Don’t let the hipsters take the credit

I

N THE last couple of years newspapers have been obsessed with placing every crowd-pulling success down to some sort of hipster craze – when in fact local people might just be realising what great attractions we have right on our doorstep.

Our look this week into the growing number of people flocking to Dulwich Hamlet matches on a Saturday afternoon is a case in point. This is a club with a 123-year-old history and in the last couple of years especially, the club has gone out of its way to make the ground a place at the centre of the local community. They hit the headlines a few months ago when they became a major collecting point to help with the refugee crisis in Europe, and last week fans turned out in force to support junior doctors.

But the club is a place that families can come to enjoy the national game at a fraction of the cost. Last year Hamlet did some great promotions to draw in the crowds including a ‘pay what you want’ exercise with the money going to local charities. This proved extremely popular.

Non-league football is having an up-surge nationally. Last year fans from all 20 Premier League clubs protested outside each league game in a bid to get new regulations on ticket prices. The vibe at Hamlet and other nonleague grounds is far more unique as local volunteers with a passion are behind making each match day an enjoyable experience.

Unlike the games at major grounds you are not treated like a flock of sheep and can even enjoy a pint while watching on the terraces.

Non-league clubs like Hamlet can relax the rules and you can even get to know your neighbours. Plus with the FA Cup rounds and, especially in the case of Hamlet - a team sitting pretty on the top of the league - the football is of a very high standard. This is semi-professional football after all and not a Sunday league game.

As Fisher FC plan to make their return to Rotherhithe this year – let’s hope they manage to do the same in the north of the borough.

Serious flaw in the housing system

W

E KNOW that there is a housing crisis in Southwark but there can be no excuse for placing a young family like Meyrem Walker, Corvel Thomas and their baby CJ, in such squalid conditions.

On their first night in the flat, Meyrem and Corvel discovered insects crawling over their baby’s head – no parent should have to experience this, let alone in a council property.

The council’s promise to send an exterminator is welcome - but too little too late. The family should never have been placed in a home that was so obviously not ready for occupants. Never mind the marauding pests, there are holes in the plaster and stains on the wall. That the council thinks such a place is a suitable home for a young family points to some serious flaws in the borough’s housing system.

A PECKHAM shop assistant who sold sequins to David Bowie during his heyday was completely charmed during their brief meeting, her granddaughter told the News this week.

Elsa Gordon was working a routine shift at department store Jones and Higgins, on the corner of Rye Lane and Peckham High Street, sometime during the early-1970s when the late music legend popped in for some costume accessories.

Her granddaughter Carla Fraser, 24, said: “She was a big show-off, and that story would always crop up when someone else had a good story.”

Elsa, who lived in Deptford, passed away aged 90, but always remembered her meeting with the Heroes singer, who passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer on

January 10.

Actress Carla said: “She was apparently very giggly all evening.

She said he was very lovely and charming, I think she might have had a crush on him.

“She did love stardom, and was always into music, listening to Top of the Pops. She was a big fan of David Bowie and my first reaction when I heard he had died was to imagine her ringing me up on the phone saying ‘oh, it’s so sad.’”

Elsa was a well-known character in the Deptford area, and even gained social media fame when she sent an Instagram message to pop star Bruno Mars with a message declaring her affection. Carla said: “She was 90 years old but she loved Uptown Funk. She just loved showbiz and the costumes and make-up, which is why she liked David Bowie so much.”

Jones and Higgins shut down in 1980 but the building where a young Elsa Gordon was charmed by Ziggy Stardust himself remains.

THE MANAGER of a Bermondsey community centre has said proposals to cut their Southwark Council grant by 25% will hit the upkeep of the vital facility, used by thousands of people.

Beormund Centre manager Coral Newell told the News following a meeting with Council Leader Peter John this week: “They listened but nothing else really. I don’t think they’re going to do anything.”

She said the Abbey Street centre would carry on serving the community despite the cuts but it would suffer as a result.

Ms Newell said: “We have [money] reserves but they are used for the upkeep of the building, like heating and hot water and a new roof. The building is old and the conversion carried out just under 33 years ago was not that great and has led to a number of major repairs.”

In the last few years, the centre has had to shell out over £400,000 on essential maintenance.

She said: “Now we will need to use our reserves for the running costs and the building will suffer as a result.”

She said the centre needed more support from the council, not less, and that the cuts were not fair on the staff, none of whom have had a raise in five years, or the people who use the centre.

“There are so many people and groups who use the centre because they know it is a welcoming and safe environment.”

Young people have also spoken out against a proposed 73% cut to the borough’s youth service, which is being currently consulted on.

community council representative for Bermondsey and Rotherhithe and a volunteer at the Salmon Youth Centre, said that the council should try to preserve youth centres at all costs.

The 18-year-old Bermondsey resident said: “They should keep them open so young people have got a safe place to go. It’s just going to lead to trouble otherwise and that’s more work for the police. I understand they need to make cuts but it’s too much of a big chunk. If they do this we are not going to have a good world to live in. The crime rate from young people will probably go up and there will be trouble on the streets. They’ll be sitting outside schools doing nothing, taking drugs and alcohol and these are children.”

Council Leader Peter John said: “We have worked hard to protect frontline services, keep council tax and rents low and continued to support the fantastic work the voluntary sector is doing for people in our borough despite significant cuts by central government to our budgets over the last five years. However, as we look ahead to further cuts from government we are now at the point where we are having to look at making some very difficult decisions about how we fund and provide services to the people of Southwark.

“It is important to us that residents have their say, which is why we are still consulting on proposals and no final decisions have yet been made. For the voluntary sector the sad truth is that we have a reduced pot of money to offer as grants and competition for it is high with a growing number of excellent local organisations seeking funding, which is why we are reducing some grants rather than cut some organisations off completely.”

Child stuck as smoke filled flat

A WOMAN was locked outside her home last week while it slowly filled with smoke from a chip pan fire – with her young daughter still trapped inside.

The fire brigade described it as a “nightmare scenario”, but luckily the incident in Goldsworthy Gardens, South Bermondsey ended with no serious injuries.

The drama unfolded on December 5 at around 3pm when the mother put a pan of oil on the hob and went outside onto the balcony to get frozen chips from her freezer.

The door, which had a

defective lock, closed behind her and she found herself unable to get back in to her child – with the oil heating and smoke beginning to fill the house.

She called her caretaker, who used a ladder to join her on the balcony. He couldn’t get into the flat either so they called the fire brigade.

Firefighters managed to break into the flat along with the caretaker and the mother. The child was rescued, suffering only from minor smoke inhalation. She was taken to hospital for treatment.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “It’s a nightmare scenario being locked out of your flat with

your child inside and the flat filling with smoke. Thankfully the child only had minor injuries and there was minimal damage to the flat.”

Firefighters discovered there was no battery inside the smoke alarm, so they fitted a new one free of charge.

The spokesperson said: “Everyone should have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.”

The incident, which was attended by firefighters from Peckham, Old Kent Road, New Cross and Deptford fire station, was over by 4pm.

She told the News: “It’s disgusting, I feel sick thinking about it. It was only five in the morning but we got up and went to stay at a friend’s house. I’m not going back to that house and I’m not taking my son in there.

“He’s only ten months old, he could just grab one and put it in his mouth.

If that happens, it would be me in

Councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for housing, said: “We are very sorry that this family has had pest control issues in their flat. The council offers a free pest control service to tenants and an appointment was booked on Monday.

The council’s pest control officers will be visiting to treat the flat on Wednesday 13th Jan, as arranged.

The appointment takes no more than four hours and the flat is safe to stay in overnight after this has happened.”

He added that temporary accommodation is in extremely short supply and the council are unable to offer alternative accommodation while pest control work takes place.

Former cub looking for pals pictured in this 1960s photo

A FORMER Bermondsey cub scout is trying to track down his old den mates – half a century after last putting on a woggle.

Vince Queen, now 63 years old, is appealing to News readers for help in finding the boys he shared a “halcyon time” with in Bermondsey all those decades ago.

