SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has for years failed to monitor whether developers have provided the social housing they promised, a government report has said.

It follows startling revelations from pressure group, the 35% Campaign, who say they have discovered that Southwark has hundreds of “missing” social homes that were instead being rented at higher prices.

IVEN THE deepening housing crisis and the council’s main election pledge on new homes, it is astonishing that the Local Government Ombudsman report has found it has no procedure to check that developers are keeping to their social housing promise.

The amount of social housing each developer promises to deliver when making a planning application has not been monitored by the council, according to a damning report published on November 30.

This was just days before the Leader of the Council took the Government to task over the challenges he faces in delivering 11,000 council homes over 30 years while funding is cut. He told the Communities and Local Government Committee: “National changes to the funding of homebuilding mean that local authorities face significant financial challenges and rely increasingly on private sector partnerships to deliver new homes.”

Southwark should be commended for embarking on the biggest council house building programme in the country. And it has produced reports clearly marking out its tally of new homes under schemes like renovating estates and finding homes out of vacant garages etc. But to fall below par on monitoring compliance with Section 106 agreements, which councils use to bargain with developers, is counterproductive. As the Ombudsman put it, this “may act as encouragement for unscrupulous developers to agree to something they do not intend to provide, knowing nothing will happen.”

Whether other local authorities have a procedure in place is unclear. Certainly it was not just this administration, but successive administrations that failed to put this procedure in place. Without it there are no figures to show exactly how many out of the swathe of developments across the borough over countless years have fallen short.

To its credit the council has agreed to take legal action against those that have taken advantage, and immediately agreed to carry out an audit. As the Ombudsman points out, while councils “may seek a court injunction if developers or subsequent owners fails to comply with its duty” it is “a discretionary power so it may not always follow that a failure will lead to action.”

The work of the pressure group the 35% Campaign, which called in the Ombudsman, has once again highlighted a real flaw and will hopefully tighten up the system, to stop developers from trying to get away with providing less social housing.

They were also behind a campaign which means Southwark now has in place a rule where developers have to publish a viability scheme, so they cannot later claim poverty to retract on their commitment to social housing.

Having both the viability scheme published and followed up now with a monitoring procedure to see that both developers and housing associations are delivering on their promises – getting to grips with the housing crisis will be a step closer in Southwark at least.

Long service awards for hospital staff who’ve clocked up over 100 years!

BETWEEN THEM, they’ve been caring for the sick and vulnerable in Southwark for over eight centuries – they’re the winners of the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Long Service Awards.

Thirty staff were honoured at the December 1 ceremony, all of whom have served at the Trust for at least 25 years – taking their combined service to over 800 years.

Some such as Faith Kelleher, health visitor in East Dulwich, have been doing the rounds for a lot longer, though.

“I’ve been qualified as a health visitor for 31 years now,” she said, “I took early retirement last year because I needed to slow down but I still work on the bank [of cover staff] because I knew I didn’t want to stop health visiting.”

Faith has the nickname of ‘Granny Health Visitor’ among her charges and says that in some cases, she’s supported three generations of family. “It’s nice to see clients who I met as kids and are now grandparents,” she said.

“I enjoy seeing children and families grow up,” said Faith.

“Watching people come out of difficult situations and move on is my favourite part of the job.”

"I really enjoy working in Southwark,” said Faith. “I love the diversity of the community I support in my role. Working with so many different people is very rewarding."

Fellow honouree Peter Swift, a paediatric intensive care charge nurse from Bermondsey with 25 years of service under his belt, reflected upon the progress he’d seen during his career.

"It's been amazing to see the advances that have been made in

paediatric intensive care,” he said.

“Shortly after I started my job at Guy’s and St Thomas’, we launched a retrieval service on a shoestring budget. We would send out small teams in taxis to district hospitals across the south east to stabilise sick children, returning to base in a local ambulance.”

“Today, the South Thames Retrieval Service operates 24 hours a day, deploying specialist teams to transfer ill children. It’s been exciting to be part of something which has grown so much over the years.”

THE WIBBLEYWobbley floating pub has been towed away from the Greenland Dock in Rotherhithe after a standoff between police and squatters.

Maritime Police were called at about 1pm to help bailiffs force out five squatters who refused to leave the floating vessel.

The five squatters on board were seen dressed in black and flying a skull-andcrossbones flag, while over 20 more

people protested with them.

South Dock resident Paul Battley said he was walking past when he saw the clash unfold.

“As I got there it was being towed and all the doors had been closed up,” he said. “There was a bit of a scuffle where one of the squatters jumped on to a tug boat, and there was a bit of verbal sparring going on.”

Eyewitnesses also said that an unknown man claiming to be the boat’s owner had announced to those watching that the boat would be “scrapped” after it was removed from the dock.

But mystery surrounds the recent

history of the Wibbley Wobbley, which closed abruptly two years ago. It is believed the squatters first appeared in May or June.

Southwark Council confirmed that inspectors “recommended improvements” to the pub before it closed, but said it was not involved in the “private matter”.

Plough Way resident Karen Jenson told the News: “People along the river are upset about what has happened to the boat. They wanted it to become some sort of community facility.

“The Wibbley Wobbley is part of Surrey Quays, and part of the character of the area.”

The ombudsman reported that Southwark has “failed” to monitor whether big property developers, and even housing associations, have lived up to promises to provide social housing.

Such promises to provide social housing (rented at roughly 20 per cent of market prices) typically form the basis for whether councillors decide to give housing schemes planning permission.

The report states that Southwark historically “had no procedure” for supervising compliance with Section 106 agreements: a point of law councils use to bargain with developers to build socialrent homes in return for planning permission.

The council instead depended on companies and housing associations “volunteering” to provide the social housing, which in dozens of cases they were not, the ombudsman found.

The 35% Campaign, who called on the ombudsman to intervene, say this flaw has let property firms off the hook for years. And because of the council’s inaction over 106 agreements, the ombudsman said Southwark “does not know if developers provided all the social housing units intended under the agreements”. “[This] may act as encouragement for unscrupulous developers to agree to something they do not intend to provide,

knowing nothing would happen,” the ombudsman said.

Following the 35% Campaign’s efforts, and the local government ombudsman’s findings, Southwark has said it will now “conduct an annual audit of all housing in the borough, as secured by a section 106 agreements”. The council say the purpose of the audits will be to “maintain the agreed stock and to guard against any... reclassification of units”.

It will invest £60,000 per year into carrying out the audits, with results published every year.

The ombudsman reported it hopes the council will be able to complete its first one-year audit “into 2017”.

Under current legislation, councils have the power to legally force housing associations and developers to live up to their promises to provide social housing.

“The council may seek a court injunction if the developer or subsequent owner fails to comply with its duty,” the ombudsman said. “This is a discretionary power so it may not always follow that a failure will lead to action.”

While the council agreed to begin carrying out annual audits, it refused to address the 35% Campaign’s suggestion that a ten-year audit of 106 agreements was needed. It declined to comment on this point when approached by the News.

With regards to the ombudsman’s findings, councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “We recently met with [The 35% Campaign] who raised concerns that some of the affordable homes secured by us from developers through the planning process may not have been delivered. We agreed to carry out a full audit of all homes built in our borough to make sure that these affordable homes have been delivered and this is underway.

“We welcome the Ombudsman’s report which recognises the steps we have taken to tighten up our processes. More affordable homes are desperately needed by our residents, which is why we take any such breaches extremely seriously and will take legal action.”

A DULWICH performing arts academy is celebrating the success of one of its own, X Factor winner Matt Terry.

More than seven million viewers across the country tuned in on Sunday night to see him declared winner of the nation’s favourite singing competition.

Current staff and pupils at the Pauline Quirk Academy (PQA) in Dulwich were among those watching in support of their ex teaching assistant.

Matt worked at the academy two years ago, and was an immensely popular member of staff according to Principal Melanie Crouch. She said: “Being such a good performer he really settled in very well here. Matt was such an inspiration to the kids and they absolutely loved him. He was my first port of call whenever I needed a cover teacher.

“I remember him carrying a fiveyear-old on stage during one of our inhouse shows. He helped her overcome her fear of performing. The calibre of staff we have is amazing and he got on with everyone and stuck into it.”

Melanie is hoping Matt might pop down to the PQA again in the near future to inspire the next generation of performing talent, perhaps even a future X factor winner.

“I’ve known him for such a long time, the success he’s had is incredible and it’s just amazing hearing him now on the radio,” she said.

TfL board members will look at outline plans for the extension, which will go out for a ten-week-long public consultation in “early 2017”, today, December 15.

An agenda for the meeting, published last week, said: “TfL now plans to develop the proposed route option, beginning with this public consultation on details of the proposal.”

The agenda reaffirms TfL’s preference to place two Bakerloo Line stations in Old Kent Road, one in New Cross Gate and a fourth in Lewisham town centre.

The estimated cost so far runs at £3.1bn, but TfL suggests the completed scheme will provide a return of twice that figure, from job-creation and added productivity.

It also references Southwark Council’s ‘Old Kent Road Area Action Plan’, which was published this year with plans for

STAFF AND businesses at The Shard have helped collect and wrap 520 presents to give to local community groups this Christmas.

The presents have been organised for the London Bridge Community Gift Collection who have been working with Team London Bridge.

So many presents have been collected and wrapped by the team that the total length of the gifts reaches 155m, which is half as tall as The Shard itself, the tallest building in Europe.

The gifts were handed out at the end of last week to Bede House, Beormund Community Centre, Cooltan Arts, Manna Centre, Ronald McDonald House, Time and Talents, Stones End Day Centre and South London Cares.

Police: ‘enquiries continue’ into reported incident last week

POLICE HAVE said enquiries continue into reports that a man tried to pull a child into a car from the street last week.

Officers were stationed at schools in Dulwich after the attempt on a four-yearold boy on December 7 near Dulwich Village Church of England Infants’ School.

