Domestic abuse has to be taken seriously

S

IMPLY PUT, if you’re a victim of domestic abuse you’re not even safe in your own home which means you can never escape the torment.

So the importance of local authorities being able to offer safe refuge to people in this terrible situation cannot be overstated.

There’s a large group of needy people on the list for priority housing, but what the campaign by feminist group Sisters Uncut has done is refocus the attention of council bosses, so that domestic abuse victims who appeal for help are taken seriously.

Information and training for housing officers will be provided - clearly much needed, given that the group says 47 per cent of male and female domestic abuse victims were turned away when seeking refuge. And the council will also see if there are any ‘proactive changes’ it can make to its housing allocations policy.

The campaign group accuses the council of ‘stripping vulnerable people of their dignity’ - we would argue that the council has no intention of doing this, but is right to listen to Sisters Uncut and try to improve the situation. It’s about resources, and the effective use of them, and also about educating council staff and enabling them to recognise the signs of domestic abuse, and knowing how to help them.

Aside from training, the key issue is housing, and the group’s finding that 1,270 council homes were vacant at one point in 2016 is truly eyewatering. If this statistic is correct, along with Southwark having half the number of temporary accommodation beds than nearby Bromley - just 24 - then clearly something in the system has gone badly wrong.

Business rate hike

USINESSES IN the borough will be viewing next April with dread - as the government brings in a dramatic hike in business rates.

Previous rates were set in 2008, with the updated figures taken from property prices in April 2015. So in areas such as Borough and Bermondsey, Peckham and East Dulwich, property prices have soared beyond belief. Many businesses will have seen increased footfall from this, and large firms will have moved to the area. Yet it’s also true that many businesses, and certainly ones that were in an area before it took off, will not have seen a rise in business commensurate with the increase in rent and now rates.

Whenever an area undergoes rapid transformation, there’s an inevitable shake-up of businesses. But if all the traditional, existing firms end up being priced out, then the area loses its soul in spite of all the shiny new buildings.

Surrey Docks Farm wins this year’s Southwark blue plaque

SURREY DOCKS Farm and history centre will be the next Southwark landmark to receive a Blue Plaque, after winning the public’s vote by a landslide.

The urban farm and education centre in Rotherhithe, received 683 votes out of 1,049, in a scheme run by the Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark News.

The runners-up were Sir James Black with 119 votes; The Kirkaldy Museum with 244; and Gertrude Lawrence with three votes.

Farm manager Gemma Hooper told the News: “We are incredibly pleased to win the blue plaque and we’re really looking forward to getting it put up. We worked really hard visiting places in the area getting people to vote for us.”

The farm earned its nomination from the Heritage Association for: “Providing a free community resource for Southwark residents of all ages, seven days per week. The farm site has a rich history, once part of a great shipyard.”

Though the farm opened 41 years ago, Surrey Docks has been the site of remarkable moments in history.

In the early twentieth century the site was the place where river ambulances docked before carrying smallpox victims to floating hospitals out at sea. “A lot of them didn’t come back,” Gemma said.

“We do a lot of history projects about The Forge and the old wharf, with visits to the archives and interviewed elderly residents about what they remember about this docks.

We also have people going mud larking along the banks and we find all sorts of treasures.

“Along the River Walk trail we have a little

display of Metropolitan Asylum Board crockery that we are putting together.”

Gemma added that the farm is almost entirely dependent on grants and charitable donations.

After losing funding from Southwark Council at the beginning of the year, the farm revealed it needs £400,000 per year to keep itself going with 200 animals running, and another £24,000 per year for the food, bedding and veterinary bills.

“We were really grateful to be included as one of the mayor’s chosen charities this year which has really helped us financially,” she said.

“But there’s less funding out there for charities of all sorts, so we have been making a big push to market our own produce like meat and veg we produce on the farm.

“I am finding sustainable ways for the farm to keep going that can also be useful things for the community to get behind.”

TfL have announced plans to create yellow box junctions to quicken the “snail’s pace” traffic in Jamaica Road, Bermondsey. TfL also promised to cancel 2017 resurfacing works in Jamaica Road, which would have meant 20 separate lane closures over the course of a month.

The permanent yellow-box junctions will be installed today, at three Jamaica Road junctions, with Abbey Street, St James’ Road, and Southwark Park Road.

Alan Bristow, director of road space management at TfL, told the News: “Having listened to the local community we will be installing yellow box junctions at three locations along Jamaica Road.

This will help relieve congestion particularly while the work on Tower Bridge is carried out.

The move is being claimed as a victory

by Riverside ward councillors, who gathered a 500-signature petition to campaign for the yellow boxes.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Riverside, Eliza Mann, said: “Traffic along Jamaica Road has been worse than ever since Tower Bridge closed, so it is brilliant news that Liberal Democrat calls for yellow boxes at these three key junctions have been listened to.

A CAMBERWELL care home has been rated “inadequate” by government inspectors, after finding unsafe conditions and understaffing.

The Burgess Park Care Home, run by Four Seasons Health Care, was visited unannounced by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors on September 13.

The review of the 41-resident home in Picton Street, specialising in dementia care, followed an assessment last year that found it “requiring improvements”.

With regards to safety, the report said residents’ call bells were not answered promptly.

“A person rang their call bell and waited for 30 minutes before staff attended to them,” inspectors said.

“We observed that on two occasions of ten minutes and fifteen minutes, people's call bells were not answered. One resident told inspectors “I rang my bell for hours,

and no one came.”

Inspectors added that Burgess Park Care Homes was: “Understaffed to the point that toiletry needs could not be responded to in a timely manner. We found that some people did not have their personal hygiene met promptly.

“We spoke to one person who told us ‘I like to be washed and dressed by 9am but it doesn't happen. They wash me about 12pm or 1pm’.”

The CQC said it interviewed residents, their relatives, Four Seasons’ regional manager, the care home manager, nurses, care workers, visiting health care professional and a maintenance worker.

Some confided that staffing levels felt “unsafe”, with some saying they felt too short of time to take tea or lunch breaks.

Although the report said staff received adequate training, some told inspectors they “did not feel listened to” because managers “did not support them when they raised concerns with them”.

A spokesperson for Four Seasons, Robert Mitchell, told the News it had “more to do”

but the pollution caused by vehicles stopstarting or crawling along at a snail’s pace is also bad for the health of residents living around Jamaica Road and all pedestrians.

“Liberal Democrat councillors are fighting residents’ corner. We want to thank everyone who signed our petition for yellow boxes. This is a great community victory which will hopefully improve traffic flows in Jamaica Road.”

The policy change from TfL also came as welcome news for a local taxi firm, which said ongoing traffic nightmares had dented its trade.

Star Cars driver Huseyin Kavaz previously told the News that yellow boxes were needed, and said his firm should be compensated for lost trade caused by the nightmare congestion.

Another driver said: “They should just get rid of the width restriction and we also need yellow boxes at the junctions on the road. In the long term they need to build another bridge that cars can go over to solve this issue. There’s nothing after Tower Bridge.”

“The home was rated as good for providing effective care. The inspectors saw that staff were supported through regular training, supervision, and appraisals to support them in their caring roles. The inspectors also said that staff acted on people’s changing needs and their care plans were updated to reflect them.

Residents and their relatives were involved in assessment and review of their care.”

AN ITALIAN satanist obsessed with TV show Breaking Bad has been found guilty of murdering a police officer and dissolving his remain in an acid bath.

Stefano Brizzi, 50, boiled and roasted parts of PC Semple’s body and attempted to eat them with chopsticks.

But Brizzi could not bring himself to consume the body and turned to a method featured in the cult TV show when he tried to make the parts vanish in the bathtub.

The killer, who worked as a web developer for merchant bank Morgan Stanley, had met the 59-year-old victim for an S&M session through the gay dating app Grindr.

PC Semple, who was on duty when he arranged to meet his killer, was reported missing by his partner on April 2, sparking a massive manhunt.

Police were alerted to a “smell of death” coming from Brizzi’s flat on the Peabody Trust Estate in Southwark Street, on April 7.

Brizzi answered his door wearing nothing but a pair of pink underpants and aviator shades and quickly announced: “I’ve tried to dissolve the body – I’ve killed a police officer.”

He added: “I killed him last week. I met him on Grindr and I killed him.

Police found a mixture of acid and body parts in Brizzi’s bath and other remains were found in his communal bin on the estate.

But Brizzi eventually got on his bicycle with parts of the body and tossed them into the Thames at Rotherhithe.

One of PC Semple’s severed feet was found by a member of the public along the Thames in Bermondsey.

Brizzi told the two policewomen who first attended his flat: “I promised the devil I would kill at the first chance,” adding: “I didn’t know who he was. I didn’t like him.”

He said he had been told to murder PC Semple while he was high on crystal meth.

The Italian later claimed he could have accidentally strangled PC Semple.

His defence lawyer suggested it was possible the officer suffered a heart attack during a sex game which involved him sitting on the officer’s face choking him with a collar and lead, while PC Semple wore a neoprene gimp mask.

On Monday a jury of seven men and three women found Brizzi guilty of murder after deliberating for 30 hours and 46 minutes by a majority of ten-totwo.

Brizzi, who earlier admitted obstructing a coroner by chopping up PC Semple’s body, did not show a flicker of emotion as he was convicted.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard, the Recorder of London, is expected to adjourn before passing sentence.

After meeting at around 3pm on April 1 both men used Grindr to invite others around chemsex party.

One man, known only as CD to protect his identity, arrived at just after 7pm.

Brizzi told the crestfallen party-goer over the intercom: “We’re having a situation here. Someone fell ill but we’re taking care of it. So our party is cancelled.”

It is believed he arrived at the exact moment Brizzi was strangling PC Semple, but the killer was so calm the witness thought someone was just being sick.

