GENDER PAY GAP IN THE SPOTLIGHT

A

MID ALL the shocking headlines about yawning gender pay gaps, Southwark Council should be congratulated for being one of the best local authorities in London in this regard.

The pay gap of 10.7 per cent is actually in favour of women - which puts our borough just 0.2 per cent behind high-performing Lewisham. With consecutive female Chief Executives, the message that you’re judged on ability, not gender, couldn’t be clearer. Clearly though, pay equality is something that has to run right through an organisation, from top to bottom.

Our other big local employers didn’t fare quite so well. Three quarters of King’s College Hospital staff are women, yet they earn on average 24 per cent less than their male colleagues. With more male consultants, this would go some way to explaining the gap, but they have work to do to bridge this. Guy’s and St Thomas’ have a smaller gap - of 16.5 per cent in favour of men - but have acknowledged that they need to address this.

Millwall made it on to the list as one of the worst offenders - with an eye-watering gap of 80 per cent. However, they subsequently revised their figures to reveal there was no difference in the hourly rate. Clearly the gap in a male football club, when taking players’ wages into account, is going to be substantial, so it seems a bit unfair to bracket them with employers who don’t build what they do around a gender-specific element.

The Government has made it compulsory for all organisations with over 250 employees to provide these figures, but it has done far more than this. Companies small and large will now be looking at their gender pay gaps and considering whether they have an imbalance.

It’s to be welcomed that this new legislation has brought gender pay equality into sharp focus.

Local teen left speechless as he lands part of young Michael Jackson

A KENNINGTON boy who plays a young Michael Jackson in the hit West End musical Motown has said landing the part left him “speechless”.

Thirteen-year-old Tumo Reetsang, from Kennington, shares his new role with Rio Myers, ten, from Lewisham, as part of a new cast announced in February.

He told the News he was “so excited” to join the production, which he had seen performed “multiple times”.

He said: “I felt so ecstatic and I’m very grateful to be in the show.

“When I found out that I got the part, I was speechless and I’m quite a talkative person!

“It wasn’t just being part of any ordinary show, it was joining a legacy that had been built up over 50 years!

“I was playing one of the world’s greatest performers in front of an audience.

“Obviously there were some first day jitters but after my first show I really settled into the motown family.”

Tumo first got into musical theatre after taking part in drama lessons at primary school to help build his confidence, which led to him also joining the school choir.

The actor, who attends a performing arts school, had his first role in Everyman, at the National Theatre, before landing roles in Kinky Boots and Les Blancs.

He told the News his friends, family and teachers are very supportive: “Once my Aunty came to watch the show and she screamed my name while I was singing, I tried so hard not to burst out laughing!

“That’s one of the cool things about live theatre… the screaming aunties!”

Jackson fan, who grew up singing Michael Jackson songs in talent competitions, Tumo is particularly delighted to be able to perform motown classics.

He said: “The motown sound has so much groove, funk and soul to it that has made its way through so many generations of people across the world.

“One of my favourite motown songs is I Heard It Through the Grapevine but I also favour Who's Lovin' You, which I

sing in the show.

“MJ’s music was so special and it reached out to many audiences, just like motown music.”

Tumo said his favourite part of being on stage is “getting to do what I love and having fun, then getting a reaction from the audience which fuels me even more with so much positive energy,” and he says he is in the industry for the longhaul.

“I will definitely keep performing

because it's what I enjoy,” he explained, “there are so many different styles of acting and different types of stages and theatres which I really want to learn about.

“When I'm older, I would really like to venture into directing and also maybe get some stage-hand experience as well as acting in shows.”

Teen charged with attempted murder after SE11 stabbing

POLICE INVESTIGATING a Kennington stabbing have charged a teenage boy with attempted murder.

‘IT’S OUT OF ORDER’

ELDERLY RESIDENTS in a fivestorey block have been left “housebound” and others have had to drag groceries and pushchairs up and down a stairwell for weeks because of a broken lift.

The lift in an L&Q housing association block in Reculver Road, Rotherhithe, has been out of action since it broke down about six weeks ago.

Some elderly and disabled residents are said to have faced difficulty in leaving their homes or to have been left housebound because of the situation, while other residents have had to carry pushchairs, children and groceries up and down the stairs.

Ellie Nunn, 28, who lives on the top floor of the block with her partner and three young children, said residents were paying service charges “for a service they are not getting”.

“I have to take the buggy and everything up and down to the top floor, I’ve got blisters on my hands and my daughter has fallen down the stairs and got bruises,” she said.

“There’s a 90-year-old woman who hasn’t left the house and there are people with disabilities.

“At the same time I’ve got a message saying they are upping our service charge again.

“I was promised by L&Q that it would be sorted by the bank holiday; we are paying for a service we are not getting and it’s been six weeks.”

Laurel Milwid, who only moved into the building in November, said it was “very difficult” for her to get in and out because of a back injury.

“I’m more or less housebound at the moment; I work from home so that helps but I need to get to medical appointments,” she said.

“There’s an elderly lady on the same floor as me who’s completely housebound now and a woman on the fourth floor who’s been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s who’s unable to use the stairs and there’s another man who has a spinal injury who is having immense

difficulty getting in and out and it’s just people trying to get their groceries up and down.

“The lack of concern L&Q have shown they haven’t made contact with residents to ask what the problems with residents are or how they can help.”

Robin Feeley, group director for maintenance and operational services at L&Q, said the lift would be fixed by the end of this week and that residents would be offered compensation.

“We are incredibly sorry for the inconvenience and stress our residents have experienced while the lift has been out of action,” he said.

“This has been a complex repair job and we are currently awaiting delivery of specialist parts from the lift manufacturers.

“We are now expecting the lift to be back in service by the end of the week.

“We will continue to provide regular updates to residents.

“This service has not been good enough and we will be contacting affected residents shortly to offer appropriate compensation.”

THE LONDON Met is investigating after a man was found with a stab wound in Herne Hill last Thursday, April 5.

Police were called at around 10.05pm after reports of a stabbing on Railton Road, SE24, and attended the scene with the London Ambulance Service.

The victim is believed to be in his 40s and was taken to hospital with injuries describes as not lifethreatening or life-changing.

Road closures were put in place and bus routes diverted, which now appear to be running a normal service.

The attack is one of a spate of seven knife attacks across the capital in 24hours, six of whom were injured within just 90 minutes of each other.

Police say no arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

As reported by the News last week, Lambeth police are appealing for information in connection with the attack on Friday, March 23 on Kennington Road, which left 30-yearold Dwayne Kevin Buchanan in a critical condition.

Mr Buchanan was found stabbed near the junction of Kennington Road with Black Prince Road at 11.38am,

and was taken to a London hospital by paramedics.

A seventeen-year-old male was arrested on Tuesday, April 3, and charged the following day with attempted murder.

He appeared at Camberwell Youth Court on Thursday, April 5 and was remanded in custody.

Police say the victim still in hospital in a critical condition.

Police investigating death in custody of 26-year-old man

THE INDEPENDENT Office for Police Conduct is investigating the death of a man who had been held in custody at Walworth police station, the London Met has confirmed.

Police said the 26-year-old driver was stopped on Brandon Street, SE17, at approximately 11.30 am on Friday, March 30 and detained on suspicion of possessing a knife.

After a lock knife was found in the vehicle he was taken to Walworth police station where, at 12.15 pm, custody staff called an ambulance after suspecting he had swallowed a substance.

The man was taken to a central London hospital by ambulance and died on Saturday, March 31.

A post-mortem will also be held.

Police have confirmed that the London Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards is investigating and a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has begun an independent investigation.

IOPC regional director, Sarah Green, said: “My thoughts are with the young man’s family and friends at this most difficult time, as well as all those affected by this tragic incident.

“We were made aware of the man’s arrest, and that he had been taken to hospital, on the afternoon of Friday, March 30 and we sent our investigators to the custody suite and to post incident procedures.

“They have been working since that time to gather all the available evidence at this early stage of our investigation.

“We will be offering the man’s family regular updates on the progress of our investigation.”

ome of the borough’s biggest employers have submitted their gender pay gap reports – with one success story and two showing there is still a mountain to climb.

In March 2017, new legislation required all organisations with more than 250 employees to publish their gender pay gap data, with a deadline of April 4, 2018.

This gap is the difference between average hourly earnings for men and women, regardless of the nature of their work.

This is different to equal pay – which looks at differences in earnings between the sexes for the same job.

