the area.

Councillor Eliza Mann, Liberal Democrat councillor for Riverside ward, said she had seen the rats running around and described it as “disgusting”.

She said: “I’ve visited the pitch several times now and children were playing there while the hole the rats come through was not covered.

“Parents are rightly worried about their children coming into contact with rat urine on the pitch and getting ill. That’s why notices not to enter the play areas have now been put up.”

The recent rat sightings are thought to possibly have something to do with the nearby Thames Water Tideway works, where the company is building a supersewer.

Cllr Mann added: “It’s clear that the rats are coming up through the drains,

maybe disturbed by the Thames Water tunnelling works nearby.

“That’s why I have demanded a full estate inspection to see what can be done to resolve the wider pest issues.”

A spokesperson for Tideway said it was “highly unlikely” their work is the cause but added that they would be willing to work with the local authority to investigate the issue.

Southwark Council have said they have scheduled a full site investigation to be carried out as quickly as possible.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “Our officers were called out to look into the pest issue late last week and attended immediately on Friday evening.

“We could see a full site investigation was necessary and have already scheduled this.

“This will be conducted as quickly as possible and we’ll ensure that the necessary works are carried out promptly.”

How the bridge may look

PLANS FOR a bridge that would connect Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf have gathered pace as the MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark met with the proposers - days after the new Mayor of London offered his support for the crossing.

MP Neil Coyle met with the charity Sustrans on Thursday May 12 to discuss how plans for the bridge could be moved forward. The proposed £88m project would see a pedestrian and bike bridge built by 2020 and slash commutes by twenty minutes.

MP Neil said: “With a new Mayor [Sadiq Khan], his sole focus on London and his new energy for the role, I hope to see the commitment to the Rotherhithe bridge delivered.

“The project is looking at how to reduce costs and raise funds as well as

look for partners to support the scheme.

“I really hope to see swift progress and strong public engagement on this proposed bridge that could have huge benefits for many local people."

Sustrans published a feasibility report in March detailing how it would benefit from a mixture of private and public investment and cost lower than expected.

With widespread public support, newly elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan included a commitment to the bridge in his manifesto.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “Sadiq believes a cycle and pedestrian bridge between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf could offer a huge boost for new jobs and homes, while promoting greener and safer ways of crossing the Thames.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to give that part of London a truly iconic bridge and he will be discussing the proposal in detail with Transport for London.”

From wireless to online radio collector features in new website exhibition DULWICH

AN ENTHUSIAST who amassed a collection of 1,200 radios in Dulwich and then built his own museum is now the subject of an online video exhibition.

Gerry Wells,who died at the age of 85 in 2014, had some of the earliest example of radios right up to models from the 1980s in his collection, which are now displayed in a museum.

From the age of four Mr Wells had a passion for electronics. In The Blitz of WW2, Mr Wells used to salvage electronical parts from bombed houses.

He then started an electronics repair business, salvaging any radios or TVs that interested him, until it became his lifelong passion. He would fix and revamp old electronics that people bought him, as well as make replicas of old models andhis collection grew until he had enough to start a museum.

A friend of his, John Thompson, 50, said: “They were very good replicas and some have turned up in auctions and even collectors haven’t realised they weren’t original. When they found out though, they didn’t mind having a Gerry Wells original!

“He was drawn by all things electronic. He never grew up and stopped being that mischievous naughty boy. When you were with him you felt you were entering into a different world.”

Mr Wells’s collection can be seen at The British Vintage Wireless and Television Museum, a charity which is the only working wireless museum in the UK. “He was over the moon when the charity was registered and it legitimised everything he had done,” Mr Thompson said.

A HERNE Hill brewery run by a husband and wife team are launching a crowdfunding campaign to build their business as hopportunity knocks.

“His memory is in the whole museum.

It was collected by him and the building was built by him as he was into carpentry and building sheds. It would be difficult to separate the museum and collection from him because he was so a part of it.”

The new online video exhibition from Safestore about Mr Wells also showcases other people who have compiled collections of history.

Tiffiny Franklin, Digital Outreach Executive at Safestore, 24, said: “Newspapers and magazines these days are full of de-cluttering articles, and it could be eradicating our history.

“The campaign was looking at collectors and we stumbled across this incredible nostalgic collection of radios.

“The radios are really beautiful and lovely, and extremely expensive. It depends on who you’re asking, because collectors can pay a lot for something they’re interested in.”

Speaking about Mr Wells, she said: “He was not a specialist by training, he

owned it by his love of fixing radio. He really was one in a million. He was kind of a hipster before it kicked off.

“He worked right until he died. He wasn’t one to just sit around, he was going to be tinkering around in the shed.”

