Meals-on-wheels cut part of grim picture for elderly

ADLY OUR story on 92-yearold Maureen Doran, who had her meals-on-wheels service cut without any notice, is part of an increasingly grim picture for our vulnerable elderly people starved of services in the face of continuing cuts.

Suffering from dementia and living on her own in Peckham without an oven and only a microwave to cook in, her only real lifeline now appears to be her 77year-old sister living a good distance away in Merton.

She does have carers visiting her, but that should not be considered a luxury, as neither should the meals-on-wheels. She wants to continue to live independently and the council has always been committed to this. Indeed independent living saves Southwark Council and other local authorities money, but it is a false economy if having to cut back on services like this puts more pressure on home care budgets and results in more hospital admissions. And without the service it will slow down the discharge from hospital for older people wanting to return to their homes.

What is really worrying about this snapshot into one vulnerable person’s situation in Southwark is the lack of information given to a woman suffering from dementia and her family.

Indeed our own enquiries have left us unclear on who is and is not still entitled to this subsided service.

Meals-on-wheels was an idea that was first put into practice more than 70 years ago during the war and became a part of the post-war social service provision.

However, the service is not protected by law and now fewer than half of all councils are still providing a-meals-on-wheels service after six years of spending cuts.

Councils are being forced to focus only on their statutory responsibilities and Southwark Council has told us that they are not joining other councils by stopping the service altogether, but have to reexamine the criteria to ensure that the service can continue.

Southwark should be commended for not going down a route of just cutting it outright, as a hot meal and the regular contact helps not only combat malnutrition but also serves to identify other illnesses and isolation.

However, they need to be clear on who is affected by these cuts and inform them, with plenty of time for them to make other arrangements or get their family, friends of social worker to argue their case for it to remain.

The most vulnerable are unable to shout loudly and they will go unnoticed unless we all join the council, charities and push our MPs to get the government to provide local authorities with the funding. We must ensure our system does not just give these people the statutory service of making sure they are washed, dressed and fed, but allows them to live dignified and independent lives.

Guy’s hospital surgeons operate on King George VI in Netflix drama The Crown

SURGEONS FROM Guy’s Hospital have appeared in Netflix’s new drama series The Crown, in what is thought to be the first time real life medics performed a TV-show procedure.

The transplant team from Guy’s were asked on the programme, which focuses on Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, for a scene in the first

episode when King George VI needs lung surgery.

In 1951 pioneering surgeon Sir Clement Price Thomas removed a cancerous tumour from the King’s lung during an operation carried out in Buckingham Palace.

The Crown were put in contact with Pankaj Chandak, a specialist registrar in transplant surgery at Guy’s Hospital.

They filmed the scenes in their free time last November, wearing surgical gowns and costumes from

the period.

Professor Nizam Mamode, consultant transplant surgeon, was transformed into Sir Clement, while Francis Calder, consultant transplant surgeon, Sister Kim Wall and Sister Abigail Keen completed the team.

Mr Chandak, who is also an honorary lecturer and research fellow at King’s College London, said: “Being part of The Crown was an experience we will never forget.

Despite having the film crew around us, once we settled in it felt like a

normal day in the operating theatre.

“The prosthetic body was incredibly life like, complete with a beating heart, and there was meticulous attention to detail on set to recreate the surgical world from 1951.

“I asked the production company to donate the ‘body’ we operated on to the Gordon Museum of Pathology at King’s College London as an educational prop.

“I would like to use it for future demonstrations and lectures to show

how far we’ve come with surgery since the time King George VI was operated on.

“At Guy’s Hospital we carry out minimally-invasive techniques through keyhole and robotic surgery, meaning that patients can leave hospital sooner and recover more quickly than they have previously been able to.”

The entire series of The Crown, which stars Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II, is now available on Netflix.

Corporation opposes bridge toll 4 NEWS

THE CITY of London Corporation has ruled out putting tolls on the Southwark bridges that enter the Square Mile, after it was suggested in a report on ways to tackle congestion.

In the report, Steve Presland, Transportation and Public Realm Director, said that it was a “real opportunity to generate income”, if tolls were introduced on Southwark Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge and London Bridge.

Presland’s report said: “Clearly a

strategic issue for London but a real opportunity to generate income to offset escalating highway maintenance costs if the City of London receives all or some of the monies collected.

“At this stage it is understood that tolling could be delivered by extending our camera network and use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition.”

But at the discussion at the Streets and Walkways subcommittee the option of putting tolls on the City’s bridges was “unanimously opposed and will not be investigated further as a way of managing congestion in

London”.

The news will come as a relief to drivers across Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, who have been plagued by heightened congestion since the closure of Tower Bridge for “vital refurbishments” last month until the end of the year.

Since the bridge shut there have been calls for the eastbound bus lane to be opened up on Jamaica Road for other cars, as queues to the Rotherhithe Tunnel increased.

TfL said they would not open the bus lane to other drivers as it would be unlikely to help with the traffic flow.

Southwark, Blackfriars and London bridges were earmarked for traffic charge

WALWORTH: A young man was stabbed on November 1 while walking through the Aylesbury Estate.

Police confirmed they were called to Hopwood Road in Walworth at 1:39pm.

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a man in his twenties with a wound to his arm, and cordoned off the road until later that evening.

The victim was taken to hospital with injuries not thought to be life threatening or life changing.

No arrests have been made, but anyone with information that could help the police should call 101.

70 firefighters battle basement blaze BOROUGH: Ten fire engines and more than 70 firefighters attended a basement blaze on Monday morning, in Sanctuary Street near Borough Tube Station.

The fire was brought under control after two hours, with damage being done to part of a publishing warehouse.

Station Manager Nicola Lown, who was at the scene, said: "Basement fires can be quite hazardous due to the heat and cramped conditions.

Firefighter crews spent about twenty minutes at a time inside the basement tackling the fire, and were then replaced by the next crew.

“Firefighters worked really hard to bring the fire under control quickly, and once the fire was out they ventilated the building and made it safe.”

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Goodbye to The Glad?

BOROUGH’S FAMOUS Gladstone Arms in Lant Street closed for what may be the last time last week, after the pub lease expired.

Affectionately nicknamed The Glad, the pub was one of the few remaining boozers to host live music, and was the subject of a large pub crawl in August aimed at having it saved.

But after a last hurrah on Saturday October 29, with live music and dancing, the pub, which was made an Asset of Community Value, shut its doors.

The pub crawl in August was started by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), local residents and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle. The aim was to encourage people to go into their local pubs, to show support in the wake of multiple closures across the country.

It started off at The China Hall in Rotherhithe, where there are current efforts to have it recognised as an Asset of Community Value.

The 130-year-old Glad previously survived an attempt by its owner last year to have it demolished and turned into a ten-storey block of flats. It is currently unknown what will become of the pub.

Post Office manager jailed for fraudulent Frozen DVDs BERMONDSEY

THE MANAGER of the Post Office in Southwark Park Road has been jailed for 25 months for selling more than 7,000 counterfeit DVDs – including the Disney classic Frozen.

Varinder Singh Saini, 36, was sentenced at the Inner London Crown Court following a prosecution by Southwark Council, after he pleaded guilty.

His wife, Samiti Saini, 33, also pleaded guilty to an offence relating to the possession and supply of fake designer sunglasses on the same eBay account.

The offences took place throughout 2014 and were initially discovered by film industry anti-piracy investigators FACT (the Federation Against Copyright Theft). The crimes were reported to Southwark Council’s trading standard’s team, who led on the investigation.

The court heard that two test purchases were made by trading standard officers, followed by a number of raids of the defendant’s flat and the Post Office where he worked.

Searches of the home revealed a “wellorganized and highly profitable” enterprise was ongoing, with Saini ordering the goods from China and then packaging them up at home for postage

via the Post Office he managed.

Counterfeit Disney hologram stickers were also found, which were being stuck on certain DVDs to make them appear genuine. The business flourished in late 2014, despite a warning letter from HM Border Force advising that they had detained a consignment of DVDs addressed to Mr Saini as it was believed they were infringing goods.