Southwark Council, led by chief executive Eleanor Kelly - reported a gender pay gap of 10.7 per cent - in favour of women. One of the best in London with neighbouring Lewisham recording a slightly higher hourly rate of 10. 9 per cent higher for women than men.

Two of the borough’s other largest employers however, both admitted that men were, on average, earning higher than women, as men were still more likely to hold more senior positions.

Although King’s College Hospital’s staff is overwhelmingly female – 76 per cent compared to 23.6 per cent male – at an hourly rate, women’s pay was, on average, 24 per cent less than men.

It also reported a total of 479 male consultants, a senior doctor, compared

with 357 female ones.

Meanwhile, at Guy’s and St Thomas’, women’s hourly pay in 2017 were, on average, 16.50 per cent lower than their male counterparts.

A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said: “The Trust is committed to providing services and employment opportunities which are inclusive across all strands of equality, including gender.

“Our workforce – in common with the wider NHS workforce – is predominantly female. We have a female chief executive

and a gender-balanced board of directors.

“As our report sets out, we are confident that we have identified the key reasons behind our pay gap.

“While male and female employees are paid equally for doing the same level of role, we will be using our findings to address any inequalities of opportunity for career progression, and to ensure that our senior management group reflects the diversity of the wider organisation and patient population.”

King’s College Hospital said it would continue to ensure that gender equality is

an integral part of its equality, diversity and inclusion strategy, ensure gender balance and independence on all recruitment panels through yearly audits and exploring areas that be influencing the Gender pay gap and discuss the issue at board level.

Millwall disputes being listed in ‘worst ten pay gap’

MILLWALL FC insists it is “unwavering in its pursuit of complete fairness and equality in the workplace” and that its gender pay gap figures are “skewed” by players’ wages.

In an attempt to increase awareness and improve pay equality, the Government made it compulsory for all companies, charities and public sector bodies with more than 250 employees to submit their gender pay figures by last Wednesday, April 4.

The gender pay gap is defined as the difference in median pay between men and women.

Millwall Holdings PLC, the partner company of Millwall FC, was initially listed as among the top ten organisations with the worst gender pay

gap after reporting a gap of 80 per cent.

The figures also revealed 29 per cent of men received a bonus at Millwall, compared to three per cent of women.

However Millwall later revised its figures to reveal there was no difference between women’s median hourly rate compared to men’s, saying it had “noted an error in both mean and median metrics”.

The club added that if playing staff were removed from the gender pay gap measurements, Millwall would “prove to pay its female and male staff fairly and equally when compared in rank and seniority”.

“Unlike most other companies, Millwall, similarly to other football clubs, has a large number of more highly-paid male workers, made up of its professional footballers, and consequently the average wage, calculated firstly as a mean hourly rate, is disproportionate but also therefore

easily explainable,” the club said.

“Money received by the players in bonuses over the course of last year, which includes promotion figures, has pushed up the average for men at the club and made bonuses for women look low in comparison.

“The club is unwavering in its pursuit of complete fairness and equality in the workplace but believes that more work is needed on the gender pay gap to ensure that positive progress is not lost by the fact that figures can be skewed between different industries.”

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission said 1,557 firms had missed the deadline.

These organisations will be investigated and could face legal action.

For the UK as a whole, the gap has reduced in the last ten years but is still in favour of men, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Council says legal fight prevents it from using full powers

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL says it has not fully used its powers to take over empty homes because the legal fight is too costly.

According to a freedom of information request from the Liberal Democrats, Southwark Council has never issued an empty dwelling management order.

Empty dwelling management orders (EDMOs) allow councils forcibly to lease a property for seven years, encouraging absentee owners to put the homes to good use.

The council said it had not used the powers due to cost – although the Liberal Democrats believe that expenses incurred in issuing these orders are recouped once the home is let out again.

Although the council has not used any empty dwelling orders, it has slapped Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) on some vacant homes, as well as working with owners on other solutions.

A council spokesperson told the News: “Over the past three years, Southwark Council has brought a total of 125 units back into use.

“Options have ranged from funding assistance, advice and information that led to owners redeveloping or selling

their properties, as well as the council providing leasing options for landlords.

“CPOs have historically been the preferred legal option over EDMOs due to the cost involved in the works to bring long-term problematic empty properties back into use.

“Within the EDMO framework councils can lease a property for a maximum of seven years, funding therefore must be recouped within that timeframe, including any additional cost such as management fees.

“The process often involves years of casework history in order to encourage owners to bring their empty properties back into use.

“CPO action is therefore considered a very last resort where all attempts fail or where an owner is untraceable, for example.

“Southwark Council has not taken any legal action on any empty properties in the past three years, or used any empty property management orders.

“However, in the past ten years, Southwark Council has obtained five confirmed CPOs on four properties and one vacant site.

“Out of the five, three of these orders led to successful acquisitions.

“The reuse of the remaining two properties was secured by mutual

agreement which meant that the CPO order was not enforced in these cases.”

Data collected by the Lib Dems shows in the last five years some local authorities have used the orders to force homes to be re-let, including Rochdale, which placed orders of 22 homes, Dorset which used the powers on 24 homes, and South Tyneside, with 16 properties.

But nationally take-up has been low with councils exercising the power being the exception, rather than the rule and in London, no in London, no councils have used the empty dwelling management orders in the last five years.

In 2011, when the length of time a home must have been empty for an order to be used was increased from six months to two years, making it much harder for councils to collect proof the properties were continually empty.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, said: “There are almost 6,000 homes sitting empty in Southwark. More than Lewisham, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets put together.

Cancer sufferer gets video from chart-topping singer after appeal in the News

A BERMONDSEY cancer sufferer whose dying wish is to meet Ed Sheeran received a “wonderful surprise” from the musician.

Barbara Morris got in touch with the News to see if the newspaper could help her reach out to the chart-topping singer-songwriter, after she was given just months to live.

The 65-year-old said her dying wish was to meet Ed, whose music had brought her comfort since she was diagnosed with skin cancer a few years ago and also lost her husband of 47 years and her father in a short space of time.

Shortly after the News contacted the musician’s management asking if Barbara could meet him in person, she received a video message from none other than the redhead himself.

Appearing on camera in a grey hooded sweatshirt while on tour in New Zealand, the Shape of You and Perfect singer sent his love to Barbara, saying he hoped the message would make her smile.

“Hey Barbara, Ed here,” he said.

“I’m currently in Dunedin in New Zealand and I’m sending you a message to... I heard that you’re a fan so I wanted to say ‘hi’ and I hope this makes your day and makes you smile, so lots of love.”

Barbara said she didn’t realise what the video was at first and was “a bit shocked”.

“I clicked on it on my phone and he was just there, it was a wonderful surprise,” she said.

“My grandson has saved the video for me so I can watch it whenever I like.”

The mother of three said she appreciated the video, but admitted she was slightly disappointed that she didn’t get to meet Ed in person.

“I know he’s really busy but I would

still love to meet him,” she said.

“When I first watched the video I was a bit disappointed but then I thought about it afterwards and I was really grateful.

“He’s such a busy man, so it was great for him to do that for me.”

Barbara was diagnosed with malignant melanoma a few years ago after noticing a lump on her right leg, which doctors managed to cut out.

But earlier this year she was given the tragic news that the skin cancer had spread and that she had stage four

metastatic melanoma.

The grandmother said she was given just four to six months to live unless immunotherapy treatment works.

“I’m on my third cycle of immunotherapy now but it’s making me really, really tired almost like I’ve got flu,” she said.

“I think there’s one more cycle and then the doctors will do scans to see whether it has shrunk my tumour.

“I will always have stage four cancer but there’s a 30 per cent chance it will work and prolong my life.”

Extra police presence to ‘deter, detect and disrupt terrorism’

A BEEFED-UP police presence of counter-terrorism officers has gone live across London, including Southwark, the London Met has confirmed.

Project Servator is the Met’s new frontline tactic to “deter, detect and disrupt terrorism”, and has been trialled in locations such as the Square Mile and Heathrow Airport since 2014 and 2016 respectively.

The deployment enables officers to respond quickly – and flexibly – to potential threats with both undercover and highly visible officers.

According to the police, Project Servator officers have gathered more than 500 pieces of intelligence about suspected criminal activity and conducted more than 550 searches; leading to 176 arrests for various offences.

A spokesperson from the London Met told the News: “There are hundreds of Project Servator officers being deployed across London every week, and they will often be joined by officers from a range of other police units, including the Dogs Unit, Mounted Branch, Marine Police Unit,

and the Automatic Number Plate Recognition Bureau.

“We will not be discussing specific numbers as this may provide potential terrorists with information that helps them.

