There is no simple way to deal with knife crime

A

S MORE than a hundred young people take to the streets to pay their respects after a sixteen-year-old boy was stabbed to death on Monday night, yet again a community is left asking ‘How can we stop the killing?’.

It is rumoured that the stabbing of Mohammed ‘Moe’ Dura-Ray in Walworth was a result of a gang attack.

Trident, the police squad that examines gang related crimes, is investigating and across social media comment after comment is made on how best to stem the continuing problem of knife crime.

There is no simple answer – gang crime is a part of a larger social deprivation issue. Some will see a solution in dealing with the root causes for young people getting involved in crime in the first place, while others want a strong tactic used by police to combat the attacks as they happen.

Clearly there are gaping holes in what is happening to help on the ground at a community level and by the police on the frontline.

Borough Commander Zander Gibson recently posted a video of himself online promoting the controversial stop and search tactic as an effective way of reducing knife crime.

In the face of public concern about racial profiling lying behind the disproportionate amount of young black men who are stopped, Mr Gibson said he expected the use of “respectfully conducted, targeted stop and search” to increase in areas where knife crime was more prevalent.

The number of stop and searches carried out in the borough dropped by half in the last year – from 1,253 in June 2014 to 627 in June this year – after the Met Commissioner ordered improvements to make sure the practice was more “intelligence-led” and “transparent”, as public complaints of officers unfairly targeting young men from ethnic minorities at random came flooding in.

In a News report in April on poor knife crime detection rates in the borough, a Met spokesperson said knife crime in Southwark had actually reduced by twenty percent in the previous twelve months.

Southwark crime statistics, which do not describe the type of weapon used, show an increase of ‘woundings’ from 861 incidents in 2013-14 to 1,093 in 2014-15, while carrying an ‘offensive weapon’ remained roughly the same. Avril Jones, co-chair of the Southwark Safer Neighbourhoods Board and independent advisor to the borough police, said stop and search was “valuable”.

However, in this same edition today as the reporting on the tragic death of Moe Dura-Ray, we also have an article on how we could lose all our PCSOs in one fell swoop if cuts to neighbourhood policing go ahead this month.

Labour’s London Assembly Member for Lambeth & Southwark, Val Shawcross described this as “the final nail in the coffin for neighbourhood policing.” This apocalyptic warning is mirrored by youth charity groups, with one charity leader in a recent article in the News saying penniless organisations are “holding back the gates of hell.” Jennifer Blake has been working at Peckham’s coal face for eleven years – helping young people get out of gangs, drugs and abuse with her organisation Safe n’ Sound. Herself a former gang leader, Jennifer used to receive funding from Southwark Council and the Met police, because her work was seen to prevent bloodshed on our streets.. But she is now running her award-winning charity single-handedly with eleven volunteers while her mum puts money on the electricity meter, after local authorities and police forces had their funding cut by central government.

Welcome to cardboard city Artist creates 21-foot model of a postdisaster Rye Lane in his own living room

LAST YEAR life as we know it was wiped out in Peckham and just a few lone souls could be seen wandering around an overgrown postapocalyptic car park in the mist – at least that was the scene created by local artist Nick Cobb.

This year you can walk the full length of Rye Lane in Nick’s living room as he exhibits his latest creation as part of the Nunhead Arts Trail.

This eerie 21-foot-long cardboard construction is again set in a post-disaster Peckham in which sea levels have risen, breaching the Thames barrier and creating a canal running down Rye Lane.

The busy waterway echoes Peckham’s industrial past on the Grand Surrey Canal,

but the almost ruinous buildings tell us SE15 has fallen into disrepair. In a fantastical twist, winged figures can be seen perched on the rooftops, and Nick himself admits he has not yet decided who or what they are and is keen to see what viewers will make of it.

“That’s one of the interesting things about it – feedback can determine how I see it myself,” said the 56-year-old father of two. Nick, an artist and photographer, who has lived in the area for 30 years, has spent nearly a year hand-crafting the 21foot-long, inspired by a model of Peckham town centre made by local people to help envision the new station square.

More than one hundred people marched in memory of Moe (pictured inset)

MORE THAN one hundred young people marched from the Aylesbury estate to the scene of where their young friend was killed, to pay their respects on Tuesday afternoon.

The mourners set off from the Wendover block, where sixteen-yearold Mohammed ‘Moe’ Dura-Ray used to live, just after 5pm and walked up to where the police had cordoned off the crime scene at Steedman Street.

The forensic tent marking the spot where the young Manchester United fan died from multiple stab wounds shortly before 11pm on Monday night could be seen a short distance away in

Canterbury Place.

The crowd was a mixture of friends and family, with Moe’s fellow students from both Walworth and Globe academies in attendance.

One of the march organisers, Moe’s friend Femi Bademosi, was moved by the turnout. He told the News: “It’s to show support to Moe. This is beautiful.”

One of his former classmates said Moe’s death was a surprise to her because she thought he was “so strong” after he survived a previous stabbing “Everyone loved him. Everyone is just shocked. Everyone who knew him is just here to pay their respects,” said another school friend. “I think this is beautiful.”

When the crowd reached Steedman

Street they were told by the police that they could not lay their flowers at the crime scene as they had intended, because a fingertip search of the scene was still ongoing.

The 120-strong group walked peacefully around the perimeter of the Newington Estate and came to a stop under the railway bridge back at Steedman Street, where flowers were laid and candles were lit.

Prayers were said for Moe and his family as many mourners broke down into tears.

Moe’s head teacher at Globe Academy, Matt Jones, said the whole school had been “deeply saddened” to hear of his death and passed his thoughts and prayers on to the family.

MP and local resident Neil Coyle told

the News he was concerned the incident could lead to a string of gang reprisal attacks and the loss of more young lives. “This is an awful tragedy for the family. I hope the Met’s Trident team will get on top of this quickly and make sure there are no reprisals.”

Mr Coyle, who usually walks through the estate twice a day on his way to and from work, said the alleged ‘ambush’ “didn’t come out of nowhere”, as youths were seen gathering on the estate from 7pm.

“I’m aware that there was a build-up of tension before the incident and I’m asking for reassurance from the police that they responded to any concerns raised by residents.”

Tributes continue to pour in for Mary

TRIBUTES HAVE continued to come in for Mary O’Leary, the “kind and good-hearted” greatgrandmother who was crushed by a lorry in Peckham High Street on Friday September 4.

The 76-year-old was out doing her shopping when the collision happened as she crossed the road towards the top of Rye Lane.

Southwark Travellers’ Action Group (STAG) have this week paid tribute to an “independent lady”

whose loss has been felt across the Traveller community in Peckham.

Kathleen Ryan, of STAG, who knew Mary for fifteen years, described the news of her death as “an awful shock” “She was good natured, quiet but always lovely to talk to and very friendly,” said Kathleen, who misses seeing Mary at her gate at home in Brideale Close, where the greatgrandmother of fifteen lived for more than 30 years.

Mary’s brother Timothy told the News last week that her death “took my heart”.

“She was the only sister we had and

she is dearly missed.”

Mourners are invited to pay their respects to Mary as she will be laying in rest at F A Albin & Sons chapel on Tuesday September 29 from 1.30 to 4.30pm. In traditional Irish style, Mary’s coffin will then be taken to St James the Great chapel in Elm Grove, Peckham, for a 6pm mass.

The following day a funeral mass for Mary will be held at 11am at St James the Great before the cortege proceeds to Camberwell Old Cemetery.

The family welcomes anyone who knew Mary to come to the church and the viewing.

Seven men between the ages of sixteen and 54 have been arrested and are being held in custody at different police stations.

Fifth arrested in murder probe

PECKHAM: A fifth person has been arrested in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Ola Raji, shot dead in the street around the corner from his old youth club in Peckham on April 21.

A 25-year old man was arrested on Tuesday and bailed to return in midNovember.

When the police arrived in East Surrey Grove at around 10.30pm they found the former Sacred Heart pupil in a critical condition after he had been shot and stabbed. He was pronounced dead later that night. Two men and two women were previously arrested in connection with the incident and have since been bailed. Anyone with information can call the incident room on 020 8721 4205.

Campaigners ‘very disappointed’ with Bakerloo Line report

CAMBERWELL campaigners say they are “very disappointed” by a report on the Bakerloo line extension which seems to favour an alternative route down the Old Kent Road.

Transport for London released the report last week, which responded to issues raised in a public consultation held between September and December last year.

