Millwall spirit emulated by fans

F

OUR MILLWALL fans have raised £27,300 for a a West Ham supporter.

It's not a headline you may expect to read, and that's what makes the fans' efforts worthy of a story.

It's not the first time the News has written about Millwall fans taking on the plight of Isla Caton, the three-year-old West Ham fan who has neuroblastoma.

Her family are trying to raise money to get additional treatment not available on the NHS. To show their Lion hearts, Millwall fans Nick Hart and Bill Slack wore West Ham strips as they joined Hammers fans for a sponsored walk on Saturday. They walked from West Ham's training ground in Rush Green to London Stadium. Lions fans Jamie Pearce and Tom Monday have also raised thousands.

Nick told the News that the amount raised for the West Ham fan by Millwall supporters was 'astonishing'.

He described West Ham fans as 'very friendly and welcoming' on the day.

Isla’s family had initially hoped to raise £192,000, but after the devasting news that her cancer relapsed they now need £400,000, as she will need additional treatment not available to the NHS. Pair create tea range for children as alternative to fizzy drinks

A NUNHEAD mum has launched a new tea range especially for kids, and just in time for National Tea Day on April 21.

Small & Wild, a new range of herbal teas especially designed to suit children’s tastes, has recently hit London shops.

Becky Coletto, 36, started the new business, with the aim of giving kids a healthier option to fizzy drinks, with her friend Kate Towers.

Becky, born in Herne Hill, first met her co-collaborator Kate, a PR consultant, in an antenatal yoga class at Peckham Rye Park.

They both wanted to find a way to break out of the nine to five, and spend more time with their children.

Becky said: “We were always talking about our frustrations over cups of tea. And our kids would always come and try sips, but quite often they would be disappointed.

That’s when we had the idea.”

Another big consideration was a way to help make kids healthier, a subject she is passionate about.

According to figures from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey, primary school age children drink

just a quarter of the 1.3 litres they need to stay hydrated.

At the same time, Public Health England reports that fruit juices and fizzy drinks are major contributors to childhood obesity.

“I have trouble keeping my own kids hydrated. But I’m quite lucky though because they’re open to trying new things,” Becky said.

Her children, Amelie, aged four, and Monty, aged two, who were both born in Nunhead, have been enlisted to help too. From the outset, their mum filled their kitchen with tea ingredients and experimented to see what the children would like, from colours to taste.

Amelie already has a favourite in ‘Happy Toucan Tea’, a vanilla chai infusion, but Monty has yet to decide.

“My kids are my best critics. Their

taste buds are different. So you might think you’ve struck gold, but they’re not having it,” she said.

Becky, who worked in the arts industry for over a decade, has enjoyed the creative aspect of the role, collaborating with illustrators in Kent to design the hand-drawn packing.

She’s also worked with independent businesses like Jones of Brockley and Franklins Farm Shop to get the teas stocked locally.

The two owners hope to grow the project throughout London and eventually to bigger stores throughout the UK. In the meantime, Becky’s also happy to enjoy them with her family: “It is now such a special part of the day when we all sit together for a cuppa,” she told the News.

TEN FIRE engines and 72 firefighters battled a blaze in Peckham on Tuesday morning with shops damaged but, fortunately, no one injured.

The London Fire Brigade said it was called at 5.56am on Tuesday, April 17 to a roof fire at a shop, with flats above, on Peckham High Street.

The brigade said the blaze was under control by 7.32am, after crews from Peckham, New Cross, Old Kent Road, Brixton and other surrounding stations attended the scene.

The cause is still being investigated with no further updates available at the time of going to press.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed no one was hurt in the fire, telling the News on Tuesday: “We were called at 6:11am this morning (17 April) to Peckham High Street, SE15, to reports of a fire.

“We sent an incident response officer, two ambulance crews and our hazardous area response team.

“The first crew was on scene in less than one minute. There were no injuries and we didn’t take anyone to hospital.”

Although the exact location of the fire has not been confirmed by the emergency services, it looks to have affected the roof of the floor above Halal Meet Market, at 62 Peckham High Street.

It is believed that nearby shops including Zara’s Tropical Fruits, which is now listed on Google as “permanently closed”, and the longstanding Peckham supermarket, Crackerjack, may have also suffered damage from the fire.

Sally Butcher, whose Persian food shop Persepolis has been in Peckham since 2001, with a restaurant of the same name opening four-and-a-half-years ago, told the News she believed the fire started at around four in the morning.

She first became aware of the situation when a friend contacted her asking if she was safe.

Ms Butcher said the emergency team on the ground told her the building was empty when the fire broke out, telling the News: “I’m really good friends with the grocery and the butchers, some of the oldest shops in Peckham, and they all work really hard.

“In terms of what they need know, is

Cabinet members for 2017/18 received a weekly rate of £671.87 before tax.

This means Fiona Colley, who served as cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance for eight years, will receive £8,062.44 when she

leaves.

Mark Williams will receive £5,374.96 when he stands down as cabinet member for regeneration and new homes.

And Maisie Anderson, cabinet member for public health and social regeneration for two years, will receive £4,031.22.

Damian O’Brien, deputy leader of Southwark Liberal Democrat council group, said: “We are still shocked that Southwark Labour think they can get away with this.

“These Labour politicians are voluntarily resigning from their jobs months in advance.

“Why should they receive an additional pay-off for not working? This is the sort of self-indulgent nonsense you’d expect at Goldman Sachs – not in public service.”

Southwark Council confirmed the figures before the News went to press.

The Labour group did not respond before press deadline.

Appeal after collision WALWORTH: Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a man in his 20s died following a collision with a car.

Police were called to reports of a car in collision with a pedestrian in Kennington Park Road, at the junction with Penton Place, SE17, at 4.35am on Saturday, April 7.

London Ambulance Service attended and the 24-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s next of kin have been notified but police await formal identification and a post-mortem is still to take place.

The car involved stopped at the scene and the driver, a 24-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drugs.

He was subsequently released under investigation.

DC Clay O'Neill said: "There are still witnesses who have not come forward that we would very much like to speak to. If you have any piece of information however small, please do contact us."

BERMONDSEY: A man has been charged after police were called to reports of a firearm discharge. Officers were called to reports of a firearm discharge in Weston Street, SE1, at about 5.35pm on Wednesday, April 11.

Shivonny Shillingford, 23, of Burbage Close, SE1, was consequently charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

The defendant was expected to appear in custody at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court on Friday, April 13.

There were no reports of any injuries. Officers from the Trident and Area Crime Command continue to investigate.

A PAIR of Millwall fans have raised more than £4,000 for a young cancer sufferer after walking shoulder to shoulder with West Ham supporters for ten miles.

Nick Hart and Bill Slack donned West Ham strips as they joined a group of Hammers fans for a sponsored walk on Saturday in aid of three-year-old Isla Caton who has neuroblastoma.

The Lions supporters walked from West Ham’s training ground at Rush Green to London Stadium for the Stoke City game on April 14 to raise money for Isla to travel overseas for specialist treatment.

In total, four Millwall fans have so far managed to raise an incredible £27,300 for Isla.

Nick, from podcast Achtung Millwall!, has raised £2,560 for the youngster, Bill has raised £1,530, another Lions fan, Jamie Pearce, has raised £1,535, and a further £21,689 has been raised by Tom Munday.

Speaking to the News after completing the walk, Nick said: “The actual amount generated from Millwall fans is astonishing given it’s a West Ham fan at the centre of it all.

“I think there’s the hook of Millwall and West Ham being on the same side but I think that it’s mainly the strength of Isla’s story.”

Nick said all of the West Ham fans were “very friendly and welcoming” on the day – which saw him wear claret and blue for the first time in his life.

“I think they didn’t know what to expect when two Millwall supporters were turning up at their training ground,” he said.

“But we walked with one of the fans, Mark Little, who’s a boxer, and everyone I spoke to was great – there was no one there who I wouldn’t share a pint with.

Hamlet continue to ground share with Tooting & Mitcham

DULWICH HAMLET FC has confirmed it will continue to share Tooting and Mitcham’s ground next season.

The non-league club will remain at the KNK stadium in Imperial Fields for the 2018/19 season after a request was approved by the Isthmian league board.

Hamlet has been playing at the site, which is eight miles from Dulwich, after it was served notice on its licence to play at its Champion Hill ground last month by Meadow Residential LLP. Meadow bought the site back in 2014 with the intention of regenerating the land for new homes, but their plans were rejected by the Southwark Council in October for various reasons, including a lack of affordable homes.

The council’s director of regeneration is currently attempting to negotiate a price to buy the land from Meadow – but the developer has repeatedly insisted the land is not for sale.

If unsuccessful in its negotiation attempts, the council could look to acquire the land by using a compulsory purchase order.

Hamlet, which is in the race for promotion to National League South, the sixth tier of English football, said

in a statement: “Dulwich Hamlet are happy to announce we'll be making the KNK our temporary home for the 2018-19 season.

“The good people at Tooting have agreed that should we be given the opportunity to return to our ancestral home in SE22, we are able to do so without hesitation.

“The Isthmian league board approved our request last week, allowing us to plan for next season in Merton.

“In light of the move, and as a thank you to our fans we've released our Season Tickets for next year at the reduced price of £125 for adults.

(They'll be valid at Champion Hill should we return).

“We've also introduced 5 and 10 year season tickets for the first time.”

Figures comparing hospital prices across country show drivers charged £3.20 an hour

ST THOMAS’ Hospital charges patients and visitors more to park on average than any hospital in the country, new figures show.

The highest average charge for patients/visitors is £3.20 per hour at St Thomas’, according to NHS Estates Return Information Collection data.

The figures also show King’s College Hospital charges patients/visitors £2.33 per hour on average.

