The Nunhead woman was carrying her dog Smoky in her arms while walking along the street when four teenage boys approached her and seized him.

Giving Feminist Library six more months was right thing to do

T

he News welcomes Southwark Council’s decision to grant the Feminist Library six more months at their current Westminster Bridge Home, following a protest over new rent demands.

The council is asking for rent for the first time in seven years - something the library says will put its future as the prime source of feminist literature in Britain into doubt.

Given the harsh government cuts to local spending, it is completely understandable that the council cannot afford to offer prime locations rent-free to organisations, no matter how worthy.

However, it is good news that some understanding has now been shown, which will allow the library to spend the next six months sourcing a new location - rather than being unceremoniously turfed out on March 1, as was originally planned.

Equally admirable was the council’s decision to decline the library’s offer of £500 per month rent during this interim period, instead suggesting the money should go towards the employment of someone who could help find a new home for the library – which will hopefully be somewhere in the borough.

What makes Dulwich Hamlet more than just a club

H

UNDREDS OF people watched Dulwich Hamlet Football Club play a charity friendly against an Assyrian team last week – another example of what makes the pink and blues, to coin the Barcelona motto, more than just a club.

The fans raised thousands for the Southwark Refugee Project and the British Red Cross Syria Appeal, with all proceeds from the match against north London-based FC Assyria going to a great cause.

Hamlet fans are often mocked on social media and the press for their ‘hipster’ reputation, a lazy tag based on the craft ale in the club bar and the colourful fans in the terrace.

But what makes Hamlet stand out is the efforts of its fans to make things better, both in the local community and across the footballing and non-footballing world. The club’s community spokesperson, Mishi Morath, told the News that “it’s about doing the right thing.”

When it comes to fundraisers like the Assyria game and last season’s groundbreaking anti-homophobia friendly against Britain’s first gay team, we couldn’t agree more.

Bring joy back to Bermondsey!

Campaign launched to recreate giant slide originally built in the 1920s

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to build a new ‘Joy Slide’ in Bermondsey, decades after the much-loved original in the churchyard of St James and St Anne was torn down.

The old wooden slide, which was built in 1921 and brought delight to generations of Bermondsey children, was donated by Arthur Carr,

chairman of Peak Freans.

A newspaper report at the time told of kids speeding down the slide “at well over the speed limit”, filling the air with the sounds of “uncontrolled delight.”

It reads: “For today in the shadow of St. James’s Church, nay, in the very consecrated ground of the churchyard itself, you will find the nucleus of a real live fun-city, a wonderful joy-slide, with the youngsters of Jamaica Road shooting

down on it on their doormats at well over the speed limit, and shrieking and yelling with uncontrolled delight.”

The enthralled journalist deemed the slide “the brightest thing in all Bermondsey”, adding that it “ought to do the local trousers trade a power of good.”

The campaign has been launched by the Friends of St James Churchyard, organised by Southwark Lib Dem leader Anood Al-Samerai.

She said: “It’s still early days and there will be lots of funding to find, but I have no doubt that the whole community will get behind making this exciting project happen.”

The fire was damaged by fire in the 1980s and eventually torn down, to be replaced by a modern playground.

However, those with long enough memories still reminisce about the old joy slide and dream of a replacement.

Canon Gary Jenkins, of St James

and St Anne Church, told the News: “We’d like to get it back. Lots of people remember. Lots of people have memories about it so we’d love to make it happen.”

He added: “I find that hardly a funeral visit goes by without someone from the family reminiscing about the glory days of Bermondsey’s Joy Slide.”

Woman’s one-year-old Chihuahua knocked from her hands by gang and savaged by dog

THE FEMINIST Library has been granted a six month stay of execution by Southwark Council, after thousands of people signed a protest petition as the library was asked for rent for the first time in seven years.

Speaking at Southwark Cabinet meeting on March 15, the council’s finance boss Fiona Colley said that the library’s current Westminster Bridge Road home is not the “solution long term” but granted the group an extension

SOUTHWARK: Police have circulated a warning to mobile phone users after an increase of robberies in the north of the borough.

The notice, which was issued by Grange ward’s safer neighbourhood team, warns of a “significant rise” of moped-riding thieves snatching phones.

The crooks even mount pavements on their bikes, according to the police, riding up behind victims before making a speedy getaway.

The police urged residents: “Stay alert to your surroundings. Don’t get lost in the phone. Keep calls brief as possible. Don’t advertise your phone when not using.”

PECKHAM: University College London MA students and Peckham Vision will host a discussion about proposed developments.

The meeting will take place between 12pm and 2pm on Saturday at Peckham Library Square.

A Met Police spokesman confirmed that they were called at about 7.15pm on Monday, following reports of a

A petition, signed by over 15,000 people, had been handed to the council last month, calling for the “rent increase” to be dropped. However, the council later revealed that the library had not paid any rent, only contributing a service charge.

Fiona Colley, Southwark Council cabinet member for Finance, Performance and Modernisation, explained last month: “Whilst we recognise and appreciate the work that’s been done by the Library, we have a very clear duty to ensure our assets are being

managed responsibly, and that we are being fair to other tenants who are paying open market rent.

“I have personally offered to meet with them to discuss the situation and try to find a way forward that meets both our needs, but at a time when the council’s funding from government is being cut by £47m we are simply unable to continue to subsidise their rent.”

The council is now asking the library for an annual market rent of £18,000 along with its £12,000 annual service charge. It has been given a six month deadline to respond to these requirements.

A YOUNG woman has told of her horror after watching a Bull Terrier maul her tiny Chihuahua to death.

The 21-year-old Nunhead woman was carrying her dog Smoky in her arms while walking along Carden Road at 7.15pm on Monday when four teenaged boys approached her.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said the boys seized Smoky from her arms, and threw the oneyear-old puppy on the floor, before setting the “sandy-coloured” bull terrier on him.

Barely speaking through her tears as she spoke to the News, the woman said: “I was walking near my nan’s house. I walked Smoky every day. He was my baby.

“He was my only dog and he was lovely and friendly.

“But there was nothing I could do.

They broke his neck and they murdered him. I picked Smoky up and ran back to my mum’s house.”

She said she had never seen any of the boys before but described them as all between fourteen and eighteen years old and black, with dark clothing.

She recalls the boys telling her to give Smoky to them, and trying to snatch Smoky from her after she refused. She then remembers them “just laughing” before disappearing up Carden Road.

“There was a woman on the other side of the road who saw the whole thing, but she didn’t say or do anything,” the traumatised woman said. “I just ran to my nan’s house with Smoky and broke down. We

Dog chipping fines to be introduced SOUTHWARK: Residents will face a £500 fine next month if they do not chip their dogs following the introduction of a new government policy.

A DARING base-jumper leapt from the Shard on Saturday morning before releasing a parachute and landing calmly on St Thomas Street.

Stunned onlookers snapped photos as the daredevil dodged traffic and landed beside the iconic building, before making a hasty escape with an accomplice.

western Europe and has been a popular spot for base jumpers since it was constructed. In 2012, while the building was still being built, an Essex roofer jumped from the building four times.

A Scotland Yard spokesman confirmed that officers were called to the area at 10.18am to reports of someone jumping from the building. No arrests were made.

A spokeswoman for the Shard said: “We can confirm that we are investigating an incident involving a member of the public this morning.”

Cameron makes surprise visit to academy

HUNDREDS OF screaming Bermondsey schoolgirls mobbed David Cameron on Monday when he made a surprise appearance at Harris Academy in Southwark Park Road.

The Prime Minister was meeting students involved in the school’s mentor programme, before stepping outside for a breather during the midmorning break.

Hundreds of stunned pupils rushed to take selfies and talk with Mr Cameron, who could hardly be seen in the mass of pupils as ‘Cam-mania’ took hold.

The school’s mentoring programme sees high-flying business professionals matched one-on-one with pupils as they prepare for their GCSE exams.

Following the visit, a government spokesperson commented on the continued need for secondary school places available in Southwark.

They said: “We are creating an education system in which all children, regardless of their birth or background, can thrive. We are investing billions of pounds into providing additional school places across Britain with almost half a million more places under this Government – at the same time as protecting the schools budget.

“And in Southwark there are 4,022 more school places and 15,291 more children at good or outstanding schools compared to 2010.

“But of course there is more to do.

And that’s why over the past six years, we’ve opened twelve academies and six free schools in Southwark and across the nation we

are investing an additional £23 billion up to 2021 in school buildings, creating 600,000 new school places, 500 new schools and carrying out essential maintenance.”

Family ‘in disbelief’ as inquest hears about ‘extremely rare’ reaction to drugs

THE MOURNING family of a young mum are in disbelief at a coroner’s verdict that her “drug related” death has been recorded as the first ever case of its kind in the UK.