The extension, which will not open until 2030, could run from the Elephant and Castle to Lewisham via Peckham and Camberwell or the Old Kent Road, or both.

Although 64 percent of the 15,346 responses to the consultation were in favour of the Camberwell route compared to 49 percent supporting the OId Kent Road option - the report highlights the need for the project to be funded by future development.

The Old Kent Road has been earmarked as an Opportunity Area for 2,500 new homes, which could help to bankroll the extension, and the TfL report states that although it is considering the needs of the capital’s existing residents, “a key driver of the

proposed extension is enabling new development in south east London. It is unlikely an extension can happen without this new development.”

Campaspe Lloyd-Jacob of PACT (Peckham and Camberwell Tube) said: “This is about people who already live in London and struggle to get to and from work needing to be given priority over people who are not yet here.

“It’s terribly unfair. What’s the point of asking the question if they’re then going to ignore the answer? It’s pretty disappointing,” she added.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said he was continuing to lobby for both routes as they were both areas which were currently underserved by public transport and said he had kept this option on the table.

But Campaspe is not optimistic after a TfL representative told a meeting of the Camberwell Community Council that split routes were not favoured in general because of difficulties with timetabling.

TfL is still reviewing the suggestions made by the public and is preparing to launch a second round of consultation in 2016 on more detailed proposals.

Raise cash at ‘wonder day’ RECYCLING GIANTS Veolia will open the doors of their Southwark plant this Saturday and will raise money for the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

A special “Wonder Open Day” will be held on September 19 as part of the Open House London festival, which celebrates city’s architecture.

Money raised will be put towards the News’ Evelina appeal, which is currently just £7,500 short of its £100,000 target.

The day will feature interactive exhibits to teach children about materials and recyclables, as well as wild bird displays, a bouncy castle and face painting.

BERMONDSEY BOY Ben Purdy was killed after his girlfriend’s jilted ex organised a revenge attack to hunt down the teenage plumber, the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

Michael Bagnall, 22, organised the attack on 18-year-old Ben to ‘teach him a lesson’ after he started dating his exgirlfriend Ashley, it is said.

Bagnall, from Rotherhithe, allegedly recruited his uncle, Andrew Bayne, 37, his cousin Reece Bayne, 19, and a 17year-old, who cannot be named, to track down Ben and his friends.

When they did, Andrew Bayne shot Ben in the head and threatened to gun down one of his friends, the court heard.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC said: “It looks as though Ashley and Michael had split up in July last year and in September Ashley had started going out with Ben Purdy. Albeit Michael appears to have found a new girlfriend, it must have rankled with him that Ashley was seeing Ben Purdy.

“Over a period of weeks leading up to the shooting of Ben Purdy, the prosecution alleges that Michael Bagnall was repeatedly abusive towards Ashley and sent threatening messages over the telephone and on Facebook. After things had gone on for some time, Ben had had

enough.”

He enlisted two friends, Callum Malone and Jack Walker, to confront Michael Bagnall on November 23 last year, arming themselves with a motorbike chain and a metal pole.

However, when they arrived at the Silwood Estate, they were chased away

Mr Aylett said that Lee-Ann was brandishing a mace during the “skirmish”.

“This was undoubtedly a very stupid thing to have set out to do and it cost Ben Purdy his life”, said Mr Aylett of the decision to confront the Bagnalls. “Ben and his friends fled at the first sign of real violence from the Bagnalls. The prosecution alleges that Michael Bagnall decided Ben needed to be taught a lesson.”

The court heard Bagnall recruited Andrew and Reece Bayne and the 17year-old who all set out to “hunt down” Ben Purdy in a car.

Mr Aylett said: “Those four in that car all knew about the gun and they were all party to a joint enterprise, a common purpose, a plan to hunt Ben and his friends in order that the gun might be used to cause really serious harm to someone if not actually to kill them.

“When they found Ben and his friends

only a few minutes later, Andrew Bayne fired the gun at Ben Purdy's head, and Ben sustained fatal injuries.”

Mr Aylett said Andrew and Reece Bayne then chased after Ben’s friends, catching up with Callum.

“Reece Bayne hit him with the truncheon and Andrew Bayne put the gun to Callum’s face and told him to open his mouth,” he said.

“Andrew Bayne was thinking about shooting Callum as well, but Reece Bayne realised Ben Purdy had been hit and he called out to Andrew Bayne ‘We need to go, he's dying’”.

Paramedics and police were called to the incident, in Mossington Gardens, at around 1.55pm.

Ben was pronounced dead in hospital the following day.

A PECKHAM man has been put on the sex offenders’ register and ordered to pay £500, after he was found guilty of sexually assaulting a fourteen-year-old girl on a train.

He said “I’m not trying to chat you up or anything,” before he started a conversation in which he tried to get the girl’s phone number and offered to take her out and “show her a good time.”

Blackfriars Crown Court heard how the girl gave the 66-year-old a fake phone number but became very uncomfortable as Finn said he would call her up, take her to the beach and give her a set of keys to his house.

He was sentenced on Friday to two months in jail, suspended for two years.

RESIDENTS ON the Aylesbury Estate are being warned about the perils of Right to Buy from leaseholders who are going through the “nightmare” of selling their homes back to the council for demolition.

Those who previously bought their homes off Southwark Council at a significant discount through the government-subsidised scheme, now have to sell them back so the Aylesbury can be knocked down and more than 3,000 new homes built in its place.

Some leaseholders are currently in a legal battle with Southwark over the offers they have received for their homes, which they say are under what they should be.

Valuations are usually arrived at by looking at the sale prices of similar properties in the area, but as there is nothing comparable to the Aylesbury in the borough, surveyors for the council and the leaseholders choose different examples, which produce disparate valuations.

“It’s a very stressful process to go through,” said Sandy Stewart, a leaseholder on Northchurch who is due to move out of her home of more than

twenty years next week. As a trustee of the Creation Trust, a charity set up to support residents on the Aylesbury, Sandy has helped to set up a ‘Buyers Beware’ meeting this month, to inform residents who may not have to move for up to ten years, about the pitfalls of becoming a leaseholder on an estate earmarked for demolition.

“We want to be sure they understand the process,” said Sandy, who says the property valuations are “never what people expect.”

“It’s not all the great deal it may seem.

The leaseholders in the early phases have been living with this nightmare for four years or more,” she added, though Sandy is satisfied with the deal she got and is happy to be moving into Notting Hill Housing Trust’s Camberwell Fields development as soon as she gets an exchange date.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, previously told the News any leaseholder could take their case to the tribunal if they did not agree with the council’s valuation and Southwark would make revised offers based on the court’s conclusion.

The meeting to advise Aylesbury residents on the Right to Buy process will be held on September 23 at Thurlow Lodge from 7pm.

Cllr Fiona Colley, Southwark Cabinet Member for Finance, Modernisation and Performance, said the council was “ready and willing to support refugees.”

She said: “I can understand that some of your readers have concerns about our limited council resources being diverted to help refugees when there are already people in need in Southwark. I think there is a balance to be struck. Councils have made it clear to government that they must provide adequate funding to support any refugees we take in.”

Stabbing on street ‘plagued’ by all-night parties

RESIDENTS OF a street plagued by all-night parties have demanded the council take action after a man was stabbed on their doorstep in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Eye-witnesses told the News the large crowd gathered along Manor Grove and Hatcham Road in Peckham at 6am was typical of the loud events keeping them awake every weekend.

The police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident in which a 40year-old man was stabbed a number of times as he tried to leave an event in Hatcham Road in his car.

He remains in a stable condition in hospital and no arrests have yet been made.

A resident of Manor Grove, who witnessed the attack but did not wish to be named for fear of reprisals, said she and her neighbours had been complaining to the council about the nuisance and danger of the all night events for years.

“This has got to stop,” she said. “I’ve come home of a Sunday morning and seen a woman going to the toilet on the floor and my neighbour caught a bloke doing the same thing up against his house. It’s disgusting what we’ve got to put up with.”

THE FORMER Peckham Road Fire Station - and sausage factory is set to be developed into a cultural centre after an anonymous donation to the South London Gallery.

The gallery was gifted the site and has subsequently been granted a quartermillion pound Heritage Lottery Fund grant to restore the grade-listed building. A further £1.5m has been earmarked to be released by the HLF when £2m has been raised from other sources.

The building dates from 1867 and is

the earliest surviving example of a purpose-built fire station in London.

The now-derelict, four-storey building will be transformed into a new art space, allowing the gallery to expand its exhibitions and events programme.