“Project Servator officers are not based in one specific area. Instead, the hundreds of specially trained officers are being deployed day and night, as and when required, across numerous areas of London.”

Superintendent Nick Aldworth, head of the Met’s project Servator teams, said the public should not be worried if they see a deployment in their area, and encouraged them to speak to officers they see and report anything that seems unusual, out of place, or “doesn’t seem to fit with day-to-day life.”

IN THE fight against terrorism and radicalisation, police are calling on people to report suspicious online content or activity, including far-right material.

The UK’s Counter Terrorist Internet Referral Unit was established in 2010 and, since then, says it has taken down more than 300,000 pieces of terrorist material and provided key evidence and information in 226 counter-terrorism investigations.

Police say the majority of this material relates to Islamist extremism, but in the last year there has been an increase of content related to extreme right-wing ideology, accounting for a quarter of public referrals since March 2017.

Commander Clarke Jarrett, head of the Counter Terrorism Command, said: "It's vital that if the public see something online they think could be terrorist-related that they act and flag it up to us.

CONTROVERSIAL STOP and search powers and dispersal zones are being used by police to tackle a surge in violent crime in Southwark.

On Sunday, April 8, Southwark police announced it had obtained a borough-wide Section 60, until 7am on Monday, April 9, “following a violent incident earlier in the day”, giving officers the power to stop and search.

Earlier in the week, seven people across London were stabbed within 24 hours, with one stabbing taking place in Herne Hill on Thursday evening.

The victim, a man in his 40s, did not have lifethreatening injuries.

The London met says it is investigating 53 murders since January 1, 2018, including the deaths of two children whose bodies were found in Sussex for which the Met retains primacy of the investigation.

In a statement from the London Met, a spokesperson said: “The Commissioner has been clear that she will support officers if the number of stop and searches increases in the fight against knife crime.

“It is, however just one of a number of powers and tactics used by officers; tactics include centrally led operations, weapons sweeps, targeted test purchasing and plainclothes policing operations to tackle those who choose to carry knives.

“The Commissioner has been clear that she will support officers if the number of stops and searches rises in the fight against knife crime and street violence.

“The use of Section 60 is an important tactic deployed to disrupt and deter, and the recent increase reflects the current climate.

“Where there is a fear of serious violence, authority at Commander-level will be given for a limited time and in a limited space.

“The vast majority of the public support our use of stop and search and we will continue to use

every policing power at our disposal to get weapons off the streets.”

The London Met also launched a new violent crime task force, on Saturday, April 7, with “fulltime, specially selected, ring-fenced and dedicated police officers, who will solely focus on violent crime, weapon-enabled crime and serious criminality”.

Avril Jones, an independent police advisor and stop and search community lead, based in Southwark, said she was in favour of stop and search when used “respectfully and where appropriate”, but was concerned to hear that dispersal zones had also been recently implemented across Southwark.

She told the News: “Dispersal zones are a kneejerk reaction to the situation, and are used by the police because they do not have the number of officers or resources they need, on the ground.

“Stop and search orders have to go through the commander, at a top level, but dispersal zones – although still informed by intelligence - can be implemented by local police, more easily.

“The police are using them as a way to move people on and out of a particular vicinity, but the tactic does not engage with people living in these communities.

“It does beg the conversation about why we would want to move people on in the first place – and how this can be used in a way that does not discriminate or cause frustration to already disenfranchised communities.”

The debate comes as new figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show that Southwark has lost 60 police officers within a year.

In January this year, Southwark had 665 police officers – compared with 957 in 2010.

From 2017-2018, according to the Liberal Democrats, knife crime and moped-enabled crime increased by half, and muggings were up by a quarter. Both rises are double the London average.

Southwark Police were contacted for comment, but were unable to respond at the time of going to press.

AN EAST Dulwich GP surgery has been moved out of special measures and rated as ‘good’ overall by the health watchdog.

Forest Hill Group Practice was rated ‘good’ for being safe, caring, responsive and well-led by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) at its most recent inspection in February, although it was rated ‘requires improvement’ for being effective.

Previously it was ‘inadequate’. The practice had also improved its leadership and management to ensure that improvements made were embedded and sustained. The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided.

It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence-based guidelines and now had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen.

When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes. Staff treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.

However, there are areas where the practice should make improvements such as work to monitor and improve access to routine appointments and to monitor and improve telephone access, to improve the care of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and fragility fractures, to increase the uptake of childhood immunisations, and to improve systems that support patients with caring responsibilities Acting Deputy Chief Inspector of General Practice Michele Golden said: “It is always encouraging when a provider improves to the extent that it is taken out of special measures and is rated ‘good’.

“There is still improvement in care that can be achieved at the Forest Hill Group Practice and I hope the good work there might lead to an even better rating in the future.”

Gladys Gorringe seated in peach jacket with friends and family

GLADYS GORRINGE, described by friends and family as the ‘dapper lady’, was joined by generations of her family for her 105th birthday this week.

Ten members of her family and fellow residents of Rose Court Care Home in Rotherhithe celebrated with a party and invited the Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Charlie Smith.

The centenarian’s event was organised by care home staff, with party food served and a guitarist to sing “Happy Birthday” and other favourites like “The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond”.

five generations of the family visiting,” said Shirley, her niece.

Born in Walthamstow in 1913, Gladys worked in a munitions factory in Gloucester during the Second World War. She moved to Bermondsey when she got married in 1946 and was employed in Peek Freans factory and used to bring home broken biscuits for the family, her sisters remember.

Her husband Tom Gorringe originally worked with his brother Robert at the Talbot Brothers barge builders in

Rotherhithe. He then taught woodwork at a local school until his health declined.

After Tom passed away in 1975, Gladys continued living in their home in Neptune Estate on Albion Street until she moved into Rose Court Care Home seven years ago.

The couple had no children, but Gladys comes from a large family – she was one of eleven siblings.

She has three brothers still living, and her two remaining sisters Win Smith and Rose Wallace were at the party on Tuesday.

Unsurprisingly Gladys is the oldest, with Win 20 years her junior.

“She always looked after the younger ones – we always called her Big Sis,” she said.

The rest of the family, who have travelled from Dorset and Reading, know Gladys as a “dapper lady”.

She continued her line dancing across the road until she was 88. Although living with dementia, Gladys is still going strong and appears happy and healthy, according to care home staff.

Shirley applauded the work of the care home staff: “They’re really good people here.

They take good care of Gladys. If I needed looking after, this would be a nice place to be.”

No estate demolition and the end to right-to-buy

THE GREEN Party launched its local campaign on Thursday with a commitment to protect social housing and end the right-to-buy policy.

The party says its local election campaign is its “strongest ever”, with the largest number of Green candidates standing for elections in London in its history.

Jonathan Bartley, Green co-leader, launched the campaign at Gypsy Hill’s Central Hill estate, near Crystal Palace, currently facing demolition.

Green councillor Scott Ainslie has backed a residents’ campaign to save the estate.

At the launch, the party committed to protect social homes and always aim to repair them instead of demolition, and give residents living in homes earmarked for demolition a ballot on their future.

Mr Bartley said: “Any community which puts a Green on their council chooses

someone who values social housing and will fight to protect it.

“Greens will always work to give people a say in their futures - and stand with them to oppose the demolition of homes against their wishes.

“With the political will, we could work to repair social homes rather than demolish them and scatter communities across the country.

“It’s time, too, the Government treated social housing with the value it deserves and ended the Right to Buy scheme which has pushed stock to crisis point.

The party is aiming to have a Green councillor on every council across the county.

A FORMER Lewisham and Southwark College pupil has been re-elected as president of the National Union of Students (NUS) for 2018.

Shakira Martin, 29, who used to live in Peckham, was re-elected as national president for 2018/19 during the union’s national conference in Glasgow.

The single mother of two fought off competition from King’s College London students’ union president Momin Saqib and Momentum campaigner Sahaya James, who is also campaigns officer at the University of the Arts London’s students’ union, to be elected for the second year running.

Speaking to the News after her win, Shakira said she was “really proud and excited” to be re-elected.

“I’m the second president since the NUS was formed 96 years ago to come from further education rather than university and the first black woman,” she said.

“Further education gave me ten years

of different choices because I left school at sixteen and I didn’t know what the power of education was.

“I had my first daughter in 2011 and I thought ‘I need to do something different’.

“It’s hard being a single parent but I just want other people, other single mothers, other black women or young people to think ‘you know what, I can do it’.

“Many of us go to university or college to get qualifications but overcoming adversity is a lifetime qualification and I use my experience to fight for change.”