Mr Saini also sought to head off negative feedback on eBay by advising any disgruntled customers to contact him directly rather than use the legitimate mechanisms available.

In sentencing Mr Saini to an immediate custodial sentence, for offences under the Fraud Act 2006 and Trade Marks Act 1994, His Honour Judge Wood QC said it was a “substantial business that was defrauding both customers and trade mark owners”.

Councillor Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Safety, said: “The considerable jail sentence should serve as a stark reminder of just how seriously DVD piracy is taken.

“Mr Saini thought he could make easy money from duping thousands of customers into buying dodgy DVDs whilst at the same time depriving legitimate businesses of their trade.

“I am pleased that thanks to the investigative skills of our trading standards team the business was halted and any profits he made are likely be confiscated.”

Mrs Saini was sentenced to a community order for one offence under the Trade Marks Act and must undertake 50 hours of unpaid work within six months. The council is now pursuing confiscation proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 with a view to recovering the criminal benefit obtained.

Kieron Sharp, Director General of the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), said: “Many people think copyright theft is a victimless crime and that buying a fake DVD or watching a film from a pirate site has no direct consequences.

“However, this could not be any further from the truth. Not only does piracy starve the creative industries and UK economy of millions of pounds a year, but it also impacts the livelihoods of thousands of people who support and work in the industry.”

A 92-YEAR-old widow with dementia, who does not own an oven, has had her meals on wheels stopped after subsidies were cut from Southwark Council.

Maureen Doran, better known as Mary, of Bushey Hill Road in Peckham, was visited out of the blue by a social worker on October 31. She was told that last Friday’s delivery was going be the last she received, her family has said.

The News understands meals on wheels subsidies have been reduced across the borough, as local authorities across England cope with central government funding cuts.

The vulnerable woman’s sister, Esther Owens, called the abrupt end to the services “a disgrace”.

“My sister has no cooker, and she can’t prepare food for herself,” the 77-year-old said. Although Mary is seen twice a day by a private carer, the change will mean Ms Owens will have to drive from her home in Merton every week to bring frozen meals, and cook them for her sister in a microwave.

Ms Owens claims the council made no prior attempt to inform her, or her sister about the change. “They made no appointment to see my sister. We had nothing in writing. We had no idea this was going to happen,” she said.

deliver hot meals to Mary, told the News that meals would now cost £6 each to have delivered privately.

“I’m absolutely disgusted they are doing this to vulnerable people,” Ms Owens said.

“I’m getting elderly myself. There’s no care left for vulnerable people in this country. Why don’t they just kill us all off? If you haven’t got someone to fight your corner then you have had it.”

The News approached Southwark Council for a comment, but a spokesperson was unable to respond before deadline.

However, the council was able to confirm that not all recipients of meals on wheels subsidies will have their services cut, and that these services will continue to be provided by Apetitio to some vulnerable residents.

Mary owned a nearby newsagents with her late husband James Doran called Bon Bon Stores for over twenty years.

Ms Owens added that Mary and James were once well known in the area, and that James would deliver newspapers around the neighbourhood every morning.

The centre has been selected to trial the technology by British Land, the owner of Surrey Quays, as it prepares to gear up for the busy festive period.

By downloading a simple app to a smartphone or tablet, families will be transported to a magical winter wonderland and asked to help friendly snowman, Freezy, and his friends overcome obstacles and find presents hidden around Surrey Quays.

There are five levels to complete and on completion players can enter a prize draw to win weekly prizes such as iPad Minis and a host of this year’s most popular Christmas toys.

Ian Moore, Centre Manager at Surrey Quays said: “We’re really excited to bring this new technology to Surrey Quays. It’s a fun, safe and memorable game that should help families to get into the festive spirit - and enhances and enlivens the experience for visitors.”

Businesses sign up to daily rubbish collection HERNE HILL

NINETEEN BUSINESSES have signed up to a clean streets campaign which will see their rubbish collected daily.

A partnership between the Herne Hill Forum, local businesses and Quantum Waste has led to the launch of the new Waste Collective, to prevent unsightly business waste being left piled in the street.

Harry Niazi, Owner of Olley’s Fish Experience restaurant, Herne Hill,

said it has been “easy and cost effective” to implement.

“I rarely see any of my rubbish in my street now. The collectors come like clockwork after the end of the shift, right to the back of the restaurant so it doesn’t go out on the road,” he said.

“Being a food business we’re really conscious of being sustainable and recycling everything we can.”

Quantum Waste, a south London enterprise, can collect from 40 businesses on each trip and are able to recycle or compost 90 per cent of the rubbish.

Food is composted or transformed into biogas and fertiliser is produced too.

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, said: “It is great to see Herne Hill leading the way on a sustainable approach to commercial waste.”

THE COUNCIL’S redesign of Bellenden Road has been a “nightmare” for residents and for users of an elderly and disabled people’s day centre.

The manager of Elim House Day Centre, Aubyn Graham, said Southwark Council’s scheme to widen pavements between the junctions with Highshore Road and Holly Grove in Peckham would pose a “health and safety risk”.

The pavement-widening works began in October, reducing the space for only one small vehicle to get through, which Aubyn said would cause chaos for the Day Centre’s three buses used to transport vulnerable people five days per day.

Aubyn, a former Peckham councillor, told the News: “I think the council needs to stop the works and review the health and safety issues of this failed scheme.

“Our three mobility buses and the Dial-A-Ride buses we use will have to vie with cyclists on the narrowed oneway street.”

News to say the lack of space would make it “almost impossible” for emergency and refuse vehicles to use the closed off section of Bellenden Road with adequate turning space.

A schedule of the works shows the section of Bellenden Road between Holly Grove and Lyndhurst Way was carried out between July and September – at the same time as the Lyndhurst Way and Highshore Road junction redesign.

Bellenden Road resident Kim, said:

“I’m going to be left with nowhere to park once this is finished. I need my car because I have knee and back problems, and I look after my grandson every day.”

Elizabeth Pierce said she only discovered the plans after seeing a notice on a lamp post. “We had nothing through the doors and it was just lucky I noticed it,” she said.

The News contacted Southwark Council for a comment, but received no response at the time of going to press.

Alfred Salter Primary ‘requires improvement’ states Ofsted report

ROTHERHITHE’S ALFRED Salter Primary School “requires improvement” according to an Ofsted report following an inspection at the beginning of last month.

The inspection found that “turbulence in leadership” has meant that it is not ensured that “teaching is consistently good”.

Although it added that the new headteacher, Elli Prestage, had “established her strong vision for improvement”.

Ms Prestage told the News: “I started in September and in my fourth week they [Ofsted] came in. It was quite early but it was a good thing in a way. I was getting to know the school, the staff, the community and the children and had already identified areas that we needed to work on.

“We had the plan and Ofsted did agree with it but we just hadn’t had enough time to put it into action.”

She added: “They have not surprised us and they were really

positive about my plans which we have now started.

“One of the things we have changed is that we had a few members of staff in positions that did not show their skills.

“Through restructuring the leadership they are now able to go into classes and make a difference.

“The governors are also supportive of the plans since I started. One good thing the report has said is that our strengths are strong enough to see those changes go forward.

“The next inspection will be in the next two years but I’m hoping it will be sooner.”

‘I wouldn’t have expected him to be able to see her at the time’ says police officer

AN INQUEST into the tragic death of popular grandmother Mary O’Leary heard that the lorry driver who hit her was blameless in her death.

The 76-year-old from the traveller community in Brideale Close was killed instantly on September 4 last year, after stepping in front of a skiplorry in Peckham High Street, opposite the junction with Rye Lane.

Police analysis of the collision established that driver Robert Britten could not have avoided hitting Mrs O’Leary as she walked diagonally towards the front of the lorry, as the lights turned green.

Mr Britten told the hearing at Southwark Coroner’s Court last week he had been on the road “since

six o’clock that morning” but had taken a break at 12pm.

Before the collision at about 2pm, Mr Britten said he was in the eastbound lane “four cars back, and in sitting traffic at a red light”.

“The bus lane was inside me, and the bus moved off before I did. I started to move off in second gear.