It was reported that a man tried to grab the four-year-old from a car, as the child was cycling several paces ahead of his nanny, at about 3.27pm.

A statement from the child’s parents has been published on the East Dulwich Forum, saying a man “in his thirties” and of “Indian or Asian origin” attempted to pull the child into a green car, believed to either be a Vauxhall or Volkswagen.

attack. The headteacher of Dulwich Prep School, Rhona Muir, sent a letter to parents on December 8 saying local police had informed her of the incident on Wednesday.

Ms Muir’s letter said: “Please remind the boys about staying close to their carers at all times, we will do the same at school. The police have any such incidents are reported immediately, as there was a delay in reporting this one.”

PICKLE FACTORY SOLD FOR £50M BERMONDSEY

THE OLD Branston Pickle factory in Bermondsey has been bought by developer London Square in the biggest property deal in Southwark since the EU referendum.

The company has paid £50 million for the industrial site between Tower Bridge Road and the Old Kent Road, and plans to build 406 luxury apartments there.

Crosse & Blackwell built a factory on the site between 1894 and 1927, and produced pickles, sauces and creams there until they moved away in the late 1960s.

Branston Pickle was produced in the Bermondsey factory from 1922, which is reflected in one of the London Square buildings being named The Pickle Factory.

The site currently hosts nine industrial and business space buildings across 4.7 acres, of which

60 per cent is empty.

Since the catering industry left the area, the buildings have mainly been occupied for studios and storage.

Before Crosse & Blackwell, the area was home to the leather making trade, with several tanneries found on contemporary maps of Bermondsey.

The deal was finalised between London Square and site owner Rich Investments last week, after planning permission was granted earlier this year.

Mark Smith, London Square’s development director said: "Bermondsey is now one of the most fashionable districts in London, with a great creative vibe, and London Square will build on this to redefine this as a new destination in SE1."

London Square hope to complete the first phase of building by late 2017, of which 35 per cent will be affordable housing.

A PECKHAM man has been jailed for six years, after he was caught smuggling a batch of revolvers that were destined for the hands of London gangs.

Bradley Soro of Naylor Road was tracked and ordered to stop by cops whilst driving with his accomplice, Tyron Myers-Kerr, in a mini-cab on April 28.

Myers-Kerr, from Whitnell Way in Putney, was sentenced to twelve years for ten counts of possession of ammunition, and a firearm, with intent to endanger life. He was already banned from owning a firearm after a previous conviction

Myers-Kerr’s argued in court that he had legally purchased the “antique revolvers” from a registered firearms dealer, but the jury found him guilty after being shown videos of him posing with the guns.

Detective chief superintendent Jim Stokley, said: “The weapons these men were intending to supply had the potential to wreak havoc. The streets of the capital are significantly safer with these men behind bars.”

Bermondsey soldier, Frederick Thorndyke, lauded for courage

THE MEDALS of a Bermondsey WW1 war hero have been sold for £10,000 at auction.

The collection of Frederick Henry Thorndyke, registered in the 1911 census as a resident of Bermondsey, were sold last week through UK auction centre Lacy Scott & Knight (LS&K).

LS&K believe the medals will now be held in a private collection, but said the lot had attracted significant public interest.

Glenn Pearl, auctioneer at LS&K said: “The medals generated a lot of interest. We had six phone lines open and lots of people turned up to bid for them.

“We estimated they might sell for around £2,000 so £10,000 was a good price.”

The medals were put up to auction by a dealer who traditionally specialises in coins and jewellery.

They had been acquired over a number of years, and the seller had “no idea of their value,” according to Pearl.

Frederick Henry Thorndyke, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) following the Battle of Amiens in 1918 for showing: “the greatest courage and determination…

STEFANO BRIZZI, the man who murdered a copper during a rough sex session at his flat in Borough, has been jailed for “a minimum” of 24 years.

The 50-year-old self-confessed Breaking Bad fanatic was found guilty last month of acting out “satanic” fantasies, inspired by the hit TV series and an addiction to the drug crystal meth.

The jury agreed that Brizzi deliberately suffocated Pc Gordon Semple during sex, and attempted to dispose of the body by dissolving it in acid. Brizzi then discarded the corroded remains in the River Thames, and in communal bins at his

Forensic evidence also showed that the former Morgan Stanley web developer attempted to eat parts of 59year-old Mr Semple’s body.

He returned to the Old Bailey on Monday morning to receive his sentence from Judge Nicholas Hilliard, the Recorder of London.

Speaking directly to Brizzi in the dock, Judge Hilliard said: “You were convicted by the jury of the murder of Gordon Semple.

“He was loved by his partner and his family and friends.

“No sentence the court can pass can ever equate to the value of a precious human life and no sentence I can pass can begin to undo what you have done.”

The judge commended the officers who attended the “unprecedented scene”, which “no amount of training or experience could have equipped them for”.

Mr Semple had been based with Westminster Police, and lived in Kent, having originally moved to the south of England from Inverness.

The two men hooked up on April 1 after chatting on the dating app Grindr.

Mr Semple was reported missing the next day by his partner of 25 years, Gary Meeks.

It wasn’t until April 7 that police discovered Mr Semple’s remains, having been alerted to a “smell of death” from Brizzi’s neighbours at the Peabody Trust Estate.

A statement from Mr Semple's brother, Ronald, was read during the sentencing hearing on Monday.

“He was a well-thought-of and caring and generous person and much loved

brother,” it said.

“Me and my family were devastated as news of Gordon's murder was disclosed and still find it difficult to deal with.”

It is believed another guest arrived at Brizzi's home on April 1, at the exact moment Mr Semple was being strangled. But Brizzi answered over the intercom: “We’re having a situation here. Someone fell ill but we’re taking care of it. So our party is cancelled.”

When police visited Brizzi’s flat six days later, he answered the door wearing only a pair of pink underpants and aviator shades and told the officers: “I've tried to dissolve the body – I've killed a police officer.”

He added: 'I killed him last week. I met him on Grindr and I killed him.

Satan told me to.”

A knife and four black candles were found under the bed when Brizzi's home was searched, and a PDF of the Satanic Bible was found on his computer.

Sally Bennett-Jenkins QC, defending Brizzi, said: “This is an appalling case.

He recognises that and has done from the inception.

“The behaviours that my Lord has dealt with can only be ascribed to his taking of crystal meth.”

DISABLED MOTHER AND SON TRAPPED

SUPER SEWER constructors Tideway have offered a 69-year old woman and her severely disabled son £60 for “days out” to escape construction noise – despite the fact they’re both wheelchair-bound and carer dependent.

Mrs Doofa Hussein, 69 and her son, Nasir Abdi, 43, with cerebral palsy were made the £30 per day offer to mitigate for times when noise from machinery is particularly bad at the Chambers Wharf site – one of 24 “super sewer” sites across London.

Mrs Hussein and Mr Abdi are particularly vulnerable to the loud noise due to their medical conditions. Mrs Hussein underwent a heart bypass two months ago and has been advised by doctors that she needs to nap daily and Mr Abdi, when not at the day centre, is bed bound by his disability and becomes incredibly distressed by the noise.

The severe noise is caused by “impact piling” work, which sees a mechanical

hammer pushing a girder into the floor of the River Thames. Work times are Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and halfday on Saturday.

Mrs Hussein and Mr Abdi, neither of whom can speak English, cannot leave the house without carers, meaning they cannot take up Tideway’s £30 per day offer.

“They’re wheelchair-bound. They’ve never claimed a day of the money. They need two carers to be able to go out,” said daughter, Mrs Abdi.

“My Mum says she can feel the drill in her heart,” said Mrs Abdi, “and my brother can never sleep. Because he can’t communicate with us, we know he’s irritated but he can’t tell us what’s happening.”

Following complaints from residents in the area, Tideway installed triple glazing on the back windows of properties on Bevington Street. However, Mr Abdi’s bedroom is at the front of the house, meaning he didn’t get the extra pane.

A Tideway spokesperson said: “We have been working closely with residents to understand how they may be affected

“Although we cannot go into detail about individual cases, we will continue working with the family to see if there is more we can do to help them.

MAYOR UNVEILS BLUE PLAQUE FOR 1154 DOOR

THE MAYOR proudly honoured Southwark as “the most historic borough in the country” on Thursday as she unveiled the latest winner in the Blue Plaque Scheme.

The original porch door of St Giles’ church, built in 1154, is the latest site to get the nod. A fire desecrated the Old St Giles Church in 1841 but the porch door remained intact.

The public nominated the porch door as a winner way back in 2009.

Extensive renovations were required before the plaque could be mounted because the stonework had been damaged after the council used the site as a binstore.

“When I read about this location and this archway,” said Mayor Cllr.

Kath Whittam in her pre-unveiling speech, “I was surprised that I hadn’t heard of it before. But then, we live in a historic borough and we are tripping over history at every street corner.”

Cllr. Whittam acknowledged the importance of historical sites giving people a sense of community and culture and thanked Southwark Heritage Association for their work in seeking funding for and coordinating renovation work. “it’s been a long time coming,” said Chair of Southwark heritage Association, David Alden, “Thanks to Cleaner, Greener, Safer funding, Southwark we’ve been able to repair a part of Southwark’s history.”

Cllr. Whittam stressed the importance of protecting the borough’s heritage. “It’s good to mark these historic areas and to treasure them,” she said, “We can’t neglect them.”

Speaking of the amount of historic sites in the borough, she said, “It’s like location, location, location here! All around the cathedral, if you stand there and throw a stick you’ll hit something historic,” she said.

TV PRESENTER Holly Willoughby was at St Thomas’ hospital’s maternity ward on Wednesday, fronting a live broadcast of ITV’s This Morning.

The star was on the ward to raise awareness of all the wonderful work that midwives do.

Holly spoke to new and expectant mothers and became choked up after meeting some of the newborn babies on the ward, joking she “might change jobs.”

She was joined by Ferne McCann, star of The Only Way is Essex, who lent a hand to a team of community midwives and Dr Ranj Singh, This Morning’s Resident medic.