He sent in a photograph of his old 27th Bermondsey Cub Pack pals, who used to meet in the crypt at St Augustine’s Church in Lynton Road. The snap was taken sometime between 1960 and 1963.

He said: “It was just fantastic, we used to look forward to it every week.

Everyone knew everyone, there were so many kids after the war and Bermondsey was our playground. It’s not like that anymore, you see kids today and it’s not the same.”

Vince was driven to track down the old gang after seeing the photo posted on Facebook, in which he features on the far-left of the second row from the back.

He said: “I saw it and thought ‘I have that photo too!’ So I dug it out and looked at it, but I could only remember the names of three or so people. It made me wonder what everyone had ended up doing, where everyone was.”

Pensioner critical after collision

WALWORTH: A pensioner was left in a critical condition following a serious collision on the Old Kent Road last week.

The 72-year-old woman was in collision with a motorbike near the junction with Massinger Street, at around 5.20pm on January 8.

The male rider of the motorbike stopped at the scene. He sustained minor injuries but was not arrested.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the accident. If you saw anything, please call officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574.

Diabetic missing without medication PECKHAM: Police are growing “increasingly concerned” for the welfare of a missing Peckham man, who suffers from diabetes and has been without his medication for some time.

A GRIEVING mother has paid tribute to her “always laughing” 6-year-old boy, who passed away last weekend after a lifelong battle with an ultra-rare condition which left him blind and unable to move.

Little Archie suffered from Deletion 14 Q12, a syndrome caused by a missing chromosome which stunts growth, restricts mobility and vision and reduces life expectancy.

He passed away on January 9, after spending his six short years cheering up his family in Nunhead and surprising doctors, despite constant discomfort in his final days.

His mother, Aine Green, told the News: “He was always smiling and laughing, even at the end. He developed epilepsy, but even after having a fit he would smile to show us that he was okay. He was more concerned with how we were feeling.

“Even the day before he died, he heard something funny and started

Archie was a complete “mummy’s boy” who “loved his cuddles”, and also adored spending time with his dad when he came to visit.

Aine said: “His dad would blow a raspberry and he would laugh so much. His dad loved him and Archie would be so excited to hear his voice saying ‘Archie boy!’ Sometimes he wouldn’t even need to hear him, he would know from the sound of his feet.”

The family shared some fantastic memories together, including a recent visit to the beach in Southend – “he

loved it down there in the sand” – and Archie’s first day at Cherry Gardens School in Bermondsey.

Aine said: “We didn’t think we would get to that milestone, his first day of school. He surprised everyone, and he loved school, they all loved him there. They were just fantastic with him there. When he got on the bus he would be laughing and would cheer everyone up, they loved picking him up and dropping him home again.”

Archie was also a great little brother, causing no trouble for his elder siblings Annie, 11, Niamh, 16,

and Alex, 21.

Aine said: “He loved them and they loved him so much, he was a good little brother. Niamh was very good, she used to mother him a lot, and Annie would always read him books in bed. He loved listening to stories.”

What struck everyone about Archie, even more than his sense of humour and contagious laugh, was his strength in the face of all the problems he faced in his tragically short life.

Aine said: “He was fighting to the end, he didn’t give up. He was not a crier, there is not one picture we have of him where he isn’t looking happy.

He was such a strong boy, it didn’t matter what life threw at him or how much his little body suffered, he just kept fighting.”

BERMONDSEY CHILDREN were symbolically handed the keys to Galleywall Primary School by the Mayor of Southwark last

week, with just months to go until the school opens for the first time in September.

The children also carried coal and bread into the school to help bring in the New Year, as is an old English tradition.

Headteacher of the new school Sheila Cohring said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to bring Galleywall School back to life.

“This school will represent the creativity and diversity that is the city of London.”

Community Support Officer will remain in every ward in every London borough.

The cuts would have come on top of previous reductions in PCSO numbers, in the borough with 110 support officers (or 77 percent) lost from Southwark’s streets since May 2010. Southwark Liberal Democrat Community Safety Spokesperson, Councillor David Hubber, said: “Police Community Support Officers have been serving our neighbourhoods for over thirteen years now. They play a vital role in

acting as eyes and ears in the community and helping to keep our borough safer.

“Southwark Liberal Democrats have kept up the pressure on the Mayor.

We handed in our petition this month signed by thousands of residents calling on him to scrap his pointless council tax cut to allow our PCSOs to continue at current levels.

“It’s great news that the Metropolitan Police have responded to the huge concerns of Southwark residents and we will keep our existing number of PCSOs in the community.”

SOUTHWARK POLICE community support officers are not so blue after hearing their jobs have been saved.

In September it was proposed the borough could lose all of its 33 PCSOs in one fell swoop of cuts to neighbourhood policing.

The Mayor of London dismissed a question from Caroline Pidgeon, London Assembly Member and Lib Dem nomination for Mayor, about the possibility of the station moving from Transport for London’s Zone 2 to the Zone 1/2 boundary zone.

She said it was bizarre that Stratford’s stations, which have recently been rezoned, were now in the same zone as Bermondsey – despite being far further from London’s city centre.

She said: “It makes no sense at all. I have continued to campaign for Bermondsey to be a boundary Zone 1/2 station so local residents can benefit from better fares and to recognise Bermondsey's central location.

“Clearly tube stations can be rezoned, yet when I recently asked the Mayor again to rezone

Bermondsey as a Zone 1 station he once again refused to make this sensible change.”

She said the rejection, which will deny commuters “considerable savings in fares”, was just the latest in a pattern of disrespect towards Southwark residents by the Conservative heavyweight.

Ms Pidgeon said: “Whether it is excluding Rotherhithe from the cycle hire scheme or penalising users of Bermondsey Tube station it seems Boris Johnson simply can’t stop punishing local residents.”

Mr Johnson explained the rezoning of Stratford’s stations, as well as Abbey Road, Canning Town, Star Lane, and West Ham Stations, were “unique” situations.

He said: “The rezoning is a key element of my plans to secure the Olympic legacy and should ultimately be self-funding as a result of the increased value of land owned

by GLA functional bodies in the Stratford area.

“This makes the case for the Stratford rezoning unique and so it should not be taken as a precedent justifying further changes elsewhere.”

HAS YOUR New Year’s fitness resolution already run out of gas? Mechanics Kwik Fit are trying to get the borough’s residents back on track, with a series of exhaust-ing work-out sessions in the New Kent Road this month.

The free 30-minute lessons will use just car and van tyres, bringing a whole new meaning to tiring yourself out. They will involve tyre flips, lifts and throws, and have been devised by Kwik Fit technicians and personal trainer Mikah Simpson.

He said: “There’s no doubt tyres are a brilliant foundation to a work out – not only for lifting, but on the floor during cardio exercises. The most important thing when getting fit is to simply get started and do something you enjoy.”

Fans flood to a new way of football and it’s nothing to do with hipsters!

THERE IS something a little bit special happening at Champion Hill.

It would be easy to simply point to the attendance sizes as evidence of a Southwark footballing revolution, with the number of people visiting Dulwich Hamlet FC’s picturesque stadium growing season after season.

Just five years ago, crowds rarely exceeded the low-hundreds. Last week, however, at a rainy mid-season league match against unglamorous Enfield Town, 2,249 fans packed into the ground – a higher draw than some Football League clubs three divisions above.

“I couldn’t believe it,” fan and Forward The Hamlet podcast creator Ben Sibley told the News. “When I first started coming two years ago, I used to stand by the turnstiles when people were arriving and I knew almost all the faces. Now I watch as people come in and I recognise hardly anyone!”

He may have recognised at least two new faces at the last game: former

England football captain Rio Ferdinand and comedian Mickey Flanagan (who, admittedly, was decked out in Enfield colours), just two of the most recent fans to be drawn down to the Hamlet.

The crowd size, however, is only the half the story, as anyone who has attended a game at the Hamlet will know. But, despite what some reports in the national media may have you believe, it’s not all to do with the “hword.”

Ben said: “One paper did a feature calling us ‘London’s most hipster football club’, going on about craft beer and other things taken out of context. It was trash. Yes, some of it is true, but it’s missing the point.

