The 31-year-old woman, who did not want to be named, was targeted by two

The pair pushed the bank worker off her bike while she was still cycling and left her lying on the ground as they stole her brand new Brompton and the entire contents of its basket.

Last week, the News reported how scared residents had called a crisis meeting with police, and had even discussed setting up vigilante groups.

Great news for cancer sufferers

I

T IS fantastic to see the country’s first shop, dedicated to helping ease the side effects of cancer, opening in this borough.

Anyone suffering or looking after family or friends with the illness becomes acutely aware that having the right medication and treatment is just a part of the picture.

Indeed when you suffer from any illness the impact on your day to day living is huge. The effects of any illness prevent you from doing stuff that you otherwise take for granted.

Sadly cancer is still a prime killer, although because of the huge amount of research and fundraising behind it, many more are now able to live with it and beat it.

According to figures from the council, although there is a reduction in the number of deaths due to cancer in those aged under 75 in both London and England, there is limited evidence of this trend in Southwark. Numbers of deaths reduced from 265 (in 2000) to 220 (2007) but increased again to 271 in 2008. In 2008, the death rate due to cancer (under 75) is higher in Southwark (143 per 100,000) than in London (108) and England (112).

But since 2008 Southwark has undoubtedly benefited from a dedicated cancer centre at Guy’s, and a shop like this helps make Guy’s a leading light in helping people battling with this terrible disease.

Living so close to these amenities puts local people in a privileged position in what is an utterly terrible situation to find yourself in.

Hopefully shops like this will spread across the country and lead to more stores that can help people, particularly those also suffering with more rare conditions as they struggle to get the help, support, treatment and equipment that they need.

Worth a look!

ET’S HOPE Council Leader Peter John is serious when he says he “going to look at” whether residents should be balloted on regenerating their estates.

These words coming from any politician will inevitably be treated with suspicion, especially on the issue of housing and regeneration. But the historic standoff between successive council administrations and residents has little to no chance of improving if we keep to aged old ‘consultation process’.

This new policy of Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn will no doubt be a winner for national votes, but in London, which has some twenty Labour councils, it’s not so easy a picture.

The lack of funding to build council homes has meant deals with private housing developers are an attractive option. And to allow residents to make a real decision on what can be a series of factors they will have to be properly involved in the planning processes from the start, in financial as well as social terms.

It is the lack of understanding - often because residents have not been armed with all the details - that has caused so much upset over regeneration projects. Whether Corbyn’s ballot will work remains to be seen, but it’s definitely worth looking into.

A BUNCH of mates from the famous Fitzroy Lodge boxing gym have returned triumphant after two nights at the Union Theatre, performing their very own rock opera.

Bermondsey man Chris Terrill said his cast swapped sparring for singing and dancing with performances of their first production, ‘Oxblood Red’, with sold out shows on November 5 and 6.

Director Chris Terrill told the News: “There’s six of us in the cast, including two women.

“Everyone performing is a boxer and usually we just meet up and hit each other. But from that has come the most wonderful friendship.

“We realised that between us we can play guitar and sing and do bits and pieces. So we just started writing and meeting up and it’s grown organically.”

The plot for Oxblood Red – named after a popular choice of colour of Dr Marten’s boots – follows the life of Terry Swan, an old skinhead on the brink of turning 60.

Terry’s life is a mess after losing touch with his kids and getting divorced from his wife.

He seeks to relive his misspent youth in the 1970s, and takes a trip to the old East End and Canary Wharf, and he sees how much it’s changed.

“The play is about Terry on his walk, and you’re never quite sure if you’re with him in real life or if he’s in a dream,” said Chris, 65.

“You feel every emotion under the sun. You’ll be crying with laughter and with sadness when it ends.”

“We’re a real cross section of people,” Chris said. “It’s a

“There’s a curious bond of honour and respect between people who get

The 31-year-old woman, who did not want to be named, was targeted by two youths while cycling through Russia Dock Woodland at about 3pm on October 25.

The pair pushed the bank worker off her bike while she was still cycling and left her lying on the ground as they stole her brand new Brompton and the entire contents of its basket.

The woman had to have surgery to piece her collarbone back together and also suffered a fractured elbow which has left her unable to work – or even tie her own shoelaces.

Last week, the News reported how scared residents had called a crisis meeting with police, and had even discussed setting up vigilante groups.

Speaking exclusively to the News, the 31-year-old said she no longer had the confidence to cycle or run to work and that she was considering moving out of the area she had called home for eighteen months.

“I remember it was a beautiful day; it was sunny and warm and I think it was

“When I cycled through Russia Dock Woodland I remember seeing two teenagers cycling very close to me.

“It didn’t worry me at first but then they really closed in on me so one was right in front and one was right behind.

“The guy in front said ‘get off your bike’ and I was actually quite confused so I just said ‘no’ and carried on cycling and then he just pushed me off.”

The woman said the grey Brompton M3L bike was worth £1,000 and the contents of the basket, which included her iPhone, house keys, purse and clothes, was also worth at least £1,000.

She also had to cancel a holiday for her boyfriend’s birthday and could be left with permanent numbness in her left shoulder.

“On the Saturday I was meant to fly to Prague with my boyfriend for his birthday,” she said.

Steve Cornish, chair of the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, reassured residents the woodland had fullyoperational CCTV cameras once again thanks to a member of the community, although it was not said how.

Another resident asked what was being done to tackle moped-enabled crime in the area.

In response, Insp Cole said it was a difficult crime to combat, but specialist traffic officers had been brought in to help, who were trained in pursuit.

“I’m in a lot of pain and I sometimes have trouble sleeping and keep replaying what happened in my head and thinking is there something I could have done to help myself.”

The victim urged anyone with information to get in touch with police.

She described the suspects as two black males, aged about sixteen or seventeen, with local accents.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Detectives in Southwark are appealing for information following the robbery of a woman on Archangel Street, Rotherhithe.

“At 3.10pm on October 25 police were called to reports of a robbery.

Officers attended and spoke to the victim, a 31-year-old woman who had been pushed off her bike.

“Two men took her bike containing a canvas bag with her personal belongings.

“London’s Ambulance Service attended and took the woman to a central London hospital where she was treated for a broken collar bone and fractured elbow.

POLICE TOLD Rotherhithe residents they were their “eyes and ears” at a public meeting amid rising concerns over crime in the area.

Residents were urged to report anything suspicious they see and hear in the area, no matter how small, as it could be “the missing piece of the jigsaw” needed to crack a case.

CAMBERWELL: Thieves tried but failed to steal a cash point from a Tesco Express in Southampton Way, police have said.

The attempted burglary was believed to have happened between 2am and 5am on Wednesday November 8, and was reported at 6:15am. A Met spokesman said: “The burglary is being investigated by detectives from Southwark CID. CCTV enquiries are ongoing. There have been no arrests.” Anyone with information should call 101.

Pair rescued from flat blaze FIREFIGHTERS RESCUED a man and woman from a firstfloor window after a Bermondsey maisonette set alight, writes Chiara Giordano...

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to a fire at Trotwood House, in Wilson Grove, off Jamaica Road.

Half of a five-roomed maisonette on the ground and first floor was damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters rescued a man and a

woman from the first floor window using a ladder.

They were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by London Ambulance Service.

The fire brigade was called at 7.42am yesterday, Wednesday, and the fire was under control by 8.40am.

Crews from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Deptford and Whitechapel fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

He said the couple had lived in the area for about eleven years and had never been burgled before.

A spokesperson for Southwark Police said: “Southwark CID are investigating a burglary that occurred on Fellbrigg Road, East Dulwich, between Saturday, September 30, and Sunday, October 1.

“Amongst the stolen property was a one-off pair of jade and diamond earrings; these are particularly striking and something that people would certainly remember had they been offered for sale.

Serena Tolley designed the pair of green jade and diamond earrings herself, which her mother had made for her big day in 2011.

The sentimental jewellery was stolen along with other items during a burglary at the home she shares with her husband Ed Tolley in East Dulwich.

Mr Tolley, also 40, said the wedding gift was “incredibly sentimental and important” to his wife – and that she just wanted them to be returned.

“My wife is Australian but of Asian descent, so jade is important to her and the diamonds made it special as well so they are incredibly sentimental,” he told the News.

“They were a gift from her mother, which is important in Asian culture, and she was planning to pass them on to keep them in the family as an air loom.

