Nurses appeal for kids’ toys this Christmas

Helping parents with children under five who are experiencing mental distress

SOUTH LONDON and Maudsley NHS Trust's parental mental health team is appealing for toy donations for children this Christmas.

The parental mental health team helps parents, who have children under five, who are experiencing mental distress.

The team, which is led by nurses, aims to help minimise the impact parents' mental health difficulties could have on their kids.

Adult mental health child safeguarding manager for Southwark, Lucy Brazener, said: "Christmas can be a challenging time for families, especially those who

might be on a low income.

"We know this toy appeal can make a genuine difference to families who might be struggling this year.

"Toys are not only a way for a child to have fun but they also help them with their development.

"Christmas is a brilliant time to make sure all children have toys and the fun they need."

The Trust is asking for new toys suitable for children aged up to ten years old.

FOR THE eighteenth year in a row a Walworth dad has decked his home with spectacular Christmas lights to raise money for the charity that saved his son’s life.

Regular News readers will be familiar with Gunaltay Mustafa, whose Albany Road home is decorated with more than a thousand Christmas lights throughout December to raise funds and awareness for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

Gunaltay’s son, Alex, was first

diagnosed with leukaemia at four, and after three years of treatment went into remission, but sadly at the age of eleven his cancer came back.

Alex was given a lifesaving transplant, and today – at 22 years old - he is fully recovered.

Gunaltay said: “Everyone in the area knows about ‘the Christmas Light house’ and this year we have more lights than ever before.

“We bring a bit of Christmas cheer to Southwark every year, with the intention of being able to give something little back to Anthony Nolan and to ensure more people are given the chance that Alex had.”

Anthony Nolan senior fundraiser, Lawrie Mallyon, said: “Gunaltay’s beautiful light display is lovely fundraising initiative and will not only bring joy to the neighbourhood over the festive season, but also help to raise vital awareness of Anthony Nolan’s work.

“In raising funds, and awareness, Gunaltay will help Anthony Nolan give blood cancer patients, like his son Alex, a second chance of life.”

COUNCIL TO PRODUCE REPORT ON USING SOUTHWARK PARK FOR EVENTS

THE COUNCIL is to produce a report about lessons learned from the running of the controversial Alice in Winterland event taking place in Southwark Park since November 21.

A deputation of residents told full council assembly on November 28 they felt they had been “treated terribly” over a lack of consultation surrounding the private event.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Equalities and Communities, said she apologised for mistakes in the consultation, conducted through tenants’ and residents’ associations when several estates near to the park do not have functioning TRA groups.

One resident who lives on Slippers Place, told the Assembly: “I can see into the event from my bedroom window and hear what’s going on. What I’m concerned about is the decision making process.

“It appears to have been an officer decision to sell a good chunk of Southwark Park for three months of the year, it doesn’t appear to have come to

us or any residents’ group.

“That park is my garden. I don’t have one, I live on the eighth floor of a tower block. It’s been taken away and handed over to commercial services.

“We feel we’ve been treated terribly by the council over this issue.”

The commercial winter lantern festival uses about 40 per cent of Southwark Park and is the first time a large scale event has been held in the park for a substantial period of time.

Cllr Lury said: “In an ideal world we wouldn’t have private events in [Southwark] park. But we want to deliver free events like the fireworks and the Bermondsey carnival, and so we have to look at innovative ways to bring money into the borough.

“One of the things we have agreed is that we’re going to draw up a

specification for which events are suitable for our parks.

“We are also going to do a long report looking back at the implications of those events, which we will do for Alice in Winterland.

“If it turns out that those events are appropriate for our open spaces, we won’t be looking to hold those events again in the future.”

Cllr Anood al-Samerai, leader of the opposition Lib Dems, thanked the residents for engaging with the council’s events team despite “serious errors with the process and the principle of using that land.”

Cllr Al-Samerai added she was concerned at the council’s justification of public benefits for local residents from the event, despite discounts offered by the event organisers.

The organisers have previously told the News that they had double security patrols around the park and made changes to their timings in order to allay residents’ noise and anti-social concerns.

“The key thing here is this is a familyfriendly event: people come and see the lanterns, they have a bite to eat and then they leave,” event organiser Marcus van der Gaag told the News last month.

The Winterland lantern event runs in Southwark Park until January 6.

CAMPAIGNERS HELD a nativity at Southwark Council’s headquarters on Tuesday night, asking if there is ‘room at the inn’ for refugees.

Thirty activists from Southwark and Peckham Citizens staged the nativity scene at Tooley Street asking the council to fulfil its previous commitment to resettle five families every year for five years. The first Syrian families arrived in Southwark six months ago.

The group is also pushing for more affordable housing and for Peckham residents to have a say in how the Aylesham Centre will be redeveloped.

Claire Arkwright, a community organiser for Southwark and Peckham citizens, said: 'We used a performance of the nativity scene and adapted Christmas songs to ask vital questions about when more refugees will be resettled, affordable homes will be built and how developments in Southwark will ring true to what local people want.

“We are happy that the cabinet members committed to working with us and that the council is just waiting on the Home Office and that more refugee families will be on their way, but they are behind their target so we hope that things will get moving quickly.”

Halloween shooting latest

POLICE HAVE now arrested five people after a double shooting in Crystal Palace over Halloween.

Two men were left with what police described as 'serious leg injuries' after the shooting on Lunham Road.

Police were called at 5.50pm in the evening of October 31 by paramedics after reports of a gun fired.

It is believed at the time a group of young people were filming a music video when they were approached by the suspects.

Two men, one aged 25 and another aged 24, were taken to hospital with life-changing injuries. A woman was grazed but not seriously hurt.

Five men have now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.

They range from nineteen to 23 years of age. Three have been released under investigation and two have been bailed until a date in late December.

The Met's Trident area crime command say they are 'keeping an open mind to the motive' but the attack may be gang-related.

Trevor Gravell left the family’s red wire haired Patterdale outside as he nipped inside the Walworth Road Argos on December 3 to buy a couple of Christmas presents for family and friends.

But as he came back he discovered to his despair that prize pooch Cagney – named for the famous detective duo, Cagney and Lacey - was nowhere to be seen.

Trevor’s wife, Anna, told the News: “We just thought if this was a crime, how we would solve it?

“I drove up to the Walworth Road and I managed to get my hands on some CCTV from the local shops.

“We could see this man walking up to the Elephant and Castle from the Walworth Road, but that’s all we had.”

Not to be deterred, the pair split up family and friends to scour major areas that the mystery man might have disappeared to with Cagney, whom they got from Battersea Cats and Dogs Home.

At London Bridge, Anna said she had a sudden urge to get out of the car and check the alleyways surrounding the station.

She said: “The third alley I looked down, I saw a group of men. Something caught the corner of my eye – I called her name and I knew then that it was my dog.”

Anna confronted the man, who insisted that the dog was his. But Cagney recognised her rightful owner and rushed towards Anna, leaving no doubt in her

mind.

“I took control of the lead, because that was my dog!” she said.

Now after the painstaking search to be reunited with their prize pooch, the couple, who live in Herne Hill, have thanked the shop-owners who willingly handed over their CCTV to track down Cagney. They have also warned other dog owners of the need to be vigilant after their ordeal.

“It’s a warning to other people not to leave their dogs, because other people will take them,” warned Anna. “But for us it was a happy ending – even if they were the five longest hours of my life!”

The couple decided it was a waste of police time to report the incident, and were just happy to be reunited with Cagney.

CRUISERWEIGHT RICHARD Riakporhe returned to his former school, Sacred Heart in Camberwell, this month to meet pupils and give a special boxing class.

The 28-year-old is unbeaten in eight professional bouts with seven wins via stoppage. During his visit he took his new WBA intercontinental belt with him to show students, won on November 11 in an eighth-round victory against Sam Hyde in Manchester.