A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said the charges were in line with local parking facilities to prevent its car parks from being misused by the public. “To ensure our car parking spaces remain available for our patients and are not misused by members of the public visiting central London, the cost of parking at St Thomas' Hospital is in line with local parking facilities,” said the

spokesperson.

“We offer a discounted rate of £5 per day or £25 for seven days in certain cases. This could include when someone visits one of our long-term patients on a daily basis.

“Disabled badge holders attending an appointment with their appointment letter and their valid disabled badge on the day are offered free parking.”

The figures also revealed that three out of ten hospitals charge staff for parking. St Thomas’ is shown to charge staff £0.25 per hour on average, and King’s to charge £0.29.

The highest average charge for staff is £2 per hour at both Edgware Community Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, figures show. Based on the official figures, this suggests that the cost of parking for a 40-hour working week would be £80.

However NHS Property Services, which manages the Edgware Community Hospital car park, questioned the official data after it

was published, saying staff could park for free in the staff car park, and that there was a separate pay and display car park for visitors charging £2 for the first hour on a scale up to £6 for eight hours. Department of Health guidance is for NHS organisations to ensure staff can reach sites “as safely, conveniently and economically as possible”.

Steve Gooding, director of RAC Foundation, which analyses the data, said: “Few parking issues are as incendiary as charging people to leave vehicles at hospitals, be they patients, visitors or staff.

“Many hospitals are on built-up locations, on constrained sites, so some sort of control is inevitable, but this needs to be proportionate and stress free.

“Government guidance encourages hospitals to use pay-on-exit systems.

This would at least mean the anxiety associated with a hospital visit is not compounded by paying up front and having to predict to the second how long a visit will last.”

A FORMER Grange Hill star will make his directing debut at a Borough pub this spring.

Erkan Mustafa, who played Roland Browning in the children’s BBC drama, will be directing Bonqrz, an interactive comedy show.

The show is based on the life of the actress and main character Narin Oz, who plays herself. She described the show as a “blend of reality and fiction.”

“I’m really excited about it, there aren’t enough female comics out there.

She can really take us on a journey, she leaves me baffled,” Mustafa told the News.

Mustafa was in Grange Hill from 1982 to 1987. The series was one of the longest-running programmes on British television, starting in 1978 and ending in 2008.

Ali Brice will also be performing his show Ali Brice’s Lemonade Stand, directed by Spenser Jones, actor and co-creator of British children’s television series Big Babies.

“It’s about a man called Lemon Adrian who's trying to get back in his

dad's goods book after stealing all his money and investing it in a lemonade stand, and losing it all,” Brice told the News.

The shows are previews of performances that will be held at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer.

Both shows are free but donations are welcome. Performances will take place at the Kings Arms, 65 Newcomen Street, SE1 1YT on Tuesday, 8 May 2018. Shows start at 8pm.

Camberwell man George Arthur Roberts was war hero before joining the London Fire Brigade

ONE OF the first black firefighters to serve with the London Fire Brigade has been honoured with the unveiling of a plaque at his former station in New Cross.

George Arthur Roberts BEM, who was born in Trinidad in 1890 and died in 1970, served at New Cross Fire Station during the Second World War. He was also a soldier during the First World War and was wounded in the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Standing at 6’2”, George earned a reputation for throwing bombs back over enemy lines.

After the war, he settled in Peckham before moving to Camberwell, where he and his family lived for almost 50 years.

He became a leading fireman for the London Auxiliary Fire Service and started his service at New Cross in 1939. In 1944, he was awarded the British Empire Medal “for general duties at New Cross Fire Station” and for his part as a founder and pioneer of the Discussion and Education groups of the fire service.

His great granddaughter, Samantha

Harding, and representatives from London Fire Brigade and the Fire Brigade’s Union attended the unveiling ceremony last Sunday.

‘Join up and you could help save a life’

RESIDENTS ARE being asked to join a volunteer scheme which could help save the life of a neighbour in a medical emergency.

The Community First Responder (CFR) scheme is a successful and long-standing partnership between St John Ambulance and the London Ambulance Service (LAS) NHS Trust.

The volunteers are trained by St John Ambulance and the LAS, and they respond to 999 calls received by the LAS in their own vehicles during arranged shifts.

The call for more volunteers is backed by Dulwich resident John Joseph, 59, who has volunteered with the Southwark and Lewisham CFR

Unit since 2009.

“I always had an interest in medicine, and had learned first aid at work,” said John. “I felt the basic skills I had could be further developed to enable me to do the very best I could for someone who needed help, either close to home, or at work.”

John generally volunteers every Sunday for around five or six hours and can be called out to a variety of incidents, from diabetic emergencies to chest pains. Since starting as a CFR he’s tended to over 500 patients.

“Knowing I have been able to make a difference to someone in those vital first few minutes is enormously satisfying,” he said.

“It’s also about great team work; offering support to LAS paramedics or ambulance crew and having the confidence to take appropriate action when it’s needed.

“When you hear someone has made a good recovery from something like a cardiac arrest, you feel chuffed to

bits.”

As well as volunteering as a CFR, John is signed up to GoodSAM – an

app which uses GPS technology to alert first responders to nearby medical emergencies.

In the last month alone, he’s used his skills learned as a CFR to attend two cardiac arrest patients – one, an elderly neighbour, the other a male in his fifties who had a cardiac arrest while having lunch in central London.

John leads the South London district team of CFRs, with units in Greenwich & Bexley, Southwark & Lewisham, Bromley, Croydon, Wandsworth & Lambeth, and Kingston.

The scheme is looking for new volunteers to join these existing teams.

TWO AYLESBURY Estate leaseholders have reached a settlement with Southwark Council after it published its new rehousing policy - but this week’s public inquiry is still going ahead as one objector is still holding out.

The News understands that two out of three leaseholders objecting Southwark Council’s Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) have now settled with the council and developers Notting Hill Housing.

The council’s new policy was uploaded online on April 5, 2018, confirming leaseholders will benefit from improved terms, including a new equity loan scheme to help them buy a replacement home their families will now be able to inherit.

The Aylesbury Leaseholder Action Group (ALAG), whose homes are slated for demolition, lobbied for a better deal from Southwark Council and took the issue to two public inquiries with the second, in January,

delayed until this week after over-running.

The council had resorted to using compulsory purchase orders to force the owners to give up their properties, as part of plans to demolish and rebuild the post-war estate.

The council had first offered displaced home owners the opportunity to buy a new councilbuilt home with a minimum 50 per cent equity share, now reduced to 25 per cent.

However, the leases offered by developers Notting Hill Housing and L&Q contained what residents described as “restrictive clauses” in the small print.

These terms meant that leaseholders’ share in the equity of their new home would not increase in line with the property’s market value – meaning if they sold-up in future, they would only receive their initial investment back.

Further restrictions also stopped letting or subletting their homes and left their families unable to inherit unless they owned a 100 per cent share.

Beverley Robinson, former chair of the action group, has now resigned from her position after reaching an agreement with the council.

The remaining members have vowed to continue supporting the final objector, with a spokesperson telling the News on Monday: “ALAG members however do not think the policy is satisfactory for a number of reasons, including the fact that it does not provide any improved offer for non-resident leaseholders; moreover it subtracts publicly owned council homes and makes them available for purchase to resident leaseholders, thus cutting into the already dwindling council home stock.

“ALAG will continue to fight its case at the Public Inquiry on Tuesday, 17 April and support the remaining leaseholder in her objection to the CPO."

SCIENTISTS AT Guy’s and St Thomas’ have discovered the first seeds of kidney cancer are sown as early as childhood.

Ground-breaking research involving clinicians and patients from the hospital trust has revealed kidney cancer follows distinct evolutionary paths, enabling them to detect whether a tumour will be aggressive.

The three Cancer Research UK-funded

studies, published in the journal Cell, shed light on the fundamental principles of cancer evolution and could lead to future clinical tests to give patients more accurate prognoses and personalised treatment.

Kidney cancer is a growing problem with around 12,600 new cases in the UK every year – an increase of 47 per cent over the last decade.

Currently the seventh most common cancer in the UK, incidence rates for kidney cancer are projected to rise by a further 26 per cent by 2035.

surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’, who helped design the studies, said: “We know that our patients gain a real sense of confidence and satisfaction from helping to advance scientific research.

“They tell us that they want to be part of efforts to conquer a disease and help future generations. I want to thank all of our patients that took part in these studies which further our understanding of kidney cancer and ensure their diagnosis or treatment is not in vain.”

In the first two papers, over 1,000 tumour samples from 100 kidney cancer patients

were analysed in order to reconstruct the sequence of genetic events that led to the cancer in each patient.

The analysis revealed that there are three evolutionarily distinct types of kidney cancer.

The first type follows a slow evolutionary path, never acquiring the ability to become aggressive.

The second type forms the most aggressive tumours, which evolve through a rapid burst of genomic damage – including changes that affect large chunks of the genome – early on in the cancer’s

development.

This gives the tumour all it needs to spread to many other parts of the body, often before the primary cancer is diagnosed.

The third tumour type acquires the ability to spread through a gradual accumulation of genomic damage.

The third paper analysed the earliest events that trigger kidney cancer development.

It shows they can take place in childhood or adolescence, up to 50 years before the primary tumour is diagnosed.

The popular Peckham man was orphaned as a child and was thought to have no known living relatives

BBC’S HEIR Hunters tracked down the long-lost relatives of a Peckham man to benefit from his £225,000 estate, and found a great-nephew living just two miles away.

Friends of David Charles Graves, known as Charlie, contacted the “heir hunters” research firm Fraser & Fraser after he died at the age of 75.

According to researchers Charlie, who lived on Cheltenham Road, was “wellloved by neighbours. To all that knew him he was hugely popular and very well-liked,” but he had no direct family after being orphaned at the age of twelve.

Charlie’s friends contacted the heir hunters in the hope that if they traced any long-lost relatives they could attend his funeral.