Dulwich Hamlet is one of the most famous, if not the most famous, nonleague club. It has a fantastic history which has been ignored by other reporters.”

Hamlet’s 123-year history is certainly storied. Players as varied as Hussein Hugazi, who went on to become an Egyptian footballing icon, to Edgar Kail, the last non-league player to represent England at full international level, have pulled on the famous pink kit, while Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam are counted among the teams beaten by the south London side. It’s impossible to ignore history at Dulwich, even when ordering a pint: at next Saturday’s match, the clubhouse bar will debuting a new beer

named after a player who last wore a Dulwich shirt 83 years ago.

But it is the evolution of the club’s unique ethos over the last few seasons which has really catapulted Dulwich Hamlet into the limelight and seen attendances first double, then quadruple, and continue to grow still.

Last season, the club played a milestone friendly against Stonewall FC, Britain’s first gay football team.

Gay pride flags and union banners line the pitch and the crowd boasts a diversity of ethnicities and ages rare in football. On the path running alongside the pitch, groups of children play pickup games while their parents watch the real action on the field. Even the crowd’s chants of “sexy football!” and

“transpontine!” stick out as unique. It’s as much a place to take a date as to meet your friends for a drink – craft beer or not. The players on the field are also doing their best to keep up with the progress off it, with the club currently sitting proud at the top of the Isthmian League – the seventh tier of English football. With a season run-in that includes home clashes with some of Dulwich’s main promotion contenders, it is likely that attendances will continue to rise as the season reaches its climax.

Ben said: “We thought it might slow down last season after the play-off loss but this season has seen crowds rise again. I just don’t know when it will stop. Obviously the crowd will be limited by the stadium’s 3000-person capacity so that might be it.”

With a proposed new, larger stadium on the horizon, however, even that limit may soon be breached. In a world of £70 Premier League tickets and millionaire footballers, a corner of Southwark has found itself at the heart of a new way of football, focusing on inclusivity, affordability and fun. Just don’t call the fans hipsters!

DULWICH HAMLET Football Club will honour its greatest ever player next week with the launch of a special new ale in the clubhouse bar.

The tribute tipple will be called Edgar Kail Pale Ale, a tongue-twisting nod to the club legend on the 40th anniversary of his death.

Shaun Wilkinson, hospitality manager at the club’s Champion Hill stadium, predicted that the 4% pale ale would be as popular with Hamlet fans as the player it is named after.

He said: “It’s a spin-off of a previous drink by brewers Late Knights, who sponsor the kit, so it should be a big seller. The crowds keep getting bigger so we hope it gets a good reaction.”

Kail, who made his debut at the age of just 15 in 1915, scored more than 400 goals for Hamlet during his time with the club.

The Camberwell-born striker was called up to the England squad in 1929, becoming the last non-league club to ever represent the Three Lions.

POLICE ARE hunting for a man after an argument about music coming from a phone resulted in a violent head-butt attack in London Bridge Station.

Although he last pulled on the famous blue and pink strip in 1933, Kail’s name is still sung by the evergrowing crowds at every game.

In recent years, a Blue Plaque commemorating the Dulwich icon has been put up at the stadium, with the road leading to the stadium also renamed Edgar Kail Way.

The incident, which left the 39-yearold male victim with minor injuries to his nose, occurred shortly after midnight on December 9.

Investigating officers have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection to the incident.

The incident was sparked when the alleged attacker took issue with music coming from a phone belonging to the victim’s friend. Detective Constable Steve Ajayi said: “There is no excuse for such violent behaviour and we need people to help us find the person responsible. I am confident the man in the image will be able to assist with our investigation. Know him? A BERMONDSEY woman celebrated her 90th birthday last week, on the same estate she’s lived on for her whole life.

Doris Davies was born on January 6, 1926, in a flat at The Guinness

Partnership housing scheme, only moving once to her current residence, after redevelopments in the 1970s.

Birthday festivities took place last Wednesday, where Doris was visited

by The Guinness Partnership housing association and the occasion was commemorated with some special gifts.

She posed for photographs with her personalised cake, but she also received a letter from the organisation’s chief executive and some historic photos dating from as far back as 1890.

Doris said: “This is a wonderful surprise. I wasn’t expecting anything so I really appreciate these gifts. Seeing the photos of the area

from when I was a little girl has brought back some great memories.”

Reminiscing about the past, she was able to enjoy the day with her two nieces.

Aylesbury man to stand in by-election WALWORTH

A FORMER homeless man is trying to stop the council demolishing his block by getting elected and fighting it from the inside.

Dean Porter, 39, was on the streets for around five years before selling the Big Issue helped him save enough money to get his motorbike license and become a courier so he could support himself.

After moving onto the Aylesbury a couple of years ago, Dean was dismayed to find out it his new home had been earmarked for demolition.

Now Dean is standing to become a local councillor. Southwark Labour’s Dan Garfield resigned after he was found guilty of beating his wife in November, triggering a by-election at the end of this month and Dean is hoping to fill his shoes. “There are still thousands of us living on the Aylesbury, and many of us don’t want to move. We don’t want to be forced out of the area,” said Dean.

Another Aylesbury resident, Lauren Pemberton-Nelson, is also standing in the by-election on January 21. Lauren will be representing the Southwark

Liberal Democrats and says she is fighting for basic local improvements from cleaner streets and estates to better lighting, especially on the Aylesbury Estate where she says residents feel forgotten and neglected.

Southwark Conservatives have put up Bakerloo line driver David Furze, who is also calling for Aylesbury leaseholders to get a fair deal as the council seeks to purchase their homes for demolition.

The Labour candidate is local resident Samantha Jury-Dada. Samantha grew up on a London council estate and lives on the Walworth Road close to East Street. She graduated from university last year and now wants to make a difference for her community.

Elizabeth Estate resident, Nick Hooper is standing for the Green Party and is campaigning on issues of housing and regeneration in central London.

Black cabbie, Toby Prescott is the UKIP candidate. If elected, the father of three says he will fight not just to maintain but improve all services for residents and businesses in Faraday ward. Local businessman Amadu Kanumansa is standing for the All People’s Party’s and has said he pledges to fight for more homes at social rent, and proper scrutiny of the council.

Doris Davies, 90, celebrated her birthday on the estate she has lived on her entire life

The association celebrated its 125th anniversary last year. Doris’s niece Patricia Bygrave, was also born in the same flat.

Patricia said: “Several members of our family were born here so it means a lot to us that Guinness is celebrating with us.”

Police find foot-long knife after group of youths flee

SOUTHWARK: A foot-long knife was confiscated by Southwark police last week after a group of young people fled when approached by officers.

Sergeant Chris Iliffe posted a photo of the blade on social media on January 9 and said: “Recovered today in SE1 after a group of youths ran off on sight of police and discarded a knife.”

Sgt Iliffe is a member of the Safer Neighbourhood Team for Grange ward, which stretches from The Shard to the Blue.

A SOUTHWARK hospital trust has been hit by a London-wide nursing shortage with hundreds of vacant posts to be filled.

The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust had just over a quarter of its nursing posts vacant in July last year, according to a freedom of information request put in by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).

At the same time, King’s College Hosptial Trust had 653 nursing vacancies, sixteen percent of nursing posts, and Guy’s and St Thomas’s had 677 nursing vacancies, fourteen percent of all nursing posts.

RCN London said historic cuts to training places, plus an ongoing pay freeze imposed by the government, meant many London trusts were unable to find the permanent staff they need.

As trusts like SlaM try to fill hundreds of vacancies, they are forced to spend huge sums on temporary agency staff or recruiting overseas.

RCN London Regional Director Bernell Bussue said: “London faces a critical shortage of registered nursing staff.

“The problem is partly down to shortsighted workforce planning

which saw training posts cut in the past, meaning there aren’t enough home grown nurses coming through the system.

“The Government urgently needs to give nursing staff a pay rise at a level which helps them settle in the capital for the long term, before staffing shortages start to damage the quality of care which London’s patients receive.”

A spokesperson for SlaM said the trust had “significantly improved” its vacancy position over the last few months from 440 vacancies to

355.

