The Cowboy Way Caleb Smidt keeps sight of his values while chasing his dreams.

By Abigail Boatwright What does World Champion PRCA roper Caleb Smidt do when he’s not chasing rodeo wins with his partner Pocketful Of Light or “Pockets” in hopes of qualifying for the next Finals? He works cattle on a ranch near his home in Bellville, Texas. The rodeo cowboy is a true cowboy, in or out of the arena.

Caleb won the PRCA All Around/Rookie of the Year in 2013. He won his first NFR championship in 2015.

But 2018 was an incredibly difficult one for Caleb, his wife Brenna Byler Smidt and the Byler family. Caleb’s father, Randy Smidt, died of cancer in January that year. Caleb went on to qualify for the NFR and after a summer of rodeos, went home to get ready for Vegas, while Brenna was preparing to give birth to their second child. On November 4, Brenna’s brother Will married his fiancé, Bailee. In a tragedy that rocked the horse world, the couple died in a helicopter crash the same night, devastating their families.

“You read about stuff like that happening, but it’s not supposed to happen,” Caleb said.

Days later, on November 12, Brenna gave birth to Myla Pearl, the couple’s second child. And only a couple of weeks later, Brenna and Caleb’s family made the trek to Las Vegas to watch Caleb compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

“It was just awesome to have my whole family out there to support me,” Caleb said. “I know I wouldn’t have done near as good if they weren’t there. It was tough for the whole family, but they made it a point to make it out there for me. It meant a lot to me.”

In the first round of the Finals, Caleb tied his calf in 7.6 seconds, winning the round and that elusive gold buckle. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with it.

“I gave the buckle to my father-in-law up on stage that night,” Caleb said. “It was pretty special. Words… there’s nothing anybody can say to make it better in a situation like this, but I thought giving him a buckle in thanks for all he’s done for me, the tough times he’s come in, I felt it was the right thing to do.”

When he’s not rodeoing, Caleb spends his time day working cattle, using some of his younger horses to give Pockets a rest.

“It gives me something to do when I’m home, and I like it,” Caleb said. “I like riding good young horses. I don’t mind the work, and it’s hard to get a typical job with a rodeo schedule. I like being around horses and cattle—that’s all I know, so I really enjoy it.”

Now, Caleb is back on the rodeo trail. He went to winter rodeos by himself, but says in the summer months he’ll either travel with fellow roper John Wall, or load up the family: Brenna, 3-year-old Cru Tatum and little Myla, in their bus and trailer. Caleb says he most FOUR

enjoys the rodeos where he can bring his family along. He’s currently leading the All Around standings and hopeful for the 2019 NFR. I like being at home with my family, and I don’t like leaving without them,” Caleb said. “Whether you’re winning or not, it’s just nice to know that they’re there with you.”

what ropes perform best in extreme temperatures

Why do ropes get raggy? Why do some ropes seem to last longer in different weather situations?

How do I choose a rope that will feel great for the most runs?

The answer to these questions has to do with what the Cactus team refers to as REBOUND and ELASTICITY. A quick analogy is the stretch of a rubber band; after you stretch it, it rebounds to its original shape. The same thing happens with nylon and poly material after each run. Nylon stretches more than poly and both materials react differently in extremely hot or cold temperatures. When you add a core to a rope, the stretch of all rope materials is minimized even more giving a more consistent feel for more runs.

For over a quarter century Cactus built amazing ropes without the benefit of CoreTX™. By having to learn and understand the intimate properties and rebound of every string in each Cactus rope, we are extremely confident in the way our ropes perform across the temperature spectrum; especially in extreme heat and cold.

The temperature gauge below is designed to help ropers choose a rope that will fit them when extreme temperatures and climates could affect rope performance and longevity.

With proper rope maintenance any rope can be used at any temperature.

Cactus prides itself on building ropes that fit not only individual ropers, but also the climates where the roper is competing. Although your favorite Cactus ropes may feel great all year long, which most will, we also want to spread the word that some of our ropes are designed specifically to endure the hottest and coldest days of roping.

Above 85° a 100% nylon rope will perform the best because of the ‘hollowness’ it has and the rope will work with you allowing more stretch in warmer temperatures. Between 75° and 85° all Cactus Ropes will perform well when properly managed. Below 75° 100% nylon ropes will loose weight and body, by using a nylon/poly blend rope you will maintain the weight and balance. With the addition of the CoreTX™ it is the best of both worlds, by taking the stretch out and the rope will not break down as fast due to the added durability with the CoreTX™. A roper can expect up to 50 steers for money because of the added durability.

The Spitfire was designed and engineered with a customized process using technologically advanced fibers. The result provides a combination of loop body and tip feel that has never been available before. The Spitfire gives breakaway ropers the confidence to pull off supersonic catches literally right out of the box. The shell is super smooth so the rope feeds fast and easy, but it slams shut sharp, fast, clean, and tight around the target. Breakaway is a sport where even a hundredth of a second makes the difference in a win. The Spitfire’s vivid color is easily noticed going around the neck and breaking from the horn. The loop stays open, letting the roper be aggressive and deliver out of the very first swing. The weighted tip helps ropers guide the loop to the target. Simply put, the Spitfire was designed for aggressive ropers and lets them feel their rope.

