FRIENDS of a much-loved Bermondsey “gentle giant” who passed away in May have started raising money to pay for a proper funeral, amid fears he will be receive a ‘pauper’s funeral’.

Meurig Gomer Wyn-Roberts, known as Gomer Roberts, was found dead above the Greyhound Pub, Peckham in May but the police and the Coroner’s Court have not found his next of kin.

Gomer’s body is now with Southwark Social Services and preparations are underway for a ‘pauper funeral’ unless a next of kin is found or the money is raised to pay for a proper burial.

Bermondsey spirit will give Gomer the farewell he deserves

G

OMER ROBERTS was a big presence, both physically, and in the community.

Although not a man to put himself forward as a figurehead for any local campaigns, he was nevertheless a person whom many people knew. He stood out due to his size, but to anyone who got closer, for his warmth and wit a true gentle giant.

He was always happy to give his time away, whether that was spending the day at the Blue Christmas Fair, handing out presents, dressed as Father Christmas, or acting as ‘bouncer’ at a free pensioners’ party, hosted by the News in Southwark Park.

His friends were shocked when he was found dead in his flat above The Greyhound pub in Peckham in May. Since then some of his friends, and the News, have been on a desperate search for any of his relatives, so that they could be told the tragic news, but also so that his funeral could be arranged.

Newspapers and websites in Gomer’s native country, Wales, have also joined in, with the story being shared online thousands of times.

Unfortunately, this search, although quite extensive, has proved fruitless.

So it is heartening to see that his friends, from landlords at his local pubs, to people he knew around the area, are not sitting back to let him have a local authority funeral.

In a demonstration of true Bermondsey spirit, money is being collected to pay for a ‘farewell funeral he deserves’.

So far around £1,000 of the £3,000 needed has been arranged already by The Old Bank pub in Southwark Park Road, even though it only started collecting on June 14.

Gomer was also friends with many at the News, so we hope that the money needed is soon raised, and that this big man is given a big final farewell.

Right decision from the Home Office

T

HE HOME Office has now made the right decision in allowing the Nigerian brother of Dulwich College caretaker Isaac Aganozor a visa, so he can take part in a potentially lifesaving bonemarrow transplant.

It originally denied the request, on the grounds he may not return home, but after pressure from Dulwich MP Helen Hayes and stories in the press, it has now accepted Isaac’s brother Patrick’s application.

Let’s hope Isaac’s transplant is a success.

BERMONDSEY’S KIRBY Estate is proudly flying dozens of England flags across their railings to show their support during Euro 2016.

Alan Putman, one of the organisers behind the flags, told the News how he spent hours putting them up on June 9 with Christopher Dowse.

“We started off with just a few flags about three or four years ago and when Chris saw them he said “right we’re getting more” and bought £50 worth.

“It’s great because it gets all the community together and the neighbours love it.

“We have people from all nationalities here and it’s no problem if they want to put up their own flags. People come here just to see them and take pictures. There must be at least 70 flags up with around 500 cable ties.

“We take them down once England gets kicked out. We would leave them up all year but the problem is they get dirty. Me and my missus wash each one when they come in before putting them away!”

Housed in a disused pub, The Bunyadi was created by Seb Lyall, who has gone for the “all natural” concept with the intention of it only being open for three months.

The first guests to venture in on June 10 were guided to a set of changing rooms, provided with a locker, and a fluffy dressing gown and white slippers.

Phones are abandoned for the duration and the light is reduced to the candles on each of the tables, which are fashioned from wooden blocks with seats shaped like tree stumps.

Waiters and waitresses have also committed to the cause, and all but what can be protected by tiny fleshcoloured underwear or a fresh piece of foliage are on show.

Some privacy is afforded once seated, as tables are arranged between separate booths, encircled with bamboo, to minimise crosstable ogling.

Guests have said the menu is light, consisting of rounds of raw food lots of vegetables, flowers, and pickled and smoked meat and fish, while half the offering is catered for vegans.

Food and wine is served in clay dishes and goblets. There is no cutlery besides sticks and edible spoon.

The Bunyadi’s head chef has said he hopes that being nude will help diners “concentrate” on their food and encourage them to “try new cuisines”. He adds that the experience of eating in its purest form, will offer guests “liberation”.

Council flies LGBT flag at half mast to remember Orlando club shooting victims

SOUTHWARK: Southwark Council flew the LGBT flag at half-mast to remember the 49 people who lost their lives in the Orlando club shooting on June 12.

In the early hours of Saturday morning Omar Mateen, who pledged allegiance to so-called Islamic State, entered a gay club in Florida and opened fire targeting the LGBT community.

Southwark Council also opened books of condolence in the reception of its Tooley Street office, in Canada Water Library and in Peckham Library for anyone who wanted to leave a message.

Councillor Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “The horrific attack in Orlando at the weekend has shocked the world, and Southwark sends its deepest sympathies to the victims and their families.

“This attack on a group of young people enjoying a night out, as with the Paris attacks, aims to drive fear into the hearts of people going about their everyday lives.

“It is also a despicable hate crime against the LGBT community. We must stand firm, celebrating our diverse community and uniting to condemn this awful act.”

Cyclist treated for head injury

BERMONDSEY: A female cyclist was hurt during a collision with a car on Reverdy Road, Bermondsey, during the evening rush hour on June 13.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) was called and an ambulance crew and a single responder attended the scene before calling the police at 5:40pm.

An LAS spokesperson told the News that they treated the woman at the scene for a head injury and took her to hospital.

School opens park in honour of former pupil killed in attack

REDRIFF PRIMARY SCHOOL officially opened a Rotherhithe park named after former pupil Tommy Blackmore on June 10 with singing and tributes to his memory.

The grand opening featured the school choir, poems written by the children and tributes from Tommy’s teachers.

Tommy’s brother, Bradley, said: “I’m overwhelmed. It was a great tribute and it brings a tear to the eye.

The park will be here longer than Tommy and it’s a good testament to who he was. It goes to show how much of an impact he had.

“All the kids will grow up knowing him. Maybe it will make kids in the

future think twice about taking a swing.”

Van flips outside pub after collision BERMONDSEY

A VAN flipped upside down and crashed into a bollard next to a Bermondsey pub on June 12 after a collision with a car on St James’s Road.

Drinkers inside the St James of Bermondsey pub were shocked as the scene developed at around 6:20pm.

Lisa Anderson, who has worked at the pub for five months, said that if it wasn’t

raining people would have been hit outside, and if the bollard weren’t there the van would have “come into the pub”.

She said: “Everyone was watching it.

Luckily it was raining and everyone was inside otherwise they would have been hit.

“If that bollard wasn’t there too it would have been a different story as it would have come into the pub.”

Police told the News that both drivers suffered only minor injuries and that no arrests were made.

“It’s sad that a year ago he had his bright future taken away but he was not a sad boy, he took from life as much as he could take. He loved and enjoyed life.

“This is his park and we are here to celebrate.”

A BERMONDSEY man has told how he saw women and children caught up in the Marseille Euro violence, and said that it was Millwall fans who ‘pushed the Russians away’.

Kevin Downey, known locally for running 27 marathons and raising thousands for charity, told the News he saw Russian football fans attack English people, not caring who they were.

At one point the Russians are said to have tried to attack a bar that had Millwall fans inside, who then ran out to clear them away.

Kevin said: “I just knew there was going to be trouble when it’s so close to England as everyone can get out there.