She added: “The whole collection itself is rare. You may get replicas of the radios in this retro age we live in, where people like that sort of thing, but the whole thing together is rare.

“I don’t think you would find anything like this collection of radios in this country.”

The exhibition series will carry on with new videos on Scalextrics and taxidermy collections.

Mr Well’s life can also be seen in his autobiography Obsession and in a documentary called Valveman made by the British Vintage Wireless Society.

Bullfinch Brewery was started in 2013 by former sound engineer Ryan Mclean, 39. Ryan operates a brewery and tap room under the railway arches on Rosendale Road with his wife, Carly and dog, Dexter.

Now they are looking to raise £8000 through crowdfunder.co.uk after demand for their beer became too high.

Investors who put in larger sums will have the opportunity to design a beer with their name put on the label of the custom bottle.

The money raised will go towards new double fermenters and a Lindr, a portable dispensing system, to enable the business to travel to more festivals and pop up events.

Ryan said: “Demand has grown exponentially and our equipment can’t actually handle it.

“It’s [the crowd funding] more about having an involvement in the brewery which is good marketing and increases interest.”

Investors will be rewarded for their generosity with beer and merchandise, while other incentives include a day brewing with the team.

Ryan has praised the burgeoning community of brewers living in southeast London and hopes the added investment will see his company’s stock rise further still.

Bullfinch was formed after Ryan decided his former life on the road with pop bands was too demanding.

So far the results have been promising, with Rate Beer’s Best New London Brewer award coming in 2014.

Ryan has seen the widespread popularity that craft breweries have had in the US and New Zealand from his work on the road and hopes to replicate their impact in London.

He said: “It’s a nice little community, a nice little family.

“In south-east London there’s a few breweries popping up. It’s quite close knit.”

Piano campaign hits the right chord, as donations smash target HERNE HILL

SO MUCH money has been raised to replace the piano at Herne Hill station that the excess will be used to fund piano lessons for disadvantaged children.

The crowdfunding campaign to replace the well-worn instrument reached its target of £5,000 and is now aiming for £7,500.

The original target will buy a second hand replacement piano that is sturdy enough to survive the weather, as well as covering installation costs, a new platform, display art and constant maintenance.

The new target will go towards setting up the Herne Hill Piano

Academy.

The academy will offer hour long piano lessons, 'teach yourself piano' books and CDs, and a library of sheet music for the piano.

Money raised will also go towards a duet piano stool and storage space for the library.

People who pledge money towards the new target will also receive rewards. A person who donates £5 will get a thank you card from the piano and someone who donates £50 will get a piano bag with Sweet Carolina biscuits inside.

People who pledge £100 will see their name on the piano wall.

Giles Gibson, Chairman of the Herne Hill Forum, which is running the campaign, described the flood of

donations as “very special”.

He said: “It’s a whole area that is involved in education and the music sadly is the first thing that gets cut when they want to save money. But balance in school is what children need, and music is a discipline that it builds confidence and greats opportunities.”

Mr Gibson would like to encourage children to practise on the piano in their free time.

The academy will select eligible children through the local schools, although they will not automatically reject individual applications.

Buzzing Khan is Mayor

T'S OVER a week now, but I'm still buzzing that Sadiq Khan is our new mayor of London.

It means it's a really hopeful time for London. We can look forward to more homes being built and sold or rented at a price people can afford. He's promised to put a cap on spiraling transport fares. It's going to be a time for new plans and new ideas. Whether it's keeping our air cleaner or our streets safer, or helping new businesses start up and tackling the inequality which still scars London, Sadiq has said he'll be a Mayor who listens and innovates. And it's an incredibly proud time for London. We've elected as our new Mayor a man who was brought up on a Tooting council estate, whose parents emigrated here from Pakistan - his father to work on the buses and his mother to work as a seamstress. He went to University and set up his own legal firm. And he's the first Muslim to be elected to lead our great City the first of any city in Europe.

I feel proud that our city could enable someone from Sadiq’s background to rise to be Mayor. I feel relieved that he was elected - with Londoner's rejecting the Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith's deplorable attempt to give voters the entirely false impression that Sadiq would be soft on terrorism. The Equality and Human Rights Commission should bring out the declaration which all party leaders signed in the 2001 pledging not to allow racial or religious divisions to be used for party advantage. No party should seek to get their candidate elected by whipping up racial tension. It's time David Cameron signed it.

I agree with Sadiq that now he's elected it's important that he's "the Mayor for all Londoners". He will reach out not just to Labour voters but to those who voted Tory, UKIP or Green - or who didn't vote at all.