It will also host educational programmes and act as a space where the gallery’s archives can be put on public display for the first time, while also preserving the historic fire station for future generations to enjoy.

The building operated as a fire station for 50 years after opening and subsequently became the offices and factory for Kennedy's Sausages.

The cultural centre is expected to open in 2018.

SOUTHWARK COULD lose all of its Police Community Support Officers [PCSOs] in one fell swoop if cuts to neighbourhood policing go ahead this month.

The borough’s neighbourhood policing teams could be reduced to one single police officer per ward (down from three PCSOs, two PCs and a sergeant just three years ago) if the Met’s management board approves the proposed cuts at their meeting.

There are currently 33 PCSOs in Southwark, according to the latest Met Police data, all of whom could all face the axe in this latest round of funding cuts.

Labour’s London Assembly Member for Lambeth & Southwark, Val Shawcross, described the plans as “the final nail in the coffin for neighbourhood policing.”

“This is the clearest sign yet that Government cuts are decimating London’s police force... and mean far fewer officers on the beat in our communities acting as the eyes and ears of the Met,” she said.

The cuts would come on top of previous reductions in PCSO numbers, with 110 support officers (or 77 percent) lost from Southwark’s streets since May 2010.

The police confirmed a reduction in PCSOs was on the cards as the Met is expected to save at least £800 million over the next four years.

Commander Lucy D'Orsi, who is leading the neighbourhood policing project, said: "Like local communities we very much value PCSOs and their role in community engagement - they have been an integral part of the Safer Neighbourhoods model from the start.

However, the financial pressures we are facing mean that we have a duty to consider all options available, in order to meet those challenges and to ensure we deliver a quality policing service to London's communities."

Stephen Greenhalgh, Deputy London Mayor for Policing and Crime, said no decisions had been made as yet and neighbourhood policing remained a priority for the Mayor, Boris Johnson.

“We have put 2,600 extra officers into neighbourhoods, as well as increasing overall officer numbers to 32,000.

Therefore, the case for any change would have to be made powerfully, alongside a public consultation,” he said.

“It is likely that tough choices will need to be made, and we are aware that the Met are considering ways in which they can balance the books and manage possible reductions in their budget beyond 2016,” he added.

Europe tour blows brass band away

THE CAPITAL’S youngest brass band made their international debut at Disneyland Paris this summer during a three day tour-deFrance.

Southwark Children’s Brass Band, which has members as young as seven, won the Club Europe Concert Tours’ Proud to Perform competition, bagging them a fully funded three day music European

tour.

The band was borne out of the Southwark Children's Foundation, which aims to give underprivileged children experience of art, music and culture, and has since grown to around 50-60 players aged between seven and fourteen.

Band Trustee, Patty Harper, said the highlight of the trip was definitely the performance at Disneyland Paris, and the go on the

rides afterwards. “The students were more than up for the challenge of a serious performance and coped with the microphones, the stage layout and the sound check really well.

They were completely on show the whole time which I don't think they expected. The venue just blew them away. The whole process with the concert at the end really pulled the band together and they sounded fantastic.”

JEREMY CORBYN’S younger brother, housing campaigner and meteorologist Piers, has told the News that the Labour leadership result signals as a ‘new era’.

The week after Jeremy stormed to victory, Piers, who lives in Walworth, said: “Southwark’s MPs must now respect democracy. They need to ask themselves whether or not they will accept these policies, in particular ending austerity and everything that goes with it.

“On a person level it is fantastic, and almost unbelievable – it’s a new era. The Murdoch press are going hell for leather to attack him, so I’m asking all his supporters to join Labour and protect Jeremy’s new way.”

He said: “It has been an interesting few days but I think everyone deserves a fair crack of the whip.”

A BERMONDSEY café owner launched a professional cookery course for local youngsters last week at a special event attended by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc.

Mike Donovan decided to open the Bermondsey Community Kitchen after looking out of his Duns Deli window down the Blue and seeing young people with “nothing to do and nowhere to go.”

The kitchen will give trainees a chance to learn new skills and receive a Level 2 City and Guilds

PECKHAM: A security firm has been brought in to guard the vacant BP garage in Peckham Road after a small number of caravans set up camp there last week.

The occupants were moved off the site on Tuesday and metal fences put up around the empty site, with two guards stationed there by Omni Security.

One guard told the News the owner planned to build flats on the land, but no planning application has yet been submitted.

CONCERNED NEIGHBOURS of an ‘outstanding’ primary school set to near double in size are asking the courts to review the council’s decision to give the expansion the go ahead.

Residents living near Keyworth Primary in Faunce Street, Kennington, submitted more than 50 objections to the council’s planning committee in April, but with primary places desperately needed in the borough, the proposal to build a two storey building to accommodate nine new classrooms was approved.

The development would allow the Ofsted-approved school to take in 630 pupils, 269 more than it does currently.

overwhelmed with a heavy increase in school traffic, neighbours living in Sharsted Street and Faunce Street have requested a judicial review of the council’s decision.

The campaigners insist the councilowned Kennington Enterprise Centre site in Braganza Street would be a more suitable option for the expansion.

Southwark has asked that the

judicial review process be expedited, as it needs to engage a contractor this month in order to complete the work in time for the next school year.

Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark’s cabinet member for children and schools, said the claimants’ request for a written hearing was “firmly rejected” by the High Court. As everyone awaits the outcome of their request for an oral hearing, Cllr Mills said the council had

asked for the process to be accelerated “so that it doesn't have a further damaging impact on the provision of new school places in the area.”

Sharsted Street resident, David Doyle, said: “It has been a hugely time and money consuming fight that has led to substantial resentment within the community - all avoidable if constructive community engagement had been used from the outset.”

The adults fled the property before the fire brigade arrived on scene and were treated by the London Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.

The blaze ripped through four rooms on the basement floor and was brought under control just before 6am.

Two fire engines from Deptford and Peckham fire stations attended the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A TWO hundred-year-old pub could be lost forever if plans to turn it into hostel units get the go-ahead.

There has been a pub called the Masons Arms standing on East Street since 1807, but a planning application to turn the ground and lower floor into seven bedrooms would see the historic front changed permanently.

The building owners – Pilotdown Ltd - who converted the rest of the building into hostel rooms in 2013, say the alterations to the exterior would be “minimal and retain the majority of the existing architectural detailing.”

as well as nine new low level windows fitted - changes Walworth Society chair, Jeremy Leach, described as “damaging to its magnificent Victorian façade.”

“We are really dismayed at the current planning application for the Masons Arms which will see it change permanently and no longer be able to function as a pub.”

Pilotdown Ltd pointed out in their application that they had been trying to market the ground floor space as a café or restaurant to let for two years to no avail and that the additional hostel units would provide housing to those who could not afford other forms of accommodation.

CAMPAIGNERS FIGHTING to save a much-loved Borough boozer are raising a glass after securing ‘Asset of Community Value’ status – but supporters are being urged to “continue the fight.”

The Gladstone in Lant Street is currently under threat of demolition, after developers submitted a planning application to build a tower of flats on the site.

However, its new ACV status will be a major point of consideration for Southwark Council’s planning committee, who will meet to discuss the application once all objections from residents have been submitted.

Chloe Beeney, of the Save The Gladstone Arms and Boroughood campaign groups, said she was ‘delighted’ that the watering hole had obtained ACV status.

She said: “Whilst it is only the first step in the fight to save this community institution from offshore property developers, it puts us in a much stronger position. More importantly, it is recognition of the importance of the Gladstone and other pubs like it to communities all across London.

“I’m half-American, and sometimes it takes an outsider to appreciate pub culture. The French have café culture, the Germans have beer house culture and the

British have pub culture. It’s more than just a place to get bladdered, it’s a social hub. I don’t even really drink.”

However, she made clear that achieving ACV status was “just the first hurdle.”

She said: “Even now the council could just say, ‘that’s all well and good but the flats will still be worth more and we’ll knock down the pub anyway’. This is just the first hurdle - we still really need to force it to the council.”

Steve Silcock, chair of the south-east London branch of Campaign for Real Ale, co-ordinated the pub’s AVC application. He described the new status as a “huge boost” and urged other punters across London to apply for their own pubs too.

BERMONDSEY FOOTBALLER Gilly Flaherty is appealing for help in finding a winter home for her free community fitness club.

The Chelsea Ladies star is desperately hunting for a new space now that the nights are drawing in and Southwark Park becomes unusable due to a lack of light.

The group, which Gilly trains for free every Tuesday evening, believe in ‘taking back’ fitness training and making it accessible for everyone.

