PLANNING REFORM to make sure developments contain genuinely affordable housing is being spearheaded by Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes after she introduced a new bill to parliament last week.

Introduced in the House of Commons last Wednesday as a Ten Minute Rule Bill, if eventually passed, the Planning (Affordable Housing and Land Compensation) Bill would change the legal definition of ‘affordable housing’ as part of a reform to existing planning law.

Currently, this is defined as up to 80 per cent of market price, meaning so-called new affordable homes cost nearly half a million, out of the reach

of many.

Hayes (pictured) argues any new definition should be linked to income, rather than market value.

She proposes that an affordable home is one with rent ‘no more than 35% of a household’s net income including those in the lowest income bracket in their local authority.

Hayes, who was a town planner before becoming an MP in 2015 and sits on the government’s housing, communities, and local government select committee, also wants to put limitations on expectations of developer profit and land values.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S new homes chief has described the wild speculation and excessive profits by landowners as a ‘great south London land rush’ and says only government land reform can end the social housing crisis.

Councillor Leo Pollak, cabinet member for new homes, told the News Southwark council is renewing its call for legal planning reform, including compiling a list of sites with overinflated prices it couldn’t afford to buy.

There are more than 25,000 people on Southwark’s council house waiting list, and around 2,000 children growing up in temporary accommodation.

The Liberal Democrat opposition has

consistently argued the council should crack down on the thousands of empty homes across the borough and improve its consultation process.

As the News reported, according to a new government analysis, Southwark needed to build 5,941 new homes from 2015-2018, but only managed 4,771.

Last year, an £89 million grant from the Mayor of London and the government’s decision to lift the borrowing cap on council’s housing revenue accounts were welcome boons.

Cllr Pollak says Southwark has the ‘highest level of council building in 40 years’, with 11,000 planned by 2043, but prohibitive land prices are holding up progress and straining its purse.

It’s going to get HOT in Peckham

LONDON’S FIRST ever hot sauce festival will be held in Peckham’s Copeland Park this April, with free entry all day.

The Hot Sauce Society festival will bring together more than 30 independent hot sauce makers from the UK and abroad to sell their range of hot sauces, chutneys and chilli jams.

The day-long festival will also include a range spicy games and workshops for all ages, with food, alcohol and gift stalls. Hot sauce beer pong and DJ sets with ‘party bangers and disco floor fillers’ are also promised for adult guests.

Traders already lined up include Disco Hot Sauce, Peckham Sauce Company and Hop Burns and Black present the American Hot Sauce Experience.

Drinks on offer will include ‘The Peckham Michelada’, a mix of lager, tequila, tomato juice and Frank’s RedHot sauce – if you dare.

PLANNING PERMISSION has been granted for a £600m scheme on the Old Kent Road’s Cantium Retail Park, which would include a 48-storey residential tower.

The development, which is on the possible Bakerloo extension route, would see up to 1,113 new homes being built as well as shops, restaurants and a cultural “destination.”

Of those homes, 363 would be designated as ‘affordable’, with 237 ‘social rent’ and 126 ‘shared ownership’ units.

Alongside the 48-storey tower, other buildings will rise up to 37-storeys, significantly changing the landscape of the surrounding area.

The existing Halfords and Pets at Home on the retail park will stay on the development, submitted by the developer Galliard Homes and Aviva Investors.

The new development is expected to take six years fully to build.

POLICE: ‘GUN FOUND’ AFTER STOPPING AND SEARCHING MEN AGED 50 AND 77

A LOADED assault rifle was seized from the boot of a vehicle during a stop and search in Peckham last week and saw a 77-year-old man arrested, police have said.

Officers say they found the weapon after stopping two vehicles in Peckham at around 5pm on Thursday evening, March 7.

MAN STABBED ON EAST DULWICH ESTATE

A MAN was hospitalised after being stabbed on East Dulwich's Dog Kennel Hill Estate last weekend.

The Met says officers were called at around 3.20pm on Sunday, March 10, to an address in Pytchley Road.

Officers and paramedics, including those from London's Air Ambulance, found a nineteen-year-old man with a stab wound.

NURSERY SCHOOLS in Southwark were among those marching on Downing Street on Monday in a bid to secure crucial government funding to enable them to stay open.

Three of the nurseries in the borough – Kintore Way in Bermondsey, The Grove Nursery School in Peckham and Dulwich Wood Nursery School – attended the national protest.

Another two maintained nursery schools in the borough – Peckham’s Nell Gwynn Nursery School and Ann Bernadt Nursery – were “there in spirit”, said Rebecca Sherwood, executive head of Kintore Way and the Grove.

Speaking about her decision to go on the march, Ms Sherwood said: “[Maintained nurseries] are the jewel in the British education system.

“We’re already in a difficult financial position, any further cuts would just be catastrophic.”

The council fully backed the schools, said the headteacher, while the decision of future funding lay with the government.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, the constituency which Kintore Way is in, said the government had been “short-sighted” in not guaranteeing long-term funding for the schools.

He said: “Thanks to the hard work of the parents and all campaigners at Kintore Way nursery and others, and the organisation of my Labour colleague Lucy Powell, the Government have reluctantly provided just enough money to keep nurseries open until the summer

holidays in 2020.”

Nadhim Zahawi, the children and families minister, has said the schools play a valuable role in supporting some of the most disadvantaged children across the country and last month announced £24million of transitional funding for the nurseries.

However, Mr Coyle added: “The Government should use the spending review this year to provide the longerterm, sustainable settlement all maintained nurseries deserve to give our kids the best future.”

School leaders welcomed the funding but argue that additional funding needs to be guaranteed following the next academic year.

Maintained nursery schools are statefunded schools for two, three and fouryear-olds with a headteacher and qualified teachers.

An estimated 600 people marched, said the head-teachers’ union, the NAHT, which co-ordinated the action alongside the All Parliamentary Group for Nursery Schools.

The demonstration ended with campaigners handing in a letter to the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, asking him to pledge more cash to safeguard the future of maintained nurseries in the spending review on Wednesday, held as the News was going to press.

Speaking on Tuesday, Ms Sherwood added that she had finished the march feeling “quite positive” about the prospect of further governmental funding.

“There’s been a long campaign going on for a number of years. By the end of yesterday, we’re feeling really hopeful that there will be positive steps made to secure our funding,” she said.

ROCKY MURDER TRIAL SET TWO BROTHERS will stand trial at the Old Bailey as a date for the murder case of Rocky Djelal from Bermondsey has been set for May 13.

The 38-year-old was stabbed to death near a children’s playground in Southwark Park on Halloween last year.

Stephen O’Rourke, 46, of Grosvenor

Park, Kennington is charged with murdering Rocky Djelal while Jason O’Rourke, 34, is accused of helping his brother.

Jason O’Rourke, of Catford Hill, made a brief appearance in court this week and is charged with assisting an offender. Both brothers are yet to enter pleas.

They remain in custody.

Shocking safety concerns at eight GP practices across Southwark

NEXUS HEALTH Group, responsible for eight GP practices across Southwark, has been rated inadequate and put in special measures by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) after a damning report revealed more than 1,000 test results had been left in limbo.

Nexus merged the previously independent Princess Street Group Practice in Elephant and Castle, with Surrey Docks Health Centre, Aylesbury Medical Centre, The Dun Cow Surgery, Commercial Way Surgery, Decima Street Surgery, Artesian Health Centre, and Manor Place Surgery in 2016. After inspections at the group’s Princess Street headquarters, and each individual surgery throughout November, a CQC report has given the group the lowest rating overall and highlighted a series of shocking safety concerns.

More than 1,000 test results, dating back to July 2018, were found across its sites that had either not been filed or not even viewed and filed by doctors.

Four-hundred-and-forty-two of these were marked as ‘abnormal’. Out of a sample of 30 cases inspectors reviewed, there were five where the appropriate course of action had not been taken.

Inspectors also found a backlog of 4,187 outstanding clinical tasks dating back to February 13, 2017, which still had not been completed. After a warning notice, these have now been cleared. Patients told the News of problems accessing repeat prescriptions and missing letters.

Although examples of care were praised, with the kindness of its team particularly noted, inspectors highlighted staff shortages, lack of adequate systems, staff training gaps, and expired medical equipment. Some staff had not taken necessary DBS checks or infection control training.

The service is now in special measures and will be inspected again within six months. If Nexus fails to improve as required, the group could find itself under review as a care provider.

“We have established processes to ensure that improved systems are in place and monitored in the areas highlighted by the CQC. The group’s leaders say they are ‘confident’ their rating will improve.