122 NEW HOMES FOR AYLESBURY GET GREEN LIGHT WALWORTH

ANOTHER PHASE of the Aylesbury regeneration with 122 new homes was given the green light on December 6 by the council’s planning committee.

The new site in Thurlow Street, Walworth, will include a four-tiered block that will be four, six, seven and fifteen storeys tall.

The development will replace a row of derelict homes, a sports area and a grassy bank, located between Thurlow Street, Dawes Street, and Inville Road.

They will also be replaced with a new library, as well as a medical and early years’ centre.

Forty-six of the new homes will be let at social rent, with ten at “intermediate rent” and the rest available at market value: all maintained by Notting Hill Housing Association. The basement will also provide 23 car parking spaces and

space for fourteen parking spaces along Inville Road and Dawes Street.

The News had been contacted by Aylesbury Street residents who feared the development would ruin the view at the end of their street and overshadow their homes.

Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, Mark Williams, called it “a positive step forward”.

He said: “The regeneration of the Aylesbury remains a priority for the council and we are forging ahead to create better quality homes, an open and attractive environment and brand new facilities for the local community to take advantage of like a new library and healthcare centre.”

Elsewhere on the Aylesbury Estate, the council is hoping to take the government to the high court, in order to secure lawful permission to evict leaseholders before demolishing the Bradenham, Chartridge, Arklow and Chiltern blocks. The court ruling could take as long as April to decide.

Council installs first storage unit for residents’ buggies

THE FIRST buggy storage unit in Southwark has been installed on the Unwin and Friary estate.

The hanger, installed this week, will allow residents to safely store buggies and prams outside of their flats.

It is hoped the unit will alleviate build ups of buggies which had been blocking numerous fire escapes around the estate. The hanger cost approximately £2,700.

The weatherproof units are free to use and will be managed by members of the Friary Estate TRA committee.

Rebecca Khan, a resident on the estate since 2005, is delighted with the new installation. “My entrance is always blocked, I can’t get buggies up or down the stairs as I need to. I’ll start using this locker straight away,” she said.

Michael Orey, Secretary of the Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, said: “I was getting constant complaints about this. It’s taken three years to get the funding approved but we hope to get more to help soon for a bike hanger too. SOUTHWARK COUNCIL have confirmed that current tenants still awaiting their water bills refund can hope to receive their cheques

by January 2017.

Former tenants will be dealt with in the second wave of refunds. The claims process for former tenants has been

opened and once verification has been completed, tenants can expect to start receiving their cheques from January.

Around 74,000 current and former tenants were over-charged on waterservice bills between April 1 2001 and July 28 2013, while Southwark Council was collecting water bills from tenants on behalf of Thames Water.

A high court judge ruled in March that the council had acted illegally by imposing administration costs in the bills sent to tenants and keeping the costs received as a profit, rendering

£28.6 million payable in refunds to affected customers.

The council has issued 28,108 refunds so far but are still processing some of the more complex cases.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “It’s been a complex process with lots of unique circumstances to take into account but on the whole, I am pleased with the progress we have made. The refunds will continue into next year and more residents and former residents will receive cheques.”

Five storeys to be added to tower block

REFURBISHMENT WORK on the Abbeyfield Estate is set to begin in August 2017, creating five new storeys on Maydew House and replacing the Bede site with housing, the council has announced.

The work is anticipated to take four years and the scheme will cost an estimated £24,228,200.

Five additional storeys will be constructed on top of tower block Maydew House, and charity Bede House will re-locate from its existing site to below Maydew, creating space for new homes on the current Bede site.

Project architects, Haworth Tompkins, are introducing mixed housing to the site to ensure that the project as a whole will be ‘costneutral’ for residents, while still remaining under council ownership.

A report into the development, considered at Tuesday’s cabinet

meeting, said that in order to balance project costs, the council needs to sell a total of 45 units in the Maydew block on the open market. Twenty four of these units will come from the five additional storeys on top of Maydew.

However, 90-100 new homes will be built on the current Bede site. The council anticipates that these new builds should be 100 per cent council and social housing properties, a council spokerson said.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said, “The refurbishment of Maydew House will help to meet the ever growing need for housing in Southwark and will provide good quality council homes to secure the future of Maydew House.”

“We have listened to and taken on board the views of residents to make significant improvements to the Abbeyfield Estate. We know from the current housing crisis that we need more homes of every tenure and this scheme will deliver on that need.”

Collision closes Old Kent Road

PECKHAM: Police and ambulances were called to a collision between a car and a lorry on Wednesday outside the Toys ‘R’ Us in Old Kent Road.

Police who attended the scene confirmed that the silver hatchback driver did not suffer “lifethreatening or life-changing injuries”.

East-bound traffic was stopped along the road for several hours, also leaving four bus services to run on diverted routes.

NUNHEAD: Nunhead Library has reopened after a £130,000 refurbishment to mark its 120th birthday.

A CHILDREN’S charity is appealing for support to send a three-year-old Peckham girl recovering from cancer on her dream Christmas trip.

Aimee Kemsley is hoping to visit Peppa Pig World in Hampshire with her family this festive season to spend some time with her favourite cartoon characters.

Hundred of kids transform grot spot A FORMER “grot spot” alleyway in Herne Hill has been transformed with a colourful mural created by local school children.

Over two-hundred St Jude’s Primary School pupils joined forces with artist Victor Szepessy, to give Brockwell Passage flavours of the local area.

The passage had until recently been a dumping ground for fly tippers, but now also has its own blue plaque, and a new bench.

At the unveiling of the ‘Brockwell Passage Picnic Spot’, the school’s headteacher, Alexandra New, said: “The children really enjoyed working on the artwork, it makes the passage really colourful, and it’s now a lovely place to walk through.

The area’s mini makeover was led by the Herne Hill Forum, with its #CleanHerneHill movement, who arranged the collaboration between the kids and Victor.

Victor said: “The kids from St Jude’s Primary School created their own stencils and spent three days stencilling the passage way.

“This was their first experience of painting on a wall and we explored how brick absorbs paint, how to mix colours to create new ones, and how the space you cut away to make a stencil becomes the shape that appears on the wall.”

£12.1m research centre to be built at Tommy’s

SOUTHWARK: Sick children and cancer patients will benefit from a new research centre at St Thomas’ Hospital after £12.1 million of funding was announced last week.

A medical imaging research centre will be built at the hospital after the Wellcome Trust chose St Thomas’ as one of the hosts of fourteen major research centres to receive investment and prestigious Wellcome Centre status.

The Centre will see scientists from King’s College London working with clinicians from Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust using their research to help patients in Southwark and across the country.

Funding has been granted for the next five years, and research will begin in the new year.

Professor Reza Razavi, Director of the Centre, Paediatric Cardiologist at Evelina London and Professor of Paediatric Cardiovascular Science at King’s College London, said: “We are thrilled that our application was successful and the investment will make a huge difference to the research we can carry out, ultimately helping patients who will benefit from pioneering developments for better diagnosis and treatment guidance across a number of conditions.”

Adventure playground to swing into action after hitting funding target DULWICH

DOG KENNEL Hill Adventure Playground (DKHAP) are edging closer to their brand new building, as they hit their Crowdfunding target a week early.

The youth organisation managed to raise £14,878 by December 5, a week ahead of when their campaign would have been taken offline.

There’ll be no resting on laurels for manager Patrick Pierre-Powell and the team, though, as the next step in their journey will be to use the funds to pay for a planning application to Southwark Council.

“To everyone who donated, we’d like to say a massive thank you,” said Patrick. “We were taken aback that so many people threw their support behind the campaign.

Whether people donated two pounds, ten pounds, £100 or just came to one of our events, it was all a contribution,” he said.

If the DKHAP team’s planning application is successful, they’ll next be faced with the daunting task of raising the money needed to pay for the new building itself – which will come in at around half a million pounds. “At the next stage, we’re sure the campaign will gather up even more momentum,” said Patrick. “Or at least we hope it will!” DKHAP provides children aged five to sixteen with a free

adventure playground and during the Spring and Summer months, sees up to 100 children a day coming through the doors.

Their current building, built half a century ago, is no longer fit for purpose, with its leaky roof and poor plumbing.

The team hopes to put on an event at the start of next year to thank the community for their contributions and support.

Grounds from C19th mansion added to woods

SYDENHAM: A demolished 19th century mansion’s estate has been added to Sydenham Hill Wood nature reserve, in a move described as a “win-win for nature and for Londoners.”

Beechgrove was a large mansion built on the eastern side of Sydenham Hill between 1852 and 1865, but was demolished in 1983 after more than 20 years of dereliction.

The move has been organised by the London Wildlife Trust (LWT) and The Dulwich Estate so the ground can be conserved as a haven for wildlife in Southwark.

Gordon Scorer, CEO of LWT said: “We are delighted and excited to be adding Beechgrove to Sydenham Hill Wood, it’s a win-win for nature and for Londoners, providing a home for wildlife and securing a valuable slice of woodland in south London.”

LWT volunteers will now remove invasive rhododendron and cherrylaurel from the grounds so that native woodland flora can flourish.

John Major, chief executive of The Dulwich Estate said: “The charity is pleased to have this opportunity to cooperate with London Wildlife Trust in extending the area of woodland managed by the Trust for the enjoyment of the public at large.”

Care scheme for heart failure comes here first

A NATIONAL first scheme to improve care for people with heart failure is being launched in Southwark and Lambeth.

The new service, led by King’s Health Partners, will see dedicated heart failure teams deployed across the boroughs. It is hoped that the project will save more than 80 lives a year.

The project is being funded by a £1.5 million grant from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity. Up to 3,000 bed days may be saved through the programme by reducing hospital admissions and re-admissions of patients with heart failure.

Dr Gerry Carr-White, consultant cardiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “This exciting initiative will mean we can enhance the services provided by GPs to patients with heart failure to improve their diagnosis and treatment, which should ultimately save lives.”