The 24-year-old defender told the News: “Gyms are expensive and sometimes intimidating so my fitness group is free and sociable. People come down and make new friends, they laugh around. It doesn’t matter what shape you’re in or how you look - there is no pressure.

“I come from the area and because I’ve done well in football I want to do something for Southwark, so this is my way to give back to the community.”

or 35 people. She supplies all equipment and is only looking for an indoor space until the evenings brighten up again next spring.

The said: “Ideally someone will read this and want to help out a community group by giving us a space for free, but a discounted space would also be fantastic.

We just need a decent-sized hall that we can use for just one evening a week.”

Gilly, who has previously played for Millwall Lionesses and Arsenal Ladies, won her sixth Women’s FA Cup this summer and last week earned her first call-up for the English national team’s matchday squad. The team will face off against Estonia on September 21.

We’ll meet again... war memorial to be rededicated BERMONDSEY

War tunes and march planned for event

A MEMORIAL to Bermondsey men who fell during World War One is set to be officially rededicated this weekend, after being put in safe storage during construction work.

The memorial will be unveiled on September 19 at 2 Old Jamaica Road, the site of the old military training centre, which is currently being converted into flats.

The grade-listed memorial details the names of 970 men who served in the 22nd Battalion of the Queen’s Regiment, which used to be housed in the old building. Most of the men were from the old Bermondsey Borough.

Peter Swanson, president of the Old Comrades Association, told the News: “It’s been a long process getting the memorial rededicated as we’ve had to jump through a hot of loops, but we are certainly looking forward to Saturday.

“When the battalion left in 1915 it was almost exclusively Bermondsey men. This should be important to the community. We are honouring these men not just with a formal rededication, but also by coming together to show that even after the military training centre is gone, the importance of these men still remains.”

The rededication ceremony will begin at 10.30am with a musical performance of old war tunes. A march by army reserves, cadets and re-enactors will take place at 11am, with speeches and the official unveiling taking place soon after.

A PETITION against a proposed study into traffic safety in Dulwich has been signed by over 200 people.

In June, Dulwich Community Council agreed to dedicate up to £10,000 for a feasibility study into road calming measures for Melbourne Grove, after neighbours campaigned for safety measures to be introduced.

Suggestions include potentially shutting off the street to through-traffic with a barrier.

A previous study had shown that around 15,000 cars a week use this route, with over half of them driving above the 20mph speed limit.

‘ROAD SAFETY CHANGES JUST AREN’T VIABLE’

However a group of other residents are now campaigning against a study taking place.

Spokesperson Robin Crookshank, a former Lib Dem councillor, said: “It’s been looked at before. It’s like every five years this comes up. I think the first one was in 2004 or 2005 when Tessa Jowell held a meeting in the church. We had people standing up and crying and saying ‘oh, we’re worried about our children’.

“But it just isn’t viable. People are comparing Melbourne Grove with smaller streets that have been closed off, but they just shouldn’t. They’re trying to compare apples and pears, it wouldn’t work and it’s not worth the money.”

Over 200 sign petition to STOP traffic study campaigned for by other residents

Robin, who doesn’t drive, claims people who signed an initial petition infavour of action against the road’s traffic had since changed their mind and signed her petition.

She said: “People who signed that first petition have stopped me in the street and said ‘oh my God, I didn’t want a barrier!’. They are worried about what will happen to the road now.”

However, councillors and pro-road safety campaigners in the area are “bemused” at the anti-study campaign, claiming that a barrier was just one of several measures that could be taken to make the road safer.

They say that the study, which may take place next spring, will take a wider look at road safety on Melbourne

Grove, and will analyse the potential benefits of a number of tactics, including traffic humps, and ‘pinchpoints.’

They also noted in their initial deputation that they hoped the study would analyse the effect any changes would have on neighbouring roads, as they had ‘no desire to simply push the problem elsewhere.’

Councillor James Barber, who sits on the Dulwich Community Council, also highlighted the fact that many, if not the majority, of the signatories on the new petition were not in fact residents of Melbourne Grove, unlike the initial pro-study group. He said: “I think both groups essentially want to same thing, which is safer roads in Dulwich.”

Macmillan fundraiser ‘my way of giving back’ BERMONDSEY: A cancer survivor will host a special fundraiser in Bermondsey next week as part of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which will see events take place across the country.

The charity morning will take place at Wade Hall on the Dickens Estate on September 25, with a whole host of treats on offer for generous visitors.

Sheila Woolgar, who had breast cancer but was given the all-clear two years ago, told the News that she was organising the event to “give back.”

She said: “I was one of the lucky ones. It’s my way to give back to the charity.

“If I was twenty or thirty years younger I would volunteer and do all sorts, but I can’t.

“I also had two friends pass away from cancer this year, so I’ll be doing this in memory of Cathy Norton and Johnny Webb. It’s awful, there aren’t many families out there who haven’t been affected by cancer.”

The fundraiser, which will involve raffles, a jumble sale, goodies and refreshments, will begin at 11am and finish at 2pm.

THE BOROUGH’S political heavyweights have called on insurance companies and Thames Water to finally “make good” their debt to victims of the 2013 Herne Hill flood.

Many traders are still engaged in frustrating insurance and compensation negotiations, over two years after a broken Thames Water pipe sent a devastating waist-high wave of water across the Half Moon Lane area.

With no relief in sight, Southwark Council Leader Peter John and MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes are both now demanding an improvement to the “completely unacceptable” response.

Many traders, such as Ken Gangadeen of Half Moon Food and Wine and Tamara MacFarlane of Tales On Moon Lane, were forced to spend thousands of pounds of their own money following the August 7 flood.

Ken said: “I spent £15,000 myself, which was only partially covered by Thames Water. In the end, we were forced to cut ties with Londis because we

weren’t selling enough after the flood.

“This meant we lost discounts and credit. We gained a bit of freedom by becoming independent but we had to raise prices and so lost customers. The insurers and Thames fought over every technical issue, like not paying back VAT on damaged stock.”

Tamara had only just finished repaying a loan that she had incurred following a previous flood when her children’s bookshop was destroyed once again.

She said: “Dealing with insurance has been worse than the flood. It’s been absolute hell. We lost every bit of paperwork and accounts. The records that we do have are with our accountant, who we have to pay every time we need to access them. At the moment we can’t afford to pay our account, so everything is sort of on hold.”

The owner of the first business to reopen following the flood, Just Williams toy shop, also bemoaned the glacial speed of insurance negotiations.

Vicky Brown said: “It wasn’t so much Thames Water that was the problem but the insurance. I spent a long time on the case and absolutely bust a gut to get us back open. Because we have other branches we could just about survive, but it was very hard and a lot of cuts had to be made. At one point we didn’t even

have any plastic bags to hand out to customers.”

Cllr John pointed the finger of blame at Thames Water and demanded a solution.

He said: “It’s incredibly disappointing to say ‘well, we’ve fixed the pipes, now it’s okay.’ It takes these traders years and years to become successful, and years and years for Herne Hill to develop as a shopping district. Now it’s been set back.

“I look to Thames Water to make good.

You caused this, now it’s up to you to use your influence to influence the insurance companies who are not paying, or to pay it yourself. They have been making the right noises – but they can’t walk away now.”

Ms Hayes also slammed the “completely unacceptable” response.

She said: “There has been far too much delay on the part of insurance companies in settling claims, and Thames Water has also been much too slow to respond to offer appropriate levels of compensation.

The Herne Hill flood should not have happened - a water main of the size and age of the one running through Herne Hill should have been subject to much more careful monitoring and earlier replacement to avoid this disaster.

“I am calling on Thames Water to act swiftly to provide additional

compensation, before we see any more much-loved local businesses close.”

The memories of the devastating flood will live long in the memories of local traders, who see reminders all around them. For Ken, it is the water stains on the walls of his basement or the cat he adopted in order to chase out the rats that poured into the shop. For Tamara it is the weather – “every time it rains, my heart stops.”

For most, however, it is the constant wrangling with insurance companies or Thames Water that means, even two years on, the memories of the flood are as fresh as ever.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We’re really sorry to hear businesses are still recovering and we’re meeting with them to ensure all outstanding claims are resolved. To date we’ve paid over £3.6 million in compensation through individual claims and tried to ensure all insurance claims made with us directly are settled as quickly as possible.

“We also donated £100,000 to match LB Southwark’s community fund in 2013 to support the business community.

Many businesses opted to claim through their own insurers, but we are happy to review all cases.”