“He sounded concerned and a little bit

upset but okay. He didn’t sound worried – he was upset and concerned,” the witness said.

Brizzi sobbed loudly on the witness stand as he described the consensual sado-masochistic sex game he and PC Semple played, claiming the officer “died in a state of erotic bliss”.

He said they smoked crystal meth together, saying: “It was just the way that a chemsex encounter would happen and the purpose was just to have some sexual encounter.”

“He was calling me “daddy”, “boss” and “sir”,” he claimed.

“He actually looked at me and asked me “can I please be collared sir?”

“I was trying to please his desires and unfortunately that’s how the whole thing has gone wrong.

“As the game progressed it became increasingly unfamiliar to me, he started to ask for things I have never done before – things I have always deemed as dangerous like leaving him without breath and trying to strangle him.”

He told the court PC Semple asked him to sit on his face and use his buttocks to suffocate him.

He said they had agreed on some safety phrases and a safety word to indicate when he should stop.

The word “red” was their panic word, he said, to indicate he should stop immediately.

“He never said red,” sobbed Brizzi.

He claimed he heard a snapping sound as he pulled on the leash just as PC Semple lost consciousness, then panicked when he found officer’s police badge in his pockets.

The Italian said he spent the entire seven days between the killing and his arrest in a drugged up haze fuelled by crystal meth and sleeping pills.

But he managed to go to an EE store to get his phone fixed, and to a hardware store to buy the tools and chemicals to dispose of the body.

“It’s as if my mind was working on its own, I really can’t remember things,” Brizzi said.

“I was trying to hide this dead body. I

He said in his drug-induced delirium he invented the story about Satan because it seemed more plausible than what had happened.

“Would it be believable for them to come to my house, see the carnage, and say “It was just a sex game gone wrong?”

“I believed I had killed him by strangling him, by accident of course, but I had been talking to him the whole time.

“It was like I was in a dream – I panicked and I was totally exhausted physically and mentally and I couldn’t cope with the idea that I had killed a police officer.”

Brizzi used three different types of saws to hack PC Semple’s body apart.

He insisted said he had only put sections of the body in the oven to melt away the fat so the acid could reach the muscles and the tissue.

A knife and four black candles were found under the bed when Brizzi’s home was searched, and a PDF of the Satanic bible was found on his computer.

At the police station, Brizzi had told

the custody sergeant: “I took crystal meth yesterday when I was thinking I should get rid of the corpse.

“Four days had passed by and nobody had seen or said anything. I thought I was getting away with it. I had nearly finished but I took a shot [of crystal meth]. I was going to finish the job today. As you can see, this man was a very big man and all I have left is two buckets.”

But he later claimed he only had an intellectual interest in Satanism because it was a rejection of the Catholicism he had grown up with.

Brizzi told police in interview: “I kind of said “goodbye”… luckily I didn’t know him. I thought it was a nice way to… make a funeral on the River Thames.”

PC Semple, originally from Inverness, Scotland, was last seen leaving London’s Shard at 12.30pm on April 1 after an on-duty meeting at the five-star Shangri-La hotel.

He had worked in banking before joining the Metropolitan Police and was attached to a Westminster Council anti-social behaviour unit.

PC Semple had lived with partner Gary Meeks in Greenhithe, Kent, for 25 years.

Brizzi was an ‘evil and calculating man’ say Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor

BOROUGH MAN Stefano Brizzi has been called an “evil and calculating man” by London CPS’s deputy chief crown prosecutor, after he was found guilty of murdering PC Gordon Semple.

Brizzi claimed the death of PC Smple he met on social media site Grindr was “accidental and the result of a sex game gone wrong” in April.

Malcolm McHaffie, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London, said: “Stefano Brizzi is an evil and calculating man who intentionally killed Gordon Semple and then made gruesome attempts to dispose of his body.

“He cynically lied to the court and the jury, claiming that Mr Semple’s tragic death was caused when a sex game went horribly wrong and that he had taken drugs which caused him to try to cover up the death. This was all fabricated by Brizzi to evade justice.

“In taking steps to fully understand Brizzi’s lifestyle, we scrutinised many thousands of social media messages.

Piecing together the events of that evening was equally challenging, bearing in mind the extreme lengths that Brizzi went to remove traces of his crime and cover his tracks.

“However, built on the foundation of a strong police investigation, and detailed toxicology and pathology evidence, we put a very strong case before the court and Brizzi has now been brought to justice for his terrible

crimes.

“We hope that the outcome today provides some comfort to friends and family of Mr Semple.”

A statement on behalf of the family of Gordon Semple said: “Gordon was a loyal and much loved long term partner, brother, brother in law, uncle, cousin and friend to all.

“We were devastated when the news broke of Gordon’s murder and the circumstances which are still incredibly hard to deal with.

It is still insurmountably upsetting.

“At Gordon’s funeral we met many of his friends and work colleagues – we were proud to hear how fondly they thought of Gordon.

“Gordon will be sadly missed by our family.

Gordon we miss you so much, may you rest in peace.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL will review how it can improve the chances of domestic abuse victims finding safe refuge, after a longfought campaign from feminist group Sisters Uncut.

Members of South East London Sisters Uncut met Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, councillor Stephanie Cryan, on November 9. The meeting was arranged after they flashmobbed the council’s Tooley Street officers on September 20.

Sisters Uncut wrote to the News after meeting to say they had won a “huge victory” for domestic abuse survivors.

Campaign member Jasmina wrote: “But it’s nowhere near enough.

Southwark is stripping vulnerable people of their dignity, and it will take serious political will to rectify the damage.”

Joining the campaigners to meet Cllr Cryan were two domestic abuse victims – referred to as J and C for their own safety – for whom the council will now “review” their situations and try to find suitable homes.

Cllr Cryan said: “Nobody could fail to be moved by Sisters Uncut’s tribute to abuse victims, this is a subject that the council takes extremely seriously and I

thank the Sisters I spoke to for their bravery in speaking out.

“I had a very positive meeting with representatives from Sisters Uncut about how they feel we could do more to help the survivors of abuse from a housing perspective.

“If there are any proactive changes we can make to our housing allocations policy, we will look at them as part of our wider work to ensure our waiting list is fair and appropriate to need - other points we discussed may involve consultation with tenants or potentially training opportunities for staff.

“We have agreed to have a follow up meeting to respond to any outstanding points in the near future and will keep the momentum up.”

Southwark added that it will provide information and training about domestic abuse for the benefit of its housing officers who assess victims.

Using freedom-of-information requests, Sisters Uncut found that 1,270 of Southwark’s council homes were at one point vacant in 2016. Also that Southwark turned away 47 per cent of male and female domestic-abuse victims who approached it to find refuge.

The borough also currently has 24 beds available for temporary accommodation, half the number in Bromley.

FAMILY AND old friends have paid loving tributes to Tony Ritchie, the former leader of Southwark Council, who was also mayor of the borough from 1989 to 1990.

THE NATIONAL Lottery is appealing again to Southwark residents, in its search for the player who bought a £1m winning EuroMillions ticket on October 25.

Mr Ritchie died in hospital on November 9, aged 71. He had suffered with Myelitis, an infection or inflammation of the spinal cord which affects the nervous system.

His family wrote to the News to leave their tribute, calling the late leader a “great family man who wore his heart on his sleeve”.

They wrote: “After falling ill earlier in the year, it is with great sadness that Tony, our Husband, Brother, Dad and Granddad has passed away.

“Tony served Southwark as a Labour councillor, Leader of Southwark Council. Mayor of Southwark, Leader of the London Fire and Civil Defence

Councillor Dora Dixon-Fyle, mayor from 2015 to 2016, said: “He was my ward councillor nearly 20 years ago and was there when I went for my first interview to become a councillor.

“He could talk about anything. Give him subject X and boom, he was there, and was so moving when he spoke.

“I visited his wife Iris at their home in Godstone [Surrey] the other day. It’s such a beautiful little place and beautiful

little home. It’s a shame he didn’t get to enjoy it for very long after he retired.”

Speaking before Mr Ritchie’s death, councillor Ian Wingfield called him a “larger than life character”.

Cllr Wingfield said: “To survive as a Southwark councillor for 28 years, believe me, is an achievement in itself.

Behind the outward appearances lay a bright intelligence.”

Mr Ritchie was also leader of the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority. He was born in Caterham, Surrey, in 1945, and moved to the borough in mid-1970s to live in Dulwich.

A funeral service will be held at 3pm on November 24, at Surrey and Sussex Crematorium, Balcombe Road in Crawley. The family has said all who wish to visit and celebrate his life will be welcome.

Council agrees to reconsider new cycle friendly road layout after local outrage

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has held conciliatory talks with Bellenden Road residents who last week said the new cycle-friendly road layout would be “dangerous” and “a nightmare”.

Ongoing roadworks currently block Bellenden Road in Peckham, while the pavement-widening scheme takes shape.

The worst fears were raised by Aubyn Graham, manager of the Elim House Day Centre for elderly and disabled people. Its buses transport wheelchair-bound people every morning and evening.

Neighbours and Aubyn jointly contacted the News when they saw the redesign would mean them losing their car parking, and reduce the one-way street to only being wide enough for one car.

At the meeting on November 10, a council officer agreed to review the layout if problems arise.

It was agreed that the end of Bellenden Road will not be blocked at the junction with Highshore Road, and Elim House’s buses will be permitted to take elderly residents to the centre, but not park in the street. The nearest available parking for residents will be 20 to 30 metres away.

Fears were raised about elderly and disabled people needing to get access to their activity centre

Southwark also promised to liaise with police, fire brigade and ambulance services, which are known for driving the wrong way up the one-way system.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “I’m pleased officers were able to meet with the Bellenden Road residents last week. Thankfully, we now have a clearer understanding of the concerns held by residents and will be feeding their comment into our plans.