Riakporhe joined sixth form students as part of Sacred Heart's wellbeing week in a special assembly . He gave a boxercise class for the whole sixth form and gave a group of particularly keen boxers the chance to be put through their paces oneon-one, saying: “I was really humbled to be able to come in and encourage and hopefully inspire the youth of Sacred Heart school. I think it’s really important that a positive agenda needs to be pushed out to young people so we can help change lives, inspire youngsters and create more champions of the future. I’ve said before on numerous occasions that I needed more positive role models when I was growing up so I feel this is my calling to do this now, as well as be successful in the sport of boxing. I want to motivate and inspire young people and affect the generations to come in positive ways.”

Multi-million pound one stop shop for apprentices opened at London South Bank University

A NEW state-of-the-art sixth form centre was officially unveiled on Thursday for Southwark students at the City of London Academy.

The new building, which was opened

by Lord Mayor Peter Estlin, will be able to accommodate up to 400 pupils.

The new facility, on the corner on Rotherhithe New Road and Verney Road currently has 325 students with plans to grow further in the coming year.

Richard Bannister, Executive Principal at City of London Academy Southwark, said: “This is a first-class learning environment for our current and future students.

“I hope their new space will motivate, inspire and encourage their learning so that they can reach their full academic potential.”

The building, a short walk from the school’s main site, features glass walls, a large open plan study centre and flexible learning spaces for staff and students.

Students were also consulted in the building design, including on the interior design features such as colour themes and classroom design.

Andrew McMurtrie, Chair of the City of London Academies Trust, said: “The sixth form centre is a fantastic area for the academy’s students to learn, excel and enjoy their experience whilst at City of London Academy Southwark.

“We are committed to providing a high-quality learning environment for our students and look forward to welcoming the next class of students to their new sixth form in 2019.”

A NEW ‘one stop shop’ for business training and apprenticeships has been opened at London South Bank University.

NEW SIXTH FORM UNVEILED FOR 2019

The Passmore Centre, which opened on November 28, aims to support “high quality” apprenticeships for local people and businesses.

The centre’s launch ceremony, hosted

by LSBU, was attended by Southwark councillors including council leader Peter John and local employers.

The centre has received £5million funding from Southwark Council, an additional £12million combined funding support from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and 4million from London South Bank University.

Cllr Kieron Williams, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Innovation at Southwark Council, said: “The five million we’ve put into the Centre is an investment in the people of our borough and a boost for our local economy too.

“It will deliver hundreds of new apprenticeship opportunities, providing our residents with more ways to find great jobs and creating the skilled workers local businesses need.”

The centre has been made by refurbishing the Victorian Passmore Edwards library and has the additional benefit of removing the library from the

MAYOR SADIQ Khan approved Delancey’s regeneration plans for Elephant and Castle this week as protestors vowed to fight on.

In a statement sent to the News on Monday, a City Hall spokesperson said: “This development will include nearly 1,000 new homes for rent – of which 35 per cent will be at social rent or other genuinely affordable levels – as well as community space, leisure facilities, offices, an enhanced college campus, and improvements to the nearby Underground station.

“By working with the developer and the council, City Hall have secured an unprecedented level of support for traders affected, with their rents now capped below market rates for 15 years, and have got the level of rents in the affordable homes down even further.

powers available to their fullest extent to make sure these plans represent a good deal for the local area, and having considered all the evidence available, have decided to approve this application.”

The decision comes after the Up the Elephant campaign held a fundraiser with more than 250 supporters including four Southwark councillors, and housing chief Stephanie Cryan.

At the time of going to press, activists planned to turn out in force at Tooley Street for the council’s planning committee meeting, where a decision was due on Delancey’s Castle Square planning application for a temporary home for traders displaced from the condemned shopping centre.

Bar staff could down pots in strike action EXCLUSIVE

ANTIC PUB workers are threatening action after being told they will not get any extra pay for working throughout the Christmas bank holidays.

More than 100 Antic staff, a chain which includes the Gregorian in Bermondsey, East Dulwich Tavern, and John the Unicorn in Peckham, are petitioning to be paid double time rather than minimum wage on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Up the Elephant says 500 square metres and space for 33 traders is inadequate, and if this application is rejected the entire regeneration scheme could be taken back to the drawing board.

Although Delancey has increased the number of homes at social rent, the number still falls below current targets at just 116 out of 979 overall.

Jerry Flynn from Elephant Amenity Network, told the News before the decision was announced: “The local community has already gained more social housing from the redevelopment and a better deal for traders – but it is not enough.

“We must continue the united campaign of local people, councillors, students and traders to secure the homes and local businesses the Elephant desperately needs.”

MORE THAN 100 traders turned out at an emergency meeting to discuss plans to close Rye Lane for over a year from January 2019.

At a meeting held on Thursday, December 6, gas company SGN heard from affected traders who are petitioning for more help and compensation for loss of business during the major works.

In September the News reported that SGN was applying to the council to start work in January, but no timeframes or the extent of the disruption was given.

The company has now confirmed it will begin upgrading the network in Rye Lane from January 7, as part of a £1 million investment to replace old mains with new plastic piping.

Each of the six phases of work will involve temporarily closing a section of Rye Lane to traffic, but pedestrians will not be affected and an exception will be made for delivery vehicles.

But with work expected to last at least thirteen months and full details only just published, many traders are worried about being left out of pocket at short notice – especially as they will currently only be able to claim compensation when the work is finished.

Eileen Conn from Peckham Vision, a Rye Lane Traders’ Association member and co-organiser of the meeting, said: "Over 100 Rye Lane traders attended the very lively Rye Lane Traders Association (RLTA) meeting.

“They voiced their shock and distress at the short notice about the gas works and no proper help organised to compensate them for the disruption to their business.”

Southwark Council has arranged an urgent meeting with SGN for early next week to raise the businesses’ concerns.

A spokesperson for SGN told the News it had spent many months planning the work to minimise disruption as much as possible. “This is a complex engineering project, which will ensure Peckham homes and businesses continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come “We appreciate that our essential work will cause disruption to local businesses and we're committed to doing all we can to support Rye Lane traders.

“Following on from our drop-in session at the start of November, we're continuing to engage with local businesses to explain more about our work and discuss compensation available to small businesses based on individual circumstances.

“We’ll continue to liaise with all stakeholders over the coming months to help minimise the disruption caused by our essential work in Rye Lane.”

In a statement sent to the News, a spokesperson for the Unite union workers said the business’s ‘rapid expansion’ came at the expense of its staff.

But Antic boss Anthony Thomas, disputed some of the claims, telling the paper that only the East Dulwich Tavern would be open on Christmas day for ‘a few hours’, and workers would be paid time and a half on New Year’s eve.

“The nature of our industry is that we work when our patrons do not, and this includes weekends, late nights and bank holidays, so it is difficult to sustainably treat any of these days differently from each other,” he said.

“It is part and parcel of the business that we are in.”

Appeal after ‘assault at tube’

A MEMBER of staff at Bermondsey tube station was assaulted last week while challenging a group of men for suspected fare dodging, say transport police.

OFFICERS WANT to speak to this man to help them investigate a touching incident on a Northern line tube travelling from London Bridge.

Detectives from British Transport Police’s Sexual Offences Unit released the picture on Wednesday (December 5) and asked for anyone who recognises the man to get in touch.

An investigation was launched after police said a woman noticed a man staring at her body while touching himself inappropriately on October 30. Officers said it happened on a train that was travelling between London Bridge and King’s Cross at around midday.

Transport police said they believed the male pictured may have information which could help them investigate. If you know who he is, then contact BTP by sending a text to 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 159 of 01/11/2018. Alternatively, ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

British Transport Police have released CCTV images of a man they believe could help their investigation, after a train passenger was hospitalised with an eight-centimetre slash to the face.

Officers were called to Queen's Road Peckham station at 8pm on Saturday, December 8, after a man slashed another male passenger's face in a disagreement on a train travelling from London Bridge to Caterham.