In a race against time, researchers found that Charlie never married or had children of his own, but did have half-siblings.

Charlie grew up with his mother, Lily Goth, and his stepfather William Charles Sewell, who married in 1942.

After Lily’s death Charlie’s stepfather looked after him until he was old enough to work.

It turned out that his mother also had another child, Charlie’s half-brother, called Walter Charles Goth, born in East Preston.

They also discovered that his biological father, David Graves, also had four other children – giving him a total of five halfsiblings.

In total, the researchers found nine heirs to benefit from Charlie’s estate, worth £225,000.

Charlie’s maternal half-brother Walter married June Weldelken in the 1940s and had four children of his own.

Through them, Fraser & Fraser traced Charlie’s great-nephew, Jason Graves, who lived just two miles away in Bellingham, who said his own father and grandfather also shared Charlie’s love of golf and pubs.

During the course of their research, Fraser & Fraser discovered Charlie’s career as a printer saw him involved in one of the industry’s biggest disputes.

Starting in a factory producing wax paper to wrap bread, Charlie eventually joined The Mirror, before working at “fortress Wapping” in 1986, site of the stand-off between Rupert Murdoch and the printing union.

Unhappy with the deal offered, and seeing police called in to settle the daily unrest, Charlie would eventually leave the printing industry forever.

As Charlie died without leaving a will, there was a chance his estate would end up on a list of estates without next-of-kin, meaning his money could have gone to the government.

ESTATE DEMOLITION and the Old Kent Road area action plan were the hot topics at Saturday’s community hustings on planning and regeneration, held at Christ Church, Peckham.

Candidates from the major parties held a question time-style debate, chaired by David Fell, and organised by the Southwark Planning Network.

Conservative candidate Toby Eckersley and Liberal Democrat Damien O’Brien are vying for election in in London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward.

Representing Labour was the incumbent Rebecca Lury, candidate for North Walworth, with Eleanor Margolies, Green candidate for St Giles, representing the Greens.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was to hear that Tory and Green candidates have given cross-party support to back the campaign for residents to have a ballot on the future of their estates.

Toby Eckersley drew a round of applause when he said: “I entirely agree with Eleanor Margolies about the Aylesbury Estate ballot issue”, after she claimed refurbishment for the estate “makes so much more sense” in financial and environmental terms.

The council’s new Southwark plan – and Old Kent Road action plan – were also heavily debated.

The panel was asked if they would commit to returning the regeneration plans to the “option stage”, and specifically challenged on why industrial space would be lost if the proposals go ahead – despite being against the London Mayor’s policy.

Mr Eckersley said he believed the 20,000 new homes planned for the Old Kent Road’s regeneration was “excessive”, but warned that although the council might be able to revoke the plan, legally it might be unable to be reversed.

Ms Margolies committed to putting a break on the plan, saying: “We would not like to see any net loss of industrial space.

Mr O’Brien took aim at the consultation, commenting: “There is absolutely something that has gone horribly wrong in the consultation.

“It seems that the plans are going to be steam rolled through”, arguing that “development and regeneration does not mean that we have to lose industry”, but fell short of making a commitment to taking the regeneration plans back to the table, later confirming to the News that he was “quite sure it was not going to be possible”.

party has ran Southwark Council since their local election win in 2014, defended the council’s approach to consultation, saying: “What we need to be really clear about it is that we want to work with the community”, but did concede that “We need to be doing more”.

On the issue of housing, Mr O’Brien said the Lib Dems were pushing for rent to be tied to one third of income and a triple tax on empty homes.

And whilst Ms Margolies and Mr Eckersley found common ground on the ballot, Mr Eckersley’s claim that “massive borrowing for subsidised housing destroyed the fiscal integrity

of the country” was met with widespread disapproval.

Ms Drury confirmed a commitment to “mixed” developments including homes at social rent and affordable housing – saying Labour had rejected Lendlease’s initial plan for Elephant and Castle, pushing for a better deal, telling the audience: “We have 11,000 people on our waiting list.

“I do not think that anyone who earns £95,000 should qualify for an affordable house.

“The scheme did not go through because the community and councillors came together. Let’s keep pushing.”

councils from eight to five,” he said.

“I think that’s one of the areas we differ from the Labour council; they are very happy doing a top down one size fits all approach and I think that’s bad government and doesn’t get the best result.

“We are a richly diverse borough and they [constituents] need the support from the local councils.”

The election candidate said Southwark Conservative group had worked out where it could make savings and put forward amendments when the Labourrun council set its budget earlier this year, but hadn’t carried out “detailed work on that because we have two councillors and don’t have any professional support”.

“Until we get the council books and have the full briefing from the finance director we don’t know exactly how much pay we would have,” he said.

“I don’t think any of the things we’ve put in our manifesto are so off the wall

that someone would say we can’t afford them,” he added.

“I’m not going to make any wild promises that I can reduce council tax by X per cent but we would hope to keep it at or below the rate of inflation because council tax is a very large bill for individual homes.

“I don’t think it’s an outrageous claim to make – if you go back to the budget making in March the Liberal Democrats said they would freeze it.”

The Southwark Conservative group leader also said he would “certainly not be stopping the building of council housing” if his party took control of the council next month – but that council tenants should not have to take a property above the seventh floor.

“Kensington and Chelsea has very few sky scrapers but a very dense population and I think we should be doing the same wherever possible,” he said.

CONSERVATIVES ARE focused on increasing police officers in the borough, giving council tenants the choice over whether to live in highrise blocks, and giving power back to communities during this May’s local election.

Michael Mitchell, leader of Southwark Conservative group, said he would want to see green spaces protected, good school places for every child, and action to stamp out crime in the borough if the Tories took control of the council on May 3.

The Village ward Conservative candidate, who was one of only two Tories elected during the last local election, added that he would not make “widely ludicrous uncosted commitments” that he could not keep.

A PECKHAM woman has won an award for her work in a charity she set up to support families with the deadly genetic disease to which she lost her son.

Sara Hunt, 51, won the regional prize for Triumph over Adversity, hosted by the Federation of Small Businesses. She is the CEO of ALD Life, which supports families with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD).

“We were shocked and delighted to win the award. I want to thank my dedicated, supportive and passionate team of 20 staff who I wouldn’t swap for the world,” she told the News.

Alex Hunt was first diagnosed with the brain disorder in 2001, at the age of seven.

The symptoms of the most devastating form of ALD generally appear around this time in boys that previously appeared healthy.

Sara remembers that, coincidentally, she’d watched a documentary about the condition the previous year: “I thought: ‘oh my god, that must be the worst thing that could happen to anyone’. Then a year later, there we were.”

The disease affects one in 18,000 people.

As it affects the X chromosome, of which women have two, they can carry the disease symptomless.

The condition damages the protective sheath around the brain’s neurons, which is called myelin. Symptoms including blindness, seizures, loss of muscle control and dementia grow progressively worse, usually leading to death or permanent disability within five years of diagnosis.

“I needed to do something practical to try to stop what was happening to my son,” she said. “I met a few other mums going through the same thing and they seemed to appreciate my idea to start a support group.

When she first started the organisation in 2004, she used jumble sales to raise money. However, she quickly recognised that a charity shop may be a more effective way to fund the practical, emotional and financial support work they were providing.

The award recognises her remarkable perseverance. A week after Ms Hunt opened her first shop Alex broke his leg, an accident that meant he had to be home tutored for three years.

The second shop was opened in February 2008. By May, Ms Hunt’s

younger son had to receive an urgent bone marrow transplant as his scan showed the start of ALD deterioration.

As she was preparing to open her fourth

shop at the end of 2012, Alex sadly passed away and her staff had to take over. He was aged just nineteen and had just started attending a special needs college in

Bromley.

Throughout all this, Ms Hunt was working on a voluntary basis to run the charity. In autumn of the next year, she was employed as CEO. “Although I came to running my own business through the worst possible circumstances, it has turned out to be the best job ever. It’s been really cathartic to do something to help,” she said.

It’s also allowed her to meet other people affected by the devastating condition, which is so rare that sufferers tend to be geographically isolated.

“I’ve met some of the best friends I’ve ever had,” she said.

ALD Life now has five shops across south London with the fourth one, in Peckham, opened in memory of Alex. Ms Hunt has lived in the area since she was seventeen. Ms Hunt is now looking to the future, hoping to expand the activities the charity undertakes and to encompass related leukodystrophy conditions.

Officers and firefighters were called to Underhill Road at about 9.45am on Saturday, April 14, following reports of a substance inside and outside of a house.

The people within the property were evacuated as a precaution and the road was taped off while officers investigated.

James Barber, who passed the scene at 10.50am, said he saw about six parked cars covered in a pink substance.

“It appears that someone put some sort of pink powder over cars and someone suggested it had been put through some letterboxes,” said Mr Barber, who is standing as a Liberal Democrat candidate in East Dulwich ward.

“There were half a dozen cars covered in this pink powder; I passed it in the morning thinking it was weird and someone drunk getting up to mischief and when I came back about an hour later there were buses lined up not going anywhere and two fire engines and

police cars. There was someone in a blue and white checked helmet taking a sample from one of the cars from arm’s length and putting it in a test tube.

“They had tape around the cars and closed off a large part of Underhill Road where the Great Exhibition pub is while they investigated.”

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said the substance was not noxious or toxic in any way and no one was injured.

“We were called to Underhill Road at 9.45am on April 14 to reports of a substance inside and outside of a house,” she said.

“We evacuated the people in the house as a precaution.

“No offence was disclosed, there were no injuries and the road was reopened.”

A spokeswoman for London Fire Brigade added: “London Fire Brigade was called to Underhill Road at the junction with Barry Road at 10am on April 14. “[Fire crews] washed away a substance. The incident was over by 11.40am.”