Similarly, the local residents now have a better understanding of the challenges we face in balancing the needs of all road users.”

Before the works began, the council said it held public meetings and distributed 1,609 leaflets about the plans, and received 200 responses.

A PROPERTY develop looks set to redevelop the Aylesham Shopping Centre in Peckham, after announcing it is seeking locals’ views.

Ongoing mouse issues were so severe that the Mój Sklep Polish supermarket on the first floor close on October 22, as its owner feared for the hygiene of his stock.

And the owner of Magic Carpets, Reza Heidari, said mice were eating his carpets, despite both businesses repeatedly putting down poison.

“I have more storage downstairs,” Reza said.

“There’s mice sh** all around, even though I put poison around, but nothing happens.

“The mice come in from upstairs and downstairs,” Reza said, and he pointed to gaps in the ceiling he had to close, where mice had been entering.

“One time a customer asked me to open a carpet for them to have a look, and two or three mice came out in front of the customer. I didn’t know what to do.”

SHOPKEEPERS IN the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre have said problems with mice have blighted their businesses.

shelves, and putting all their stock into storage again overnight. Otherwise the food would be eaten by the mice which “always found their way into the supermarket”.

Because it was so time consuming for the Sklep’s staff to packing and unpacking twice a day, they were limited by how much stock they could put on their shelves.

“It meant the shop looked empty, with half-filled shelves,” Ian said. “It gave the impression the shop was in a bad state and we didn’t having much to sell, so people wouldn’t come in. But I we went to all that length because there was no way I would sell food to people if I didn’t think it was safe.

“Five years ago I was able to run a successful business that people enjoyed coming to and could rely on.

“But things changed dramatically a year ago and I cannot get Delancey or Savills [hired by Delancey to manage the centre] to help. But they told me it was my responsibility to run a profitable

business.

“Until recently I had been led to believe the mouse problems were an isolated issue with just my store, which obviously is not the case.”

Other business owners the News spoke to also said anonymously that they have had mouse problems. This was despite many of them seeing their services charges increase. Ian added that his service charge increased “20 per cent every year” since Delancey took over the site.

A spokesperson from the Elephant and Castle shopping centre said: “We remain committed to maintaining a clean, safe and vibrant shopping environment for all those who use the centre. As with any city centre building of this size, we have an extensive pest management contract in place.”

Tiger Developments Ltd has said it hopes to “potentially deliver a bigger and better Morrisons store and a new retail centre including a mix of shops and leisure uses that will complement the existing town centre”.

The company – which is owned by multinational asset management firm BlackRock – will host a ticket-only public meeting next Wednesday November 23 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Rye Lane Baptist Church.

A press release from the company added: “The site could also help create new routes through the town centre as well as spaces for small and medium sized businesses, community facilities and private, affordable new homes.”

The News reported in February that 1,000 homes could be built on a 20-storey development. But a spokesperson for Tiger Developments has since said it is reviewing the number of homes that will be available, and that this is a topic it wishes to discuss with residents.

A petition by community group Peckham Vision with 3,000 signatures was handed into Southwark Council earlier this year. Its member Eileen Conn said people were demanding that any new scheme would not “ruin the view from the Peckham rooftops that are now iconic.”

Space for the workshop event hosted by Tiger is limited to 50 attendees, due to the size of the venue, with tickets allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis. Discussion will also be led by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.

Royal seal of approval as Brunel Tunnel returns to its entertainment roots ROTHERHITHE

PRINCE EDWARD has given the Brunel Museum’s new underground theatre the royal seal of approval, reopening the London Underground’s oldest structure as it returns to its entertainment roots.

The Earl of Wessex officially reopened the 150-year-old Grade II listed Grand Entrance Hall in Rotherhithe, on November 9, to an audience of 120 people. Theatre Lapis performed an excerpt from their play The Red Candle: Mermaids in the East, which is running until November 20.

Prince Edward congratulated the Museum on the new gallery and historic, atmospheric performance space, which is half the size of Shakespeare’s Globe. The Prince also thanked the volunteers who created and maintain the gardens, as well as children from Albion School, who created award winning sculptures for the grounds.

A new book, Brunel’s Great Eastern, was also launched, with a foreword written by actress Joanna Lumley, who

described Brunel as a man who loved the arts and the theatre.

Engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, whose first and final projects were in east London, built a railway to Bristol, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, and the ship that laid the first transAtlantic cable, but the underground theatre is said to be one of his most extraordinary creations. The Tunnel was intended for cargo, but in 1843 it was full of sword swallowers, fire eaters, magicians, Ethiopian serenaders, Indian dancers, Chinese singers and dancing and performing horses. Entertainers were forced to leave in 1865 when the Tunnel was sold to the railway and became a vital part of London’s transport network.

Brunels’ Great Eastern with epigram by the Prince and introduction by Joanna Lumley is out now.

A BURGLAR who ran over and badly injured a police officer using a stolen car in Dulwich has been locked up for seven years.

On April 14, police stopped Curtis Naulty and Aaron Rose after the Land Rover they were in had been seen at a burglary a few hours earlier.

Two officers in a marked police car saw the Land Rover driving in Village Way and signalled for the driver to pull over.

Naulty, the driver, pulled over and the police parked in front of the vehicle to block it from driving off.

A PC van with two officers arrived shortly after and stopped behind the Land Rover.

One of the police officer's immediately got out of the car and went to the driver's door.

He shouted "stop police" and grabbed the steering wheel and Naulty by the clothing in the middle of the torso.

In a desperate bid to escape, Naulty then reversed at high speed and struck the approaching officer.

The officer was swept off his feet by the door and thrown a distance at speed, before being crashed into a parked car, where he flew up in the air and landed on the floor.

His colleague from the police car and members of the public rushed to his aid.

After the crash Naulty legged it from the car towards the train tracks at North Dulwich Station. Rose also ran from the passenger seat, but was caught by officers from the police van after a short chase.

London Ambulance Service arrived shortly afterwards and took the injured officer to a hospital in central London.

Naulty was arrested nine days later on April 23: the same day the injured officer left hospital with a broken leg. It is said he is still recovering from his injuries.

Thirty-six-year-old Naulty of Manor Road in Norwood Junction was found guilty at Inner London Crown Court on October 31 of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, two counts of burglary and three counts of handling stolen goods.

The jury found him not guilty of two counts of handling stolen goods, one count of burglary, and of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent.

Rose, also 36, of Canterbury Grove in West Norwood was found guilty of two counts of handling stolen goods and two counts of burglary. He had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of handling stolen goods, but was found not guilty of one count of burglary.

Naulty was sentenced on the same day to seven years' imprisonment and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £150.

Rose was sentenced to three and a half years' imprisonment and was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £150.

Detective constable Claire Spiteri, the investigating officer, said: "These prolific burglars showed no regard for the safety of our police officers or the general public.

"The officer received serious injuries through Naulty's actions and may never be able to resume to full duty. He is still suffering longterm consequences from the events of April 14. He was very lucky not to have been killed.

"We are very pleased with the jury's decision to convict Naulty and Rose and the sentences handed out so they can pay the price for their crimes."

Police appeal after man, 82, robbed

CAMBERWELL: Police have appealled for witnesses after an elderly man was robbed in Camberwell.

The robbery took place near a block of flats in Warner Road, shortly before 2pm on Thursday, August 18.

The 82-year-old victim was attacked by a man who stole a shopping bag and wallet from him.

A total of £80 in cash was removed from the wallet, before it was discarded and later discovered by police.

EVELINA LONDON has officially opened an extension to its Neonatal Unit (NNU) meaning more sick and premature babies than ever will receive “round-the-clock critical care”.

KIND-HEARTED medics from St Thomas’ Hospital made it possible for a seriously ill patient to attend his son’s wedding.

Paul Cartwright, 57, was admitted to the hospital in early October suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding due to the long-term effects of cancer treatment many years ago.

Paul was hoping to be discharged in time for his 30-year-old son Sam’s big day but he was not well enough in time and asked the High Dependency Unit team if there was a way he could be there. The unit managed to arrange for Dr Adrian Pakavakis, an intensive care consultant, and Linda Cooper, a senior nurse from the critical care response team, to take him to the wedding.

“At the time I was feeling very depressed because I was bleeding and there was no end in sight. All I could do was wait to see if it stopped. The weeks I’d been in the hospital were clocking up and I became fearful of what my life would be like when I eventually went home,” said Paul.

“Things seemed very bleak when Sam’s wedding was approaching. A couple of days before the wedding, the critical care team told me I would be able to go, which was a huge relief.

“It was lovely to see Sam marry his wife, Juliet. He was so happy that I was there and it was beneficial for my family, including my wife Sally and younger son Max, that I could be there, as they would have felt very bad if I hadn’t.

“Seeing me there was very comforting for them as it made me appear to be less ill. It also meant that Sam felt comfortable going on his honeymoon without worrying about me.

“Dr Pakavakis and Linda were discreetly by my side, which made me feel very secure. The day was a good distraction from what I was going through. I stayed for a couple of hours for the ceremony and photos before needing to go back to St Thomas’.

“Witnessing my eldest son get married was a major life event that I would have missed had it not been for the care provided by the team. I’m so grateful for the team from St Thomas’ for making it happen.”

Paul’s bleeding stopped shortly after the wedding and he has since been able to go home.

Clare Meadows, matron for critical care, said: “As a critical care team we were absolutely delighted that we could support Paul to attend his son’s wedding.

“We pride ourselves on providing high quality care for patients but sometimes they need more than conventional treatments.