Dr Jonty Heaversedge, Chair of NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), told the News patients were understandably concerned by the serious issues highlighted by the report and said the CCG had been working with Nexus to address the issues and ensure no ‘significant harm’ came to patients.

“Nexus has developed and implemented a clear action plan to address the highlighted areas, and has contacted all patients requiring an urgent review and treatment to invite them to attend an appointment,” he said.

A ROTHERHITHE man has become an Indian film star after landing a role in a hit Punjabi movie.

Darren Tassell, 44, played a battlehardened British sergeant in Rangroot, which tells the tales of Sikh soldiers who fought in the First World War The film was a runaway success in Punjab cinema – and now the dad-of-five and grandfather-of-one gets recognised and stopped in the street.

“I was taking my son to his home in South Croydon on the Overground and two Punjabi speakers were sat opposite me,” said Darren. “He said, ‘I watched the film last night and I knew I recognised your face!’”

“It made my son’s day. He loves that I’m having a little bit of success,” the actor, who grew up on the Redriff Estate and still lives the area, added.

Now the breakthrough role has led to Darren being cast in two other major Punjabi films due to be released this year, one even with a Millwall link.

The new movie, Barefoot Warriors, tells the story of a former budding football star called Christian who crosses paths with the barefoot football players of a quaint Punjab village.

Darren plays India’s national football team coach, Stephen Constantine, who was the former first-team coach at Millwall in the 2005-06 season.

“When I rang them up they saw I looked a lot like him,” Darren said. “It wasn’t until afterwards that I realised and picked up on the Millwall connection.”

The second film, Sarabha Cry for Freedom, recounts the efforts of Kartar Singh Sarabha, an unsung Punjabi freedom fighter against British colonial rule.

Darren first began acting as a teenager at the former Scott Lidgett School, in Bermondsey, before joining London Bubble Theatre.

But he had to take a daring plunge into quitting his job in software before finding his lucky break.

“I was offered a few extra roles and I couldn’t give up work to do it and eventually I felt working for someone else’s dream was stopping me following mine,” the actor said.

However, shortly after making the decision to quit his job, he landed a spot on an Actimel Christmas commercial, despite going against 1,200 people for the opportunity. “I got the part, so I knew I made the right decision,” he said.

Now the actor is hoping to branch out in different roles and to shoot in the US and UK too. “I can play any role,” he told the News, but often enjoys playing the clown.

“I do funny characters and voices for

my kids, so standing up and getting paid for it is wonderful.”

However, he is not going to give up on Punjabi cinema any time soon, he says.

“I have this connection with them [Sikh people].

“No matter where you are in the world, you find a man with a beard and a turban, he’ll take of you. It’s just a wonderful thing, they’re a beautiful people.

“I hope my journey continues in Punjabi film.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL must declare a climate emergency and bring plans to go carbon neutral forward by two decades, says Southwark Green Party, as it prepares to take a deputation to this month’s assembly.

OVER 200 PEOPLE INJURED BY BUSES IN SOUTHWARK IN LAST FIVE YEARS

MORE THAN 200 people have been injured in Southwark after being hit by TfL buses since 2014, making the borough the third most affected in London.

The statistics, collected by trade union GMB, show that in the last five years one person died and a 225 people were injured after bus collisions in Southwark.

Fifty of them were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

The only London boroughs with a higher number of injuries overall are Lambeth, with 260, and Westminster, with 350 people injured in the same timeframe.

The union’s analysis shows, on average, four people have been killed or seriously injured every week for the last five years in accidents on London’s bus network.

The union lays the blame at what it says are unsafe working practices among contractors, and has also criticised TfL’s transparency in recording and sharing data around accidents.

It is calling on TfL and its outsourced operators to improve their safety record and support its bus drivers’ ‘Bill of Rights’, which includes demands for access to clean, serviced toilet and rest facilities on all routes, and the right to drive without having to answer radio messages and texts from controllers.

The campaign is backed by London Bus Watch, set up by Tom Kearney, who survived being hit by a ‘bendy bus’ on Oxford Street in 2009.

Ninety critically injured patients in Southwark were taken to hospital by air in 2018, followed by 85 in Islington and 82 in Tower Hamlets. Lambeth saw 81 treated, making it the fourth busiest borough for the advanced trauma team.

Data shows although stabbings and shootings are the most common reason for the air ambulance to be dispatched, this percentage has dropped slightly from 31 per cent in 2017, to 29 per cent in 2018.

Out of the 1,656 patients treated at the roadside across London last year, 469 of these patients had been injured in road traffic collisions – around 28 per cent of the total.

Falls from height accounted for 21 per cent of cases, and 22 per cent were recorded as ‘other’, which can include hangings, drownings, and incidents on train tracks.

This year is the charity’s 30th anniversary, and it is hoped the statistics will help raise awareness that the Air Ambulance’s life-saving work is solely funded by donations and encourage donations.

Alongside lower speed limits and redesigning dangerous junctions, there will be stronger enforcement to tackle dangerous driving.

TfL says safety is its ‘top priority’ and that it has given training focused on vulnerable road users to all 25,000 drivers.

Bus operations director, Claire Mann, said: “Deaths and serious injuries on our road network are neither acceptable nor inevitable, which is why we are doing all we can to eliminate them.

“We are introducing a range of additional and enhanced safety requirements for buses and are developing innovative driver training focused on the safety of vulnerable road users.

“Our bus operators know that safety is our top priority and continue to work with us towards our aim of making London’s roads free from collisionbased deaths and serious injuries.”

Each year the charity has to raise around eight million pounds of its ten million running costs.

A ROTHERHITHE charity has said it is “devastated” after it was burgled for the second time in less than a year.

Criminals are believed to have broken into the Stave Hill Ecological Park storage facilities in the early hours of Thursday morning, taking a large woodchipper, projector, projector screen and chop saw.

The Stave Hill branch of The Conservation Volunteers estimates it will cost them more than £5,000 to replace stolen items and fix the damage – more than they currently have in the bank.

“We’re a bit devastated, we’re a charity. We don’t have a lot of money, we don’t receive funding from the council. Everything, all the money we raise, we generate ourselves through hard work,” said site manager Rebeka Clark.

“Everyone who’s had their house burgled knows exactly how we feel.”

The business did have insurance, said Ms Clark, but said it was a choice between claiming for a new chipper and being forced to pay higher premiums, something the charity cannot afford to do.

PLANS FOR new social rent homes in the second phase of the Aylesbury Estate were approved this week, sealing last year’s commitment for no overall loss of social housing through the regeneration and affirming residents’ right to return.

Details published in advance of Tuesday’s cabinet meeting at Tooley Street show the number of homes already earmarked for phase two – 859 in total, with 287 at social rent – could be increased to around 1,250 with a grant from the Greater London Authority.

Subject to planning approval, this would mean an uplift in council homes large enough to ensure secure tenants from the final stages of the rebuild (phase 4b and 4c) will have homes ready to move into by 2028 – including homes allocated off-plan.

Southwark Labour Group says it hopes these changes will help ease residents’ uncertainty, especially given the entire project is not due to be completed until 2031. So far, Arklow, Bradenham and Chartridge have all

“These plans represent the first major step in our expanded commitment to the Aylesbury community,” Faraday ward labour councillor Jack Buck (pictured) told the News.

“It’s one that continues to deliver for existing residents and ensures that regeneration doesn’t mean a loss in the social homes people desperately need.

“The new delivery of additional social homes in these early phases also guarantees that every resident and leaseholder in phases three and four will be able to move in to new homes in the foreseeable future, securing their right to remain in the Aylesbury community they call home.”

His thoughts were echoed by Cllr Johnson Situ, the council’s cabinet

member for growth, development and planning, who said: “I am proud that we have been able to adapt our plans for the Aylesbury estate to increase the number of social homes across the estate, continuing on our work to see no net loss in social housing on the estate.

“We will continue to work with Notting Hill Genesis to ensure that each phase of the rebuilding of the estate delivers the best possible outcome for the Aylesbury community.”

The first phase of the project already has seen the number of planned affordable homes rise to 84 per cent.

The ecological park centre was also burgled in October, meaning it has been targeted by criminals three times in three years said the site manager, who has been working there for nearly thirty years.

“Whoever did it knew what they were coming in here for and what the site security was. They cut the gate [to the storage] off its hinges,” she added.

“I’m feeling somewhat targeted actually that a group or an individual have picked up on this and thought ‘aha, yes.’”

Agricultural equipment can be sold easily to buyers in rural areas, meaning they are an attractive target for thieves.