The victim was taken to hospital for

treatment and has since been discharged, but British Transport Police and armed officers did not find the suspect.

Detectives say the man in the CCTV images may have information that could help their investigation.

They are also appealing for anyone on the train or at the station who saw what happened to get in touch with British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 and quoting reference 602 of 8 December.

The London Underground staff member is believed to have confronted a group of four men whom he believed were not paying for their journey on Tuesday afternoon (December 4).

One of the men is then thought to have turned on the underground worker, assaulting him.

Police were called at 4.47pm on Tuesday December 4, to deal with the attack on the staff member.

Separately, while dealing with the assault, British Transport Police were told a woman had collapsed on the tube platform at around 5.25pm.

Kind-hearted bystanders had been looking after her before the police arrived and paramedics were called.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told the News it was called at 5.21pm to reports of the collapsed woman. The spokesperson said: “We treated a person at the scene and took them to hospital.”

TWO MEN HAVE been arrested after a stop-and-search in Peckham led to a ‘cannabis factory’ raid.

Plainclothes officers stopped and searched a man on Bellenden Road at around 11pm on Wednesday November 28 discovering cannabis and a “large amount” of cash on him.

The male was arrested for possession with intent to supply.

They then attended his home address, and uncovered what they described as a cannabis factory.

It is not clear if the factory was on Bellenden Road.

Officers said they arrested another man at the scene of the property for cultivation of cannabis.

Detectives also described discovering a “frankly horrifying” homemade weapon from the alleged cannabis factory.

The weapon appears to be a long bladed knife that could be carried on the shoulder.

A Southwark MPS officer told the News: “The officers in question worked through the night to secure evidence after having already completed a late turn shift.”

A CIRCUS performer with diabetes has thanked the team at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital who have helped her manage her condition.

Ruby Wain, 24, a performer specialising in aerial ropes, silk, hoops and fire, is taking part in the COMBAT Type-1 trial, which aims to find out if a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis could help people recently diagnosed with type-one diabetes.

Ruby, who was diagnosed last year after falling ill while working in Gran Canaria, said: “People with diabetes are just normal people, and we can do everything anyone else can.

“But you have to plan ahead a lot, and it takes extra effort, all day, every day. It can feel very relentless.”

Around 400,000 people in the UK have Type-One diabetes, a form of diabetes where the immune system attacks cells producing insulin.

It means the cirus perfomer has to keep her blood glucose levels within safe limits, by checking them regularly and injecting insulin when required.

Being on the trial has given her an extra layer of support to manage the condition she said.

“I see someone every three months and have a chance to ask questions. I’m giving my time, so it feels like the team are happy to give their time and help me with managing my diabetes,” she said.

The small trial involving thirteen patients is seeing if the drug Abatacept helps people with type 1 diabetes extend the period when their body is still producing some insulin.

Dr Sam Jerram, a Specialist Registrar in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy’s and St Thomas’, is running the trial.

“Just after people develop type 1 diabetes, there’s often a period where the pancreas is still producing some insulin, and that makes it easier to control blood sugar levels,” said Dr Jerram.

“We’re trying to see if Abatacept prolongs this period because we know that if patients are able to control their sugar levels better, they are less likely to have complications down the line.”

He added: “Ruby has a really physically demanding job and so it’s especially important for her to be looking after herself and managing her diabetes well.”

Matthew Missenden, aged 56, from Hazel Grove, SE26, was convicted after a week-long trial at Woolwich Crown Court and sentenced on Wednesday, December 5.

He had been charged on June 20 with one count of attempted armed robbery after police were called on May 14 to a supermarket in Deptford High Street.

A G4S guardian was delivering a cashbox when he was approached by Missenden, who was armed with a hammer. When it was revealed to be empty, Missenden fled the scene but was picked up by the Met's flying squad after they identified him and his getaway

vehicle on CCTV. At the time of the attempted robbery, Missenden was on life licence since being released from custody in 2016, having served a sentence for a string of robberies at gunpoint.

Detective Constable David Crewe from the Met’s Flying Squad said: “Missenden is a prolific offender who has no respect for the law or the criminal justice system.

"At the time of this offence he was on licence having been released from a custodial sentence he received for similar offences.

“Missenden showed no concern for the welfare of the custodian merely carrying out his day job, or other members of the public around him, when he attempted this robbery armed with a weapon.

“This case should send a clear message to those considering carrying out these audacious crimes that we will track you down and bring you to justice.”

The diabetes sensor made famous by Theresa May will be free in Southwark in 2019

SOUTHWARK DIABETICS are to be prescribed a revolutionary monitor that was at the centre of a ‘postcode lottery’ row when seen being used by Prime Minister Theresa May. Type-one diabetics in the borough will have access to the life-changing Flash glucose monitoring system from January on the NHS. In other parts of the country type-one diabetics have to pay for the revolutionary treatment.

Traditional methods of monitoring glucose levels involve a painful finger prick test continuously throughout the day.

Meanwhile the FreeStyle Libre flash monitor is worn on the skin and can give a constant reading of blood sugar levels.

The monitor is hoped to help diabetics avoid the severe complications that can be caused by the condition including amputations, blindness and stroke.

Southwark’s Clinical Commissioning Group said it would prescribe the treatment for those with type one diabetes who need to inject insulin multiple times a day; aren't able to use conventional monitoring methods; or have disabling low levels of blood sugar.

Roz Rosenblatt, Head of London at Diabetes UK, welcomed the move, which comes after a campaign launched by the charity for the treatment to be available to all who need it on the NHS. “It’s really good news that many people in Southwark will be able to get Flash free of charge on prescription,” Ms Rosenblatt told the News. “This sadly isn’t the case for everyone living with diabetes across London.

“We believe everyone with diabetes should have access to the right technology to support them, not just those who can afford it.”

At the moment only two-thirds of London’s NHS CCGs have agreed to fund the life-changing tech.

The recommendation is expected to cost Southwark’s CCG around £120,000 a year.

The device is used by Prime Minister Theresa May but sparked accusations of a postcode lottery when a British Medical Journal investigation revealed only 2 per cent of English patients were getting it prescribed by their GP. Clinical Commissioning Groups in Bromley, Bexley, Greenwich, Lambeth and Lewisham have also agreed to start funding the revolutionary tech in partnership with Southwark.

HE PRIME Minister has been forced to admit her proposals would not have passed Parliament this week.

The Government was facing a massive defeat as even Tory former Ministers were admitting May’s deal was bad for Britain. In 2016 May was still Home Secretary when she stated that leaving the EU would damage the UK economy and undermine our national security. She was right then and is wrong to continue pushing an agenda that risks so much for our country.

May’s climb down was inevitable as the Brexit deception collides with reality, but it is an admission the Government has completely lost control and is in chaos, ignoring other huge concerns in Southwark and beyond.

LEASEHOLDERS’ PROBLEMS ARE NOT NEW THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER SYSTEM THAN JUST BEING HIT WITH A MASSIVE BILL TO PAY

HE PROBLEM for the leaseholders on Bermondsey’s Lucey Way Estate are not new and are made worse by a lack of communication, especially in the run up to Christmas.

Leaseholders have said that they have already paid out up to £40,000 over a four year period for major works and now that there are clear signs of emergency work, with cracks on the estate’s balconies, they fear they could be charged again.

The council has not said whether they will be landed with a section 20 and a big bill - only that they will be in touch and that ‘any charges or billing to residents will also be thoroughly considered’.

Surely even at this stage, with the problems visible for all to see, they must know whether this was work previously carried out or new work? To be hit with a big bill like this is very hard, and if you were dealing with an individual house you’d know right away.

Having to pay for the works towards either the block or the entire estate makes the sums bigger than it would be if you were paying for your own work. And inevitably it could cause a little bit of resentment for council leaseholders towards council tenants. Tenants don’t have to pay these big one-off major works fees, but they would benefit from some of the works on the estate.