“It is wonderful to be able to go the extra mile to make a positive impact on a patient’s wellbeing and we hope to do similar things for other patients in future.”

“The expansion of the unit is an amazing opportunity to extend the care we provide to more babies than ever before, making a serious difference to the outlook for some of our smallest patients.”

The News has been fundraising over the last five years for Evelina to raise £100,000.

The extension will help address a national shortage of neonatal cots as there are now 22 intensive care cots and twelve high dependency cots in the NNU – an increase of 50 per cent.

The unit was officially opened by James Melville-Ross, whose twins, Thomas and Alice, were cared for at the NNU after being born at 24 weeks.

He said: “The Neonatal Unit enabled us to realise the gift of parenthood. It’s a huge honour to be part of today’s celebrations and to get the opportunity to say thank you to the NNU and its incredible people.

“Without the amazing staff here, our story would have only been one page, instead of chapters full to the brim with new experiences and laughter every Charlie Creasey with mum Maria Creasey single day. We will never, ever forget and dad Will Hanson (main); (below) Dr Tim what they have given us, the joy that we Watts, Georgie and James Melville-Ross have as a family.

FIVE SOUTHWARK Irish dancers have been placed in the top ten of the CRG World Dance Championships competition in Ireland.

Dancers Katy Foxcroft placed fifth, Megan Rogers tenth, Saskia Larking eighth, Sophia Larking tenth in the top championship level, and Clodagh Murphy tenth in the intermediate championships.

Sarah Carragher, one of the teachers, said: “Congratulations to all our

dancers. We are so proud of your achievements.

“You all worked so hard and your hard work paid off, you all made the Top Ten in the World!”

The dancers are from the Carragher Academy which meets at Bermondsey’s Beormund Centre.

Research from property advice service CVS has estimated that 11,378 firms in the borough could see their rate pay outs rise by an average of 26.36 per cent.

Each business will have its rateable value based on the price it would fetch if put for sale on the open market, using property prices from April 1, 2015. Until now, each business’s rateable value had been based on property values from 2008 – before the financial crash.

Southwark Chamber of Commerce met to discuss the increases last week. The chamber’s chair, Richard Kalmar MD of KALMARS estate agents, told the News: “Each property’s rateable value is different depending on where they are.

High streets are rated much more highly than back streets.

“Places like Borough High Street will see a big increase, because eight years ago it was relatively quiet. For them the effect will be particularly swingeing.”

A handout from the meeting showed that Evans Cycles in Tooley Street and Bermondsey Street Coffee will pay an

extra sixteen per cent, while Sainsbury’s in Borough High Street will pay 68 per cent.

“My business is going to pay another twelve per cent per year plus inflation,” Richard said. “In some areas it’s going up by 40 per cent, and it tends to be the bigger companies that are paying more.

But the end effect will be that for smaller businesses that are struggling like an old sandwich bar, this increase will be unsustainable.”

Meanwhile other parts of London that have rapidly become more prosperous will see their rates increase the most. The Financial Times reported in September that “rapidly gentrifying” Brixton and Shoreditch will also see increases of up to 120 per cent.

Richard added that business rates were the biggest source of revenue for the government per year, and contributed £26bn to its budget for 2015-2016, before the money was redistributed back to the coffers of local councils.

He added that the idea of reviewing business rate levels “isn’t that the government end up getting more money, it’s to make them fairer”. To even the playing field, less well-off areas such as Liverpool will see a decrease in the amount they hand over. Growing areas like London will be charged more.

Ex-NFL player takes Guy’s patients to Wembley game

A FORMER American Football player visited the Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital and took two patients to see the Washington Redskins play the Cincinnati Bengals at Wembley Stadium.

Ex-NFL star Chris Draft made the visit as founder of Team Draft, the lung cancer charity he established with his wife, Keasha, who died of the disease at the age of 38.

Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and funding by “shattering the misconception that lung cancer is purely a smoker’s disease.”

Jimmy, who runs charity UK Homes 4 Heroes, said: “The new cancer centre is great, brilliant. I’d read a lot about Chris and his story so meeting him was a real pleasure”.

A “VERY dangerous” man will spend four years behind bars for running over a woman while taking part in a fifteen-person brawl in Elephant and Castle.

Nigel Kedi, 23, of Lowry Road in Dagenham, was jailed at Inner London Crown Court on November 9 having pleaded guilty on September 25.

He had admitted guilt to attempting to cause life-changing injuries to the 24-year-old woman he ran over, as well as to counts of affray, dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, and driving without insurance.

He committed all the offences on June 4 in Elephant Road, by the entrance to Elephant and Castle Railway Station, in the midst of a huge fight that erupted at 7am.

Police were called to reports of the mass punch-up, and that Kedi had knocked the woman down. She was taken to hospital, but fortunately her injuries were not life threatening.

Police arrested Kedi later that day after spotting him driving between New Kent Road and Falmouth Road.

As well as the four years he will spend behind bars, he will have to relearn how to drive after four years and repass his test.

CCTV showed Kedi's involvement in the fight, as well as the collision involving the car he was driving.

Detective constable Michael Esangbedo of Southwark police said: “Kedi is a very dangerous man and he is now off our streets. He had no choice but to plead guilty due to the CCTV evidence.

“His sentence reflects the gravity of the offences and I am relieved the victim was not badly hurt.”

Two other suspects were arrested in connection with the violence from that day.

A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged on October 13 with affray, assault on police and possession of class B drugs. He will appear in custody at the Inner London Crown Court at a later date for trial.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested and charged on September 25 with possession of class A drugs. She will appear at Camberwell Magistrates Court at a later date.

ELEPHANT & CASTLE: The London South Bank University has announced its intentions to transform its campus, and invest up to £500m.

The plans are currently in the early stages, but the university is currently seeking development partners.

Its initial plans to redevelop its Technopark campus include new lecture theatres, multi-use laboratories, general teaching spaces, conference facilities and student accommodation.

A spokesperson for the university told the News: “London South Bank University is at the initial stages of realising plans to redevelop the London Road and Technopark areas of its campus.

“Over its 125 year history LSBU, in common with all London universities, has seen many changes to its local environment and the needs of its students, teaching and professional staff.

“As such, a sustained programme of investment in first class facilities to support student success and deliver real world impact lies at the heart of the University’s long-term corporate strategy.

“Future investment plans include major improvements across the whole campus to enhance further the experience of students by repurposing underutilised building stock and, in doing so, contributing to the regeneration of the local area as whole.”

Trump therapy for Southwark!

HE GREATEST threat to Southwark and our kids’ future is the climate emergency.

2016 is the hottest year ever on records, just like 2015 and 2014 were. Scientists said this month that if carbon emissions keep rising at current rates we are facing a disastrous rise of 7C in our kids’ lifetimes.

They say this would be “apocalyptic” and “incompatible with life as we know it.”

The election of climate-science denying President Trump in the US is a fundamental threat to tackling in time, the emergency that faces Southwark and the world.

But we all can take positive action rather than simply despair.

Peter John: Keep your promise to resist the Housing Act

IT IS no exaggeration to say that the Housing and Planning Act is set to destroy all social and council housing within a generation.

It is aimed at forcing councils to sell off council housing, making tenants on moderate incomes pay a tenant tax and ending the right to lifetime secure tenancies.

Southwark Council admits that the effect on Southwark people will be devastating. That’s why we were pleased when Southwark’s Council Leader Peter John committed last February to call a public meeting in May and said he would encourage all tenants and residents to join the campaign against the Act. This commitment was also made in April by then Cabinet Member for Housing Richard Livingstone and Mayor Dora Dixon-Fyle. Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Cabinet Member for Housing also talked about supporting this at a meeting of tenants in the summer.

But now we are told this public meeting won’t be going aheadbecause Peter John thinks it’s already happened! It’s true there have been many meetings and activities in Southwark to oppose the Housing Act but not one of them have been called, or promoted, by the Council.

At the recent Axe the Housing Act Summit a councillor from Islington talked about the meeting they had called- 600 people turned up- and the council had also publicised its opposition to the Act widely. The Islington councillor said other councils should do the same. We agree. If all those against the Act get together and seriously resist the government we believe we can stop the Act. It’s not fully implemented yet. There’s still time to put a spanner in the works. But councils must do their bit.

Our message to Councillor John and Southwark’s Labour Group is simple: Hundreds of tenants heard you promise to call a public meetingplease do so now. And on 23rd November at 12pm Axe the Housing Act has called a protest outside parliament to coincide with the Autumn Statement- publicise this to the people of Southwark and come to

the protest to pledge your support. It really is the least you can do. Making promises and not keeping them is a sure-fire way to increase the cynicism that most people already feel about politicians, and a Labour council that verbally opposes vicious government policies but then does little to organise against those policies will, in the end, undermine its own support. Don’t make that mistake. Help us fight this Act now.

Crane should be protected by law

WE ALL have to abide by the law, we are told.

Unless that is, you are part of Southwark Council’s Planning Department.

Last week saw the end of Rotherhithe’s ' Historical Red Crane' (Scotch Derrick) when the planning committee granted permission for it to be demolished and replaced by blocks of flats up to twelve storeys in height. Nothing new there you might think? But you'd be wrong.

The main objection by local residents on the night was the fact that the application contravenes the ' ‘Mayors London Plan' by, not 10% not 50% not 100% but by almost 300%. How? The site is designated as ‘Suburban' in the 'London Plan' and also the 'Area Action Plan', meaning it is only capable of supporting 24/25 flats.

The developer put in for 74 flats and the planning committee granted permission. I don't blame any developer for maximizing their profits, but I do blame the council for completely ignoring and abusing planning law.

attendees on the night, stating that "They are looking into the possibility of Listing the Crane". Attempts by some planning committee members to postpone the application until after the English Heritage decision were rebuffed by the Chairman , Nick Dolzel, after taking legal advice. It was agreed however that 'If' the Crane is awarded Grade II Status, the application will have to be resubmitted and re-heard.