Residents have rallied around the charity, with a fundraiser being considered to replace the stolen items.

The charitable initiative uses volunteers to conserve green spaces and runs educational activities about local wildlife for schools.

“One of the really fantastic things has been the local response,” said Ms Clark.

However, she added that “not normal” to be the victim of so many burglaries, adding: “We’ve gone for years and years without being burgled.”

Sixteen-year-old charged with the murder of Joshua

A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy has been charged with the murder of Joshua Boadu (pictured), who was stabbed to death in Bermondsey last year.

ESTATES FUNDING TO REDUCE CARS

THE ESTATES around Bramcote Grove in South Bermondsey are to get a makeover to reduce car use after a successful bid to Transport for London’s Liveable Neighbourhoods programme.

The project is one of eleven successful bids for the £53m pot, which aims to promote new cycling and walking infrastructure.

Part of the funding will go towards reducing car use on the Bonamy and Bramcote estates by closing roads to through-traffic, redesigning junctions and making streets easier to cross on foot.

It’s hoped that the changes will connect the area with the Old Kent Road and future CS4 cycle highway, as well as providing links to Lewisham.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, who holds the transport portfolio at Southwark Council, said he was “thrilled” to have received the funding to encourage

THE FOUNDER of Theatre Peckham visited Buckingham Palace last week to collect her MBE from the Queen.

Teresa Early, the founder and former artistic director of the theatre and drama training hub on Havill Street, which famously nurtured the talent of Star Wars actor John Boyega, was presented with her honour on Wednesday, February 27.

Ms Early, who spent 35 years at Theatre Peckham’s helm, said: “I feel very proud to have received the accolade of an MBE for

services to young people in the arts and very grateful to have had the chance to introduce so many young people and their families to the magic of theatre, and the joys of performing arts.”

Actor John Boyega, who is now a patron of the theatre, paid tribute to her achievements, saying: “Teresa established a place of creativity in our local area and it is in this space that I found myself, my voice and my lifelong passion.

“I’m very proud of her for all she has achieved and the many lives she continues to impact in a positive way. Theatre Peckham will always be home.”

SE1 MAN CHARGED WITH ILLEGALLY FLYING DRONE

A SOUTHWARK man has been charged with allegedly flying a drone illegally over central London on New Year’s Eve.

Qian Cui, 22, of Great Suffolk Street, was charged with being the remote pilot of the drone and flying it over a congested area without permission from the Civil Aviation Authority.

This would breach Article 95 of the Air Navigation

Order 2016.

He was charged via postal requisition and is due to appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on March 29.

Separately, a Romford man has also been charged with drone offences after allegedly flying the unmanned aircraft during the New Year’s celebrations without permission.

Viktor Vajda, 30, of Malt House Place, was charged on Wednesday, March 6 and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on March 27.

A MOPED gang who stole thousands of pounds worth of mobile phones all over south London have been jailed after being caught in the act during a Peckham burglary.

Seven shops were targeted during the two-week moped crime-spree in August 2018, with the three men stealing more than £50,000 worth of mobiles in total.

The trio – Troy Adolfess, 24, of Hamilton Road, Thornton Heath; George Ventham, 23 of Carshalton Road, Sutton; and Reece Raymond Roy Buttery, 23, of Knights Hill have all been jailed after pleading guilty to committing burglary.

Adolfess and Buttery were sentenced to two-and-a-half years each after a trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Ventham was jailed for two-and-a-half years plus a further eight months for possession with intent to supply cannabis.

The court heard that six shops had been targeted during their crime rampage, before being the three men were caught at the EE store on Peckham’s Rye Lane.

Local officers spotted two mopeds at the shop during the early hours of August 29, and noticed the shop’s entrance was smashed.

As they approached, Ventham climbed out from the shop and got onto the back of a moped ridden by Buttery and fled the scene.

Adolfess then came out of the shop and tried to run – but was tasered, detained and arrested.

but were unsuccessful and again fled the scene.

Investigators connected the three men to a string of similar offences by scouring CCTV footage and phone evidence.

Ventham was arrested outside his home address on September 11 where he attempted to flee but was caught and detained.

A search of his home uncovered a large quantity of drugs, for which he was further arrested.

Buttery was later arrested at his home address on September 13.

The 100th brain cancer patient to use trailblazing treatment at Guy’s Hospital

DOCTORS AT Guy’s Cancer have treated their 100th brain cancer patient using a trailblazing form of radiotherapy targeting tumours to the closest half a milimetre.

Corrine Nash, 49, from Rainham in Kent, was the one hundredth patient to be treated using the surgery.

She said: “The radiotherapy took about an hour but felt shorter than it was. I’m quite claustrophobic so I closed my eyes and tried counting.

“The team asked me what kind of music I liked and played some good songs.

“I remember they had The Proclaimers song I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).”

CAMPAIGNERS’ CROWDFUNDER GROWS IN BID TO FIGHT ELEPHANT & CASTLE PLAN

A CROWDFUNDER to help Elephant and Castle campaigners take developer Delancey to court raised more than £5,000 in just three days.

After smashing their initial target, the group has decided to aim for £10,000. At the beginning of this week, their total stood at more than £6,000.

Last week, Jerry Flynn, from the 35 per cent campaign which pushes for more genuinely affordable and social housing, said: "All funds raised will go towards the legal costs of the case. If we lose the case, we will have to pay the other side's costs.

If we win, we will be able to pay our own lawyers."

But, she added, “it was quite hard not to sing along which would have involved moving.”

The procedure’s accuracy allowed radiotherapy treatment to small areas of the brain while reducing the amount of radiation healthy tissues receive.

“This reduces the chance of possible side effects from the treatment,” explained Angela Francis, head of radiotherapy at the Trust.

A coalition of groups including the 35% campaign, Latin Elephant and Southwark Defend Council Housing, are opposed to Delancey's regeneration plans due to what they say is an unacceptably low number of homes at social rent and a poor deal for traders.

Campaigners hope they can overturn the decision in the planning court, arguing that Delancey has deliberately misled the council over the amount of social housing that could be provided.

They say with extra funding from the Mayor's office, Delancey should be able to add an extra 42 homes at social rent to the 116 already earmarked.

Delancey has said more delays will only cause more uncertainty for traders. A spokesperson told the News: “It is now likely the timeline for starting on site will be pushed back which is likely to have a

Five of those attacks were serious enough to warrant leave, the stats released under Freedom of Information laws show.

The request, which covered incidents from January 2016 to November 2018, also revealed eight cases of verbal anti-social behaviour, five cases of “damage to vehicle” and four of “theft/fraud/financial risk.”

However, Southwark Council said that assaults on traffic wardens were down by around fifty per cent when comparing 2015 to 2018, which it attributed in part to the introduction of body cameras.

Demand nearly doubled for services of charity Rape Crisis

AN AWARD-WINNING women’s charity helping victims of sexual violence across south London says demand for its services nearly doubled in three months last year.

Rape Crisis South London supports women and girls aged just five and above who have suffered any form of sexual violence.

Between July and September last year, it had 43 per cent more referrals than in the same period the year before. Last year, more than 6,000 people called its helpline.

The charity, which was announced as a winner of a prestigious impact award this month, says demand for its help is growing.

Although based in Croydon, the charity supports people living across south-east London in Southwark, Greenwich, Bexley and as far afield as Kingston.

They receive up to a year of counselling, and are supported as they navigate the justice system.

Last year, it offered more than 5,000 therapy sessions – eighteen per cent more than the previous year.

Spotting children at risk at night-time hot spots and hotels

SOUTHWARK POLICE officers are among those to receive special training to protect young children at risk of sexual exploitation in the night-time economy.

Eight Business Improvement District (BID) officers took part in the Nightwatch training, run by the children’s charity Barnardo’s, to try to tackle the under-reporting of the “extremely serious issue” of child sexual exploitation.

The officers can then deliver the training to businesses working at night, such as hotels or taxi drivers, so that staff can flag up the warning signs themselves.

PC Nick Morant, a BID officer at Team London Bridge, who attended the training, said: “We know child sexual exploitation is underreported, the training we deliver to hotels and businesses will ensure staff are alert to the issue and take positive action when there are signs of CSE. “This could be the difference between someone coming to harm or receiving the help they need.”

Reanna Vernon, from Barnardo’s, said the training, which is in its second round, was a full day with role-plays and exercises designed to raise awareness and bust harmful myths about what victims of child sexual exploitation look and

behave like.

“The main message is that if something doesn’t feel right, contact the police.

However, [at the moment] not all businesses feel supported in doing that,” she said.