Terrilee Sanderson of Peckham was 24 years-old when she went to bed on Sunday, August 30 and never woke up, leaving behind her now two-year-old son Oliver.

Her death came after a girls’ night out in a Shoreditch nightclub on Saturday, August 29, where she had taken what she believed was MDMA – a powdered form of ecstasy – and cannabis.

Terrilee was discovered in bed at her Aylesbury Estate flat after her cousin Aaron Wikoff knocked on her door at 4pm on the Monday morning.

Terrilee’s mum, Pam Clowsley also rang her daughter that morning, and said she “knew something was wrong” when Terrilee didn’t pick up the phone.

The “caring, happy and bubbly” young Terrilee, who loved music, dancing and pie and mash, was taken to St Thomas’ Hospital and it wasn’t for five days before Pam was given permission to see her daughter’s body.

Initial evidence following her death had

shown a build-up of fluid in one of her lungs. Her family were also suspicious that her complaints of a chest infection in the weeks prior could have suggested there was more to Terrilee’s death than recreational drug use.

A hearing into the cause of Terrilee’s death on March 10 concluded that her death had been caused by her consumption of drugs, but the details of the case left her family “disappointed”

and unconvinced.

The senior coroner Andrew Harris concluded, after hearing detailed evidence from a pathologist and toxicologist, that Terrilee had unknowingly taken a version of ecstasy containing a different psychoactive chemical called “ethylone”.

Diocese to hold hearing over grave plans

THE DIOCESE of Southwark will hold a special hearing to decide whether the council can continue to “mound over” acres of Camberwell Old Cemetery for new graves.

A date for the hearing has yet to be confirmed in June or July, but it follows months of opposition from the Save Southwark Woods campaign (SSW).

Over eight-hundred residents have also made objections to the diocese SSW accuse the council of wanting to re-landscape twelve acres of consecrated forest, where “tens of thousands” of bodies are buried.

Two acres of woods in “Area-Z” has already been “stripped to bear earth” without the diocese’ permission, and now “looks like a ploughed field” said SSW’s Blanche Cameron. She said: “This is urban deforestation in an age when we knew how important woods and trees are

The combination of the drugs, Dr Marnerides said, gave the “extremely rare” result of causing her to “either suffer a cardiac arrest or for her heart to fail” during her sleep the following day.

Working with toxicologist, Dr Paterson, the GP referred to the only two related deaths they could find in their research, both involving a fatal outcome of revellers accidentally mixing MDEA and cannabis in the American city of San Diego.

His analysis found 0.04 milligrams of “ethylone” in Terrilee’s blood and 2.2 milligrams of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. A “very similar” combination of the drugs were found in one of the San Diego cases that doctors Paterson and Marnerides were referring to.

Based on the evidence from Dr Marnerides, and from Terrilee’s loved ones about her health and behaviour before her death, Mr Harris concluded that “on the balance of probability” Terrilee had “died of heart failure” as a result of the drugs she took. But whether the combination of the drugs, or just one, had caused a cardiac arrest, or a respiratory arrest remains unknown.

Terrilee’s funeral was held on October 27 at Camberwell New Cemetery Chapel, which saw her body transported there from her mum’s house in a horsedrawn carriage.

Shokrulla Farhad Ahmadzada, director of Camberwell Foods Limited, pleaded guilty to offences under the Children and Young Persons Act 1933 at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court on March 8.

The store, which operates as Food City in 40 Denmark Hill, had sold cigarettes to an underage person without asking for ID last October.

Mr Ahmadzada had been previously cautioned for a similar offence in June

2014 when cigarettes were sold to a fourteen-year-old.

Most smokers take up smoking before the age of eighteen, and once started it is very difficult to quit.

“The council views its enforcement responsibilities on underage sales as a priority.

“Retailers must carry out the appropriate ID checks before they sell. We help them comply by offering free training and providing free proof of age cards locally. However, where retailers fail to sell responsibly we will take appropriate legal action”.

ELEPHANT AND Castle’s ‘guerrilla gardener’ is appearing in a national advertising campaign for the CoOperative Bank.

Richard Reynolds, 38, has been popping up on Britain’s televisions in a 30-second ad that was first aired on March 4 during a break for Coronation Street.

The ad features Richard’s past-time of “gardening without the council’s permission” in urban areas to “make the place look nicer”, which he has been blogging about since 2004.

The opening frames show him looking out across the Elephant and Castle roundabout from his flat in Perronet

House, where he says: “It looks pretty grim outside, but that to me is a blank canvas.”

Richard, who also works in advertising, told the News: “I had no idea it was even going to be on TV, let alone during the break for Coronation Street. I thought it would just go online. I suppose they chose the ad for that slot because they want the brand to reach every man and his dog.”

“I’m passionate about transforming scrappy patches of unloved land, and I’m passionate about the terrible changes that have been made to the roundabout.”

He has published a book on the guerrilla gardening movement ‘On Guerrilla Gardening’, and was made a ‘London Leader’ by Mayor Boris Johnson in 2010.

Former bishop’s blue plaque unveiled on Oscar winner’s house

THE LIFE of a former bishop of Woolwich has been commemorated with a Peckham Society Blue Plaque at his old home – which now belongs to Oscar-winner Jenny Beavan.

The plaque honours David Sheppard, who was also a passionate campaigner for civil rights and poverty relief, and was captain of the England cricket team.

It was unveiled on Monday at Ms Beavan’s house, the house where the reverend lived with his wife and daughter from 1969 and 1975.

Ms Beavan, who hosted the unveiling ceremony, earned both an Oscar and a BAFTA this year for her work on as costume designer for the Mad Max, Fury Road film.

She told the News: “I knew about David living here when I moved in, so I went to Southwark Cathedral one day and they had a book called Steps Along Hope Street which has a photo of this house in it.

“He sounded like the most wonderful man and I feel incredibly proud to have this place. It feels pretty cool to have the

modern past recognised on the front of my house.”

The Rt Rev Sheppard’s daughter Jenny Sheppard, 54, also attended the ceremony at her childhood home.

“I grew up here while my dad was bishop,” she said. “But I also came back to live here while I was studying for my second year at Goldsmiths University.

“So I basically ended up lodging in my old bedroom. Jenny has the piano and her desk in exactly the same place we used to, only her desk has BAFTAs and Oscars on it.”

The Rt Rev Sheppard left Peckham in 1975 and was made Bishop of Liverpool that same year, and he remains the only ordained minister to ever play Test

Cricket.

He died on March 5, 2005, the day before his 76th birthday, having announced in 2003 he was suffering from colorectal cancer.

His plaque was the third the Peckham Society have had made. The first was in 2012 to commemorate W H Blanche, the former overseer of Camberwell

Vestry for the poor, while the second was for lithographer and factory owner William Griggs.

Peckham Society chair, Peter Frost, 80, said: “We all agreed David was worthy of being the next Peckham man to get a plaque.

“He also wrote a book called Faith in the City. He strongly believed that church leaders had a duty to live among their own communities to understand them properly.

Fans raise thousands

HUNDREDS OF Dulwich Hamlet fans turned out in force last week for a special fundraising match against an Assyrian football team.

Dulwich took on FC Assyria on March 9, in their latest charity and awareness match after taking on Stonewall FC, Britain’s first gay football team, last year.

A total of 338 fans turned out, raising thousands of pounds for the Southwark Refugee Project and the British Red Cross Syria Appeal.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, who helped organise the match, said: “I was bowled over by the photo of Alan Kurdi, lying dead on the beach. I have a two-year-old son, so it knocked me for six.”

She praised the Dulwich fans who had turned out in such numbers on a cold Wednesday evening.

FRUSTRATED ROAD safety campaigners in Borough are still waiting for new road crossings – more than two years after Southwark Council Leader Peter John personally promised them ahead of the 2014 local elections.

Community groups SE1 Safer Roads and Borough Babies organised a campaign in 2013 which pushed for safer road crossing across Borough High Street - particularly along the main routes between the Rockingham and Tabard estates and the cluster of primary schools around Borough Station.

A petition put forward by the campaign group was signed by over 1,500 people, prompting Cllr John to declare in council assembly in January 2014: “Having spoken with them, Cllr Hargrove and I are pleased to give them a commitment that this authority will deliver those

crossings within the next twelve months.”

Two years down the line, campaigners are dismayed that these plans seem to have hit a red – or at least an amber – light.

Victoria Diamond, of SE1 Safer Roads, said: “At the moment you regularly see parents and children having to take their life in the hands where there is no pedestrian phase, scuttling out of the way of juggernaut lorries.