New clinic for young people combines sexual health and substance misuse

A NEW integrated service in Southwark is hoping to provide better care for under 25s by combining support for sexual health and substance misuse.

The initiative, Healthy Young People (HYP), is also looking to move away from a clinical environment and into the community. Services will be delivered from Cambridge House and across the borough.

According to Public Health England, London has 81 per cent more Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) per 1000 people than any other region. Southwark has the third highest rate in the capital.

Young people are disproportionately affected, with one in three new infections occurring in those aged fifteen to 24. HYP is a partnership between the charities Brook, which specialises in sexual health for under 25s and Change, Grow, Live (CGL), a specialist substance misuse provider.

“As a result of severe public health cuts we are operating in an increasingly

difficult commissioning environment.

HYP is innovative in its approach and provides a one-stop shop for young people at a location that suits them,” said a Brook representative.

Young people are more likely to become re-infected with STIs, which contributes to infection persistence. The charity, which has helped 235,000 people across the UK, aims to tackle this through increased awareness and intervention.

Local people will be able to access confidential advice on their contraception choices, including long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). As part of the new centralised services, treatment for drug and alcohol abuse will also be available in the same location, as well as support on improving mental wellbeing generally.

The project, which is funded by Southwark Council, will also provide specialist training and support to professionals working with young people in the area.

“I hope that this service will have a positive impact on the health of our younger residents,” said Professor Kevin Fenton, Southwark Council Director of Health and Wellbeing.

Week of festivities for St George’s Day

A WEEK of festivities in Borough in celebration of St George’s Day will continue until Tuesday, April 24, writes Jessica Aszkenasy...

St George the Martyr Church kicked off its celebrations earlier this week, which will continue until Tuesday.

According to legend, St George, who was born in Turkey in around 280AD, saved a princess from being sacrificed to a dragon. He became a patron of England after Henry V’s victory against the French at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.

A poetry workshop with poet Anna Robinson will be held at 4pm at St George the Martyr Church, located on Borough High Street, on Thursday, April 19. The workshop is free but tickets do need to be booked online.

There will also be a performance of poetry inspired by the saint at 7pm at the church. The performance is open to all.

Festivities will continue throughout the weekend with a parade starting at St George’s Cathedral at 2pm on Saturday, April 21, snaking around to St George the Martyr Church.

The afternoon will continue with a St George and Dragonia play at 3pm around the corner at Tabard Piazza, followed by a community tea at 3.30pm back at the church.

Sunday, April 22 will start with a patronal festival service at the church at 11am, followed by a traditional roast lunch from 11am until 4pm at the Blackfriars Settlement, 1

The church will also host a Choral Evensong performance by the Martyr’s Voices and children’s choir at 6.30pm.

St George’s Day, Monday, April 23 will start with a ballad of St George and the Dragon at 3.45pm at the Red Cross Garden, followed by a chapter

mass at St George’s Cathedral at 6.30pm. At 7pm there will be a vigil at Crossbones Graveyard. Festivities will conclude on Tuesday, April 24 with the Wind Up Penguin Theatre Camp, a free interactive concert for children and families, from 1pm to 2pm at St George the Martyr Church.

POLICE ARE appealing for information after burglars stole an elderly woman’s late husband’s ashes from her East Dulwich home last week.

The woman, who is in her 80s, returned to her house on Dovedale Road just before 5pm on Monday, April 9 to see two men running away, and found that her home had been burgled.

Her husband’s ashes were missing, along with other valuables including a pearl and diamond platinum ring, a silver coin collection, a black sports watch and her cheque book and ASUS laptop.

Police say the victim and her husband had been married for 56 years before his death this February, and he had only been cremated less than three weeks before the break-in.

PC Tom Stoodley, from Southwark, said: "This burglary has left the

victim extremely upset - not only because of the intrusion, but because her recently deceased husband's ashes were taken.

“It is beyond comprehension how someone could be so callous and heartless as to steal someone's cremated remains.

“We are determined to find the people responsible, and recover these ashes for our grieving victim."

The ashes were kept in a burgundy cardboard box, slightly bigger than a shoe box, which was kept inside a burgundy paper bag with golden rope handles.

Both men were seen heading towards Mundania Road and were described as being medium build, with short hair, and carrying darkcoloured bags.

One wore a navy blue anorak and the other a dark-coloured coat.

Residents hope bus station works will finally end in June CANADA WATER

BUILDING WORKS carried out on Canada Water bus station will come to an end in June this year, according to a spokesperson from Transport for London.

Residents had complained that the scaffolding has been obstructing entry into the station, forcing people to take a longer route to access the bus stops.

Barry Duckett, chair of Canada Estate TRA, said: “It’s a public obstruction. When it’s rush hour it’s madness, people are condensed into a tiny gap. Wheelchairs and pushchairs can’t get past.”

Works to replace the glass started in January this year. Scaffolding had been erected under the glass

panels that line the station, to prevent the glass from falling onto the floor below.

Liberal Democrat politician and member of the London Assembly Caroline Pidgeon said: “While I appreciate that TfL are now finally dealing with the issue of dangerous glass panels that has existed at Canada Water bus station, it does seem to me that TfL haven’t done a great job in keeping people updated about these long delays and providing local people with a full explanation for the inconvenience they have had to face.”

TfL said: “We are replacing the glass because it has reached the end of its operational life. We’re sorry to hear that people were disrupted by our works and we are looking into these reports.”

Brain injury ‘been a four year hangover’

FAYE HETHERINGTON, 30, is running this year to raise money for Headway, the charity that has supported her since a brain injury changed her life.

“It’s been a four year hangover without the fun of the night before," she said. "It stripped back my life and forced me to pause for a period of time when all I wanted to do was speed forward and get on with life."

At the age of 26, Faye was living a busy life working at a digital agency in Shoreditch. However, when she was jogging one morning, she hit her head on the pavement. Her friend took her home, assuming it was a minor bump.

"I remember waking up on my bed at 5am the next day, still wearing my running clothes," she said. "I went to the bathroom and saw my

range of London boroughs on the way – including Southwark.

face all battered and bruised. I had no idea what was going on."

She was told by doctors that after two weeks rest she’d be back to full health. However, the brain injury forced her to return to living with her parents in Reading, unable to return to work or her normal life.

"Nothing was showing up on my brain scans, and I found that hard because I knew that something was wrong. I started to think I was imagining it all.

About nine months after the accident, Faye started to receive support from her local Headway group. Things started to improve.

"Eventually, I was able to start attending a peer group. It was brilliant to talk to other people who could empathise with me. It meant so much to hear from other people going through similar challenges," she said.

Now Faye has returned to London and is living independently. She still struggles with headaches and energy management, but is managing her symptoms to work full-time.

"Without Headway helping get me back up from my fall, it would have been a very different, very scary journey back to recovery for all the family," she said. Olympic champion Kieran swaps oars for trainers

FORMER OLYMPIC rowing champion Kieran West is swapping oars for running shoes as he runs the London Marathon for the first time this year.

The 40-year-old will be completing the marathon on the 22 April to raise money for diabetes charity JDRFUK in honour of his goddaughter, Tabitha, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes three years ago, when she was just eight-years-old.

“It’s a pretty lifechanging diagnostic and it’s tough for a small child to go through all the rigmarole of injections.

It’s about having someone on your side, JDRF help find a cure and provide support,” West told the News.

The former Dulwich College and Cambridge University student is excited to be back on the track after retiring from international rowing in March 2008.

His team won a gold medal for Team GB in

the rowing men’s eights at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, after which he was awarded an MBE for services to rowing. He was introduced to the sport by his father at Kingston Rowing Club when he was tenyears-old, and entered his first ever race in 1989.

West, who currently resides in Bermondsey, says that music has been a key part in training for the 26.2 mile race which starts in Greenwich and finishes at the Mall, in front of Buckingham Palace.

“It’s a big personal challenge for me because I’ve never done this before. I couldn’t do it without music. I’ve done whole runs on Eminem’s Lose Yourself on repeat. I need a bit of noise to get me going,” West told the News. FOREST HILL resident Samantha Cook, 36, is taking on the London Marathon to raise money in memory of her sister, who passed away from a stroke in 2008.

“I wanted to do something big to mark the ten year anniversary of Sue’s passing away. It had to be a significant challenge, and for me

FARID SARWARI, 23, has been part of the London City Runners club, based in Southwark, for almost six years. This year, they have 43 people in the race.

The club meets three times a week in the local area and have been training together for the London Marathon since January.

After a longer Sunday run, they often go for breakfast or brunch.

“Our members are of all ages and abilities: it’s a really lovely social atmosphere,” said Farid.

Farid, who works at UCL, is raising money for UNICEF, who he learned about from appearing in a campaign video about child refugees. This will be his third marathon in as many years.

KEVIN DOWNEY, a 59-year-old originally from Bermondsey is running his 29th marathon this year.

He started running 30 years ago to raise money for children’s charities when his daughter Laura was born prematurely. This year he’ll be running for Children with Cancer UK – bringing his total up to almost £90,000.

Last year, for the first time, his daughter Laura ran alongside him.

“It was a really emotional moment, running through the barriers holding hands. Laura won’t be doing it again though – she’s been put off for life,” he said. Kevin always stops on the track at Surrey Docks and Jamaica Road to talk to old friends and doesn’t take himself too seriously: “I hardly train – I just run round the park a couple of times.

BOBBY OWEN, a black cab driver who used to live in Rotherhithe, is looking forward to returning home this year as he runs the London Marathon for the first time, in aid of Barnado’s.

“We used to live on the marathon route in Rotherhithe so we’re looking forward to showing the kids our old house. I lived in the area for fifteen years after leaving home, in Howland Way and Redriff Road, so it will be great to see our old neighbours,” he said. The father-of-three, who now lives in Kingston-upon-Thames, was inspired to raise money for the children’s charity as he himself was adopted as a child.