“All the youngsters were on the booze all day long but none of the Russians were drinking. There were 30 or 40 Russians walking around trying to attack the English and provoke them.

“I saw the tear gas and the police running in then they would move off.

It was only when they were attacked the police would go in. From the beginning we were in the middle of it but we moved away and got out of it.

“The fans were all enjoying themselves then the Russians came running in for them. They don’t care if you’re a woman or a child. They didn’t give a s**t who was in front of them.

“There was quite a few Millwall fans out there. They were saying they made the Russians run away. At one point one of the bars the Russians attacked had seven or eight Millwall supporters inside so they came out and pushed the Russians away. Some Millwall supporters got a few cuts and bruises.”

The violence in the French city of Marseille erupted before, during and after the group stage match between England and Russia on Saturday June 11.

Russian fans are said to have aggressively targeted innocent England fans around the city and in the stadium with violence.

The match ended up as a 1-1 draw, with Russia receiving a disqualification warning if the violence continued.

Council considers establishing own care homes EXCLUSIVE

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is considering a report’s recommendation to “seriously consider establishing our own council-owned Care Homes”.

The report ‘Time to Care: A future vision of care in Southwark’ was presented to the council’s cabinet meeting

on June 7 and urged the council to act on the growing care-home ‘crisis’.

Presented by councillor Rebecca Lury, chair of the Healthy Communities Scrutiny Sub-Committee, it said: “The Committee recommends that the council makes serious consideration of establishing our own council-owned care homes. We believe that with the resource that the council is currently having to put into our care homes, and the broader crisis in care homes and concerns over the viability of providers in the long-term, that

having council-owned services would allow the council to retain control and implement a service in such a way as to provide excellence of care for our residents.” The cabinet resolved to note the recommendations and for the cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion to bring back a report by September this year in response.

Southwark has been undergoing a carehome ‘crisis’ since last year as the council placed an embargo on three homes preventing elderly people being placed in

The embargo came as the Care Quality Commission rated Burgess Park care home as “inadequate” and placed the Four Seasons care home, Picton Street and Tower Bridge care home in special measures. spokesperson for Adult Social Care, said: “The Liberal Democrats think this is an interesting idea that deserves looking into.

“So far though there has been no discussion about how it would be paid for and whether it has been tried and tested in other areas. The council’s adult care budget is under real pressure and things are only set to get worse. Given recent events in Southwark care homes though it’s clear that there need to be big improvements in how we take care of our elderly.”

Publicans across Bermondsey and Peckham are now said to be organising themselves to claim Gomer’s body and raise the money needed.

The Old Bank Pub in Bermondsey started collecting money on June 14 and have so far raised around £1,000 of the £3,000 needed.

Michelle Crawford, of the Old Bank pub, said: “We would like to thank all these people for their cash donations.

“Gomer was the gentle giant of Bermondsey and was well known for his charity work.

“Any extra money we raise we’ll donate to a children’s charity because he loved helping kids.

“Everyone at The Old Bank, the good people in Bermondsey and everyone that knew him would like to give him the farewell funeral he deserves.”

FIVE KITTENS and their mother have been rescued after they were found living in the engine of an abandoned van on the Ayelsbury Estate.

Rescue workers from the Celia Hammond Animal Trust were called out to the estate last week when residents spotted kittens climbing inside the engine.

Concerned for the safety of the kittens if the van was driven away, staff immediately attended the scene. “They were living between an old discarded mattress in a disused bin cupboard, and the engine of an old van parked next to it,” said Naomi Sheen, Homing Coordinator at Celia Hammond’s Lewisham branch.

“The mother cat – now named Ella – was very protective of her kittens and didn’t want anyone coming too close, and tried to warn our staff to keep away. It took almost four hours but the family were safely captured and brought back to the rescue centre.”

Ella had been catching pigeons to feed her seven-month-old brood, said Naomi, and despite their beginnings they were in fairly good health. “They were all very pleased to tuck into a bowl of cat food though!” said Naomi.

Alfred Salter Primary School will host a raffle night with a big cake sale as part of their dance festival, to help support the campaign to get Ruby Longman an eyegaze computer.

Ruby, ten, suffers from the rare Rett syndrome, which has prevented her from walking and talking since she was a baby and her family hope they will soon be able to communicate with her.

More than half of the £10,000 needed for the computer has been raised so far through the community, but a final push is needed to see the target met.

Stuart Hayter, Ruby’s headteacher, said: “The fundraiser is going to take place during our dance festival.

There’s going to be a raffle and a group of parents have been going around getting lots of good prizes.

“We’ll also have a big cake sale at the end of the day. Individual children have been arranging their own fundraising, trying to get the message across that without this piece of equipment Ruby can’t tell her mother that she loves her.”

Children in the school have written poems and drawn posters for Ruby to show their support during the campaign.

Timi Samples, Ruby’s mum, said: “The children made me cry when they read some of their poems to me.

They all call Ruby a silent angel.

“They are all really excited and keep saying ‘we can’t wait to hear Ruby talk’. It’s so nice that the children adore her. They are so lovely.

“They wait for her in the mornings and if she hasn’t been in for a while asks how she’s doing.”

PECKHAM RESIDENTS are breathing a sigh of relief after plans to build houses in a narrow alleyway behind their gardens were withdrawn for modification.

Emerson Property Ltd applied in May to build four houses in a yard hidden between Hollydale Road and Stanbury Road, occupied by Stanbury Building Services Ltd. The application was withdrawn by the developers on June 8, much to the surprise of residents who had put together two petitions and submitted objections on Southwark Council’s

website.

But Alex Stone of Emerson Properties has told the News the plans were withdrawn so the company could modify the current proposals “in response to comments received from our neighbours”. “[And] carry out additional ecological surveys requested by the local authority that require time to complete thoroughly,” Alex said.

Hollydale Road resident, Angela Dapice, said: “I took a petition round all the houses up here. I’m glad they have withdrawn. Now let’s see what else they try.”

A previous attempt to build three flats and three houses was refused by the council three years ago due to the lack of

space, light and “overbearing” impact it would have on neighbours.

“Because the council rejected the last one, we all honestly thought they would let it through. If it does it will be a bloody nightmare,” Angela said.

Kevin Rose, who has lived in Hollydale Road for eleven years, said the houses would have been right behind his house. Kevin said: “The thing for me was the extra problems with parking it would cause. We live next to Hollydale Primary School and we get staff from the

council office parking here, plus people who park and use the underground on Queen’s Road.”

A young Hollydale Road couple told the News they objected, despite “not wanting to be NIMBYies”, but because they loved seeing a family of foxes who live in the builders’ yard and because bats live there.

Alex Stone of Emerson Properties said: “The existing builders’ yard has been in a dilapidated state for many years. We, with our architects, wish to transform an

uncared for resource into quality family homes.

“The current proposal comprises four contemporary detached dwellings using less site area than the existing buildings, with landscaped gardens and planted roof areas, carefully designed to avoid overlooking of existing neighbours.

“As part of the planning process we have consulted the local community, and in response to all comments received we have decided to modify the current proposals.”

Visa granted to man who could save brother’s life with transplant

THE NIGERIAN brother of an ill Dulwich College caretaker has had his visa approved by the Home Office, after they originally denied him entry to the UK to give a lifesaving bone marrow transplant.