“We were delighted when the council leader Peter John gave us his personal promise in December 2013 that the council would install pedestrian crossings at both spots within twelve months - and made it an election pledge.

“Work now seems to be stalled, and lots of local parents are really disappointed. Road safety is a huge concern for lots of people and we really hope that this promise will be delivered.”

AN EXPENSIVE Swarovski dragonfly broach was among the jewellery stolen during a burglary in Sydenham earlier this year.

Police have released CCTV images showing two men they would like to talk to in connection with the January 14 raid, which also saw a jewellery box, pearl drop earrings and a necklace taken.

The burglary, which took place at around 5.40pm, is being linked with another attempted burglary at a nearby

property. The first suspect is described as a white male aged in his forties. He has untidy black hair with grey sides and stands at 5ft 7inches tall. He was wearing blue jeans, black jacket and black trainers.

The second suspect is described as a “chubby” male. He was wearing a dark coloured tracksuit with the hood up.

200-year-old kids to return to school ROTHERHITHE

RESTORED 200-year-old statues from an historic Rotherhithe school will be unveiled on Saturday.

The figures of two school children originally resided above the old Free School on St Marychurch Street but were removed in February to begin their regeneration.

Now restored through the work of conservator Brian Hall, the public have an opportunity to examine the figures up close at an event in Rotherhithe.

The Free School in Rotherhithe was established in 1613 by Robert Bell and the statues have now been restored to their traditional ‘bluecoats’, through the removal of 26 layers of paint.

First made in 1795, it is expected that the statues were painted every ten-twelve years for more than two centuries with various different colours emerging over time.

The figures had faded dramatically over the timespan with their original colours only revealed to conservators through painstaking effort in the past few weeks.

The finely carved figures, one boy and one girl, were originally believed to be made of coade stone but have actually been found to be made of the far more valuable Portland limestone.

Members of the public will be able to see the restored figures at The London Bubble Theatre Company in Elephant Lane, close to Rotherhithe station between 10am and 1pm.

Church to appeal Police offer safety tips in £7,740 noise fine hunt for serial attacker

A CAMBERWELL church has been fined over £7,500 for disturbing neighbours with loud sermons – including a weekly 3am ‘miracle’ service that claims to cure worshippers of illness.

Kingdom Church in Camberwell Station Road was brought to court by Southwark Council last month, after residents lodged “floods of complaints.”

However, Bishop Climate Wiseman told the News that the church was appealing the fine, as it had received no complaints since installing a new roof in an effort to reduce noise.

He said: “It is a big fine and we will be appealing against it. I do not deny that we made some noise - we did.

But we have spent nearly ten thousand pounds reducing the noise.

And I was out of the country so could not go to court.

“We are based is an industrial area.

But there are new flats and they complain. The flats were meant to be offices but they became houses.

The church runs a weekly 3am service, which occurs at that time, according to its website, because “is a well-known time that witchcraft and negative elements begin to work.”

It adds: “While the witches are busy working their witchcraft you are getting the wisdom of God concerning their demonic operations.”

The church was fined £7,740.50 fine at Camberwell Green Magistrates on February 22, after it was found guilty of two charges under Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1980.

Councillor Michael Situ, Southwark Council cabinet member for communities and safety, said: “We would have preferred to settle this matter out of court, but unfortunately our attempts to work with the church leaders were ignored.

“We hope the penalty helps to remind both the leaders, and the wider community, anti-social behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated and wrongdoers will be made to pay one way or another.”

POLICE HAVE issued a safety warning – and a £20,000 reward – following a series of ‘brutal’ attacks against women in Peckham.

Last December, two women were targeted in linked attacks in the area. The first took place on December 4 in Commercial Way between 1.15am and 2.15am, with the 31-year-old victim suffering a head injury.

The second took place in Hanover Park on December 13 between 6.15am and 6.45am. In this instance, the 30year-old victim was assaulted to the point of unconsciousness and was discovered lying in the street by a passerby.

The attacker ripped clothing off the victims in both attacks.

Another attack, thought to also be linked, took place the following month in Deptford. The attack, in Creekside/Deptford Church Street at 5am on New Year’s Day, left an eighteen-year-old with “serious assault injuries” to her head.

The linked incidents were highlighted on Crimewatch last week, with CCTV footage showing the vicious Hanover Park attack. Police warned viewers that

the attacks appear to be escalating in violence and provided safety tips for women in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Zena Marshall said: “Anyone watching it cannot fail to be shocked by its brutality, and therefore understand the need to catch the person responsible. I would urge anyone with any information on who the attacker may be, or anyone with any information about the attacks, to come forward and help our investigation.”

He added: “We are yet to identify the man seen on CCTV that we are keen to

speak to in connection with this investigation, so we are continuing to appeal for the public’s help to find out who he may be.”

A £20,000 reward will be given to someone who can provide information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person behind the attacks. BERMONDSEY: A three-car collision caused massive delays in the Tower Bridge Road area last week.

No one was injured in the March 10 crash but the road was sealed off, causing congestion on the Bricklayers Arms roundabout. The accident, which also damaged a traffic light, occurred at around 12.20pm.

Care home change

CAMBERWELL: A care home will soon be made home to disabled people rather than the elderly, after the charity running it decided to change its use.

The home for elderly men in Grosvenor Terrace, will be refurbished as a support centre for people with learning disabilities and autism. The building had been closed since beginning of March. But a spokesman for the care home’s managing body, the Brandon Trust, said: “The people that were living in our care home have now all moved on to live in their own flats in Southwark, with support tailored to meet their individual needs. ”

POLICE ARE appealing for help after a dog-walker was attacked and robbed by a group of men in Walworth.

The incident occurred at just after midnight on January 23, as the victim walked through Victory Place Park.

According to police, the 37-year-old man was robbed of his mobile phone after he was pushed and slapped by the group.

All of the suspects are described as black males, although the victim can only describe two of the attackers in detail. One is described as a chubby, curly-haired man with a goatee in his mid-20s. He was around 6ft 1ins in

Camberwell couple say their home is not suitable for son with Cerebral Palsy

A SEVERELY disabled man’s family say they are “close to the edge”, having waited years for Southwark Council to find their son a safe place to live.

Stefan David-Jones, 21, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, and gets around the twobedroom house using crutches, a wheelchair, or by linking arms with his parents.

Stefan has endured multiple brain surgeries to treat his hydrocephalus – a condition where a tube is fitted to drain fluid from his brain. He also has learning difficulties which prevent him from being able to read or write, and has a short attention span.

His mum and step-dad, Suzy and Joseph Bobowicz, say their one real wish is to find a slightly bigger, more disabledfriendly council house for Stefan than their home in Dylways, near Denmark Hill Station.

Instead they are “infuriated” by how the council has treated them, and by what they claim is a continuing failure to “provide safe and adequate housing” for Stefan. Despite backing from Stefan’s nurses, his social worker, and even a council housing officer, they remain “trapped” in the home they never wanted.

Joseph, 48, told the News: “We have had endless problems with this house.

For one thing the corridors are too narrow. Stefan isn’t a very big lad, but because he needs his wheelchair on his worse days, it’s incredibly difficult for

A PECKHAM man has said his calls to downsize from his four bed home into his late dad’s two bed flat have gone unanswered.

James Andrews, 50, lives alone in a four-bed council flat in Huguenot Square.

He suffers from type-two diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and fibromyalgia, a condition that causes chronic musculoskeletal pain.

The former glazier says he would like to

move into his late father’s two-bed flat in Stanswood Gardens, Camberwell, which has been vacant since his old man died in December from a brain haemorrhage. But he claims his requests to Southwark Council have gone unanswered.

“I feel like no one is listening, like I am hitting my head against a brick wall,” James said.

“It’s just me who lives here, besides my carer who stays three nights a week.

“I have very high blood pressure and have problems sleeping. I need a walking stick and I can only climb so many stairs.

So the family were “stunned” to receive a letter on January 29 with the conclusion of an assessment, which found no “medical requirement” for the council to help them.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for housing, said: “I do sympathise with this family and the difficulties they are experiencing, but our housing stock is facing unprecedented demand and the housing team is having to ensure any new allocations or banding follows our allocations policy to make sure the system is fair to everyone.

“In this case a medical assessment in January found nothing to suggest that the family needed to be moved into a higher priority band. However, since hearing about this case, I have asked one of our housing officers to speak to our occupational therapists and see if they can make a secondary assessment.

“In the meantime our repairs team is already in contact with the family about their security concerns and we will work with them to help make their home more secure.”

This house has five flights of stairs and I struggle getting around.

“Really I would like to move into my father’s old place. His two-bedroom house only has ten steps, and would feel more like home to me.”

James buried his father after Christmas, and his old council flat remains empty.