“We have made significant inroads into the nursing vacancies and are on target with our recruitment strategy. We are recruiting to fill more vacancies than we were this time last year, as we are converting bank and agency posts into substantive roles, and actively recruiting in order to help us to maintain safe staffing levels.

We are currently advertising and recruiting to 121 of our nursing vacancies.”

pointed out that in November 2015, its nurse vacancy rate had improved to 13.6 per cent, down from July’s 16 per cent. She commented: “In the last year, we have recruited more permanent nursing staff at our hospitals, and reduced the amount we spend on expensive agency staff. We aim to build on the progress we have made over the coming year.”

The News contacted Guy’s and St Thomas’s for a comment, but did not receive a response at the time of going to press.

Science gallery gets go-ahead BOROUGH

A £12 MILLION gallery dedicated to science has been given the go-ahead by Southwark Council.

King’s College London has been given planning permission to build the Science Gallery in an historic part of Guy’s Hospital, in Borough.

The new gallery will be created at Guy’s Campus, Boland House, St Thomas Street, and is set to open in autumn 2017.

It will include a flexible exhibition, studio and performance spaces, a theatre, a café, a shop, and a restored Georgian courtyard.

Locally-driven programmes will regularly change to entice visitors to return to the free space.

Money for the build was raised externally with £3million from the Wellcome Trust, £4million from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity and a further £5million from the Shard Funding Ltd. Dr Daniel Glaser, Director of the Gallery, said: “Science Gallery at King’s College London will give us a completely new way to connect audiences with science, art and innovation.”

The Assistant principal at King’s College, Deborah Bull, stressed the importance of the building ensuring the importance of the college with the surrounding communities.

She said, it was set to be: “a focal point for building new connections that will help to ensure King's is relevant to, and part of, the communities around us.”

“The application process is easy, but for children to have a fair chance of securing a place at one of their preferred schools, parents must apply before the deadline. Pupils to grow edible playground ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: A school is set to build an “edible playground” in an effort to promote a healthy living lifestyle for its pupils.

Charlotte Sharman Primary School will grow fruit and vegetables across their large playground, which currently just has a handful of potted plants.

Head Teacher Emma Morrogh-Ryan said: “The Charlotte Sharman community wanted to further develop pupils’ understanding of healthy lifestyles as well as enhancing the school environment.

“Edible Playgrounds provides the opportunities for children to grow and eat their own produce supporting our Silver Healthy Schools status alongside the science curriculum as well as providing a vibrant space for social interactions developing a love of the outdoors.”

The project will be undertaken by green charity Trees for Cities and funded by the Peoples Postcode Lottery.

Challenge for young bookworms SOUTHWARK: Southwark Council has launched a Winter Reading Challenge for the borough’s bookworms.

NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has invested £2 million per year in the Extended Primary Care Service to make it easier for people to see or speak to a doctor or nurse at a time that suits them. The service provides pre-booked appointments from 8am – 8pm, 7 days a week, including bank holidays. Local GP practices are working together to deliver the extended service from two sites in Bermondsey and Peckham. Initially the service is focusing on providing care for people with same day or next day health needs, but will be delivering broader primary care services over the coming months.

To get an appointment at the service patients call their GP practice in the usual

way or when their practice is closed, contact the GP out of hours service (SELDOC) on 020 8693 9066. Patients with more complex needs that are better managed by their own GP would be seen in their own practice.

Dr Emily Gibbs, local GP and clinical lead for primary care at NHS Southwark CCG, said: “Southwark residents have been telling us for some time that they sometimes find it difficult to get an appointment with the GP or practice nurse. We have used this feedback to develop an extended service, which is proving popular with patients.

“It’s particularly important for people to be able to access GP services when they need to over Winter and this extended service is giving our local practices much needed capacity to ensure their patients are seen quickly.”

New year, new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital 2016 WILL mark the opening of the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital, bringing together most cancer treatments and research.

Staff at the new centre will see 20,000 suspected cancer cases and treat 6,500 cancer patients every year.

Terry Weston, 70, from Bermondsey (pictured right), had treatment for breast cancer at Guy’s Hospital in 2012. She has supported the campaign to build our new Cancer Centre from the beginning.

Terry was diagnosed with breast cancer one week after discovering a lump. Chemotherapy followed a week later to reduce the size of her tumour. Terry describes the six months of chemotherapy as stressful, tiring and painful. But she says the trips to the outpatients clinic at Guy’s were made easier by the

supportive staff.

Terry was operated on by the same consultant who first told her about her diagnosis and she has since made a full recovery.

Terry says: “I always felt that people were considering me as an individual, not as just any other patient. I really feel back to normal. I’m very grateful to Guy’s for all the support they gave me and for curing the cancer. I couldn’t have had better treatment.”

Guy’s Cancer Centre Appeal aims to raise £15 million towards the £160 million project cost of the Cancer Centre. Almost £6 million has already been raised, leaving a target of just over £9 million. Donations to the appeal will help provide the finishing touches, from treatment couches and wheelchairs to privacy screens and gym equipment.

SMOKERS IN Southwark are getting NHS help to quit smoking in their own homes this winter so they can avoid being admitted to hospital with a smoking-related illness.

Guy's and St Thomas' stop smoking service offers free treatment and support in a range of locations including cafes, leisure centres and at home. Treatment of smoking-related illnesses costs the NHS £2.7 billion a year.

Last year Guy's and St Thomas' stop smoking specialists gave help and advice to almost 1,500 smokers and 40% of smokers who accessed the community stop smoking service received a home visit.

Janice Hosier, 65, from Bermondsey, started smoking at 15.

She's tried to quit her 20-a-day smoking habit six times but without success. But now, with the help of Guy's and St Thomas' stop smoking specialist Doris Gaga, Janice says Doris Gaga (left) with Janice Hosier she has kicked the habit for good.

Janice, who receives stop smoking support at home, says: "When I got the news that I had multiple sclerosis I was devastated but after a few days I felt positive again and was back to my old self.

Smoking is different. It’s just too powerful and it kept beating me.

"I'm alright to start off with but after a few months something happens, like my Dad getting

pneumonia, and I'll start again.

"I look after my two grandsons and the one-year old is asthmatic.

My mum smoked all her life and had an awful death with machines at home to help her breathe. How can I smoke around him knowing that?

"With the help of Doris I know this time it's for good. The wheezing has stopped completely, I feel more alert, and people say I look better."

Doris Gaga says: "Smokers have to say 'no' a hundred times a day from the moment they wake up, at the bus stop, after a meal.

“If you throw physical exhaustion into the mix, it becomes even more difficult for smokers to keep their energy levels high to fight temptation.

“Because the challenge of quitting is so enormous, our service goes out to people where they live so they have fewer hoops to jump through.

“We help people to talk about the triggers for their smoking and give treatment and advice in places that are accessible so they stay smokefree."

Guy's and St Thomas' became a smoke-free Trust in June 2015.

The 38-year-old hypnotist, who made headlines after curing a woman of agoraphobia, would like to open his own centre in borough A BERMONDSEY born hypnotist, who recently hit the headlines for curing a mum of her sixteen-year struggle with agoraphobia, says he would like to open his own hypnotherapy centre in the area.

Michelle Davis’, 48, from Erith, suffered anxiety which spiralled out of control after she lost her dad in 2008, following a long bout of dementia.

She was introduced to Robert Hisee, 38, through a friend, who was able to use his self-developed Unconscious Mind Therapy to ease her symptoms with a three hour session back in 2013.

Robert, who was brought up on Bonamy Estate, said: “My big goal is to start my own UMT centre in Bermondsey.

offenders and local criminals, who may have just come out of prison.”

Robert said that the three-hour consultation was the average time in which he sees his clients, but when comparing himself to psychologists, he said: “What I do in three hours they do in 15 years.”

Robert said that UMT explores the process of recovery of the mind, rather than the content, resulting in what he believes as faster and more effective results.

Michelle said that that prior to her session: “I was getting physically ill if I had to go out. I was horrible before attending family events, and miserable

during.”

After seeing Robert, Michelle’s daughter got stranded at Bluewater shopping centre, due to a puncture.

Michelle hopped in the car and drove the 20 minute without a second thought.