The leaseholder/freeholder dynamic makes it hard for leaseholders to organise their own work which they think would be better. So they essentially have to deal with it when the big bills land like these ones. Although Southwark offers an interest-free loan to cover big bills, there is a clause that says those in receipt cannot mount a legal challenge against the fee.

The costs for challenging a leaseholder bill can be ruinous too. A Brandon Estate woman who was billed £40,000 in 2013 for major works tried to challenge the council in court, but ultimately ended up with a whopping legal bill on top when she wasn’t successful.

A solution might be introduction of commonhold. The Law Commission backed it this week. It would give you the right to own a freehold flat but also be part of a company which manages the structure and common rooms of the property. It has some significant benefits over leaseholds, including no lease to run out; there’s no ground rent; no risk of forfeiture, so the freeholder can’t just take back property if you break the lease. Perhaps this is the way forward for long-suffering leaseholders?

A GROUP of Bermondsey leaseholders fear having to ‘double pay’ for emergency works on their estate, despite allegedly having already shelled out up to £40,000 each for major works.

Major works including new windows, railings and concrete took place on Lucey Way over 2016-17, hitting leaseholders with a hefty bill ranging from £29,000 to £40,000 each.

Now emergency works are being carried out to repair falling chunks of concrete from the estate’s railings and balconies eighteen months after leaseholders say they were installed and they paid the whopping bills to Southwark Council. The leaseholders are now worried they will have to pay again.

A group of eight leaseholders told the News that they expect they will be served a Section 20 notice for the emergency works, but this has not been confirmed by the council.

The notice is a consultation that the council must serve for costs over £250.

Leaseholders are required to pay towards costs calculated depending on work carried out and type of accommodation.

Southwark Council told the News it would be in contact with residents to “explain the current situation” and “any charges or billing to residents will also be thoroughly considered.”

It has previously said that if leaseholders did not pay the sums towards major works it would be forced to make up the shortfall by increasing rents on council tenants.

One Lucey Way leaseholder, Chris, who has been on the estate for 36 years and a leaseholder for the past twenty-eight, said the costs she had already paid have ruined her retirement plans.

She said: “In the end [the bill] it came to £42,000. I don’t know how they came up with that figure. I’ve paid more in major works than I even paid for the property in the first place.

“All of our long-term [retirement] plans have gone out the window.”

Leaseholders on Lucey Way, which forms part of the Lucey Way Estate, allege that the emergency works are fixing problems left over from the major works project.

But at a meeting on November 21, leaseholders said they were told the emergency works were a new project, leaving open the prospect of further charges.

works - for comment but did not receive a reply before publication.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing management and modernisation, said: “Residents can be reassured that the council is looking into all aspects of the works to the Lucey Way estate and that any charges or billing to residents will also be thoroughly considered.

“We will be in close communication with residents in order to explain the current situation.”

Hamish McCallum, housing spokesperson for the opposition Lib Dems, said: “I’ve seen similar cases in my area of North Bermondsey, particularly in Four Squares and at Two Towers.

“What often happens is the Labour

council decides on its own what it thinks needs doing, without any real consultation or engagement with residents.

“It then lands a massive bill on the leaseholders for works that they either didn’t want or don’t think is necessary, and without trying to look for alternatives.”

It is not the first time local authority leasehold agreements have hit the headlines in Southwark.

Last year, the News reported leaseholders on the St Saviour’s Estate in Bermondsey successfully challenged the council after receiving bills of £17,000 for major work on their estate.

A band of 88 leaseholders banded together to take the council to a tribunal, which reduced the fees for the works to £8,000. See comment - page 14

Bermondsey-based artist Georgina Hodges is backing the campaign and has made art out of sanitary products to raise awareness and help end the stigma of menstruation (pictured).

She told the News: “The fact that girls are having to use their socks in replacement of sanitary products or take days off of school because they cannot

afford sanitary products emphasises the urgency of tackling this issue and making sanitary products more accessible especially for young girls. There is certainly a stigma surrounding periods, even in a girls school, many girls want to hide that they are on their period.”

Southwark Council’s Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for community safety and public health, said: “Southwark Council works with a number of charities that tackle this issue in our schools where the

The ‘People Not Poverty’ group hope to gain 1,500 petition signatures by February.

Magical match girl for Brendan

An Old Vic Christmas Carol

AS A true child of the 90s, my main reference point for A Christmas Carol was handed to me in the form of The Muppets.

hristmas is fast approaching, so you may be on the lookout for some festive entertainment. Striking 12, a musical directed by Oliver Kaderbhai, and taking its inspiration from ‘The Little Match Girl' has the necessary elements to transport you to a magical winter land, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

As New Year’s Eve nears, Brendan, played by Declan Bennett, is burnt out, overworked, newly single and in pantomime mood, yo-yoing between, ‘should he’ or ‘shouldn’t he’ go to the party. With his intensely overwrought, yet cheerful performance, reminiscent of Jack Lemmon’s style of acting, combined with powerfully raw singing and guitar playing, we feel Brendan's pain. Many could be reminded of a New Year’s Eve they would rather have kicked into orbit.

Taking Hans Christian Andersen’s, little barefoot urchin, adding her 21st century counterpart via the struggling lightbulb seller, and audiences are confronted with timeless issues: those less fortunate, those living on the street, those trying to earn money to survive harsh winter weather. Teamed with Brendan singing lines such as “It’s not alright they leave her there to die” and our heart strings are well and truly tugged.

Now, if that sounds more humbug than hootenanny, have faith, because Striking 12 achieves balance through its sheer

musicality. The cast of six accomplished actor/musicians work in harmony to drive the story forward, singing, acting, narrating and rearranging props like a deftly completed Rubik cube. Songs are stitched together seamlessly, keeping us enthralled with the story line throughout the journey.

Contrasting the bleak winter theme with the light of candles, light bulbs, matches, stars and up-lit characters

reassures us that good may just be restored. The Match Girl, played by Bronté Barbé, adds to our relief as we hear her singing the line, “I feel my spirits rise". Barbé’s, emotionally charged, versatile voice forces us to hear and feel her dilemma so we root for her survival.

A packed, well-crafted musical that provides a very good night’s entertainment.

Five daughters and a wedding

TRADITION! WHAT is it and what does it mean, they all ask in the opening song. ‘I don’t know,’ answered Tevye, the dairyman and star of this rather uplifting in a downbeat way - production of Fiddler On The Roof writes Michael Holland.

In a small Russian village the Jewish community are trying to carry on in their old ways as best they can, even though word is on the wind about racial unrest in the towns. Part of their traditional life is asking someone in the sky for horses, husbands and riches, as well as bring bad luck to those they do not like.

One scary villager is Yente, the traditional matchmaker, who pairs up old men with young girls for money, so when Tevye’s five daughters see her coming with her black book of names it spreads panic, because these were changing times and the girls did not want to stay stuck in a tradition that was going to leave them unhappily married.

A stranger appears in their midst, Perchik, who tells the men to stop calling down curses from above that don’t work but to do something practical - prepare for the pogrom he knows is coming. Perchik’s big city

ideas has him quickly deemed a ‘Radical’. Tevye, however, allows him to tutor his daughters in exchange for food.

In time Yente pairs one daughter off with the old butcher but when the girl says she loves a poor young tailor Tevye sees how much happier they will be, so gives his blessing to the wedding. When another daughter falls in love with Perchik and follows him to Siberia, he is not so happy. When the next in line is enamoured with a gentile he is

absolutely livid and forbids the union, but that didn’t go well. ‘Love is the new style,’ says the father as his traditions slowly get eaten away.