I

t’s raining catwalks and designer dogs in SE1 as crafty creative hub Bermondsey Street hangs the bunting for the annual Bermondsey Street Festival.

This year’s event will see artisan food specialists lining the street with stalls, craft beer and cocktails flowing freely, and designers showcasing their wares on the popular catwalk.

Of course the other main catwalk is the iconic dog show, run by Holly and Lil’s Elaine, which has been a staple of the festival since its inception.

The festival started out in 2007 when Michael Davies of Bermondsey Street Area Partnership got together with the businesses and members of the community to produce a festival in a mere three weeks.

The council and local businesses chipped in and it was held in Tanner Street Park with Maypole, a ceilidh, dog show, music from bands off the back of a truck, a musical presentation by quay players and about 30 stalls. Local artist Andrew Logan cut the ribbon and declared the festival open.

In 2008 designer Zandra Rhodes, who founded Bermondsey Street’s Fashion and Textile Museum, became the festival’s patron, extending the geographic reach to

the southern part of Bermondsey Street from Tanner Street Park to Long lane.

Now in its eighth year, the festival continues to evolve alongside its ever changing residents, but remains strongly rooted in community.

The Bermondsey Street festival costs over £35,000 to put on and would not run without the support of sponsors, volunteers and performers.

Festival organiser Angela said: “Simplicity stepped in to sponsor us, ensuring that the festival ran this year and we are so happy we are working with such a great restaurant and dynamic man without him the festival may not have gone ahead."

Unlike other festival food stalls, Simplicity are providing Champagne & seafood, with homemade ice-cream, and a specially designed picnic area with blankets in the Leathermarket Rose garden.

THE SAVIOUR of the Bermondsey Street Festival wants to create a new foodie quarter around his popular restaurant in Rotherhithe.

Lawrence Lingard, of Simplicity in Tunnel Road, stepped in to save the annual celebration when organisers experienced a funding shortfall.

He said that he was desperate to see the popular community event go ahead – and equally determined to help grow his own restaurant, as well as Rotherhithe’s blossoming cuisine scene.

He said: “Places like Bermondsey Street and Maltby Street are really

exciting and something I would love to see develop in Rotherhithe.

Restaurants give people a reason to visit an area, to see what else is around and go for a wander.”

The adventurous chef, who took part in an around-the-world yacht race last year, saw the festival as a great way to highlight his own restaurant, which he has been working to improve since returning to solid land.

He said: “I wanted to use the festival as a chance to show off Simplicity to the wider south London community - and where better than in Bermondsey? We will be hosting

“We’re a local community restaurant. The last year has been a difficult challenge to get the restaurant back to where it was before I left, but we’ve done that now and want to push on to the next stage.”

The restaurant serves meals using local, fresh ingredients and aims to give British food “its rightful place at the table.”

Lawrence was also involved with another community cooking venture last week, when he attended the

launch of the Bermondsey Community Kitchen youth project.

He said: “To be invited to the event with Raymond Blanc was really nice. He is one of the best chefs in the world and it was great to see him involved in such a positive project.

“I have been invited back to help teach some of the trainees, which is a real honour. In the past I was involved in colleges and schools, so it’s great that this new venture have asked me to help.”

First up, though, is the Bermondsey festival.

Lawrence said: “Saturday is going to be a great day. The weather looks

good and there is so much planned.

They call it ‘the village fete in the city’ and that sums it up – it’s a great community event.”

ARLIAMENT HAS been back a fortnight and is as hectic as ever.

The first Commons debate on Assisted Suicide in two decades was held last week. I voted against assisted dying after running a local survey, meeting with people across the constituency with different experiences and hearing from community leaders. There was broad consensus in the Commons, in a discussion which had no party whip, that palliative care needs improving and that more support must be made available to people seeking to end lives prematurely. The result was overwhelmingly against changing the current law which won’t please everyone. But I hope Tories who spoke in the debate acknowledge that their Government is pursuing further cuts and may yet contribute to more suicides. If they acknowledge the impact when there is a free vote and genuinely want a reduction in suicides then rethinking certain policies and improving mental healthcare would be a useful start.

I began my role on the Bill Committee examining the Government’s welfare plans.

I’ve tabled amendments to try and improve apprenticeships and to exempt disabled people and carers from some reductions in help. If the Government refuses to listen in committee, I hope the House of Lords (where there is no Tory majority) will support my proposals.

I was pleased to be able to host a meeting for young people in Parliament, including a large number from Notre Dame [pictured].

Ending violence against women, tackling online abuse, and improving internet safety were all topics nominated by young attendees. They were able to present concerns to policy makers including the Secretary of States’ private secretary. If the Government accepted their views, young people would be safer. The impressive Southwark attendees can be proud of their contribution and know their ideas would work; the future is truly safer in their hands.

Back in the constituency it was great to see Raymond Blanc help open the Bermondsey Community Kitchen. Michael and Russell deserve huge plaudits for pulling the project together to help local young people get training and opportunities in the catering sector. One lad told me he’d got used to being told ‘no’ by other organisations and was surprised and grateful for his chance in the Kitchen. Our area is famous for contributing to London’s thriving food industry – including Borough Market’s 1,000 year history here. With the sector continuing to grow, the Kitchen will ensure young people get more opportunities – and it is fantastic to have Raymond Blanc willing to even coach some himself!

I’d also like to take this chance to wish the home nations well in the rugby World Cup. I will be cheering the England team on in Friday’s opening game against Fiji.

We can’t put people at risk in care homes FOLLOWING CLLR Linforth Hall’s comments in last week’s paper I wanted to set out clearly the council’s position on care homes in Southwark (‘Care Home Crisis’ as third put under council embargo, Southwark News, September 10, 2015).

We expect care providers operating in the borough to provide our residents with the highest quality care and support and we take any cases of poor care very seriously.

All Southwark care homes are privately run and monitored by the Care Quality Commission.

The council pays for care for our residents in privately owned care homes, and if they do not meet care standards our safeguarding policies would prevent us from placing residents in these homes.

The safety and wellbeing of our residents is our overriding concern, which is why we do not place residents in care homes in the borough which are failing to meet

approved standards.

Frankly I’m surprised that Cllr Linforth Hall would advocate putting residents at risk in this way.

An encouragement to talented minorities

SADIQ KHAN’S triumph in the Labour mayoral selection is a cause for quiet celebration among those of us who have fought for talented minorities to reach the highest levels in UK politics.

To me it represents the change that is now clearly inevitable: the best people, from whatever backgrounds, cannot be held back from attaining the top positions forever.

In a city that is 40% made up of people not born in the UK, this means in time 40% of the top jobs in politics will be held by talented minorities.

Southwark as a borough however, still languishes behind the curve. Four of Southwark’s council cabinet positions are occupied by yes-men whose credentials are totally inadequate for the responsibilities entrusted to them. Southwark is being let down every day as a result. Do Southwark’s residents not deserve better than this?

The time is right for Southwark to embrace change. We would be willing and indeed proud to work with any party to make it happen.

Southwark deserves a more representative and talented political leadership at the top. It needs to happen. It will happen. Let’s start now.

Our love affair with sugar can mean that many of us are having too many calories, which is one of the causes behind our ever-expanding waistlines. One in four adults and almost one in ten children aged four to five are obese. Being overweight or obese is a danger to our health. It increases the risk of life-threatening diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Sugar is also the main cause of tooth decay, which affects one in three five year olds.

Not all sugars are bad. It’s the food and drink high in added sugar that we should be cutting down on, such as – sweetened fizzy drinks, sugary cereals, confectionery, fruit juice, and sugar added at the table.

So, exactly how much sugar is too much? The most up-to-date guidance is that no more than 5% of daily calories should come from added sugar. For children aged 11 or over and adults that’s no more than 30g, or seven teaspoons, of added sugar a day – less than a single can of Coca-Cola, which contains around nine teaspoons. Children aged seven to 10 should have no more than 24g, or six teaspoons, a day (around the amount in a Snickers bar). Children aged four to six should have no more than 19g, or five teaspoons, a day (around the amount in a pouch of Capri Sun drink).

Cutting down doesn’t have to mean going cold turkey. There are lots of small changes you can make to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. Try gradually reducing the amount of sugar you take in tea or coffee, switch to lower sugar cereals like plain porridge and check food labels carefully for sugar content. Fizzy drinks, squashes and cordials contain nearly a quarter of the added sugar in our diets so try sugar-free varieties or better yet – have water.

Reining in our sugar intake is by no means easy but starting now gives us a better chance of living longer, healthier lives.