Explaining the moment her mind-set began to change, she said: “It was only when I got home, and I didn’t once think that I couldn’t do it”, she knew she was getting there.

Robert, who was once the frontman in Bermondsey band The Sound, is set to be a mind trainer for the soon-to-be opened Mind and Body Camp – the first of its kind in the UK. When talking about how much he loves helping people, he said: “It is just a thought, you can have anything that you want.”

CAMBERWELL SCOUTS braved the elements last weekend as they took part in a number of outdoor activities for the annual Winter Camp in north-east London.

Members of the 3rd and 5th Camberwell scout groups joined thousands of others in Gilwell Park for a weekend of archery, crafts, water activities, orienteering, quad bikes, go-parks and campfire fun.

Hebe Barber, 11, from the 5th Camberwell scout group, said: “The camp had been really fun. I had 8 hours of sleep!”

Nicholas Mitchiner, 10, said: “The camp was really good. The best thing was being able to camp with your friends. My favourite activity was the games room. The mud was wet.”

Local teen Valicious is named London’s top police cadet

A SOUTHWARK teenager was last week awarded the prestigious MPS Volunteer Police Cadet of the Year award, beating over 2,500 cadets.

Valicious Vincent, stood to attention above the rest of the 13 to 17-year-old volunteers, when he was given the award by Assistant Commissioner, Helen King last Thursday at the London Oratory School.

The Southwark Cadet Coordinator, said: “His dedication and commitment to the Volunteer Police Cadets in Southwark and beyond has been recognised in the best way possible.

He is a true inspiration and acts as an exemplary role model to his peers.”

The Cadet Corps was established in 1987 to enhance relationships between the police and the local communities,

originally in South Norwood as a pilot scheme.

Down to its success, it was gradually introduced throughout the Divisions, and after the introduction of borough policing, it could be found within all 32 London boroughs.

A £75 annual fee pays for the cadet subscription, which is open to both men and women from all levels of fitness.

Through structured training, the cadets are able to develop their personal qualities and skills, from raising awareness on the dangers of cyberbullying, to leafleting at local London Underground stations to prevent crime, and even taking part in weapon sweeps of estates in high risk areas of the borough.

The Cadet programme hopes to maintain and fuel interests of young people wishing to pursue a career within the police service in the future.

Stop Southwark flooding!

T

HE GREATEST threat to Southwark is not a major terrorist attack but the threat from flooding as the climate crisis gets worse.

The threat is threefold. Some areas e.g.

Herne Hill and east Camberwell are subject to surface flooding, as pipes were not able to handle the new extra heavy downpours, as happened in Herne Hill a few years ago. Flood protection measures have now been installed at Herne Hill by Southwark and are being investigated in Camberwell.

Secondly, the Thames Barrier protects us from flooding by sea-surges and rising sea-levels. Raised only four times in the ‘80s, it was raised over fifty times in 2014!

The third problem is the Thames itself. If the Thames basin received the huge torrents of rain dumped on Cumbria, a wall of water could head towards London and potentially overwhelm floodprotections and flood northern parts of Southwark. One reason the water could head here so fast is because the government pays hill farmers to keep hills free of the natural woodlands that formerly covered them. This is crazy, as trees absorb over sixty times more water than bare hills. 87% of the woods in the Thames River Basin have been removed.

The National Trust even boasts about keeping their uplands vegetation-free.

Also beavers, whose upriver dams would help slow the flow, have been eliminated from our countryside.

The Thames needs a powerful riverbasin authority with legal powers to ensure we work with nature to protect London and to stop paying farmers to worsen flooding. However, the Thames has nearly a hundred separate local authorities like Southwark, responsible for flood prevention. Making matters worse, the government has removed Environment Agency oversight of upland land-owners drainage works. These farmers have a financial vested interest in getting the water off their land as fast as possible and so endangering Southwark.

The Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn rightfully raised this issue in relation to the floods in York. When we contacted the council for their views, worryingly they had no comment to make other than suggesting we contact the Environment Agency. Cllr Merrill, responsible for Southwark’s flood protections needs to urgently address what is the council’s position on this threat to the borough?

The Robin Suite staff in particular Gavin, Tracey and John the Chef excelled themselves. The room looked so perfect and welcoming.

How the Mayor can stop us from floods

WE HAVE been very fortunate here in London to escape the types of floods experienced in

other parts of mainland Britain this winter.

Our housing density and hard paving makes us very vulnerable to river and surface water flooding. In the event of very heavy rainfall we could be looking at tens of billions of pounds worth of property and infrastructure damage, with a high chance of loss of life.

The Mayor must step up his river restoration programme which will increase the storage capacity of the 600 kilometres of rivers that feed into

the Thames. But most are hidden, buried in pipes and unable to cope with heavy rainfall before overtopping. Mass tree planting in the upper parts of London’s thirteen river catchments could hold the rainfall back and slow its entry into our rivers. Restoring half of our front gardens which have been paved over could also protect us from rainfall causing local flooding.

serve a need in public life. In this case a reminder that in many ways we’ve been here before, and it is our choices, both in our conduct and at the ballot box, that opens the door to such nightmares.

The Union Theatre should be wildly applauded for having the courage to put such a hard-hitting piece on, and I would encourage as many as I can to see it.

In the best traditions, this truly is great Theatre.

A

photograph of Peckham-born Dave Godin sat on a bench enjoying the sunshine with Marvin Gaye goes some way to demonstrating how pivotal he was in the popularity of soul music in the sixties, writes Amelia Burr and Joey Millar...

Godin opened the first ever black music record shop in Europe and coined the term ‘Northern Soul’, as well as writing prolifically for Blues & Soul magazine.

The son of a milkman born in Peckham in 1936, Godin ended up at Dartford Grammar School, where he says he introduced Mick Jagger to black American music.

How Peckham’s Dave Godin changed the shape of music forever early jam sessions out of which the Rolling Stones emerged, but resented Jagger for what he saw as the Stones' exploitation of black music.

Later, Godin would tell Manifesto magazine of the moment the two men were reunited many years later in a record studio.

He said: “Mick Jagger came rolling across, and I’d not seen or heard from him in years, and started talking as if we’d spoken last Wednesday. He asked me to introduce him to Marvin Gaye.

“I said ‘Why the f**k did you record Time Is On My Side and steal the limelight from Irma Thomas?’ and he said he did it as a tribute. ‘F**k off! And you can

introduce yourself to Marvin Gaye’.

“Those are the last words I ever spoke to this ‘living legend’.”

It was in his shop, Soul City, which was founded in 1967, that he coined the iconic phrase “Northern soul.”

He said: “I had started to notice that northern football fans who were in London to follow their team were coming into the store to buy records, but they weren’t interested in the latest developments in the black American chart.

“I devised the name as a shorthand sales term. It was just to say ‘if you’ve got customers from the north, don’t waste time playing them records currently in

the US black chart, just play them what they like - ‘Northern Soul.’”

The shop went bust in the 1970s but Godin had already established himself as a pivotal figure in the world of soul.

He was the first person from the UK to visit the Detroit headquarters of Mowtown, the legendary record company responsible for the racial integration of popular music during the 1960s, and also went on to produce a four album series entitled “Deep Soul Treasurers”, highlighting the best songs from his beloved genre.

In later years, Godin turned his attention to politics and activism.

He was a militant atheist, a campaigner against animal

cruelty, an anti-censorship activist and a vegan. As with music, he poured his heart and soul into everything he turned his mind to.

He passed away in 2004 and was mourned by musicians and music lovers across the country.

Toby Walker, of www.soulwalking.co.uk, remembers him as a “very caring, loving, softly spoken and articulate man”, while the Guardian’s obituary paid tribute to “Britain's most effective propagandist on behalf of soul music.”

He died in Rotherham, in the heart of ‘Northern Soul’, but will always be remembered as the Peckham boy who changed music forever.

Office workers in smart suits spill out into the streets to enjoy a post-work drink.

I weave through the crowds - ready to sit down for my after-work tipple and some hearty fayre at Roast.

And in winter, what meal could be more appetising and appropriate than a good roast?