Fiddler On The Roof is about traditions and how they change with time and circumstance. Director Trevor Nunn draws every nuance of perceived Jewishness out of his cast with black humour used to get through the eternal hardships: ‘So happy they don’t know how miserable they are’. Song and dance appears to be how the village

survives, even when the bully boys start their intimidation during wedding celebrations. But, over a century on from when the play was set, and 60 years since the play premiered, we laugh while knowing anti-semitism has been hard for Jews, and is again on the rise. Plus, arranged marriages is still a problem over many cultures. Nunn, however, ensures this is not one big happy wedding party so sends the audience home content, but with a lot to think about.

Andy Nyman is fantastic as Tevye; the whole cast are wonderful; the singing is a joy, the choreography is a miracle for what is performed in this small space. Yes, there is not much to smile about in the story, but there is much to be pleased with after seeing this great production.

For a long time I thought that was all I needed as far as this story goes but it turns out, perhaps less surprisingly to most, that I was wrong and there is a whole lot more this tale has to offer, writes Rosie o’Connell.

Muppets aside, A Christmas Carol is one of those tales as old as time, regurgitated every Christmas in one way or another that can make it seem a bit ‘done’. The Old Vic’s offering of the magical Jack Thorne’s adaptation is anything but that, bringing a new lease of life to the text and old Ebenezer alike.

Stephen Tompkinson’s miserly curmudgeon, Scrooge, is more grumpy than evil but it works. This Scrooge has a sense of self-awareness to him that almost makes you pity him as he lurks about the stage with his scruffy hair and tattered clothes. You are really rooting for his transformation from economical to extravagant along his ghostly journey through past, present and future. The performance presents a complex look at cold-heartedness that neither belittles Scrooge’s past nor scrimps on the festivities of the ending.

The piece as a whole feels very Dickensian, from the top-hatted and tail-coated cast handing out mince pies and oranges upon entering, to the amber glow of lanterns adorning the set. The hand-bells played by the cast, pealing out ethereal versions of carols throughout the show were a real treat, paradoxically conjuring a Gothic atmosphere as well as a festive one.

After the spectral decadence of the first act, parachuting Brussels sprouts, ziplining turkey and a snow cannon see you through the infectiously joyous second half, resulting in a pantomime of pandemonium.

If the message of ‘A Christmas Carol’ is ‘God bless us, every one’ then Thorne’s adaptation (and, for this performance Luka Petrovic’s Tiny Tim) certainly delivers on it. Moving and atmospheric, this is one that is likely to thaw even the biggest Scrooge out there this Christmas. The weather outside was truly frightful the evening I saw this and yet my mum and I left the theatre with smiles on our faces, carols in our ears and full of Christmas cheer.

Three brave bobbies replace the Invisible Man for a Blue Plaque

LAST WEEK while researching one of this year’s blue plaque nominees, Hollywood Actor Claude Rains, the News made the discovery that despite being described by many sources as being born in Camberwell – including in two biographies and his own interviews – Rains’ birth certificate actually lists his birth place as Clapham.

Although we are very sorry to have had to disqualify the Invisible Man and Casablanca actor from the running, we were able to give his place to another very deserving nomination.

Southwark historian Stephen Bourne has nominated the following police officers in a ‘group’ or ‘joint’ nomination for a 2018 Southwark Blue Plaque.

Inspector Frederick Wright PC Robert Melton PC Jesse Christmas The nomination is for their extraordinary bravery in the First World War saving women and children during the 1917 zeppelin attack on the corner of Calmington Road and Albany Road, then in the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell.

During the night of October 19 – 20, 1917, a German zeppelin dropped a 300-pound ordnance, known as an ‘aerial torpedo’, onto two adjoining houses on the corner of Calmington Road and Albany Road.

Twelve people, including two children, were killed in the explosion, while at least another eighteen were left trapped in the basement of a building with a fire raging above.

Despite the threat of another explosion due to a gas leak, Inspector Frederick Wright, PC Jesse Christmas and PC Robert Melton - who was off duty at home just a few houses down from the blast - raced to the scene.

The brave Camberwell bobbies cut a hole in the floor and dropped down into the basement, where they managed to find two children in the smoke and chaos.

Ignoring the threat of the building collapsing and the near-overpowering gas fumes, they led the children and a group of shell-shocked adults to safety.

Inspector Wright collapsed, received medical care, went home, and then returned to his rescue efforts later on in the night.

An eye-witness spoke of “the great bravery” of the three police officers in a letter to a local paper that week.

He said: “I can assert that their

conduct was exemplary, deserving the highest possible praise and public gratitude.”

Inspector Frederick Wright was awarded the Albert Medal for his bravery, while the two Police Constables were decorated with the King’s Police Medals.

However, the officers are not mentioned in the memorial in nearby Chumleigh Gardens to the Camberwell residents who lost their lives in World War One. A Southwark Blue Plaque will be a permanent memorial which pays tribute to the three selfless and brave policemen who put themselves in

One of them, PC Robert Melton, from Albany Road, was sacked for taking part in the 1919 police strike which attempted to improve the pay and conditions of police officers.

He died on July 1, in 1934 from heart failure at the age of 53.

At the time of his death he was living at 182 Westmoreland Road, in Walworth, at what had been Newington Workhouse until 1930.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works

by Instalcom, it intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Omeara Street, between Southwark Street and Union Street.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be via Southwark Street, Southwark Bridge Road, Union Street, Borough High Street (Slip Road) as applicable.

The works will take place on the 7th – 11th January 2019.

by Virgin Media, it intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from waiting and loading at any time in part of Grove Park.

Whilst the restriction is in place, and whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to wait, including waiting for the purpose of loading and unloading at any time in Grove Park, between Linwood Close to No’s 36 on the eastern kerb line and No’s 22 on the western kerb line.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, insofar as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

by Thames Water, it intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from waiting and loading at any time in part of Woods Road.

The London Borough of Southwark (Prescribed Route) (Morecambe Street) Experimental Traffic Order 2018

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, insofar as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

2. The effect of the experimental order will be to prohibit all vehicles, except pedal cycles, from entering into or proceeding in any part of MORECAMBE STREET, which lies south-west of the south-western kerb-line of Townley Street and the north-eastern kerb-line of East Street. This experimental measure will be effective between the hours of 8am – 10am and 2pm – 4pm on Mondays to Fridays during the school-term (the dates of which will be determined by the staff of Robert Browning Primary School); and will be physically enforced with traffic signs and the installation of two movable barriers located in Morecambe Street, between its junction with Townley Street and its junction with East Street.

Whilst the restriction is in place, and whilst the authorised traffic signs/road markings are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to wait, including waiting for the purpose of loading and unloading at any time in Woods Road, on the western kerb line, between No’s 24 – No’s 32.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will come into force between the 7th – 9th January 2019.

Notice of consultation on the re-designation of the South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours Neighbourhood Forum

Neighbourhood planning was introduced under the Localism Act 2011 to give members of the community a more hands on role in the planning of their neighbourhoods. It is a process that is led by the community and supported by the Council.

Southwark Council is consulting jointly with the London Borough of Lambeth on the re-designation of the South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours (SoWN) Neighbourhood Forum.

The forum consists of local residents, elected members representing the local area, as well as anybody who works there. Once designated, the forum will have the power to produce neighborhood plan which offers statutory planning guidance in making planning decision on planning applications within the designated neighbourhood area. SoWN has already produced a draft Neighbourhood Plan which is currently under separate consultation.

Southwark Council, in accordance with the Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations 2012 as amended, is consulting the general public on the re-designation of the South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours Neighbourhood Forum.

Consultation will take place for a period of 7 weeks, between Thursday 20 December 2018 to Thursday 7 February 2019.

DULWICH HAMLET dominated for long spells against Hemel Hempstead last weekend, but lost their fourth successive National League South game.

A YOUNG Millwall Lionesses side produced a spirited performance but lost 2-0 in the Women’s Continental Cup to Lewes last week.

