This is no normal repair job - it’s life and death!

UR HOPE today is that Jeanene Fraser is finally able to bath her terminally ill son in the comfort of her home – after an agonising nine month wait for the hot water to be fixed.

This is a mother who is dealing with the unthinkable, anxious beyond belief that a simple cold could end the life of her boy.

In his short three years of life little J’ssiah Brown was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of one, then his brave six-year-old brother Kye stepped forward to donate his bone marrow, but J’ssiah’s tiny body reacted badly, his organs collapsed and he was in a coma for three months.

The family, then living in temporary accommodation in Croydon, were devastated when, after he miraculously pulled through the coma, he contracted pneumonia.

Wandle Housing was able to do just one thing for this family and it did – offering them a comfortable home in Camberwell, specially adapted to meet J’ssiah’s needs, who by that stage was extremely weak. They gave his mother her dream home and she was delighted that finally something had gone right, allowing her to give her boy the care he needed - that is until she turned on the tap to find no hot water.

From day one of moving into the brand new development in Warner Road this has been a problem and despite constant attempts to solve the problem, the family have been left with no hot water for nine months.

There are always going to be glitches with new homes and Jeanene does not deny that the housing association did try to fix the problem.

But she did not think she would have to wait so long and potentially put her little boy’s life at risk by ferrying him back and forth to her mother’s in Croydon, just to give J’ssiah a bath.

Wandle told the News they only had two reports of this complaint on their system over the last nine months and made several attempts to fix what turned out to be a complicated fault with how the system was initially installed. They also claimed that, according to their system, there was some hot water coming out of the kitchen taps.

An engineer who had been out to the property four or five times told the News although hot water came out for a few seconds, it then ran cold, and this had been the situation every time he had gone to Jeanene’s property.

The point here is surely that J’ssiah’s situation is urgent. Not having hot water could have killed this little boy if he had got a cold as a result of traipsing back and forth to Croydon every night, or caught an infection from not having running hot water to keep clean.

If Wandle knew about this problem nine months ago – how has the problem been allowed to go on for so long? Why was it not flagged up as a priority? This is no ordinary repair complaint – a child’s life was at stake. Contrary to what Wandle’s system has recorded, Jeanene says she has spoken to her housing officer every other day to ask when the hot water would be fixed, until she has gone out of her mind with frustration. If staff at Wandle were aware of this situation from day one, there is no excuse for it not having been resolved sooner.

This week Wandle has seemingly fixed the problem – hopefully for good this time – and will now be housing a very grateful family in a new property which is perfect for their needs.

We can only hope that this situation is an important reminder that people like Jeanene and her desperately poorly little boy are not numbers on a system or complaints to be logged, they are people in need of help.

A PLAN to build a floating swimming pool in Greenland Dock has been slammed by Rotherhithe residents.

The controversial development, which would see the heated facility installed in the water by the Surrey Docks Watersports Centre, is currently in its consultation stage.

Rotherhithe blogger and activist Andie Byrnes said that many residents objected to the project on three counts:

noise, heritage and environmental impact.

She said: “Sound travels at a lunatic rate over water, so there would be a diabolical noise if this goes ahead. The swimming pool would ruin the inherent peace and tranquillity that attracts people to the area.”

She also said that a swimming facility would be a break with the dock’s tradition. She said: “The dock dates back to 1699 and has had many transformations since then, always keeping its shipping heritage. The swimming pool would change the

Bells end after ringing for 24 hours non-stop

CLERGY WERE left wringing their hands this week after their church bells went rogue and rang around the clock.

Much to the annoyance of local residents, the bells at St George the Martyr Church in Borough High Street were ringing for more than 24 hours as engineers attempted to fix the faulty clock chime.

THE MAN accused of shooting dead Ben Purdy choked back tears this week as he told of his failed ambition to join the British Army.

Andrew Bayne, 37, denies he was responsible for the killing but admits he was at the scene and heard a gunshot.

The Rotherhithe resident claims that Ben’s girlfriend’s ex Michael Bagnall, 22, brought the gun to the scene but did not accuse him of carrying out the shooting.

Bayne has been giving evidence with the help of an intermediary because he has learning difficulties.

But prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC suggested Bayne was “pretending to be more stupid than you really are.”

Mr Aylett added: “Anyone who knows you would know you like dressing up in army uniform and had a collection of guns.”

Bayne replied: “Yes they were locked in a cupboard.”

Mr Aylett also referred to Bayne having photos of guns on his phone and his “dearest wish to be in the army.”

Bayne told the court: “I am sorry, I wanted to be a soldier for this country and make my family proud instead of people calling me a spastic.

“My wish in life is to join the army, to be proud I'm a soldier, to be proud I'm British. I don't want to be a bum.

“They take the p**s out of me every time. It's not fair, I'm just trying to be normal.”

The judge Christopher Moss QC decided to rise early for lunch as Bayne became emotional.

Earlier Michael Magarian QC, representing Bagnall, suggested Bayne had “a desire to prove yourself” and added: “That's why you did what you did that day.”

Bayne replied: “I did nothing like that.”

Bayne allegedly murdered the 18year-old apprentice plumber after

intervening in a love triangle dispute involving his nephew.

Bagnall allegedly recruited his uncle, Andrew Bayne, his cousin Reece Bayne, 19, and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named, to track down Ben and his friends.

When they did, Andrew Bayne shot Ben in the head and threatened to gun down one of his friends, the court heard. Ben was pronounced dead in hospital the following day.

Michael Bagnall and Andrew Bayne, of Alpine Road, Rotherhithe, Reece Bayne, of Concorde Way, Rotherhithe, and the 17-year-old, all deny murder.

Michael Bagnall, his 19 year-old sister Lee-Ann Bagnall and Anthony Bayne, both also of Alpine Road, Rotherhithe, all deny affray relating to an earlier confrontation.

Michael Bagnall, Reece Bayne, and the 17-year-old all deny conspiracy to commit assault occasioning ABH. Andrew Bayne denies possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

The trial continues.

Council warning over fake penalty charge notices

A FRAUDSTER is attempting to scam Southwark residents with fake penalty charge notices, the council has warned.

Some residents have received fake letters purporting to be from Southwark Council, in which they are asked to pay £130 for a parking violation.

One letter, seen by the News, includes a close-up photo of the

registration plate of the recipient’s car.

It claims that the car was spotted parked illegally in Denmark Hill and instructs the owner to stump up the fictional fine using a “dedicated payment line.”

The council highlighted the fact that the logo for parking enforcement organisation NSL was used on the letter, despite the fact that the council actually uses a different contractor.

The matter has been reported to the police.

THE MOTHER of a terminally ill toddler has said having no hot water in their home for nine months could have killed her son.

Three-year-old J’ssiah Brown was just one when he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was put on steroids, underwent intensive chemotherapy treatment and had a bone marrow transplant from his older brother. Despite a temporary recovery, he relapsed in December and by March his illness was classed as terminal and he was given months to live.

After being moved out of temporary housing in Croydon where J’ssiah had contracted pneumonia, into a brand new property in Camberwell in January, mum Jeanene Fraser thought all her dreams had come true. Finally she had a specially adapted flat with disabled facilities to help her care for her very weak baby son and keep him free from the infections and germs which could kill him.

But she soon realised there was no hot water coming through any of the taps or the shower, leaving her unable to give J’ssiah the two baths a day he needs.

She reported it to Wandle Housing Association, but nine long months later, the problem had still not been fixed.

mum’s place in Croydon just to make sure J’ssiah and her other two children are kept clean. But doctors have advised her that taking J’ssiah, who has no functioning immune system, back and forth as the weather turns colder is likely to cause him to develop a potentially fatal illness.

“If J’ssiah catches a cold I’ve got to rush him to hospital. He can’t adapt to temperatures the way we do. He can’t be in and out of the cold like this.”

“I’ve got a really sick son and I don’t even have hot water. It’s absolutely crazy,” she said. “[Wandle] is putting me in a situation where I’m actually risking his life. Not having hot water could actually kill my son.”

The day after the News contacted Wandle, an engineer replaced the taps at Jeanene’s home. As we went to press, there was finally hot water coming from the bathroom and kitchen taps, though the shower was still to be fixed.

After several previous unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem, Jeanene is not convinced the issue is resolved, but says if she were to have hot water it would be “like a Godsend.”

“We’ve got all these people who want to help because they don’t know how long J’ssiah’s going to be here but what we really need is just hot water in our home. That would be amazing.”

A Wandle spokesperson said their engineers had been out to fix the issues with the hot water supply on a number of occasions, but the problem kept reoccurring. After carrying out work to the property this week, they claim the problem is now fixed once

Since J’ssiah relapsed, Jeanene has been fundraising to get her “cheeky little boy” the pioneering proton beam therapy overseas which could save his life.

The treatment, the doctor’s fees and the travel would cost £150,000 and the family has so far raised just over £22,000 towards their target.