Iqbal Wahhab’s restaurant celebrated its tenth anniversary this year - and its popularity has not ceased.

The place is bubbling with large groups of work colleagues, friends and smaller parties when I arrive at 9pm the only time I could be squeezed in when I booked just a few days ahead.

I’m immediately struck by the splendid setting - a superb, light-filled venue overlooking the market with distant views of St Paul’s Cathedral and trains rattling past.

It feels as though I’ve walked into the most magnificent greenhouse, with vast windows, a shiny wooden floor, colourful art on the walls and bright

white tablecloths.

And the food here is as fresh as though it had just been picked from a greenhouse.

Since 2005, Roast has sourced an impeccably pedigreed menu of British favourites including, of course, roasts.

To guide me through the menu - all meat with a few fish options - I ask my waiter what his favourite dish is.

He adopts a rather stern face and replies: “The pork belly.” Decision made.

But first, starters. Things kick off well courtesy of the Baked Crab, which tastes a lot better than it looks.

Beneath beige and brown breadcrumbs lies the sumptuously creamy meat, flecked with mustard seeds that gives it some - but not too much - welly.

The whole thing has been put back into the shell and baked in the oven, giving the toasted topping a good crunch that compliments the smoothness of the sauce.

The scallops are beautifully presented, drizzled with parsley and maple cured bacon dressing and decorated with delicate pea shoots.

Each of the three morsels has been seared and tastes fresh and well cooked.

Between courses I sip good Malbec (another of the waiter’s recommendations, still with barely a hint of a smile) and watch the revellers below from my window seat.

I get the strange feeling of being at once part of the bustling market - eating its produce and sitting just above it - but also of being a world away from it,

thanks to the pristine table linen, shiny cutlery and well-heeled diners around me.

The pork belly arrives, a thick swirl of meat with a thin, bubbled layer of crackling, crisped to perfection.

It is served with decent mashed potato, gravy and Bramley apple sauce.

But there’s not enough of the sauce for the sweetness to balance out the saltiness of the dish, which verges on the overpowering. The veg is a little disappointing - you know it’s good quality but the leeks are watery and look a little sad next to the kale, which is also overcooked for my taste.

Everyone’s favourite roast - Welsh Black beef - arrives, a huge slab of meat, marbled with fat for flavour and surrounded by gravy.

It does taste good - tender and juicy and is epic both in portion size and price tag, costing £38.50.

Although filling - you also get roasties

in dripping and a fist-sized Yorkshire pudding - this seems rather steep.

Prices across the board aren’t especially economical - with the trio of scallops priced at £16.50 (£5.50 per scallop) and a carafe of wine costing more than bottles in many restaurants.

The service during my meal is not exceptional - my friend and I are given each other’s starters I feel rushed to finish my apple crumble.

Perhaps this wouldn’t have been the case if I wasn’t in for the last sitting when the staff want to go home.

Still, food here is the epitome of a good roast, prepared with decent ingredients, in good sizes and cooked well.

As well as the food, you’re paying for the experience of dining at a restaurant that’s at home among the foodie throng of Borough Market.

It’s an experience that shows no sign of stopping - even after ten years.

Hamlet Academy Fundraiser

THE ACADEMY that has fed the on field success of Dulwich Hamlet in recent seasons is hosting a celebrity fundraising event next month.

Aspire Academy is a football and education programme for sixteen to eighteen-year-olds set up by Gavin Rose and Junior Kadi, the current manager and assistant manager at Hamlet, in July 2002.

Since then numerous teenagers have passed through the programme and have gone on to careers in the professional game or gained an education that holds them in good stead in the future.

In addition, the academy supports a number of other community projects for younger children.

On February 9 a fundraising event will be held, supported by England footballer and Aspire ambassador Rio Ferdinand, for the academy that also doubles as the Hamlet youth team set up. Rose said: “The night will raise funds in order to maintain sustainability at the academy. We now see three times as many children as we used too.

“We want to try and keep it so that what we do is free for the children and for parents who might not be able to contribute.”

The night will include entertainment supplied by a top comic and a number of Premiership footballers will be in attendance along with some high profile actors.

Gavin Rose feels his side has nothing to lose this Saturday

BERMONDSEY HEAVYWEIGHT David Haye has said the time for talk is over and he now needs to start a journey that will see him re-crowned heavyweight king.

The former two-weight world champion starts his comeback on Saturday night against Aussie Mark de Mori, hoping he can put on a show that proves he is a live contender again.

The 35-year-old has not stepped into a ring since July 2012, when he defeated Dereck Chisora at Upton Park, and many feel a good display as well as a win is a must requirement at the weekend.

The Southwark man told The Telegraph: “I want momentum and that only happens with a good performance against De Mori, who hasn't lost in ten years.

“I believe that in the next year to eighteen

months there will be a world title belt around my waist. I'm looking forward to getting in the ring in my home town and then re-establishing myself as a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division. Up until now it has just been a lot of talk."

Haye insists that cash is not the driver for his comeback, but adds that will come if his plans go as he hopes.

The ‘Hayemaker’ added: “My motivation is exactly the same as at the moment I knocked down Chisora: to be heavyweight champion of the world.

“Along the way, the money comes. Even if there was no money in boxing, this is what I would do, because this is what I'm meant to do.

Oluade adds punch to COLA squad

NEW FACE Esther Oluade added extra punch to the Community of London Academy (COLA) girls’ basketball team by helping them overcome Kensington and Chelsea Knights 35-13 last Sunday.

The Peckham girls who make up the COLA squad have been an unstoppable force from the beginning of the season, and new addition Oluade starring as they chase silverware this season.

She said: “I've joined COLA because I want to play basketball. Everyone here is amazing and I feel welcomed and excited to play and help the team win.”

Oluade found her feet very quickly on Sunday playing great defence to minimise the Knights scoring to only one point in the first half.

With the help of team mates' Tolu Akinola-Adesina and Shalima Reid finding their way to the basket, COLA gained a solid lead to be ahead 21-6 going into the half.

Other new additions, Damilola Adedeji, Anastasia Khonte, and siblings, Emannuela and Jessie Worth, all played key roles in the second half to

sustain COLA's lead to take home the convincing victory by nearly double Knights' points.

LIONS BACKING FOR HOMELESS CHARITY

MILLWALL FOOTBALL Club and Millwall Community Trust once again demonstrated its support for 'Crisis', the national charity for single homeless people, during their week-long Christmas campaign between 23rd-29th December 2015.

For seven days over Christmas, Crisis opened up centres across the country where attendees enjoyed hot food, had a free haircut, received health care and advice, learn new skills as well as be entertained and enjoy loads of fun activities.

Crisis are dedicated to ending homelessness by delivering lifechanging services and by campaigning for change. Their aims are to do more for homeless people in more places across the UK and help to change their lives for good, as well as to change the way

society thinks and acts towards homeless people.

While many of their various schemes and projects take a well-earned rest over the festive period, a team of Millwall Community Trust coaches volunteered their time to spend five days running sessions across two sites, the City of London Academy in Bermondsey and Lewisham and Southwark College in Deptford.

Their coaching schedule begun on Thursday 24th through to Monday 28th December, including on Christmas Day itself.

Sessions included enjoyable warm-ups and coaching drills, all of which were geared towards a football tournament that took place on the Monday, the finale of Millwall Community Trust's work with Crisis this year.

To show additional support for the charity and the remarkable

work they do yearin, year-out, Crisis volunteers and personnel were special guests to Millwall’s Boxing Day game against Walsall at The Den. The Mayor of Southwark Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle was also on the guest list who wanted to also show her support for the excellent partnership between the Crisis charity and Millwall.

Gerry Otim, one of Millwall Community Trust's coaches who volunteered once again this year, said: "Crisis is an eye opening experience and I'm honoured that this was my third Christmas volunteering for the charity on behalf of Millwall. It highlights that there are so many people that care for the homeless and there is still hope for them to change their lives around."

It looked like Millwall were happy to settle for a draw when Forde

delayed a kick-out and was booked.

Yet 25 seconds later the Lions were in front again when Ferguson sent a marvellous cross to the back post and Morison crept in unsighted to head past Coleman.