Shakira said her slogan this year was “it’s time to get real”.

“It’s about the issues people are facing on the streets and I want to represent the everyday person,” she said.

“I used to live in Peckham so for me I just want people to get the opportunity to break the cycle of deprivation.

“My key objectives include poverty and getting into university is just one part of it – but what about getting on.

“I want to be talking about scrapping tuition fees as well; I strongly believe in education as a right, not a privilege, but scrapping tuition fees is just one problem

when there are others such as a housing crisis and bedroom tax.”

In a speech at the conference, Shakira said: “I know I’m not your typical president, and I can’t promise I’m perfect, but what I can say is I will give all for my kids, my membership, and the next generation, and I will never stop trying to make education a real option for everyone.”

Shakira pledged in her election manifesto to:

• Fight for a minimum living income for all students and securing the return of grants • Fight for regulation that forces universities and colleges to reduce costs • Build and launch a national student rights framework on everything from academic appeals to eduroam • Demand universal discounts on student travel.

A promising footballer who injured his hip before a trial with a premier league football club is back on the pitch thanks to Evelina London’s new service.

Jovel Jackson-Davis, 15, was one of the first patients to benefit from the hospital’s keyhole hip and knee surgery service.

Evelina London Children’s Hospital is the first children’s hospital in London and the south east to have a service of this kind.

Rising numbers of children are suffering from knee and hip injuries due to the increasing popularity of competitive sports. Keyhole surgery is already a wellestablished procedure for adults, and is used to remove or repair damaged cartilage, torn ligaments and inflamed tissue around joints.

The benefits to children are the same as in adults: the procedure is less invasive than traditional surgery, patients experience less pain and recovery is much faster, which is good news for sports-mad teenagers like Jovel.

He says: “When I hurt my hip, the timing couldn’t have been worse. I had just been spotted by a talent scout and offered a trial with Everton, and I was really worried this would ruin my chances. But Evelina London got me back on the pitch in record time. I had my operation in September and by January I was back training and free from pain.”

Guy's and St Thomas' is playing its part to improve employment opportunities through The Autism Project, an initiative between the Trust and CareTrade – a charity helping young people with autism prepare for work.

People with ASD tend to have problems with social interaction and communication.

It's estimated that 700,000 people in the UK are autistic and only 16% of autistic

adults are in full-time paid employment.

Liam Giles, 26, is one of seven people with autism to be employed by the Trust as a result of The Autism Project.

Liam was supported to make an application for employment to Guy's and St Thomas' and throughout the interview process. In February 2017, he successfully secured a data assistant post in the cancer information solution team, which is part of the oncology and haematology directorate.

Liam says: “I started looking for admin jobs at 22 and I’d applied for a lot of jobs. It was really tough because when I’m talking to people I’m wondering what I’m going to say next. It can make it hard to answer questions.

A rise in measles

TWO MAJOR NHS hospitals in south London have reported a rise in the number of people contracting the highly contagious measles virus.

Measles is most commonly found in children aged one to four who have not been immunised, though it can be caught at any age.

Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) in Farnborough recorded six confirmed cases, while King’s College Hospital (KCH) in Camberwell disclosed two. Further cases are also suspected.

“Although most cases can be successfully treated some patients experience life-threatening complications such as pneumonia and brain swelling”, said Roxanne Mohammad-Klein, Deputy Director of Infection at KCH. “If you suspect that you or a member of your family has measles you should phone (not visit) your GP without delay.”

Look out for the following symptoms: • A bumpy rash starting beyond the ear and spreading over the face and body.

•Small white spots inside the cheeks.

•Inflamed tonsils.

• An increasing high temperature.

Conference for Green-fingered locals THE WALWORTH Community Gardening Network will hold its first conference for community gardeners on Saturday April 21.

It will be hosted in Walworth Garden, with workshops and discussions running from 10.30am-3pm.

Workshops will focus on how to start and maintain a community garden, attracting new volunteers to the community and gardening for health and wellbeing.

‘£9.9 MILLION LOSS ON FIXED ODDS BETTING’

NEW RESEARCH shows that Southwark is one of the London boroughs hardest hit by fixedodds problem gambling.

According to research conducted by economics consultancy, the Centre for Economics and Business Research, fixed-odds betting terminals are costing Southwark an estimated £9.9 million in ‘social harm losses’ every year.

The researched was commissioned the British Amusement Catering Trade Association, known as BACTA, the body for the amusement and gaming machine industry.

Rather than just calculating the financial loss caused by gambling, researchers took into account the overall ‘social harm’ experienced by problem gamblers.

BERMONDSEY DEAFNESS charity Auditory Verbal UK will launch their national awareness campaign on Friday, 8 June.

Teachers, students and celebrities all over the country will wear their brightest clothes for ‘Loud Shirt Day’ to raise awareness for deaf children.

Auditory Verbal UK, based in Jamaica Road, helps children with permanent hearing loss to speak and listen without the need for sign language or lip syncing.

The charity, established in 2003, offers special ‘play based’ therapy sessions.

Results are very successful, with 80% of children developing spoken language skills after two years on their early

intervention programme.

Families travel across the country to access the treatment.

With less than five per cent of families with a deaf child having access to Auditory Verbal therapy, the campaign hopes to expand the availability of the treatment beyond the capital.

Audrey Johnston is one of 1,000 children whose life has been improved by the treatment. His parents Katy and Mark said it has been hugely helpful.

“During the first two to three years of getting Audrey to learn to listen and speak, there were uncertainties and exhaustion and anxiety, but the outcome has been way beyond what we would have dared to dream.”

“The main problem we face on a day-today basis is that sometimes Audrey never stops talking!”

Their estimates include the cost to people directly affected by gamblers’ behaviour, such as their family, as well as the wider impact on their health, financial stability, and housing.

Southwark is only behind Westminster, Brent and Newham out of all London boroughs.

The capital is the most affected city in the UK, with total gambling losses from fixed-odds machines estimated to be as high as £241.2million - almost ten times higher than any other city in the country.

BACTA says fixed-odds betting terminals are most prevalent in deprived areas, and it is supporting a national campaign to legally reduce

fixed odds stakes from £100 to £2.

The Church of England, Royal Society for Public Health and 93 local authorities across England and Wales have also called for a £2 stake.

John White, CEO of BACTA, said: “This research starkly demonstrates the human cost that fixed-odds betting terminals bring, to both problem gamblers and their families.

“Only by cutting fixed-odds stakes to £2 can we begin to make progress with the huge task of tackling problem gambling, one that starts with removing the most obvious incentives to harm.”

According to the Campaign for Fairer Gambling group, there are 82 betting shops across Southwark with 296 fixed-odds betting terminals.

In 2016, punters in Southwark were

estimated to have lost more than £20 million.

Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware told the News: “All gambling products are risky.

“The latest evidence shows that participation on machines in bookmakers is around 1% of adults who gamble as compared to 18% gambling online, where there are no limits to stakes and prizes.

“With 443,000 problem gamblers and two million at risk of becoming so it is important to recognise gamblingrelated harms represent a significant public health issue.

“We want people to know that they can talk to someone about their gambling via the National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133 and online at BeGambleAware.org.”

THE WORLD’S first small beer brewery has opened its doors to the public in Bermondsey.

After scouring pumps at pubs and restaurants for low alcohol beer with good flavour to avoid an unproductive afternoon at work or a sore head the following morning, James Grundy and Felix James decided to set up their own brewery.

The pair, who met while working at Sipsmith Gin, found a gap in the market for small beer brewed between 0.5% and 2.8% ABV (alcohol by volume) without compromising on flavour.

In 2016 they set up Small Beer Brew Co, nestled in Verney Road just a stone’s throw away from South Bermondsey station, began trading in November 2017, and threw open their doors to the public yesterday (Wednesday).

Speaking to the News, 30-year-old James, who lives in Peckham, said: “We noticed the lower alcohol beer had this flavour missing and we thought that can’t be, surely there must be an option

that allows you to have all of that great taste but doesn’t knock you for six.

“What we knew was that traditionally brewing is all about getting the maximum amount of alcohol from your raw material but that wasn’t going to work for us so we needed to flip the whole process on itself to maximise the flavour profiles but minimise the alcohol we had acquired during the brewing process.

“We actually designed the kit for the brewery and went to contractors to build it and they said ‘you are not going to be able to brew beer with this’.”

James explained small beer was popular during the 1700s when water quality was poor.

“Historically, small beer was always brewed between 0.5% and 2.8% ABV and it was made as a second running, so people would brew their big beer at 56% and then had a second running which meant you had far less fermentable sugars,” he said.