Then I saw a man waving at me to stop. At this point I had moved two or three metres closer to the lights,” he said.

The assistant coroner, Sarah Ormond-Walshe asked Mr Britten “what he had done in relation to looking in any mirrors before setting off”.

Mr Britten said he specifically remembered looking in all six of his mirrors.

Ms Ormond-Walshe then asked if there were any blind spots. He

replied saying there were “multiple” blind spots depending on the position Mrs O’Leary, a pedestrian, would have been standing in at any given split second.

Choir on song for birthday

BOROUGH MARKET Choir is to celebrate its fifth birthday with a charity performance.

The choir, which has graced stages at Shakespeare’s Globe and Tate Modern, will bring its eclectic ensemble to St George the Martyr on November 12.

The 50-strong collective will donate all proceeds to two local charities, The Dragon Café and Evelina Children’s Hospital Music Therapy Centre.

“We chose these projects because we have a link to them,” said choir member, Sarah Richards.

“We have a music link with the therapy centre and the café is at the church the concert is in,” she said.

The choir is directed by award-winning composer and conductor Esmerelda Conde Ruiz. The 50-strong collective prides itself on the diversity of its members, including a wide range of ages, ten nationalities and an array of professional backgrounds.

“United through music, a bunch of strangers suddenly feel at home in south London,” said Ruiz. “We need more of these projects, especially in times like these.”

“You could have an endless amount of mirrors in a vehicle, but you would need to have someone looking at each of them all of the time,” Pc

McCormack said.

“Only if he had been looking at a particular mirror at one precise time would he have been able to see her. I wouldn’t have expected him to be able to see her at the time.”

It was also mentioned that CCTV of the collision was provided from three nearby businesses, and a witness told police the driver “was not to blame”.

Concluding the hearing, Ms Ormond-Walshe, said: “multiple trauma was the medical cause of death, after coming into collision with a lorry when she crossed Peckham High Street.”

Mrs O’Leary’s family did not attend the hearing on November 2.

She was buried in Camberwell on September 30, following a procession through Peckham High Street.

THE JURY trying a Breaking Bad-obsessed City worker from Borough accused of strangling and dismembering a police officer is considering its verdict.

Stefano Brizzi, 50, who worked as a web developer for Morgan Stanley, killed PC Gordon Semple, 59, after setting up a drug-fuelled S&M session on the gay dating app Grindr.

Brizzi, who lived on the Peabody Estate in Southwark Street, admits he was inspired by his favourite TV show Breaking Bad when he tried to dissolve the officer's body in an acid bath.

The officer, who was on duty when he arranged to meet his killer, was reported missing by his partner on April 2, sparking a massive manhunt.

Police were alerted to a “smell of death” on 7 April coming from his flat, where they found Brizzi dressed only in Y-fronts and sunglasses.

The Italian admitted killing PC Semple to police, telling them Satan had instructed him to “kill, kill, kill”.

He now says he either accidentally strangled the cop while choking him with a dog lead or that PC Semple suffered a heart attack.

His defence barrister Sallie BennettJenkins QC last week insisted Brizzi “was not a monster” and a “human being like you or I”.

She said: “A trial such as this cannot give and does not give anyone any pleasure.

“There's been a tragic loss of a man's life. You are asked to determine the circumstances of his death.

“You have heard it said that Gordon Semple was a good man and no doubt he was.

“You will have to confront the fact that his respectability and his kindness to others did in fact mask another side of Mr Semple's life which did bear the hall marks of promiscuity, sexual fetish in

“You may think that whatever these actions were he has not attempted to run away from them.

“He's a human being like you or I, and your good sense of fairness and your adherence to the oaths of affirmation that you've taken insist that you do not treat him as a monster.

“I'm afraid people's sexuality is their

own business,” she said.

Ms Bennett-Jenkins also warned jurors against being prejudiced by their own religious convictions if they had any.

Brizzi claimed the days after the killing passed in a drugged up haze fuelled by crystal meth and sleeping pills.

Two black bin liners were found to contain mounds of flesh, a human pelvis, a hand and part of a spine.

Some of the officer's remains were found dissolving in a bath of acid, other body parts were found in Brizzi's bin, and in the communal bins of the Peabody Estate.

Traces of PC Semple's DNA were found in the oven, on the chopping board and on a pair of chopsticks, indicating he may have eaten some of the victim as well.

One of PC Semple's severed feet was found by a member of the public in Bermondsey.

Brizzi and PC Semple had been trying to persuade other gay men in the area to join them for a “Chemsex” party, jurors heard. Only one man agreed to join them, but was sent away by Brizzi via intercom who told him: “We're having a situation here.

Someone fell ill but we're taking care of it. So our party is cancelled.”

He's believed to have arrived at the very moment Brizzi was strangling PC Semple.

After the killing, he Brizzi sent a message to the victim saying “next time just one on one” to make it seem like he had left the flat alive and well.

PC Semple, from Greenhithe, Dartford, was reported missing by Gary Meeks on Saturday April 2 after he failed to come home from work.

Brizzi denies murder and the jury of nine men and three women have been told they can consider an alternative count of manslaughter.

He admits obstructing the coroner in his duty by dismembering PC Semple's body in order to dispose of it.

Nunhead family is left shaken as ‘irreplaceable’ engagement ring stolen in daytime burglary NUNHEAD

A NUNHEAD family have told how they have been left shaken after burglars broke into their home in the middle of the day and stole an irreplaceable engagement ring and expensive gadgets.

Without causing damage, the thieves cleverly forced their way into the family of four’s home in Athenlay Road on October 26.

A “vintage, Victorian-style” engagement ring with an inside engraving was taken, which the mum of the family said was “irreplaceable”.

A handmade necklace and charm bracelet were also missing after the burglary, as well as a camera, laptop, and cash.

The mum, who did not want to be named, told the News: “I was out for a walk with my in-laws when it happened just in the afternoon.

“It’s a very weird experience because we kept looking around and

finding other things missing.

“They hit the hot spots of the house where you find valuable items, like the bedroom and bedside drawers.

“But it’s not really the stuff that’s missing, it’s the experience of being burgled. Neither my partner nor I had been burgled before. They know us, and have seen us, but we don’t know who they are.

“We just had this eery feeling, I

was struggling to sleep.”

Police informed the family that the burglars left no finger prints, and had little confidence in finding the crooks, the family said.

She added that local residents have started a Neighbourhood watch group called Nunhead Heights because three other households were targeted in the last two months.

A Met spokesperson said: “Police were called on Tuesday, October 25 shortly after 1:30pm to a report of a burglary at an address at Athenlay Road.

“Officers attended and established that suspects had gained entry to the premises and removed a number of items.

“The burglary is believed to have taken place between 11am and 1pm.

There have been no arrests and no suspect descriptions.”

Man injured in Peckham shooting

PECKHAM: A 39-year-old man was shot in the leg in a street on November 2.

A Met Police spokesperson confirmed they were called at 11.57am to Bath Close, off Asylum Road, where they found the victim suffering a bullet wound to his leg.

His injuries are not life-threatening or life-changing. A police cordon was in place on Asylum Road, closing it near the junction with Queen’s Road, while buses and traffic being diverted.

No arrests have been made and no firearm has been recovered.

Lions fan writes book on beating addiction after loss of his twin BERMONDSEY

‘I just want to make a difference’ says lifelong Millwall supporter

A MILLWALL fan launched a book about beating addiction at the Den this week after he lost his twin brother to alcohol and drugs.

Chris Hill, originally from Dulwich, wrote his book Get Your Life Back: The Road to Freedom from Addiction, using his own experience of battling heroin and cocaine abuse.

The decision to launch the book at the Den was made as he and his latebrother, Rob, have been fans all their lives.

“I’m trying to align myself with the Samaritans and Millwall to share my message through the community and society,” said Chris.

“There’s not much help out there because of lack of funding. It’s taking people like me to come out and speak until something changes.”

Chris’s decision to write his book came with a risk as no one knew he is a former addict which he worried could affect his car repair business.

“I started about one year ago which was when I came out as an exaddict. Ten years ago I knocked my addiction and two years ago I lost Rob, and I just thought ‘I can’t hold this in anymore’.