He will engage with people of all faiths, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jews - as he showed at his inauguration at Southwark Cathedral. You can't build unity in the city by playing one community off against another.

I shall be supporting our Southwark council leader Peter John as he seeks the backing of the Mayor to build more council and affordable homes. And I shall be knocking on Sadiq's door to insist that in City Hall and in everything he does he supports women to make more progress towards equality.

I'm delighted to see the back of Boris Johnson as our Mayor. He's certainly a big celebrity but I can't forgive his insult to our African communities here in London when he talked about "picannnies" or about their "watermelon smiles". And he neither knew nor cared about people who work hard but struggle to get on the housing ladder or to make ends meet.

I hope, and expect, that the Government whether it's the Prime Minister, Chancellor or Transport Minister will work with Sadiq.

We’ll only charge if you have savings

I WANT to reassure residents following last week’s story (Council pulls cord on free safety for elderly and disabled, Southwark News, May 12, 2016) on safety alarms that the council’s priority to continue keeping people safe and well in their homes has not changed.

Southwark is facing a huge challenge in balancing significant budget cuts with rising care costs on all its care services.

Our Fairer Contributions Policy ensures we are fair and balanced to all of our service users. As the number of people needing care services grows, asking those who can afford to pay to make a contribution ensures we are able to keep services free for our most vulnerable residents.

This brings the council in line with neighbouring boroughs. We will only charge for a care package if someone has savings of more that £23,250 and in most cases there will be no charge or only a proportion of all the care they receive. Any contribution is for the total care package received, not just safety alarms.

All the income the council receives through the 2% council tax precept will continue to fund care services for residents, but unfortunately this won’t come close to filling the huge gap we face in social care funding.

We will continue to prioritise our most vulnerable residents, as well as pushing the Government to fairly fund our public care system.

Public are sick of career politicians

I'M DISAPPOINTED that Neil Coyle has once again taken to print to express opposition to his (and my) party's leadership.

He says that he regrets helping Jeremy Corbyn onto the leadership ballot. I'm sure he does. In fact, I

suspect he regretted it as soon as it became clear that Corbyn was going poll more votes than the rest of the candidates combined.

He, along with several other MPs, helped Corbyn to stand in order to 'broaden the debate'. I suspect they imagined a scenario where his so called 'hard left' ideology would be utterly humiliated, and that the charge that Labour under Ed Miliband had been 'too far left' would be put to bed and the Media placated. That went well.

In the Southwark News, Neil says no one has ever raised the Falklands or Trident on the doorsteps of Bermondsey. I don't doubt that, it's probably the same in most of the country. However, it's worth pointing out that any political party will have a position on these; as well as housing, education, the economy and the NHS. For example on housing, Jeremy Corbyn said: “My priorities are one, invest in council housing with lifetime tenancies.

Two, regulate the private rented sector on quality, on length of tenure and in areas of high rent levels like London, there has to be maximum rent levels put in by region or by income level there’s got to be an affordability there..."

You have to ask yourself why the media made so much of the former and why some Labour MPs chose to go along with it?

I believe the concerns and priorities of the Labour leadership do reflect those of the people Neil meets on the doorstep.

So, in the absence of wider reporting, it's up to Neil, and people like me to get that message across (try http://jeremycorbyn.org.uk/priorities/) . How's that for an ambition?

As long as there's a queue at the TV studio to air the laundry in public, the impression will be one of a collection of selfish individuals, vying for a seat at the top table. Who's going to vote for that?

I want out of Europe

THE OLDER one gets, the more one worries about what sort of country my grandchildren and great grandchildren are likely to inherit.

Our PM, David Cameron, who perhaps sees his next career move as President of Europe, could see this as his rich reward for blackmailing the British people into staying in the corrupt EU club.

Parliaments are filled with careerist placemen and opportunitistic pygmies on the make, feathering their own nests and lining their pockets at tax-payers’ expense.

Only recently we learnt that MPs are to receive a £1,000 a year pay rise, on top of the inflation busting £7,000 they received last year.

You would have thought that after the parliamentary allowances scandal they’d have a little more selfawareness and ask themselves how this would seem to the outside public.

Then there are the people waiting weeks or months for a hospital appointment for vital operations.

Young families still paying off student loans at 30 plus and having to rent a property because they will never have the money to buy.

This country probably has the worst infrastructure (roads, rail and airports), in Europe, an NHS creaking at the seams, a manufacturing industry that is still declining and defence cuts beyond safe limits.

All this can be blamed on poor successive government decision making for decades. That’s it – end of rant.

AY CAN be warm but tends to be unsettled until about the third week, when prolonged periods of sunny and dry weather arrive.