“They kept saying he’s not going to make it but he pulled through,” she added. “They thought it was a miracle because they didn’t think he would survive.”

J’ssiah was given months to live by doctors in the UK, who cannot give the poorly little boy any further chemotherapy, as his body will not be able to cope with the toxins.

Founder of charity for ex-servicemen gets biker escort to Palace to receive his MBE

THE PEARLY King of Camberwell and Bermondsey enjoyed “the perfect day” last week, when he was accompanied to Buckingham Palace by a motorbike escort and honoured by the Queen.

Jimmy Jukes MBE was royally surprised when, just prior to entering the ceremonial ballroom, he was informed that Her Majesty herself would be handing out the honours – a rare privilege.

The founder of charity Homes4Heroes told the News: “We never knew until we got there. We were in the reception next to the ballroom and the man in charge of us said ‘Good news, Her Majesty will be carrying out the ceremony today.’

“It made my day, although it was nerve wracking. I had seen the Queen but never met her, so the closer it came to being my turn, the more nervous I got.”

In the end, he needn’t have worried. The

Queen took a particular interest in his charity, which rehomes homeless exservicemen, and the pair enjoyed a long chin wag.

Jimmy said: “We ended up having the biggest chat out of anyone there. I explained what we’re doing, with limited funds, and she was very concerned. She had obviously been prepped but she knew about it and was very interested.”

The Pearly King arrived at the royal residence on a bright yellow trike – a dramatic entrance which required special permission from palace security.

He said: “Most people arrive in a Rolls Royce or a limo but I wanted to do something different. I don’t think that’s ever been done and I don’t think it will happen again.

“We were escorted there by bikers from Ride of Respect, which is another charity that helps ex-servicemen and women. As well as them, we had Pearlies there waving us in and Chelsea pensioners.

Afterwards we had a party in Battersea. It was the perfect day.”

Police look for man 9 years on

BERMONDSEY: Police are looking for a former Bermondsey resident who absconded while on bail, after he was arrested on suspicion of possessing/making indecent images of children in 2006.

Ali Hasan Soyer, 59, is wanted for questioning by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse unit, who have appealed to the public for help after exhausting all lines of enquiry.

The Cypriot featured on Crimewatch earlier this week, nearly nine years after failing to return to a police station after finishing bail.

BERMONDSEY MP Neil Coyle is taking the message of a grieving mother straight to the Prime Minister, after joining her on a march against knife crime on Saturday.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, walked alongside Mariama Kamara (aka Baby Leigh) and over a hundred supporters on the route from the home of sixteen-yearold Mohamed Dura-Ray to the spot where he was stabbed to death on Monday, September 14.

When Mr Coyle asked Mariama what she would say to David Cameron, Mo’s uncle Alan said she replied: “Increase the police. Maybe if there were more police someone would have been able to save my son’s life.”

Police were called to Canterbury Place on Monday, September 14 shortly before 11pm to a ‘large disturbance’ and found Mo suffering

from multiple stab wounds. London's Air Ambulance attended but the Globe Academy student was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the light of proposed cuts to Police Community Support Officers, some of whom used to be based around the corner from where Mo was killed, Mr Coyle says he is taking that message to the Prime Minister and Home Secretary Theresa May. “Mariama is right that further cuts to the police will have consequences. I’m

going to ask the Prime Minister and Theresa May to meet with Mariama to discuss her concerns,” he said.

Mr Coyle has also sent letters to every household on the Kinglake Estate and to those properties looking out on to the crime scene in Canterbury Place, to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Speaking at the march he said: “This brutal, outrageous death of a sweet boy was a terrible thing. Mo was robbed of his potential, of everything he was able to achieve. Look at this family and their

grief. There are possibly people right here who know what happened and who must come forward. Do not be afraid. If you know who did this, please come forward so that no other family need experience this.”

Mr Coyle’s letter to potential witnesses is designed to reassure the young people present at Mo’s murder and their parents that it is possible to give information anonymously.

Borough Commander Zander Gibson is making arrangements to visit Mariama and pay his condolences in person and discuss plans for a possible knife amnesty, to echo the Mo Foundation slogan, ‘drop the knives, save lives’.

War hero statue to be unveiled

THE MEMORIAL statue to Bermondsey war hero Albert McKenzie will be unveiled next Friday at a special ceremony in Tower Bridge Road.

The tribute to 18-year-old McKenzie, who fought valiantly during a WW1 mission in Zeebrugge Harbour in Belgium, will be shown to the public for the first time on October 23.

The ceremony will begin at 11.30am in the junction of Tower Bridge Road and Grange Road with a performance of war-era tunes by a military band.

The statue will be officially unveiled at midday and will be followed by a number of speeches from a number of people involved in the project.

Among the speakers will be Albert McKenzie Memorial Fund chair Paul Keefe, Albert McKenzie’s greatnephew Colin McKenzie, former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Sir Simon Hughes and the Governor of West Flanders.

Paul Keefe said: “It’s been five

years of hard work and planning, so we are all really looking forward to it.

Everyone came together and we can’t wait.”

McKenzie achieved legendary status in Bermondsey when he and his comrades stormed the Zeebrugge port’s heavily guarded harbour walls in 1917.

The group were bombarded with shells and bullets after attracting enemy attention, and many British troops were killed or withdrew.

McKenzie, however, kept going and made it through enemy fire to the harbour wall – which featured an iron ring that is being used in the statue.

When his rifle was shot out of his hands he had to resort to physical combat.

In a letter to his brother, he recalls how he was left with no alternative but to start “pushing, kicking and kneeing every German who got in the way.”

He made it to safety and was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross, but sadly died of influenza while recovering in hospital in October that year.

‘Robbers stole £37,000 worth of watches in sixty seconds’ - court

A GANG of smash and grab raiders on motorbikes stole £37,000 of Rolex watches in under 60 seconds in a “well planned and audacious robbery”, a court heard.

Four men dressed in motorcycle clothing and helmets used a sledgehammer to break the reinforced glass windows of Attenborough Jewellers in Bethnal Green in October last year.

It is claimed the raid was planned by six men, including 21-year-old Jamie Hull, of Anchor Street, Bermondsey Michal Ogun, also 21, of the Albion Estate in Swan Road, Bermondsey, and a 23-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also from Bermondsey.

Stunned shop staff set off the panic alarm to bring the shutters down but the robbers managed to wedge them open with what witnesses described as a “three-foot mallet” before fleeing with three watches, leaving thousands of

pounds worth of merchandise strewn across the pavement.

The Old Bailey heard how three members of the gang were spotted getting into a black Mitsubishi and a silver Toyota Corolla near the scene and minutes later were pulled over by police near Rotherhithe Tunnel.

The driver and passengers Michael Ogun and a seventeen-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were arrested with a rucksack containing Attenborough Jewellers Rolex watch boxes, it is claimed.

In his opening statement, Prosecutor Roger Smart QC described the smash and grab as a “well planned audacious robbery.”

Hull and the 23-year-old man both deny conspiracy to commit robbery.

Ogun also denies four counts of robbery before the Attenborough Jewellers raid.

Jurors heard how the seventeen-yearold and Ogun had already pleaded guilty to the conspiracy to rob the jewellers.

The trial continues.

Lucky students to study courses including medicine and law

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has awarded eleven students with scholarships to help with their university education.

The students, (seven of whom are pictured, right) who are now studying a variety of courses, from law to physics and mechanical engineering to medicine, were chosen according to their contributions to Southwark as a community, as well as their academic achievement.

Recipients need to be living in a Southwark household where the income is less than £22,500 per annum to be eligible .

The council’s scholarship scheme is now in its fifth year, and has already supported 37 students since 2011 to attend university and study the degree of their choice.

Samantha Hunter, who is now studying Physics at Imperial College, said: “I am the first in my family to go to university and this scholarship means I will be able to concentrate fully on my studies and not have to worry about the financial aspects.

A FILM documenting the moment when two pensioners were forced to move out of their home of 30 years on the now demolished Heygate Estate has gone on sale.

Larry and Janet Move Out tells the story of the Colfers’ last weeks in the Chearsley block, when they had to wash with wet wipes after the heating was turned off.

Filmmaker Patrick Steel, 38, chose the Colfers because Larry worked on the construction of the estate and they were one of the first families to move

in after it was finished.

News readers have their say on hit BBC sitcom Cradle to Grave

LAST WEEK the News asked readers for their reaction to ‘Cradle to Grave’, the sitcom produced by Danny Baker about his life growing up in 1970s Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

It seems that the programme is both achingly funny and accurate, with a huge response from people who have been transported back in time by the BBC show – especially those featured in the show itself.

Stephen Micalef, who was Danny’s best friend growing up, thinks he is represented in the show by the troublesome teenager Steve Churcher.

He said: “I think that’s me – although I wasn’t involved in criminal activity like him. Danny was my best friend until we were around 19 - he only lived three doors away. As soon as we could walk and talk we were friends.”