Chris Phillips’ side had an early chance when Freya Bailes crossed but Lia Cataldo couldn’t apply a finish.

Michelle Young was just off target from distance before Evie Clarke headed over the bar from a corner.

Annie Rossiter then had the ball in the net but the offside flag was up and it was scoreless at the break.

The Lionesses continued to dominate but it was Lewes who went ahead against the run of play in the 67th minute as Rebecca Carter headed home.

Leanne Cowan was next to go close in the 74th minute but her effort went wide.

And four minutes later Lewes sealed the win when Samantha Quayle shot past Chloe Sansom.

Hamlet had their chances, starting in the ninth minute when Iffy Allen was brought down outside the area but Ashley Carew couldn’t produce anything from the free-kick.

Sanchez Ming and Nathan Green threatened from deep in the wide positions and in the 21st minute the latter crossed from the left but Ming couldn’t provide the finish.

Gavin Rose’s side were controlling the game and Nyren Clunis saw a drive tipped over six minutes before the break.

The game’s defining moment came just before the half-time whistle. Carew lost possession in midfield before Dominic Vose prevented the hosts getting through as he fouled. Jordan Parkes stepped up to hit a vicious freekick beyond Preston Edwards and into the top corner.

Nathan Ferguson came on for Carew for the second half and Hamlet again dominated but couldn’t force a breakthrough.

Gavin Tomlin saw his shot from distance saved and from the corner Green’s header was cleared off the line.

Vose’s cross was then tipped over by goalkeeper Laurie Walker.

Hemel were stubborn opponents as they disrupted the visitors’ rhythm.

Rose’s side didn’t have the attacking nous to break through as they tried to avoid another loss in a difficult period.

PECKHAM RYE recorded a whopping 20-0 win over AFC Sporting Greenwich last weekend.

The Rye continued to pile the pressure on league leaders AFC Kingfisher with a victory against a side they had already beaten 13-0 this season and that has now conceded an incredible 90 goals in ten league games.

Peckham were so dominant that even their goalkeeper got in on the scoring act.

Peckham were 3-0 up within ten minutes through goals from Tarique Jules, the skipper Owen Rochester, who converted from the penalty spot, and an unlikely source in Mick Holman, the stopper, who managed to loop one in from 80 yards. The condition of the pitch helped and, needless to say, it was Holman’s first goal of the season.

Duke Binitie came on to give his

side fresh legs – and seven more goals, taking his tally to over 30 for the season.

Jules added another four for the hosts, Danny Warne got his name on the score sheet with two goals, to improve his convincing record from defence. Kennan Rochester and Craig Parsons also contributed with a goal each.

And, to complete the long list of goal scorers, Greenwich contributed by putting through their own net, to take the score line to 20.

Misery for the visitors but an excellent week for Peckham who sit just eight points off first place with two games in hand.

Peckham took time to thank Greenwich and wish them the best of luck for the rest of the season.

PECKHAM TOWN put in a strong performance to secure a comfortable 3-0 home win over the league leaders Staplehurst, as persistent rain made conditions difficult at the Menace Arena last weekend, writes Duncan Hart...

Town were pleased to welcome back talented midfielder Ali Amisu to the starting line-up for his start for over a month following his recovery from injury. Peckham started the game quickly and had the visitors on the back foot early, but the Monarchs produced one or two close opportunities for themselves.

It was the returning goal-scoring midfielder Amisu who was central to the Menace opening the scoring early on. Amisu was dragged down inside the box, and he stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick. The Staplehurst keeper managed to make the save, but failed to hold on, and Herve Mbongue was on hand to turn the ball home.

The Menace scored two quick goals to secure the three points later in the

first half. Klajdi Cani has been in red hot form for the Menace since arriving from Billericay Town in the middle of October, so it was of no surprise when the in-form striker got his name on the scoreboard. Town won a free-kick 35 yards from a goal, and the resulting shot from Cani left the visiting custodian stranded, and in turn stretched Cani’s personal tally to thirteen goals in seven appearances.

A third goal swiftly arrived following a passage of one-touch football. Cani received the ball in the middle of the park and turned provider as he moved possession forward to the advancing Nicky Meta down the left-hand side of the pitch.

Meta managed to move the ball inside the full-back and slot home at the near post from ten yards out – his fifth goal in three games.

The second half saw no further goals, as Town were forced to switch from 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2, due to Adrian Butler aggravating his groin and being replaced by tricky winger Kevin Dance.

Head coach Mary Phillip explained: “The manager decided to make a

change to our formation and starting line-up. It paid off, and I was pleased how the team followed the game plan from start to finish. Despite the opposition being a good side, I was always comfortable that we would get the result."

Peckham are on the road for the next two games, as they travel to Margate Sports in the last sixteen of the League Cup on December 15 and then face Otford United on the last Saturday before Christmas.

Town fans don’t need to be starved of football at home, though, as the women’s team take on Comet’s LFC at the Menace Area on Sunday, December 16 at 2pm. It’s free entry and the bar will be open as usual.

Midfielder: ‘There’s something special in the air’ EXCLUSIVE

IF FISHER end up being unlikely league winners this season then Robert Brown will have a big promise to keep.

It was surely made in jest, after Fisher had been promoted to the SCEFL Premier Division just twelve months after relegation.

But, after nineteen games of this campaign, Dean Harrison’s side sit top, and to put that performance in perspective K Sports, who finished twelve points ahead of them last season, are thirteenth, and Punjab United, fourteen points better off as they won the title, are seventeenth.

There is a long, long way to go, but if they continue to defy the expectations and the – shortening but still long – odds, a celebratory trip to Belgium awaits them.

That was where Brown started his football career, owing to his dad Peter’s job with Coca-Cola, which also brought the Kingston upon Thames family to Norway, South Africa and Canada.

Brown’s time in Belgium bore immediate returns in developing his technical ability, and one benefit that would be obviously gainful after the Brexit referendum in 2016 – he could get a Belgian passport.

After a football scholarship in New Hampshire where he studied for an MBA, the account executive returned to London, and is now a prolific goal scorer from midfield for Fisher, his double in the 2-1 win over Chatham last Saturday preserving a one-point buffer over Beckenham.

Fisher already have twelve more points than they amassed over the whole of the 2016-17 relegation season.

It’s a level of performance that has been unexpected for many, though not everyone.

“I’m not surprised we’re staying here at the peak now. We have a really good dressing room and there aren't any egos in here. You see that throughout the pitch. We play for each other, the staff and the fans,” Brown told the News this week.

“I’ve played on many football teams in my life ranging from the youth setup in Belgium to a football scholarship in America for college, but there is something special in the air here around Fisher, I can't explain it and I haven't experienced it before.

I genuinely feel like we can beat any team we play.

“I’m enjoying my football more than ever, I think my defensive play has improved drastically since moving to England playing against men. The gaffer and [assistant] Neil [Hunter] get on me about it each game and you can't hide at this level, every tackle and every header - you see every Fisher player fighting like there life depends on it, and if they don't, they don't last long here. We have our squad and our core, we've got the players to do something special now.”

Brown has brought his brand of technical football to the Fish’s midfield.

“I enjoy quick football, that's how I was taught at a young age,” he explains. “In Belgium, everything is one or two touch from the back to top.

I played for a club called Tempo Overisje in League 2. The level was good playing top teams like Anderlecht where [Romelu] Lukaku played, Brugge, Gent, Liege, Tubize, who [Eden] Hazard played for.

“What I’ve learnt since coming to England and what gaffer has put into my head now is playing that way in certain areas. I think I am a more complete player now, you'll often see quick link-up play in our final third of attack. However, we are very

It’s the first time this new Fisher, reformed in 2009, have been top of a league table, somewhere they shouldn’t really be given they are competing against clubs with far greater financial resources.

But that’s no excuse for Harrison and his staff as they seek every advantage.

