DONOR REPORT 2015-2016

generosity lights the way

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND DEAN

your giving reaches far The act of giving is meaningful and impactful. It is also deeply

personal. The reasons our supporters give to South Texas College of Law Houston are as diverse as the donors themselves. From the alumna who wants to see other working mothers earn a J.D. to the corporate sponsor that understands the role our students play in their vision for a better future, each donor has a unique motivation for standing behind STCL Houston. However distinct their intentions, our benefactors are united by the desire to make a difference. Your gift to STCL Houston helps us keep tuition costs low and provide scholarships for students who may otherwise be unable to afford a legal education. It also does much more. By supporting South Texas students, you have a resounding influence on the people they serve — the clients they represent in our legal clinics, the at-risk youth they mentor in their

free time, and the families they nurture at home. When you give back to our law school, you are reaching a helping hand out to the Houston community, to nonprofit organizations across the country, and to the next generation. A single gift instantly becomes a shining light to many. In fiscal year 2015-2016, that light gleamed as radiantly as ever. Your generosity allowed us to award 870 scholarships totaling more than $3 million. With your help, we sent talented students to conferences and competitions, where they gained valuable skills and continued an unprecedented championship streak. We hosted relevant and timely continuing education sessions for local attorneys,

helped small-business owners protect their livelihoods, and sought justice and asylum for victims of human trafficking. All of these acts and more, big and small, were made possible by your invaluable contributions. So, on behalf of our faculty, staff, and students — and their clients, neighbors, mentees, parents, children, spouses, and friends — thank you!

Donald J. Guter, President and Dean

SPECIAL THANKS FROM OUR SCHOLARS

“With less financial burden, I have more time and energy to devote to my studies and community involvement. A scholarship is also a vote of confidence, encouraging me to work even harder and exceed expectations.” – JONATHAN M. HERNANDEZ ’17

reaching beyond the classroom “Every little bit goes a long way in helping me inch closer to my degree. The gracious help of donors allows me to focus on being a student full time. Your support motivates me to work my heart out to validate and reward your faith in me.” – JOSHUA BONIN, ’18

“I’m a father and husband in addition to being a law student. My scholarship has helped me reduce the burden of debt on my family and maintain a manageable budget as I prepare to send two of my own children off to college.” – STEVE BOMAN, ’18

“My parents taught me the importance of helping others from a young age. I dedicate considerable time to volunteering in church and community programs, and I plan to open a firm to assist disadvantaged families with taxes and financial planning. Being on the receiving end of another’s generosity encourages me to continue on that path.” – MAURICE LAMB III ’17

YOU

“As a scholarship recipient, I was able to pay tuition while continuing the pro bono work about which I am so passionate. In that way, the gift’s impact went well beyond helping me get my education. It played a valuable role in the lives of the clients I supported at the Harris County District Attorney’s Special Victim’s Bureau, too.” – VICTORIA COLLINS ’17

STCL HOUSTON’S IMMIGRATION CLINIC

granting peace of mind

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

In March 2016, the Houston

Immigration Legal Services

Collaborative (hilsc) awarded

YOU

STCL Houston’s Immigration Clinic a grant that will help the clinic host workshops and provide legal assistance to immigrants seeking administrative relief through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (daca) in collaboration with Catholic Charities and Gulf Coast Leadership Council. This grant also provided funding to support two Continuing Legal Education events hosted by the Immigration Clinic to educate and train local pro bono attorneys on immigration law, common immigration issues, and types of relief, including DACA. Thank you for your support!