First staged in 2003, Simon Stephens sideways look at what it means to live in a big urban centre, and how the anonymous nature of city living can leave us feeling alienated.

The Vaults at Waterloo can feel quite claustrophobic, doubly so when it’s a tad warm. This atmosphere amongst full house helped add to the sense of individuality being crushed by the City that lies on top of the theatre. One minute charts how the ripples that move through a city after a tragedy impact those it touches. From the Inspector leading the enquiry to the Mother of the victim the play plots fallout of a tragedy over the long-term. One of the key questions raised by the piece is to what extent are we Londoners a community?

It’s a difficult question to answer. But one worth asking. Is it only through tragedy that we form our shared sense of identity? Is this an illusion to disguise the fact that we are all strangers with similar postcodes? For those not seeking a light entertainment One minute is worth checking out, as long as you are prepared to confront some uncomfortable feelings. I left the theatre and couldn’t state that what I had gone through was enjoyable, but I did feel that it was worthwhile. I may even give my neighbour a knock, just to see how he is.

FRANK SINATRA first performed at the London Palladium in 1950 and I am sure he would have approved of last night’s performance because, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, it was as if he was right back there live on that famous stage 65 years on, writes Kathleen Moss...

Of course, all his true fans know his life story already, but it was nice to hear his voice again describing the different aspects of his life's journey: from his first marriage to Nancy and watching old cine film of his three children, then through to his first Big Band recordings between 1939 -1942 with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey.

time. Later on in his career he recorded with such greats as Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington and many more, all of whom could be heard here as the orchestra brought them all to life on the stage of the London Palladium.

Of course there was also a mention of his Oscar winning performance in ‘From Here to Eternity’, and a tongue in cheek denial of any undue pressure from anyone regarding how he got the part. And we all believed him!

When the picture came up on screen of Ava Gardner he sang ‘I've got you under my skin’ and ‘I got it bad and that ain’t good’. Those two songs seemed to describe all the agony he would have gone through, because falling in love with Ava meant the end of his marriage to Nancy.

screen. They made you feel that Sinatra was here in the theatre, and that’s what made it such a great night.

And I must not forget the dancers.

Each and every one of them was exceptional. The clothes and dance steps changed along with the songs and the era the music came from.

We had a wonderful surprise at the end of the show when daughter Nancy came on stage to thank the production team for putting the show together. She made a very emotional thank you speech. She also introduced us to Frank’s granddaughter who used to visit the U.K. with her grandfather.

Go see the show even if you are not a fan, because I guarantee you will be one before the night is through.

HOW WAR HIT OUR HOSPITALS

EXACTLY 75 years ago, Nazi bombs began raining down indiscriminately on London, flattening houses, factories - and even hospitals, writes Joey Millar...

But while Guy’s and St Thomas’ suffered just as much devastation and tragedy as the city’s industrial and residential areas during the Blitz, one 92-year-old former nurse remembers the chaos with “almost warm memories.”

Rosemary Hitchcock signed up when she was just sixteen to work at St Thomas’ after her brother was tragically killed in action in 1940. Staff braved “terrible conditions” to keep both hospitals open, working in special underground wards.

But despite these gloomy surroundings and sobering circumstances, the Devon-born pensioner speaks fondly of the comradery and comedy that prevailed through the famous Blitz spirit.

The pensioner recalls one occasion when she was caught on the surface during a raid with slap-stick reminiscence.

She said: “I remember being stuck above ground level, holding a jar of thermometers. If we broke a thermometer, we had to pay for it, so I was being very careful.

“Then I heard a Doodlebug starting to doodle above me – when the noise stopped, you knew the bomb was about to come down. When the Doodlebug hit the other end of the hospital, two policemen in pyjamas helped me to protect my thermometers and made sure they didn’t crash to the ground.”

The close bond between the nurses

and police was a constant during the war – with the older brother-style protective nature of local cabbies also appreciated.

She said: “In my time off, I used to go off into London with my friend. Nurses in uniform were treated specially by the taxi drivers. The American servicemen tried to get into our taxis but the drivers were brilliant and refused to let them.”

“Any police who needed hospital treatment were brought to us at St Thomas’. The police and the nurses were a great mix. If anything went wrong, or we needed help, oh boy, they were right there!”

Rosemary continued her life of action after the war, working for the Red Cross and helping Hungarian refugees cross by train to Austria and Germany.

He daughter Rosamund, 57, described her as “an inspiration.”

She said: “She lived all over the place, in Dusseldorf, Vienna, Belgrade and Paris. She spoke so many languages and drove herself across the continent –

in fact she only gave up driving two months ago!

“I’m constantly amazed by her memories, which even of the Blitz are always positive. The way she talks about ‘doodlebuds doodling’ – it sounds so warm, but it was a bloody great bomb!

“But that’s just how she was. Even today she has a very naughty sense of humour. She is constantly saying ‘I’m a nurse, I’ve seen much worse!’ She’s very naughty.”

While both hospitals were heavily bombed from September 8 1940 onwards, thanks to the ingenuity and dedication of staff, no patients were killed during the war. Ten hospital staff and two firefighters, however, did fall victim to the Luftwaffe’s raids.

At a special memorial service held last week, Sir Hugh Taylor, Chairman of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The Blitz was a significant period in the history of Guy’s and St Thomas’, and the history of London. Staff at the hospitals did their best for their patients in terrible conditions, sometimes even sterilising their equipment on Primus stoves so that they could work in the converted basement wards when the hot water wasn’t running.

“The first bombs hit the hospitals on 8 and 9 September 1940. Now, 75 years on, we remember the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who died at St Thomas’ during the Blitz.”

The lives of those lost will always be remembered but, thanks to people like Rosemary, so too will the enduring humour, spirit and comradery of London’s Blitz spirit.

‘INTIMATE’ IS a popular buzzword in the restaurant industry but, even by the bohemian standards of Bermondsey Street, there is surely not a more snug eating experience in the borough than Waffle On, writes Joey Millar...

The pop-up eatery is located in the old and almost claustrophobicallysmall Watch House, in which guards used to protect the adjacent churchyard from 19th-century grave-robbers.

Two hundred years later, however, the only steal is the price. A café by day, from 5pm the tiny one-room building is taken over by chefs specialising in everything waffle, with a number of sweet and savoury creations starting from £5.

The first challenge is choosing your waffle (or two – one just won’t cut it unless you’re on the ‘No Carbs Before Marbs’ diet, in which case you probably shouldn’t be in a waffle restaurant) from the enticing selection.

On the savoury side of things, Southern-style chicken, slowroasted duck and goat’s cheese waffles are all on offer. I plumped for the duck which was thinly shredded and doused in plum sauce – probably not how that particular bird saw its time on earth ending but tasty nonetheless.

For seconds, which also doubled as a dessert, I had the seasonal fruit waffle. It was piled high in enough berries and figs to knock out Saint Dorothy (the patron saint of fruit trees – but you knew that already) and drizzled with enough chocolate

day café and late night bar serving local food, proper coffee and great wines.

The first noticeable change is how much lighter the space is.

Scandinavian-style pale wooden furniture, benches and rectangular communal tables, exposed light bulbs dangling and a general air of Danish minimalism has given the formerly dark wine bar a modern lift.

Erskine, however, so get it while it’s still available. £1 from each sale is being donated to Action Against Hunger.

As eating experiences go Waffle On is certainly unique. The building is quirky - although not necessarily

in a good way, with a cramped rather than cosy feel. It works great as a café but as a venue for a sitdown meal it just doesn’t seem right.

The fun creations more than make up for this, however. What a load of waffle!

Penny (the name comes from a series of talks called the Penny Lectures hosted in the halls of the Old Vic in 1882) serves “creatively driven food and drink from local products and likeminded producers”.

It’s very elegant, an ensemble of big white plates with clusters of beautifully sculpted beetroot and leaves drizzled in honey – and not just regular Tesco honey but the honey of a locally placed, environmentally conscious thespian bee, whose ancestry is loosely linked to Laurence Olivier. I jest, the food isn’t pretentious, it’s actually very simple but very beautifully presented.

My dining companion and I enjoyed a platter of cheeses from the British Isles: Stichelton (£3.70), Wellesley (£2), Bartlett (£2.90), and Tunworth (£2.60) -an ideal pre or post theatre snack- and two fresh and innovative salads.