Stephen says the reality of the show can be somewhat hit-and-miss.

“His mother Betty is portrayed so well it’s uncanny, it’s like a cardboard cutout. The show tends to make his dad a much more clownish character, though.

“Some things do strike true, like Danny walking in with s**t on his shoe.

That was a big problem then, there was loads of it about.”

He also dismissed Danny’s boast of disappearing into the photography dark room with an attractive teacher as a

However, he did add: “We went to concerts with her and would drink Newcastle Brown Ale. There was a bit of flirting - but we were very young.”

Jackie Buckingham, another family friend of the Bakers, also sees a lot of truth in the programme – especially when it came to Danny’s dad and his industrious, if illicit, ways.

She said: “Spud was always coming to me and asking me to shift some products for him. The house was always full of duvets – they were everywhere!

“My dad and him were like glue. My mum used to look out and say ‘Oh, there goes Spud and your dad, drunk again!’ Before they came back, my brother used to fill the scotch bottles

with tea. They’d come in and say ‘Oh, let’s have a nice little tipple’, and it was tea!”

John Shaw, whose parents Walter and Lily were portrayed in two episodes, said he was “addicted” to the show and “the wonderful people portrayed.”

He said: “The actress who plays Danny’s mum has got her to a T and Peter Kay has got Spud down too – it’s only the haircut that different.

“My dad and Spud were inseparable, and there were a few stories that I’m surprised haven’t made it in yet. I’m sure there’ll be included in the next season. We used to help him shift things, like curry powder, which stunk up my house for months!

“Every single thing I’ve seen is true. I

think ‘Mud Island’ was down where Millwall play now – it was a good fun place. I once found a dead body there, which may make it into an episode.”

Mud Island, the decrepit, sinking row of houses where Danny and his mates used to hang out, was the setting for one of the sitcom’s more serious moments – the death of Danny’s friend ‘Martin’.

However, while Martin died during the 1970s in the show as a result of a rotten floor, the real life incident was slightly different.

Colin Peterson said: “I remember the sad death of Steven Russell, who lived in Silwood Street. He was accidentally killed by falling brickwork in derelict houses in the Bolina arches in the ‘60s.

He was bird nesting with friends.”

Another News reader claimed that, while the houses were certainly derelict, they were demolished long before the show was set.

Lorraine Dobson said: “‘Mud Island’ was all the roads that Millwall football ground is now on. The houses were demolished in 1962 because they were sinking, hence the name Mud Island. I remember it was sinking so bad towards the early ‘60s that a marble would roll across the room all on its own.”

Whatever the specifics and however accurate the show really is – Danny Baker is the only person who truly knows – what cannot be debated is how the sitcom has captured the imagination of Southwark residents and reminded them of a bygone era.

A MARKET trader has vowed to “fight till the end” after Southwark Council voted to move his stall from where it has stood for more than twenty years.

Yassine Melki supports his wife, three children and his mother from the proceeds of his bedding and soft furnishings stall in Moncrieff Place, Peckham.

After planning permission was granted to convert the top floor of the building next door into a gym, Yassine was told he would have to move his pitch away from the busy footfall of Rye Lane to make way for a new disabled entrance way.

Yassine collected over 3,000 signatures on a petition to stay put, but a decision was taken at the council’s Licensing Sub-Committee meeting last week to relocate his pitch.

“I’m really upset and disappointed,” said Yassine, who told the News he would “fight till the end” to keep his stall where it is, as he believes moving away from Rye Lane will threaten his business.

Corinne Turner, of the Rye Lane Traders’ Association, described the decision as “a sad reflection of a system that has been unable to look at the best way to design Moncrieff

Pregnant woman rescued from blaze BERMONDSEY: A pregnant woman was rescued from a fire in flats on Monday afternoon.

Two women were rescued by fire fighters at 12.40pm via the internal staircase.

The women were treated for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service.

The fire within the residential flats on Enid Street damaged both the second and third floors of the block.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

The day before, 21 fire fighters were called to a fire at a block of offices and flats in Pocock Street.

Part of a four roomed flat on the second floor was damaged. The cause is under investigation.

Public inquiry into buy-out of council flats resumes

A PUBLIC inquiry into the council’s attempted compulsory purchase of properties on the Aylesbury Estate has resumed this week.

The four day hearing was postponed in April after the leaseholders’ action group were left with no legal counsel.

It began again on Monday and Tuesday this week, hearing arguments from leaseholders, residents, experts and the council on whether the £750million scheme to demolish and rebuild the Walworth estate should go ahead.

Objectors say the compulsory purchase of estate properties is “forcing us out to make way for luxury housing that none of the existing tenants or leaseholders will be able to afford.”

A planning inspector has been hearing testimonies from leaseholders, tenants, expert witnesses and council officers and representatives of Notting Hill Housing Trust, which is redeveloping the estate. The hearing was expected to conclude this week and the inspector will then submit a report to the Secretary of State for Communities, who will have the final say on whether the compulsory purchase orders can go ahead.

£91k raised for Guy’s cancer centre SOUTHWARK: Over £91,000 was raised for Guy’s Hospital’s new cancer centre last weekend when hundreds of people took part in a gruelling ‘urban challenge.’

Fundraisers took part in a 2.4km run through the streets of Southwark, cycled 15km on exercise bikes and then climbed to the 29th floor of the tower at Guy’s – the tallest hospital in the world.

After completing the 648-step climb, Bermondsey resident and cancer survivor Terry Weston said: “It was quite difficult, but I was very pleased I got to the top without stopping.

“I feel really passionate about Guy’s Cancer Centre and am thrilled I was able to show my support by fundraising like this. It was really worth doing.”

The new centre will provide support for 2m people in the south-east of England, bringing research and treatment under one roof. The appeal to help fund the centre has already raised £5m of a £15m goal.

‘WE’VE LOST £1,000s SINCE OUR PHONE LINES WENT DOWN’

SHOP OWNERS in Southwark Park Road claim they’re losing thousands of pounds in business a week due to a problem with their phone lines and internet connections.

Many businesses have experienced periodic or total failure of their telecoms down the Blue, after a wire was accidentally cut during maintenance works to the road at the end of September.

Glyn Jones, co-owner of Lilly Raes cobblers and key-cutters shop, said that BT were taking a “liberty” with business owners due to the slow speed of the repairs.

He said: “No-one can ring us up for enquiries or directions. It looks bad, people just think we’re engaged. I’d be frustrated if I was a customer.

“Also our card machine isn’t working. It’s having a real effect and has cost us around £1000. Even though there’s a cashpoint down the road, people can’t be bothered. We had someone leave after planning to buy £140 worth of products because he didn’t have any cash on him.”

said that the situation wasn’t acceptable and that they would be seeking compensation from BT. She said: “They are not helping and apparently it will take them another two weeks before they get it fixed.

Ersin Coskun, manager of the neighbouring Times Pizza, is also suffering due to the outage.

He said: “We hugely rely on our phone working, for collections, orders and deliveries. We have three phone lines and we’ve diverted them to a mobile, but obviously that’s not working as well and people are not getting through.”

K Kirubanandarajah, manager of newsagents AKR Superstore, estimated that the problem was costing his business £1000 every week.

He said: “We make a lot of money from bus passes and that was down for a long time. We cannot do card payments or phone top-ups. It is costing us a lot of money, but they won’t be able to fix it until the twenty-sixth.”

A spokesperson for BT said that they were investigating the matter.

Head ‘delighted’ as new school can now be built

DULWICH: A head teacher is “delighted” the new school he will lead can now be built after a plot of land was signed over.

Last week the News reported the NHS had finally signed over two plots of land on the Dulwich Hospital site so that plans for the new Charter East Dulwich secondary school could go ahead.

Two out of three pieces of land on the site have now been signed over to the Education Funding Authority, with the third plot to be transferred once the new health centre is built and health services moved over.

Alex Crossman, head teacher of The Charter School East Dulwich, said: “This is a seminal moment for us. We are delighted to be able to offer comfort and security regarding our permanent site to the huge number of local families who have already applied for places at our school.”

JOHN RUSKIN Primary School received a commendation at a glitzy award ceremony hosted by comedian David Baddiel last month.

The Camberwell school was honoured on September 24 in the Primary School of the Year category

at the Shine A Light Awards, which celebrated schools that show “innovative work, inspirational individuals and excellent practice.”

They were complimented for their creative support for children with speech, language and communication needs – something Baddiel said was a “true inspiration.”

He added: “I would like to say well done to all those shortlisted, who have

shown true grit and determination to better themselves and others.”

John Ruskin Primary School teacher Suzy Gregory said: “We are delighted to have been highly commended for the Primary School of the Year category.

“For us, the award represents recognition for all the hard work the whole team puts into supporting our children on a daily basis.”

The gesture was announced at a meeting last week, which came weeks after the News published a feature detailing the continued struggles of businesses in the area two years after a flood engulfed the area.