“It was actually also brewed in homes by women and it was given to everyone from schoolchildren to high society – it was a staple and it was drunk as an alternative to water because the water

quality at the time was dangerous.

“This was a part of day-to-day life as much as bread was but after water filtration methodology emerged, the art of its production was lost so our aim is to bring it back.”

Small Beer Brew Co uses 100 per cent green electricity and all of the brewery’s labels, boxes and business cards are completely recyclable.

James and Felix, 31, who lives in Catford, have also tried to reduce water waste in the brewing process; typically eight to ten pints of water are used to produce one pint of beer but they have got it down to one and a half pints for one pint of beer.

They also believe their brewery to be the only dry floor brewery in the whole of the UK. The brewery will offer beers on draught as well as food and the community will be able to use the space for events, exhibitions and music.

It will be open to the public ThursdaySaturday and details of opening hours and events will be available on the brewery’s social media accounts.

T’S LOCAL elections day in Southwark and across London on May 3rd.

The result of the public consultation on the proposed protected cycleway in Bermondsey, by the Mayor of London, showed how out of touch Southwark’s Labour administration and the Lib Dem Official Opposition are with public opinion. Whilst a massive 83% backed the Mayor, both Labour and LibDems formally objected. Labour’s official submission hilariously called for the cycleway to be halted until traffic congestion was reduced…!

Make no mistake, but the provision of protected cycle-lanes is one of THE biggest local election issues this year, in the face of the pollution, congestion, diabetes, inactivity and climate crises facing the borough. We cannot tolerate our kids’ lungs being trashed for life with transport pollution any longer. Traffic and pollution in the City of London went DOWN 15% after the opening of the 2 new cycle-highways.

However, Labour in an astonishing positive turnaround from 5 years ago, have given a large number of very good pledges, in response to the campaign group Stop Killing Cyclists’ “8 for 2018 Manifesto Challenge”. They promised to back segregated cycle-lanes on the Old Kent Road and to make Rye Lane traffic free. The Lib Dems also gave very positive cycling promises but fence-sat on the key issue. They back protected cycle-lanes on all main roads but launched a weird attack on the Mayor’s cycleways for being “overengineered”!

The Greens backed all of the “8 for 2018” demands. Over the last 26 years, I have seen repeated warm words from Labour & LibDems at election time, with almost nothing delivered.

Both parties failed to put tackling the climate emergency at the heart of their administrations. If global sea-levels keep rising at current rates, there will be NO Southwark. Labour have done good work on housing insulation, but demolished thousands of good council homes, leading to an enormous embedded carbon-bomb being exploded.

Both parties literally bulldozed thousands of trees and built on local parks. Labour wants to destroy our parks by surrounding them with up to 50 storey tower-blocks.

Nationally Labour and the Tories, unlike LibDems and Greens, back Brexit and so we would lose all the vital EU environmental and worker protections.

My view is that we therefore need as many Green councillors as possible this time.

A less binary society benefits everyone

REGARDING THE article in the Southwark News of April 5th: ‘Unisex? Southwark schools consider gender-neutral uniforms in trans debate.’

I think that the debate has moved on from how it is important to keep the gender difference in so many things.

The report suggests that the women seeking access to the ‘male only

swimming session’ were allowed access. So, no problem there.

And as for the school; I remember TV programmes last year which showed the effect of not treating girls and boys differently. The primary school concerned reported that emotionally, behaviourally, and academically both boys and girls improved. They showed that both groups became less ‘controlled‘ by the expectations and narrow minded attitudes that they were supposed to accept. The changes were so heartening, positive and really so dramatic.

Isn’t the current debate about mean and medium parity in the wages of men and women about a gender neutral attitude to pay? Rather than women suffering because of trans men or women, they will share in the improvement for everyone, regardless of gender.

So much of what happens in our society should not be predicated by treating men and women differently.

What is necessary about dressing children in costumes to highlight their gender differences. It is beginning to seem rather creepy. Remember that it was unacceptable for women to wear trousers and now all do. Change and the move to a less binary society is inevitable and will be beneficial to everyone.

ow living in Sidcup, playwright Michael Head still writes about his Bermondsey roots, writes Michael Holland.

then aged just 19, wasn’t pre-pared for the fame and money that came with Hollyoaks, and the aftermath of this is something he discusses in his autobiography - Too Much Too Young - that he is currently writing.

When Hollyoaks ended Paul could be found on several reality shows, either as a contestant or pre-senter, and eventually agreed to do Celebrity Big Brother. He says it was ‘a risk, but it turned out really good for me…

It showed that I’m a nice guy who can be funny and entertaining, as well as show that I am sensitive too.’

As well as TV jobs Paul has a spot on Talk Radio and his own acting school where he teaches meth-od acting, which he loves doing: ‘I feel

US politics are not something I find in the least bit interesting, so I was all geared up to slip out at the interval and make my way into the night. However, when the time come I couldn't wait to return for the second half of Kevin Armento’s Devil With the Blue Dress.

If an actor can make me sit up and listen, grab my attention and engage me within the play then they are doing a great job and all five on stage did just that.

There is no scenery, no special effects to this play, just five women and a saxophonist quietly tootling in the corner. There is no Bill

like I’m giving back,’ he says. He is a family man these days, and a father, and emphasises that ‘when I’m not on telly that’s the person I am, a dad to my little boy. I’m not the party animal that people might think I am.’

He took this role in Worth A Flutter to get back to the job he was trained to do, to get back on stage and act. He emphasises that he wants people to see he is more than a reality star.

Playing two different characters might stretch someone who has been away from theatre for a while, but Paul declares he is up for it. ‘One character,’ he starts, ‘ is a bit of a charmer, a bit of a jack the lad, and the other one is a father who loses his 9-year-old daughter… The play has

every-thing: it’s funny, it’s sad, and it’s a bit upsetting at times.’

Michael Head adds, ‘I'm delighted that Hope Theatre’s Artistic Director, Matthew Parker, has en-joyed the script and agreed to give it a run… It is a play which is close to my heart as I feel it is the one that really highlights my work as a London-born writer, and uses real life experiences and peo-ple from my growing up in South London.’

An Evening Of Meat has been created and choreographed by March for her all-female collective, I Am, and combines feasting and carousing while scantily clad dancers cavort on the table tops. That all sounds a bit fetish but it is an art performance above all else. The women demand attention and eye contact as they crawl across the long dining tables, between the plates and wine glasses. At times they are in worlds of their own tortured Hell, then in a flash they are moving completely in synch with each other and the music, even though they are in different parts of the room. And all the while Kate March is monitoring,

directing and participating in the romp.

The idea March wants to explore is femininity and vulnerability, and not to make women ‘a piece of meat’, but I’m not sure this is totally achieved. I suppose, though, after the initial awkwardness experienced at a troupe

I ENTERED The Vaults with a feeling of trepidation, but after experiencing Kate March and her cavorting crew of dancers at An Evening Of Meat, I later left there feeling utterly exuberant, writes Michael Holland.

of nubile young women in bustiers and fishnets writhing just inches from you, any thoughts of lust loses its lascivious lure and the food and drink become more important.

And the fare was excellent. The menu of six, sexy meat-based dishes

was prepared by Michelin trained chef Chavdar Todorov and included chicken liver, pig cheek and a very tender mutton shoulder, all perfectly cooked and presented. Even the dessert of 70% chocolate and olive oil ganache had bacon flakes over it.

Ultimately I wasn’t sure what I had actually been part of. Was An Evening Of Meat food porn, performance art or a Burlesque show? I do know, however, that it was both confrontational and a very special evening, and the artistes got a well deserved standing ovation. Comfort zones, however, must be left at the door.

His latest work, Worth A Flutter, is set in a local cafe and the characters and events are based on his time growing up at his nan's in Long Lane, and his time at drama school in the Borough. It also touches on his granddad's death following his kidnapping back in 2004.

The writer tells Weekender how he used to visit the Grange Cafe with his granddad, and how his tragicomedy play, that covers violence, love and loss in the lives of four people, reflects their shared love of betting and boxing(His grandfather ran the Silwood Boxing Club in the 70s).

Head has drawn together a good cast that includes actress and model, Lucy Pinder, Adele Silva (famous for starring as Kelly Windsor in Emmerdale), and Paul Danan, who starred in Hollyoaks, Celebrity Love Island and more recently, Celebrity Big Brother.