“Break-ins are pretty devastating; you feel horrendously violated at the thought that somebody has been ransacking through your house taking whatever they wish.

“It’s heart-breaking; my wife just wants her earrings back.”

Mr Tolley said other items stolen during the burglary included a jade bangle passed down to his wife by her grandmother in Singapore.

A number of well-known names

appear on the register, including those of writer Joseph Conrad and French anarchist Martial Bourdin, as well as hundreds of wounded Royal Navy personnel who returned from raids on Belgian ports during April and May of 1918.

Among these was Able Seaman Albert Edward McKenzie, aged nineteen, who served on board HMS Vindictive and received the Victoria Cross for his bravery during the Zeebrugge Raid.

He came under fire in the port, losing his machine gun in the process, but carried on regardless, “pushing, kicking and kneeing every German who got in the way.” He was awarded the Victoria Cross after the war.

The Dreadnought records show he was admitted to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds on May 9, 1918, and was discharged to fever hospital on September 13.

NEVER-SEEN-before medical records showing how young Bermondsey WWI hero Albert McKenzie died have been released.

Records covering over 100 years of admissions to the Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital in Greenwich recently became available to the public online.

The admission registers, covering the period 1826-1930, have been transcribed to create 220,000 digital records featuring information on seafarers from across the world, and patients from other walks of life.

The digital records provide medical information on the patients, such as the dates they were admitted and discharged, the vessel they were last employed on, and the floor they stayed on.

The ‘nature of complaint’ is also recorded, as well as where they discharged to, or the condition they

founded in 1821 in response to the increasing number of homeless and impoverished seafarers living on the streets of London after the Napoleonic Wars.

Initially, the hospital was based on a number of ships moored on the Thames off Greenwich, including HMS Dreadnought, a name which was retained when the hospital relocated to the vacant infirmary building of the Royal Hospital at Greenwich as the Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital in 1870.

The medical records of those admitted to the hospital were digitised as part of a project involving more than 100 volunteers from all around the world, run in partnership with the National Maritime Museum and Ancestry.

The Dreadnought Seamen’s Hospital records are available to access via membership to Ancestry.co.uk.

The resource is free to access for visitors to the Caird Library and Archive at the National Maritime Museum.

Council is ‘going to look at’ balloting residents on regeneration

Internet sensation who sings with dad in car up for dementia award BOROUGH

THE SON of internet sensation Songaminute Man has been listed as a finalist in the national dementia awards.

Simon McDermott, 41, from Borough, has raised £150,000 for Alzheimer’s Society over the past year through karaoke videos filmed with his dad Teddy, 81, who has dementia.

Videos of Simon and Teddy singing along to classic songs in the car have been watched by people all over the world, raising awareness and funds for the charity.

And the success of his son’s campaign even led to Teddy releasing his own album.

Simon’s has now been nominated for the fundraiser of the year (individual) prize at the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friendly Awards.

A FESTIVE fundraising bash will be held at a Bermondsey pub to make sure elderly people aren’t alone on Christmas Day.

Phil Burkett, of Bermondsey Beat, and Natasha Nicholls, whose family runs the Stanley Arms, have organised the event at the pub in Southwark Park Road.

The annual party raises money for Bermondsey Care for the Elderly, which arranges for older people in the community to be picked up from their homes on Christmas Day and treated to a four-course meal and entertainment in the Robens Suite at the top of Guy’s Tower.

“The most important thing they get is some company because come about 3pm on Christmas Day, when we are loosening our trousers and watching the Queen’s speech, an elderly person in Bermondsey is putting their meal in the microwave,” said Mr Burkett.

“I’ve just got this picture of them on their own and it breaks my heart to think that this can happen at this time of year so over the last few years I’ve tried to help towards the fundraising side to help the charity.

“I’m just trying to make a slight difference so B e r m o n d s e y ’s elderly aren’t on their own.”

GARAGES ON a Bermondsey estate could be demolished to make way for council homes.

The council is proposing to knock down the garages in Welsford Street, next to Thorburn Square, to build ten new council properties, including one suitable for a wheelchair user.

They are expected to be submitted by December.

If approved, building would begin in spring 2019 and be completed by winter 2020.

Tributes paid to Emmy award-winning filmmaker who helped change Camberwell

AN EMMY Award-winning filmmaker from Camberwell, who was also the driving force behind the transformation of Burgess Park, died on October 20.

Cambridge graduate Jeremy Bennett was chairman of The Camberwell Society for seven years.

The 77-year-old died at King’s College Hospital following a heart operation, though he had suffered from a non-malignant brain tumour for a number of years.

Mr Bennett was credited with sowing the seeds of what became a national federation of charities called Groundwork, which blossomed from a project he originally coined as the Southwark Environmental Trust. The Trust later became Groundwork Southwark in 1995, and Groundwork London, and spread around the country There are 160 projects in the borough that are owed to Groundwork Southwark. The most notable was Burgess Park, which life-long Southwark residents will know was once a huge industrial zone, once cut

through by the old Surrey Canal.

With Mr Bennett at its helm, Groundwork Southwark worked with Southwark Council to bring the landmark project into fruition, alongside Lawn Tennis Association and Sport England.

Mr Bennett also led a campaign to

save Denmark Hill Station, which was threatened with demolition after a fire in the early 1980s. Thanks to his work, British Rail was persuaded to invest in the station, and it reopened in 1984, merged with the Phoenix pub (formally the Phoenix and Firkin).

The Camberwell Society’s new

president, Nicholas Roskill from Grove Lane, told the News: “Jeremy had a great social conscience. He wanted to improve the environment, and to a great extent he succeeded.

“He was essentially a very modest man. He rarely talked about himself, though he was a great communicator

and he could command great respect.”

All of this work was in addition to Mr Bennett’s day job – as a pioneering documentary maker.

He worked at the BBC for 20 years before establishing his own production company, 3BM TV Ltd, which made films such as: ‘Monty – in love and war’, the four-part series ‘The Complete Churchill’, ‘Hiroshima’ and ‘The Cuban Missile Crisis’, for which he won an Emmy award.

A memorial service for Mr Bennett was held on November 7 at Christ’s Chapel in Dulwich Village. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Tine, with whom he had three children, and has five grandchildren.

Nature area planned in £3.5m revamp of park

DOZENS OF new trees and a new nature area are being created along the south-west side of Burgess Park.

Southwark Council is in the middle of completing £3.5m of works in the Rust Square section of the park. And it forms part of a £9m scheme that will also see improved sports facilities and public toilets.

Among the new features will be: • 90 trees to be planted after 45 cut down in park area between Kitson Road, Addington Square and New Church Road • Meadow planning in Rust Square (beside Kitson Road) • “Natural play area” made of wooden features for children and toddlers • Section of New Church Road will be removed from beyond the turning onto Southampton Way, this area will become the new nature area • A new park entrance with lighting and seating at the very south-west corner, between Kitson Road and New Church Road • Winding paths within the fields beside New Church Road will be straightened to increase the area of

BERMONDSEY RESIDENTS were kept awake by work on London’s ‘super sewer’ until 2am one night.

Tideway is currently in the process of building a tunnel through the River Thames to control sewer overflow discharges, and one of the main worksites is at Chambers Wharf.

Residents living near the site have complained of noise disturbance and dust since the £4.2 billion project began – and reported an “extreme case” of this in the early hours of November 8.

Councillor Hamish McCallum, who lives near the site, said at least ten residents got in touch with him after work on the site continued until almost 2am.

He branded Tideway’s lack of communication with residents regarding the incident as “diabolical” and said more should have been done to warn the community.

“I think it’s fair to say that the frustration is quite longstanding and the

impact has been going on for two years now,” said the Liberal Democrat Riverside ward councillor.

“What happened last week was quite an extreme example of that and brought home to the people in the area how inconsiderate Tideway are being.

“Maybe it was a one off – but if it’s an indication of things to come, or if it’s extending the limit of what the residents are expected to put up with, then that’s a different thing.”

Cllr McCallum said residents were

affected by the noise of machinery, light pollution, and the sound of workers “shouting” to each other while working at the site. He also said work regularly continued on the site until 10pm on weekdays. “My view is that it shouldn’t happen – but if it is going to, or something like that happens again, there needs to be better communication,” he added.

In response, a spokesperson for Tideway said they experienced a number of quality issues with concrete being

delivered to the site on November 7, as well as vehicles caught up in traffic, and therefore the process of pouring the concrete was delayed.