Frontline council officers, including housing officers, youth workers and community wardens have also taken part in the innovative training, in a bid to encourage more people to report child exploitation concerns to the police and local authority.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said child sexual exploitation was an “extremely serious issue” which could have a “lifelong impact” on the victim.

“Everyone has a role to play when it comes to child protection,” she said. “We are so pleased to have Barnardo’s alongside us to work with our staff and other groups in Southwark.

“We want everyone to be able to confidently spot the signs of child exploitation and to report their concerns to the police and to the council.

She added it is “especially important” for night-time economy workers like taxi drivers and hotel staff are aware of the signs to look out for.

Our country is at a crossroads and a People’s Vote is only way forward I WANT everyone growing up in Southwark to have the best opportunities in life but our country is at a crossroads and Parliament faces significant decisions which will ultimately determine the life chances of children in our community.

This week has seen crucial votes on Brexit with an incredibly weak Prime Minister struggling to manage the façade of control despite having triggered Article 50 prematurely and already damaged the UK economy and business confidence in our country. This has been most extreme in the motor manufacturing sector, but I have also met some of those whose jobs have been cut locally sadly. May has renegotiated nothing since she suffered the worst defeat in parliamentary history and has now run out of time.

Her Brexit would divide the UK. Not just in public opinion, but with Northern Ireland separated from Great Britain and with Scotland likely to undergo a new referendum to split from the UK. I won in 2015 on a platform that I will never

support any policy which would damage our community and Brexit can only do that, as well as harming our whole country, national interest, global standing and the opportunities of all the people I represent. The EU is not perfect but we should stay in and fight to reform it. There are simply no alternative arrangements being proposed that give us a better deal than full membership.

The number of local people asking me to oppose Brexit runs into the many thousands, whereas only a handful of people have asked me to support May’s deal. That says it all.

The Prime Minister has utterly failed and I suspect a new People’s Vote will be the only way forward, with an option to Remain being included in the new ballot.

We are also at a political crossroads when it comes to the domestic agenda in the UK. Yesterday, the Chancellor announced his Spring Statement. Normally this is an opportunity to make policy announcements which will have a real impact on peoples’ everyday lives. This Government downgraded

the Statement and have chosen to continue pursuing austerity whilst pretending it is over. No one is fooled.

The Government could have used the Statement to reverse police cuts that have led to the loss of 22,000 police officers since 2010, including 400 officers and PCSOs here in Southwark. People experiencing crime and antisocial behaviour know May is responsible. Last week I called for more action on tackling knife crime and got the Home Secretary to agree to meet Southwark organisations working on this issue to press home the need for the Home Office and Government to provide leadership on this national crisis.

The Statement could have addressed delays to accessing GPs and routine NHS surgery but the Government fails to care about the pain and suffering people experience waiting for appointments and treatment.

Also known as a ‘smear test’, cervical screening takes just a few minutes and can stop cervical cancer before it even starts.

It’s not a test for cancer, but checks the health of the cervix (the opening of the womb from the vagina) and can prevent any potentially harmful, pre-cancerous cells developing.

All women and people with a cervix aged between 25 and 64 are invited for routine screening every three to five years, depending on their age.

You’ll receive a letter in the post inviting you to make an appointment, and a follow-up reminder text from your GP surgery.

Yet around one in three people invited to screening in Southwark do not attend.

Many, however, find the idea of a smear test awkward or scary – this is particularly the case for younger women.

Research from Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust shows that an astonishing 80% of women aged 25 to 35 delay or do not attend screening because they are embarrassed. Of those women surveyed, 71% felt scared and 75% felt vulnerable at the thought of going.

I know it’s not the most pleasant thing to have done, and obviously we all feel a little exposed when having a test, but as GP, I want my patients to feel as comfortable as possible.

EGENERATION, GENTRIFICATION and social cleansing have become familiar buzzwords in Southwark. But less attention has been given to what often underpins all three - planning law.

Similarly, right-to-buy, empty homes, and a failure to keep up with housebuilding targets are well-documented causes of today's housing crisis.

Given less debate is how and why developers are able to make such huge profits in the first place - it all comes down to land.

Specifically, says Southwark councillor Leo Pollak, it is the problem of 'hope value'.

Hope value is what land earmarked for development could be worth in future, many times higher than its present worth.

This is what makes a neglected plot of land with permission to build such an attractive investment for potential buyers eyeing a profit; figures out of reach for many councils.

And it only dashes the hopes of the 25,000 stuck on Southwark's council house waiting list, who see lots of luxury developments springing up, but few family-sized homes at social rent.

Accordingly, the council is backing Helen Hayes' parliamentary bid to reform planning law.

It wants to make sure that councils can buy land with a value more in line with future use, so that local authorities can buy land at affordable prices in order to deliver on new homes.

Hayes, who was a town planner before becoming an MP in 2015 and sits on the government’s housing, communities, and local government select committee, is well placed to introduce the Ten Minute Rule Bill, which is backed by housing charity Shelter, the Town and Country Planning Association, and has cross-party support from MPs. After receiving backing from her colleagues, the bill will now have a second reading later this month, on March 22. Hayes told her parliamentary colleagues that our broken planning system does more than curtail new housing, it is also eroding communities' trust and faith in politics.

Although she spoke of the country as a whole, in Southwark if anywhere, her words certainly rang true.

The murky underworld of the ‘shadow private rented sector’ A FTER JUST two weeks on the job as an intern at the Safer Renting Project in Camberwell, my eyes have already been opened to the murky underworld of what has been dubbed, the ‘shadow private rented sector’.

This is where rogue landlords operate; cramming whole families into single rooms, throwing tenants onto the street and using smoke and mirrors to evade attempts to track them down.

When shadowing a council officer, I met a landlord who tried to pass his licensing requirements by putting some AstroTurf on the living room floor and calling it a ‘Garden Room’.

The specific dynamic of the tenantlandlord relationship creates a real power imbalance. There are, however, a host of laws that rectify this imbalance, such as the Protection From Eviction Act 1977 and The Housing Acts 2004 and 2016, that create the opportunity for a tenant to have their rent repaid to them where a landlord has committed an offence.

The problem is that tenants are often not aware of these rights, have no opportunity to access them, or are just too intimidated to enforce them, meaning that rogue landlords routinely get away with shocking practice.

The longstanding precedent of Street v Mountford establishes that you can be a tenant with rights, even if you have no written agreement, or an agreement that says otherwise.

Many find their electricity and gas supply cut off, their landlord refusing to provide a tenancy agreement, and perplexing chain of dubious agents responsible for their residence, leaving the tenant never quite sure with whom they are dealing.

When council licensing and enforcement teams go out to prosecute landlords and bring them to task, the landlords often react by evicting their tenants, creating a catch

22 for local authorities who left with more people needing costly temporary housing or homelessness assistance.

The consequences of criminal behaviour by landlords on tenants is grave, with the ending of a private tenancy now the biggest single cause of homelessness, accounting for 27 per cent of all households accepted as homeless in the last year.

DIARY OF a Safer Renting intern

Cambridge House is a charity fighting poverty and social injustice from its base in Camberwell since 1889. Sarah Collins, joined the team in February as a paid intern after finishing a law degree at Cambridge University.

My clients are often hard working people with families who are made to feel unsafe in their own homes by landlords pursuing them with unenforceable legal threats.

In these first weeks I have met a frightened family, all living in one room, and been asked by one tenant to estimate how long it would be before bailiffs would come to evict him.

People through no fault of their own can fall victim to unscrupulous landlords for whom money is the bottom line, no matter who has to suffer in the process.

In my new role, I’ve already made a host of mistakes, including calling the landlord’s number instead of the tenant’s before launching into an introduction of our service to tackle rogue landlords.

Memorably, in my third week, I realised halfway through a meeting at Westminster City Council that my shirt had been inside

out for the whole morning.

However, working with the team at Safer Renting, is giving me hope that rogue landlords are not going to get away with it forever.

The Safer Renting Project is a new startup tackling the exploitation of London’s private rented sector by ‘rogue’ or criminal landlords.

Operating as part of the long-established social action centre, Cambridge House and Talbot, Safer Renting is the only service of its kind.

It provides access to justice for tenants of criminal landlords, advocating for them in partnership with five London boroughs, and spearheaded by Roz Spencer and Ben Reeve-Lewis, of Channel 5’s Slum Landlords and Nightmare Tenants fame.

PINEAPPLE DANCE studio founder Debbie Moore OBE is giving out twenty fully-funded dance scholarships at Mountview performing arts school in Peckham.