Teams will include a named doctor, nurse and pharmacist, who will provide day-today advice to local medical services. They will also run education sessions and ‘virtual clinics’ in GP practices in order to help GPs make the best decisions for their patients with heart failure.

Heart failure is a leading cause of death in Lambeth and Southwark. Up to 9,000 people are estimated to have the condition across the two boroughs.

DEAF CHILDREN’S CAROL CONCERT

A GROUND-BREAKING Bermondsey based charity which teaches deaf children how to speak without sign language held a Christmas Carol Concert on December 6.

The Auditory Verbal UK (AVUK) show saw youngsters with hearing impairments reading aloud and playing music on the stage.

Supporter of the charity, BBC Star Tyger Drew-Honey was in attendance, along with South London storyteller Vanessa Wolfe.

The concert was held to raise awareness of

the work of AVUK, which re-located from Holborn to Bermondsey in April 2015.

“We are so proud of the awe-inspiring children who sung, spoke, and played so wonderfully last night,” said Auditory Verbal UK’s Chief Executive Anita Grover, “The children who performed last night showed that their hearing loss is not a barrier and they challenged perceptions of what deaf children can achieve.”

AVUK AVUK use auditory verbal therapy to enable children to talk. Their method is highly specialist and focuses on developing the auditory cortex – the listening part of the brain - to develop language skills.

Eight out of 10 children who graduate from AVUK’s programme have language skills on par with their hearing peers, and most attend mainstream schools. Although their two centres are based in London and Bicester, they support children from all over the UK. “It was great to be at Auditory Verbal UK’s carol evening, and to meet some of the fantastic families the charity has supported and to see the children singing, performing and reading to the audience,” said Tyger Drew-Honey.

“The work of the charity is so important to ensure deaf children have the same opportunities as hearing children.”

Kennington residents up in arms over change of bricks on school expansion

KENNINGTON RESIDENTS have called the council’s planning department “underhanded” after officers botched up plans for the expansion of a local primary school.

Southwark approved the construction of a two-to-three-storey block of nine classrooms for Keyworth Primary School in October 2015, which will see it double in size.

Now, neighbours opposite the new block are furious that builders are laying the wrong colour bricks for the school: dark red, rather than the yellow bricks in their houses, and seen throughout the borough.

David Doyle, who lives adjacent to the new classrooms in Sharsted Street, felt “misled” by the council.

“The planning officers changed the colouring of the bricks at the eleventh hour, without telling any of us,” he said.

“It’s going to look terrible. And when we complained recently, the head of planning told us what they had done was ‘legal’, but I would say they have been immoral.

The residents claim they were misled because Southwark’s planning

application in 2015 had trailed a previous application in 2014, which residents campaigned to have altered to suit their neighbourhood. The stark colour change in the second application shocked them because they had been given the impression an agreement had been reached on how the finished building would look.

“You would think now that they might remedy it somehow, maybe start it again with the correct bricks. But instead they say it’s too late now – it would be too expensive,” David added.

“I don’t think incompetent would be the word to describe how they have behaved, I think it’s been very underhanded.”

The News reported last year on the residents’ long-running campaign to get other planning conditions met, which eventually saw the council’s planning team sign off the development. But that was on high court judge’s order that the new block would “match the existing original work, in respect of materials… detailed execution and finished appearance”.

The court order also banned the new block from being used as a general entrance for kids’ at the start and end of the day, for fears it would overwhelm the little cul-de-sac with traffic.

Another resident, Maggie Woods, said she thought the newly-built classroom windows would give them a view into neighbours’ bedrooms, also that they would get less sunlight.

“We could have done more to draw

people’s attention to the change and the wording on the new application could have been clearer, and we do understand that some residents feel disappointed and unhappy with the decision,” cllr Williams added.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has officially announced its intention to help 25 families of Syrian refugees start a new life in the borough over the next five years.

The plans were outlined at a public meeting held in Tooley Street on Tuesday, which was set to be approved by the council’s cabinet members.

A statement written ahead of Tuesday’s meeting by council leader Peter John said accommodation for the refugees would be provided in collaboration with The Salvation Army, with support from Citizens UK. A report produced by council officers on the matter also said that help provided to the first five families in 2017 would be “fully funded by central government”.

THE ANNUAL Albin’s Christmas memorial service proved a success again this year, with more than 1,600 people showing up at the event on Wednesday evening last week.

It was held at the Albin Memorial Garden in Southwark Park.

Simon Dyer, son of the late Barry Albin, said: “The memorial service went really well. We weren’t expecting so many would turn up and it’s great to see that people still enjoy coming after all these years.

We followed the same theme as before but we had a new special

memorial video at the start this year - it was great. Our thanks to soloist Jay O'Callaghan for the music too.”

Many took to social media to declare their delight, one person described a “beautiful service, very emotional and yet very comforting to be amongst people who are grieving for loved ones.”

“Southwark remains willing to help but with the high cost of housing in London, the Government has chosen to prioritise housing refugees away from London,” Cllr John said.

“We have therefore been exploring ways to make good on our commitment to resettle Syrian refugee households within Southwark, whilst minimising the impact on the already stretched council resources and the local demand for affordable housing.

“I am really pleased that the Salvation Army, with the support of Citizens UK have come forward with local accommodation for families.”

The UK government declared in September that it had secured 20,000 local authority places to offer refugees between 2015 and 2020. By September, 2,800 refugees had already been resettled in the UK.

CYCLIST INJURED ON BRIDGE A WOMAN cyclist who was struck by a van in Southwark Bridge Broad on December 8 is said to be in a stable condition after suffering lifechanging injuries.

The woman, age unknown, was caught by the van at 11am, and the driver stopped at the scene.

Roads were taped-off by police as they investigated, but no arrest was made.

The Met then confirmed on Friday that the woman was in a stable condition, after medics had feared for her life.

She was taken to a major-trauma centre at an east London hospital where she remains in care.

A PLANNING application for the long-awaited redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle “town centre” scheme has been submitted to the Council.

If approved, the colossal redevelopment would see the demolition of the 1960s Shopping Centre, and London College of Communication (LCC) campus buildings.

In their place, a “significantly improved” shopping centre comprising of cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as office space, a multi-screen cinema, and 500 capacity music venue.

Details of the application confirm that 979 one-to-three-bedrooms homes would be created in three residential tower blocks, the tallest of which would be 34storeys tall, at the south side of the junction. 528 of these new homes would be two-bedroom flats.

The three blocks would also come with public roof terraces, for “recreational” use, with “lounges, shared kitchens and dining space… place to work and fitness centres”.

The application includes provision for 35 per cent of homes to be “discount market rent” which means all but 343 of the homes will offered at open-market prices.

A 36-page “Affordable Housing Statement” within the application states the term “affordable” will cover

“discounts” of between fifteen to eighty per cent off market rent. Also that these homes would be made available to households with a total income of £20,000 to £90,000.

A new Northern Line station entrance would be located in the pedestrian peninsula, adjacent to the current London Underground station entrance.

The planning application was made by property consultants DP9, on behalf of Elephant and Castle Properties Ltd, which is owned by Delancey – the company which owns the Shopping Centre.

Residents and councillors who attended the Walworth, Borough and Bankside Community Council in November were shown a presentation of what to expect from the development.

The presentation was led by Kim Humphreys, the former deputy leader of Southwark Council, whose “public affairs for real estate” company has been contracted to work on the Elephant and Castle regeneration.

Mr Humphreys told the meeting that Delancey intends to start demolishing the current shopping centre by 2018.

The News has previously reported that several shop owners in the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre still have long leases that will not expire for years, including the Palatial Leisure Ltd bingo hall and bowling alley, whose lease expires in 2025.

CAMBERWELL LIBRARY was transformed into a winter wonderland by local special needs students last week.

Around 30 students from the Orchard Hill College celebrated the festive season in style with Christmas music and a gift sale on Friday, December 9. There was even a dance performance led by the students themselves.

The celebrations were well supported by the local community, with many in the area dropping by to join in with the fun.

Kath Whittam, was in attendance alongside Councillor Kieron Williams.

“It was a fantastic day, the students had lots of things which they had made for sale including signs, cards and plants, all of which had been decorated.

We sang lots of carols and Christmas songs, it was lovely,” she said.

The Mayor has already expressed an interest in being involved again next year and has vowed to visit the college in the New Year.

Orchard Hill College is part of the Orchard Hill College and Academy Trust (OHC&AT), a family of specialist providers aiming to provide a positive environment for special needs students to learn and achieve in.

Our parks among the Coyle and Hayes right most polluted in London to support remainers IRST OUR schools, then our

streets and now a third report says even Southwark’s Parks are among the most polluted in London.

ASIopendata.com/London air have published a map, showing nearly all of Southwark’s parks and open spaces in centre and north of the borough are breaking EU safety limits.

These include Burgess Park, Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, Tabard Gardens and loads of others.

Car fossil fuel pollution is one of the biggest threats to our kids – stunting lung growth for life and lung cancers and heart diseases among adults.

It is killing over 9,000 people in London every year.

Thankfully, another report from the NHS provides advice to Southwark on how to tackle this lethal threat.

1. Invest in protected cycling lanes.

Southwark have not built a single protected cycle lane for over a decade.

2. Introduce 20 mph limit. Well done Southwark has done this, but police refusing to enforce it properly.

3. Install thick shrubberies and trees along borders of parks to stop lethal pollution from roads poisoning the air in them.

4. Do NOT enclose green spaces with high buildings, which lethally traps the pollution.

Southwark has a pretty poor record on this.

It moved the kids play area in Camberwell Green next to Camberwell Road.

It built new outdoor gym on Albany Road right next to polluted road.

It redesigned Burgess Park entrance to allow Old Kent Road pollution to flood into the park.

It cut down North Camberwell Open Space shrubberies bordering Wells Way, not once but twice!