“On November 7 work at our Chambers Wharf site overran into the early hours of Wednesday morning,” said a spokesperson.

“This went beyond the time agreed with Southwark Council, which is 10pm for this type of works, and we alerted the council when we knew that work would go beyond 10pm.

£500m plans for old Peek Frean factory submitted to the council

GROSVENOR HAS submitted its £500million masterplan for Bermondsey to the council.

If approved, the development, mainly based on part of the former Peek Frean Biscuit Factory, is expected to provide up to 1,343 purpose-built rental homes, almost 2,500 jobs, and office, retail, and leisure space.

Compass School, currently on the former Lewisham and Southwark College site on Drummond Road, would be moved into a purpose-built 600-place school elsewhere on the same site, but closer to Bermondsey station.

The proposals show the development would also feature two new pedestrian routes through the railway arches, including a reinstated section of Keeton’s Road which would provide a direct footpath from Bermondsey underground station to the Blue.

Buildings will range in height up to 28 storeys and flats would range in size from studios to three bedrooms.

Grosvenor is proposing to provide 27.5 per cent of homes at discount market rent for people living and working in Bermondsey and across Southwark.

The property company said three quarters of those who gave feedback to the final plans, which went on show to the public recently, confirmed their support, compared to nine per cent who opposed the plans, and seventeen per cent who were neutral.

Simon Harding-Roots, executive director of Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, said: "I am delighted that we have submitted this ambitious masterplan for Bermondsey. It is the culmination of our work with the community over the last four years.

“Many local residents have taken part in that process and helped us to develop proposals we believe would provide a major boost to Bermondsey.

We are very grateful for their input and guidance.

"Our proposals signal our long-term commitment to Bermondsey. We believe this plan could revitalise the neighbourhood, provide much-needed,

“We are working with our contractors to ensure the risk of this happening again is minimised. We would like to apologise to residents of Chambers Wharf who were disturbed by the work.”

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark’s cabinet member for communities, safety and leisure, confirmed the council was investigating the incident and apologised to residents who should have been alerted by Tideway. “It is unacceptable that our residents are having their nights disturbed by these works, which are intrusive enough during the day,” he said.

“The council did not give any special permissions for work to continue so late and our officers are investigating what happened.

“Tideway should also look at how they communicate with local residents to make sure they are fully informed about when works will be going on and what impact this might have.

“Noise, particularly late at night, causes significant upset and the lack of information adds to annoyance and lack of consideration.

“I can assure residents that the council is actively investigating the breach and whether an offence has been committed.”

Southwark up for council of year

SOUTHWARK: Southwark is in the running to be crowned council of the year.

The local authority has been shortlisted in the category as part of the 2018 Local Government Chronicle awards.

Nearly 100 organisations have been shortlisted as finalists in the coveted awards, which recognise the best of local government innovation and service delivery.

Camberwell bridge closed to traffic in 2016 set to re-open next year

CAMBERWELL GROVE Bridge is set to reopen to vehicle traffic in 2018, after a year of uncertainty for local residents who faced increased traffic and air pollution.

The bridge was closed to all but pedestrians and cyclists in 2016, after a steal beam cracked inside it.

In a public consultation answered by 1,888 locals, 73 per cent called for it to reopen.

Though the bridge will return to normal, councillor Ian Wingfield, cabinet member for environment and public realm, said the reopening could still be months away.

“We still don’t have a confirmed date from Network Rail [for the repair to be carried out],” Cllr Wingfield said.

“It would be in February or March.

There’s not going to be an immediate reopening, it’s not in the council’s power.”

The repairs will cost the council £17,000 and will make the bridge strong enough to carry three tonnes, enough for cars and vans, but not HGVs. The consultation also showed

support for a wider study to be carried out into the road network of surrounding streets.

Cllr Wingfield added: “Putting the bridge to one side, everyone says we need a study. These are old Victorian streets dealing with a lot of traffic, and that presents problems in a residential area.

“The way forward is for a Quiet Way [cycle path] to run down the Grove, and that would come with other road improvements such as new lights and new painted lines.

“We’re hoping for something similar to Dulwich, where there were concerns with the junctions in the village, but we got TfL on board to fund improvements in the area.”

Lloyd Anderson and Rebecca Kong, both Lyndhurst Grove residents, previously told the News that the bridge closure had caused a huge surge in traffic in narrow roads in the west of Peckham, with “almost daily” altercations between competing drivers. Private research by local resident Alastair Roots, using the council’s data and his own recordings, found traffic levels (vehicles per day) increased by 96 per cent in Chadwick Road and 78 per cent in Lyndhurst Grove.

Concern over future of former pub

DULWICH RESIDENTS have voiced concern about the historic Grove Tavern pub which has been left derelict for four years.

“People are concerned about the condition of the pub,” said Ian McInnes, chair of the Dulwich Society, who organised a public meeting on November 4.

“The majority view is that people want it put back to what it was, a nice pub with a garden. But we’re in a position where we have an empty building that’s not being looked after.”

The pub’s closure follows a kitchen fire in 2014. The building is owned by the Dulwich Estate, and pub chain Stonegate pubs have a lease which has eight years left.

The building in its current form has stood since the 1920s, but Ian says the site has been occupied by other pub buildings since the eighteenth century. It was also a

Harvester restaurant before it was acquired by Stonegate.

The pub sits within the Dulwich Wood conservation area, and within the setting of the Grade II-listed St Peter's Parish Church and Hall.

A spokeswoman for Stonegate said: “The lease end is 2025 and we are currently reviewing development options for the property in conjunction with the Dulwich Estate who are the freeholders.”

A Dulwich Estate spokeswoman said: “No other pub operator [besides Stonegate] is interested in the premises.

Therefore, The Dulwich Estate hopes that the whole site can be redeveloped for mixed use with a commercial element to provide employment and high quality housing, including affordable homes.

“This would support the Council's vision for jobs and homes under the New Southwark Plan. As with any development, proposals will have to satisfy local authority requirements, but also be sustainable.”

Lantern procession part of five day festival in Rotherhithe

A FREE five-day festival is heading to Rotherhithe in the build up to the Mayflower 400 celebrations.

Illuminate Rotherhithe 2017 will kick off with a lantern procession on Thursday, November 23, followed by a concert at St Mary the Virgin Church.

Folk duo Jimmy Aldridge and Sid Goldsmith will perform at the event, and people are invited to take part by sharing music, song, poetry and discourse commemorating the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World in 1620.

Free lantern-making workshops, folk dance and song workshops, ropehandling demonstrations, and Museum of London Docklands workshops are about to begin in all seven primary schools on the peninsula. The folk dance workshops will culminate in a ceilidh at Bacon’s College which will see 480 children from

different schools dance.

On November 24 the Citizens of the World Choir will be singing songs of migration, sharing the stage with members of the public who will describe how they, their families and their ancestors ‘landed’ in Rotherhithe.

There will be a family ceilidh for all on November 25, a screening of The Pilgrims film followed by a discussion chaired by the local history society on November 26, and an exhibition about Rotherhithe delftware tin pottery manufactured in the area by a Flemish potter in the 1630s. The festival has been organised as part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations, which will commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World in 1620. The themes of migration and local history will feature throughout the festival, which is being held from November 23-27. CROWDS GATHERED at war memorials across the borough to pay their respects on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Veterans, politicians and clergymen joined the biggest gatherings at the West Lane memorial on Saturday, and in Borough High Street on Sunday.

Saturday’s service was led by the Right Reverend Jonathan Baker, Bishop of Fulham, and the mayor of Southwark Charlie Smith.

Wreaths were laid by council leader Peter John, deputy leader Stephanie Cryan, and MPs Neil Coyle and Helen Hayes. Former Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes and Southwark Lib Dems leader councillor Anood AlSamerai also joined. They were followed

by RAF veterans and representatives of the police and London Fire Brigade.

The gathering at West Lane was said to have been the biggest turnout it has ever had.

Sunday’s service was attended by MPs Neil Coyle and Harriet Harman and Cllrs John and Cryan. Councillor Damian O’Brien represented the Lib Dems, joined by Simon Hughes.

Borough commanders Simon Messinger (Southwark police) and Neil Chisholm (fire brigade) laid wreaths, along with Colonel Simon Duckworth.