This year May began with unusually warm conditions, and then it turned unsettled! Despite the cold snap in April some of the more tender plants managed to avoid a check in growth, although northerly winds damaged new shoots and emerging flowers.

May is a beautiful month - the best in the gardening calendar for sheer variety of trees and shrubs in bloom. All plants are putting on fresh new vibrant growth. It seems that everywhere the air is full of perfume from Choisya, Lilac, Ceanothus, Wisteria and Cherry laurel. Some of the most impressive Rhododendrons and Azaleas also start to flower during May. Typical spring displays in parks and gardens contain a profusion of tulips, wall flowers and forget-me-nots.

Lightly prune shrubs such as Rosemary once flowering is finished, also trim Forsythia and the evergreen Viburnum.

Vinca (Periwinkle) known for its spreading habit, can be cut back to contain growth, otherwise it is likely to take over the garden.

This is a good time of year to get your herb collection organised. Herbs are incredibly versatile and essential in any garden. They can be grown for cooking, used as refreshing herbal teas, and most are hugely beneficial to wildlife - whether in the garden or window box.

Many herbs are easily grown from seed (except Parsley, Rosemary and Lavender), but plants are readily available so start with small specimens for window boxes/containers and use larger plants for the garden. Once established the shrubby varieties like Rosemary and Sage will grow for many seasons. Herbs can be dried or frozen and surplus leaves can be used to make deliciously flavoured oils. The best herbs for wildlife are mints, thyme and marjoram – the latter will be covered in bees for the duration of the flowering season. Old English Lavender is also a favourite for bees.

The most spectacular flowering tree is Horse chestnut, and it blooms during May. It grows to 80 ft with a spreading canopy making it unsuitable for most urban gardens. The Horse chestnut has huge palmate leaves made up of 5 leaflets; it produces white flowers with a splash of red which grow upwards above the branches.

In autumn, the familiar spiky seed pods are produced containing dark glossy chestnuts.

This beautiful tree is in decline due to a fast spreading disease called ‘bleeding canker’, which is caused by bacteria and fungus.

Affected trees show a dark red-brown sticky liquid seeping from cracks in the bark. This disease weakens; causes die back and can kill young trees.

Lorraine declaring the war was ‘a great big conspiracy to break my heart’ which, amongst far too much symbolism, was a highlight for me.

Last of the Boys seems like the writer’s opportunity to get stuff off his own chest. The main crux of the programme notes is to blame one man for the horrors of Vietnam, and while Dietz is on a rant-roll there is even a running joke about the time coming for the Rolling Stones to ‘just stop’.

I could say the same about writers forever bringing up a 50 year old war.

THE STORIES of three of Dulwich and Herne Hill’s most celebrated pubs have been immortalised in a new book published last week.

Dulwich man Ian McInnes, who coauthored the book ‘The Pubs of Dulwich and Herne Hill,’ says one of the most notable boozers mentioned within is the much-talked-about Half Moon, which came into existence in 1660.

The current Grade II* listed incarnation of the Half Moon pub was rebuilt in the 1890s, but it once stood on the banks of the old river Effra, which snaked along Half Moon Lane. The only way to reach the pub was via a picturesque wooden crossing.

The Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, Prince William Henry was quoted in 1760 as retelling the story of an extraordinary hunt, where he and his horseman pursued a tireless stag across fifteen miles of rolling Surrey countryside. They chased the stag from the Epsom Downs, through Lewisham and Bromley, all the way to the pub, where the Duke and his party

finished it off in the old Half Moon Pub’s beer garden.

The historian also remarks that the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were dangerous times to be a pub land lord. “In those days, the land lord at the Half Moon would often face up to burglars and separate big brawls. People were much less civilised back then. Of course no one had to worry about drinking and driving,” says Ian. Although no name is recorded, Ian says his research brought him to one tale of a Half Moon land lord who was threatened against testifying in court after the pub was ransacked by an established gang of thieves in the

1780s.

The Victorian era was also an incredibly lucrative time to be a pub land lord, so much so that before the Half Moon was rebuilt, it was sold for £64,000, while nearby cottages were only thought to be worth £850.

In more recent years the Half Moon has welcomed the likes of 1974 Great Gatsby actress Mia Farrow, Grammy award winning conductor André Previn, Frank Sinatra, and U2.

The second prestigious boozer Ian was keen to pick out from the book was The Crown and Greyhound, located in Dulwich Village. In 1890 it was built to replace two rival dives: The Crown, which dates back to the

1720s, and The Greyhound, which faced each other on opposite sides of the old village high street.