“No one knew I used to use heroin and cocaine and it took a lot to come out and tell people. I risked everything with my business but it was worth the risk.

“My brother was addicted to alcohol and cocaine. He died after having a reaction to an ecstasy tablet. He was addicted for many years and I supported him as much as I could.

“Over the years I was trying all the methods to get clean. I started to understand how the mind works with the body. It took more than a year, slowly beating one addiction after another to get clean.

“I’m just going to keep going till something changes. All my family is Millwall and my brother was a lifelong fan. I just want to make a difference.

“If this goes well I will start doing this full time. My time is best spent

Remembrance services planned

SOUTHWARK: Remembrance Sunday services will take place throughout the borough, with Southwark’s official service taking place at St Saviour’s War Memorial in Borough High Street.

Guests are asked to arrive at St Saviour’s memorial by 10.30am for a 10.45am start, followed by two minutes’ silence at 11am.

Wreaths will be laid by The Mayor, the Representative Deputy Lieutenant, Southwark’s three MPs, the leader of the council, the leader of the majority opposition party, and the Chief Executive of Southwark Council.

In Bermondsey, the Bishop of Southwark, The Right Rev Christopher Chessun, will lead the service at the West Lane Memorial at the junction with Jamaica Road, commencing at 10.45am and a two-minute silence at 11am. At the Imperial War Museum, a ceremony will take place in the museum’s Atrium, commencing with The Last Post, played at 11am, followed by a two-minute silence. There will then be a recital played on a violin made from trees that grew in the former battlefields on the Western Front.

A Remembrance ceremony will also take place at St Steven’s Church in South Dulwich at 10.15am, with a gathering at the war memorial for a two minutes silence at 11am.

Ceremonies will also take place at the Camberwell Memorial, Upper Norwood Memorial, the Soviet War Memorial in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, and in Kennington Lane.

The money Tesco is donating was raised using the 5p plastic bag charges, which all UK supermarkets are required by law to donate to charitable causes.

To get voting, shoppers needs to drop a blue coin into the dispensaries at any of one of twelve Tesco stores taking part in the Southwark.

InSpire is already guaranteed to win £8,000 for making the shortlist, but second prize will claim £10,000, and the biggest prize will go to the charity with the most votes.

“We work with a big multi-cultural group. The majority of people we work with are deprived young people who we want to keep out of trouble. Some of them are having trouble in school or facing being excluded.

“At the youth centre it’s more about inspiring with art and drama, but we are also having amazing success getting some of troubled children into activities like cooking after school.

Children who might not be getting a proper meal and come to us feeling hungry.”

The charity is also appealing for help to find a new venue for its 2InSpire youth club in Thurlow Street, which is earmarked for demolition as part of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration scheme.

Last week the News reported Southwark Council’s decision to name the park, on the site of Fisher FC’s old ground near Timber Pond Road, the Mayflower, in reference to the boat that set sail to the New World from Rotherhithe.

Local people orginally said that they would like the park named after the muchloved funeral director. Liberal Democrat councillors and local residents have questioned the decision to call it Mayflower Park, saying they would like it to be named after the Bermondsey legend.

Barry’s sons told the News this week that they would be honoured, but said they wanted local people to decide on their name for the park and that it was

up to the community to decided.

A council spokesperson said that they felt naming the park after the Mayflower was ‘apt’.

ROTHERHITHE’S IRISH dancing star, Maisie Ryan, and Nunhead’s Amber-Rose Murphy have qualified for next year’s World Irish Dancing Championships in Dublin.

The News has reported how Maisie came first in the U10 Open Championships in Manchester in October at the Burke Feis, and now she has come 24th at the All Ireland Irish Dance Championship 2016 in Belfast, and Amber-Rose came in the top ten enough to qualify for the world championship.

Maisie, ten, and Amber-Rose, eighteen, of the Deborah Whelan dance school, battled it out against around 1,600 other dancers in front of 7,000 spectators, at the Oireachtas Rince na h-Éireann over a week.

They now have the chance to be recognised as some of the best dancers in the world.

Katie Boyd, Maisie’s mum, said: “It’s amazing that Maisie has qualified. I’m so happy for her. She was shaking as she found out and said “I can’t believe I’ve done it!”

“We’re really looking forward to next year’s world championships.”

THE MAN behind CBeebies hit Rastamouse was at Borough Library last week giving an interactive performance.

Michael de Souza wowed youngsters on October 27 with a range of brainteasers, poems, stories and props, as part of a London-wide library tour for Black History Month.

“I love being here today,” said Trinidadborn de Souza, “I love it when everyone participates.”

to encourage youngsters to engage with literature through the spoken word because “sometimes it’s easier to follow when you tell stories – reading and writing can sometimes be intimidating.”

The BBC animation is based on De Souza’s book series which tells the story, via poetry and rhyme, of a mouse that lives on a council estate. Characters speak in a Jamaican accent, with de Souza’s goal being to help people realise the contribution Caribbean people have made towards British English. The books are illustrated by Genevieve Webster.

De Souza will be launching his new book, ‘Little Bruv, get me Bruv’ next year.

A CAMBERWELL councillor joined around one hundred other Labour Party members in the USA this week to try to help Hilary Clinton’s campaign against Donald Trump in the race to the White House.

Camberwell Green’s Tom Flynn flew to Miami, Florida to lend a helping hand to the Democrat campaign against the Republican efforts in one of the most controversial US elections ever.

Trump stormed to victory on Wednesday morning, winning the most important swing States along the way.

Cllr Flynn said before the result was announced: “The people I have spoken to think it’s going to be a good result tonight. If we [the Democrats] won Florida it would be amazing for Hilary.

“It would be a more convincing win as it’s the biggest swing state and most marginal. We’re trying to make sure people get out and vote. Early voting started two weeks ago and four million people have already decided as people try to avoid the queues.

“The Democrats are quietly confident and hope to do better than people expect.

Alice turns 100!

A BERMONDSEY woman and News reader has celebrated her 100th birthday with a 70-strong tea party and a letter from the Queen.

Alice Deeprose, 100, lived in the area until five years ago, when she moved to Bexley to be closer to her family.

Sara Fortune, her granddaughter, said: “She’s unbelievable. She has no problems and no illnesses!”

Alice has two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The new development will see two new blocks on the east and west side of the square in Peckham High Street.

The proposed development in Odessa Street by Hollybrook Homes will see the Scotch Derrick crane scrapped and recycled as a sculpture by Surrey Docks Farm’s artist Kevin Boys, to sit by the Thames.

The plan has attracted opposition from residents, who started a petition to save the crane in July, which gathered more than 360 signatures.

Originally protected by a “protective covenant” with the Greater London Authority by The London Docklands Development Corporation in 1998, it lost this safeguard in January 2014 under the direction of former London Mayor, Boris Johnson.

Hollybrook Homes said that they explored ways to include the crane in the development over the past eighteen months, but due to it falling into disrepair in recent years it wasn’t deemed viable.

HE LIB Dem/Tory Coalition undertook a massive top-down reorganisation of the NHS which wasted billions of pounds and delivered longer waiting times and even delays to ambulances and for most people seeking to see a GP.

Not happy with this record of failure, the Government now intends to push ahead with dramatic cuts to community pharmacies. This £170 million cut will cause further problems.

Cutting community pharmacy funding could end some intervention services altogether, causing costs to rise further up the NHS chain in hospitals or GP services.

Local pharmacies often go above and beyond their duty in what they offer, including out of hours free prescription deliveries to older or less mobile people, smoking and alcohol cessation services, vaccinations and support, service and advice to people with a whole range of conditions.

I've had over 500 people raise concerns about the Government cut. Many from people who can't travel further if their local pharmacy closes. It is estimated that eighteen pharmacies could close in Southwark, with inevitable pressure on overstretched GPs and hospitals.

I was proud to open the new St George’s Pharmacy. The owner, Atul, is well known locally and has helped people well beyond obligations. Atul says he is worried that inyear cuts could reduce his services to our local area and longer-term threaten the pharmacy altogether. I will keep putting pressure on Ministers to prevent their plans causing greater NHS damage.