“No one lives there now,” James said.

“So it would be better for me to have his old place, and a new family could move in here. I have asked the council to move

me on medical grounds, but they keep rejecting me. I need a house that’s suitable for my needs. Something with a kitchen and everything I need on the ground floor.

“It feels like this could easily be sorted but the council is just giving me the runaround.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for housing, said: “Sometimes it is difficult to explain why someone can’t immediately move into a specific vacant property, but we always have to start from scratch, advertise the empty home for those on the waiting list to bid on, and allocate on the basis of need.

“I sincerely hope a suitable one-bed property becomes available to Mr Andrews and the situation is resolved very soon.”

Stars to shine

SOUTHWARK: This year’s Southwark Stars awards event will take place tonight, Thursday, March 17.

For eight years the award has highlighted contributions of volunteers in the area and will be presenting 60 different accoladest.

This includes nine special awards, with categories such as Young Volunteer of the Year. Others being honoured will have put in at least 100 hours of community time in the borough in the last year. Awards will be presented at the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre from 6.45pm.

A GUY’S Hospital psychotherapist who had worked as a secret agent during World War Two is to have a book written about her exploits.

Margaret Branch worked for many years at St Guy’s Hospital and was a well-known psychologist who worked with children.

Prior to her employment at Guy’s, Ms Branch, who died in 1992, led a fascinating life as a secret agent in the early years of the Second World War. Before her exploits in France in the 1940s, she was an ambulance driver during the Spanish Civil War and helped smuggle Jews out of occupied Prague.

Now her story has attracted the attention of contracts coordinator Ed Knox, 34, who wants further to illuminate her life in a biography.

Mr Knox came across Margaret’s remarkable story after he discovered he was related to a friend of hers, Camilla Ruegg, around five years ago.

This work would be Mr Knox’s first attempted literary effort and despite having a nearly completed draft he is keen to find even more information.

“People didn’t know the full picture of what she did,” he said.

He added: “She was very straight to the point and outspoken, she did what she did but things she did in later life she would keep confidential.”

“It’s a personal effort for me, those who knew her only knew little aspects of her life.”

As a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Airforce, Mrs Branch joined the French resistance but was captured by the Nazis.

She was jailed and tortured before she was smuggled out after a friend bribed a guard with gold.

Despite the limited success of her first mission to France she was

desperate to return and Mr Knox has suggested she managed to personally convince Winston Churchill of her operation’s importance.

Upon her more triumphant return from France at the end of the war she travelled to Germany in 1945 to work with the UN’s Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA). No details of her exploits behind enemy lines can be found.

It was during this time that she met her future partner Camilla Ruegg, who also came to work at Guy’s Hospital and helped co-found the National Association of Gifted Children (now Potential Plus UK).

She dabbled as a journalist upon her return to London and was associated with the ‘Hampstead set’, which included authors George Orwell and Inez Holden.

Her desire to work with people led her to study under influential Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung in the early 1950s, an experience that inspired much of her professional life.

Mr Knox added: “She did every job under the sun, she worked at a munitions factory in Staffordshire and dealt with the emotional side of injuries sustained by women there.”

Her work with children’s therapy became a prominent concern with her belief that gifted children ought to be awarded a deeper and richer curriculum rather than a fast track through conventional classes Another key part of her life was campaigning for the betterment of conditions for LGBT communities and she volunteered for The Gay & Lesbian Bereavement Project in her later life.

Mr Knox is appealing for further information about Mrs Branch and her former house mate and colleague Camilla Ruegg.

THE Bermondsey Community Kitchen welcomed prospective new trainees this week as The Prince’s Trust made a visit to the centre.

The group visited the Blue Market Square centre on March 15, where they were treated to some freshlycooked lasagne prepared by the current trainees, before taking part in interviews with the centres instructors.

Colin Hills, outcomes executive at the Prince’s Trust, a charity that helps young people into employment, told the News: “Bermondsey Community Kitchen

and the Prince’s Trust go hand in hand. It is perfect for us. They really are supportive of their trainees and young people.” The kitchen and its trainees have prepared food for a number of Prince’s Trust events, and now the charity are looking to solidify their partnership by helping to find new trainees for the centre.

The kitchen was founded by Mike Donovan, owner of Dunns Deli, as a way to keep young people in south London off the streets and putting their energy towards an important skill. The kitchen gives trainees a chance to learn new skills and receive a Level 2 City and Guilds qualification in professional cookery, setting them on their way to a new career.

Campaigners slam tower plans over affordable housing ELEPHANT AND CASTLE

HOUSING CAMPAIGNERS have slammed proposals for a 39-storey apartment block in Elephant and Castle for not including any “social” or “affordable” housing.

Plans for the Skipton House development between London Road and Newington Causeway were submitted by London and Regional Properties, and Ministry of Sound nightclub is also worried it will prove a nuisance.

The 35% Campaign, a group pressuring housing associations and Southwark Council to honour promises to supply housing at £100-per-week “social” rates that local people can afford, have spoken out. Jerry Flynn of the campaign said the developer’s application form published in December “clearly shows that there would be no affordable housing in the scheme” and all 421 flats would be flogged at market rate.

Southwark Council’s current housing policy states that thirty-five-per-cent of any new development should earmarked as “affordable housing”, and fifty-percent of that quota should also be reserved as “social housing”.

Jerry also pointed out the developer’s planning statement says the 461 units will be inhabited by only 675 people – “an average of 1.46 persons per unit” he said.

He also points out that the application

states there will be 421 units in the development, a detail that was missing from the company’s public consultations.

A spokesperson for London & Regional said: “This will be an iconic development, providing new cultural space and importantly new jobs and homes.

“These proposals are an essential part of the regeneration of Elephant and Castle which has been led by Southwark Council over the last ten years. It completes the north side of the new Elephant Square, a Mayoral project to turn the infamous roundabout into a public space.

"We are aware of the objection raised by Ministry of Sound and we are in continuous discussion with them to resolve this issue."

The spokesman added that the developers “have yet to finalise” the number of affordable housing units to be made available.

Meanwhile lawyers for Ministry of Sound have written to the council asking for the application to be put on hold until the developers make a full assessment of the scheme’s resilience to noise.

The nightclub’s owners fear an increase in people living nearby could lead to noise complaints. The issue saw the club win a deal with Southwark Council last year for developers to provide the club with money for sound proofing, before the Eileen House development was given approval.

New research with thousands of employee and employers interviewed released to mark the start of National Apprenticeship Week has found businesses rank hiring the right staff as the most important factor in helping them grow. The research shows that eight in ten managers believe apprentices are vital to their organisation’s expansion plans. Plus managers hiring apprentices were five times more likely to believe the company would expand rapidly than

Two thirds (61%) of managers in growing firms felt that hiring the right staff or having employees with the right skills was the most important factor in realising the company’s ambitions. THIS WEEK is National Apprenticeship Week and it all kicked off in Southwark at The Shard in London Bridge.

Across the country firms, colleges and training providers have been holding sessions to encourage even more people to become apprentices and companies to take them on. And the government is committed to three million apprenticeships by 2020.

It is also about encouraging firms to use apprenticeships within current workforce to allow workers to up-skill.

The strap line for this year’s National Apprenticeship week is: “An apprenticeship can take you anywhere”,

with a particular focus on higher skills to show how young people, entrepreneurs and businesses can “rise to the top” through traineeships and apprenticeships.

At The Shard a number of companies announced major commitments to apprenticeships, including Starbucks, Prezzo, Fortnum and Mason, Deloitte and Greene King.

David Sproul, chief executive of Deloitte UK, said: “Improving social mobility is one of the UK’s biggest challenges. One of the ways in which we are seeking to address this is by doubling the number of positions available through our BrightStart Business

It’s not a pitch but a stadium they are building in Dulwich

THE ARTICLE last week ‘Don’t build new pitch on our fields – campaigners slam Hamlet plans’ (Southwark News, March 10, 2016) contained an inaccuracy.

Hadley Property Group (HPG) is not proposing simply to build a pitch, but to build a stadium, complete with terraces and a surrounding high wall, on what is Metropolitan Open Land – a designation as strong as Green Belt in planning terms.

We the Friends of Green Dale oppose HPG’s plans for the stadium and Southwark Council’s plans for the rest of the site, and we will work to preserve the unique green space of Green Dale for wildlife and the local community.

Friends of Green Dale have been good neighbours of Dulwich Hamlet FC for years, many of our members are fans and we wholeheartedly support calls for a secure and sustainable future for DHFC. We would like to see much more detail on this aspect of the plans.