Lions fans break record in poppy appeal fundraiser

GENEROUS MILLWALL fans raised a record-breaking amount for the club’s Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Lions fans managed to raise £5,165 for the appeal at the club’s Remembrance Day game against Burton Albion on November 4.

The total is a record-breaking figure for such a collection at The Den. It was generated through both bucket collections and the sale of badges and poppies by Millwall’s Blue Bus.

Millwall's annual Remembrance Day game, held ahead of the actual day on November 11, saw soldiers invited to The Den as special guests, who also volunteered in the overall fundraising effort.

The club said it “greatly appreciated” the efforts of a small group of Millwall fans who were “hugely influential” in helping to arrange the fundraising drive before the match.

“The Lions would like to place on record its sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who helped to fundraise and donate,” a club spokesperson said.

THE COUNTRY’S first shop dedicated to helping ease the side effects of cancer has opened at Guy’s Hospital.

The Live Better With Boutique at Browns store is the UK’s first physical shop where patients can find products to help with the symptoms and side effects of living with cancer.

From breast prostheses, mastectomy bras and bespoke gift hampers, to books, wigs and bamboo headwear, it is a one-stop shop for those living with cancer.

Tunnelling machines digging Northern Line extension reach Kennington

THE NORTHERN Line Extension reached a major milestone last week with the completion of tunnelling work.

A huge tunnel boring machine broke through its final wall at Kennington, meaning the two 3.2km tunnels to new destinations Battersea Power Station, and Nine Elms, have been built.

Since their launch in the spring, two boring machines (affectionately named Helen and Amy) have worked around the clock to create the north and southbound tunnels that will extend the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line.

Transport for London expect the new stations to open in 2020, and will bring the Battersea and Nine Elms area to within a fifteen minute journey of the City and West End. Much like the planned Bakerloo Line extension, it will usher in huge regeneration projects in northern areas of Lambeth and Wandsworth, with an expected 20,000 new homes.

TfL commissioner Mike Brown said:

“I’m delighted to welcome the two tunnelling machines to Kennington after their epic journey. Both machines have had to navigate a challenging, congested path under south London which included sewers, power cables, a Victorian-era well, and existing Victoria and Northern line tunnels.

This achievement brings us a significant step closer to the delivery of the first major Tube extension in nearly two decades.”

London mayor Sadiq Khan said: “The Northern Line extension is not only going to make travelling to Battersea and Nine Elms easier, it’s also going to bring tens of thousands of new jobs and homes to the area.”

‘Boy on a tree’ war memorial set for Walworth WALWORTH

A HUGE bronze war memorial depicting a boy standing on a fallen tree will be built in the new Elephant Park area of Walworth.

The 6m-long statue will “represent the lives lost by war”, and the boy standing on the trunk “will look to the future”, Southwark Council has said.

It has been commissioned by the council for about £196,000, working with developer Lendlease. And it will be placed in a new public square by Wansey Street.

A planning application was submitted on Monday, and the statue is due to be installed in May 2018.

"This proposal is largely structured around two coexisting dualities,” said artist Kenny Hunter.

“The first sets in opposition the trauma of war to the idealism of childhood innocence expressed

through the fallen tree and the figure of the youth.

“The second is between this horizontal bronze tree and the living trees [that will be positioned around it]. One is memorialised, while the others continue to grow and change.”

The project has been put together in consultation with the Imperial War Museum, the Royal British Legion, Inspire community centre, Artists Studio Company, and the Contemporary Arts Society.

Council leader Peter John said: “This has been a labour of love for many members of the council and the local community and we are very excited to see Kenny Hunter’s beautiful vision come to life.

“The memorial is both a reminder of both the tragedies of war, of all wars and conflicts, and that hope and the human spirit continue, and will be a focal point for the local community to come and pay their respects to lives lost and changed forever.”

AST WEEKEND saw our community and whole country pay respects to all those who have seen action in our Armed Forces and everyone affected by war.

My own family served on three continents in World War II: Europe, Asia and Africa but sadly I have just one relative left who saw action.

Shockingly, in the last century, there was just a single year in which no UK service personnel died in service. I was proud to attend and lay wreaths on behalf of everyone in Bermondsey and Old Southwark at a number of services, including: at City Hall; on West Lane; at the memorial to the Queen's Regiment on Old Jamaica Road; at the St Saviour’s memorial on Borough High Street; and at the Imperial War Museum. I'd like to thank everyone who participated over the weekend, especially as remembering former and current sacrifices comes at a time of political flux and volatility, with the re-emergence of extremism in Europe and beyond. Worryingly, 60,000 people appeared at a Fascist rally in Warsaw last week and the counter extremism group I co-chair in Parliament heard last week that over a thousand far-right referrals were made to the police in the U.K. last year alone.

I joined the excellent local poppy sellers at their Bermondsey station stall last week where I was honoured to meet Joseph Eagle who is 96 and grew up (and still lives) in Bermondsey. Joseph joined the RAF aged just 18 in 1939, and fought for our country throughout World War II. He and all the Bermondsey poppy sellers raised good sums for the British Legion and I thank everyone for their generosity.

Sadly, I also recently attended the funeral of George Stevens at St Mary's in Rotherhithe. George was a great local character who used to entertain me with stories of former elections; I even had a video of him singing and dancing to a more risqué campaign ditty! The funeral was touching, with stories of his escapades, but I know Joyce and his family will all miss him greatly. I was glad to have been able to pay my respects.

In the run up to Christmas I am mindful of the need to ensure no local older people are isolated or excluded from festivities. The pressure is on to secure plenty of volunteers on the big day at Bacon’s College and Guy’s Tower to ensure everyone gets a Christmas dinner and company. Cycle lane madness

IN REPLY to Donnachadh McCarthy's column, Southwark News, 2 November, 2017, regarding a few of the points he brought up.

Help - we have only ‘til November the 16 th (today) to stop this madness. 3,500 cyclists apparently use this route every day with no space? They have a bus lane that no private cars are allowed in and if they obey The Highway Code they should be very safe.

The estimated cost of implementing it will no doubt double by the time it's built for cyclists who don't contribute anything to it.

To spend all that money on a segregated cycle lane that will be more or less empty for the majority of the day seems immoral to me when the money could be put to better use.

The Southwark kids obesity problem has a lot to do with the junk food they eat and I'm sure they do PE in school.

The business people along the route don't want the cycle lane as reported in the Southwark News.

Cars will be stationary longer in traffic that won't be moving, so in fact will increase pollution, so rather than being safer longterm the cyclists will be poisoned more quickly.

Where does he think the extra pollution will go?

Not everyone is mobile enough to ride a bike, so what happens to elderly people who rely on cars for doctor and hospital appointments, or getting shopping from the Quays?

In summing up, a small number of selfish, noisy cyclists want to create more pollution with more congestion for a limited time of the day, because they don't understand The Highway Code to stay safe in a bus lane - at what no doubt will come to an astronomical cost! And they’ll deny elderly and disabled people the quicker time for their appointments

and shopping trips.

Help our plane hell

HACAN South East, newly formed from the Plane Hell Campaign which you have written on and published letters from during the course of this year, is running a survey of numbers of aircraft flying across the Borough of Southwark and asking for your readers' help.

While some areas have been overflown for many years, others have only more recently been affected by altered flight paths.

Additionally, planes are coming in to Heathrow at lower altitudes and more frequently, with the usual hours of respite being eaten into by planes arriving later in the day, and earlier in the morning.

Can you help us? Here is how: This month, November 2017, Plane Hell/HACAN South East are asking for your readers' help: Heathrow is consulting on the principle of flight paths early next year.

• We want to remind Heathrow just how critical the situation is in Southwark.

• We need to get an accurate number of planes going over SE London • It will give an idea of any changes there have been since HACAN (a voice for those under flight paths) did counts in 2004, 2009 and 2011.

How readers can help • choose an area/s, a date/s and a time/s • count the number of overhead and nearby planes • spend one hour in the morning • and one hour in the afternoon after 3pm

Earlier this week, a John Ruskin Street reader counted 48 planes between 5.58 - 6.58am and the following morning 16 planes between 4.33 - 5am. In 30 years at the same address this only became noticeable from September 2016 onwards. Heathrow and Government need to know the detrimental effects constant noise and lack of sleep have on the population's health.

Councils must borrow

RESPONDING TO the IPPR’s report on local authority housebuilding.

