Donor Report 2016-2017

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND DEAN

You continue to be a true testament to the power of the STCL Houston community. South Texas College of Law Houston’s alumni, donors, and friends represent an array of experiences, professions, and resources. However, a singular mission connects us all: to provide a diverse body of students with an opportunity to obtain an exceptional legal education. From the charitable foundation that opens new doors with a generous grant to the alumnus who makes a consistent annual gift, each donor has different motivations and means for giving. They all unite to accomplish exceptional things, a few of which we have outlined in this report. In fiscal year 2016-2017, we opened a new clinic, expanded our bar exam preparation program, and awarded 805 scholarships totaling more than $3 million — none of which we could have done without you. Whether you made a one-time gift to support a community challenge, made a commitment to contribute monthly, or made a significant investment in the cultivation of a new program, we are grateful for your generosity and support. Thank you!

Donald J. Guter President and Dean

STCL HOUSTON DONOR REPORT 2016-2017

During spring 2017, STCL Houston launched Give Day with an ambitious plan to reach 100 donors in 24 hours. Nicholas J. Lanza ’89, Sharon M. Schweitzer ’89, and Brant J. Stogner ’06 pledged to donate an additional $10,000 when the community reached the goal. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends united to surpass the goal by more than 300 percent, securing a bonus matching gift of $2,500 in addition to the original $10,000 pledge. In total, 351 donors contributed more than $90,000 and demonstrated the real power of the law school’s community.

collaboration

At STCL Houston, we recognize that we can do more good when we work together.

In no area is this more evident than in the Randall O. Sorrels Legal Clinics. The clinics serve as the law school’s service arm, providing more than $1 million worth of pro bono legal aid to underserved Houstonians each year. Funding for the 19 clinical practice areas comes from a combination of individual gifts, corporate sponsorships, and public and private grants. In July 2016, the law school earned a grant from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to start a brand-new Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, which provides counsel and representation for indigent and non-native English speaking taxpayers who have “matters in controversy” with the IRS. The grant funds allowed the school to hire a new staff attorney to support the tax clinic, creating a winning situation for STCL Houston students, the IRS, and the Houston community.

YOUR IMPACT

No matter the size, every gift to South Texas College of Law Houston is critical to the institution’s mission. An individual donor’s modest monthly or annual commitment can be as valuable as a large bequest. A recurring gift is a source of reliable income on which the law school can rely to support new and ongoing programs.

commitment

Since his graduation in 1986, Roland Garcia and his wife Karen have made a recurring gift to the school’s annual fund, allowing them to make a major impact over time. The Garcias — and others who make consecutive giving a priority — provide STCL Houston with the flexibility and confidence to address areas of greatest need.

STCL HOUSTON DONOR REPORT 2016-2017

Launched in 2007 to unite South Texas College of Law Houston graduates for a common purpose, the Law Firm Challenge is a friendly competition among local firms, offices, and corporations with three or more alumni. Competing groups aim to achieve 100 percent participation from their colleagues in giving to the law school during a fiscal year. Each year, the challenge grows as alumni put their dollars where their hearts are — supporting the future of their alma mater. During fiscal year 2016-2017, 21 organizations met the challenge, raising more than $239,000 toward scholarships for current and future students.

YOUR IMPACT

For 95 years, STCL Houston continually has grown and adapted to changing demands in order to provide a legal education that is relevant, practical, and leading-edge.

cultivation

Generous donors help faculty, staff, and students take new and innovative programs from concept to reality. In 2017, with the help of a $1.27 million donor pledge, the law school began the foundational work to establish an Indigent Criminal Defense Certification Program to address the gaps in Harris County’s criminal justice system. The first of its kind in Texas, the program has the potential to make a significant impact on the criminal defense system by developing a pipeline of well-trained defense attorneys who will provide effective and client-centered representation for indigent criminal defendants.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

During fiscal year 2016-2017, many dedicated alumni and friends generously contributed to South Texas College of Law Houston. Presented here are graphics that break down, by source and purpose, gifts received by the college in 2016-2017.

“I’m a first-generation law student. After working in social services, I became frustrated with the reactive nature of the work and turned to the proactive side of service — the law. As a recipient of the Hyman L. gift purpose

“While the Sam & Ruth Gross Memorial Scholarship has been a great help for me personally, it also will contribute to serving the community because that is my primary goal. I have made it my mission to work hard and be kind.” – CESAR ESCALANTE ’18

“I have practiced as a real estate professional for 19 years, and decided to pursue my passion for service by attending STCL Houston. As a second career student, my family and I have made some sacrifices so I could pursue a law degree. The Vinson & Elkins Public Interest Scholarship has been a financial blessing and a confirmation that I’m following my purpose.” – MARK SONNIER, ’17