“At least I got to celebrate in front of the fans and didn’t have to go to the other end of the pitch to enjoy it with them,” Cummings joked.

That kind of moment was a long time coming for a player who has had to be patient this season with Carlos Edwards, even at 37 years old, showing few signs of slowing down.

Cummings joined the club a year ago from Reading and it’s maybe only now he feels comfortable in his role, given the changes at the club with the manager who signed him, Ian Holloway, sacked a couple of months later.

He had to show even more patience before finally experiencing the feeling of scoring for Millwall, and though his career goal tally

doesn’t quite demonstrate it, he feels attacking is one of his assets.

“I’d rather get the first goal early,” he admitted. “When I was at Reading it took me a long while to get my first goal for them.

Here I’ve spoken to the manager and he’s been encouraging me to get forward and try to add more goals to my game. That’s what I’m trying to do.

“I wouldn’t think to myself before the game about scoring. At the end of the day it’s about defending first and keeping a clean sheet and if I can do a job going forward that’s what I try to add to my game.”

“I had a conversation with the manager about what I can give to the team. He’s given me licence to do more and I take that into the game and try to show what I’m capable of doing.

“That’s my game, that’s what I’ve been doing since I’ve played in that position from day dot. That’s one of my strengths and that’s the ability I have.”

His manager Neil Harris has demonstrated this season that possession of the jersey is nine/tenths of his law. Edwards is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Cummings has enjoyed perhaps his best form for the club recently. It is obvious he

has taken heed of Harris’ encouragement and last Saturday at Oldham he linked up well with Jed Wallace to provide an attacking outlet on the right.

And though they are rivals in the same position, Cummings, 26, stresses he can count on advice from his older colleague.

“Everyone knows what type of player Carlos is and he took his opportunity when he got into the team,” Cummings said. “I like to think when my opportunity comes I take it as well.

“Carlos and I have a good relationship and if I do need any help I know I can go to him quite comfortably if I don’t want to talk to anyone else.

“He’s got vast amounts of experience in this game and that doesn’t come cheap. At my age it’s all about learning and if I could get to his age and still be playing at this level I’ll have done very well.”

Cummings might not be due his next goal for another while, but he knows it’s not all about personal milestones.

“The bigger picture is the team,” he explains. “It doesn’t matter who plays as long as we get three points or get into the next round of cups.

“I’m learning more and more each day, getting information from the staff and it’s good to work on that and take it into the game.”

‘The Magician’ keeps the faith

ON SUNDAY morning, Aiden O’Brien will follow his usual routine.

He will meet two of his best friends, Duane and Brendan, and together they will file into the Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road to take their place among the congregation.

Usually, after religious service is over, he leaves his friends and hops on a train that takes him to his girlfriend’s house.

This Sunday he will go another direction, as a very different kind of congregation gathers in south London.

By 5pm, he will have been the object of praise or thanks or adulation. Or, if the result against Port Vale doesn’t go their way, Millwall fans may question their own faith and wonder what exactly it is that keeps dragging them back to their chosen place of worship.

O’Brien had his own doubts about faith when his grandmother died, but reasoned it worked for him before when things got difficult and he needed it there for him again.

Now, as anyone who follows him on Twitter will know, it’s a constant and consoling presence in his life as well as an uplifting one.

O’Brien explained: “On Sundays I try to go every morning. There are four different services, so four different times. I just enjoy it, and it’s a big part of my life now.

“My best mates, they reintroduced me to it because I’d fallen out of love with it when my nan passed away. I went back from there and regained my faith.

“If you went in there you wouldn’t think it’s a church. There’s so much music, it’s just joyful. It’s somewhere you go that if you’re feeling down you walk in there and you walk out a new man.

“It’s a bit of everything, it’s nice.

“That’s always pushed me on in my life… in personal stages and with my family, there have been a lot of things that I can’t talk about that aren’t nice but I’ve always gone back to my faith and I’ve come through.

“That’s why I’m as religious as I am. When I had faith then, when times were bad, I kept faith, kept faith and then things changed around.”

O’Brien’s friends are Duane OforiAcheampong and Brendan Kiernan.

Duane was once on the books at Southend and is rebuilding his career at Dover Athletic. Brendan is with Bromley after coming through the youth ranks at AFC Wimbledon.

The pair are a year older than O’Brien and he says they have had their own knocks to deal with recently.

“We go to church as a three, meet up in the morning and have breakfast, have a laugh together,” O’Brien said. “There have been a couple of tragedies that have happened in my friends’ lives so they haven’t always been able to go with me. I’ve been going to church and praying for them. They go in their own time and I go in my own time and afterwards we’ll meet up.

“They’re doing well, they’re trying to climb back up into the leagues.

They’ve still got loads of time to do it.”

confidence and if he gets away with the occasional attempted trick or indulgent flick not normally tolerated by a Millwall crowd at The Den, it’s only because the work ethic is also very clearly evident.

Both of those qualities he attributes to the input of his dad, Dave, when he was growing up and trying his first stepovers on the football pitches in Islington.

“Through Sunday League before games my dad would always say to me, ‘You’re the magician, go out there and work your magic,’ O’Brien says.

“Every game he used to say to me, ‘You’re the magician, you’re the magician.’ My dad drilled that into my head and now when I go on the pitch some people might think, ‘What’s this guy trying?’ sometimes – but it’s because I’m the magician!

“That’s why I try things and maybe people don’t understand why I’m doing it. In my head I feel it’s the right thing. Sometimes they come off and sometimes they don’t. That’s always the way I’ve been and that’s how I’m going to be.

“My dad never gave me mixed signals. Whenever I didn’t do as well, he’d say, ‘Next game, I want you to be that same magician.’

“I could score a hat-trick in one game and miss a chance and he wouldn’t praise me for scoring a hat-trick, he’d ask me why I didn’t score four. He was very hard on me but now that I think about it that’s how I would want to be with my kid because I wouldn’t want him to settle for less.

“That’s how I’ve been brought up, I’m never settling for less. He’s drilled that into me and I thank him for that.”

Harris influence convinced striker to pen long-term Lions contract AIDEN O’BRIEN admitted that having Neil Harris as his manager was an important factor in his decision to commit his long-term future to Millwall.

form this season by ripping up the deal he signed last summer and tying him down to a longer contract.

O’Brien outlined the importance of the working relationship with

Millwall’s record goalscorer and he believes the confidence Harris has shown in him is evident in how he is playing.

“That’s massive because me and him have a great understanding,”

O’Brien said. “We understand each other when we are down or upset and we’ve got a great relationship.

“That’s massively important for me and my development in football.

I think it has shown in my

performances that he says to me, ‘Go out there and enjoy yourself.’

He knows what I’m capable of and he knows if I have a smile on my face while I’m playing that’s going to bring out the best in me.”

Harris satisfied with midfield options

MILLWALL’S HOPES of bringing George Saville back to The Den appear to be slim.

The midfielder returned to Wolves last week and Kenny Jackett named him on the bench for their FA Cup third round clash at West Ham last weekend, which the Championship side lost 1-0.

Neil Harris hasn’t completely ruled out a return for Saville, but he says he is happy with his current options with Jimmy Abdou back in the side after injury and Ben Thompson and Ed Upson also competing for places.

Asked if there has been any movement recently on trying to bring Saville back to the club, Harris said: “Not at the moment. George is back at Wolves and was involved in their squad on Saturday. At the moment he’s in their plans.

“We’ve got Jimmy back fit and he played well on Saturday. We’ve got Ben who’s done really well. And Ed Upson is eager to get an opportunity to play in the centre of the park again.

“So we’ve got strength in depth.

George did really well for us and communication lines have been left open. It might be something we can revisit in the future.”

OXFORD UNITED will pose a serious threat to Millwall’s ambitions to reach a Wembley final in April, boss Neil Harris has warned his players.

Michael Appleton’s side will travel to The Den full of confidence after their 3-2 win over Premier League Swansea in the FA Cup third round last Sunday.

Oxford have lost just three times in the league this season with a number of their players, including Liam Sercombe, Kemar Roofe and Callum O’Dowda, interesting Championship and Premier League clubs.