Friends of Green Dale have worked with HPG on issues concerning the Green Dale fields’ day-to-day management over the last two years, and we have been happy to have hugely tidied up the site, confirm public access and create a space which is now used and loved by schools and local people. We intend to continue a constructive relationship with HPG with regard to their management of Green Dale, while at the same time strongly opposing the plans for a new stadium.

Ultimately, we hope that the longterm futures of both the football club and Green Dale fields can be secured without endangering one or the other.

The current plans do not do this.

Help with my book as councillor, leader and mayor of Southwark

AFTER LIVING in Southwark for over forty years, twenty eight as a Southwark councillor,

my wife and I have moved out of the borough to the rural village of Godstone in Surrey.

We both are very sorry to have to leave the borough, but we are both not as nimble as we used to be, while my arthritis has made stairs difficult to climb - so we have bought a bungalow in this lovely village.

During my time as councillor I had the privilege for over twenty four years of representing the people of Camberwell on the council and would like to thank all the people and organisations in Camberwell for their friendship and help over those years. There are too many to mention individually, but to you all many thanks and both Iris and I will always have Camberwell close to our hearts.

I also had the privilege whilst being a member of the council of being Chairman of Housing, Leader of the Council and from the time of the abolition of the GLC to the creation Mayor of London I was the council’s representative on the London Fire & Civil Defence authority and its leader from 1990 – 2000. It was an honour to be able to represent the people of Southwark in these positions as well as being the borough’s mayor in 1989-90. To all people in the borough whom I came into contact with I would like to thank them all for their help and to many for their friendship.

When Mayor will you consider this?

I WAS wondering if any of the mayoral candiates would change London Buses from being a mobile bill board to a better transport system.

I have lived in London for 40 years and only know a handful of bus routes. When I look at a London bus I see a destination on

the front which is of little use, unless I wanted to go there. I could think of many different routes it could take to get there.

Why don’t London buses stop having an advert along the side and the bus route as they do in Brighton, (see photos above). One is able to catch a bus as you can see where it is going.

If you agree with this, wouldn't it be a grand idea to introduce it on some routes to see if it was beneficial to London?

Are you descended from Leather Workers?

I WONDER if your newspaper would be willing to help me in my search for a line of my ancestors that moved from the Devonshire village of Bow as part of a considerable migration of men and their families to work in the Bermondsey Leather Market some 150 years ago.

Indeed, the Bermondsey censuses between 1851 and 1871 show over 40 leatherworkers with the Devonshire village of Bow as their birthplace.

My Great, Great Grandfather, William Waldron, was born in the village of Bow and married there in 1854 moving with his wife and three children to Kennford just south of Exeter sometime between the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

I know that a John Waldron was baptised in Exeter in 1812, moved with his parents to Bow where they had two more sons. John then married and raised his own family in Bow. In fact, his is the only Waldron Family in the Bow area on the 1841 and 1851 Devonshire censuses and was very probably related to my Great, Great Grandfather. John Waldron and his wider family including two Son-InLaws then appear as Tanners in Bermondsey censuses from 1861 onwards. John died in Bermondsey in 1881.

If any of your readers are descended from the Leather Workers that moved from Bow (in Devon) to live and work in Bermondsey, especially anyone descended from John Waldron (1812 – 1881), I would be delighted to hear from them.

MY NAME is Cathy Daly (nee O'Donohoe). I live in Dublin now but I used to live in London in the 1980s. I worked with a girl as a secretary (we shared an office) called Yvonne Cohen for Gleeds, Quantity Surveyors in Regent Street.

This was back in 1988. I remember she had a son called Simon who was about five or six at the time.

I only stayed there about nine months and I lost touch with her. This was before mobile phones and Facebook!

I remember her telling me that she lived near Elephant and Castle.

This is my last column for Southwark News

I

’M SORRY to say this is my final monthly article with Southwark News.

On the 5th of May a new London Assembly Member will be elected for Lambeth and Southwark at City Hall – alongside a new Mayor - and I will be slipping out of the back door into a quieter life, where I can spend some more time with my lovely (also now retired) husband, Mick. Having been an elected politician for 22 years and on the London Assembly for 16, I wanted to say a special farewell and thanks to Southwark News and its readers who have been a significant part of my life since the GLA was created in 2000.

In my view, a sadder consequence of the rise of the internet has been a decline in good local journalism and newspapers. Many local newspapers now run with substantially reduced numbers of staff and some often rely heavily on interns and volunteers. But, as one of the few remaining truly independent local papers, Southwark News continues to offer a high quality product to its readers.

It’s stayed packed with features and history items that allow the people who move into and live in the area to bond with Southwark’s history and share in its fascinating character.

It’s also an important outlet for Southwark’s local businesses and tradespeople and contributes to our vibrant local small business economy. I always knew that if there was was an issue I needed to alert people to, Southwark News would apply its good journalistic and professional judgement and make space for fair and balanced coverage. If the rise of online news continues to contribute to demise of good local journalism we are going to see a diminution of local democracy, a growing danger to the public interest.

People need reliable information on local issues from independent sources, rather than blogs from individuals, marketing materials or other propaganda. And let’s not forget – not everyone uses the internet!

I will continue to buy Southwark News and I hope its readers will continue to be as active and loyal as they are now.

Southwark News is in fact one of Southwark’s best assets and I wish everyone involved in it well. Despite no longer being Southwark’s Assembly Member, the ‘News’ will certainly continue to be an important source of information on key happenings in the borough for me - long may you stay in print!

Luce left me lost

THE PRESS release that lured me out to see JC Lee’s Luce spoke of it being ‘gripping, funny, fast-paced and profoundly disturbing’.

At the theatre the programme notes instilled even more anticipatory excitement as they created a whole background to the events that were going to be played out before me of a young, home-grown, potential terrorist planning to wreak havoc on America and the community with his cache of explosives and radical ideology.

Luce was neither gripping, funny, fast-paced or disturbing, and was more a damp squib than explosive, plus a spoiler alert, on a par of ‘the butler did it’, given by the usher as you go into the auditorium.

What Luce was, though, was very well performed with dialogue that was very well written and perfectly delivered. A minimalist set threw the cracking interchanges into stark relief, just like the black-mirror backdrop that disturbing drama. was given an eclipse feel by its back lighting.

Luce is a top college student who starts to act strange, writes disconcerting essays, and is caught with stuff he shouldn’t have, but he says it isn’t his and for this mummy’s boy that is more or less it. Most people have had letters from the school saying their child has been misbehaving, and then the beloved offspring counters that the teacher has got it in for them.

That’s Luce in a nutshell.

Alas, for me anyway, the story went nowhere. There was a nice scene with the mum and the son’s airhead exgirlfriend but which had absolutely no relevance to the play at all. She came, she did ditsy, she departed. It did not move the play on, and it did not really give us any clues into Luce possibly being radicalised, any leanings towards terrorism, or even let us know if he was a nice guy or not. Everything was left hanging.

Through just looks we see both his dark and light side. The support cast, too, cannot be faulted, and neither can their American accents. If it wasn’t for Mel Giedroyc giving the game away with her well-known TV face I could easily have thought they had all been shipped over from the USA to play the parts. Luce, nonetheless, is all ‘is he, isn’t he?’ with nothing conclusive that we can leave happy with; or something an audience could at least debate on the way home.

The programme notes said that a lot of the back story was pared away, but with it I fear a lot of our understanding of Luce’s actions or misrepresentations were lost in that stripping down. The potential for something outstanding was lost.

The day sixty-seven died at church

SEVENTY TWO years ago, there lived a rector at St Peter’s church in Walworth whose bravery and leadership matched his ability with a pen, writes Owen Sheppard...

During the Blitz the church became an extraordinary focal point for the area. Its cavernous crypt was the most sought-after sanctuary over any Anderson shelter during the daily raids, and no doubt its presence preserved many families’ lives.

But as its rector from 1937 to 1944, the Reverend John Gabriel Markam recalled in his scarcely circulated memoirs that St Peter’s saw its fair share of disasters.

Markham’s memoirs first paint a picture of Walworth as a working class district of 11,000, where rows of terraced houses sprung up along what was Walworth Common in the 1820’s.

It was Markham who volunteered the church crypt to

the authorities as a public shelter, just as it had been in World War One. It was first designated to shelter for 230 before the first airraid sirens rang on September 2, 1939. The crypt ran the length of the church and its insides were supported with four aisles of brick arches supporting the six-inch thick ceiling of 15 foot blocks of York stone. And there was no water or electricity inside.

“We had all been indoctrinated into this idea that it would all start with a massive bombing of London,” Markam wrote with a touch of humility. But the following months, he said, came to be known as the “phoney war” and the people’s urgency “slipped away” as the sirens fell on deaf ears.