It bulldozed protective shrubberies on New Kent Road open spaces.

Huge areas of Peckham Rye Park are wide open to the busy polluted roads running alongside it.

Planners are insisting that parks in the centre and north of the borough are turned into pollution traps by demanding they be hemmed in with new tower blocks.

Southwark needs to get an urgent handle on this. Get planting with those parks shrubberies immediately and clean out our lethal planning department.

Get in people who care about local children’s lives and not simply profits for global property developers.

You say you voted to remain but you pick a fight and threaten someone who is championing the rights of tens of millions of people who didn’t believe political and tabloid lies about the NHS, about market access, about science and technology and economic health and stability.

The public meeting you promised?

WE HAVE been following with interest the claims of Peter John “Southwark Labour councillors have been campaigning hard against the introduction of Pay to Stay, which would have led to huge rent hikes for our council tenants”, totally ignoring the input of active tenant’s organisations across Southwark.

He made no mention of the SGTO who worked closely with Lord Roy Kennedy (a former SGTO member) and Helen Hayes MP, both of whom thanked the SGTO for the input into the work they are doing to combat the

worst aspects of the Housing Act. No mention of the Tenants & Residents Association and individual tenants who have been holding estate meetings and operating stalls on Saturdays in Southwark Shopping Centres to inform residents of the worst aspects of the Housing Act. No mention of the activities organised by Defend Council Housing.

It gives rise to the serious question – if he is doing all this wonderful work, why didn’t he tell us? Or is this just another example of politicians turning up and claiming credit for what they haven’t done?

You were kind enough to publish the letter signed on behalf of Tenants Council, Housing Area Forums, key Housing Campaign groups and Trade Unions asking Peter John to keep the promise he made in May to call a public meeting to encourage residents across the borough to jointly campaign against the Housing Act. At the time of writing we have not received a response.

Peter John is on record as stating how important it is to work with private developers and he does that with great enthusiasm, in all sorts of prestigious venues. Conversely he ignores the people who put him in office. If you want to look at his legacy of working with the private sector, look at Southwark’s changing skyline and the loss of homes that are affordable for Southwark residents.

We would like to give a message to Cllr Peter John OBE, and all the other councillors who have ignored us, (‘not in our portfolios!’), that there are still parts of the Housing & Planning Act that are even more draconian than ‘Pay to Stay’ such as the introduction of fixed term tenancies.

We reiterate what was said in the letter to you Peter John and Southwark’s Labour Group; hundreds of tenants heard you promise to call a public meeting - please do so now.

He taught so many to be curious about and respect the past as we plan for the future He was not the kind of man who would have sought fame but I hope you and others will use your good offices to ensure there is a fitting tribute to his great work. Perhaps a Blue Plaque at John Harvard Library,on the former Walworth Town Hall in Bermondsey Square.

Protecting our children

T IS just over a week to go until Christmas and I’ve been busy meeting with some of the excellent community groups and charities in my constituency who support people all year around, but whose support is particularly important at this time of year.

Yesterday I helped serve lunch to pensioners on the Kingswood Estate as I have done for the last seven years and am looking forward to several carol concerts in the constituency next week.

I hope that every reader has a very happy Christmas and New Year, but it is unfortunately the case that some of our children and young people will face a difficult festive season. The revelations of abuse of young footballers at clubs across the country has once again brought to our attention the exploitation of far too many young people by adults that they should have been able to trust.

Amongst the most devastating revelations in recent years, has been the abuse of vulnerable children in the care of local authorities, by those whose job it was to protect them. Many years ago there was significant abuse at Southwark’s Hollies children's home in Sidcup and on the Lambeth side of my constituency it is known that hundreds of children suffered horrific abuse at Council-run children’s homes including Shirley Oaks in Croydon. I am clear that the voices of the victims and survivors of abuse must be heard, that perpetrators who are still alive should be brought to justice and that government and our wider society must learn the lessons and take proactive steps to minimise the risk of any young person enduring such dreadful experiences again.

We know that there is still much work to do. It is very disappointing to read the report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary on the poor performance of the Metropolitan Police in dealing with the safeguarding of children and young people.

I will be pressing the new Commissioner to ensure that the positive words from the Met are backed up with concrete actions and I'm glad that Sadiq Khan is taking action that Boris Johnson failed to take and has recently set out plans for the Met which establish tackling abuse as a key priority.

Let's make sure that as we gather with family and friends this Christmas, we think about the most vulnerable children living in our communities. If you are concerned about a child you can contact Southwark’s duty social worker on 020 7525 1921, the police on 999 or 101.

One doesn't like to be rude, but critic I am, and critique I must.

Wonderful though the tea was, I do so like a bit of chocolate on my Hobnobs. This major failing in production aside, the tea and the lack of 'stage' (almost no set and house light on), served to create an intimacy devoid of pretence. And this served the piece, and its subject matter, very well indeed.

The show was a one man account of his battle with Bipolar disorder. Mark Lockyer, writer, actor and subject matter, guides us through his personal journey in the bleak

landscape of mental illness.

In an utterly engaging hour and a half he walks us through the ups and downs, as it were, of his story of survival and recovery. Harrowing and hilarious in equal measure, we share in a warts and all story, which captured me in a profound way.

I guarantee by the end you will be amazed at what humans can come through and still function. Thoroughly inspiring and life affirming, I urge you to go along, as mental health needs highlighting and Mark reminds us all of the Human behind the 'illness'.

And plain Hobnobs is a small price to pay for a great evening of theatre...

who wants the band to reform, and Michael’s uncle/guardian who just wants his own life to begin again to help Michael to find his voice.

Tori Allen-Martin stands out in this piece, creating a perfect balance between the humour and darkness of her character, bringing a necessary warmth and sincerity. David Leopold performs well as perhaps the first mute character seen in a musical, he conveys characters inner struggle and frustrations splendidly through his tormented body language. Helen Hobson as the mother and Edd Campbell Bird as a teenage Michael haunt the present for Michael and with the stage set around a pool with an island in the middle it only exemplifies the isolation of our lead actor, but also as a device to signal a memory. The set is full of visual metaphors, which suits the small,

intimate space but could do with some enhancement from the plot.

The first act is somewhat slow, but

by Act Two the pace picks up and provides a lot more in the way of development. The lyrics excellently express the emotion of the narrative and its character, but fails to move the plot forward. Musically, the piece benefits from a somewhat soft rock sound and while the emotions of the lyrics are smart and enjoyable in the moment, I found it to be ultimately forgettable with no, one stand out number. While there is some work to do on the overall narratives, ‘Muted’ is a promising new addition to the London musical scene.

The Fitzrovia Radio Hour Company have taken Dickens’ Christmas Carol and made it their own in this play within a play within a radio show.

Ernest Andrew is low in the company pecking order, only getting to play Tiny Tim for the past 17 years, while the mighty Stanley De Pfeffel writes, directs and takes the /scrooge part every Christmas. But not this year as the whole Macbeth set mysteriously fell on him as he rehearsed on the Old Vic stage, and Now Ernest has to step up.

And how he stepped up. Not only taking the best part but also leadership of the troupe, much to the chagrin of the others. Gretchen Haggard, was close to De Pfeffel so is very teary; Beau Belles thought it should be he that took command while Vanity Fair is just happy that the show is still to go on as she only has eyes for the dashing Beau. incarnation. With the scene set so the radio production of A Christmas Carol begins with this broken band doing the voices and sound effects with much aplomb.

Ernest gives everything to his ‘Bah, humbug’ line, followed by a knowing eyebrow raise to the audience; Vanity and Beau steal kisses and flirty looks at every opportunity, and who would have guessed that biting into a stick of celery sounds like a neck being snapped?

But soon things begin to to awry, the lights flicker and scary sound effects happen seemingly by themselves, putting the cast nervously on edge. But these strange events lead us into the final part of this wonderful show.

Each one of the actors is a joy to watch; each one is constantly performing even when they’re not speaking, and the sound props are a show all on their own. The Fitzrovia Radio Hour Company’s Christmas Carol is a complete delight as they mock luvvie actors and unwrap the internecine feuds that fester in some theatre companies.

Definitely one of the best seasonal shows to be seen this year.

here are those that see the past through lovely little pink tinted glasses and see what they endearingly call ‘The good old days’, conveniently forgetting the lack of Health & Safety in work, no NHS, no protection from a welfare state, freezing homes with outside toilets, and with just a stick and a bit of string to play with in a bombed house, writes Michael Holland...

Others feel that street crime is a 21st century plague, that modern times are awash with evil, so hanker for the days when they believed everything was good in the world.

Think on. Pat Kingwell has just published Once Upon A Street that tells of the dastardly deeds done in your road right back to the 18th century, with all proceeds going to the Help For Heroes charity.

Working alphabetically from Abbey Street to Yalding Road the author has researched newspapers, magazines, books and online archives to put this collection of the mad and the macabre together, the gruesome alongside the good, and all enlivened with old photos and prints, some of which have never been published before.

Poor little Rose Poole, 12, of Grange Walk, was taken from her home while her mother was out, after a woman offered her a good home and plenty of clothes. The police discovered Rose in a caravan in Surrey.

Eleanor Watkins of Anchor Street, ‘a great drunkard and vixen’ who had twice suffered imprisonment for beating and stabbing her husband, was given ‘six months’ hard labour for neglecting her three children, the life of one being endangered.’

In 1845 two scoundrels were chased from Bermondsey Wall to Spa Road after stealing money and jewellery from The Old Justice. The landlady, Mrs Wickens, ‘gave chase, exercising her lungs to their fullest extent’, says a newspaper of the incident.

Just behind The Old Justice, Elizabeth Witting set about her two young children with a chopper in Bevington Street. ‘She then went to the police station and reported the murders, and said she should have killed her third child if he had not gone to school.’