They also knocked out League One Swindon on their way to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area final.

Millwall have already played four League Two sides this season. They were eliminated from the League Cup and FA Cup by Barnet and Wycombe, respectively, but they comfortably got past Plymouth and Northampton in the JPT. And Harris believes Oxford are the pick of the clubs in League Two. “They’re are a really good side and there isn’t going to be anything in it at all,” Harris said. “Having seen them a couple of times my belief is that they’re the best team in that division this year. The league table isn’t far off showing that.

“We saw some very good teams in Plymouth and Northampton also.

That’s a very strong division this year.

We’ve played against Wycombe already as well so after Thursday night we’ll have seen four of the top six teams.

“The top six, seven or eight could probably quite comfortably compete in League One this year. So it’s close.

They’ve got some really good attacking players, some players attracting a lot of interest. They’ve got some young players that are certainly going to be playing in a higher division this year, whether that’s with Oxford or whether they’ll move on.

“We have to be really mindful of the threat they will carry. They’ve got momentum with them so we’ve been very diligent preparing for that.

“But we also focus on ourselves.

We’re respectful of them but we focus on how we can hurt them. The fact is that it’s a 180-minute game of football and it doesn’t have to be won in the first 10 minutes.”

The JPT competition rules mean Harris has to name a smaller matchday squad for the tie, and he admitted that

with John Marquis back in contention and Shane Ferguson extending his loan deal, he will have some tough decisions to make regarding team selection.

“We took nineteen players to Oldham, with Mahlon (Romeo) missing out on the squad for the game.

“I’ve got to pick the team and then decide to pick a bench that could give us options to change the game. When you’ve got a squad of twenty, naming eighteen is difficult when everyone’s fit. Sometimes it just takes care of itself, but getting it to sixteen is even tougher.

“But they’re decisions that need to be made. We’re very thoughtful with those decisions and explain them to the boys. As long as you make a decision always for the best of the team on the day to win the game, that’s all you can do as a manager.”

The 20-year-old centre-forward made the loan switch to the Shots last week and wasted no time in making an impact.

And Lions boss Neil Harris was thrilled with his striker’s first goal in his eleventh ever senior game.

“He’s a great boy, Alfie,” Harris said. “His entry to the first team has probably come a bit too soon for him.

But that’s been dictated by numbers we had in the squad.

“Having said that, he’s a player for the future for this club. He earned a right to be in the squad because of his performances and the goals he scored with the U21s.

“We just feel that at this stage of his career he needs to get out and bridge

that gap between being a really good player in the U21s and playing League One football.

“I think that a move to Aldershot was the perfect scenario for him at the moment. He can experience centre-halves like he did on Saturday and whether it’s a month or two or three it’s about the experience of competing for a place in the first team, the pressure of dealing with the demanding fan base that Aldershot have, and press people to deal with.

“It’s a learning curve for him and it’s a good place for him to go and play.”

MILLWALL 43 DP: It doesn’t matter who plays for Oxford – they will look to get the ball down and play out from the back. It’s not what you would expect from a League Two side, really.

You only had to look at the highlights from Sunday or previous rounds. They absolutely ripped Swindon apart in the second round of the JPT. The one complaint that people have is they sometimes don’t finish their chances. The last two league games they had at Yeovil and Notts County, I think in total they had about 50 shots between them and just couldn’t finish them off.

But they’re easy on the eye when they’re given the chance.

SN: What about a goal threat up front?

DP: I’d imagine Danny Hylton will come in, he was last season’s top scorer.

He was in need of a break the way he had been playing. They’ll also probably play Callum O’Dowda on the left. He’s another one that’s attracting interest from other clubs and I think was linked with Millwall last season.

SN: What’s the view of Millwall locally?

DP: It’s been so long since they played them everyone’s going with an open mind. Oxford have been down in the conference since they played last and they’ve avoided each other in cups until now.

I think Oxford will bring about 1,000 to the game.

DP: They were quietly confident that they would be able to give a good account of themselves. One or two players said on the record they felt they’d win.

They’d won 4-0 at (Championship) Brentford in the League Cup in August, and obviously beating Swansea trumps that, but it wasn’t as big a surprise as perhaps it looks from the outside.

SN: Liam Sercombe and Kemar Roofe scored the goals that beat the

Swans and have caught the eye this season. How should Millwall deal with them?

DP: I think Oxford will change things up a little bit. Neither of them started in the previous round. They may well be on the bench. They have a really big game on Sunday against Bristol Rovers who are just behind them in the table.

They won’t be sending the kids out but they could rotate three or four and someone like Roofe they’re quite keen to give a break to every now and again because he does get through a lot of work. I would be amazed if both of them start.

DP: The jury was out for a lot of people when he took over. They had quite a rocky start but he had an immediate impact on the style of play.

But it took a long time for them to get results consistently.

It’s only in the last three or four months that people have warmed to him. He’s not massively outgoing and it’s taken a while for people to get to know him.

But I think his stock has risen more than anyone’s in the last week or so.

SN: What’s your prediction over two legs?

SHANE FERGUSON committed himself to Millwall this week for a further three games – and the club are persisting in their attempts to secure the 24-year-old on a permanent deal from Newcastle United.

NEIL HARRIS said Millwall made a “statement of intent” this week by tying Aiden O’Brien to the club until June 2019.

O’Brien, 22, signed a two-year deal with the Lions last summer, but the club promised him and his dad at the time a new deal would be on the table if his form merited it.

And the former Republic of Ireland international has responded to the challenge with ten goals so far this season. He has also shown his versatility by playing on the wing.

That has led to some speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League, though O’Brien has always affirmed his commitment to the club.

Harris says the player has been “rewarded” for his form and attitude and that the move is a signal to all Millwall’s young players that success on the pitch will be recognised.

“It’s brilliant news, brilliant for the boy. It’s a statement of intent that we want to tie down our best young players to the club,” Harris stressed.

“Aiden’s been rewarded for hard work. All we’ve done is give the boy some stability, some focus away from press speculation, the short-

termism when someone does well in a short period of time.

“As we’ve said all along, young players aren’t for sale at this club.

They’re here to grow and make us a better club.

“As a club we’re taking shorttermism out of it to give our young players an opportunity to flourish over a longer period of time.

“What we’re doing with Aiden just highlights that even further, that we’ve got faith in our young players.

“Aiden signed an improved contract in the summer because he’d been on the same contract for threeand-a-half years.

“He came into the team at the end of last season and did really well for

us. He’s gone from an U21 player to a first-team regular and he’s grown up a lot in that time.

“We rewarded him in the summer and we decided, as with all our young players, if they do really well we’ll tie them down to long-term deals.

“At this club you get rewarded for doing well, not for past history, not for something you’ve achieved at a different club. It’s about what you do for this club and what you bring.

“If my players do well for me I want to reward them with longer contracts that bring stability to family life, to living location and obviously, for the youngsters coming through, financial rewards.”

The Lions received Premier League and Football League approval for the unusual arrangement after Ferguson’s 93-day loan finished after last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Oldham.

The Northern Ireland international assisted both goals at Boundary Park, underlining why his current boss Neil Harris is so keen to secure his long-term signature.

Ferguson is now available for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area final clash with Oxford on Thursday and for the league games with Port Vale and Chesterfield that follow.

Harris is also open to the possibility of extending Ferguson’s loan until the summer, but hinted that it is up to the player to decide where he sees his future.

Harris explained: “Like I said before we would like to do it and do it permanently. Shane’s got the European Championships coming up and he wants time to consider his options coming out of Newcastle.

“If we could extend it to the end of the season that would be a good option for us.

“We’ve extended it for the next couple of weeks to get Shane for the next three games and we’ll try to sort a deal out in that time. It gives us more communication time with Newcastle and his agent.

“It will enable us to have a clearer picture. I’d like to keep Shane long term but there’s more than one party involved. It’s not always possible to sort it out immediately.

“When you’re trying to sort things out longer term a lot has to be right.

It has to be right for us, for Newcastle and for the player.

“The biggest thing of all is you have to consider competition from other clubs for a player of that quality.”