Until January, Harry, who works at an infant school in Dulwich, says he’d never run before in his life – except to catch a bus.

This year, he’s raising money for the 7th Camberwell group, based in Dulwich, of which he’s a group leader.

He said: “With all the cuts going on, supporting young people is more important than ever.”

Rod’s also running to raise awareness and encourage more people to get involved. Over 50,000 children are currently on a waiting list to join due to a volunteer shortage.

JAKE CLEMENTS, 24, has lived in Bermondsey all his life. Born with a heart murmur, Jake is raising money for Chain of Hope to help children overseas have life-changing heart surgery.

He said: “From a young age I’d have yearly routine checkups and throughout my teenage years my health slowly deteriorated. I wasn't able to do many sports and even a common cold would mean I’d be off school for a week.”

After finishing his A-Level exams, Jake had open heart surgery on his doctor’s advice, as his condition had developed into something more serious. He chose to have a replacement valve which had a shorter life span but which would give him more active choices – like running a marathon.

“I want to help children with heart conditions that aren’t as fortunate as me growing up and receiving treatment,” he said.

So proud of Millwall girls

TWO OF our own ran the Brighton marathon last weekend, which is a gruelling course with many hills.

The 26.2 mile course starts at Preston Park and goes out past Brighton Marina to Rottingdean and then back past the pier up to Portslade and Southwick, before heading back to the finish line past the pier.

Ellen Butler, from Bermondsey, ran for Multiple Sclerosis Kent as her dad has this and goes to the centre where the money raised is going to. She did amazingly, as she never has been a sporty type or a runner. Ellen is a true inspiration to us all and proves that anything is possible if you want and need to do something in life. Everyone is proud of you. I am absolutely appalled by the decision of Southwark’s councillors to fell 10 acres of woodland, an oasis of calm and beauty, a nature reserve, in order to sell burial plots.

This is shameful & shocking, putting profit before nature yet again. Surely we know now not to do this?

This is a place where people can walk with nature in the middle of London, home to bees, butterflies and birds it's a jewel in the desert. It's a healing place, a place for children who would otherwise not have this experience, a place for education, away from the screens and chaos that children have constantly in the city.

The council has removed the woodland preservation order, it's unbelievable!

Surely this can't be allowed to happen?

It would be a crime against nature, an irreplaceable loss, goodness knows, London needs all the green spaces it can get!

As part of the Million Hands Project in partnership with Water Aid, I organised a sponsored walk from our hut to Peckham Rye park on 19th March to celebrate International Water Day on 22nd March .

Fifteen Beavers, three Leaders and a group of parents walked in the snow, freezing cold temperature and pitched dark, muddy, slippery grounds in the park. We wanted to highlight the importance of access to freshwater.

We raised a total of £611.44 for Water Aid aiming at providing a water pump and sanitation for a community school in Madagascar.

We were played to our seats by Johnny Valentine and the Broken Hearts who then went on to play a core role in the show. Two rebellious teenagers, Josie and Teddy, are getting ready for a big night out. What they lack in cash they make up for with attitude.

They arrive with their respective ‘gangs’ of Teds and Judies and meet in a crowd of newly minted

teenagers hanging out in a bombdamaged church. They spar for a while until they bond over a mutual love of Johnny Valentine and his band. Hearing that he is playing a secret gig, they launch a desperate plan to find the money to get in. When Teddy remembers the old German gun that is hidden in his mum’s house, things can only end badly.

The play is written in verse which is handled beautifully by the two lead characters. Molly Chesworth is wonderfully sharp as Josie.

There is more than a bit of girl power in this production as Freya Parks is equally tough as bassist Jenny O’Malley; at one point quipping to the drummer, “Do you want to feel my feminine touch across your jaws?”

There is not a weak performance in this highly energetic show. The choreography and dancing is great.

The audience is younger than average and there was a real sense of fun in the venue from the start.

The older generation were not shy when the invitation was issued at the end to get onto the dancefloor, during the gig of rock and roll classics which finished the night.

I recommend you get your Brothel Creepers on and get down to the Vaults prepared for theatre and dancing.

Personal favourites included the all female troupe of bendy, sleek and slender gymnasts, who seemed to defy all limits of physical flexibility with their incredible teamwork and strength.

The show features a range of spell-binding, seat-gripping performances that are sure to leave you wanting more. You may also get the opportunity to land a cheeky selfie with the crew as they greeted fans and supporters in the chilled out Underbelly gardens. This show definitely isn’t one to miss, make sure you tell a friend to tell a friend!

Suitable and engaging for all ages, Circus Abyssinia is an allround winner, and a great trip out on the town.

High energy circus

THANKS TO the team over at the Underbelly Festival we had the great opportunity to see the amazing Circus Abyssinia - an Ethiopian circus troupe resident at the pop-up Southbank venue until the 20th of May, writes Else Cullen.

It was a night made of Ethiopian dreams, a spectacular show filled with amazing acrobatics and great humour that can be enjoyed by all the family! Working to an up-beat and lively soundtrack, the performers dazzled the audience with a range of gymnastic, acrobatic and juggling acts, all sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Circus Abyssinia is definitely a favourite ‘one-to-watch’ with its rich, cultural, Ethiopian influences and high energy performances from all the cast.

How journalist Lorna V turned to solo performing

WHEN JOURNALIST Lorna V joined Time Out magazine as Sell Out (lifestyle) editor back in 1996, she believed it was fortuitous that she sat next to the theatre and dance editors.

She confessed to her new colleagues that she had a theatre writing dream.

ntering the Vaults theatre at Waterloo for the first time, I was unsure if the bombed-out rubble strewn space was a symptom of Arts underfunding or deliberate. It was in fact designed to immerse the audience in the post war 1950’s London, which was home to the Teds.

But it was only when former actor Donald Hutera stood in as dance editor that she went one step further and confessed her wildest dream. ‘One day when I grow up I want to do a one woman show,’ she whispered.

She did indeed begin writing for theatre, and went on to be shortlisted for the Verity Bargate Award. But the performing dream was forgotten until Hutera reminded her of it in 2014. The veteran arts journalist and regular critic for the Times newspaper had started curating his own festivals and kept inviting her to write and perform solo work. Lorna kept refusing because she felt shy and had no acting training. ‘You’ve grown up now, it’s time,’ said Donald Hutera. And so began a development of female characters performed in venues in and out of London, all with a dance - and specifically tango - connection.

‘My hobby is Argentine tango and what has kept me persevering, because I’m far from a natural dancer, is the sense of community one feels from dancing, and how people’s emotional journeys are soothed through dancing,’ says Lorna. ‘Dance is a healthy religion. Whilst I was going to lessons and dancing almost daily for several years, I planned to write a play about different characters, so I spent a lot of time observing. I was fascinated by the impact of dance on people’s emotional journeys.’

When she eventually agreed to write and perform for Hutera’s dance and performance art festivals under the auspices of the Giant Olive Theatre and the GOLive festvals, it was obvious this was the right forum to explore creating characters with a dance link.

She was advised by Hutera and other critics to focus on the female stories and to go with being a solo performer. ‘What can be more nerve-wrecking than going on stage for the first time or any time? The answer is doing so in front of critics who have seen everything there is to see and don’t mince their words. But I benefited hugely from this,’ says Lorna.

‘Being other women, dressing a different way, behaving entirely unlike myself, has been a fascinating experience, particularly being aware that each character concealed a universal story,’ she continues. One of these characters began as a difficult, rambling tango teacher and became Lorna’s alter ego.

‘I’m an introvert who is very intense and analytical, and my dance journey has not been easy – I still can’t erase the embarrassment of going to a Zumba class in 2000 and moving left instead of right, and falling over myself in a salsa class around the

Her first full length comedy solo show Bailamos Opa! with Dance Guru to stars Aliki Mbakoyianni (previewing at the Blue Elephant on April 25 and 26) is in fact a calling for everyone to embrace dance. It’s about a former dance diva and movement guru to the stars, Aliki Mbakoyianni, who arrives to deliver a lecture on the history of dance but finds herself reflecting on her own dance star-studded history and disastrous love-life. The show is billed as a cultural comedy with a meaningful heart.

‘I created Aliki because a friend said it would be interesting to see the perspective of an older dancer-dance teacher having to deal with young competition. The writer me made the character Greek-Argentine because the newbie-actor me didn’t feel able to pull off an Argentine. Being of Greek descent I’d have something to draw on.’

Whilst developing and testing the character, audiences have often not realised that Aliki is a fictional person (because of appearing at festivals with other acts and no announcements in between). ‘Aliki has a unique twist on history, and her best friend is Madonna – I’ve had people say afterwards they had no idea about the history and ask what Madonna is really like. Then they’re shocked when I don’t speak in Aliki’s accent. I’ve worked very hard to create a Greek-Argentine accent, and a way of speaking English that reflects the character has travelled a lot.’

The hardest challenge has been pulling off being a professional dancer, and more so with the full length show. ‘I’ve had to train hard.’ But out of the necessity to train came the most enjoyable part of the process. ‘There was no escaping learning the dances of my Greek heritage. Greek dancing is the most uplifting thing for the soul.’

The show’s director Athena Mandis shares Lorna’s Greek heritage and cast her last year in the short film From Southgate to Brighton (co-written and co-directed with Dino Jacovides). ‘I’m really excited to be directing Bailamos Opa! It’s going to be a very fun two nights at the Blue Elephant theatre. PIMP MY RAMEN

But one stall that always catches my eye is Pimp My Ramen. The offering? Burger patties cased in ramen noodles instead of buns, writes Holly O’Mahony...