Applications for the scheme open on Thursday, March 14, with dancers aged 16-24 years old eligible. Ms Moore will visit the new school the same day and tour its world-class facilities.

The founder of global dance brand Pineapple opened her first dance studio in a disused pineapple warehouse in Covent Garden in 1979, and went on to popularise dance lessons and make lycra dancewear the mainstay of 80s style.

Leanne Pero, who heads up Pineapple Community in Peckham, told the News: "Debbie's main aim for opening Pineapple was to make dance accessible to all- throughout our work over the past 40 years this still remains our Ethos and is as important than ever. “This partnership with Mountview is an example of the great work Pineapple Community has been able to do in the community. “As a Southwark resident and someone who has danced since eleven years of age myself, this scheme is an absolute dream come true for someone with a passion for dance and is one crucial step closer to closing the gap to quality arts accessibility for all, regardless of affordability."

This means paying their own way – a shock to all, but especially daughter Mariane and rich boyfriend Valere, the socialist street poet, because amid skulduggery galore Orgon decides to marry off Mariane to the creepy Tartuffe, who likes a drink or three, along with plenty of fine food when it’s for nothing. Should Mariane refuse, her allowance and trust will be cut off.

However, there are many plots and themes to this piece because just one would be too simple! Orgon reveals to the scheming Tartuffe that he has made money by ill-gotten means in the last war, which unwittingly sets off another chain of events, including Orgon throwing out his dim but lively son Damis who he believes to have been plotting against Tartuffe.

Eventually, the patriarch unravels like Basil Fawlty, fuming on stage when things are not going his way and practically turning purple!

HAVING RETURNED from Scandinavia just the day before visiting Harald Sohlberg: Painting Norway, I was totally in sync with Sohlberg’s incredible Norwegian landscapes: the wooden houses painted dark red, the pine tree forests, the big skies, the ever-changing surface of the sea and the big rocks that form a smooth, round backdrop to everything, writes Michael Holland...

The set design is stunning with its over the top ostentation - just like the family - and I quite felt for Tartuffe who never pretended to be anything other than what he is. Kitty Archer’s ditzy Mariane has great comic timing, while Valere is absolutely hilarious and played with gusto by Will Kelly.

Mind you, there was not a weak link in the whole of the cast and John

Aryan Nazi overseeing young former cabaret artistes with a distinct joie de vivre. And the poignancy that should have been present from the audience’s knowledge of where the lovely family of a mum and two daughters are heading left me dry-eyed to say the least.

In the camp none of the inmates know where a thousand Jews go when they are transported out east every week;

they are told it will be a good move for them but dark rumours abound. And in the camp everyone has their own agenda: Victor, a smarmy operator, who is only looking out for himself, has talked the camp commandant, Schaffer, into allowing him to organise cabaret shows for the staff and their friends, using his past experience as a producer and compere in the hope that he will not be put on the weekly train.

Anna, an erstwhile cabaret star, has caught the eye of Schaffer, who remembers her from the nightclubs in earlier times and wants her to dance just for him under the guise of being his house cleaner. Her boyfriend Peter, the show’s ‘comedian’, is jealous and against the idea but knows that refusing the SS officer would not end well. There is also Anna’s airhead sister Millie making up the numbers, and their sick mother Ette who becomes the dangling carrot when Victor tries convincing Anna to succumb to Schaffer’s desires: ‘He will take your mother off the transport list,’ he tells her. Peter, knowing

IAN BUCKLEY’S new play The Project started slow and stayed at that tempo throughout, writes Michael Holland...

Set in a Dutch transit camp for yellow-starred Jews on their way to the gas chambers while under the watchful eye of SS man, Conrad Schaffer, I was expecting more drama, more tension, more evil, in fact. What we got was a blue-eyed, half-smiling,

resistance is futile, uses Anna’s trips to Schaffer’s quarters as an opportunity for her to read any papers she sees lying around that might enlighten them on their inevitable destinations.

The whole plot hinges on a hair placed

by Schaffer on these papers.

The underlying subtext is about Germans obeying subhuman orders while having very human feelings, which has all been done before and done much better.

The sparse set just barely covered as a transit camp, officer’s quarters, hospital and station, nevertheless, good performances from the cast could not save The Project from a slow death.

Sohlberg painted a few portraits in the early years but it was the natural world that he wanted to put on canvas, and not just as landscapes but as symbolic representations of life, so gradually he moved away from the personal and into the natural. There would be one or two people in the early work but they would never be the focus of the paintings. Eventually they would not be there, perhaps a hint of their presence with half finished drinks or tools left lying around spoke of their existence, but nothing more. The artist said of his love of the natural: ‘It has never occurred to me to regard nature as a painting… I have felt its enigmatic and incomprehensible side and I have instinctively sought to know and understand it.’

Sohlberg would take himself away from loved ones to immerse himself in the landscape he wanted to paint, often suffering hardships in Nordic winters, becoming a part of the natural world he loved. The art he produced demands attention, as what may at first seem like a simple landscape will quietly and slowly reveal symbolic motifs that depict the Norwegian psyche and Sohlberg’s soul.

The exhibition will include Sohlberg’s iconic landscape, Winter Night in the Mountains, regarded as the ‘National Painting of Norway’.

Cue shambolic goings on before a rather rushed ending brings events to a close.

The Moving Church - How a bombed out

N SATURDAY, April 13, worshippers and history enthusiasts will meet at Peckham’s Davey Street at 9.15am and begin an eight-hour walk to Biggin Hill.

They will retrace the steps of the Reverend Vivian Symons, who took an abandoned church from north Peckham and lovingly rebuilt it to serve his growing congregation after the Second World War. In the early 1900s Biggin Hill was a small village of around 200 people.

A temporary corrugated iron ‘Tin Tabernacle’ had been erected, with a view to build something more suitable at a later date.

By the early 1950s, the increasingly suburban area had become famous as the home of the Royal Air Force - and its population had swelled to some 4,000 people with an increasingly dilapidated place of worship.

That year, Vivian Symons, from Cornwall, arrived at the church as its ‘perpetual curate’.

Fifty years of fundraising had, so far, only yielded £2,600 and, after wartime hardship, further significant funds to build a permanent structure were looking unlikely.

But until the village had a permanent church, Biggin Hill would technically remain ineligible to become a parish.

Symons decided the only way forward was to dismantle an old, redundant church elsewhere, and rebuild it.

As it happened, there was one such candidate on Old Kent Road - All Saints.

The Victorian church in Peckham was derelict after being bombed during the Second World War. After being spotted by Symons, it was decided the unsafe but impressive Victorian building would provide the perfect materials for the new St Mark’s.

On August 12, 1952, Symons drove to Peckham in a Morris lorry with a builder and began the herculean task of dismantling the building.

It took the reverend and his volunteers three years and four months to take down and transport all 125,000 bricks, 200 tons of stonework, and the roof timbers to Kent.

In all, he drove a total of 30,000 miles back and forth transporting the building, and became a familiar sight in Peckham.

His endeavour was closely followed by the press, and stories of the ‘moving church’ travelled across the world, helping to double the rebuilding fund with wellwishers’ donations.

By 1958, the rebuilding fund had doubled and a local building company, Durtells, stepped up and offered rebuild the church in its new home on a noprofit basis.

The new building was a blend of old new, with Symons continuing to lend a hand. He even used a dentist’s drill to etch the church’s new windows.

On Saturday, April 25, 1959, the new church bells rang for the first time, and the permanent St Mark’s Church was consecrated by the Bishop of Rochester.

In 2007, St Mark’s became a Grade II listed building, an accolade conveyed in part due to its incredible story of faith and endeavour.

The walk will commemorate the 60th anniversary of his incredible feat, and follow the route taken by Symons and his volunteers.

Starting at Davey Street, they will follow the path of the old Surrey Canal through to Rye Lane, Peckham Rye Common,Brockley and Honor Oak, and on to Biggin Hill via Catford, Lower Sydenham, Beckenham, Hayes and Keston Common.

Organiser Mark Newman said: "We are aiming to celebrate the 60 years of St Mark's Biggin Hill by retracing the route from the physical location of All Saints North Peckham to our current site.

"Having advertised the walk from North Peckham to Biggin Hill, several neighbours and friends have made contact asking to join the group.

"We are keen to widen the St Mark's community through a fun event - though after seventeen miles it may not feel that way!"

SHAHI TANDOORI, on Bermondsey’s Grange Road, has been running for thirty years, and has built up a loyal customer base. After eating the food, it’s not hard to see why.

It’s a family run business: the owner, who has taken a step back from day-to-day running is the uncle of the manager, while the chef is the owner’s brother.