“There was healthy competition between the two,” Ian says, “But they had different crowds.

“The Greyhound was aimed at wealthier people, or ‘the nobs’ as they were called, while The Crown was always for the workers.

“Charles Dickens and Joseph Paxton, who designed the Crystal Palace, were both known to have stayed at the Greyhound, as it was known as a peaceful, rural retreat for celebrities in the day.”

The original Dulwich Hamlet football club’s players used to make a

habit of carrying their goal posts through The Crown’s grounds before matches “usually stopping for a drink before and after,” says Ian. Lastly in Ian’s list of fascinating list of factoids is that The Crown and Greyhound played host to the millennium anniversary dinner in 1967, 1,000 years on from the first known recorded mention of Dulwich, found in papers from the year 967, even predating the Domesday Book.

DECKED WITH marble, portraits and bouquets, and with a demographic of predominantly finely-suited, fully-scrubbed and high-heeled City professionals, you could forgive a casual passerby for mistaking Tas for something too exclusive, writes Owen Sheppard...

On the contrary, this eight-restaurant chain, though brimming with class, offers a laid-back experience with quick service and a buzzing

atmosphere.

Our party of three walked by at 7.30pm on a Wednesday to find nearly all but a handful of its fifty tables and 200 plus covers occupied. We hadn’t booked but were seated quickly and greeted with complimentary olives and fluffy white flatbread (and no, they didn’t already know I was coming for a review).

The menu lists dishes by category: meat, vegetarian, seafood and meze, with most main courses falling between £9 and £14. Turkish cuisine still has a way to go to before Brits, even ultra-cultured zone-one dwellers, will see it as a cheap-and-cheerful neighbor of Pizza Express or Bills. But Tas is beginning to sow those seeds.

Though distinctive, Turkish food is quite accessible to anyone who approves of citrus flavours with tender,

stewed or curried chicken, lamb and rice dishes. Artichokes, mushrooms, tomatoes, chickpeas and courgettes make their way across the board at Tas; all are ingredients that centuries ago made bed fellows in the homes of Persian royalty, and prevail today.

I’ll admit, it probably wasn’t wise for all three of us to order such similar dishes: lamb or chicken Köfte with our meat either as kebabs or tendered by a slow boil, as it doesn’t help convey the breadth of what was on offer. But I can say the colourful and wonderfully textured and flavorsome dishes went quite some way to ticking our boxes. If only the portions had been a touch more generous – but you can’t have it all – so it’s worth ordering a bowl of basmati rice to share, infused with a choice of apricots, lentils, sultanas and more.

There was also the spectacle of seeing the chefs tirelessly working, yet grinning to one another, while stretching and whirling bread dough or flicking the contents of frying pans up and down.

A brief hiccup came when I ordered a tomato juice, rather than go for another so-so Turkish Perge lager, only to unexpectedly find it topped at least onefifth with Tabasco. Perhaps a little too authentic for my unseasoned taste buds, but our waiter obliged by offering a replacement, and thereby passed a crucial test.

So all together: quick, light, moderately priced, but radiating sophistication, while doing everything it can to be welcoming and inclusive.

Expect this slowly burgeoning chain to pop up elsewhere, but let’s hope it doesn’t rush its dinner too quickly.

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game

THURSDAY 4th of February saw Millwall Premier League Kicks enter a new venture with the start of two new Futsal sessions held at the home of Millwall Community Trust, The Lions Centre. Both sessions are funded by the London FA.

The FA are particularly keen to increase the exposure and opportunities to play Futsal for the youth age groups for boys and girls across England. The FA are actively looking to encourage many youth leagues and clubs across the country to embrace Futsal as part of their seasonal playing programme.

The sessions run weekly with

the ladies session running every Thursday evening from 7 until 8pm for 16+ and every Saturday morning from 11am-12:30pm for 16-18 year olds. The technical benefits of Futsal are well documented, and the game can have an important role in the technical skill development of young football players. Many countries across the world that we admire for their progressive and expansive style of football and rich pools of playing talent integrate Futsal into the early phases of youth development.

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided football game that is widely played across the world and is officially recognised by

both UEFA and FIFA. The nature of the game places a large emphasis on technical skill and ability in situations of high pressure, and is subsequently an excellent breeding ground for football competencies that can be translated into the 11-a-side format of the game.

Many of the top world class footballers played Futsal in their youth and credit it with supporting their footballing development; players such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Kaka, Lionel Messi to name but a few of the South American legends all played and enjoyed Futsal. Futsal has also helped players on the European stage

Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Xavi, Fabregas amongst many others have played Futsal to develop their skills.