Harry delos Santos, 31, is the mastermind behind this creation. His inspiration was Keizo Shimamoto’s original ramen burger, which took New York’s world-famous food market, Smorgasboard, by storm in 2013. I was living in New York the year the ramen burger took off and vividly remember the hype around this culinary fusion. People would queue for well over an hour to get their hands on one. I always regretted not trying the ramen burger myself before returning to the UK, so the sight of Harry’s stand in Greenwich Market stopped me in my tracks.

Harry had heard about Keizo’s ramen burger and decided to have a go at creating his own. To his surprise, it worked a treat.

He began experimenting with the perfect combination of fillings and soon after, his classic ramen burger was born: an Aberdeen Angus beef patty in ramen noodle buns with shredded lettuce, Monterey jack cheese, a fried egg and a choice of chilli sauce. In March 2014, Harry applied to sell his creation at London markets and Greenwich offered him a spot.

How did Harry’s creation compare to Keizo’s original, I wondered. “I’ve met people who have tried both,” he tells me. “Obviously they were eating mine at the time, but they said it was better,” he recalls with a bashful smile.

For Keizo in New York, the ramen burger was a marrying of his Japanese heritage with his American upbringing. For Harry, who moved over to the UK from the Philippines in 2009 – originally as a nurse – the creation was a chance to infuse a staple of American cuisine with flavours from his home country.

With his original burger proving a success, Harry expanded the menu to include a pork option. Braised pork is a popular dish in the Philippines, plus Harry was aware of the pulled

pork zeitgeist sweeping across the UK and US. He also added an Indian-inspired veggie patty, which soon became the most popular item on the menu and is now Harry’s favourite too – arguably because he’s eaten the others so many times. The bad thing about running a market stall, he tells me, is that it becomes difficult to eat your own product.

I decided to sample the classic, but with a little bit of pulled pork too, on Harry’s insistence. Looking at the noodles, woven neatly together to form the burger buns, it was a mystery to me how they stayed so compact (blanching them is the answer apparently). Biting into the burger, the taste and texture is unexpected, although not unpleasant.

In fact, the soft, warm noodles

combined with the thick, salty patty are the epitome of comfort food. If you’re suffering from a hangover (which I was, just a little) the ramen burger is the perfect cure. The egg and cheese complete the feast, while the lettuce adds a touch of subtle, crunchy goodness and the chilli sauce lends the dish a tang that keeps each mouthful interesting. My one

criticism would be the thin paper wrap the burger comes served in.

Noodles are no substitute for bread when it comes to soaking up the juices, and so a foil wrapping or paper plate would be more appropriate – especially for the pulled pork.

So, what’s next for Harry? “I want to explore more Filipino foods but in

a different vessel,” he tells me. “I’m curious to try tacos. The Philippines was a Spanish colony for ages so we have a lot of similarities in our food to Mexico.” While I’ll be keeping an eye out for Harry’s next creation, those yet to sample the ramen burger should treat their taste buds to this near unique fusion at Pimp My Ramen.

170 years of Kennington march for rights commemorated

RESIDENTS HAVE joined forces to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the day thousands marched to Kennington Common to fight for better rights for working class people.

On April 10, 1848, tens of thousands of people gathered on Kennington Common (now Kennington Park) ready to deliver a petition with two million signatures to Parliament with six demands for democratic reform.

The demonstration, organised by Chartist leaders, saw working class people demand the right to vote at a time when only those with property and land were allowed to, as well as the right to vote by secret ballot in elections.

The Army and 85,000 special constables were brought onto the streets in anticipation of unrest but the rally ended up being far from it.

In the end, the Chartist leaders decided to send only a small delegation to Parliament to hand over the petition and the whole thing

ended in a compromise with only minimal violence, according to artist Richard Galpin, working as project manager of the Kennington Chartist Project.

“Some people say it wasn’t a failure and would instead say it was a significant achievement and an interesting time.

“The number is always disputed about whether it was150,000 people who gathered on the common on the day or less.

“There’s a famous photo of the demonstration which really helps to see that there were women and children present; it doesn’t look like a crowd bent on a bloody revolution, and there’s this sense of coming together.”

Richard is part of the Kennington Chartist Project, set up by residents to mark the pivotal moment in history.

The project, backed by The Friends of Kennington Park and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the National Lottery, will hold a series of events throughout the year in a build up to the 175th anniversary.

“In the years after the demonstration the common was closed and it became a public park for Kennington,” said Richard.

“It was a key moment in the whole history of democracy and it’s something that hasn’t really been talked about that much in the past so it just seemed like a really good opportunity to commemorate it.

“There’s no permanent memorial in the park so some people are aware of

its history but others aren’t.”

“What happened in 1848 on Kennington Common was a really exciting moment in history which has a lot to say about what’s going on today,” he added.

“There’s an interesting link to the suffrage centenary this year as well; the Chartist era came earlier but sort of linked to women becoming more involved so it seemed a good time to raise awareness of what happened in Kennington Park and build up towards the 175th anniversary in five years’ time.”

Four flag bearers walked from Russell Square, Clerkenwell Green, Stepney Green, and Peckham Fields to Kennington Park on Tuesday, April 10, to commemorate the 170th anniversary and to launch the project.

They represented the four divisions of London Chartists and marched in solidarity with all under-represented people in 2018.

The project aims to explore why what happened in 1848 is relevant to 2018, in the age of Brexit, Trump, #MeToo, and Black Lives Matter.

A celebration will be held at Kennington Park on Saturday, July 7, featuring a schools parade, exhibition and Chartist songs performed by a community choir.

There will also be a series of free walks, talks and workshops from April to October.

MILLWALL LIONESSES are scrambling to secure funds that will help them see out the season, after revealing this week that financial difficulties have left them on the brink of going bust.

The club said it needs a “substantial influx of money” to complete its current campaign. An official Crowdfunding page set up this week set a target of raising £10,000 and had reached £6,500

by Wednesday morning.

Millwall Football Club supported the payment of March wages to Lionesses players and staff. They said they were “continuing to show its support” for the Lionesses.

The Lionesses have six more games left this season (after they played Aston Villa on Wednesday night), five of them away.

Two of them are in London but there are also long trips to Durham and Sheffield, as well as Brighton on the last day of the season.

At one point this week their FA Women’s Super League fixture at Durham was in doubt. It is one of two games that given the distance they need to stay overnight for, the other Sheffield Ladies which is scheduled for May 6.

Lionesses Interim General Manager Dan Logue revealed that Durham have been helping source cheaper accommodation, while players from other clubs have also contributed to the fund.

“As it stands all Lionesses players and staff have waived remuneration until the end of the season,” Logue said. “Ten grand is just to get us through and pay the

bills. We have two games involving travel and overnight stays, they are a bit of a trek.

“The Durham General Manager has offered their support.

“I only knew how bad the situation was last Friday, I’ve not been involved in any of the financial side. I had been told I had to secure funding for next year. We had started to do that, there were a few irons in the fire.

“Ten grand will go some way to helping us see it out but we are more than that in debt. We need help from creditors. If we go to the wall then no one will get anything and I certainly don’t want that to happen.

“We’ve done this off our own back, we’ve received donations from the

community, from girls from different teams, which has been great.

“The community has rallied around us.

I’m a Millwall fan and we’ve always been one of top teams that give to charities, it’s a community-driven club, as people know, and we always help each other out.”

The Lionesses were unbeaten in the league before they faced Villa (after the News went to press) and are chasing Doncaster Belles at the top of the table.

Manager Lee Burch paid tribute to those who have supported their cause at such short notice, and to his players.

He said: “We spoke to the players and staff and outlined the situation to them.

The consensus was we wanted to continue to finish what we started.

STANSFELD LOST their second game in three days going down by a single goal to champions-elect Punjab United at Foxbury Avenue on Monday night.

It was Punjab who started more brightly and the Stansfeld defence were soon in action. But Stansfeld gradually got a foothold in the game and had a useful effort from Sam Ryan tipped over the bar in the tenth minute.

In the fourteenth minute a lightning break from the Punjab left-winger saw him cut inside and fire a leftfooted shot which looked destined for the bottom corner before Stansfeld’s ‘keeper Lewis Collier’s outstretched boot temporarily cleared the danger.

However, the ball bounced around in the six-yard box and it was Punjab’s Nick Donaldson who reacted to knock the ball into the net.

Stansfeld responded well to the setback and launched several attacks

with wide men Billy Jolley and Jake Williams sending in dangerous crosses that Billy Shinners headed on target but he was denied a leveller by the visiting stopper.

In the second half Stansfeld continued to push forward in search of an equaliser but in doing so left plenty of room at the back for Punjab to exploit. They broke through on several occasions but Collier kept them at bay.

The result keeps Punjab on course to go up as champions. Stansfeld are thirteenth in the table.

“Up until [Tuesday] there was a big question mark over Durham, it’s the furthest one we have to travel to and we can’t travel the day of the game, it would involve getting up and 5am and there is the risk of injury.

“The Crowdfunding has been superb, we’re so thankful for that. We’re hoping it can get us through to the end of the season but it’s one game at a time at the moment. We’re looking better for Durham and they have supported us as well.

The club’s statement this week read: “Millwall Lionesses regret to inform supporters, and the wider football community, that due to significant financial discrepancies the club finds itself in a position whereby it may soon be forced to go into administration.

“During recent weeks, and particularly so following the resignation of its chairperson and sole director [Emilie Perry] on March 28, the club has exhausted all external funding channels, including Millwall Football Club, who have provided assistance well in excess of budgeted sums and whose support allowed for March wages to be paid to players and staff.

“Moving forward, if the club is unable to secure a substantial influx of money, for example through additional sponsorship, then the Lionesses will regretfully be unable to complete to current campaign.

“This is of course a worst-case scenario and all associated with Millwall Lionesses are working extremely hard to secure its short and long-term future.

“The club will keep supporters aware of future developments.”