Thames Water said that the contribution could help deal with short-term cost issues that will not be covered by the eventual insurance, such as loss assessor fees.

Tamara MacFarlane, who runs the bookshop Tales on Moon Lane, said: “It’s welcome but it will be interesting to see how it will work in the long term. I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but every day we are losing money. We’re still trying to settle our original debt.”

Giles Gibson, of the Herne Hill Forum, said that the money would “give the area a boost.”

He added: “Let’s be clear though – this donation is only a fragment of the

£2.3m bill still yet to be paid out, which is having a catastrophic effect on our local traders.”

Helen Hayes MP, who has been working with Southwark Council Leader Peter John on the issue, reemphasised the fact that, despite the gesture, the job was “absolutely not done.”

She said: “It has taken much longer than anticipated for Herne Hill to get back on its feet. A lot of people are still suffering from the flood.

“It’s really regrettable that some of the insurance companies have taken so long to pay up and it’s good that Thames Water have recognised the issue.”

A previous contribution of £100,000 was made by Thames Water previously and was used in sprucing up the area with banners, artwork and trees.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We recognise that the burst has had a much more significant impact on the area than anyone would have predicted at the time, and understand local concerns. We are therefore making a further goodwill contribution of £200,000 to the community fund set up by LB Southwark.”

The combined heat and power plant, proposed by developers Lendlease, will deliver zero-carbon, affordable heat and hot water to residents.

Around 3,000 homes in the planned development will benefit, as well as 1,000 homes neighbouring the site.

This latest step in the £1.5bn regeneration scheme, which will be built on the site of the old Heygate Estate, will also deliver a “new community heart for Elephant and Castle.”

South Camberwell by-election taking place today

THE COUNCIL by-election for the South Camberwell ward is taking place today.

Community activist Octavia Lamb is standing for Labour, communications specialist and TackleAfrica charity founder Ben Maitland for the Lib Dems and cycling activist and East Dulwich Estate Regeneration Project Team chair Eleanor Margolies for the Greens.

Transport consultant Chris Mottau was nominated by the Conservatives and anti-crime campaigner and former Labour councillor Stephen Govier by the All People’s Party.

Ladbrokes have deemed Ms Lamb the clear favourite to retain Labour’s seat with odds of her victory coming in at 1/20.

Ms Margolies is out at 7/1, Mr Mottau 16/1, Mr Maitland at 50/1 and Mr Govier the long-shot at 100/1.

The by-election, which is understood to cost around £20,000, was sparked when Labour’s Chris Gonde stepped down last month, citing a poor work-life balance.

He said: “It has been a privilege and an honour to be a Southwark councillor and to represent residents in South Camberwell for the past eighteen months.

“I am proud of what Southwark Council is doing to deliver a fairer future for all, and am pleased to have played my part in improving the borough and the lives of the people who live here.”

Southwark Council Leader and fellow South Camberwell councillor Peter John thanked Mr Gonde and said that he had “been diligent” and “worked hard for local people.”

Attacker sentenced to seven years and deportation

A MAN has been jailed for seven years after he “permanently disfigured” a security guard at St Thomas’ Hospital.

The e-book following the adventures of Patch the Night Light has been released to raise awareness and funds for Ronald McDonald House.

The charity provides free accommodation to families whose children are staying in nearby hospitals. Their flagship house at Guys and St. Thomas Hospital was set up twenty years ago with another property in Camberwell supporting families visiting King’s College Hospital since 2010. The e-book campaign also aims to get more parents reading with their children.

Hamlet fans show they’re all heart in £4k fundraiser

DULWICH: Dulwich Hamlet fans were celebrating on and off the pitch earlier this month when they raised £4,181 for charity at a special fundraising match.

The league game on October 3 was promoted as a special ‘pay-whatyou-want’ fixture, where fans chose their own ticket price.

The final tally was announced this week, with all proceeds going to Walworth charity Cooltan Arts and the British Heart Foundation.

Dulwich Hamlet community spokesman Mishi Morath said: “I shouldn't be amazed, but each and every time we have an appeal for something I really am amazed at the response from our fans. It really makes me proud to be a Dulwich Hamlet supporter”

BERMONDSEY: The Post Office is proposing to move its Southwark Park Road branch 120 metres down the road.

Florin-Mihai Badea, of no fixed abode, bit the top off the victim’s finger on April 19 this year.

The 29-year-old was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent and racially religiously aggravated common assault at Inner London Crown Court on October 5. After serving his sentence he will be deported back to his native Romania.

The court heard how Badea was seen loitering in the hospital and charging his phone from an outlet.

Two security guards asked him to leave when they discovered that he was not a patient, staff member or visitor.

According to police, Badea “began shouting, swearing and racially abusing the guards, who then attempted to escort him out of the hospital.”

One of the men put his hand over Badea’s mouth when the irate man began to spit. Badea then bit down on the man’s finger, refusing to release for around three minutes.

A SOUTHWARK charity leader has said hit out at news that the council will start charging for blue badges from next year.

Local authorities have been allowed to charge for the special parking permits since 2012, but Southwark has only just taken the decision to levy a £10 fee for the badges as of April 2016.

“As pressures are growing on our finances, we have reluctantly decided to introduce a £10 charge which brings us in line with neighbouring boroughs,” said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark’s cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion. “Unfortunately, severe budget reductions mean that

councils have little choice but to charge for services that we would prefer to offer for free, and I hope that residents will understand the reasons for our decision.”

Once a badge is purchased it will last for three years, but Patrick Horan, chair of the Southwark Disablement Association, said this was just the latest way government spending cuts were hitting disabled people.

“I am afraid it’s always disabled people who bear the brunt of all cuts, as we are the easiest to cut even though we are the lowest percentile of income,” he said. “Subsidised transport is very important to disabled people. Ten pounds over three years does not sound a lot but if you add it to the previous cuts made to Taxi card by this council, it all adds up to keep the disabled a prisoner in their home.”

Save Southwark Woods (SSW) campaigner and comedian, Lewis Schaffer, who described the council’s decision as “devastating”, will be compering the stand-up gig to mark one year since the grassroots campaign was launched.

"It is tragic that Southwark councillors have chosen to sweep away these beautiful wild spaces and replace them with a bleak, desolate

cemetery on such an unrealistic scale,” said the Nunhead resident.

The group is now considering legally appealing the decision and is also waiting to hear from the Department of Communities and Local Government, after they requested the planning application be called in.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for environment and public realm is resolved that continuing to provide burial space within the borough, which is due to run out by 2017, is a matter of “common decency”.

The Save Southwark Woods benefit will be held at The Ivy House in Stuart Road, Nunhead from 7.30pm on Sunday night. Tickets are £10, free entry for under 16s.

ANY CHILDREN across Southwark have just started secondary school and I wish them all the best for their future.

It is impossible to overstate how important it is that when it comes to secondary school, a child is safe, happy and learning. They need to be able to develop all their talents and abilities and get the qualifications they need to take them on to their next stage.

And schools is one of the biggest issues parents raise with me when I meet them out and about in my constituency. Many parents are more than happy with the school their child goes to. But all too often I meet parents who say, while they were perfectly happy with the local primary school, they are not happy with the local secondary school, they've applied to schools further away but did not get in.

So we should all be concerned about what it's telling us about the local school if the local parents don't want to send their children there. There are a number schools for children living in Camberwell and Peckham which are popular with local parents and which are over-subscribed - meaning they have more applications than they have places including Kingsdale, Sacred Heart and the Charter School. But 6 schools have fewer first choice applications than they have places. That's not because there aren't any children in the area, it’s because the parents are choosing not to send their children there.

It’s no good the school and Ofsted saying it’s a great school and the parents have just "got it wrong". If there's something about the school that is worrying the parents then the school should address that. The local school needs to command the confidence of the local community. If there are fewer children applying than there are places, they should take that seriously, understand the concerns of parents and put it right. Filling up your places with children who have made it their second or third choice doesn't solve the problem.

In some areas the overwhelming majority of parents get their first choice of school. I Central Bedfordshire for example 99.7% of parents got their first choice of school.

Whereas in Southwark just 59.6% of parents got their child into their first choice of school. This in not just a problem for parents in Southwark but in London as a whole, and particularly inner London.

When Labour was in government we set up the London challenge which did so much to improve schools. The Government should do something like that again, not wash their hands of parents’ concerns. And while the education of London’s children is crucial, Mayor Boris Johnson has done nothing about it. I hope the next Labour mayor will.

And I want Ofsted to take this issue on board when they inspect a school, looking not just at exam results but also at parental preferences. I’m calling on the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to conduct an inquiry into why so many children across London don't get their first choice of school.

We need more graves one way or the other

IN REGARDS to your article (‘Controversial woodland cemetery plans voted through’, Southwark News 8th October 2015) about woodland space for new burials, as Vice chairman of the London association of funeral directors, I have brought this to the attention of my members at our last three monthly period meeting on Monday, October 5th .