Recipes are taken from all over India, with varying levels of spice and of sweet and savoury, offering milder Kormas based on recipes from northern India, punchier Rogan dishes from southern India and saag dishes from neighbouring Bangladesh.

It’s a fish xacuti – a type of curry that I’ve never had before - that is the best dish.

The fish is perfectly cooked and tender, a fragrant and generous portion, and the curry itself is an unusual and yet pleasant combination of flavours.

A vegetable aloo gobi option with cauliflower, tomatoes and onion is equally tasty, with the cauliflower soaking up the flavour nicely from the sauce.

A side of Bombay aloo potatoes, which escapes the greasiness that lots of potato dishes have, came in handy to mop up the assorted curry sauces, as did a well-baked peshwaari naan.

was a shortcut to running the kitchen.

The chef had to learn the skills-ofthe-trade by starting out washing pots and pans.

“He worked his way up and now he’s been running the kitchen for the last twenty-seven or twenty eight years,” says manager Mohammed Shukkur.

You can tell the dishes are prepared by a well-practised hand – they’re authentic with plenty of flavour.

Here is probably the only complaint with the food: a lot of it wasn’t spicy

enough for my tastes.

A perfect curry should feel a little like jumping into a swimming pool, a strong jolt before floating away in delight.

The exception is a lamb jalfrezi which has the heat dialled up to something approaching fiery – the level of spice that is enjoyably hot and exactly how I want my curries to be.

This probably says more about me than the restaurant; most customers probably do not want a scorched tongue after their food.

The spice could be varied, Mohammed tells me, with extra spice levels depending on taste.

“Obviously we try and cook it as originally as possible, but we have to vary the spice levels for the customers,” Mohammed says.

One customer regularly comes in every week and asks for a curry so hot he feels sweat dripping off his face, the manager tells me.

I like the mystery curry connoisseur’s style, even if my stomach probably wouldn’t.

the selection, at least for my taste, mean Shahi Tandoori wouldn’t be catapulted into my favourite Indian.

But not being a flamethrower is no bad thing: sometimes you don’t want a meal that has you grasping for the nearest tap.

Shahi Tandoori is a crowd-pleaser, and a good choice for when you want something reliable and dependable.

There are no spice surprises here – but when you’re planning on a cosy night in, or suffering from a hangover that won’t go away, that can be a good thing.

FEBRUARY HALF TERM FOOTBALL FESTIVAL

D

uring the February half term, the work didn’t stop for Millwall Community Trust and its Premier League Kicks programme.

Over 170 young people from across South London were in attendance for the free football tournament at the Burgess Park astro football pitch in Walworth.

Over the years Millwall Premier League Kicks have delivered free activities for local young people using the Burgess Park football pitch.

The tournament titled ‘Mad About Football’ is part of the Breaking Barriers Southwark programme which is a targeted early intervention youth programme led by young people.

The programme will target areas across the borough where young people are at risk of crime due to a range of factors largely driven by deprivation. Southwark Young Advisors will be at the heart of the programme to ensure that each area of the scheme is beneficial for young people. This

scheme will bring together a range of voluntary sector organisations to deliver a range of interventions. One to one and group mentoring will be provided

by Menitvity, Active Communities Network will support young people away from crime through informal education and highlighting pathways into meaningful employment and Millwall Community Trust will offer support through sports activities.

The open access football tournament saw a range of young people that are regular attendees of the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme as well as other keen young footballers come together to compete in the tournament. The format saw eighteen teams in total enter the group stages of

the competition which had 6 teams per pitch with each group divided between the three pitches. All teams were fighting for a place in the quarter finals with the hope of eventually winning the tournament.

After almost two hours of group stage matches, each team played a minimum of five games before the top two teams from each group earning a place in the quarter-finals stages alongside two of the best third placed teams. At this stage, the quality of football regularly seen in South London was on full display with the quarter and semi-finals all fiercely competitive. The finals saw a team all from Southwark run out as winners after a tense penalty shootout.

participant Edward Olaniyi said on the day: “It was a good day of football. The tournament was free, and we got to play with our friends as well as meet new young people. It’s always good fun when Millwall run tournaments like this.”

Millwall Community Trust Community Development coordinator Gary Otim who oversees the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme commented on the day: “We are aware of the importance of keeping young people active with provisions during the half term periods and the opportunity to use the Burgess Park came up which is a great venue in an area full of young people. We had a week to promote and get word of mouth out about the tournament and

with the help of Active Communities Network and Alistair Findlay at Southwark we were able to run an eighteenteam tournament with over 170 young people in attendance.

There was a high level of effort and technical ability throughout which again demonstrates the quality within the borough. A great day overall.”

Millwall Community Trust will continue provide a wide range of weekly football sessions across the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham under the Premier League Kicks programme.

Fisher are seconds from cup final before controversy at St Paul’s

FISHER BOSS Dean Harrison was furious with the officiating after seeing his side’s chances of reaching the Challenge Cup final snatched away in dramatic and controversial circumstances at St Paul’s on Tuesday night.

Fisher, after a 0-0 draw in the first leg, went ahead in the tie through Mathieu Ramsamy’s goal in the second minute.

Fisher doubled their lead and looked like they had one foot in the final when Pat Geddis finished Richie Hamill’s free-kick to the net two minutes before half-time.

The hosts were on the defensive for the majority of the second half against the side that are top of the SCEFL Premier Division, but were comfortable and there weren’t enough stoppages to suggest there would be so much addedtime.

Corinthian made it 2-1 in the 88th minute when Oscar Housego fired in direct from a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Harrison later revealed there was some confusion among the officials over how much injury-time should be played.

That contributed to the controversy.

Fisher time games themselves, and Harrison claimed there were 97 minutes gone when Corinthian thumped a freekick into the box and Jack Bath scored to make it 2-2.

“Apparently the ref’s looked over and said five minutes,” Harrison explained to the News,” but the linesman didn’t have a clue because usually they tell us to put the board up. He didn’t seem to know. He told us not to put the board up.

“When I’ve asked the referee at the end he said he’s played six. From what I gathered they scored in the seventh minute of added-time. I don’t know where it’s come from.

“It’s just ridiculous.”

With away goals not counting until after extra-time, the game went into the added period when another questionable refereeing decision led to Corinthian’s third.

Andrew Mott appeared to be pushed in the back as he brought the ball under control in his own half, but instead, to the astonishment of most of the 201 in attendance, the referee gave a free-kick to the visitors for handball.

Sam Bewick curled a delivery from 40 yards into the box, and the ball missed everyone before nestling in the bottom corner.

Harrison was asked about the award of the free-kick.

He said: “I couldn’t tell. But I think he’s nudged Motty in the back and the ball’s hit his arm. The ref’s got to see that, he’s right in front of him.

“They’re assessed quite regularly, I think there was an assessor here tonight.

I don’t know what he’ll make of it. We have bad performances week-in, weekout. It’s very rare you get a good ref and I always tell them when they’ve reffed

well.

“In all fairness, I didn’t think he had a bad game until it was getting towards the end. He got the injury-time out of nowhere and then in extra-time it was absurd, the things he was doing.”

Harrison was frustrated with his side’s inability to defend dead balls.

“They’ve scored from three set-pieces.

I’ve told the boys if you’re going to win at this level you’ve got to defend setpieces better,” Harrison continued. “We haven’t dealt with that. Whatever the ref has done or hasn’t done we’ve got to deal with that and we haven’t.

“There are a lot of positives, we went in 2-0 up and we thought we were in control of the game. For most of the second half we were quite happy with how we were playing.

Hamlet denied late penalty

DULWICH HAMLET slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat at St Albans City last weekend and are five points above the relegation zone with eight games left this season.

Hamlet were buoyed by a 2-0 win at home to Dartford the previous weekend but couldn’t follow that up with another positive result.

Sam Merson’s eighteenth-minute penalty was enough to give the home

side the points.

Nathan Green went close to an equaliser before he hit the post ten minutes before the break and George Essuman then headed over a corner.

In the 67th minute, Dominic Vose shot just wide and Decarrey Sheriff had a chance late on but could only find the side-netting.

There was a controversial ending to the game when Anthony Cook appeared to be fouled inside the box.

Instead, the referee awarded a freekick outside the area and St Albans were let off the hook.

“It’s a fantastic season, I’ve just said that to the boys in there. We’ve got eight games left and we’re still in a title race.

“We’ve fallen away a little bit, we dropped some points. But Corinthian dropped points Saturday, so you never know what can happen.