Losing pharmacies is not the only current threat to our high streets. The Government is also trying to franchise off the crown Post Offices on Blackfriars Road and Walworth Road. They could end up losing services, with lower paid staff in privatised outlets being subsidised through tax credits or housing benefit to far higher levels. Their future is uncertain and many people have already signed my petition on the issue. Bridge is not just for ‘lycra luvvies’

CAROLE BRADY asks in Southwark News (3 November, 2016) what difference a new pedestrian and cycle bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf would make to this area, suggesting that it would merely please the ‘lycra luvvies’ as she disparagingly calls potential users.

During the course of the Surrey Docks ward by-election and in the weeks and months since, we have spoken to hundreds of people in the Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks area and can say that the vast majority welcome the proposed bridge, which would relieve congestion on the Jubilee line, buses and local roads and provide an alternative to a quite expensive ferry crossing.

Many residents have told us that

they would definitely make use of the bridge to get to and from work, either on foot or cycle, or to access banks, shops, etc.

What it needs now is for the Mayor of London not to waste any more money on the so-called garden bridge and instead invest it here, where a new bridge, for which Sir Simon Hughes and we, as local councillors, have campaigned for several years, is much needed.

With 738 local families homeless let’s do something

AS A Shelter supporter, I was heartbroken to find out about the growing number of homeless families in Southwark.

As a mum, I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to tell your children they have to leave the safety and security of their home.

Upsettingly, this is a problem that’s happening on your doorstep.

In fact, 738 families in Southwark became homeless in the last year alone, which is twice the number who became homeless five years ago.

That’s why on 9th March 2017 I’ll be taking part in Vertical Rush – Shelter’s tower-running challenge at London’s iconic Tower 42. It’s the second time I’ve taken part and I’ll be helping the charity raise a massive £260,000 to help families facing homelessness in the capital.

Shelter’s been tirelessly fighting bad housing and homelessness for fifty years but, despite their successes, there is still a long way to go. So join me and sign up to power up the Tower at shelter.org.uk/verticalrush.

Shocking figues of child poverty

END CHILD Poverty coalition has published new figures providing a new child poverty map of the UK.

The local child poverty estimates are broken down by parliamentary constituency, local authority and ward.

Southwark had the fifth highest at 36.70%, after Hackney at 37.10%, Newham at 37.50%, Westminster 37.70% and Tower Hamlets 43.50%.

In terms of parlimentary constituencies Bermondsey and Old Southwark came highest in the borough with 39.50% and sixth highest in London.

Camberwell and Peckham was second highest in the borough with 38.70% and eigth highest in London. Poplar and Limehouse was the highest in London with 43.70% children living in child poverty, followed by Bethnal Green and Bow at 43.20%, Hackney South and Shoreditch 40.90% , Westminster North with 40.60% and Vauxhall with 39.60% You can find all local details here: http://www.endchildpoverty.org.u k/poverty-in-your-area-2016 These figures highlight the shocking levels of child poverty across our capital and show there are specific challenges in London that we need to respond to.

Growing up in poverty can have a profound impact on a child’s life and right now too many children’s lives are being blighted in this way.

Coming soon: Antibiotics Aawareness Week

EXT WEEK is World Antibiotics Awareness Week (14 to 18 November), which reminds us all how valuable these medicines are and how important it is that we only use them when necessary.

When we get very ill, antibiotics can be life-savers, for example against meningitis, and they can help us fight kidney infections, pneumonia and other serious illnesses. They also help make chemotherapy more effective for cancer patients.

However, if we over-use them, the bugs they treat build up a resistance to them, which means they won’t work for us when we really need them to.

At this time of year, many of us get coughs, colds and tummy bugs, which can make us feel dreadful. Children are particularly susceptible to them when they mix with other youngsters at school or nursery. But antibiotics may not be the answer – because they do not work against viruses, which are the main cause of common winter illnesses. In fact, they can make things worse and have unpleasant side effects such as vomiting, diarrhoea and rashes.

So please, if you or your child falls victim to a winter virus, do not visit your GP expecting a prescription for antibiotics, as these may not be the most suitable treatment. Instead, drink plenty of fluids and rest at home. You can ask a pharmacist for advice on common symptoms like sore throats, high temperature and runny noses.

When deciding whether or not you should see your doctor, it’s worth bearing in mind the average duration of common winter illnesses; you can expect an ear infection to last four days, a sore throat up to seven days, a common cold or flu 10 days, and a cough or bronchitis up to three weeks.

However you should visit a GP if your symptoms last longer than three weeks, you become breathless, have chest pains or an existing chest condition, or if you have any other symptoms that are causing you concern. If you do receive antibiotics, finish the course and never share them with anybody else.

The most effective way to beat bugs is through prevention. Hand washing with soap and water stops the spread of common infections, so make hygiene a priority to keep you well this winter.

oe Di Pietro’s F*cking Men is the culmination of a long line of works based on Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde, which in its 120 years existence has been banned, panned, canned and fanned back into life quite regularly under various guises, writes Michael Holland...

Quite often in fringe theatre the unallocated seats are filled up from the back as people drift in, because hardly anyone wants to be right up the front.

Not tonight, though, for Di Pietro’s version that has turned Schnitzler’s wanton heterosexuals into an all-male spectacle. The audience knew the action was going to be hot: plays don’t get banned for nothing! These paying customers wanted to be up close almost within touching distance - so they could feel the sizzle.

A minimal set comprising of a few boxes under blue light is all we get, but throughout the play these props become a sauna, a hotel room, a front room, a student’s room, a street, a bedroom…

And a minimal cast of three play the escort, the soldier, the student, the playwright, the film star, the college kid, the journalist, the married couple, and the porn star as they address coming out, homophobia, HIV, and keeping the closet door firmly closed in case the media ruin a career, in a succession of linked scenarios depicting how, why and where men meet.

Even in its original form this subject matter created an unholy furore in its time with its challenging and questioning of contemporary mores, and attracted vitriolic criticism and rebuke for those connected with it, but in these enlightened times, plus, of course, necessary changes in the law, we are not so easily shocked or outraged. For today’s theatregoers it is merely an excellent piece of writing and performance.

Silence of the village

SET IN an island fishing community, Matt Grinder’s 'Orca', centres around a marginalised family whose Father longs for acceptance in a society for which exclusion can mean hardship, writes Matt Baker...

His eldest daughter is a black sheep with a dark secret that nobody will accept and, when the same fate is set to be visited upon her younger sister Fan, Maggie must stand up for what is right against a community unwilling to acknowledge darkness in its midst.

Orca is a piece that hits tremendously hard. Grinder's study in how communities will tolerate the most unthinkable deeds to prevent the needs and respectability of the group as a whole being threatened.

History is littered with such examples; abuse in the Catholic Church, the Holocaust, the list could sadly extend ad infinitum. Indeed, in the election campaign currently spitting the last of its bile at our cousins across the pond, a stand out feature has been an entire population's ability to ignore moral failings, in both candidates, in order to prevent what both sides see as communal and national catastrophe.

This theme is eloquently and simply put in 'Orca', in the words of the 'Father', "One girl, against the happiness of the whole village. Can you not see it has to be done?" What impressed most though was that Matt Grinder not only exposes this facet in the moral life of a community, but expertly explores the mechanisms that allow everyday 'good' people to become complicit in evil, by silence and an unwillingness to endure the pain of accepting reality, in its often all too unpalatable form.

Stand out performances from Rona Morison (Maggie), and Carla Langley (Fan) are worthy of mention as they carry the emotional weight of the piece with touching sincerity that never falls over in to maudlin sentiment. A s with much theatre worth seeing, 'Orca' is not an easy play to swallow but one that deserves to be seen.

The working class who ‘went to fight, knowing they might not come back’

THIS SUNDAY our country will again fall silent in timehonoured tradition to pay tribute to our generations of war dead, writes Owen Sheppard...

World wars one and two will deservedly occupy the public consciousness in this time.