Isaac Aganozor, 44, of Sydenham Hill, suffers from leukaemia and was told by Bart’s Hospital, Smithfield that his brother, Patrick, is a match for a vital bone marrow transplant.

But Patrick’s visa application was originally denied on economic grounds as the Home Office wasn’t convinced he would return home after the transplant.

The refusal sparked outrage and Helen Hayes, the Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, and Dulwich College mounted pressure on the Home Office to reconsider.

The Home Office has now accepted Patrick’s application and he will be with

Isaac on June 18, with flights paid for by Dulwich College and preparation for a transplant starting as soon as possible.

Isaac told the News: “The Home Office has decided to grant him [Patrick] permission to come to the UK and he will be here on the weekend.

“I am very happy. The Home Office has decided to show compassion for me and I am very grateful.”

The Home Office’s decision to grant Patrick permission came after an immigration lawyer was hired by Isaac’s employer and MP Helen raised his case with ministers. Ms Hayes said: “I am extremely relieved that the Home Office has shown flexibility and compassion in relation to Patrick Aganozor who can now come to the UK to act as a bone marrow donor for his brother Isaac.

“The review of their decision is an excellent outcome. I wish Isaac and Patrick all the very best for a successful stem cell transplant and a swift recovery for Isaac.”

Police appeal after assault in Borough pub

POLICE ARE appealing for information about an unprovoked assault that left a man with facial injuries in a Slug and Lettuce pub on March 12.

At around 8:40pm police were called to the pub on Borough High Street and found an injured 28-year-old man.

The victim was taken to hospital where they received several stitches to a wound above their left eyebrow.

The suspect is described as a white man, 6ft 5ins tall and of an athletic build.

He had short light coloured hair, which was gelled, a short beard or stubble and he was wearing a dark coloured jacket and jeans. Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The feature-length film tells the story of LGBT rights in the Ukraine, and the gay community’s involvement in the country’s 2014 revolution.

On Tuesday June 22 the pub will feature a cabaret night with original gay cabaret songs from 1972. Thursday night will be a gay history and culture quiz night for £2 entry.

Entertainer Peter Scott-Presland said: “We want this to be a community event for LGBT people of all ages to enjoy. If you’re gay and you turn 40 you basically become invisible. A lot of older gay people become isolated. There needs to be more things going on for them locally.” Charity collections will also be held at the three events to help support families of the victims in the Pulse nightclub shooting, that took place in Orlando on Sunday morning. Peter said: “I realise that this is a small gesture in the face of such overwhelming tragedy, but even small gestures of international support can be a comfort.

They also show that LGBT people worldwide will not be intimidated in the face of such attacks. We need to make the continuous connection that terrorists are homophobes, and not obliterate the homophobic element in the terrorist/ISIL narrative.”

Lib Dems hold Surrey Docks ward

ROTHERHITHE: The Liberal Democrats decisively held the Surrey Docks ward in the Southwark Council by-election on June 9 with more than half the vote.

Dan Whitehead, a solicitor, received 51.75 per cent of the votes cast in a 29.91 per cent turnout.

Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrat Council Group, said: "With a 30-year track record of action, residents have once again trusted the Liberal Democrats in Surrey Docks ward and we will always fight their corner.

THE MOTHER of a young terminally-ill girl has said her child enjoyed a “life-changing” experience when she met her hero – Star Wars star John Boyega.

The BAFTA-winning actor took a brief break from filming Star Wars Episode VIII to pay a visit to the Demelza Hospice, which looks after children from south east London, on June 13.

John, who was born in Camberwell and realised his acting talent at Peckham Theatre, said he wanted to help make the children’s dreams come true.

“I’d heard about the great work of Demelza so couldn’t wait to visit and help make some dreams come true,” he said. “I was blown away by the children and the nurses who do such a fantastic job of caring for them. South east London is extremely fortunate to have such an amazing charity on its doorstep, ensuring families get the support they need. I just hope people will continue to do what they can to support this great cause.”

Many of the children dressed as Star Wars characters for the occasion. Fouryear-old Eshan, who suffers with a rare form of rickets, did his best Boyega impression whilst dressed as his character – the stormtrooper Fin. His mum, Shara, said: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Eshan so excited – it’s made his day.

“It’s been a very tough year so to see him so happy is absolutely wonderful. Days like today make our time here even more special.”

THE VICAR of St Peter’s Church in Walworth has launched a petition calling for a bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.

Father Andrew Moughtin-Mumby of St Peter’s Church in Liverpool Grove launched the online petition in May, urging the government to plan a national bank holiday for Her Majesty’s birthday.

“It struck me that around the whole world, British embassies are closing for the day,” Father Andrew said.

“Her birthday is on June 10 officially.

But what I’m asking for is a bank holiday to happen at some point during the 90th year of her life, before June 2017.

“Funnily enough there’s already a petition out there online but it hasn’t done very well. But I’m calling for one that’s at a more flexible time, as long as it happens before the end of the year.”

Father Andrew has taken the lead in hosting big neighbourhood parties in Walworth. He and his colleagues organised the annual Party in the Park to celebrate the Royal Wedding in 2011, and has continued in Faraday Gardens ever since.

He added: “Events like this are one of

the things that communities like ours that genuinely brings people together.

“People from all over the world live in this area and it’s nice for people to all have a shared sense of identity.”

The petition has so far been signed by 140 people, which Father Andrew says includes friends and colleagues and people from Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Ex nurse Pam, 86, returns to new heights at Guy’s

AN 86-YEAR-OLD grandmother abseiled down Guy’s Cancer Centre on June 4 to raise more than £1,000 for state-of-the-art patient facilities.

Pam Miller trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital from 1948 to 1952, where her grandson was born, and was one of 95 daredevils to descended 150 feet.

A total of £35,000 in sponsorship was raised and will be spent on providing Guy’s and St Thomas’ cancer patients with the best support possible.

Pam, who lives in Walsingham, Norfolk, said: “I was determined to do my bit to support the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital. I’ve always loved Guy’s and it sounds like a brilliant project, putting cancer services under one roof with state-of-the-art facilities.

“The abseil was good fun and I really enjoyed it. I was never scared at all. My family were there to support me and as I abseiled down the building I could hear them all shouting ‘Go Grandma go!’”

Campaign starts to save Rye Lane’s Crown post office

A CAMPAIGN to save the Crown Post Office in Rye Lane has been set up by councillors and residents.

The Post Office told the News in March it would need to abandon its premises because the landlord of its building had planned to convert its first floor into flats.

But campaigners have learnt that the Post Office intends to close its branch, despite previous suggestions it could be saved if a new, big enough site was found.

Lane ward councillor Nick Dolezal said: “People are really angry. The Post Office are seemingly reneging on their previous position, where it looked like we were going to continue having a Crown Post Office.

“The consultation period is over but local people will be collecting signatures and going to social media to make their voices heard. We will also be trying to involve the Secretary of State for Business and Innovation [Sajid Javid]. People deserve a Crown Post Office that can provide confidential, secure services.”

The Post Office has told the News that it would have to close because developers Allview Estates Ltd’s building works would take one year. They said being closed for this period of time would make the Post Office branch “unviable”.

Nick, who is also a member of the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) said the problem could have been

remedied by Southwark Council’s offer to help them find a temporary premises.

“The Post Office were encouraged to look for sites within the community and they have not done so. We believe it was a red herring,” Nick said. “Southwark Council said it would be willing to discuss with them what other properties could be suitable. The council have also suggested a temporary site if need be. Everyone was led to believe they had the intention of returning to the site, but they have said they are now going to withdraw.”