In July 1940, Markham wrote, “the Battle of Britain began”. He neglects to give an exact date, but

he says the air raids started “on a brilliant sunny day with the distant rumbling of anti-aircraft guns. The sirens wailed… the

What he most loathed about the nightly raids was the “continual drone” of aircraft and “the crash of bombs preceded by their eerie descending whistle and whoosh” which would last from 6pm until

6am. He vividly remembers treading delicately over bodies sleeping in the crypt “like sardines” lying on carpets, blankets and mattresses, while some slept in deck chairs or lay on narrow wooden benches.

But on October 28, the church took a direct hit, and Markham relives the chaos that ensued.

From outside in the church yard he saw two bombs crash through the ceiling and “orange flashes” erupt from the windows. “Then I heard a confused murmur from the crypt, and a dusty figure struggled among the sandbags in the doorway at the steps leading to the shelter,” he said.

Markham gave an estimate of 200 casualties to the telephonist, and began leading the rescue effort with doctors and wardens to get the buried civilians out, and into a make-shift triage at the neighboring school.

Next morning there were new

estimates of 250 seriously hurt and 70 killed, later confirmed to be 67 dead – including an 83year-old and a baby of 11 months.

Both “semi-armour piercing bombs” had exploded on the floor of the crypt, having gone through the church ceiling. One had pierced straight through the church organ, sending shards of pipes everywhere, and detonated next to where a family of six had slept, “blowing them to pieces”.

The blast had “literally lifted the whole church, causing the brickwork to part” and it wasn’t for several weeks until the church could be put to use. Despite the tragedy, Reverend Markham says St Peter’s remained the centre of his faithful congregation throughout the war.

“We were much more fortunate than the majority of the churches in the neighbourhood, which were either completely blown to pieces or burnt,” he concluded.

The pie looked like it could feed two, and with the heap of greens alongside it became too much for the young man who had no doubt overloaded on the squid, although he made sure to eat all the coley and the prawn before he surrendered.

My duck was as tender and as moist as duck can be. The champ was a revelation; the bone marrow adding taste and texture not usually found in the

humble mashed potato. I also had a side of Jerusalem Artichokes in Smoked Oil that were quite adorable. Boy Burkett was not a fan of these so I didn’t have to share. Good.

We sat, sated, with serene smiles of satisfaction on our faces. I could hear him going on about his recent trips to the gym, but his words flowed over and around me while in my mind I replayed the recent culinary delights. That was until I was jerked back into the real world when I heard say him tell me how much weight he had lost off his wrists!

What? I kid you not…

By the time we were shown the dessert menu my companion had recovered his appetite and was in for the Salted Flourless Chocolate Cake with Pistachio Ice Cream, while I could not wait to get my hands on the Sticky Toffee Apple Pudding and Calvados Custard. How can anyone resist that?

We decided to share them and both dishes were extraordinarily nice. How they made a cake without flour I don’t

know, but if it’s as good as this I don’t care if I never have a cake with flour again.

And the pudding was comfort food at the highest level of comfort. That little luxury was enjoyed with a sweet and smooth Tawny Port that topped off a night of sheer delight.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to make the above order under the powers of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

The effect of the order would be to provide off-street car parking controls in car parks located within or adjacent to CAMBERWELL LEISURE CENTRE, THE CASTLE LEISURE CENTRE, DULWICH LEISURE CENTRE, PECKHAM PULSE, SEVEN ISLANDS LEISURE CENTRE and SURREY DOCKS WATERSPORTS CENTRE:- (a) the car parks may include visitor parking bays and disabled persons’ parking bays; (b) the car parks would be for the use of passenger vehicles of less than 2.28 metres in height and 5 metres in length, goods vehicles of less than 2.28 metres in height and 5 metres in length, motor cycles and invalid carriages; (c) vehicles may be left for a maximum of four hours free of charge in the visitor parking bays and without time limit in the disabled persons’ parking bays (providing they display a valid disabled persons’ badge); (d) the car parks would operate during the leisure centres' opening times; (e) vehicles would not be permitted to wait or park at any time in any part of the car parks other than within the marked parking bays; (f) the offering for sale of goods or services from or in connection with vehicles in any part of the off-street car parks would be prohibited without the written consent of the council; and (g) exception to the above controls would be made in respect of certain Leisure and culture services or leisure centre operator's vehicles and such contractors' vehicles as may be from time to time authorised by the council.

DULWICH HAMLET dropped out of the Ryman Premier Division play-off spots this week as their dismal run of league form continued with a defeat at Billericay last Saturday.

That 4-1 loss in Essex saw the home side leapfrog Dulwich in the table and Kingstonian’s 4-0 win on Monday night against Brentwood Town saw Hamlet slip to sixth in the league.

Their poor form in 2016 has seen the Champion Hill side slip from top spot at Christmas to sixth this week, a distant sixteen points behind leaders Hampton & Richmond after Monday’s games.

At the weekend Dulwich got off to the best possible start when Ashley Carew gave them a sixth minute lead, converting a penalty awarded after Ryan Moss was fouled in the box.

But that lead only lasted seven minutes before Jordan Cox levelled things up.

By the time the half-time whistle was blown Hamlet were a goal behind

thanks to a Glenn Poole spot kick.

The exit of the Pink and Blues midfielder Danny Waldren, after protesting the award of another penalty, proved decisive especially when Cox then netted from twelve yards.

The Billericay man bagged his hattrick ten minutes later to round off the scoring for the day and put another nail in Hamlet’s promotion hopes.

On Tuesday night Dulwich finally got back to winning ways, and moved back in the play-off spots, when they defeated Wingate and Finchley.

First half goals from Dean McDonald and Carew put Hamlet in the ascendency, and although Aron Pollock pulled a goal back for the visitors after the break Dulwich held on for three much needed points.

This Saturday Dulwich entertain Burgess Hill Town at Champion Hill in a Ryman Premier League encounter that kicks off at 3pm.

Then next Tuesday Hamlet travel to local rivals Tooting and Mitcham for a London County Cup semi-final clash.

That game starts at 7.45pm.

BERMONDSEY BOXER Joe McCorry picked up his third win as a pro when he defeated Jason Nesbitt on points at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

The 25-year-old has now won three times since his debut in June last year and he remained unbeaten by overcoming journeyman Nesbitt.

Boxing at welterweight McCorry, who fought for Fisher Boxing Club as an amateur, would have been expected to beat his latest opponent who has fought 207 times in the paid ranks.

Nesbitt has lost 192 of those contests and McCorry ensured he was not one of those boxers who the Birmingham man could claim a win over.

The strike on 21 minutes was the single effort that eluded Black and Whites keeper Joel Hannington who put in a stellar performance in between the sticks.

A succession of late corners almost saw the Fish earn a point for their efforts but ultimately Warren’s goal was the difference in the 1-0 away win.

With relegation a distant threat, mathematically possible but highly unlikely, the result dropped Fisher to fifteenth spot, out of nineteen teams, in the Southern Counties East Football League.

This weekend the Rotherhithe club, who play home games at Champion Hill in East Dulwich, travel to league leaders Greenwich Borough which looks set to be one of their toughest fixtures this campaign.

STANSFELD BOUNCED back from a shock 4-0 defeat last week to defeat table topping Erith 147 in style last Saturday.

The 4-1 win over the league leaders was all the more rewarding as seven days earlier the Bermondsey side has put in a shocking showing against Fleetwood United.

Speaking after the Erith contest Stansfeld manager Lloyd Bradley said: “This was a superb response by the players, and they deserve all the credit.

“Their attitudes were spot on, they worked their socks off for each other, as well as playing some great attacking football and I was extremely proud of all fourteen of them today.”

SOUTHWARK WORKING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA

Last Tuesday, Millwall made special arrangements for a group of people who attend the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Cafe at Darwin Court every Tuesday in Walworth, to have a special Millwall day out.

Following on from Southwark’s Dementia Action Alliance official launch back in December 2014 at Millwall Football Club, a new free weekly adult walking football session delivered by coaches from Millwall Community Trust has started up which takes place at the Dockland Settlements in Rotherhithe every Friday morning.

Dementia is one of the most significant social challenges to date and leading a healthy lifestyle can

help reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Millwall Community Trust have teamed up with Southwark Council, Alzheimer’s Society, Southwark Dementia Action Alliance, London FA and the Dockland Settlements to provide weekly open access walking football sessions for older people and those affected by dementia and an opportunity for them to socialise with others over a tea and coffee.

Last week the group from Darwin Court were given a taster day of what they can expect from the weekly sessions but were also given a few added additions, courtesy of Millwall Football Club. The guests were transported by the famous

Millwall Routemaster bus and their first stop was The Den itself where Millwall bus driver and ground tour official John West showed the guests round the changing rooms and then took round by pitch side. John spoke about the history of Millwall where some guests started remembering some passed Millwall legends which developed some interesting conversations. It was lunch at the Millwall café before boarding the bus to the Dockland Settlements.