Cherry Garden Street appeared to be a dangerous place to live with brothers killing sisters with pokers, and masonry falling from derelict houses, while in Corbett’s Lane Mark Parker threatened to kill his wife and five children with a knife. The magistrate thought the best way to stop this violent behaviour was by fining Parker £40…

In Once Upon A Street you can read about rat attacks, cat attacks, cow attacks, and the inevitable dog attacks; suicides by poison, decapitations by train, riots in Culling Road, dodgy weighing scales in the greengrocer’s, a bomb factory in Debnams Road, fallen women and lots of drunken men letting the drink get the worst of them. John Fashanu and Norman Wisdom are reported to be on the manor, along with Bermondsey’s own Mr Universe and a ‘facial contortionist’. You will also meet experts ‘in the art of sordid amours’.

But it is not all doom and gloom: ‘Seven regulars at The Hand and Marigold pub in Bermondsey Street, won £400,000 on the football pools in 1987’; ‘In his will Charles Edward Atkinson, J.P. of Eastbourne, left £13,000 worth of shares and bonds in trust for a Girls Shelter in Decima Street, or for other works among the poor in London’; in Catlin Road: ‘March 1941,

Nick Murray, 16, a Boy Scout, was awarded a silver cross for consistent bravery when fire-fighting and digging people out of Anderson shelters during bombing raids’. There was also this report of the ‘touring Australian cricket team visited Crosse and Blackwell’s factory in Crimscott Street. Wicketkeeper Bertie Oldfield was very interested in the latest machine for preparing soup cans, which turned out 365 cans a minute.

He said, “Why, that’s even faster than Don Bradman scores his runs”.’

Once Upon A Street informs and entertains; it shows that Bermondsey has its good and its bad, the moral and immoral existing side by side. The author covers about 150 local streets with stories of derring-do flanking cowardice, skill in the company of skullduggery, Royalty and the riff-raff, inventions and intrigue.

Who knew that highwaymen hung about Grange Road for likely victims?

That the best pears were grown down The Blue? Or that Irishman James Hennessey did not know his wife’s

name even after 35 years of marriage. At an inquest into her death he said, ‘It might be Dorah, Norah or Honorah, but the Coroner might call her by what name he liked’!

In 1880 a butcher was charged with operating ‘an unauthorised tripe boiling business in a shed.’ And William Wheeler was ‘sentenced to 21 days' hard labour for squirting dirty water, from the gutter, in the faces of passers-

by in Jamaica Road.’ Odd charges similar to this still crop up in the Southwark News occasionally, which show that people do not change very much.

In the photos you can see some buildings from their past have gone but people will be surprised at how much survived the war and the developers.

The book is brilliantly researched and is laid out for easy reading; it is a book you can dip into whenever you like, entertain friends and family with, and can be used for reference.

I HAVE tasted the future and it is Nepalese. I have tasted Nepalese herbs and spices for the first time and they were good.

Extremely good. I will now have to either climb the Himalayas and live there or be a frequent visitor of Yak & Yeti, writes Michael Holland...

Shankar, the very knowledgeable man in charge, started Nina and myself off with a Kathmandu Beer, a Nepalese ale specially brewed with natural water from Godavari, Kunakhola spring. Very nice.

As we sipped on this, Shankar talked us round a plate of different herbs and spices that he brought from the kitchen for us to taste and smell, explaining that these are the main ingredients in Nepalese cooking. Some I was aware of, but then there was those new to me: Black Cardamom with its own unique taste, then a peppercorn type spice that had a distinctive flavour (Timur) that I had never before

encountered; and we were both particularly taken with the herb Zimbu that grows under the snow high up in the mountains. This sturdy plant has to be specially imported because without it you cannot replicate the true taste of Nepal.

Shankar wanted us to taste the best of what his country has to offer so we allowed him to make suggestions, which was the best idea as neither of us knew anything about Nepalese cuisine.

While the chef was cooking our starters we were given Poppadoms and chutneys, but not the usual ones, these chutneys were carrot, tamarind, onion and mango which were surprisingly good.

Our first course arrived with a flourish. It was obvious that Yak & Yeti was aiming for it to stand out above the crowd with the presentation of Nina’s Salmon Ajwain. ‘Cooked to perfection,’ she said after just a couple of mouthfuls.

It came with a salad garnish that was far superior to the regular grated carrot, lettuce and tomato wedge, plus there were swirls of yoghurt based sauces decorating the plate.

Impressive.

I tried some and adored the contrariness of the delicate fish with the spicy, aromatic marinade the salmon was cooked in; like lovers making up after a tiff.

Shankar had brought me Lamb Mo

Mo, delightful little bundles of pudding with a spiced minced lamb centre. We were told this is the most popular fast food in Kathmandu and I could understand why - With the tangy tomato dip they were excitingly moreish. I had to go easy on the Mo Mo because they were quite filling and I knew we had more courses to get through, so I left a couple to take away for later.

Another beer was delivered to the table: Ghurka Beer, a strong ale that was introduced to the British Army by the Ghurkas who brought their intrepid warrior ways and their lager to the table.

This Yak & Yeti is the first of what is now three in London (One is in Eltham), so obviously this cuisine is catching on, and so it should be. It’s currently my new favourite.

It wasn’t long before the chef came out to deliver his skilful work himself, and to take our deserving praise for the starters he had created for us.

Dish after dish hit the table: chicken, prawn, dall, rice, aubergine, naan…A veritable feast.

What I found exceptionally good was the Timur Piro Chicken: a divine blend of spices (coriander, fenugreek, timur, and chef's special

spices) with chunks of chicken served in a thick sauce.

This was one of the Nepalese blends that was like nothing I had tasted before. It had a really good kick to it and lingering tastes of ‘Hmmmmm’.

We also had a Karahi King Prawn that was cooked with fresh spices, tomatoes, green peppers and coriander leaves, plus, again, chef’s special spices. It is the way the chef puts these ‘special spices’ together that give that distinctive Nepalese flavour. This dish had a delicious sweetness to it.

Along with the seafood and meat dishes we had Zimbu Dall: lentils cooked with Nepalese herbs, spices and Zimbu; Baigan Bharta: Smoked aubergine pulp cooked with ginger, green chillies, turmeric, cumin and fresh coriander leaves (Nina loved this one); Saffron Pilau Rice and Naan Bread for mopping up those succulent sauces.

We could not finish all that was set before us, so we brought the remainder home in order to do it justice after an interval of rest. To be honest I had it for breakfast today and it tasted just as good as it did last night…

During clearance of vegetation from Area Z, Camberwell Old Cemetery approximately 170 public memorials have been uncovered. In accordance with council guidelines the memorials have been photographed and their details recorded . A LATE show from Daniel Carr prevented Dulwich Hamlet from exiting the FA Trophy at the First Round stage last weekend, as they drew 2-2 with Royston Town.

Royston, from the Evostik League Southern Division One Central, took a two-goal lead into the final 25 minutes, through strikes from John Frendo and Scott Bridges, but Nyren Clunis’ 65th minute goal reduced the arrears and set up a frantic finale.

With time ticking away, it looked as though a shock would be on the cards, but Carr levelled proceedings with just two minutes remaining to force a

replay.

Injuries had hit the Hamlet squad hard, forcing Gavin Rose into changes, with Kenny Beaney (head) and Dumebi Dumaka missing out.

The cup tie swung from end to end in a first half that ultimately finished goalless, but four goals were shared in the second, setting up Tuesday night’s replay.

IT WAS to be a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor's show’ for Stansfeld last Saturday.

After last week's record-breaking display at table topping Rusthall, the club were brought back to earth by bottom club Lewisham Borough in a game that saw Stansfeld have to come from behind twice to secure a point.

In a game low in quality and high on errors, Stansfeld struggled to reach the levels of previous weeks with a thoroughly disjointed and lacklustre performance.

After having three early efforts cleared off the line, the home side feel behind on 15 minutes, when a speculative shot from outside the box took a huge deflection off of Bobby Holley, wrongfooting Stansfeld keeper James Bradley before falling into the opposite corner of the net.

The scores were levelled in equally fortunate circumstances twenty minutes later, as the Lewisham keeper spilled the ball at Billy Jolley's feet - the winger gratefully dribbling the ball into an unguarded net.

The trend of bizarre goals continued into the second half, as in the 65th minute, Lewisham took the lead once more. A harmless looking shot from Reece Walker hit a bobble, looping up and over Bradley, who could only manage to push the ball into the net.

LYNN AC Boxing Club enjoyed a night of success last weekend, as they took two titles in the Alliance National finals.

Firstly, Eyram Avadzi boxed Billy Jackson from Eltham ABC in the 67kg final. Eyram, known as ‘Smiler’ at the club, boxed on the back foot and kept his opponent at long range. Jackson pressured Avadzi for all three rounds of the bout, but the Lynn boy took the victory – and the title - on a split decision.

Jacob Koutouan, meanwhile, boxed Liam Hoyle from Watchet ABC in the 71kg final. Both boxers tried to push forward, which led to a four-round toe-to-toe contest. ith the Christmas break just around the corner, it was time for the second MCT MOPAC Festival at the Lions Centre. Surely, we were in store for an absolute cracker.

On Monday 28th November, 60 young people from Lewisham, Southwark, & Greenwich came together once again to celebrate the intervention and diversionary work that happens day in and day out at the London Premier League Kicks (MOPAC) programme.

The day consisted of social educational, life lessons, personal reflection, and last but no least a

football tournament. Paul Hannaford, an inspirational life speaker who shares his personal journey with up to 10,000 young

people a year, delivered hard hitting messages to the groups of young people in attendance.

Detailing his early years as a prolific offender, drug addict, and gang member, Paul used images, videos, and physical scars to show his life experiences. St. John’s Ambulance was also in attendance on the day delivering ‘Stick it’ workshops, which focused on equipping young people with the skills needed to save lives. The tailored delivery showed our

young people how to correctly treat knife, and gunshot wounds to prolong survival, as well as communication, casualty care, and understanding the recovery position.