The News approached the Post Office for a response. A spokeswoman for the Post Office was only able to confirm it would close in August, and did not address the point that it did not appear to have sought help with finding a temporary space, which would allow them to move back to Rye Lane. She said: “The developer’s proposition put to the Post Office meant we would have to vacate the site for a year and that is not commercially viable for us (in addition the plan put to us regarding the new development was not suitable). We are therefore closing the Post Office because we are being evicted. As a result we’ve carefully considered our provision in the area and we believe the surrounding area has enough Post Office service provision to meet demand. But we did explore (and advertised for) potential interest for a retailer in the area to consider running a Local Post Office branch (a smaller branch) but no suitable potential partner has come forward.”

Footie fan converts Robin Reliant into boot in honour of Euro 2016

A FOOTBALL mad car obsessive has turned an old Robin Reliant into a giant football boot in honour of the Euros and plans to auction it off, giving the proceeds to a kids’ football charity.

Nathan Whitfield, 26, is a modelmaker and street artist from Blackfriars, who tinkers with cars in his spare time at his workshop off the Old Kent Road. He unveiled his ‘Bootmobile’ at Tower Bridge last week: an over-sized three-wheel football boot in England colours, featuring giant laces and super-size studs.

He approached Ladbrokes for help with funding as he thought that “they might have a similar sense of humour”, and the colour palette matched the England football strip. Nathan received a three-figure sum from the gambling firm.

As well as the ‘Bootmobile’ Nathan has created a ‘Bootman’ outfit, with a ‘Bootility Belt’ featuring all the essentials for a good football match: a vuvuzela, an integral pasty-holder, a whistle, and red and yellow cards.

“As a kid, my two obsessions were Playmobile and Action Man, so I guess the Bootmobile and my new outfit combine my two passions,” said

Nathan. “My workshop’s near Peckham, so part of the inspiration was Del Boy’s van in Only Fools and Horses.”

At the end of the Euros tournament, Nathan and Ladbrokes will hold a 'Car Boot Sale' – an online auction of the ‘Bootmobile’ to raise funds for a kids’ football charity.

The truth about diabetes

SOUTHWARK GPS and nurses are encouraging local people to find out the truth about diabetes and what it’s like to live with the condition during Diabetes Awareness Week, which runs from 12-18 June.

Over 14,000 adults have diabetes in Southwark – that’s around 6% of the population.

Around ten per cent of these have Type 1 Diabetes (also known as juvenile onset or insulindependent diabetes), meaning that the vast majority of diagnoses are for Type 2 Diabetes – a condition normally associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity or lack of exercise.

“Diabetes has been grabbing the headlines for some time, due to the huge increase in the number

of people diagnosed with the condition in recent years” says Linda Drake, Practice Nurse and Clinical Lead for diabetes for NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). “As a result, we often read conflicting stories about diabetes, what causes it and what it’s like to live with the condition.

“It’s important that people have access to the right information about diabetes, such as the signs and symptoms of the condition, what you can do to lower your risk, and also the help and support available locally to help you get on with life.”

Healthier you: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme South London Southwark residents will be some of the first in the country to be offered places on the world’s first evidence based behavioural programme to help them avoid developing Type 2 diabetes.

People suitable for the Healthier You – NHS Diabetes Prevention

Programme South London, will be identified via the NHS Health Checks programme or their GP practice.

Referrals will begin this summer and those who join the programme will get tailored, personalised help, including education on healthy eating and lifestyle, help to lose weight and bespoke physical exercise programmes, all of which together have been proven to reduce the risk of developing the condition.

Local support Diabetes UK hosts a number of support groups across London and the south east. The groups are run by volunteers and meet regularly, providing a forum for patients, carers or those with a

special interest in diabetes to get together, share experiences and learn more about the condition.

We’re a stronger Britain staying in Europe

ITH ONE week to go until we head to the polls on 23rd June, to vote on whether to stay in or leave the European Union, it’s clear that many people still haven’t made up their minds.

I strongly believe that it is in Britain’s national interest that we remain at the heart of the European Union. Labour is the party that hates inequality, unemployment and unfairness and loves the NHS and opportunities for all and Labour wants us to stay in the EU. Because we’re in the EU, businesses in this country can attract investment which creates jobs – over half a million jobs in London depend on our membership of the European Union.

Because we’re in the EU, we can sell what we make, and our services, in every EU country – a marketplace of 500 million people.

Because we’re in the EU, people have better rights at work. The EU guarantees the right to paid holiday, paid maternity leave and rights for parttimers. It’s the EU that made our governments pass those laws and so long as we remain a member no Tory government can try and take them away.

If we left the EU, there would be a risk to jobs and to rights at work. We need better rights at work, not to be fighting to keep those that we already have.

I’m not going to be put off by people calling it “Project Fear”. I am fearful about jobs and rights. Even the leaders of the Leave campaign say that they can’t guarantee that people wouldn’t lose their jobs if we left. We should not be putting jobs at risk.

The leaders of the Leave campaign have never fought for you. They are the people that brought in the Bedroom Tax and have cut our NHS and council services. They want to scrap business regulations, get rid of the “social chapter”. What they really mean is getting rid of your right to paid holiday, maternity leave and paternity pay.

Immigration is a big issue, but there’s more immigration from outside the EU than people coming from other EU countries. If you’re worried about the NHS, or about housing – don’t blame immigrants. It’s the responsibility of Government to support the NHS and to build enough houses. Leaving the EU would make things worse by hitting the economy.

Labour wants us to stay in the EU for jobs, workers’ rights, to improve living standards and make sure we have enough public money to pay for vital services. I hope you’ll join me in voting to remain in the EU on 23rd June.

Dulwich Hamlet won’t survive without current development proposal

I REFER to the letter from Jonathan Hunt (Southwark News 26th May) and cannot let his comments pass, particularly as I can see that they were indirectly aimed at me.

Firstly, these are my personal opinions and not necessarily the view of Dulwich Hamlet FC, the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters' Trust, the club's owners or the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee.

In terms of Jonathan's recollection of events in 1999, it is correct to say that the officials at the time predicted the death of Dulwich Hamlet FC without a new stadium and there can be no doubt that with a 20,000 capacity stadium deemed unfit to hold more than 500 fans then that would have been a reality. However, what the club got at the end of that process was a stadium not fit for future purpose and with numerous faults from day one.

In terms of the Homebase development, I believe that I can be quoted as saying that without it then Dulwich Hamlet FC would die; I wasn't wrong. Without Hadley's involvement, the club would have very quickly closed, as it was unable to pay its bills at the time that they acquired the site. There were a number of meetings with the Supporters' Trust at the time from which it was clear the club was unable to pay essential utility bills; in fact, I am sure Jonathan was in those meetings in his role with the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust. For that reason, I find it strange that he feels that the imminent demise of the club was overstated. In addition, Jonathan’s previous role with the Trust will have made him aware that Hadley have expressed every intention to return the club to its supporters debtfree following any development and so there will be no need for the club to be "waiting for another White Knight with dark dreams of huge profits".

As I stated previously, the club’s location will always be attractive to property developers and, if it happens, the next party may not have the club's interests at heart. Without the development, it is likely that there will continue to be a need for "White Knights with dark dreams" to fund the

club going forward. This proposed development gives "a wholly different form of ownership"; namely the supporters of the club in a structure that would not allow any individual to own (and asset strip) the Club.