The rustic heritage tomato, curd, burnt onion and bread (£7.90) salad featured artfully torn bread pieces (like what you’d feed to ducks but more chic obviously) drizzled with the aforementioned artisan honey. It was excellent, though the roast beetroot, cherries, radicchio, and hazelnut salad (£7.90) was also surprisingly tasty. I’m always suspicious of beetroot; I don’t know why.

Speciality coffee (£2) courtesy of Workshop Coffee in Clerkenwell is, as advertised, proper coffee. The tea and coffee is prepared with all the loving care of a Geisha tea-dance: we’re brought tiny tea trays with stainless steel individual tea pots and clear glass teacups. The steamed milk is presented in miniature milk pint glasses. Service is so elegant; the refinement of the theatre world never fails to envelope

The all-day menu flows from breakfast into lunch and then a relaxed evening service and though it’s designed to complement a night at the theatre, it’s a delightful underground hideaway worth remembering if you’re in Waterloo and looking for a pit stop (but not a Pit Bar). A penny saved is a penny earned in this case too; the theatre is donating a penny for each item sold at Penny to a charity inspired by the themes of the show on the main stage at the time. It looks like they’re in for a Penny, in for a pound.

FISHER GOT their first away win in the league this season after a comfortable 4-1 win at local rivals Holmesdale last Saturday.

The away side took the lead 15 minutes in through Quinten Conteh and doubled their advantage six minutes later when Tyrell McLeod-Bentley finished smartly.

After the break Fisher added a third through Max Rothwell.

Travis Gregory rounded off his side’s scoring 22 minutes from time before Dereece Thompson grabbed a consolation for Holmesdale.

Two days later Crowborough were the visitors to Champion Hill and the away side shocked their hosts by going two goals up inside ten minutes.

Tyrone Guthrie, however, pulled a goal back four minutes later before Conteh, remarkably, made it 2-2 in the 18th minute.

That was the way it stayed until the final whistle with the only cloud for Fisher a late injury to McLeod-Bentley.

Southwark aquatics enter the Kent Junior League

THE SOUTH London squad based at Seven Islands Leisure Centre secured an impressive fifth place in the second round of the Kent Junior League.

The team, aged thirteen and under, were by far the smallest and most multi-cultural in the competition.

Many of the children knocked seconds of their personal bests, a result of re-appointed head coach Tony Evans’ intense regime with most children training five or six nights a week.

The club will be chasing more positive results at this Saturday’s gala at the Olympic Park aquatics centre in Stratford.

Millwall’s assistant manager takes a studious approach to coaching career

AIDEN O’BRIEN said last week that he was a “born striker” and that if the chances came he would take them, but even he could not have imagined how soon he would deliver on those words – and how spectacularly.

He was the difference between the sides, offering Millwall the clinical edge that Crewe struggled to find.

O’Brien said his favourite strike was his third, when he picked up the ball 25 yards out before bamboozling three or four Crewe defenders with some stunning footwork to move into the box and plant a left-footed effort past Ben Garratt.

His manager Neil Harris picked out his opening goal, when he twisted his body to turn the ball into the net after Carlos Edwards had initiated a move in the inside-right channel and fizzed a ball across the six-yard boss.

In between, in the 64th minute, O’Brien opportunistically latched onto Ed Upson’s pass with his back to goal 25 yards out to quickly turn and fire a right-footed drive past Garratt, who was perhaps taken by surprise with little danger apparent.

Harris said afterwards he wondered if Millwall were going to be out of luck when Crewe equalised in the 36th minute, the ball taking a couple of deflections before finally flicking off striker Lauri Dalla Valle to leave Jordan Archer wrong-footed as it rolled into the net.

The Lions needed Sid Nelson to fling himself at Chris Atkinson’s shot when he surged into the box and looked like he was about to score in the first half, while Archer made three significant blocks in the second, the pick of them a rapid double save to keep out first Harry Davis and then Dalla Valle.

But after O’Brien’s second Millwall always looked comfortable before he sealed his first ever senior hat-trick to hand his side three vital points.

THERE IS something of a scholarly edge underpinning some of the preparations of the Millwall squad this season.

Dave Livermore visited the country most associated with player development when he observed the methods of Dutch clubs AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord during the summer and believes English clubs can learn from the way they approach not alone

development but tactical preparation and physical conditioning.

Millwall’s assistant manager is a fan of Dutch coach Raymond Verheijen, the fitness guru and the man who branded David Moyes a “dinosaur” for the training methods he believed had contributed to Robin van Persie’s injury problems at Manchester United.

And Livermore says he is constantly reaching out for new knowledge that can improve his own performance.

He explained: “There are always little bits and pieces that you pick up as a coach.

“I’m always interested in adding what I can. A big favourite of mine is Raymond Verheijen, I read a lot of his stuff. He’s very outspoken, very critical of football clubs. I’ve kind of followed his methodology for about three seasons in the academy so I always look to take the good bits from people like that.

“It was basically through the academy, it was an opportunity with a tour that came up. It’s something I like to do at the end of the season if I have the opportunity to see a different football

culture.

“Obviously Holland has a great tradition in developing young players, and I was more in youth development at that stage. So I went to see AZ Alkmaar and spent a day with them and then a day with Feyenoord who had nine players at the last World Cup, which was the most of any football club worldwide. I was very fortunate to able to go and observe their methods.

“One of the things it did was to reinforce the positive things that we do here. There are a lot of similarities.

“The two clubs are very different. AZ were a bit more forward-thinking, a bit more open with their approach.

Feyenoord were a bit more traditional in their set-up, but I can’t argue with what they’ve done: they won academy football club of the year five years on the spin before AZ took it off them.”

Livermore also outlined one of the areas where he feels English clubs can benefit from the knowledge and expertise of their Dutch counterparts.

“In Holland what they do better is periodisation,” he said. “That’s probably

something that we could do better.

“Periodisation is: When do we train?

When, how intense, at what points?

How do we work the tactical element into a training session? They have very much an integrated approach where everything – whether it’s possession, a small-sided game – is always doing it from the shape of your team, from the principles of your play. It’s also about when, how and why you do your football conditioning as well.”

Livermore stressed that bringing players such as Sid Nelson, Fred Onyedinma and Ben Thompson, who have all been prominent at times in the first team this season, through the academy is key to the club’s long-term strategy in a more constricted financial climate in League One. “That’s the direction the club wants to go in,” he said. “We want to promote youth and the development of our players. We can’t spend a lot of money on transfers. So for us (as coaches) that’s great, but ultimately it’s about putting a team out there that is competitive and can win football matches.”

LIONS HOPE TO PHIL THEIR BOOTS

MILLWALL WILL be looking to end their second intense period already this season with their first home win in the league at The Den against struggling Southend.

The Lions played five games in seventeen days before the international break and Saturday’s clash will be their third this week.

Millwall’s last victory at home in the league was against Wigan on April 14 last season, when goals from Jimmy Abdou and Magaye Gueye gave them some hope of avoiding the drop to the third tier.

Southend, meanwhile, were rocked by a 1-0 home defeat against Shrewsbury last week, with their former Ireland international striker Noel Hunt calling the result

“baffling”.

They have a boss though in Phil Brown, who has experience managing in the Premier League with Hull City and who led them to promotion from League Two last season.

Southend are unbeaten on the road in the league this campaign, having drawn their three games at Fleetwood, Doncaster and - most impressively - Coventry.

Millwall boss Neil Harris and assistant Dave Livermore took the opportunity to go to the Ricoh Arena to see that 2-2 draw first hand.

Livermore said: “It definitely helps when you have a longer build-up. We were able to watch Shrewsbury a lot before the start of the season. It always helps to see a team three or four times live.

“We’ve seen Southend live. It

was fortunate that the international break allowed us to do that, and with the way the games have fallen Southend played Coventry on a Monday night so were able to see that one.

“We watch two to three games of every opposition before we play them, whether that’s on video or live, and obviously we have Steve Jones who does the opposition analysis and will go watch games and report back to us.”

Livermore has been impressed by a number of technically accomplished League One sides and believes that the higher standard than expected is partly due to the trickle-down effect of more technical footballers to the lower divisions.

“We were under no illusions before the start of the season,” he said. “We always thought we’d

understand a bit more after ten games of the season.

“I’ve been a bit surprised in that there have been some really good teams who play some good football. Speaking to other coaches and managers, they’re all saying there’s more football played in League One than in the Championship.

“Whether it’s a coincidence, maybe we’ve played against all the good footballing teams.

“Maybe that’s how the game’s evolving. Maybe a lot more of the smaller, technical players are filtering down a bit more to League One and League Two now to gain more of that physicality before they step up into the Championship. There are some good players that you can see in maybe a season or two will be Championship players.”