With the Spitfire, you can reach and pull off bell collar shots from further back of the target, which is so necessary with the level of competition competing in the sport today.

With the help of WPRA World Champions, Jackie Crawford and Kelsie Chace, the Spitfire is made to be the go-to reaching rope that snaps fast around the neck. Due to its proprietary construction, the Spitfire can’t be compared to sizing of poly or nylon ropes. It is available in the sizes 50/S Pro and 60/S Pro, both at 28’ long. Our goal with this study is to create awareness about what you cannot see in your horses mouth while they are performing with the bit or bits of your choice. The bits we used in this study can be found in most every ropers tack room. Additionally the horses used are 3 and 5 years old. The 3 yr. old was pictured with bits more commonly used on a younger developing horse. The 5 yr. old was pictured with bits more commonly used with a more developed broke horse. Points of interest are, tongue pressure and soft palate pressure. Feel free to draw your own conclusions from our visual clinical study.

WALT: For over 40 years now, I have taught people how to rope and ride in clinics all over the world and I discovered that people really don’t understand how important it is to adjust the bit to fit the horse for each level of his training. I wanted to educate ropers about the need to properly bit the horse at each stage of his development.

Metalab has a reputation for producing high quality bits that are professionally tested for superior performance. Born to Ride

Madison Outhier is one fast breakaway roper… balancing her laser-focused competitive drive with her high school commitments.

By Abigail Boatwright When the dust settled at the 2019 RFD-TV’s The American, Madison Outhier was the first-ever Breakaway Roping Shootout Round winner. Her 2.29-second run netted her more than $100,000. A determined Fulshear, Texas, high school sophomore, “Madi” takes roping seriously—riding every day while juggling sports and academics. But she’ll tell you she was born for this life.

Madi’s dad is Mike Outhier—professional bronc rider and 4-time NFR competitor. Her mother is Kristy Outhier, one of the top women’s polo players in the world. And her grandparents are Lou and Wanda Waters—founders of LA Waters Quarter Horses in Utopia, Texas. They’re best known for owning the great Colonel Freckles, and Mike and Kristy still run the operation today.

Milburn Outhier, Mike’s father, was many time IPRA World Champion Bareback Rider and Mike’s two sisters won countless accolades in high school and college rodeo in Oklahoma. Kristy says they are truly where Madi gets her love for rodeo. Madi’s younger brother, Ace, rides as well.

Needless to say, horses are in Madi’s blood.

“That poor little child, she was pretty much born on horseback” Kristy said with a laugh. “But she kept loving it, and going with me to polo matches, and going to watch Mike rodeo. And at about seven years old, she started roping: roping the dummy, roping off her pony and all of that. She just always loved rodeo—all the events.”

Madi counts herself blessed with the opportunity she has to learn from her family.

“Both of my parents have just helped me tremendously with the horses: polo, rodeo and just all around riding,” Madi said. “It’s great to have them, and I feel very lucky to have knowledgeable parents in the horse world.”

Madi and Waylon Madison has ridden since she could walk and has competed throughout her childhood.

From riding ponies all over the ranch as a kid, to barrel racing, and now breakaway roping at the national level, Madi has always loved horses. Her competitive spirit comes naturally to her, but she prioritizes her riding practice to achieve her goals. She’s active with the Texas Youth Rodeo Association and the Youth Rodeo Association.

Mike Outhier, Madison’s Dad rode their stallion, Wild Card Dun It, in the Timed Event Challenge in heading and calf roping two consecutive years.

“We’re definitely a competitive family,” Madi said. “It’s always been in my blood. I just love competition. The sweetness you feel when you win is what’s so great about competition to me. It’s really awesome to get to compete against such a wide spectrum of people nowadays. Competing is like a craving for me, so rodeo is perfect for that.”

Madi rides a horse named Allo Gallo Colonel also known as “Rooster.” The 2008 sorrel gelding is a son of the original “Rooster” Gallo Del Cielo, out of LA Waters Quarter Horses mare Colonel C Hermosa, by Colonel Clout.

“My favorite thing about him is how he gives me 110 percent effort every time,” Madi said. “I’ll rope on him just about every single day and he’s perfect every single time.

It’s great to know I have a horse like that.”

Outside of rodeo competition, Madi plays polo, and high school basketball. She also makes straight A’s in AP classes—a workload that’s tough even without extracurriculars.

“She’s just so driven, she’s a real ‘means to the end’ kind of person,” Kristy said. “When she knows she wants to achieve something, she works, really, really hard at that.

She’s had plenty of disappointments in her life, but she seems to move right on and keep going.”

Madi likes riding in Cactus Gear, especially her all-white splint and bell boots and ropes. She also wears Wrangler clothes and Resistol hats. In her (not-so) spare time, she likes working on her jewelry business, Madison Lyn Jewelry. But horses are still the top priority.

“Horses are the most amazing animals I’ve ever been around,” Madi said. “Each one has such a different personality and you can get to know how they’re feeling by their mannerisms. I love getting to devote my time to horses. I’m never bored. Always busy. And I love it.”