I also feel it important to add here that the proposals are not to develop on Green Dale, but rather are to ONLY redevelop on the existing all weather pitch and boundary enclosure. The FOGD group are, unfortunately, misinterpreting this point for their own crusade. Further, there are many examples of sporting developments on MOL, including Saracens Rugby Club (Allianz Park) and Kent County Cricket Club (The County Ground), and these are much-loved, community assets!

I would be very happy to go forward in "a much-improved Champion Hill stadium" if that were possible on the current site; but, to be frank, it isn't. To make the stadium fit for purpose (and any business model viable) there would need to be many hundreds of thousands spent just to stand still. I would venture that to make the stadium better it would require the following just for starters: installation of a 3G pitch, new floodlights, terracing to be put in on 3 sides, cover on at least 2 sides, a complete refurbishment of the main stand with all new seating, and maybe even the main stand to be demolished and a new stand and bar facilities built. I am open to suggestions as to where the funds to do that would come from, but suspect that if they did it would come from a "White Knight" just like the others that have previously owned the club and saddled it with debt.

Not the first time rail arches eyed for homes IT WAS most interesting to see that some tenants of railway arches in the borough were planning to convert them into homes and that the council were taking steps to stop this from happening (News, June 9th).

It would not be the first time that the arches had been used for this purpose as the London and Greenwich Railway, the first railway in London, had planned to make use of many arches in this way, in particular to re-house the

occupants of homes which were demolished to make way for its approach and terminus at London Bridge. In fact the first few arches to be let in 1834, two years before the railway was opened, were used for a pub, the Halfway House situated on Rotherhithe New Road and this stayed open until the early 1960s. The last remains of this can still be seen in ’Jarrow Road’, although these may disappear very soon as re-development works now seem to be taking place along this section of viaduct. To return to the houses, the railway company did in fact built three house in the viaduct close to Deptford Station and these were quite innovative, having gas lighting, heating and cooking facilities provided by the company’s own gas works. The gas being a by-product of the conversion of coal into coke, as the earliest locomotives were all cokefired.

Incidentally the top of the railway viaduct was also gas-lit all the way from London Bridge to Greenwich for around a year as the ‘well to do’ used it for joy riding until the novelty wore off.

It must have been quite an impressive site crossing the mostly open fields of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe and between the small towns of Deptford and Greenwich. The houses however were not a success, as the original tracks were laid on stone blocks rather than wooden sleepers which caused considerable noise and vibration and very little provision had been for drainage from the track-bed, so rain water gradually filtered through to the interior of the arches. However, at least one tenant lingered on for some considerable time resisting all efforts to move him, as apparently he was deaf and could not hear the noise.

Although Railtrack’s property company have used many innovative techniques to modernise the railway arches in the recent past, including using plastic sheeting to divert away leaking water, I do not think that they have completely removed the dampness found within them and although they might be satisfactory for business uses, I do think that they would ever be healthy enough for residential accommodation unless they installed a completely sealed waterproof lining, but then, there is still the problem of the noise and vibration.

Why are graves being sold off as ‘new’ plots?

TO MANY, burial over the dead is abhorrent, either for religious or personal reasons.

What look like ‘new’ burial plots along Woodvale in Camberwell Old Cemetery are in fact over the graves of tens of thousands of Southwark’s poor. But Southwark is refusing to tell people.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, who led the Heygate Estate sell-off, is now Cabinet Member responsible for Southwark’s cemeteries, selling off the graves of thousands of dead poor as ‘new’ private graves.

Southwark’s social cleansing programme doesn’t stop at the living.

Last week, we wrote to Cllr Wingfield to demand Southwark’s website publish that these ‘new’ burial plots are in fact over the dead.

Cllr Wingfield ignored the request.

He said it was ‘up to Funeral Directors’ to inform families and, if families happen to ask cemetery staff, they are told it is ‘reclaimed’ land.

But Funeral Directors have a financial vested interest. And ‘reclaimed’ land can mean anything.

We are appalled by Cllr Wingfield’s contempt for people’s religious and personal needs.

Why is Southwark Council refusing to tell people what they are up to? Because they know many wouldn't buy the plots.

But this is not just a local issue.

The multi-billion pound burial industry wants to mound over and even dig up the dead in all UK cemeteries for profit. Southwark is a national test case.

But Southwark’s cemetery strategy is fatally flawed. Their destruction of woods, graves, memorials, nature and history must stop.

Please let people know that ‘new’ burial plots being sold in Camberwell Cemetery are over the dead.

Kickstart for Peckham pair

PECKHAM’S PROFILE has never been more prominent, but the true Peckham community is rarely reflected in media coverage, which usually depicts SE15 as either inner-city crime spot or hipster haven, writes Michael Holland...

For the past two years, local author-photographers Anna Green and Alice Malik have been taking photographs and listening to the stories of 50 enterprising and independent Peckham traders.

In a chain linked together by the traders themselves, they were referred from one Peckham business to another. The rule was, they only went where they were sent. The result is a fascinating series of vignettes that tell a story of the diversity of enterprise in Peckham at a pivotal moment in its evolution.

Remembering one mission in the creating of the book, Alice says, “It took us months to track down Eric, the owner of the Makeover hair salon. We had become familiar faces amongst the stylists, dropping in whenever we were passing. Then

The campaign runs until the launch of the book on 30th June.

o one captures the quintessence of London as Rotherhithe artist Ed Gray does, and an upcoming exhibition - Londonessence: Dust and Shadows - will show an exemplary selection of his London works along with the much-anticipated new painting, ‘The Adoration of Thomas A Becket’ Old Kent Road, that shows that ancient thoroughfare in all its cheapeston-the-Monopoly-board glory, writes Michael Holland...

All walks of life can be seen here in a moment in time that seems on the move rather than frozen on canvas.

The painting is full of allegorical imagery- footprints, shells and bones, all symbols of pilgrimage and migration. There are hidden secrets in the artwork that the artist let me into: shards of glass, and knives and blades that were, ultimately, the end of Thomas of Becket, and, perhaps, a catalyst for the non-renewal of the pub’s licence in more recent times. Gray explained how and why shells became symbols of the pilgrims, but, as the artist says, ‘Ultimately this is just a painting of the people I saw on a street in London. It’s a celebration of the people of the city, past and present.’

The firefighter whose WWI death saw women mourning in the streets Lance Corporal Oliver Smith died after receiving shrapnel wound to the head

HE ROSE through the ranks of what was the London Metropolitan Fire Brigade, and became a Lance Corporal in the beginning of the World War One campaign.

The memory of Lance Corporal Oliver John Smith, born in Thanet, Kent, and who settled and married in Southwark, will be overshadowed by the shock that his home town felt after learning his fate.

Oliver Smith, pictured here in his Metropolitan Fire Brigade uniform was killed aged 28, days after suffering a head wound from shrapnel in the English retreat from north-east France.

He was struck during the battle of La Bassee, on the road from Bethune to Armentieres. Despite the injury, he made it back to England, and it was hoped he would recover at the third

London General Hospital in Wandsworth.

Sadly, Oliver succumbed to his wounds on January 7, 1915. It was only after a short time in the conflict for him, and he left behind his wife of four years, Emma Grace Wrench, whom he had met in Camberwell, and his son John Oliver Smith.