The tool of using football to engage and educate young people within our communities is invaluable and needed. Sixty young people have now been educated around the negatives of drug use, gang culture, life in prison, and the unfortunate physical effects of that life. Those 60 young people have also gained vital life skills on how to prolong or save a life, a life, which could potentially be very close to them

personally. Alongside the workshops delivered the young people will now be formally accredited with a certification for their attendance, and general understanding of the content.

Participants came from Abbey Manor College Broadoak & John Evelyn Campuses, Southwark Inclusive Learning Service KS3 & 4, Moatbridge Secondary School, and the MCT Academy Development Team, and acted as great ambassadors for their respective provision. On the football front the Abbey Manor College Broadoak Campus boys ran away with the tournament, lifting the trophy and taking the

bragging rights back to Lee Green.

Community Development Officer Tom Rolt commented saying; “As expected today was another spectacle, and celebration of the work that we do on the projects.

The staff, and young people thoroughly enjoyed the day from the first workshop, to the final game of the tournament. The day was a culmination of the life changing work that goes on day in day out.”

IT WAS easy to forget in the midst of significant booing by the home fans as the final whistle blew last Saturday that if Millwall win this weekend they will have the same number of points that they had after the same number of games last season.

The problem is the next fixture is a daunting one. Last season Lions boss Neil Harris gave Jordan Archer his full Millwall debut and changed formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 against Scunthorpe to try to ensure his side were more solid and came away with at least a clean sheet.

They had a measure of luck when Paddy Madden missed a late penalty for the home side but they kept the Iron out, something which is likely to be much more difficult to do this weekend.

Harris has made the point before that if his side are dominating but not taking their chances they must at least make sure they don’t concede. He came to the press room afterwards armed with statistics, and the one that said Millwall had 19 efforts on goal from inside the penalty area accurately told the story of this game. But still the hosts came away with nothing.

How Millwall could do with a clean sheet at Glanford Park. At the same stage last season they had six of them, compared to three now. And that was despite a horrendously poor start to 201516 when Harris struggled to settle on his first-choice XI. His preferred defence only really materialised in February, and that was after what at first appeared to be bad luck with injuries ended up being the making of Mark Beevers, Byron Webster and Mahlon Romeo. Webster and Beevers

eventually became a sold centre-back partnership after Tony Craig’s knee injury in October, while Romeo was a revelation after injuries had kept out Carlos Edwards and Shaun Cummings.

It’s a similar story this season but with the top two, or even three, threatening to pull away, and teams like Southend and Charlton revived, it’s unlikely Harris can afford to wait until February for a settled defence to form in front of Archer.

Romeo’s debut came at Walsall in a run of just one defeat in thirteen games that suggested Millwall would take a top-six place and take stopping in the play-offs.

Barnsley did that after an astonishing run of form from January. But there was another team on a similar run, one that almost took them into the play-offs on the final day. Scunthorpe were sixteenth when they sacked Mark Robins in January and missed out on sixth to Barnsley only on goal difference.

That form has carried into this season, Saturday’s loss at Rochdale just their second in sixteen league games. They are also the division’s top scorers and their goal difference is seven better than the next best.

In that context one would fear for Millwall. Webster is out but even with him there have been defensive problems.

Sid Nelson continued alongside Tony Craig in the centre of the Lions defence against Shrewsbury. It was a big test for Nelson after he had been taken off in the 3-1 defeat to Wycombe and exchanged words with a section of the home support as he jogged towards the dugout.

Harris clearly has strong belief that Nelson has a resolute temperament. He made his debut two years ago and is still only 20, and it was surely too much too soon when Ian Holloway named him captain when he was only eighteen.

the Shrews when Louis Dodds ran at him in the first minute, stooping to try to head clear rather than putting his foot on the ball. But a headed clearance and then a block from the follow-up shot ten minutes in settled him and Harris said afterwards he showed why he will develop into an important player for Millwall.

However, tough questions were surely asked at Millwall’s training ground this week concerning why Dodds had so much space in the penalty area to shoot past Archer in the seventeenth minute.

Sure, Dodds and Ivan Toney played a smart one-two, but such a basic move shouldn’t have been enough to open up Millwall to such a glaring extent.

Seconds earlier Lee Gregory had superbly controlled a long pass from Shaun Williams and before the ball hit the ground he flicked an effort past goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler only to see Adam El-Abd clear off the line. Later in the half Jim O’Brien, returning to haunt Millwall again after scoring twice against them for two different clubs last season, cleared Craig’s header when most of the ball looked like it had crossed the white paint.

Shrewsbury had kept five clean sheets in eight games since Paul Hurst took charge in October, and Leutwiler, El-Abd and O’Brien were illustrating their defensive desire.

Harris brought on Aiden O’Brien for Joe Martin as Millwall dominated the second half. But too many times attacking moves were breaking down to increase the frustration of the Den support.

Harris made another attacking switch as Calum Butcher came on for Nelson with Williams moving into the centre of Millwall’s defence. And after Fred Onyedinma couldn’t get a cross in when he had beaten George Grimmer, David Worrall was a last roll of the dice. With six minutes to go Worrall crossed from the right towards Harry Smith and O’Brien totally free at the back post, but neither could get a crucial touch.

Craig had a better chance late on but headed wide unmarked six yards out.

Archer went forward for a corner in the last minute and was close to getting a touch, but the ball ended up in the arms of Leutwiler before Gregory saw two shots blocked as Shrewsbury hung on to claim a first win at Millwall in 54 years.

NEIL HARRIS says Millwall won’t take any risks with Shaun Hutchinson as they ease the defender back from a hamstring injury.

Hutchinson has missed Millwall’s last seven games after aggravating a hamstring problem against Luton in the EFL Trophy group clash in November.

It continued a luckless run for the former Fulham defender, who picked up hamstring injury in Tony Craig’s testimonial in July. When he eventually made his competitive debut he injured his groin late on in the 5-1 defeat to Peterborough on August 16.

Hutchinson, 25, had to wait until October for his first appearance at The Den before the injury curse struck again at Kenilworth Road.

He made his latest comeback in the U23s’ south London derby against Charlton on Monday, and Harris hopes he will be back for the senior derby with the Addicks on December 21.

“He did really well Monday, it was a good 45 minutes for him,” Harris

said. “We took a low-risk strategy with Hutch the last couple of weeks.

“He’s had a disastrous start to his Millwall career, apart from his performances for a couple of minutes against Fleetwood and against Southend and Luton.

“He’s missed so much of the season there was no point rushing him back. He could have easily gone for 60 or 70 minutes on Monday, but we won’t risk him.

“He played very well and he looked fit. He’s back in the fold and in full training, but whether this weekend comes too soon for him we’ll have to assess that later in the week.

“Some players are injury-prone but Hutch isn’t one of them. I never really had long spells out but I had a problem with a glute muscle and just couldn’t get to the bottom of what was wrong. I couldn’t get to 100 per cent but one day tried a different course of action with an injection and within three days I played an hour and scored the winning goal at Oldham.

“It is frustrating and you do beat yourself up and you’re continually asked the same question about when you’re going to get fit. It really drags you down as a person as well as a

professional.

“Hutch has had to contend with that and the sooner we get him back to being a footballer again rather than being an injured player the better it is for all of us.”

Meanwhile, Millwall went ahead at Bromley’s ground Hayes Lane through Kris Twardek’s first-half strike, before Charlton’s Mikhail Kennedy equalised after the break.

Lions U23 boss Justin Skinner said: “We started very well. We dominated the first 20 minutes and got our noses in front when we forced a throw following a good move.

“There was plenty of commitment from both sides with a few tackles flying in as you expect in a derby game. Charlton went into it top of the table and we were determined to match them.

“To be fair, they started the second half the better and scored during that period. There really wasn't a great deal between the sides overall and a draw was just about a fair result.”

A point leaves Millwall in third place in Professional Development League (South), eight points off Charlton in first but just a point behind second-placed Cardiff.

HARRY SMITH said he expects “fans can get on your back” after the 1-0 defeat to Shrewsbury at The Den on Saturday was greeted with boos at the final whistle.

Millwall dominated the game but drew just their third blank in sixteen games at home this season as Shrewsbury survived a late onslaught to claim the three points.

Smith scored six goals in his first six games for the club, but saw Shrews goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler claw one first-half header off the line before the striker scooped over from close range with time running out when perhaps he

should have found the target.

Smith is satisfied with the start he has made to his Millwall career, but knows fans can be quick to voice their displeasure if results aren’t going their way.

“I couldn’t have asked for better but I’m still just taking each game as it comes,” Smith said. “To score a hat-trick in the FA Cup was a big moment for me and I want to create many more like it.

“It was frustrating at the weekend considering they had just one chance and they scored from it and we had countless efforts, including some for myself. I was disappointed with myself after the game because I thought I should have scored a few goals.

“We did a lot of things right during the

game and obviously you can understand the fans’ frustration. We all want to win and we’re all in it together. It was a disappointing result but we have to look forward and get back to winning on Saturday.

“It can affect you when the fans get on your back but you can’t think too much about it because you won’t do what you need to do. Unfortunately we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. It’s part and parcel of football.

“When everything is going well there’s nothing better than the atmosphere at The Den. But when you hit a bit of a bad spell or get a bad result, it’s expected at a club like Millwall that the fans can get on your back.

“But we know that and hopefully we

can rectify it by getting a good result at Scunthorpe.”

With Steve Morison back in training after the knee injury he suffered against Southend on November 4 but a doubt to feature this weekend, Smith should continue up front with Lee Gregory at Glanford Park.

“Lee’s been brilliant,” Smith said. “I’ve played with him a few times now and throughout the 90 minutes he’s talking to me non-stop. He gives me a lot of advice and that helps me a lot.

“The next few weeks are massive for us with Scunthorpe, Charlton, Swindon, Gillingham, they’re all huge games for us. Come the end of the month we’ll see where we are and hopefully that will be in or near the top six.”

Philpot returned from injury in the U23 side’s draw with Charlton on Monday.