Most London funeral directors are concerned about the problem of the lack of cemetery space that so many boroughs will be faced with in the near future, for residents not only of Southwark, but also almost every in London.

I have been informed that Wandsworth will be introducing a new system for the reclamation of a grave where that grave has not been used for over 75 years. The council will painstakingly have to try to contact the next of kin to allow this to happen, but it is a way forward in helping the

bereaved to inter there loved ones rather than go for the option of cremation.

Maybe Southwark Council will endorse this option in the near future.

If not the people of Southwark must support the council in trying to find more green space for the burial of their loved ones.

I can understand that the re-use of an exisiting grave will not be everyone’s choice. However, it is a thought for a way forward in helping our people go ahead with their wishes of internment.

Good on council for free fireworks display

I THINK that it's a great idea by Southwark Council to make this year’s firework display in Southwark Park a free ticketed event, especially after last year’s fiasco.

I do, however, hope that they publicise the fact that it will be a ticket only event better than in a small article tucked away on page 18 in Southwark News.

It needs to be a full page advert giving people notice well in advance of the event. Otherwise there are going to be thousands of people turning up at the gate with no tickets and it will be even more chaotic than last year!

Also, I hope that they provide a way for people (like the elderly) who don't have access to the internet, to get tickets.

Should the council have given £1million to Tate Modern?

THE DECISION by Southwark Council’s Cabinet to contribute £1m to the Tate Modern without any consultation and being more specific about the additional

benefits they have secured for Southwark residents, has raised an unfortunate question mark over the legitimacy of the donation and the Cabinet’s judgement.

Last month the Cabinet agreed to give the final million pounds of the capital works to deliver the Tate learning suites in the Tate Modern extension project, but claimed not to have enough time to carry out a public consultation exercise. This despite the report stating that the council had been discussing the contribution “for some time”. For this and other reasons Liberal Democrat councillors attempted to call the decision in for further scrutiny.

As one of the ward councillors for the Tate Modern, I am hugely proud to have one of the most successful modern art galleries in the world in our borough. The issue here, however, is not the gallery, it is whether at a time of reduced resources, this is the most appropriate and effective way of spending public money, especially at a time when we are making cuts to our own services.

For these reasons I decided to carry out my own consultation of residents in my ward to find out their views and whether they were for or against the contribution. In total 58% (36) were against, 37% (23) were in favour (although just over a 1/3 of those in favour also had reservations about either the size of the contribution or the lack of consultation) and 5% (3) were neutral.

While it is right for the Council to look beyond our formal statutory responsibilities, and support the valued cultural institutions in our borough, this doesn’t negate the need to be accountable for public money and carry out meaningful consultation with residents. The failure of the Cabinet to ensure this happened has sadly made the decision more controversial and probably reduced public support for the contribution.

S WINTER approaches, it’s time for those at greatest risk from flu to protect themselves and their families with a free flu jab or nasal spray.

Flu is a highly contagious infection that anyone can catch, and it can be a really serious illness for some. Those at greater risk from flu include people aged 65 or over, pregnant women, and those with health conditions such as asthma, chest or heart complaints, and diabetes.

Flu can also be a very serious and unpleasant illness in children as they suffer the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills and aching muscles. Parents of children aged two, three and four can help protect their little ones from flu with one simple, free nasal spray. It’s a quick, painless and effective way for children to be protected without the need for injections.

Flu can increase the risk of developing more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and can make existing conditions much worse.

It can really knock you off your feet and make it hard to look after the kids or go to work. In the most serious cases, seasonal flu might land you in hospital. There was also a spike in the death rate recorded for in England and Wales in February this year. It was one-third higher than the previous year and many experts believe major contributing factors were flu and the cold weather.

The flu vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu, so even if you had a jab last winter you need another one this year to stay flu safe.

If you’re in any of the ’at risk’ groups, the flu jab is completely free and is a safe way of protecting you and your family in a matter of minutes.

The best time to be vaccinated is at the start of the flu season in October to early November, so it’s good to get in early and get flu safe in time for the winter.

The art of Brilliant London ROTHERHITHE artist Ed Gray's Limited Edition Print exhibition, London's Brilliant Parade, opened at Searcy's club on the 38th floor of the Gherkin on Friday night. The show also saw the launch of Gray's painting of London jazz legend Tubby Hayes, writes Michael Holland...

Collectors and fans of the artist’s work enjoyed his many and varied scenes of London set against the city skyline and had the chance to revisit some of Gray’s early work in this semiretrospective.

scenes of places we know so well have always been captured moments of extreme busy-ness and people’s journeys through our city, but now they have a new, multifaceted feel to them, perhaps showing how crowded London has become, with the many protagonists almost fighting for attention in a capital where so many get lost, rather than a small group of individuals making up the compositions of earlier times.

The forgotten story of Hossein Hegazi: the Dulwich Hamlet FC striker who became ‘the Father of Egyptian football’

THERE IS a road in downtown Cairo, just a long goal kick from the banks of the Nile, named after a long-forgotten Dulwich Hamlet player, writes Joey Millar....

Hossein Hegazi Street was the site of a number of protests during the Arab Spring in 2011 and again earlier this summer, but the remarkable history of the street’s footballing namesake began over a century ago in the leafy confines of Champion Hill.

Jack McInroy, known as the ‘Hamlet Historian’, told the News: “I was doing some research in the 1990s and came across a line about Hussein Hegazi, an Egyptian striker. I had been supporting Dulwich Hamlet since 1981 and had never heard of him.”

Jack scoured newspaper archives for old match reports and was surprised to find accounts of an extraordinary talent and character - but mystery surrounded Hegazi’s life after Hamlet.

At a loss, he finally rang the Egyptian embassy in London, with little hope that they would have any information on a pre-war amateur footballer plying his trade in a south London suburb.

He said: “The man on the phone told me ‘Hossein Hegazi is one of Egypt’s greatest ever players.’ I couldn’t believe it! I thought: why don’t we know more about this guy?”

That Hegazi was forgotten about by Dulwich fans for so long is a travesty, for his story is as dramatic as any in the club’s long history.

As a teenager in his small Egyptian town of Kremlah, Hegazi reportedly practiced his accuracy by seeking out peasants carrying jars over their heads.

The routine that followed rarely altered: Hegazi would take pot-shots from afar, the jars would smash, the women would erupt and Hegazi’s wealthy – and apparently patient – parents would stump up some compensation.

He arrived in London in 1911 to study engineering and was quickly snapped up

by Dulwich Hamlet.

He was a novelty in more ways than one. While he was Hamlet’s first African player, the young striker was also lithe and quick, a stark contrast with most centre forwards at the time who were built like (and played with all the subtlety of) a brick outhouse.

From the get-go he was a crowd favourite, slaloming his way through opposition defences with an ease that bordered on disdain. Match reports in the local press were admiring: “a shining light”, “splendid”, “wonderful.” It was no surprise when professional clubs came knocking.

Just weeks after making his Hamlet debut, Hegazi was invited to play a Football League match with the professionals at Fulham. True to form, he

“The man on the phone told me ‘Hussein Hegazi is one of Egypt’s greatest ever players.’ I couldn’t believe it! I thought: why don’t we know more about this guy?” found the net at that level too, scoring on his debut in front of a delighted Craven Cottage crowd.

He was immediately invited to join up with the club the following weekend but declined, preferring to reward Hamlet’s faith in him.

He said: “I was in a difficulty. For I wanted to play very much in League

football, and at the same time I did not want to leave Dulwich Hamlet who have been very good to me. So I have decided to play for the Hamlet. I am sorry if Fulham are disappointed.”

A war of words broke out between the two clubs, with each side accusing the other of ruining the spirit of the game.

The end result, however, was that Hegazi

was staying with the pink and blues.

He spent three seasons at Hamlet, interspersed with spells with the London FA XI, the University College London team and Millwall Reserves.

Incredibly he won no trophies during his time in Dulwich, but he did enjoy success on the club’s frequent tours abroad, which included a famous victory over the Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.

In 1914, with the rumblings of war growing, Hegazi left Dulwich and returned to Egypt.

He arrived a star and is today seen as responsible for the escalation of one of world football’s most passionate rivalries: the cross-town Cairo derby between Al Ahly and Zamalek.

Somewhat bizarrely, given his loyalty in

England to Dulwich, Hegazi flitted back and forth between the two teams seemingly on a whim, once leaving Al Ahly because their new stadium didn’t have a bar area for him to play billiards in.

There are reports of hordes of fans following him from club to club, with each move switching the rivalry’s intensity up a gear. His influence cannot be understated, and as the rivalry grew, so did the sport in Egypt.

While he may now be known across Egypt as ‘the Father of Egyptian football’, it is heartening to see that he is also once again regarded as a hero in Champion Hill too.