Residents plus, Cllr Dan Whitehead, put a very good case on the night, but were very angry at witnessing the council blatantly abusing planning law on designation, which local residents fought so hard to get on the statute book some ten years ago.

Remember the Council’s slogan ' Low, Clean & Green' it should now be ' High, Dense & Grey'.

Rotherhithe residents accept that there's going to be high rise and dense development around Canada Water Masterplan Area, which is designated as Urban Density. But they won't accept planning law being abused in this way.

Southwark Council’s latest proposal is to build up to 26 storey blocks on the ' Suburban' South Dock Boatyard is another prime example of planning law abuse. Residents fought some epic battles here in Downtown, it seems like we have another battle on our hands.

For those of us who have studied history will know what turbulent times they were during the ‘20s and ‘30s, this war was a lesson the West should have " taken seriously " instead they openly supported the Fascists by their inaction.

Stand up for NHS staff UR NATIONAL Health Service is one of Labour’s finest achievements – a universal health service, free at the point of delivery, for every person, no matter their income or background.

Over the years I have had time to reflect again and again on just how important the NHS is to me, to my family and to so many residents across Southwark and beyond, and how much we owe to the hundreds of thousands of doctors, nurses and support staff who run our hospitals and clinics.

Earlier this year my mum had to be admitted to St George’s Hospital after becoming seriously ill with an infection. It was a worrying time for all of our family, but we were all so grateful for the excellent care she received which enabled her full recovery.

Only a few years ago St George’s was rated as a ‘Good’ hospital, but in the last few weeks it has been rated as ‘Inadequate’ for safety, with a rating of ‘Requires Improvement’ overall. And this isn’t an isolated issue. Last year King’s College Hospital was rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ and the London Ambulance Service was rated as ‘Inadequate’.

Reading through each of the Care Quality Commission reports it is clear that we can be proud of the immensely hard work of our local doctors, nurses and support staff, but they have been desperately let down by both the last Tory-Lib Dem coalition government and the current Tory government.

Our hospitals are seeing more patients as a result of government cuts to funding for social care, which also make it harder to discharge elderly people back home once they have recovered. A situation of growing demand, simply cannot be sustained if resources are still being cut.

The Tory-Lib Dem coalition refused to train the number of nurses that we need and our hospitals now have a desperate shortage, forcing them to pay expensive agency staff and overtime rates. And the government is planning to cut bursaries for trainee nurses, making it harder to become a nurse at a time when we need extra student nurses more than ever. The government’s refusal to give reassurance on the status of European doctors and nurses working hard in our NHS also risks making the situation even worse.

We must all continue to stand up for the hard working frontline staff in our NHS and to insist that the government provides the funding the NHS desperately needs.

Donny Stixx leaves us lingering between sympathy and revulsion and at the end – shocked by what unfolds.

The Bunker has a unique character that feels both classical and contemporary. It has its charming and helpful stuff, a handy “mind-your-head” bar and three different types of seats one can choose from: traditional seating (straight in front of the stage), a closer-to-theperformance seating, and comfortable seating with soft, cosy cushions (the one you definitely should go for). Rogues and scoundrels in Brockley JOHN GAY’S classic Beggar's Opera is given a modern twist by the Lazarus Theatre Company with new lyrics and music by Bobby Locke and Chris Drohan and it's quite something, writes Matt Baker...

This was my first visit to the Jack Studio Theatre, having passed by many times I looked forward to finally stepping in. The space is shared with the rather gentrified Brockley Jack pub, which is handy for those keen on a beverage to accompany their culture. The theatre itself was an intimate space that suited this particular night’s entertainment.

The Beggar's Opera is essentially a tale of the scoundrel Macheath and his crimes, scams, and many, many lovers. Our roguish hero lies, cheats, and steals his way through London, breaking laws and hearts in equal measure as the plot moves to its somewhat gruesome ending.

The new lyrics and music by Bobby Locke manage the difficult task of being accessible and entertaining whilst retaining much of the depth and sense of metre that I love in the 1728 original.

Of particular note was Sherwood Alexander who played Macheath.

He gave a performance full of presence that was wonderfully entertaining. The songs were impish and raunchy to the point where I felt a tad uncomfortable in the front row. Indeed, at times the cast tied themselves in carnal knots

From the Elton John Collection This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see one of the world’s greatest private collections of photography, drawn from the classic Modernist period of the 1920s–50s. An incredible group of Man Ray portraits are exhibited together for the first time, having been brought together by Sir Elton John over the past twenty-five years, including portraits of Matisse, Picasso, and Breton.

THE BREAD AND ROSES THEATRE 68 Clapham Manor Street, Clapham, SW4 6DZ (020 8050 3025) The Great and Cynical Having been expelled from his homeland, Diogenes ‘the Dog’ arrives in Athens to live out his old age as a homeless beggar and practice philosophy. He curses the immoral aristocracy, mocks the decadent rich and locks horns with Prince Alexander whose best friend wears dresses, whose mother sleeps with snakes, whose lover has abandoned him and whose father marries every aristocratic woman he encounters.

of such ecstasy I feared for their safety.

My only reservation was that some of the biting satire of Gay's original was lost. And by this I don't mean to say that that this version was a 'West End' version of a classic, but more that whilst the new version retained a wonderful moral disdain for the individual, the wider critique of social institutions was not as forthright and damning as its 18th century predecessor.

This minor piece of pedantry, to which I'm prone, aside, the Lazarus Theatre Company have done a top job, and the excellence of the chorus and choreography made a great night.

For a wonderfully immoral night I highly recommend it.

History will label one of them as a ‘cynic’ and one of them as ‘great’. Relayed by way of bold, Renaissance style verse, this production imagines how the lives of some of histories famous names might have intertwined during the final years of Greece’s classical period when stories, poetry, philosophy and military campaigning jostled for prominence amongst men of new ideas and unswayable opinions. I

n 1947 Joseph Mourat, the oldest of seven children, left a Cyprus that had been ravaged by war for an England where relatives gave him work in their restaurants and cafés, often working in and around Bermondsey, including a café in Tooley Street, writes Michael Holland...

During his early days in England he met Hatice through her brother, a rather beautiful girl from the old country who was over for a holiday. They fell in love and she never returned.

In 1948 the young lovers got married and when Hatice inherited £500 they bought the Windmill Café in Bermondsey Street. Hatice, now a lively and on-the-ball 90, recalls those early days. “My husband was a good man who worked very hard; he never stopped,” she said.

Around this time good fortune brought Islington’s Caledonian Market to the wasteland in front of the café and business boomed. As well as having a lot more customers to feed, Joseph would rent out basement space to traders who would leave their stock with him instead of carting it to and fro each week. Hatice remembers her husband cooking all the local staples such as: stewing steak, roasts, Shepherd’s Pie, and steamed puddings, while their daughter Leyla has memories of being kept under the counter as a baby because both parents had to work.

I asked Hatice if life was hard in 1950s Bermondsey and she replied that ‘when you’re young you don’t think of these things’. The family had happy times in Bermondsey: Leyla, who attended Ilderton Road School, went to gymnastics in the Methodist Hall and spent many hours playing in Pussy Park and on the bombsites, while the café went from strength to strength. After a few good years the Mourats bought the sweet shop next door and turned both the upstairs into one home to accommodate the growing family.

As time went by Joseph created a grand luncheon club on the third floor of the four storey building, that was initially to cater for the wealthy owners of the many businesses in the area, but became a place where MPs, titled ladies and gentlemen and high-ranking military men would meet for private lunches and dinners. Newspaper reports of the time record ‘meat and two veg for 2s. 6d in the downstairs caff, and scampi à la broche upstairs for 12s 6d.’

“Rich people with the Rolls-Royce would come,” Hatice remarked with a sparkle in her eyes.

Now with storage in the basement, the café, and fine dining upstairs, all three floors were earning money and Joseph felt it was time to move up in the world so ventured out to the West End with L’Hirondelle, a very swish place off Regent Street where he would bring the world’s best belly dancers to perform with the best Turkish musicians at exotic dinner shows. The clientele here was high society and with his charm, and knowing what his customers wanted, Joseph was able to make this one of the most popular venues in town.

With his desire to always improve and better himself and his family, Joseph was working in the café, the luncheon club and L’Hirondelle, but this did not stop him acquiring the Staple Inn at Holborn which he also made a success of. Alas, after a few good years The Windmill Café came under a Compulsory Purchase Order and the family business had to sell up and move on.

The L’Hirondelle was making money so Joseph took over an old Victorian Turkish Baths in the City, a small, elaborately designed building, but with extensive space below ground. Here on January 25th 1967, after much refurbishment, he opened Gallipoli, which is probably the restaurant he is most famous for. In the Gallipoli he entertained Onassis, Lord Mayors, Ambassadors and The Krays, who

sometimes stepped out of their Bethnal Green comfort zone to enjoy belly dancers and good Turkish food. Virginia Wade celebrated in Gallipoli; James Hunt was a regular - Joseph was at the top of his game and everything was good in his world. In Gallipoli he could utilise all the skills he had learnt in his small Bermondsey place but magnified one thousand times. Talking to Hatice about these times, I asked if he ever had time for holidays. Her eyes lit up. “Yes! Everything first class,” she cried with girlish delight. “All our furniture was the best, everything we had was the best,” she added with a wave of her hand around the room we sat in – her home for over 50 years. There was something very special about listening to her. I could see the years float away as she remembered those wonderful times, and I could see how proud she was of her late husband and what they had achieved together.