Community Development Officer for the trust Gary Otim commented: “For years now I’ve been a massive fan of futsal. I remember being a young coach alongside a former colleague Adam Lawrence where we used a Futsal in the Silwood Estate ball court called Tissington court. The session became the talk of the town, attracting 30-40 12-18 year olds week in week out.

“The young people showed no fear on the ball with a freedom of expression that I hadn’t always seen. The technical skill

on show weekly was superb.

With our modern day sports hall facility at the Lions Centre and backing from the London FA we saw this as a great opportunity for the young people of Southwark and Lewisham, including females with our ladies only Futsal session as another platform to show off their vast range of skills”.

SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT boxing prospect Joe McCory picked up the fourth win of his professional boxing career in convincing fashion last Saturday.

The 25-year-old won every round in a points verdict win over Bulgarian Radoslav Mitev at the York Hall, Bethnal Green as he continues to make his way in the paid ranks.

McCory, who fought for Fisher Boxing club as an amateur, is unbeaten since his pro début in June

last year and has a perfect boxing record in terms of victories.

His old club mate Ted Cheeseman, who currently has an identical record to McCory, will return to the ring on June 3, again at York Hall.

STANSFELD ROUNDED off their season with a thumping 4-0 league win over Greenways FC leaving manager Lloyd Bradley satisfied with a season that has seen them pick up two cups.

The Bermondsey club came up short in the league, runners up albeit nine points behind Faversham Strike Force Seniors, but victories in the finals of the Hospital Charity Cup and the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield means Bradley and his players can look back on the season with pride.

He told the News: “What a great way to end the season. The squad was stretched again as injuries and absentees meant we had to reshuffle the team, with some players playing out of position.

“But the boys did brilliantly again and they showed a great attitude out there. This was epitomised by young

“It probably looked how it was. It was fast and furious and how a playoff game should be. We all want the same thing and it was a brilliant atmosphere.

“Before every game I’ve been here the bunch of lads we’ve got are very relaxed and focused,” Taylor explained. “But when kick-off comes there is a realisation it’s a massive game and there’s a lot on the line for both teams. We both want to get to Wembley.

“IT’S ONLY half-time.” That was the message from Neil Harris not long after this win had vaulted Millwall closer to the League One play-off final.

No sooner had the Lions boss taken his seat in the press room at Valley Parade at half-two on Sunday than he was stressing there was still a long way to go before fans can start planning for May 29.

Harris had just come from recording his post-match interview pitch-side for the club’s website, where his train of thought had been disrupted by a Millwall fan roaring towards the dejected Bradford players. “Oi, lads" the voice boomed. "That was the easy game – the hard one’s Friday.”

Harris attempted to continue on before bursting into a laugh and asking to re-do the piece. It was a funny moment but while the fan’s bravura was understandable, by the time Harris had climbed the stairs before speaking to reporters he was very much on message.

There would be no complacency because the “characters” in the dressing room wouldn’t allow it, he insisted.

And that wasn’t just playing down the significance of the result. It is, after all, only just over a year since Bradford came from 2-0 down to beat Chelsea 42 at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup. Bradford could still have six of the players who started that game in their side on Friday.

James Hanson and Billy Clarke on Friday and as the 1,828 Millwall fans skipped back off the London Harris would have been focusing his players’ minds again.

Phil Parkinson’s side showed enough in the second half on Sunday to suggest they will be a threat. But the Bradford manager admitted they weren’t used to being behind recently and they were certainly rattled after a frenetic first half.

Bradford had won seven consecutive games at home. Given they comfortably kept two clean sheet against Millwall this season it was ominous when Tony McMahon put them ahead from the spot in the thirteenth minute after Joe Martin had handled.

At that point the Bantams hadn’t let in a goal at Valley Parade for almost eight hours.

If all of those things weighed on Millwall’s collective mind they didn’t show it.

Ninety-three seconds after McMahon’s penalty Byron Webster floated a long free-kick into Bradford’s box. Steve Morison was under it, and the captain bullied Rory McArdle out of his way to nod down to Gregory who produced a sublime touch before holding off Nathan Clarke to spin and fire low past Ben Williams.

Gregory revelled in scoring his 26th goal of the season, gesturing to Bradford fans to 'calm down' as he celebrated with his team-mates.

The first fifteen minutes of the clash had been ferociously contested and after Morison, Ben Thompson and Chris Taylor had crunched into tackles it was tempting to think there wouldn’t be 22 players on the pitch at the final whistle.

But that goal took a little of the sting out of the home side and it was about to get worse for their supporters.