BLOODY FOREIGNERS come over here, win our Masterchef and then start taking over Brixton with their Japanese Soul Food restaurant where a pie ‘n’ mash shop used to be! What a cheek! Yes, so let’s take our collective hat off to American Tim Anderson, the youngest ever winner of the cheffing show, who has done just that, writes Michael Holland...

Okay, so opening up a new restaurant in Brixton that is not serving jerk chicken and curried goat is not as chancey as it would have been a few years ago, because the place seems to have morphed into London’s major pop-up hub for restaurants, but Brixton is holding off total-gentrification for now and you still get more people shouting at traffic there than any other inner-city area, so there will be some opposition.

Having opened just two weeks ago, Nanban has already attracted a good customer base that fills it up very quickly. Kay and myself were seated upstairs in a booth and seeing the original flooring there took me right back to when I was eating pie, mash and stewed eels in the 1980s after visiting a friend in the local jailhouse.

Looking at the dish titles on the menu gave very few clues, neither did the Japanese descriptions underneath, and even when reading through the ingredients in English we were none the wiser. Onsen egg, seafood sawdust, gochujang, sanshö oil, daikon and yuzu-koshö schmaltz are not things that roll off the tongue with ease, or which I have readily to hand in my kitchen, but that makes not the slightest difference once you start tucking in and begin to experience the flavours created in Anderson’s kitchen.

A very smart and very knowledgeable staff took the confusion away by offering to choose for us, and ensured our every need was met. Each dish came with an in-depth preamble on what it consisted of and where each item was sourced and how it was cooked. All these mouthwatering overtures went towards building up each plate as an event.

Our taste buds were first tantalised with Karashi Renkon Chips, which were slivers of crispy lotus root with a miso mustard dip, two tastes that were new to me and one I shall be revisiting.

The palate was then excited with

a Quantum Brewing Murasaki Mild, an ale made with hints of sweet potato and Scotch Bonnets, and had the most delightful kick to it. The Chef has trained as a Beer Sommelier so knows his stuff, hence Nanban has a good selection of high quality beers sourced locally and further beyond, and ranging from an ABV of 3.1% right up to a head-spinning 13%.

Next up was a Brixton Market Salad, which is basically whatever looks good and fresh in the market next door and served with a Japanese dressing. I can confirm that it was good and fresh and nicely dressed. It came with the Yaki-Imo: Baked Sweet Potato with Ponzu Butter and Black Sesame Salt. Now, I have eaten sweet potato for many years but never baked like this. The texture was unbelievably soft; this was almost the highlight of the show for me.

Just as we polished off those dishes along came the Electric Eel, a smoked delicacy with slivers of apple, cucumber, pepper and something that goes by the name of daikon. Together, this concoction was the equivalent of fish Heaven.

United, it all combined to give a clean, fresh taste with the eel being the star on a pedestal of perfection.

The Japanese are big on fish and the next two dishes showed off what they do with it – or what Tim Anderson does.

The Crab Rangoon Age-Gyoza looked rather exciting, so I dipped one of the crab and cheese dumplings into its own accompanying sweet sauce (YuzuKoshö) and bit through a semicrispy casing and a soft inside that tasted of neither the crab or cheese it was made of, but as a whole was quite pleasant, which is absolutely fine, but the Mackerel Kake-ae was a cold dish that had much more tang amid its salad of daikon, carrot, cucumber and miso-sesame dressing.

With the table cleared of starters we had time to take in our surroundings while we waited for our main course. Nanban has kept the best of the original fabric of the building, highlighting the brickwork between the obligatory grey walls, and installed a mix of bar, table and booth dining, so is ready to cater for the lone diner as well as group get-togethers. A Shichimi Salad was brought as a palate cleanser between the courses: Pink and White Grapefruit, with a Honey-Mirin Dressing, Shichimi Chilli Powder, Cucumber and Crunchy Brown

Rice. This little miracle pressed all the right buttons.

After a decent interval since the numerous ‘Small’ plates, and with palates cleansed, the ‘Big’ plates came. I had a Mojiko Yaki-Curry which seemed like a team effort of an Indian chef, a Mexican chef and an Asian chef because it consisted of rice and curry sauce, with a deep cheese topping, an egg plonked in the middle to cook in the surrounding heat, and nice pickled ginger and crispy shallot embellishments. I’m sure this would go down very well in Osaka, but for me it was like three different dinners to be had over the course of a week rather than on one plate.

Kay, on the other hand, had the Sasebo Burger, an enormous entity that came with just about everything and meant I lost sight of her for a while when she disappeared behind it!

Along with 200g of prime beef in a brioche bun, there was slices of pork belly, American cheese, salad, pickled onions, burnt garlic mayo and gochujang burger sauce! It was a real piece of work and, after all those starters, it beat us.

In Nanban I was in Foodie Paradise but my friend Kay, alas, is not up for change or adventure when it comes to dinner. Kay’s idea of exotic food is anything from Iceland, and I don’t mean the country. After pushing food around her plate for an hour she left there feeling hungrier than when she went in, while I relished and enjoyed every dish. But that just meant all the more for me. She couldn’t eat the burger, as it was too rare, and she didn’t like the mackerel, as it tasted ‘like the seaside’. Precisely why I loved it!

Nanban is for those adventurous

types that are always looking for something new and distinct. Yes, there is a nod towards Brixton’s Caribbean history with a Curry Goat dish and even Ackee and Saltfish, but I’m betting it won’t be like anything recognisable to any West Indian folk who venture in.

And I see that has a good thing.

Who wants life to stand still?

Tim Anderson has paid his dues, he has done all the groundwork and this part of London can always do with something different, even if it is just to keep all the other places on their toes.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that because of private development related works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to temporarily suspend sections of parking bays in Rennie Street and relocate these suspended bays in Paris Garden.

Whilst works are in progress or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to stop, wait, load or unload in Rennie Street, between its junctions with Stamford Street and Upper Ground.

The loading bay located in Rennie Street, on the western side, approximately 15m from the junction with Stamford Street will be permitted a period of “20 minutes loading only” and “no return within 2 hours”.

An alternative route for traffic would not be required.

Whilst works are in progress or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, the following sections of parking bays will be allocated or suspended in Paris Garden:(a) East Kerb, the Northernmost Car Club Bay will be extended 5.50 metres southwards to a total length of 11.00 metres. (b) East kerb, the 22.00 metres stretch of Residents Parking will be extended 5.50 metres further South to accommodate the Car Club Bay. (c) West kerb, the section of 16.50 metres Pay and Display Parking will be extended 5.50 metres southwards to a total length of 22.00 metres. (d) West kerb, the three southernmost pay and display Parking Bays will be suspended, one of which will be re-allocated as per item 6c to this Order. (e) West kerb, five C1 Resident Parking Bays will be introduced at its Southern extreme.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

JUNIOR FOOTBALLERS from Docklands JFC have dedicated their latest win to the memory of Tommy Blackmore, who died in tragic circumstances in June this year.

The

20-year-old

passed

away

following an incident in Queen Elizabeth Street in the summer, and the News has been inundated with tributes to the popular Bermondsey man since that day.

The U14 Docklands side were keen to do their bit for Tommy’s memory last weekend.

The team’s manager Danny Belcher said: “We wanted to dedicate this win to the loving memory of Tommy Blackmore.

“The boys pass and move attacking football style was exceptional today and I know it was the type of football

Southwark AllStars U14s picked up their first win of the season against Bromley Rooks, putting behind them an opening day defeat.

AllStars dominated possession with Felipe Canas, Gibou Njie and Peter Read controlling possession in central midfield.

After fifteen minutes Canas put the AllStars ahead with a bullet of a free kick from 25 yards that bounced up in front of the diving keeper before nestling in the bottom corner.

Shortly afterwards AllStars doubled their lead as Michael Odutayo raced through the Rooks’ defensive line and smashed a curling shot into the top corner of the goal.

With five minutes remaining of the first half AllStars slipped up as Bromley scored to bring themselves back in the game.

With 20 minutes to go on the clock left winger Nasim Kherbouche and midfielder Yacub Hagi combined to create space for Kherbouche to finish from just inside the box.

Bromley converted a last minute penalty

but it was not enough to avoid defeat.

AllStars’ coach Luvumbu Ndombele said: “It was an excellent team performance from every single boy today.

“We were absolutely delighted with how we played, trying to keep possession, playing on the counter attack and defending bravely when necessary.

“Njie, Daniel Sesay and Odutayo all had good games, defensively we were strong all around. Canas was outstanding though, protecting the defence, bringing the ball out from the back, playing it simply – he had a bit of Alex Song about him.

“If we play this well each week we’ll have a very good season.”

On the pitch the Southwark side led from as early as the first minute when great work from Charlie MacDonald found Daniel Diangana whose drilled cross was met by Niyi.

John Hayley claimed a brace of goals with two first class poachers finishes with Joe Coombes assisting on both occasions.