Councils are keen to get on with the job of delivering all types of homes, including those for affordable and social rent, as it is the only way we are going to address our national housing shortage.

Local authorities are playing their part, making sure that nine out of 10 planning appli-cations are approved, but increasingly the homes are not being built – which is why it is essential that councils’ planning services are properly funded, and that they are giv-en the power to make sure that developers build out approved homes quickly.

If we’re to really deliver the homes we need, with the infrastructure to support them, the Chancellor needs to use the Autumn Budget to lift the housing borrowing cap, and enable councils to borrow to build once more.

F YOU are planning a trip in the next four to six weeks to a country where malaria is found, you should seek advice now on malaria prevention treatment.

Malaria can be very serious and is found in many African countries, as well as Southern Asia, Central America and South America.

There is no vaccination against malaria, so it's very important to take anti malarial medicines. These reduce your risk of getting malaria by about 90%. They should be taken before you travel, while you are away and for up to four weeks after you come back.

You catch malaria from mosquitoes so you should also protect yourself from bites by sleeping under nets, keeping skin covered and using insect repellent.

You will not be immune to malaria if you have previously visited or lived in the country you plan to visit. You need to protect yourself every time you visit a country where there is malaria.

There are many different types of anti malarial medicines. In Southwark, they are available either over the counter from a pharmacist or through private prescription from a GP. Anti malarial medicines are not available on NHS prescription, but your GP can advise you on what medicine would be best for you and what the side effects may be. They can then give you a private prescription if required, so you can get your medicines from a pharmacy.

The NHS recommends that you get your medicines in the UK before you travel, as medicines abroad may be fake or sub-standard.

If you get ill while you are away, get medical advice straight away. It is important that malaria is diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

Courage in conflict

A WELCOMING salvo of strafing and bombing from a squadron of planes sets a scene of soon-to-come sadness and sorrow. You realise that Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children is not going to be a day in the park but more a lifetime in Hell, writes Michael Holland.

As the ordnance fell so did my spirits because even in his lighter moments Brecht is a miserable git.

When the play begins we are told that we are in 17th century Sweden, a Protestant Superpower having a go with anyone who thinks they’re hard enough (Brecht was writing this 1939 play while in exile from Nazi Germany, hence the sounds of modern warfare).

Mother Courage (Josie Lawrence) spends her life following conflicts with her cart and family in tow, selling supplies to the soldiers.

Along for the ride is the camp prostitute, Yvette, in her red dress and ripped stockings; a chaplain, and the General’s cook, always on the look out for a capon. The play is about survival, and surviving at all costs. Mother Courage loves her children and does her best to teach them to be good, honest people but one by one they fail to heed her warnings and go off to carve out their own paths in life.

Yes, Mother Courage has to lie and cheat, and swap flags to appease whoever is winning - Even the Chaplain exchanges faiths when the Catholics approach - but everything she does she does for the good of her children, trying to protect them from the harsh severity of life. But keeping them safe is difficult when death is potentially around very corner.

This rambling epic traverses

You couldn’t plan it, yet Claudio Macor’s The Tailor-Made Man, the true story of heartthrob actor William Haines, returns for its 25th anniversary with a complementary fanfare of Hollywood scandal all over the media.

But even without the real life homophobia and unwanted sexual assaults this play would be a success on its own merit as there is so much to like about it: the clever writing that truly evokes the era it is set in; the superb acting, the tale of tribulations overcome, the clever set and the direction from Bryan Hodgson, writes Michael Holland.

In the 1920s - and for decades after Hollywood found a pretty face, signed them into a long contract and set about making that face a star by manipulating the media and forcefeeding them to a paying public. But

The Tailor-Made Man is both an exposé of all that was hypocritical about Hollywood and about a man who stayed true to himself and conquered all adversity. In a poignant dénouement we discover what happens after the final scene ,which left us with plenty to discuss on the way home.

Eye-Bulging Glee of Matilda FOR ANYONE that doesn’t know the story, Matilda, our young heroine, is a bright, well read, intelligent and articulate five year old who for all of the reasons above is held in contempt by her telly-addicted family.

Added to that is the dreaded, sadistic headmistress Miss Trunchbull and her medieval punishments. Matilda, however, ultimately finds herself blessed with telekinetic powers, a kind hope in Miss Honey and a way to fight back against the vile adults surrounding her. Now celebrating its sixth year on the West End stage, with numerous awards under its belt, Matilda is going as strong as ever, writes Rosie O’Connell.

Dennis Kelly has adapted Roald Dahl’s story wonderfully, maintaining the heartfelt humour and tenderness found in Dahl’s words while also balancing his famous grotesque vulgarity. Tim Minchin’s score and lyrics are clever and witty and blooming catchy too, from the tongue in cheek show opener ‘Miracle’ to the anarchistic punch of ‘Revolting Children’ to close, it would be a struggle to leave the theatre without at least humming along.

The child cast are foot and pitch perfect throughout, all gleefully dishevelled and devious. Matilda of course stands out with her perfect balance of solemness and mischievousness exemplifying the line ‘sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty’. David Shannon is appropriately horrifying as the monstrous Trunchbull, and Tom Edden and Marianne Benedict are again appropriately vile as Mr and Mrs Wormwood. The choreography is sharp and exuberant, with its ensemble numbers packing a punch and with set pieces such as swings and piles of books and alphabet blocks used to full effect.

What is achieved here is taking a story that is so familiar to so many and turning it into a new experience all over again. I myself grew up reading and rereading the book and watching and re-watching the film adaptation of Matilda and yet I was happily surprised at every turn of the production. It allows you, even as an adult, to watch with that eye-bulging glee, joy and wonder that you don’t often get when you’re grown up.

‘Our Joe’ - The Camberwell man who ran Birmingham and the British Empire

AFFECTIONATELY NICKNAMED Our Joe by the Victorian public and more recently named by Prime Minister Theresa May as an inspiration for leadership (and possibly Brexit), Joseph Chamberlain was born in Camberwell as the son to a successful shoe manufacturer, and was the 19th century leader who made Birmingham boom and invested heavily in the British Empire.

Father to Austen and Neville, Joseph was at the forefront of British history for better part of seventy years through his belief that cities should have the power to make momentous decisions, and that trade was the best way to spread wealth. A belief grounded in the idea that an industrial strategy must link to education and skills that serves the whole population and not just a few.

A sentiment that later influenced his role as Colonial Secretary.

At the start of his political career, Joseph led a successful three year term as the Liberal Mayor of Birmingham from 1873, starting ambitious projects aimed at improving all aspects of life for its citizens. These ranged from largescale housing developments and free primary education, to a reliable supply of clean water from the Elan Valley. Beyond his time as Birmingham’s Mayor, Joseph made attempts to be elected as a Member of Parliament. His first attempt in Sheffield in 1874, while still Mayor, was met with fierce opposition with accusations of republicanism and

atheism being made against him - to the point that dead cats were thrown at him while he made speeches. He eventually came third.

His second attempt in 1876 was

more successful in Birmingham running unopposed. Despite being a member of the Liberal Party, he was not, as others expected, an antiImperialist. As such he was fond of

the idea of protecting British overseas interests but placed an emphasis on “justice in pursuit of those interests”.

When he was elected to

Westminster he had earned himself a reputation as a radical social reformer. He campaigned for social reform as a Liberal from 1884 before joining the Tories in coalition with the Liberal Unionist party in 1886. A move he did in part to try to transform the British Empire into an “efficient economic federation”.

By 1895, Joseph became Colonial Secretary after turning down senior government positions such as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary. As head of the Colonial Office, Joseph earned international recognition. He set about expanding the empire in Africa, the Americas and Asia by restructuring trade and building better relations with settler colonies. His vision was to establish the empire as a “federation of Anglo-Saxon nations”.

When he took charge in July at the age of 59, he was expected to govern more than ten million square miles of territory and 450 million people.

From the beginning he favoured investment in the tropics of Africa, the West Indies and other countries.

A lasting impact that Joseph had on the world, was his desire to treat tropical diseases that were being brought back to Britain by travellers and sailors. He therefore gave his support to Patrick Manson, who founded the world’s first medical facility dedicated to tropical medicine. The London School of Tropical Medicine, in Albert Dock Seamen’s Hospital, later became the Hospital for Tropical Diseases – which continues to treat patients today.