Paul spoke to Weekender about his diverse career and forthcoming return to the stage, beginning when, aged 9 and at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, he was asked to be an extra in Eastenders. ‘I would ride a bike round Albert Square and sometimes look after Ethel’s Willy,’ he recalls.

Over time this led to small speaking roles and becoming friends with the other youngsters in the legend-ary soap. He loved doing it so much he begged his mum to let him go to drama school, and after he had passed all his GCSEs he was enrolled at Italia Conti to do a 3 year degree course. This paid off as the young actor was soon offered the part of Sol Patrick in Hollyoaks, where he stayed for 4 years, a role he considers to be his big break. Subsequently, Paul,

Clinton as such; the women take turns to speak his part and their impersonations of him are worth the ticket alone.

The now infamous affair between him and his young power-hungry intern is played out through the eyes of the five women who were in the thick of it: wife Hilary and daughter Chelsea, Betty his secretary, Linda Tripp, a rather scheming Republican to say the least, and Monica, the girl with the stained dress. There is much back-stabbing and betrayal between them and by the end I had my own idea of just who the villains and heroes were in this scandal.

The production is certainly something topical in the wake of the whole #MeToo campaign, not to mention Mr Trump's shenanigans – but Monica is no victim here.

She wormed her way in and naively thought she meant something to the President of the United States. Silly girl.

This is a slick production, in a pretty weird theatre, down in the bowels of an old car park, but if you get the chance it's highly recommended. The dress was not taken to the cleaners - but Monica certainly was.

That Darjeeling feeling

WIND, HAIL, rain, trees and fences blown down, my cap disappearing down the road in a blustery gust; it was definitely time to get inside and get warm with a nice, award-winning Indian, writes Michael Holland.

Hence me and Mum rocking up at The Darjeeling, current holders of the Best Curry Award in Lewisham and Greenwich, and just one of the awards that they seem to win quite frequently.

Tikka seemed like two good starters to share, mainly because I’ve not had a puri for a long time and it is one of the Indian breads that I like, plus, prawn is always good. The chicken was nicely cooked, both firm and tender and retaining its moistness. It looked good too, the red of the marinade contrasting sharply with the white of the meat. I thought of Arsenal as I pushed my fork in and slowly cut a slice out of the chunky chicken. The prawns were cooked North Indian style in a sauce

full of exciting flavours that I know I could never replicate at home.

Mum washed hers down with a small draught Kingfisher while I went for the house red, a robust wine that stood up well to the onslaught of herbs and spices with aplomb.

As we had some time before the main course we chatted with the boss who told us how his chefs are always striving to keep at the top of their game. The exotic aromas wafting from the kitchen told me that their striving

was paying off.

There was a hustle and bustle behind us as the first of several dishes were placed on our hot plate.

With the feast set before us we began.

Lamb Chops Karai was the first - Four chops that really needed to be picked up and gnawed on as they were a bit too fiddly for a knife and fork. They came in an onion-heavy sauce that was great with the rice and nan bread. Then the Fish Bhuna - which was my favourite of the night - was excellent.

The curry sauce did not overwhelm the subtleness of the fish, having just the right amount of spice to enhance and not detract from the dish.

When we had finished we felt full but not uncomfortably so, but enough to decide against a dessert. The journey home was spent savouring the aftertaste of all the good things we had enjoyed, and agreeing that it is no surprise to us that The Darjeeling is renowned - and awarded - for its curries. Long may it reign as one of the best.

Five women condemned to life imprisonment for infanticide

EACH YEAR since 2003 local people have been voting for the people, events and places they have felt worthy of a blue plaque.

New research on Infanticide in Victorian Southwark

NEW RESEARCH tells the tragic history of women accused of killing their new-born children in Victorian London – including a woman from Borough.

Julie Mathias, head of education at London Bridge’s Old Operating Theatre, analysed 662 cases of women accused of murdering new-born babies, or concealing the birth, who were brought to trial at the Old Bailey from 1803 to 1903.

Through piecing together witness statements and court proceedings, her research tells the story of the women accused, often in their own words – like those of Sophia Morgan, aged 33.

After her baby was found in a privy - an outdoor toilet with a drop of several feet - she said: “In an attempt to hide one crime she had committed an even greater.”

From the mid-1800s, it was widely reported that infanticide in London was escalating among poor and unmarried new mothers.

But Ms Mathias’ research has found,

older and married women were also accused – in one case, a woman’s mother and husband helped her to hide her baby’s body.

Increasingly, medical evidence and expert witnesses were deciding factors in recording a verdict, whether analysing traces of violence and mistreatment, starvation, or the devastating consequences of unassisted birth.

Jane Harrington, from Southwark, brought to trial in 1854, was not a typical suspect, explains Ms Mathias: “She was, according to witnesses - a happily married woman and a good loving mother to her two children.

“But following the birth of her third child, a little girl, Jane’s countenance

changes from being described as a ‘kind and humane soul’ to a ‘wild, strange, bewildered person, no longer in her right senses.’”

Jane was accused of killing her threeweek-old daughter with laudanum from a chemist on Lant Street, and was jailed in Union Street before her trial - where her husband paid for her defence.

The jury found her not guilty as a post-mortem could not determine the exact cause of her baby’s death.

As Ms Mathias explains, courts became more lenient throughout the period.

Blame was often attributed to the controversial 1834 Poor Law – which decreed fathers did not have to pay maintenance for illegitimate children.

In 1842, an opponent of the legislation wrote in The Times that the man, “escapes all the consequences, and throws them upon her; and in a moment of distraction the deserted mother is tempted to destroy the offspring out of poverty and shame.”

A year later, a women named Eliza Higgins was found guilty of infanticide, but the jury expressed their opinion she should receive mercy, due to her circumstances.

A few years later a judge said: “The man in such cases entirely escapes, while the poor unfortunate woman endures the pain, the misery, the shame, the exposure, and the risk of punishment.”

No women were executed after 1849 for infanticide, but it was not until 1922 that the offence was changed to manslaughter, rather than murder.

As Ms Mathias says: “These women had lives prior to the dreadful event that befell them – and had to carry on after.

“There are multiple reasons why tragedies like these happen.

“All that we have left of the these women is an official paper trail that historians have so often tried to simplify, but we must consider their lives and misfortunes are as disparate and complex as ours are today.”

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable highway works to be carried out, it made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: Halpin Place, between Tatum Street and Huntsman Street.

The alternative route for affected traffic will be via: Huntsman Street, Tatum Street as applicable.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will be in place between the 23rd April – 4th May 2018.

Too little too late for Hamlet

Hamlet were hoping to bounce back from the weekend’s 1-1 draw against lowly Burgess Hill Town by beating Tonbridge Angels at Tooting on Tuesday evening, but instead they crashed to a 2-1 defeat.

Those results meant Gavin Rose’s side dropped to third in the table, six points off Billericay on top and one point behind Folkestone Invicta with six games to play.

LAST WEEKEND, Tokei Judo Club from Bermondsey were off on the competition trail again when a small team of players set out early to travel to Bristol for the Bristol Open and a weigh-in at 9am.

It was a long journey and an early start but all the more daunting for Svetlana Purisova. It was Svetlana’s first competition after returning to judo following a decade-long break.

As it was a big event spread over two competition areas, the contests stretched out over the day, but Tokei were rewarded for their commitment.

DULWICH HAMLET’S title hopes suffered a major blow in the last week as they picked up just one point from two Bostick League Premier Division fixtures.

Hamlet didn’t take a number of the early chances they created against Angels, and were punished before half-time when the visitors scored twice through Alexander Akrofi in the 42nd minute and Samuel Bantick in added-time.

Kenny Beaney saw an effort four minutes into the second half saved by Tonbridge stopper Jonathan Henly before Akrofi fired over when he could have made it three.

Five minutes later, Rose made an attacking double substitution when he sent on Reise Allassani and Ashly Carew for Beaney and Anthony Acheampong.

The club train on Tuesday evenings from 8pm to 9.45pm and Saturday morning from 10.30am to 12pm.

A spokesman said: “It is a club with a large number of more mature players returning to the sport and new players are always welcome.

“We want to try and encourage a few more people back to the sport as our club has more than its fair share of older (+30) members who often return to the sport when their kids take it up.”

STANSFELD WON for the first time in six games to keep alive their hopes of the finishing in the top half of the SCEFL First Division table.

Despite being on a poor run of form, Stansfeld started the brighter of the two sides, on a hard bumpy pitch. They hit the woodwork twice in the opening five

minutes through Lennie Wise and Harry Gamble.