Lions make it seventeen unbeaten to stay sixth

THE SUNSHINE finally came out on Saturday but a cloud briefly moved over Millwall’s play-off hopes before Steve Morison came to the rescue to earn a point at Sheffield United.

For someone who hasn’t had a huge number of scoring chances this season, Morison took his opportunity with conviction and calmness, sidefooting Jake Cooper’s long ball to the net first-time a minute after the Blades had taken the lead.

Morison’s number had been up and literally would have gone up on the fourth official’s board had he not made that decisive contribution.

By his own admission it hadn’t been one of his better games as he and Lee Gregory struggled to make much headway against the hosts’ three centre-backs.

Tom Elliott had warmed up and was primed to come on. Afterwards Morison was asked if he thought it was him about to be withdrawn and he responded, with a withering look, “yeah, it’s not rocket science, is it?”

Morison’s honesty reflects the team’s and it was also their character and belief that was evident after Leon

Clarke had opened the scoring and the foundations shuddered at Bramall Lane such was the wall of noise that crashed around the ground.

Another side might have wilted in this cauldron, given the home team had been building real momentum to the extent that it wasn’t a surprise to see them breach a defence that had kept five clean sheets in the previous six games.

Sheffield United are a relentlessly positive side. It’s simply not in their DNA to take a backward or even sideways step and even their wide centre-backs were accorded opportunities to overlap the wingbacks in front of them.

United scored 92 goals last season and though they obviously haven’t been as prolific a division higher they had still scored three more than Millwall. Boss Chris Wilder has managed to turn Clarke, the 33-yearold nomadic striker with sixteen previous clubs, into a goal machine.

Millwall were aggrieved as the corner that led to the opener shouldn’t have been given, before United recycled possession and Clarke nodded in after Jack O’Connell had headed the ball back across goal.

magnificent save to deny George Baldock. Morison said afterwards that he is a striker who thrives the less time he has, when it’s more about instinct, and the same probably applies to Archer.

His mistakes this season have come when he has had time, albeit still only fractions of a second, to decide what kind of save to make: palm clear, punch away, collect first-time. But when Baldock got in behind Millwall’s defence from John Fleck’s cross and flicked the ball towards the top corner the message from Archer’s brain to his hand arrived in a nanosecond and it was the home fans who were left with their hands on their heads in disbelief.

He could do nothing to prevent Clarke scoring, but then it was Millwall’s experience that informed how they would get back into it. And a fair amount of pragmatism as Cooper launched it long, Morison ran off Enda Stevens’ shoulder and cushioned a lovely effort past Jamal Blackman (above) in front of the Millwall fans.

Archer still had two superb saves in his locker, first when he tipped Lee Evans’ long-range shot over the bar and then he showed cat-like reflexes to spring low to his left to paw away substitute Billy Sharp’s prodded

effort that seemed certain to go in.

At the final whistle Millwall were fifth, Middlesbrough’s win over Bristol City later in the day dropping the Lions down a place, though they had Burton to thank for beating Derby County to ensure they stayed sixth. That was Burton’s first home win in eighteen league games and it has echoes of last season when rivals around Millwall failed to take advantage of slip-ups.

“I would have taken a point before the game because there is so much at stake for both clubs, and for us a point is huge,” Neil Harris said later.

Derby and Middlesbrough meet on Saturday, hours after Millwall host Fulham. The dream scenario is that by then the Lions are four points clear of seventh.

It’s still hard to believe it can happen, though after the game Morison was speaking in terms of “when”, not “if”.

“We’re not feeling any pressure,” Morison said. “People keep going on about it but the only time we’ll feel pressure is when we’re stepping out at Wembley on May 26. Then it will be real, when we’re that close to the Premier League.”

They can take another giant stride towards the home of football on Friday night.

MILLWALL’S SCINTILLATING form that has taken them to the verge of the play-offs has one drawback for Tom King – he’s had to postpone his summer holiday.

King was supposed to be going away with Jed Wallace but the pair and their families will need to rebook as Millwall’s season could potentially extend beyond May 6, the last day of the regular Championship season.

Goalkeeper King, currently on loan at Stevenage, has to stay around anyway because if anything were to happen to Jordan Archer or Dave Martin he would be next in line to take over in goal.

King, 23, has kept a close eye on how his parent club have done since the start of the year, and said within the squad there was confidence that they could make an impact in the second tier.

“Everybody outside the club didn’t think we could do it,” King says. “But everyone inside the club looked at the other teams and thought, ‘they’re not too much better than us’.

“Now they are putting together a formula that works. The lads have done unbelievably well to get into this position.

“I think a lot of people would have taken fourth-last before the start of the season, but now you’re looking at it with three games to go and the run they are on and if they get into those playoffs they are going to be full of confidence.

“The next three games are going to be incredibly tough, but in February or even March no one thought it was on.

“Everyone has to believe in it now.”

King will have finished his stint at Stevenage by the time Millwall face Aston Villa on the last day and will probably be beginning the process of moving out of the hotel he has been staying in since January.

He was so determined to make the move to the League Two club for regular first-team football that he offered to stay in a flat and pay the bills, but Stevenage arranged the hotel, and King recently prompted some quizzical looks from staff when he arrived carrying his own TV from home – because the one in his room was too far away from the bed.

“I’ve got all my basic stuff back in Portsmouth with my family,” he explains. “I’m a focused figure. I could have no excuses if this didn’t work out.

I wanted to get my head down and work hard, and everything is good here. It was a bit strange at the start but it is a nice hotel and everyone has been really accommodating.

“The lads at the club also invite me for dinner a few times a week.”

So comfortably has King settled in that during Champions League fixtures recently he has a routine.

“There is a lady here who is a Liverpool fan,” King says. “So when they were playing Man City I watched it in the bar with her and was shouting for City. Usually to wind her up I avidly support the team that Liverpool are playing!”

It’s that kind of laidback persona that has helped King, and he has been an ever-present for Stevenage, playing nineteen times as they secured their League Two status with plenty of games to spare. He wasn’t always as chilled, he admits, saying he used to be more “hotheaded”. Last Saturday, one of the people who helped him work on his temperament was guarding the goal at the opposite end of the pitch.

David Forde left Millwall last summer after nine years to join Cambridge United. The former Republic of Ireland international claimed the bragging rights over the younger man when his side

won 2-0, but King speaks highly of his ex-Lions colleague, who he will meet for dinner this week.

“I’m really friendly with Fordey,” King says. “He’s a really good guy, on and off field. When we were at Millwall he helped me a lot and it also helped me watching his performances.

“He used to be in the same predicament as me, he was hot-headed, as I was, but he learned how to channel it. For me it was about the bigger picture. I was released by Crystal Palace and maybe had a chip on my shoulder that I wasn’t good enough. Fordey helped me and Kevin Pressman [Millwall’s goalkeeping coach] helped me to channel it correctly, telling me I didn’t have to prove everyone wrong every time I played. I remember we played Palace in a youth game [after joining Millwall] and I was trying too hard.

“Fordey was open with me in those early stages and I learned a lot.”

King also learned much from what could have been a harrowing experience. He was in goal when Millwall went to Tottenham for their FA Cup quarter-final last season, the lastever cup tie at White Hart Lane.

Millwall conceded six, but King viewed the experience positively.

He explains: “The biggest thing to remember after that was they were at the pinnacle at the time, one of the best teams probably in Europe.

“I said to a friend after the game it was probably the greatest experience of my life and he replied: ‘What are you talking about? You lost 6-0.’

“But nothing will come close to as bad a result as that and the next day I still woke up, did my training, did my recovery and cracked on. It was two days after my birthday as well. I looked at the Tottenham players and thought, ‘that’s where I want to be’.

“And I never want to lose 6-0 ever again.”

It was also a taste of first-team football, his tenth appearance of seventeen last season. But then Millwall signed David Martin last summer as experienced back-up, and it was too late for King to go out on loan.

Lions boss Neil Harris picked Martin as number two to Jordan Archer, Martin deputising in the league when Archer missed the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa. It left King knowing his chances of playing were slim.

“I initially wasn’t happy, and the manager understood, but I played my role and whatever the team needed from me I did,” King says.

“Dave was brilliant. I had numerous conversations with him one-to-one to ask him his opinion. He took a big risk leaving MK Dons last summer with no set club lined up. I could pick his brains, he’s been around the block.”

King decided he had to leave on loan in the last transfer window and when he went to Stevenage he linked up again with ex-Millwall defender Joe Martin, brother of David. King says it was “a running joke that his brother had come to Millwall and taken my place”.

“But,” King adds, “it was time for me to have some of the spotlight. I wanted to show people what I could do.”

Stevenage sacked Darren Sarll in March, Dino Maamria taking over. King impressed both men, with the latter setting the side the target of a top-half finish. They are currently fifteenth.

“I did well under the previous manager, I had conversations with him and he was pleased with my level of performances,” King says. “It was important for me that I maintained that level and, no disrespect to the previous manager, but there has been an upturn in results.

“We play Coventry on Friday [at the same time Millwall host Fulham] and I want another clean sheet to see if we can get closer to the top half of the table.”

SHAUN HUTCHINSON has identified why Fulham have been so effective this year – and it is a threat he will come face-to-face with on Friday.

Fulham are the only side in the top four divisions in England with a longer unbeaten record in the league than Millwall.

They haven’t lost in 21 fixtures, four more than Millwall, a run that has taken them from twelfth to third with the potential to go second if they win at The Den. Aleksandar Mitrovic has been one of the key players inspiring their red-hot form. The striker was poised to move to French club Bordeaux on transfer deadline day in January, but was instead persuaded by his fellow Serb, Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, to join their promotion challenge.

The Cottagers had a plus-fourteen goal difference in 29 games before Mitrovic made the switch on loan from Newcastle, but his twelve goals in fourteen games and the focal point he has given their attack has contributed to boosting that difference by seventeen in their fourteen games since.