Soon after Jodi Pipers crossfield pass found Diangana's run, leaving him to skip past three players before drilling a shot home from a tight angle.

In the second half Docks grabbed a fifth goal after Josh Hyam's left foot dipping shot from 20 yards hit the back of the net.

Athenlay got one back before Hyam and Teddy Belcher linked well down the right before finding Hayley at the back post where he completed his hattrick.

Fine goal keeping from Teddy White kept the visitors at bay before he was beaten for a second time, before Niyi finished off the scoring to leave the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey team at the top of their Selkent League table.

AN INJURY hit Docklands side fell to defeat last Sunday in their first away fixture this campaign.

In a game where both teams tried to play a pure style of football the visitors took the lead when a lovely cross from Victor Owusu which was met by Anthony Offiah who headed home.

The equaliser came just before the break after Docklands defender Sulaiman Bangura made an awful mistake.

Half time seemed to energise Docklands and a neat passing move between Mars Krasniqi, Joseph Earls and Archie Mehmet led to a switched pass to Anthony Offiah who chased down the ball and managed to cut the ball back to Krasniqi who slotted home.

The game then went very flat with Docklands looking tired and uninterested. Our Lady were first to most balls and seemed to have more desire.

Playing longer balls worked for the home side as they got two quick goals to edge ahead.

A change of formation from Docklands, in order to get back in the game, had the opposite effect when the home team netted their final goal of the day.

A club spokesman said: “The difference today was desire and Docklands must kick on from this if they want to get back to winning ways.

“Our next three games are at home and in two weeks they take on Our Lady Youth in the London Cup. “Hopefully the boys will step up for that game!”

Tigers meet Rugby legend

SOUTHWARK TIGERS players came face to face with rugby history last week when they met South African World Cup winner Chester Williams.

Williams was part of the victorious 1995 Springbok side and was one of the first black South Africans to establish himself as a regular member South African World Cup winner Chester Williams meets the Southwark Tigers

of the Rainbow Nation’s post-apartheid rugby set up.

The Southwark Tigers under thirteens took part in the Tour Aid Festival of Rugby in Esher, taking on other teams from around the globe, where they met Williams and former England international Pat Sanderson.

A club spokesman said: “They gave the Southwark Tigers some really useful tips before we played Global Warriors [a side coached by Williams].

“Although we lost our first match

playing on a full pitch that was floodlit, I think when I say this I am talking for the whole team that we had a wonderful time.”

The Tigers were sole English team in the international competition, which included teams from Africa, Asia and South America.

After losing to the ‘Gas three times last campaign Stansfeld boss Lloyd Bradley was given a pre-match boost when he named an unchanged line up for only the second time this season.

The home side were on the scoresheet after ten minutes when Mickey Smith scored an early contender for goal of the season.

A 25 yard screamer flew past the despairing dive of the Metrogas keeper, after great work in the build up by Billy Shinners and Sam Ryan.

THE SOUTHWARK City Tennis Club under ten side were named team of the year at a Lawn Tennis Association event at Wimbledon last week.

Manager Bradley said: "I was thrilled with the result, but more importantly I was delighted with the performance and the attitude of the players, after what was a very difficult week for myself and the squad.”

Defender missed the beginning of the season after summer move

JOE MARTIN had to perform a song by Ed Sheeran for his initiation into the Millwall squad after he joined from Gillingham in the summer.

And the defender was Thinking Out Loud this week as he considered the ground he has to make up following his belated debut against Northampton in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last week.

Martin was injured in pre-season and had to wait for his opportunity after his recovery, playing in an U21 game in the meantime to aid his sharpness.

Now he is ready to challenge for a place in the side for league games.

Martin said: “I think competition

brings out the best in you. I was first choice at Gillingham but it was always good to have competition there to keep you on your toes.

“And with me missing the first part of the season it’s given some of the other boys a chance and they’ve gone in and done well. It’s up to me now to try and show the gaffer why he brought me in and hopefully I can bring my best to the team.

“I’ve got to bide my time and be patient and if I get the opportunity I feel I can go in and offer a lot to the team.

“I love training. I do need to work on things, I’m not one who can not train and then go and play games.

This period is ideal for me, really. We did some fitness work last Friday, it was a hard session. I couldn’t have planned it any better for my comeback.

“I was alright after the game against

Northampton, a bit stiff here and there. It was the first 90 minutes I’d had in quite a while. It felt like a long time since my last game and I was happy to get through it without any injuries and just shake off a bit of the rust as well.

“I felt okay fitness-wise but want to get fitter over the coming weeks and see where I’m at.

“With the U21 games I can use them for what they are but it’s quite a bit different to a competitive league game. I can use them for general fitness but it’s a different kettle of fish playing against league opposition.”

Millwall will be hampered by injury when they get back to league action after the international break against Swindon this weekend. But by the end of October they could be in a very different position in the table if they can take advantage of a fixture

list that includes four games against teams currently below them in the league.

“We’re looking like we’re more than capable of putting a run of wins together,” Martin, 26, said. “League One’s been like that for a few years where anyone can beat anyone.

“But I think this year’s a great opportunity for us because I don’t think it is as strong as it was.

“I’m sure after a few games we’ll be up there where we should be. It wasn’t a great start but I think we’ve turned a corner and it’s looking positive.

“Jimmy (Abdou) and Ed (Upson) are big losses but our squad is more than good enough for this league and we’ll comfortably be up there this season. We’ve just got to make sure that we get our home form right. That’s going to be important and I think we’ll do well.”

Nelson and Twardek edge closer to first team returns

SID NELSON and Kris Twardek both featured for the Elite Development Squad in their 2-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town at Calmont Road on Tuesday.

Defender Nelson hasn’t seen action with the first team in over a month, while Twardek was playing his second competitive game in a week after recovering from a toe injury.

Byron Webster and Mark Beevers have since established themselves as Neil Harris’ first-choice centre-back pairing, but Nelson’s potential availability on Saturday could give the Millwall manager a tough selection decision.

Twardek whetted supporters’ appetites with some sparkling cameos in pre-season and he could come into first-team contention over the coming weeks, particularly if there are any more injuries over a busy period that includes seven games in 28 days.

Senior players Lee Martin and Jack Powell, who started but were substituted in the win over Northampton last week, were also in boss Justin Skinner’s side.

Despite Millwall’s first home defeat of the season, Skinner took the positives from the game, He said: “It was pleasing to see three youngsters – Harry Girling, Noah Chesmain and Mikael Ndjoli – involved and another U18, Ebere Eze, come on. In that respect it was more good experience for them and another positive to draw on.

“We have had a decent run this season and maybe the result was a little reminder. Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say that it's not going to be your day… yes, it is nice to win games, but the development of the players is first and foremost the priority.”

Meanwhile, Shane Ferguson and David Forde rejoined the squad this week after contrasting international fortunes.

Ferguson was buzzing back at the training ground after helping Northern Ireland qualify for the European Championships for the first time in their history.

He could be joined at Euro 2016 by Forde, but the Republic of Ireland will first have to negotiate a play-off against Ukraine, Sweden, Hungary or Bosnia in November.

That draw will be made this Sunday.

Shaun Cummings started in a back three for Jamaica on Tuesday in an international friendly against South Korea in Seoul which the Reggae Boyz lost 3-0.

Late bloomer taking extra responsibility in his stride at Den

SHAUN WILLIAMS believes a change in the way Millwall are playing has helped boost the confidence of the squad and has led to better performances and results.

From having to wait until September 1 for their first home win of the season, when Williams’ header gave them victory in injury time against Peterborough in the Football League Trophy, the Lions have won three of their last four games at The Den. Williams was dropped for the sixth game of the campaign, a relatively alien experience for someone who was MK Dons’ player of the year the season before he joined Millwall.

But he showed resilience and character to recover from that jolt and score the winner on his return to the side for that game against the Posh.

He had been an ever-present in the side since regaining his place until suspension ruled him out of the 2-0 win over Northampton last week, with Millwall winning five and drawing one of their eight games between the international breaks.

And the Dublin-born midfielder feels a more constructive and considered approach has also played to his own

natural strengths.

Williams explained: “We have a bit of a different game plan now and we’re actually playing a bit more football, whereas before it was a bit more ‘get it forward and get after it and run around’.

“But there wouldn’t really be much point in me playing if we weren’t passing the football. I’m not the type to rattle around and chase other people; I’m more effective when we have the ball rather than when we’re without it.

“I think (that change) is going to help us. Obviously we’ve won more games so confidence is a bit higher, people seem a bit more relaxed on the ball and tend to pass it a bit more.

“Before, we were just shelling it forward and playing off scraps.

“I think we could have passed the ball a bit more at the start. You’re not running as much when you have the ball. At the start we never really had it so that’s why we were running all the time.”

Williams says Millwall have also become cleverer in the way they play without the ball, after a number of teams came to The Den earlier in the season and absorbed an initial wave of pressure before playing their way through the home side.

