Going Global The skills you need for the life you want spscc.edu

Winter classes begin Jan. 2, 2019

On the Cover: Going Global – Study Abroad, Transfer to International Universities, and International Students at SPSCC University of Glasgow

Transfer to International Universities What’s the most popular degree at SPSCC? The Associate in Arts Direct Transfer Degree. Students save money and earn a two-year degree before transferring into their junior year at a public college or university in Washington State. Now, what if you could earn a degree that allows you to transfer into your third or final year at an international university? This kind of international transfer is available to SPSCC students! And many of the international universities accept the FAFSA and award federal student loans and VA benefits. SPSCC graduates have a direct connection to bachelor’s degrees at universities in France, New Zealand, Ireland, and England in areas of anthropology, art, biology, business, history, philosophy, and politics. The newest program allows biology students to transfer into their junior year at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. And, coming soon, students studying Humanities and Social Sciences will have the chance to transfer to a university in Australia. Join us as we go global!

SPSCC offers many ways to explore the world while also focusing on your education. In 2017-18, students studied in Barcelona, Spain, Osaka, Japan, and Dunedin, New Zealand. Explore and study abroad in 2019 and beyond! More info at spscc.edu/areas/study-abroad.

International Student Celebration 2018

International Students at SPSCC Each year, we grow our international student population, which helps our college and community diversify and share experiences with people from other cultures. The International Student Association is one of the college’s most active and community-serving student clubs, and anyone in Thurston County can host an international student for short- or long-term homestays. Learn about our students and how you can get involved online. More info at spscc.edu/international/homestay. Steven Drew joins SPSCC Board of Trustees

Why they ride the bus: Getting to campus via InterCity Transit

The SPSCC Board of Trustees was joined by its newest member, Thurston County Assessor Steven J. Drew, on Nov. 2, 2018. He replaces Trustee Alberta Barbara Clarkson after fourteen years as a Trustee. Appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee, Drew brings a passion for the opportunities that community colleges provide their community: “As our society struggles with the ever-higher cost of living and the growing separation of economic classes, my hope and belief is that our community college system will play a central role in strengthening the many paths one might take to economic security.”

Heather DeMunn, associate professor

Growth & Innovation Fund launches small business loans Are you building a business? An aspiring entrepreneur? Accelerate your knowledge, build skills for success, and finance your vision via the SPSCC Foundation and the Center for Business & Innovation. You can apply for a $2,500 to $50,000 small business loan if you've taken any SPSCC class or have participated in non-credit entrepreneurship or financing classes. Learn more at spscc.edu/cbi/growth-innovation-fund.

Associate Dean earns research grant SPSCC congratulates Associate Dean of Transition Studies and Fielding Graduate University PhD student Dawn J. Murphy. Her research study earned a two-year, $200,000 federal research grant through the Corporation for National and Community Service. Murphy and fellow researchers will conduct a “Leading from the Roots” project that examines economic resiliency and vitality options through the lens of sustainable, bottom-up, heritage arts-based economic development, centered on the Arbutus Folk School in Olympia. Murphy hopes the project will serve as a model for measuring and broadening the capacity of folk schools to inspire social change nationwide.

Heather began riding the bus this fall, inspired by the Wheel Options challenge event sponsored by InterCity Transit. She found it surprisingly convenient and it gives her an opportunity to save money and reduce her carbon footprint, and use commute time to review her students' homework. She encourages others to think of taking the bus, even part of the time. “It doesn’t have to be all or nothing,” she says, “and you can still make a difference as a part-time bus commuter.”

Christina Morse, student Christina Morse, first year SPSCC student, began riding the bus in 2017, when her friends invited her to take the bus with them for adventures in nearby cities. After that, she learned to navigate the system on her own: with little time to practice driving because of her and her parents’ busy schedules, she wanted an option that didn’t rely on others. The transit system gives her the freedom and independence to tackle school, shopping, and rehearsals with the Olympia Peace Choir on her own time. She encourages other students to ride the bus, too – at the very least, they won’t have to worry about parking in the morning.