But 80 years since its conclusion, now could also be the time to pay respect to those who gave their lives for democracy in the Spanish Civil War. It was July 17, 1936 when José Sanjurjo led a military coup against the elected, leftist government of the Second Spanish Republic.

Months later, General Francisco Franco took leadership of the fascist uprising, with the support of armies from Italy’s fascist leader Benito Mussolini, and weaponry from Nazi Germany.

Though the British and French governments took a laissez-faire approach, there were over 300 Brits who volunteered and set sail, as did volunteers from many other countries.

Eighteen International Brigade volunteers who at some point resided in our borough have been commemorated with a plaque bearing their names in the John Harvard Library, first donated to Southwark Council in 1986.

One of those who made it back was Margaret Powell, who was also present for the 1986 unveiling.

Powell was one of the UK’s first nurses to join a trade union, and was made Dame of the Order of Loyalty of the Spanish Republic for her “faith, self-sacrifice and devotion to our wounded and to our war victims”.

Another name on the plaque was Len Crome, who served in the medical service of the International Brigade and reached the high rank of Officer in Command of medical services of the Fifth Army Corps. He went on to become a GP in Southwark, then a consultant, and later become chair of the International Brigade Association.

Douglas Eggar was captured by the Spanish fascists as a prison of war, and was the oldest recorded Brit to be kept in the Palencia concentration camps.

Despite being tortured and shot during his capture, Franco’s men were unable to break his spirits, which an archived copy of the International Bridge Memorial Trust newsletter put down to “his convictions – political and religious – and because of the solidarity of the prisoners”. Eggar died in April 1992, and was buried at St Luke’s Church in Peckham.

of the Ebro in 1938, but lived until April 2009 while living in Peckham.

Following the war he became chair of the Transport and General Workers Union, and later president of the Nation Pensioners’ Convention.

“In the 1970s the right-wing press thought he was holding the country to ransom,” said Richard Baxell, current chair of the International Brigade Memorial Trust.

The most recent of the plaque’s veterans to pass away was Lou Kenton in 2012, originally from Stepney in east London.

An obituary to Kenton written by the Daily Telegraph depicted his life as an ambulance driver during the war.

He served for two years, retrieving the wounded and distributing supplies to Spanish hospitals, and evacuating children from the Basque region to Britain.

When the war was finally over, Britain agreed to return to the Basque country any refugee children whose parents were still alive.

Kenton was tasked with driving the first bus load to the Spanish border.

“I shall never forget it as long as I live,” he said. “Across the bridge for the first time I saw the fascist police in their three-cornered hats.

“All the children were in tears and

all of them were hanging on to me as we checked each one and handed them over.”

Speaking at the re-unveiling of the plaque on October 25 of this year, historian and author Mr Baxell, told the News: “These were unemployed, working-class people who got up and left their homes, people who had never left the country, and they went to fight knowing they might not come back. In fact one-fifth of them didn’t.”

Boy, what outstanding pizzas THE BEAUTIFUL PIZZA BOY

HERE WE are in Bellenden Road, nestled between budding Peckham and genteel Dulwich, probably south London’s must understatedly interesting neighbourhood, writes Owen Sheppard...

Young and affluent newcomers from outside the capital and the country rub shoulders with deeprooted families. So many people around here seem committed to putting so much into the area, and what we get out is more places like this: The Beautiful Pizza Boy. Only a few months since setting up shop, the Pizza Boy appears welcoming, and individual, but also like it fits right in.

Though admittedly we don’t always do this in our restaurant write-ups here at the News, let’s skip the ambience and scene setting, and go straight for what counts: the outstanding pizzas.

“Okay, but it’s a pizza restaurant, there can’t be much to it,” some of you might be thinking, and ordinarily I would see your point. But sometimes all a restaurant needs to do is pick something reliably liked that we all occasionally crave, and just go to town with it.

Before long our party of four were served generous pies of undulating dough that covered the edges of our plates. The texture of these bases was sturdy enough to maintain a decent amount of topping, but could easily be cut through without getting tennis elbow. Then to sink your teeth into them, you had the consistency of a freshly-cooled baguette. If in some parallel universe Mary and Paul had ever included pizza bases with their plethora of baking challenges, you could bet they’d be rating these.

I opted for a Tradizionale: anchovies, black olives and tomatoes without the cheese. It’s a healthy but heavily flavoursome combo of salty, rich, and citric tanginess with the aftertaste to make you relish taking your time over it.

Elsewhere on our table, two friends went with the Capricciosa, where cured ham balanced with olives, Portbello mushrooms and artichokes.

Our other companion picked the Regina, also with Italian ham, succulent mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella with added anchovies. We each remarked on just how filling the pizzas were – all managing to exactly hit the spot.

This cozy little eatery also

advertises itself as a specialist in cocktails, which gave one the impression this Pizza Boy fancies itself as a great venue for dating. And the vibes were certainly as such, with the lighting consistently dimmed and candle-lit, but with a subtle whitelamp lighting overhead. The view around us was of dramatic bare brick walls, juxtaposed with the pinches of yellows, blues and greens amongst the crockery, table tops and waitresses’ attire. Then by the front of house was the ever-active view of the kitchen, where the striped-topped team of chefs flipped and parachuted newly pounded dough with their hands.

The Pizza Boy also bagged himself some bonus points with a cracking playlist. We heard Al Green, Marvin Gaye, The Brothers Johnson and Womack. Like Craig Charles had mixed a classy compilation of highlights from old-school Tarantino soundtracks.

Meanwhile I’m going to resist suggesting the menu’s only drawback was its choice of mains (strictly pizzas only). It might depend on how you look at it, but I would say that only having one type of main is arguably like telling Manze’s to stock something besides pie and mash. The Pizza Boy is just doing what he says on the tin. And in this day and age,

nearly all of us can look at a restaurant’s menu online before visiting anyway.

The final but vital point to add was the top-class service. Chatty and attentive waitresses, and without any real wait to speak of between orders taken, and our plates arriving.

So thanks for having us Beautiful Pizza Boy, here’s wishing you a belated welcome to the neighbourhood.

FISHER SLIPPED to a 0-2 home defeat against Sevenoaks Town last Saturday.

Byron Walker and Harrison Carnegie scored the goals as Fisher remained stuck to the bottom of the SCEFL Premier Division.

Manager Gary Abbott told Fisher’s official website that his side “didn’t have the composure and quality” to win the game.

He said: “I’m so disappointed that we let a goal in the first nine minutes, but it was a great finish from Byron Walker. If you give a player with his quality time and space, he will punish you.

“Both teams created some good chances in the opening 45 minutes; in the last 10 minutes of the first half, we had three or four very good chances to get ourselves back into the game, but didn’t have the composure and quality to finish it off.”

Due to Corinthian’s continued involvement in the FA Vase, Fisher have a perhaps welcome weekend off this weekend, but will return to action on Tuesday November 15, with a SCEFL Challenge Cup Second Round tie at home to Sheppey United, before welcoming Ashford United in the league next Saturday.

AFTER A 2-0 defeat at Staines Town, Dulwich Hamlet picked up an important point at Needham Market last weekend, drawing 1-1.

Marc Weatherstone and Ibra Sekajja were restored to the starting line-up following the loss and Hamlet started the brighter, almost taking the lead in just the fourth minute.

Nyren Clunis’ run down the line allowed him to chip a cross into the Needham box that evaded the goalkeeper, but unfortunately for the away side, clipped the bar and bounced to safety.

In complete control of the game, Clunis once more and Vas Karagiannis

went close for Dulwich, but they could not find a way past the hosts’ back-line.

Needham’s goalkeeper was in inspired form to keep the scores level going into the half-time break, saving a Dumebi-Dumaka effort.

The second half begun with Dulwich continuing to force the initiative and they finally took the lead in the 62nd minute.

An Ashley Carew corner failed to be cleared and with Weatherstone’s cross falling to Dumebi-Dumaka, the striker slotted home to make it 1-0.

However, the lead was just to last just seven minutes, as Jack Curtis’ shot found its way past Preston Edwards, levelling the scores.

Hamlet kept probing, but could not find a deserved winner, instead having to settle for a point.