His death came as a tremendous shock to the women of Thanet, for whom he was the first of their men who they witnessed return from war.

He was the first WW1 soldier to be buried in Ramsgate. His funeral procession was recorded in the Thanet Times, with descriptions of mourning and stunned women lining the high street. The prevailing expectation at the time was most husbands and sons would be likely to return victorious and in great numbers.

Lance Corporal Smith’s career as an old fire officer in Southwark Bridge Road, and his short career as a soldier,

have been pieced together by Graham Jansen.

Graham, who is 51 and works for the Ministry of Justice Police, said he came across the photo of Lance Corporal Oliver Smith thanks to a colleague at work, John Brunsden, who lives in Bromley.

He said: “We didn’t know his name was on the photo to begin with, but we found his initials with Smith on the back, hidden under the picture frame.

From there I managed to locate him by putting his initials into the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

“From there I have found out that he served with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.

“That might sounds surprising for him to be put in a Yorkshire regiment, but I think at the time there were barracks in Thanet that regiments from all over the country would have visited before crossing the Channel.

“I think it was at the stage of the war when you were put in whatever regiment you were given.”

Indeed, in the lead up to Britain’s European campaign, many of the young countrymen who signed up did so on the promise that they would stay with their companions, and their regiments would be founded on their towns or cities – going shoulder to shoulder with their neighbours.

It is for this reason that Graham wonders whether the Lance Corporal had joined later on in the war, and whether or not he had been conscripted or volunteered. It seems unlikely that a man of his decorated position in the London Metropolitan Fire Brigade to made to serve, but Graham has been unable to confirm form the records he has discovered so far.

s John the Unicorn’s waiter recommended the pigs’ ears and skewered chicken hearts I half-expected to find Heston Blumenthal peppering parrots in the kitchen, writes Alex Yeates…

After reassurances that we were in safe hands, we settled down to two cocktails and a glorious bar snack spread of said pigs’ ears (which tasted of crackling), chorizo battered sausage, herbed fried chips and a burger of aged ribcap. After repeated explosions of flavour our sense of adventure took hold and we eyed up the sharing plates.

Born in February this year, John the Unicorn occupies a spacious Peckham building with a vibrant bar downstairs and a cosy restaurant upstairs. While the hustle and bustle of the bar grew throughout the evening the intimate atmosphere where we ate remained firmly intact.

Boasting a unique menu, each dish sounded exotic but avoided the danger of being pretentious. After getting over the initial shock of eating a tender skewered chicken heart and a moreish charred octopus chaser, the flavour was savoured and a familiarity developed toward the food as if it were our own. But much better.

Our waiters Alex and George suggested three or four sharing plates each to get a wholesome experience and we willingly obliged.

Complemented by a bottle of France’s Vieille Grange Sauvignon Blanc, our main course of beef dripping focaccia with yeasted butter, smoked haddock arancini (which you could happily dislocate your jaw eating whole), new season asparagus, pork shoulder, pan roasted guinea fowl and the famous chicken hearts and octopus went down a treat.

The idea of mixing dishes and their contrasting tastes was a concern at first as the food arrived in waves, but as each dish was eaten it stood out how carefully minded the menu was.

Whichever way you structured your meal, each course had the right balance of spices and seasonings to ensure none overpowered the other but with no chance of either being underwhelming.

Feeling full, proud and cultured at having conquered an adventurous meal, our attention was turned to the

As the candlelight flickered under our heavy breath, our eyes grew even bigger than our stomachs at the thought of a Unicorn sundae with chocolate cake. Belts unbuckled the order was placed and the sweet end to the evening arrived.

The ice cream smothered in a

generous helping of marshmallows was the perfect way to end an overall brilliant and tasty experience. Dining at John the Unicorn was a pleasure with attentive staff and welcoming décor. My guest’s nut allergy could have posed a problem for any restaurant but at John’s it was no

problem as they go out of their way to avoid the use of ingredients that would adversely affect a customer’s experience.

As word of the restaurant with its glorious menu spreads I have no doubt in my mind that it will be the toast of Peckham.

The SGTO is a borough wide community organisation that supports tenants and residents in Southwark. The post holder will need to have an in-depth knowledge of social housing issues.

You will need excellent communication, literacy skills including good IT skills. You will need to demonstrate the ability to support existing Tenants and Resident Association (T&RA) in achieving their aims by providing practical resources and advice. The post holder will be responsible for supporting Tenants and Residents in setting up new groups and associations.

You will have to demonstrate skills of Community Engagement and Capacity Building.

The post also includes working with Tenants & Resident’s Associations to increase the involvement of all their members by producing their own information leaflets and newsletters through training and community development support. You will attend late night and weekend meetings on a regular basis and ensure that groups adhere to the recognition criteria and follow good practice, and be aware of information and resources available to them in order to achieve their aims.

The SGTO is a voluntary group funded through the Tenants and Residents Movement via the local authority.

4. The prohibition will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibitions are in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs via Green Walk, Alice Street or reverse to normal route of travel.

Southwark Council is preparing a new plan for the Old Kent Road and surrounding area. The plan will guide and manage new development and growth in the area over the next 20 years. The plan aims to create a new high street environment for the Old Kent Road, with significant public transport improvements supported by mixed use development behind the road. This will incorporate around 20,000 new homes, including affordable homes, new jobs, community facilities and green spaces. The plan includes the potential for extending the Bakerloo Line from Elephant and Castle towards Lewisham with two new stations along the Old Kent Road. The plan will be used to make planning decisions in the area and to coordinate and deliver the regeneration strategy.

THE MONTH of May saw many of the swimmers at Southwark Aquatics Swimming Club attend the Atlantis Spring Open Meet.

For some, the trip to Horsham would be their very first and their impressive medal haul made sure it would be an event to remember.

Along with seven gold medals, the club took away 11 silver medals, nine bronze, nine fourth-placed ribbons, seven fifth-placed ribbons and six sixthplaced ribbons. As well as the impressive haul, 52 personal best times were set.

A spokesperson for the Aquatics Club said: “This is testament to the swimmers hard work, determination and great attitude.”

Southwark Aquatics is a local competitive swimming club for ages 9 and upwards, including Masters.

EX-LYNN ABC boxer Charlie Driscoll made his professional

boxing debut last Thursday.

'Champagne Charlie' defeated Newark's Fonz Alexander on points over four rounds in the light-welterweight clash – the South Ockendon man won 40-35 in

the bout at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Eldest son of top grade ex-pro Mickey Driscoll, the 22 year old was a five time national junior titlist and regular England representative, prior to penning a pro deal

with promoter Frank Warren in January 2016.

Bancroft fell soon after the resumption without adding to his 43, but this brought in Naeem Iqbal, who proceeded to flay the Purley bowling to all parts, scoring 39 off just 17 balls with four sixes. He was out in the 38th over, and was followed in the next over by Towner, whose impressive 69 had come off just 86 balls. Two wickets fell in the last over as Jon Lodwick and Salaar Waqar both sacrificed themselves in going for ambitious second and third runs respectively. Four wickets had gone down in eleven balls but Leon Sealy and Levi Olver saw the innings to its conclusion without further mishap.

The last 8.2 overs had yielded 77 runs, to lift the Dulwich total to 2137 after their 40 overs.

With just 30 overs to bat, Purley

needed to score at 7.13 per over for victory, or more realistically 5.33 to achieve 160 for a winning draw.