“We’ve got to bounce back Saturday. I think it’s going to be hard for the boys to pick themselves up but we’ve got to do it and stay at it, we can’t let ourselves be down.

“I’d like to think we can turn it that way and it doesn’t go the other way where we feel a little bit hard-done-by.

“We don’t play the victim here, everyone works hard and is honest and hopefully we can get at it Saturday.”

PECKHAM WERE back at home last weekend at The Griffin, but fell to a defeat against Springhill United.

With a delayed start and no warmup the Rye started badly in windy conditions that made it hard to play football.

Springhill rattled the bar from a free-kick but the Rye were soon behind when the visitors took the lead from a corner resulting in a free header at the back post.

The Rye battled hard in the second half and Charlie Eldridge finished on the turn inside the box to level.

The Rye were camped in the opposing half but they failed to create any clear-cut chances as a lot of possession came to nothing.

Springhill were dangerous on the break and snatched a winner late on.

The Rye are in cup action against Orpington Eagles at St Mary’s Cray this weekend.

Failure to sign striker could haunt Lions

WHEN MILLWALL next play a league game at The Den they will have gone more than three months without a league victory at home.

It is form that has plunged them into trouble with nine games left this season.

If a defeat like the one to Norwich was forgivable and understandable, the 0-0 draw against Rotherham now looks like such a lost opportunity. Lee Gregory had a chance to win it with the last kick and things would look a lot better now had he taken it.

Just as Millwall looked like they had sorted out their away form, with their first win on the road this season at Ipswich on New Year’s Day followed by four points at Middlesbrough and Derby, they started stuttering in their own backyard.

They have won none of their last five league games at The Den, and it is results there that will almost certainly determine whether they stay up this season.

You wouldn’t be pinning much hope on away fixtures. Of those nine games, four are away and the next three are Leeds, Sheffield United and Aston Villa. All three are chasing promotion and right now you wouldn’t back the Lions to get anything from them. Neil Harris’ side go to Wigan on the last day.

The Latics could then also be fighting for their Championship lives.

Given those away fixtures, home form is more concerning. Since the end of October, Millwall have won two out of ten league games at The Den. Following those two wins, which came in consecutive games against Reading and Nottingham Forest, they suffered the misfortune of losing Tom Elliott to a dislocated shoulder three minutes into their 2-0 home defeat to Blackburn.

Elliott was just showing some of his best form for the club. He had scored at Ipswich and was a bullying presence against opposition defences, having notably improved in the air, and he was building an understanding with Lee Gregory.

Elliott needs that momentum to build confidence. On his first start after his recovery against Preston, he got the ball in the centre of the pitch and didn’t appear to know what to do with it. The home fans were immediately on him, Millwall lost 3-1 and it was all doom and gloom again.

With age continuing to reduce Steve Morison’s influence, the need for a striker in January was obvious.

The market is not an easy place to be in January, as boss Harris emphasised several times, but the failure to recruit could be so costly. Consider that Tom Bradshaw suffered a season-ending

injury on November 3, Millwall had two full months to find a replacement, three including January.

Yet they were relying on other clubs signing players. Meanwhile one of Millwall’s relegation rivals, Reading, went and got Nelson Oliveira on loan from Norwich. Oliveira, who has since picked up a hamstring problem, scored three goals in his first six games, goals that contributed to his side securing seven points.

Contrast that to Millwall, who hadn’t seen a striker score in the league until Lee Gregory’s goal in the 2-1 defeat at Bolton last Saturday. Another relegation rival, Wigan, signed centreforward Leon Clarke from Sheffield United.

Bolton would have strengthened in that area, too, if they hadn’t been in such financial turmoil.

Teams can create as many chances as they like but it’s little good if there is no striker to put the ball in the net.

That’s where the statistics are damning.

Elliott’s last league goal at The Den was in October, Gregory’s in December and Steve Morison’s in October. It goes a long way to explaining the poor home form.

Millwall are relying on those players to drag them out of trouble. It seems Fred Onyedinma – who Harris said was “unplayable” in training after his return from his loan spell at Wycombe – has had his chance and will get few more.

George Alexander, who has shown so much promise with the under-23s, is too young. Perhaps next season we will see him, and, to be brutally honest, he will have a better chance of breaking through in League One.

But Millwall still have nine games to ensure they won’t be back there after just two seasons in the second tier.

They still should have enough experience, enough fight, enough spirit to survive and the knowhow of being in pressure situations towards the end of the last three seasons should be advantageous.

Their next home league game is against West Brom, who sacked manager Darren Moore despite being fourth. The clubs have different expectations, but Lions fans do expect their side to stay up.

If they don’t, then questions will be asked why they couldn’t get a striker in the last transfer window. And if they’re in League One then the rebuilding challenge will be even more monumental.

Poor Lions taught lesson

PESSIMISTIC MILLWALL fans probably suspected what was coming.

Last week Bolton’s training ground was closed as they had no food or fuel. Players weren’t paid.

Staff weren’t paid. The game was in doubt until Wednesday. Phil Parkinson was banned from the touchline.

Yet with all that Bolton won.

Won easily. This was one of the worst defeats in Neil Harris’ time in charge at the club.

The away fans, 664 of them, maybe for the first time in that spell really let the players and manager know what they thought of it. A four-letter word repeated over and over, unfit for printing here, but starting with ‘s’ and ending with ‘t’.

The Lions did kick late on but that only raised questions as to why it took going down 2-0 to start playing football.

Parkinson watched the game high up in the camera gantry at the University of Bolton Stadium and obviously saw something Harris and his staff didn’t.

After sprinting down a number of flights of stairs to deliver his half-time team-talk, his side were a team transformed after a turgid first half.

They deservedly took the lead in the 48th minute when Joe Williams found right-back Pawel Olkowski and he turned inside before shooting low to the far corner.

If that wasn't bad then the second goal was downright embarrassing.

When Williams hooked the ball away from the edge of his own box it was inexcusable that Gary O’Neil was left on halfway with no Millwall player in front of him.

Worse followed. O’Neil is now 35 and cover arrived, yet the veteran was able to continue his run before firing past Jordan Archer into the same far corner that Olkwoski had found.

The disgusted chants from the away end soon followed.

Harris brought on Ben Marshall and Steve Morison, played three out-and-out strikers in front of a three-man midfield anchored by Ben Thompson, who was the side’s best player.

Millwall finally began to play, and Lee Gregory scored a goal, when he flicked Jed Wallace’s cross through his own legs with the instep of his right foot, that was worthy of winning any game.

Not this one, though, the Lions deserving nothing.

STEVE MORISON acknowledges Millwall face a daunting Championship run-in – but is confident that will bring out the best in the side.

Five of Millwall’s nine remaining opponents – Leeds, West Brom, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Bristol City – are all chasing promotion.

Another, Brentford, may even feel they have an outside shot.

Only QPR and Stoke are likely to have little to play for as it seems certain they will be safe.

Millwall travel to Wigan on the last day when both clubs’ second-tier futures could be on the line.

Last season, the Lions won at Elland Road and secured draws at Villa, Sheffield United and Bristol City as they finished eighth, three points outside the top six.

It’s a different story this campaign, but one that is familiar to Morison.

The Millwall captain was on loan at The Den in 2013-14 when Ian Holloway was in charge and Martyn Woolford scored on the last day against Bournemouth to keep the Lions up.

Morison believes Millwall are in a much better place now, though he admits the 2018-19 Championship version is much more competitive five years on.

“It was a different football club then, it wasn’t in a very good place,” Morison said. “It was tough but I don’t think the league was as good then as it is now.

“Going into the last game the good thing about it was it was in our hands.

I think that’s the good thing about this situation now, it’s in our hands.

“It could be a lot worse, we could be Ipswich. As long as it’s in your hands you can be a lot calmer and a lot cooler about it. We just need to better, there’s not much more than that I can

Morison stresses Millwall are working as hard as they have ever done, pointing out that the numbers posted on a wall at the training ground by head of sports science Laurence Bloom back that up.

There have been more injuries than last season and a less settled side, but Morison is in no mood to look for sympathy.

“Let’s not make excuses, we’ve not been good enough at times this season,” Morison said. “The league has got better, teams have really done their homework and done jobs on us, which we didn’t experience last year.

“As a group we’re still covering the same distances. People can say we don’t try and all that malarkey – it’s a load of nonsense. The stats are on the wall, we see them every day we come in. We cover the same distances and run as fast and as hard as we always have done.

“It’s more been the moments of quality when we’ve needed them, they haven’t been there. There have been silly mistakes, individually I think we’ve all made some kind of mistake this year which has led to a goal.