In the 33rd minute Morison spun away down the left and raced into the box before winning a corner. Shane Ferguson took it, pinging the ball to the near post – where Hanson is usually stationed. Morison lost James Meredith and nipped in front of Jamie Proctor to smash a header in off the crossbar.

Morison, too, took delight in front of the home fans in the Kop end.

Sensing Bradford's shock and the opportunity to fill their boots, Gregory and Morison continued to torment the hosts. After Gregory was fouled 25 yards out, Martin redeemed himself when he curved a beautiful shot over the wall and past Williams at the near post for his third of the season.

In the second half Millwall were forced to show a different face.

Bradford dominated and should have pulled a goal back in the 51st minute.

Proctor, who gave the outstanding Webster and Mark Beevers a physical test throughout, robbed Carlos Edwards of the ball to advance into the box. The striker picked out Filipe Morais’ run but the former Millwall player sent the ball wide from ten yards with most of the goal to aim at.

That was the closest they came to reducing the deficit. Lee Evans curled a couple of late efforts off target but Millwall’s back four was superb and in front of them Thompson and Jimmy Abdou worked ferociously hard to protect them.

The job is almost done. Now it’s time to shut the door fully on Bradford’s hopes.

Deadly duo fire Lions

LEE GREGORY and Steve Morison have now scored 45 goals between them in all competitions this season.

The pair finished the regular League One campaign with a combined 35 goals – the joint-highest for a front partnership in the division with Swindon’s Nicky Ajose and Jonathan Obika.

Gregory, on 26 goals in all competitions this season, and Morison, with nineteen, also had a combined ten assists in the league.

Last Sunday it was from Morison’s knockdown that Gregory swung to equalise so soon after Tony McMahon’s penalty.

Morison earned the derogatory nickname ‘The Shift’ when he was at Leeds United because though his work rate was appreciated by fans he didn’t match it with goals, scoring just eight in 42 appearances for the club he left for Millwall last summer.

Lions fans haven’t always warmed to Morison but this season his shifts on the pitch and a prolific return have made him a favourite.

Gregory and Morison raced past the 41-goal total Morison and Neil Harris scored between them in 2009-10 in a season that ended in glory at Wembley.

And the duo are on course to propel Millwall’s season to the same dramatic conclusion.

The veteran defender could end his career with one final big day out EXCLUSIVE

GIVEN CARLOS Edwards has played at the Azteca Stadium it’s difficult to doubt him when he says last Sunday at Bradford was like a “Sunday League game”.

He’s joking, of course, which he does a lot in every interview.

Edwards is wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the message, ‘I destroy myself so you can’t’ and as Jordan Archer peers around the corner to playfully mock The Fossil – as his manager and team-mates call him, a reference to his age – he shrugs it off with an easy smile.

That relaxed and personable nature disguises a fierce drive and ambition and he isn’t ruling pushing his 37-yearold body – 38 by the opening stages of next season – through another campaign.

He also wears all the scars from the injuries over the years, the most noticeable the long one on his knee that needed rebuilding after he collapsed under a challenge against Nottingham Forest at the beginning of last season.

Edwards drove to Ipswich last month

to play in an U21 game to keep up his match sharpness. He caught up with his former team-mates Daryl Murphy and Christophe Berra and manager Mick McCarthy, who released him in 2014. He says he holds no grudge against him. Edwards also got on well with McCarthy’s former nemesis Roy Keane, who was his boss at Sunderland.

It’s hard to imagine Edwards has fallen out with many people through his career and he has a relationship with his manager Neil Harris that is based on mutual trust. If he needs extra time to recover he can make that decision himself.

He started for the first time for more than two months at Bradford last Sunday, hardly ideal opponents against whom to test his aging body. But one moment aside, when Jamie Proctor stripped him of possession in the second half to almost set up a goal, Edwards was excellent. He exudes calm on and off the pitch but he felt the effects of a bruising contest against Phil Parkinson’s side.

“It was a tough encounter so you do

have to take it easy, which I did,” Edwards said. “I stayed at home, stayed away from the kids who left me alone and gave me that peace and quiet!

“But the body feels fine, the gaffer

have to but he never takes the simple decision.

“I could easily have said I didn’t want to play, and the gaffer did give me that option, there was no summons,” Edwards explained. “Seeing that I hadn’t been playing for a while I decided to take myself up there and drove up in the morning. It’s an hourand-a-bit drive and I played the 90 minutes.”

He helped the Millwall youngsters reach the play-off semi-final in their league. They couldn’t go a step further without him but now with Mahlon Romeo’s suspension he is integral to the senior team’s plans to reach Wembley, where he has never played, though he was on the Wrexham side that defeated Southend in the 2005 Football League Trophy final at the Millennium Stadium.