Dulwich maintained attacking fields throughout, which enabled the batsmen to score at a steady rate but also had fielders in position for any edges or mishits that might come.

And come they did! Iqbal took the first wicket, caught by keeper Bancroft, off only the third ball, and Kamran Munawar had the other opener well caught by skipper Alex Gledhill above his head in the second over. The innings was now led by Trinidadian OP Jason Batson, in stands of 28 for the third wicket and 24 for the fourth, but an excellent spell of 3-25 in seven overs by Lodwick destroyed the middle order.

Scott, caught by Savill at second slip.

When Batson became Lodwick’s third wicket to make it 67-6 after 14 overs, there seemed to be nothing left for Purley but to bat out time, but the tail didn’t see it that way and indulged in a weird mixture of defence and attack. Olver was the beneficiary as he induced catches to midwicket (Gledhill), second slip (a superb low catch by Savill) and long off (Sealy), before finishing the innings by having the last man lbw.

He had taken 4-9 off just 3.3 overs.

Purley had been bowled out in 22.3 overs for 99.

This was Dulwich’s fourth win in six matches, but the two teams above them also won, so they remain in third place. Next week they will have their third consecutive home match, against Chessington who are currently in seventh place.

THE KENNINGTON Generals booked their place in the Community Basketball League U18 play-off final on June 26 thanks to a 49-29 win over Brent Ballers.

Coach Jay Williams’ men were without Tremont Deigh against an experienced and well drilled Baller’s side.

Andrew Lopez had been on form for the generals for the majority of the season with Ryan Del Reyes hitting form at the right time as he continued to impress with his passing and ability to score rebounds.

The Generals started well and started to dominate within the first five minutes to take a stranglehold on proceedings.

Darnel Sharpe-Kelly was voted Most Valuable Player in the game thanks to his expert defensive work and his offensive contribution.

“We’ve worked hard and deserve to be in the Final,” MVP SharpeKelly said. “Basketball means a lot to us and it has been the sport that has helped us improve as players, on and off the court.

“It would mean the world for us to win this season and so we will go into the game with the same mentality that we had today in order to bring home the chip!”

Proud Coach Williams, added: "I am really proud of how they all remained focused and followed the instructions. It was a great game and myself and the team look forward to another finals.”

The CBL play-off finals will showcase the best in basketball talent from ages 12-25 on Sunday, June 26.

COME WEDNESDAY morning at 9am, English Football League supporters up and down the country will be fixed to their computers or mobile devices to check out who their team will be playing on the opening day of the season on August 6.

Phone calls will be made and text messages sent on what fixtures will be the most enticing, reviewing the run-in, daring to dream that their

club will have a chance at promotion come May. That is no different this time around for Millwall fans - none more so than Lions manager Neil Harris.

It is under a week until the 201617 EFL fixtures are released and Millwall will be spending a second successive campaign at League One level, looking to gain promotion back to the Championship at the second attempt after play-off final defeat last month.

And the Lions boss expressed his and his players’ - excitement at

knowing how their season will look come June 22.

“One thing I do know is that I'm excited for the fixtures coming out.”

Harris explained.

“I always look forward to that, then we can plan, we will be organised and look forward to working the boys hard pre-season.

“I don't think there is an ideal game to start the season off with.”

Last season Millwall had to travel to Wigan, Blackpool and Fleetwood all on Tuesday nights, and even if Harris is hoping the fixture computer is kinder on his side, he

said the players and the staff will “get on with it” and not moan about how their season’s fixtures turn out.

“We don't moan about things, we just get on with it,” Harris added.

“We just get on with it - with cancelled fixtures, rearranged fixtures and however long the journeys are.

“As a team and a squad, we get on with it.

“Our away record was excellent [last season], it'll be the same this year, the fixture list will be the fixture list, however it falls, we will get on with it.”

Having missed out on an immediate return to England’s second tier, Harris admits there will be a target on Millwall’s back next season, but he and his side will be prepared to take on all-comers.

The Lions boss said: “There will be an expectation level on us this year, I don't think there will be many teams wanting to face us at the beginning of the season.

“We will prepare for whoever we get. I spoke to some of the players and they are looking forward to it already. We will be ready to go on August 6.”

2016-17 club-by-club guide - Part 2 of 2 LAST WEEK Jay Taylor looked at 12 of Millwall’s League One counterparts for the 2016-17 season. This week, the remaining opposition are analysed ahead of the new English Football League fixtures being released next Wednesday, June 22 at 9am.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC

Founded: 1895 Stadium: Boundary Park Last season: 17th Current title odds: 40/1

For much of last season, Oldham were embroiled in a relegation battle. David Dunn started off the campaign as the Latic’s boss until four days after Millwall defeated the Greater Manchester side at Boundary Park. Dunn was sacked and replaced with former boss John Sheridan with Oldham five points adrift in the relegation zone. Oldham secured their League One status with two games left. Their final away fixture of the season was the last time the two sides met with Millwall coming out 3-0 winners. Shane Ferguson scored either side of a Byron Webster brace to secure the three points that lifted the Lions up to third in the table.

OXFORD UNITED

Founded: 1892 Stadium: Kassam Stadium Last season: 2nd (League Two, promoted) Current title odds: 12/1

Michael Appleton’s U’s had a fantastic season last time out, with it culminating in promotion to League One. Oxford also made it to the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, but would lose 3-2 to Barnsley after coming through the southern section area final against Millwall. The Lions will know what to expect when they come up against Appleton’s men next season. In the last meeting between the two sides, Lee Gregory scored the winner in a 1-0 win at the Kassam Stadium in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy southern area final second-leg, ultimately losing 2-1 on aggregate to the U’s.

PETERBOROUGH

Founded: 1934 Stadium: ABAX Stadium (London Road) Last season: 13th Current title odds: 14/1

The Posh were one of the most local games for Millwall last season in a division that was predominantly northern. Dave Robertson was manager until September 6 when a 2-1 defeat to Southend saw the end of his reign with Peterborough 20th, one place outside the relegation zone. Taking four points from their opening six games, the promotion contenders appointed Graham Westley as manager. The lift a new manager can give only lasted so long as Wesley was sacked in April after such a positive start. The Posh nosedived and they finished mid-table after a brief encounter with the playoff places. Millwall ran out 3-0 winners in the last meeting; Steve Morison’s double and Lee Gregory’s strike sealed the win.

PORT VALE

Founded: 1876 Stadium: Vale Park Last season: 12th Current title odds: 40/1

Despite finishing mid-table last season, Vale’s home form was fifth best in the division. Only losing four on their own patch, one being against Millwall. Robert Page’s men faltered on the road, 18th best form away form, only winning six away from Vale Park. The Valiants’ were in and around the play-off picture during the middle of the season but faded away, eventually finishing in 12th. Page has since left to join Northampton with Shefki Kuqi favourite to take the managerial hot seat at Vale Park. The last meeting between Millwall and Port Vale ended with goals from Lee Gregory putting the Lions two goals up before Steve Morison added a third in a 3-1 win at The Den.

ROCHDALE

Founded: 1907 Stadium: Spotland Last season: 10th Current title odds: 20/1

Finishing tenth last season, and only five points off the top six was by no means a fluke for Rochdale, who in the previous year, finished eighth - six points off the play-offs. They may have finished lower down but they closed the gap by a point on the post-season places. Expect Keith Hill’s men to again be one of many sides to challenge for a top six spot. They have established themselves in League One after winning their first promotion in over 50 years from League Two back in 2013. The last meeting between the Lions and the Shakers ended with a 1-0 win at Spotland, courtesy of a close range Lee Gregory strike.

SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Founded: 1899 Stadium: Glanford Park Last season: 7th Current title odds: 20/1 The Iron were one of the surprise packages last season. For the majority of the campaign, they looked to be swimming in mid-table mediocrity.

At the end of January, Scunthorpe were 15th.

But after only losing two of their final 20 games, they finished seventh, coming agonisingly close to making it into the play-offs on the final day of the season, only to miss out to Barnsley on goal difference.

The last meeting between The Lions and the Iron was at The Den and ended in an away win with G a r y McSheffrey and Jim O’Brien scoring to secure a 2-0 win for the visitors.

Fast becoming the perineal under-achievers in League One, Sheffield United have been favourites every season they have they were relegated to the third tier in 2011. They have been unable to win promotion back to the Championship since. Chris Wilder has replaced Nigel Adkin’s as manager during the summer with the former Northampton man looking to do what six managers have been unable to do with the Blades in five years. The last time Millwall played Sheffield United, Chris Taylor - on loan from Blackburn - scored two minutes into his second debut in what would be the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for Neil Harris’ men.

Founded: 1906 Stadium: Roots Hall Last season: 15th Current title odds: 20/1

Another of League One's sides to flirt with the play-offs and end up missing out due to bad form when the business end of the season came around. Phil Parkinson’s men had a real chance of making the play-offs until a run of bad from hit them at the wrong time. The eventually finished 15th, winning one of their final ten games. Millwall last met the Shrimpers three days after Christmas. Joe Martin, Shaun Cummings, Fred Onyedinma and Aiden O’Brien scored in the 4-0 rout at Roots Hall in one of the Lions’ finest team performances of the season.

Founded: 1879 Stadium: City Ground Last season: 16th Current title odds: 33/1

Mark Cooper’s side had a rather anonymous season, a brief work of relegation-threatened them before finding some solid form to propel themselves out of any danger. The season petered out as they finished safely in mid-table. Millwall are unbeaten against Swindon in their seven games and the last meeting was at the County Ground where Neil Harris’ men would throw away a twogoal lead in spectacular fashion. Lee Gregory and Steve Morison scored before a debatable Nicky Ajose penalty halved the deficit.

Michael Doughty scored an added-time equalised to snatch away three points for the Lions as they left Wiltshire with only one point for their troubles.

Founded: 1886 Stadium: Greenhous Meadow Last season: 20th Current title odds: 33/1

The Shrews made an immediate return to League One last season after relegation to League Two a year before.

Shrewsbury had a difficult time competing in the division, being in the bottom half of the table for the majority of the season. Micky Melon’s men finished one place, and four points from making it two relegations in three seasons, just keeping their heads above water. The last time Millwall and Shrewsbury met, Ben Thompson scored a 25-yard stunner, later voted Millwall’s Goal of the Season, in a 3-1 win at The Den, Steve Morison and Lee Gregory added the second and third after going a goal down.

MILLWALL 47

Walsall has an eventful season in 2015-16. Dean Smith started the season with the Saddlers as they flew to the top of the table and were in the hunt for an automatic promotion place right up until the final day of the season. Smith left for Brentford with Sean O’Driscoll replacing him. But O’Driscoll wouldn't last the season. When Walsall had a dip in form a lost ground on the top two, the Irishman was sacked at the start of March and replaced with Jon Whitney. They had a shambolic play-off campaign against winners Barnsley losing 6-1 on aggregate. Mahlon Romeo scored on his debut in a 3-0 win at Banks’s Stadium last time the two sides met.

Lions boss “Delighted” Marquis and Upson secure new club careers

NEIL HARRIS has praised the efforts of two released players as they agree deals with new clubs and expressed his delight at the two securing their futures.

John Marquis and Ed Upson were given permission to talk to other clubs with their contracts set to expire on June 30 and told they would not be renewed.

Marquis how signed a two-year deal with League Two Doncaster Rovers after spending the second half of the season on loan at Northampton.

MK Dons snapped up Upson on the same length deal. He started the season well for Millwall before finding opportunities limited during the latter stages of the season.

And the Lions boss has thanked the two for their efforts and wished them every success at their new clubs.

“I’m delighted for both lads,” Harris told the News. “They are real top

professionals, the guys were desperate to play football week in and week out and I want to thank both of them for their effort.”

“John has had a frustrating few years, but unfortunately he couldn't force his way into the side.

“If you look back at the season, Lee Gregory, Steve Morison and Aiden O’Brien, they had 59 goals between them. It was tough for John to force his way into the side.

“Instead of sitting and waiting, he wanted to get out and play - he is a man who goes to work Monday to Friday to play on a Saturday. I'm delighted he has got himself a good club that is building for the future, I’m sure he will be successful at Doncaster.”

Upson will line up against his former side next season, with MK Dons’ relegated to League One after finishing 23rd in the Championship last year.

Harris said: “Ed was an integral part of what we did last year, especially early on in the season when we were

searching for consistency.

“He played in that position on the left, slightly tucked in that gave us some quality and balance to the team.

“I had various conversations throughout the year with Ed and he wants to play in the middle of the park, as much as he wanted to be part of the team and loved being part of the squad.

“He was really good with the lads but want to play in central midfield as it is his best position - we couldn't quite get him in there as often as he wanted to here.

“It was mutual at the end of the season and we decided Ed would move onto a new opportunity.

“To get that chance to play for MK Dons with their style of play, it is a good fit for him.

“Ed played a lot of football last season and I thank him for his efforts and wish him well for a long and successful career, but hopefully he doesn't play well against us!”

Lions boss making wingers a priority ahead of the new season

MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris has confirmed the club are actively pursuing the signature of at least one new winger prior to the start of the new season.

The Lions recently released the likes of Lee Martin and Ed Upson, both of whom played predominantly down the

left-hand side for Millwall when called upon.

Chris Taylor, who was on loan from Blackburn, was also a prominent figure down the flanks for Harris’ men last season, but he now looks set for a move to the Championship, after receiving strong offers from at least two clubs there.

And Harris will move on to other targets as he looks to inject some pace and guile into the wide areas of his Millwall team next season.

“We are looking at wide players,”

Harris said. “With Lee and Ed going, and Chris’ future uncertain, we need one if not two wide players.

“It’ll be a statement of intent bringing in wide players who can cross a ball and try to score goals.

“It isn't an overhaul of the squad to the squad like last summer and I'm delighted with the core of the squad we have.

“We are in a really strong position this summer - we just need to add the personnel to not only give us impetus, but they need to give us a different

types of ability.

“The lads that come in need the temperament and spirit that we had last year which drove us for so long, especially early during the difficult times.”

Harris also confirmed Mark Beevers is to leave the club at the end of his current contract.

The defender is yet to sign a new deal with the Lions and looks set for a move back up to his native north.

"We will look at replacements for him," Harris said. "Mark’s moving on

so we need to bring in a centre-half we already have Tony Craig, Byron Webster and Sid Nelson.

“I’ve been busy talking to centrehalves, Mark’s advisors have shown no interest in him staying... so we’re left to prepare for the new season without him.

“He’s had a really good season, he played his best football at the football club by far in the last twelve months.

“With his contract expiring he got himself in the shop window, he is a good lad."