He said: “Nowadays it’s a lot harder to break a team down if you’re more compact. They’re not going to hurt you

if you allow them keep possession in their own half.

“I think at the start of the season we were pressing the ball higher up the pitch trying to get it back, but then obviously teams were playing through the lines and picking us off. So I think it’s worked well that if we’re sitting off teams then we’re not getting exhausted a lot quicker.

“Then as well, when you do pass the ball you’re not using as much energy as you would just running after it for long spells.”

Williams will celebrate his 29th birthday two days after this Saturday’s clash with Swindon and after Jimmy Abdou’s injury is the most senior fit midfielder in Millwall’s first-team squad.

Ben Thompson, who came on for Abdou after the Comoros midfielder went off injured in the fifth minute of the 5-3 defeat to Peterborough, endured an early lesson, on his twentieth birthday, in how difficult it can be to replace someone the manager rates as crucial to the way the side plays.

Williams acknowledged there was a different dynamic when Abdou was forced off with a dislocated collarbone.

“Jimmy covers an awful lot of ground,” Williams said of his regular midfield partner. “He knows his position in the team. Ben took his place

when he got injured and maybe hasn’t quite got the nous Jimmy has, so maybe we didn’t complement each other too well.

“I think Jimmy complements me, winning it back and creating more space for me.”

Williams was relatively late making the move across the Irish Sea that many Dubliners, including Eamon Dunphy, had made before him to the unrelenting world of the professional game in England.

He had witnessed sporting abyss at close quarters when his club at the time, Sporting Fingal, who had won the Irish equivalent of the FA Cup just a year and a half before, ran out of money and folded in February 2011.

That setback came after it had taken him four years to get a regular run of first-team football in Ireland following a move from his first club Drogheda United, where early competition for a midfield place was strong.

A laidback character, he now takes being the example to the younger players such as Thompson in his stride.

“Paul Keegan, who is at Doncaster now, Stephen Bradley (who had been released by Arsenal) and (future Ireland international) Keith Fahey were the three midfielders that were playing ahead of me,” he said of his time at Drogheda. “You could see Keith was always a step ahead of everyone else.”

“Now I look at it game by game, really. [The responsibility] is not something I think about in that sense because if you’re good enough to play, it doesn’t matter how old you are. If you’re good enough to play you shouldn’t have to have someone tell you what to do.

“I talk to [Ben] all the time when we’re on the pitch and try to encourage him to do what he’s good at. I think when he came on against Northampton he played the game he’s suited to. It’s important to keep it simple and win it back and give it to people closest to you.”

Given what’s gone before in his career it’s not surprising all that talk of the winless start to the season at home didn’t bother him too much and, ahead of a crucial fifteen days for Millwall when they face four sides below them in the table, he is only focussed on what they can control.

“I enjoyed it even before the first win,” he said. “It’s your home pitch so I didn’t see why it was that much of a big deal. People are going to say what they want and it’s their own opinion.

“As you’ve seen, everyone’s beating everyone. As long as we look after ourselves and put a run together we’ll be fine. Confidence will be up even more and I think we’ll flourish from there hopefully.”

MARK COOPER has struggled this season to recreate the same conditions that carried Swindon to the brink of a place in the second tier last season.

That’s hardly a surprise given that Swindon could have just one player who featured in the 4-0 League One play-off final defeat to Preston in May in their side this Saturday.

Cooper was approached to become the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday during the summer, but turned down the job in favour of continuing with the Robins who he guided to eight in League One in his first season in charge.

MILLWALL MANAGER Neil Harris will be without midfielders Jimmy Abdou and Ed Upson for the visit of Swindon to The Den on Saturday.

Abdou, 31, had surgery last Thursday, October 8 on the dislocated collarbone he suffered in the 5-3 defeat to Peterborough and he may not play again before Christmas.

Upson is currently in a knee brace after damaging medial ligaments in the same game and is expected to miss the next six weeks.

The injuries are a huge blow to Harris who had been able to pick a more settled side recently, and more consistent results followed with five wins in eight games.

George Saville, on loan from Wolves, could start his second game in a row, while Harris also has the option of

playing Shane Ferguson on the left side of midfield, where Upson had excelled before going off at the ABAX Stadium.

As Millwall’s midfield options have become depleted, they are at least boosted this weekend by the availability of Sid Nelson, Joe Martin and Ferguson, who Harris could also play at left-back.

Nelson has missed the last six games but has featured twice for the U21s in the last week.

Martin has yet to make his league debut following injury in pre-season, but he was solid on his first competitive start against Northampton in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. He also offers more of a threat than Tony Craig going forward, something Millwall have missed this season.

Craig isn’t in danger of being dropped, but could move inside as he did against Northampton if Harris decides he wants Martin’s attacking ability from deep.

Swindon, meanwhile, were available

at 10/1 before the start of the season to win the League One title but have drifted out to 500/1 after failing to win any of their last seven games, a run which has left them in nineteenth place in the table.

Manager Mark Cooper has overseen a transitional period since the summer with nineteen players signed either permanently or on loan since the end of last season and thirteen players leaving the club.

They cast the net wide to bring in players from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Southampton, Marseilles and Legia Warsaw but Cooper has struggled to find the right blend.

The club also perhaps hasn’t recovered after going so close to claiming a place in the Championship last season before losing the League One play-of final to Preston.

And while Harris has midfield worries, they are nothing like the injuries disrupting Cooper’s plans at the

moment.

“We are down the bare bones in terms of bodies that are going to be available,” Cooper said this week as he contemplated potentially being without up to ten players for their trip to south London.

And as if injuries and suspensions weren’t enough of a headache for the Robins boss, summer signing Jordan Stewart only returned to the County Ground this week having gone back to Northern Ireland a fortnight ago with homesickness.

This is the first game of five in fifteen days for Harris’ side, a period likely to test his ability to juggle his diminished resources, while he will also hope to avoid picking up any more injuries.

Four of those games are against sides below them in the table. If Millwall are to make a decisive move towards the play-off places, between now and the end of the month seems like a good time to do it.

ALFIE PAVEY could be given his chance in the Millwall first team after John Marquis joined Leyton Orient on loan last week.

Neil Harris has stressed he wants four strikers in his first-team squad and Pavey has put himself in the frame to fill the gap with seven goals for the U21s so far this season.

The 20-year-old centre-forward made his debut for Millwall in the 4-2 defeat to Wolves on the last day of last season.

He joined the Lions in May 2013 after a prolific campaign in the Maidstone United youth ranks when he scored 124 goals.

Harris is also not ruling out looking to the transfer market to add to his options.

He told the News: “I think that’s where, again, we have to ask are we going to boost the ranks. If it’s a loan signing for a period of time then that means making sure we get the right player who fits with how we play, getting in the right character.

“We’re mindful of the fact that we’ve got Alfie scoring goals in the U21s. He

came into our academy late from the non-league so he’s still learning the game, but he has done well.

“Obviously we’ve got Jamie (Philpot) who’s probably ready to be involved in the first team but is out injured for a similar sort of time as Jimmy (Abdou).

“So if it’s a loan for a period of time we’d certainly consider it but, as ever for me, it has to be the right person.

“He needs to be slightly different to what we’ve got. We almost had John Marquis vying with Steve Morison and Lee Gregory and playing similar to them, or trying to mould him to be

like Aiden O’Brien. But no one’s Aiden O’Brien, he’s a unique player.

“So it might be someone who can give us a little bit more height, or somebody who can play a little bit similar to Aiden in that deeper role but also gives us a different threat going forward. It’s just making sure we don’t get the same sort of player to what we already have.”

Meanwhile, Millwall have been drawn away to Plymouth in the area quarter-final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The tie will take place the week commencing November 9.

The 22-year-old put in a combative performance against Northampton last week after joining on loan from Wolves.

Harris believes Saville’s previous spell at the Lions at the end of the 2012-13 season and his familiarity with players like Mark Beevers and David Forde means he won’t be daunted by the pressure of playing at The Den. “I think what’s great about George is he’s been here before,” Harris said.

“He’s been here before when obviously he was a bit younger, but he got a feel for the place.

“When I spoke to him that was important and he said, ‘I know so-andso, I know so-and-so’ and I spoke to him about our style of play and a few other things and he gets it.

“He’s come from a club that play very similar to us and the fact that he’s been here and knows what the fans demand and the style that’s demanded is ideal.”

Injuries to Jimmy Abdou and Ed Upson have limited Harris’ midfield options, but he also has faith in the players schooled in Millwall’s academy.

“What we have got is Shaun Williams and we brought in George, who is young but has a hugely bright future in the game. And then we’ve got Ben (Thompson) and Jack (Powell).

“Ben’s played and done really well for me and Jack’s also played a couple of games and he’s maybe searching for a little bit of rhythm.

But they’re two boys who are our own players, came through our academy, and we want to give them every opportunity to impress.”