LYNN AC Boxing Club had three boxers in the Alliance Novice National Semi-Finals last weekend.

Charlie Wincott, at 71kg, won a split decision against Floyd Njenga from Bromley and Downham.

Wincott started very strong, dropping his opponent in the first round and carried on with relentless pressure in the second

and third rounds to claim victory.

In the heavyweight category, Chris Brown boxed Sam Westwood from Bude ABC. Brown found himself behind on all judge’s cards after two rounds following a slow start, but after being read the riot act, the boxer turned the bout around, winning on a split decision.

In the junior category (under 70kg), Kola Omoniyi fought James Kelly from Dale Youth, losing on a split decision. The finals will be held at Chingford Assembly Hall this Sunday.

DOCKLANDS UNDER-7S had a mixed week on the road, losing their first game 5-1 away to Club Langley, before winning the second game 2-1.

The Under 15’s, meanwhile, booked their place in the next round of the League Cup, courtesy of winning 2-0 at home to Long Lane Tigers.

Alfie Alliston’s powerful free-kick from the half-way line found the top corner to give Docklands the lead, whilst Kyron Williams sealed the win with a curling shot from the edge of the area.

STANSFELD CONTINUED their improved form with a 1-0 win away at Gravesham Borough on Saturday.

From the first whistle, Stansfeld were on top and forced 10 corners in the first-half, with the first coming after only two minutes.

Gravesham were fortunate to not see the game slip from their grasp, as the relentless pressure saw the visitors go close on a number of occasions, with two headers cleared off the line – and another one accidentally cleared by their own player.

Stansfeld thought they had broken the deadlock shortly after, but Burgess’ shot was disallowed for offside.

The pressure continued, with Billy Shinners, Lowes, Sam Ryan and

chances to open the scoring before the break, but some poor finishing meant the scores remained level at half time.

The away side again took a grip of the game at the start of the second half, but chances went begging and the game still remained goalless with just five minutes remaining.

That changed, however, in the 85th minute, as Shinners headed a deep free-kick back across goal for Gamble to power a header past the goalkeeper into the top right-hand corner, giving Stansfeld three hard earned points.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld's new first team crashed out of the Inter Regional Challenge Cup, losing away at Fleetdown United on penalties (4-1) after the teams drew 2-2 at the end of extra-time. Joe Bannan and Ryan Hassan scored the Stansfeld goals, whilst the reserves were knocked out of the Kent Junior 'A' Cup after losing 2-1 at home to Welling Park - Spencer Cook scored the consolation goal.

Next up is a home game with Snodland Town in the SCEFL Division 1 on Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

MINUTES AFTER this game finished Phil Brown was asked what he thought of his side’s performance.

His reaction – questioning what coaching badges the journalist had – was belittling and you couldn’t help feeling he had got what he deserved.

Brown said Southend should have won by three or four goals and there were periods in the second half when it appeared that there was only going to be one outcome.

Southend poured forward for the majority of those 45 minutes, after Ben Thompson had gone off after taking a bang to the head and Steve Morison had

been stretchered off.

Those two injuries were the only blots on an evening when perhaps the attendance reflected some fatigue given this was the fifth meeting of the sides in just over a year. There were just 4,502 fans at The Den and almost a thousand of those were in the away end.

It was the Cold Blow End that was singing Morison’s name in the 43rd minute, but it wasn’t for the reason anyone would have hoped. Morison, Millwall’s top scorer with nine goals this

NEIL HARRIS is pleased Millwall are at home in the second round of the FA Cup after they were paired with Braintree Town on Monday night.

It will be the first competitive meeting between the sides and Harris feels there will be a “spark” to the occasion that was lacking in Millwall’s 1-0 first-round win over Southend.

The majority of Lions fans chose to give that fixture a miss. It was the fifth meeting between Millwall and Southend in a little over a year, but Harris believes the clash with the National League side “tickles the imagination”.

Braintree reached the play-offs last season where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to Grimsby, who went on the seal their promotion to League Two. There are also recent links between the two clubs, with goalkeeper Tom King and former Lions midfielder Jack Powell spending time on loan at Braintree last season.

“I think it’s a good one for both clubs,” Harris said. “I’m pleased we’ve been drawn at home.

“It’s a good draw for Braintree as well, they can test themselves coming to The Den to play us.

“It’s one that tickles the imagination more than Southend.

Most fans had probably seen a lot of them over the last year.

“It’s going to be a tough game,

I’ve seen a lot of them over the last couple of years. There’s going to be a good spark to it. The most important thing is we are at home.”

The most eye-catching draw in the second round is the meeting of League One high-flyers Bolton and Sheffield United.

It seemed only a matter of time before they would open the scoring but Ryan Leonard was left holding his head in disbelief when his shot from 30 yards whistled past Archer’s post.

Millwall had to wait until the 77th minute to test Mark Oxley in Southend’s goal. Fred Onyedinma, realising he was offside, cleverly left a ball over the top of Southend’s defence to Gregory. The striker spotted substitute David Worrall at the back post but, against his former club, he couldn’t beat Oxley who sprung impressively off his line to make the save.

Ten minutes later and it was Worrall who brilliantly flicked the ball infield to Mahlon Romeo. The 21-year-old defender is making these kinds of surges into the box his trademark and his finish was superb, curling the ball with the outside of his right foot into the far corner.

There was still time for Archer to impressively react to keep out MarcAntoine Fortune’s injury-time effort and leave Brown fuming at the manner of his side’s defeat.

MILLWALL’S U18 boss Larry McAvoy said he was still looking for the “perfect performance” despite watching his side defeat Worthing 60 in the first round of the FA Youth Cup at The Den on Monday.

The young Lions were hugely impressive against their part-time opponents, with two goals each from wingers Mason Saunders-Henry and Isaac ‘Tanto’ Olaofe and outstanding long-distance strikes from centreforwards Matthew Day and Robert Strachan sending them comfortably through.

The win set up a fixture with McAvoy’s former club Cambridge United. The Lions reached the third round last season before losing on penalties to Charlton.

The current side looks equipped to better that performance as an exciting side won their fifth agame in a row.

But McAvoy will keep pushing his players.

“We’ll pick the pieces out of it,” he said.

“People watching were probably more pleased, but we see them every day and we pick the bones out of everything. We want a perfect performance.

“We stayed professional and kept passing the ball. There were times when we took an extra touch but that’s natural, you’d see that with the first team if they were 6-0 up, you get slightly complacent.

We didn’t do that as much as we could have, we stayed professional and ruthless for the most part.

“We looked at other games that had taken place over the last week and there

had been some really big upsets. Dunkirk beat Coventry, Maidstone took Charlton to penalties.

“We spoke to the boys about not being complacent. We didn’t want to match them, we wanted to outwork them. This is the boys’ job. All of them have aspirations to be professional footballers.

In their dressing room there might be one or two, the rest of them have accepted that they’re going to play semiprofessional football.”

That demanding attitude is reflected in the lengths the club goes to to ensure nothing is left to chance in the preparation of the side and analysis of performances, including in training. Like the senior players, Millwall’s youth teams wear GPS tracking devices to measure how much distance they cover.

Two of the starting XI on Monday night – left-back Junior Tiensia and centre-

back Robert Strachan, who also plays for England – are still at school.

The rest of the players combine fulltime scholarship deals with one day a week at college, but that doesn’t mean McAvoy and his coaching staff, including former Wimbledon and Tottenham defender Chris Perry, demand anything less than total commitment.

And the numbers are eye-catching.

“We wanted to make sure that physically we hit our numbers,” McAvoy said. “We know in terms of total distance how much they are running every week. So if that drops, we know.

If they hit their numbers then quality takes over.

“We’ve got a full-time sports science department, and we have a new guy working for us who has just come over from Brentford. They wear GPS in every game so they know how much they run.

We know how much high-intensity running they do in every session, we know how fatigued they are. There’s no way boys can get out of working hard.

“Most of our boys are covering ten thousand metres in every game. The central midfielders might do eleven or twelves thousand. Monday night we had a lot of the ball and sometimes numbers aren’t as high when we have a lot of possession.