The Mourats had by now moved to Bromley, and one evening in 1964 while out dining in the Bickley Manor Country Club Joseph heard it was up for sale so bought it for a mere £32,000.

Hatice tells me that they had to spend a lot of money on this 1830s building to make the rooms en suite but when the work was done they had a country club to be proud of. It had one of the very first squash courts in the country, a lido, boasted private cottages on the land and became a go-to place in the 70s and 80s - dinner had to be booked weeks in advance.

Joseph, through his extensive customer base, had garnered some powerful and influential friends. He became a member of the Worshipful Company of Loriners and mixed with royalty through them; he had his daughter’s wedding photo in the Daily Mail and Evening Standard; he had a float in the Lord Mayor’s Show; he was sketched by Jak, the Evening Standard’s political cartoonist; he had the World Belly Dancing Championship in Gallipoli and offered up £10 for every minute over the world record that the famous Soraya danced, finally giving her £5000, all in full view of the media. He knew the power of advertising and made sure he took up every photo opportunity, so when he noticed an abandoned car dumped outside his new hotel he towed it to Downing Street - with the press in tow - to protest against Bromley Council for not removing it. He knew that was the best way to get Bickley Manor in the papers, and it worked.

But just as they were reaping the rewards of their country club another piece of bad luck befell Joseph when developers wanted to buy Gallipoli out to build new office buildings. He did not want to go without a fight after building the successful restaurant up from nothing and knew that his land was important to them, so when they offered him £1m he declined, saying he wanted £4m. The developers, however, merely changed their plans and built around him. Now a listed building, it is one of the most quirkiest places in London.

The whole debacle went on for some time, taking its toll on Joseph, his family and his friends; his son-in-law Şinasi says he was never the same again.

Joseph’s two sons ran Bickley Manor with their father until his death in 2001, and it seemed the heart went out of the business when he died, and in recent years has been the target of developers who have been offering silly money for the properties and seven acres.

It was at Bickley Manor where I met Hatice Mourat, her daughter Leyla who was once kept under the counter of the Windmill Café - and Leyla’s husband Şinasi Şevket. Between them they brought me up to date on how the family had been running the hotel since it was purchased so many years ago by the man who made his money in Bermondsey Street with his posh luncheon club above a workman’s café.

The sons had felt it time to sell up to the developers but the two daughters had other ideas. Hence, Bermondsey Girl Leyla and Şinasi, have come out of retirement, and with younger sister Sezan they have bought out one of the brothers. Now, with new ideas, new staff and a big makeover taking place they will bring Bickley Manor Hotel & Restaurant back to its former glory, just as their father would have had it.

And Mum, whose inheritance bought that first business in Bermondsey Street nearly seventy years ago, will remain on site in the cottage she has lived in for 50 years. www.bickleymanor.co.uk

I HAVE driven passed a nicely lit shop front in Camberwell for years. The sign says Pasha but means nothing to me. Tonight I was invited inside to find that it is actually a hotel with a top of the range spa and a huge restaurant decorated like you could be somewhere, anywhere deep in Central Asia, writes Michael Holland...

Jim and I were shown to a low table where we sat around on soft cushions like, er, Pasha (Turkish officers of high rank) while our host for the evening talked us through the restaurant’s ethos of providing the experience of ‘delicious dishes and exotic ambience of Central Asia, combined with flavours from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Russia and Turkey’. So, not being up to speed on any of those except, perhaps, Turkish, we let Team Pasha decide for us, knowing that we would then be tasting the best of many worlds and what the chef wanted us to try from his repertoire.

But first we were given samples of two very full-bodied red wines from Georgia, both excellent but we chose the Kindzmarouli for the black cherry notes that bounced through each sip.

We clinked our glasses, said ‘Cheers’ and sunk back into a myriad of cushions.

Relaxing there like kings from a former time it wasn’t long before the numerous courses began arriving with an explanation of each one.

The first was a dish that is handed out to all diners as a complimentary starter - Borsok - comprising of deep fried bread with a double cream dip.

The breads had the texture and taste of good doughnuts but without the jam in the middle and any sweetness in the pastry was balanced with the cream. They were quite moreish so

we knew not to overload on them, although Jim had a good go…

Next came Yogurtlu Kizartma, a nicely cooked selection of Aubergine, Courgette, Peppers and Potatoes with Yogurt and a Spiced Tomato Sauce, along with Hachapuri, (pastry baked with cheese) which were exceptionally tasty in a pizza-ish way, and Olivier, which was similar to a potato salad but with pieces of boiled beef. All three were extremely good and served the Georgian wine well.

A young man sang songs with an Asian flavour, accompanied by a multitude of instruments and backing singers provided by an iPad that gave the effect of a full orchestra replete with balalaikas and pan pipes.

A table of twenty young women took selfies between their starters and main courses while we discussed our next drink, deciding on Russian beers.

We shared a Baltika, a light lager-type ale, and a Stariy Melnik, both good beers coming in at just over 5% ABV. But before we could toast our good

fortune another course came: Samsi, a Baked Beef Pastry that was a mix of samosa and pasty, and a Manty, which was the same filling but in a light dumpling, and both very good with chilli, yogurt and tomato sauce accompaniments.

Feeling very nice laying back amongst the cushions as the tipsiness of the alcohol kicked in and with warm, almost full stomachs, I thought how life is good right now, when the door flew open and in came a belly dancer with flowing, shimmering chiffon trailing in her wake who proceeded to entertain us with quivering hips and alluring lips. She made a beeline for me and I shook as much as her belly when her navel quivered and danced just inches from my eyes! It was at that moment I realised that dumplings had aphrodisiacal qualities…

It was not long before she had all the women up following her moves, and a few of the men trying to shimmy and shake as best as they could. The

chef, seeing a break in proceedings, ventured out from the open kitchen to introduce himself to us, which was a very nice gesture.

With such a treat for the eyes before us our appetites rose just in time for the main course of Lamb Shashlik, marinated chunks of meat cooked on skewers and Plov, a rice dish with lamb, spices, carrot, onion and salad that the chef told us was traditional in Uzbekistan. And Plov was probably my favourite of the evening, though there was very little between any of them. Jimmy said he didn’t have a favourite but that he wasn’t too keen on the creamy dip with the fried bread, even though he mullered almost all of it!

After a real feast, and the music and dancing in full swing, it felt good reclining amongst so many soft cushions. A warmness set over me and as the celebrations continued I felt like I was on a magic carpet ride.

I was woken from my daydream when our host convinced us to try some traditional desserts.

So, only in the interests of journalistic professionalism did I succumb to his tempting talk of Baklava and Chak-Chak.

These were two rich Middle-Eastern delights that completed an evening of great traditional food and entertainment. Chak-Chak was a light pastry with honey, almonds and raisins; the Baklava a pistachio and honey filled pastry.

As we stepped outside from the Asian excitement of Pasha, smiling and happy with the taste of the desserts still lingering on the palate, we were a little shocked to find that we were still in cold, damp Camberwell. Pasha had created a different, exotic world for us even if just for a few hours.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that, to enable Fulcrum to lay a new gas service, it made an order, the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

The alternative route for diverted vehicles will be via, Stoney Street, Park Street, Redcross Way, Union Street, Borough High Street, Southwark Street, Bedale Street as applicable.

Dulwich storm through to Winchester clash

DULWICH HAMLET are through to the next round of the Buildbase FA Trophy after trouncing Chesham United 4-0 at the weekend.

Boss Gavin Rose switched to 3-5-2 for the fixture, with Mark Weatherstone, Matt Drage and Michael Chambers playing in the centre of defence and Nyren Clunis and Nathan Green the

wing-backs.

Gavin Tomlin was prominent early on and saw a shot that Chesham goalkeeper Ashlee Jones spilled cleared off the line.

The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute, Green firing home Clunis’ cross from the right.

Dulwich continued to press before the break, with Vas Karagiannis and Dumebi Dumaka goiung close, before

Preston Edwards pulled off a superb point-blank save to prevent Chesham from levelling.

It took Dulwich just two minutes of the second half to extend their lead when Dumaka eventually finished after Jones had kept out Karagiannis’ initial shot.

Karagiannis made it 3-0 in the 69th minute when he received the ball on the right and cut inside to strike a left-footed

shot beyond Jones into the far corner.

And Dulwich completed the rout in injury-time after Jones was harshly penalised for handling a back-pass. The freekick was played short to Ashley Carew and when his shot fell to Clunis the defender stuck out his leg to divert the ball past Jones.

Dulwich will play Winchester City away in the next round on Saturday, November 26.

Charlie lays down the Law

CHARLIE WINCOTT became Lynn AC Boxing Club’s first national novice champion at the weekend.

Wincott, fighting in the Class A Under-71kg final, got the unanimous decision against Luke Law from Rose Hill ABC. His final win capped an intense period of four bouts in as many weeks in the 2016 Amateur Boxing Alliance Senior National Championships.

Lynn coach and club secretary Terry Pearson said: “I am so pleased for Charlie, he has worked so hard turning a losing record into a winning one and picking up a national title.

“He has been such a pleasure to train as he gives 100 per cent in everything he does and that is what has captured him this title.”

There was no luck, however, for Chris Brown in the Class A Under91kg final against St Alban ABC’s Jamie Smith.

Brown was beaten on points, and Pearson admitted his fighter hadn’t performed to his potential.

“This is an unfortunate loss for Chris and the club as we know Chris has so much in his locker,” Pearson said. “But he did not bring it to the ring on the day.

“He is a very popular member of the club with his peers and coaches alike, and myself and the other coaches will be working with Chris on where we went wrong in this bout so it can be put right in the future.”

DULWICH HAMLET have announced another ‘Pay what you like’ fixture, with proceeds to be donated to charity.