“The management staff are very

thorough,” Brown says. “The gaffer is a perfectionist down to who is marking who for corners and how we play, and it works. Neil will pick the bones out of things for each player and what he expects from them, while [coaches] Rich [White] and Charlie [Pearce] will run very specific pieces of training for our style of play so we know what we are doing week in, week out.

“It goes down to everyone knowing their part, even Donna [Powell] the physio plays a massive role in our

success as she acts like a mother to all 20 of us.”

Brown dedicated his goals last weekend to club secretary Jason Birchill and his son Harry. Jason suffered a heart attack during a game against K Sports. “One goal is for his speedy recovery, and the other goal is for Harry who knows his footballing family is here for him and behind his dad,” Brown says.

They are all in it together, enjoying their journey and seeing where it takes them.

“Everyone mentions our budget and how other teams are throwing thousands of pounds per week around at players,” Brown says. “It’s very simple to me. The players here genuinely look forward to seeing each other during the week, whether we were on ten pounds a week or 300 pounds a week. We don’t play for the money, we play because of exactly this feeling - the feeling of surprising everyone while we continue to stay at the top.”

“Same old faces, same old story, it’s like Groundhog Day,” he sighed.

That weariness and frustration was obvious and understandable, after Millwall have seemed to turn so many corners this season only to run into another lamppost.

In the movie Bill Murray’s character Phil Connors relives the same day over and over, the radio clock waking him at 6am playing “I Got You Babe”, the same events exactly repeating.

He gets more desperate trying to break the loop, engaging in more reckless acts that edges him towards insanity.

Millwall aren’t quite at that point yet, though on Saturday it felt like we’d been here before many times.

To take one statistic, in the last seven league games at The Den Millwall have fallen behind in six of them and, to update our tally, it’s now twelve points dropped at home this season. For what it’s worth, that dozen would have Millwall in ninth place, above Birmingham and just five points off the play-offs.

What would have annoyed Harris was that Hull didn’t exactly do anything special to deny Millwall a first win in six games. There was no genius tactical adjustment, no brilliant cameo off the bench. Nigel Adkins took off Daniel Batty, a defensive midfielder, and sent on striker Chris Martin, but that was hardly a game

changer.

Instead there seems to be a frailty about Millwall in the last quarter of games that emboldens the opposition, and you could see the home side ceding ground when there was no need. Apart from the opening 20 minutes Hull hadn’t given the impression that they possessed lots of dangerous attacking threats.

Their go-to creator was Kamil Grosicki but otherwise they weren’t really set up in a way to cause a whole lot of trouble.

The frustration is that the goals that Millwall are giving away are so obviously avoidable, any fan in the stand could pinpoint the errors leading to them. In the sixth minute Grosicki’s run into the box wasn’t tracked, Jarrod Bowen picked him out and the 64-cap Polish international drilled home at the near post.

Their 73rd minute equaliser was a

result of first Jordy de Wijs and then Markus Henriksen not being picked up from a corner, the latter heading in to make it 2-2.

Last week it was an own goal, the week before that another own goal, the week before that Mark Beevers being left free in the box, and we could go all the way back to the start of the season for instances of poor marking, the ball given away in dangerous areas, runners not being picked up.

Yet the question is if these defensive mistakes are so easily identifiable then why they keep occurring.

The back five is the same as the one that was so solid last season. Millwall have conceded fifteen more goals than after the same number of games in 2017-18, but they have at least scored

The Lions have been behind in games enough times this season not to panic, and after Grosicki scored they had the right response again. James Meredith was prominent down the left and when he crossed for Lee Gregory to equalise it was the left-back’s first assist since August 2016. It was also Gregory’s eighth goal of the season, his best return at this stage since 201516.

Millwall came out at the start of the second half electrically charged and after Jed Wallace and Shaun Hutchinson saw efforts cleared off the line Aiden O’Brien hammered home a low left-footed shot from 25 yards.

It was atonement for his failure to pick up Grosicki earlier.

Millwall were in pole position then and another goal would likely have seen them cruise home given Hull didn’t look like they had any answers.

But then de Wijs got free and Henriksen had much too simple a task from a couple of yards.

O’Brien, Gregory and Steve Morison had all been injury doubts but when it was suggested to Harris that could have been a reason for the late slackness he wasn’t willing to lean on it for an excuse.

Phil Connors eventually uses his time to learn to ice sculpt, to learn French and the piano. But despite knowing the sequences of events there are some things he still can’t control.

Harris would identify with the latter.

DESPITE THE elbows in the face and the fierce tackles from battlehardened old pros, Danny McNamara is keen to extend his loan deal at Welling United.

Right-back McNamara, 19, joined the National League South side in November on a month’s deal that is due to end after this Saturday’s trip to Hampton & Richmond.

Welling are fourth in the league table, with McNamara slotting in as the regular right-back for Steve King’s side.

McNamara, who will turn 20 on December 27, is a second-year professional with the club he supports after joining the under-16 ranks from Corinthian FC. He has been a regular with the under23s for the last two seasons, but pushed manager Kevin Nugent for a loan move to develop his game.

Welling is the first such move in his career, and he is benefitting from being in a side fighting it out near the top of the table.

McNamara was on the losing side for the first time in the league as Welling went down 3-1 at table-toppers Torquay last Saturday.

“I’m really enjoying it. Playing men’s football, you’re playing for wins and people’s livelihood. It’s good for me to develop,” McNamara said.

“It’s always nerve-wracking going somewhere and then playing your first game of men’s football. Physically it’s a lot tougher, you’re getting elbowed in the face and shipping harder tackles.

“Technically I would say it’s about the same as the 23s. You haven’t got as much time on the ball and it’s about making the right decisions because if you don’t you’re going to get done.

“I’ve always been asking to get out on loan. My manager was saying when it was the right time they’d get me out, that it had to be the right loan.

“The right loan came and they said it would be the best thing for me, and it has been because I think it’s making me more of a man on the pitch. I’m a more mature player now.

MILLWALL’S WEEK began with Christmas lunch at Calmont Road.

There were 34 chairs needed and a shortage in the players’ dining area, so PA to the first team Karen Wilson suggested commandeering a couple from CEO Steve Kavanagh’ office at the training ground.

Players chatted about their Christmas party in Dublin last weekend, there was the sound of a couple of plates smashing after being knocked off a table.

Kavanagh twice swirled through the narrow corridor to the players’ area trying to locate Neil Harris and head of recruitment Alex Aldridge,

who minutes later was going the opposite way balancing two cups of tea and manoeuvring the door open with a foot on his way to his department’s office in a portable cabin, of which there are others that pass as dressing rooms and meeting rooms.

It was all nicely chaotic and charming and quite far away from the glamour of the Premier League, a destination Millwall were potentially five games away from reaching last season.

But some traditions are worth a few scattered shards of porcelain on the floor to preserve.

“It’s something I’m quite big on,” Harris said. “We’ve got great spirit in the camp and they are a great bunch of boys.

“Of course we want to get better results on the pitch, but sitting down together having Christmas dinner and the lads having a laugh and a joke is important. We try to go quite big on it and having people talking together. In modern times it doesn’t always work like that, particularly with social media and computer games.

“The chefs have prepared Christmas dinner and we really appreciate it.

“There are no phones at the table, we don’t have that. I’ve got three kids myself that are mad with technological devices. You’re just saying to the boys here: ‘Talk.’”

If Millwall are to end their search for a first away win of the season at Deepdale on Saturday they will have

to focus on working hard now and see what happens.

“I speak to the gaffer [Harris] often, he asks how I’m getting on. They watch all my games back. I get feedback from Kevin Nugent, and the gaffer gets feedback from Kev. “I want to know what I’ve done well, what I can do better that can help me out. Hopefully one day I can cement my place in the first team.

“I want to get as long as possible here, get as many games out on loan as possible and show the gaffer I’m ready to play.”