He has played in most of the biggest venues in his career but even with all that experience the butterflies still flutter before he steps over the white line.

“I always do (get nervous),” Edwards

“I stayed at home, stayed away from the kids who left me alone and gave me that peace and quiet!” looks after me in that aspect. Earlier in the season when we had those Saturday-Tuesday games he’d ask me if I wanted to do certain things and if I didn’t want to I could take myself out.

“So he gives me that leeway but I don’t take the mick out of it or say I’m not doing something just because he said I could.”

Harris suggested he play for Justin Skinner’s side at Ipswich. He didn’t

admitted. “In my eighteen years as a professional footballer I couldn’t sit here and say there was a day when I didn’t feel nervous. But I’m never nervous to the extent I say I don’t want to play or I’m scared. No. It’s anxiety, wanting to get it over with. And as soon as the first whistle goes the nerves are gone and the focus is on the game.”

That fixture at the 100,000-capacity Azteca Stadium in Mexico City was a World Cup qualifier with Trinidad & Tobago, hence why having almost 20,000 Bantams fans with the sniff of Lions blood in their nostrils was a cakewalk.

“The atmosphere in Mexico was crazy,” Edwards said. “The crowd looked like little ants. Bradford was like a Sunday League game compared to Mexico! Obviously I’ve played at places like Old Trafford with 75,000 and at the Emirates, St James’ Park.

“But I’ve never actually played at Wembley.”

He says the squad would “chew someone’s hands off” to get to the play-off final and pays tribute to everyone at the club. “That speaks volumes about not just the players but also the staff and the gaffer.”

The volume will rise and reverberate around a packed Den on Friday, but it won’t faze The Fossil as he aims for potentially one last great occasion.

NEIL HARRIS has promised that his side will “get at” Bradford in the second leg of their play-off semi-final on Friday.

The Lions hold a two-goal advantage from the first leg at Valley Parade last Sunday, but Harris insisted they will not change their usual approach.

The Lions have won five successive games, and are unbeaten in eight at The Den during which time they have conceded just one goal.

Harris admitted he wasn’t expecting Millwall to have such a significant advantage ahead of Friday’s clash, but is pressing home to his squad the importance of maintaining their normal focus.

“It’s a different challenge,” Harris said. “I’ve said to the guys we’re two-nil up in the first minute. The players have got that confidence but it’s a strange situation to be in.

“It’s one we would have taken at twelve o’clock last Sunday. Where we’ve been so good this year is we don’t change our mentality, we won’t change now.

do anything different. We’ll play an aggressive form of football and we’ll get at Bradford.

“We’ll have to defend very well, like we did on Sunday, and we’ll again be aggressive in our defensive approach. But we’ll also be more of a goal threat than we were last week in the second half.”

Although Millwall halted Bradford’s seven-game winning streak at home in spectacular fashion with goals from Lee Gregory, Steve Morison and Joe Martin after Tony McMahon’s opener, Harris still sees room for improvement.

He explained: “In the second

period we defended really strongly but we made some individual errors. We know we need to cut them out and as an attacking threat we weren’t as good as we normally are.

“If I was being really picky I wasn’t happy with our performance after the break, so there’s loads for us to do better.”

Meanwhile, with Millwall 90 minutes away from Wembley for the second time this season, defender Carlos Edwards wasn’t shy in expressing how much it would mean to the players, saying: “We might chew someone’s hands off to get to the final, let alone lift the trophy.”

The midfielder joined Millwall in March from Blackburn Rovers on a deal until the end of the season and has scored three goals in eleven games.

He was out of favour under Paul Lambert at Rovers and it is unlikely he will stay at Ewood Park.

Taylor proved an instant hit with Lions fans when he scored just two minutes into his second debut at the club with the winner against Sheffield United.

The Den crowd have also taken to his aggressive style and he fitted seamlessly into the side after Wolves recalled Jed Wallace.

Taylor’s two goals in the 3-1 win at Bury edged the Lions closer to a playoff spot that they clinched with a 3-0 win over his former club Oldham.

Millwall manager Neil Harris has said he would like to sign Taylor, 29, on a permanent deal in the summer.

Taylor hinted there have been discussions with the club over where he sees his future but he also stressed his concern at the moment is ensuring Millwall see off Bradford at The Den on Friday night to reach the League One play-off final.

Asked if the next move in his career is on his mind, he said: “A little bit, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t.

“But the majority of my focus is on playing the games. There have been some talks but it’s hard to know what you’re going to do when you’re not 100 per cent sure what league you’re going to be in.

“The main focus is on getting to Wembley first and foremost and then back to the Championship.”