In the eighth minute Gravesham wanted a penalty. Centre-forward Ross Paget went through on goal, but a last-ditch tackle from Stansfeld captain Joe Bannan cleared the danger and sent Paget to the ground, the referee waving away some strong Gravesham protests.

IT MIGHT be too little too late but Fisher are giving their fans plenty of reasons to be hopeful of a promotion challenge next season after their 4-0 win over Lewisham last weekend.

And Pekun completed the rout in injury-time to give Fisher a third successive win.

ANYONE AT The Den for the first time on Saturday wondering what a connection between the home fans and their players looked – and more importantly, sounded – like, would have gone away in no doubt.

There were several moments, apart from the reaction to the two brilliant goals Jed Wallace and Steve Morison scored, when the three home stands were on their feet cheering and applauding the effort of their side.

At one point in the first half Lee Gregory chased a ball into the right channel, sprinting full pelt just to knock it out for a throw-in instead of seeing it roll out for a goal-kick.

Gregory had the crowd on their feet again before the break when he made a run into the opposite channel before gaining possession and setting up

another attack.

Later in the second period the roof almost lifted off the place as the hosts crashed strongly but fairly into three quick tackles. The decibels went up a few more notches when Tim Cahill came on for Gregory with seven minutes left.

The Den probably hadn’t been as raucous all season, and that’s saying something given how there have been so many special afternoons in south Bermondsey as Millwall drive improbably for the play-offs.

Of course, the two moments of outstanding quality were the goals. Ben Marshall got another assist to his name in the eleventh minute but he would admit this was all about Wallace, who took a touch near the left corner of the penalty area before curling a delicious effort into the far top corner beyond goalkeeper Frank Fielding.

It impressed everyone, not least Wallace’s partner on the right flank, Mahlon Romeo.

“Jed is on flames this season, the quality of his goal last Saturday summed him up,” Romeo said. “I love playing

with Jed, I always feel confident with him in front of me. He’s such a good player and he is still young as well.

“I really enjoy the partnership, though sometimes I look up and see him running around on the other side of the pitch and I think, ‘where’s he gone?!’”

Lions boss Neil Harris said afterwards he allows his attacking players to play with that freedom. Seven minutes into the second half Gregory brilliantly backheeled the ball to Morison, who showed composure to delay as the space opened up in front of him before curling leftfooted into the far corner.

Bristol City, meanwhile, didn’t have a shot on target the whole game.

“They wanted to get the ball, get between the lines and test our shape, and I thought the shape for 90 minutes was outstanding,” Harris said.

“We’re used to not having the ball and having to rely on our shape, but the organisation, the game-management, the communication and the desire in tackling – I’m really proud of my players.

IT WAS Dockers' Day at The Den last Saturday when several of the 2001 Second Division title-winning squad and staff attended the fixture against Bristol City.

Management duo Neil Harris and Dave Livermore caught up with Mark McGhee, Robbie Ryan, Richie Sadlier and others before and after the win against the Robins.

The following year that Millwall squad reached the play-offs before losing to Birmingham City as they missed out on the top flight.

The current Lions are aiming to go one better.

Defender Mahlon : ‘It’s been a mad journey’

LIKE HE times his marauding runs forward from right-back, Mahlon Romeo tends to time his runs in the first team quite well, too.

Up until the 3-1 win over Sheffield United at The Den in December, Romeo had played just three minutes in the league this season.

That was down to the form of Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin, who slipped seamlessly into the side following his arrival from Fleetwood last summer.

Lions boss Neil Harris doesn’t change his side much, and he is certainly never going to rotate, so if players perform they stay in the team.

Unfortunately for McLaughlin, he picked up a suspension after five bookings and Romeo was in, and he couldn’t have taken his chance in more impressive fashion, scoring against the Blades and looking like he was so suited to this level.

Romeo, 22, was never likely to get too down when he wasn’t getting a look-in this season. After all, it was just three years ago this month when he was told by Gillingham that they would be releasing him.

He was only nineteen years old, which for some is a late enough age to mean their dreams of a professional career are over.

But Millwall’s head of academy Scott Fitzgerald had contacts at the Gills and had heard good things about the defender, those raw attributes of power, pace and good finishing ability when he gets within range of goal. It was enough to convince Fitzgerald to give him chance, and he was brought in to train and play for the under-21s, whose previous boss Neil Harris had only recently taken over the first team from Ian Holloway.

It wasn’t exactly last-chance saloon for a player who had also been released by Arsenal, but it can’t have been far away from it.

And he had to quickly put his disappointment after his release by Gillingham out of his mind and make an impression with Millwall as he tried to earn a deal.

“I’m thinking all sorts of negative things at the time when I left Gillingham,” Romeo

said. “That was a really tough time but I was grateful for getting the opportunity here from Scott Fitzgerald, the gaffer, Livers [Dave Livermore], Andy Frampton when he was here.

“They took me in and I really love it here.

“When you’re young and get knockbacks the thought is always in the back of your mind that it might not work out, but I knew I had to keep going. I had my friends and my family encouraging me to keep going.

“I had finished school so essentially I had to make it at football, and if anything that gave me extra drive.

“I was training with Scott because at the time the gaffer had just taken over the first team. I had a few games under Scott and he gave me the chance. I’m grateful to him.

“I wanted to prove what I was good at, prove what I could do. They made it easy for me here, the players, the staff. The gaffer [Harris] was up front with me which is something I really respect and appreciate. He said, ‘you’re a young man coming in, do your best for the underage team and if you’re good enough you’ll get the chance’.

“He’s really fair with the chances he gives you and that’s all you can really ask for.”

Romeo earned a one-year deal, his signing going well under the radar at the time, with most focus on the Lions’ relegation from the Championship and how Harris would rebuild.

Romeo’s performances for the under-23s went under the radar as well most of that season, and when he made an unexpected debut in February 2016 due to injuries to Carlos Edwards and Shaun Cummings, few Lions fans would have seen him play before that League One trip to Walsall. But he gave more than a glimpse of what they could expect, bursting forward regularly from right-back and then scoring a stunning goal after an assist from Jed Wallace.

Everything went smoothly until his first real blow in a Millwall shirt, a red card at former club Gillingham on the last day of the season, the subsequent suspension meaning he missed out on the play-offs and a Wembley appearance.

Romeo came back and worked hard over the summer and won his place back for the first game the following season.

He is thankful that under Harris players are allowed to make mistakes, as long as they try to respond in the right way.

Romeo’s early error against Cardiff in February allowed Junior Hoilett to run through to score, before the young defender composed himself to have a solid game as his side came back to rescue a point.

Harris praised Romeo after the game, and that had a big effect on the player, as did the backing he received from the fans.

“You literally can’t ask for anything more as a player than for a manager to have your back like that, especially when you’re still young-ish,” Romeo said. “For the gaffer to have my back, as well as the staff, the players, all of the fans, that’s exactly what you need.

“Things like that mistake against Cardiff happen in football and it’s up to you to get through it. I’m just glad that I could repay the manager’s faith in me.

“It was easy for me to move on from that.

If you give 100 per cent at this club the fans are always going to have your back, and that’s something I really appreciate as well.

“Working hard is something I’ve always done from a young age because I’m passionate about what I do, I don’t like to do things half-heartedly.

“I had a tough time at Gillingham. The manager at the time had the young boys working really hard so he drilled that into us.

It was quite harsh discipline but I think it helped me.”

Romeo describes this season as a “mad journey” and that is a description that could easily apply to his own career over the last three years.

Millwall will hope to still be pressing for a play-off place by the time their next home fixture comes along, Fulham on Friday night, April 20.

Their home form has been the basis of their surprising top-six push recently, and there is a quiet determination to keep the challenge going all the way until the end of the season.

“We can’t get too ahead of ourselves and if we keep going like we have been going then who knows what might happen,” Romeo said.

“At The Den I feel like we always have an advantage no matter who we are playing.

That helps us. We know what to do against what opposition and we are ready for every challenge.

“It’s been a mad journey. We had to wait so long to get our first away win and then went on a run. To be in this position is great.”

MAYBE THE absurdity at what is happening at Millwall is best summed up by the fact that at the end of this game the combined age of the two strikers on the pitch was 72 as their side moved into the Championship play-off spots.

Perhaps it’s that Bolton Wanderers finished thirteen points ahead of Millwall in League One last season, before a 42-point swing compared to Phil Parkinson’s side less than a year later.

Or it could be that at the end of January when Millwall drew 0-0 at home to Derby they were nineteen points behind the Rams, with whom they moved level on points on Tuesday night.

Try this: Three years ago, almost exactly to the day, Millwall lost 2-0 at home to Watford, and sat on 36 points

– just over half of their current total after the same number of games – as they were slipping out of the Championship.

