A Note to Our Readers Welcome to spring in the beautiful Pacific Northwest! We love it when the green trees, blue waters, and white mountains start lifting our spirits and inspiring us all over again.

As we excitedly prepare to launch our new Craft Brewing and Distilling program, we’d like to recognize our state’s abundance of ingredients and products that make it possible to have strong “craft” food and beverage industries. We look forward to being part of leading the craft beverage industry in Washington into the future by offering the education needed to strengthen the industry’s workforce.

What is a college to do when an entire community has identified a need—and an opportunity—to build an educational program that will support the growth of one of the most exciting industries in existence?

Do it.

SPSCC has always been dedicated to building workforce education that responds to the needs of the South Sound region. So when the Thurston Economic Development Council, City of Tumwater, and a collection of local craft beverage makers came together with us to identify that education was one of the gaps holding back this local industry from booming, we knew exactly how we could help.

That’s why SPSCC is launching our brand new 2-year Associate in Applied Science degree program in Craft Brewing and Distilling this fall. And industry leaders like Top Rung Brewing Company are helping lead the charge and speak for our local brewers as we build the program.

Top Rung’s co-founder and Business Manager, Casey Sobol, is the head of the college’s advisory committee for the new program. We visited Casey and his business partner Jason Stoltz at their brewery to talk about their success and thoughts on building the workforce needed to support the growing local industry.

“What we really need is community collaboration to grow and bring in the workforce needed,” said Casey. “What we’re missing is the education—the technical and chemistry side of brewing. Then there’s the business plan and investors. You need both to be successful.”

Our program includes general education, core requirements, and electives. Core requirements include chemistry classes, maintenance and manufacturing courses, and significant business curriculum. After finishing their core requirements, students can get cooperative work experience through internships and begin applying their skills in their chosen specialty area: brewing, distilling, or cider making.

C I T Y O F L AC E Y P R E S E N T S C H O P I N W E E K The Lacey - Mińsk Mazowiecki Sister City Association is partnering with SPSCC for the South Sound’s first Chopin Piano Competition for youth ages 12 to 23.

Participants in two age categories will compete by playing four pieces by Frédéric Chopin. One winner from each age group will be selected to play live on stage on March 25 alongside Jacek Nazarczuk. In addition, The Gallery at SPSCC will be showing a selection of drawings by Polish artist Marek Chabrowski, who documented sacred wooden structures in Poland from 1918 to 1945. The opening reception is before the Nazarczuk performance on March 25 beginning at 6 p.m.

Since 2003, the Lacey Sister City Program has provided social, cultural, humanitarian, trade, tourism, and educational enrichment in the Lacey community. Through student exchanges and support of local events like Lacey Days and the Ethnic Celebration, the Lacey Sister City Program is proud to bring this competition to the South Sound.

Q&A with alumna Holly Wood | Associate of Arts, Class of 2002 Why SPSCC? I decided to go to SPSCC after graduating high school in

Olympia because it was the most affordable option for me at a time when I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life. I watched a lot of my friends go off to big universities, and then rack up huge debt as a result. I couldn't afford to do that.

How did SPSCC impact you? SPSCC really sparked my interests during a

challenging time. I started out behind in math and English, but once I got caught up I discovered that I was passionate about learning in the right academic environment.

I earned a Direct Transfer Degree (AA), which allowed me to start at Evergreen as a junior. Then I went on to get my master’s degree at the University of Washington.

I credit SPSCC for fostering my academic interest in lifelong learning.

What do you do now? I currently work for the Washington State Parks &

Recreation Commission's business development department as a Marketing Manager, promoting outdoor recreation for Washington State. I've spent the last 12 years working in various capacities of marketing and public relations for private, non-profit, and public sectors in Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia.

What would you tell a high schooler interested in SPSCC?

Don't underestimate community college. Staying local can help you eliminate distractions, focus on school, and stay within a reasonable budget.

Three SPSCC students were awarded scholarships at the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Banquet. Students Bryan Hooper and Alex Bledsoe were honored by the Thurston Group of Washington State for their academic success, community service, and extra-curricular activities that align with the values of the Thurston Group, each earning a $1,000 scholarship. Student Francisco Tamayo, Jr. was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by Gateway Rotary Club for his service in diversity and inclusivity.