The centre kindly laid on tea and coffee in their café before all the guests went out onto the outdoor 5a-side 3G pitch where took part in some basic football drills and a match, all at walking pace.

It’s important to us that we create these opportunities for local people. After the tour of The Den, it was clear that many of them were not so sure about playing football.

Once they realised that everyone was on an equal playing level and that running is classed as a foul, all the group soon started to enjoy the walking football session and all had fun. There were so many different mixed abilities and disabilities but everyone supported one another.

The new sessions are open to both older people and those affected by

dementia and are designed to help keep participants active at their own pace and also look forward to socialising with others over a tea and coffee”.

NEIL HARRIS declined to list the grievances he had with Kevin Wright after Swindon came from two goals down at the County Ground last Saturday to salvage a point and dent Millwall’s automatic promotion chances.

Harris simply said there were too many to chronicle but did have a figure to hand: He cited seventeen fouls given against Millwall to four for to illustrate the apparently one-sided nature of Wright’s performance.

The Lions boss has rarely been as frustrated with a referee this season as he was last weekend. That feeling certainly surfaced during the second half when he was spoken to by the official after Jimmy Abdou looked like he had been fouled just in front of the technical area only for Wright to give a throw-in to Swindon.

Harris said he asked the referee why he wasn’t giving more decisions to

Millwall and why Swindon’s defenders were seemingly allowed use roughhouse tactics to subdue Steve Morison and Lee Gregory.

His anger and sense of injustice only deepened just after the hour mark.

Millwall were 2-0 up and until then had been relatively comfortably dealing with Swindon’s forward forays, which were incessant yet rarely breached the away side’s back four.

Harris felt Byron Webster and Mark Beevers were commandingly dealing with the home side’s crosses. Jordan Archer had been required to make just one save, from Nicky Ajose’s tame first-half header.

But when Raphael Rossi-Branco picked up the ball on the right and got round Carlos Edwards the entire tone of the contest was about to change.

Edwards put his arm out to make minimal contact with the Brazilian but surely not enough to fell the sizeably built defender. However, Wright, standing yards away, pointed to the spot and Ajose slammed his spot-kick to Archer’s left.

Worse would come later.

Yet, early on, there had been few hints at the controversy that would follow.

The first quarter of this contest was like a game of backs and forwards.

Millwall were two goals up after eleven minutes and should have been three.

Gregory scored his 22nd of the season in the sixth minute when he finished

Jed Wallace’s cross past Lawrence Vigouroux. Gregory should have made it 23 moments later when he found himself in front of goal with only Vigouroux to beat. The Swindon goalkeeper, however, made himself just big enough that the striker couldn’t squeeze a shot inside the near post.

But the Lions, and specifically Morison, didn’t dwell on it. Swindon’s defence had barely pushed out after that chance when the Millwall captain was through from Beevers’ long header forward, and he finished with confidence for his fifth goal in five games.

Credit to Swindon, they didn’t shirk the challenge but though they had 60 per cent possession in the opening half, Archer had just that one save to make when he pushed Ajose’s header away.

But the Robins are made of sterner stuff than they were earlier in the season when Milwall so easily beat them 2-0 at The Den. They may have churned through managers and players at a more promiscuous rate than most other clubs in League One but under current boss Luke Williams they appear to have found a level of consistency and toughness.

Millwall also showed why they have been so difficult to beat away from home. Webster and Beevers were immense in the second half, directing Jimmy Abdou and Ben Thompson in front of them and patrolling the area in

front of their own box where Ajose and Jonathan Obika could be so dangerous.

Ajose’s penalty lifted belief around the stadium that Swindon could get something from the game but when Anton Rodgers, son of former Liverpool boss Brendan, whistled a shot wide of Archer’s post in the first minute of added time it seemed like their last chance had gone.

But in the 94th minute, Bradley Barry’s cross was flicked on by centreback Jordan Turnbull and there was midfielder Michael Doughty at the back post to beat Archer with a header from close range.

It was cruel on Millwall but for all the disappointment and anger there was the realisation that the unbeaten run had been stretched to five and perhaps this point will be significant come the end of the season. Swindon had, after all, won their previous four games.

It was, though, difficult for Harris and his players to think of it that way.

TWO CURRENT players, as well as the current manager, make Alan Dunne’s best-ever Millwall XI.

The former Lions defender and captain, who left the club last summer, reveals his selection in his autobiography: Dunne It The Hard Way. In this extract, he picks the best players he played alongside during his 23 years at Millwall.

Goalkeeper: David Forde (2008 - present) I cannot remember another player whose passion to win surpasses Fordey’s.

Sometimes Fordey’s aggression can get the better of him. At Watford, in October 2014, we were the victims of some inexplicable refereeing decisions and at half-time a very angry, very frustrated Fordey ripped the visiting dressing room door off its hinges.

Millwall, under Ian Holloway, had a policy, like the All Blacks, of always clearing their changing room on away trips. We left our Vicarage Road dressing room spick and span just a pity about the door hanging off its hinges.

Right-back: Kevin Muscat (2003 2005) Muscat was able to whistle and make it sound like the referee’s whistle.

Garry Flitcroft of Blackburn was clear on goal during one game and Muscat whistled.

Flitcroft instinctively stopped, picked up the ball and threw it down in frustration, probably thinking he was offside. The referee said to him, ‘What are you doing? I never blew.’ He then awarded Millwall a free-kick for Flitcroft’s handball.

Centre-back: Richard Shaw (2006 - 2008) Shaw was in the side at a time when Millwall were struggling under Willie Donachie in League 1, yet was named Player of the Year, just as he had been at Palace and Coventry.

Despite the problems of the team, Shaw always stood out with his superb defending, his passing, marking ability, positional sense and awareness and, despite not being the

tallest, his heading.

No, because he was finishing his long and distinguished playing career as mine was starting, though we played together in the reserves a few times.

While Rhino was a one-club man, Sean Dyche had played most of his career with Chesterfield and as much as he was a calm, composed defender, he could talk for England. He could chat about a Mars bar for three days.

Dyche loved his food and was always telling us about his cooking though as a young player I must confess it was a subject that did not hold my interest.

from everyone. Losing was a personal insult for Wisey who was loved by the Millwall fans for the way he could win the ball from someone much bigger than he was – one way or the other.

Left midfield: Andros Townsend (March 2011 - May 2011) I have never seen such professionalism in one so young. He was 20 when he joined us on loan from Spurs – Millwall were the sixth club he had been loaned to.

When he finished training he would be the first into the ice bath to prepare for the exertions ahead. Townsend wasn’t really interested in anything outside football, he didn’t really join in the dressing-room jokes or socialising. In his short spell at the The Den, I saw Townsend destroy teams.

Striker: Harry Kane (December 2011 - May 2012) At Millwall. Kane played alongside Darius Henderson in attack and while his ability was obvious I never thought he would soon be one of the Premier League’s leading strikers. He did, however, score the best goal I have ever seen, albeit in training.

The goalkeeper threw the ball to Kane who flicked it over his marker’s head before scoring with a stunning volley from the narrowest of angles.

The only goal I can compare it with is Marco van Basten’s Euro 88 strike for Holland against the Soviet Union.

Striker: Neil Harris (1998 - 2004; 2007 - 2011) I have known Neil Harris for more than half my life and he is someone I would class not just as a Millwall legend, but also someone who has been very helpful, giving me plenty of good advice about the bad things I was doing as a teenager.

After training, he would stay behind to practise finishing, another player sending the ball over so he could strike it on the volley or control it with one touch and shoot with the next. I do not see today’s generation putting in such extra work.

Saints and Swansea the models for Millwall

JOHN BERYLSON has admitted “it took years” to find the right replacement for Kenny Jackett as Millwall boss, but the Lions chairman feels the club have finally got it right with the “brilliant” Neil Harris.

Berylson, speaking exclusively to the News, said the club were already “going downhill” before the appointment of Ian Holloway as manager in January 2014.

Jackett left in June 2013 following nearly six years in charge. Holloway took over from the sacked Steve Lomas with Millwall in 21st place in the Championship, a point above the relegation zone. The former Crystal Palace and Blackpool boss kept the club up in that 2013-14 season, but was fired fourteen months later with Harris taking over on a temporary basis before being appointed permanently in April.

Berylson insisted there were few doubters when Holloway was chosen to try to turn around the club’s fortunes, and the Lions chairman also revealed he was contacted by supporters concerned about the identity of his inexperienced successor.