He scored in five successive games in February and March and at 6ft 2ins he can also mix it with the division’s toughest defenders.

Hutchinson and centre-back partner Jake Cooper certainly fall into that category, inspiring Millwall to eighteen clean sheets this season.

Former Fulham defender Hutchinson, 27, has started all 43 league games.

Cooper, who was out injured earlier in the campaign before regaining his place when Byron Webster damaged his cruciate ligaments, has played 35 times.

Mitrovic cost Newcastle £13million when he joined them from Partisan Belgrade in the summer of 2015, but Millwall’s defenders haven’t been fazed by any of the big-name strikers that they have come up against this season.

If the Lions can manage to limit the Serbian international’s effectiveness then it will go some way to giving them a chance to extend their unbeaten run.

“They were missing that real number nine up top and I think they've found that,” Hutchinson said. “He [Mitrovic] has come in and he’s good at everything.

He’s good on the ball, he’s not afraid to get involved in the physical side as well.

“We all know they like to pass the ball around really well, and they've got the players to do that. Adding him to the squad has given them another dimension. That’s probably the turning point for them.

“We’ve come across different sorts of players all season. But he looks like he’s on top form. He’s been very clinical and ruthless at the moment with his goals. So we’ll be looking to nullify him and do the best we can to stop him from being a threat.

“We’re based on being solid as a team and everyone working hard on our shape. We’ll look at how they've been breaking teams down and, come Friday, we’ll be ready and set to give them a good game.

Mitrovic and Sessegnon a danger to Lions play-off chances

“We’ve shown we've got players who want to work hard for each other and they want to graft, there are no selfish players, everyone is working as a team, there are no individuals. It shows how far you can go with a limited budget.

“If someone makes a mistake, everyone wants to get them out of trouble.

Everyone wants to pull their mate out of trouble and run that extra mile for him.

When you've got that and the trust in the player next to you, it makes you relax on the pitch. It lets you do what you can do when you know everyone around you is doing their job as well.”

There is another player Millwall can’t take their eyes off when they meet their London rivals. Not only was Ryan Sessegnon, 17, named Championship Player of the Season this week, but he also nabbed the Young Player of the Season and Championship Apprentice of the Year at the EFL awards.

Also this month, the England under-21 international was the first player outside the top flight to be nominated for the PFA

Young Player of the Year award.

It all adds up to a daunting task for Mahlon Romeo, and Hutchinson has been impressed with a player some are suggesting should be part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad this summer.

“For what he’s doing at his age, it’s just incredible,” Hutchinson said. “When I was 17, I was just breaking through the youth team at a club [Motherwell] and he’s doing it at a high level. Credit to him. We’ll be looking to nullify Fulham’s threats and he’s one of those threats.”

If Mitrovic or Sessegnon manage to break in behind Millwall’s defence then Jordan Archer will have to produce the same kind of form he did in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Sheffield United.

Archer produced two brilliant reaction stops to deny George Baldock and Billy Sharp, as well as tipping over a Lee Evans effort that was bound for the top corner.

gets his fair share of flak from his teammates, but Hutchinson believes that all feeds into the spirit in the dressing room.

“Listen, it’s probably one thing I enjoy about this club, we all give each other a bit of stick,” Hutchinson continued. “If you ever see anyone getting a little bit ahead of themselves, they generally get put down because the boys don't want that.

“Someone could score a hat-trick and people could still give him stick. It’s just the way it is. It keeps everyone on their toes and keeps everyone pushing. No one takes it personally.

“Obviously we tend to give away a lot of long-range shots and it’s difficult when there are bodies in the way and deflections. But I thought the reaction times of [Archer’s] saves were brilliant.

We know he’s capable of making those saves.

the fans get behind them, they're a real force. I thought it was difficult at times, and a draw was a great result. It’s a tough place to go. Big teams have gone there and struggled, so it just shows where we’re at. We’re going to these away sides and putting in solid performances and coming away with a hard-earned point.”

Hutchinson left Fulham in 2016 before winning promotion last season and he is now a lynchpin of a side exceeding all expectations.

He is pleased with how the move has worked out.

“There are a few staff behind the scenes there that I speak to now and then,” he said. “The players that are still there as well, I wouldn't say it’s every day but I do keep in touch with them.

“To be honest, it’s worked out for both parties. They're doing better without me and I’m happier here doing better without them. When you look back at it now, it was probably the correct decision from both parties.”

IT IS a tantalising thought. By Friday night at about a quarter to ten Millwall could be four points clear of seventh place with two Championship games left of the 2017-18 season.

The Lions are unbeaten in seventeen league games. They haven’t lost at home since November 4 and even then it was a robbery as Jed Wallace was harshly sent off and Burton scored from their only shot on target.

The stadium is a sell-out. Last time they played under the lights and in front of the Sky Sports cameras on a Friday night they had their biggest attendance this season against another London rival, 16,601 at The Den to see Steve Morison get his first goal of the season in a 1-0 win over QPR. Morison this week spoke in terms of “when” not “if” Millwall reach Wembley. It would be the third season on the trot.

Derby’s recent wobbles mean Millwall’s top-six fate is in their own hands.

Just one problem: the team they are up against on Friday is the only one in the top four leagues with a longer unbeaten run than them.

Fulham’s last loss was against bottom club Sunderland in December. The Cottagers were twelfth then, eighteen points off second compared to a point now.

TIM CAHILL was put on the spot at the weekend when he was asked if he would prefer to appear in a fourth World Cup with Australia or win promotion to the Premier League with Millwall.

Cahill and Australia reached the second round in 2006, the group stage in 2010 and 2014 and qualified through the play-offs for Russia this year.

The 105-cap international is hoping to make Bert van Marwijk’s squad this summer and become just the fourth player to score in four World Cups.

But before all that he could help Millwall achieve something they have done just once in their history: promotion to the top flight of English football.

minute equaliser at Craven Cottage last Saturday has knocked Fulham off their stride and they are still wobbling when they get to south Bermondsey.

Millwall had the opposite feeling at Bramall Lane when Morison levelled to ensure his side stayed sixth and then Derby’s loss later at Burton would have buoyed the Lions further.

Fulham’s United States international centre-back believes Friday’s clash is a must-win for his side as they aim to go two points ahead of Cardiff in second.

“There’s no two ways about it,” he said. “We know what the situation is and we know that starting with Millwall on Friday night we have to win. There’s no getting around that.

“Saturday evening was tough to take but we’ve drawn games in this run so it’s a game we have to now put behind us and get ready for Millwall.”

Ryan Fredericks is a former teammate of Morison’s at Millwall. The right-back played fourteen games for the club on loan from Tottenham in 2013-14, scoring the winner on his debut against Ipswich.

He warned that Fulham are confident of bouncing back after their four-game winning streak was ended by the Bees.

He said: “We’ve had a few disappointing defeats this season and we’ve always come back stronger.

I’m sure we can do that Friday night.”

Harris could name the same side for the eleventh time in the last thirteen games. Millwall have lost just twice in 24 league games since Fulham defeated them 1-0 in November.

The Tigers were looking for a penalty before the break when the ball appeared to strike the hand of centre-back Christian Mbulu, but their appeals were in vain.

The hosts went in front six minutes into the second half through Keane, who won possession in the final third before running towards goal and firing past Sandford.

NEIL HARRIS is calling on Millwall fans to make The Den “loud and hostile” when the Lions go head-to-head with London rivals Fulham on Friday night.

Millwall boast a seventeengame unbeaten league run, but will face the only side in England with a longer record without defeat. Fulham haven’t lost in 21 games and since then have moved from twelfth to third in the Championship table,

a point off Cardiff.

Millwall are back at The Den after two away games. More than 16,000 fans watched their two previous home fixtures, against Bristol City and Nottingham Forest.

Fulham are set to bring 2,000 fans with them across London to see if their team can move into second place in the Championship.

Harris praised Millwall fans for their support last Saturday against Sheffield United, when they often could be heard over more than 25,000 home supporters at Bramall Lane.

Despite the game being moved

to Friday night, making it more difficult to attend, and live coverage on Sky Sports, it’s set to be another sell-out.

“The atmospheres recently have been brilliant,” Harris said. “Saturday was a great atmosphere to be involved in. I thought the Sheffield United fans were excellent and our fans were top drawer again, they’re absolutely loving it at the moment.

“The Den in recent weeks, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, those games in particular, were great atmospheres.

the lights and live on Sky. It doesn’t get better than that for a Millwall team.

“We need it every bit as loud and hostile as it has been in recent weeks. It does make a difference. They are the best games for Millwall players to play in, the big games that really matter.

“Forty-three games gone in the league and we are in sixth place in the Championship, that’s some effort by the players.

“I’m telling the players to enjoy it, and they are. The fans have got to do the same – come and enjoy it.”

King, 23, signed a deal in January until 2019 before joining Stevenage on loan.

He has been a regular for the League Two side, playing nineteen times as Stevenage head for a mid-table finish.

King joined Millwall after being released by Crystal Palace and made his debut last season before going on to play seventeen games and keeping six clean sheets.

He was frustrated in his efforts to challenge Jordan Archer for the number one goalkeeper’s jersey when Neil Harris brought in David Martin on a free transfer and made him second choice.

Martin extended his contract for another year earlier this season, prompting King to seek a move away. He held talks with Forest Green before deciding to join a club higher up in the table.

“I’m going to get back and see if I can muscle my way in and challenge,” King said. “I want to be in the best shape I can. I’ll have a chat with the manager [Harris] whenever their season ends and see what his plans are.

“I intend to do what I do every summer and get myself into the best possible condition. If it doesn’t work out for me then I will throw my name into the hat for another move away because I want to play games.

“I’m confident enough in my ability that I can play in any team, but I’m more than happy to see what the summer brings.”