“He’s had a disappointing spell at the start of the season. After pre-season he would have been hoping to be coming off the bench and nicking a goal and getting the odd start.

MILLWALL WILL be without Byron Webster for their League One clash with Scunthorpe this weekend.

With Shaun Hutchinson unlikely to be risked that could mean Sid Nelson continuing in the centre of defence alongside Tony Craig.

Shaun Williams could also drop back from his normal midfield role.

Steve Morison is back in training with Neil Harris set to make a late decision over his potential involvement at Glanford Park.

Harris may decide to give Morison and Hutchinson an extra few days to work on their fitness ahead of the south London derby against Charlton next Wednesday.

Scunthorpe haven’t won in three games in all competitions but are top of the table and have scored more goals than any team in the division.

They have been beaten in just five of their last 41 league games since Graham Alexander took over from the sacked Mark Robins in January, and haven’t lost a League One game at Glanford Park in almost a year, since Sheffield United’s 1-0 win there on December 19.

But Harris is confident in this Millwall side’s ability to get a positive result when it’s not expected of them.

“In these sorts of games last year we really performed,” Harris said.

“Sheffield United and Walsall away stand out. Walsall were on a very good run when we played them but we went there and won with what was a makeshift defence.

“We go into this weekend with optimism against a Scunthorpe side that has been excellent this year.

They’ve been really consistent and the table doesn’t lie. They’ve been solid defensively and have real goal-scoring ability.

“They are certainly a team we

look at and strive to be like because not only have they scored a lot of goals but they’ve kept them out at the other end as well.

“So it’s going to be a really tough test, but one I’m really looking forward to, to be honest.

“And then we’ve got our rivals at home on a Wednesday evening. It’s a big five days for us and we have to embrace them. I think it’s easy to tell I’m excited by them. And my players will be as well.”

Alexander, meanwhile, isn’t panicking after last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Rochdale when they almost got a result after going three

“I am not going to judge anyone on one performance,” Alexander said.

“I am not getting into predictions for the team next week but we can't have a performance like the first 70 minutes at Rochdale again. We need to make sure players, myself and the staff learn from that experience.

“Having one or two players playing at their maximum is nowhere near good enough to win a game of football. We will analyse everything and put it right.

“I will look at it logically and if I honestly feel that there needs to be a change then there will be a change.

“If I feel the team can play better next week with a different line-up then that is what it will be.

“It’s about trying to get my disappointment over to the players after the result last weekend that, yes we could have had a hatful of goals, but that game’s got to be nil-nil.

MILLWALL boss Neil Harris hinted at a change in approach at Scunthorpe this weekend after admitting his side have been too “gung-ho” recently.

Scunthorpe are League One’s top scorers this season, while only four teams have let in more goals than Millwall.

Harris switched from his preferred 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 at Scunthorpe last season, with Steve Morison and Fred Onyedinma occupying the wide attacking positions.

Midfielder has had discussions about his future with boss Neil Harris EXCLUSIVE

KRIS TWARDEK says he would welcome a loan move to experience regular first-team football.

Twardek made his full debut for Millwall this season when he started against West Brom in the EFL Trophy in August.

He featured in three of Millwall’s four games in the competition, but the Lions’ exit against Wycombe means further first-team opportunities this season could be limited.

Twardek has seen Millwall’s young strikers Jamie Philpot and Alfie Pavey spend time out on loan this season at Bromley. Players can move to clubs lower than the Football League on loan outside the transfer windows, but a January move is more likely for the Canadian U20 international.

Twardek, 19, has discussed his immediate future with his manager Neil Harris, and the pair have agreed that a spell out on loan is the next obvious step.

“Given the right opportunity and everything being permitted by the club I’d definitely be interested in that,” Twardek said.

“We’re all quite a close-knit group and you get advice off people like

Jamie and Alf and see what it’s like.

But I don’t think you can really understand what it’s like until you go out and experience it.

“You have to leave it up to the manager and the club, but you do also have to take steps yourself. I speak to (Harris) quite often and we’re clear what the next step is and that is getting games.

“We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.”

He got the chance to show Harris – and clubs interested in taking him on loan – his ability in the EFL Trophy, and for all the criticism the competition received this season, Twardek welcomed the playing time it gave him.

“At the end of the day you want to play as many games as you can,” Twardek said. “I don’t really put a number on it because if you don’t get it you’ll be disappointed.

“I knew I had the chance in the EFL Trophy. From a young player’s perspective you’d be crazy to think it’s not a good idea. It gives you an opportunity and I can say from my point of view it was definitely a good thing.

“I’d love to be a sub in a league game at some stage. But you just have to wait for your chance.”

CEO issues plea to Lewisham Council

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh has urged Lewisham councillors to “review again all the facts” before deciding whether to proceed with a compulsory purchase order (CPO) of land around The Den.

Kavanagh will join a number of Millwall players on the club’s visit to the children’s ward at University Hospital Lewisham ahead of Thursday evening’s crunch mayor and cabinet meeting.

Kavanagh warned of the potential damage to the club if Millwall are excluded from regeneration plans that will instead be carried out by offshore property developer Renewal, and he highlighted the “fantastic support” the club have received throughout the saga.

Kavanagh said: “It’s ironic that on the very same day our players will hopefully be bringing smiles

to some young faces, a decision could be taken by Lewisham Council that would have a devastating effect on the club’s community operations and potentially the club’s future viability.

“We are grateful for the fantastic support we have received from so many quarters on this issue, and I make one final plea to the councillors involved in making this decision to review again all the facts at their disposal and get round the table to discuss our proposals.”

Millwall and the hospital have enjoyed a close relationship for many years, a connection that was further strengthened in 2013 when the club actively backed the Save Lewisham Hospital campaign, including wearing special T-Shirts in the FA Cup semi-final against Wigan at Wembley Stadium.

The hospital visit takes place at 2pm, before the 6pm meeting at Lewisham Town Hall.

“It’s the fact that you’re a young player, you left school to make something of yourself for your family and your friends,” Twardek said. “If you’re not going into it 100 per cent it would just be pointless.”

“You come in every day – especially since I’ve been a pro for the last yearand-a-half – and the goal is to make the first team in a competitive match.

So when it happens you’re buzzing for it.

“Naturally I work hard and I’m naturally athletic, so I can cover big distances. I’m mobile and can get around the pitch.

“Before the Wycombe game I was confident after coming from Honduras with so much excitement and such a buzz around it. When I was younger after first coming to Millwall I felt a lot more nerves. I didn’t know the atmosphere or anything like that.

“But this is my fourth season and it’s a lot more common to me and I’m a lot calmer.

“I just want to get as many games this season as possible and develop as much as I can so that come next season, assuming I’m here, I will be a lot closer to the next goal.”

Crunch talks for Wylde

GREGG WYLDE is “working extremely hard” on his fitness, according to Neil Harris, but the Lions boss won’t stand in the winger’s way of he wants to leave the club in January.

Wylde hasn’t played for the club since the EFL Trophy game at Luton on November 8. He hasn’t made a matchday squad since the home fixture against Bristol Rovers four days later.

Shane Ferguson, Aiden O’Brien, Fred Onyedinma and David Worrall are all ahead of Wylde in Harris’ plans, and the former Plymouth man is likely to finish the season elsewhere after failing to make an impact at Millwall.

“At the moment I’ve a lot of options in wide areas,” Harris said. “One thing we’ve not been lacking in is production in wide areas in terms of balls into the box and shooting or scoring ability from Fergie, Aiden in particular, Fred and David.

“Gregg has found himself down the pecking order. I’m always conscious not to drag boys into the squad if I’m not planning on using them.

“He’s been working extremely hard in training and keeping fit.

DAVID FORDE will not be coming back to Millwall in January.

Forde, who turns 37 on Dec 20, is on a season-long loan at League Two Portsmouth where he has kept eight clean sheets in 21 games.

The Republic of Ireland international lost his place to Jordan Archer last

season, and Neil Harris has given Tom King his full Lions debut in this campaign.

Millwall have an option to recall Forde when the transfer window opens next month, but Harris will wait until the end of the season to hold formal talks with his former team-mate.

“I spoke to Fordey a couple of weeks ago and he’s having a good time there, he’s really enjoying it,” Harris said.

“He’s playing week-in, week-out.

“Fordey’s got a lot of interests, he loves studying and reading. For me

Fordey has got all the attributes to be a really good goalkeeping coach. He’s a real thinker and his work ethic is unbelievable.

“The reason he went to Portsmouth was because he wanted to play every week. He’s not ready to be of that mindset where he’s not playing. He did it last year because he knew he had a little bit of a loss of form and that Jordan was coming strong, and they were difficult decisions.

at Portsmouth and he’s not going to come back here and be guaranteed to play 20 games after Christmas.

“He won’t want to come back, he’ll want to stay where he is because that’s the man he is, that’s his mindset. He’s on a season-long loan and an option to come back in January but he’ll want to stay.

“Come the end of the season it’ll be another conversation about is he going to play, is he not and where does his future lie.

“But that’s a long way off at the moment.”

Millwall are likely to be without Shaun Hutchinson for the clash with the most prolific side in League One, while Byron Webster is definitely out.

Williams regularly played in the centre of defence for MK Dons, and moved back to partner Tony Craig against Shrewsbury last weekend after Sid Nelson had been substituted.

Millwall haven’t kept a clean sheet away from home in the league since a scoreless draw at Colchester last April, and manager Neil Harris could decide he needs the experience of Williams to combat rampant Scunthorpe.

“Willo had a couple of seasons playing there for MK Dons,” Harris said. “His composure and his quality and football ability in the middle of the park is key for us. His experience in there is vital as well.

“But he is an option to play at centre-half. I put him back there when Sid had to come off after cramping up at the end of the Shrewsbury game. Shaun did really well and gave us another dimension with his quality on the ball.

“That’s certainly a consideration for me looking ahead to this weekend.”