AMID ALL the talk of Millwall’s poor league form at home, Carlos Edwards offers perhaps the most vivid description of what has been happening this season.

“We as players and the club need to make it as easy as possible for the fans,” he says. “Yes they do have their little moan but they are entitled to do that, but we can’t blame them when they know at The Den it’s supposed to be the Lions, no one else.

“At the moment we’re getting hyenas coming to The Den and taking our meals away. That shouldn’t be the case but we’re just going to keep working as hard as possible.”

Edwards himself is a vivid character. At one point before the interview at Calmont Road he slides towards the main office wearing his football boots dug into a pair of trainers.

“Anything to avoid a fine, eh Carlos?” his manager says, laughing.

You hear him before you see him and it’s not hard to see why Neil

Harris said his leadership qualities were missed as Millwall battled relegation from the Championship last season. You’d probably want to be anchored to the ground not to feel a lift with him around.

Not that the other players venerate a player who is closer to 40 years old than 30.

“They call me The Fossil” he says.

“That was Mark Beevers. I told him I think that nickname is going viral so he needs to get a finder’s fee. I think the gaffer is even getting involved!

“It’s only certain people that are entitled to call me that. But it’s all good, it’s all to do with the togetherness.”

His breezy and relaxed nature, though, disguise a fiercely driven competitor. He has come back from serious injury before but there are few players who have suffered such significant knee damage that required almost a year’s rehabilitation who have come back and look like a fresh 22-year-old. His return also coincided with an

‘The Fossil’ says kids keep him young as he nears his 37th birthday immediate upturn in Millwall’s form, but he refuses to take much individual credit and emphasises the importance of players taking as much responsibility as management when things get rough.

He said: “You can tap yourself on the back but, at the end of the day, it’s a team effort. Maybe I can come in and make a difference, that little one percent or that extra experience or belief or calmness that the manager says I have.

“The gaffer said from day one he wants that and that’s what we need.

We’re a pride, as I said. We’re the Lions, I play for the Lions, so we have to look after each other.

“And we’re getting there. Slowly but surely with the experience and youth. And hopefully with the management team, they will get it right themselves.

“Maybe they might put their hands up in certain games and say they didn’t get the tactics right and I think the manager is fair enough to do that.

“I also think players should do the same when they know for a fact they

had a bad game or made bad decisions. As professional players we don’t need anyone to come and say, ‘You put your shoe on wrong’, we know that already.

“But it’s to echo it and get it into your head a bit and try to move forward and improve as you go along.”

Edwards turns 37 next month but says that physically he doesn’t feel a whole lot different to what he did earlier in his career, except for needing an extra half day or day to recover after games. He puts that partly down to a natural affinity for football and to his home life with his wife and three daughters – an eightyear-old and twins, aged three.

He explains: “I think it’s just a love of the game for me that I’m going this far. Maybe my kids are keeping me young and fresh, they keep me on my toes every day.

“I also can’t put on fat to save my life, even if I try. My metabolism… I think that’s one of the reasons they call me The Fossil.

“From the time I was 22 to now, not

much has changed. It’s not that I can eat anything I want to, my missus does love to cook and she loves for me to eat. A few times I would have a big meal.

“If I have a big breakfast at the training ground I go home and in an hour or two I’m hungry again and I’m like, ‘I’ve just had a big meal’.

I’m not just going to start eating everything, I have to make sure the best things go into my system and I have to work with it.”

He is contracted to Millwall until January and while he says he doesn’t feel any pressure to perform to win a longer deal, he knows that’s what he is working for.

“It’s not the first thing on my mind, but it is on my mind,” he admits.

“But it’s not to say that I go out on the pitch to prove something.

“The manager knows what I’m about, as do the fans. But at the same time I do have to try to do my best to get that contract extension. Saying that, I just go out there and put my head down, work and do what the manager wants me to do.”

THIS WAS a match that could have been over inside the first fifteen minutes but ended up in the balance right up until the 93rd, before Lee Gregory placed his spot-kick into the right corner of Jak Alnwick’s goal and atoned for his miss against Coventry in the first home league game of the season.

Gregory seemed in another parish when he persevered deep in Port Vale’s penalty area in injury time to bring the ball around Alnwick and tumble when he felt the keeper’s arm brush off his leg.

The rest of the Millwall side had taken a watching brief after a breathless last fifteen minutes that saw Port Vale push for an equaliser and very nearly get it, when striker Uche Ikpeazu swept Ben Purkiss’ cross towards goal but up and over Jordan Archer’s crossbar.

Mark Beevers, who was a colossus for Millwall all night alongside the equally impressive Byron Webster, in for Sid Nelson after he failed to recover in time from bruised ribs he suffered against Crewe, had given the Lions the lead in the 57th minute when he rose at the back post to power Shaun Williams’ corner past Alnwick.

It has been a feature of Millwall’s season that key players have emerged to assume responsibility at

different times and Beevers has been growing into a similar role since regaining his place in the side, after losing it before the 3-2 defeat to Barnsley in August.

Webster was equally defiant and neither player took a step back in their confrontation with Ikpeazu.

That Millwall had to defend so resolutely in the last period of the game was down to the steel of Alnwick and his defence in a frenetic opening period.

Aiden O’Brien looked like he was only going to need three minutes to pick up where he had left off at Gresty Road on Saturday when he fired left-footed at what appeared for a split-second to be an open goal only for former Millwall defender Richard Duffy to somehow reach the ball with his head and divert it away for a corner.

O’Brien, so lively and always involved, went close again in the ninth minute with a right-footed effort that was saved before three chances arrived in quick succession - after which it seemed miraculous the scores were still level.

over the bar, before the keeper got down low to superbly keep out Steve Morison’s header.

Upson then saw another effort scraped off the line as the feeling grew Millwall would pay later for the missed chances.

They almost did on the stroke of half-time when Ikpeazu brushed off Beevers to cross for Enoch Andoh, whose header was magnificently tipped over by Archer, who seems to produce at least one spectacular save a game now.

That would have been harsh on the away side, but Beevers stepped up to make sure there would be no regrets when he superbly dispossessed Byron Moore on the edge of the box - before Millwall swept up the pitch to win a corner.

Williams, who was also outstanding, swung the ball in and Beevers gave Alnwick no chance with the finish.

Port Vale valiantly pinned the Lions back and Ikpeazu should have equalised, but Gregory had the last word to send 210 Millwall fans home happy and set his side up perfectly for the visit of Southend on Saturday.

MILLWALL CAPTAIN Tony Craig feels boss Neil Harris is finally putting his indelible mark on the team.

The Lions won the second of two away games in four days with a 2-0 victory against Port Vale - who had previously been unbeaten at home on Tuesday night.

Millwall came in for some criticism in August after four defeats in four home games, but they have turned their form completely around and have now lost just one of their last

five, keeping three clean sheets.

Craig now believes Harris’ philosophy is becoming much clearer after three successive wins going into Saturday’s clash with Southend at The Den. “I'll give him his due, what I've seen so far it's been good,” Craig explained. “Week by week and game by game he's putting his stamp and authority on his team.

“I think tonight is the first time we've really seen that come through.

“He has the respect straight away.

He had a great career as a professional footballer and now it's his chance to manage.”

NEIL HARRIS says Millwall are now looking like a “proper” team after climbing into the top half of the Sky Bet League One table with victory over Port Vale this week.

Harris witnessed a display of vigour from his side as the Lions should have been well clear by half-time at Vale Park.

Millwall came under more pressure from the home side in the second period but had the energy to defend stoutly after Mark Beevers’ opener and clinch the three points in injury time through Lee Gregory.

“That’s down to the boys,” Harris said.

“It’s the preparation and us leaving no stone unturned to make sure we maximise every bit of recovery and preparation we can.

“The boys are confident and that started with the home win over Peterborough – that was a big step for us.

“That gave the boys the confidence to go to Crewe and realise that at times we don’t have to have the football to be the best team on the pitch.

“On Saturday and tonight we dominated the first half possession-wise because we had the energy and the movement, we wanted to get on the ball.

“We have a strict gameplan in and out of possession but they also have to have freedom to make their own decisions.

They are men and they are good players.

“We’re going to get some wrong, we’re going to give the ball away at times but then that’s where it becomes important that we defend as a unit and people like Jimmy Abdou have the recovery powers to use pace and energy to get back and win us the ball back and we start again.

“At the moment we’re looking like a proper team.”