RYAN TUNNICLIFFE says there needs to be “realistic” expectations around Millwall – but believes the current side are capable of another run like last season.

The Lions go to Deepdale on Saturday, the first of two away games before Christmas, in 20th place, a point above Reading and Bolton, with Ipswich in danger of being cast adrift seven points further back.

Millwall can look to Preston to see how quickly fortunes can change: The Lilywhites won one of their first ten games to sit bottom at the end of September, but after losing four in a row they went unbeaten in their next nine.

Millwall similarly dramatically improved their results in the last campaign after winning for the first time on the road at Leeds in January and then taking fifteen points out of the next fifteen away from home.

They eventually finished just three points off the top six.

“We have to be realistic. Last season was a great season but we can’t just expect to start pressing for promotion again. It’s a hard league, we’re only four points worse off than where we were last year,” Tunnicliffe said.

“All we need is one of those runs again like we had from the start of the year and see where it takes us. We got that winning streak going and it fired us up the league.

“If we can pick up a similar result on Saturday then who knows what it can do for us.

“At Leeds winning 2-0, then 3-2 down in the dying embers and emerging with a dramatic win against such a fierce rival really kick-started our season, especially away from home.

“We’re just waiting for one of them to come along. If we can win Saturday against a team that are in a bit of form then it could spur our season.

“The gaffer has said to us this week that we’re back to being the underdog.

Coming into the season there was a lot of expectation because of how well we finished the last campaign.

“Of course we were hoping we could pick up where we left off but that wasn’t to be. It’s back to underdog status and that suits this group of players and this club because we do like to turn up, put in a performance and show everyone up, because no one gives us a chance.”

Tunnicliffe, 25, knows all about expectations, having come through at one of the biggest clubs in the world, in a side with some of the world’s most talented youngsters.

In Manchester United’s FA Youth Cupwinning team of 2011, Tunnicliffe’s midfield partner was Paul Pogba, with Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison on the wings.

Tunicliffe is puzzled by the stories that Pogba is an unsettling presence in the dressing room, with one report alleging United boss Jose Mourinho compared the France midfielder to a “virus”.

“We were quite close mates, being midfield partners grows your bond,” Tunnicliffe said. “Off the pitch as well he was a great guy. It’s weird to see all the stuff being said about him, about him being poisonous, because I never saw that.

“Obviously it was a different time and it was the youth team, but he was the life of our team. I’m not there so I don’t know what’s going on, but you saw videos of him at the World Cup, leading the team and being a stand-out voice as they won the World Cup. “It’s a strange one. People say a lot of stuff and if you’re not on the inside you don’t really know.”

Morrison, who is nine months younger than Tunnicliffe, is still a well of unrealised potential.

“I did think he was going to be a superstar,” Tunnicliffe admitted. “I say to anyone who asks me even to this day that he was the most naturally talented that I’ve ever played with, and growing up at United I played with some good players.

“Better players than me have said the exact same thing as me. I thought he was going to be a world beater but one thing led to another and I’m sure it hasn’t turned out how he wanted it to.

“Again, he’s still young and all he needs is one chance and I’m sure his

natural ability will shine through.”

Tunnicliffe revealed he is still occasionally in touch with members of that side, which also included Michael Keane, now at Everton, and West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

“I don’t want to be pestering people,” Tunnicliffe joked. “Once a month or a couple of times a month you’ll say hi and have a little bit of a catch-up but I don’t want to be seen to be living in the past.

“Paul is a World Cup winner now. I saw him at Wembley when England played France [in November 2015] and it was like we’d never missed each other.

I’d not seen him in a couple of years.

We’ll always like each other and have that respect because we went into so many battles together as young lads.”

Mourinho has also been publicly critical of a number of his players and while Tunnicliffe wouldn’t speculate on the reasons behind it, he knows it’s not likely something his current boss Neil Harris would do.

“You can’t say too much about the

manager at United because he’s won a lot of trophies. His style works for him, each to their own,” he said.

“People handle things the way they see best to handle it. The manager here has said it to us many times even when we’ve had some terrible results that he’ll always back us when we’ve done something stupid.

“He’ll tell you what he actually does think in person which I think is best because it doesn’t need to be public, which he’d never do.

“You take it on the chin when he tells you face-to-face and you have to get on with it.

“If you’ve got Twitter these days you get every clipping sent to you. You would find out and it’s probably not great for your confidence if stuff like that is being said by your manager.”

Former Fulham midfielder Tunnicliffe finally has a chance to regularly impress Harris on the pitch with Shaun Williams out injured.

Williams eventually reclaimed his place, but Tunnicliffe is determined to give Harris a difficult decision when the Republic of Ireland international returns early next year.

“I was patient and trained as hard as possible when I wasn’t in the team,” Tunnicliffe said. “Obviously the suspension [to Ryan Leonard] came and I got my chance and then it was unfortunate for Willo that he got injured.

“But it’s good for me. It was the same last year, and it’s up to me that when Willo is back fit I keep him out of the side. That’s on my shoulders.

“We’re a team that plays quite well for large periods of games, it’s just at moments we switch off. Everyone works hard and gives solid performances every week, so it’s hard to get in the team. There is never a standout bad performance, so you’ve got to be patient, train hard and when you get a fortuitous chance like this take it with both hands.”

MILLWALL ARE busy talking to clubs and agents about January transfer targets – as Neil Harris revealed he could strengthen in a number of different positions.

Harris’ priority is likely to be a striker to replace the injured Tom Bradshaw, but he said the recruitment team are looking at players from “one to eleven”.

Millwall bolstered their squad last January by signing Ben Marshall, Tim Cahill, Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo.

Injuries have stretched Harris’ options this season, with the next transfer window likely to see reinforcements

“We’re looking at players that will improve us as a squad, not just strikers but one to eleven to try to make us a better group to try to give us that injection, that boost that we had last January,” Harris said. “We want to do that again, it’s just as important this year as last year.

“Trying to attract players in January is very difficult. You’ve got players who are not fit, like when Marshy came to us he hadn’t been playing, we had to build him up over a three-week period before he got his chance.

“Timmy came in from out of the country, hadn’t played for a month.

Jason Shackell had only played in the cup. You take a risk with players bringing them in.

“Or you bring players in and you completely over-pay – I think you can

rule out that one for us.

“We’ve made it work in the past but we’re looking at a pool of players that’s quite small. The pool of players that are available today will be completely different to who’s available on January 2. That’s something I’ve learnt over the last couple of years.

“We can chase players now but come January 2 they might have played three games over Christmas and done really well.

“We have been close to bringing in Championship players on loan or permanently who were nowhere near the team before suddenly being in team of the week in the Championship.

That’s how quickly the game can change.

“We are continuously scouring the market to see who’s available or who

might be interested in coming. We’re speaking to clubs, speaking to agents but the reality is the availability of those players could change dramatically.

“We are mindful of that. Nailing down who exactly we want to get, we won’t do that today.

RYAN TUNICLIFFE hopes to do enough to impress Neil Harris to earn a new deal with Millwall.

Tunnicliffe signed a two-year contract when he joined on a free transfer in the summer of 2016.

The former Manchester United and Fulham midfielder has his chance of regular starts with Shaun Williams out injured until early next year.

Tunnicliffe has started 24 league games for Millwall, finding himself third-choice midfielder behind Williams and George Saville, and then club-record signing Ryan Leonard.

Tunnicliffe would like to extend his Lions stay, but admits some of it is out of his hands.

“It’s up to the manager. It’s coming to six months left after Christmas and all I can do when I’ve got this chance is perform,” Tunnicliffe said.

“Hopefully I’ll do enough in his eyes that he’ll want to keep me around.

“There’s a lot of football to be played from now until the end of the season. First and foremost I can only look after myself and my performances.

“It doesn’t really matter what I think, if the gaffer doesn’t want me I don’t have a decision to make.

“I need to perform and make sure he wants to give me a new deal.”