Or maybe it’s this: In 2018, Millwall have picked up more league points away from home than any side in the Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

However you want to measure Millwall’s late charge for the play-offs, the utter unlikeliness of it is clear.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock has already said Neil Harris should be manager of the year if Millwall make the play-offs but he has arguably done enough to already win it.

Usually there is the temptation to look back for a key turning point, and maybe Norwich on New Year’s Day is an obvious one when Harris was so angry with their second-half capitulation.

Their unbeaten run since then has built in a slow, relentless thrum, like the first low intonations of ‘Millll’ that

began to rise in the away end as we reached the hour-point on Tuesday.

January recruitment has also had a spectacular effect, even if the only spectacular signing was Tim Cahill, whose impact has been felt more in what he has brought spiritually than his actual impact on the pitch.

He doesn’t know what it feels like to lose a game in a Millwall shirt in his second spell at the club. Ben Marshall doesn’t know what it feels like to lose a game with Millwall. Jason Shackell doesn’t know what it feels like to lose a game with Millwall.

That could all change on Saturday, of course, but then people have been expecting this run to end ever since play-offs first started to be mentioned.

And we shouldn’t get carried away.

It’s a real Royal Rumble of a fight for a top-six finish and there are just four points separating seven sides from Derby in fifth to Preston in eleventh.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris is not surprised how well Sheffield United have done this season after their points haul last year in League One.

The Blades ran away with the league title before carrying that momentum forward and in the first half of this campaign it looked like they might have been in with a shout of automatic promotion.

But, perhaps understandably, they couldn’t maintain that form in such a competitive division against sides with more spending power. They are still in the hunt for a top-six finish, and will be looking to avenge their 31 defeat at The Den earlier this season, when a switch by Harris from 4-4-2 to 3-5-2 swung the game the home side’s way.

There are three points between the sides in the table, with Millwall also having a plus-seven better goal difference.

“I’m not surprised with how well they have done,” Harris said. “They Tom Elliott gets in front of ex-Lion Mark Beevers to nod home.

Sheffield United, three points off the Lions. Millwall come up against, at Bramall Lane, a side and a club with something of the same spirit.

If there is a club that can say it deserves to be spoken of in the same breath as Millwall’s achievements this season, it is the Blades.

There was even something very familiar about Chris Wilder’s comments after their 2-1 win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday night.

“The rollercoaster of being involved with this club continues,” Wilder said.

“The next one is going to be a cracking atmosphere, absolutely electric, I should think. I can see it being a bit of a slug-fest: two groups who will be giving it everything and going for the jugular.

“It’s all to play for. There are powerful teams, like Aston Villa and Derby, who are expected to be in there, established teams like Preston, Brentford and Bristol City, and a couple of newcomers – us and

Millwall. It’s the toss of a coin really.

Everyone will be looking at all the other results.”

You could easily imagine those kinds of words coming from Harris’ mouth in recent weeks.

Millwall will certainly face a cauldron of noise on Saturday but they are showing that that should not faze them.

They weren’t fazed at Bolton, who played initially like it was them on a fifteen-game unbeaten league run and going for the top six.

Craig Noone almost bundled the ball over the line before Adam Le Fondre escaped in behind Millwall’s defence and only a brilliant past-ditch tackle from Jake Cooper prevented the striker from getting his shot away.

Noone then cut in from the right and shot, the ball deflecting off Cooper’s boot and just going wide of the post when Jordan Archer would have been beaten had it been a foot the other way.

But before that Millwall had given a glimpse of what threat they would pose. Elliott, starting for Steve Morison, just the second change to the starting XI in eleven games, turned and chipped to set Jed Wallace away.

The winger cleverly squared the ball but Lee Gregory won’t want to see a replay, his touch taking the ball behind him rather than setting him up with just Ben Alnwick to beat.

Most of Millwall’s threat was down the right through the rampant Wallace, who seems to have just as much energy as he did in the first minute of the season.

So maybe Bolton were too complacent when Marshall got the ball on the left in the 34th minute, for they allowed him to turn inside and curl a sweet cross into the box, where Elliott had made a run behind Mark Beevers, before switching direction to come back in from the defender’s blind side and nod deftly past Alnwick.

got 100 points last year in League One and if you can get that in League One you can comfortably get to 50, 60, 70 points in the Championship.

Time and time again we have seen teams do that.

“They play attacking football. There was no way I expected them to be anywhere other than the top half of the league this year. I think Chris [Wilder] has done a brilliant job in the last couple of years and I enjoy watching his teams play.

“They can be open, there are a lot of transitions in their games because they do like to attack. Our aim is to attack also. I think it will certainly be an exciting game at Bramall Lane.

“The game at The Den was fantastic. That was one of the only times this season a team has forced us to change shape. We did it to great success.

“It’s a great position for both clubs to be in, that we’re looking to get into those play-off spots at the end of the season.”

Marshall has made a remarkable impact since his move from Wolves in January. He has scored three goals and his cross for Elliott was his fifth assist.

Elliott, too, played like a man possessed, from the opening minute when he surged through the centre before being fouled, to his chasing down of Alnwick numerous times before he was replaced with Morison late on.

effort had enough left to power his shot high past Alnwick.

The Millwall players celebrated in front of their own fans, who were a distance away from them, high up in the away stand but whose songs and chants and encouragement had reached their players.

Cahill – part of the last Millwall squad to make the play-offs at this level, in 2002 – came on with four minutes left to form that veteran partnership with Morison.

There was only one real scare for Millwall, when Archer almost dropped Sammy Ameobi’s speculative shot over the line. Archer just got there in time at the second attempt and gulped a deep breath.

NEIL HARRIS admits Millwall are on a “rollercoaster” – and insists “the shackles are off” as the Lions go for a top-six Championship finish.

The first of those is against Sheffield United on Saturday, the Blades trailing their play-off rivals by three points.

“It’s a rollercoaster for us at the moment,” Harris admitted. “The shackles are off and I say to them, ‘just go and play’. We’ve not changed anything. We’re going and enjoying it and seeing where it takes us.

“When you’ve got that attitude and the leadership in the dressing room

that we’ve got, the personalities and the coaching set-up – everyone is there to enjoy themselves.

“I said to them before the game, ‘play to the best of your ability but give me everything’. Against Parky’s sides you’ve got to be at it.

“Bolton were excellent first half and we had to try to match that. Normally it’s teams trying to match us but we had to match them and the players did.

I’m really proud of them for that.

“We’ve got four games coming up.

We’ve got Sheffield United away probably in front of 25,000, 27,000 fans at Bramall Lane.

“We play Fulham live on telly in front of a sold-out Den. We play Middlesbrough away, who spent six billion quid in the summer.

“And then we’ve got Aston Villa at The Den and that will be sold out on the last day of the season.

“Whether we stay in the top six or we don’t what a fantastic season my players have had. Great credit to them.

“But what I know is that those players won’t rest on what they have done so far. They want to win games, they want to attack the top six, they want to be in the play-offs, want that opportunity.

“They have earned the right to play four massive games at the end of the season. Saturday will be a great game.

“Pressure on Millwall? No, nothing, absolutely nothing. We felt no pressure [Tuesday night]. My players don’t feel pressure. They are just enjoying it.”

HARRIS: ‘KEEPER FUTURE IS WITH LIONS

NEIL HARRIS says Millwall’s players are not thinking about contracts as they focus on their playoff push.

The Lions are in talks with striker Lee Gregory over a new deal, while Byron Wesbter is out of contract this summer.

Another player, Tom King, has enjoyed a run of first-team football on loan at Stevenage and may decide to leave if he feels his chances at Millwall are limited.

But Harris insisted those talks could

wait until after the end of this campaign.

“Tom has done brilliantly for me,” Harris said. “Kingy is the future, 100 per cent. He’s a top, top goalkeeper. We brought him in on a trial basis to have a look at him a few years ago and I loved what I saw.

“My thought process hasn’t changed, Tom King is here for the long term.

What happens in the short term will be for me and Tom to discuss over the summer.

“Two, three, four goalkeepers, whatever Millwall need next season is the most important thing. What we have

to do is make sure players get what they need, whether that’s involvement with the first team here, on the bench or out on loan again.

“They will be the conversations that will take place in the summer.

“I don’t expect any contracts situations to arise for the rest of the season. It’s right at the back of the players’ minds and away from my thoughts at the moment.

“You always want to keep your best players and improve the squad all the time. Other than that there is no thought about players’ contracts.”