The Ivy has a reputation for highclass dining but it really has been open to all, allowing guests to walk in without reservations for breakfast, brunch, afternoon tea, a set price menu or à la carte. Its latest manifestation is in Bermondsey with fantastic views over Tower Bridge, The City and the Tower of London.

Our window table bestowed all of these on us.

On entering with Nina I could see the distinctive Ivy decor had been lovingly reproduced by Swedish designer Martin Brudnizki; the bright art nouveau/art deco extravagance was all there. The first of perhaps six different smiley, utterly professional servers led us to our table just before another brought menus and a third sparkling water. A fourth asked what drinks we would like to start with so I ordered a Victorian Fizz, said to be widely enjoyed during the Victorian era and made with a Bermondsey Old Tom gin, grapefruit juice and soda with a quirky blood orange sorbet pegged to the glass that I ate while I sipped. Nina had a Miss Saigon that was concocted from all things Oriental: Rice wine, lychee liqueur and rose jam. Cheers.

The menu is something to be marvelled at, one where you want to try everything and have trouble deciding on one thing. Nina’s Steak Tartare was juicy and spicy and raw.

My Tempura Prawns sadly had the look and feel of Iceland about them.

They were okay and the dressing was really nice but I felt let down. There are better options that I will go for next time.

With the table umbrellas and outdoor heaters a few brave souls were facing the last gusts of Storm Brian. We actually asked for a door to be closed so they could face it without us. Plus I didn’t want the cold wind to chill the Argentinean Merlot we had ordered.

For a main course my partner had chosen the Line-caught Swordfish that enjoyed added flavour from the red pepper, chorizo and Padrón peppers. The fish was perfectly cooked, remaining soft and moist beneath the dark signs of chargrilling.

She had a side of Truffle and Parmesan Chips which I wasn’t keen on, but which she adored. I had the Slow-roasted Lamb Shoulder, a fallapart piece of meat with delicious hints of rosemary and mustard in the accompanying mash and gravy.

After those dishes we needed some time before we attempted dessert. We had watched them being delivered to tables and they were definitely worth waiting for. We finished off the merlot while Nina dithered over the menu again and again and again,

finally coming down on the side of the Apple Tart. It was the added Calvados Flambé that was the deciding factor. As she tucked in she swore that there was space dust sprinkled in it but I think it was having the lion’s share of the Argentinean red, and a dessert wine having effect that produced those fantasies. For me there was only one choice - the Chocolate Bombe. I had seen them go by and they looked good. It arrives as a smooth golden globe but as the hot salted caramel

sauce is poured on, the chocolate egg dissolves like some alien transformation, revealing the ice cream and honeycomb centre within.

It is a performance that deserves to be seen and applauded - and then devoured. Chocolate, caramel, vanilla, honeycomb... come on, what else do you need to know?

Yes we dined à la carte and we were spoilt, but The Ivy can be enjoyed for as little as £16.50 for two courses just like we had, or £21 for three. Spoil yourselves, I say.

Dean Harrison’s side suffered a blow in the 34th minute when Harry Draper was shown a straight red card and the visitors had to withstand real first-half pressure to go in scoreless at the break.

Despite playing with ten men, Fisher were completely transformed after the break and deservedly took the lead in the 61st minute. They had already gone close a number of times before Hamill jinked around a defender and was fouled, the midfielder then firing home his penalty to give his side the lead.

Fisher sealed a superb win two minutes from time after a swift counter-attacking move and Matthew Ramsamy was there to apply a clinical finish.

ALMOST 1,200 people turned up at Champion Hill on Tuesday night, the majority of them to show support for Dulwich Hamlet as the club deals with off-field problems, and they weren’t disappointed as the hosts ran out 2-0 winners over Harrow Borough.

It was an impressive show of support on the same night as England played Brazil, and second-half goals from Ashley Carew and Marc Weatherstone sealed a fifth successive league win.

Dulwich didn’t produce their most convincing display on Tuesday, but it’s games like this that will determine whether they are in the promotion mix later in the season and they showed they have the resilience to dig out a result when they are not at their fluent best.

Still, they could have gone ahead in the second minute but Gavin Tomlin’s effort went wide before Michael Chambers headed over.

ast week, the Millwall Supporters Club released a statement concerning an Extraordinary General Meeting it had called for November 28 at which it intends to dissolve the organization and its constitution.

The MSC stated that it was taking the step after the decision by the Millwall FC board to take its £1 share of season ticket sales and membership and instead place it in a fund overseen by Millwall’s Fan on the Board.

Micky Simpson (FOTB) spoke exclusively to the News after being contacted for more details surrounding the development and to answer questions that have been raised by Lions fans.

What was the arrangement the MSC and Millwall FC had in terms of funding?

The MSC receives £1 from Millwall FC for every season ticket holder and member with the purpose that this is used by the MSC to benefit the fans.

Why is the MSC dissolving?

The Millwall FC board has recommended that the money should be managed by the Fan on the Board. Some of the MSC committee members felt that this meant that the MSC was no longer a viable group and that they would have to dissolve.

You were also involved in the running of the Association of Millwall Supporters (AMS). Is this a coup by the AMS to take over the MSC? No, this definitely isn’t an AMS coup

to take over the MSC! AMS is basically a campaigning organisation now. We were very successful with what some Lewisham councilors have called our grass-roots campaign to put a halt to Lewisham Council’s intended Compulsory Purchase Order, which included local homes and businesses around The Den. We accept that fight isn’t over and the AMS will continue that fight, but the AMS is completely separate from Millwall FC. AMS is not there as an official supporters club to deal with day-to-day issues between the fans and the club.

This isn’t a takeover of the MSC by the AMS.

It has been suggested by some fans that you are becoming too close to the club and no longer putting the fans’ interests first. How does this fit with the club deciding that all future requests for fan funds should go through the Fan on the Board?

I am on the board, but I am not a club director and don’t want to be as that would make it difficult for me to challenge the board of directors for the benefit of the fans.

In my current position I regularly challenge the board on the issues which affect the fans, or push the board to do things which are for the fans’ benefit.

For example, I have persuaded the board to recognize that both [of the fan forums] House of Fun and Millwall

I pressed the CEO to argue for a change of a kick-off time or as in the case of Cardiff FC v Millwall FC to fight for the kick-off time to remain at 3pm despite the request from the police to make it an earlier kick-off.

I have also been behind the introduction of the Fans Panel which takes some of the decision-making in relation to club bans away from the club and places it in the hands of the panel.

It all depends on how the MSC dissolution pans out, but I’m now drafting up a new constitution and new ideas for the next supporter group, in whatever format that turns out to be, either a new version of the MSC or something different.

I’m very keen to hear from the fans about their ideas and how they would like the new supporters group to work.

I’ve created a survey so that the fans can give me their views on what they want in the future.

But I’ve already got ideas for away transport deals and general help regarding away travel (trains, hotels etc.), better benefits for fans becoming a member such as ‘Bring in a mate for £1’, better use of social media to communicate with the fans and obtain fans’ opinions through such as a Q&A, but likewise keeping some of the traditional ideas such as programme newsletter or updates.

I will never forget my brief that I am the fans’ Fan on the Board and this role is for them and to increase communication between the board/club and the fans.

I won’t please everyone, I understand that, but I will try. I promise I will do the best I can do and if I need any help I will find the right team to make it happen.

MILLWALL STRIKER Jamie Philpot is putting thoughts about his Lions future to one side as he concentrates on trying to fire Woking into the play-off spots.

Philpot is on loan at the National League club until January 2 and is finally enjoying a consistent run of senior first-team action.

The 21-year-old has played 21 times for Woking this season – more than in his senior career before this season.

Philpot scored his fifth goal of the season – his fifth in his last ten games – as Woking produced one of the shocks of the FA Cup so far this season by beating League One Bury 3-0 away on Tuesday night in their first-round replay, which was secured after the forward’s equaliser in the first game.

Philpot’s current Millwall deal expires at the end of this season, and he admits the pressure is on to impress at Woking in the hope that his parent club will take up the option of extending it.

Philpot was only eighteen when he scored on his Millwall debut in the last fixture of the 2014-15 Championship season, but suffered an injury in the same game that kept him out for a number of months and hindered his progress.

A loan move to Bromley last season didn’t work out, but it’s a different story this campaign as not only is he a regular in manager Anthony Limbrick’s side but he has also played in a number of different positions, something he feels will give him a better chance to break into Millwall’s first team.