Football Beyond Borders and the Dog Kennell Hill Adventure Playground will be the beneficiaries of cash received at the turnstiles, after match-day costs have been covered at their Ryman League Premier Division fixture at home to Worthing this Saturday (November 19).

George Parnavelas, part of the club committee community team, said: “It promises to be a great day, and the beauty is it doesn’t matter if you donate over the odds, or just a penny. It’s attractive to all, rich or poor, and it will hopefully encourage a few more Worthing fans to travel up on the day too.”

The game will kick off at Champion Hill at 3pm.

Docklands’ Evolution stalls

DOCKLANDS Under-15s suffered a 4-2 home defeat against a physical Evolution side last weekend.

Docklands started well and took the lead through Conor Buxton’s superb lob from 30 yards after good work by the impressive Josh Hyam.

However, they conceded three goals before the break to give themselves a difficult task in the second half.

Docklands upped the pressure searching for a way back into the game, but were caught napping as they conceded a fourth.

The Rotherhithe/Bermondsey side didn’t give up, though, and after Teddy Belcher was fouled in the box Hag Jobartheh grabbed a consolation from the penalty spot.

Docklands Under-7 side had a weekend off.

With twelve defeats in Abbott’s previous nineteen games in charge, Fisher fell 2-0 behind inside the first 26 minutes, but fought back through goals from former QPR striker Trey Williams and Isa Hussein, with his first of two brilliant free-kicks, to go in level at the break.

Sheppey United went in front again before Hussein found the top corner from 25 yards. But the away side found a late winner when Dan Bradshaw completed his hat-trick to condemn Fisher to a fifth straight defeat.

“It is a very tough job and I don’t want to make excuses,” Abbott said. “I’ve even said to the chairman, ‘if you’re not happy with results, get rid of me, get rid of me’. If that’s what you feel is right for the club.

“I don’t think it is. I suppose any manager will say that. I just think clubs have got to have a bit of belief in someone and I really feel I’m the right person to do that.”

He added: “When we say something to players we want them to take it on the chin. There were words said to the ‘keeper and words said to other players and we were just talking about desire because I’m fed up about every game we’ve played when the opposition manager and players are saying to me ‘why are you down the bottom?’

“We’ve got good players and we play some good football. We’re averaging two-and-a-half goals a game and we’re bottom of the league. It’s good to hear that teams are saying that but it’s no good for me because we’re losing at the end of it.”

IT SURELY won’t always be this good for Harry Smith, but he couldn’t really have expected his first week in the Millwall team to be so sensational.

It wasn’t just his goal – his third in two senior starts – in the 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers, it was the way he was involved before that, how composed he was in possession and his vision to pick out players with his head or by showing how deft a touch he has for someone who is 6ft 5ins tall.

He demonstrated it first when he spotted Aiden O’Brien’s run in the inside-left channel in the fourteenth minute and precisely, with a flick with the outside of his right foot, lifted the ball into the attacker’s path.

Daniel Leabitter, caught out of position, fouled O’Brien and was, maybe harshly, sent off.

In the 68th minute Smith pulled to the back post to head Joe Martin’s cross down to Lee Gregory to fire home Millwall’s third of an afternoon when they had struggled for a long period to really put their ten-man opponents away.

Smith also had two efforts saved by Kelle Roos before, just as he had against Luton, he struck late to underline what an astute piece of business Millwall may have pulled off. The game was already won with two minutes left when the ball broke to Smith in the box and though he wasn’t entirely expecting it he

immediately composed himself to take a touch with his right foot and finish low pas Roos with his left.

The 21-year-old striker often subconsciously illustrates his desire to score by making a gesture of frustration if the ball doesn’t come his way, but with top-scorer Steve Morison injured that demonstrable hunger for goals bodes well for a Millwall side that has scored in 30 of their last 31 games in all competitions.

But then to focus it all on Smith would probably be unfair when there were other prominent contributions, even if the early sending-off was key to the shift in momentum.

O’Brien got the first, his fifth goal in nine appearances. He has this knack of knowing where the ball is going to fall in the penalty area, and it’s not the first time this season he has followed up a shot from Gregory to tap in the rebound. In the build-up Ben Thompson had superbly tempted Hiram Boateng to make a tackle, before darting away and crossing.

Rovers had had the better of the opening exchanges, with Matty Taylor coming close with an effort from the edge of the box before Thompson came to Millwall’s aid, clearing off the line to prevent the visitors going a goal up. Thompson is playing with stitches in an ear injury that is causing discomfort, but you wouldn’t have guessed it from the way he defined a committed approach before he went off in the 72nd minute.

Harris had put pressure on Gregory to help smooth Smith’s transition by taking the brunt of the physical punishment. After his nifty footwork that led to O’Brien’s goal, he showed his strength in the 64th minute to chest down David Worrall’s cross, hold off Mark McChrystal, and set up Shaun Williams for a drilled finish into the bottom corner.

Four minutes later Gregory got his seventh goal of the season when this time he took Smith’s header on his chest in front of McChrystal to lash a volley past Roos. It’s finishes like that that convinced Rotherham to launch numerous bids for him in the summer, and in this form the worry is that clubs higher up the food chain and with more financial muscle might come rapping on the January transfer window.

There were also moments of quality before Smith decorated the win with the fourth goal of the afternoon.

Martin, making his first league start since the defeat to Bolton last month, slid a pass to Fred Onyedinma down the left-hand side. Onyedinma, in such buoyant mood, skipped past Tom Lockyer and though Peter Hartley cleared the initial danger, midfielder Chris Lines shirked a 5050 tackle with Shaun Cummings, the ball landing at the feet of Smith who finished.

One doesn’t have to wonder what Harris would have thought of one of his own players pulling out of a challenge in such a way, and it would have been reassuring to see it was Cummings, making his first league

appearance since January, applying the pressure.

Millwall eventually eased to victory against a Rovers side that rarely threatened. Without Morison up front the Lions were forced to find a new way to win, and they added variations to their play not always visible this season. They were aided by how much more space they had to work in after Leadbitter’s red card, but the hope is that if they can sustain that confidence in possession, the absence of Morison won’t be as keenly felt.

And Smith has already made a strong statement to ease that fear.

WHEN KYRON Farrell made his first Millwall start at Luton last week, it brought to ten the number of players to come through the club’s academy or that were signed to underage teams to be given their senior debut by Neil Harris.

Harry Smith may have caught the eye with a double on his senior debut for a Football League side, but the presences of Farrell and Paul Rooney in the side was further evidence of the direction Millwall are determined to follow.

Considering others such as Harry Girling and Christian Mbulu have been in first-team match-day squads, and Ben Thompson, Fred Onyedinma and Sid Nelson made their debuts after coming through the academy before Harris took over, it’s safe to say Millwall are an entirely different place to where they were eighteen months ago.

Harris promised when he was appointed full-time manager that he would shift the club’s focus back to developing youth, and it was also a promise he had made to Farrell two years earlier when he re-joined the club after his playing career had ended and he began working with Millwall’s U21 side.

“The season before he took the job he was our manager,” Farrell said. “He was always saying if we were good enough we’d get into the senior squad. Now that’s he’s taken over he’s given us our chance.

“But we’re working hard to make sure

we deserve that chance. Thankfully he’ll give it to us.

“Just because players are young sometimes people underestimate them.

But, really, if you give them an opportunity then more than likely they’re going to take them.”

He was determined in the summer to break into the first team this season, and took on board advice from some senior players before the Kenilworth Road tie.

“Being told that I was starting of course there were going to be nerves there, but a few of the senior lads spoke to me and calmed me down,” Farrell said. “They

“I had a lot of chats with people in the club and outside the club in the summer and I set a target to get in the first team in pre-season, but it didn’t work out, there were a few errors. But I upped my game and hopefully there will be many more.”

Farrell was playing district football when he was spotted by a Millwall scout, and since the age of thirteen his entire football development has taken place at the club.

He admits it was intimidating at the time, but he formed bonds with the likes of Thompson and Nelson, who are a year older, and uses them for inspiration and guidance as he looks forward to more first-team appearances.

He said: “When I first walked into the training ground I was quiet, didn’t say a word. I kept myself to myself.

Thankfully I made a lot of friends.

“It’s nice to see some of the lads I played with already get their chance, it’s a confidence-booster. If they’re just a year older than me and getting a chance then I could be in the same position.

“In training they don’t really say much until you do something wrong or don’t make the right decision. Then they’ll come and talk to you. Nothing aggressive but they’ll notice things. It’s not a case that they’re moaning, it’s them trying to pass on their experience because they’ve been doing it for a longer time.

“I’m just taking it one step at a time.

I’ve made my debut so my confidence is up. I’d like to be involved every week with the first team. Hopefully I get another two starts before Christmas.

“It was a really big thing to make my debut, but I try to keep calm about it and remind myself that this is sort of a reward for my hard work. It’s the first of many as far as I see it.”

BAD LUCK FOR JAMIE

JAMIE PHILPOT is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury in Millwall U23s’ 1-1 draw with Cardiff on Monday.

Philpot, whose loan move to National Bromley was due to end this Thursday, scored the Lions’ opener before hobbling off in the second half.

His senior manager Neil Harris said: “Jamie’s one of the young lads that when they go on loan they can still play for us. He didn’t start for Bromley at the weekend so it was vital he got minutes for us on Monday.

“It looks like now he’s going to be out for a period of time with ankle damage.”

JOE MARTIN refutes the idea being out of the team increases a player’s motivation – because he believes “hunger” should always be a driving factor.

Martin made his first league start in a month and was involved in two goals as Millwall defeated Bristol Rovers 4-0 last weekend.

That was Millwall’s seventh win in eight games in all competitions, and Martin insisted that there was always the feeling that they would turn their form around given the ethic that exists in the squad.