“It’s frustrating because if those little things don’t happen you’re in a much better position.

“There are things we need to sort out and we need to get together quickly and eradicate the mistakes. If we do that going into the last number of games then I’m sure we’ll pick up more wins than losses.”

Former Crystal Palace forward Murray hit two extra-time goals to clinch a 3-1 win at West Brom in the last round.

Murray scored his thirteenth of the season in a 2-1 win over bitter rivals Palace at Selhurst Park in the Premier League last weekend. He was initially named as a substitute before Florin Andone got injured before the game.

“The best thing about the weekend was the fact that he wasn’t even supposed to be playing before Andone got injured in the warm-up. He played and it shows that when you get to a certain age you’re always mentally ready.

“I’m sure he’ll be a handful for our back four on Sunday.”

If Millwall win, then Morison will be in a position to lead his side out at Wembley for a second time in three seasons after 2017’s League One play-

off final against Bradford.

But he isn’t allowing himself to look past Sunday.

“It would be massive, it would be brilliant for the football club,” he said.

“You know what it’s like, you can’t look further than this game because you could fall flat on your face talking about that.

“If we get through then I’d love to be involved.”

Ben Thompson and Ben Marshall are cup-tied for Millwall, and cup hero Wallace is injured.

Like Millwall, Brighton boss Chris Hughton’s priority is avoiding relegation. The Seagulls are five points

above the bottom three but have a game in hand on the five sides below them.

“Staying in this division is still the most important thing to me,” Hughton said. “I know what staying in the cup means to the supporters and hence that’s why we’ve given everything we can in the cup and we will do on Sunday.

“Making sure we’re in this division next season in my thinking is the most important thing. Any progress we can make in the cup is a brilliant bonus for us.”

Hughton has fielded weakened sides in the competition so far this season, but with an international break following the game he could be tempted to show a stronger hand.

ALEX PEARCE has urged Millwall to “set the tone” early as the Lions stand one game away from Wembley when they play Brighton on Sunday.

The Lions will reach a first FA Cup semi-final since 2013 if they knock out Chris Hughton’s Premier League side.

Pearce, 30, made his debut for Millwall against Hull in the third round, when Shane Ferguson came off the bench to score two late goals in a 2-1 win.

The on-loan Derby County centreback then came on late in the epic 3-2 victory over Everton in the fourth round, before starting against AFC Wimbledon as the Lions secured a lasteight place.

Pearce, who played in the Premier League with Reading, ranks the win over the Toffees as one of the best occasions in his career.

With Millwall struggling in the Championship’s bottom six for the majority of the season as they try to avoid the drop, Pearce admitted the run in the oldest cup competition in the world has been a “breath of fresh air”.

The Republic of Ireland international wants Millwall fans to recreate the atmosphere they did in the Everton game, when Murray Wallace scored a

dramatic last-minute winner.

“The FA Cup run has been fantastic, it’s been a real breath of fresh air in and around the place,” Pearce told the News this week. “We’ve performed really, really well against some really good sides.

“Everton was a fantastic night for the football club, we had a lot of heroes and to get through against a team with the quality they had made it one of the best nights I’ve been involved in.

“Then the Wimbledon game was a tough one in different aspects, the pitch, the stadium, their style of play that we had to deal with. I thought it was in its own way equally as good a performance as the Everton game.

“The atmosphere for the Everton game was great. I’d played at The Den before so I knew what it could be like.

That was certainly the best atmosphere I’ve experienced since I’ve been here.

“When you come to The Den and you hear the noise and the hostile atmosphere it definitely can put you off your game slightly. It can affect teams, and with the way we play we can get on top of teams and dominate games.

Us being on the front foot can make it really difficult for the opposition and that’s what we need to do. Hopefully that can happen.

“It’s a good way of playing, it’s very direct, we like to get the ball forward early so our strikers can do their stuff.

We want to play in their half, keep it simple at the back. Over a period of time at this football club it’s been successful.

“The FA Cup run has been great for us and hopefully we can go one step further.

“The start is key when you’re

playing at The Den. You want to get the crowd going, get them off their seats and that could be a tackle, a header, and it sets the tone for the rest of the game.

“We know it’s going to be difficult against a Premier League team with their quality but we’ve faced that kind of opposition before. If we can upset them and then play our game then hopefully it can be a good day for us.

“We’re one game away from Wembley. It would be a great day for the club, for the fans, the families of the players and the players themselves.

“It’s a tough ask to get there, that’s for sure, but we’ll be giving it our all.”

If he starts, Pearce will come up against a former team-mate and someone who is still going strong in the Premier League at the age of 35.

Glenn Murray scored in Brighton’s 21 win over Crystal Palace at the

weekend, his thirteenth goal in all competitions this season.

Pearce said: “I played with Glenn when he was on loan at Reading. I played against him many times as well. He’s a tough competitor and a really good guy. He’s done really well in the Premier League and scored lots of goals.

“If he plays then we’ll have to be on our guard, for sure. He’s a great professional and that’s the key behind it. You can go on in this game to a good age if you keep training hard, look after yourself, eat well, and do the right things off the pitch.”

After Sunday, Millwall go into the international break before the daunting clash with Leeds at Elland Road on March 30.

Pearce believes Neil Harris’ side have the experience, leadership and quality to secure their Championship status over the last nine games.

“There are a few lads that are fairly experienced at this level and if there’s something to be said we’ll say it. It’s a good tight-knit group and we’re ready for the fight. We’ve got to show that every game we play.

“I met the manager and he impressed me from the start with his enthusiasm.

I’ve played against Millwall in years gone by, always found them a tough team to play against.

“I always knew we had some quality in the dressing room. I just wanted to come and be a part of it until the end of the season and try to help the boys.”

ALEX PEARCE wants Millwall to meet the challenge of securing Championship status “head on” and “enjoy overcoming it”.

The Lions are in relegation trouble with nine games left, a run that includes daunting away games at Leeds, Aston Villa and Sheffield United, as well as home London derbies against QPR and Brentford.

But rather than feeling the nerves, Pearce is relishing the challenge, having been

involved in relegation battles previously in his career.

He has experienced both sides, being relegated from the Premier League with Reading in 2012-13 having helped Norwich avoid dropping out of the Championship in 2007-08.

Most recently, he joined Bristol City on loan from Derby in January 2016 and helped them out of the relegation zone to finish eighteenth.

Millwall have a two-week break after the FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton this Sunday, after which they head to Elland Road.

But Pearce isn’t fazed with the position the Lions are in.

“Ideally we’d like to be higher up the table, of course, but things haven’t worked out that way and we find ourselves in the position we’re in,” Pearce said.

“We need to meet the challenge head on, and enjoy the challenge. That’s probably the key point that we should be making.

Even though it’s not an enjoyable position to be in we should be enjoying the challenge.

“We want to try to meet the challenge head on and enjoy overcoming it. We need to go for it.

“I’ve been involved in relegation battles with Reading, on loan at Northampton, Norwich, Bristol City a couple of years ago. I know what it’s about, I know what

you need to do. You need to be together as a squad, team spirit is vital.

“We will need to keep believing in ourselves and the style of play. We all need to be on the same page. It’s key to stick together in tough times. It’s easy when you’re winning, when it’s going well.

“But obviously now, when it’s a bit tougher, we need to really come together and show what we’re about, stand up and be counted.

“Not everything is going to go our way, there are going to be ups and downs between now and the end of the season.

But we’ve just got to make sure we’re ready for it.”

Lions spin the wheel

MILLWALL WILL be guaranteed at least £1.62million in prize money if they defeat Brighton on Sunday – and pocket a further quarter of a million pounds if Swansea lose to Manchester City.

If the Lions add a fifth Premier League scalp to their FA Cup pile in the last three seasons, they will earn £720,000. There is £900,000 awarded to semi-final losers.

Another £250,000 is awarded to the EFL club from each division that goes furthest in the competition. Millwall and Swansea are the only Championship sides left, alongside six Premier League clubs.

Should Millwall lose to Brighton and Swansea to City, they will split the money and receive £125,000 each.

The EFL and the FA struck an agreement on the latter prize this season.

Former Millwall CEO, Andy Ambler, who is now director of professional game relations at the FA, said: “At the start of the season, we doubled the competition prize fund to £30.2m – an increased investment which will have a positive impact on clubs at all levels of the game.

“We hope that the divisional progress prize will deliver both a financial benefit and lasting legacy to clubs embarking on a successful cup run.”

Millwall have already won £675,000 in prize money by beating Hull, Everton and AFC Wimbledon in this season’s competition.