However, he isn’t taking his eye off the present as he focuses on improving Woking’s league position and his own game.

“This move was all about getting minutes, it’s essential for my development,” Philpot told the News this week. “My first loan didn’t go according to plan, so this was all about getting my head down and learning.

“When I came here I started off as a number ten, then moved to nine and, because we’re down to the bare minimum with injuries, I’m playing as a number seven on the right [of a 45-1 formation].

“I would have liked more goals by this stage, and I’m targeting another three or four before January.

“The style of play is pretty similar to Millwall’s. We’re not defensive, we try to press the ball high then get it into wide areas and get it into the box. It’s a little bit different playing as a seven, being more involved in the build-up play and making sure I know my job. I’m learning to play a new position and that’s good for my development.”

Philpot is one of a number of Millwall players out on loan, with the likes of Sid Nelson and Harry Smith also in the last year of their contracts.

do as well as possible to put themselves into a position to earn a new deal.

“There is an option for Millwall to extend my deal but I know I need to perform every week and score fifteen to 20 goals this season.”

That could be at Woking, or there is the possibility that Philpot could return to Millwall in January and wait to see if a loan move to a club in the Football League materialises.

“I’d like to play in League One or League Two,” Philpot says. “I’ve set personal targets until January and I want to make sure I hit them.

“This has been my longest spell of consistent football in a senior side. I want to focus on now and make sure I keep working hard.”

Philpot is enjoying his time at Woking, and he has admitted he was surprised by the professionalism of the set-up under Limbrick.

That’s not a slight on the club, who have one of the smallest budgets in the division and finished eighteenth last season.

Limbrick, 34, has one of the more interesting coaching backgrounds.

He left Australia when he was eighteen to try to make it as a

professional footballer but a broken leg two years later ended that dream.

He focused on coaching, and went from roles with the likes of Boreham Wood, Wingate and Finchley to the FA and then Southampton’s academy, where he worked under Mauricio Pochettino.

Limbrick joined Woking from West Ham’s academy in the summer, and has so far exceeded his consolidation brief with a young squad.

“It’s very similar to Millwall, which I was surprised at,” Philpot admits.

“We’re in at ten o’clock in the morning and the staff have already set everything up by that stage, in terms of the training pitch.

“It’s laid out what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, what we need to improve on from the last game.

“We do video work. He debriefs us after the last match and we look forward to what we need to do in the upcoming match, analysing opponents.

“I wouldn’t say the football is more physical at this level but people have misconceptions about the nonleague. We proved against Bury, a League One side, when we had three or four injuries and still managed to

get a result against them that we could match them.

“I think that misconception has changed. It’s not just lumping it forward, it’s a lot more tactical and technical.”

Limbrick, who increased the number of training sessions this season, also works one-on-one with the players.

“I listen to the manager, he’s had the experience of coming from Australia and then working with Southampton,” Philpot continues.

“I’ve got to be more ruthless in my game. Although I’m not the tallest of people I have to compete for everything and we work on that. Ever since that was highlighted I have been winning the majority of my duels.”

The young squad means there is not a core group of senior players as at Millwall leading and counselling a younger group. That means every player takes responsibility and results in a high level of competitiveness in training.

“It’s completely different in that sense from Millwall,” Philpot says.

“At Woking there is only one proper senior player in terms of experience,

the average age is 21 or 22 and we all learn off each other.

“There isn’t one particular player you would speak to for advice. It’s about making sure that, for me for example, in training I’m better than the other striker.”

Philpot is also in regular touch with his parent club, and is at the training ground on Fridays when the under23s don’t have a game. Otherwise he’s at the gym doing strength work.

The talks with Development Squad boss Kevin Nugent have also been important this season.

“He gives me lots of advice on how to improve and keep going forward.

The message is about being resilient, doing the right things and my time will come, not getting downhearted if things are rough.

“Mentally that’s been important for my development, and I feel I have become a better player.

“This season is for me to prove myself, especially to Millwall.

Hopefully by next season I’ll have got a new contract.

“There are lots of good players at Millwall, especially in my position.

I’ll worry about that in the future.

“I’m only thinking about now.”

The Black Cats are rock bottom of the Championship, with just one win in sixteen games.

They haven’t won a league game at the Stadium of Light since December 16, 2016, a run of nineteen fixtures.

Simon Grayson lasted just eighteen games in charge, the fifth Sunderland manager to have been and gone since Neil Harris took over at Millwall.

The News spoke to Sunderland Echo sports journalist Richard Mennear (pictured) this week to find out if there is any sign of their situation improving.

What went wrong for Simon Grayson?

With just one win in fifteen league games, Grayson paid for the bad run of results with his job minutes after the 3-3 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

A major factor in his downfall was his failure to sort out the defence, Sunderland shipping on average two goals a game.

Constant tinkering with tactics and team selection and the number one spot also did little to help build a cohesive Sunderland side.

The likes of Peter Reid, Kevin Phillips and Kevin Ball would be welcomed by a large section of the Sunderland support but it doesn't appear they are going down that route.

They are keen to appoint an experienced manager. Aitor Karanka would tick a lot of boxes as would Paul Heckingbottom.

Ally McCoist has been mentioned too but his name has divided opinion.

Onyedinma has started just four league games this season due to Wallace’s form and Lions boss Neil Harris preferring Steve Morison and Lee Gregory up front.

Shane Ferguson is also in contention to replace Wallace, who will miss games at home to Hull and against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Millwall’s international contingent were back at Calmont Road late this week. George Saville played in both Northern Ireland’s fixtures against Switzerland, Conor McLaughlin in one.

Ferguson, Jordan Archer and Aiden O’Brien didn’t see any action.

Shaun Williams is back in training but is still a number of weeks away from a potential return, with Byron Webster the

rank bad defending.

Whoever comes in needs to coach the living daylights out of the defence and go from there. Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem.

Sunderland have a decent squad on paper.

What does the new man need to do to get the best out of them?

Inspire some confidence. The squad is in a bad habit of losing at the moment, especially at home.

Getting that first home win is absolutely key.

That first victory on home soil would relieve a lot of pressure and give the players a much-needed lift.

Former Black Cats and Millwall midfielder Alex Rae said there is real ‘apathy’ at Sunderland. Is he right?

It is hard to disagree with that. The fans are rightly fed up and frustrated with how events at their club have unfolded on and off the pitch.

They deserve far better.

The Stadium of Light is a real asset when Sunderland are playing well and winning but at the moment it is an easy place to play for the opposition.

Q

Is there a fear that Sunderland could drop through the divisions, like Blackpool or Coventry, for instance?

The threat of relegation into League One is certainly a very real prospect.

We are now a third of the way into the season and Sunderland are bottom, three points adrift.

There’s still time to turn it around, of course, but that needs to happen very soon if Sunderland are to avoid a second successive relegation.

Q

Millwall have a very clear direction with this board and manager. Sunderland appear rudderless. Big question, but what needs to change?

Ownership. Owner Ellis Short would consider selling if a credible offer comes in for the club. Ultimately, little will change until a new owner and fresh investment comes on board.

That is no secret. The timescale for when – or if – that happens is the big question.

Finally, do you see them ending their long winless run at home this weekend?

Everyone connected with Sunderland is praying for a win this weekend.

If a new manager is appointed in time then that would give everyone a huge boost and hopefully end this home hoodoo hanging over the club.

Sadly, few would bet on Sunderland winning at home given their dismal form at the Stadium of Light over the past twelve months.

“You’re going to get injuries throughout the season, and to key players like Shaun and Byron,” Thompson said.

“There are going to be little knocks and people missing games but that’s why we have a little bit of a bigger squad for people to come in and make an impact.

“We’ve adapted quite well but it will be good to see those players back on the pitch.”

Billy McKinlay – who had been in joint-caretaker charge of Sunderland with Robbie Stockdale – left this week to link up with David Moyes at West Ham. They have been better at the other end, where they have scored three more league goals than Millwall this campaign (20).

Former Lions striker Lewis Grabban has eight of them, in the twelve Championship games he has played since joining on loan from Bournemouth.

Sunderland are three points from safety and in danger of a second successive

relegation if their home form does not improve.

“It’s been tough, we haven’t got the results we wanted obviously,” Grabban said. “We just have to stick with it, the league still hasn’t created a massive gap so if we can get a couple of wins we’ll be out of the relegation zone and can

begin looking upwards.