“The appointment of Ian Holloway was universally acclaimed,” Berylson said.

“And he did keep us up that year. It was Ian Holloway, Premier League, and I took it for granted. I oversaw a rebuilding of the team but unfortunately for all parties it didn’t quite work out.

“I don’t know if we’d have done so well anyway, we were already going

downhill. They were three painful years in the Championship.

“Kenny’s last year was painful, which I think is one of the reasons he left. We’re still very close but we hadn’t really rebuilt the team.

“With Lomas and Holloway it didn’t really go well. It was a few years of not great decisions.

“But I think this year, and I wouldn’t say every decision has been right, but we’re close.

“And even though Neil is a fan favourite you’d be shocked at how many emails I got from people questioning my judgement to make him manager at 37, untested.

“They loved him as ‘Neil’, but maybe weren’t sure as ‘Neil the manager’. I think he’s turning out to be one of the best there is. I have complete confidence in him.”

The current Millwall manager made sweeping changes to the playing staff last summer, with eighteen of the biggest earners and senior players such as Alan Dunne moved on.

Berylson says there was agreement that the club needed a change of direction after a number of years of decline in the Championship.

“When Neil was the interim manager I pretty much said to him, ‘If you do okay – and relegation is probably going to happen, it’s not on you head – and if you’re interested in the job then we’ll talk’.

“And he wanted the job. I didn’t make him fight for it, I gave it to him immediately.

“We agreed on everything.

I said, ‘You’ve got to start this anew’. Even though in the past we hadn’t invested in our youth, that’s exactly what we’re going to do in the future.

“To me, the second most important person in the club’s management is (Millwall academy boss) Scott Fitzgerald. We have to keep building

“Look at it this year. I knew Mahlon Romeo and Noah Chesmain were pretty good. I liked the way Romeo played but I thought (his debut) would still be a year or two away. And now he has emerged.”

The Lions chairman cites Southampton and Swansea as examples of clubs that have grown organically by bringing through their own players in a specific system.

The Saints finished seventh in League One when Millwall won promotion in 2009-10 while Swansea were seventh in the Championship the same season.

Transfer policy

We thought about it and looked at it but Neil’s concern is stacking up older players in front of the younger players. He wants the young players to know they have a chance.

Take a look at our squad, who do you want to push back a spot? Do you want to push Ben Thompson back? Have you seen how well he’s been playing? Given the chance they come through and I’ve made the mistake where I’ve put in older players in front of younger players and they just didn’t get there.

We have Tony Craig coming back, Sid Nelson is right behind Byron Webster. If Sid has to play we’re not afraid of that, he’s done really well for a young lad. Bringing in players in January, we did it last year, we brought in nine, ten players. How did that work out?

Wigan brought in people like (Sam) Morsy but we played great against them. We completely controlled that game and had an enormous amount of chances. So I’m okay with not strengthening in January. There were other years we’ve done it and it didn’t really work out to our advantage particularly well.

The only way I would’ve done something in January would have been to cover injury. I don’t want a second-rater in any position, and if it’s a first-rater he’s going to want to play. But I have Lee Gregory and Steve Morison, and if I have three of these strikers for two positions, then someone’s not going to be happy.

Steve and Lee might be the most fearsome duo in the league. Right now the chemistry in the dressing room is fantastic.

Promotion hopes

Teams have to go through transitions. I think we missed a couple of transition opportunities years ago. Last year and this year are transitions and if we’re able to have a successful season in a transition year, then that’s fantastic.

Can we finish in the automatic promotion spots? That’s getting a bridge too far, maybe. But in the play-offs I would hope we’d do well. Maybe it’s heresy to say this but maybe it’s more fun to go through Wembley to get promoted. In the last 25 or 30 years Millwall have only been to Wembley five times and three of them have been with me, so I’m getting used to it! I like it and I enjoy it.

I’m not afraid of the play-offs and the squad is getting stronger. Right now, I don’t fear any team in this league. There’s only one thing I fear and that's injuries. We’ve got to stay healthy.

He says he isn’t worried if Millwall don’t get out of League One this season, satisfied that the new culture at the club tilts the odds towards success following naturally.

“This year, whatever happens, happens. If we get promoted, then great,” he said. “If we don’t we’ll do it next year.

“You have to try to keep on building a stronger team, lower the average age of the team. You do need stronger, older players to teach the young players. We have that in Tony Craig, we have that in Steve Morison and David Forde. Look at David with Jordan Archer. I never thought Jordan would emerge the way he has but he has been excellent for us. We need to keep hold of these youngsters.

David’s had a lot to do with his development and Jordan gives David a lot of credit for his success. When you see that, that’s the way it’s supposed to work. That’s why some senior players stay at clubs. They find other ways to contribute.

“Steve is obviously still a top-line front player for us and hopefully he will be for another three or four years.

I want him to retire here but everybody gets older. And Aiden O’Brien and young Fred (Onyedinma) are the people he’s working on. That’s great that half his time is worrying about them and trying to help them play the position better.”

And witnessing first-hand all of the evidence of a new way of doing things feeds Berylson’s belief he has the right manager in place to lead the club’s revival.

“I brought in Neil and Dave

Brammer in January 2007,” Berylson recalled. “I think we ended up finishing thirteenth when we had been 20th. I got to know Neil and maybe a year later we became friendly. And he said to me: ‘I’m going to get my coaching badges and my aspiration one day is to manage this team.’ If you had told me he’d be ready at the age of 37 I’d probably have said that’s five or ten years too early. But it happened.

“And I always said to him: ‘Neil, if you’re around and I need a manager, I’ll be looking, don’t worry about it.’

“I like to bring people from the inside, they earn it and I think they deserve a shot. Now it’s worked out and I think he’s been absolutely brilliant. I like the way he manages, I like his philosophy. He is a Millwall person.

“Finally I’ve replaced Kenny Jackett. It took me years.”

Huge setback for Millwall as Wallace returns to Wolves

NEIL HARRIS was dealt a massive blow on Wednesday by his old boss Kenny Jackett, who has decided to exercise a recall clause in the Jed Wallace’s loan deal.

Wallace played his last game for the Lions in the 2-2 draw with Swindon last Saturday and he has

now returned to the Championship club.

The winger joined Millwall in January on a deal until April 9 and proved hugely popular with supporters with his energy, work rate and attacking intent during his fourteen-game spell in south London. He scored one goal for the club, in the 3-0 win against Blackpool on March 5.

With the emergency loan deadline on March 24 fast

approaching, Millwall are understood to be looking for alternative options.

Wolves are in twelfth place in the Championship, twelve points off the play-offs.

“We have watched Jed closely at Millwall, and he has enjoyed a very positive impact on the team with his performances,” Jackett told Wolves’ official website.

“At 21 years of age, we are now keen to get him back to Wolves

MILLWALL TOP scorer Lee Gregory insists he isn’t in competition with Steve Morison and only cares about the club winning promotion this season.

Gregory scored his 22nd goal of the campaign in the 2-2 draw at Swindon last weekend to move to within one goal of the total Morison got in 2009-10 when Millwall went up to the Championship through the play-offs.

But Gregory is more focused on three crucial upcoming games than on achieving any personal milestones.

“Me and Steve always say we don’t care how we win as long as we win,” Gregory said. “Stats? Don’t care about them.

“We want this promotion and how that comes I don’t care as long as we get there.

“With ten games left every game is massive. If we lose a couple of games in a row we’re out of the play-offs, it’s that close.

“We need to concentrate on Sheffield United on Saturday and after that we’ve got two massive games against Bradford and Burton on a SaturdayMonday which will be very tough.

“Hopefully we can get some points out of these three games and still be in the play-offs or maybe even higher.”

STEVE MORISON doesn’t want any excuses as the countdown begins in Millwall’s League One campaign.

The Lions have ten league games remaining and face Sheffield United this weekend hoping to boost their

promotion hopes by completing a double over Nigel Adkins’ side this season.

The Lions felt they were hard done by last weekend when referee Kevin Wright awarded a questionable penalty against Carlos Edwards to allow Swindon launch a comeback from two goals behind to deny the visitors all three points.

But Morison knows that Millwall’s

destiny is in their own hands ahead of the clash with the eleventh-placed Blades on Saturday.

“It’s an easy excuse when you’re losing games or stuff like that happens,” the current Lions captain said.

“I just thought it was a bit abnormal on Saturday for a game that didn’t seem too physical. To have seventeen fouls given against

you in one half and only four for and the penalty looking soft as well was a bit frustrating.

“From a forward’s point of view I felt we were marked very aggressively and I thought there were a lot of times where we definitely could have had fouls for us and they weren’t given.

“But we can’t dwell on it, can’t change it, so we crack on now.”