“We’re very athletic. We’ve got forwards and wide players who can run, central midfielders and full-backs the same. We’ve got centre-halves who are quick for centre-halves.

“We train every day so we knew in the second half that fitness would kick in. We won the second half 4-0 and it could have been more if we’d been more ruthless.

“Getting the first goal was important.

That calmed everybody down.”

McAvoy revealed Olaofe, who ran from his own half to score Millwall’s third goal in the 50th minute, was spotted playing football in a park.

“Tanto had a similar run in the first half and the ref blew up, it was crazy,” McAvoy said. “He did the same run in the second half and kept going and going and going. Tanto can do that, he’s an unbelievable athlete and finished well at the right time.

“He’s still got a lot of technical work to do. We brought him in two years ago after seeing him play in the park. He’s worked relentlessly on his technique.

“All the boys are working really hard to get better. Mason is a right-footed leftwinger, not as quick but a little bit brighter in terms of his decision-making.

So they complement each other well.

“And they’re young, they’re first-year (scholars) so we’ll have them next year.”

NOT QUITE Roy of the Rovers given the Checkatrade Trophy’s lowly status, but Harry Smith’s recent career story isn’t far of being lifted from the comic-book pages.

Afterwards he said it wasn’t sinking in. In April Smith was playing for Folkestone Invicta in the eighth tier of English football. He earned money through his work as a welder and trained once or twice a week.

At 21 the chance of a professional career was probably receding, but given the way former non-league players have made rapid rises to top clubs recently more clubs are looking further down the league pyramid to unearth the next star.

After impressing Millwall he had another injury setback but the club waited for him to recover. It’s only 90 minutes into his senior Lions career but on a freezing night at Kenilworth Road that decision looked a sound one.

Smith must have thought his chance to mark his debut with a goal had gone when substitute Fred Onyedinma, seconds after coming on for Aiden O’Brien in the 60th minute with Millwall chasing the game, shot straight at Craig King instead of squaring to his strike partner who would have had a tapin.

But with nine minutes to go, Luton goalkeeper King could only parry Calum Butcher’s shot, and Smith showed his positional sense and quick reactions as he pounced on the loose ball to finish.

Smith said afterwards he looked for his family in the crowd, and he was looking in their direction again three minutes from time after he had powered home David Worrall’s freekick.

It won’t always be like this, but debuts don’t get much better and Smith has already shown he has the talent to make a real impact this season and beyond. It was also timely given Steve Morison is likely to spend some time out injured.

Such was Smith’s star turn on Tuesday night several other subplots almost went unnoticed.

Onyedinma had come on to immediately turn the momentum Millwall’s way after a Luton side showing eleven changes from their last league game deservedly led through Shaun Hutchinson’s 55thminute own goal.

Before Smith’s defining moments it was Onyedinma’s sky-high confidence that was evident as he initiated attacks from deep and he also stretched a previously comfortable Luton defence. His buoyancy made the true difference and Smith applied the finishing touches.

by Gregg Wylde, the left winger who has had a difficult start to his Millwall career. Seventy minutes had elapsed before he finally attacked the space behind right-back Stephen O’Donnell. With the defender closing on him he picked out Onyedinma in the centre of the penalty area and the nineteen-yearold got there before Jack Senior to bundle home his fourth goal of the season.

Harris hopes that assist will give Wylde the confidence to be more daring.

“You can see he’s still lacking that real confidence to run at people from a bit deeper, which he has the ability to do,” Harris said. “He did a lot of things where he was quite safe with the ball but he showed his quality and what he can produce.

“Me and Gregg have had various chats about how it’s not just with the ball, it’s without the ball and he’s got to get it right in our system.

Harris plans Paris talks

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris will hold talks with winger Paris Cowan-Hall after his loan deal at Wycombe comes to an end on January 1.

Cowan-Hall joined Wycombe before the start of the season and after an injury-hit start he has played nine times and scored two goals, including one in his side’s 2-1 FA Cup win against David Forde’s Portsmouth last weekend.

Twenty-six-year-old CowanHall never nailed down a firstteam place at Millwall, and could leave the club in the next transfer window.

“A lot could happen between now and January,” Harris said.

“Paris wasn’t featuring for us after returning from injury.

“We will hold discussions with him in January.”

Millwall to learn Checkatrade fate

THE DRAW for the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy will take place on Thursday, November 10 at approximately 10.30pm.

Millwall secured a home fixture in round two by beating Luton on Tuesday night.

The competition will remain regionalised in northern and southern sections until the following round of sixteen, when an open draw will decide the pairings.

Ties will go straight to penalties if they are level after 90 minutes.

MILLWALL’S NEW star Harry Smith promised he has his “feet on the floor” after his sensational goal-scoring debut for the club at Luton on Tuesday night.

Smith pounced for a brace in the last ten minutes at Kenilworth Road to give Millwall a 3-1 win as they made it three wins from three to finish top of their southern section Checkatrade Trophy group.

Smith found out the day of the game

with the Lions before he joined Liverpool in 2007 after the Premier League club had flexed their financial muscle.

Wingers Mason Saunders-Henry and Isaac Olaofe caught the eye with a brace apiece in front of the watching Harris this week, while strikers Matthew Day and Noel Leighton fired home two superb finishes from distance.

McAvoy acknowledges the threat of losing young players to bigger clubs is always there, but feels the progress of

he would be making the first senior start of his fledgling professional career, and he has already started to justify Millwall’s decision to pluck him from the eighth tier of English football in the summer.

The 21-year-old centre-forward’s father and brother-in-law were in the crowd, as were a number of his friends.

Asked afterwards if he had been nervous, he said: “If I’m honest I thrive on it. I don’t really feel it a lot. I’m just buzzing.

“You’ve got a crowd, the fans were good, they turned up in their numbers for a Tuesday night.

“It’s different. When you play for the U23s you haven’t got that many people

the likes of Ben Thompson and Fred Onyedinma highlights the clear path to the first team.

“Big clubs can offer more money,” McAvoy said. “We try to treat the boys right and try to make an environment that they don’t want to leave. They can see that they’re getting better and they’ve a first-team manager in place who will give young players a chance.

“This is my thirteenth season in terms of being here coaching, so I’ve gone through a lot of managers, Kenny Jackett back to Colin Lee.

“We’ve never had anyone in place who’s prepared to play young players like the gaffer is at the moment. So they know if they do well enough they’ll get a chance.

“Kenny Jackett was brilliant in terms of getting us into the Championship, he’s a great manager.

“But when we were in the Championship it’s probably a lot harder to put boys in.

“It’s a massive motivation, they can see there’s not a ceiling there. They can see there is genuine progression.

“Neil Harris was at the game with David Livermore and came down to say well done to the boys.

“I’ve been to FA Cup games the last two weeks where the first-team managers weren’t at the game.

“Tony Craig was there, it’s like a big family at the moment. Everybody is looking out for each other.”

Two-goal striker : I can’t wait for more

around. There were a couple of thousand there and you’ve got more experienced players around you. I loved it and can’t wait for more.

“I’ve got to keep my feet on the floor and kick on. Hopefully there are many more moments like that to come.”

With doubts over the fitness of Steve Morison after the knee injury he suffered against Southend, Smith could get a chance to try to open his goal account at The Den this weekend against Bristol City.

Smith said Morison and Tony Craig passed on some words of advice before the game, and he even attempted a trademark Morison strike at one point.

“Him and TC spoke to me before and

told me to enjoy myself,” Smith said.

“Like the gaffer they just give me their experience and it helped massively.

“At one stage I tired an audacious 50yarder that didn’t work out. I think he’s the only one who can pull them off at the moment.”

Nineteen-year-old Irish centre-back Paul Rooney also made an impressive senior debut, and he earned Neil Harris’ praise afterwards.

Harris said: “Roons has come from playing Irish football and he has had to adjust to the pace of full-time training, both him and Harry.

“Roons has got great ability with the ball at his feet, he reads the game really well. I said to him,

playing against Craig MackailSmith, who’s a £3million striker, he has to make good decisions. And he had a good day.”