“We’ve been a bit unlucky in some aspects but there are little mistakes that we need to cut out of our game, we need to have a bit more responsibility in all areas of the pitch. If we’re able to do that and put the good bits together for the majority of the game then we’ll be fine.”

SHAUN HUTCHINSON admitted he is “desperate” to get the winner at Sunderland this weekend – because he grew up supporting Newcastle.

Hutchinson was born on Tyneside and less than fifteen miles separates St James’ Park where he used to watch games as a youngster from the Stadium of Light where he will be with Millwall this weekend.

The Lions are still looking for a first win away from home this season, while rockbottom Sunderland haven’t won on Wearside since last December.

The Black Cats sacked manager Simon Grayson after just fifteen league games in charge, with Billy McKinlay and Robbie Stockdale in joint-caretaker control for their 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough before the international break.

McKinlay has since left to join David Moyes at West Ham, and as of Thursday Stockdale was still in temporary charge.

And Geordie Hutchinson would love to extend the Sunderland’s misery on their own patch and get that first victory on the road for his side.

“I’ll always enjoy playing there because you’re desperate to be the one to get the winner,” Hutchinson said. “I’m sure there will be a few Geordies in the Millwall end

hoping for an away win.

“The majority of my friends and people I grew up with are Newcastle fans, but a couple of people I’ve met along the way support Sunderland. One of my friends texted me this week to say he’s going to be in the Sunderland end because he’s a fan.

“I’ll probably get a few last-minute calls from people wanting me to sort them out with tickets for the away end, to do anything they can to cheer against Sunderland. A lot of my family who can’t normally get to games will be able to go because it’s so close so it’s good for them.

“It’s one of the fixtures I do look for when they are released.

“I watched them against Middlesbrough not so long ago, they had a new manager who freshened up a few things and they looked a bit more solid. It’s definitely going to be a harder fixture than maybe it would have been a few weeks ago. That’s nothing against Simon Grayson, it’s just that sometimes when there is a change of manager that’s what happens.

“It’s going to be a tough one. We haven’t won away all season, they haven’t won at home all season.

Hopefully we’re the ones that change that and not them.

“They’re still a quality of team. We had the same thing at Fulham after relegation when they brought in loads of players. It takes time for people to bond and everything to get going.

“I can see from a distance what they are going through, it’s probably quite hard.

“But individually they’ve got some talented players and game changers.

“Our home form has taken a bit of pressure off. If the home form wasn’t as good then the away form would be more of an issue.

“If we can put chances away and pick up more points on the road then it will work the other way, it will take off the pressure at home because at the moment we feel like it’s almost must-win at The Den, especially then when you get defeats like the one against Burton. It really hurts because you know how important it is.

“Football is crazy and who knows, we could win the next three away and lose the next three at home. We can’t wait to get that first away win and push on from there.”

Although they have struggled for away points in 2017-18, Millwall take the jointbest defensive away record to the north east, against the side with the joint-worst leakiest defence.

Hutchinson believes it is not only Jordan Archer and the back four that deserve credit for Millwall’s defensive security this season.

He said: “It’s the whole team, the attacking players might get stick for not putting the ball into the back of the net but when we get a clean sheet it’s because they’ve done a hell of a lot of work.

“After the game when you look at the statistics you can see how much running the forward players have done.

That’s a big part of why we’ve been so solid defensively and kept clean sheets.

“It’s nice for the goalkeeper and back four to get the credit but the whole team deserves it.”

Millwall’s attacking pair this weekend is likely to be Steve Morison and Lee Gregory, both of whom are still to score away from The Den this season.

But Hutchinson believes it is unfair to single them out for criticism for their goal-scoring form when they offer a lot in general play.

“As a fan, and I was the same when I was younger, you don’t notice the things that are often the most important,” Hutchinson explained.

“The silky skills when someone nutmegs a defender and puts it into the top corner is the stuff that stands out.

“But maybe people don’t notice the work that a player has done for the other 80 or 85 minutes to stop the other team using their strengths.

“The two up top for us and the wide players rough up opponents and that makes them uneasy. It takes the pressure off the rest of us because the opposition has to defend that bit more and tire more quickly.

“That’s key to the way we play and helps us massively to get results.”

The Lions haven’t won away since their 3-2 victory at Scunthorpe in May that sealed their place in the League One play-off final.

They have seen some crucial decisions go against them this season, including Steve Morison’s disallowed goal at Nottingham Forest on the opening day and at Brentford when Lee Gregory swept a loose ball home at the same time as the referee blew for a penalty, which Gregory then missed.

Millwall lost to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in their last away game when Harris thought they should have earned a point on chances created.

Harris’ side have the joint-best away defensive record this season – seven goals conceded in eight games matching fifthplaced Middlesbrough and leaders Wolves – and they have also created numerous scoring chances but not taken them.

This weekend, the Lions travel to the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland haven’t won in almost a year.

Something may have to give on Saturday.

“It hasn’t been a problem up to now and I’ve not focused on it up to now,” Harris said about Millwall’s winless away run.

“It’s tough to win away from home at this level.

“Until [Sheffield Wednesday] we had the best defensive record away from home in the division, conceded the least goals, only five. It’s a good achievement from us and two takes us to seven and I’m sure we won’t be far behind top spot still.

“We’re not conceding many goals and the games we’ve lost we’ve lost by the odd goal. We should have won at Forest, should have won at Brentford.

The performances have been good, we’ve created a lot of chances in every game.

“The shot count is really good but we just need to be better in front of goal.”

SHAUN WILLIAMS is “at least a week” ahead of schedule as he recovers from a knee injury – with the midfielder set to be available for the packed Christmas programme.

Williams, 31, is back in training this week though he won’t be taking part in any contact work for two weeks.

The midfielder was expected to be out for three months after suffering lateral ligament damage in his knee against Reading on September 26.

Millwall face three games in six days from December 23 when they travel to Derby followed by Wolves on Boxing Day and then QPR, both at home.

Harris praised Williams’ “professionalism” that has put him in the frame for those fixtures.

“Shaun saw the specialist on Monday and he’s back outside on the pitch,” Harris said. “He’s in the position exactly where we hoped he would be.

“The reason he is in that good position, in good health and his knee has healed and his quads are strong, is because he has worked so hard.

“That’s enabled him to be at least a week head of where he should be

because of his professionalism.

“It’ll be nice for everyone to see Shaun back out on the grass.

“He’s not going to be fit or available in the next couple of weeks. He has to do straight-line running, diagonal running to test and strengthen the knee. He’ll go back into full training for a week and then get some minutes in an under-23s game. Once he does that he becomes available for the squad and certainly for the Christmas period.” Centre-back Jake Cooper is available again this weekend after serving a one-match ban for his sending-off at Sheffield Wednesday.

a tough selection call after Tony Craig did little wrong against Burton two weeks ago.

“I have the opportunity to put Coops back in,” Harris said. “He’s another one that the rest has probably done him good, from being out of the team to then playing a lot of games in a short space of time.

“Tony was very assured against Burton, as you’d expect from the club captain. There is certainly a decision to be made at centre-back for Saturday.” * Meanwhile, defender James Brown, 19, has signed a new deal with the club until 2020. He is currently on loan at Carlisle.

Philpot, 21, is currently on loan at National League side Woking until January 2.

The forward signed a two-year deal in the summer of 2016 after making his debut at the end of the 2014-15 season when he scored with his first touch in senior football at Wolves.

An injury picked up in the same game kept him out for a number of months and Harris admitted that and inconsistent form has contributed to limiting him to just twelve senior Millwall appearances.

But Harris has been impressed with Philpot’s form at Woking and urged him to sustain it to be in with a shot of earning a new deal.

“Jamie has had a tough couple of years, a disappointing couple of years,” Harris said. “Young players progress and stutter at different stages of their careers.

“Jamie had a great progression between the ages of sixteen and eighteen and then stuttered the last couple of years through injury and lack of form.

“He’s gone out on loan to learn the game, to learn in some ways how fortunate he, as one of the younger players at the club, is to be involved here.

“He’s done well but there is a long way to go.

“In terms of contracts for the youngsters, some will be sorted out before others. Jamie is one who has just got to get his head down and work hard. Doing it for a couple of months doesn’t make a career.

“We’ve been really impressed with him over the course of the last six or seven weeks.

“He’s got to keep doing that for a sustained period before we make a decision where his future lies.”