He said: “The hunger of players should never really change.

“Even when we were losing we knew we shouldn’t be losing those types of games. We knew it was going to turn around, it was just a matter of when.

“But when you’re losing games you do think a bit, ‘what can we do?’ You know you just have to keep doing what you’re doing.

“Not even that you have to work harder, because we do that anyway. It was going to come right because our squad is pretty good for this league.

“Like last season we got a win in one of the cup games and we kicked on from there. It’s about building some momentum, that’s a massive thing throughout the season.

“But if you could find the key to what that is you’d be a wealthy man, you’d be the best manager in the world. I suppose once you have a formula it’s about trying to stick to it.

“It’s difficult to put your finger on what momentum is, but when you’re playing you can feel it, you know you’re going to win games. Things start going for you.

“It’s the same for teams at the bottom of the league, little things happen during games that go against you. When we were losing those games that was what was happening.

“We’ve been on a good run and things have been going for us recently.”

Millwall will be trying to extend their winning run to six games when they face Bolton, who lost 1-0 at Peterborough last weekend after five league wins in a row when they conceded just one goal.

That sequence included the 2-0

win at The Den last month, when former Lions centre-back Mark Beevers helped keep Millwall scoreless for the first time in 26 games.

Millwall had just beaten Northampton after four straight league defeats, but hadn’t won at The Den in League One since August.

“When we played them the last time I think it came a little too early for us,” Martin said. “We’d started to turn things around but it was maybe a couple of weeks before we would have wanted to face them.

“They’re a good side, they’re not going to lose many and they’re not going to be losing more than oneor two-nil if they do lose. They’re a really solid side.

“At any time of the season they’re a difficult team to face whether they’re on a good or bad run. For us we feel we’re equally as strong as them.

“It’ll be a tough game, I don’t think there will be many goals in it.

Four-nil would do again but we’d take one-nil.”

It was Martin’s cross to Harry Smith that set up Millwall’s third goal against Bristol Rovers, when

the young striker headed to Lee Gregory who fired home a volleyed finish.

Martin praised the impact Smith has made in his first two senior games for the club, but he was careful not to build him up too much ahead of this weekend.

“That’s one of his strengths, he’s massive and he did well to nod the ball down to Gregs,” Martin said.

“He had a really good game. And he did the same against Luton as well.

“He’s definitely got ability and he’s a good find for Millwall for the future.

“It took him a few weeks to settle in, I think he’d say that as well. The biggest thing when people come in is confidence, especially with young players. If they show confidence they’ve got a chance.

“He’s done that and it’s good for him that he’s got a couple of goals and he can build on that.

“It’s the battle of the giants, it’ll be a good one. Beevers is obviously a good player, he’s solid and is certainly not a weakness in anyone’s team.

“We’ll have things we’ll try to exploit. We have to be solid and play our own game.”

MILLWALL WILL have the chance to avenge the 2-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at The Den in October when they travel to the Reebok Stadium this weekend.

That game is the only one of their last eight the Lions have failed to win as they progressed to the next rounds in the Checkatrade Trophy and the FA Cup and rose to ninth place in League One. That’s all a far cry from the mood in early October which had plunged along with their league position after a 2-1 defeat at Walsall, their sixth game without a win, left Neil Harris’ side outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Bolton had won five successive league games until their 1-0 defeat at Peterborough last weekend.

Phil Parkinson, who won manager of the month for October, struggled to explain a result that was made worse when goalkeeper Mark Howard picked up a thumb injury that has ruled him out for three months. Ben Alnwick, who was in goal for Peterborough when they defeated Millwall 5-1 in August, could deputise.

Sammy Ameobi, who scored Bolton’s first goal in that 2-0 win a month ago, is a doubt and will be assessed before kick-off.

The news that Millwall striker Steve Morison is set to miss five weeks with a knee injury was softened somewhat

by Harry Smith’s impact last week.

He followed up two goals on his debut against Luton with another in the 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers, his first two games at senior level in the Football League.

Bolton’s solid defence has been built on the partnership of former Millwall centre-back Mark Beevers and David Wheater. Bolton have the best defence in the division, having conceded just twelve times in seventeen games.

NEIL HARRIS hasn’t decided if he will pit Harry Smith against the best defence in League One this weekend.

Smith has made a sensational start to his senior Lions career with three goals and an assist in his first three senior games.

Former Millwall player Mark Beevers and central defensive partner David Wheater were imperious when the sides met last month, when Wheater scored the second goal in a 20 win.

strong but relatively slow defenders.

That could mean Smith stepping aside with Fred Onyedinma or Aiden O’Brien partnering Lee Gregory up front and David Worrall, whom Harris praised for his performance last weekend, coming into the side.

Shane Ferguson, Jimmy Abdou and Kris Twardek all return from international duty on Thursday, but just as Millwall’s injury problems had cleared up the curse struck again.

Shaun Hutchinson is a major doubt with a hamstring problem.

Ben Thompson still hasn’t recovered fully from the ear injury he picked up in the FA Cup tie against Southend,

but Harris said that is unlikely to keep him out despite taking his midfielder off against Bristol Rovers.

“I was delighted Ben got 70 minutes at the weekend,” Harris said. “We’ve also got the option to put Calum Butcher on, he’s progressing for us nicely. Ben’s had a little bit of lack of training at the moment because of the damage to his ear, but he’ll always want to play on a Saturday.”

Mahlon Romeo will be available as he hasn’t joined up with the Antigua and Barbuda squad for their friendly against Estonia on Monday, and Shaun Cummings got through another outing with the U23s this

With Steve Morison out injured, Smith has been promoted to the first team much sooner than the club had anticipated, but Harris will consider his attacking options against the Trotters.

“I think that’s the big question,” Harris said when asked if Smith would start. “I wanted to play him against Luton but my hand was also forced because we didn’t have many options.

“And then you debate if you play

him against Bristol Rovers, against tough opposition. We let him get out and play and he did well again.

“Bolton, with all due respect to the other clubs, are another level with Beevers and Wheater.

“Without Steve, Harry gives us the option of having a bigger player up front. Or you go a slightly different route with two slightly more technical players and a bit more pace.

“That’s the thought process looking into Saturday’s game.

“Harry has announced himself in the first team and he won’t have many

week.

Millwall haven’t beaten Bolton in six games, since Darius Henderson scored in the last minute to give Kenny Jackett’s side a 2-1 win in the Championship in October 2012.

The Lions haven’t won at Bolton since a League Cup victory more than 43 years ago, on November 6, 1973, a month after their last league victory at the home of the Trotters, which was then Burnden Park.

Bolton are also the only side Millwall have failed to score against in their last 31 games in all competitions.

Millwall, though, have hit the back

of the net twelve times in five games since that October defeat.

Millwall boss not in a Harry to rush striker better weeks in his professional career than he’s had this week.

“But it’s about sustaining that and when the bubble bursts slightly, and there has to be a time – we have to remember his age and his vulnerability at this level – it’s about trying to keep to standards.

“That will be the message to him over the coming weeks whether he’s in the team or on the bench. Standards have always got to be there on the pitch and off the pitch.

“We have to keep trying to improve him and make him a better player.”

NEIL HARRIS has confirmed he will add to his Millwall squad during January’s transfer window.

The Lions boss also said players will leave the club, either on loan or on permanent deals.

Harris has signed six players so far this season, but recent injuries to key players Shaun Hutchinson and Steve Morison have reinforced the feeling new recruits are needed to bolster the squad.

Millwall have recovered from a poor spell in September to mount a push for the top six in League One, and Harris wants to ensure he has the resources available to challenge for promotion in the second half of the season.

“I think we’ll certainly be looking at a couple of players going out and a couple of players coming in,” Harris said.

“That’s not for any other reason than you do need a freshness, you do need fresh impetus. There are players in the squad that won’t have played as much as they’d have liked to and will want to go and play football somewhere.

“At the moment it’s too early to say

if it’ll be loan players or permanent transfers both ways. We’re always looking for players that can add quality to the squad, add competition for places.

“But we have to balance that with some really promising young players coming through.

“I think we might be the only team in the division, if not most of the divisions, without any loan players.

So the thought process there is we might need one or two.

“It’s been a good learning curve the last few months. There have been times when I thought we were a little bit short of competition for places and that’s mainly come down to bad luck

“There was also a lack of form with some players, that’s the worry and that’s always the worry.

“We’re not always used to having those periods. We didn’t really have them in the second half of last season, but we’ve had it at the start of this season.

“We’ll certainly look at adjusting that in January. But I’m not one for stacking players, I want people to have an opportunity.

“We’ll be in the second half of the season and we have to make sure that we’re in a good position to push for that top six. We need to have the squad to do that.”

Hutchinson is likely to miss this weekend’s League One clash with Bolton Wanderers after pulling up with a hamstring problem late on in the Checkatrade Trophy win at Luton last week.

Hutchinson has yet to start a league game for the Lions, but looked impressive against Southend in the FA Cup before his setback at Kenilworth Road.

Millwall manager Neil Harris also gave an update on Steve Morison’s knee injury that is expected to keep him out until a potential return in the League One game at home to Shrewsbury on December 10.

“It might be a course of injections, we’ll have to see how his recovery comes along,” Harris said. “He’s spending a period of time in a brace to stabilise the area, and limited time out of it to do some controlled walking.

“It’s always difficult because people recover differently from injuries and you don’t get a true sense of the recovery until it’s two to three weeks in.

“We’re working on the basis it’s a five-week period from the day of the injury.

“We don’t know yet with Hutch, we’ll have to see how his recovery goes. Obviously we have to be careful with him, he’s aggravated an old injury because of scar tissue in the hamstring.

“We certainly can’t rush him but we also want him back on the training pitch as soon as possible.”
